Solve : how to track wi-fi users?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

Pls HELP me out ..how to track wi-fi users coz my NET is very slow and it takes lots of TIME to DISPLAY web-page.I think my password has been cracked by some one..Without changing password how can I stop wi-fi users.

Thank uPerhaps you should change passwords atleast twice a month or use a better encryption security such as WPA/WPA2.MAC filtering provides some security.  MAC addresses can be spoofed, but anyone that desperate to gain access to your wireless network will probably be able to eventually anyway.

You'll need to read your router's manual to know how to do this.Thank u..I will TRY to change my password periodically..

Solve : Can't download or stream?

Answer»

I believe i'm in the right place. My computer can't stream or download shows, games, MOVIES, etc. If i'm on youtube the VIDEO starts streaming and then stops at the one minute mark. I have wireless internet but it ALWAYS says the network is good. I have cleared both my history and chache but nothing has HAPPENED. I also did a virus check. I don't know what else to do.

Solve : Wifi connection problems??

Answer»

I am having wifi connection problems with my Mac book it is asking for a wep password but we only have a security password, my IPHONE will connect using the security code but the Mac books won't ACCEPT it?? Please help meThe router's current security encryption type is on WEP, if the macbook is configured on WPA or WPA2, you will not be able to access your home network. Change the router 's WEP to WPA/WPA2 and CHECK what is currently being used or supported by your airport wifi adapter. Just match both the DEVICE and the adapter and enter the correct key or password.

Solve : Problem with Bravia TV, Westell Modem and Windows Media Server?

Answer»

This is going to be a long post!

Thanks in advance , this is my last resort. I have tried support from my ISP (Centurylink), SONY and Westell. My problem seems to be beyond their scope of support.

I was forced to upgrade to a DIFFERENT modem a few months ago, when I paid for a faster speed that my FIRST gen modem couldn't handle. The good news is I have a great 10 meg connection that is very reliable and now my Netflix streams on our Sony Bravia TV with out re-buffering.  I now have a Westell 7500 modem/wireless router combo. Like I said in theory it works well and eliminates the old router as well.  With my old set up I could view my pictures and video from my PC , on the Bravia using WMP as a media server. It was automatically identified after I allowed the proper sharing setting.

Since installing the Westell 7500 I can no longer see my files from the Bravia TV. I can log into the modem/router with the admin program and can identify all my devises, Laptop, Desktop and printer . They are listed by IP address, I have a static IP for the modem and my laptop(that I want to access) I have tried to learn about port forwarding and attemped several configurations with out any luck.

On the TV I run Server DIAGNOSTICS and it reports no server found. It does see my Westell router and says it is not DLNA compliant. I have tried to enable UPnP for the TV but not SURE what address to use or ports..... I guess I am going around in circles now, I have tried so many things. Disabled the fire wall ( McAfee), opened several ports know for WMP.

I need a comprehensive list of instructions, if this modem/router will work at all for this server. Maybe I am wasting my time, but I am getting very near the end of my rope...

Thanks again, Larry

My system

Dell 1764 Laptop w/Win 7
Westell 7500 versalink modem/router
Bravia lcd TV with wired direct connection to the router (Netflix works great)
McAfee Anti virus plus with personal firewall

static IP 10.0.0.1 for modem
static IP 10.0.0.35 TV
static IP 10.0.0.150 for laptop
Have you set up your WMP's configuration similar to this:
http://www.agoraquest.com/viewtopic.php?topic=35037&forum=70

Can you ping the Bravia from your computer?I have checked and double checked my settings for WMP and sharing. I am using Win 7 and WMP 12, this set up worked initially with my previous modem and linksys router. The problem seems to be with the Westell combo not allowing the connection. I was able to ping the Bravia TV (10.0.0.35) and it returned a message "success".

From all that I have read my issue is with port forwarding. My problem is I don't really know what port it uses and which IP to use (the TV, My Laptop or the router ?) I have tried several different configurations and none allow the TV to see my laptop.

Thanks for the suggestion.Break Through!

After checking everything again, I went to the portfarwarding.com website and re-read the proceedure for my particular modem/router. I decided to set port 80 up for forwarding I allowed both protocols and assigned it to the IP of the Bravia TV(10.0.0.35), then I still had to disable the MacAfee firewall . Going to the network menu on the Bravia, it recognized my PC and files. I will now work on the firewall setup.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Solve : Router with Clear wimax usb mobile. Connecting?

Answer»

Ok this is probably going to be simple, but..I have a linksys wrt54g v5 on a dektop. I have a Clear WIMAX usb device (suppose to be for portables, laptop) I have it installed on the desk top, works fine.

Q: how do I get the wireless ROUTER to go thru to clear? Remember the clear is a USB connection, no 45 connector.
I thought you have it installed and works fine already.
Quote

I have it installed on the desk top, works fine.
Usually after installing the driver, on the usb adapter icon , you search for the router/home network ID.
Hi thanks for responding. I have the usb "antenna" attached to my desktop and it works for the desktop. When I try to install a simple linksys wireless router it KILLS my connection to the internet. Probably because...

1. the cabling of the router is such...cable from router to cpu as is correct. check done.
2. cable from modem (which is the clear wimax antenna) not done. It is a usb device, the router takes a RJ45 cat5, so there is nothing "in" to the router.

so I'm guessing that when you install a router it takes the place of the internet connection in. and then looks for it to be plugged into itself.

BUT the clear antenna is still connected to the computer, I'm guessing that there is some settings WITHIN networking or the router itself that can be set to "see" this.

Do you see?

thanks Quote

Are you connecting the router by your ISP modem? I understand you WANT the desktop to be wireless but what is the antenna then for? I am just trying to set up a wireless router to the desktop where my clear device is connected and currently works, I am doing this so I can have wireless access to internet for multiple laptops.

Solve : Router Problem... possibly?

Answer»

I have a 2MB connection (with Plusnet, supposedly up to 15MB), but can't even get 512kbps on my laptop (Dell Studio 1558, running Win 7) so can't watch youtube videos or the like. However, on my other laptop (Alienware... can't remember the model, running XP) I get speeds in excess of 2MB no problem watching videos.

Only thing I think is going on is the Alienware is connected to my Belkin Router/Modem and my Dell laptop is connected to the internet through it's WLAN card... even though it's the Dell laptop the router was originally installed on. NATURALLY, I'm really puzzled and I don't know enough about computers to even work out what this could be.

Recently, I noticed when I was trying to figure out what was going on that my Belkin Router monitoring thingy was grey and that instead of the network I'm connected to it's SAYING "unknown" and when I tried connected to my router with an Ethernet cable, it isn't coming up as connected (my wireless signal doesn't change to the little wired picture).

I've tried googling the problem but I can't seem to find anything that SOUNDS like this so... very confused. To me it seems like for whatever reason my Dell laptop isn't recognising my router but still connecting to the internet using it's wireless card. All drives and firmwire is up to date.

Help?

Is the 512 kbps speed for your laptop on wireless or wired connection? How were you able to monitor your internet connection speed on both computers? Try speedtest.net to check on your upload/download speed and post the result.I can't get my router connected to the Dell laptop, when I connect it via the Ethernet cable nothing happens, it still 'runs' from a wireless signal. I don't understand why this is as originally I had it 'wired' in order to set up the network...! I tried turning off the wireless on the laptop and then plugging in the Ethernet cable but nothing happened.

Dell:

Alienware

Both laptops are in the same room (ONE on the desk) and connected to the same router, so I really don't understand how I'm getting two very different speeds. As you can see from the time, it's the same on both (12:26AM), I sat them next to each other and hit "begin" at the same time (could the speed test be affected greatly by the server, one is Skipton the other is Lancaster?)

Could it be something to do with the internal wireless card? The Dell laptop has a WLAN Wireless 1397 Mini-Card, and the Alienware has a Intel PROset. Everything seems up to date.Surely my Dell laptop is older and slower that yours. I have DSL and use wireless 802.11 to connect from the  combo router to the Dell.

Let my suggest that you use the Crisco* Network Magic trial just to see if there is an obvious solution to the problem. It is quicker that spending hurs trying different tricks.

BTW: There is, so far, not free software that even cokes close to the Crisco* PRODUCT. And no, I don't have stock in Crisco. Wish I did.

What happens exactly when you connect to LAN and starts browsing? Try doing the speedtest with only the Dell laptop connected wireless. Are you sure your wifi network is secured? Posting the Dell laptop model would determine the capability of your laptop. My first thought was that someone else was on my network but I checked and it's still secure. I used the programme that Geek-PM suggested and it's only showing both laptops (and the printer) on the network, no one else.

Nothing happens when I'm connected with the LAN cable, I turned off the wireless on the laptop to see it would connect that way but it wouldn't.

Dell is a Studio 1558
Intel Core i5 M 520 2.4GHz
4GB RAM
Windows 7Home Edition (64bit)

I'm going to try reinstalling the router at the weekend as it's probably worth a try. What Belkin router model are you using? I do not have or used any Belkin router, so I am not familiar with that image you have posted. But most likely they are self-explanatory. If the other computer can access by LAN or wired while the Dell cannot but previously worked, we might need some information from your IP configuration. Will wait what happens after resetting the Belkin router.
I have a Belkin Play Wireless-N Dual Band ASDL Modem Router (F7D4402 v1)

Friend suggested I change the wireless channel, so I've done that. Nothing seems to have changed.

Re-installed router software, hasn't changed the none-showing of the network in the grey box thingy but does seem to have fixed the not working as a wired connection problem. This hasn't changed the quality of the connection. Doesn't explain why my other laptop gets a much better connection though!!

Think I might have to get an engineer out to look at my phone line, the line test says I'm capable of 5MB but that's not happening.

Thanks for the help though ) Quote
Re-installed router software
This could be the problem but not sure yet. You could actually configure the router settings manually without running any cd software from the device. Just have to check if there is a manual online for that particular model.

Ok, have you run speedtest again on wired and wireless with only the particular laptop connected on the network? Let us see if there is any improvement from the results. What is your actual subscribed bandwith connection speed?Hi,

No change in the speed when connected via the ethernet cable. I pay for a "up to 5MB" connection from Plusnet, I'm thinking of switching but I doubt that it'll change much. The line test I did suggested that my line is capable of these speeds so I don't know if I need to get an engineer to take a look in case there is something physically wrong with the line or if I need to get a new modem/router.

You have varying connection speeds I cannot fully understand.
1. Did you ran speedtest with only the Dell machine connected?
2. Is wireless connection secured for there might be outside users connecting to your network?
3. What protection softwares are installed?
1) Speedtest with Dell 'wired' to the router.
2) I changed the password just in case someone had somehow got onto the network, ran speedtest again - still the same. Even made sure the guest option was turned off.
3) I have McAfree

I checked my package details with Plusnet, they say everything is "up to 20MB", the BT line test I've done (and they've done) says I'm capable of "up to 5MB" (think when I first joined Plusnet it was "up to 2MB", I find all these different speeds a bit confusing sometimes!!!) Either way, I'm not even getting close to these speeds. It usually takes 2hrs to download a podcast, it's quite depressing at times.

I looked at the networks my laptop could "see", there's about 6 - is it possible that the channel I'm on has a lot of traffic and this is causing low speeds? I'm a bit tempted to switch to BT and go fibre optic but kinda worried I'm going to end up paying a lot of money for something that's just as bad as my current situation.

Yes, that can explain everything.

Why go to BT?  That would not solve the witless issue, -Right?

