Solve : Problem setting up wireless printer?

Answer»

I may be NAIVE here, but I've just bought a Panasonic KX-MB2000E printer , installed the software provided and set it up to work with my laptop VIA a cable. However, I WANT it to work wirelessly as well (I have a wireless router at home through which the computers connect to the internet)

I followed the instructions in the manual, and entered the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway (that I got from doing a search on "ipconfig/all"), and I thought that would be enough to make it work wirelessly.. But it still doesn't work. It tells me that there it still doesn't detect a printer or scanner when I try to print and scan without the cable inserted. What am I missing (I hope it is something simple.....)Make sure that your wifi radio button is turned on for both laptop and printer will communicate. Check Devices and Printers in control panel if Panasonic printer is present. You have a Panasonic KX-MB2000E and you want to connect it using a local wireless router.  Direct connect works fine.
What OS are you using?
Does the print not have a setup CD that does it all for you?
Does the router do the DHCP or is it done by another device? Like a cable modem.
What kind of security does your local wireless have?

From the manual:
Quote

Do NOT connect the unit to a computer with the USB cable until prompted to do so during the setup
of Multi-Function Station (CD-ROM).
This indicates there is a CD for installation. Did you use it?
Yes - installed using setup CD.  I think I was just hoping that it would work wirelessly if I put the right details in, but perhaps it needs to be connected to the printer via ethernet port?

If I do this, do I need to set the DHCP on or off?  For the benefit of all, I am posting a copy of part of the manual I found.
Quote
2.10 Configuring the unit to access the LAN (KX-MB2000/
KX-MB2010/KX-MB2030 only)
You can print documents, scan documents, receive
faxes or send faxes (KX-MB2030 only) using a computer
connected to the LAN. To enable these features, you
need to set the IP address, subnet mask, and default
gateway in the unit.
Important:
R Consult your network administrator when setting
the IP address, subnet mask, and default
gateway.
2.10.1 Setting up automatically with a DHCP
server
Your situation:
– When only one unit is connected to the LAN.
If your network administrator manages the network with
a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server,
it will automatically assign an IP (Internet Protocol)
address, subnet mask, and default gateway to the unit.
1 After connecting the LAN cable to the unit and the
computer, turn the POWER switch ON.
R The IP address, subnet mask, and default
gateway will be set automatically.
2 Install Multi-Function Station on the computer that
you want to use it with. See page 24 for details.
Note:
...
This indicates the simple case where you only have one of these printers on the network. Just connect the Ethernet cable, turn on the power. Do not connect to you PC.The Ethernet cable GOES to the router. Let the printer find the router.
You should not have to do anything to the printer.

After the printer and the router meet each other and exchange formalities, the printer will show up on your network in 'network places'.
Install the printer as a network printer. This may vary with which OS you use.

The printer should now be on the network. Tell the wizard to find a network printer.

Or, it may be better to do  the CD of the printer maker and install the network printer using the CD. The manual implicates that  as the right way rather than the Windows Wizard.

first connect the printer with the wireless router with the ethernet cable , this will give an ip address to the printer
then print a test page from the printer itself to know the ip address
then go to the computer and search for printer or manually add the printer!!!It should be noted, also...that the drivers for the printer need to be installed on each computer that will be sharing it.

Solve : New problem with internet acess?

Answer»

So I have windows 7 on a dell with wireless internet that works fine....till a few days ago. For no reason, i could no longer  connect to my computer. It recognizes that the connections are available, but it can't do it wireless. The only way I have internet now is though a cable cord, which makes me realize that it's something wrong with my computer. I tried a system restore to before the problem SHOWED up, but that did nothing. I also tried looking at the boot menu at startup and flipped on and off the wireless internet connectivity abilities, which did fix my problem for a day, but not anymore. I also tried troubleshooting it through windows, but all they said is that i just can't connect wireless. I'm concerned that it may be malware or something else, and i've been scanning with everything I have, but I'd love some suggestions about what's causing this and how to fix it.
Thanks guys! What do you mean you've looked at the boot menu? Is this a laptop or DESKTOP? Have you tried reinstalling wireless card drivers? at the startup of the computer, you can run memory diagnostic and choose which drivers to run, and so on. And honestly, I don't even know where to look to find the software to reinstall it. The strangest thing is that now I found out that my computer is only having problems with my internet at HOME. I went to a friend's place and for some wierd reason it worked just fine. But i've already tried resetting my router and suchDo you have anything else to connect wirelessly? If you do, does it connect fine? Can you POST your router specs?

Solve : printing wirelessly to a wired printer?

Answer»

I have 3 pcs all connecting wireless and independently to the internet via a linksys router. Then I connected a wired HP printer via usb to one of the system and try to PRINT from the other system, it would not work.

I NEED HELP. what do i doHave you shared the printer?  http://duckduckgo.com/?q=windows+printer+sharingIs your HP printer network-ready?  In other WORDS, does it have an ethernet port for a CABLE which could be connected to your router?  If so, this is another way to share your printer among all PCs.  One advantage of this configuration, as opposed to having the printer attached to one computer and then enabling printer sharing in Windows, is that any computer can use the printer without any other computer being powered on.

Solve : Windows 7 PC, Vista laptop?

Answer»

Hey all,
Trying to create a shared folder between my PC whic is RUNNING windows 7, and my Laptop which is Vista, but i'm totally lost. advice is most welcome. Not much to it:

If this tutorial doesn't cut it.... Look around some more

http://www.ehow.com/how_6674296_share-folders-windows-7.htmlHere are some Microsoft pages explaining how to share files:
Windows Vista: File sharing essentials and Share files with someone
Windows 7: File sharing essentials and Share files with someone

This is how I have set up network SHARES in Windows 7...

  • Right-click the folder to share and click "Properties".
  • Click the "Sharing" tab and click the "Advanced Sharing..."
  • Check the "Share this folder" box, set the "Share name".
  • Click the "Permissions" BUTTON and set the permissions for particular users or groups.
  • Click "OK" on the windows that were opened and the network share will be set.

I have not set file sharing in Vista, but it should be very similar.  I HOPE this sets you on the right track.  Let us know if you have any other questions.

Edit: Ah, you beat me to the post button, joy division. If my quickie post doesn't cut it I'm sure yours will, which is probably more thorough.  both tutorials look great, but i think they're running on the assumption that the PC and laptop are already networked, which they are not. i apologize for no being more clear in the initial post. Are both computers accessing the Internet through a router?Wanna see a great video?

Networking home computers running different versions of Windowsimportance in GETTING a network is that you are using the same connection and router... then activate share folder you want to share..

Solve : Extending wireless signal?

Answer»

Where I go to church I have one building that has comcast with a wireless access point. I want to put a computer in another building about 100 feet away. The computer has wireless network CARD. Could I use a BRIDGE to extend the wireless signal to the other building?I had a similar need a few years back and ended up using a wi-fi extender that connects to a computer usb port. My need was for a laptop to be used in cases where a wi-fi location was available but distance of reception was variable and could be a 100 feet or more. For the most part i was satisfied with the result. However i ALSO used the device at home where i had the further ability to enhance the reception. I did this by purchasing an antennae to be attached to my router (which is connected to my DSL modem) for  stronger transmission capacity than that which came with the router. While this may achieve your desired result a few things additional to consider are that the ability of a wi-fi connection to be readily receivable is NOT only governed by distance. The intervening materials of construction can greatly INFLUENCE reception as well. For instance   air is better than glass which is again better than bricks. As an example if you are using your computer inside the building where the wi-fi connection is located it will be stronger than if you are outside even at a shorter distance because of construction material obstacles. Here is a parameter of search that will produce a great deal of EXAMPLES of what i am referring to "wifi antenna extender". This is the link to the one i have used. http://www.hfield.com/

A bit of time with Google, and you'll find a LOT of these things.
Try: "wifi parabolic"   and then "wifi antenna extender"

A friend of mine did the parabolic reflector.   Just used some thin cardboard and tinfoil.  A totally flimsy awful looking thing.... but he saw a LOT of improvement.  His shop is well over a hundred feet from his home.

Good luck with it.

Rob is correct. All newer USB ports are 'backwards compatible' with older USB ports. i.e USB 3.0 will except USB 2.0 and USB 1.0 / 1.1 etc. . . however, USB 2.0 cables can't work at USB 3.0 speed if they are plugged into a USB 3.0 port. There is a FUNDAMENTAL difference between the cables. Just an FYI.Thanks to all of you Rob/ reddevilggg / linux 711.you have HELPED me once again .(you never fail).

