Solve : lost replacement hard drive. Now want to go to Slave as Master?

Answer»

One year ago REPLACED MASTER with a new Maxtor. Worked fine for one year and a day. Have been using former DRIVE (original) as a back up. Has not been formatted! The Maxtor is defective and doesn't even show on set up. Tried to CHANGE the slave back to master and it starts to boot windows xp, goes through the welcome screed and stops on the Windows XP logo and does nothing. However the drive shows and files and data when used as a slave in another computer. It however shows as drive H. Should I change the drive designation and if so how. Thanks, RoySounds to me like XP is'nt properly installed on the original drive?
I WOULD check bios to see if the settings for the drive are correct.
If all is OK, you might have to re-install XP.
Otherwise buy another H/D and install this as a master. H/D's now are
unbelievably cheap. Copying or backing up files to the slave will not make it bootable...
If XP was never installed on the slave this won't work.
Post alot more details on both drives and how they are setup.

Solve : 4 drive to 2 in a Raid 0 array??

Answer»

Hello, I have 4x 250GB Sata HARD drives set up in a Raid 0 array using my Asus P5NE-SLI Motherboard's raid controller, and Im trying to figure out a way to go from a four drive raid 0 array to a two drive raid 0 array without losing data, and without using an external hard drive over 30GB, because thats all i have...any IDEAS? Quote

any ideas?

alot of blank DVD's, seriously. without having an external harddrive(s) or without being networked to a SERVER or other COMPUTER where you could backup your FILES, your kind of SOL. there is no way you can decrease the amount of disks in a RAID 0 array without losing ALL your data.

Solve : Moving to a new case?

Answer»

Hi, I have a COUPLE of (surely) newbish questions.  I have very little experience with computer hardware because I've bought most of my previous computers built from the manufacturer and didn't make any custom adjustments on them.

In 2005 I bought a Dimension 4700c from Dell.  I think it might be considered a model # DHP.  It includes a PS-5161-7DS2 power supply with a Maxtor 160 GB SATA HD.  But I don't have a video card for the system (it's integrated) and I want to connect my computer to a new TV that I'll be getting so that I can watch shows/movies that I've got on my computer on the new TV.  Is the best way to do this to get a video card with TV-out, or is there a better way?

Anyway, because I couldn't fit a new video card into my small case I bought a new case (an Antec P182).  Should I be able to just PUT my old power supply, motherboard, etc. into the new case? I'm guessing that this answer is yes.  However, I don't have an extra slot on my motherboard I believe for a new videocard.  So I'm guessing I need to BUY a new motherboard.  Will any motherboard be compatible with my power supply? If not, how do I determine which ones are compatible or not?  Is my current 160W power supply big enough to handle powering the stuff I currently have as well as a new video card, or should I look into a larger power supply?

Also, there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to transfer my CDRW drive to my new computer right?  I wasn't sure if any of the components on these small cases were non-transferable.

If it helps the service manual for my old computer is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700c/en/OM/en/N56841LRs.pdf

Thanks for any support you can give me, I appreciate it
dell makes some pretty unique stuff for their cases, 160W is really small PSU. As far as connecting to your tv, look for a card with HDMI out, as that is the best quality, or you could just get a VGA to RGB, or Svideo converter for cheap on eBay. If youre gonna get a new video card, get a new PSU, DEPENDING on how beefy your system is, and if you get a nice  new mobo, id get a 400W.Another option with the TV hookup is a DVI to HDMI. I recently got a new 8800 GT that supports HD, but it doesn't actually have an HDMI hookup on it.

Problem on a friends computer when the computer boots up i get the message on the monitor no signal being recieved.

the graphics are onboard graphics.
thanks for any HELP jhaddTry monitor with another, working computer.Ive tried monitor with my own computer its working fine i think the problem must be with the onboard graphics.

I'd say this could be a motherboard or power supply issue, rather than a video issue.  But, follow Aegis' advice first; that could be the problem.Im unable to enter the bios just get the message no signal being recieved then blank screen.
Thanks again jhaddBorrow video card from a friend. This way, we'll eliminate one possible culprit - on-board video being shot.

Solve : CPU questions?

Answer»

I'm thinking of upgrading my CPU from AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ to a 6400+. Will this work in my ASUS M2N4-SLI motherboard? (I don't see any reason why it shouldn't; it uses the correct SOCKET). Will I need a new CPU heatsink and fan? Will I need to upgrade my PSU?

PC specs:

ASUS M2N4-SLI motherboard
AMD Athlon X2 4200+
3GB RAM
PNY Nvidia Geforce 8800GT
Sound Blaster X-FI XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro
Don't know PSU or wattage (I'm guessing at least 400W because my Geforce 8800GT works)

Thanks in advance
the new CPU should work in your motherboard.

Will I need a new CPU heatsink and fan?

depends if you buy it in the OEM version or the retail version. OEM version does not come with a heatsink and fan whereas the retail version does.

Quote
Will I need to upgrade my PSU?

depends, as you were quite unsure what the ACTUAL wattage of your PSU is. i recommend looking for the wattage rating on your power supply. it will be on the back, where you plug into, or it will be on one of the sides. if the label is on one of the sides, then you will need to remove your PSU so you can read it. Not NECESSARILY, it depends on what side it's on.  He MAY be able see it by just opening the computer case. Quote from: homer on March 29, 2008, 12:34:18 PM

Is there no other way to find out the PSU wattage. I couldn't find a label when I looked inside (I didn't remove the PSU). Quote from: Adam on March 29, 2008, 01:33:36 PM
Will my current CPU fan and heatsink work?

it might work, but i doubt it will cool as effectively as a 6400+ heatsink/fan. i would simply buy the retail version of the CPU and get the stock heatsink with it, unless you plan on overclocking, in which case you should buy a good aftermarket CPU heatsink/fan.

Quote

if you looked on the back and on the visible sides of the PSU while its in the case and did not find a label, then im afraid there is no other way to find the PSU wattage. unless of course this is a pre-made comp and you know the model number of the computer.

Solve : nothing showing up on monitor, newly built PC?