How far is you laptop from the router? Try it closer to the router just to see what happens, Get within about 3 or 5 meters. (About 10 to 15 feet.)  With no walls in the way. Does that help? Quote
3) I have McAfree
This might shed some light to your problem. Do you have the trial or paid software package? Do you see the protection features of Mcafee enabled such as firewall, real-time, anti-spam, phishing in the control settings? My McAfree is part of a 1yr free subscription deal I got with my laptop. I tried turning it off the other day when it estimating 2hrs for a 29MB podcast, things didn't seem to improve. I think the only thing I have switched off is the parental controls. Do you think it's worth uninstalling McAfree to see if it is this causing the problems? I'm planning to go back to AVG or Avast once my McAfree expires.

Solve : Connecting computers and sharing internet?

Answer»

Hello to all of the forum
I have a dell insperon laptop, 32 bit windows vista, and a compac desktop, 64 bit windows 7

I have the laptop connected to the INTERNET, and i would like to use ethernet to connect the desktop to the laptop, and to use this connection to connect to the internet via the laptop.
What SETTINGS do i need to go through to enable this connection?

Thanks for looking, and if you have any questions, please FEEL free to ask. You need to get a broadband router
https://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=broadband+router&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGLL_en-GBUS430US394&ie=UTF-8The laptop s connected wirelessly to a router, but this desktop is across the house from this router, so i was thinking i could just wire it to the laptop that is connected and use that to share the connection. Since you already have a wireless router, the simplest solution would be to get a USB wireless adapter for the desktop.  There are dozens available from many VENDORS (Newegg, Amazon, Staples, etc.), just take your pick.

Solve : Wireless Network -- FreeBSD 9.0?

Answer»

I decided to try out the FreeBSD operating system, so I originally installed it in a VirtualBox machine and found that I kind of liked it (despite having to wait so long to compile things and being unable to figure out how to use pkg_add).
Now I am trying to get a FreeBSD system set up on my desktop, but I cannot get the wireless card to work quite right.

I need to connect to a PEAP authenticated NETWORK.
The wireless card is D-Link DWA-140 REV B, which means that it uses the rt2870 chipset...
The version of FreeBSD is FreeBSD 9.0 RC2.

Any help would be much appreciated--I've tried READING through a few things, and only came out more confused. Here are the contents of my /boot/loader.conf file:

Quote

if_run_load="YES"
runfw_load="YES"

And here are the contents of my /etc/rc.conf file:

Quote
hostname="WTBSD"
sshd_enable="YES"
ntpd_enable="NO"
wlans_run0="wlan0"
ifconfig_wlan0="ssid PurpleNet DHCP"

When I run IFCONFIG, INFORMATION does appear for wlan0, but I have not been able to figure out how to set it up to work with a PEAP network...

Solve : multiple connection?

Answer»

we have fixed and MOBILE wireless, and dsl connections at home in case any of the services is down, there would be backup. So most of the time the fixed wireless is not used which is KINDA wasteful. Is there a way i could get the fixed wireless and dsl to intertwine as one CONNECTION directly to the computer? It was possible back then for two dialup phone lines to act as one connection for FASTER speed. So im just wondering if i could do this using dsl and fixed wireless. We have a hub which only supports one data-in, or whatever it is called. Thanks in advance.NoYes?

Solve : Wireless connection drops every few minutes?

Answer»

Hi all

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop & I am having a problem staying connected to a wireless connection. It is running on XP SP3. There is a Broadcom wlan utility managing the connection. I have a 3g TP-Link router & have used WPA encryption. The wifi will connect, but will drop after about 5 minutes. It will then reconnect automatically & then drop again after a further 5 mins. I went into the settings for the utility manager & unchecked "let the utility manage the network", but then there is an icon saying "acquiring network address". I think the problem only AROSE  when I used the WPA encripion.

Thanks for your help.
It only happens when using WPA? Can you go into your router config and set the encryption setting to WEP and see if the connection drops again? I HIGHLY doubt its the encryption causing the problem, though...

If you let windows manage your WiFi connection, does the problem persist? Does "Acquiring Network Address" eventually complete?
Are there any issues if you use a direct wired connection to your router? If possible could you get hold of a wireless dongle and check if the connection still drops?Hello Transfusion

If I REMOVE encryption altogether through the router settings, the connection is stable. If I connect the usb dongle direct to the laptop the connection is stable. If I hard-wire the router to the computer, the connection is still ok. I have a Dell 1390 WLAN mini card installed on the system. If I disconnect the Broadcom utility & try to let Windows set up a connection, it won't connect. It will just keep saying "Acquiring Network Address".

Thanks
So I googled "Dell 1390 problems with WPA" and all these links came out:
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/t/19245137.aspx
http://forum.notebookreview.com/networking-wireless/70214-dell-1390-wlan-mini-card-disconnects-2.html
..."I have to wait 5 minutes to connect"....
http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell/187624-wpa2-dell-1390-a.html
So this is a problem with your wireless card not being fully compatible with WPA even though it claims it is. As such I'm at a loss of what to do unless you want to swap out the WiFi card for a better one(I would suggest the Intel Link WiFi 5100AGN if you do choose to go this route), which is pretty easy(removing 2 screws will do the trick) but will void your warranty.
However, before we do that, have you updated your router firmware to the latest version? Have you done a router reset? Have you installed all the latest Dell drivers? Have you installed this Microsoft patch which enables full Windows XP compatibility for WPA2, in addition to standard WPA?

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;displaylang=en&displaylang=en&id=1974Hi Transfusion

I looked on the Dell page for a newer version of the Wlan driver & couldn't find a better MATCH, but I then found one form a different source & it was about 2 years fresher. I updated with this driver & all is working perfectly now!  Thank you so much for your TIME & help.

Solve : setting up new network?

Answer»

So my brother just GOT himself a new desktop, its all working with the exception of his internet.
He got a wireless N CARD, and our router was wireless G, so he went and got a new wireless N router (Asus RT-N53). My dad decided at the same time he wanted to change our old setup around due to messy/unsightly wiring. The result is my desktop is now the new "host" computer.
I installed all the drivers, software, whathaveyou, and got these results:
My desktop (host, windows 7): has internet
my netbook (windows xp): has internet
my ps3: has internet
my brothers netbook (windows xp): has internet
my brothers ps3: has internet
my brothers desktop (windows 7), d-link N300+ card: no internet
my sisters computer (windows 7) (integrated card, not sure what kind): no internet
my dads desktop (windows xp, d-link WD-1320 card): has internet

i have no idea how to get the two windows 7 computers working. Neither one of them will discover the network, and i dont think its the wireless whatever being turned off because my sisters was connected before i changed the hardware setup and my brother claims to have installed all his software correctly.
help/tutorial links please?

This is what a small office network might look like; I'm curious as to what you mean by "my desktop is now the new "host" computer." All the computers should be able to obtain a DHCP ADDRESS DIRECTLY from your router and connect to the internet without any assistance from your computer.sorry. by "host" i just mean i am wired directly into the router. not technically a "host," just i have the router on my desktop kindathing.

thats called a 'node'We can eliminate the possibility of the router outputting only on the 802.11n channel as your dad's desktop(WDA-1320 does not support N) is connected.
Have you tried a wired connection to one of the Windows 7 computers that will not detect the network?
Have you tried manually entering the SSID into the Windows 7 computers? (http://www.7tutorials.com/how-connect-hidden-wireless-networks)

Solve : COM setup?

Answer»

I have installed two serial cards to my computer, in the CMOS setup screen I can see 3 serial devices.  My parallel serial and both my serial cards.  When I go to devices to set up my COMS it only displays COM1 and COM2, but when i go to advanced settings it says COM1/2/3/4 are in use for a name change option.  I need to have all 4 com ports available to test my SERVERS with hyperterminal.  I'm somewhat familiar with computers as I am setting these up for our Van to receive and send information from our Frack pumps, blender, and transducers.  I am an etech so I mainly DEAL with electrical problems but this was thrown on me because I said i knew a bit about computers.  Much help appreciated, I have searched the forums but I do  not have much time to read through a lot of posts as we need to begin fracking.

Regardsif memory serves, you cannot physically use COM1 and COM3 at the same time, nor can you use COM2 and COM4 at the same time, as they (COM1 and COM3, and COM2 and COM 4) use the same I/O addresses. COM3 and COM4 are more or less USED as "psuedo" devices so you have something to associate with devices such as infrared ports or bluetooth.I have two servers with 8 screens setup, the purpose of the coms is to transmit data coming in to the other screens.  Basically we use a program called Fracpro which graphs out rate/density of the discharge and suction of chemicals.  An engineer or consultant looks over the data and watches pressures and gives orders based on his companies views.  We have other Vans setup that run on COMs 1-4 on 2 different servers supplying information to 8 screens.  My startup menu says that 3 Serial devices are seen but only 1 displays both of its ports, the other two are hidden.  It can be done I just need help on displaying the ports on device manager so I can change the bitrate to 19200 and transmit the data coming into my serial devices from the machinery.

Solve : Is Squid the best free proxy??

Answer»

Have been using squid for a while and was wondering if its the best free proxy or if there is a better alternative?Talk about proxy's is usually frowned upon here.

Actually it might (not sure) be outlined in the rules.ok... wont speak about them again here. Was just wondering because a friend of mine asked me earlier. He is on dial-up and so I have him set up with one of these on an old Celeron 500 Mhz to prefetch frequently visited websites, so that when he goes to surf frequently visited sites most of the static content loads quickly out of the cache on this server, and only the information that changes frequently or can not be cached is fetched across 56k.

He has also used the software that caches information too, but the last time he downloaded and installed one of those cache utilities for speeding up his dial up surfing, he got compromized. I set him up with this 2 years ago and its WORKED great ever since as a local cache. He just asked me out of curiousity if anything NEWER was available, possibly better than this setup. Unfortunately in his location there is no high speed out in the woods on the side of a mountain in Vermont. Is this method of improving 56K throughput?

Some dial-up providers already have this built-in and they say they can increase your effective dial-up by a factor of 5X using some kind of tricks with a cache and image compression.
Quote

Compression by the ISP
As telephone-based 56 kbit/s modems began losing popularity, some Internet Service Providers such as TurboUSA, Netzero, CdotFree, TOAST.net, and Earthlink started using pre-compression to increase the throughput and maintain their customer base. As an example, Netscape ISP uses a compression program that squeezes images, text, and other objects at a proxy server, just prior to sending them across the phone line. The server-side compression operates much more efficiently than the "on-the-fly" compression of V.44-enabled modems. Typically website text is compacted to 5% thus increasing effective throughput to approximately 1000 kbit/s, and images are lossy-compressed to 15-20% increasing throughput to about 350 kbit/s.

The drawback of this approach is a loss in quality, where the graphics acquire more compression artifacts taking on a blurry appearance; however, the perceived speed is dramatically improved and the user can manually choose to view the uncompressed images at any time. ISPs employing this approach may advertise it as "DSL speeds over regular phone lines" or simply "high speed dial-up"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial-up_Internet_access
.
The above information needs to be updated. but it still is something you can check out. In general, if your phone lines are in good shape you should be able to get DSL for a price just above dial--up.Will check into his ISP... for all we know he might be cached with compression vs caching bloated bits. Unfortunately dial-up or satellite are his only options right now, and dial-up is the more reliable and cheaper option. He did check into the new high-speed cellular internet, but until they put a closer tower to him thats not an option.  He checked into DSL and Verizon stated that the closest location for DSL was 12 miles from his home. He is still running happy, but inquired with me the one day if anything better was available, so since I dont use one, I figured I'd check here. Erm... I wonder if you have the wrong end of the stick about what Squid is doing...?

Squid is a pretty darn good caching proxy server.  I don't know off-hand of any better open source proxy - possibly some of the features of Vyatta?  But then you have the massive overhead of learning how to use it.

