Answer» ok guys got a fun one here just got 13 laptops for my company all gateway NC50A with Win 7 home premium we run Server 2008 R2 in our main office with wireless access points around the building. I have opened 3 of these laptops and so far none of them will connect to the INTERNET using wireless or wired connections. I know they wont see our network cause they are not Pro OS's these don't need to see the server or be part of the domain we have a few computers in office that just hook up for internet and they all work fine. |

Solve : Problems Setting up Printer Wirelessly? |
Answer» Hello ST is absolutely correct. Having done this very recently with a Samsung laser printer you initially will need to connect the printer to the router via an Ethernet cable. Then follow the instructions exactly as provided in your manual. By the way due to a dynamic IP address generated by the router. A condition created when a power failure occurs or the router is turned off you may need to do the process again each time it occurs as the link will be lost. Apparently this can be overcome by a process of creating a static IP system on the computer. I cannot advise you on that as i have forgotten the process. Don't be shy to contact the printer manufacturer if you cannot create the installation initially. My Samsung instructions were impossible to follow. Actually if his router has a usb port, then he simply needed to choose "add network printer" when trying to set it up from the pc... Quote from: immental1200 on April 22, 2012, 05:44:11 AM Actually if his router has a usb port, then he simply needed to choose "add network printer" when trying to set it up from the pc... Are you sure? If a printer has network support built in (like the OP's) and an ethernet port (again, like the OP's) you just plug it into an ethernet port on the router. If the printer is an ordinary non-network one with a USB connector only, meant for connecting to one PC, then only certain routers support this, and each computer on the network has to have special sharing software installed. (e.g. Belkin USB Print and Storage Manager) and even then not all printer functionality is guaranteed to be available. If this is not accurate, can you supply details, as this is something I will soon be needing to know about. If this helps, last week I did the FOLLOWING and it worked. Downstairs, there is a PC tower connected by cables to a router and printer. Upstairs, I have a wireless PC (which uses the router downstairs) and when I clicked 'Devices and Printers | Add a Printer' on the wireless tower upstairs, it detected the PC that is connected to the printer by cable downstairs. Firstly, it looks for the name of the cabled-networked PC and then searches for printers connected to it. What you then need to do is download the drivers (from the manufacturer's site and appropriate to your operating system) to the wireless computer. When you have done that, it will invite you to print off a test page. Unhappily some all-in-one printers ate hard to set up outside of the exact instructions from the manual. Panasonic KX-MB2000 This is the specific manual. It is PDF. http://shop.panasonic.com/resources/content/UCM_STG_CNT_039795.pdf |

Solve : Creating a homegroup Win XP/7? |
Answer» Hello Next, you need to change settings on the Windows 7 machine so it knows how to talk to the XP machines without sounding condescending. Go to the Network and Sharing Center. You can right-click the network icon in the Notification Area and choose "Open Network and Sharing Center" to do this. Once there, select to "Change Advanced Settings". Make sure everything is turned on. (You can turn off password protection if desired). Basically, when you are dealing with XP<->Vista/7 networking, just forget about Homegroups, since XP has no concept of homegroups there is no way for it to be a part of one. Just the standard networking fare. But that part seems to work fine, since the XP machine seems to be able to view resources on the other two machines. Of course, none of the icons make sense, since they imply the presence of computers named "workgroup" and also a workgroup named "xpworkgroup". What does the XP machine display from the "Show workgroup computers" task pane OPTION? Hello BC_programmer I have made some progress: the Win 7 wireless PC (STEVE_OWNER_PC) can now see the XP wired computer and since that computer had given file share permission, I am now able to take files from it and work on them. So that's great. In the "Show workgroup computers" task pane of the XP computer, I can only see XPWORKGROUP (the name of the XP computer itself) and STEVE_OWNER_PC, but the wired Win7 PC (don-PC) is turned off at the moment because I have run out of electricity main's sockets, so I will have to go out and buy some plug extensions first - then I will post back. Thanks for your help. Hello BC_Programmer I have now done it. All computers can now 'see' one another and, in fact, I have also added a Win7 wireless laptop to the 'workgroup'. Thanks for all your guidance and help. Cheers Excellent! Always good to have a Happy Ending |

Solve : Created more than one network, now wifi doesn't work at all?? |
Answer» I just sunk $460 into repairing my tower, I brought it home and attempted to connect to my houses wifi which was called linksys. When I did it asked me for the 8 digit security code on the back of the router. After I entered that information it created a new network somehow called linksys001. The tower said it was CONNECTED to the internet, but it did not WORK. The tower said it was connected to the internet, but it did not work.Any PARTICULAR message when opening up any browser? Does the desktop uses a USB wifi adapter?I tried resting the router today, the model number is WRT54G2 V1. When I reset it, it still shows signals for both linksys and linksys001.UPDATE: Got the reset to work by holding the button down for a full minute. My laptop can now connect to linksys which is my houses regular secured wifi, but when my tower tries to connect windows prompts me to "set up your network?" instead of asking me for the WEP key. When I click continue without setting up it says it is connected with limited or no connectivity. And yes I am using a EXTERNAL usb wifi card called D-link Model DWA-130 Quote "set up your network?"Is it the Windows Networking Wizard? What OS is your desktop running? Usually connecting to home wifi would only ask you for the passphrase key so I don't know what kind of setup you are viewing. |

Solve : Curious port forward issue.? |
Answer» I am forwarding ports for a PROGRAM that was PREVIOUSLY working until a day or two ago and is now getting connection errors. Name: David-PC My problem is that when I visit canyouseeme.org, it shows these ports as blocked. The curious PART is when i use the port checking program downloaded from portforward.com, the single port I check with that program opens up and all others close. So when I do things in this order here is the result: Quote canyouseeme.org - check 8393 - fail Does anyone know what is doing this? I should mention that I have disabled windows FIREWALL (as far as I can tell, it says off everywhere but Ive had issues before) and do not run any software firewalls. |

