Solve : How to avoid overwrite the passwd and shadow file? |
Answer» Dear All, I want to avoid someone to overwrite the shadow when log on as root You can't. root is omnipotent, by definition.Oh! I want to aviod two root users to edit the /etc/passwd , I don't want to set the acl to complicate the permission on the file. I think your best bet is going to be to set up other administrative users and maybe even prevent root from logging on (other than at the console?). I assume you're thinking of SELinux's capabilities - there are some GOOD walkthroughs >here<. |

Solve : Open windows files within *censored* Small Linux?? |
Answer» *censored* is 'the d-word'. *censored* is 'the d-word'. Is it 1812 where you live? What did you mean by "within Windows XP"? If you are using virtualization SOFTWARE such as VMWare you can have "shared folders" which are folders or drives on the host which are visible to the guest OS. As you have not said what virtualization software you are using it would be hard to be more helpful at this stage. Applications running in Linux can work with much more than TXT files. Just about EVERY image, sound, video, document, and many script formats (perl, python, java etc) can be handled. With WINE many Windows programs can be run. You can't just see the windows partition under Linux? Should be auto-mounted ... Also, what's with the censor thing? Quote from: Raptor on February 29, 2012, 11:39:54 AM You can't just see the windows partition under Linux? Should be auto-mounted ... Quote I am running DSL within Windows XP I suspect he is running DSL in a VM using Qemu. Oh right DSL as in *censored* Small Linux. I thought DSL as in Digital Subscriber Line.1812? What? The 'd-word' is auto censored. And yes I am using Qemu. I agree that using a bigger OS is better but I am on a ski trip and left my computer home, I am using my dad's work computer with limited privileges so I can't install anything, and I want to watch .mov files taken with my helmet cam. I downloaded zip VLC but it is really laggy so I want to watch them in DSL.Can you boot from a live Linux distro? Can you run an FTP server in DSL? If so, you could use FTP at the command line on the host computer to send the files to the DSL filesystem. For the benefit of all, here are some useful links about - Dämn Small Linux. Short history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damn_Small_Linux Nice Review: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=damnsmall With a small OS in your pocket, you can use a borrowed computer and have all your own stuff on the USB thumb drive. It does not require any hard drive space. And yes, it does read windows volumes. And DSL has many brothers and sisters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions And if you can not say *censored*, just say Dämn ä <--I don't have any experience using Qemu. I do know VirtualBox allows you to specify partitions, prior to booting, that you want access to while in the OS. You can also include thumb drives and other peripherals to connect as well. |

Solve : How to install Linux?? |
Answer» How do I install Linux but without the launcher and to lock it down so the users cannot make changes? Any TIPS would be helpful. I have install Ubuntu but I need to lock it down.If you have a need to lock down any OS, you have to think about password protection of the BIOS. Otherwise a user can just use the BIOS to boot from a USB or CD and bypass the security of the OS. Check your BIOS documentation to see what options you have. If you have a need to lock down any OS, you have to think about password protection of the BIOS. That is a good suggestion, Geek. Quote from: Raptor on MARCH 11, 2012, 02:32:48 PM That is a good suggestion, Geek.Thank you raptor. Have not heard back from the OP. For the BENEFIT of all, it is all too easy to reset a BIOS password by removing the CMOOS battery. But that is a physical intrusion. You can make it hard by using screws with special heads on the chassis of you computer.BIOS protection does not protect the hard drive. That can always be removed. The only real option is encryption, if you're that concerned about security. In my experience, all BIOS passwords do is lead to a false sense of security. OP: what do you mean by "without the launcher"?I'd set modifiable permissions for everything to admin only. Heck, superuser only. But I think, depending on your version of Linux, it does that by default. Also, change the default root password to something only you (or the sys admin) knows. You don't WANT the guy booting into single user mode then running a couple of command line tricks to blow away the password... Quote cough cough... |

Solve : Screen corruption upon boot Linux Ubuntu? |
Answer» I've got a copy of Linux Ubuntu 11.10 64bit installed on one of my machines (VIA chipset, AMD processor) and every time it boots, the screen starts acting as if though the videocard is defective.