Answer»

specs--- nvidia 8800 gts 640mb, q6600 processor, 4gb memory (g-skill extreme edition), asus p5n32 sli deluxe motherboard, 1000 watt coolmax power supply.

ok so when my dad first built the PC he was using some crap case with an LED screen on the front. We turned it on and the setup screen came up and such but when we pressed the button it told us to press to setup, it wasn't really responding, so my dad was messing around with the buttons on the LED screen and it was changing the time and everything. but my dad pressed one of the buttons (temperature button) and the whole computer shut down. we turned it back on and everything was still working, all the fans and harddrive, and graphics card, processor and motherboard, everything. but nothing is showing up on the monitor. we tried 2 monitors and both are the same. nothing is showing up. so my dad tried our old hard DRIVE, our old video card,  and same result.

so he decided the case is probably short circuited somewhere or something and he went and bought the antec 900 pc case. he went through it SLOWLY building it this time and he started it up, everything working but still absolutely nothing on the monitor.

so...is the motherboard short circuited or something? video card too? everytihng is new except the processor but that was rarely used. my dad built our current PC and it's a gaming one too and works fine. i really need some advice or something because my dad is about to go buy another motherboard and it might not even be that. Are you using on - board video, or a separate graphics card?  i dont know lol....what u mean.

im guessing separate since we bought it off ebay and have to connect it to the motherboard...well now it sounds like on board. i dont konw.My fault:  MANY motherboards have on-board video support, with a video connector that is grouped near the USB and ethernet ports, etc.

Do you know if it's a video card that's installed onto the board?  Usually first or highest in the row of slotlike arrangements closer to the bottom of the (vertical) case?no i dont think it is.Do you get anything at all upon boot up?  Any RAM (memory) displays or the POST (Power On Self Test) display, or just straight to "No signal"? "it" is a video card, RIGHT?  So, that's not onboard video.  Onboard means it's part of the motherboard, it's on board the motherboard, it's integrated into the motherboard.  ok its a separate video card. Quote from: Aegis on March 29, 2008, 01:17:50 PM

yah on my lcd screen, the light stays yellow and never turns green (only the one time we had it on) and on the other monitor (regular old CRT monitor) nothing shows up.

nothing at all shows up.so does anyone know what the problem is? is it the mobo?

Solve : New PC Build. Display not working.?

Answer»

Can anyone help me. I put together a new system. The configuration is a Amd x2 6000+ cpu on an Asus M2A-VM motherboard. I have 4gb of Corsair XMS ddr2 MEMORY. 500gb maxtor hd. 2 LG 20x dvd-rw drives. 512mb GEFORCE 8600GT video card. All powered by an utra v series 500w power supply. I Have built a few systems before and they have all worked properly. I put this one together, and tried to power it up, but I cannot get anything on my display. The standby light on the motherboard is on, the fans are all running, the hard drive led is lit, and the dvd drives are lit. Anyone have any suggestions on what to do to get the diplay to work. By the way. I am currently using the monitor with another system while I am posting this topic. The monitor works fine. It is a HP f1903, 19in LCD.you might want to test your video card on your other system. make sure its not defective.I have removed the Video card. I am now relying on the ONBOARD intergrated graphics.did you remember to disable the onboard graphics when you had the card installed? Can you disable onboard graphics without entering into the bios? No, its not as bad as most people think its not like if you look around that something will change an cause it not to boot. Most new video cards will disable on-board video, so I don't think this is the issue, but as Homer said:

really? i never new that.Hmmm....I installed a couple, and never bothered to disable on-board video.im curious to know if that has an effect on system performance. What exactly?leaving the onboard video enabled while using an independent GPU. unless, of course, the GPU disables the onboard video.I believe, leaving on-board enabled, and installing real video card is asking for some conflict, but as I said new cards should be able to disable on-board.mine disabled automatically  Thanks to all. I finally realized what I was doing that was WRONG. I have an ATX power supply and I failed to plug in the second power cord to the ATX slot on the motherboard. once I did that, everything worked fine.

Solve : Mother Board Problem (Not completing POST)?

Answer»

Hello, I have a serious problem, my motherboard isn't WORKING. It still turns on, the FANS run, hard drives starts, but nothing appears on the screen. I'm posting this message from the same computer, but with a different motherboard (A really old one), I know the motherboard cant be fried, or it wouldn't start up at all, I'm not really the Mr.Know it all when it comes to computer hardware, but i do know the basics (If you call CHANGING motherboards basic), I think the problem all together here is, it wont POST. Please help!

*Note*
I don't see the motherboard manufacturer on the board, it came with my computer, my computer is a Emachines. I will be glad to give any more information if needed, but i think this is enough.1.  Computer Specs.
     o  Desktop or Laptop?
     o  eMachines Model Number?
o  What processor are you putting in that motherboard?
o  What type of memory are you using?  How much and how many modules?
o  Video card size (memory), make, and model; if not onboard video.
o  Approximate age of the computer

2.  Is it the "original" motherboard for that eMachine model number?  Did the "motherboard" ever work in that computer?  Did it stop working before or after you took it out of the machine?

3.  Beep code(s):
o  Do you recieve an audio beep code when you attempt to boot the troublesome motherboard?
o  If yes, is it a single "short" beep?  Or a different beep sequence?

4.  Display.  Absolutely no display at all?  What is the sequence and final status of the display power LED.  (green or amber color, steady or blinking).

5.  Startup Light Sequence.
o  Power LED front of case goes on and stays on?
o  Keyboard LEDs flash (Num Lock, Caps Lock, Scroll Lock)?
     o  CD/DVD Drive LED flashes
     o  Floppy Drive LED flashes
o  Hard Drive activity LED flashes
    Quote

I know the motherboard cant be fried, or it wouldn't start up at all

Does not follow.

An ESD board can certainertainly run an not start up anything in the HD even thught its running.  Yes the board is important to get it to post.  What all is really needed to get or replace the board is what model it is.  I hope that XP isnt installed on this drive for it looks for the hardware changes.  My approach to this problem would be to get all available "motherboard" documentation and/or eMachine documentation off the internet for the machine in question.  Then I would try to verify the components and CMOS setup values are appropriate for the motherboard (Yeah, I know... how can you check CMOS values without a display?  I think if push comes to shove you can reset them to factory defaults).

Another useful approach is to strip the motherboard down to its essential components and try to start the machine.

    o  Power Supply
    o  Motherboard
o  CPU (must be compatible with motherboard - clock/bus speeds?)
    o  Memory (one module only)
    o  Video Card

Many machines give a single short "beep" upon a successful POST.  For any other beep pattern you should try to determine what the beep error codes are for that machine/motherboard combination.

