Solve : Add hard drive? Please help!!!!?

Answer»

I need a little advice on whether I can add another Hard drive to my existing IDE 1 Port. Will the XP OS Automatically transfer to the New one? You cannot MOVE a hard drive with XP installed on it from one machine to another and expect it to function...

If you are trying to do something else i didn't understand, please clarify.Hi,
Thank you for the reply. I have a dell dimension with a pentium 4, 1.7 ghz processor and the HD is only 10 or so gigs and I recently bought a 120 gig Drive I'd like to install. I just would like to know if the OS on the master drive will incorporate itself to the new one if used as a SLAVE?
Thanx, JeffYou can install the second hard drive as a data drive. That's about it. Windows doesn't copy itself to new hard drives.
However, you can make the new hdd the master and install windows onto it and have a dual boot system. Or you can use the old drive as the data drive. There is another option....
You can use the disk manuf. utilities to "clone" the old drive to the new drive.
This will result in abootable drive that is an exact replica of your old drive as it is now.....except for more space.

This approach makes the most amount of sense in your situation as you won't have to bother re-installing everything and getting things situated as you like them...

You basically install the new drive as a slave then boot with the drive manuf. CD and prepare the new drive and then do the clone operation.
When you are finished you remove your old drive completely...hook up the new one as master on IDE1 and re-boot and you are good to go.

You can then format the old drive...hook it up as a slave and use it gfor extra storage.

p.s. If you did not recieve a CD with the HDD just travel to the manuf. site and DLoad their disk utilities. When u add another hard drive, this second harddrive mus be set as slave. Your 1st harddrive where winxp is installed is the primary drive. Installing another harddrive will not automatically transfer your os to the new drive. If ur new drive or the 2nd harddrive has an operating system installed in it, your pc will still boot on the 1st drive or the primary drive. You and michaewlewis should both read Patio's advice up there. Quote from: patio on May 15, 2007, 09:44:01 PM

What of course you can..The point is, you MIGHT get lucky, but you shouldn't expect it to work.

What about the activation? Is that copy licensed to another machine? You may get another surprise in 30 days.Quote from: tinfed2 on May 18, 2007, 03:06:09 AM

How many machines have you done this on and gotten the drive to boot up ? ?You can sometimes achieve success by, before transferring the disk, GOING into Device MANAGER and DELETING everything, and then in the new machine Windows (laboriously) finds all the "new" hardware... Needless to say, this is best done with one of those versions of Windows that (ahem) doesn't need activation. Agreed. But most are just swapping them around blindly from machine to machine hoping something works...

Solve : No Picture No Keyboard / RESOLVED?

Answer»

I just built my computer and it was working fine for a few WEEKS. I had it in my basement and my basement flooded a little. Now i dont think that any components got wet because it was on a high table. But i BROUGHT it upstairs and tried to turn it on a few days later and the computer seems to run fine (Fans work, lights up, etc.), but i am not getting any picture on the monitor and the monitor works. The keyboard is also not lighting up. Someone please help me im really nervous. THANKS in advance, JustinEven if it didn't get wet, it still may have been damaged. Perhaps from humidity or something. The keyboard and monitor work on another computer? Do another monitor and keyboard work on this one? What OS are you using? Have you checked inside for any signs of DAMAGE, or perhaps loose cables?Justin123 ......That doesn't sound good.
How long was the machine exposed to the moisture in the basement ?
My first question is ....do you have insurance ?
Next , I would try the following.
Open up the tower and and use a large fan to circulate ambient air through the machine..... ( with all that moisture present in the wet basement, the interior of the machine may have absorbed some ) Then once you are 100% SURE that things are completely dry......... Remove and reseat all the ram and any plug in cards.
Open up the keyboard and make sure there's no moisture in it .
Use another machine to test the mouse, keyboard and monitor.
Check all the parts inside the tower for any signs of corrosion as well.

Once you are confident that everything is dry ......put everything back together and try to boot up the machine again.

The monitor and everything works and even know there was no picture on the monitor i still got one POST beep when i started it up. Also its not the graphics card because i never even installed the drivers for the graphics card yet and it was running on integrated graphics.Try the monitor on another machine to see if it works...

Replace the keyboard with a brand new one...the monitor and keyboard work but since i bought from new egg they said theyll take the mobo bak. Props to emGood deal! Thanks for posting back on this, Jason.newegg is doing such high volume now they practically bend over backwards for the Customer...a pretty successful business model if you ask me.

Do them a favor since they did you one. Recommend them to all your friends.Who keeps adding the SOLVED tag?

Beats me...Is it you? Your name turns up in every thread. I think it is dl65.

Solve : Replacing hard drive: ATA-6 to ATA-7?

Answer»

Hi,

My Compaq Presario 2568CL laptop's HARD drive is having "SMART Failure PREDICTED" message and Windows cannot boot up any more. Can I replace the hard drive, which is of ATA-6 Interface, with a new hard drive with an ATA-7 Interface (it is on sale!)? I think it is OK but would appreciate your expert opinion.

Thanks in ADVANCE!Does your laptop have a SATA interface? If so, you can use an ATA-7 drive with it, if not, you will have to use an ATA-6 drive.

ATA-1 to ATA-6 .... IDE interface
ATA-7 .... SATA interface
ATA-8 .... designated for use with hybrid drives that feature internal flash MEMORY cache.

Solve : No Battery?

Answer»

As a result of the recent refference to a program called "Everest' on another CH forum i WENT crazy and ran a system check on a bunch (7 computers we have in the house). On 2 of them i get a value responce beside "battery" ="no battery". Both computers are functioning without problems (including keeping proper time even after prolonged shutdowns). Is this NORMAL?Should i be concerned about this?Is it something that can be addressed and if so how? Thanks, truenorthWe have another CH forum? Were they laptops running on AC? If so, do they have a "smart battery"?If they were desktops there is no battery, as such, except the CMOS which will not be measured.1. Raptor, WOULD you prefer that i refer to the others as "destinations"?
2.2k_dummy,Oh how i wish at least one of them were a laptop --but no they are all desktops.
3.GX1_Man, Yes they are all desktops. However given that fact what concerned me was that of all of them scanned only 2 gave that value. The other 5 if i remember correctly gave no value beside the item (which i assumed to mean all was fine). Hense my question on the 2 with the "no battery" especially since as FAR as i know most if not all recent computers do contain a battery.Given how complete that "Everest " scan seems to be i did believe that it was in refference to the CMOS battery.Thank you all for your replies. truenorth

Solve : How do I get rid of this? / SOLVED?