What I would try is to get another version of Ubuntu in 32 bit, boot it from the 'live' CD and see how it goes. Also, the Ubuntu people have a very dative chat room. If other people have had this kind of issue they might know about it. Quote from: Raptor on February 02, 2012, 05:14:15 AM the screen starts acting as if though the videocard is defective What do you mean? What happens? Do you get a "no signal" message? Quote from: Raptor on February 02, 2012, 05:14:15 AM It also starts working again I run the recovery console which lets me boot into Linux and use it like I normally would. Are you talking about choosing recovery mode from the grub menu? What do you do exactly? Quote from: Raptor on February 02, 2012, 05:14:15 AM What do you mean? What happens? Do you get a "no signal" message? This. Try Ctrl-Alt-+ (numeric KEYPAD) to cycle through X Windows resolution modes. Ctrl-Alt-F1 (/F2/F3/etc.) will get you to a console. From there you can log into a shell for further diagnosis or to edit the X Windows config files. Quote What do you mean? What happens? Do you get a "no signal" message? At first I get the desktop with the mouse arrow but without the taskbar. Then I move the mouse and the screen just garbles up into something that resembles a broken laptop videocard. Quote What I would try is to get another version of Ubuntu in 32 bit, boot it from the 'live' CD and see how it goes. It has worked, it's not a compatibility issue. The videocard is just fine. It happens at a very specific instance and never beyond or before that. Quote Are you talking about choosing recovery mode from the grub menu? What do you do exactly? Yes, that is the recovery menu I am speaking of. Here's what I do:
Voila, corruption REMOVED until the next reboot. Weird, eh? I just recall installing an application that monitors Daemons and caches files based on how often they're used thinking it would improve performance (Which is kind of shoddy on this machine Asus A8V/AMD Athlon 64 S939/512MB DDR 1/PATA 80GB|7200RPM). I believe the corruption started before that, though. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on February 02, 2012, 06:40:15 AM This. I just did a warm reboot and the problem occurred again on normal boot. I have pressed CTRL + ALT + Numeric Plus (At the same time, right?) but this doesn do anything. Switching to a console does work. However, I have no clue what to do from there. Also, I am using a HP Ergo Ultra VGA 15" CRT monitor so perhaps it is indeed a refresh rate or resolution mismatch. Refresh rate, almost certainly. Any other monitors available to you? Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on February 03, 2012, 05:35:43 AM Refresh rate, almost certainly. Any other monitors available to you? But the monitor is not at fault, right? It runs just fine for hours at the time. Unfortunately, all the other monitors I have are in use and too large to be fitted where the current one is standing. I'll look into editing whatever files are related to the refresh rate and resolution under Linux. This is the way to go, yes?A CRT can give up the ghost like this after a while. Start here re configuration. So I've been looking up a lot of information on how to adjust the screen resolution from within the terminal but I'm not having much luck. When I use xrandr it tells me that no screen is available. When I use the GUI tool it calls the screen "unknown". Any clues on where to start? I also get conflicting reports about what exactly constitutes the program used for displaying stuff in Ubuntu. I run into a lot of old posts and the suggestions there are outdated. A lot of things seem to change rapidly in Linux land. You're right - a lot does change. Is reinstalling out of the question at this stage? Ubuntu/Debian are pretty good at correctly detecting hardware upon first install. Mind you, they might baulk at such a crusty old user monitor. Well I guess I could reinstall but it is sort of a brute-force method and I know how to reinstall Ubuntu. I'd rather learn how to resolve this problem. I know the problem lies in Ubuntu not detecting the screen properly so from what I understand, all I need to do is change or add a text file that tells Ubuntu what resolution and refresh rate to use. The odd thing is that using the recovery console does allow it to boot properly so I assume that just like in Windows, Ubuntu has an option to boot using a VGA-safe mode. Oh well. I'll look into it again when I have some more time. Maybe ask on the Ubuntu boards. That's your best bet. X is a complex beast and I've lost track with it's specific implementation in the LATEST distros. It used to boil down to one engine/drive and a config file. There's a bit more to it now. Ubuntu boards (or Debian boards) are a good place to go for the full gen.Raptor, do lspci -k Post the output here. Code: [Select]00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. Solve : Ubuntu Won't Accept Wireless Password? |