It would be putting dial up too my phone not G Quote from: Ryuk on June 24, 2012, 05:05:22 PM Doubt that it will say how too in the manual If your phone is capable of sharing it's internet connection with a laptop then it should be covered in the manual. It seems like every time you come requesting help and get directed to the manuals / user guides you either don't have them, don't have time to look in them, or doubt they will help you. The purpose of these manual / user guides are to help the general user perform the various functions for the device. They should be the first place you look when you need assistance. Only after you have tried what they say and you still can't get it to work should you post asking for help. Additionally you have been around long enough to know that when you do post requesting help you should list the problem in full detail and list everything you have done. I have also noticed that you like to make post for other people to try and help them out, while I applaud your willingness to help others you need to first ensure you have a look at their system so you can see exactly what the problem is instead of just going by what they told you which is what you normally do. No one here can help you fix a problem when you can't even tell them exactly what the problem is.all right so I cant find the manual to the phone right off. I'm home know but, I cant find the folder for it Quote from: reddevilggg on June 24, 2012, 05:16:15 PM Found a manual in seconds on google. I really don't know why you're losing PATIENCE with ryuk. Solve : Unable to renew ip address/limited or no connectivity? |
Answer» I'm having trouble connecting to the internet on my laptop. It has been saying limited or no connectivity. I talked to my internet provider, and they did EVERYTHING they could do. They couldn't fix the ISSUE, they said something about a hardware or software problem. I can't renew the IP address. Since about Wednesday last week I have been following tips I found on different tech websites. I have tried some ipconfig solutions, Msinfo32, fixing Winsock corruption. I'm just following instructions I figure you all know what i'm talking about with ipconfig and that other stuff. Nothing has WORKED yet. I really don't have $65 - $80 to pay a repair store. That's why i'm trying to get advice and try and fix this sort of on my own. I have tried netsh winsock reset. It said to restart the computer for the changes to take effect and I still couldn't renew the ip address. I have seen posts similar to my issue but they were not quite the same. That's why I went ahead and made this new post. If you need any more information, let me know. Any advice on anything I could do would be appreciated. Thank you. |