Some people test the motherboard outside of the case.  I've never done that so I'm not sure what precautions you need to take, but it would be easier to work on and you wouldn't have to worry about shorting the motherboard to the case (unless it's a metal workbench!).

You could also test without one of the required components (CPU, memory, video card) to see if you can force the correct beep code for that error condition.  Hmmm...  I GUESS this would require connection to the system speaker (which might be on the case?).

Computer BIOS information
Computer never stops beeping or has solid beep

I took the original mother board out because it wasn't working, although (Should have put all this in the 1st post, sorry, I'm new) it didn't just stop working all together, it started just not wanting to boot up, had to turn it off, then off, then on. then it got worse over time, until the point to it wouldn't start at all (I did get it on once about a week ago, but it booted in the BIOS, so i had to "Sigh" restart it).

3.
No beeps, (Even after i striped it of everything BUT the power, i even took out the processor)

The LED of the power display dose blink, but shouldn't that mean its not getting any signal, yet it doesn't say "No Signal"...

What does the speed of the hard drive affect in regard to performance?

your computer will be able to read (from the harddrive) and WRITE (to the harddrive) faster. from what i have read, it should read/write fairly close to 50% faster, but dont quote me on that figure.

unless you are doing alot of reading and writing then the added cost is not worth it. personally i use my comp for gaming, a faster harddrive will only make the game load faster, not play smoother. Quote

Solve : PC Freezing...?

Answer»

Hello. Lately my PC has been freezing. It's been doing this off and on for about 2 weeks now. It typicaly does this when my internet is up. It's always the same scenario... screen freezes, won't respond to keyboard or mouse or even soft-booting via Ctrl-Alt-Del. I've always had to hard boot. I haven't been able to determine what exactly is CAUSING this issue. I've ran virus and spyware sweeps and nothing has turned up. I'm starting to suspect that it might have something to do with a wirless adapter I installed about a month ago. It's a Hawking HWUG1 Wireless USB Adapter. It's had nothing but rave reviews. However I've had problems with it from day 1. First of all, during installation Windows would not recognize the driver. So I called Hawking's tech support, which told me that was the latest driver and it has been tested to 100% functionality with my OS. (My specs are: OS - XPHomeSP2, Process - AthlonXP, Ram - 1GB) They then instructed me to ignore the prompt and install the driver anyway. So I did. And it works. However, upon attempting to remove the adapter from my USB PORT via Safely Remove Hardware, (As I normaly do, when I'm getting READY to shut off my PC) it occasionaly hangs when you click to stop the device before removing it. Sometimes I have been able to close out the window,  and cancel. On other occasions I have had to hard boot. But now my PC is starting to completely freeze up. If anyone can help with this matter I would GREATLY appreciate any assistance or advice. I only have 2 days left before I cannot RETURN this to where I purchased it. What happens, if you connect your computer straight to the modem?

Solve : Can viruses cause memory to go bad???

Answer»

I worked on a PC that had no anti virus, FIREWALL or spyware/ad ware remover when i scanned the drive it had a minimum of 500 viruses , mostly Trojan horses. when i scanned the HARD drive and put it back in the machine the memory stoped working.

Someone bought the parts and built the PC. Here are some of the specifications

windows XP professional(not SURE if it was service pack 2 or 1. I am not even sure if it had any service packs installed)

Biostar M6VLR mainboard check out the link: http://www.boisterous.com/subtotals.asp?model=M6VLR

20 gig hard drive

ONE 256 MB memory card

one optical drive, LG  CD R, RW/ DVD ROM

What i want to know is this can viruses cause memory to go bad? If the answer is yes, how can you prevent this from happening? Are you talking about the RAM or the hard drive here?
Actually in either case the answer is no, viruses cannot damage hardware.
But a virus might corrupt the file system on a hard drive so it needs to be wiped before it will function again. What external forces will cause memory to go bad and leave all other parts of the computer in working order.RAM goes bad all the time.
It can be caused by a low quality PSU, a POWER spike or static electricity for example and sometimes RAM just go bad for no apparent reason.
It is one of the most delicate computer components.

DDR2 vs DDR3 - latency vs bandwidth.  DDR3 is the upgrade.  Googled for DDR2 VS DDR3 and this popped up.

Good READING...

You also should check if your MBoard supports DDR3 or you may just be wasting extra money.
I believe the front side bus speed should be 800 or even 1066 to see a difference...Now if I were using an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 and the FSB is 1066MHz then using any memory higher than 1066 would be a waste, correct? Using any RAM that is higher than 1066MHz such as 1333MHz would not be utilized to its fullest? So it would be logical to use a higher end DDR2 1066MHZ with low latency than going for DDR3?

I am new to purchasing high end memory so does anyone have SUGGESTIONS for fast memory (2GB to 4GB)? What makers do you prefer and which perform best? I've been looking at Newegg.com so am probably purchasing from there.

Thanks for the read Hedonist.personally, i would not get DDR3 yet, the latencies need to come down a BIT, along with that huge price tag.

i would go for DDR2800 or DDR21066. the cheaper way to go is the 800 because there is QUITE a difference in price between 800 and 1066. the 1066, however, will give you a bit more headroom if you wish to overclock.

ive always been a fan of OCZ RAM. apparently their RAM overclocks fairly well.

Solve : PCU overheating after build!! help??

Answer»

OK so I just made my new gaming computer and I turned it on for the first time ...went into bios options and when I got to the 'PC Health' section' I noticed that the CPU had overheated to 96*c!!!! I had only had it on for roughly 5 minutes with all the fans working(front 12cm, rear 8cm, CPU fan, PSU fan) . So I quickly turned it off and opened it up to see if it was just a fault or not. inside was cool but as I lifted off the cpu fan the CPU was pretty hot and had melted the gell from the cpu fan. (Stock fan with no arctic silver or equivilent on CPU)

have any ideas on what has caused this to overheat so fast and dramatically? I need help

regards
RobI had the same problem.  How many fans are in the case?  How big is your heatsink or Model? Quote

This is probably what did it.

I THINK that Patios probably right since I had class an didnt read your whole post.  Also a larger heatsink will help this if the paste wont.  Todays cpu's are designed to shut themselves off when they get to hot so I think you will be ok.