To be honest, given the prefetch/caching capabilities of Firefox and Chrome, I think Squid would be overkill in a single-user scenario.  It comes into its own when serving multiple users behind a metered internet connection. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on November 09, 2011, 10:02:26 AM

No. I don't. whether it's primary purpose is something else doesn't change the fact that it will act just like any other proxy. It's a proxy.

Squid is software that you install locally that acts as a proxy, as far as you are concerned, serving locally cached copies of stuff "out there", but not to confused with an anonymizing proxy that acts as far as remote hosts are concerned. as proxy for you as far as hosts out there are concerned, providing IP address masking for people who want to evade (e.g.) forum IP address blocking, is it?

wait a second... that sounds pretty pointless. Web Browsers already have caches that do exactly this... Or does it actively cache sites during idle time? (In which case it's basically like the feature of many browsers to pull sites from the web for "offline" viewing. Probably easier to setup than most browsers feature for that, though. Well, it would be pretty pointless on a single computer system, and probably most domestic multi computer systems.
I don't know if this is better, but here is where I get my proxies. I use a firefox addon called foxyproxy and just put those into it. They update the list with new ones every few minutes. Not all of them work, but a good 80% of them do.

Haha. It says that it blocked the url because it is Russian.

As Salmon Trout clarified (preventing me from looking too foolish) the purpose isn't to mask ones IP address but RATHER to locally cache files. Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 09, 2011, 01:14:17 PM

It comes into its own when serving multiple users behind a metered internet connection.

Back in the day, I was I.T. manager for a firm of solicitors with about 8 users behind a 56k connection.  Every slight speed improvement was noticeable.  Particularly on things like news sites - once one person had downloaded a page with lots of images on, loading was near-instantaneous for the next person viewing the same page.

Squid could (in theory) be used as an anonymous proxy, but it would be a lot harder to set up than any of the many dedicated tools.  These days, a network admin is far more likely to use something like Squid for the enforcement of security/compliance policies, using whitelist/blacklist for web sites, etc. This was first about proxy and then abut dial-up cache.
Here is a dial-up company that claims thy can improve your 56K speed with compression and cache and image degradation.
http://www.turbousa.com/Landing/500307/

In those kind of things they cache the images and then feed them to you at a lower quality to speed up the connection, or make it look like is is faster. It is not really a proxy. But it is dial-up. If you call a long distance number you will likely get a different IP. Hard way to proxy.

Solve : internet connection freezes on moderately long connections?

Answer»

OS is windows 7.  I have a very fast internet connection through a cable company. I am connected using an ethernet card/cable. I have no problems when running programs apart from the internet.  I have no problems quickly loading most WEBSITES. The problem does not exhibit on other pcs that I have on the same network.
This is the problem:
For the past few days, I have experienced a major issue when trying to access websites requiring a connection that lasts several seconds.  I first noticed this with gmail.  For example, when I try to SEND a message with an attachment that is 400 kb, the gmail basically freezes. If I run a bandwith test (speakeasy, for example), I initially get a reading of, say, 30 mbps but after a few seconds the progress meter freezes before completing the test and the speed indication slowly drops presumably because I have stopped downloading the test file. Another example, I tried to download a 6 mb file from CNET to upgrade a program.  The first 5 mb downloaded virtually instantly and the the progress bar stopped and the rest of the download did not complete.  (I tried this several times with the same result.)  While these problems are happening, I try going to different tabs in the browser and I seem to have no trouble accessing various websites that load quickly.  I have tried using Firefox and Chrome with the same results.  I did a system restore to the earliest available date (about a week ago), but it did not help. I would appreciate any suggestions. Quote

I tried to download a 6 mb file from CNET to upgrade a program.
Can you post the error and program on CNET to be checked here? Have you cleared browser cache or temp files? Have you ran a scan lately with an up to date antivirus/malware/spyware? Thanks. I have cleared the browser cache (the problem shows up on multiple browsers). I have done malware scans.  The CNET download was just an example.  Any attempt to download a significant sized file has the same problem. (I was able to complete the download by resuming the file.)

What clearly is happening is that when I start an internet connection I get great download times anywhere from 25-32 mbps.  Within a few seconds, however, the download freezes and does not complete.  I have tried connecting the pc directly to the cable modem.  I had the cable modem replaced with a new one.  I had the cable lines to the modem tested (and on 2 other computers I get speeds of 25-30 mbps without the freeezing problem.)  I also tried using a different ethernet cable.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the ethernet card (in device manager).  NONE of these things seem to make a difference.

The problem is somewhat intermittent in that the bandwidth tests sometimes do complete showing a fast bandwith, but I think that is just a case of it sometimes taking longer than others before the download freeze sets in.

I am LOOKING for any other thoughts about what might be causing a problem of this sort.Problem is solved.  The problem was being caused by the Net Guard feature of McAfee. Some google searches on why downloads stop, I got the firewall clue and McAfee tech support found that TURNING off Net Guard resolved the issue.  Thank you again to jason for making a response even though it was not the solution. Solve : Virtual Bandwidth Virtual PC 2007 & Virtual Network Communications?

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone knew if the speed between one Virtual PC 2007 Virtual XP machine and the other on the same system hosting the virtual machines are running a truely virtual throttled down ( limited to 100mbps ) network connection or if its way faster even though it appears as though its a 100mbps network because they are not limited by physical electronic hardware that sync at those SPEEDS and so the faster the Real Physical computer components CPU, RAM, HD, the faster the virtual network communications between 2 virtual machines passing data back and FORTH on simulated networking?

I suppose the best TEST would be to transfer a 100MB file from one virtual machine to the other and time it and do the math, but figured I'd check first to see if anyone knew the answer? You will not see a noticeable difference at 100M bps.
The CPU can transfer data to the RAM at a speed much, much HIGHER than that. Even when crippled. Quote

See my attachment. Use the LAN_SpeedTest.exe to test it. The other stuff in there is just another speed test program. For that one, you just START the server on one comp and the client on the other to test the connection. But try the lan_speedtest one first bc it's easier.

Oh yeah, and I think you have to use a network share to test the first one, but i assume you know how to do that.

Solve : Connected but No Internet Access...?

Answer»

Acer desktop windows 7. Some time ago my desktop stopped connecting to the internet and I couldn't find a solution to this. I've unplugged the ethernet cable, system restore, RESET router, etc. Seems to me there is a problem with the computer itself because I have the ethernet cable wired into my Netgear wireless router and the laptop I'm using now is currently working on it. I TRIED wiring the ethernet cable directly into the modem my service provider had provided me with and that didn't work as well. My desktop says that I'm connected but have no internet access whatsoever. I just wish for a fix on this.... Help would be much appreciated. What you describe is more often hardware issue. Unless you or someone else has recently change the settings on you desktop.
But a virus* can also corrupt your network. Here is an idea. Make one of the rescue  CD s that boot and scan your computer. These also connect to the Internet for a virus update. So hit two birds with none CD.

Here is an earlier post about rescue CD s.
Free AV Resue CD downloads.

* Actually, there are different kins of malicious software . One that attacks your networks settings might be a boot kit. I know I don't have any kind of viruses or malicious software on my pc because I was running windows security and norton 360 and did a system check numerous times. Pardon me. You did not understand. If you have a root kit present you will not know it. You have to use a scan tool that can not be stopped by the infected OS. The rescue CD is a needed  to find anything that was not found otherwise. The fact that something is wrong with your computer is a clue that you might have a root kit or similar thing. Or it could be something else. The rescue CD is a way to eliminate some possibilities. The rescue CD is an independent OS and is not controlled by the SLEEPING OS.  A number of 'virus' turn off the AV software using the OS functions.Unless another OS is in charge. The rescue CD is the other independent OS. Try it. Even if it does not work, it is a good tool to have.

Good!
It will try to get into the Internet via the Ethernet cable. If it does not make a connection, that indicates something not right with the hardware,.
Even if is does not, it will try a scan with the small virus database. It just might catch something. Works for me.so im putting the AV file on my external drive and its 79 MB.... is internet access required for it to function?sorry for double post but heres the scan summary-

Files: 2561           Detections: 0
Directories: 0       Suspicions: 0
Archives: 19         Repaired: 0
Warnings: 0         Wiped: 0
OBJECTS searched: 0       Deleted:0
Hidden objects: 0       Moved: 0So yes, you PC is apparently clean.

(The remarks here are related to direct Ethernet connection, not wireless.)

Now about the Internet issue It would have tried to find a new update over the Ethernet connection, if possible. Did it do that?
Which one did your use and did nit get Internet.?
It does the  scan anyway after failing to find the Internet.  If the hardware is good, it should have got into the Internet.

The rescue CD is a Linux bistro and does not use Windows software components. The Ethernet interface in Linux almost always works and does not depend of special configurations if the connection is via a wired router.

With Windows, a failure to connect is often a wrong setting when using the Internet Connections Wizard. But once it has be set, there is n  good reason for it to change by it self. The most likely cause is hardware failure. But if Linux works and Windows does not, it would not seem to be a hardware issue.
not to fond of the computer lingo but thanks anyways I appreciate it greatly!Try running this while hook directly by ethernet.
1. Go to Start button and hit Run.
2. Type cmd and Enter.
3. Type ipconfig /all >Desktop\Ipconfig.txt (or copy paste this on your cmd window) Enter
4. Open notepad on your desktop and go to Edit -> Select All
5. Edit Menu again and Copy then Paste it on your next reply.

Hi I hope someone has dealt with a EnGenius erb9250.  I am trying to access the erb9250 300Mbps Wireless n range extender.  I am in a rv park and the signal is week and I was told that the range extender is what will work for me .  It said that I have to log in and just go to a web page (google) and type in 192.168.1.2 and then configure it but I can't log in.  So has anybody have one that they were able to get to work, sure could use some help here........thanks.........two-dogs  http://www.engeniustech.com/resources/manual_ERB9250.pdf

Default credentials are ADMIN for user and admin for password. You should be able to find a push button to reset it back to factory defaults if the user/password credentials dont work.I tried the instructions but I still can't access it the way they say.  Problem is it says to hook up to a router but that is not what I want to do.  What I am thinking is that it wont work with out a router and that is not going to do me any good for what I want.........two-dogs  Let me explain what it is I want to do. You will need to have physical access to the park's WiFi access point in order to pair it up with your range extender. You probably want a wireless repeater, which acts as a client to the park's WiFi AP and then rebroadcasts the signal under its own SSID.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Universal_Wireless_Repeater
If you can get your hands on a WiFi Router, not AP, that supports dd-wrt, then you can follow the above instructions.Ok I had to end up taking it back because on my local area connecting it had an x and was not broadcasting.  Come to find out it was bad even the tech could not get it to work.  ALSO I find out that not to much is compatible with my mifi from verzion.  So I have to get a wn2000rpt from NetGear and configure that.  I hope this will be a better out come.........two-dogs

I'm on windows 7 32-bit, and main usage would be for gaming and occasional surfing.

Need some insight on which I should choose, and why.

Thanks. One card is PCI, the other is PCI-Express.  Do you have open slots for either one?Yes I have open slots for both. You might want to save the PCI-e for something else, because you probably only have one?  WiFi doesn't need the speed of PCI-e, USB3.0 does.  The Linksys you selected probably works WELL on a G network, maybe not so well on an N network.

You want to use wireless for online gaming?  You're probably better off using a wired port.I actually have 2 pci-e slots, but could you explain why the linksys isn't good on an n network?

