Solve : Hardwire Problem?

Answer»

I have an Acer Aspire 1830T-3425 laptop.  It WORKS wirelessly with wifi but for some reason it won't work when I hardwire it.  I know it's a problem with the laptop because  have hardwired my other laptop and it works fine.
When I open the local area connections, there are 2 listed.  One is: tap win32 adapter v9 driver and the other is: Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller.  The former has a red X beside it.  It says that the ethernet cable is not connected PROPERLY or is broken.  But it works fine on my other laptop.

I've tried everything from rebooting the laptop, powering off and on the modem and router, installing the driver, etc etc.  Nothing has worked.  Any suggestions?  It worked up until about a MONTH ago.
THANKS Quote

The former has a red X beside it.  It says that the ethernet cable is not connected properly or is broken.  But it works fine on my other laptop.

Knowing the Cat5 cable is fine when connected to another laptop, I'd say that the NIC on this laptop is probably damaged or dirty. What condition are the gold pins in, also if the cable locked into this RJ45 port without play or does the connector in the laptop wiggle at all?

Solve : "server not found" after telephone interrupts wireless router?

Answer»

I live in the UK and am running XP on my laptop. I use Firefox as my internet browser and have Norton 360 security installed. I recently got a new wireless router from my internet provider (TalkTalk). The router is connected to my phone line using the supplied micro filter (I have also tried my old micro filter just in case). I am pretty sure I followed the installation instructions correctly.
Whenever the phone rings, or I make a call out, I can no longer access websites even though the wireless CONNECTION between the router and my laptop is fine. I get the message "SERVER not FOUND" or "connection has timed out".
I cannot recall that I had this problem with my old router. Do you think the new router is FAULTY or is there some other problem?

Solve : URL forwarding at home??

Answer»

Long story short, I would like any and all traffic on my machine headed for google.com to be automatically redirected to either 216.239.32.20 or google.com/webhp?nord=1 .

This pertains entirely to non browser based queries. I'm not SURE how to set this up. I'm also not sure of the proper terminology in order to research and find solutions on my own.

I primarily use an OSX machine with WinXP bridged and running through Parallels. I would NEED the WinXP rerouted, but I don't mind if the OSX machine has the same modification.

I appreciate any help. There are a NUMBER of ways to do this. Most simplistic to most advanced in this order:

Edit HOSTS FILE on the Windows XP system to point www.google.com to the IP

Install and set up a proxy with redirection table added for www.google.com to the IP

Install your own DNS in which www.google.com resolves to this IP

---------------------------------------------------------

To have both the Mac and Windows resolving you would need to go with either a proxy or private DNS, or ( *I am unfamiliar with Mac, but edit a HOSTS type of file on the Mac to also PERFORM the same redirection as the Windows XP HOSTS file achieves )Also, does the OP use a router?  Some routers have tools built-in that do that kind stuff with the DNS.

Solve : Wifi Shuts Down Mac/PC?

Answer»

I have a DSL MODEM with a PC hardwired and multiple items hooked up by wifi (laptops, kids ipods, phones, ETC.).  At least twice DAILY the wifi goes down.  Nobody (not one of us) can use their wireless items, but my PC will STILL work fine.  If I go down and unplug the modem and plug it back in to reset it, it usually is fine for a few hours.   Can anyone tell what is going on? Thats what happens when a router gets old from its internal heating and use. And you seem to have a full household using it. Theres nothing you can do other than updating the firmware to see if it's a bug or simply replacing it.

Before I was recommending Cisco and dlink LIKE most people but now I recommend TP-Link business lines (not the 30$ consumer ones) exactly because of that problem. They are more resistant to aging.

Solve : Desktop shortcuts?

Answer»

Have just downloaded Google Earth on my laptop using Windows 8.1 and when I create a shortcut for the said program I am taken to the google homepage and not to Google Earth.  Therefore, I cannot access Google Earth from my desktop.  I am frustrated.  Can anybody kindly help me please?  My thanks.  JoeWell, I will try. The download may take a few minuets to finish. When done you GET a fresh copy of Google Chrome, like it or not.
Google Earth is not a offline program. You still have to have a internet connection for some many features.
You can find it in your programs and from there put a shortcut onto the desktop.

Does this help any?
Many thanks for prompt reply.

I have an internet connection through Mozilla Firefox and have had Google Earth on my desktop for quite some time, without having to be saddled with Google Chrome.  Mind you, I have nothing against Google Chrome, but I use the Google.co.uk as my home page and am very reluctant to change it, as I always get a hard time (as a 75-year-old pensioner) when I tackle something new.  For instance, using Windows 8.1 on my new laptop has given me several headaches until I felt a little confident enough to use it.

Only today I deleted the Google Earth icon o N my desktop ACCIDENTALLY, and when I retrieved it, it WOULD only open the Google homepage NOT Google Earth!

Perhaps you can help me out in some other WAY?

Gratefully yours,

Joe (GUZEPPI) from the Middle Sea.Take a look at my shortcut.

Solve : File and Folder Sharing Between Router & Wireless?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a router "Tp-Link TD-W9861ND" connected on my office Pc,
and Wireless Adapter connected on another Pc.
The internet works correctly on both computers.
I want to share Folder, Printer on both computers.
I'm using WINDOWS XP. can anyone help me?

Regards...  It is easier too set up networks non XP if you have a USB thumb drive.

Here is what I do if all PCs are XP. Start the Network Wizard on one PC. Answer the questions about the type of network. Name the work group as "WORKGROUP" and then at the last step prepare then USB thumb drive. Take ti to the others PCs and run the setup.

And if all PCs are Windows 7 it is just as easy.

But... if one is a XP and another in Windows 7, it TAKES a little more EFFORT. Is that your issue? Or are all running XP?

Forgot too MENTION. I n ave to locate the "Shared Documents" folder and turn on sharing. Do it for other folders as needed. And the printers have to be installed, if desired. Geek!, Thank you very much.

Solve : Handshaking, protocols and USB connectivity.?

Answer»

Hello guys, this forum was recommended to me by somebody and just wanted to enquire about something. I applied for a work placement with a company and have been asked to complete a task detailing what USB handshaking is. Ive talked about what handshaking is in networking and PROTOCOLS and why handshaking is necessary, but I believe handshaking in USB to be done via status packets as drivers tell devices how to communicate with each other and the protocols of USB are already defined, am I missing something or am I correct in my assumptions?

What I was asked to do is quite vague and to add substance to this I have gone off on a tangent as im not sure if theyre looking for something else or what,

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks,
JoeThis is only my observations, not from a textbook.
USB is both a hardware standard and a software standard. In Windows, you plug in a USB device and the system becomes aware taht a change has taken place. If The device is recognized as a device that has been USED recently, the device is installed as it was bedsore.Otherwise, the system software will probe the device to learn about its type. Each type can have its own protocol and date transfer rate.

Some possible types are:

Human interface, such as a mouse.
A keyboard that conforms to the common standard.
A mass steerage device. such as a hard drive
Some form of a network device, such as a wireless Bluetooth or Wi-Fi
An adapter the connects to a printer or scanner.
An interface e to an iPad, smartphone or camera.

Transitionally, the device MAY even provide the name of the maker and a model number.

The information can be stored in the computer upon the first time the device is used. Later, the system will respond more quickly to a devices had be already registered.
Bear in mine, this is no a textbook answer.
Does this help any?  Thanks for your reply geek, yes it does help somewhat. The device like you say can be probed and information about itself can be exchanged so ill include that. Because the role I have applied for is a trainee position in a technical department, I think they are looking for a bit more depth. This is why I didnt quite understand what they were asking as handshaking in USB does not seem to be of the same fashion as networking as in deciding what protocols are suitable to use as like you said it is both a software and hardware standard so the devices are somewhat similar in how they connect. What I have read details how when data is transferred in USB, that different packets are sent and recieved controlled by the host containing the payload data and the sync data and handshake/status packets, which is why I was thinking that handshaking was somewhat different and kind of a vague question. Here is a piece I have found from another website:

"USB Packet Types

USB has four different packet types. Token packets indicate the type of transaction to follow, data packets contain the payload, handshake packets are used for ACKNOWLEDGING data or reporting errors and start of frame packets indicate the start of a new frame.

        Token Packets

There are three types of token packets,
In - Informs the USB device that the host wishes to read information.
Out - Informs the USB device that the host wishes to send information.
Setup - Used to begin control transfers.

Token Packets must conform to the following format,

Sync    PID    ADDR    ENDP    CRC5    EOP

        Data Packets

There are two types of data packets each capable of transmitting up to 1024 bytes of data.
            Data0
            Data1

High Speed mode defines another two data PIDS, DATA2 and MDATA.

Data packets have the following format,

        Sync    PID    Data    CRC16    EOP

Maximum data payload size for low-speed devices is 8 bytes.
Maximum data payload size for full-speed devices is 1023 bytes.
Maximum data payload size for high-speed devices is 1024 bytes.
Data must be sent in multiples of bytes.

        Handshake Packets

There are three type of handshake packets which consist simply of the PID
ACK - Acknowledgment that the packet has been successfully received.
NAK - Reports that the device temporary cannot send or received data. Also used during interrupt transactions to inform the host there is no data to send.
STALL - The device finds its in a state that it requires intervention from the host.

Handshake Packets have the following format,

        Sync    PID    EOP"

I hope this explains my thinking a bit more and I really appreciate your input.

Thanks,
Joe
Interesting. I see no reason why a technician would nee to know this. There is no adjustment or pair that could fix a USB device that 'forgot' one of the protocols. There is no screw, resistor, capacitor nor jumper that wold alter the USB protocols.

I just saw this in a search:
Quote

USB 2 Analyzer only $875 - Teledyne...
How is this  for an answer:
USB 2 protocol requires a $875 tester to verify proper protocol and handshake  functionality.

Solve : Port forwarding on a pocket wifi modem?