Solve : Hotmail 1 IP-adress 2 different people????

Answer»

Hey I'm extremely confused because I investigated the sources of 2 contacts on hotmail and they both had the same Ip-adress( they told be: http://aruljohn.com/info/howtofindipaddress/#ipdetect ) The 2 contacts are different people as one is my best friend and the other one is a rather unpleasant type.
Any help please? If needed I could send the source codes of both last emailsWhat we call IP is really IPv4, which, for some time now, does not identify a unique point on the Internet. The effort is underway to go over to IP version 6. When that happens, every network DEVICE in the solar system will have its own IP.

Until then, you have to find some other WAY to be sure of who your friends are.
But why is in my best friend's Ip the Ip of that bad guy...It still doesn't make any sence, couldn't it be possible that the bad guy HACKED my best friend's Ip?
I know my best friend irl but that bad guy could be an internet stalker so that's why i'm worried it could be.Received: from wilson.telenet-ops.be ([195.130.132.42]) by BAY0-MC1-F45.Bay0.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.4900);

OK. So we can mark this problem solved!
no? Why is the bad guy's Ip adress in the source code of the good friend, I still don't have an answer...I already told you. Having the same IP only  means that.
It is like two people living in the same city.
Hundreds of people can have the same IP.
Internet IPs are often shared. Only big companies get to have their own IP.

Let me put nit this way.
If your friend has his very, very own private IP, he is paying about $20 a month just for having his own private address. Ask him if he does that.

Who is telling people that IPs are unique to every man woman and child on the planet? There are not that many IPs to go around.

Quote
An IP address is a unique number that every computer connected to the internet is assigned. Learn about IP addresses and the different classes of IP addresses
The above statement is false. It is poorly written, misleading and useless. Therefore it is false.

An IP is an addressing scheme that is part of an complicated system of  directing  data packets over the public and private networks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address

Call your friend on the phone. Ask him who he his.
still...it would be way to random that those 2 people have the same Ip-adress.
but thanks for explaining No, not at all random.

Here is simple test.
http://geek9pm.com/
http://help9pm.com/

Theses to sites might nbe the same person. Or maybe not. Hard to know by just then IP address, both have the same IP! (Looking at NUMBERS of the IP v4 notation.)

Any e-mail SENT from the SMTP server for those two sites will carry the same IP. ( we are still looking at IP v4, which only has four groups of numbers.

Does this help any? Any IP by itself is not always an unique ID for a place on the web. Not with the IP v4 system you are looking at.

EDIT: Here is a way of making FireFox show the IP of the page you are watching. http://browsers.about.com/od/46/gr/showip.htm

Solve : Internet down monitor?

Answer»

PLEASE help!!.  I am running Sling Boxes on my home network. When I am not
home and the modem or router goes down, I need to make power off reset.
Howe to build a monitor with logic output to recycle the power when internet
is down without using a computer. Cant find anything !! (interesting project)How about fixing the problem?  You shouldn't need to hard reset a router/modem just because there was a broadband/cable problem - it should spring back into life of its own accord.  That fact that it isn't doing so suggests there's an underlying problem that needs to be resolved. The cable modem and netgear router are on line for over 5 years now, and sometimes go for 8 month without the need for power reset.  But when it hapens, and I am away sometimes for 6 month, then I loose my link, and the cable company can't "see" the modem anymore. When I finally get back I reset the power of modem & router (on the same power strip), and all is OK. ?It would be useful to know whether it's the modem or router that goes down and if you can browse to any web interface or connect to either device using telnet (from the LAN) while the condition exists.  If you answer that question, it may be possible to create a suitable script.Thank you for your help !  I presume it is the Router, but I am not really sure. The modem cable solid light was not on, but flashing sometimes.  The send data on the modem did not blink. I could not access the internet from the LAN.  The Router lights did not make any sense.  I have a Vonage Internet Phone device connected to the LAN. Without using the phone this device is "calling home to vonage" to establish a connection. It has a green LED which was flashing  (it should be solid if internet connection with vonage server is successful).  Seeing that when I got home: I just power reset Router and Modem together without any further investigation, and in about 30 seconds the cable light was steady, and the router lights where normal, and internet was back on.  Perhaps waiting til I am away again to let me down!     Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.    As a last recourse I could use a land line phone with an answering machine and a tone decoder with relay to recycle the power.  But there must be a more elegant way of doing that ?Okay - what modem and router are we dealing with (make and model)?NOW I AM IN TROUBLE !  I don't remember what cable modem I am using at my place up north, and I am not there to check.  The Router is a Netgear MR814 v2.  I am willing to replace any of them if the need be. Here is an alternative solution from another application.
Many so-so DEVICES do not have good internal monitoring.

A piratical alternative is to have a mechanical device to reset the device at certain times even if not needed. How often do you nse the connection? What is your time window? How long do you need it in one day. How long could you wait for nit in one day?

I am thinking of an electrical clock with a relay that will TURN an appliance on and off on a schedule. Sometimes used for hot water HEATERS. Set it up to be none for three hours and break for fifteen minutes. Ask your electrical supplier for such a device. Or make one yourself.More about a schedule on/off thing.

Automatically Turn On/Off Computer at Specified Time

You could use your PC itself to turn the router and modem on and off. When the computer goes off, there is no more 5 volt power on the USB ports. That power could drive a small relay that can switch AC power safely. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 29, 2012, 12:49:03 AM

That's not a bad idea at all.  Even cheap devices have a granularity of five minutes - so the router and modem could just be off for five minutes once or twice a day.  Hey presto, scheduled reboots.  I like the lateral thinking here.As for an automatice reboot of the router, this is the kind of thing I was thinking of: http://www.digitalservitude.com/?s=worklog&m=permalink&x=automatically-reboot-netgear-router

That would require testing and suitable scripting components.  I imagine you could do this with PowerShell if you don't have a suitable Linux system.Scheduled reboots is an option. I could set it for every other day at night, and I could live with that.  The 5V from USB would be great, but if internet is down the windows computer is still on ?   I was looking at some ARDUINO modules. They use ADMEGA micro processor, and have an ETHERNET adapter.  Was thinking it could send a query to some website, and if no reply,  maybe it could be programmed to pull output bits low to activate a relay ??  Think I need to do more reading !  ANY IDEAS ? hifly
Let's recap what you do and what you need.
You are at a location where you can not get back to your target PC in a reasonable amount of time, like over one hundred miles. You  use some kind of remote access to get to your data. Your Home PC is left unattended, maybe in a secret vault.

Once in awhile, maybe once  every three months. the system locks up and it is almost always the Modem/Router, not the PC. Sending a tech out to your vault is not a desirable option.

An alternative would be to use clad storage, but that has its own limitations and issues. The PC is already setup for the work you do.

If the vault has a Land Line and the PC a  56K modem with auto-answer capability, you could set it to answer after ten rings.

The router modem may or may not have a trouble light. And if lit does - How do you know it ever works? The router may have a software reset. But how do you know it works when needed?

You do know that a physical  reset  works. Power interruption on all routers is treated as a real physical reset. In some cases it is the only way to 'UN-freeze' a rare electronic lock-up. Rare , but very documented.

I still think a crude mechanical  timer is the sure thing. Plain old gear-driven clock times have lounger service life than almost anything you might think of.

But a electronic device and a relay can also be very reliable. Persona experience. I had some set up to scare COYOTES away from my sheep. Every ten ministers, 24 hours a day weeks at a time until the wet-cell discharged. Recharge the cell and up again.  Didn't have solar cells back then.

Do not depend of a software reset of the router.

Fortunately, in your case, battery power  is not needed. Apparently you have then PC set to restart if the power goes off.

Geek-9pm,
My remote vault is not accessible, and there is no computer connected only cameras etc.  A hart reset SEAMS to be the safest solution. I could use my laptop with battery backup but it won't give me an output bit for a relay. I was also thinking to interface to one router or modem light (opto coupling or direct connecting inside but need to do more testing to see what light is reliable and useful. No, dedicating a laptop to do simple job is not a wise decision. the laptop is worth more  than a new router router and continuous use will shorten its life.
When and if the modem or router fails, there is no device, like a light,  that proves that it has failed. Please don't ask., I have been into this before with remote unattended equipment.

