Solve : How to avoid overwrite the passwd and shadow file?

Answer»

Dear All,

I have no idea to do so the below questions:

1. I add the users and set the password. But I want to avoid SOMEONE to overwrite the shadow when log on as root .
2. The users telnet the server, browser the directory. But the telnet connect is time out. What is the FIRST thing I need to check?

Thanks Quote from: sun_os on January 26, 2012, 05:52:09 AM

You can't.  root is omnipotent, by definition.Oh! I want to aviod two root users to edit the /etc/passwd , I don't want to set the acl to complicate the permission on the file. I think your best bet is going to be to set up other administrative users and maybe even prevent root from logging on (other than at the console?).  I assume you're thinking of SELinux's capabilities - there are some GOOD walkthroughs >here<.

my name is robyn and i was just wanting to KNOW how to reinstall windows on my toshiba laptop and also get adobe player WORKING Do you have Windows installation disks available? To re-install windows, im SURE you will need the system re-install disk like this one

(not this exact one, but one like it, different colors are ok)
If you do not have it, then you will have to find a copy of windows.

and flash does work under ubuntu with a LITTLE bit of tinkering.

Solve : Ubuntu Graphics Problems?

Answer»

I am unsure if this is a driver, hardware, or software ISSUE, however, i will post here ANYWAY.

Ubuntu Linux 11.04 Desktop i386 is installed on an older system. The system boots, and the default background of the grass HAPPENS to be in a verity of psychedelic colors, and appear to only be the background.

In setting, the preview of the background is of the normal COLOR set, however when selected, the background is in a strange bazaar of colors. This is not a monitor problem, from what i have tested with multiple monitors.
ALMOST certainly the wrong driver/version of xf86.

Solve : Open windows files within *censored* Small Linux??

Answer»

*censored* is 'the d-word'.

I am running DSL within WINDOWS XP and I want to access files on the Windows XP partition (or if that is impossible, then from an external USB device with an SD card). I have DSL on the HDD.

I just started using DSL tonight and am very inexperienced with Linux.

Thanks.DSL is ,very small.

When you say 'inside windiness' it makes me think you are using VM ware.Is that so?

You must 'mount' a partition to see its contents.
But you are inside of Windows using a VM?
Sorry, I don't remember how you get around using the VM.

Anyeay, with DSL, the only files you could read and edit would be TXT files. Binary files, or EXE files, don't work in Linux if they were  made for windows. Linux must have its own EXE and DLL and that stuff written just for the specific OS.

But you can boot DSL off of a USB stick and from three look at the partitions on the hard drive. There is little advantage of running DSL from your hard drive.

IMHO, using puppy linux is a step up from DLS. The DSL people are commuted to making is a small as can be, and that puts a limit on how many extras you can have.
But if DSL is what you like, go ahead and enjoy it. It is cool to see how MUCH you can do sill so little. Actually, this teaches on of the principles of Classic Cybernetics, namely,  "A complex system can be scaled down and STILL be  useful."
Quote from: ShadowVegan on February 28, 2012, 09:01:42 PM

*censored* is 'the d-word'.

Is it 1812 where you live?

What did you mean by "within Windows XP"? If you are using virtualization SOFTWARE such as VMWare you can have "shared folders" which are folders or drives on the host which are visible to the guest OS. As you have not said what virtualization software you are using it would be hard to be more helpful at this stage.

Applications running in Linux can work with much more than TXT files. Just about EVERY image, sound, video, document, and many script formats (perl, python, java etc) can be handled. With WINE many Windows programs can be run.

You can't just see the windows partition under Linux? Should be auto-mounted ...

Also, what's with the censor thing? Quote from: Raptor on February 29, 2012, 11:39:54 AM

Oh right DSL as in *censored* Small Linux. I thought DSL as in Digital Subscriber Line.1812? What? The 'd-word' is auto censored. And yes I am using Qemu. I agree that using a bigger OS is better but I am on a ski trip and left my computer home, I am using my dad's work computer with limited privileges so I can't install anything, and I want to watch .mov files taken with my helmet cam. I downloaded zip VLC but it is really laggy so I want to watch them in DSL.Can you boot from a live Linux distro?

Can you run an FTP server in DSL?  If so, you could use FTP at the command line on the host computer to send the files to the DSL filesystem. For the benefit of all, here are some useful links about -

With a small OS in your pocket, you can use a borrowed computer and have all your own stuff on the USB thumb drive. It does not require any hard drive space. And yes, it does read windows volumes.
And DSL has many brothers and sisters:

And if you can not say *censored*, just say Dämn

ä   <--I don't have any experience using Qemu. I do know VirtualBox allows you to specify partitions, prior to booting, that you want access to while in the OS. You can also include thumb drives and other peripherals to connect as well.

Solve : How to install Linux??

Answer»

How do I install Linux but without the launcher and to lock it down so the users cannot make changes? Any TIPS would be helpful. I have install Ubuntu but I need to lock it down.If you have a need to lock down any OS, you have to think about password protection of the BIOS. Otherwise a user can just use the BIOS to boot from a USB or CD and bypass the security of the OS. Check your BIOS documentation to see what options you have.