Answer»

I have absolutely no idea if it is possible, but how would I go about port forwarding with a POCKET WIFI modem that doesn't APPEAR to have a built in system to do it manually.
I'm using a Telstra Pocket Wi-Fi Type:MF91 if that helps even slightly. With a Telstra pocket modem, you'll be lucky to stay connected for any length of time, so this may be a fool's errand.

I believe that no MATTER what you try to do, it won't work. Don't know if either of these is the true CAUSE, or just contributing factors, but since you're on a cellular connection:
1) You're stuck behind Big Pond's firewall, not your own
2) You're going to get an IP assigned dynamically, which has always been the scourge of my port forwarding attempts.

I presume this has some routing capabilities (ie, you can connect more than one device)? If you browse over to your internal gateway address, what type of security options do you have?I've looked over them, and it doesn't allow you to forward ports, which is why I asked, I don't have access to this device any more though, so I don't need to know any more, but I can't tell you what is in the internal gateway settings. I have looked at a couple of sources, and I am confident that the modem isn't able to forward ports. Thanks for the explanation

Solve : Question about phone networks?

Answer»

Hi,

I live on the west coast of the United States. A friend of mine who also LIVES on the west coast recently traveled to New York which is over 3,000 miles away. I called my friend on her cell phone in New York and asked her how she was doing. Here is my question. My friend's cell phone has a California (818) area code. So how was the phone networks able to track her phone to New York, and in a matter of seconds?

Thanks!

-cinque8All phones have a unique ID, and the minute they are powered they associate with the strongest or next available tower. Even before you place the phone call the system knows where the phone is. This is why cell phone batteries will drain faster when there is no signal strength to a tower or last for days when in a location where the signal strength is strong. As long as the phone is powered it ESTABLISHES connection to towers. This also allows for tracking of people for forensic purposes to see where people were based on triangulation and you can log the wereabouts of where a person has been based on the logs that the phone company keeps with the towers which is also part of the homeland security system now. Thanks for the reply Egghead.

I assume that if her phone was not turned on I would have got her voice mail, or it would have continued to ring. But since I placed the call in California, did the network check every tower in America (or the world) until it found this particular phone?

Thanks! If she just once had her phone one time away from home,   a record is kept of where she was while the phone was in idle mode.  And even if she did not even made or answered a call. The database is updated almost instantly about once every twenty  minutes.

If you want to try a little experiment, place a cell  phone next to some device that is sensitive to a EMF.  Example might be the speakers of your desktop PC. UNPLUG the speaker amplifier  from the PC, turn up the volume.  Next put the input near the cell phone, but not touching it. Wait a few moments. Soon you will hear the cell phone reveal its presence. It is a very quack burst  of digital code. Less that two seconds.

All phones have a unique ID, and the minute they are powered they associate with the strongest or next available tower. Even before you place the phone call the system knows where the phone is.

A cell (mobile) phone network is really a computer network. Towers (we call them "masts" in the UK) are nodes on that network. When a mast associates with a phone the unique ID of that phone is passed to the central computers of the network where it is stored (and logged) and when another phone user dials the number of that phone there is no need to search for it mast by mast. If the caller is on a different network the request is passed to the appropriate host network.

I never knew that US cell providers assign area codes*. In the UK, mobile numbers are usually given in the form 0 (which you dial before all nonlocal numbers) then a 7 (which means it is a mobile) then 3 digits which identify the provider then a 6 digit phone number. E.g. 07623 123456. Outside the UK you would dial the full international form of the number which is written without the leading zero with the country code in parentheses, preceded by a plus sign e.g. (+44) 7623 123456. Mobile phone companies in different countries have mutual AGREEMENTS so if you took a UK mobile to Spain and switched it on you would connect to whatever Spanish network your UK provider has an agreement with, but voice, SMS and data use incurs a sometimes heavy "roaming" charge. In the UK, we don't pay for incoming voice or SMS but when roaming these are billed. Within the European Union there is a maximum data roaming charge of 0.45 euros (about 60 US cents) per megabyte, reducing to 0.20 euros in July 2014, but outside the EU you pay whatever your provider charges. There have been widely publicised huge bills. Now that many younger (and not so young) people seem to live their whole lives on social networks this can be expensive. One UK woman went to Turkey in 2011 and used data roaming for 4 days. She forgot to switch off app updates and used Google Maps and used Facebook a lot, uploading lots of photos (probably shaky ones of the insides of bars). She got charged 42,200 pounds (67,988 dollars). This was reduced to 700 pounds (1,122 dollars) after she disputed the bill, and bills (that have to be paid) of 1 to 5 thousand dollars are not unheard of.

* Wkipedia to the rescue! "In many countries, mobile phones are assigned dedicated mobile phone codes within the country's telephone numbering plan. Some countries that do not use area codes (e.g. Singapore) allocate specific number ranges to mobile phones that are easily distinguishable from landlines. One notable exception to this type of assignment is the countries within the North American Numbering Plan (the United States and its territories, Canada, and much of the Caribbean), in which mobile phones are assigned subscriber numbers within geographic area codes, and are not easily distinguishable from landlines." I never knew that.
Salmon,

thanks for the post. In the previous posts that I have made on this forum, I have never received so much information! You mentioned that mobile numbers in the UK are preceded by a zero, in the US numbers outside of your area code are best preceded  by a "1", for example 1 (818) 444-5555, but the call will still go through without the "1". In the UK, each city or area has a "dialling code", for example the city of Bristol where I live has the code 0117. Brackets around this are optional. After that there is a 3 digit number which is the district "exchange", and finally a 4 digit number for my phone. Suppose my full number is (0117) 950 1234. From another landline within the 0117 code area you only have to dial 950 1234 to call me. You could use the 0117 and it would still work the same. If you lived outside the area you would have to use the full number. You would also have to use the full number from a mobile phone. Because of this people nowadays tend to give their full landline number, even to people who they know live in the area. London is so big the phone numbers have 8 digits now.
Very interesting reading.
Quote:
...Because of the popularity of fax machines and cell phones, far more telephone numbers were needed to handle the demand, and the decision was taken to add more area codes rather than increase the number length. Since 1995, there have been over 380 new area codes added in the North American Numbering Plan area. Some created area code splits (where an existing area code was split up into two or more new area codes). This cost businesses and others a lot of money reprinting stationery, business cards, etc. These were often greatly contested as to which area could keep the old area code (usually the largest city kept the old code). For instance, 305 was split in 1995. It used to serve both the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area. Dade County (at the time, now called Miami-Dade) kept 305 and Broward County (the Fort Lauderdale area) had to change to 954. Because splits were challenged so strongly, overlays were created when possible. An overlay was a new area code that covered the same geographical area as an existing code. This enabled people to keep their old area code, while new phone numbers would get the new area code. There have been over 75 overlays introduced since 1995.[3] ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbering_planDepending on where you live in the US, you may have to "dial" 10 digits or only 7 digits from a land-based phone to any other phone in the same area.  Even some numbers within the same area code are long distance.  From a cell phone, 10 digits is always required, even for local calls.  VOIP phones are also 10 digit dialing.

Land based phones, i.e. land lines, use virtually the same scheme as it was 150 years ago.  It was derived from the telegraph & used the same lines.  The infrastructure & technology has changed, but a 100 year old telephone will still function on the land line, pulse dialing still works.  The Central Office is still powered by batteries.

Telephone networks & the internet share infrastructures wherever they can, primarily fiber optic lines.  Cell phones are not 100% "in the air", i.e. they don't jump from cell tower to cell tower for 3000 miles.  You can make phone calls to Hawaii; there's no towers in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.  They have internet, too.  Think, "subsea fiberoptic cable", now.   TransAtlantic Cable back about 150 years ago for the telegraph.

Does anyone even know what a telegraph was, anymore?  The were in many of the old Westerns & figured prominently in the Civil War.  President Lincoln ran the War by use of the telegraph.  Now it's done over the Internet.  That's why DARPA funded the development from the beginning.

I was very interested by the work he did, and the quality of the teaching. They even learned about one of my heroes, William Henry Preece, who signalled across the Atlantic Telegraph Cable using a battery made by sticking two wires into a lemon. He did this to confound critics who thought that huge batteries would be necessary. My young friend was deeply impressed that all this happened 150 years ago.
School here is not so good.  I remember taking World History & American History, which focused on dates which events took place.  Pretty boring stuff.  The best teachers were always the math & science, the others couldn't even make their own field of expertise interesting.  They probably found it boring, too.

The University was even worse.  Professors ignored undergraduates, teaching assistants who can't communicate, an administration who could care less.  Unconsciously, the were preparing you for real life.

Solve : WiFi connected but no Internet!!?

Answer»

At our vacation house, we connect to the Internet via an UNSECURED signal which we think originates two or three doors AWAY from our place.  We only go there 2 or 3 times a year for a few weeks at a time  so this connection is good ENOUGH for US.  Here's what has STARTED to happen lately.  We open the browser IE or Chrome (doesn't matter which one we use) and although the computer shows that we are CONNECTED to the Lynksys (unsecured) signal it won't open the Internet.  This only happens sporadically though, sometimes for just minutes to a few hours, and sometimes for a day. Then all of sudden we can get Internet again.  All the while though, it shows that we are CONNECTED!!   What would cause this or what would the owner of this connection be doing that would prevent us from getting on th Internet??  Any help would be appreciated. The most likely reason it is not working is that the owner of the network no longer has internet access, but they left their wi-fi on. I have run into a few networks like this myself. If they are blocking you, leave it alone. If you try to get past it, it is likely that you will be breaking the law.No they DO have Internet access MOST OF THE TIME!!  We were just there for two weeks and 95% of the time we could get on the Internet.  It just goes out OCCASIONALLY!!  But, to repeat, we always get their Wi-Fi connection.  If you are stealing someone's wireless connection you have no right to complain when it does not WORK, and I think helping to do this may be against CH rules.