There are two often used solution:
A. A external  independent  deice , mechanical or electric, turns off the device once a day. Even a photo cell could don that. Turn of at sunrise, on a sundown.
B. A  external watchdog timer. Once every ten minuets the modem or router must send a status to the watchdog. Just a simple 100 millisecond pulse or stream to do a the  restart of a simple 556 dual timer. The watchdog will other wise turn off the modem/router with a very  reliable standard relay for three minutes. Then back non for another ten, waiting for a  pulse. Any kind of pulse, even very frequent. If is stops for ten min, the watchdog trips the relay.

Sorry, I don't have a diagram in my library of stuff, but it has
published nears ago somewhere. Just find some light or  TTL logic that does a transition at least once every ten minutes The watchdog timer can be built for longer timeout, if needed. One hour is near the limit with simple components.
Maybe somebody else can find "Watch Dog timer with 555 or  556 IC"

Solve : Sites not fully Unblocked ( ISA )?

Answer»

Im trying unblock sites that have links and images that are from different sites. Since I don't know what these other sites are when the website is unblocked its jumbled and has no images.

Is there a way to get a list of where the site is getting their images and external links?

example: www.whitepages.com is a site that has images and links hosted elsewhere

*** I am also using Internet security acceleration as my web filter. Everything is blocked unless allowed accessNot sure what h you are asking.
You want an image that is blocked?
It it is blocked, why? How do you know you want it if you don't see it?
If you know the name of the image you can search for in in Google.
Do you need a high-quality copy of the image? That may involve copyright right, you need permission from the owner of the image.

Low quality images are easy to get. Just copy  with you favorite screen-capture program.

FYI: Many sites block links to images, this puts a load on their bandwidth. Put the image on you own web space. Then you pay for the bandwidth. Even so, you should credit the source.

Does this help any?
ehh a little bit i GUESS ... Im using ISA as a webfilter on our server so that my employees are doing their work and not facebooking all day. We have it set up where all sites are blocked unless they are on our "allow list."

Say if i added www.whitepages.com/* to our allow list the users will be able to get to the site. How ever the site is jumbled with out any images and it makes it impossible to navigate the site. This is happening because the site is pulling its images from another host ( website )
In order for me to make the site usable I WOULD have to know all the other websites that are being used on that page and add those to the allow list as well ( if that makes sense ) So the site would no longer be jumbled.

Im wondering if there is a way of finding all these websites used or posted on a website :/ Quote from: CrzyTech on March 27, 2012, 03:04:59 PM

Is there a way to get a list of where the site is getting their images and external links?

In most browsers, right click on the page and click view source.  Search within that page for all the IMG tags.  They will contain the URLs of the images.

Which version of ISA is it?  TMG has the Microsoft Web Protection Service, which is pretty GOOD for URL categorisation.I misunderstood the problem.
Your best bet is to  hire an outside source to help you  with your filters. It can be very TIME consuming to do it yourself. Unless you  can really barrow it down to just a few sires you want.

My point is that many business firms have had this same problem, thus there are consultants  with software and databases that do it for your. company. I don't know the details of how it works.

Here is a free trill from Open DNS
Enterprise Web Filter:Free 14 Day Trial

Not sure, but I think Google offers this kind of service to clients for a small fee. The service lets you specify which sites are OK, and they do l the rest of the hard work, such as making sure images are included in the good stuff.

Solve : Connection not using full potential?

Answer»

I just bought a HP desk top.  Pretty top of the line i thought for Walmart.  But I'm not a computer guy really.
I have a p7-1003wb   Can someone please tell me how to utilize the download capabilities to their full extent.  I am trying to down load MW3 and i have a DSL ISP.  I do know that i don't pay for a very fast connection but i have two desk tops and a lap top always ruining oh and two Iphones all using the data and even after i turn all them off exec pt for the NEW one  i still can't download over 155 or 160 KBs.  So my question how can i tap into that bandwidth?  Is there any way to do this? and If so how much is it going to cost me to be able to do this?  Someone please help me out on this one.  Most likely what's happening is that all the CRAPware (trial software) installed on the system is slowing it down.  OEM computers always ship with a bunch of programs installed that people don't usually use.  All those programs usually run at start up too, so assuming you even make it to the desktop, and one of the programs don't crash the system, its performance, including INTERNET will be bad.  You could have FIOS and it wouldn't do you any good with all the software running on that new computer.

I could GO on for a long time on how to optimize the OS for speed and it would take too long, so just google "how to speed up your computer" and you'll get a million hits...  btw...  160 KB download speed for DSL isn't that bad.  It equates to about 1.2 Megabits per SEC, and standard DSL only gives 1.5 - 3 megabits per sec, depending on how close you are to the DSLAM

Go to speedtest.net

and post your download speed after a test..Here's my results...  I use ATT U-verse   Best they have in this area..

This is from my Mac Book Pro on wireless..

i I standard DSL speed for download.
For greater speed, you pay more. Sped is related to price.

Exceptions are in some areas where fiber optic is on the street where you live. In that case they can give you all the bandwidth you would  want. But with fiber, the price is determined by other factors. But still very pricy anyway. We're suppose to get 12 Megabits down and 1 Megabit up on this fiber, ADSL(2+) We pay 25 per month (plus tax and FEES) with a 250 Gigabyte cap

I've done a lot of downloading from my Technet subscription and Netflix(ing) and still haven't gone over.  Of course, I can only take so much babysitting of downloading from MS, so I try to spread it out a little

This is a little better, having switched over to N (MIMO) with security disabled (no WPA2) Quote

Solve : One computer ostracized.?

Answer»

Hello all-

Here's the situation:  For the past few days, my LAPTOP has been unable to access the internet through my router. It connects to the router, supposedly, but no internet access.  In addition to not accessing the internet, I cannot access the router configuration PAGE (NORMALLY 192.168.2.1).  What's odd about the situation is that my laptop can access the router page and internet completely fine.  To make it more odd, my desktop can access the internet through my phone's wireless hotspot.  This is the extent of my knowledge. It doesn't seem to be a router issue, and it doesn't seem to be a wireless adapter issue.

Any ideas?

Most appreciated.Have you reset the router?Yes, I've reset the router / modem / COMPUTER / all the normal go-tos.
Router AND modem ??   Are you sure thats what you've got ?I'm not sure if I implied they were the same thing. Yes, I have a separate modem and wireless router.  The make and model of which can be PROVIDED if someone would find that helpful, although I'm leaning more toward a windows setting issue that might be causing this.  But, like I said, I'm not sure.

Solve : Slow/lost Internet connection?

Answer»

I frequently have problems with very slow or lost internet connection.  Not sure where to start, but I'll give as much info as I can think of and go from there.

I have DSL.  I also have a wireless router, D-Link DIR-628.  My old router died on me about 6 months AGO.  I did not have nearly as much internet connection problems with my old router.  I have a computer plus 2 DirecTV boxes directly connected to the router and numerous other devices that connect up wireless, 3 laptops, Iphone, Itouch, Kindle, and wii.  The symptoms I have are web pages not loading at all or loading very slowly, message on DirecTV that internet not available to name a few.

When I do have a problem, I can always fix it by unplugging the power cord from both the DSL box and the router and then plugging in the power back to the DSL box and then the router.  Problem occures on average once every other day or so and some times I have to reset mutiple times a day.

All the computers are running Windows XP, NT, or 7.  Also sometimes on one of the laptops I get a message about conflicting IP's.

I'm looking for help to TROUBLESHOOT what the problem likely is and how to correct it.  If anyone can think of additional information that I can SUPPLY to help troubleshooting please let me know.

Thanks for anyone willing to help out,

Tim Quote

Are you using static IP on certain computers, devices instead of DHCP?I checked all the computers and they are set for DHCP.  Not sure how to check other devices such as Iphone, DirecTV, etc.

As I was checking the computers for DHCP, the laptop I was on lost connection to the router.  I checked my other laptop that was on at the time and that one had also lost connection.  I than checked my desktop which is directly connected to my router and that computer did have internet access.  However by the time I checked the desktop and came back to the laptop, the laptop had reconnected to the router.

So that is an example of what has been going on although usually I need to reset DSL/router to get reconnected. Don't know if this info will help at all or not. Quote from: thammondwis on February 23, 2012, 09:50:22 PM

Is there any other router you could try? Just as a test.

Solve : file and printer sharing in two routers?