Answer»

hey,

Well my computer at home is receiving a similar problem to this in this picture I found.

Can anybody tell me what the h**l is going on, mine is much worse than that, I can barely see anything. What happened before this started?
What monitor and video card do you have, and what OS?
Have you tried ANOTHER monitor, or tried that monitor on another PC?
How old is the PC and monitor?
When was the PC last cleaned out?
And do you have unshielded speakers or other sources of interference near this monitor?
What kind of monitor is it?What happened before this started?

What kind of monitor is it?

1. It was going slow (the pc in general)
2. Monitor is a sharp 19" (all I KNOW) and video card, no Idea because im not at home at the moment, I am using XP
3. Yeah I have tried the monitor on another computer.
4. Yes the tower was cleaned out today.
5. Speakers are shielded and haven't worked for some time. How old is the PC, and how old is the monitor?
We'll need info on the video card when you have it too.everything is 2 years oldQuote

3. Yeah I have tried the monitor on another computer.
4. Yes the tower was cleaned out today.

Let us know about the video card. You can DLoad and run Everest Home for all that data.

What was the result with the monitor on another machine ? ?

You didn't use a vaccuum to clean the tower did you ? ?I've encountered this issue in the past, and what I would suggest is to reseat your video by just taking it out and putting it back in again, and making sure it is screwed in tightly. You may also want to screw in the cord on your monitor securely to the back of the computer. And if it's a loose cord in the monitor, try jiggling it around a few times till you get a clear picture. Most likely, one of these solutions will clear it up.ah, right I have the invoice in front of me and I think this is it: 128MB RADEON 9800SE ALL IN WONDER

Monitor worked fine on another computer, and I'm not sure whether my dad hovered it or notwell i've supplied my video card, anybody know what i need to do nextDLoad a fresh copy of your video drivers from the manuf. site.
Uninstall the current drivers and re-boot. Windows will load generic drivers...enough to function at least.
Re-install the fresh drivers.

It should be as simple as a driver issue as the monitor performed normally on another machine...well its fixed now, removed graphics card, tried another and it was fine...then messed about with msconfig and stuff, put normal graphics card in (which is top notch apparently) and its fine, MUST have just need taking out and putting back in

Solve : Motherboard Swap?

Answer»

I have a motherboard in a emachines desktop that went bad and what im WANTING to do is swap a motherboard from my COMPAQ. Both motherboards have the same PROCESSOR, memory and look identical (micro ATX) except for different brand names. Will I have any problems with this swap? I dont care if the emachines reads Compaq durring startup. Will I have to make any changes at all? Both machines running XP home. THANKS in advanceFirst, I have to say that I wouldn't do it.
Although, Windows XP is pretty good at recognizing new hardware, so it might work just fine. Chances are that the motherboards need different sets of drivers that tell the OS what to do with the mobo and what the mobo should do with everything else. If these drivers aren't the first thing to be installed, it will possible not boot windows.

My recommendation? Backup all the data on the hard drive (put it into another computer and copy your files), make the swap, and reinstall windows.
I went ahead and ordered one from tiger direct. I figured that would be alot easier than robbing peter to pay paul. Thank You for your reply, I kinda figured I would have a problem trying to boot windows after doing that. Does the eMachine still boot ? ? ?

If so there is a method ( a bit complicated ) to swap MBoards and still have XP boot normally and SAVE you some grief ...

Let us know.

Solve : Bad System Disk??

Answer»

Figured I'd leave yuns with another, hope this is the right section to post this in.
I've been playing with my old CTX, reformatted the HD & tried to install 2000 on it since it didn't have enough room for the Linux I was gonna try.
This may be a CD-Rom problem,..just dont know.
The computer has a 300Ghtz processor, 256mb ram, with a 2.6gb Western Digital HD. The CMOS is set to boot CD. When I boot up & get to the 2nd part of the boot window I get a message that I have a "Bad System Disk"..replace disk & hit any key to continue. It does this with two 98 disks, my 2000 disk, & I even got the local computer shop to burn me a fresh copy of 2000 & still does it. Now ocassionally it will boot up & start install, but stops loading system files about halfway through. I can put the Linux disk I burned in & it will boot every time. I have a Linux live cd that won't boot either.
I've tried three different cd roms & the same results. Now all this stuff is from the yrs 97 to 2000 in age so I guess they couldall be bad but to all go out at once ?
Something else..the ram is out of a Mac (98 mdl) but shows up on boot so I don't think thats the problem but I'm still learning. The ram that came out was two 32mb chips, non ecc, & the ones from the mac are two 128's non ecc

So...any ideas on if it MIGHT be bad cd roms, or HD, or.....
Yeah I know....new computer would solve everything....so would MORE money!!!!
Thanks for any suggestions!!Use a W98 boot FLOPPY (with CDrom support).

1. Debug
2. fdisk
3. format/s

Reboot with a floppy or the W98 CD (with CDrom support). Watch the screen and note the drive letter assigned to the CDrom. Insert the desired windows installation disk. cd\ to the CDrom and run the setup.OK, done, it shows D as the cd drive. When I type in D:\>Setup it give this message:...Your program caused a divide overflow error. If problem persists, contact program vendor.
Now if I select load 98 from cd it starts the os loading onto the HD. But once it starts copying system files it freezes somewhere along the process, both with 98 & 2000. Just baffling me.What if you take out the Mac chips? Any difference in the process?Haven't tried that. I just figured that since it would read bootable floppies, & the CD's sometimes that it was something else. As the computer starts up & runs the diagnostics it always shows the proper amount of memory. Plus when it is running the CD for the little time it does it's faster than before going through each step. One thing I did catch was that on the 98 cds, or the 2000,
once it reacher the point of loading system files it ALWAYS starts hanging up at 17% on the progress bar. Then I start getting the windows pop up: unable to copy (insert file name, such as drivers.cab) then the buttons to try again, skip file or quit install. I DOWNLOADED a program from the WD site called dlgdiag. It runs a diagnostic to check the HD completly & it says the HD is OK. Just finished running a test on it to write zeros to the HD & it say no errors found. Handy little tool. Runs from DOS.
I'll change the ram back around as soon as I get a chance & see what happens. Thanks! You would want to make sure your disc is clean. If it is an original, you may want to burn a copy to a new CD.Thats covered too I guess, now one 98 disk is kinda "used" but the other one looks fine to the eye. I got a brand new cd with 2000 burned on it & plan to burn another copy of it myself for future use. I'll try to change the ram back later, if that don't cure it then it's bout got to be the CD_roms....all 3 of them. Everything is set right in the bios, the computer was working fine when it went to the attic. The only changes I MADE when i brought it down was the ram, & I changed the HD's cause I was just wanting to tinker some. It didn't really surprise me when the linux wouldn't go on, but since it partially installed I ad to reformat to start over & everything has gone haywire from there. I even found a format tool on the WD site that sets the HD up to install 98, 2000, or XP. Seeing how I have 3 HD's that are WDs' it's handy too. The HD on my Dell, a 8.5GB had an expected life cycle of 5 yrs according to their specs...it's going strong at almost 10yrs!
Anyway I'll get back after I have a chance to change ram! Appreciate it!OK New day rolls around.
I changed the ram back to the original 64, tried to install 2000....froze at 17% of system files. Put in the 98 & it installed completly. So I guess a combination of ram & bad cd. I've checked on the net about the ram & best I can figure every single piece of ram I have has the same speed..100mhz. The 128's I mean. Oh well at least i can get back to tinkering...plus it gives BH (my squirrel ) something to try to get into. Thanks! There is more to RAM than speed to ensure compatibility in some computers.