Solve : New to Networking? |
Answer» Hi Folks looking for help with my networking. ...Your distance/speed issue could be due to WiFi connection being 802.11g instead of 802.11n . Most new routers are b/g &n. Many DSL combo modems/routers are b/g only, so there is nothing you can do about the WiFi speed. 802.11n has much greater range & speed. 1. I believe so. 2. Yes. 3. Just plug it in. 4. Cat5e cable is one type of ethernet cable. 5. Yes, but you can't use the old connectors you cut off. 6. The cat5e cable you have sounds like a telephone/DSL cable, 4 or 6 conductor instead of 8 conductor. 7. Your printer is USB. You would need a print server to convert the USB to ethernet Quote from: truenorth on May 30, 2012, 11:22:06 AM Well there is quite a bit in your post so i hope i'll hit all the bases.Yes you can run both wireless and wired connections to the router. The distances you are mentioning re the wireless efficiency issues are appropriate (unless compensated for by additional hardware--which is possible). What you are actually experiencing is signal loss over distance. If you don't have an issue with wired that will solve it. Your Ethernet connection on your computer and the router should be the same and a cat5 cable should work for both. You can make the non wireless printer capable of becoming wireless with additional hardware and even share the printer with more than one computer if so desired. There are optional signal booster antennae available to improve the signal strength over greater distances. There are also WI-fi reception antennae with software that can be added to the usb ports of computers to increase the signal reception of computers. I have used such a device on a laptop for years when traveling and accessing public WI-fi sites with very acceptable results. Did i cover all your points?truenorth Thanks truenorth Yes you answered my questions. I now have a better understanding. I realize there was a lot of questions but I thought that I'd throw them all out there instead of a number of POSTS. overthehill Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 30, 2012, 11:35:08 AM Your distance/speed issue could be due to WiFi connection being 802.11g instead of 802.11n . I like the way that you sorted my questions out. Between truenorth's input and yours I now know many of my options. From your reply I now have another router question though. If I understand properly my ISP could have set-up a 802.11n combo modem/router instead of the 802.11g. Do I understand properly? The Cat5e cable that I have is actually a 4/pr cable. What I found interesting though was as I mentioned. The cut off end ( I do realize these are a one time only crimp) does just not fit(for some reason) into any ports in the router. It did come out of the port on my PC so that was the reason I asked whether or not I required RJ-45 connectors?. Think I'll just print from my desktop. Thanks again.overthehill Quote from: overthehill on May 30, 2012, 01:25:12 PM ...DSL & cable have different tiers (speed plans) of service. Depending on your tier 802.11g may be more that adequate. In my area, we have AT&T & I can see all the modem/routers in my area from my wifi laptop. DSL's are easy to spot because all are 2Wire & have a NAME like 2Wire1234 & all are 802.11g. Your modem/router is a 'g'. http://www.actiontec.com/products/product.php?pid=39 Almost all DSL modems contain a router. Almost, if not all, cable modems do not contain a router. It is a separate box. Cable is much faster than DSL, by the nature of shielded cable having more bandwidth than unshielded twisted pair (UTP). Peel back the insulation on the ethernet cable & see the twisting of the individual pairs. This is how the speed is determined. Fiberoptic is a completely different beast. It's called FIOS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verizon_FiOS Light has much greater bandwidth. See Internet speed tiers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_U-verse Cable is still faster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS Telephone uses RJ-11 connectors, ethernet uses RJ-45 connectors. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Registered_jack Router LAN ports are RJ-45. Sometimes they are a very tight fit. I've had some that were so tight, they would not release without pliers. Any cable that is that tight, I throw away. Thanks once again C_C. So from your info. 1) because I have DSL I'll be content with my 802.11g 2) I'll attach the RJ-45 connectors and run out the cable to test my laptop to see if the speeds increase before the actual install. 3) Because now I'm sure, I too will throw out any RJ-45 connector that gives me a problem. But I still have another question. I came across this. 568A vs 568B . Which conductor sequence do you suggest or does it matter?. 568A, uses the following manner from left to right: white-green, green, white-orange, blue, blue-white, orange, white-brown and brown. For standard cat 5 B connections, 568B, uses from left to right: white-orange, orange, white-green, blue, white-blue, green, white-brown and brown. overthehill Just before we leave the modem/router references. In my case the DSL provider (Distributel Canada) provided a dsl modem which would require a wired connection to a computer. Since i wanted to be able to access the service from many computers (up to 7) i wanted the ability to do so simultaneously and wirelessly from VARIOUS locations in the house. Thus it was my dime and necessity to purchase a router capable of transmission to the various computers. Because some computers were beyond good reception distance i then upgraded the provided antennae that came with the router to a more powerful one. My laptops had internal wi-fi capability built in but my desktops all required the purchase and installation of wireless adapters (also referred to as dongles). The laptop that I currently have is outdated (but still working fine) and we don't typically travel much. I would like the capability though to be able to use my laptop throughout the house. Like I mentioned I've just purchased a number of RJ-45 connectors and my neighbor loaned me a Belkin crimper. I'll uncoil the cable and give it a trial run to see if in fact my speeds increase when I'm at the far end of my home. If this shows any significant increase in speed I'll certainly install the cable. Don't know at the moment either how much I'm prepared to spend on any additional hardware to accommodate an outdated PC. Before too long I'll probably be forced to bite the bullet and get something new anyway. And by then, the whole picture will have changed. For now this is by far the easiest and least expensive option. PS; Not sure too, what a more powerful antennae would do to my sound system. The router as it stands sends a constant clunking noise to my speakers. Enough that I'm still attempting to find proper placement. Regards, overthehill In my case, I bought a router a few months before I even got internet; planning ahead, so to speak. I knew that if I got the internet first they'd either ding me for renting some crappy wireless-G router every month, or I'd have to get one anyway. So I got a rather nice Draft-N (wireless-N was draft at the time...) router, which also had gigabit LAN. I actually ran it wired only (though others in the house used the wifi and I didn't get any complaints) for about a year, until I got the laptop I'm typing on now, which I selected to have built-in wireless-N capability. The speed was really something; particularly network transfers between machines, which could use the full speed