Answer»

GoodDay!
i have a question, if it is possible?

i have a modem and 2 routers.one of my router1(4 port) connected to a modem(1port) to share INTERNET and router2(4port) is connected to router1.. in router1(there's a 3 computers and router2 connected) and router2(have a 4 computers)

my question is how to share PRINTER from pc1 on router1 to pc5 on router2? it is possible in file and printer sharing? Is Router 2 configured as an access point to Router 1? Does Router 2 assign IP addresses to its clients through its DHCP server or does it use Router 1's DHCP server?
Computers have to be in the same subnet on a LAN for them to communicate with each other. The important trick is to have only one DHCP in the system.
Example:
Let's say router #1 does DHCP and is the one right onto the modem. There router HAPPENS to be at
192.168.1.1 and the mask is
255.255.255.0 and the DHCP ranger is
192.168.1.2 up to
192.168.1.51
and the PCs all shall get LAN IP automatically.

(Note: the DHCP range may vary. look in the DOCUMENTATION.)

In that case, I would set the other routers this way:
192.168.1.47     #2 router
192.168.1.48    #3 router
192.168.1.49    #4 router
Or just anywhere in the high end of the DHCP range.
For that matter, it works almost anywhere inn the range.
The PCs normally get the lower numbers.
Bear in mind, once you change the IP of any router you have to remember what is was if you ever want to log in again.
Does this help?

Solve : Cannot connect to one specific website?

Answer»

I am having a very frustrating problem with accessing a particular website. The problem: one single computer on my network cannot access this website, while every other computer/device on the same network can reach the site just fine. The computer that cannot reach the site is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

- "The connection has timed out. The server at www.ee.hawaii.edu is taking too long to respond."
- Pings to the site are successful, but no browser can open the site (I assume this rules out a DNS issue, as pinging RESOLVES the IP address of the site)
- Even trying to access the site using its IP instead does not work
- I have tried IPCONFIG /flushdns command, as well as other netsh reset commands
- If I boot off a gentoo linux livedvd, I can reach the site fine. It is just from this windows installation I cannot reach the site
- Other computers connected via ethernet (static ip or dhcp assigned) to the same main router can reach the site, as well as laptops/phones connected via wifi/dhcp
- I do not have windows firewall enabled at the moment, nor any other firewall software installed
- I only have MSE antivirus actively enabled, but have disabled this and still has no effect
- I have boot into safe mode with networking, and still cannot reach the site
- I have run virus/other scans using MSE, malwarebytes, superantispyware, ESET online scan. Nothing of significance has been found, and am still having the problem
- Windows hosts file is clean and in tact, no entries besides the localhost entry
- The browser I use is irrelevant, I cannot reach the site with firefox, IE, chrome
- Have cleared numerous cache/temps, even with CCleaner
- I can browse any other site just fine
- I have been able to reach the site from this computer with current OS in the past

Anyone have any ideas? Quote

It has to do with some settings in windows.
Try this: Make a new user account with normal PRIVILEGES. Log into that new user and see if the behavior is the same.

It may be a 'parental control' that blocks the site. Try using a proxy to see if that makes a difference. But hard to imagine that anybody would block http://www.ee.hawaii.edu/ for any reason.

Did you reset your router and modem?

Every time I've encountered this problem myself and with people e-mailing in it was resolved by resetting the router and modem (e.g. unplugging waiting and plugging back in) would highly recommend trying this as suggested.I have done most of the obvious, like rebooting the computer, modem, routers (have even started with a fresh router firmware flash)... I have no parental CONTROLS (can't even be set for current ADMIN account). As I said, it is not limited to any particular browser. If I create another user account, I still cannot access it from the new account. I can access the site through a proxy.OK. It must be the hosts file.
Code: [Select]notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hostsThe above command will edit the hosts file of your system.
This allows you to get to a site that does not have a DNS entry. Or it can be used to divert or sidetrack  a site. Or block a site.

It is not. I have already stated that I have checked the windows hosts file. My computer can resolve the IP of the website just fine... (128.171.61.135)

Do you mean something in the linksys router I am using? I have tried reflashing the firmware back to a clean original state, would this have done as you stated? The problem still persists. I should also probably mention, that the computer plugged directly into the DSL modem with no router used also results in the same thing, unable to access this specific website. You might wanna ask a malware expert in the Virus and Spyware section to check on certain logs. They have special tools to review your system. You should also ask the IT Dept at the website if they can throw any light on it.Are you the owner of the network? Do you have full control?
Time to review the facts.
It used to be OK.
The problem is only with
www.ee.hawaii.edu
But what about a base  that site? Like http://hawaii.edu
Other PCs on the network do not have a problem
Same PC with Linux does not have the problem
Same PC has the problem direct from modem.

It is NOT in the hosts file.
You verified the hosts file role? I mean you are sure tree hosts files is working. There is a prank where the hosts file can be placed in another place. Or even renamed.

Solve : How Do You Make XP3 Home Detect An Internal Dial-Up Modem??

Answer»

First better say to the Administrators, am re-posting the above question here, because when posting it yesterday, somehow all my PC stats ended up at the top of the page, and way down underneath all of that stuff were my questions. So am here going to hopefully get everything the right way round:

I used to have a Compaq Data Fax Modem in my PC, and when reinstalling the XP3 Home OS (have done a lot of reformats/reinstallations) the Modem was always detected automatically by the OS.

For reasons that won't be gone into here, the Compaq ended up being replaced (by a computer shop) with a "PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP"(it uses Driver Version 7.53.0.0), and when eventually another OS reinstallation was attempted (being technically illiterate it's the only way I can get a clean system again when things go wrong) a strange thing happened during the "Internet Connection Details" part of it, because the panel that always previously (with the Compaq Modem) came up wanting you to write your Area Code and Dialling Prefix - it did not materialize!

When the installation of the OS was completed, I tried to get it to connect to the Web using the "New Connection Wizard" but it didn't work:  the dial-up Modem Icon in "Network Connections" refused to materialize.  Tried to get Windows to detect the Modem by using the "Troubleshooting" thing in "Phone And Modem Options" (the "Modems" panel was blank - no Modem listed) but to no avail: Windows could not "find" the Modem.

Sent it to the computer shop and they returned it with the Modem working properly, but have not been able to find out by examining the Settings what they did to get Windows to recognize it.

Can anyone please describe how they were able to do this?

I installed XP3 Home again "alongside" the existing one (the "Internet Details" part was missing again during the installation) to see if this time an internet connection could be made from it, but it's the same story: cannot get the OS to "find" the Modem/cannot make the Modem Icon materialize in "Network Connections".

Am hideously bewildered and also worried: my "original" OS is partially crippled from having gotten a bit carried away EXPERIMENTING with file-cleaning programs but cannot afford to send it to the workshop again (they are expensive!!!); however am unable to reinstall the OS because of the Modem situation (the inability to locate it).

Will very much appreciate any help/advice on how to manually detect/configure a dial up internet connection, just as the workshop Tech must have done.

Finally, why did XP3 (Home) always automatically detect the Compaq Data Fax Modem no problem?

Solve : Laptop won't automatically connect to wifi?

Answer»

Hello everyone

A little background:  Netgear N Gig wireless router feeding two netgear gig switches.  Two desktops (HP) wired, network printer wired, server (HP) wired, network media tank wired, WII wired, ACER laptop wireless, two HP laptops wireless, gateway laptop wireless.  All have permanent assigned I.P. addresses, and all can connect / talk with each other and the Internet.  Having trouble with one HP Laptop.

HP G71 with wireless N built in, and it is apparently run by HP WAN assistant program.  If I boot the computer from scratch, it will automatically connect to my router right off, no problems.  If I close the lid and put the computer in hibernate, upon restart it doesn't connect to the router right away, I not talking about fails to connect, it doesn't try to connect.  At this point I have two options to connect, I can leave it alone and wait (sometimes up to 4 minutes) until it decides to connect, or I can right click the icon in the systray and tell it to connect to a network, choose my network, and then we are go.   This laptop has had this annoyance since new.  My wife's identical laptop does not do this, it always connects right away.

I have a feeling it's in the HP WAN assistant, if I uninstall that will windows 7 automatically manage the wireless??

I have made sure that my home network is set for automatically connect under the manage wireless connections tab,  I have deleted every connection there but my home network too.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks,  BobBob...

Before we get too technical...see if there's an update to HP's Wireless Assistant.  If so...make sure you update that software...and try again to connect from wake.

If this doesn't work...there should be a setting somewhere in the Wireless Assistant program to return control back over to Windows...letting Windows manage the network, INSTEAD of HP.

If that doesn't work...try the following...

Try shutting down the HP WAN Assistant through services.msc.  I wouldn't recommend uninstalling it at this time.  Just stop the service to see if this remedies the problem on slow boot from wake.