Now i did much things to try solving this like removing battery, restarting cmos, removing rams for copule of minutes i also flashed BIOS today, and the network card seems dead, i don't know how is this possible, lighting wasn't even near the house and it didn't hit the phone line...
So motherboard is: Asus p7h55

Hello, as I have searched I have not yet found a clear and concise answer to this problem, and I was wondering if someone could please help me with this situation;

on my NETWORK I have a pc connected through ethernet that KEEPS giving me this error message while trying to connect to the internet -
"local Area Connection 2 doesn't have a valid IP Configuration"
This is the list of things I have already tried;
-reset modem/network
-Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults
-Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults
-Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults

Windows 7
all other pcs on networked wired or wireless work fine
this is a new pc to the network however the internet did work fine the first few days
when I scan for devices in my modem, for this pc, it says the status is off

Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated, I am on day three or four of this ... I don't REMEMBER any more :/ Quote

this is a new pc

If this is a new computer you may have a bad network adapter etc. Can you bring it back and get a new one?
These problems dont normally happen just out of the blue, and if its new it may have a hardware failure with the network adapter. * Also if you havent DONE this already, I'd try a new CAT5 cable to eliminate a cable issue, however it sounds like a hardware failure on the computer if its new and was working and then stopped working and its offline according to other devices and you have gone into network properties to make sure its enabled and set to dynamic etc.I have tried a new cable, the pc is not new from the store, but new for me.

Solve : Make User Profile Local Admin on all stations?

Answer»

I know that a user can be added to the domain user group, but is it possible to add a user to a local admin group? so that they have full local admin rights on all workstations? I think our DC uses win 2k (just a guess though). If you create an admin account that is a roaming account, it can act as a local admin account when the workstations are off the net. But if you want to empower someone to be able to perform local admin access, but restrict them out of domain admin wide access, I'd set up a POWER user privileged account and in GP, I believe you can restrict the systems they have access to which restricts them to just the workstations vs being able to logon to servers and sensitive systems such as payroll and HR etc.

* For the local admin to work OFFLINE, the admin account would have to have been logged on to each workstation to populate the users or documents and settings section of each machine, so that it will recognize the admin in offline state. It is one benefit of a roaming profile for admin access that it can function offline once initialized against the DC. ** Also this hasnt been tested yet myself, but someone said once that you can copy the admin account profile from the initialized machine to other machines in the workgroup of systems to the users or documents and settings folder depending on Win 7 or XP etc and when you logon to the workstation offline it recognizes the local admin because the roaming profile was replicated to the other computers. We do use roaming profiles for most of the users (although not all I think). I really don't feel like making a new group though. LOL! If it was as simple as adding the user to an existing/default group, then I'd be down, but I'll probably just go with domain admin ANYWAY. I may actually just NEED to double check that my profile is roaming... :/ because I have set myself to local admin on several machines, but it never PERSISTS to new machines... so the DC obviously isn't passing it along.

Solve : Seemingly Sporadic Router?

Answer»

Not necessarily TROUBLESHOOTING here, just trying to understand something.

I have a DSL connection, piped into a combi modem/wireless router - call it "Net 1".

Coming out of that router is a CAT5 cable, plugged into powerline adapter.

Another powerline adapter is plugged into a secondary wireless router - call it "Net 2".

Sporadically I will lose the ability to get an IP from Net 2. From a Windows laptop, it will connect to the network but give me the little yellow exclamation point in the system tray and a "No Internet Connection" message; from my Android phone, it hunts for an IP then falls back to Net 1; my wife's iPads just don't sign on.

Now, I know these powerline things can be FINICKY, but before I move the bookshelf out of the way to make sure all my link lights are groovy, I did a few QUICK tests.

Here's where I want to check my thinking:

  • First, from any device, I look to make sure SSID 'Net 2' is visible
  • Then, while SIGNED on to 'Net 1', I steer toward 192.168.1.100

So... The first test, tells me I can see the router from outside the network. the second test tells me the network can see the router from inside the network (ie, the first goes from my laptop to the router's antenna; the second goes from the other router through the wires and into the port on the back o fthe router).

If I pass both those tests, the network is fine; it's the device that needs to clear its cache (or something), right?

(Others insist on rebooting the entire network. I say that's not the solution...)

Is there a reason to why the Net 2 router cant be acting as a repeater of Net 1 router and do away with the network bridge that you are essentially using over the power line adapters?

In every ENVIRONMENT I have tried to use them they are a royal problem and not stabile.

One good test would be the following from Net 2:

Connect to Net 2 and perform a persistent ping such as...

ping www.google.com -t

And watch the info from the command shell. Look for lost packets, failed responses as well as excessive latency which would point out an issue with either the computer connected via wifi to the router of Net 2 or a power line network bridge adapter issue, which is where I believe your issue is located in this non ideal setup. Yes, there is. There is one really, really good reason.

Solve : Wi-Fi for my Laptop not the best?

Answer»

So starting the other night, I noticed I couldn't connect to steam and any servers on steam games for whatever reason. Wasn't able to. I get on my laptop tonight, still cant connect, and have no internet connection to any sites. I can load google as my homepage but nothing else.

About 10-15 minutes ago, I reset my wireless router twice. Each time, no difference was made. My router is plugged into my modem so I reset that. RECONNECTED to my wireless router on my laptop and I still couldn't get a connection. Finally I restarted my laptop and I was able to connect to steam/internet sites finally.

While I understand that sometimes my modem/router needs a restart, my question is, why did I need to restart my ENTIRE laptop just to regain a connection that works? I had no trouble connecting to my router, but I couldn't get any sites/steam until I actually restarted. What is the make/model of the computer, and router to know what hardware you have and look for ISSUES?

There can be many reasons for this ISSUE. One of the most frequent issues is when your laptop connects to an unsecured wifi network that has a weak signal and the signal is gone and even though your wifi is a stronger signal it doesnt switch to your router vs say a neighbors.

The trouble begins because the neighbors router offers an IP address and connection that is different than that of your own and so there is no handshake to your router, and so you dont have internet.

Other scenario I have seen before was a person living in a condo and as chance MAY have it the client and a neighbor both bought the same model router, never changed the SSID, and both had not set up wifi security and both were on the same channel and so they had all sorts of problems with it jumping back and forth between 2 like routers configured exactly as they moved around their home and one signal strength was stronger than the other and packets were fumbled badly in that mess until I sniffed out the wifi issue with my netbook and the immediately locked their router down and configured it to be other than the neighbors config.

Other scenario was with older computers with wifi and blue tooth devices in the home or office which competed for the airwaves. But this only affected a short span of computer models when wifi and blue tooth were both new to the PC market. My laptop is the Acer Aspire V3-771G-9809 and I have a basic Belkin router. F7D5301 v1 is the model for the router.

Solve : IP Addressing?

Answer» What is the meaning of IP in this format, (190.100.0.0/16 I)?Is this homework?Assume OP means CIDR notation.
Was he paying attention in CLASS?
His question is about a form of notation commonly used. OFTEN we understand a range of addresses to be inside of a 8 bit range, like this mask:
255.255.255.0
edit: 24 bit range.
Which is a mask the says the range is from 0 to 255. But what if the range is larger? Fro example"
255.255.0.0
That means the addresses would be in a much, much wider range. It is a 16 bit range. Always looking for a way to make clarity  obscure, somebody decided that the expression:
190.100.0.0/16
would mean to stat at the base address of 190.100.0.0 and continue for all address up to 16 bits higher. That would come to:
190.100.255.255
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIDR_notation#CIDR_notation

Classless Inter-Domain Routing is the official term
At one time wit was also:
Clueless Insipid Dumb rules.

I thought IP was an awesome subtitled kung-fu movie? Wait: that was IP Man, my BAD.

But seriously,

Understanding IP's and the structure BEHIND them is hard to understand and can in no way be answered in a forum (although not bad Geek-9pm). When I decided to learn and understand all of this IP jibber/jabber, I hit the internet and found some lessons.

Solve : How to permanently solve DNS server problem??

Answer»

Hello,

I would like to know how I can 'avoid' the need to change DNS server address when I sometimes open my laptop.

I read a while ago that this happens because my DNS BECOMES corrupted so I would need to assign one manually - or the other way around ( it would be already manually assigned and I would have to set it back to 'automatic') which would give me access to the internet again .

But is there is a way to assign a manual DNS server ( Google's for example) without the need to change it back to 'automatic' in the future. A SORT of permanent solution?

P.S.  I do need to set it to manual because I need access to 'some' websites blocked by my ISP.

Thank you..What ISP do you have that is blocking websites? How do you know they are blocking them?Would an ISP really use that method of "blocking" a website? It would be too easy to bypass. My own ISP in Britain blocks various Torrent indexing sites and it does not matter what DNS server you use, they are still blocked.
So I looked at your profile and realized where you were at. The only way I know for you to be able to bypass those blocks would be to connect to a US server uisng a VPN connection.I believe I was misunderstood ...

I am 'able' to bypass the ISP ( Turkey btw and they are blocking websites like 4shared.com and others...) by simply changing the DNS server settings. The annoying problem(which happens when restarting or turning off the laptop for few hours) is that sometimes I am unable to access the internet unless I change it back to 'automatic'.

Thanks Going back to Chris' comment, Salmon, if you VPN to a US server, can you bypass the Brit-blocks?

Because, again, back to Chris' point, GILGAMESH, if you sign up for a US-based VPN (l like gotrusted, but check the google for "secure vpn services" and choose one you like), your ISP will not know what you're connected to. You'll pay for it, but it will give you what you need. Quote from: rjbinney on October 25, 2013, 07:02:16 AM

Probably. I use TOR which works just as well.

I have.

But I was not asking 'How' to bypass the block as I confirmed that I am '' able '' to bypass'' in the second post ...my question was entirely different to 'how' to bypass because I already did know how to bypass an ISP block and change DNS address.

Nevertheless, all you guys are talking about was bypassing a Brit block or if I was signed to a US VPN ( which I do not know btw- I live in Turkey-again)......

My question is totally something ELSE....but thanks anyways...