of the router. The internet itself was I believe 50mbps download and 10 mbps up. Quote from: overthehill on May 31, 2012, 06:30:37 PM PS; Not sure too, what a more powerful antennae would do to my sound system. The router as it stands sends a constant clunking noise to my speakers. Enough that I'm still attempting to find proper placement. You haven't really described the sound system... I guess it's wireless? If so you could probably change it to use a different frequency. I have interference problems, too; first, my wireless card that was in my PC would sometimes interfere with the audio card circuitry. I was able to mitigate it somewhat by rearranging the connections, but I only have a few PCI slots and both cards are PCI so I couldn't move them very far apart. More recently the wireless-N card seems to have died, and I removed it from that PC. The sound issues were far less, but they still exist. I was however able to actually trace it to the speaker system itself, which is just a 2.1 system with two speakers and a subwoofer. It has an external volume control, and moving this around would change the intensity of the interference, and covering it with a CD, tin foil, or other electrically reflective material would deaden it too. The applicability to your situation- first, you have to try to find where the interference is occuring (assuming changing frequencies doesn't resolve your issue). In my case that "weak point" is the weakly shielded volume control. Then you simply have to "shield" it somehow. in my case I was able to just move that control a bit. On the other hand, in my case I wasn't picking up interference from a nearby wireless router since it hasn't been connected in some time. I was picking up interference from other stuff, like wireless routers, USB hubs, the electric motor on a desk fan, my monitor, and my USB TV Tuner. The biggest interferer I found was with a HTC smartphone I used for tethered net access a few times, which was so loud I had to shut off the speakers for the duration. (Sticking a CD or other metallic "shield" between it and the volume control and all was silent again). Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 31, 2012, 07:10:49 PM
Thanks BC_ for your input. Actually the speaker system is an inexpensive older wired Altec Lansing VS2421. I've been very satisfied with this system considering the cost. Actually it's had pretty fair reviews. Never had a concern with the system until the router was installed. The noise that I'm complaining about can be eliminated by moving the speakers away from the router. They're not where I would prefer but much better than shutting the speakers off or listening to that constant noise. The router though must lay flat on my desk. If I was to put it in the stand or hang it higher on the wall that's probably where I'd be ,up the wall. As I mentioned if the speakers are a distance away from (or even if they are placed higher than) the router, the racket seems to be eliminated. Actually with the way it is now the sound is quite tolerable and I should be able to make it better. But I'm afraid if I was to install a more powerful antennae I'd have to put the speakers in another room or perhaps hang them from the ceiling? overthehill Quote from: overthehill on May 31, 2012, 08:12:24 PM Thanks BC_ for your input. That is the same sound system I have. The external volume control appears to be a weak point as far as shielding from interference goes. I thought it was the speakers in my case as well, but then when I put a CD on the volume control thing for a second I noticed that the MILD static dissappeared. I haven't had it close to an operating wireless router, but the wireless transmitter on my laptop seems to also cause interference (not as bad as the cellphone though). All interference seems to cease when I "shield" the volume control thing with something. If your interference is in fact between the router and speakers, you need to shield the speakers in some fashion. usually a metal component of some sort between the two would work too. If you get a better antenna it will likely be more mobile, so you could move it farther away. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 31, 2012, 08:53:54 PM That is the same sound system I have. (I would like the capability though to be able to use my laptop throughout the house. Like I mentioned I've just purchased a number of RJ-45 connectors and my neighbor loaned me a Belkin crimper. I'll uncoil the cable and give it a trial run to see if in fact my speeds increase when I'm at the far end of my home. If this shows any significant increase in speed I'll certainly install the cable.) Well I have no explanation for what took place. I got the connectors on the cable (approx.80 ft), ran the cable outside and connected it to my laptop. While connected the speeds were quite good(for my service anyway) 4.0 - 5.2 Mbps download. Wireless (again outside) ,2.0 - 3.0 down. At this point I thought that I had it made. Wrong. I brought the cable into the house, and ran it to the far end. Now wired, right around .8- 1.0 Mbps download. Totally disappointed. Connected wireless to the far end (inside) the numbers were very close to what they were outside. I couldn't understand this (still can't) so I went through the whole procedure again. Exactly the same results. How is it possible that when wired it works outside but not inside. Crazy. Just to check the router I took a 6ft. patch cable that I had , connected it to the router/ laptop and received a constant 6.4 Mbps. The same as what I receive from my wired desktop. At this point the only thing that I can think of doing is to cut off the connectors, check conds. for continuity, shorts and crosses (again) and replace the connectors. I do not have a tester. And, I realize that I could purchase a booster or ? to extend the range, but one day I may possibly want to put a wired desktop at the far end, so a cable would be nice. In any case, if not what I suggested, what else could the problem possibly be? overthehill PS Oh! and just for info., the cable is Outdoor Cat5e grease filled and when installing the connectors I followed the 568A standard. Update. Well I strung the cable (cat5e) and it works and it doesn't and I'm now sure that the problem is not the fault of the cable. If I remove the Ethernet cable from my desktop, use a coupler, then connect to my laptop(whether the Ethernet cable connected is 6ft. or 80 ft.) it works great. But, if the desktop is reconnected and another cable (whether 6ft. or 80 ft.) is plugged into the router(either port #1,#3 or #4) (port # 2 is used for the desktop) then connected to the laptop, speeds are less than 1.0 Mbps. I Emailed the manufacturer about this , got a response and no help whatsoever. Next I contacted my ISP support. He took met through all the hoops that he could think of and somehow finally got it to perform properly (then he quickly said good night). Not that he did anything , it was either feast or famine. Mostly famine. But as things started working properly (I'm sure a fluke) his suggestion was (should this happen again) remove the router from the surge protector, reboot the router and if the situation continues call back to (us) the ISP. So, as of now I'm not very confident that the problem has been solved? So to re-cap: if I remove the cable that goes to my desktop(from the router) and connect it to my laptop (no matter the length of cable) it works just fine. But if I reconnect the desktop as it was, then run a cable from another port to the laptop it's purely hit and miss.overthehill |