There is only one thing that can make a pc heat this much this quickly and that is no thermal paste contact. That is assuming your numbers are right. After installing the new thermal paste, start the computer and go directly into the bios and watch the temp. If it is already at 96c I might SUSPECT a bad sensor.ok sorry I havn't replied but it took me all of yesterday getting all my files from my old computer and setting up games , INTERNET etc.
I can't believe i missed this but 2 pegs were loose on one side of the cpu fan which meant that it wasnt in contact with it. I clipped it in and im now running 30-35 degreese idle!

Solve : case fan power?

Greetings this is my frist TIME in the forum. :-)

Is there a connector that converts a fan plug to a power supply plug? my mother board only has two, one less than I need.

THANK you for your help. Hi, and welcome to the forum.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking.  Can you CLARIFY?  Do you need to connect another fan or another of some other DEVICE?  i think that he wants to know of there is another way to get power to another fan. yes there is you just need an adapter. Well, that would be my guess, too, but his wording stated the opposite:

If you're correct, he'd want to convert a standard PC power supply 4-pin connector to a fan plug, not "converts a fan plug to a power supply plug".

Here's one adapter:  Link Depot POW-ADT-3P4 Power 4 pin adapter to 3 pin fan adapter - RetailWell, I'm very sorry for the confusion in my wording. You guys GOT the right of it. I needed another place with which to plug in a fan.

Thank you, I will check out the link provided.

Solve : Is a 22" monitor worth it?

Answer»

Hi

I was wondering if buying a 22" montior for my laptop would be worth the MONEY. I tend to game alot but i do other things aswell.

Any advice would be appreciated.I'd make sure the laptop's video chip supports the native resolution of the monitor first...I'm not sure. The MONITORS native resolution is 1680 X 1050 and I have a Nividia GeForce Go 7600 Video card. But I don't know what resolution the card supports.Do you want to use the second monitor for the gaming display?  yes mostly but for some work use.Well, I'm not a gamer, so I can't really advise you on this.  My guess would be a smaller monitor might a better choice.  Since games are graphics-intensive applications, don't larger monitors PUT heavier workload on the graphics card, assuming you're USING a higher resolution than you would be on a smaller monitor?

But, again, I'm just rambling here.  I know we have plenty of gamers in the forum.  So, let's see whether someone will chime in on this discussion.

Solve : headphones and speakers?

Answer»

i have some headphones and some speakers which both go into the same socket into my computer.

there are two SOCKETS but sound only comes from the devices when i plug the device into one of the sockets the other socket doesn't give out any sound when a device is plugged into it.

so instead of having to switch leads over when i want to use headphones or speakers is it possible form me to use both sockets and then pick where i want the sound top COME from.

thanks for any help You can only use a sound output to output audio so I WOULD say no.
But you can buy one of these and plug it into your sound output.

It WORKS fine for head phones and powered speakers.
Ask your local electronics store for an audio splitter, they should have them.

Solve : SONY BURNER ISSUES?

Answer»

Ok .. my old burner died away so I had to replace it. First I bought  LITE-ON, and had nothing but problems. Returned it and bought a SONY DRU-840A DVD/CD Burner.

Now I have different issues. LOL. It came with Nero 7 Essentials software, but I didn't install Nero. Actually, it wouldn't install - kept putting the disc in -- and nothing happened.  Soooo, stuck with what always worked for me in the past - MusicMatchJukeBox. Not the Yahoo/Real version .. the older one.

Anyway, this burner is great as FAR as running silent. It is fast too. BUT .. it doesn't seem to want to burn every time. Sometimes the last few songs are lopped off halfway through. Sometimes every third song is garbled. Sometimes everything burns just fine.

I have tried diff media - always name brand .. same results. I have tried different software from Nero to GEAR to Roxio - same results.

Anyone have a guess as to what's WRONG ?

Yes, I finalize the cd.

I have been burning cd's for years with no problems at all until now.

Replace the IDE cable.
There MAY have been nothing wrong with the other drive if the cable is bad.
The fact that you have tried different burning apps says this is probably a hardware issue.
The only other thing it could be is the IDE channel on the board has gone bad....let's hope it's not that.

One other thing you can check is in Device Manager find the Secondary IDE channel...right clik it and select Properties...under advanced make sure it is not in PIO MODE. It should be DMA or UDMA if available.
As always when making changes in Device Manager save the changes and re-boot.

But you do have to. The old Epson is busted. You cannot fix it. It has gone to heaven. Let it go.
Never I know some Alchemy and can bring its soul back threw the GATE.  For real.  Mite just have to try a new one then.It might be worth trying this:

You COULD try gently cleaning the contact pads both in the cartridge holder and also on the cartridge(s) with a lint free cotton cloth which you have wetted with a small amount of cleaning alcohol.

Or a cotton bud as shown here

Let them dry before trying to use.

They may not look exactly like this picture but you get the idea?

Solve : My computer powers up but will not boot.?

Answer»

A couple of YEARS ago I bought an eMachines T6216 from a circuit city display. Paid about 600.00 for it and it only RAN for about 6 months. I have had it put up for some TIME now and refuse to give up on it working again someday.

It is an eMachines T6216 with amd athlon 64bit processor (2.0 ghz), with 512 ddr sdram, nvidia geforce 6100 vid, with windows xp sp2 installed.

It powers up and I can hear the harddrive run, all the fans run, but I get no video.
I have tried different monitors, extra video cards, and nothing happens. its still the same. So I figured maybe it was a loose cable or dusty memory so one by one i removed everything except cpu and powersupply. Nothing different. Then I removed the cpu and FAN and heatsink and reseated it so to make sure they weren't loose. I also tried a diff power supply.

I just so badly do not want to have a bad MB. I would be greatfull for any suggestions. thanks.Wow, i have the EXACT same problem, my computer is a emachines too, the only thing difference is your processor is 64bit, everything else is the same. When you removed and reseated that heatsink and fan,did
you clean them and use thermal paste ?sure did street. I have read quite a bit of tech books. Quote from: CarnageX3 on March 27, 2008, 03:00:59 PM

wow, really..sorry to say I am happy to have found someone with the same prob as mine. What have you tried? Tonight I finally broke down and took the entire board out of its case and checked and cleaned it completely. I couldn't find any culprit that would be visible to me.I just put in a new mobo, but nothing is wrong with the one that i had to replace, i just know it, i tried basically about everything, took EVERYTHING (Including processor) out except the PSU "Duh" to see if i could hear a BEEP or something, but still, nothing. So my guess is that lightning ran in on it while i was gone, or didn't know it, still cant believe we had tornadoes and thunderstorms in January. Quote

You can put a MAX of 104 usb ports junctioned by usb hubs.