As for Ubuntu, password protection is part of the OS. There are some concerns addressed here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/security Quote

Thank you raptor.
Have not heard back from the OP. For the BENEFIT of all, it is all too easy to reset a BIOS password by removing the CMOOS battery. But that is a physical intrusion. You can make it hard by using screws with special heads on the chassis of you computer.BIOS protection does not protect the hard drive.  That can always be removed.  The only real option is encryption, if you're that concerned about security.  In my experience, all BIOS passwords do is lead to a false sense of security.

OP: what do you mean by "without the launcher"?I'd set modifiable permissions for everything to admin only. Heck, superuser only. But I think, depending on your version of Linux, it does that by default. Also, change the default root password to something only you (or the sys admin) knows. You don't WANT the guy booting into single user mode then running a couple of command line tricks to blow away the password...

Solve : Screen corruption upon boot Linux Ubuntu?

Answer»

I've got a copy of Linux Ubuntu 11.10 64bit installed on one of my machines (VIA chipset, AMD processor) and every time it boots, the screen starts acting as if though the videocard is defective.

I know that isn't the problem because it boots Windows just fine. It also starts working again I run the recovery console which lets me boot into Linux and use it like I normally would.

I've waited way too long with resolving this problem as I am rather clueless when it comes to these kinds of problems in Linux so I don't quite recall the changes I have made to the system but I do know most of them had very little impact:

  • Changed from Unity to Gnome 3
  • Messed AROUND with the start-up Daemons
  • Installed a Linux version of Hard Disk Sentinel[/i]
    • Hooked up a bunch of hard drives (SATA/PATA/USB)[/i]
I believe that's about all of the major changes I've made. This version of Linux is installed alongside Windows XP.
    Hardware is in order.

Any idea what could be causing this? How do I go about diagnosing the problem?
I have know idea. Do you have another video card for testing?
What I would try is to get another version of Ubuntu in 32 bit, boot it from the 'live' CD and  see how it goes.
Also, the Ubuntu people have a very dative chat room. If other people have had this kind of issue they might know about it.

This.

Try Ctrl-Alt-+ (numeric KEYPAD) to cycle through X Windows resolution modes.  Ctrl-Alt-F1 (/F2/F3/etc.) will get you to a console.  From there you can log into a shell for further diagnosis or to edit the X Windows config files. Quote

At first I get the desktop with the mouse arrow but without the taskbar. Then I move the mouse and the screen just garbles up into something that resembles a broken laptop videocard.

Quote

It has worked, it's not a compatibility issue. The videocard is just fine. It happens at a very specific instance and never beyond or before that.

Quote
Are you talking about choosing recovery mode from the grub menu? What do you do exactly?

Yes, that is the recovery menu I am speaking of.

Here's what I do:

  • Turn on computer; boot Linux; Linux corrupts/crashes
  • Do a warm reset
  • Choose recovery mode in GRUB
  • Tell it to scan for corrupt files
  • Tell it to look for updates (I believe this phase is not necessary as it doesn't find ANYTHING)
  • Tell it to do a clean boot

Voila, corruption REMOVED until the next reboot.

Weird, eh?

I just recall installing an application that monitors Daemons and caches files based on how often they're used thinking it would improve performance (Which is kind of shoddy on this machine Asus A8V/AMD Athlon 64 S939/512MB DDR 1/PATA 80GB|7200RPM).

I believe the corruption started before that, though. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on February 02, 2012, 06:40:15 AM

I just did a warm reboot and the problem occurred again on normal boot.

I have pressed CTRL + ALT + Numeric Plus (At the same time, right?) but this doesn do anything.

Switching to a console does work. However, I have no clue what to do from there.

Also, I am using a HP Ergo Ultra VGA 15" CRT monitor so perhaps it is indeed a refresh rate or resolution mismatch. Refresh rate, almost certainly.  Any other monitors available to you? Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on February 03, 2012, 05:35:43 AM
Refresh rate, almost certainly.  Any other monitors available to you?

But the monitor is not at fault, right? It runs just fine for hours at the time.
Unfortunately, all the other monitors I have are in use and too large to be fitted where the current one is standing.

I'll look into editing whatever files are related to the refresh rate and resolution under Linux. This is the way to go, yes?A CRT can give up the ghost like this after a while.  Start here re configuration. So I've been looking up a lot of information on how to adjust the screen resolution from within the terminal but I'm not having much luck.

When I use xrandr it tells me that no screen is available. When I use the GUI tool it calls the screen "unknown".

Any clues on where to start? I also get conflicting reports about what exactly constitutes the program used for displaying stuff in Ubuntu. I run into a lot of old posts and the suggestions there are outdated. A lot of things seem to change rapidly in Linux land. You're right - a lot does change.  Is reinstalling out of the question at this stage?  Ubuntu/Debian are pretty good at correctly detecting hardware upon first install.  Mind you, they might baulk at such a crusty old user monitor.  Well I guess I could reinstall but it is sort of a brute-force method and I know how to reinstall Ubuntu. I'd rather learn how to resolve this problem. I know the problem lies in Ubuntu not detecting the screen properly so from what I understand, all I need to do is change or add a text file that tells Ubuntu what resolution and refresh rate to use.