The WiFi was completely unusable until I changed the firmware. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/D-Link_DIR-632 The biggest knock about this router is it's frequent WIFI drops and lockups when using the stock firmware. Installing DD-WRT corrects this isssue. I had an older model that was given to me because the WiFi only worked some of the time. D-Link Customer Service is completely clueless. Got a replacement under warranty, same problem. It crashed, got a 3rd one.Interesting. Never had that problem with my old D-Link or my new one. I only had to buy a new one because the old one's ADSL modem no longer supported some change to the infrastructure my ISP made. I run my desktop wired, but my wife's desktop, my 2 laptops, my GALAXY tab, wife's iPhone, and her sister's laptop all run wireless and never had an issue in the house (or a few houses down).I have no problems at all with the DD-WRT firmware. The other issue was the factory firmware required the use of the D-Link Shareport software to access the router's USB port. This software was really bad & only allowed access by 1 computer at a time. The DD-WRT firmware has USB configuration built-in. I use an old WD Passport 60GB USB drive as a NAS drive. With a hub, you can add ADDITIONAL drives (even flash drives), all configured from the router firmware. It saved the purchase of a dedicated NAS drive. DIR-632 Wireless N 8-Port Router |

You can change the MAC address of your network card, either through software or hardware. I know linux provides it through a simple command... never had to do it with my windows machine. Quote My lease is a horses nose hair, keeps renewing itself every few hours.DHCP leases renew every hour. It has suddenly hit me that you might actually be complaining about a LAN IP address. eg. "I'm always 192.168.0.1!" Though I certainly hope that is not the case. Quote Talked with support and the said they cant do anything.Probably not at all. In retrospect, complaining that your IP address is always the same is pretty much like complaining that your home address or your SIN typically never changes. For services that usually have long-held IP addresses (such as cable, and I believe DSL) usually addresses are doled out as consumers subscribe to the service. Usually this "selection" is made when you are first hooked up; the technician will contact the switchboard or whatever they call it to give a new Serial number a new IP. When the cable modem connects the the cable backbone, it says "hi, my serial is ###" and then the cable backbone gives it the IP it was allotted. The idea is simply to prevent people from plonking a random cable modem and using the backbone without PAYING for the service, since it refuses to dole out IPs to modems whose serial is not in the system. Sometimes low-level changes in the system will "reset" the doled out IPs; either because the ISP bought a new subnet, or the system had a failure at some point that requires a renew. The Modem serials will still be in the system, and simply given different IPs at their next connection. The IPs are typically constant not to make it easier to "spy" on people or anything like that, but simply because the requirements for implementation are a myriad simpler than some "give them random IPs every time" architecture, which simply adds yet another point of failure. I'm not SURE how DSL does it, but one would imagine it has to do with the difference between having a SUBSCRIBER line (ie SL) and dialing up every time. Dial-up gives you a different IP address each time, most always-on connection types do not change the IP between sessions, by definition of being "always on". Quote I know charter does this on purpose, my friend had the same ip for 9 months!I had the same IP for three years. It was actually useful since I was able to properly filter my website's statistics to exclude me. They upgraded the software at some point which meant that IP's had to be reassigned and I ended up with a different one. Quote They are a corporation, $ is their businessNo, the product is internet service and you are the customer. I'm not even really sure how that sort of information would make them $, or more specifically how having a static IP address makes it any easier, since it all goes through the ISP regardless. You seem to be confusing ISP's with companies like Facebook and Google, for which their users are in fact their product to which they sell advertisers. However even in that case IP addresses don't play a very pivotal ROLE- usually they use HTTP headers for tracking, as far as I recall, though I have to admit that I prefer receiving targeted ads based on sites I visit (things like SQL server, Visual Studio, and stuff) rather than things like feminine hygiene products, which is why on the whole it doesn't bother me. Quote from: STC on June 08, 2012, 07:55:49 AM i need to know because i am bipolar and i get suicidal alot - i take meds and do everythign i am supposed to do That's just the policy of most online games, chat rooms, websites, or forums. If a user comes on there saying they're going to kill someone or kill themselves or starts bragging about some illegal activity or whatever, they will likely be reported by another user and the administrators will report it to the police, who will in turn investigate. It will happen on most any online game and it will happen here if ever comments of that sort are posted. Again, kind advice. I would find a hobby that you enjoy and can do in an environment where people know and understand what you're going through. It'll be less stressful on you. I'm sure any of us here can understand how addicting computers and the internet and all can be. I know you might enjoy it, but perhaps it's not the right thing for you. Read some books, build some models, take up painting or sculpting, or really any kind of creative outlet. No one will track you doing that, plus you get to do something rewarding and fun. And if you really must play computer games, then enjoy some offline games. There are plenty of those out there for whatever your gaming taste is. I completely understand what you're going through though. I have a very close relative who is the same. Yes, he is bipolar. He had the same kind of paranoia, especially about the internet. For the most part, he finally unplugged except for email to friends and family. He took up photography and model trains and camping with his dogs. It has really changed him and done him a world of good. |

Solve : Tabbed Browsing - Internet Explorer? |
Answer» I have recently had massive volumes of data downloaded without me being on-line. I know that one does not have to be at one's machine for downloads to happen, but my problem seems different. I have been unable to find any users stealing bandwidth (though that POSSIBILITY still exists). Have run several virus/trojan/etc programs and no threats found. BUT what I have found is that if I open internet sites separately, my router does its usual handshaking for a few seconds. Quite normal. However, if I USE TABBED browsing to get to the homepages of the same sites, the W/LAN light goes on flashing and simply will not stop until I have closed down all but one of the sites. I have done this about a dozen times and I get the same result. Could tabbed browsing be responsible in some way?Tabbed browsing is a feature that enables you to open multiple websites in a single browser window. If multiple websites are loading, regardless of "homepages of the same sites", they will still eat large bandwidth usage that might cause your W/LAN light goes on flashing. Thanks again gh. What I didn't make clear in my first post was that the flashing goes on "for ever" - even when all the 4 sites that I have tabbed have finished opening their homepages. When I say "for ever" I mean hours and hours. It only stops when I have closed all but one of the sites' homepages. Thanks again gh. Perhaps Windows was installing updates, along with other software / antivirus programs? What are you using to monitor the bandwith usage? Solve : loopback address question? |
Answer» I've been learning a bit of networking and running through tutorials, the only problem is i'm none the wiser about the loopback address. Especially when configuring routers with OSPF. All the tutorials i've gone through says "Configure OSPF on router0 with an area id of 1 and use network address 172.18.0.0/24" , no problem, i understand all that. Then it says "Configure a loopback interface on Router0 with an ip address of 10.1.27.252 255.0.0.0". Where do they get that address from?? All the examples on the internet do not EXPLAIN where the loopback addresses, that they provide, comes from. When i google it, i just get explanations about the 127.0.0.1........ i'm stumped Recently, in many areas, IP address on the Internet are now IPv6 winch specifies a long address. Have you already read some of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6 Quote The decision to put a 32-bit address space on there was the result of a year's battle among a bunch of engineers who couldn't make up their minds about 32, 128, or variable-length. And after a year of fighting, I said—I'm now at ARPA, I'm running the program, I'm paying for this stuff, I'm using American tax dollars, and I wanted some progress because we didn't know if this was going to work. So I said: OK, it's 32-bits. That's enough for an experiment; it's 4.3 billion terminations. The 32 bits are still used on a LAN. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 14, 2012, 11:38:11 AM The 32 bits are still used on a LAN. erm, thanks? not sure what that has to do with my question though. Unless you think i'm ASKING "Where do ip addresses come from" Which, of course, i'm not. I'm asking how to work out a loopback address, because all the tutorials i've done, whether from cisco or found on the internet, never explain 'where' the address comes from they just say, "enter this address xxx.xxx.x.x as a loopback"You asked Quote ... ip address of 10.1.27.252 255.0.0.0". Where do they get that address from??What kind of answer do you want. The form 255.255.255.255 is a four byte Octet that often used to represent an ip address in IPv4 usage. I do not understand what "address xxx.xxx.x.x " means. Is that a standard notation or something you invented? Quote Octet (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Ar this time, 64 bits are used to program equipment IPv6 and notation now is often given in hexadecimal instead of decimal. Yes, i know what an IPv4 and IPv6 address is. I'm not after 'the origin of ip addresses' ok, In all the tutorials that i've completed, they always say things like "enter <10.10.10.1> as the loopback on router 1" or "use <12.12.12.1> as loopback on the New York router". What they do not explain IS how they come up with these addresses. It just seems as if the addresses that are given in the tutorials are being plucked out of the air. I do not see any correlation between the loopback addresses given and the, say network address etc. Now when i use Packet tracer ( a logical network simulator) to practice configuring networks and i want to configure a router with a loopback address. Where do i get this address from. How is it calculated? Yes, it would be helpful if the examples reflected what is going on in the real world. The notations used by engineers and technicians cause a lot of confusion if they are not well documented. Sorry if I am no help. Myself, I would red line that exercise and move on. It might be a type of a badly formed question. When IPv6 address are given they are not supposed to be in that kind of notation unless an explanation is provided. Quote An IPv6 address is REPRESENTED as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits, each group representing 16 bits (two octets). The groups are separated by colons [:]. An example of an IPv6 address is:It would seem your tutorial is not holding to published notations. But I am often WRONG. In the context of your question, your simply assigning a real IP address to a loopback interface. Hence 127.0.0.1 is the address of the device and 10.1.27.252 is also the address of the device. Loopback can be used as a non-physical interface - i.e. it is not used with a network or network port. It's a logical interface only.Rob Pomeroy, please note context is: Quote configuring routers with OSPFWhich is defined by Cisco for their products. http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Computer_Science/2006/OSPF_Routing.asp But if you understand what he wants, please continue. I am totally lost! Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on May 16, 2012, 03:12:01 AM In the context of your question, your simply assigning a real IP address to a loopback interface. Hence 127.0.0.1 is the address of the device and 10.1.27.252 is also the address of the device. Loopback can be used as a non-physical interface - i.e. it is not used with a network or network port. It's a logical interface only. ok Rob, so if i wanted to configure ospf by creating a loopback, i first configure the router with an area id and network address, then do i just 'make up' a loopback address? Without seeing the tutorial you're working through, I'd struggle to guess where the 172.18.0.0/24 and 10.1.27.252/8 come from. I imagine these are within the a wider private network design. PERSONALLY, I've never had cause to use (or learn about) OSPF, so beyond answering the loopback question above, I probably can't help further, sorry. There's a good write-up here, though, which may shed some light on the use of loopback in this scenario: http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Computer_Science/2006/OSPF_Routing.asp Cheers Rob |