Also what card would you suggest? since a wired connection isn't an option. If your router supports b/g/n and mixed mode which your network device is, means also they are backward compatible with any network adapter installed. The wired up to day is still the preferred connection by any means but not far compared before.  Uh, thanks? Nothing I didn't already know, nor did I ask about. pci vs pci-e
That article is three years old. Now is even more the time to change.
Quote
...
Why should I care about PCI-Express?
There are two main reasons to care about PCI-Express: 1) PCI is now an old standard dating back to the early 90's and no longer fits our needs in terms of speed/performance. 2) AGP also is in a SIMILAR position as PCI now, and chipset manufacturers are killing AGP motherboard support in favor of the much faster PCI Express interface. This means you are looking at a forced transition in the graphic sector, thus you really don't have a lot of choice in the coming years. At this point (August, 2008) choices in AGP cards represent less than 5% of available cards, and the latest chipsets can not be found in the form factor.
...
I tested my (now 12 Mbit/s) Internet connection through speedtest.net with a 802.11b/g(no N) WiFi adapter and then with a 100Mbps wired link to the router. Both returned the same results, 11.4 Mbps d/l speed. The WiFi-enabled PC was 10 meters away from the router and the signal strength was 93% as viewed through DD-WRT Control Panel. However, when I MOVED the PC to another room 10 meters away and closed the door, the signal dropped to 80% and I managed to get a max of 10.72 Mbps. Wired is more reliable. The max (real) local transfer speed that G offers is between 2 Megabytes/second and 3MBps, which is equivalent to 16 Megabits/sec (got this info from SEARCHING around on google) If you have cable internet and want WiFi, you need a N router.

I would go with the PCI because it is cheaper and because it does not prove any advantage over a PCI-E x1 bus.
http://www.directron.com/expressguide.html
PCI operates at 132 Megabytes/sec, which is equal to 1056 Megabits/sec. I doubt you have a 1Gbps internet connection. Even if you did, you would be limited by the theoretical max WiFi N transfer speed of 300 Mbps.I always like using the same manuf for everything whenever possible;e. You don't have to but it seams to make things go smoother. Linksys is a Cisco product which is one of the best manuf. Use a Linksys card. Here is one that should work for you. You can price around is f you like:

Check out some reviews at: http://www.techyv.com/questions/looking-fast-cheap-reliable-wireless-card-desktopAll the decent wireless device do speeds well above the current Internet DSL and Cable speeds. The high end broadband hits about 22mbps on cell phone networks. WI-Fi is at least twice as fast, so that the Wireless local connection has little impact on speed of you Internet service.

However, when buying new equipment and in a urban area, the dual band devices are to be preferred.  Interference is becoming an issue. Dual band is the short-term answer until the FCC decides to let home seres have more of the spectrum.Yes with more people adopting wireless interference is an issue. 802.11n supports both the 2.4GHz and the 5 GHz band.

Solve : Best internet provider for 2 people??

I would REALLY like some opinions on what the best internet provider would be for 2 people, and pros and cons if you don't mind? A kind of provider that has a stable internet and a really high/unlimited downloading and at the same time not too expensive, for 2 people who love to download. Thanks. Not DSL
Satellite is very expensive.
Some kind of cable. Com-cast is fast. Practically unlimited. Prices may vary
Using a Cell-Pone interface also works good. But read the FINE print. It is never unlimited.

In some areas a alternative microwave LINK is a good deal.

Woops forgot to put that sorry. I'm from Montreal Quebec CanadaYou will find in most areas internet service is limited to a few providers.  There are good DSL providers and there are bad DSL providers.  Just as there are good and bad cable companies.  In a few areas you may have a choice of two cable companies.  If you have more than one DSL provider all the traffic goes over the same wires, with a smaller company leasing capacity from the local phone company.

Almost all cable companies offer month to month service so if you don't like their service you can cancel with no penalty.  Many DSL companies require long term contracts with cancellation penalties.

Geek is right about satellite service being expensive.  It was designed for rural areas with no cable or DSL service available.

In short there are no easy answers and you need to shop around.  Talk to your friends and neighbors to see what they use, and if they are happy with the service. If you lived in Alberta, there would be some news for you.
New satellite to boost rural Internet speedsYou are absolutely in luck. Start off by contacting  Distributel . They offer unlimited bandwidth and speed (when compared to Bell Canada's service it is their highest priced package) (Bell's).However their (Distributel's) one size fits all is Bell's top of the line and Distributels's price for it is lower than Bell's price for their lowest service. As you are undoubtedly aware in your part of the country Bell owns all the infrastructure but is obliged under CRTC ruling to make their infrastructure available to competitors. They can charge what ever they decide but they are renting the lines from Bell to provide their service to customers. So the only thing you will NOT get from Bell which you would if you bought from them (besides the higher price of course) is their arrogant attitude towards their customers (which i am sure you are already familiar with given that their local phone service monopoly in your Province). If you bundle your long distance service with Distributel the prices drop even more. Ask them when you call about their various costs and bundled services. truenorth

Solve : Portforwarding help.?

Answer»

I have 2 questions to ask about this.  I own a 2wire 2701hg-g modem and I am trying to forward the port 25565 for minecraft but have had mixed results.  I am on a wireless connection, and there is no firewall that I am aware of (windows firewall is off on my computer, but if you know a way for me to check I would be appreciative.)

-Using canyouseeme.org to check the port status before starting, it is shown as closed.
-I went to "enable application support" in the modem and chose my computer "dave" (192.168.1.64, confirmed through ipconfig) to unblock port 25565 for both TCP and UDP.
-I re-checked canyouseeme.org and it shows the port is still closed. "connection refused".

Which computer do I choose to forward the port on?  I have a list of many, and can only unblock the ports on one as far as I know (it will not register the same program name on multiple ones)
Owner-PC 0.0.0.0
Dave 192.168.1.64  --my computer
Owner-PC 192.168.1.70
Owner-PC 192.168.1.65  --my fathers computer
Ipad 192.168.1.71
Owner-PC 192.168.1.74
Owner-PC 192.168.1.66
Owner-PC 0.0.0.0
They all have unique local ip's, but we only have 2 computers using the network.  How can I remove all but the .65 and .64 which are our two computers?  Is the fact that two have 0.0.0.0 addresses important?

I have previously also properly forwarded the port (by playing around with which computer I unblock it on) so that on my computer when I check canyouseeme.org it shows the port 25565 as open, but still I was unable to access my server (nor was my friend) by attempting to connect with 70.52.169.88

On minecraft I attempted to connect to my server 3 ways once the port is open, through LOCALHOST, 192.168.1.64, and 70.52.169.88.  The result is that localhost works, .64 works, but my public IP doesnt.

Is this somehow my mistake in forwarding, or a problem with the server/client?  My IP has not changed during this period (I believe I set it to static a long time ago) and it has remained the same even after rebooting all of our computers and the modem itself, so it is not an issue of a dynamic IP being updated.

Thank you for your time, I hope I provided enough information for you.  Modems have always frustrated me.

EDIT>> Could a firewall on another computer affect this?  I know the other computer in our house has one running. Many ISP's block certain ports to try to keep home user based internet service packaged customers from serving up content like a business ISP plan. Not sure if this port is on their blacklist or not, but a quick google search shows others with same ISSUES and that port. You can try a different port like 8079 which works for my FTP server that my ISP blocks port 21.

In the server config file its an easy alteration and save of the file, then restart the server service.

The server will have to broadcast the service for minecraft on port 8079 or another port of your choice, and each client will also have to be altered to LOOK for a hosted service on that same port. I checked port 8079, and got  "connection timed out" before forwarding it.
After forwarding it I still can not access, but this time the error is "connection refused"

EDIT>> aha! my server GUI did not save the changes so I had to do it manually.

The port now says it is open, but again I get the error "can't reach server" when attempting to connect through my public IP while localhost and my .64 address show it connects.

Does anyone else have any ideas as to what could be causing this?

windows firewall is off on my computer, but if you know a way for me to check I would be appreciative.

To check your firewall status you can enter firewall.cpl at start run. You will then see ON and OFF with a green DOT indicating if its ON or OFF. If the green dot is in the OFF selection then its truly off, otherwise its enabled, so click to shut it off and see if it works. If this is the problem and you want the firewall on, you just need to add an exception to allow pass thru.I had not seen that site before, thank you for the link I will check it shortly.

My windows firewall has been shown as off, but when I went to play around with definitions to allow programs it showed up on a later screen that while public/private profile firewalls were off, my domain firewall is on.

For the heck of it I disabled the domain firewall, and then added definitions to forward port both 25565 and 8079 anyway.

No change on my side, but I will ask a friend to try it later on to verify. As it turns out that one section of the firewall being on caused this.

Im very frustrated because all signs pointed towards a firewall being the issue but by going to the firewall page numerous times I couldnt find any option which was "on".

Thanks for your time, and Im sorry I wasted it.Glad you are all set now. Time not wasted

Solve : Problem connecting to internet.?

Answer»

Dell Dimension 4700 win XP sp2. Had problems with computer including getting on internet using motorola dsl  modem. I can get on internet using another computer connected to same modem with no problems. I eventually replaced mother board and upgraded memory with 2G memory(IG each in slot 1 and 3 as were the others.)
I had ISP tech go through settings with me and conclusion was that some problem with computer nertwork communicating with modem. When pinged received messages 4 times,  timed out and then results, 4 packets sent 0 returned for 100% failure. This is new mboard but same internet connection problem as old one.
Also as I understand the network card is intergrated with mboard. If true and this should still be problem can a plug in network card be installed into the vacant slot and disable  the intergrated card? And how to accomplish this?

Any help is greatly appreciated, Thankshttp://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700/sm/parts.htm

Do you mean just this problem you were forced to replace the motherboard? I didn't replace just for internet connection only. I had other issues running  computer and getting worse with lockups and more. After inspection inside I found some swelled capacitors and decided with that and age to replace and upgrade with more Ram. Works great now except the internet connection problem.
ThanksDid you install network card driver and check your Device manager for any flags or MARK under your network adapter? How is the network icon connection SHOWING on system tray? What messages do you see when browsing or not able to SURF the internet?I did not install any drivers.   I have one item under Network adapters and no flags of any kind.--      Intel(R) PRO100 VE Network Connection --   Four Driver files all have green check mark in front of each . Start -> run -> cmd -> ping google.com [press enter]Message received --could not find host google.com. I tried 2nd time same result.1.

Solve : Why is every network listed as "connect automatically"...?

Answer»

Hi guys,
I recently switched over to Shaw Extreme internet a few months ago, and they setup a new wireless connection and everything. However, ever since we GOT this new wireless connection, I have been experiencing issues with it. On my Windows 7 laptop, the connection often changes to "No internet access", and then I have to either change/shift the location of my laptop, or disconnect and reconnect with my NETWORK again. The connection isn't lost or anything, there's just no internet access.
Just today, I checked my wireless connection list (like all the connections that are available), and every connection had the checkmark BESIDE "Connect Automatically". Could this mean that my laptop is trying to connect to all of those connections automatically, which interferes with my actual connection? The checkmark is beside every single one, except for the one that I connect to.
So could anyone explain why it is the way it is? I've tried unchecking "Connect Automatically" for all the connections, btw, but it reverts back as soon as I RELOAD the list of available connections.
If anyone can help, I appreciate it.Do you mean there are open wifi networks? You could just delete those previous connections and used your own home network to connect automatically using WAP/WEP preconfigured SECURITY setup. Or arranged them by seeing this link -> Change Wireless Network Priority to Make Windows 7 Choose the Right Network First

Solve : New computer, wifi just does not work?