In the other hand, ordinary mainboards have atmost 1(one) built in lan cards. Other server type boards have atleast 2 built in lan cards.

Solve : I think my external drive crashed my laptop...help please?

Answer»

Hello, I'm new here and will admit I don't know too much about the workings of a computer so I will try to be as descriptive as possible.  I have a sony vaio laptop model PCG-7H1L (2 years old) running window xp media edition.  My son was playing on my computer and I got a few virus warnings (mostly cookie trackers and the like) so I cleaned up my pc and got rid of the problems.  In the process, however, I seemed to have deleted the driver for my sound/audio.  After unsuccessfully looking for a new driver, I decided that I would just restore the factory settings.  I bought a 160 GB Simpletech external hard drive to back up my files.  It took 8 hours to back up 43 GB but it was successful.  Unfortunately, after the back up was complete my computer became unresponsive.  It wouldn't shut down nor would any applications work.  I manually turned of the computer only to find that it wouldn't reboot.  When I try to turn it on, it starts to load and goes through the initial Windows screen (with the green loading bar) and then freezes when it gets to the next blue windows screen and won't go any further.  Did the external drive crash my computer?  Can it be easily FIXED (by me?).  I hope this made some kind of sense and someone can help.  Thank you in advance!!!

Diane

If you're getting an error what is the error message?
Basic details on your computer, manufacturer (Dell, HP, custom built), how much RAM, CPU (Intel/AMD), etc.
If you're having a problem with a software program, game, or utility what version is it? If you're using  Windows this information can often be determined by pressing the F1 key.
If you're having problems with a hardware device such as a printer, modem, video card, etc. mention if you have tried the latest drivers.
When did the issue start occurring? Did you recently install a program, new hardware device, or visit a web page?

Thanks...the computer did work fine after the drop.  Could it have taken a few days for the computer to malfunction?  It just seemed weird that it went screwy immediately after I finished backing it up...odd.Something could have got jarred loose and then worked looser and looser... Simply backing up your files wouldn't cause the symptoms you describe, unless perhaps it got overheated. It's a good job you backed up your files! A though occurs to me - if the computer was switched on and running when it took a dive then the hard drive could have been damaged (the technical term is a "head crash") and further USE (as in an 8 hour backup) could have made things worse.  Maybe a trip to the REPAIR shop is needed.

In my experience laptops and young kids don't always mix very well.

Thanks and you are so RIGHT about the kids.  The funny thing is I never let him use my pc until this week and then wammo!!  I do have an accidental warranty at best buy so I guess I'll go ahead and bring it in.  If it's damaged because of the drop then they will fix it, if not, then I guess I'm no worse off than I am now.  Thanks again!

This isn't a major problem. Unplugging the device will not harm it.
Make sure you have stopped USING the device (like copying to and from it and maybe listening to music on it)
If you REALLY don't want to pull it out of the computer, you can restart the computer and it should be able to pop right out.Are You Sure, Its An MP4, And I Dont Want To Lose AndThing On It, My Friends Said Id Lose My Stuff If I Didnt  Remove It Safley?Maybe during the long term. It would be more harmful if you run programs from it and then remove it without exiting.
I normally use the safety eject but if I'm in a hurry, I sometimes pull it out. Quote from: Spider Pig on March 27, 2008, 07:30:16 AM

Are You Sure, Its An MP4, And I Dont Want To Lose AndThing On It, My Friends Said Id Lose My Stuff If I Didnt  Remove It Safley?

If a program is still accessing it, then stop that program! You don't need to start EVERY word with a capital letter. In fact you should not. If you shut down down the computer then you can definitely unplug your mp4 player safely, but in general it is all right to pull it out.
Worst case scenario if you unplug it without using the safely remove feature is that the data on it may be corrupted if a program is still writing to it, but simply unplugging it should never damage the hardware.
So it is advisable to always use the safely remove feature if you don't want to loose your data.Yes, we're talking about damage to data here, not physical damage. If you are that worried, back up your mp4 data to your PCs hard drive every once in a while.

Solve : Dual problems, System default colors changed, no sound from rear output?

Answer»

Microsoft Windows XP Pro version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 on an Intel pentium 4 processor. This is an Hp Compaq dx2200 microtower pc. PROBLEMS began when I switched from DESKTOP speakers to headphones using the front panel headphone jack. Now the rear audio out no LONGER works. It doesn't matter how I configure the sound through control panel sound options-I am only getting sound through the front headphone jack. I have a Realtek integrated sound chip. I wrote to HP's email tech support and they suggested that I clear my CMOS. Problem is I couldn't see the tiny print on the motherboard well enough to identify the CMOS jumper. So, idiot that I am, I unplugged the cables that were in the area identified on the graphic they sent me near the CMOS. I plugged them all back into their ORIGINAL positions. (I never even saw the CMOS jumper the first time I went in because I had no idea what it looked like.) When I rebooted, all my colors were reset. Everything that is supposed to be blue is green and everything that is supposed to be white is yellow or has a yellowish cast to it. This is also the case even when I am in BIOS so I know it's not a "Windows" setting.   That's problem number two. Back to problem number 1-I went back to the graphic HP referred me to and manipulated it so I could identify the CMOS. I went back in and moved the jumper from pins 2-3 to pins 1-2-did this for 5 seconds as told by them and then returned the jumper to it's original position. After reboot and updating the Realtek sound ARCHITECTURE and it's drivers, I still get no sound from my rear output. And my system colors are still messed up. Any suggestions?PROBLEM 2:
Try to fix any loose connection w/ your monitor connection to the CPU.
If it aint work, try using other good-working monitor.

PROBLEM 1:
I think u have a problem with your front audio jacks. There are some jumper configurations in installing front audio jacks. Try removing the connection of the front jacks from the mother board. Then try the rear jack if it works. If still it does not work, try downloading your motherboard manual for any front-audio-jumper config.