The odd thing is that using the recovery console does allow it to boot properly so I assume that just like in Windows, Ubuntu has an option to boot using a VGA-safe mode.

Oh well. I'll look into it again when I have some more time. Maybe ask on the Ubuntu boards. That's your best bet.  X is a complex beast and I've lost track with it's specific implementation in the LATEST distros.  It used to boil down to one engine/drive and a config file.  There's a bit more to it now.  Ubuntu boards (or Debian boards) are a good place to go for the full gen.Raptor, do

Solve : Best Free Bootloaders.?

Free MultiBoot Loaders
http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/multi-boot-managers.shtml

If you want to boot more than one operating system ("OS") on a single computer, a boot manager or multi-boot loader comes in handy. The boot loader allows you to easy create and configure a boot menu so that you can select which OS to boot,

GAG The Graphical Boot Manager
GAG boots up to 9 operating systems from either the primary or EXTENDED partitions. It installs itself into the boot track, has support for a timer to boot a default operating system, includes password-protection for the configuration menu as WELL as for individual operating systems, has a SafeBoot system where your hard disk is booted even if GAG is overwritten, and supports hard disks of up to 4 terabytes. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License.

GNU GRUB - Grand Unified Bootloader
This boot loader, used in some Linux distributions by default. It is distributed here in source form; you probably already have the binary version if you are running Linux. It is able to boot multiple operating systems, including Linux, Windows, MS-DOS, etc.

Smart Boot Manager
Smart Boot Manager is an OS independent boot manager that searches for drives and paritions, and automatically includes bootable partitions into its boot menu. It includes a SCHEDULER that allows you to boot a particular system at a preset time. It has the ability to boot from CD-ROMs, boot the default boot record after a delay if no keys are pressed within a specified time, place keystrokes into the operating system's key buffer prior to booting it, etc. It also supports the password-protecting of partitions, drive and the administrative screens.

XOSL (Extended Operating System Loader) Boot Manager
XOSL installs itself into a dedicated partition (which you have to create yourself). The initial installation has to be done from real mode MS-DOS (not a DOS prompt window running in Windows). Operating systems that it can boot INCLUDE MS-DOS, FreeDOS, Linux (with LILO), Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Solaris, BeOS, etc. You can password protect certain boot items, set a automatic boot timeout, install up to 24 operating systems, swap drives, etc.
Voe and comment please. I GUESS GRUB is the one everyone is most familiar with....I only know GRUB and boot.ini

Solve : Ubuntu Won't Accept Wireless Password?

Answer»

Please bare with me and be patient I'm somewhat new to Linux, I'm trying out various alternative OS's, so give it to me in laymen's terms.

Now down to the problem; I already have an existing installation of Windows XP and 7, these both connect to the wireless network no problem. But my newly installed Ubuntu 11.10 only connected once on first intall but now will not. It asks for the password, tries to connect FAILS and asks me for the password again. My first approach was human error (am I typing in the wrong password) but it is the right password. As soon as I find out what network card I am using I will try drivers from the manufacturer. In the mean time does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?
Quote

Please bare with me

Maybe if you buy me a few drinks ...

There's no such thing as a network "password"; are you sure you're not trying to type the network key in the password prompt that is meant to elevate your privileges?

Because that requires the password of your administrator account in Linux and not the network key... As the passwords are the same I'm pretty sure that it's not the case. That and I'm sure it's asking for the network password or key, or whatever else you want to call it.

I was meant to add that I IDIOT proofed the passwords. (Although the numberlock frequently gets the better of me)

At some point in time wireless ROUTERS are now doing a tough security instead of the older WEP type security.
Two runarounds:
Connect directly to a Ethernet cable.
Set the wireless router to no security.
(Using WEP is about the same as no security. Almost.)

More mere information on new security rules, consult the documentation and the web site of the rout3r manufacture.

I looked this up, the network card that I'm using is apparently on the definitely supported list. The manufacturer does provide drivers but I can't work out how to install them (something about having to compile the desired FILES? Helpful at any rate if you have little experience with Wi-Fi drivers and no idea about the layout of the Linux file system, unless I'm misinterpreting it). Also it's not limited to one piece of hardware.

Solve : FTP with TLS?

Answer»

I have a LINUX based VPS. And another linux shared hosting account. This shared linux hosting account SUPPORTS only FTP over TLS (Explicit). I am trying to build a shell script on my VPS that would use FTP over TLS to connect to my ftp server and pull a file from the server.

However I am not able to figure out how to connect to FTP over TLS. How do I do this? You need an ftp client that supports TLS.  lftp does.  Should be straightforward to install it on most flavours of Linux.  lftp can WORK scripted - you just need to SPECIFY the host like this: "ftps://user:[email protected]".  See the man page for more details.