If this doesn't work...you can uninstall HP's Wireless Assistant and let Windows manage the wireless connections.

You'll have to start the Wireless Zero Config service to return control of the WAN back to Windows...again, done through services.msc.  Just select Automatic, click Apply, Start...and then OK.Get rid of the HP WLAN programs and use the built-in Windows one. Always works. Will try your advise guys!!  Will let you know!

Thanks!!UPDATE!!  There was a newer version on HP wireless assistant, but that didn't help.  Since I had the downloaded FILE I uninstalled it and so far so good.  Now I do automatically connect in about 45 seconds after coming out of hibernation.  Calling this one solved!!  thanks guys!!

Solve : Specific Hotspot Problem?

Answer»

I don't have me own internet, I mostly use my school computer lab and then would use the free Arby's hotspot near my house if there was anything I needed to finish. The wifi always worked great for about 6 months(very fast and it never disconnected even if I was there for hours). Recently the wifi has stopped, meaning that when I connect to arbys and the little white full bar sign comes up saying I'm connected, I still can't open a working internet browser. And yes I've asked if the wifi is plugged in and even asked a random stranger using the internet if he was having the same problem(no). The wifi works at every other hotspot I've tried. The only thing I can come up to connect LOSING the wifi is that I started a powerpoint class and used a flashdrive to transfer my work from the school computer while I was using the Arbys hotspot. I admit to watching a torrent once or twice on said school computer, and am thinking that maybe I transferred some kind of error onto my computer. Or it could have been a result of the PC tools thing I used for a while and recently uninstalled or restarting the computer when I thought I might have had a virus from a bad website. Does this make any sense? Has this happened to anyone else? Quote

Don't talk to strangers cause they're only there to do you harm...

You can't "transfer" errors but you can transfer malware. Do you have a virus scanner and if so, which one? Has it been set to perform a full scan? What does it find?

When you say "internet browser" do you mean Internet Explorer?
Have you tried Firefox instead?

What happens when you go to start -> run -> cmd and then type ping ixquick.com ?

Can you still receive email? (If you're using an email client)

Have you tried throwing out all the unused wireless profiles and creating a new one?

What does it say when you type in ipconfig /all in the cmd prompt?
Quote
Does this make any sense?

Your story is coherent if that's what you're asking. I'd add some paragraphs every now and then.

I've tried firefox and google chrome, nothing works. I tried the Windows Defender scan and a free trail of Avast where I did quick, full, and boot scan and nothing came up.
I have to wait until I can go back to the specific hotspot to do the CMD, but is there a way I could copy the image and paste onto ANOTHER reply(screen image?) (What I mean if there are 20 rows of results what should I be looking for?)
Also, what Does it mean to throw out a wireless profile?
Thanks Quote

You can press ctrl + printscreen, open up mspaint and then paste it into there. Save it as a jpg. then upload it to photobucket or something similar and then use the img tags to post the image. Or just give me the link.

Alternatively you can select all the text and copy it in the command prompt. Just copy the one for the wireless interface.

I don't actually have any wireless devices here so I can't reproduce the exact steps but if you double click on the WLAN icon it should take you to a screen where you see all the wireless LANs and then on the left-hand side there should be a button that can take you to a list of profiles that have been created for each wireless network that you ever connected to.

This may help: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Create-or-modify-network-profiles#There are a COUPLE of other things beyond what RAPTOR is suggesting (although in my opinion they are valid suggestions). When you are at the Arby's location do a search on what actual locations you are connecting to. It may be that it is defaulting to another one nearby that is not as strong. Also another thing you can do is to place your mouse over the icon for the connection and select repair. I am not as convinced that my second suggestion will be of much use as you are getting a connection just a poor one but it cannot hurt anything to try.
In my opinion it has everything to do with your connection at that location as you do not experience that problem elsewhere. truenorthThis is what came up when I did the CMD:C:\Users\Hannah>ipconfig/all

Also for the 1st time the wifi in other hotspots started acting strangely(turning off most programs like Avast, Adobe, Java, the firewall) so I reset and these are the programs that were removed :
Nmap 5.51
SDiManage 1.0.0
WinPcap 4.1.2.4.1.0.2001
Do any of these look malicious or are they just stuff that Windows Update installs? If you do not get a quick and painless fix for this.. Here are my recommendations.
A. Go into Arby's  and buy something and ask about the hotspot. Be a customer. Have your laptop with you. Let them know you have some issue. You do not need to mention that you are a cyberspace bigger. Just present yourself as a customer. See if they have any suggestions. Expect them to tell you there is a new, more secure sway of doing a log in and it only lasts for one hour for current customers.

What I am saying is they have then right to make it hard to get into the hot spot if you are not a customer.

B. Boot a Live Ubuntu CD. Any Mal-Ware on your system can not get into the Linux system because the Ubuntu CD does not need anything from the hard drive.
Quote
Nmap 5.51
SDiManage 1.0.0
WinPcap 4.1.2.4.1.0.2001

if you do not know what these programs do and you are the only user of these laptop, it would probably be better to remove them.

They are not malicious in nature (however, I am only familiar with the latter) but if not used properly, they might cause strange behaviour as they do all seem to relate to networking (and security)

the ipconfig /all command tells me that you are getting all the necessary leases from the router. You are connected to the wireless network it would seem.

Have you tried PING ixquick.com when you're at arby's? What is the result? (try a few more domains that have HIGH up-time)

Could you run a scan with Microsoft Security Essentials?

Have you removed the wireless profile for Arby's and recreated?

You did not answer my question about receiving email through an email client.

Solve : I want my WEP back.?

Answer»

Recently I bought a new router. And also I have to install XP again on another partition on the laptop as a panic tool.

In this process, somehow the wireless network software does not want me to USE WEP. It is either WPA nor noting.

I don;t understand this. If I go into the rooter, I fan force sit to use WEP. But then when a new user wants to log in, I get some dialog about ownership of the router. So I have to enter another code. Then it wants me to set up WPA security.

Now I understand there is a need for security, but what about my FREEDOM of choice? I want my WEP back.

Some other THINGS on my network can only use WEP.
Has this happened to others?
This laptop is running XP
The wireless in this laptop is the Intel PRO Wireless with the Intel software. It is the software that does not want a WEP.The Intel Wireless config utility is a headache... you can use the one that comes bundled with XP:
http://oit.pdx.edu/use-windows-to-manage-wirelessThinks, you got it! Good link! Mark this solved!Solved in 8 MINUTES.

Could be a record...I always use the utilities that come with the OS. Always found the software bundled with WLAN NIC's to be worthless.

One of the few thing Windows does right straight out of the box; WLAN configuration.

Solve : gateway 4530gz no wifi?

Hi I was hoping that someone could tell me how to active the wifi on a gateway 4530gz.  I have looked for a button but no button found.  I have a wireless modem from quest but it doesn't show up in wireless networks.  Anybody want to give me a hand...........thanks.....two-dogs    Quote

4530GZ Notebook Specifications

Wireless Ethernet interface features (Factory installed option)

Integrated Intel PRO / Wireless IEEE 802.11g Mini-PCI Card

Antenna: Uses factory-installed diversified internal antenna
    Operating channels: 11 selectable channels
Security: 128 and 64 bit WEP encryption
Operating Frequency: 2.4 GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11g)
    Maximum Data Rate
    54 Mbps (IEEE802.11g)
    11 Mbps (IEEE802.11b)
From Gateway site.I have attempted FN+F2 at the same time and nothing happened, I also tried FN then F2 with no change, still no networks found in range,  Also network ADAPTER is intel pro wireless 220bg network connecter anything else that I could try?FN+F2 is a toggle for the radio. A light should come on when you hit FN and F2 at the same time.
In addition, the Network software must be installed and the device has to be enabled.
Which gives rise to some questions.
Did you get she unit used?
When did it stop working?
Was the unit drooped or damaged?
Can it work using Ethernet?
Have you tried a USB wireless device?
Do other computers find wireless networks in your office?
Ok this is not my computer it is a buddy of mine and we are trying to hook up to the wifi in a rv park.  I tried to hook up my computer to the network (my computer to his computer) but it is not seeing it in the network.  Funny THING is it doesn't see any other networks in the park and mine does.  I am running windows 7 on my computer and he is running xp.  It will hook up with a either net to my modem but not wireless and my modem is a wireless modem.  Any thing else I can tell you let me know......thanks...........two-dogs
Ok I see what you meant by Fn it is a key right next to ctrl I hit that and the F2 key with no results.  I also have an error when it starts up and says "Generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  And boy this thing runs slow, so slow that I have to reboot it to do any thing.  WELL I hit the 2 keys again and now it keeps rebooting had to start in safe mode.......this sucks been working on this all day..........two-dogs   Sounds like Windows needs to be reinstalled first of all.