My connections are tight. Btw, I never touched the monitor settings. They were fine before I went on my little escapade to find the CMOS. What other connections to the motherboard could I have undone to cause this? Will try disconnecting the front sound (if I can find it-lol) and let you know how it works out. I unplugged the front audio and voile! my rear jack is now functioning! Thank you. Still having the video problem though.

Solve : Problem with keyboard at startup?

Answer»

I built my computer at least a year ago and recently decided to make some upgrades by switching to a new motherboard and case. I haven't had any problems in the past with the computer but SINCE using the new motherboard, I have been having issues with the keyboard at startup. After FIRST installing the new motherboard, I sent it back and had it replaced thinking that it was something wrong with the motherboard, but I am still getting the error. Basically, when it goes to the motherboard screen, my keyboard fails to work and prevents the computer from booting the os. I tried another keyboard (knowing that both of them work on other SYSTEMS) and both came up with the same error. What makes the problem even more bizzare is that the f-lock on the keyboard (extra key to allow another set of controls on the f-buttons) is always able to be turned on/off, even when it doesn't work, but the caps, num, and scroll do not. I thought that it was a grounding problem and tried removing the I/O panel from the back but that did not help. I then carefully examined it and made sure that the metal pieces were touching where they should and not where they shouldn't. My specs are as follows, keeping in mind that everything other than the motherboard is in working condition
Operating system: MICROSOFT XP Professional
CPU: Intel Pentium D 945
RAM: 2gb (1gb x 2) DDR2
GPU: NVida GEFORCE 7900 GS x2 (SLI)
Motherboard: ASUS P5N-E SLI
Try a keyboard with a PS2 plug.thats it

I had same prob.

Ps2 fixed it.

You get the problem with USB keyboards with programable functions.

When you dont install the driver(s) correctly*Ok, I'll go try it with a ps/2 keyboard. Thanks so much for your help.

Solve : Desktop Bootup Problem?

Answer»

Hello,

I am having a problem with my HP Pavilion a650y desktop computer and am looking for some HELP. About 2 weeks ago I shut down my computer because I was traveling. I left for 2 weeks with the computer shut down but plugged into a surge protector and then into the wall. Upon my return, when I press the power button, there is not response whatsoever from the computer - no sounds, lights, fans, ETC. The same happens when I plug the computer straight into the wall and try to boot up. Looking around to the back of the computer, just below where the power cord connects there is a small GREEN light. While the computer is connected to a power source, this green light clicks and flashes quickly.

While I was GONE for 2 weeks I am told that the power went out a few times.

Can anyone offer some ideas as to what this might be?

Thank you for your time!

-MaxSounds like the power supply mite have overloaded.  If the power went on an off like that.  Iwould try an get another one to test it with if possible.try to use another power cord if available..to SEE if you will still have the same problem..

Solve : replaced older CPU fan on AMD processor now it doesn't turn on and stay on?

Answer»

replaced older CPU fan on AMD processor now it doesn't turn on and stay on
hmmm...
being the 'smart' guy i am, i decided "hey, there's a new AMD cpu fan that came with the processor, let me REPLACE the older one (that i used from the previous AMD i upgraded o..."
well, i replaced it. hooked up the 3 pin fan wire no problem.
And, it won't boot up. there does still seem to be power ..that's for sure. because If i power up it'll turn the fan and the lights on the case, then it all goes out, fan stops also of course.
for me to repeat the above, i must unplug ac power from power supply and try again to power on with power button. the same occurs again.

i have a suspicion of what might be causing this. Overheating?
I did not apply thermal grease between the new fan /heatsink and the CPU.
could this be the problem causing this?

but, if the above is the case, then shouldn't it stay on longer, at least until the cpu would get hot?
i hope the CPU is ok and not fried?!

THE power supply is only about 1 month old. a Corsair 450VX and has been working great.

thanks for any help...Karim
ok, today i pulled the processor out, and blew any dust off of it...then i reinstalled the processor, and applied the thermal grease i PURCHASED today on top and seated the heatsink on top and secured it in place.
i tried to boot up, at least the power stays on now..and I think i hear the harddrive also, however  I see nothing on my display and don't hear it post....
maybe i just have to let the grease 'set' dry....and then it should work
what you all think?

thanks
Karimit won't post...at all.
not even bios coming up it seems.
would this be a sign of the processor being fried...?!
try the old cpu in there and report back.you mean the old heatsink?
put that back in no luck
what i've now also tried:
cleaned both the new and the old heat SINK surfaces off with alcohol, and reapplied new thermal grease.

either heatsink and the CPU give the following:
-computer turns on and stays on (power)
-however does not post, nothing comes up on the display at all.
-i've also cleared the CMOS at least 5 times and that hasn't helped either.

i'm now suspecting the CPU as the problem and am trying to SHOP for one...see what i can get

any other ideas?
thanks
Karim
have you tried your old cpu or was it just the heatsink and fan that you changed?
this coul also be a graphical problem. try reseating your graphics card and making sure that all of the connections are good.Looks like me and you are having the same problem, except i didn't change  heatsinks, if you find a solution inform me.It sounds like it could be heat.  But if you installed the thermal paste properly, it should eliminate that possibility.  Clean both surfaces with rubbing alcohol. Apply thin layer of paste with an old credit card or SOMETHING similar. The layer should be thin and even and cover the whole heat sink.

What kind of hold down system does it have? If it is the spring type that you use a screwdriver to install, you may have damaged your mother board. Did the screwdriver slip off while installing or uninstalling? There are two 3-pin fan power supply in any MainBoard, make sure that you insert the fan to the CPU Fan Power - not the chasis/case fan power. Most AMD supported mainboards does not work if proccessor fan is inserted in Case fan power.

If u really inserted it in the cpu power, make sure u inserted all power supplies - the 24-pin and the 4-pin.

Solve : Cant Boot OS installation Disk?

Answer» HI all, ive just build a new pc, spec as follows:

2GB DDR2 800MHz PC2-6400 240pin
LiteOn DH-20A4P-21C 20X DVD±RW/DL/RAM
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz)
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition w/SP2b
Western Digital WD1600AABB 160GB Hard Drive 7200rpm 2MB Cache
Gigabyte GA-73VM-S2 GeForce 7050 Socket 775
Nvidia Geforce 6200 TurboCache 128MB DDR2

All appears to be working well, bios has detected hard drive,RAM and DVD drive, but when trying to install an OS, it wont boot from the CD, the drive spins briefly but then nothing. Any help would be great. both devices are installed on a single IDE cable is this is an MATX board, the HDD is set to master and the DVD is set to slave.