Answer» Please bare with me and be patient I'm somewhat new to Linux, I'm trying out various alternative OS's, so give it to me in laymen's terms. Please bare with me Maybe if you buy me a few drinks ... There's no such thing as a network "password"; are you sure you're not trying to type the network key in the password prompt that is meant to elevate your privileges? Because that requires the password of your administrator account in Linux and not the network key... As the passwords are the same I'm pretty sure that it's not the case. That and I'm sure it's asking for the network password or key, or whatever else you want to call it. I was meant to add that I IDIOT proofed the passwords. (Although the numberlock frequently gets the better of me) Also my computer does not like sending liquids via the internet. It just sparks and crackles... Quote from: Accessless on March 02, 2012, 05:27:17 AM Also my computer does not like sending liquids via the internet. It just sparks and crackles... He was tactfully correcting your spelling. You wrote "bare with me" which means "get undressed with me". If you meant "be patient with me" you should have written "bear with me". I forgot about this topic. Not very knowledgeable on wireless in Linux, always use cable for optimimum results. Are you sure the correct drivers are installed for your WLAN CARDS? I recall there being some issues with that a few years back where some drivers would not support WPA.He is asking about Ubuntu on a wireless. He needs the correct key for the wireless network. At some point in time wireless ROUTERS are now doing a tough security instead of the older WEP type security. Two runarounds: Connect directly to a Ethernet cable. Set the wireless router to no security. (Using WEP is about the same as no security. Almost.) More mere information on new security rules, consult the documentation and the web site of the rout3r manufacture. This provides some background information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_Equivalent_Privacy But does not has answer to the issue at hand. A new update as well I'm now trying Mint… Exact same results. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 06, 2012, 05:05:13 PM He is asking about Ubuntu on a wireless. So you're saying that the rumours about Linux's Wi-Fi abilities being a baked potato where true? Quote from: Raptor on March 06, 2012, 09:43:06 AM I forgot about this topic. Not very knowledgeable on wireless in Linux, always use cable for optimum results. I looked this up, the network card that I'm using is apparently on the definitely supported list. The manufacturer does provide drivers but I can't work out how to install them (something about having to compile the desired FILES? Helpful at any rate if you have little experience with Wi-Fi drivers and no idea about the layout of the Linux file system, unless I'm misinterpreting it). Also it's not limited to one piece of hardware. Quote from: Salmon Trout on March 06, 2012, 05:58:51 AM He was tactfully correcting your spelling. You wrote "bare with me" which means "get undressed with me". If you meant "be patient with me" you should have written "bear with me". Why would I want a bear in the room with me? Sounds kind of dangerous. To be honest I did think about this before I typed it but both options sounded/looked equally ridiculous. Also my spelling was perfect; my grammar was off. You will never get a reputation for being a grammar Nazi like that. Find out what kind of security is being mused on the wireless network. The new security requires a very long key. EDIT Here is a tutorial that may help some. My Linksys WRT54GL and Ubuntu wireless settings http://johnbokma.com/mexit/2007/12/29/my-linksys-wrt54gl-ubuntu-wireless-settings.html Quote from: Accessless on March 08, 2012, 03:09:01 AM my spelling was perfect; my grammar was off. Your spelling was wrong. It's like writing "loose" when you mean "lose". It's a spelling error. |

Solve : Cannot uninstall package, cant install any others? |
