Solve : Trouble connecting with Telnet?

Answer»

Hello everyone... hope all are enjoying the holiday season!

I'm running win7 on my laptop and trying to connect using telnet to the virtual machine on my laptop.  The OS on the virtual machine is XP pro.  Any ideas why this is not happening??  I'm unable to ping either machine from either machine as the request times out.  Any suggestions.

Thanks !

B2  Forgot to say they both have different IP addresses lol; I have the telnet SERVICE started on both my machines as well in case you are wondering.

Thanks,
B2 Also I forgot to mention that both of them are on DHCP and not static.

Thanks,
B2 :0Could you enter the command "route print" at a command prompt and COPY and paste the results here?Hey Rob,

B2 Sorry - I'm still looking for the ROUTING table from the host.  I can see the VM's table and the host's IP6 table only.

I see that you're using a cable modem, so the IP address is actually your WAN address - incorrect assumption on my part.  Feel free to remove it from your posts above, although I still don't consider it to be a particular security risk.  Every script kiddie on the planet already has your IP address.  By the way - is the firewall on the VM allowing incoming telnet (port 23)?No I'm having a problem with that.  I'm getting the following message...

Could not open connection to the host, on port 23
: Connect failed

B2 So try disabling the firewall on the XP VM.  Does that make a difference?

Solve : Network talking one direction only?

Answer»

I have three computers on my network.  Two desktops and one laptop.  All are USING XP.  My main computer is a Dell.  The Toshiba laptop and the IBM desktop can both see the Dell on the network.  The Dell doesn't see anybody, and the laptop and IBM can't see each other.  Any suggestions?Start over. Really. Run network wizard on each computer over again. Be sure and select home network, Turn on file sharing. The the same work GROUP name on each computer, and each computer MUST have its own  name. Of course, you have to reset the computers. It may take XP three or four minuets to find other computers on the local network. Normal for XP.
Thanks.   I'll give that a TRY.

Solve : New hook up to a wireless router?

Answer»

I've been on a DSL connection with my local ISP, Pioneer Internet for several years. I purchased a wireless router so that my daughter can access the internet from her lap top and also to connect my blue ray dvd player to things like net flick. My problem is that when i connect my desk top to the new router it won't let me connect to the internet, The manual acts like this is a given and only instructs about hooking up the wifi connection to the other wireless devices.
What do I need to do?

I have a HP desktop w/ VISTA. The router is a ZyXel NBG-419N

Please help

Thanks in advance
TimThe best way is to prevalence the old DSL modem with new modem with router and wireless all in one package.
Otherwise, it requires some work to find an combination of settings that SATISFY both the modem and the router.

General rules:
1. Only the Modem does DHCP. Router has it disabled..
2. The router and modem must be in the same address range.
3. Router and modem can not have same exact dress.

Often you have to set the routers address to a different one inside the range. You need to know the dress range the modem allows. Typically the range would be from
192.168.1.2  to 192.168.1.50
But that may not be the case. You need to get your provider to help you or provide the information.

As one that has always used an ISP provided DSL modem and a personally owned router connected to it (which has the CAPABILITIES of both wireless and wired) i see no difficulties for you (other than initial setup) to use the combination you have, I see no need/reason to obtain more/different hardware. It may be that the tech support at your ISP will assist you though i doubt it. There is no problem with the modem the issue is with your new router. So it has been my experience that provided that you FOLLOWED the installation process correctly for the router and your not getting the desired result i would strongly urge you to contact (preferably by phone) the manufacturer of the router. They will take you step by step through the process and will be glad to do so. In some instances some of them can ask you to give over access to your computer for the period of the "fix" and you will be able to just SIT back and watch them do it.It is not uncommon to have a problem with configuration of routers initially. By the way your daughter's laptop probably has a built in wi-fi connection but your desktop probably does not. Do you have a wireles dongle connected to a usb port on the desktop? Without it you will never receive a wireless connection.truenorth
P.S. Tech support may also be needed for the dongle (and/or).Thanks as always to all.
Problem solved. Believe it or not, Pioneer's tech support helped me through it. My internet lan settings were the problem.
Thanks
Tim

Solve : Wireless Signal Is Good But No Connection Further Than 5 Meters?

Answer»

Hello, i have this problem with with HTC Desire S smartphone currently. When i am in my room, connection is fine, but when in another room further than 5 meters, i lose connection, though i have good Wi-Fi signal.

The interesting part is that when i turn or rotate my smartphone or change place, eventually connection returns. This is weird because i have no range limit in my Edimax's ROUTER BIOS. Router has one antenna FYI which i tried rotating differently to no avail. Drivers are latest and router is old.

Router: Edimax BR-6204Wg
Mobile OS: ANDROID 2.3.3

Thanks. Quote

Without special equipment, it is had to say if that is normal or not. You can try to change your system to another channel.  Or try another smartphone. The antenna may be defective.Okay i will add. This did not happen until i bought Case Mate Tough and does not happen when case is off. Quote from: Boris_yo on January 21, 2012, 10:13:49 AM

Please elaborate. It is a rubber case for the phone? Here are detailsThat heavy-duty case is designed for protection against hard falls... and it looks rather thick:

The antenna probably was not designed to be able to penetrate through cases....  I don't think you'd be able to do much if you really want to use that case...This comes to mind...
iPhone 4 Loses Reception When You Hold It By The Antenna Band? The problem is that NOT EVERY DEVICE experiences such symptoms. I read somewhere that HTC should remake in smartphone's firmware how wireless antenna operates with case on. This problem has been encountered with Case Mate Barely There metallic case.Steve Jobs was an excellent engineer. And he missed it. Microwave antenna are subject to not only metallic decoupling, but also dielectric effects. A dielectric effect is how a non-metallic material can decouple a microwave antenna. The fact that it can be adjusted in firmware is outstanding. Those chips must be really amazing to have that kind of capability. I am willing to believe it. I have no idea who makes the wireless MODULE. Brut I am sure it is is programmable. Weather or not it can alter the antenna tuning, I don't know.  But it is possible using some techniques that are 21 century stuff. I have never heard of that at microwave frequencies. But it has been a long time since I studies that stuff. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 22, 2012, 08:38:17 AM

Case turns my smartphone from omnidirectional to directional. How would you call that downgrade in TECHNOLOGY? Reversed technology which is antonym for advanced technology.

Case is great and does a well job, but that wireless issue... Have to take cover off to surf fine. Quote from: Boris_yo on January 22, 2012, 09:23:05 AM

Do you take your car out of the garage when you want to drive?

Many cell phone systems are in the mid range band around 900 MHz and have power levels the go for miles. But WI-Fi technology is at 2.5 GHz and higher and has short range coverage under 100 meters. The case makers test the things on cell phone coverage, not Wi-Fi coverage.

Maybe i should find where the most crucial part of the device is which is responsible for Wi-Fi reception and make a hole in smartphone's case?
Or rather than modifying the case to permit sufficient wi=fi signal reception. Which could entail substantial elimination of the case. Another alternative (if the security aspect of the case protection is paramount) modify the case to allow connection of an external ANTENNAE. A much less invasive (destructive) process. I use an external antennae on a laptop. Not for your issue but to enhance the reception ability. It has demonstrated well it's ability to do that. However as a caution it too is very sensitive to directional pointing to achieve maximum signal strength. truenorth

Solve : Wireless IP Problem ??

Answer»

Hello

Having trouble with my internet connection, running Windows 7.

It goes slow sometimes or loses connection, I did a Diagnostics and got the following:

Not sure if this is a conflict but I use 2 Different wireless connections, mine and my brothers.

Lock your wireless connection to only one wifi network. Click on one and choose disconnect. To check on network profile,
1. Open Network and Sharing Center and Click on Manage Wireless Network.
2. Check on both wireless connection's SSID you were using (Ex. WIfi A and Wifi B).
3. If you currently use Wifi A, right-click Wifi B and choose Properties.
4.On Connection tab unchecked all box and hit Ok.
5. Another way is managing wireless networks - http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/27067/change-wireless-network-priority-to-make-windows-7-choose-the-right-network-first/Hello jason2074,

Networks I use are, Gasca and 2WIRE544

For example if I want " Gasca " as my first network to connect, I checked on auto connect. So here is Wireless Network Properties and Wireless Status.