Just to add also - I was not the PERSON who created these and but I have looked at the time/date within the control panel and everything is OK. Also, there is a custom control panel for EASIER navigation.

Is the custom control panel causing the emails to make emails from the future?

ThanksWhat email system are you using, IE Exchange, a PHP based system, Hosted?
What system are receiving email on?
Is it all emails or just the custom ones?
Does it effect everyone?
Is the program creating the emails tied into the email system or is it separate from it?
IS the domain control time setup accurately and have you verified that the email server syncs time with the domain controller?

Solve : what kind of modem do I need to connect my tablet and PC without wifi?

Answer»

I'm sure the question doesn't make sense, but please let me explain. First I am in the military and travel a lot. Some of the places I go have no wifi, and SOMETIMES no cell recpetion. My hobby is djing, so in my downtime I dj for my own personnel ENJOYMENT on my laptop. On my tablet I have program (TouchOSC) that sends a wifi signal to the dj program (Traktor) I useon my laptop.

I am looking for something that I could use to create a wifi signal between my tablet and laptop.
Is this even possible? If so how, and using what equipment or software?

Unfortunately TouchOSC is not bluetooth or usb cabable.

The only real requirement I have is to keep any external equipment as small and portable as possible. If it does require external equipment having it be able to use usb power instead of it's own power source that would be positive.

Equipment
Laptop - Toshiba Qosmio X770
                Processor - Intel 2nd Gen Core i7 i7-2630QM / 2.0 GHz ( 2.9 GHz ) ( Quad-Core )
                RAM - 8.0 GB
Tablet - Samsung Note 10.1

Thank you for any assistance
You might be able to create an Ad Hoc Wifi connection between your Laptop and the Tablet, although I dont own a tablet to know if it supports Ad Hoc Peer to Peer type networking. Or lug around a small wireless router which offers up wireless connection with DHCP and connect between these 2 devices through the router. The good thing about routers also is that they can be powered off of a battery if need be. I have seen some mod hacks done to run them off of battery packs etc if you have no outlet available. I have seen them operate on voltages of 7.5, 9, and 12 volts to where people have used them away from the power grid or without a inverter to convert 12VDC car battery to 120VAC for the power supply which then converts 120VAC back to 7.5VDC etc, as well as power everything else off of the inverter which is rated ligh enough wattage to hold all devices power up concurrently.

Here is a cheap router that you can bridge the 2 devices with that also wouldnt take up much space. Just not sure of the DC voltage requirement of the device if you want to perform a battery PACK mod for it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833416001

For $15, I picked up one of these just a few minutes ago so that I can run 2 secure wifi networks at home, since we want to limit the times of day that our daughter can have internet access so that she doesnt fire up her computer at 2am and surf the web etc and then not want to wake up the next morning for school etc. Going to connect this to a outlet timer so that her wifi access is active only certain hours of the day, while ours is active 24/7 without interruption..LOL  A wireless router shroud do what you want.

Here on CH there is no Android FORUM. So I have to recommend you go to on of the many other places that have an Android forum.

Solve : Stolen Bandwidth (I think this belongs here instead of Spyware)?

Answer»

I use a Networx monitor on my computer and usually use LIKE 2-3 gigs a day, I downloaded a copy of Ubuntu to use, and then left my computer running while i went to sleep, When i woke up i looked at my Networx monitor and noticed it read a 300giabyte Download and upload amount since I went to sleep, this started like 30 mins after i left my computer idle and stopped when i started working on it, It shows me hourly usage and says that like 50-70 gigs an hour were being used, What happened? What caused this? and HOW DO I FIX IT?You must have a BLOODY good Internet service to transfer 50 to 70 GB in an hour without hitting a cap; or you have "All connections" selected.
Uhhhm ok but that doesn't answer my question,And why is this marked Resolved not its not resolved at all
Well. we do not know how you got the Ubuntu download.  P2P?
And we don't understand how you transfer 70 gigs in a few hours.
Both things cast DOUBT on the accuracy off your reported results. I'll try again, more simply this time.

1. What caused this:

If the machine hibernates, Networx can show some crazy data transfer figures after the machine wakes up again, especially if you have "all connections" selected. This is because of a known bug in Networx. It doesn't mean you actually transferred that amount of data.

2. How you can fix it:

You can try changing the monitored connection to your actual network adapter only. Or get a different bandwidth monitor application.

Solve : ssh into raspberry pi on via laptop on home network doesn't work?

Answer»

I am trying to ssh into my raspberry pi, which I have connected to my router/modem VIA an ethernet cable. I turned ssh on on the raspberry pi. It has LAN address 192.168.0.6. I tried to ssh into it via my laptop, which is connected to the internet via the same network, but that just hangs. When I ping 192.168.0.6 (my raspberry pi), I get an ICMP timeout. Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks! Quote

It has LAN address 192.168.0.6

What is the range of then router? I mean The IP range?

Is it from 192.168.0.50 thru 192.1680..99 or something like that? If so, the raspberry is outside of the range.

Not being able to ping it could suggest it is outside of the routers IP range.

This is a general computer FORUM. Probably not many people have one of these. You should ask on the dedicated Raspberry Pi forum:

http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/

Geek-9pm - The DHCP range doesn't matter in this case as the Pi has a static IP assigned so you ideally want it outside of the DHCP range.

Back to the original question:

What distro are you running on the Pi?
If you connect a monitor to the Pi, can you get out to the rest of the network from there?  Is the correct IP address indeed set?
You may want to check any firewall running on the Pi incase it is blocking incoming SSH connections.I am running raspian. I can connect to a monitor and wget files onto my pi. The ip address is set by the dhcp protocol by the router, correct? How could it not be correctly set?

OH, ok, I will check the firewall...you might be right about that.Idk why but all of a sudden my raspberry pi works....Thanks GUYS! Quote from: anon123 on October 08, 2013, 07:50:18 PM

Settings and then choose the Wireless icon.
Right-click on the network and choose FORGET this Network. Thanks for the reply Chrisxs5,
I had tried your suggestion. The only connection that gives me the option to "Forget this network" is my main local network ZFHL2. This is the one that I must keep. The others (screen shot) do not display any options upon right click. That is why I was wondering if there was a DOS cmd to do the job.
This information must be some where or there must be a way to stop the WLAN receiver from searching but I can't find it.
FRANK CI've been trying to find out how to do this FOREVER.  Your post reminded me to look again & I found a solution for Windows 7.
In "Network & Sharing Center", click on icon below (Unless you have changed it.  Probably not, because that's where you get rid of the names.)
Within:  Set Network Properties
Click:  Merge or Delete Network Locations.

My list contains items from when I got the laptop, 2 years ago.

In the pic you provided, that's the list of wireless networks it sees at the moment.

Show
netsh wlan show profiles
I only showed ZFHL2

Delete
netsh wlan delete profile name="TRENDnet"
It was not found

TRENDnet is persistent it remains in the list
 The others come and go
Frank CThis works for some & not for others:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/wifi-profile-manager-windows-8

It seems if the network is not within range, it can't be deleted.  Why MS removed this feature from Win7 to Win8 is a mystery.  Maybe it will be re-enabled in Win8.1, soon to be released. Thanks for the response Commando,
I did try the WiFi Profile Manager 8  with unsatisfactory results. It only showed ZFHL2. I thought that it would show TRENDnet since that one is persistent.
I keep trying, with diminishing hope, for a solution.
Frank CIt's likely that the TRENDnet is a wireless router within range of your computer.  The exclamation mark next to it, means it is not secure & you could connect to it.  If you connect to it, then you might be able to delete the profile.  But why bother, you might need it if you have a problems with yours.TRENDnet concerned me because I found this online:

It's only an issue if the TRENDnet camera belongs to you & is one of the affected ones.  Removing it from your list does not make it secure. Thanks Commando,
I will quit worrying about TRENDnet, I would still like to get rid of it.
Frank CAll that your computer is doing is listing all wireless networks that are available in its range and is completely normal operation.  Just because the network is within range doesn't mean that you are in any way vulnerable, just don't connect to the other networks.  All that it means when a network is displayed in that list is that the computer is within the range of it, if you went elsewhere and looked you would have a different set of networks - Only connect to the one you own and you won't have problems!

There is nothing to worry about with TrendNet cameras unless you own it yourself, besides, chances are that that TrendNet device is not a camera and in fact just your neighbour's wireless router (TrendNet make them too).

It is theoretically possible to stop the WiFi card scanning for networks but this varies depending on the card in use and there is absolutely no benefit from doing this, if anything it makes it more difficult if you need to connect to a different network in the future. Thanks camerongray.
I think we should close this discussion and chalk it up to my education. I did learn a lot.

Solve : LmCompatibilityLevel Didn't work?

Answer»

Heya,

So I'm connecting the 5th new Win 7 machine to our domain. Our DC is running Win S 2k I believe, so every other Win 7 machine I've SET up, I've had to set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1, and that has made it work fine. For some reason this time around it isn't working. I can access any of the servers, but not the subfolders (using explorer). Every sub-folder password prompts, which it isn't supposed to do once an authorized network user is logged in. Just to be safe, I tried this with several different user accounts including the net admin account, and not dice.

I did a bit of searching on the topic and found that there were many threads that did not resolve which were about this issue, so I'm still in need of a fix.

The machine is a slightly upgraded Dell Inspiron 530, and I just installed Win 7 Pro. (Only upgrade is to the HDDs and I think the GPU... but that may have been a factory upgrade.)

Anyway, if ANYONE has a clue how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated!!

I'll check back here periodically, although I'm in the CH chat channel a lot more often. We ran into this issue a few years ago with our Domain Controller and upgrading to Server 2003 was the fix. I wasnt aware of the Quote

Our DC is running Win S 2k I believe, so every other Win 7 machine I've set up, I've had to set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1, and that has made it work fine.

For the FACT that the 5th is having issues, can you rebuild this system clean to VERIFY that there is not a problem with the Windows 7 workstation itself or join another system as the 5th to see if your dealing with an issue server side where the 5th is a problem.