Answer»

So i just purchased a Asus laptop model K53E. If there is other info you need, then tell me since i am new to this. But anyways, at the same point and time i purchased a new netgear router (N3000 model: WNR2000). I wanted to get a new one since the old linksys was dropping big time. So i install the router, and it works fine. It has a constant good connection for THREE other laptops and xbox live. It even seemed to work fine at first with my new Asus laptop at first. Then i noticed that terribly frequently the connection would just drop. For example, i would be browsing the internet and then a page would simply not load. This happens literally all the time i try to do anything and at this point i cannot even really access the internet because it does not have any type of steady connection. Again, i know it is not the router since it works perfect with all the other devices in my house. I tried a few things like switching the router channel from 6 to 11, I unistalled the drivers to the network ADAPTERS and reinstalled them with no progress. I know I left scarce info but i really need help this problem is killing me right now. I cant even use my new laptop on the internet. Forgot to mention, when i troubleshoot the network adapter on device manager it says the default GATEWAY was not connected, not sure if that helps at allaccidently made a reply...........If your ASUS laptop is new, it should be covered by a warranty. Why don't you take it back to the computer shop and notify them of the problem? It seems like the best solution.

Also, does this happen as well while having an ethernet connection or it's only with your Wi-Fi?

Yeah thats what im thinking too. It is only with the wifi, it works perfectly fine with an ethernet cable directly to my router. Also, i remember i did a different test yesterday and it failed the ping test if that helpsDoes ASUS give tech SUPPORT via phone during the warranty period?  If so, I'd try it.

Edit: See http://support.asus.com/contactus.aspx?SLanguage=en for info in support, including phone contact #s.I called Asus. They had me reinstall the WIRELESS network adapter drivers and restart my pc. This did not resolve the problem and it has not changed it at all. Did it worked before you had the laptop first hand? If these occured instantly right out the first time you have used the wireless connection till now, tell them about the problem. If it fails out of the box, take it directly to the store. Solve : Will buying a new modem improve my connection??

Answer»

I've had AT&T DSL (adsl) for about 7 years, and just lately I've noticed my modem (Speedstream 4100) having difficulties.  Rather than all the lights being green like they usually are, the DSL one will change to red like it's trying to connect, and the activity light, which is usually always blinking, is sometimes off.  Could it be that my modem is going bad?  No. The red light means there is a problem with the line.
Ask you service provider to COME CHECK the lines. Often the phone company makes changes to phone lines and it might impact the DSL quality.
If the problem persists, consider a new modem. My family has had DSL for a really long time and we also had the ORIGINAL modem that was sent to us.  At one point, the internet kept disconnecting 3-4 times a day and we needed to restart the modem each time to get it to work again.  When we called DSL they told us that the problem was that the modem was just too old.  We bought a new DSL modem (Actiontec) and got it to work.  The first WEEK I would say it had similar disconnection problems.  However, those went away pretty fast and it's been SMOOTH sailing for the past 1-2 years that we've had the new modem now.  I don't really know if it was an error on the ISP's end that ended up getting fixed or if the new modem really was what led to the improvement.

Before getting a new modem, I would recommend calling your ISP and having them conduct line tests and maybe getting a technician to come out and check just to be sure.  If they find no problems but you're still losing internet every once in a while, invest in a new modem (after 7 years it's not a terrible idea) and see if it helps.

By the way, when the light changes to red, are you still able to surf the internet?

Solve : Myspace and Facebook will not load........?

Answer»

For the last several weeks, I cannot get into myspace or facebook.  I get a connection error everytime I try.  All other internet sites work just fine, only these two don't.  I've called my internet company and they said I either have a virus or a problem with my router (home network).

I have kaspersky and trojan remover and they pick up nothing.  My router box has "WL-500G Premium v2" on it.  We did reset the router and that did not work.

Any ideas?  I can't understand why only these 2 sites don't work and everything else does!

ALSO----If I type in the ip addy for facebook, the login page will come up but when I log in, I get connection error.  I cannot even search for mypace's ip addy.  If I type myspace into google, I get a connection error.  It is like the words themselves are blocking access.

??

I don't KNOW anything about computers.  I mean nothing at all here!

Thanks!  VickiIf you have Windows XP try the following:

Navigate to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc"
Right click "hosts" and then click open.
When it asks which application to open with, choose notepad.

Please copy and paste everything below and POST in a reply.

127.0.0.1       localhost

If you see the following lines, remove them and save the document.

127.0.0.1            www.myspace.com
127.0.0.1            myspace.com
127.0.0.1            http://www.myspace.com
127.0.0.1            www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1            facebook.com
127.0.0.1            http://www.facebook.comThank you.  I did what you said and found both myspace and facebook there, so I deleted them and saved it.  So..............now facebook is working fine.  Myspace is still not working.

I cannot even do a search for myspace on THIS message board.  I put the word into the search box above and got a connection error.  This also happens when I tried to search for myspace help on Google and other search engines besides here.

It seems like the word itself is triggering some sort of block that give me a connection error.  But the host thing worked for facebook.

Any other ideas?  Thanks!  VickiWhen you say you "reset" the router do you mean you reset it to DEFAULTS or you unplugged the router for a few minutes? Also is this being blocked on just one user or multiple user profiles that log in?

It's probably some form of malware. I'd run through the guide hereI have the same problem, but it's ONLY with facebook. I've gone through several of the malware removal tutorials and removed the problems they came up with. This morning I even went as far as completely reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling my OS. The problem still persists. I've tried FF3 and IE and both have issues. There's nothing in my "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc" file except the 127.0.0.1 localhost extension. The only thing that seems to help at all is turning off my firewall and even then the site takes FOREVER to load. I haven't made any changes to my computer configuration since September (except the reformatting job this morning) and I started having this issue Friday night (it was fine in the morning). This is ridiculously confusing.I am about halfway through the malware removal process.  Still not working and my teenage daughter is making me nuts about this.  Ugh!  Several of my other friends (all with macs or windows XP/vista) are experiencing the same issue. It's not malware, it's not cookies, it's not cache, it's not internet connection issue, it's definitely a problem from facebook. From all the forums I've checked, this doesn't seem to be the first time this has happened to people either. I guess they'll fix it eventually =/  zeromancet so both Myspace and Facebook are having the same problem?Personally, I haven't had any issues with myspace, nor have any of my other friends, so I can't say much about it. I'm almost positive on the facebook problem because I've been searching forums since it started and I've tried everything they've had to offer and then some with no success. After hearing about all the friends I have with the same issue, it can't be coincidental. Something has to be wrong with these sites. If you've also been through several forums explaining about DNS flushing, clearing your cache, cookies, malware removal, etc. and have had no success with either site, it may be safe to assume it's at least a similar issue with myspace too.

The only thing I've been able to do as a "band-aid" until hopefully they fix it is to disable my firewall while I'm visiting facebook. It still takes forever to load, but it usually responds after several minutes (think dial up speed). It might work for myspace too, but use that method at your own risk. I'm still searching for solutions I haven't heard of or tried yet >_>as of now, facebook is still working fine for me, so i don't know what's happeningI've done a little more poking around and I was able to get an answer from facebook... sort of.

They state: "Some users are experiencing very slow page loads (greater than 1 MINUTE) while navigating the site. We are currently investigating this issue and believe it may be a problem limited to certain Internet Service Providers. Please report this issue here."

Solve : Weird one...? Slowest computer on home wifi?

Answer»

Hi Guys.
I and the kids have 4 laptops between us. Mine is by far the newest, biggest memory, most ram, fastest processor and runs on Win 7 and uses ESET (as do the kids laptops)....

Connecting to the internet HOWEVER mine is as slow as a snail compared to the kids laptops.
Over the past few days when we have been online at the same time we have run speed tests at speedtest.net - the kids have all been registering down speeds of between 2 and 7Mbps wheras mine has never exceeded 0.7Mbps in about 6 or 7 different tests at different times of the day. There is no wired laptop, torrent etc connected to the router and no P2P connections we are all on the same simple wifi type connection.

We have sky internet and the router is not easily get-into-able as sky don't seem to give our the router passwords etc. so I cant log into the router to see what is happening there.

If I wire my laptop into the hub I achieve a down speed of about 6.5Mbps so I suspect that this problem has something to do with my wireless adaptor, or else for some reason the wireless router is not liking my laptops connection and giving it a lower priority.

I have used several different scanners on my hard drive, plus cleaned my registry. The doesn't seem to be anything untowards running anywhere. There is loads of free disk space and typically system idle process occupies 97% of the AVAILABLE CPU...

If anyone has any ideas I would be extremely appreciative.  Thanks.Use speedtest again alone or without anyone connecting to wirelessly.Hi Jason. Thanks for TAKING an interest.
With noone else online I got 6.9Mbps down and 0.3 up.

Confused by this. Does it mean that somehow the router is prioritising OTHERS over my computer?

Cheers
Dave Quote

If I wire my laptop into the hub
Is this a modem with built in router capabilities or modem connected to router and why are you using a hub?

Has this system ever worked properly off the WiFi?

Quote
P2P connections we are all on the same simple wifi type connection
If you are using P2P (file sharing) software on that system could explain the reason for the poor down load and upload speeds.   Sugguest that you disable and try the speed test?

Have you rebooted the WiFi?Sorry obviously my knowledge (rather lack of) of the correct names for things is confusing people.

I dont work off a hub we all have a single netgear DG834GT which is basically a combined modem and wifi hub, standard home network fare.

There is no p2p just 4 laptops connecting wirelessly to the Netgear.

Have you rebooted the modem?

Yes we have rebooted the modem many times.
Just did another test, still the same with 3 other laptops online I got 0.68mbps down. Within a minute one of the kids got 3.85mbps down and another 1.28mbps down. Right after that I did a further one - the internet connection to mine actually dropped off completely and couldn't load the webpage, then after a few attempts got back on it and recorded 0.23Mbps down...I lost the connection again whilst trying to post this, yet the kids are surfing and chatting online uninterrupted

Have you made any changes to your wireless card configurations?

The main thing I am looking at is the setting set for Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

How comfortable do you feel with reconfiguring the modem and the Wi-Fi Card?

May also look to see if the modem is set to automatically assign IP and DNS address. Quote
I have used several different scanners on my hard drive, plus cleaned my registry
I would suggest to stop using unknown registry cleaners. They could leave your PC into an unusable state. What product scanners do you mean? You also mentioned using ESET. Is it the Free, Paid or Trial version with Firewall, Scanner , Antivirus and Spyware? Have you tried changing the laptop location for any probable distance or interference factor?Go into safe mode with networking with the others online and then rune the speedtest.

If your computer has a single operating system installed, tap the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo APPEARS. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode With Networking and then press enter.

Scroll to you user name log in using your user information.

This will run the computer with default drivers so do not panic if the screen does not look properly.

What channel is the wireless part of the modem set to you may be getting interference form other wireless in the area.  Try switching to another channel and see if that clears up.

You want to set up a VPN server on Windows 7... NAT 32 is geared at Windows 98 and 2000..

http://www.howtonetworking.com/VPN/win7vpn1.htm
This is how to set up a VPN Server on Windows 7, which looks EASIER than using NAT32.hey! i just bought router, now i just have to share my vpn by vpn, without setting local network =) yea... its easy to set, but hard to share
no, NAT32 supports Windows 7 64bit from 2.1 version i think it will help me, but dont know how at this time..

Solve : Broadband DSL light is blinking?

Answer»

My Broadband DSL router's DSL light blinks and it does not get stable, and this led to DISCONNECTION of INTERNET. This occurs some times when i am online this issue stars.

Details of my Broadband:
Utstarcom
WA3002G4

Network provider: BSNLThere are 4 status that lights indicates : Power - ADSL - Internet - LAN. On powering up first the modem/router, the first light is on the power. If there is a connected PC on wired from end to end, then the LAN will lit. While ADSL blinks to load for a minute or so, then establishes a connection, the Internet lits up last. Now if the ADSL light goes off intermittently, I would suggest calling your ISP first. And just FYI, broadband disconnection problems are most commonly caused by poor quality cabling, INSIDE your building or between your building and the exchange. This happens on most routers ... I have had three where the DSL light blinks DURING internet access ... there may not be a fault with that, it MAY be something else.Usually mean that there is a lost connection between the modem and the ISP or even misconfiguration with in the modem.