Not sure if these are the correct security settings?

I cannot download anything at all, it downloads for a couple minutes then freezes and can't really download anything, whats the problem? my browser? or IP conflict ?

Here's a screen shot.

Its on " Home " and I unchecked all the sharing options because I don't need it. I would like to use WEP for now. My question will be which do you recommend, for " Security type " No Authentication (Open) Or  Shared ?

And...

Checked or Unchecked? for this setting.

There's no such thing as as secure WEP. You might as well use no encryption if you live in a city.

The problem is not in the settings menu you have shown. You need to check your router's DHCP settings.2Wire DSL modem/router is PPoE.  Looks like you're connected at 802.11b.  Turn security off until you get it running.Alright thanks guys for the help..

Solve : Wireless modem router - trouble with ethernet connection between modem and compu?

Answer»

I have recently had to replace my wirelss modem, due to an electrical storm. The trouble is now the new modem won't recognise that there is an ethernet connection between my computer and the new  wireless modem/router. The cable is physically connected to the modem but the port light is not on. There is nothing wrong with cable as I have PLUGGED in my old non-wireless modem via this cable and it has worked (I am connected to the internet now using this cable and old modem).
I gave tried everything from system restore to a date pre-electrical storm, updating drivers, resetting and manually reconfigering the modem. On a couple of OCCASIONS I have been able to get a signal (the port light is on and I can connect to the internet) only to return to my computer and find that the port light has gone off and there is no longer a connection. I thought that maybe the modem was not compatible with my computer for some reason and so changed the brand (Netgear to D-Link) still no joy. HELP!!!! Quote

You have a modem from your internet PROVIDER which can be used for wired and wireless connection?  Now you have ordered a replacement... which is not working or turning on? If your modem was DAMAGED due to lightning and now the NIC isn't POWERING on, then there's a good chance it was damaged as well.

Try another NIC.

Solve : dial-up confusion?

Answer»

For a variety of reasons, my only internet access right now is dial-up. My fairly new computer only has an ethernet outlet, not a regular phone line outlet. Does someone sell some type of adapter I can purchase to be able to use dial-up internet service through the phone line? You'll need a PCI or external modem. No computers nor laptops come with those any more.

I think you could still buy one in certain stores but your best bet is probably second hand. However, you'll need to GET one that is supported by your operating system so don't buy the oldest you can find ...

Unless your provider gave you very detailed instructions, setting these THINGS up is best left to someone with knowledge about dial-up. Quote from: Raptor on January 12, 2012, 09:36:20 AM

My company still uses analogue comms extensively.  We've found that about the easiest devices to use and get hold of are US Robotics' 56k USB modems.  The slightly disconcerting part for grizzled engineers like me is that they don't have the piezo speaker built in, so you can't listen to the modem chatter.  It's surprising how much we use our ears for diagnosis! Here's one option from Newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825134008

If you know many people with BROADBAND connections, you might see if any of them want to sell (or give away) their internal dial up modems.  If you have local computer stores you might check with them, they probably have stacks of internal dial up modems they don't know what to do with.

Solve : Dsl now connects like dial up?

Answer»

A while back a friend of our's was messing around with internet connection. So after that we now have to connect to the internet like dial up. Usually this happens only when we unplug and plug back in the modem. So any idea how it would be possible to get rid of dial up like connection with DSL? Basically just want the normal DSL connection not where you have to type your hardware and password to connect to the internet.
All ideas are welcome, I will TRY to figure it out on my own if no one knows and will post a solution.
THANKS in advanced.I think you should upload a screenshot of the login page.I regret to SAY that i find your post hard to follow.
Particularly with this statement "now have to connect to the internet like dial up.'. What do you mean "like dial up"? You have DSL (modem/router) but you feel due to some "messing around" by your friend you have lost your DSL connection and can now only connect via a dial up modem--is that it?truenorth Quote from: truenorth on February 01, 2012, 03:08:39 PM

Code: [Select]have to type your hardware and password to connect to the internet. This is where I meant username and password. It is not that I get speeds of Dial up, I just have to input now username and password in order to re-connect to the internet and have all the connection windows popping out during the progress. If this is a home network, see this link on how to connect automatically on your wireless network.Ok so i believe i understand your issue now. You are currently required to provide a password to connect to your dsl service and previous to the friends intervention you weren't . You would like to go back to no password required. You do not mention the brand of the router. However i am including a link to what is required to achieve your objective if a LINKSYS router is involved. The process is usually the same for most routers. If yours is something else using your PREFERRED search tool look up the process specific to your router.

Also, please don't use that type of highlight in your text - it's very difficult to read. Thank you.Probably also your default gateway. The IP ADDRESS you must be pertaining are the local IP address from the network device such as modems or routers. These address are specific to accessing your router by a web browser to CHANGE SETTINGS or configuration.

Solve : Limited acess!!?

Answer»

Hi, having a problem on my desktop computer, i'm suddenly not getting a wi-fi connection, i've got limited access only or in other words, nothing!

The router is fine no problem connecting my laptop or phone. Windows Network Diagnostics tells me "There might be a problem with the network driver for the wireless network sonnection adapter. Windows couldn't automatically bind the IP protocol stack to the network adapter", whatever that means!

It usually connects with no problems via a D-link wireless dongle, when i go into my control panel it tells me my device is working fine and it's little light is lit up so at the moment i'm stumped, i'd appreciate any help!
I don't want to sound presumptuous, but have you tried simply switching the router and PC off for 3-4 minutes ??  Then switch your router back on first, wait till it starts up and configures, then turn on your PC.Yes i tried that, several times! Tried updating the driver or reinstalling it? I haven't tried re-installing it but the software is up to date. What security software do you have installed?RIGHT now none, i've just recently updated avg security on it, i did wonder if the firewall was causing a problem so uninstalled itIs the interface set to obtaining IP addresses automatically?I don't know, thats a bit to technical a question for me!It might be a hardware problem with the wireless adapter. I would try reinstalling the CD driver software for the adapter to see any improvement. QUOTE from: richie m on January 29, 2012, 04:37:33 AM

I don't know, thats a bit to technical a question for me!

Right click network adapter, properties and then TCP/IP settings.

Have you had Kaspersky installed at any point?Never had kapersky installed, Ive actually just solved it by doing a system restore, restoring to a point before avg and mozilla were updated yesterday, although they might not be related to my problem.  That was the second attempt at a system resore the first one failed, i'll re-install avg and hopefully have no more problems, thanks for all your suggestions.Let us know if it comes back ...

You should give Microsoft security ESSENTIALS a shot. Had better results with it than with AVG Free.I'll let you know if it does, i'm not using the free verson of avg, so having recently paid for it i'd prefer to use it!

Solve : Icon indicates I'm not connected, but I can still browse??

Answer»

The computer I am now currently on was just recently fixed. There was a hardware problem, but I ASSUME they corrected it. I'm not sure if that has something to do with the connection problems I'm having at this moment, but it might. I figured it's relevant.

Anyway, I TRY to connect to my wireless connection, and in doing so, it will say it's connected, but the icon at the lower right corner shows the small x. I can browse for a few minutes, but after it won't let me for a few minutes. Usually I backup a few pages, and then it works. I had to turn off my proxy settings and the firewall for the internet to even work on FireFox and Google Chrome. IE still won't work.

I'm not sure if it's a ROUTER problem, or the actual laptop itself. I can connect perfectly fine on my Iphone and other DEVICES (Wi, Xbox 360,..). I just don't know.

 Help would be greatly APPRECIATED!

I'm using Windows Xp
Inspiron 8600
AVG is installed, along with Ccleaner and Malware/Spyware detectors. Can you confirm that your wired connection works flawlessly on all browsers? The red X might point a disconnection from wireless network.  I don't see any relevance of using proxy settings for a home network setup.Yes, on my desktop which is connected through the modem works fine. It's just the laptops wireless connection that acts strange. It will say its not connected, but I can still get on the Internet. It will then say that it's lost the connection. Check first if you have a secured wifi network. Try changing your router/modem channel and check for any wireless interference on your room or location.