Thanks

Geraint.in your BIOS you will see a setting something along the lines of "boot priority" or "boot sequence," set the optical drive with your windows CD in it as the first thing to boot. save, reboot, and you will now boot off of the CD.Thanks for reply.
ye, tried that, even put the DVD as 1st, 2nd and 3rd device to boot from, same thing, just a blinking cursor.try the cd on another computer, see if it works. if it does, try your optical drive on another computer. if your optical drive works on another computer, then i suggest setting the optical drive as master and giving it another go.ive tired over disks that i KNOW work, such as a win 98 disk, but il try the drive in a different computer, as i have already tried it as master.

ThanksJust a shot in the dark but worth a try, I have the Gigabyte P35-DS3R with three separate harddrives 1st running Windows XP Home and 2nd running Windows XP Pro 64bit and last but least 3rd one running Linux Ubuntu and at bootup I press F-12 to get the boot sequence. It shows a list of boot devices from USB to CDROM DVDROM etc! Under the HARDDRIVE list it shows all my harddrives, GIVE it a try.

Here is the link to your motherboard,

http://www.gigabyte.us/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=2614
just tried a different CD drive, same results, and i know the discs and the drive work, tried the F12, didnt work. could this be a mobo problem?

ThanksUnhook one of the optical drives and re-boot.
Set whatever drive is left as the first boot device.
Make sure the CD's you are trying are bootable and not copies...most copies are not.im only using 1 optical drive as there is only 1 IDE channel on the mobo,  so if i unplug it there wont be an optical drive on the system, all the disks ive tried are official legal copy's.The hard drive should be jumpered as master w/slave and connected at the end of the IDE cable...
The CDRom should be jumpered as slave and connected to the middle connector of the IDE cable.
Do a few cold boots before you try it again as the BIOS sometimes gets confused when making changes one after another.

If this setup doesn't work the drive is probably headed South.

You may want to try another IDE cable just in case...ive actually tried that configuration already, but ill give it another go, which drive do you think has "gone south", the HDD the the DVD?

Thanks

Solve : Overclocking - How??

i read an article about overclocking ur proccesor and how it can speed up ur proccessor, but by how much, or is there not a limit? and how do i do it?www.overclockers.com

Here's a site I used to visit often.  I've overclocked a couple of COMPUTERS in the past.  I was by no means cutting edge.

My favorite was the guys who overclocked a Celeron 400 Mhz to 600 Mhz (I think) by using ELEVEN case fans and a HEPA filter!    Quote from: Aegis on March 20, 2008, 04:14:13 PM

with all of that, he should get more then a 200mHz gain.

depends on your CPU cooling, it also depends on how high your motherboard will allow you to up the CPU voltage, unless you voltmod your mobo.thnxYeah, I don't remember the exact NUMBERS, Homer, but that was my impression...I know they pushed it to physical limits.Celeron 400MHz CPUs were good overclockers I believe . . . bit before my time though.
Remember that's a 50% OC, not bad.

Solve : Why do i get one long beep??

Answer»

I worked on a computer recently. I removed the hard drive to have it scanned and replaced it. When i restarted the computer it got a loud beep that would not stop unless i unplugged the machine and the machine would not boot.

The machine has a phoenix bios so i checked the list of beep codes to see what the beep means but there is no reference for the beep i was getting. What could cause this beep. Can anyone tell me?

The computer is a desktop pc running windows xp that is only used for surfing the internet. He complained of it being slow and the cpu is always busy so i tried to help. IT has no anti virus, no firewall and no ad ware and SPY ware remover. I decided to  remove the drive put it in an enclosure and scan it with my anti virus. When i scanned the hard drive i found over 500 viruses MOSTLY Trojan horses.

The motherboard is an integrated board with only a pci 56k modem installed.

At the moment i cant tell you any specifics about hardrive, memory or service packs because the pc is at my friends house. I would have to get that information and put it  here tomorrow or so. Quote from: Tangfirmer

Can anyone tell me?

Not until you tell us what breed of pc you worked on.  Please read this..

e.g. the following was posted in response to a similar query referring to an HP laptop.  We can't be expected to give you a diagnosis of any kind without knowing what we're TRYING to deal with.

Quote
The continous beep usually means a memory failure (RAM) or video memory if a PLUGIN card is used. Check to be sure the unit sees all of the memory, a WEAK power source( without AC adapter) could cause a partial failure of one memory card. Another fault would be that the battery is very low on charge and won't accept any charge. BAD Battery. You really need to check out the user manual for the real meanings.

Solve : My laptop hates my USB storage devices?!?!?!??

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP.

For the past 4 months I have been using a Western Digital Passpart 160gb external hard drive. However just recently the laptop fails to recognize the hard drive. When I went to try the hard drive on other COMPUTERS I got the same message.

I thought it was just the hard drive but last night I connected my digitial camera and while the computer recognizes it was a camera, it could not read any of the pictures. I plugged the camera into another laptop - no problems. Plugged it back into my laptop -still not working.

I later plugged it back into the laptop that it was working on- this time SAME PROBLEM as my Vaio.  Tried a 3rd computer that I had used the camera on the previous day SAME PROBLEM,  Nothing's wrong with the camera's memory card - I checked. USBs on it work as I am using a laptop cooler & optical mouse through USB.   Tried MOVING USB slots around.  Could it be that my Vaio laptop is ruining the HD & camera making them useable on other computers?  Any ideas as to what is going on and if the problem is reverseable?I may have a theory but I will need more information to confirm it....

Quote

When I went to try the hard drive on other computers I got the same message.
Do you mean that now, after you have connected to the Vaio, the PORTABLE devices are no longer being recognized or what?
Is there any message/error message?Correct, the hard drive is not being recognized on any of the computers that I have tried.  The error comes up "USB Device Not Recognized".  For the camera there is no error message. The computer(s) identify it as a camera but the computer does not read the pictures.  Also when the auto window pops up to choose a program to view the pictures with nothing is listed - nothing at all no ICONS, nothing. Then I think my theory is wrong

For the pictures, have you tried right-clicking on the image, CLICK Open With and choose the imager you want to view them with.It doesn't give me the "Open With" option.  When I right click and choose Open or Explore the graphic with the camera and computer comes up runs for awhile and then shows the window with 0 files.  However the camera has pictures on it and I even took the memory card and put it in a build-in reader on one of the laptops (not vaio) and there didn't appear to be any strange on it.