Right now, I have it set to do two THINGS: At login, it runs xrandr to set up my multi-monitor display (set one monitor as "primary", then make the other one --right-of the first). Then, it disables power management to my wlan0 in order to solve an issue I'm having with my USB dongle (namely, Power Management chokes off power to my USB WiFI, which of course causes my Internet connection to slow down; DISABLING power management fixes this.)

All is well except for one little problem: My startup .sh file now requires my password in order to run the command which disables power management to my USB WiFi DEVICE. This is rather annoying and I'd like to be able to bypass it - for this command only. Solutions I've found online require me to make exceptions to the sudo password requirement rules, which would compromise my computer's security. For obvious reasons, I'd like to avoid this. Unfortunately, the command MUST be executed as su - attempting to run it without su privileges returns a Permission Denied error.

Is there a way to get just this one command, or possible file if necessary, to run a sudo command automatically?Added the command to /etc/rc.local. That took care of it.Thanks for sharing. That is a goo trick to know.  Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 29, 2012, 01:40:12 AM

Thanks for sharing. That is a goo trick to know.

It's as much a "trick" as adding a line to autoexec.bat was in the days of MS-DOS.

Solve : QjoyPad failing in every way?

Answer»

Hello to all.
I am trying to configure an old joystick setup i have (saitek X45's) To work as a gaming controller and as a mouse, if possible, durring regular computer use.

I am running Ubuntu 11.10, and have my updates up to date.
I have installed several other tools to aid in the QjoyPad installation, allthough i cant name them off the top of my head. But includes joystick repository and the build-essential repository.

I run the -tar -xzvf... ext, then change directories into the QjoyPad
from there, i run the ./config with the argument --prefix="home/%user%" due to worry that not having permission to write to the system disk is a problem

My basic ERROR is that it tells me Error 1, which i have no understanding of.
this is the full reply after running the "Make" Command

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5073040/how-to-find-x11-extensions-xtest-hThis is what i mean by failing in every way. I have already solved another error, somehow, and then the error 1 is there. Now it is still there, giving me the output of this:

Code: [Select]g++ -c -m64 -pipe -O2 -Wall -W -D_REENTRANT -DQT_WEBKIT -DDEVDIR="/dev/input" -DICON24="/home/jaredkat/share/pixmaps/qjoypad/icon24.png" -DICON64="/home/jaredkat/share/pixmaps/qjoypad/icon64.png" -DQT_NO_DEBUG -DQT_GUI_LIB -DQT_CORE_LIB -DQT_SHARED -I/usr/share/qt4/mkspecs/linux-g++-64 -I. -I/usr/include/qt4/QtCore -I/usr/include/qt4/QtGui -I/usr/include/qt4 -I. -Itrayicon -I. -o axis.o axis.cpp

axis.cpp:25:22: error: ‘split’ is not a member of ‘QStringList’
make: *** [axis.o] Error 1

Now what??  i did the sudo apt-get install libxtst-dev package and all. And if someone has an easyer way to get this done, that would be awesome, because most software PACKAGES for joysticks i find does not allow for using the joystick as a mouse itself, which is what i need for most of my games. Joysticks are absolute position devices. Like a puck. It can generate data constantly even while still.
A mouse is a relative movement device. It generates data when moved. Or a button is pressed.

Here is a general coverage of the pointing devises commonalty used.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pointing_device

Maybe it would be easier to use a different type of device. I would look into that if i had a budget of more than 10 bucks
I usually find STUFF that friends have or in a thrift store and find uses for them, and i happen to have the Saitek joystick

Since i could not get QjoyPad to work, i since tried rejoystick, and it works.... Somewhat.
The problem is that i am trying to adjust some of the buttons to do other functions, like i want button 6 to be right click, button 1 left click, axis 9 to be the w key, ext. and for some reason rejoystick maps out my axis's strangly compared to the jstest UTILITY.

Either way, i suppose that the question has changed to how to configure with rejoypad.

The documentation that came with the app is very limited. The official site for the app is the first google result pending searching rejoypad.

Nevermind about rejoypad. I am using qjoypad, only problem is that i canot access it the dialog box for mapping out the axis and buttons. Help??? Re-installing the whole operating system helped greatly. I am able to run QJoyPad, with only one bug

I can not access the configuration dialog from the taskbar icon, and have to run it with the argument of no taskbar.

Otherwise, it works perfectly.

Solve : Cannot uninstall package, cant install any others?

I have tried some mods to the spash screen, and the latest one i installed, it gives me this error when i try to remove it

It may have been that i did not save the .deb file, and did a run without saving, or it may not be.

I am unsure of how to remove it if it does stuff like this, also in the package manager that starts with s....
It just wont let me uninstall the package

Any help appreciated, thanksSorry, I can't help much.
I notice you are using the 64 bit version. Is you PC an Intel or AMD.  There are 64 bit versions for each.

Just a suggestion. Using GPart, or ANOTHER partition manager, make enough space for another install of Ubuntu using the 32 bit ISO . There is an alternative Ubuntu download that can double or triple your download for a new copy of Ubuntu. It uses a torrent, which is perfectly legal for Ubuntu.