Solve : VPN Setup failed?

Answer»

Hello,

Despite great efforts, I simply cannot get a VPN setup on my network. While I am not what you would consider a novice, I am when it comes to networking.

I currently have a router running dd-wrt, with a native OpenVPN server/daemon built in.

I have followed this guided (or atleast struggled through it when it came to the networking bit) using OpenVPN v 2.1.4 : http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/VPN_(the_easy_way)_v24%2B

When I try to connect, I receive an error in OpenVPN client stating "Connecting to Client has Failed." When I try to view that log file, there isn't one, but this is in the console WINDOW that pops up after I hit connect:

Firewall Commands:
Code: [Select]iptables -I INPUT 1 -p udp --dport 1194 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD 1 --SOURCE 192.168.2.0/24 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD -i br0 -o tun0 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I FORWARD -i tun0 -o br0 -j ACCEPT

It may be possible that I messed up generating the keys.. but I was pretty careful to follow the guide.

If anyone so inclined would mind giving me a hand, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Certech

P.S. There is also no log on the server either..update:

Does that help?POSSIBLY; I scrapped what I was doing and started over with a new guide that was more up to date.

I still cannot connect; although it seems Im closer this time.

Solve : Birth year on Facebook keeps changing?!?

Answer»

A friend of mine has been having a problem on Facebook LATELY.  She doesn't show her birth year on her profile page, but in the last few weeks there have been two instances where not only has a year suddenly appeared on her profile next to her birth month and day, but it's the wrong year.  Anyone have any ideas as to why or how this COULD happen?Someone must have access to the said account. Try changing the password to a DIFFERENT STRONGER one. You can edit the profile and BIRTHDAY on what to show either by month and day only.

Solve : Download and streaming doesn't work?

Answer»

Hi I believe that this problem belongs in network and internet. If I download SOMETHING it will stop before it has finished and also when I stream a video(youtube) it will stop during the first couple of seconds and won't start up again. I have scanned for virus and malware and have found nothing. I also cleaned out my temp and cookies. My network is always good, I have wireless by the way. I have restored my SYSTEM and it has work but if I restart or turn off my computer it happens again. I have done some connection tests. All start really high then quickly decline all the way to zero. I don't know much about my computer. I have upgraded my graphics card to a gtx 560 but this problem has been happening before that. If you could help me.What virus scanner?McAfee and for malware I have malwarebytesI trust neither. Since the problem disappears and then comes back when you roll back I think you need to do a more thorough examination of Windows. Get Microsoft Security Essentials and do a FULL scan. Disable the other scanners or uninstall them, but don't let them run together.
I disabled my FIREWALL and the probelm is FIXED but now I don't want to run the internet without it. So what do you think my firewall is blocking. Is it the firewall that came with McAfee? All I know is that it has a habit of breaking networks. You should go over the logbook and see what it is blocking and why.

You might also want to consider switching to ZoneAlarm. If your OS is Windows 7, the Windows firewall is not a bad choice.  Otherwise, I'd try Comodo Firewall for Windows.  You should enable either one from your McAfee or Windows firewall. Do you see any settings or features from your current antivirus?I fixed it, I just pushed the restore  defaults on the firewall page and restarted my computer and now everythings working. Thanks for the help. Quote from: thecommon on January 18, 2012, 09:17:09 AM

The McAfee firewall?  If so, then Windows firewall is disabled, right?

Solve : XP & 7 network problem.?

Answer»

I have upgraded my study computer to an Intel Extreme motherboard and i7 processor, WINDOWS 7 Pro OS, with all the new other little bits necessary.
This is connected to the lounge computer running XP Pro over the network.
The Windows 7 computer can see the XP computer and the C: drive, but the XP computer cannot see the Windows 7 computer, or any of the 11 drives.
All the drives on the two computers are shared.
Before the upgrade, the the study computer was running XP pro with no network problems in either direction.
I have renamed the study computer and changed the network path on the lounge computer.
I have now run out of ideas.Have you checked if Network DISCOVERY and file/printer sharing is enabled in Windows 7?
Hi there Joy. yes, they are both enabled.Did you put them both in the same work group?Try disabling both FIREWALLS.  Does this resolve it?  If so, the firewalls need to be configured to allow file/printer sharing. Quote from: RAPTOR on JANUARY 08, 2012, 05:47:44 PM

Did you put them both in the same work group?
Yes I didThe McAfee anti virus on the XP computer had hiccupped and when reset all is now ok, thanks guys.Ah, McAfee. Breaker of networks.

Solve : Slower page loading since internet off for 3 days?

Answer»

Hi to everyone
A while ago my connection went off for a few days and when I phoned Virgin, they said that they were doing maintenance work.(Was not long after the IP4 address running out completely).
After it went back on,my page load times at least doubled, quadroupled on some sites.I'm pretty familiar with tweaking my connection,so I tried different RWINS,TTL's etc. to no effect, anything but my current config either made it stay the same or made worse.
The ping is really good on speedtests(12 - 32) but the advertised speed does get up to it, but takes ages to get there, when I download normal files 5 - 30 meg,it rarely gets past half speed.
I phoned Virgin again, they basically said there was nothing wrong it must be my end(Grrr)and started going thru all obvious stuff I'd done loads of times(I'm sure u know what i mean, with their checklist);they assured me I was not sharing an IP(My ip did change)and everything is still the same.I even upgraded to 30Mb instead of 10 and pages still take same AMOUNT of time to load as when I was on the lower rate.I got a wireless router with it (Netgear g480)
I have Windows 7(which I've re-installed since it happened)x86,use firefox and chrome and eset smart security at the mo(this has changed since it happened aswell)
ThanxWhy would you "TWEAK" your network settings? Did you reset everything back to the default values? Otherwise there's simply no comparing ...

Bit of a strange question,I tweak my settings because the default settings cater for dial up connections, the rwin is much to low at default and my connection top speed and ping AND page load times are better, have proved it on many occasions,my win7 has always been tweaked LIKE that, and run sometimes better than supposed to be.I always get 32 mb top speed and min. 3.5 upload which is over my advertised speed of 30/3.I get 28mb down and sometimes 2mb up at default values at best.
I think I'm in the wrong place if u ask why I would tweak my connection, thanx for reply anywayMy point is that you should reset everything back to its default settings and then restart the modem to start from scratch. It was not a question.

I'm sure you consider yourself quite the master tweaker but there's a reason the default settings are the default settings.
No one can help you if you got all sorts of customised settings going on.

Not only that, I don't think 2.5 through 15Mbit is all that low for an ADSL connection so what's the PROBLEM here if Virgin says there is none?
Well, I assume you have ADSL. You called it "dial-up" which I seriously doubt you'd have. Although it'd be quite COMMENDABLE if you managed to tweak dial-up to download at ADSL speeds.

Solve : D-link card wont connect via windows 7?

Answer»

So my genius brother has taken it upon himself to BUILD his own computer despite knowing nothing about building computers. The task has fallen on me to finish setting up what he couldnt.

He felt the need to completely revamp our internet also, which wasnt broken but i suppose NEEDED to be fixed anyways. He has gone out and bought both a new router and a card for his desktop. MY desktop (joel-pc) is now hardlined into the router, and his desktop (sean-pc) has the card in it.

-the router is an Asus RT-N53
There are multiple computers already on the network, working fine:

joel-pc: running windows 7, hardlined into the router, working fine
joel-netbook: running windows xp, uses generic w.e hp decided to use for a card, working fine
sean-pc: the idiot-build computer, running windows 7, has a d-link DWA-552 Xtreme N card, will not connect for the life of me; it wont even discover either band of the router, yet it occasionally will pick up our neighbors connections which are farther away than the router
sean-netbook: running windows xp, uses w.e manufacturer decided to use for a card, working fine
mandy-pc: running windows 7, was a store-bought all-in-one desktop pc and has some integrated wifi card from hp, working fine
danny-pc: running windows xp, uses a d-link card (not sure on exact model), working fine
There are also 2 PS3's which connect wirelessly (albeit very slowly) without problem.

i tried changing our channel width on the router from AUTO to 7 (highest it offered) and it didnt work for the desktop (sean-pc). Im not particularly savvy when it comes to networking issues, so i have no other idea what to do to change it. I manually downloaded the latest drivers from dlink, manually installed those for the card, and still, nothing.

mandy-pc was able to seamlessly connect automatically as well as discover the network with no problem, so the only other distinguishing factor apart from the difference in hardware is the fact that every computer with the exception of sean-pc and sean-netbook, is on the same floor as the router.
My brother assures me however that he has bought "top of the line" hardware for both the router and his card, and that the fact that its on a different floor should not matter.