Solve : LAN between PCs having LINUX(Fedora) & Windows XP? |

Answer» Is it possible to built a LAN where a PC will work as a server and its OS will be LINUX (Fedora) whereas other PCs having Windows XP Professional as OS and will work as the terminals of the server. The server will be accessed by the terminals through a web browser. Please help! Quote Is it possible to built a LAN where a PC will work as a server and its OS will be LINUX (Fedora)Yes, you can have a Fedora/Linux PC perform server functions for windows clients when all of the computers are on the same LAN Quote whereas other PCs having Windows XP Professional as OS and will work as the terminals of the server. What type of terminal? 1) Text-based (shell), yes. 2) Graphical-based, yes. 3) Full thin-client (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thin_client) - that's a bit more tricky but possible with the right hardware. Quote The server will be accessed by the terminals through a web browser.Depends on what you want to access via the web browser. Most likely - you only want to access web sites, but there are some applications that allow you to manage your sever though the browser (webmin). If you want to access a graphical interface through a browser - the only option I know of is like a VNC applet within a browser window (It is just easier to run with the stand alone VNC client). The term "server" it is really a vague reference. A server is really a service that runs on a computer - a "server service". These services can be a lot of different things (Web Server {apache/httpd}, File Server {SAMBA}, FTP Server {vsftpd or pureftpd}, DNS Server {bind}, DHCP Server, etc.) If you're looking for a desktop-like environment, you may check out VNC or NX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_technology), which are both a lot like Windows Remote Desktop. Keep in mind that everything has their own benefits and limitations.I would just add to the above excellent suggestions: TRY using WebMin for remote admin. And read the DOCUMENTS on using Samba as a DOMAIN controller. |

Solve : Can't access gateway.2wire.net, but internet works.? |
Answer» Hello. Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : gateway.2wire.netNone of the above are the control panel address for the two-wire. Did you setup this modem in the beginning? Did you not write down the information you need? Do you have the documentation? Please supply the model number and somebody can help you find the documentation that explains how to get to the router. BTW: when you want to get into the router, you should do this: A Unplug the router from the PHONE line. B Plug only one computer into the router. C Restart the computer. D Restart the Rutter by unplugging it for 20 seconds, then plug in back into the wall outlet. These steps are not always needed, but when things don't work that is what they tell you to do if you call tech support. I think the control panel for a two-wire is: 192.168.1.1 You also need the username and password. The documentation needed to confirm this. If you had changed it, you should have LEFT a note in the manual.2Wire Modem/Router IP address is: 192.168.2.254I forgot to mention, when the router was set up, I could access the control panel easily by typing the router IP address into my browser, which is as in the above, 192.168.1.254. I did supply the model number, it's a AT&T Gateway 2wire 2701HG-B. Also I have the manual, and all it says is for me to type in http://gateway.2wire.net to an internet browser, and it would take me to the control panel. I have already unplugged and replugged the router, as I said, and I did restart the computer.OK. Here is how I just now did a log in to a me 2-Wire out of the box. I turned off the wireless on my laptop I plug Ethernet cable into laptop and enabled Ethernet. Turn on the2 Wire. I open Internet Explore and let it try my home page. Error messages shows the router given error page. (My Ererhnet NIC is set for auto DNS.) The new 2-wire router showed the save gateway address you gave when I go go to router home page. This one is a 2701HG-B and came from AT&T a few weeks ago. Computer_Commando is right. The 2-wire is at: http://192.168.1.254/ Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 18, 2012, 09:50:12 PM Computer_Commando is right. The 2-wire is at:I already tried that. It is the gateway IP address: Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254 It does not work. Also, I forgot to mention I get a 404 in Internet Explorer when trying to access gateway.2wire.net, or 192.168.1.254 . In Firefox, I just get a blank white page, not a "Server not Found" error. The picture looks like how the control panel should. As a last resort, you can force a ;'hard reset' on the router. It is a little hole with a red edge. on the back of the router. STICK a bent paper clip in there for about 10 secs, I recall. This pits everything back to factory. Esit: a pencil works too. The first one, as usual, gave a blank page with no errors, except on IE8, where it gave me a 404 error. The manual says that it should revert to one of the factory IP for local network after you hold the reset button for several seconds with the power on. But that also wipes out some other settings. So you have to get the password for the PPP from your ISP. EDIT: If the problem persists, check the power brink and SEE if it is doing its job. Otherwise, the 2wire 2701HG-B may be at the end of its life. |