Solve : Dell Splashscreen comes up, but no HD spins?

Answer»

Recently my Dell laptop (SmartStep 250N) powered off during its Windows update.

(I've had some problems with this computer in the past; it hasn't recognized its battery in years. Also, this is the model with the bad heat sync, so when it is processing really really hard, it overheats and can power off.)

Anyway, when I tried rebooting, I got the main Dell splash screen.

That's it.

Nothing else.

So I hit "F2" and got the "Setup Utility Loading, Please Wait....." message.

That's it.

Nothing else.

=====

I tried booting with a Linux LiveCD, but nothing. Also tried the OEM Windows CD.

I was thinking it may have overheated and crashed while Windows update was writing to the boot record... But then why wouldn't it boot off a CD?

THOUGHTS?You appear to be back to the overheating issue,or your
hard drive failed.Um, thanks.

Is there anything to do?See, 'coz I'm wondering - if it's a hard drive failure, wouldn't I be able to load off a CD?

I don't want to put in a new HD if there's something inside the machine that won't even boot up in the first place...

Like when I hit F2, regardless of whether or not the HD is working, it should still do SOMETHING, right?!?F2 should still get you into the BIOS, where you could see if the hard drive is being recognized in a functioning machine. It just hangs on the "Setup Utility Loading, Please Wait" message.... I LET it hang for about ten MINUTES and gave up.

I have a total backup, so I am not against putting in a new HD (though I suspect I won't ever find the right one!), but before I put in the effort, I'd like to TROUBLESHOOT a bit.

Solve : acer recovery drive?

Answer»

i have a acer laptop,it's RUNS vista home,i deciced to put on WINXP because of wireless problems.
It has 1 hhd partitioned ,as c:/--- and a partition as data.
So i installed the winxp on the data drive.
When doing this i noticed the acer vista hidden drive.
Anyway to acess the hidden drive in times of trouble you press alt+F10,BUT WINXP still loads.by the way the vista c:/ drive won't load i can't ACCESS it,so i put in another partition in windows boot up,then the vista drive showed up in dual boot but didn't load screen went grey.
bios says enable disc recovery then rebbot, but winxp load only.
how do i get to the vista backup drive,or the vista c:/ drive.

Thanks for any help as it's a present now i've buggered it.
TinfedIt was probably a VERY bad IDEA to do this. So you have destroyed the Acer backup partition to reinstall VISTA and you have messed up the boot loading sequence. The oldest Windows should always be loaded first, but since you have no Vista DVD (I presume) then you will now be unable to remedy this.

I would contact ACER pronto. Actually the recovery partition is still intact so is the vista c:/.i just nned to fix the mbr.
The drive is partition 3 times vista about 40gig ,data about 32 where i installed winxp it was clean, and a 17 gig PARTITON for the recovery vista.
So they are there just have to get rid of winxp to acess them.See the below site.

Edit: Fixed it...I think its just that my computer DOESNT like the printer because its working fine on a laptopQuote from: dl65 on May 15, 2007, 07:06:45 PM

where you see page size, make sure you have letter showing.... ( thats A4 isnt it 8.5"*11")

"Letter" is US/Canada paper size, A4 is different.

A4 is 210 mm X 297 mm, 8.3" x 11.7"

US Letter is 216 mm x 279 mm, 8.5" x 11"

The A4 Metric paper size has been adopted by every country in the world except the United States and Canada. In Mexico, Colombia and the Philippines, despite the ISO standard having been OFFICIALLY adopted, the U.S. "letter" format is still in common use.

How can I set it back to where it just prints normally without the page in between?

PLEASE HELP!!!!kjohns ...... Perhaps a read of the manual will give you that info or perhaps go into the printers control PANEL ........ you should be able to turn that OPTION off. If you are still unable to disable that function , try contacting HP ....they should be able to sort it out for you.

Solve : Resolution Keeps Changing On Its Own?

Answer»

My Resolution Keeps Changing On Its Own!!

I have a laptop (Compaq) that CHANGES resolutions on its own with no prompting to. The screen just goes blank and it goes from 1024X768 (which I like) to 640x480. You can change it back, then it does it again a few minutes later.

a) I have Windows XP

b) When you go to the display properties, it says: (Multiple Monitors) on ATI RAGE Mobility (COMPAQ)

c) When you go to the DEVICE manager, it has: -Digital Flat Panel (1024x768), -Generic Television, -Default MONITOR

d) It is not hooked up to a tv or flat display, or even another monitor

e) I disabled the other monitors and kept the default monitor enabled, and it doesn't fix the problem.

f) I have tried to update the driver on the Default Monitor and Windows could not update (I don't have a disk for it or ANYTHING)

g) It used to have Windows 2000 on it and I updated it to WinXP and that didn't fix it.

I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING! IT IS HORRIBLY ANNOYING!

Disable all but the digital flat panel and see if it stabilises...You might get the latest drivers ,and change the refresh rate.It could also be the vram on the card not working.
Try it in another computer. with the same game.Try booting into Safe Mode, removing ALL the monitors and rebooting.

Solve : Start-up issues...?

Answer»

Hello.

I have a Packard Bell imedia 1538, and it's been fine for about 18 months. LAST week it just decided to not turn on.. It just stayed making its little warming up noise and nothing came up on the monitor. I turned it off at the mains for a day and next time I turned it on it was fine. It did it again today, and (on closer inspection...) I noticed that above the power switch a little light was flashing, a little picture shaped like a cylinder.
Does anyone happen to KNOW what that light means or what the problem is?
Any help is much appreciated - my coursework depends on it! Hehe.