Unfortunately I no longer have access to Windows 2000 Server to TEST from my end with some Windows 7 systems I have. Lost access for testing with Server 2000 OS when I switched jobs.

We also wanted to use RIS which changed to WDS for Windows 7 deployment and so we started upgrading to Server 2008 R2 shortly before I swicthed jobs for a better job with better pay and benefits.

If you can afford to, you may want to upgrade to server 2003 or 2008. Windows Server 2008 R2 with WDS is sweet and secure and worked well before I left.Sorry for the ridiculous lag Dave. We fixed it and I totally forgot about this thread. Lol!!

Anyway, I just had a trainee doing it and the put it in the wrong registry folder.

Thanks for your time and reply though!Cool to hear that you solved the issue

Solve : Telnet server error 1058?

Answer»

I'm trying to run/experiment with a telnet server, but when I type
net start telnet
it says
Code: [Select]SYSTEM error 1058 has occurred.

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I'm pretty sure that I have enabled it, I've included a screenshot.

Do I need to enable telnet some other way, or do I need to enable/associate a device, and if so how can I do this.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Usually because the service is not turned on.

To enable the Telnet service
Start the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. To do so, click Start, then in the Start Search box, type services.msc.
Right-click Telnet, and then click Properties.
In the Startup type LIST, select one of the FOLLOWING:
Automatic to start Telnet Server when Windows starts

Manual to allow Telnet Server to be started and stopped when needed

You can start the service by CLICKING Start.
Click OK to close the Telnet Properties page.
Close the Services snap-in.Thanks, that was the solution I ended up coming to. The thing is that net start telnet then simply states that the service is already running, which suggests an interesting system, but I SET it to start automatically, which is good. Solve : Laptop reports WIFI password as incorrect?

Answer»

I have an Acer Aspire 5735z recently upgraded to Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. My son actually installed Windows for me. While installing he connected to the internet in his home via WIRELESS connection and got all the updates done etc. Now that I have it home it repeatedly reports that my wireless password is incorrect. Now, it so happens that I had a new router that was sent through, so I switched them over and reconnected the router to the internet. The laptop reports that this wireless password is incorrect as well. I can connect my smartphone to the router no problem.
My son activated the internet HOT spot on his PHONE and the laptop connected to it with no problem. It just seems to have a problem connecting to my internet. I cannot fathom what may be going wrong and hope that someone here can help me out. Many thanks for taking time to read this.
GabeI was POINTED in the direction of "Manage wireless settings". In there I deleted the profile for the mobile phone hotspot connection. Then went back out and tried again. This time it ACCEPTED the password without a problem. I still do't know why there was a problem, but hey....Windows! Quote from: Gabe62 on September 25, 2013, 09:43:49 AM

Solve : Time Warner Cable Router Packet Loss?

Answer»

In performing a packet loss test from remote location through dslreports.com I have found that the TWC router has sever packet loss depending on time of day. TWC claims it is signal loss from my house to this TWC router. This doesn't appear to be true as ping test is a remote test and my first hop out is my last hop in. Ping tests from my house outgoing to this router do not show the HIGH failures.
Test result is below but my analysis is that TWC router has a overloading issue with too much traffic at peak periods on downloads.
Any comments on this analysis with the test report below?  Line 13 is the TWC router in question.

This is not your home to the ISP issue at hop 13, it is an issue with the route the ISP has between the destination and your home, so its ISP side.

I have heard NOTHING good about Time Warner ISP, but those who have it seems to be stuck with it because its the only ISP available other than dial-up. Friend of mine has this ISP in PA, USA and nothing but problems and no other high speed CHOICE in her area.

Sadly there is nothing you can do to fix their problem, and ways AROUND this are to go with a different ISP or find a way to communicate through an alternate route to the destination that bypasses cpe-024-031-198-206.sc.res.rr.com such as trying a different DNS provider.

Not sure if this will correct this or not, but have you tried using a different DNS such as OpenDNS IP's which may use alternate  routing to get to the destination?

I had problems with my ISP Comcast and going with OpenDNS IP's vs their DNS servers cleared up problems.

Solve : Networking and Shared File Help?

Answer»

The thing is i have a shared custom made program/application. That custom program is currently in a SERVER pc. When RUNNING the said program on 1 computer it runs smoothly but when DIFFERENT computers (3 units) use/run it at the same time the program runs VERY slow. I think the program is access databased as it has many Microsoft Access FILES (red icon with key). The server computer holding the file is fine but the problem is the client computers when running the shared file there's DELAY (a long one) before it processes every action/functions. We run the network on a gigabit switch.what should i do to make the computers run the program faster

Solve : can't get domain name to be accessible online?

Answer»

So I am hosting my own website on my computer. I have already installed apache and bought a domain name. I configured my router based on the attached jpg. My router's ip address is 192.168.0.1 btw. I also have my domain name mapped to my ip address.

When I enter LOCALHOST on my browser, the proper web page is retrieved, but when I enter in my domain address and configure apache's ServerName to my domain, google chrome cannot connect to it. I have also made sure my windows firewall and isp does not block port 80.

What could I be doing wrong? Any help would appreciated! Thanks.

[recovering disk SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]It is not enough to have a domain name. You  NEED  addressee on the internet. You can not use the IP of your router.

Go to Google and ask 'what is my IP'
(Works on Bing too.)
Mine is: 64.169.155.180
But my router is 192.168.1.254

What you want requires more work and some investment of money.
You buy an IP address. Or share one.
Do you need more information?

Ok, I must have not been clear enough.
When I said I mapped my domain to my ip address I meant I mapped my domain name to my wan ip address, the internet address you are referring to. Now my internet service is provided by my isp, basically time warner.

What more do I need to get my domain running? The domain must point to a name server.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_server
Normally name servers work with dedicated serves, not a desktop computer.
My domains are all on servers, none of them on my personal desktop. It can be done, but it is hard to do. It is more piratical so pay a modest fee to get a space on a regular commercial server. Abut $60 a year, more or less.
And why is it that a name server cannot work with a desktop computer? And how do I get my domain to point at a name server?I want to help, if I can.
From your remarks is would seem that you have never managed a web site and are not familiar with the common methods most often used. Pardon me if I am  wrong. I am used to being wrong.

Your Domain Vendor may not accept a name-server that can not be verified. Or maybe they will. Below  is a simplified method given elsewhere.

Hosting a website on your computer is a technical challenge that can be made very simple by following correct tips and guides. Hosting a website on your computer used to require a professional, but not anymore. You might eventually need a web hosting company to take over at some later date if your traffic becomes really large and security becomes an issue. With basic skills in PROGRAMMING, computer usage and access to a few tools, you too can host a website on your home computer...

First thing is to have your Desktop in perfect shape. And don't ever use it for takes that stress your PC to its performance limit. That could crash Apache.

Second thing, your ISP  company has to let you have 24/7 service and almost unlimited bandwidth. And HIGH speed, in case your web site becomes very populat.

The third thing is you should be using a server OS, not a desktop OS. Both Windows and Linux  make a distribution between the two flavors f OS. So you should change over to using a server as your only OS on that PC. You Already have Apache, that's good. Do you also have installed a kind of SQL? And will you install a version of PHP? Not always required, but useful. Also, Pearl and maybe some other stuff like that for use on a server.

In addition to the three things above, there are some other matters to deal with too keep costs down and performance high.

Sign up with a dynamic DNS management service. Be aware that static DNS takes about 24 hours to propagate.

Setup your  router and firewall to let incoming messages from the Internet get into you box. You have to figure that out yourself. No easy answer.

Think about a plan to backup all you hard work. Maybe even a spare PC in case of a major hardware failure.

The point I want to make, is you can hardly save money doing it yourself. Of course, you never said that. I just made an assumption. Is cost an issue? For a few dollars a month you rent service that takes care of all the details. I have owned over one hundred domains and never tried to put any on a home server. But maybe I missed out on a lot of fun!

A word of of caution. Be careful about who you trust.  There are some out there that might 'help' you and then take your money or your domain. Something like that happened to me.
Well, apparently many think is is so easy...
Here is a collection of Videos.

How to use dynamic DNS host a "website".
Thank you! You're right. This is my first time putting a website online. I'll research more into this.

I originally wanted to host my own blog on my desktop computer bc I thought it'd be cool to try and a friend of mine did it. Money is not particularly the issue.

Also, I was wondering what you thought of hosting a website inside a virtual machine with a server os on your desktop computer. You would have apache, mysql and php installed in that vm and would be able to limit the amount of space apache consumes. Do you think your host computer would be more secure then? As fr as I kn ow it is hard to get 100 % Internet security. Even the military have had issues. http://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2009/03/20/suspected-pentagon-hacker-wolfenstein-arrested/
Drop me a PM and I will let .you have some space somewhere on a sub domain. You can play with different free blogs and other cool stuff. After a few weeks I mill have to take it down, but you an play with it and get a feel for what people do with a web site. Don't give me your  domain name.  I will use your 'anon123' as a sub domain on one of my inactive sites. Send me a PM if you like this. And no, I will not sell you anything. The site is inactive and I have already paid my dues.

Solve : Programs not being able to connect to the internet.?

Answer»

Hello, CH.

I have a networking problem with my computer.
Many of my programs can't access the internet, such as online installers and such, even when I run them as administrator.
Web browsers and Torrent clients still work, however.

I have not made any intentional changes to my computer, and have done a thorough virus scan with MBAM's most updated database.

As seen in the picture below, I was attempting to REINSTALL mingw-get. However, it was not ABLE to connect to the internet.

In this picture, I wrote a SHORT program to fetch Google's logo.
The first output is the return value of the URLDownloadToFileW from the Urlmon library.

If you have an idea of what is wrong, please tell me.
Thank you for the help.

Edit: This is the final log for the MinGW installer:

Solve : My netbook forgets the Wi-fi settings?