Solve : Internet access NOT needed...but LAN has challenges? |
Answer» Our company recently purchased a wireless broadband router, the EDIMAX 3G-6200n for use in our farm office premises. i would first like to point out that we only need it for networking our office computers, not for Internet access. Each of our computers has it's own separate Internet access modem. our location is somewhat beyond the reach of most mobile Internet Providers, so we have only 2 choices of which internet to access. Due of the remoteness of our location, the connections are also weak and tenuous at times, so it would make no sense to hook the modem (which WORKS on CDMA) to the router as a central access point for all the PCs. The number of computers on the network is actually 3 desktops, 2 of which use Win7 and one that uses XP. Sometimes we also have 2 laptops in the office used by our boss who shuttles from our main office to the farm. As the Admin and IT Manager, I was asked to hook the router to my PC (Win7). The Farm Manager (who is my immediate Boss) uses the other Win7 PC located in the inner office. We purchased and installed a wireless networking card for that computer. When I first installed the Router, his PC was immediately able to see and discern the router as "ESSID" and gave me an option to connect. I could see my PC on his network in the "Control Panel". Initially, I could also see his and even print through his PC on his laser printer - wireless. However, I cannot see the XP on the network, which is physically located on the same desk as mine. I have connected that one to the router via networking cable. The XP PC tells me the LAN is connected, however, when I ping the XP, it never reaches it (same vice versa). There is a printer connected to the XP which I want to access through the router as well as many files which I do not have on my PC. 1. Is it merely a matter of upgrading the XP to 7? can it work if I do not upgrade? 2. Why is it that I cannot see my own PC on the network on my own PC? 3. How do I avoid the Internet option on the Wizard provided since i do not need it, and how do I avoid the computer asking me to connect to the VPN when it is already connected? Hope you can help me out. Thanks.Let's try to address the main issue - the windows XP machine not being able to access the LAN. You should not have to upgrade XP to Win 7 in order to make this work. Win 7 has much better plan-n-play options for networking than XP, but they can both do the same stuff. When you say that the XP PC cannot ping the Win 7 PC - it makes me wonder what the addressing is among the various PCs. As all of these are on the same network, they should share the same IP subnet. When you added a router into the mix, it will have its own IP address as it is expecting to share the internet that it sounds like you'll not be WANTING here. According to the manual for your router, the router's subnet is as follows: Code: [Select]Subnet: 192.168.2.x Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router's IP: 192.168.2.1 If you go onto one of your Windows 7 PCs, you should see something like this in the output of "ipconfig /all" in a command prompt: Code: [Select]C:\Windows\System32>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : <COMPUTER NAME> Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node TYPE . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : <DNS NAME IF CONFIG'D> Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 5: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connectio n - VLAN : Untagged VLAN Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPV6 Address . . . . . : fe80::28b9:30e4:effc:6c9b%38(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.3(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Verify the IP address and ensure the PC is in the subnet we think it is. Now lets do this: 1. Verify the WinXP machine is plugged into the port 1, or 2, or 3, or 4 on the router 2. Run IPCONFIG in the Command Prompt and see what IP address the PC has - verify: a) it is in the same subnet (192.168.2.x) b) it has the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0) c) it has a default gateway of the router (192.168.2.1) d) verify DHCP enabled is YES 3. If this all checks out, make sure the XP machine can ping itself "ping 192.168.2.xxx" where xxx is the IP from the ipconfig output 4. See if the XP machine can ping the router "ping 192.168.2.1" If anything fails... Try to setup a static IP on the XP machine 1. My Computer 2. My Network Places 3. View Network Connections 4. Right-Click NIC (Local Area Connection) 5. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" 6. Click Properties NOTE: This section should currently all be setup to "Obtain automatically" 7. Tell it to use the following IP address a) IP Address... Same subnet (192.168.2.x) with the last octet being a number from 1 > 254 that doesn't conflict with anything b) Subnet Mask (255.255.255.0) c) Default Gateway (Router's IP - 192.168.2.1) 8. Tell to use the following DNS Servers Router's IP address again 192.168.2.1 9. Try a different port on the router. 10. Try a different physical cable. 11. Try to do a "repair" on the Local Area Connection" in My Network Places" > Network Connections Note: All of these options in 7 & 8 should match the Win 7 Machine except the last octet in the ip address Repeat the ping test. If you still can't get anywhere. Post the output of "arp -a" from the XP machine AND the Win 7 machine. |