Anyhow, if you can get it to work you should check that A) the drivers for the WLAN NIC are installed and B) the WLAN is enabled in the BIOS.Only thing I found in the bios was under advanced was Wireless power setting and I changed it to on.  Where in the bios is it located I will try and update the drivers.  Why is it when I hit the Fn with f2 key then I get the blue screen of death and get a loop and keeps rebooting on its own.   Ok I tried to update the driver and got svchost .exe application error so whats up with that..........two-dogs    Quote

Doing a repair on one to two bad files may be doable. But the chance of fixing lots of bad files is not so good.

Is there a directory named i386 on the drive? Forget that.
Does the thing have a recovery partition? It should.

Restore System to Factory Default

Does he have backups of his personal stuff?
He may need to order a recovery CD from Gateway.
No, no backups or recovery, also could not get it to do a restore, all points failed.  I did however did git it to update it took 21 updates I don't think he has ever updated it.  He can still use it to surf the web and get his emails, and if it is updating most of his files are ok.  He will as you said have to get a restore disk if he wants it to work faster.............thanks for your help and if you can think of anything else drop me a line............two-dogs   The link above, "Restore System to Factory Default", is not about restore points. Did you read it?Well now I have done it, I was running dail-a-fix and know it won't even boot up.  Now I get the system32\ntoskrnl.exe, now I will have to repair windows.  I have been trying to make a boot disk but not having much luck, so now I just created another problem, so much for fixing s__t............two-dogs

So does the connection apply to both WIRELESS and wired connections? Are you running a firewall? Are you running anti-virus? Quote

First thing is to connect to a reliable network that you regularly connect. You might have numerous network profiles that needed to be removed from different open networks.

Ah, the yellow bang!  Would that possibly mean a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it?   Hey man check if your adaptor does not conflict with other device for resources (IRP is always the suspect), if not try to update your NIC drivers or rollback if you have MADE any changes lately.

Have you verified that the switch is not damaged?

With a switch, not a router, static IP address is required. Unless DHCP  is available.

On eBay you might shop for a:
Linksys EtherFast 8-Port 10/100 Wired Router for under $50 used in good condition. On the computers that are displaying the message"limited or no connectivity" from the icon for the connection on the task bar beside the clock  right click on the icon. That fits the case where on PC works and the others do not. The modem does not go to the switch, it noes to then first PC. The failure is between then first PC  modem and the switch.
Using static IP just masks the problem. But indicts the issue is in the bridge. Ned to fix the bridge.
The four PCs can not get to the modem, which does the IP assignments.

This is for Windows XP:

Solve : Losing connection to internet by way of router?

Answer»

so this has been happening for about a month now and i've done extensive research trying to find the solution without much luck.  basically i'm losing my connection to my router at really random times.  i haven't changed any settings lately or anything like that.  my modem has been fine through this whole thing so i'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with my local ISP.  i have been connecting/disconnecting the router and that works but sometimes its for a day and other times for an hour.  no pattern.  i've changed a couple of things and got these suggestions from here:
http://besthubris.com/computers-internet/wireless-network-drop-connection-windows-7-error/

i've ran troubleshooter and hasn't found anything.  one thing i noticed on my routers web page was the LAN ip address.  i don't know much about these things so i was wondering if that ip address is supposed to match my computers ip address or if it has it's own specific one.  i just changed a setting in that link about an hour ago so don't know if it will fix this problem but from what it says i don't hold much hope.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Dynex Model DX-WGRTR v1000

also i checked for firmware updates on my router and there wasn't any.Who made the router? The modem?
Is this DSL or Cable?
How old is the modem?
How old is the router?

Almost new hardware does fail. And it has a lot to due with your ISP. Many ISPs will offer their customers equipment that is marginal to hopefully get a better profit. They are wrong. Customers don't like it when equipment that should last for years breaks down in a few months.

Replace both modem and router with a single unit. Expect to pay $100 for a good one. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 28, 2012, 08:02:57 PM

I have some doubt about the validity of that statement; perhaps it's true for some ISPs but definitely not all.  Some ISPs provide the modem as part of the package to the customer and, if the router fails, the ISP replaces it.  So, providing unreliable modems would just increase the cost of providing support to the customer and create bad PR (Public Relations) for the ISP.

I'd be more inclined to advise just replacing the router.  If you still have problems with an unreliable connection, then contact your ISP.

By the way, are you connected to your router by cable or are you using a wireless connection? Yea my ISP provided my modem but not my router.  My modem is obviously run through the router and then the router connects to my PC.  I have a laptop that I connect wirelessly to the router as well as both of my smartphones.  I ended up doing one of the suggestions on the website I listed and if it changed anything it's minimal.  I'm still losing connection but instead of 5 times a day it's more random.  So far today no problems.  I restarted my router last night and has been fine since but it will go out eventually.  From a lot of things I've read on the net it seems like this could be a Windows 7 issue as opposed to a hardware one.  Then again that isn't always the case from what I've read so I don't really know which way to go.  Should I start with replacing the router or do you know of any settings in 7 that might do the trick?  If you need to know what setting I changed I can look it up.  Don't remember offhand.  I will chime in again.
In windows you can do the whole network setup again and see if that MAKES any improvement. Maybe not, not, but worth a try.

Have you tried isolating the problem from a single  computer connecting first? Then allow one machine or device until the problem occurs. Are you saying TURN off wifi on my laptop and phones and then turn one on at a time to see if one of them knocks the router connection out?  No I haven't but it never really occurred to me that it would make much of a difference.  I'll try it later this afternoon and see if it works.  Right now I'm on the longest connected streak I've had since this started happening.  Haven't lost it since my last post.  I mentioned something in my first post I think about the IP addresses for my PC and router.  I just built my PC about 3 months ago and it obviously was given a new IP address.  The IP address on my router's homepage is not the same and I didn't know if the router had it's own address or if it was supposed to be the same as my PCs.  Haven't done a lot of network stuff so little things like this aren't in my wheelhouse.  It seems like a very cheap router as it was made for Belkin. On top of that, you're also using wireless with many devices. I'd bin the thing and buy Linksys. Get cable installed.

Did you check for firmware updates, though? There's a version 1.01.08 available.
Make sure all your devices are set to DHCP ... Once it's stable, you can start manually assigning IP addresses.Stop bad blaming the router!
The problem is more likely the modem and the ISP.
He did not say what modem they gave him. The low-end modems have a failure rate above than most routers If That is the case, the ISP already knows about it and is WAITING for him to say something.

He says he is losing his connection to his router. Not modem.

If you are losing the connection to your router, it's your router or your computer. He never said how he tested the modem. Nor did he give the model number of the modem or its history. If the modem does not have self-diagnostics, it can take over a day to verify that it works. He seems to to to be a novice. He may have assumed the problem was from the router. An maybe it is. But if ,this had not happened before, there is little reason to think it would be some settings. Why would the settings change?

Pardon me for meddling. Just I think it is the modem.Actually, I was the one meddling. It's just that I saw "belkin" and "wireless problems" in the same post. Quote from: Raptor on March 07, 2012, 10:54:51 AM

Fair enough. Wireless is always an issue. The OP ends to tell us if there is a situation where things are better with all devices working.

There is a situation where connection will fail after the first computer is turned off. Some ISPs look for the main computer as a form of ID for the user.

This is why routers have a 'MAC clone' feature.
Not knowing this you can run in circles.

Also, some ISPs will not like it if you have too many people on your connection. Or they may even forbid you for having extra devices, but not enforce the rule in a polite way.
Sp it is helpful to know who the provider is and what policies they have.
alright so here's the info on the modem.  it's an arris touchstone telephony modem. i am about to go to their website and see if there's any firmware updates for it.  i already checked for updates on the router and there wasn't any.  yea it's a cheap one but it's lasted 4 years so i can't really complain.  definitely got my moneys worth.  so i'm thinking the easiest way to see if it's the modem or the router is to UNHOOK the router and run the cable modem straight to my PC and see if i lose connection.  you have a better way?  i'm not just going to blindly assume it's the modem or the router or both and go spend a BUNCH of money replacing them.  more than likely my ISP will replace the modem but that's not the point.  right now it's still connected going on two days so even though it's stable i'm sure it will loose it again soon. You got it! That is the sane way to troubleshoot. Direct replacement or elimination. You can save some money by getting just the router. Once you are sure it is the router.