Additionally, if this might help the diagnosis, I originally followed all instructions that came with the Asus router, figured to have set it up fine. Im having no real problems with all other computers, other than the fact that our internet seems to be pretty slow. I only notice the SLOWNESS when my brother and i try to party-up on call of duty on our ps3's, when our connection usually seems to go to crap.
The router is dual-band, so i set up a 2.4g network which all the computers in the house use, and a 5g network which i left the ps3's to connect to (the Asus setup utility claimed this was optimal as the 5g was supposed to be "specialized for gaming").
Where im going with this is that PERHAPS our slow connection/my using of the 2 bands might have been improperly configured (despite every other device getting at least SOME connectivity) such that my brothers d-link DWA-552 is unable to pick up the router?

any-all help would be greatly appreciated. Have you tried the card in another computer?
Have you tried to "Manually connect to a hidden WiFi network" in Windows 7 and manually enter in the router's SSID?

What are the specs of your brother's computer? (I'm asking this because I once had an issue with an underpowered computer causing a Realtek RTL8185 PCI WiFi card to frequently drop connections due to signal issues and causing the computer to crash whenever more than 2 USB devices that drew their power from the USB port were plugged in)
Your brother's PC could be in a dead spot just out of range of the wireless coverage-try to move it AROUND the room and see if the network is picked up.hi yes the card works in other computers and i dont think its a deadspot because his netbook and old computer both had internet in the same spot

Computer specs:

os: windows 7 home premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Bios: Bios Date : 02/05/10 19:13:52 Ver: 08.00.10

Network adapter: D-link DWA-552 XtremeN Desktop Adapter
SSD: OCZ vertex 3 60 GB
HDD: western digital velociraptor 300 GB
Samsung 12x blueray drive
Speakers: Realtek high def audioWe can rule out your PSU as it is more than adequate for your system power needs. We have also ruled out the possibility of the card being unable to detect your 2.4 or 5 GHz band-it works in other computers.
Have you tried the card in both of the 2 PCI slots that your motherboard has? Have you installed the latest D-Link drivers?(Windows does have default drivers which may or may not work properly with your card)
Have you tried what I suggested above, that is http://www.7tutorials.com/how-connect-hidden-wireless-networks and enter in your router's SSID?Are you setting up the router yourself or are you using all those utilities that come with the router?
What kind of wireless encryption are you using? And what settings have you changed in the router?
Did you shut down any torrent software?

Personally, I'd have restored the default settings by now and simply started over from scratch.
Especially if the router can't be detected wirelessly and if network connections are slow.

Solve : Limit network file sharing for one file type.?

Answer»

At work, 20 or so employees on different shifts share about a dozen different computers all over the SHOP. We need to share certain files, but we get into big trouble on one file type when someone opens up the file on another COMPUTER at the other end of the shop. We have lost major work on numerous occasions when someone opened up a file, then forgot and let it sit open. Then they went to another computer, worked the program for a day or two. Then after having saved and closed the program, someone else closes the earlier opened file and selects save, thus overwriting the newer file.

Is it possible to limit file sharing for one specific file type on an office network, while allowing sharing for all others?
Our local computers are running Windows XP. But the network drive may be on another system.

Our administrator suggests that this cannot be done without killing file sharing for the whole network.

I think that there must be a way. Microsoft Office does it by default. When we open a word or excel file on one computer and then on a second computer, it informs us that the file is already open and can be opened only in read only.

How can we similar functionality on another file type?

Thank You! Quote from: llmeyer1000 on December 16, 2011, 11:35:43 PM

How can we similar functionality on another file type?
The problem isn't the file type, but rather the program you are using with it.

Contact the vendor and tell them their product is hopelessly broken.

Unless the vendor is Adobe, in which case they "don't support networked file-sharing"I have thought about contacting the vendor, but I thought that there might be a simple windows fix. I'm not a networking person, but if the problem is simply our windows/network setup, then I thought we should look at fixing that first. Thus the reason I posted my question here.

If I don't find the simple fix, then I will contact the company. BUT! I will not tell them that their program is "hopelessly broken." It is a powerful program and suits our needs perfectly except for this one problem.

By your definition, I'm pretty sure that many other programs like notepad are also "hopelessly broken". Windows allows you to open multiple copies of a text file with notepad. If you save on one copy in notepad, but then later close and save a different copy of notepad(with the same file open), you have just overwritten the newer copy. You have the same problem with notepad that I earlier described. That functionality can cause problems, but I'll bet you don't stop using notepad. You simply work more carefully and try not to open multiple copies.

The problem we have here is that we have too many employees working too many computers, so the being careful method sometimes fails.

Like I said earlier Microsoft Office does it very well, while many other programs, like Microsoft Notepad does not.

(If you don't believe me just try it. Compare MS Offive to MS Notepad.) Quote from: llmeyer1000 on December 17, 2011, 12:25:09 AM

The possibility of finding some kind of workaround for your problem might be increased if you mentioned what this "powerful program" is called, and what version.
Gibbscam Virtual Gibbs version 7.7

I didn't mention it at first because because I thought that it was most likely a simple file sharing issue that the answer would be the same for any particular file type.

Our company is licensed for 8 copies of the 3D Mill version and one copy of the lathe program. We are completely legal, but ... The problem about contacting the vendor is that when the economy got bad a few years ago we stopped paying for support. The company is dragging it's feet about paying the $30,000.00 reinstatement fee for current support. I can't say that I blame them completely. The version we have still does the job for the most part and $30,000.00 is something to consider.

I thought about digging through the registry to see how Microsoft Office does it so well, but I thought one of you guys might already have the fix.

Microsoft Office does it well because it's written properly. It's not because it has magical values in the registry or anything, but because it is actually programmed properly. And I'm not being "overly brash" when I say properly. The functionality is built into the Operating System- it's all part of the file management API, they just aren't using it properly; and they clearly don't test it properly if they didn't find this out.

Basically, when it comes to networked drives/shared files, it all comes down to how it's opened.

If a Program Opens a file with Sharing flags (Such as FILE_SHARE_READ, FILE_SHARE_WRITE) it means that other users of the program can open that file and read and write to it without issues. The contention is that the program understands that other instances of the program can do that. If other instances of the application reading or writing to the same file while the first one has it opens causes problems, the application shouldn't have passed the sharing flags. This is actually quite common; the developers ASSUME that the OS handles everything with regard to sharing files simply by virtue of passing the flag, but the flag really means the application is saying "Yes, it's ok for other people to open, read, and write the file, I know how to deal with those situations and am programmed in such a way to deal with it". I'm mildly surprised that a program that has such a high price point and support contract would be riddled with such an obvious issue that even I know about (I guess that's what you get when you have a bunch of enterprise developers, haha).

As you might have guessed I have very low tolerance for ill-written software that can't even take advantage of something that was pretty much a solved problem by about 1993 (that is, networked file sharing), especially when said software is so expensive. But when you carve out a niche software market I guess you can set your own standards.

So how can you fix the issue? Well, the way I see it, you can't, really. The issue boils down to the applications use of the dwShareMode parameter when it calls CreateFile() to open the file, setting it to READ/WRITE when the application in fact cannot deal with the contingencies that allowing other applications to do that represents. So the "fix" would be some sort of patch to make it so all the calls to CreateFile pass in 0 for the dwShareMode parameter, and then hoping the application at least handles a Permission denied error.

For contrast, the way the Office apps (probably) do it, is they pass in FILE_SHARE_READ to CreateFile(), which allows other users and applications to read the file, but not write (or delete) it. Attempts to do that raise a error, and The office application has extra LOGIC in that case to DETERMINE who/what has the file open and where they are and display that message (for example if you try to change a document and save it when somebody has it open already, you get a prompt).
BC  I'm sorry that I did not get back sooner to read your reply.