Solve : Buying a modem? |
Answer» HELLO, I want to buy a modem for internet that I can use with any service provider, instead of paying monthly for renting their modem. Is this possible? I have READ the CH INFORMATION on modems but I find it rather complicated. At the moment I am renting from "Bell" and I think it is called a wireless modem. Thank you. What part of the world do you live? Give model model number of 'Bell' modem. I am in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The bell model number is 2701HG-G. SSID = BELL 641OK. That is a Two-Wire model made for the phone company. I have had two nor three of those kind. Here is a link: How to Set Your Bell 2Wire 2701Hg G The link is about a special feature of that modem/router combo. You can extend its wireless rage as a 'bridge'. If you buy one from a vendor, be aware the the vendor might not be able to help you with the installation. The phone company has special settings and a password needed for your account. Here in the USA I bout a replacement router that was a different brand, yet the phone company was able to set it by remote control. Thank you for the information. What it boils down to is that, if you buy from a vendor, you may or may not be able to use it with your Internet provider? Am I right here? Quote from: floccinaucini on April 29, 2012, 05:32:44 AM Thank you for the information. What it boils down to is that, if you buy from a vendor, you may or may not be able to use it with your Internet provider? Am I right here? The best thing to do would be call your service provider and see what they say about using a THIRD party modem. There is no point in buying something just to find out you can't use it.It seems that normally Bell Canada supply their own modem and bill you for rental; they may permit you to use your own DSL device but they will still include the rental in your monthly bill. It's in the contract and you won't get a reduction for using your own equipment. They will still send you one of their modems and charge you for the rental of that modem, whether you want to use it or not. You have no choice in that matter. The latest info I have FOUND says the rental cost is $3.95/month plus GST and PST and incorporated into your monthly bill. This monthly rental is not optional. If you deduct it they will put you in collections. Maybe you could look at other ISPs, e.g. Rogers or Golden Triangle. Thank you everyone. Lesson learned. You are at the mercy of the ISP and there is no circumventing that! Best regards to all. |

Solve : My wireless dont work with a new Modem? |

Solve : My computer is... but only mine is?? |
Answer» Hi, im new here. reinstalledWhat? The PC is only a few months old? Why did you re-install? That is not the right procedure for a new PC under warranty. Please provide more details about your computer and the OS. i thought that it would fix the problem, is there anything wrong with reinstalling your computer? Acer Aspire 6750 5,9 Windows experience Inrel(R) Core(TM) i5-2450 CPU 2.50 ghdz 8 GB RAM 64 bit operativsystemSometimes that works. But if there was a problem with the computer it would be best to have the maker fix it. Example: If the hard drive awns failing, doing the install again may cover over the problem for a few days, then it will come back avian. But returning it to the maker they would do diagnostics and maybe give you a new computer. Or just replace the Hard Drive with the system fresh on it. But the problem may be in the network controller. You can't really fix that or make any temporary fix. It is best to use your warranty while you have it. Later is too late.okay thanks man, thats what i though aswell,... but it worked perfect first 2 months? what can cause this .. Quote from: MeowImQh on April 28, 2012, 08:51:44 PM okay thanks man, thats what i though aswell,...Anything. Besides major things a common problem is defective minor components, like capacitors. interface chips or even the EPROM that holds the BIOS. It is not practical to 100% certify every component in commercial equipment. And some problems do not show up until the thing is in use for many days.At the factory they limit testing to 24 hoers or less. Contact the maker for return instructions. You have to ship it back the way they say. Unless a local STORE will handle lit. |

Solve : Enter Network Password popup? |
Answer» This popup box keeps . . popping up! It asks me to enter network password. I kill it but it keeps coming back at random. My cable provider says I need to contact the wireless router manufacturer (Netgear). This problem occurred last year and then it stopped of it own accord. How can I keep the box from appearing? Thx, Micromos Two details. The bad guys are drooling over all the delicious info they can suck from your ever-growing wireless network. Where once there were only computers and servers to steal information from now there are dual-mode cell phones (that often seek the nearest WiFi connections without your approval or knowledge); Blu-ray players and gaming consoles that connect to the Internet; tables; laptops ... virtually everything you do, everything you know, everything that defines the essence of you is contained NEATLY on your network. Not just tasty tidbits of info for a bad guy to snack on, but a full-on, table-covered feast!Hardware vendors are now making it hard for you to have an insecure network. You have to prove ownership of the router. The Netgear is a N-150 WNR1000. I don't know how to answer the next two questions. I just plug the cable provider cable into the router and then to my windows 7 laptop. Sorry about not knowing. Isn't permission granted to use the router when I bought it?Yours is the 150 and mine is the 300. Main difference is speed. The new Nether rooters will nag you if there has been some kind of change in the system that would indicate you are no the owner of the device. There is another security feature taht proves you are in poses ion of the router. As the link I gave suggests, somebody near your house might 'crack' hour wireless password. But the other security thing a hacker can not get to. Read the documentation. You will need to have physical access to the router and maybe a flashlight. Once you have DONE that procedure, you should not have any more problems. But if you think the router is weird, call the 800 number, 1 888 638 4327 and maybe they can help. If you have the documentation it is very clear about the initial security protocol. Once it is setup, you don't have to do it again. Unless there is some issue about physical intrusion. You didn't steal the router, did you? I called Netgear support and they want $39 to help. Can't I just uninstall and reinstall with the Netgear disc? Quote from: micromos on April 19, 2012, 03:04:10 PM This popup box keeps . . popping up! Screenshot? Doesn't sound like it's coming from your router. Quote from: micromos on April 19, 2012, 04:55:37 PM The Netgear is a N-150 WNR1000. I don't know how to answer the next two questions. I just plug the cable provider cable into the router and then to my windows 7 laptop. Sorry about not knowing. Isn't permission granted to use the router when I bought it?If you don't use the wireless capability of your router, disabling wireless communication would be wise. This prevents anyone from outside trying to get a wireless connection from your router. Quote from: micromos on April 21, 2012, 11:41:31 AM I called Netgear support and they want $39 to help. Can't I just uninstall and reinstall with the Netgear disc? That should work. You will need to have at hand all your settings. Preferably, you should have already written the settings in your QUICK setup guide. As to the 'pop up', can you tell which program is throwing the 'pop up'? What kind of security do you have? Once you have done the proper steps, you unshod not see anymore nags from then rooter or the program that controls the connection. Unless there is a major change to your computer., like installing a new physical or software network connection. Or adding a new user. Thanks to everyone for their help. I think I found the answer. Try this: Click - Control Panel/Networking & Sharing Center/change advance settings/password protection sharing/turnoff protected sharing/save. It didn't work until I rebooted. Micromos |