If you are running a server I WOULD suggest using a static local IP for your server so you can port forward to it easily. It all ready has a static ip.  I also, all ready shifted through the manual an the average person wouldnt be doing somethin like thiscan someone really HELP :/I noticed in your router settings there is an option to DISABLE the DHCP server. Perhaps that may work...I disabled DHCP,  still the lease seems to last for five minutes.  Not sure if this is the source of the issue or not though Quote from: Ryuk on February 11, 2012, 01:31:37 AM

Solve : syncing problems over network?

Answer»

Hello, I have an unusual problem and I hope Ive ASKED for help in the right SECTION of the forum? Computer "A" win7 pc, computer "B" and "C" xp sp3 pcs. Computer "C" RECENTLY had major hardware update, including motherboard, HDs, and ram? Correct drivers installed for all new hardware and pc works well? I regularly sync a large folder from "A" to "C" but around the time (after I think) of the upgrade this wont happen. The program just crashes after comparing ok. I use several freeware sync programs and thy all crash when trying to update the folder on "C". "A" will sync ok to "B" and then "B" wil sync ok to "C". I can access, copy, delete, do everything else to and from any pc on the network. I know its easy to blame the software, but the same (several ones) that wont sync from "A" to "C" will sync from "A" to "B" and vicky verka, and they most certainly used to work any which way.

Thanks for reading and any help appreciated This may not be much help. But it is the best I can do.
Think of 'sync' programs as being partnerships.
An exchange of information  resolution two entities is feasible.
But a mutual exchange between three becomes impossible. It is against the laws of physics.

At some point in time one of the three must become the 'King if he Network'. What  King has is the norm for the other two. It works like this:

Let A be the King.
The rafter B must sync with A, the king. But never talk to C.
Also, C must sync with A, but never talk to B.

That's it!

This means that any revisions made o  A are the most important. If you delete a file on A, it will have to come off of B and C eventually.

When I say B can not talk to C, that even miens they can not exchange anything. Ever.

You should limit the MATERIEL to sync to documents and photos, videos and things like that.

Here is an article that provides another explanation.
http://www.tgrmn.com/web/kb/item85.htmLet me be a little more specific
My win7 pc used to sync with either of my xp pcs using free file sync, and folder sync, and several other freeware programs. I am not concerned about syncing to any 2 pcs at the same time, although free file sync used to do this QUITE easily.

I have a "borrowed copy" of vice versa which will sync to either of the xp machines like the freeware progams used to. Vice versa works perfectly to any pc. Because its borrowed I would like to remove it and have the freeware programs do what vice versa does, and do what they used to.

With respect your explanation does not apply in my case, because I only ever want to sync from a folder on pc A, to a folder on pc b, and then to a folder on pc C. Pcs  B, and C are never required to be source folders, only targets.

The fact that win 7 syncs to xp B, but not to xpc, and then xpB will sync to xpC has me wondering if its a permission/shares issue, but as I said all other network functions between any pc work perfectly? and vice versa works perfectly??   Perhaps a permission issue. Not sure.
I wonder why you've never used Windows 7 file sharing features instead. Quote from: jason2074 on March 01, 2012, 10:11:34 PM

I wonder why you've never used Windows 7 file sharing features instead.

In particular what features do you refer to, bearing in mind i can access win7 folders and files from the other xp pcs, and i share a printer connected to the win7 pc. Thanks for the responseITS FIXED: Turned out to be a gigabit switch. I swapped it for an old 10/100 switch i had and immediately the free sync software programs worked perfectly, so its a dicky switch or some incompatibility with the gigabit switch?

Thanks to all who tried to help what looked like a bun fight.

Solve : Weird internet problem, urgent help!?

Answer»

My internet barely works. It's weird, like for skype and gaming it works fine, but when I browse the web it rarely opens the page first time, I have to keep on refreshing. I tried trouble shooting it and it came up with this:

Your computer appears to be correctly CONFIGURED, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.

I have my dxdiag files, should I post that up?

basically I have a windows 7 64 bit
gtx 580
i-5 - 2500 k CPU 3.30 GHZ 3.30 GHZ
8 gb ram

and I'm connected to a wireless network by my network adapter. Hey there,
DNS not responding means that when you are going out to the Internet, looking for your DNS server, the server has not responded. That means that either you have the wrong DNS server address, or maybe the server is actually down. ANOTHER possibility is that you have a virus that could be re-directing you elsewhere.
Firstly, check your DNS settings and see if there are any issues there that could be causing this. Try this LINK below to troubleshoot some DNS problems

If needed, move then laptop close to the router and use another CAT-5 cable to laptop.
Reset both computers.
Do the network wizard on both machines.
Turn on print and file sharing.
At least one folder has to be network shared on each machine. Public is often used.
Reset both machines.
Wait awhile for the machines to find each other.

Does that help?

Yes, reboot or restart the machines after making changes to the network setting. And yes, test it  with both on the same router using the Ethernet cable.
If all goes well, advance to wireless connection. MUCH easier to don it in two steps. Wireless has it own hurdles.

Wow! Never seen that before. I am giving a LINK to another forum. See if the check list for that issue works for you. Then please come back here and let us know.

http://forums.cnet.com/7723-19411_102-384793/can-t-connect-2-windows-7-computers-via-homegroup/  I just  think I need to forget about it I have messed with thing long enough, and  if it is this hard to get two computers together through windows well, I give up! I read the link you GAVE me and I think I will never get this solved without really screwing up so bad that I won't even be able to access my own files, so at this point forget it and thanks for the help you did give me maybe micro-soft will come up with something that will make this thing easier! but I doubt it!Even though you may have decided to negate setting up your home network...hopefully, you may find this link helpful.  It basically describes all the steps you need to take in order to setup you home network:  Start here to set up a home network in Windows 7I will tell you what I did get before deciding not to go any further, I did get to "see" the other computer in the network, now when I clicked on it it asked me for a username( I was very confused what that was) and a password confused about that too!   anyway I tried the one the computer gave me and it was wrong (??) and I could not go any further, that was when I had decided to quit, now my questions that need answered are as follows: what is the username?? and what password do I use the user account password or what, and also I had shut down some services trying to speed up my computer,
and I think this has something to do with why I am having problems getting this going, like the homegroup provider service (?) I used the homegroup troubleshooter and when it said it didn't know what was wrong I clicked on the advanced link and got that message, and also I am confused about the folders I can share, the public folder (scares me to death. makes me think I am opening everything to the internet) and the media sharing that confuses me too, I understand Home network, that means the computers I have at home, but the public thing I am worried about, I don't want my computer to be a open book on the internet, and I think that doing that is opening a door to my computer, so that is where I am at now and part of the reason I am having so many problems with this. so any help with terminology or anything would be appreciated . rece,

I understand your concerns.  Setting up home networking really isn't that difficult.  Unfortunately my Windows 7 skills are not as good as they should be.  However, I will assist you as best as possible until someone else intercedes, okay?

I need to ask you a couple of questions, too.  First of all...what program did you use to speed up your computer?  Did you use this program on both computers?  What kind of users do you have on each computer...limited accounts?  Administrative accounts?

I remember you said something about connecting wirelessly.  You may want to read this:  Setting up a wireless network

As far as making folders public or private...

Making a folder or file public means that those on the network have access to that file or folder.  They can view it or make changes to it...depending on the access you give them.  Making a file private on a home network is just the opposite...it is not viewable and no one can see it or access it.

One thing to KEEP in mind...a "wired" home network is more secure than a "wireless" home network.Upon further investigation...I came across an article which explains password protected sharing in Windows 7.

This feature requires one to do the following:

  • Open the Control Panel
  • Open the Network & Sharing Center
  • Select Change Advanced Sharing Settings
  • Expand Home & Work Network
  • Scroll to Password Protection
  • Turn off Password Protect Sharing

This is, more than likely, the reason you are getting a prompt to enter a user name and password for your home network.  If the folders and files on a networked computer can be viewed on the network, but not seen...then that computer may have enabled password protected sharing.

Another good read:  File Sharing EssentialsI didn't use a program to speed up my computer, I said I disabled some services, to speed up my computer, and again what is the "username"? is it the name of the computer or what is it? I don't understand what to use for the username?

and yes I password protected the sharing because I was unaware who would be seeing them (public vs home) thanks for the links they help me to understand networking I admit I don't fully understand itThe user name and password would more than likely be the user name and the password of the person on the network whose files you are trying to access.you mean the login for user account or what?