Answer» I have tried some mods to the spash screen, and the latest one i installed, it gives me this error when i try to remove it What you'll find there: My guess is you will not have the problem with the 32 bit version. But I am often wrong. Please come back. I NEED to know if I made a bad guess. download the .deb file again, and place it in /var/cache/apt/archives Or, you might also try putting it in /tmp and try to remove it since the package manager may have installed it directly from there when you installed it from the browser; but the /tmp file is cleared on boot. It is 64 Intel. I would also perfer not to do a re-install because of the fact i did just a short while again and just now have everything reconfigured and working (until this happened) also, i do not know how to place the .deb file in the archives folder, as i believe it is marked under ownership of root, meaning that i am UNABLE to write to that pariicular area. And i have not been successfull in the copy command in terminal to transfer files into the "root owned" areas of the hard disk. I appreciate the current help so far. Thanks Try uninstalling it through the software center. Solve : Can I create a command with a system name? |
Answer» I'm relatively new to UNIX and am playing and experimenting. I would like to create a COMMAND in my home directory with the same name as a system command. For instance, I would like to create a ls command. I create a file named ls. I edit it and put in one echo command. I make the file executable, and I put my current directory and home directory as the first two in my PATH. Yet when I issue the command: ls I still get the system command. Is there something else I need to do, or is it not POSSIBLE? Here is an item of interest. The Ubuntu default shell was changed. It's only used for scripts that specify a /bin/sh shebang, which is usually limited to scripts that start during the boot process. Add to this the fact that that change happened 6 years ago... |

Solve : Wine Installation Fails To Install Reason Ubuntu? |
Answer» i am trying to install reason, the somewhat WELL known music production program, onto my ubuntu computer How about using a native Linux alternative program (stating the obvious, I know)...? LMMS is pretty good, to provide a specific example. Regarding Reason on Wine, it's current rating is "Garbage" for version 6.0. Apparently version 5.0 is rated as "gold", though. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=811 Quote The copy protection system used on this version doesn't works well with Wine. It has the option to use either online authorization or a USB hardware key for which it needs to install it's drivers. This driver installation fails and makes it impossible to start the application, even though it would have the option to be used in a free demo mode, which let's you try all functions of the software, it only limits the ability of loading project files and exporting your songs. |

Solve : Modify bash_profile to set permissions automatically? |
Answer» Hey all - Why are you using the pipe symbol? Did you mean ';' instead of '|'? I want them to execute the commands with one command, not three. The whole idea is to simplify setting permissions for WEB pages. The problem is it seems to want to execute all sessions at the same time, rather than in order. I tried using ';' instead of '|', and I got the same results. What is the difference, in theory, between ';' and '|'?Pipe takes the output of the command to the left of the pipe and sends it as input to the command to the right of the pipe. I really don't think you want to execute these commands simultaneously. If for example the first command happened to run a millisecond after the second and third commands, you'd just end up undoing the effects of the latter commands. (Think about it.) Anyway, as it happens, the Gnu version of chmod can do all this in one command, so how about this instead: Code: [Select]alias chmodWeb="chmod g-rwx,u+rwx,o+rx *" The ".*" is redundant in Linux/Unix. You're thinking of Windows/DOS. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on March 22, 2012, 05:01:12 AM Pipe takes the output of the command to the left of the pipe and sends it as input to the command to the right of the pipe. This worked. Thanks a ton! You're welcome. |

Solve : My computer is doing outbound TCP-FIN scanning and I wish to make it stop? |
Answer» I have a System76 Pangolin Performance (Panp8). It has 4 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-2410M CPU 2.30GHz × 4 processor. My hard drive has a total of 250 GB, but the partitioning makes it a little more complicated than that (which I'll explain more about a little later in this post); the OS I'm currently running has 102 GB of disk space. I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu, 12.04, but I was using 11.10 when this problem first started. I don't know much about this kind of thing, but a quick Google suggests you should ask for router log files and check the destination IPs alleged to be scanned by your machine. A careful reading of the log should tell you if it really is your machine, and if so, you might get a clue from the ports being used and you could check the domain e.g. here