Thanks!First off, the next time the computer WORKS back up all your work. It'll safe you alot of trouble if the computer decides to die on you. That little light shaped like a cylinder with the flashing light is showing hard drive activity....

Nothing abnormal there.

The power issue could indicate a FAILING PSU.

To test this without buying one borrow a known working one for a day or so and swap it into your machine.
Make sure it is of the same or greater wattage than what you have currently.Okay, I'll give it a go, thanks Your Power supply could be overheating. Check the power supply fan if its working. You might as well check your videocard fan. If the fans are working, try replacing your power supply. Before you this, you must TROUBLESHOOT your memory and videocard as well. malfunctioning memory and video card result to blackout. You see nothing on the monitor w/c is on or on standby mode. Try removing the memory 1st and reinstall it properly. wiping the conductors of the memory will help. Avoid electro static discharge however.

Solve : Code 10 with wireless NIC- bad driver???

Answer»

Just installed two TPLink 802.11g/b cards and second card cannot start. GETTING code 10. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers several times to no avail. Is there a system conflict with having two of the same NICs? teppichkopf ........ Why are you installing 2 of these adapters?...... or did I miss read something ?

dl65 You read correctly. I put these on a Server 2003 box. Trying to set up routing for wireless LAN to connect to another network. Not sure if it's even possible. Ultimately I want them to serve as a repeater.

Maybe they have an IRQ conflict? I've switched PCI slots for the card but it didn't MAKE a difference.

Solve : Checksum error problem/ SOLVED?

Answer»

Hello everybody,
I' m Panagiotis from Greece and here is the problem i have. This is my system :
------------------
System Information
------------------
Operating System: Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2
System Manufacturer: AWARD_
System Model: AWRDACPI
BIOS: )Phoenix - Award WorkstationBIOS v6.00PG (SIS 648 FX-A)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT
Memory: 1024MB RAM

The other day changing some settings in my BIOS i had black screen and no response when i tried to enter setup (del). I cleared the JP1 jumper, which resets my bios settings to defaults. After that everytime with my first boot, and only with my first boot, i have a checksum error message telling that a new cpu was detected and prompting me to press F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup. I 'm changing some settings but when i turn off and boot again i have the same message and the date and TIME of my cmos is reseted.
I tried the following with no result:
1. Changed the cmos battery with a new one
2. Load Fail-Safe Defaults option
3. Load Optimized Defaults Option
Another thing that i noticed is that there is an option in my bios settings which is called :
Over Clock FUNCTION (enter)
When i press enter i can see the following options :
CPU frequency (200)
Over CPU Vcore function [normal]
Over DDR Vcc function [normal]
CPU:DRAM Frequency Ratio [SPD]
I think the value on CPU frequency, wich is 200 in my case is a bit STRANGE. What do you think ? Do you think tha changing this value in 100 fo example will resolve my problems ? Do you have any SUGGESTIONS for my problem.

Thank you in advance
Your cpu frequency of 200 MHz is the normal one. That is the "front-side-bus" frequency. It is internally multiplied (In your case 14 times) inside the CPU to provide the actual CPU clocksignal. Do not alter it unless you want even more problems!

Thank you Contrex. Now i'm trying something else. Somebody told me to leave my p.c. open for 24 hours and see if this help's.try updating your BIOS, and let us know what happens.Quote from: hyperhedron on May 15, 2007, 03:41:20 AM

That is correct.Updating a BIOS is a last resort.Do you happen to remember the other changes you made in the BIOS ? ?I think that the settings i changed and create the original problem (black screen, no response from keyboard) are settings related to dram cas latency. But i think that this can't be a problem cause i cleared the cmos and everything returned to default and i am able to boot into windows and once logged on my p.c. work's like a charm. The only problem is that for some reason cmos doesn't keep date/time/settings and everytime with my first boot, and not with a restart for example, i get the checksum error message.Problem solved by just installing the battery the wright way (writing up).
Thank you allQuote
Problem solved by just installing the battery the wright way (writing up).

What, like the one you took out?

You know, I wondered about that. It was clearly not HOLDING CMOS contents while powered off.
Which it wouldn't with the battery in upside down. The lesson is, before changing or removing anything on the mother board, make a little sketch of how things are and put in all kinds of information such as "battery has writing facing upwards" or "red wire goes to left" etc. You'd be surprised how much time and trouble can be saved.

Solve : PC Won't boot OS after BIOS?

Answer»

Help! My Vista gaming rig recently stopped working. It wil run thorugh BIOS fine, but after it posts all I get is a BLINKING CURSOR on the top left of the screen, no OS, no nuthin'. My ASUS Crosshair mobo has been replaced by ASUS, so they found SOMETHING wrong with it, but even after the replacement I'm still having the exact same problem. Putting in my Vista disc doesn't have any effect. I THINK it might be my SATA SEAGATE Barracuda 250GB hard drive, bt I can't be sure- it spins up and the read light blinks a bit, but nothing else.

Can someone please offer some guidance?! Thanks!check your bios settings to make sure it recognizes the disk drives and cd/dvd drives. Make sure they are set to boot in an order (cd first, then hdd). Thanks for the reply, but I tried all different combinations of boot priority. As the pc posts BIOS and then won't go further, it looks like my SATA HD somehow bit the dust. I'm gonna buy an inexpensive smaller SATA drive to make sure the connection works, and if it does I'll barrage Seagate with nastiness so that they fix my HD (hopefully). If anyone else has any ideas, by all means lemme know!

Cheers.Use the pause key to see for sure the HDD is being detected....and or enter Setup to see if it is there and healthy. The HD IS being detected by my BIOS, which is the weird part. It reads the proper HD ID in the proper SATA port, and the HD spins up a little, but no OS boot :-/ I'm going in a few minutes to pick up a WD 160GB SATA hard drive, we'll see if I can format and instal Vista on it and get it running.

Thanks for the reply! The problem is since XP when there is a major hardware change which you have the OS gets cranky and doesn't want to behave...

Repair install of Vista

Note: I have not tried this method as of yet as my Vista install has so far had no problems...it's on my todo list....OK, now I'm flummoxed. I get a blue screen of death (Driver overstacked the buffer?! Its a newly formatted drive, how are there even all that many drivers ON THERE?!) after installing Vista on my BRAND NEW HDD, and then when I tried to do the repair on my old drive from the site you guys sent me to, Vista won't load up to do the repair, it gets stuck perpetually at the loading bar. When I switched back to the new drive again the pc loads to the blue screen of death and then restarts again and again.