Alternative downloads for Ubuntu
Quote

What you'll find there:
    Alternate installer details
    BitTorrent download
    The Windows based “Wubi” installer
    DVD downloads

My guess is you will not have the problem with the 32 bit version. But I am often wrong. Please come back. I NEED to know if I made a bad guess.
download the .deb file again, and place it in /var/cache/apt/archives

Or, you might also try putting it in /tmp and try to remove it since the package manager may have installed it directly from there when you installed it from the browser; but the /tmp file is cleared on boot.
It is 64 Intel.

I would also perfer not to do a re-install because of the fact i did just a short while again and just now have everything reconfigured and working (until this happened)

also, i do not know how to place the .deb file in the archives folder, as i believe it is marked under ownership of root, meaning that i am UNABLE to write to that pariicular area. And i have not been successfull in the copy command in terminal to transfer files into the "root owned" areas of the hard disk.

I appreciate the current help so far. Thanks

Solve : how to boot back into linux?

Answer»

Hi ,

I have linux mandriva installed in my PC , I tried to install WINDOWS XP , but had problems (BSODs) , now I want to boot BACK into mandriva , can you help me please do that ?

Thanks in advanceIt REALLY would help if you could give the version # of mandriva .
http://www.mandriva.com/en/
Many current versions of Linux have the option of booting the CD 'Live', that is to say, RUNNING only from the CD.

If so, you can do that  and look around and see if you can find whee mandriva was installed. But the XP install may have wiped it out altogether.

If you drive is big enough, like over 40 GB, you could install both systems on the drive. XP has to go first, but use only half of the drive.

You are certainly welcome on this forum. May I suggest your also try a chart room on any of the Linux FORMS. The Ubuntu community is very active non the chat.

Solve : Can I create a command with a system name?

Answer»

I'm relatively new to UNIX and am playing and experimenting. I would like to create a COMMAND in my home directory with the same name as a system command. For instance, I would like to create a ls  command.  I create a file named ls.  I edit it and put in one  echo  command.  I make the file executable, and I put my current directory and home directory as the first two in my PATH.  Yet when I issue the command:  ls I still get the system command.  Is there something else I need to do, or is it not POSSIBLE?
Thanks,
KenNo, don't do that. Use another name.
Try   lsx
Or maybe   kp

Why would you want to use a name that is already in use?
>> Why would you want to use a name that is already in use? <<

I'm strictly playing and experimenting. I guess I don't understand why, if I put my current directory as the first element in my PATH that it does not find my version of the ls command.  Nothing important for me just curiosity and learning.

Thanks,
~KenI'm a bit hazy on this, but if I recall correctly, ls is usually a shell internal command, so it's not actually SEARCHING your path.  Internal or built-in commands execute more quickly than external commands, so there's a slight PERFORMANCE advantage, compiling them into the shell.

If you want to change the effect of the ls command, use alias.  e.g.:

Code: [Select]alias ls="./ls"Using the alias command does not save the command for the next instance of terminal. Meaning you have to create a file in your /home/%username% directory. called .bash_aliases~ with the period in front of it and all

the contents should look like such

Code: [Select]alias ls="./ls"

I also added some costomizations to my own terminal, because this file seems to execute commands on the startup of terminal, therefore not making the alias command permanant, but configuring terminal to run it everytime at startup. So, upon my discovery of such, i put in some other commands in the file, like such

Code: [Select]echo Welcome to the Command Line on a computer of Jared Kat. Refer to the background for help
cal
uptime

alias minecraft="java -Xmx1024m -Xms1024m -jar /home/jaredkat/Downloads/minecraft.jar"

alias connect="ssh [email protected]"

You could play around with that a bit. Here is an item of interest.  The Ubuntu default shell was changed.
This is about why Ubuntu uses one shell and not another.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DashAsBinSh Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 26, 2012, 04:53:18 PM

Here is an item of interest.  The Ubuntu default shell was changed.
It's only used for scripts that specify a /bin/sh shebang, which is usually limited to scripts that start during the boot process.

Add to this the fact that that change happened 6 years ago...

Solve : Wine Installation Fails To Install Reason Ubuntu?

i am trying to install reason, the somewhat WELL known music production program, onto my ubuntu computer

The exact message i get is:
Ignition Key Driver Installation Failed
Could not install or update the drivers for the ignition key. PLEASE install old drivers and try again, or contact customer care

What is it that i need to do to get the installation to work?? All help appreciated. Have you checked the Wine compatibility database?I have looked around at a lot of that, however, i am unable to find a solutionWhat I mean is, has anybody previously got this application working under Linux?  What is the "Ignition key"?  Is it some kind of software protection dongle? It is not a dongle, but seems to be a small file in the installation that needs to be transfered over, but wont. I KNOW its not an error of authorization, because it is a valid copy and does not get to the registering of the application part.

Although i do find it strange that it needs a driver for a software file.... How about using a native Linux alternative program (stating the obvious, I know)...? Quote from: ROB Pomeroy on March 26, 2012, 06:10:22 AM

LMMS is pretty good, to provide a specific example.