Answer»

First of all, here's the information about what device I'm using and having difficulty with:

Acer Aspire One, Intel Atom processor N450 (1.66 GHz, 512 KB Cache) Model AO532h
1 GB RAM
Windows 7 Starter (32-bit).  It is a Netbook, and does not have a CD (or DVD) drive.

I am able to connect this Netbook to Wi-fi, but here's the problem: when I shut it down, it forgets the settings.  When I turn it BACK on, I have to connect it to the Wi-fi manually.  Even when I right-click on the signal, click on properties, I click on the "Connections" tab, and there is a box to check where it says "Connect automatically when this network is in range".  I double-check that the box is checked, but after turning it off then, on again, the box is unchecked!  It's like my netbook says, "Okay, you can use the Wi-fi only when I'm turned on.  But I like to make you work by unchecking the "Connect automatically" box when you shut me off!"  Any ideas as to what I can do to keep that box checked forever??  Thanks.Did you say this is a new laptop? Less than  three months old?

If still under warranty, contact the vendor or tAcer directly.

It is very important for buyers to get bask to the vendors and report any proble3ms in the first few weeks of use. In some cases, the vendors are a fault. They MIGHT try to resell a unit that was returned. Even when it has s the original package material, you just don't know if somebody else had used nit.

Does the Acer have a button to turn off the WI-Fi as default?
Try also removing network profile and all other wireless profile (SSID) then manually connect again with the same auto connect settings. Network card driver update or reinstall would also be another option if the problem persist.
How to remove network profiles? Geek-9pm: Thanks for the reply.  I'll ask my sister, since she's the one that got the computer.  There is no button to turn the Wi-fi on or off, there is only a small light.
jason2074: Thanks for the reply.  I tried removing the network profile.  I thought it would work, but again it unchecked the box when I shut it down (I tried restarting it).  I'm having difficulty updating the driver (it says it's already up to date), and I'm not sure how to reinstall it either.Do you have other wireless networks saved under manage wireless networks? Please post the complete aspire one model next time.

Download MiniToolBox and open/run the program.
When open, checkmark or select all options then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.
Thanks again, Jason.  I thought that I had posted all info about the computer.  Anyways, here's more info about it: Aspire One 532h-2588; SNID 01509145516
I now only have one wireless network, which is the one that I want to connect to.

Here's the report from Minitoolbox.

18-07Remove McAfee completely from your system. It can cause network conflict and high system resource usage and it is not recommended nowadays. We can replace it later after the problem is resolved. See this link on how to remove McAfee. Remove also McAfee Security Scan Plus and old Java plugin. Please go to device manager and right-click your Atheros wireless device - Properties - driver tab and check the driver version. The latest driver version for your Acer Aspire netbook is 8.0.0.259 according to the Acer support site. Solve : Cisco Cataclyst 3560-x series: Unable to erase vlan info?

Answer»

Hello everyone!

I'm thinking that some of my more enterprise-related questions belong to another forum, but here is still a home when I have questions or am looking to help others.

Either way, I have a newer Cisco Cataclyst 3560-x series gigabit switch, 48 port. I got it seccond-hand to save on the price. I was able to go in and replace most of the settings to what I needed, though I am running into an issue.

I am using cisco's GUIDE to resetting cataclyst switches here:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps607/products_tech_note09186a00800c4546.shtml

However, upon sending the delete flash:vlan.dat and then doing a reload, the file is still there with all the same information in it as before.

Well, if anyone has an idea what I am doing wrong, let me know, as it would be EXTREMELY helpful. I would love to get this switch up and working and installed in my server rack. Thanks again!Have you tried the hardware reset procedure here:

Quote

On the 2940, 2950/2955, 2970, 3550, 3550, 3560, 3570, and 2900XL/3500XL fixed configuration switches, the vlan.dat file is stored in flash:.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps607/products_tech_note09186a00800c4546.shtmlThat is the one I have been using. And it does tell me:
Quote
On the fixed configuration switches, issue the delete flash:vlan.dat command.

So, after issuing the "delete flash:vlan.dat" command and reloading the router, the file persists to be there

Here's the log of my console output. Sorry if it's a bit long, though I do want to be thorough for anyone who can find what the issue is

And yes, while the existence of the file after reload would be normal, the size should be smaller and showing vlan data reveals no reset to the data had taken place

Solve : Responses I got from VPNs regarding their GPG public key?

Answer»

I decided to contact the VPN services listed in this article and ask them to provide their PGP/GPG public key.

Here is a short summary:

PROVIDED GPG KEY: AirVPN, BolehVPN, Ipredator, IVPN, Mullvad.

DID NOT PROVIDE GPG KEY: Boxpn, EarthVPN, NordVPN, Private Internet Access, PrivatVPN, Proxy.sh, VikingVPN.

DID NOT RESPOND MY E-MAILS: Anonine, BTGuard, Privacy.io, TorGuard, TorrentPrivacy.

NOT CONTACTED: PRQ, Faceless.ME, IPVanish, BlackVPN.
Those companies were not contacted because they either keep logs, or their policies are too vague, or they use a deficient SSL/TLS certificate.

Below you will find their responses to my messages. My name, my e-mail address, and tracking links have been removed. Conclusion is in the end.

Hi there. We do not use PGP encryption and so have no pgp key to provide.

If you have any further questions then please just reply to re-open the ticket.

Hello,

I am very surprised that you do not use PGP/GPG (Pretty Good Privacy).

Your business claims to offer high levels of Privacy, Security, and in a way Anonimity, but when it comes to customer relationship it seems that none of those things really matter.

If a person wants to contact you through e-mail, he has left no option but to have his whole message transmitted unsecurely. Although e-mail is unsecure by design, GPG is a popular free encryption tool used by many privacy conscious users - and companies - to increase security.

So, as you allow your customers to contact you through e-mail, why do you choose *not* to use GPG since your business is privacy and many of your customers may use GPG?

Also, I found your business through the article "VPN Services That Take Your Anonymity Seriously, 2013 Edition" (https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-services-that-take-your-anonymity-seriously-2013-edition-130302/), published by TorrentFreak.

I did a little research and of all the VPN services listed there, only four of them provide their GPG public key to their customers; they are: AirVPN, Ipredator, IVPN, and Mullvad. They are usually highly regarded as credible and efficient by users.

So I have some questions:

How is your service compared to those mentioned here?
Is your service in any way better than theirs?
Why should I should choose your company over them?

Thanks.

Kind regards,
-----

First of all our PGP Key is (and apologies for the delay in providing this) as this was not escalated to me.

We will definitely include our PGP key publicly soon.

I believe our service has unique advantages compared to other PROVIDERS:
a) Our company is under Malaysian jurisdiction, arguably better protected than let's say a US/UK/EU jurisdiction
b) As usual, we don't take logs as well and are not required by law to do so.
c) Our speed is pretty good (although of course your mileage may vary depending on which server you choose but you can see regular reviews of our service in terms of speed).
d) We offer access to our friends tracker at IPT for subscribers 30 days and above if you're a fan of P2P. We are not affiliated to them but do have a cordial relationship with them. However we do not SHARE customer details with them.
e) We hope our personal service in answering your questions as thoroughly as possible will set us apart from other providers

Thanks.

Hi -----,

Thanks for contacting us. There are several steps we take to ensure the privacy
of our users via email. First, all of, we never request or send sensitive
information via email. Secondly, all of our emails are SSL encrypted, to ensure
that the email is not snagged in transit. We also do not keep logs of any
activity on our network, to ensure there is no way to find out who was doing
what when connected to the VPN, unlike Ipredator and IVPN, which both admit to
keeping logs for "debugging" purposes. The fact of the matter is, if the
information exists, even for debugging, it can be subpoenaed and seized by a
court, and used to prosecute the customers of that service. It is for this exact
reason that we keep NO LOGS WHATSOEVER. Privacy is our number one goal with our
service.

Hi,

First of all, we do provide a secure VPN service not a secure email. I
don't really understand why our VPN security should be less secure because
we don't encrypt emails. We never have personal details in our emails.
Nothing to reveal in emails to us.

I have never used the services you mention, but what I can see is that we
have more servers on different countries. What we're working hard on are
high quality service, such as IP-transit. We buy our service from Internet
providers, and not like other VPN service do, they rent servers from a
small hosting company with shared internet connection. Take Mullvad and
AirVPN, they only rent servers from low profile companies. They rent a
server with 1 gbit for 150€. We pay 1200 - 1500€ for every 1 Gbit, quality
capacity and still we have better prize. We also have servers like that,
but we're working on exchanging that.
We also gonna allow 4 logins simultaneously.

Hello,

Thanks for your inquiry.

Regarding the PGP key, we do not publish them to public to avoid them being compromised by unknown decryption methods. Moreover, we generate a unique key for specific cases. This provides even more security than having a public key used for all sorts of communication - we believe it defeats a bit the purpose of having a messaging encryption capacity.

Now, regarding the difference we have compared to the suppliers you quoted, I would tend to believe these consist of:

1) We offer more diverse payment methods (95+) than any other supplier.

2) All our services are run from RAM and they do not log anything.

3) Our network is huge, with more than 30 countries and over 200 nodes for the $10 package.

4) We have a Windows/Mac/Linux/Android OpenVPN client that we hand crafted with love.

5) Our security team is made up of two researchers in encryption. Other providers do not obviously have academia among their ranks.

6) We are not from Sweden, or EU, or worse, United States. We are from Seychelles and our staff is working remotely from the 4 corners of the planet. This makes our structure more resilient to third party assaults.

Voila, that's pretty much about it. Should you have any further question, please do not hesitate.