This is getting worse and worse, man...Try installing XP if you have a XP disk. If XP works fine, then you can either blame it on vista, the mobo or hdd. You could download a linux live cd (like ubuntu) and see if linux works too. I've gotten linux to work on hard drives that windows can't work with. You may want to download and run the free diagnostics available at the appropriate hard drive maker's site.Gang-

Thanks for all the help, but in the end it looks like it was something simpler than I realized. I finally tracked down the BSOD error message (it would flash and reboot so quickly I couldn't catch it) and it looks as though one of my 1GB sticks of Corsair XMS2 RAM went bad. I'm gonna RMA that *censored*! Thanks again folks.

People don't think Corsair is worth the price...but doesn't it feel just GREAT to send one back for a brand new stick ? ? ?

Troubleshoot the memory. If u have a spare memory, use it. If u r using 2 memories, remove one of them. Boot using either of the memory. One of them could be malfunctioning.Netori, The problem is already solved. Didn't you read that up there? Or from another thread :

Quote

This usually happens when you install an old memory to a new mboard. Try REMOVING the memory and reinstall it again. Make sure you insert it properly. wiping the memory conductors before installing it might help. Beware of Electro static discharge (ESD) however.

Solve : weird thing with CD drives?

Answer»

Im having a problem with my Sony DVD drive and a Sony CD burner. I have them configured as DVD = master, burner = slave. After I have them hooked up they show up in the BIOS as UNKNOWN Devices. And dont show up on windows but if I unplug the burner, the DVD SHOWS up and works fine. Visa Versa, So I dont understand what the problem is

My computer is a DELL Precision 330 (somewhat problematic)
stuff plugged in...

Sony DVD
Sony CD-RW
250 GbHDD
20 Gb HDD
20 Gb HDD
20 Gb HDD

last two are through a Promise Ultra 100 PCI IDE card thing.

Everything else works fine but Im lost with the Cd drives, any suggestions?
Hook up just the burner as master and it should be at the end of the ribbon cable. Leave the other drive out for now.
Burners should be master anyways.
Re-boot and see if it's picked up properly...if so do a few cold boots in a row and shut down.
Now introduce the CDRom as slave hooked to the middle connector.
Re-boot and see what happens...

If this produces no joy joy you may NEED to remove both drives temporarily and re-boot with the Promise floppy in and re-install the drivers.

Then simply repeat the above steps.

Solve : Printer Spooler?

Answer»

Alright so something really frustrating is going on.

Yesterday morning when I started up my computer, it wouldn't load and was stuck on "busy". I accidentally ended the process of spoolsv.exe, but knowing it would restart later I didn't worry about it.

Until I tried to print something later, it said I had no printer. I made sure my printer was plugged in and everything, my printer was not listed in Printers folder, then tried to go to Add Printer and it says: "Operation could not be completed. The printer spooler service is not RUNNING." I've had the same printer and it's worked great.

Ok, quick check of the processes again, I see that spoolsv.exe IS running.

I've tried, what I think to be everything, this is what I've tried:
1) Completely cleaning the computer of printer drives (via regedit too) and reinstalling/updating. Didn't work.
2) Copying and rewriting spoolsv.exe file from my Windows XP CD to my computer. Didn't work.
3) Going into Services and enabling Printer Spooler again (it's on Automatic). Didn't fix anything, however spoolsv.exe is now in my processes list.
4) Full Virus Scan, just incase. Didn't help.
5) System restore. Didn't work.

I'm running Windows XP Professional SP2 and I have a HP Photosmart C5180.

The printer is recognized through my USB, but fails to install the hardware needed and doesn't say why.

Thanks.try cleaning your resgistry using ccleaner, then install the driver again, restart.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this, but it doesn't work in safe mode either.

I'm pretty sure re-installing my printer software and drivers is not going to help the situation, as I've done it maybe 5 times now in different situations.have you try my suggestion?the "ccleaner"?

Yes that's why I quoted your post and said "Didn't work."

I know it's my computer, it's not the printer. How about a clean install of windows xp?I figured it out! The problem was that I had somehow managed to delete the spoolss.dll file.

I had a friend of MINE send me both their spoolss.dll and spoolsv.exe files to OVERWRITE mine and everything's fixed.

So to anyone else out there, make sure you have both those files, and make sure they're not corrupt.

Thanks guys.sfc /scannow would have replaced both of those automatically.

Note:Prices for both computers are the same. So don't worry about the price.
Anyways For the First one.
-Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
And The Other one is
-AMD Athlon X2 5600+
They both have 3 Gbs of RAM, 400Gb HD, Vista Home Premium. So yeah?well im pretty sure intel is the leading supplier of proccseors so i would go with this Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600...... ive never USED AMD , but intel has never strayed me wrong....... do i bit of research on the web im 100% that is better. What will we have over 5 years? a hexacore processor?
Where are they good for?
OK a dual core but they make sure you can do more things at the same time but a quad core does it do the same but just more?
Isn't that the purpose of RAM?
I get a little crazy because of those things.

Jonas lol u go crazy i dont really understand the point in high cpus because im USING a p 4 and its happy with me and im happy with it sure , the other chips give you more power ya ya ya but like i said the cpu 2 me ISNT a main point im happy with what ive got , but your being gready lmao , go by a comdor 64 and sell your computer and live in good grace... lmao I would definitely go with Intel Quad.lmao

Solve : lexmark z640 help?

I've BOUGHT one of these and tried to use it on a new Mesh computer that has Vista. I've connected it with a USB cable and the cartridges and paper are in place. However when i try to print a test page i get an error message saying there is a problem in communication between the computer and the printer.

Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance.wow you must be kidding. we got the same problem posted around the same time only the printers are different. Yeah i've read your post. Do you think it's a problem with Vista or the printer?yeah it has to be vista. it worked fine when I had windows 2000 and windows XP before and other people have problems with compatability with vista. Well that's annoying because on the printer box it has a sticker saying that it's compatible with Vista. I think i'll contact Microsoft and ask them.I was going to ask how old your printer is because I have an HP 825C printer that I know will not work with Vista because I searched on the HP website for drivers and it SAID this printer is discontinued. I see that you said the box shows it's Vista compatible THOUGH. Have you searched on Lexmark's website for updated drivers? Did this printer ever work with Vista? If it never did, maybe you need to wait and eventually Microsoft or Lexmark will make a driver for it. Either way, it's pretty CRAPPY that Vista doesn't work with a lot of hardware items. That's the way Microsoft is helping other companies make money by making the rest of us buy new hardware because the old isn't compatible.
Anyway, I hope you get your printing working one way or another! Thanks for your reply.