Yes, I am connecting to a wireless network in a building. How'd you know? And when I look at the log files, how will I be able to determine whether it's my machine or if someone is spoofing my IP? Quote Yes, I am connecting to a wireless network in a building. How'd you know? And when I look at the log files, how will I be able to determine whether it's my machine or if someone is spoofing my IP?A wireless router gives out local IP using DHCP. So the local IP may change once in awhile. But the router identifies each user by name and MAC. If somebody was spoofing you, they would have to have your MAC. Quote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_addressThis confirms that MAC sis used on wireless networks. Compatibility with "un chapeau rouge" for one, and the fact that it uses .rpm while the the *buntu family uses .deb. Those are the biggest ones, I think.i know ubuntu WORKS with .rpm files, im not sure if its as streamlined as fedora or mint though |

Solve : Linux GPU Driver's - Any suggestions? |
Answer» Hello I am trying to play games on Linux thru Wine and I can get the games to run, BUT for the lack of correct GPU drivers I am getting poor quality. Even though these video CARDS are not top of the line I tried a GeForce 8400GS with 512MB DDR3 as well as a AMD ATI Radeon 5450 HD with 1GB of DDR3 and am getting poor frame RATES because the drivers are not tapping into the full capabilities of the video cards. Lots of people suggested using ATI instead of Nvidia because Nvidia has no Linux drivers available. That's nonsense. I have an nvidia video card and am using the proprietary video driver. The easy way to install drivers in Linux Mint: Click Menu > Control Center > Hardware > Additional Drivers. It will search for available drivers and give you options to install or activate them. Or if you want to go to Nvidia's website to download the driver for your GeForce 8400 GS, you can get it there too. http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-295.59-driver.html or http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/44867 Those are the 32 bit drivers. If you have a 64 bit OS get http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-295.59-driver.html or http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/44868 It's BEST to just install them from the control center. |

Solve : Can I use Virtual machine to access a physical drive?? |
Answer» Hello, all! I am here with a confusing question. Hope you guys can help. What I am hoping to do, is boot into Ubuntu (drive 2) and use a Virtual Machine program to run the windows installation in Drive A. I want any and all changes I make in the virtual machine to be saved to Drive A. You can't do exactly what you are asking; but you can virtualise a Windows partition (make a VM that is a copy) and then run that in VMWare Player under Linux. There is a free tool called VMWare Converter. I used it to make a VM of the XP install on my old Shuttle and I have it on my new one and I run it under Windows 7 and also Linux Mint 9. http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ You can also modify such a VMWare VM to run under Sun Virtualbox. http://www.sysprobs.com/physical-virtual-virtualbox-virtualbox-p2v Thank you! SAD I can not do what I wanted, but your suggestion sounds very useful~! I'm not familiar with virtual machine [VM] you could do a reasonable imitation of what you wish on VirtualBox {VB} you can save all the files wherever you want you can save what is described as an "appliance" [snapshot] so your xp install is sustainable as long as you have a reasonably current version of VB https://www.virtualbox.org/ on whatever linux host you like [your mileage may vary] if nothing else Appliances speed up installing windows on vb You can ALWAYS share the host systems content with the guest, which reduces the size of the file [xp] to 10-20g [os & programs only] in day to day use saving to state reduces start up time to 15-20 sec on my xp install I don't use XP very often, after sometime using linux, you'll FIND workarounds for all the apps you feel are windows only Quote from: Garthhh on August 03, 2012, 09:44:46 PM I'm not familiar with virtual machine [VM] I have tried using both VMWare and Virtual Box, but it seems I can not load an OS that is installed on a physical hard drive, which is what I wanted. Also, I run Windows 7, not XP, but thank you for the advice. The programs I use really are Windows only, for example, Steam, a game called Vindictus, and schoolwork for my college must be turned in with a .doc or .docx file type, which is Microsoft Word extensions. Quote from: Mayuukosan on August 04, 2012, 03:10:24 AM it seems I can not load an OS that is installed on a physical hard drive This is correct. You cannot do this. Virtualization environments run virtual machines. Quote and schoolwork for my college must be turned in with a .doc or .docx file type, which is Microsoft Word extensions. Mayuukosan, just fyi, OpenOffice and LibreOffice can both save and read files with those extensions. Documents created in OpenOffice or LibreOffice that are saved with those extensions can be opened and read with Microsoft Word. Ubuntu should have one or the other of those programs. I know this may be a bit off topic. I just wanted to mention that in case you didn't know. Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 04, 2012, 02:01:29 PM Mayuukosan, just fyi, OpenOffice and LibreOffice can both save and read files with those extensions. Documents created in OpenOffice or LibreOffice that are saved with those extensions can be opened and read with Microsoft Word. Ubuntu should have one or the other of those programs. I did not know that! Thank you! Tried it out and works great, so much happier. Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 04, 2012, 03:16:18 AM This is correct. You cannot do this. Virtualization environments run virtual machines. I'm not so sure about that. I've just been running kvm on Fedora and virt-manager gives me the option to specify a raw device as the Virtual IDE drive, so theoretically you could select your physical Windows partition. I've not tested it yet as I dont have a free physical machine to play with atm. Quote from: banjo67xxx on August 06, 2012, 02:09:41 PM I'm not so sure about that. A VM can use a real drive as storage, but you could not run a Windows install. It would protest at the hardware not being the same as when it was installed, for one thing. Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 06, 2012, 03:01:53 PM A VM can use a real drive as storage, but you could not run a Windows install. It would protest at the hardware not being the same as when it was installed, for one thing. Sorry I was forgetting that Windows was so fussy about the hardware changing. Plan B - Create a C: partition with just Windows OS on it for the bare-metal version of Windows Create a D: partition with all the user account stuff Create a virtual drive with just Windows OS on it for the virtual Windows Setup the virtual system to use the virtual C: drive and share the physical D: drive with the other copy of Windows Wow I am glad the conversation is continuing. I am surprised to see all the other information here. Just some more questions, as I am still a bit unclear... Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 06, 2012, 03:01:53 PM A VM can use a real drive as storage, but you could not run a Windows install. It would protest at the hardware not being the same as when it was installed, for one thing. The hardware would be the same, as it is the same machine. Why would it protest that the hardware is different? I have used a disc image of my Windows drive in VMWare and Virtual box with no warnings of this kind. Quote from: banjo67xxx on August 06, 2012, 02:09:41 PM I've just been running kvm on Fedora and virt-manager gives me the option to specify a raw device as the Virtual IDE drive, so theoretically you could select your physical Windows partition. I've not tested it yet as I dont have a free physical machine to play with atm. I have only SATA drives, does this matter? (Probably a stupid question but I have to ask.) I can not find an option for selecting a physical drive in either VMWare or VirtualBox. Only Disc Images. Am I not seeing the option anywhere? Quote from: banjo67xxx on August 06, 2012, 04:18:51 PM Plan B - Would this mean that the Virtual Machine and the booted Windows would keep the same settings and files? The changes on one would apply to the other? What I want is the Windows in my Virtual Machine on Ubuntu to be the same Windows that I can boot to. Same settings, same files, and if I download/change something it is the same for both. If that is what you mean, then TOTALLY YES THANK YOU. But I have the same issue as before: I can not find an option to load an OS from a drive in VMWare or VirtualBox. I am totally open to using other software if it will do what I want. I can save my Virtual Windows to my Windows drive, but it does not change any settings/files on my Windows drive. A few more questions: Since so many people say it is not an option to load an OS from another drive to use on a Virtual Machine, why is this so? Is there a difference for an OS running alone vs. virtually that would make it impossible to link them? What I mean is, is it a limitation of the virtualization software or the OS? Is there something wrong with using a Virtual Machine to run a drive with an OS? I am asking because if what I am doing is against the rules somehow, I want to know. Thank you for all your help, I am new to Virtual machines, so I thought this was common practice, I am surprised to see it is not. Quote from: Mayuukosan on August 06, 2012, 06:01:23 PM The hardware would be the same, as it is the same machine. A virtual machine runs on virtual hardware. That's why it's called a "virtual machine". It seems I have to labour this point. Anyhow, even if you could do it, you'd be in breach of the Windows license. None of these devices are present on the host machine. Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 07, 2012, 11:02:41 AM A virtual machine runs on virtual hardware. That's why it's called a "virtual machine". It seems I have to labour this point. Anyhow, even if you could do it, you'd be in breach of the Windows license. Thank you, I did not know this. I thought that it would run off of the hardware that was present. Not sure why the virtual hardware could not match the physical hardware but I will try to do some research. I also did not know it would be a license breach, thank you for letting me know. I thought that the "virtual machine" was referring only to the software not the hardware. I understand now why I can not run my Windows drive in a virtual machine inside Ubuntu, I think. Thank you, to everyone, for your help. |

Solve : Stupid Question of mine? |
Answer» how can i access files on my pendrive when i plug it into the usb port of a server running ubuntu server 12.04 lts? You have to mount it manually. In general, assuming it's the only USB storage device you would mount it this way (comments preceded with #) That's exactly what I was thinking of Note that depending on your exact configuration (particularly how many drives, partitions, etc. you have on your server), it may not necessarily be sdb1 but (for example) sde1. There should be a command to list devices (similar to the windows diskpart). True, mounting can be tricky if you don't have a device list. There's some good discussion of this problem over at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB Try running the command Code: [Select]sudo fdisk -l which will tell you which device to mount. |

Solve : What Distro, and a Whole Bunch of Newbie Questions? |
Answer» TL;DR at the bottom. TL;DR at the bottom. Very sensible. I know how to keep people's attention. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on September 25, 2012, 10:13:17 AM https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/index.htmlBy installation I actually mean program installation, not OS installation. I may not have made that clear enough in my TL;DR. On Windows, for example, I know that programs are installed to directories with their company name in the Program Files / Program Files (x86) folders and user data goes to the APPDATA folder, etc.. On Ubuntu I don't really know where programs get installed to in a typical installation, but I know it's something to do with a 'Debian' package manager or thereabouts. I think user data gets installed in the folder with your username as its name in files that start with a period mark and then have the name of the program they're storing data for, but for all I know they do something else. For example: .firefox As for all the other links, thanks! They all look very helpful and I'll be sure to get started developing if I get some free time.On Linux and Unix, programs are generally installed into a bin or sbin directory. These are usually located at the file system root / and the /usr directory. Programs have many choices of where to store data or preferences, but ~/.appname is a common choice. Also sometimes used are the usr, share, lib, and var folders located in various locations throughout the disk. |

But my question is, how to put a patch over security holes that are in the programs, securing the web server, etc. Security is all about reducing your attack surface. As you say, firewall-level security needs to be part of your overall security strategy. Some web application firewalls include web query inspection and can provide some measure of security against known attack methods. But I'm guessing you're not using a sophisticated web reverse proxy here. So you need to think about things like:
I follow the H Online, for lots of useful security tidbits. I also subscribe to a couple of black hat RSS feeds, but for obvious reasons, please don't ask me for details of those. http://www.h-online.com/The nice thing about my network, is that it is a small network, that i have complete control over. Its somewhat the realm of a "Home Data Center" meaning i can do what I need to. Is there any use to using Backtrack to find security holes in my own network?