Regarding Reason on Wine, it's current rating is "Garbage" for version 6.0. Apparently version 5.0 is rated as "gold", though.

The copy protection system used on this version doesn't works well with Wine. It has the option to use either online authorization or a USB hardware key for which it needs to install it's drivers. This driver installation fails and makes it impossible to start the application, even though it would have the option to be used in a free demo mode, which let's you try all functions of the software, it only limits the ability of loading project files and exporting your songs.

Solve : Modify bash_profile to set permissions automatically?

Answer»

Hey all -

Running FEDORA Core 11 here. I'm EDITING my .bash_profile so it will execute the following:

alias "chmodWeb"="chmod ugo-rwx *.* | chmod u+rwx *.* | chmod o+rx *.*"

Theoretically, this should take all files and folders within a given directory and change the permissions as follows:

u: rwx
g: ---
o: r-x

However, when I run this, it's.... strange. I have yet to get ANYTHING consistent from this. Sometimes it changes the permissions of one out of four files to rwx------, sometimes it changes all of them to ------r-x. Can someone HELP me figure out what is going on and how to fix it? If you've got another idea for quickly changing permissions to rwx---r-x via command line without installing additional software, I'm all ears. Well, eyes, in this case.

Why are you using the pipe symbol?  Did you mean ';' instead of '|'?

I want them to execute the commands with one command, not three. The whole idea is to simplify setting permissions for WEB pages.

The problem is it seems to want to execute all sessions at the same time, rather than in order. I tried using ';' instead of '|', and I got the same results. What is the difference, in theory, between ';' and '|'?Pipe takes the output of the command to the left of the pipe and sends it as input to the command to the right of the pipe.

I really don't think you want to execute these commands simultaneously.  If for example the first command happened to run a millisecond after the second and third commands, you'd just end up undoing the effects of the latter commands.  (Think about it.)

Anyway, as it happens, the Gnu version of chmod can do all this in one command, so how about this instead:
Code: [Select]alias chmodWeb="chmod g-rwx,u+rwx,o+rx *"
The ".*" is redundant in Linux/Unix.  You're thinking of Windows/DOS. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on March 22, 2012, 05:01:12 AM

This is my problem about this activities:

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Develop a utility that will enhance the current file management and
organization functions of Linux.

You may use existing file management COMMANDS to create the utility.
Look for options that were not explored by the command yet, then
enhance the command by reinventing its name and adding this option
to its current options.

You may combine related commands into one SCRIPT also.
Example:
copyormovefile (-c -m) filename/s
where:
copyormovefile is the name of the utility
(-c -m) are options that will do the FOLLOWING:
-c for copying filename/s
-m for moving filename/s

Thanks for helping me, how can i do these,? T_TSorry - we don't do homework for our users.  We're happy to give some POINTS though.  Is there any particular bit you're struggling with?WELL, the first thing I would do is pick a scripting language. But hey, that's just me.

Solve : My computer is doing outbound TCP-FIN scanning and I wish to make it stop?

Answer»

I  have a System76 Pangolin Performance (Panp8).  It has 4 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5-2410M CPU 2.30GHz × 4 processor. My hard drive has a total of 250 GB, but the partitioning makes it a little more complicated than that (which I'll explain more about a little later in this post); the OS I'm currently running has 102 GB of disk space. I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu, 12.04, but I was using 11.10 when this problem first started.

This is the beginning of the account, and at this time I was using Ubuntu 11.10. So last week, I believe it was Thursday or Friday, maybe Wednesday, I got kicked off the wireless network where I live. I called the admin, and he said it was because my computer was doing outbound TCP-FIN scans, which (according to him) means that I probably have a network virus. I'm skeptical, because I've heard that there are virtually zero viruses out there for Linux systems. He sent me an email with many links to free virus scans and "free" virus scans, all for Windows. I attempted some of these scans using Wine with varying (low to none) degrees of success. One of them told me that I have some Win32/Toolbar/Babylon applications on my computer, as well as some threats in the Firefox cache, and some other threats that I can't remember. However, I hadn't checked the box "remove found threats" when I first started running the scan (I didn't want it to accidentally remove something important), and at the end of the scan, there was no option to remove them. Thereafter, that particular scan didn't work anymore. I really wish I'd exported the list of threats to a text document. Ultimately, I wasn't able to remove ANYTHING from my system with any of the scans. I tried ClamAV and it turned up nothing, but I don't think it was working right, as it reported that it only scanned a megabyte. I'm going to uninstall it, reinstall it, and try again, and if I get a different result I will update this post. My network administrator is really not being so cool about it. He knows I use Linux, knows nothing about Linux, assumes it's a virus, sends me some links to Windows virus scans for Windows viruses, and just tells me I have to make my computer stop doing outbound TCP-FIN scans or else he's going to kick me off the network again. I'm not completely sure that I don't have a virus, but I get the feeling he is just heaping the burden of his ignorance upon me so that he doesn't have to learn anything about non-Windows systems for his job. Yes, I should know about my own computer, but I'm not the one getting paid to maintain the well-being of the network (which he generally does a terrible job of anyhow). Sorry, I'm venting a bit. Anyhow, I don't think my computer was doing it before last week, but I have called the admin to ask him when it started, and where the scans are being directed. I got his voicemail and have YET to hear back from him. I'll update this post when I do, unless it has already been solved by then.