I hope to address this with Virtual Gibbs sometime soon. We are working on our management here to spend the bucks and reinstate our support with Gibbs. That may take a few months(knowing management here), but hopefully less. It's possible that Gibbs has already resolved the problem, but we have not received the fix because we are too far behind.

Anyway, I do appreciate your explanation and will likely use your information in my future discussions with Gibbs. Thanks for the explanation!

Answer»

my old router GOT its wi-fi card fired and I had to change the router.

I'm working with 2 computers, 1 laptop and 1 desktop NOT in LAN. The desktop is connected by D-link Air Plus G120

Now I have been able to reconnect wit my notebook which connects by internal card, but the desktop still offers me the connection it was on before the change and there is to trace of the new connection

Still I FOUND a reference of the old connection name in a window of G120 - I tried to erase it but I have been not able to get it

is somebody able to give me a friendly help ? THANKS a lot and .... Happy and Profitable New Year
You can REMOVE a network from the "Preferred networks" section if you wish...

If you want to connect to the new router, which has a new SSID, you can just view the available wireless networks and choose your one.

Solve : Difficulty getting a Westell style MSTATEA DSL modem to work properly.?

Answer»

I have had DSL service with AT&T for several years.  Up until now, I've always had Motorola DSL modems and have never had a problem.  My last Motorola modem was fried in an electrical storm in the fall.  When I called for a replacement, I was sent a Westell MSTATEA modem.  Right now, I have three, only one of which works "sometimes".  I have to return two of them since they are all under warranty.  (Westell sold its DSL modem business to Netgear last year and the model number does not come up when I WENT to the Netgear site.  Westell's site refers all QUESTIONS to Netgear.)

I have spent hours on the phone and in chat with AT&T's support people and have not been able to connect to the internet with any regularity.  I've been to the site 192.168.1.254 and have been unsuccessful in setting the modem up.  I've made screenshots of the error messages I've received but haven't attached them.  If anyone thinks they would be helpful, I'll be more than happy to post them.

My computer is an Acer Aspire 5532, 64 bit, AMD brand running Windows 7.  I mostly use the most recent Internet Explorer.  By the way, I'm a retired electronics and instrumentation tech; I learned BASIC on an old Apple IIe with the GREEN monitor in 1984; my first computer was a Commodore 64 and the DOS I learned to work with was IBM (not Microsoft) 1.1.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for working with the modem I have.

ThanksI also had a Motorola modem and it went bad. Not for the same reason. I bought a Two-Eire from AT&T and it worked for a long time. It to went bad.

I was desperate, so I sent to a local Stapes and got the only DSL router they had. A Netgear model #DGN 2000 which has wireless and LAN.

The Netgear has IP 192.168.1.1 and is very different from the Two-Wire.
Still, ATT tech support was able to walk me through the setup.  There were able to make the connection for me somehow. My e-mail and password are somehow used to LET the modem enter the ATT SERVER. Not sure how it works, but it does.

Of cause the wireless part I had to do myself. They got it to work to the router. I had to start out with my laptop wired to the router.
That is most of what I know about using  ATT DSL.  The tech support person I got was brilliant. Took about half an hour, but it worded and has ever since.

Solve : Wireless speed slow.?

Answer»

Hi, i have just bought a Acer Aspire 5750 and set it up only to find that my WIRELESS is running at 5.5mbps where my other notebooks run at 75mbps. The speed is still fast but i would rather have it running at full speed. I have been reading up so many pages on how to fix the issue with no luck. I have a Broadcom 802.11n network adapter and running a netcomm N150 modem. My older Acer works fine and my toshiba also works fine both running a 802.11n adapter . Does anyone have a cure for this???any HELP would be much appreciated
Make sure your Wireless Transmit Power is set to "Full." and that your Power Saving Mode is set to "Off."

I have noticed that some wireless cards modify their link speed based on the activity of the wireless connection. I have an Azurewave Atheros AR9285/5895 card which when idle has a connection speed of 8.0Mbps, but when downloading a movie, goes all the way up to 150 Mbps.I have tried the power options, mine are slightly different to the realtek ones but its still the same.Update of whats been done, i have reinstalled windows 7 HOME premium. I uninstalled network adapters and reinstalled them, i have played with power settings and various other settings. Still sitting at 5.5 mbps. 75 mbps?! You might wanna check on reviews or comments online for users who bought the same model regarding the wifi connection. If you have a WARRANTY or a repair deal take it in and have them check the wifi card antenna connection my niece had the same with hers and now it works GREAT her antenna was loose not even connected

Is it possible in anyway?Yes, already been done. It is called MICROWAVE communication. Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 31, 2011, 02:05:51 AM

Yes, already been done. It is called microwave communication.

Or "Wi-fi", which uses the 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz frequency bands. Some textbooks define microwaves as radio frequencies between 1 metre (300 MHz, 0.3 GHz) and 1 millimetre (300 GHz), but a more common definition is anything above 1000 MHz (1 GHz). In order to share an Internet connection, the computer that will do the sharing must have two network cards or ports. Instructions on how to share an Internet connection on a computer using Linux are very widely available indeed.

Example https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Internet/ConnectionSharing

Microwave is not always  an exact definition. Common usage  is up to 30 GHz. As Salmon TROUT said, specific bands are signed  to avoid conflict with different services. But for for Near Filed communication there is a wide choice of spectrum space. In the future more devices using Near Field will show up in the consumer market. Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 31, 2011, 07:38:40 AM
Microwave is not always  an exact definition. Common usage  is up to 30 GHz.

I agree that there is no uniform definition of "microwave" and indeed the bands identified by letters of the alphabet are different in US and European frequency charts, but they all go way over 30 GHz.

This is the Radio Society Of GREAT Britain microwave band list:

Microwave frequency bands
Letter  Range (GHz)
L         1   to  2
S         2   to  4
C         4   to  8
X         8   to 12
Ku       12   to 18
K        18   to 26.5
Ka       26.5 to 40
Q        33   to 50
U        40   to 60
V        50   to 75
E        60   to 90
W        75   to 110
F        90   to 140
D       110   to 170

When radars were first developed at K band during World War II, it was not realized that there was a nearby absorption band (due to water vapour and oxygen in the atmosphere). To avoid this problem, the original K band was split into a lower band, Ku, and upper band, Ka.

I already had the configuration specified in the document Salmon Trout linked to me.

Sadly, but nice try.

Which bit are you having a problem with?  Using a Linux box as a router?Would this not be done by creating a network bridge (say, br0) between the Wireless lan network device (eg. wlan0) and the wired ethernet (eg. eth1)?

By modifying /etc/network/interfaces to include something like this:

Code: [Select]auto br0
iface br0 inet dhcp
bridge_ports wlan0 eth2
up \
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 essid trekweb && \
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 channel 4 && \
/sbin/iwconfig wlan0 mode Master

with appropriate changes depending on the specific configuration. Though I'll be brutally honest, I couldn't get the bridge started properly when I was trying to. It is possible, and the above segment is a clue but I've no idea if my wlan0 is just funked out (some wireless tools complain about it too) or what.

Solve : i need some ip address help please?