I've DOWNLOADED and installed a new driver from the Lexmark website and i've got the printer working now.

Solve : HELP Toshiba A65 Laptop Problem?

I installed the motherboard according to instructions on another site. But when I turn on the laptop, it seems to have power but the fan doesn't go on and there is no video on the screen. The hard drive light stays on (doesn't blink).

Did I SCREW up my new motherboard while I was installing it? Or is there a simpler explanation?

By the way, it's a Toshiba A65

EDIT: I just thought of something. Could it be a faulty AC ADAPTOR? (the adaptor box makes a high pitch squealing noise when plugged in). Could the AC Adaptor be giving insufficient power to the laptop?

Thanks for your HELP!

Apart from installing it what else did you do. Come on guys give clear explanations.

Solve : Ati AIW won't remember video resolution?

Answer»

I'm running Vista 32-bit, 512MB RAM, 2.66GHz.
Video Card is an ATI AIW Radeon 9600 2006 edition, 256 MB of memory.
I'm running a 32 inch Vizio HDTV.
I'm running in 1360x768, cause its the maximum it supports.

Anyway, the problem is, EVERYTIME I restart Vista, that resolution GOES back to 1024x768.
I have to OPEN Catalyst, and set it back to 1360x768. And the Picture doesn't allign properly, so I have to allign it in Cataylst, AND my TVs settings.

Alot of the time I'll run something, mainly a game or Video, and then the picture offsets, and doesn't line up with the TV. Then I have to go into Catalyst, and set it to any different resolution, and then back to 1360x768 to get it to reallign.

I've been using Vista since before it went retail, I've had this problem since then. Frankly, I'm tired of it, and the patches they've put out have done NOTHING for me. I still have no TV TUNER support, and I can live without that, I'd rather not, but, Owell. But this is just ridiculous. I hate updating Vista simply because I know I'll have to go through all that crap again, and possiblly again, after that.

I'm sorry if this has been brought up, its kind of hard to search for such specific issues. You're SURE you have the latest drivers for the ATI card, right?

Solve : Drive 0 is operating outside normal specs?

Answer»

Forgive me, I'm not terribly computer savvy.

Recently my computer crashed, it wouldn't let me get to the desktop. So i decided to reinstall windows, hoping it would fix the issue.

To my dismay, I now RECEIVE an error message saying something along the lines of "Windows detected an error on the primary IDE drive, drive 0 is functioning outside of normal specifications"

Can anyone give me a clue as to what is wrong? Or how to fix it?

Thanks for your timemore details regarding the make model of the computer would help us diagnose a bit better?
what make model of the hard drive?
what make model of the motherboard?
what BIOS version is on the motherboard and when was it last UPDATED?

using the details you have given us
the message is a severe warning of disc failure, you really require a new drive as soon as possible.

or it could be also a loose or damaged IDE cable,

or the drive could be set as Master but the BIOS is set at cable select, and you have connected the drive to the MIDDLE connection which should be for the slave drive,

or LBA is not set in the BIOS,

the drive could have an image layer product on it which has been destroyed by the format you have done which has created a drive size which the BIOS cannot read or write to, the BIOS might have to be updated to enable it to use a larger drive than it has on the IDE controller

Some larger harddrives were imaged with a overlay which enabled it to be used by OLDER BIOS.
there is a diagnostic tool from here:-
http://support.wdc.com/download/windlg/windlg10.exe
Like I said, I'm amateur at best when it comes to computers. Consequently, I don't have or know how to get that information.

If it's of any use, I'm working on a standard dell dimension 4550.

I would like to explore the possibility of this being a piece of damaged hardware, or a loose cable. What does this piece of hardware look like? Where in the computer might I find it?

Her BIOS ((v:)A08)won't accept the DVD-reader (Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C24O2) I got this from a old Toshiba tecra 8100.
He works fine once he is past the BIOS.
How can I make sure that the BIOS won't block this when she boots?

Thanks in advance,

Jonas I tried updating the BIOS to A11.
No luck
What else can I do?

Jonas Hello Jonas,I did some research and the 510m is only interchangeable with
the following models. See Below.

Inspiron Models: 300M, 500M ,510M, 600M, 8500, 8600.
Latitude Models: X200, X300, D400, D500, D505, D600, D800

Check the below site. The site LOADS slow.

http://www.portablecomponentsforall.com/So you can't change the BIOS?
Because it works fine if you puy it in after the BIOS is loaded.

Jonas Jonas,According to Dell if it is compatible, you only need BIOS A08
A11 is not listed for the 510M model.

Systems: Dell Inspiron 500m Series
Version: A08
Build Date: 07/14/2004

The following updates were made to the A07 BIOS to create the A08 BIOS:

Issues Fixed:
1. Fixed issues where the system fails to boot to certain USB
storage devices or any USB storage when several such devices
are attached to the system.

2. Fixed issue seen after several Standby/Resume cycles in which an
external USB keyboard can no longer be used to enter a BIOS or
hard-disk drive password.

3. Fixed system hang seen when resuming from Standby if the user
notifies the operating system to eject an optical drive before
entering Standby, but the drive is never removed.

4. Fixed issue in which media bay devices may be reported incorrectly
in SMBIOS if the device is swapped while in Standby.

5. Fixed issue in which no audio is received from the analog audio
channel of a DVD-RW drive in the media bay.

6. Fixed possible system hang during POST when the Parallel Mode in
System Setup is configured to DISABLE.

7. Fixed problem where a reboot is required for a System Setup boot
order change to take effect. Now, if is pressed during POST
to enter System Setup, and a boot order change is made, the new
boot order will take effect upon exiting System Setup.

8. Fixed issue in which QuickSet may intermittently fail to detect
a HOTKEY press, such as the CD Eject hotkey.

9. Update to Pre-boot System Assessment to build 3012. This version
addresses problems when executing the hard-disk drive tests
without AC power attached.

Enhancements:
1. Added support for informed hot-undocking. The undock METHOD can
be configured as either "Hot Undock" or "Warm Undock" using the
new "Undocking Method" field on page 5 of System Setup. The
system must be rebooted after changing this field.
Previously, the system WOULD only allow warm-undocking. When
warm-undocking, the system enters Standby mode if the dock eject
button is pressed or the user commands the Operating System to
undock the computer from the Start Menu.
The new default behavior is Hot Undock. This allows the system
to stay powered on when undocking.
PLEASE NOTE: Regardless of how "Undocking Method" is configured,
the user must notify the system before undocking by either pressing
the dock eject button or commanding the OS to undock the computer
from the Start Menu.