Now, unfortunately, some events happened which potentially complicate this whole thing, but maybe not. I don't know. I'm going to describe them just in case they are relevant. On Saturday of that same week (or maybe it was Friday night? I forget), after the above paragraph happened, I attempted to upgrade to 12.04. When it was in the middle of upgrading, the program doing the update froze. When I finally gave up hope that the upgrade would finish, I closed the program that was doing the upgrade, sure enough it was "not responding" and I had to force the quit. Afterwards, clicking the mouse button had no effect on anything. I disconnected the power source and removed the battery to turn it off, and then when I turned it back on again, it wouldn't boot right, it just stayed on the purple "ubuntu" screen indefinitely, with those little dots changing from white to red-orange and back again. So, I ended up installing another copy of Ubuntu 12.04, alongside the old one. All my old files are within an encrypted directory, that I have not yet been able to access (but I'll post more about that with a different thread). I thought, maybe there's a little silver lining, maybe this'll somehow fix the TCP-FIN scanning issue. Nope. Admin called me yesterday and told me that my computer started doing it again, 2 and a half days after I installed the new copy of 12.04 and started using my computer again. Now, I had done some web surfing within that time, so if I did get some virus from some website (which I think is unlikely), it's possible I could have gotten the same virus again after starting with the new 12.04. But is it possible that, if I had a virus, it could still operate from within that encrypted private directory after booting a new OS? I don't know.

Anyhow, I just need to make my computer stop doing these outbound TCP-FIN scans, and I would also very much like to know why it is doing the scans in the first place. I will be very grateful to those who help.I don't know much about this kind of thing, but a quick Google suggests you should ask for router log files and check the destination IPs alleged to be scanned by your machine. A careful reading of the log should tell you if it really is your machine, and if so, you might get a CLUE from the ports being used and you could check the domain e.g. here

http://whois.domaintools.com/[put_ip_address_of_destination_here]

example http://whois.domaintools.com/74.125.132.106

A wireless router gives out local IP using DHCP.  So the local IP may change once in awhile.
But the router identifies each user by name and MAC.  If somebody was spoofing you, they would have to have your MAC.

A Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical network segment. MAC addresses are used for numerous network technologies and most IEEE 802 network technologies, including Ethernet.  ...
MAC addresses are most often assigned by the manufacturer of a network interface card (NIC) and are stored in its hardware, the card's read-only memory, or some other firmware mechanism. If assigned by the manufacturer, ...A network node may have multiple NICs and will then have one unique MAC address per NIC.
This confirms that MAC sis used on wireless networks. The administrator can block you by entering you MAC in a look-up table inside the routers memory area.

There are some videos . But it depends on how it was installed.
Do you recall which boot manage is in use?
Sorry, I didn't do it myself. I will google this and ask the person who installed it that question. You will need a Windows 7 DVD or a Windows 7 REPAIR disk.

To make a Windows 7 repair disk, in Windows 7 click start and TYPE create a system repair disc in the search BOX and press enter. Insert a blank CD and follow the prompts on the screen.

Once you've made your  disk you can delete Linux Mint. Click start and type diskmgmt.msc in the search box and press enter. This will open disk management. In disk management, look in the bottom pane. Your hard drive should be listed there as Disk 0. You should see all of the partitions on your disk there. Right click on the Linux Mint partition and delete it. It should show as unallocated space now.  If you want to go back to using that hard drive space for Windows 7, right click on your C: partition and choose EXTEND volume. Extend it into the free space.

Now insert your Windows 7 DVD or Windows 7 repair disk and restart the computer. The computer should start from the disk. Choose command prompt from the list of recovery options. At the command prompt type         bootrec /fixboot and press enter. Then type bootrec /fixmbr and press enter. Remove the disk and restart. Thank you very much for the information. I will try this.

Solve : Best distro of Fedora? Mint? UbuntU??

Answer»

Is that not a dumb question?

There are some many flavors taht you can't pick just one. Whit if you find 25 best versions? Are the all best at the same time?

The look and FELL varies. That is by design.
Change the question to 'What are a ome of nthe better Desktop Environments for Linux

But click here if you WANT The Most Poupalr Linux.

Bear in mind that the above links are now already dated. Really, even one of the distros made of a year ago can be the best for you if it meets your needs. Still, both links above are useful for anyone thinking of trying something else.

My question is: Why are some people switching to Fedora? What does it have?

"bleeding edge" = another way of saying "cutting edge" but also implying that you might get hurt using them (i.e. software that is barely out of beta).Fedora? Compatibility with "un chapeau rouge"    for one, and the fact that it uses .rpm while the the *buntu family uses .deb. Those are the biggest ones, I think.i know ubuntu WORKS with .rpm files, im not sure if its as streamlined as fedora or mint though

Solve : FlightGear Simulator on Multiple Monitors?