Solve : Hard drives divided?

Answer»

I tried searching for an answer but couldn't find one...probably because I do not know the correct terminology so I apologize in advance!

Anyway, a while back I brought my computer to a local service place to be repaired...it turned out that the video card had overheated and needed to be replaced. I have 2 hard drives on the computer, one is 80 GB and the other is 120 GB.

However, when I got the computer back, they had "divided" these drives into 4...I am not sure why but assumed it was done to make my computer run better.

The problem is, they MADE the DRIVE where I install all my PROGRAMS on...the "C" drive, a measly 35 GB, and I have run out of space to install programs! I would like to know how to REMOVE these artificial divisions so that I could have my original 80 GB and 120 GB drives back, if possible.

I truly appreciate any help, as this has been a big ISSUE for me the past month.

Thanks very much,

Julianif they have allready been formatted and information is on them then you will lose all of the data on them.http://partitionlogic.org.uk/

Solve : ATI Radeon bios flash?

Answer»

Hi guys. I have a Sapphire ATI Radeon 7000 64 MG DDR PCI video card that I got at a garage sale. The person I got it from said that it was in a Mac. Now I want to use it in one of my PC's, but the bios is flashed for a Mac. I know that this card is capable of being used in either one, depending on what bios is flashed on it. The problem is I cannot find a bios for PC. I have searched for OEM and modded bios's. I know the card works, Iv'e installed it and used it, but I get red verticle lines on all my screens no matter what computer or what version of drivers I use. All of my research tells me this is because of it being flashed for a Mac. And yes I do know that the GPU being overheated and damaged can cause this. But I'm hoping it's just the MAC bios. So if someone could help me out I would really appreciate it.Hmm,people are reading but no one is replying. I hope that dosen't mean that there is no way to find the bios for this card.I'm not aware of any flash that will accomplish this...as far as i know they are manufactured for one or the other but not both...
Have you visited the manuf. website ? ?
I still think this will be a wild goose chase though. When I Googled this, I found out that both ATI and Nvidia cards bios's are flashable. There are forums dedicated to flashing these cards for Mac's. They offer the tools and files to do this. I also found forums to flash them to unlock them to enable more pipelines and OC the GPU and memory. Supposedly some cards are also upgradeable.  I can find alot of Bios files for these cards, just not for my model. If you do a Google on ATI or Nvidia Bios you will find alot of info on doing this. If you go to http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/91 there is a good article on this little known fact. I just cannot seem to find one for my card.Forgot to mention that yes I did go to ATI's website and found nothing. But they ARE out there! There is nothing in your reference that states a flash will take a Mac vid card and make it work on Windows...as i said i've NEVER heard this can be done.

Maybe one of our Resident vid card guru's here such as Calum or others will be along shortly but i still think a goose is involved here...     Here is the link for info on flashing from PC to MAC http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=459095
So shouldn't you be able to flash it back?If this actually worked why the heck would the manufacturers build 2 different cards to take to market ? ?
They could just manufacture one card and ship it with the flash needed for the appropiate OS being used....this would eliminate having 2 seperate inventories of vid cards on the shelves for retailers as well....
Quote from: soybean on March 22, 2008, 10:58:28 AM

I saw this guy on the golf course last year Soybean ! !

 Well, lets see.
1. Not everyone would want/know how to do this. People expect to buy it and just have it work.
2. ATI (from what I have read) doesn't want to do this because they can charge more money for the MAC version.
3. There are alot of graphic cards that can be softmodded to a higher more expensive model by UNLOCKING pipelines and or overclocking them to meet the specs of a more expensive card. I guess its more of a marketing/convenience thing.#1 Doesn't make sense...an install CD could run the flash.

#2  I don't get it...

#3  Has nothing to do with attempting to get a vid card MADE for a Mac to run on Windows.Well I didn't mean to make it so complicated. I was just wondering if someone could help me find the correct bios for this otherwise useless(to me) card. It couldn't hurt to try, I'm not out anything if it doesn't work. But I guess if this is a dead end I'll just put it back on the shelf with my other spare parts. This thread brought back memories. About 4 years ago I flashed a 3 day OLD Radeon 7000 card with an updated firmware, just, well, because I could. I followed the instructions on a website I had found, and it didn't work AFTERWARDS. As in totally dead. I took it back to the shop and said it had stopped working. (Well, it had!) They gave me a replacement...

Just thought I'd mention that.

I'm not sure if the Garage Sale would have the same return Policy...

Solve : Server Motherboard?

I am building a new server for some friends of mine in an ENGINEERING firm.  I want to be able to utilize the Intel Xeon 3000 SERIES processors (775 socket, 1333MHz FSB, etc).  What would be the best, most reliable motherboard I can find to USE for this project?  The basic requirements, other than CPU needs, are that the motherboard must have SATA RAID, 10/100/1000 LAN, ECC supported memory and on-board video.  I need bullet-proof reliability.

Solve : 3.5 Floppy disc removal not recognized.?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP.  When I use "My Computer" and click on Drive A it recognizes a DISC if present.  The problem occurs when I remove the floppy.  I can close "My Computer" and when I reopen it and click on Drive A it shows that the disc is still there.  It will even so a directory if I click on one of the folders shown.  If I put a DIFFERENT disc into the drive it will still show the info from the original disc.

The drive will read and write correctly.
It's normal BEHAVIOR. Before you remove floppy highlight something else, then drive A, in Windows Explorer. Drive C, for instance. Remove floppy, and upon restarting Windows Explorer, it won't show any folders/files in drive A.I tried that many times.  It still gives me a directory of the floppy that was there first.Did you try the "Refresh" item from one of the pull-down menus of the My_Computer window (File, EDIT, View)?  Don't currently have Windows XP system available so I don't recall which menu it's on.View>Refresh, or F5Tried refreshing from several pull down menus but that doesn't work EITHER.