Kind regards,

Gena

Hi -----!
Sorry about your concern over email security. There are multiple reasons that we do not use PGP email. Mainly that we do not consider email secure, as we have said before. Another big reason is it is customer policy not to personally identify any users on our service. It is especially important in email because all email in many countries is intercepted, including if the email just transits ACROSS one of those nations en route to its destination. If there is no identifiable customer data in the email, then the company has no liability to release information to governments, and the user is in no danger of being identified. A unique PGP signature can be tied to a person/computer.
That being said, you are not the first person to come to us with concerns that we do not encrypt our email. It is not technically difficult for us to implement, but we are hesitant to do so because if people feel their emails are "bulletproof" they will reveal identities or illegal activity they are doing, putting liability on the company. We will likely be reconsidering the issue over the next week.
I don't like to plug our own VPN services over others, but here are our advantages:
Strong network security, administrated by certified and experienced personnel.
Our VPN service does not use Windows operating systems, both for security and clandestine reasons.
We do not use any closed-source software server-side, and we do not use a closed-source client.
We do not use any closed-source encryption ciphers. (No PPTP, No IPsec, No SSTP)
We stay on top of standards and actively defend against problems as they arise. (We avoid NIST P_521 certified elliptic curves due to NSA tampering, we updated OpenSSL to 1.0.1e on the day of release, etc)
We use strong encryption settings for the VPN network. The default is 4096-bit RSA and AES-256-CBC (on OpenSSL 1.0.1e to counter the BEAST vulnerability) and our settings can NOT be lowered.
We only use Tier-1 network providers and have a very fast network with 12 redundant carriers, preventing outages, combined with a policy that allocates minimum amounts of bandwidth to each user. In other words, our service is fast and it doesn't go down (with the exception of a rare server update).
We don't log anything. We have a policy of keeping no connection data at all unless we are under DDoS attack and need to update firewalls. That data is stored in memory and permanently destroyed in an unrecoverable fashion on restart.
Speed, Privacy, and Security are our main concerns at VikingVPN.
If you would like to know more information, just ask! We are pretty open about our cryptology and security, although we do keep some secrets about our intrusion detection systems and killswitches.

** CONCLUSION **
As you can see, most VPNs listed here don't use PGP/GPG encryption, either because they don't know how to use it or because they don't care about their customers, which is evident in their responses.

I believe you should NEVER trust in any service that claims to offer privacy, security and anonimity, but does not provide SSL/TLS certificate enabled by default in their pages, and their PGP/GPG public key to contact them.

So here is a brief comment about the services that provide their GPG key:

AirVPN: They are usually well reviewed by users, but they are incorporated in Italy, which may be subjected to EU Data Retention Laws. Beware.

BolehVPN: The least recommended. They did not have a GPG key available when I first requested it; their website does not have SSL/TLS enabled by default, and it does not work when I try "https" manually.

Ipredator: It is from The Pirate Bay guys, so they know very well what they are doing and they have a strong reputation for security. They could only be a little clearer regarding their privacy policy since they log "only for debugging purposes".

IVPN: They are an EFF member, based in Malta, and the only one that has an EV SSL certificate (the green address bar). They also have the most detailed and complete website, and they go as far as analyzing other VPNs' privacy policies. Highly recommended.

Mullvad: It is the only one that accepts cash sent by regular mail as payment, which is the most anonymous payment method ever. Highly recommended.

I hope you have enjoyed it! Please leave your comments. Thanks! Thanks for posting this, I'm sure it will be useful information for anyone interested in using the services mentioned

Solve : Problems accessing overseas online games?

Answer»

There is a popular game that my oversea friends in China introduced me too. But the game is an online game that is a China website. When I open up the game webpage, it starts to load. The loading time was slow as expected, but when I GET to the game login page it just freezes, or sometimes I cannot even enter the website...how can I fix this?
Any help is appreciated. Can you share the URL to this game so I can test on my test box?Okay, the game that my little brother is playing is in an oversea website in China called: www.4399.com  It's a website full of games, and the game we are trying to access is one of them. But the actual game is on: http://www.4399.com/flash/seer.htm
Thanks.Hey Dave, I'm starting to realize that it is starting to affect other web pages as well, especially overseas one. I do expect oversea sites to be slow, but they are not just slow, they are unusable(loads on forever, loads a blank page e.g). Now, even my local sites are getting slower...
Any help is appreciated
Thanks, WhitebeardPlease run www.speedtest.net and share figures. This will show what you have for bandwidth.
Then run the following to test for latency:

Run these from cmd shell and write down average and max latency for all of these.

ping www.google.com          ( Note: This should be a low latency less than 60ms for DSL and Broadband )

ping www.4399.com             ( Note: This will show the latency between you and the website, as long as PING requests are not disabled by the host ) You might get a message that doesnt report info back and that would be if they have PING requests denied on their server. However if it allows it it will give you insight as to latency for the connection between your computer and the web server that hosts the game.

If you can ping this www.4399.com website successfully you can ALSO traceroute it and see where the latency is located.

tracert www.4399.com     is the command to trace the latency of all HOPS between your computer through the ISP and the ISP's connection to the web all the way back to the host in china.

When you have done this if the information doesnt make sense as to where the problem is at if not straight forward, share it here and we will explain the figures. You can copy and paste the text info here from the command shell.Hey Dave,
Thanks a lot for the reply. I had understood your instructions and did everything as indicated. The speedtest ran fine, and  I seemed to found the problem. Thanks a lot for the help!
(sorry i cannot copy the text because my computer's out of power and im using my phone to type. But the problem was fixed.)
Cool to hear you found the problem.

If you could PLEASE share here the fix or cause for the problems you had that would be great. This way in the future if anyone has a similar issue they will find your helpful information in the CH search as well as Google Search, which could point the way to the cause of their same SYMPTOM issue, and possibly a solution.

Solve : Help! Internet won't connect!?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I got a new used "computer" (motherboard with integrated GRAPHIC card, ram memory, processor and hard disk that has installed xp along with proper drivers for the components),  and as I connect the patch cable (standard RJ 45) the NIC lights up, the message pops up saying it's connected, but as when I go to my explorer it SAYS there is no internet, that just confuses me...

It's probably a tiny thing that I'm overlooking.

I'm real close to reinstalling the whole thing, but then I will need to find the drivers on the internet, which will be pain in the *censored* because the previous owner lost the cd's...

Any ideas?

Thanks! You may get such a message if your firewall is preventing communication between you and your router or modem. So try turning off your firewall temporarily to see if that's the issue.

Check with your ISP to see what your network settings should be.  DHCP is pretty normal. Now, if your computer is not set for DHCP, that could be the issue. If you're using a directly connected modem, your ISP should give your the IP settings for your computer.

What does the other end of the Ethernet cable (RJ-45) connect to? Is it a router, gateway router, or a modem? Have you installed any software for the modem/router? It may require this. Quote from: jan2011 on September 17, 2013, 06:25:12 AM

It connects to a router/switch, the thing is that I USE the same cable on my computer that I use all the time, so I guess it's not hardware issue. I'm thinking there is more to firewall... The thing is that the "computer" was used in a big time company and it could be that they disabled the internet somehow... I looked around in firewall settings, but just primary things and didn't saw anything out of ordinary, could be overlooking...

And in device manager says that device is working properly for the NIC, so the driver-wise should be fine..Using a flash DRIVE and a working computer with internet connection to download the software and save the logs,

Download MiniToolBox and open/run the program.
When open, checkmark or select all options then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

Solve : Who's using my router??

Answer»

I have a Netgear wireless, I can't log into this router, all the ip addresses I can think of don't work, ALSO the "router login page" doesn't work either.  Any suggestions other than a reset?  I also need to know, if i do eventually log in, will it tell me who/what is on my network? (who is using it?)Depending on router, it may or may not have monitoring features to see mac addresses of who is connected to it once you are able to get into it.

I recently upgraded my D-Link Wireless Router to flashing it with DD-WRT and it turns a $30 router into features of a $100+ high end router. This DD-WRT has many many features, probably many you wont use, but it has monitoring to see who is connected to it.

When I set mine up I instantly saw a wireless device connected and was like...what the? What is this? All my laptops and the kindle fire are turned off. What is this device? I wrote down the mac address and did an online hardware lookup which uses the first 3 hex pairs of the 6 to point out the device or network ADAPTER USED and it came up as a match to the Kindle Fire which was shut off. To my surprise this device even when powered off was sitting on the wifi as connected.

To get into the router you will need the correct username and password. Otherwise you have to use the small reset button and set it back to factory defaults and immediately change the password to avoid anyone else from getting in and locking you out again.

With proper security setup for the router password as well as strong wireless security you should be all set, however if you want to monitor who is connected, and if your router is supported you can flash it to DD-WRT and go that route. *Warning though, once you flash it with DD-WRT, you cant revert back to the original hardware firmware, its a permanent change that cant be undone. It also voids the warranty on your router if its one that is new enough to have a warranty left on it, and if you have a problem with the flash process the router can be bricked = turned into a paperweight. Odds of bricking one are very small if you chose the correct flash firmware and verify that the router is on the supported list for DD-WRT.

The only device change I have noticed other than giving it many more advanced features is that the green LEDs on the router act different now. They use to flash when the devices connected via Cat5 cables were communicating and now they stay solid when no communication is happening and go completely out for each port that is in use when communicating. Not a big problem, as for who pays much attention to LEDs unless you are troubleshooting, and the advanced features outweight a blinking green LED.Try also using Advanced IP Scanner software to check for connected devices on router.

Solve : Domain user needs to map home drive?

Answer»

Dear Experts

I have got my work laptop (WINDOWS 7) that was configured to access a domain work.

When I log in to my laptop the username that was assigned to me is like that : country\d50001122,,,,,,,,made it up and password is : forum

When I am at home I want to backup my work from the laptop to a network drive on my home desktop computer (called storage1).

On my desktop computer I tried to create a username d50001122 ( I removed the country with slash) and with same domain password.

Then I enabled the sharing and the security on my home drive.

I tried from my laptop to access that drive but error message pops us :

Quote

You do not have permission to access \\homedesktop\storage1. Contact your network administrator to request access

Did i miss something ? is that error because of user is a domain user ?

RegardsIts because the laptop is on the corporate domain and NEEDS to be joined to your home domain which might be "mshome" or "workgroup", or whatever custom name you chose.