Answer»

hi im new here so not sure if im in the right section sorry if im not ...basically what im wondering is  if someone SENDS me an email from Ireland ( I am also in Ireland ) is it possible for it to have an american ip address ? I have a friend from new York who is coming to visit me in Ireland they were supposed to be here yesterday and we were gonna arrange to meet . They emailed yesterday saying they are here in Ireland but can't meet till next week . I was sceptical because they have CHANGED travel plans a couple of times now so I checked the ip of their email and it's new York !! Could this be possible if they actually are in Ireland ?I don't think the person is very good with computers or USING a proxy as some people have suggested or a vpn  I doubt to be honest they even know wat an ip is so basically I'm wondering is it possible and if so how likely . It's a hotmail account .. When I email from my hotmail account the ip is Ireland do why would there's be any different if they actually are in Ireland
.theres two ip's on the header for the email one is xoriginating xp which is from microsoft which im assuming is the servers ip and the other ip is new york syracuse where the persons from so does this just mean that cause their account was set up in the states it will always have an american ip or should there ip now be in ireland if the email was sent from here??my understanding was that the ip would be from the wifi or 3g provider they are using i.e now it would be an irish company therefore and irish ip ? or am i completely wrong on that i really need to know for sure before i accuse this person of lying to me
It depends on where you're reading this ip from. I think that the ip you are reading is where the mail server is. If that is the case, then it would say new york no matter where your friend is.thanks for the reply ..im getting the ip from the email header ,it gives two ips one says its microsoft corporation ,the other is based in new york ...each time they'v emailed me since they'v ''been in ireland '' its the same ip based in syaracuse but previous emails iv gotten from them have the same microsoft corp ip PLUS diferent ips all based in and around syracuse new york ..i just thought that if they were in ireland using irish wifi or 3g then the second ip wouldnt be new york it would now be an irish ip ...thanks anyway If you could cut and paste all email headers here, removing all email addresses, that would be helpful.  The routing headers usually take the form of a series of entries like this:

Received: from mail.sendingserver.com ([www.xxx.yyy.zzz]:abcde)   by
 smtp.nextserver with esmtp (NBT 4.72 2)   id gi-BB-er-ish   for
 [email protected]; Tue, 25 Oct 2011 08:17:04 +0100

There will be several headers of that nature.  The last header that looks like that will usually (but not always) contain details of the location of the originating server.  Bear in mind however that if I work in the UK but my corporate mail server is in America, the originating IP may appear to be American.

here is the email header in full as requested hopefully  you can make more sense of it than i can this is a reply from their hotmail account sent to my yahoo account if that matters

That IP address belongs to Microsoft.

There's also a suggestion (not necessarily reliable) about the SENDING computer:

Here's the WHOIS info for the owner of that IP address:

This is where you're getting the suggestion that the sender is in New York, I suspect.  Whatever the case, firstly, that X-Originating-IP may not be supplying correct information, for reasons outside the control of the sender.  Secondly, if as I suggested earlier the sender is using a corporate email server, the originating IP address will in most cases be from wherever the in-house email server resides.  Your sender could be connecting via a webmail interface, VPN, Outlook Anywhere or any one of a number of different methods that would all result in the first-mentioned IP address being the corporate mail server.

Given that Hotmail is mentioned in the email headers, I would go with the webmail explanation and breathe easy.  i  really really need to get in contact with the original poster of this (tomgire) if possible ,can anyone help me ? there is no email listed in his account. Send a PM (Personal Message). If they have email notification turned on, they will get an email telling them of your PM. After that it is their choice whether they read it, and after that, if they respond or not. Irrespective of the number of "reallys" you put before the word "need", that is likely to be the full extent of any help you will get here.

Solve : How do I delete an network and rename an existing one??

I want to delete the thing that SAYS DSL and rename NETGEAR 2. I THOUGHT I could erase the NETGEAR 2 if I created a NEW network but now I have 2 of them and it looks weird. I know it's not necessary since I still have internet anyway, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but I don't know how to go about this situation. Help would be appreciated. You can CHANGE the Netgear 2 by going to Network and Sharing Center and double clicking the House icon under View your Active Networks. You could check previously connected profile network under Manage Wireless Network and remove DSL.TY

Hi all. I have an issue I cant get my head AROUND. I have 3 pcs. pc A is WIN7, pc B is xp, pc C is also xp. All three pcs are ethernet cabled to a ROUTER and switch. I recently played with pc C by changing the motherboard and hard drives, but had an issue trying to restore a backup (changing from ide to sata) Short story is I put the pc back the way it originally was, and all works ok EXCEPT. Pc C has internet access, and can access both other pcs as per normal, but pcs A and B cannot see pc C.
pc A & B can ping C successfully. When I look in the file manager in pc C it cant even access the files in its own BRANCH of the network tree. Whats the best plan of attack?Try to re -setup the connection again Quote from: johnha169 on January 01, 2012, 04:47:16 PM

Solve : Limited or no connectivity LAN?

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 Series running Windows XP Service Pack 3.  My LAN controller is a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller.  My computer says the device is working PROPERLY.  When I unplug the ethernet cable and then PLUG it back in, it says "acquiring network ADDRESS" and then goes to "Limited or no connectivity".  This connection problem happened after unplugging the cable from the router and then PLUGGING it back in.  Any help?
Try switching off the Router and PC , then switch the router back on and wait for it to connect (usually the internet / broadband light goes green) , then turn the PC on.

Can one use just two wire's for HOOKING up a computer to a net work connection instead of all eight wires?

John8 wires? For hooking one computer up to the net?
My internet setup goes like this: Wall Socket>Modem>Router>Computer. 2 Ethernet(RJ45) cables, 1 RJ11 cable.
It would help if you took a picture of your existing setup and posted it here... I'm baffled as to why you need so many cables. No I mean the  cable itself has 8 conductors would I be able to make it transfer data with just two conductor, kinda like the OLD serial cable's had 9 pin and they would transfer data with only two pin or two wires?

JohnAll 8 wires are used.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_5_cable

Why would you want to do that anyway?  Pre-made cat 5 cables are cheap, and custom made cat 5 cables are EASY to make. And I should have ADDED back in the days when you could use two wires the average speed was probably about 9,600 baud.It is possible to get transfer rates up to 3 mega bits per SECOND using plain twisted pair wire over a distance 1200 feet or more. But not with the standard hardware in a personal computer.

Standard CAT-5 cable is now very cheap if you buy it in bulk and put the connectors on yourself. Get it at home depot. CAT-5 Also makes good extension cable for telephones.
You can put a voice line onto a Ethernet connection and it works fine. If you follow the instructions. I have an extension phone on the CAT-5 cable that goes to my shop. The Ethernet still works well at 100 mega bits per second even while somebody is using the phone. Quote from: rthompson80819 on December 07, 2011, 01:09:13 PM

Not quite correct.  Two pairs (four conductors) are used for 10Mbps/100Mbps ethernet.  Gigabit ethernet requires all four pairs.

You can use cable economisers to run two 100Mbps connections over a single cat5 cable. That is the information that I have seen is 2 wire's 10m, 4 wire's 100m, and all 8 for 1000m. It seems like to me that inside a house to wire computer for internet 2 wires would be enough if my connection speed is only 1m, it just seem like a waste of wire?

John Quote from: John1397 on December 31, 2011, 08:55:22 AM

Are you thinking of 10BASE2 with coax and BNC connectors?  The cabling and all components would be more expensive, not to mention that the whole thing is a pig to cable up.  10BASE-T or 100BASE-T is the standard for almost all networking equipment you'll be encountering, from network cards to switches.  They both require two pairs, i.e. four conductors.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable#Conductors_required

Solve : Managed and Unmanaged switches?

Answer»
Is a managed switch 'unmanaged' until it is configured and then it becomes managed? What i mean to ask is, Is a managed switch that has not been configured still plug and play, until it is configured?

Unmanaged switches — These switches have no configuration interface or options. They are plug and play. They are typically the least expensive switches, found in home, SOHO, or small businesses. They can be desktop or rack mounted.

Managed switches — These switches have one or more methods to modify the operation of the switch. Common management methods include: a command-line interface (CLI) accessed via serial console, telnet or Secure Shell, an embedded Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent allowing management from a remote console or management station, or a web interface for management from a web browser. Examples of configuration changes that one can do from a managed switch include: enable features such as Spanning Tree Protocol, set port bandwidth, create or modify Virtual LANs (VLANs), etc. Two sub-classes of managed switches are marketed today...

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch#Configuration_options

If a managed switch supports out-of-the-box plug&play, it can QUALIFY as unmanaged, I'd say. Depends on the device.

That's what my opinion is, but can not find any evidence, especially with Cisco switches.Especially with Cisco, your going to find switches or routers, all over the place.  At home I've got a Linksys (owned by Cisco now) 4 port switch that is plug and play, and unmanaged.  But I once had a Cisco router at work that cost $75,000 and took a Cisco engineer 3 days to set up.  I'd call that managed.