At any time do any of the other lights change color when the DSL light flashes?  What it is the blink rate?

Have you changed any configuration of firmware updates to the Modem?  That you are aware of.

How long has this been happening?

Have you tried to reboot/reset the modem?  Do not preform reset UNLESS you have all configuration information handy.

Happens random or like clockwork?

This issue has been fixed.
I called my ISP and he told that the wire connection at polls were loose.
 Problem solved
Thanks everyone!!!

Solve : Mysterious Downloads?

Answer»

I think I'm in the right Forum for this question.  Last night I forgot to turn my desktop off, but it was in Sleep Mode and I had CLOSED out of Firefox so that all that was showing on the screen was my desktop.  This morning when I went to sign on to Firefox I noticed that it was running really slow so I checked the Usage Page on Hughes and it showed that between 8-9 last night my computer had downloaded 249.13 MB, and between 6-7 this morning 44.73 MB had been downloaded. If I go over 200MB of download/upload in a 24 hour period, Hughesnet will slow my computer down to a virtual crawl as I have their least expensive package. Since I had put it in Sleep Mode around 7:30 last night and hadn't downloaded anything that huge just before Sleep Mode, and I didn't get up this morning until 7:45, I am really concerned as to what and how my computer downloaded all those megabytes without my knowledge or permission.     So, I guess my question is, how can I find out what was downloaded and if it is something of a viral nature can I go back to a previous time before the download to get rid of it?  I do not have any of my programs on automatic download with the exception of NORTON Antivirus.  My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit system.  Thanks

Never pick a fight with anyone who buys ink by the barrel.[/i]
You weren't in Sleep Mode if you could see the screen.  Sleep Mode shuts everything down & saves to RAM, power is on but at a low level.  Since computer was on & running, let's move on to what is running:
Download & install this:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653

My OS is also Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit system, but not on the computer I'm on now.  PE is good for 64-bit, too.
Win7HP64-bit system, has over 100 processes running.I guess I wasn't too clear in my explanation as I had GONE off line and was at the Desktop before I put it into Sleep Mode.  Sorry about that.  I will try as you suggest as soon as I am out of the 24 hour "penalty" period that Hughesnet imposes when you go over their LIMIT.  Thanks for you prompt reply. This will help DEFINE the 3 modes:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Sleep-and-hibernation-frequently-asked-questions.
Yes, you were in Sleep Mode.  Next time try one of the other 2, or shut it off.
Win7 features are a little new to me, too.

What is make & model of computer?  My HP does updates just like Microsoft & must be configured to not do it automatically.  About a week ago, the download was 1000MB.Downloads are usually USERS controlled. The exceptions are usually for Windows update, Protection Softwares and several programs installed that have user intervention to enable or disable updates.

Solve : Using my laptop to get internet to a desktop?

Answer»

Hello,

I have DSL and a wireless router in my home.  My laptop is capable of receiving wireless internet and I have been using an ethernet cable to share the internet signal it receives with a nearby desktop computer.  Everything was working fine until YESTERDAY when my DSL went out.  The DSL started working again today and I am able to connect to the internet on my laptop without problems.  However, without changing ANYTHING, I am now no longer able to connect to the internet via the desktop.  I did not change any settings but I am not getting internet.

The laptop is running Windows 7 sp1. The desktop is running Windows 2000 sp4.  My wireless connection has sharing enabled via the "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" and I have selected the Local Area Network.  All services are enabled via the configure sharing menu.  The desktop computer knows when the cable is plugged in or not but my network and sharing center on the laptop is showing the LAN has no internet access but fails to tell me why.  I have the LAN automatically obtaining an IP and the LAN on the desktop is doing the same thing.  I'm pretty sure these are the same settings I had before when it was working.

Let me know what other information I can provide that might be useful in answering my question.  I really appreciate the help.It would be far better if you bought a cheap 802.11B/G wifi dongle for your desktop... Windows internet sharing is not a permanent internet sharing solution...

Something like this:

Oh I see... it wouldn't be worth investing in a dongle in this case.

Have you set up your connection like this?

The guide says to select properties on my Ethernet connection.  Is this referring to my LAN connection? I have a Wireless network connection (the one I use to connect to the internet), a Wireless network connection 2 (Microsoft virtual wifi miniport) and a Local Area Connection (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller).  There is no separate ethernet connection.  Also, I don't understand why I would share the LAN connection.  Since I am connecting to the internet through the Wireless Network Connection, shouldn't that be the one I am sharing? And I share it VIA the LAN connection.  Those are the settings I had before when it was working.

Anyway, if I go to my LAN and enable sharing through that then I get this error:

I can't find out how to connect to the laptop via the desktop.  However, on my network map on my laptop, the desktop is shown.  Though I'm not able to do anything with it.There may be a problem with either dynamic or static IP address you were using beforehand. If you happen to have a 3rd party firewall(or other than windows firewall), try disabling first. Uncheck/Recheck ICS, reboot host PC and try establishing your connection again. Are you using a cross over cable for the LAN port?

I think it may be an IP problem as well, but I'm not sure how to fix that. I have both computers set for dynamic IPs for the LAN since that is what windows help recommended.

    Here is what I did:

    • I disabled the network firewall
    • I unchecked the sharing option
    • I unplugged the ethernet cable
    • I plugged the ethernet cable back in and waited for it to be found
    • I went to my wireless internet connection and enabled sharing
    • I selected the Local Area Connection as the home networking connection
    • I tried accessing the internet and it didn't work on the desktop but WORKED on the laptop.
    • I unplugged the cable again
    • I turned sharing off
    • I plugged the cable back in
    • I enabled sharing on the LAN
    • I selected the Wireless Network Connection as the home networking connection
    • I tried accessing the internet and it didn't work on my desktop or laptop

Also, I'm not sure if it is a crossover cable, but like I said, this same cable worked in the past.[/list]

Some or most laptops also have a wireless SWITCH for turning on/off before wifi adapter would start detecting certain infrastructured networks. By posting the complete laptop model and operating system you have, we could look further and other CH members, experts into the PROBLEM. Look for a sliding switch or a button indicating the wireless should be enabled.

Solve : I Think I May Have Slowed Our Internet??

    Answer»

    Okay, for background information;

We have a cable modem hooked up to a very old computer from 2000. We then hooked up a wireless router to the modem as well, and all was great for several years. In fact, I am on my laptop using Wi-Fi from our router as I am posting this.

    Current Situation;

I decided to work on the computer that our modem was hooked to(As it had not been turned on in years since we have a different desktop in a different room). I decided to completely whip the computer and use the recovery disc that came with the computer to RESTORE it to factory state. I did so, and was very successful. Internet works on that computer, and on all the devices and other computers who access internet via Wi-Fi from our wireless router which is connected to the modem on the old computer I restored. The issue is; Now it seems as though my internet is slower. Before messing with the old computer I typically had 3-4/5 bars of Wi-Fi and could easily watch a YouTube video in standard definition and never have to wait for buffer. After I fixed the old computer I still have 3-4/5 bars of Wi-Fi but I can only watch 3 seconds of youtube video before I have to wait 2 minutes to load the next 3 seconds...Also things that would have previously taken a few seconds to download now take a few minutes. Web pages still load fast, but they load noticebly slower than compared to before I fixed the old computer. I was wondering if I could have screwed up our internet somehow and slowed it down when fixing the old computer.

I never unhooked anything when I restored our old computer. I simply whipped it entirely clean by booting dban from a disc. Then I put the restore disc that came with the computer and it reinstalled Windows XP and all the STUFF that was on it when it came from the factory. (I run Windows 7 on all PC's in the house...This being so old it has XP.) Anyway, my question is; Did I slow our internet down somehow? If I did how can I fix it? -OR- Is this just rotten luck attributed to the provider or weather.

P.S. I have tried resetting our wireless router, restarting my laptop, disconnecting from the internet and reconnecting, and simply waiting a few hours to see if it fixes itself. I know the issue is NOT my laptop. The busy light is never on while buffering videos, and all my offline music, video, and games run perfectly fine(And fast mind you). It seems to be the connection itself as even my Xbox360, 3DS, and Wii have to buffer video and take longer to load things from the web.

Thanks for any help in advance. =) Quote

1.) The modem ad the old computer had a technical relationship. When you restored the PC using the recovery disc, the information  was lost. Now the old PC looks like a bandit. You need to talk to the service provider and tell them what you did.

2.) Internet settings are not 'built-in' to the operations system. They have to be set up by a user or a program that works with the local ISP and the type of modem and/or the type of router. You have to run the 'internet wizard' or 'network wizard' again to get the right settings.

When a computer gets old, the maintenance is usually cleaning out the dust and running a check disk programs. On most modern hard drives, the MS chkdsk  is all that is needed to 'refresh' the files system and verify the drive integrity.

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true
Thanks for your reply. I have a few questions as to what I need to do to fix this issue. So you say my old computer had a "technical relationship" with my modem? In order to restore this what must I do? Also, I have internet from said modem/computer/wireless router it's just not quite as fast as before(Just making sure you have this info so there is no confusion later on).

Okay, so how do I restore this relationship, and how can I open the internet wizard you mentioned. Upon restoring it had me pick between three phone numbers to use to connect to the internet, perhaps I picked the wrong one?? I just went with default for everything.

Forgive my noobness, I am still learning. Thanks for you patience and help.

~Sage RazielAlso, I should mention when the modem was set up it was simply plugged in, and the internet connection was tested. I never adjusted any setting originally when it was set up(And this was in 2000). I was wondering if resetting the modem and the router would perhaps solve the issue, or is that would just make matters worse...

Also still wondering about the questions from my previous post.

Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated. I was getting worried I'd never have my old internet speed back. With your help I hope we can fix it.

~Sage RazielWell, There is not much I would add.
You need to know how the ISP wants the system setup. For example, in a simple cable modem PC connection, the modem looks for the MAC address of the first computer it finds. That would be the key for that system to work.
But another ISP may have a different way to make sure the modem is being used by the right person. There may be some kind of password thing the starts things. This information may be knot in plain view.
You have to contact your local ISP. The information varies from one company to another and even by region or neighborhood.
Who installed then router? do you remember how it was done? In some cases, the router must know the MAC address of the original PC. In not, performance may be un predictable.
Sorry I can not outline all the permutations of what goes wrong. But in the control panel you can find network wizard, internet settings, and internet connections, add a home network.
In Windows networking toucan start over again and define the network all over again.
There should be some material from the ISP from when the system was first set up.
It's very late here, and I have to get to bed soon because I have work tomorrow. However, I will be attempting to fix it tomorrow. So your top recommendation is to contact my service provider? We've had suddenlink since we first bought a computer way back when. We rented our modem in 2000 when we got the new computer, we rented it for so long the place we were renting form just gave it to us.

I'm amazed how it worked perfectly before, then restoring the computer it was hooked to slowed it down. X_X I always figured if it did mess it up it would disconnect it entirely, but nope. Works fine, just much slower now. Tomorrow I will explore my control panel and see if I can find internet/network wizards and attempt to fix it again. I will also call Suddenlink and see what they can say, but normally they have no idea what's wrong and they have to send someone to look at it.

I'll keep in contact and keep you updated as the situation develops.

    Thanks again for the help.

~Sage RazielTry removing the old PC from the Home network and see if it makes a difference. Also, try browsing and streaming videos with only the laptop to verify if its the ISP connection or any other issue is involved.I just now recall. In 2000 most people were on  an older VERSION of XP. Your system was likely updated progressively with the updates. But a fresh install wipes out the up dates! There wee some important changes to MS  internet protocol drivers during that time period.