2. Added support for DVD+/-RW drives to be displayed in System Setup
and SMBIOS correctly.

3. Added support for newer versions of the Intel Pentium M processor.

4. Added feature to allow the BIOS Admin password to unlock the
primary hard-disk drive password. For this feature to work, the
BIOS Admin password must be installed at the time the drive
password is created. Also, the BIOS Admin password will only
unlock the password for a drive that is installed in the specific
system on which the drive password is originally created.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/bios/500M_A08.TXTI already updated to A11 and I had no problems with updating sow why preform a rollback? (If it is needed how can I do it?)
It wasn't working in A08 either.
It isn't compatible with the BIOS but it works so...
I'm afraid I'm creating more damage than before

Jonas
Jonas,For the Dell inspiratiom 510M...I am still
thinking the dvd-Rom is not compatible but,
you can read the below.

There is a firmware update for the SD-C2402.

You may want to read the site first. See Below.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=199The driver is installed and yesterday see even played SIM (or SIM2 if that exists)
It works so it has to be compatible maybe not with the BIOS but when it works it means it is compatible, no?
Or isn't firmware the same as driver?
Thanks for helping me

Jonas Jonas,

Firmware is software that is embedded in a hardware device. So, laptop companys are notorious for making their parts and BIOS match up with
each other,or not work properly. So, a firmware update may not help at all.

Because it fits properly does not mean the BIOS will be happy with
it.

Desktop computers were made much more compatible for interchanging parts.

Robert
In the beginning it didn't fitted at all but after changing some parts it did fitted.
But now it fits but that is not the only thing it can even play music, Games, ...
But it looks like I can't change the BIOS so I'll tell her she just has to get out the DVD drive and put it in after the BIOS is loaded.

Sounds like you have it figured out Jonas. If it works that way,it will be fine.
No different than removing a floppy disk before you can boot.

Solve : PC sometimes boots up - if not "no signal displayed" on monitor?

Answer»

hi everyone
please can you help me. my pc (P4 3.4 ghz) sometimes boots up and sometimes doesnt. i have checked all power cables ie to the hard drive and they are, as far as i can TELL are 100% working.however even though the HD is getting warm under NEATH the lights on my box front panel do not light up (red and green light) when it doesnt boot up and when it does boot up the lights come on and hard drive is warm and pc operates just fine. sometimes it boots sometimes it doesnt - when it doesnt i get the "no signal" on my monitor and the no lights on the front box
what could the problem be?
the HD is fairly new and is not connecting through IDE cables. there is a red cable to the motherboard and a power cable.
i just give up.
could it be my graphics card?
any help would be much appreciated
thanksHow many HD do you have connected?
It could be the power that is not getting into the HD or the mainboard is not powered on. Make sure that your HD is well connected to the power cable.

More info needed. You have a SATA HDD. Is this the drive your OS is installed to ? ?
Are there any error messages at all on startup besides the "no signal" one ? ?
How long has it been like this ? ?
What happened prior to this ? ?

Even though that was a pretty long paragraph there you haven't given us much to go on...Any time ou get "no signal" on your screen, your monitor is not receiving anything from your video card. If your hard drive is spinning and you get all the wonderful sounds as if you were actualy booting up, minus the visual, your video is somehow not working.

Check the calbe going from the video card to the monitor, make sure it's on nice and tight. *censored*, even try reseating it. If that doesn't work, try reseating the video card itself. While you have it out, clean it out with some air duster. (note, anytime you add/remove parts inside the COMPUTER, unplug it from power)

See if any of that helps and report back.hi guys
thanks for the speedy response.
just to give more info on this one
i only have one HDD on which XP pro is loaded
my graphics card is a NVIDIA 256 mb
i have since removed the graphics card and unplugged the monitor cable completely and the same thing is happening with no change! no lights on my front panel display - just my DVD ROM that lights up but thats about it
again the hard drive is warm underneath if that counts for anything
im close to throwing the pc out the window at this stage
its only 6 months old and this has been happening now for 3 of those 6 months
what else could it be? power supply problem? the MB has the green permanent light on and the fan on the actual PCU spins so its getting power there
i just give up
thanks guys for your helpHi

Thanks for info we needed it so much to figure out your Bull problem.

Three things could be demaged.
1. Your RAM has a huge effect on the display.
2. Your HD its warming up but the boot sector is corrupt.
3. Your processor the least but could be

Do a feasibility study and take out the RAM and plug it back or use your friends RAM make sure that every thing is working.

As aligned 1.2.3 try them out.

I have a big distbin at my house i can bring it then you put your PC in it then i'm off.
Throughing it out of the window its not safe Microsoft my sue you for that. hi guys
this will be my last post i promise
thanks for all your responses
so i have unplugged everything from printer to speakers
even my dvd rom has been unplugged
even the monitor and graphics card
and we have the same story
sometimes i have a green power light and the drive reads and boots
other times its DEAD..nothing..nudda!!
but the fan spins and power is on all the time regardless - sometimes getting the permanent green power light and some hard drive action - other times nothing
i checked the RAM which seems fine
not sure where the boot sector in BIOS is though
but when the machine boots its perfect - no problems
i have even swopped the SATA cable and changed power connectors
i can heard the drive spinning though which is a good thing
the only other thing that i can conclude is that my pwer supply is faulty???
if its not then time for a new hard drive i reckon
penny for your thoughts?Well it can be 3 things...
1) The HDD itself. The only way to test this is to swap it into another machine and run it for a few days to see if it acts up.
Problem with this you would have to wipe your info and re-install XP on it in the other machine for a full test. It will not run simply by swapping it.
2) The SATA controller on the MBoard is flakey.
Only way to test this would be swapping in a different SATA drive again doing as stated above.
3) The PSU. This is the easiest test. Borrow a known good one of equal or greater wattage and swap it in there for a few days...if the problem stops buy a new PSU.

P.S. Does your board have more than one SATA connector and have you tried the other one ? ?
P.S.S. If it is the PSU don't buy a cheap one for a replacement.

Solve : hand-held scanner will not work?