I don't THINK there is a simple answer to your question.  If the router is meant for consumer use it PROBABLY is plug and play.  But if it meant for business use and high traffic use it is unlikely plug and play.

And the manual was about the size of most big city phone books.I suspect (but this is anecdotal only) that most managed switches will perform almost like a dumb switch out of the box; specifically little or no layer 3 intervention, definitely no layer 4 intervention and all ports set to auto-detect on speed and duplex.  Certain tree-spanning protocols will probably be switched on by default but not configured optimally for your network.

Yes, that what i think, but have had no definite answers and can not seem to find any. UNLESS a plow through pages of manual, and at the moment i'm assignment writing and don't have the time.

I've found a unmanaged high speed serial switch that supports VLAN and, i think that will be enough for what i need.

If you don't need management capabilities, always buy unmanaged.  Managed switches are MUCH more expensive...

Solve : loop back question?

Answer»
I've created 7 subnets with 3 routers using the Packet Tracer software from Cisco. All of it is configured and working fine. The problem is, there is another router which has an IP address for a ISP, so that my network can connect to this and i can configure it for internet access. I've been told that i can connect one of my routers to the 'internet' router using a loop back address, yet i cant seem to get this to work OR find much information about it.

Any help ?Can you post a network diagram?Okay I just downloaded Packet Tracer v5.3.2.0027, playing with it
Really is an interesting tool:

How did you set up the network? Here is a copy of my network

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The Warmingham router, in the centre, is connected to the Internet, the router on the right (router 0). The internet isp address 145.45.5.100. The warmingham router is connected to Subnet E, to the north, with a network address of 172.56.2.0/27 and 2 WANs.
WAN A, 172.56.2.32/30 on the left and WAN B 172.56.2.36/30 on the right

And which networks need to be able to route out to the internet?

And which networks need to be able to route out to the internet?

All of it, through the Warmingham router, which is connected to the isp internet router (router 0)
I just connected Router0 and Warmingham with a Serial connection, manually set 145.45.5.100 as the IP address on Serial 2 on Router0, and Warmingham Serial 2 has an IP address of 145.45.5.101/16... but I haven't figured out how to get Static and RIP routing to work yet.
There supposed to be some WAY to use a loop back address, apparently. I don't know though.I figured I had to go Google after I realized my lack of knowledge about Router IOS commands and routing were severely limiting my progress

Quote
A loopback on a router has to be configured as a virtual interface. These have a *LOT* of DIFFERENT USES, but to give just one example it can be used as a Router ID in an OSPF process if you don't want OSPF to pick the highest IP address of any physical interface on the router. In general, the loopback address is also the best one to ping to see if the router is up, since otherwise you'd be pinging the IP of a physical interface, and the router might be online via another interface if the one you're polling goes down.

Here's how you configure a loopback interface in Packet Tracer (or on a real router for that MATTER). In this example I just picked an IP address out of the sky (do NOT pick anything in the 127.x.x.x range since it is reserved for host loopbacks, and the router won't even let you do it):

enable
conf t
interface loopback 0
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.255
no shutdown
exit
exit
wr

You don't have to, but here I picked a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255, or a "host mask" since the loopback can be thought of as its own single-host network. Also you can make more than one loopback interface if you want.

Solve : Images/videos scrambles?

Answer»

Okay, I'm not sure where to put this, but since it's occurring to 2 computers over my network, I GUESS this is my best bet. So, lately some images and videos are showing up as scrambled. It happens randomly, so not everything is scrambled. At first I thought it was my graphics card and changed it, but to no avail. I've SCANNED it and ti seems it's not a virus. Anyways, just today my brother told me it was happening to him as well. We share internet, me being directly connected to the router and him wireless. I've asked for help in a couple places, but haven't gotten anything out of it.

A couple screenshots of it: http://i.imgur.com/xhy51.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/DZAC6.pngIt seems like a networking issue, although the cause on each computer could be different.

What's the make/model of the router being used?

Netgear wgr614 v7

Also, it only happens to online images/videos. Nothing saved on my computer is scrambled. Before I suggest a firmware update for you router, let's try a few things first to rule out a software issue in each computer.

Download yourself a Live CD of Puppy Linux.  It's got FLASH Player installed by default so, at least on the computer hooked up through a cable, all you have to do is boot off if it and try STREAMING some videos or looking at some online pictures (whatever it is you're doing) to see if your problem clears up.

Puppy Linux will allow you to configure the wireless connection fairly easy, but to avoid hassle we don't need, after you've tested your computer with Puppy, take the cable and use it on your brother's computer and try streaming some vids again and looking at some pics.

If your problem goes away then you've obviously got some software issues going on with both computers.  If this is the case, before reinstalling Windows (if that crosses your mind) you could try different browsers, disabling browser add-ons, disabling Windows start up programs and non-Microsoft services... Updating Flash player, or reinstalling it...checking in TASK Manager to see if there are any screwy, processes or services running...general operating system maintenance/troubleshooting stuff.

Update the router's firmware to the latest version from here:

Solve : Remote Desktop not working??

Answer»

I have been trying to connect to my laptop and it says Cannot find host.
I am getting the ip adress from my router device tableAre you doing it by the documentation?
Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop ConnectionYes. I have it enabled and I have them on the network and i know the password! P.S. the  one im connecting from is windows 7 and the one I am trying to connect to is Vista. Are they both on the same LAN?  Or are you connecting from a different site?yes. they are all on the same router. (They are like 20 feet away from each other.)
In that case fire up command PROMPT on the laptop and enter "ipconfig", to double-check that you are in fact using the correct IP address.

After that, MAKE SURE that remote desktop is enabled per Geek's link above (see the section "To allow remote connections on the computer you want to connect to").Also check they are on the same workgroup - not completely necessary, but sometimes helps.

Both computers must have unique names. Do NOT depend on the IP address.Forget the IP address.  Can both both PCs see each other in "Network places"?
no it does not.
ill try

Both are discoverable, and they STILL wont connect!Good. So you have permissions.  -Right?

Did we  establish that you are NOT trying to get into a wimpy version of Windows 7? Read this:
Quote

All editions of Windows 7 include Remote Desktop Connection.

You can use Remote Desktop to initiate a connection from any edition of Windows 7.

You can connect to computers running Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Enterprise.

You can't use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to computers running Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, or Windows 7 Home Premium.
Is that the problem?

Solve : Starting over with home net work?

I'm wanting to start over setting up a NETWORK at home.I'm wanting to be able to wipe out all networking information from main computer, laptop,WII,tablet, reader.I'm hooked up with a cable modem, cisco valetplus m20 router and my desktop computer.Just not sure where to start over at,any help WOULD be appreciated.James.I do not see a reason to "wipe" networking info on your devices... but on Windows you can delete your preferred WIRELESS network settings, on the iPhone/iPad there is an option to "Forget Wireless Network"
All you have to do is just replace your router with the new one, enter your broadband credentials through the router config webpage, set up a WiFi password, create a guest network on a different subnet, open the ports for your applications (GAME servers, web servers, torrent clients, etc), and you're done. If you're feeling a little adventurous you can even flash your router with custom firmware at http://www.dd-wrt.com

Solve : D-Link vs TP-Link??

Answer»

Hello,

I am considering two new routers to replace an aging draft n SINGLE band netgear in my home. I have 1 desktop, 2 laptops, 2 phones, and a small windows home server 2011 on the network. (only thing hard wired is the desktop).

I am looking for performance and features, and was consider these two routers:

D-Link DIR 825
TP-Link TL-WR2843nd

What would you suggest? Thoughts and opinions welcome

Thanks,
DiatechFor performance and features, I'd almost always go with DrayTek.  (Cisco scares me!)  I would, but the $360 price tag puts me off a bit for the cheapest model I could find.. the other two MODELS listed above were in the 100-150$ range
You might check out this article on PC magazine.  It talks mainly about Ciscos new router but it also mentions a couple of other brands that have similar features.

I can understand why.  Had trouble with my new D-Link DR-632, 8-port router w/ WiFi & USB.  CS is nice & helpful, but not that knowledgeable.  Replacement router started doing the same as the old only an hour ago, but after fooling with the wireless settings, I may just have FOUND the solution myself.  There's nothing really wrong with the router, just way too many settings for even the advanced user. There's always Linksys (cheap Cisco).