How many routers? What type of router? ADSL or cable? How many computers connected? 1 router (Linksys cisco), ADSL,2 computers are connected. Just the wifi is not working.I think both your ADSL modem and Linksys Router are trying to perform NAT. Only one device should be doing so.

I'd suggest that your router does it, see if you can disable NAT on the ADSL modem. Are you sure your modem is not a router? Im positive that I have one router and one modem. How do you disable NAT ? Quote from: Dnang3l on January 25, 2012, 02:15:42 PM

Read the manual ... If the devices are capable of NAT, it's in the manual. If not, just go looking for an option that says "Enable" or "Disable" and "NAT" (Or Network Address Translation.)

I asked them already and they said I had to contact my router service. They won't help me because they want money and like I said I'm broke. Quote from: AlwaysScrewed on February 08, 2012, 04:13:29 PM

I guess I'm screwed then. AGAIN.

I don't understand why I ABSOLUTELY HAVE to have a static IP.

Maybe I will have another little "chat" with my ISP about this idiocy...

That's just one of the many advantages of broadband.  I highly doubt that they will change their policies just to appease you. Quote
This is the IP that I need to be changed and apparently it's coming from my router.

A static IP from your ISP or set from your router or network adapter? They are two different things. But based on your post, it LOOKS like you are using the same IP address configured on your network as static instead of dynamic address. Quote from: jason2074 on February 08, 2012, 05:21:35 PM

Is there a way I can reconfigure my network as dynamic address?!As Quantos has been at pains to POINT out, the IP address in issue is your external, ISP-assigned IP address.

Please note that having a static IP address is NOT a security issue.  Perhaps you could explain what your security concerns are so that we could address those appropriately?

Solve : USE SSH or SCP?

Answer»

Hi,

I am not able to find any way to use SSH or SCP with a password option. I created an SH script in which I used lftp but LFTP was not available on the server them am asked by the administrator to use EITHER SSH or SCP. After studying around I realised there is no way to use these with Password.

Is there any way to use SSH or SCP with password, user, host.
Please suggest me something in this...

Thanks,Absolutely.  FileZilla on the Windows platform allows username/password LOGON for SFTP.  On Linux/Unix, simply SPECIFY the relevant username before the HOSTNAME like this: [email protected] - you will be prompted for your password.

Solve : PC Any Where Setup?

Answer»

I have made a machine too run a remote application.  Thing is that I need too be able to access it from any where cause, I wouldnt have my laptop with me all the time.  I installed ver 5, but, I dont know how to setup for remote access.  Why not try the FREE version of LogMeIn? https://secure.logmein.com/I may have FOUND a BETTER alternitive.  Still how do you setup ver 11?http://us.norton.com/symantec-pcanywhere/
Version 12.5 is already out, and it costs... $236.16 for a license for 1 PC?!? I could buy a netbook with that! I guess it was meant to be used by large organizations, which would license hundreds of PCs at one time. But since you already have a copy on hand, if you follow the link above, there is an option to "Get Technical Support" and here are the manuals for pcAnywhere v12.X: http://us.norton.com/support/productdetail/manuals.jsp?pvid=pca_12

I use logmein.com for all my personal remote COMPUTING needs, and it has always been more responsive than Teamviewer, the standard M$ RDP, and many of the ALTERNATIVES out there.Kay, thanks.  I was looking for more of someone to guide me threw though.  Im useing something called ammyy which is a small remote app.  ~ 1.44 mb

Solve : Something Weird has happened?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an emchanines desktop that RUNS on Windows 7 and I have a weird problem. For starters i can't download anything without it stopping on random percentages. I have tried to look up some solutions for this, and FOUND none to have worked. My Internet connection is fine, but like i said i can't download anything. For example, i can't download Java or any search engines, etc.

Hopefully someone can help me.

Frosty94What model is your eMachines PC?
First suspect is your network interface card: try getting a cheap replacement

like this. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833114005The model is: EL1358Okay I see that it is a relatively new model, that it only has one PCI-E x1 and one PCI-E x16 slot, that it doesn't have standard PCI, and that the network card is integrated.

First thing is to troubleshoot the network card. Get a USB-RJ45 adapter:

Can be had for even cheaper than the PCI NICs ($7.99)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186164
and see if the problem persists.

If it is inconvenient for you to purchase this then LET me know and we'll troubleshoot other POSSIBLE culprits first by checking the stability of your system.Turns out the Internet Provider might be behind all this, going to give them a call tomorrow to hopefully sort this out Quote

You are right that your internet connection might be cutting out on you or some protection softwares features are interfering.

Solve : Geek Squad OnLine backup/storage?

Answer»

This is a question for an experienced user of subject.
Example - If I b/u files:  A, B, C, D.
Later I remove file C from my computer because I don't need it any more.
After that SOMETIME I run an other backup of my current files, now:  A, B, D.
What happens to the old C file at GeekSquad?
I assume it stays there, but now how can I easy remove those not needed files?
Do I have to remove all my backup and start a new backup from scratch that does not contain file I don't need any more? It's a big job.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
BertYou will have to ask Geek Squad about file "C" You need to find out how your backups are setup.

Backup Principles

Types of backups
There are three types of backups. The first is a full backup. This is a complete copy of everything that is to be backed up. It will use up the same amount of space as the files on the disk, before accounting for compression. Full backups are nice because you can just find the TAPE/file you need and restore it with no mess.

The second type is an incremental backup. Incremental backups only store the changes or changed files since the last backup, whether it is a full backup or another incremental backup. They typically save quite a bit of space since you aren’t storing many copies of the exact same files, and they are much quicker to process during the backup. The downside is that you’ll need the last full backup plus every incremental backup you made since then in order to restore the files. So restoration is more painful, and if there is a damaged tape or other media somewhere in the middle, you could potentially lose most of your data from that point forward. Incremental backups do require special backup software to track what files have changed and upon restore, to re-join the data from all the different backup sources.

The third type of backup is a differential backup. It is a middle GROUND between full and incremental backups in that it stores all files that have changed since the last full backup, ignoring any previous differential or incremental backups. That makes restoration much quicker than with multiple incremental backups, but it can require quite a bit more space and take longer to perform the backup.

Online backup services are a good way to have an offsite backup, but you must have a local backup too especially with LARGE files because it
might take SEVERAL hours to recover your data in case of a hard drive crash. I use MYPCBackup, the service is reliable and not expensive.

Solve : Linksys dma2100 media center extender connection problems?

Answer»

Hi all, MERRY Christmas.

Recently bought the above item and have been trying now for over a week to get my pc with vista home premium to recognise it on my wireless network.
In windows media center I keep getting the same response:

"extender not found,
setup could not find your extender, verify the following,
your extender is on and connected to the same network as this computer (switched on and connected to "a" network)
your setup key is correct (correct)
your firewall is set up to allow upnp discovery" (yes)

The extender tells me its connected to my network although I cannot download the latest updates on it as it tells me there is a connection problem, I recently downloaded network magic which telles me there are two other devices connected to my network, one is a squeezebox classic which was easy and straightforward to install on the network and the other I assume is the extender.

I'm USING a Belkin (N) wireless modem router F5D8633-4 v1000 connected by ethernet cable into my pc, it has a F5D8053 N wireless USB adapter.

I have Norton 360, which I've tried with the firewall, on ,off, completely uninstalled, windows firewall, on, off ,which is configured for use with media extenders. Network discovery is on.

I think I may have done something wrong somewhere in configuring my network but can't see it at all as I don't know enough about the subject. Hoping someone can shed some light on this as I'd like to bore my family with my HOLIDAY photos and videos over xmas
Thanks.
Husky, did you ever RESOLVE this problem ? - I have the exact same - thanks

For anyone else that may take an interest in this problem.

I have a Linksys DMA2100 running wireless with a netgear 802.11b router. For bandwidth reasons I want to run at 802.11g and so I have purchased a belkin F5D8633 router.  #

The DMA2100 connects to the router and obtains an IP ADDRESS but that is as far as it goes.
I cannot access the DMA2100 from Windows MCE to set it up. It does not appear in the list of devices that show in the "network" (but it does when used with netgear) It does not respond to a "ping" command. Anyone have ideas on the next step apart from throwing the Belkin router away ?
Thanks

Mike