Answer»

Hi there, I have a hand held scanner (Symbol P460) that I am trying to get to WORK. My computer runs Microsoft XP. I can upload numerical INFORMATION to my notepad program. However when I try to hook up to my software, which is CAM Commerce: Gift Registry, it does not upload the information. Instead what it does is change the bit rate for which the computer is SET...it jumps around from 400 to 9600 and is supposed to stay 9600. I have heard things about serial data and other data...am I running into an issue with the type of data that I am trying to upload? I am scanning a few barcodes on various products. I have been working on this issue for over a year and I have talked to the COMPANY that makes the scanner and I have talked to the company that makes the software there are no answers!!! I am so frustrated. Please help me. is this the correct model and does the description seem to be accurate ?

http://www.racoindustries.com/syp460.htm

1. is downloading the data into Windows- "notepad" the default or implied location with the software instructions for this unit?

2. CAM Commerce: Gift Registry << is this software recommended or approved with this particular model and did you have any issues with this software when you installed it on the computer ?

Solve : creating a MS-batch file for adding a printer?

Answer»

I am having PROBLEMS with a printer that is networked.
3 COMPUTERS share this one printer but every single morning I have to re-add it back into the two that are networked to it.

The one attached is fine but the ones that are sharing it cannot seem to hold onto it.

The computers are shut down at night and the next day it just has completely vanished and has to be re-aded through the wizard. I think that if we have a logon batch file to re-add it then it would just re-attach WITHOUT having to manually add it.

Does anyone know how to create a MS-batch file?

If anyone else has other suggestions, anything would be MUCH appreciated!

Solve : Is my problem a failed motherboard??

Answer»

My computer will not boot, fan runs, dvd-room flashes and it sounds like the hardrive is spinning but that's as far as it goes. A problem started about a week ago when it would not restart using the windows OPTION to reboot, it would only reboot after I shut the power switch on my UPS off. I would then turn the switch back on, PRESS the on switch for the computer and it would start. There also is not beep from the bios. I have tried all the suggestions on the forum that I thought might fit my SITUATION, none of them have helped. Is this a motherboard problem?

Gateway GT5056, AMD 64 x2 Processor 3800+ WindowsXP SP2

Hard Drives
101030 - Western Digital 250-GB 7200-RPM Hard Drive
Memory

Motherboards
105552 - Foxconn C51GU01 Motherboard
Optical Drives
DVD/CD writer
Power Supplies
100889 - 300-Watt Power Supply

Thanks for any help that you can provide me with,
NotSmartEnough
Try going right into the wall outlet bypassing the UPS.

If that doesn't work then it could be a power supply or motherboard problem...to begin with

Alan <>< Thanks, I'll give it a try and hope it is something as simple as the power supply.

NotSmartEnough what brand UPS are you using and did you install any software included ?
How long have you been using that ups ?I can tell you hear and now if its your motherboard ....... when it boots does it turn off straight away after it has read all that hardware.....if it does your motherboard is fryed and you 100% need a new ONE.....also heres another way to tell ... look for any other error messages when your booting if your on a count down for a shutdown again its your mobo....motherboards aint too pricey...but im sure we can help you find a good one , if it is infact your motherboard i am looking at the worse case scenario here so you DONT fry any compents....I don't think there is enough info to conclude it is in fact the MBoard...

Solve : CD/DVD Burner Issues?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have a computer I built myself with dual Philips DVD burners. I have burned many CD's before but lately I've had error messages. I cannot get anything to burn. Both drives read perfectly. I have tried burning at the LOWEST possible speeds, reinstalling the drives, checking to make sure burning is enabled. I have plenty of ram and harddrive space as well.

I have not yet had the chance to swap out one of my drives with another computer to see if that is the problem, but since both drives are having the same problem I doubt it is the drives themselves. I have a suspicion that it is a power problem. I printed an error report which I pasted below. I am not good with reading these but it seems to be a power insuficiency. It states there is a power calibration error. I just copied the last section with the errors. I can attach the entire report in pieces if needed.

Thanks GUYS,

MattWhat is the make, wattage and age of the PSU in that machine ? ?
Could very well be the culprit.

Although not impossible i wouldn't think both drives would fail at the same time. Your method of trying them in another working machine is the only way to find out though.

I also noticed you have INCD...do you use this often ? ? The software itself has been known to cause issues...

Solve : batch file?

Answer»

how create batch file in xp?PLZ give an ideaHere is an idea.
Go to START --> Run
At run, type notepad.exe and press Enter.
Now a text editor will come up.
Type:

@echo off
echo.
echo. Hello
echo.
pause

Now go to File --> Save As --> On Desktop, save it as file.bat

Now open that batch file and you should see a black box with the words 'hello' and 'press any key to continue. . ."

That is a very simple batch file.

It really depends what you want the batch file to do.here is a useless batch file that you can play with. Just play around with the code if you want but i made it. and when you want to try it save it as pp2.2.bat.

Heres the link to the text file:

Solve : Help How to Optimize IRQs sharing??

Answer»

Good day,

I just want to know how can I optimize my IRQs sharing?

here are the lists:

00 system timer
01 keyboard
02 programmable interrupt controller
03 com2
04 com1
05 ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
05 LAN card
06 FLOPPY disk controller
07 LPT1
08 system CMOS real time clock
09 SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus
10 MPU-401
11 ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
11 ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
11 ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering
11 AC97 audio controller
11 PCI to usb host controller
11 PCI to usb host controller
11 Nvidia video card
12 mouse port
13 numeric data processor
14 VIA bus master PCI IDE controller
14 Primary IDE controller
15 VIA bus master PCI IDE controller
15 Secondary IDE controller

As you can see, there are IRQ that shares with many devices and I want to optimize them .

My motherboard is ECS k7AMA2

Please help me on this one.

Thank you!the IRQ holder table and IRQ/PCI steering is a bit of a legacy from older DOS system ideology, there were originally 8 now there are 15 but some that are fixed and two that cannot be changed at all as they dont really exist in reality as they are jump paths to the added 8 which in reality shows as 7 less 2 there are only 13 but then 5 of them cannot change.
it has been a constant since Windows XP and PnP CAME out to leave well alone and let the operating system and the BIOS swap out the addresses if and when required, and when devices were in use or not, added to or removed from the motherboard / bios
it was falling apart until USB and Firewire devices saved the BACON and almost done away with it altogether, SATA is another nail in its coffin and about time to.
a rough but very good guide can be found here:-
http://www.aesystems.com/irq_map.html
and here:-
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/intshare.html

IT IS BETTER LEFT WELL ALONELet Windows handle the IRQ's. Don't fuss with it unless you know what you're doing.
If you want an "adventure", then play around