You do get what you pay for in this sector, I'm afraid.  If you want high-end performance and features, you generally have to pay for it.

The other route to go down though and well worth considering if you're on a budget is to buy a cheaper router and put DD-WRT on it.  Check carefully beforehand to ensure that your chosen router is compatible.  This will certainly get you a pretty IMPRESSIVE feature set and may even improve the peformance of the router. They do have a version for the DIR-632.  Just reflashed my firmware today.  I had heard of it, but never needed it until now.  I suspect most give up & just throw it out.  Good business plan:  "sell junk, customer discards it, & then buys more junk".  I think most of the internal hardware is pretty much the same on many SOHO routers, i.e.  Atheros WiSOC based Hardware.  The developer did the firmware in less than a day. I on the other hand have a DIR-655 (Gigabit Lan, Wireless-N, USB) that hasn't had a single issue running for nearly 2 and a half years straight. Then again I don't screw around with the settings I don't understand and then blame the vendor....

On a side-note, the DIR-655 cannot have DD-WRT installed so it could very well use different innards than similar models. I might be stuck with the DIR 825.. I don't know about anyone else, but the TP link has been removed from the manufacturers page.. I cant find this thing for sale anywhere! (or even an explanation as to why!) The WiFi dropouts are a know problem with the DIR-632; D-Link fails to acknowledge it or provide a fix.  I bought it because of the wireless, not much good if you have to be next to the router in case it drops out, and you have to reboot it.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-632
Runs standard version of DD-WRT.
The biggest knock about this router is it's frequent WIFI drops and lockups when using the stock firmware. Installing DD-WRT corrects this isssue.

I've been using it for a couple days.  The USB doesn't use the D-Link Shareport Utility to function.  It's enabled as a network drive in the firmware setup.

I can connect to it with internet but I really want to configure it, it's already high up on the CEILING and I don't want to go to the attic and go unplug the ADAPTER just so I can configure it.
I found this http://192.168.0.229 but seems to me that my PC has to be connected to the Access Point through LAN, I tried accessing it through wireless connection but it doesn't work.

I'm not sure I UNDERSTAND. What is it you NEED to configure? Exactly what are you trying to do? Your system should see the access point in your Networking applet in control panel-To change it's name instead of  "Netgear - 0"

Both are desktop units linked by ethernet CABLE via DLink WBR1310 wireless router.
I would like to be able to share screens, files,printer/scanner. Internet sharing is not a problem as they share a DSL cable modem.
The PC shows up on the Mac but when attempting to connect an error pops up "connection failed." The Mac does not show up on the PC?
There are no other computers on the network.
Can someone offer me, or link me to, easy, step by step INSTRUCTIONS on how to do this?

Why do you only have two options for internet ACCESS?  No DSL or cable?  Using a mobile phone for internet access can be very expensive, check your fine PRINT before you get carried away.  Some phone plans have unlimited data access, but others have limits and if you go over those limits the costs can be excessive.Live out in the middle of no where. 1.Insert the original Windows XP CD (Windows XP with Service Pack 2 is preferred, but not required) and reboot the computer. You may need to configure your computer to boot from the CD-ROM drive.
2.When the Windows XP Setup has started, press "R" to "repair the Windows XP installation using Recovery Console".
3.Select the Windows installation to repair (generally this is C:\Windows) by typing its number and then pressing ENTER.
4.Type the Administrator password and press ENTER.
5.Type the following commands:
D:                [ENTER]
CD I386               [ENTER]
EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32   [ENTER]
NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive has a different letter assigned to it, enter "X:" instead, where X is the appropriate drive letter.
After entering "EXPAND USERINIT.EX_ C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32" you should see the text "1 file(s) copied", in which case all went well.

Remove the Windows XP CD, type "EXIT" and press ENTER to restart your computer. You should now be able to log on as normally.

Solve : Draytek Router Settings?

Answer»

I have recently changed from a Dlink router to a Draytek Vigor 2830n.  I have PCs running XP Home and 7 Home connected with CABLES.  I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium.  Here is the scenario:

With Dlink router:
PC with cable - laptop with cable > I can see the laptop from the PCs and the laptop can see other LAN devices and the internet
PC with cable - laptop WIRELESS    > ditto

With Draytek router:
PC with cable - laptop with cable > I can see the laptop from the PCs and the laptop can see other LAN devices and the internet
PC with cable - laptop wireless    > I cannot see the laptop from the PCs and the laptop cannot see other LAN devices - the laptop does connect to the internet though

I have tried disabling the computer firewalls and the Draytek router firewalls - this did not help.

I have connected the Dlink to the Draytek with a cable.  If I connect the laptop to the Draytek wireless network the problem persists.  If I piggyback from the Dlink wireless to the Draytek and onto the LAN then all is OK.

The problem seems to be some wireless setting on the Draytek but Draytek support SAY this is not the case.
Any ideas?  This is probably due to WLAN isolation from the wired network-can you check if the PC with cable and laptop with wireless are on the same subnet?

Your router does support Virtual LAN on specific SSIDs and LAN ports, so check in your router config if any VLANS are enabled.

Solve : Remote access of desktop computer?

Answer»

If you have a desktop COMPUTER without a
1. Cable CONNECTION
2. DSL connection
3. Dialup connection
4. Wifi
5. Bluetooth
Is it still possible for a hacker to remotely access the computer? Why are you asking?
Yes

Any Internet connection can be hacked. (well attempted to being hacked)
I can't elaborate any further than that, as hacking is obviously ill3gal. Quote from: tads on November 28, 2011, 11:34:37 PM

I'm guessing we're talking about a standalone machine with no connection to any network at all.  By definition there is no means of remote access.  A would-be cracker would need physical access to the machine (e.g. to install a covert network access device or a hardware keylogger) in order to control or obtain any information from it.There is monitoring equipment that can be held directly outside your home and see what you are doing inside (on the computer) as well. Even if not near a WINDOW!
Not to MENTION satellites in the sky (well, space) that can zoom in on you whilst outside on a clear day.
Too far fetched? It's possible.

Are you thinking of TV reception monitoring equipment?  Or line-of-sight high-gain videography?

Solve : Microsoft Message Queue 2003 vs 2008?

Answer»

Hello -

My company is LOOKING to upgrade our Windows Server to 2008 from 2003.  Our development environment already has 2008, and are looking to upgrade production to 2008 a well.  Our CURRENT production environment (2003) has some differences as to how Microsoft Message Queue is set up VS 2008.  2008 has login via Network Service account, while production (2003) has local account login.  Recovery for 2008 has repeated retry upon login FAILURE, where 2003 has no retry.

This was setup prior to my arrival, and nobody seems to know or rememeber why there are differences.  Anyone aware of any potential pitfalls regarding Message Queuing and Windows Server 2008?

THANKS in advance.I have had little to no experience with Server 2003/2008, but I'll try to help:

Solve : ACER aspire 7220 - Connection unidentified?

Answer»

Problem: Connection unidentified.
First time i GOT to work this computer had no cable connection(unidentified), after tiring myself out i got the connection to work (luck) but sometimesI had to restart the computer several times for the Internet connection to work, but that was fine with me, this was a few months back.
Suddenly it wouldn't connect to internet no matter what i did. I put it aside for 1 month but 2 weeks ago i turned it on and it worked for 2 days and then it gave up. for 3 days I've tried to fix it, I searched GOOGLE for a fix but only found a bunch of OTHERS with similar problem, figured out its a common problem when it comes to Acer aspire with windows vista. Came here to ask for help to restore computer to its early days and found what i wanted by using "search" and I restored it to factory settings and all and thought it would fix it, but no.  Tried to tweak with services, safemode start, diagnostic start everything but nothing worked. Used avg PC tuneup to turn services back to default, tried to turn on some but nope.

I can't update the drivers CUZ the wireless network worked yesterday but even it isn't working now, and even if it did its speed is excruciating(next door unprotected library/school connection)
I have a router at work, but took it home and connected directly to internet and it didn't work, I have a good connection at home...
Any help is appreciated