I ran into this problem with other users at my last job who used their company laptops at home. The best thing for them to do was to use a USB Flash Drive or a USB External Drive to store data on.

One way to make it work over a lan would be to change permissions to allow "everybody" to connect to the network share location, however this opens up security risks, especially if you have WIFI which has access to this share location.

The best option and CHEAPEST which was not available years ago when I supported users of corporate laptops was to use cloud storage on a google or amazon drive where you can store files from the laptop to from anywhere with a network connection to the internet. Its free and easy to set up and secure as long as no one ever GETS your CREDENTIALS. If faced with this problem today, I'd direct the users to use online cloud storage as the solution.Hi DaveLembke

Thanks for your reply

Just to add what I forget to mention  my home computer not in domain , it is in a workgroup

Solve : Wireless connections/adapter stops working?

Answer»

Hi. For the last few days my wireless network just disappears after an hour or so. Nothing is available at that point. When I restart laptop it is back WORKING again for another hour or so....LONGEST is about 3hours no issue. There is no difference in speed or anything LIKE that.

I have done a system restore to a week ago and set UPDATES not to auto update. I have also checked the power options and said no to turning off to save power. I have also tried telling it to try connecting to the wireless network when it is not broadcasting its name (SSID). I have tried the standard re-set on router (turning off 3mins taking all power out an pressing reset button).

When i diagnose the connection while it is available it says that it fixes a problem with auto configuration but the same continues.

The driver is the latest available.
My mobile is still connected to the router and has no issues.

Using Windows 7 64x.
Atheros AR5B97 Network Adapter
driver version 9.1.0.334
router is D-link DSL2780
Any more info NEEDED please askGuessing no-one can help then

Solve : Tether Computer to TrakPhone via USB cable??

Answer»

I have a TrakPhone which has internet through its 1.25"x 1" display which is unrealistic for real computer use. One of my friends tethered his phone which is not a TrakPhone to his computer a netbook while on the road and is able to get online through it.

My Phone is a LG Model LG100C  FCC ID# BEJLG100C Rev 1.1 I havent found any info for online on how to get the tether to work, however I did find the correct driver for the computer to recognize it for what it is from a Chinese website. No idea what the site said, but the link there with the phone matched and so I DOWNLOADED it to a beater computer in case it had anything bad in it and it no longer showed in Device Manager as Unknown Device, but instead it recognized it.

I then tried to get out to the web through the trakphone and it wouldnt. So I was like hmm... maybe I have to initiate the web CONNECTION with my TrakPhone first and then somehow it will know to use this connection via somne sort of built in driver. But nope. I also looked into how to redirect my network access to the TrakPhone and no such luck since it needs an IP, and Gateway out and i cant even get this tether setup that far.

With each test of this costing me 1 MINUTE minimum of airtime, I decided to check here vs wasting time trying to get this to work when SOMEONE ELSE here may know how to set this up without burning all my minutes through trial and error.

Solve : want to turn old PC's into hardware servers - advice, please??

Answer»

I have at least 2 PC's sitting unused in my office (I'm in school taking computer classes, taking Windows Server 2008 this semester) that (got this idea out of my school textbook this semester) I'd like to turn into hardware servers, that is say, a file server, web server, etc without having to shell out $$$ for a real hardware server(s) (which cost on amazon $200/300 and up).

I also have a page/article/how to from PCworld bookmarked on  my ipad about how to turn an old PC into a server. Ok, the thing is, I'd like to set them up as wireless servers that I can access remotely (say, access files on one of them even when I'm down at the local Barnes & Noble cafe for instance) and I don't think they have wifi NIC's/drivers in them, so come next month I'm thinking of getting these NIC's/drivers (not ready for any purchases at this time, so please don't tempt me, I'll let you guys know when I'm ready to buy) and even if I set them up with MS Windows server 2008 Active Directory to access wirelessly anywhere at home, I'd still have to set up wifi NIC's in them, so what's the first thing I should do to turn them into a pair of servers before getting the NIC's?

to the best of my knowledge I believe they have Core Duo CPU, 512 MB RAM, a optical drive, and a hdd they came with.

PHOTO # 1 the 2 PC's in question; photo # 2 the entry to my workshop (notice the stairwell railing, indicating its upstairs) in our house.

could you folks please answer my questions/advise me?

thanks in advance.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]To do it for free, you will have to make them Linux Servers

Many years ago I took a Linux Course to fill in the gaps in my Linux knowledge at a local community college and the final project was one that was open ended but had to be something related to Linux. I asked if I can make a Web/File Server and it was approved.

I ended up using Fedora Core 4 Linux Distro in Fall Semester 2005 as the Main OS on a Celeron 500Mhz computer with 256MB RAM. I also added dual-boot and had Windows 2000 Professional on this computer so it could be dual purpose. I ended up installing 2 hard drives and one drive had Windows 2000 Pro on it and the other drive was partitioned in a way that I had Fedora Core 4 as well as a FAT32 partition so that I could easily transfer data on this same computer between Windows and Linux.

I ended up installing Apache for my Web Server and it worked perfect and was really easy to set up, with the most complex of it being that I had to add port forwarding on my ROUTER to allow incoming traffic to get to my web server. I also assigned a static IP to this server so that the port forwarding would never break. I then registered myself a domain name and added a redirection from the PROVIDER godaddy so that anyone going to my website would be redirected to \\myipfrommyisp:8077 which my router would pass through port forwarding to the web server at 192.168.1.250   ( oh and :8077 is the port number that the server was on and allowed passthrough of )

With my web server up and a very basic web page stating that the site is under construction with a gif at the center of it, I moved on to making my FTP server.

For this I ended up going with VSFTPd http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vsftpd
This was trickly to set up with lack of how to info on the web at the time, but I got it working.

To connect to my file server, I once again had to add port forwarding rules to it to allow FTP to work, but also a surprise was that my ISP was blocking port 443, so I had to use a different port to FTP through that wasnt blocked and I think I ended up going with port 8078 instead which the ISP did not block.

I used Filezilla to connect to my FTP server from a Windows computer at another location on the web, and demonstrated to the class the week before that the server was at home and here is the FTP server and showed how the files were uploaded and downloaded. The following week I then had to bring in my HP Pavilion 500Mhz Celeron MINITOWER and demonstrate how its all configured etc, and got my 100% on the project.

The cost to me in the end though wasnt free, because I had to buy a NIC for this computer since it never came with one since it was a low end Wal-Mart type computer that was made for dial-up. So I ended up getting a Netgear 10/100 NIC for $20 at Staples and installed that. This NIC showed that it supported Linux on the box so it was an easy NIC to get working with it.

Fedora has come a long ways since, but I have moved on from Fedora. I like Linux Mint these days. And as far as a good server distro there are many, but the least painful would be to go with Ubuntu Server for a real server since its widely used and lots of support. Although you can turn any normal distro into a server by installing software and configuring it like I did with Fedora.

Other than this FTP and Web Server project, I have also made a Ventrillo Voice Communication Server and UT99 server since then to host gaming on a Pentium III 850Mhz with custom game maps for death matches with others around the world that wandered into my server from a main site that you could register your server with and leave on for others to join in on. And lastly I hosted up honey pots where I took old computers, installed OS on them, and filled them with bogus info so they looked important, and placed them on the DMZ side with security holes intentionally placed to bait a hacker and then I'd pull them offline when a hacker messed with one and see what they left behind etc, reimage it and then put it back out on the DMZ to grab/fish for another hackers attention and see what they do and what tools they plant to try to steal info etc. But I stopped this because while it was fun, it was disrupting my network connection when they would perform a DoS on it etc and my wife would be upset when there was no bandwidth left for the Vonage VoIP phone to work with the honey pot getting hammered.

If you want to go with MS Server 2008 Standard your looking at like $450+ unless you can get a copy under a Educational Discount Program such as Gradware.com ... which as been acquired by  http://www.academicsuperstore.com/category/Software/277591 When I was in college I bought all sorts of software at educational discount and saved like $1200. The only drawback was with MS Visual Studio .Net 2002 licensed for educational purposes only so you couldnt use it after the fact to compile projects and sell them. I never made anything worthy of selling anways, but I ended up having to compile projects with other compilers that were not the educational version which I posted on the web as freeware to avoid MS from knocking on my door with a project that was compiled with the educational discount copy. I ended up getting Windows XP Pro cheap too through this way back.

To get software at educational rate / student discount you have to be an active student in a credited college and the software that you are purchasing has to be related to whatever course your taking although I was able to get Studio MX and wasnt taking a course on it and I just wanted it to play with and the price tag was sweet. When I bought the heavily discounted software I had to scan my drivers license and send that to them along with my semesters transcript from the state college I was attending as proof of being an active student. Once it was approved I was golden and got my software quickly at heavy discounts for learning on. Quote from: AlienBZ on September 07, 2013, 06:05:25 PM

For either of these things you need a router.

(1) When you are at the local Barnes & Noble cafe or any other location away from home and you use wireless you are using a wifi connection provided locally and connecting to the internet through that. To access them in such a location you would need to connect the server machines to the internet (using a router) and do the stuff Dave described.

(2) To access them at home what you would need is a router with wifi. You could connect them to the home router either with Ethernet cables using any existing NIC present or wirelessly using an wireless card. Many DSL and cable connections come with wireless routers provided by the internet service provider, or if you just have a DSL or cable modem you can buy a router for around $40.

When I am connected to XBox Live I cannot use my computer to use internet. When Xbox is off I can go on the internet. I cannot use Xbox and internet at the same time.
I FOLLOWED the USER guide but still no use.
Thnks for any suggestions

Jarek Do you any problems with your Internet connection generally? Any loss of connection? Slow SPEEDS? (FORGET about Xbox Live for a moment)not generallyHmmm...?

What speed is your Internet connection?

And are both your PC and Xbox 360 set up to obtain IP addresses automatically or manually? My internet speed is over 6Mbps.