So, that means you need SP1, SP2 and SP3 to be up to date!
And yes, and important change to the TCP/IP stack was made. That could really annoy the router! Likely the router is more up to date.
Sorry, I am a little slow. Can't always recall what happened when.
    http://www.speedtest.net/

go there take a speed test see what it is running at .
than get the router Ip and the ip of your modrem
your modem and router should have a setup option fallow the promps and reset them up , that should fix any lag issues you are having ..
hope this helps ..Okay the SpeedTest website would not load, it kept saying "Connection Timed Out". I refreshed and tried MANY times, I'm assuming it's just a high server load because I've never had any issues with not being able to load a site. (Even now with slow internet everything loads...Just a bit slower.)

So before I go through the daunting task of dealing with SuddenLink I'm going to try updating Windows XP.

Also, I was reminded that the modem may have come with a disc. I'm in the process of locating that disc now. Could that be the problem; I did not use the disc this time? I will post the information on the disc as soon as I find it to see if it is important, or if it's just a load of 3rd party crap.

Thanks again guys. I'd be lost without this forum.

No idea what's on the disc yet. I'm updating Windows at the moment so I can't try it out. My internet connection being so slow will make my Windows update take forever. =/

~Sage RazielSorry this is taking so long. I started the downloads for Windows XP Service Pack 2 & 3 this morning and it's still not finished. I have been keeping a close eye on my download speed throughout the day to provide some sort of benchmark. I disconnected ALL devices in my home from the internet accept the computer to which the modem is hooked up. My minimum download speed is about 9 KB/sec and my max is about 17KB/sec.

It will take me forever to download these service packs, so I might not get back here for a day or so. Rest assured I will return when I have finished downloading and installing these service packs to update everyone here on the situation and to move on to the next steps to fix my connection if that need be.

Thanks for all your help guys.

~Sage RazielHow are the newer computers running on the internet? I think you need to establish first if its just the older one is slow or the whole network. What is your SUBSCRIBED connection speed? Your first post seems to have a higher speed as compared to your last post.

Already did that. It said to simply plug it in to my USB port and follow the steps of the wizard. (Which I did upon restoring my computer.)

    I do have a very interesting addition to add to the story, however;

I have cured the slow internet problem by turning off my old computer, unplugging the cable modem, and the wireless router. (All three things COMPLETELY shut down and turned off.) I then plugged them all back up. Now all my devices receiving wireless internet are actually a bit faster than before =)

Downside, now the old computer is not receiving ANY internet at all.....No idea why it turned out that way, but it did. The wireless router is working, but the modem is not providing internet to the computer it's hooked to. So, any suggestions on how to fix it without loosing speed?Where was the old computer hooked up when connection got crawled? Ain't the wireless router with available ports for the old PC to hook up by LAN cable? The modem's ethernet port should hook up with the wireless router port. Now if the wireless router has LAN ports(usually 4), you could just then connect the PC directly. You shoud use Ethernet port, not USB port, although both are available from the manual I read. From what I understand here is you are hooking the old PC directly to the modem's usb port and then using the the other one for the wireless, right?

Solve : Just got a Server Blade from my Uncle?

    Answer»

Hello this is my first time on this forum.

So my Uncle just gave me his old Server Blade. Inside sits 2 Xeon Processors and 8gigs of ram and not to sure of everything else.

I am mainly posting because... I really dont know what to do with it. I would say i just an average user with computers. I play video games and am currently in college to fullfil a degree in computer science. I have yet to get into any Web design classes. How can i use this heavy beast to my advantage.

I did plug it in and all it got to was the start up bios load screen and just sat there. Wasnt able to press F2 Del or F12 or what not.

So pretty much how can i use this to my advantage.Well, for starters, you could use it as a remote desktop/VNC terminal. You could use it to set up your own personal website. You could run multiple operating systems with Virtualbox/the better but pricier VMWare Workstation. You could use it as a media server. You could use it as a firewall. You can also use it as your everyday computer and INSTALL a desktop-geared operating system on it. Whatever you do on a PC you can do on a server, only multiple times fast.

As for video games, 8 Gigs of RAM and 2 Xeon processors by far exceed the requirements of even, say, Crysis, which is known for its poor optimization, but you will probably need to have a graphics card upgrade-servers were not meant to be plugged into a display. Preferably something high-end, as the graphics card is sure to be the bottleneck in this massive beast of a system. You could be a game host, speaking of games.

What else is there inside the server box? Only the motherboard and RAM? What is the make and model of the server motherboard?I'm guessing its  Dell. Service Tag JYVQ851

I would like to set up my own web site. I wanna start an on line portfolio for future employers to look at my work.

Is it really just like a Tower? My uncle did tell me that the on board video was the downfall cause that is not what servers go for really. I would not mind putting on like a private WOW server on it to allow a bunch of friends to LOG onto it. No clue how to start about going to do that.

Im also hoping that i can set this up to allow classmates access it when working on group projects and Senior Projects.heres a photo! hope they help understand what i have. Ill hook it back up and take a pic of the screen it stops on when i boot it.

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]A server is pretty much identical to a tower, only it is not meant to be used as one and is optimized for I/O access. I can't see any expansion ports (PCI-E x1/x16, PCI, and maybe even AGP if it is very old.) from the pictures you have posted though. As for putting another graphics card in, you will be out of luck if you can't find any PCI-E x16 ports on the motherboard. Most servers include a lousy onboard graphics card ~128 MB or so, which will not be enough to play even simple. 2D OpenGL games. This is your Dell server:  HTTP://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=k12&catid=-1&impid=-1&os=WLH&osl=en&ServiceTag=JYVQ851Awesome! Thanks for the info. Any tips on setting it up?The Service Tag gets you a lot of info, but I see no manuals.  I'm not sure it has a video card, all communication could be via ethernet.  A blade without the blade server is probably useless.Well I had that same idea but it has it's own PSU and two VGA outputs. Well I had that same idea but it has it's own PSU and two VGA outputs.
yeah I noticed the VGA port too-it definitely has its own (lousy) onboard graphics, just as your uncle said, but it will be useless for gaming.

are there any ports like these on the motherboard? if so, you will be able to upgrade your graphics card.

Are there any hard DRIVES installed? If so SATA or IDE?
Are there any DVD drives installed? Try booting from DVD and see what you get.

It could be that your server stops booting because it has failed to detect a hard drive. You have sparked a few lightbulds in my mind.
I have built a few computers and it keeps swaying my mind from that fact this is just almost like a regular Tower.
I wouldnt have thought that this could hold a video card in it cause its a blade (Flat) But i do see 2 PCI-E slots. It does also have a DVD-rom and FLOPPY. I am having trouble finding the hard drive though. That it probaly why it cant boot. Quote from: Shrk on August 11, 2011, 08:33:18 PM
Well I had that same idea but it has it's own PSU and two VGA outputs.
It mostly likely has onboard video.  Probably standard VGA, 640x480, no drivers needed.  Probably boots to an embedded OS of some kind.Yay! PCI-E! there you go, you can put just about any (modern) graphics card in, provided your PSU is up to the job, ~1000 Watts or more, I'd say, considering you have 2 Xeons in there.

The DVD-ROM is probably IDE, if so just hook up another hard drive, set the jumpers (on the hard drive) to Master and you should be good to go.

Solve : Difference between VNC viewer and remote desktop?

    Answer»

I use remote desktop and VNC viewer at work to log into another computer at another site at work. These computers are used for a/c controls. Remote desktop responds better than VNC. I am wondering what the difference between the two is.VNC (Virtual Network Computing) is a 3rd party software that makes it possible to view and interact with a computer from any other computer or device connected to the internet.

Remote Desktop Connection is software package of Microsoft. It is a technology that ALLOWS you to sit at a computer (sometimes called the client computer) and connect to a remote computer (sometimes called the host computer) in a different location.

Try also you own Google search.  RDP has the side effect of locking the WORKSTATION remotely - in other words, while you're viewing the screen remotely, a local user cannot view the same screen.  VNC is great for remote support if you WANT to "see what the user sees".

RDP has some advanced features like connecting devices, audio and MAPPED drives between local and remote computers.  VNC doesn't allow this natively (although some VNC client/servers have built on VNC to allow file transfer - e.g. TightVNC).

Later versions of RDP are pretty secure (which PREVIOUSLY couldn't be said) and RDP is generally much easier to set up than VNC, in Windows environments.  VNC on the other hand is the better choice for cross-platform applications (Mac to Windows to Linux).

I am trying to help a friend connect all their computers together.
I am confused and frustrated, so I walked away for a moment.
User has four computers and two printers, one router in their home.
    1. Dell Desktop, Windows XP SP3, connecting wirelessly, has HP Photosmart7600 attached.
    2. H-P laptop, Windows 7, connecting wirelessly.
    3. Dell XPS Desktop, running Windows XP SP3, wired to router, has HP Photosmart 7300 attached.
    4. Dell laptop, Windows 7, connected wirelessly.

    All computers have internet access.
All computers can print to all printers (wirelessly for all, except for each DT connected to local PTR).
All computers can see each other.
All computers belong to "WORKGROUP" workgroup, and have different names.

UNABLE to SHARE PICTURES from either laptop to anybody else. (XP computers or the other Windows 7 laptop)
UNABLE to share DOCUMENTS from DELL desktop (#1) to anybody else.

Comes up with message that ..... user doesn't have permissions.....
Already verified that the correct folders (Pictures, documents) were shared.
    What did I overlook? Quote

    user doesn't have permissions.....
When you do a share you have to set permissions.
On the share pane look for the permissions. Thanks for mentioning that!
I gave all users Read/Write/Full Control over this network, befpore I posted my original message.
Actually, there is only two users, and they have the same login for both their laptops and their desktops.
Disappointed that there are not more replies from more KNOWLEDGABLE system administrators.
Anybody else have any ideas?Sorry to see nobody wants to GET into this.
Windows networking, at is best, is good. Never excellent.
    You can either:
1.) Re-do windows network wizard on every PC on the network.
    2. ) Setup a network DOMAIN. (I can't help you with that)
    3. Install a Third-Party tool on all most of all PCs on the network.

About the only thing that really works in Cisco Network Magic.
The free trial is 15 DAYS, enough time to find out what is wrong.

Cisco - Home Networking Software - Set up and Manage Your Network.

It works for me. After I get the network up, I discontinue the product and the networks still works, most of the time.In a workgroup, when connecting between Windows machines, the "client" machine will by default transmit the username and password of the currently logged on user, when connecting to the remote machine.  So it helps to make sure that you're using identical usernames and passwords on all machines.

Obviously make sure that file and printer sharing is switched on, on all machines.

Double-check the settings in the Windows Firewall (or other third party firewall).  Make sure that "File and printer sharing" is enabled in Windows Firewall (TCP/UDP ports 137 to 139 and 445 generally).

Solve : Multi-OS network, sharing, and errors?

    Answer»

Alright, this is driving me nuts. I'm helping a friend set up a small network in which files are stored on one computer that the others can access as needed. Problem is, they can't all see the hosting computer for some reason.

First, the computers' OSes on the network:
    1. Host computer, desktop: Ubuntu Linux, shared folder containing shared files.
    2. Laptop: Windows Vista Home Premium
    3. Laptop: Windows Vista Home Premium (Acer Aspire 4520)
    4. Laptop: Windows 7 Home Premium
    5. Laptop: Windows 7 Home Premium
    6. Laptop: Windows 7 Home Premium

All computers connect over a wireless network. All are on the same workgroup. All computers except three can see about 50 other computers on this network (Computer 3 can only see itself, computer 2, computer 4, and computer 5). All computers except 3 can see the host and access the files. Computer 3 gives this error:
    Quote

    Windows cannot access \\hostcom\

Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.

    Error code: 0x80004005
    Unspecified error

When I click Diagnose, it attempts to identify the problem, then:
    Quote
Windows sent the name to the DNS server and the server responded the name was unknown.

I've tried clearing the DNS cache (completed successfully, no change).

I've CHECKED and double-checked the network settings for computer 3, all seems right. It connects to the network fine, can access the internet through the printer, but still can't see the host computer.

I've searched around, but haven't found anything really helpful. Maybe I'm not looking for the right things. Any suggestions?Hello quaxo!

If I may ask, does computer 3 able to ping host computer?

Yep, no problem there. 0% loss.Ok, a little update. It's still not working on wireless but...

I took it and did a wire connection straight to the router. Works fine. Unfortunately, it needs to be wireless. So what might be set right for the wired connection that isn't for the wireless that would stop this one computer from being able to access the host on wireless? I'm looking, but I can't seem to see what's different in the settings for the two Vista computers' network settings. Are all of the computers on at once? I one had a router that wouldn't allow computer to computer transfers wireless after i had so many connected. It simply couldn't handle all the connections - bought a better router and problem solved. Although Ive got my whole house wired up now so I don't get this problem anymore.

Try borrowing a router - then if it works go and buy a new one.

You could also maybe try resetting the router?

I don't think the problem here is with the computers I think its just with the router - anyone else possibly agree? Quote from: immental1200 on June 07, 2011, 01:24:29 PM

If it was the router, I don't think it wouldn't be affecting just computer 3. It's always just computer 3.Actually yes I wasn't fully awake last night. Are all the computers on the same workgroup? And do they all have individual computer NAMES? If there are 2 the same this may hinder the file sharing.Yep, set all the workgroups to the same. I'll have to double check about the names. I think they're all different, but I'll look again Friday when I go back there. They're using the wire on that one computer until we sort this out. Like I said, computer 3 works fine if it's wired, it's just the wireless part that won't let it in.No idea then quaxo... last suggestion is see how many PCs the router allows to be connected wirelessly at once, had an old one where they could connect but not see each other.

Sounds like NetBIOS isn't bound to the wireless adapter.  Go to the properties of the Wireless adapter - does "Client for Microsoft Networks" appear in the list?  Is it ticked?  How about "File and printer sharing"?

In this scenario, you should FIND that connecting via IP works even if connecting by host name doesn't (e.g. \\192.168.1.5\sharename instead of \\hostname\sharename).

Solve : Internet on Specific Computer Slowed Down?

    Answer»

On my particular computer my internet has very recently become unreliable. speedtest.net has shown that my internet has gone from 20mb/s to about 9mb/s at best, and SOMETIMES going to 1mb/s. This has only happened in the past week, and is not only slower at the best of times, but unreliable as well. My upload doesn't seem to have changed much.

I am using wireless and other computers on my network are getting the typical speed of 20mb/s so I'm confident that it's only my computer. I am also the only PC in this Mac infested house however, but i'm pretty sure that's not the problem considering this has only happened recently.

I uninstalled a few programs and that seemed to have helped a bit, one in particular seemed to make a NOTICEABLE difference. It could POSSIBLY be my processor since i've been having some problems with it but i'm not confident that it would result in the recent problems and the only reason I bring it up is to try and consider everything. I have more I could guess at but I'm rather confident they aren't related to my current problem, so maybe just go over some more basic trouble shooting with me first, and if that doesn't work we'll look at some of my other problems.

I've already tried RESTARTING both my modem and wireless router. I also called my ISP about a week ago in regards to a slower connection, but that was solved with just a router and modem reset. Not only that but it was a household problem, not just my machine.

Help as soon as possible would be appreciated!

EDIT: I'm using Windows 7.The first thing you should know is that you are sharing internet connection with other computers. So a 20 mb/s will not be practically achieved. Wired connections are faster and more secured. Accumulation of junk files, temporary files and infection could also make your PC cause certain lagging. You will see the difference on these when connecting on LAN either directly on the modem or the router itself and using the connection alone. When you say "recently" - have you tried using system restore, to take your computer back to just before you noticed this slowness?  It could be that a recent Windows update (or something like that) caused the problem.  Has anything else changed?  Have you, for example, put a baby monitor or a cordless phone in the vicinity of the Windows PC?  (Baby monitors, cordless phones, A/V senders, etc. all interfere with wireless networks.)How is the computer that is having the issue connected?

Wireless see if you can connect it to the modem or router with a cable and then see if that improves the speeds.

Wired (connected by a cable) try it wireless to see if that makes a difference.

Make sure to turn off the wireless if you are TRYING the wired.

Is there certain times that this happens, are others on, how many computers are connected to the network, and what are they browsing when this happening.

Is that system or any others running any P2P or Torrent?

Solve : Computer can't connect to Internet when connected to gigabit switch?

    Answer»

My computer is a desktop running Vista and up until now I've been able to connect to the Internet through the gigabit switch (which is connected to the router) but now it can't.  However, when I plug the computer directly into the router (through the wall socket into the router) the Internet works fine.  When try the diagnose and repair the problem it says, "There might be a problem with one or more network adapters on this computer" and there are some options to choose (none of which resolve the problem):
    1) Plug a cable into the network adapter "Local Area Connection* 12"
    2) Automatically get NEW IP settings for the network adapter "Local Area Connection"
    3) A problem with your network router or broadband modern might be preventing an Internet connection
    4) Reset the network adapter "Local Area Connection" (replaces OPTION 2 after I click it and it tries to repair)
Again, none of those options work...but they COULD be of help to you...
    A
What should I do to fix that?Could you provide a little more info?  If you load the command prompt (click start-->run, type "cmd", hit ENTER) and enter "IPCONFIG /all" you'll get a screen full of information.  Could you cut and paste that in here, please?

    Solve : LANs and WANs?

    Answer»
I'm starting CCNA 1 & 2 in September, so i'm doing some early studying and i'm reading about LANs and WANs.

    LANs .....i get

WANs   ...... i have a question. Do WANs use LANs to connect or are they using a completely different medium??

For example, a train from EDINBURGH to London can pass through many stations. (WANs using LANs to connect LANs)

OR is it one main link that just connects cities, for example??

I've been searching the internet and can not find the answer in 'laymans terms' , there is so much terminology. Also, does anyone know of any beginners guide to NETWORKING, Cheers.Summary here:  http://www.diffen.com/difference/LAN_vs_WANYeah, read that one and this is what i dont understand, for WANs 'connection' it states -

Computers connected to a wide-area network are often connected through public networks, such as the telephone system. They can also be connected through leased lines or satellites.

That means they are connected by LANs, right ?
No.  The interface between the LAN & WAN is the cable modem or DSL modem.  LANs can connect to each other directly(as in your own home or business) OR over a WAN, i.e. your home has a LAN (1 or more computers), and CH has a LAN, but are connected to each other over WAN.

but what connects WANs........do WANs connect by utilising LANs OR do they have there own medium.First of all there is no firm definition of a WAN.

Here is a good article on connection speeds of PRESENT day WANs.

WANs have a lower data transfer rate as compared to LANs

That was true years ago, but certainly not true today.  WANs are most often used over backbone fiber going from city to city using SONET. Quote from: reddevilggg on July 15, 2011, 05:02:55 PM

Solve : Small problem with expanding my network?

    Answer»

I have a home network (which I administrate), and it's layout (what you need to know) is as such (the network is actually larger):

    Code: [Select]192.168.0.1 (gateway)
    |-192.168.0.157 (hpDesktop)
    |-192.168.0.18 (cWindowsWLAN)
    '-192.168.0.250 (Linux)

I am moving the "cWindowsWLAN" computer to my room. The problem is, the wireless signal is not strong enough to reach my room (the WLAN adapter on the Linux box is in the hallway with a very long USB cable). I will also sometime have a third computer there, so I grabbed a spare router we had in the house.

I am trying to get the network set up so it WOULD be like

    Code: [Select]192.168.0.1 (gateway)
    |-192.168.0.157 (hpDesktop)
    '-192.168.0.250 (Linux)
      '-192.168.0.100 (router)
        |-192.168.0.10 (cWindowsLAN)
        '-192.168.0.? (NEW computer)

So I go and set up bridging on the Linux, and it can reach the router and the main network. HOWEVER, the main network does not see the router.

Any other ideas? I need the network to be set up as is in the latter diagram, with the only wireless link between "gateway" and "Linux"

And yes, I have to have those IPs accessable throughout the network(is there an Edit function?)

I just reestablished the bridge with the following commands: (eth0 is LAN, ra0 is WLAN)
    Code: [Select]# brctl addbr br0
    # brctl addif br0 eth0
    # brctl addif br0 ra0 ; ifconfig ra0 0.0.0.0 ; ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 ; ifconfig br0 192.168.0.250 ; route add default gw gateway

    Pinging targets:
Code: [Select]PING gateway (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.

i am using my phone to connect to internet in my computer using a 3G connetion. i am using firefox 5 but still getting a very low SPEED. please help3G provides peak data rates of at LEAST 200 kbit/s.  This is only 4X FASTER than dial-up & 10% or less than the speed of DSL or cable.I agree with Computer_Commando.
Many TIMES, you get a faster connection speed by pulling into the local fastfood joint, buying a snack, and using their in-house wireless connection for free.  Many libraries, CITY Halls, and coffee shops also have free wifi.   Your laptop wireless modem will connect to their wireless DSL connection at 11-54MB, then their DSL/Cable connection is usually 6-12MB.  That's still a LOT faster than the 3G connection (think of the 3G as a dial-up modem speed connector).

If your 3G connection is to a desktop/tower computer, you might be better off paying for "DSL lite", where the telephone compay gives you a home DSL connection without charging you all the extras for local and long distance telephone services.  Just continue living off your cellular telephone.

Solve : toshiba l305 with xp. Atheros AR5BXB63 wireless drivers won't install?

    Answer»

Got drivers from Toshiba EU site. They just will not recognize the wifi card.Have you made sure that the wifi switch is on?
Try the main Toshiba website-http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp?nav=DownloadWhat happens prior to the driver error? Any recent OS install and or changes with the laptop?Yup, switch is on.  EVEN reinstalled chipset drivers to make sure I got a clean start. The OS installs Realtek NETWORK adapter RTL8102E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC. No errors just driver does not recognize wireless card. Thanks for taking a look. It's got me stumped. Is XP the original operating system that came with your laptop? You need to post the complete model series of your Toshiba L305-S_ _ _ on the given link to find the correct driver for your wireless card.Laptop was a Vista OS. Drive (Western Digital) crapped out. Put in a Seagate and INSTALLED XP. It is a L305 S5944. I'm thinking i'm gonna disassemble and see if the Wifi card is any good.
Thanks for help. Toshiba won't have those drivers for XP, since your model shipped with Vista.
Atheros AR5BXB63 wireless drivers:  http://filecrop.com/atheros-ar5bxb63-driver-xp.htmlC_C. Downloaded both the RAR and the EXE. I'll give them a shot. Thanks for the info. Let you know. That's the only website I've found that has any support for Altheros, even though it says:  Unofficial Altheros website
Altheros is now a division of Qualcomm:  http://www.qca.qualcomm.com/
There is no support there.  Found this interesting:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qualcomm_AtherosNo go. Driver installs no problems. Just can't seem to be able to recognize it and add to devices. Maybe there's a generic 802.11 driver.  Are you sure this is what you have?  toshiba l305 with xp. Atheros AR5BXB63
Toshiba has no listing for l305