Ok.
From my reading, version 2.0.0 of Flightgear supports multiple windows for the same simulation, however, with my XML files, i can not get this to work.

this is in a file called "camera-vews.xml", which is referenced from the main "preferences.xml" file like so:

however, upon launch of any aircraft, this seems to only open one window. I am probably missing something really simple, but i am unable to find out what.

Solve : How to install Xubuntu using DSL??

Answer»

I'm on DSL darn small linux, I want to install Xubuntu instead but I only have DSL to do so. I don't have a CD burner but I have an SD card...but only an external SD card reader. I need very clear instructions on how to create a bootable SD card with Xubuntu using DSL. I can't even join the chat room because I can't figure out how to get Java to work on here or Flash. Can't afford windows. So any HELP would be APPRECIATED. Thanks! Here are some popular Linux distributions

Linux Mint 11
Ubuntu 11.04
Puppy

These can be put on a USB SD device easily.

As for Xubuntu, there was some information on
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-xubuntu-810-install-via-the-usb-creator/
This video requires a WORKING Windows or Linux system.I don't know is DSL will work . I never tried it. He mentions DSL in the
video and Puppy as well as Ubuntu.
Watch the video ANS come back here, if you wish.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25h3vl9jg3o
My own experience is that puppy is very easy to install to USB

But in you case, not having a CD burner  is a problem.

Read the information on pendrivelinux  and see if that works. Sorry, I am not able to do a step my step at this time.

Solve : Problem with filenames when copied to suse linux web server?

Answer»

Hi! I hope SOMEBODY out there can help me with these PROBLEMS:

EXTENSION names of image files automatically converted to uppercase when copied to suse linux server from USB drive.

This happens everytime I copy the file and its in random, I can't decipher the logic BEHIND automatic conversion of filename of some image files.

Is there any command in Linux that when files are being copied from USB drive it will retain the CASE of the letters, since most of these image files were being used in a website ubloaded in a web server running using suse linux. We don't have web min or c panel loading of files (web pages done in XAMPP in windows) in the web server is through copying from usb  to suse linux web server.

Thanks a lotHow sure are you that they were not uppercase as far as Windows was concerned?  And does it really matter?

Solve : bash script to join similar lines together?

Answer»

Hi,

I have been thinking of how to script this but i have no clue at all..
Could someone please HELP me out or give me some idea on this?

I WOULD like to GROUP those lines with the same first variable in each line, joining the 2nd variables with commas.
Let's say i have the following input.
Code: [Select]aa c1
aa c2
aa c3
cc d1
dd e1
dd e2
ee f1

I would like the output to be like this.
Code: [Select]aa c1,c2,c3
cc d1
dd e1,e2
ee f1

Could this be easily done with bash script?
Or should i TRY perl script then?
I'm a beginner in bash script and perl.

Thank you.
I've found a way to solve this.
${input} is the filename for the input file.

Code: [Select]for m in `CAT ${input} | awk '{print $1}' | sort | uniq `
do
        var=`grep "^${m} " ${output} | awk '{print $2}' | tr '\n' ',' | sed '$s/,$//'`
        echo "${m} ${var}"
done

Solve : Need to define a variable on conditions?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I have a script:

Code: [Select]FILE$i=`ls ~/Desktop/File_Converted/`
mkdir /tmp/$FILE
mv ~/Desktop/PIX_Converted/* /tmp/$FILE/$FILE
The I do some stuff to the file.  When I am done doing that stuff I delete the directory and the file.  This is fine as far as it goes, but the problem is that if another file is dropped into File_Converted directory before I am doing doing stuff to the file I am currently working with it will change the value of the $FILE variable before the script has completed which will mess up the stuff I am doing with the file.

What I'd like to do is use a variable set up where the variable is, say, $FILE1.  I check to see if $FILE1 is defined and, if not, use it.  If it is defined, then try $FILE2, etc...  In the end, when I am done, I want to RECLAIM the variable so $FILE1 get set back to null again and the next file dropped in can use it again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm new to this so I don't know where to begin.

Thanks!

Dan  How about using a loop instead of numbering the files?  Something like this:

Code: [Select]FCDIR=~/Desktop/File_Converted
for FILE in $FCDIR/*; do

    # Remove the FINAL slash and everything before it
    NAME="${FILE##*/}"

    mkdir "/tmp/$NAME"  ||  exit
    mv -v "$FILE" "/tmp/$NAME/"

    # Do processing ...
done
Note that I used quotes to allow for NAMES with SPACES, but if you're sure no filenames have spaces, you could leave them out.

Solve : Move file within volume without moving phisical file?

Answer»

Does anyone know if it is possible to MOVE a file WITHIN a VOLUME without having to move the physical file especially if it is very large.

In windows there are a set of API calls is there something similar?  If anyone knows a similar command to MOVEFILEWRITETHRU?

Thanks

Robmv and rename both do this, just like the windows/DOS "move" command. the win32 API MoveFile() and MoveFileEx() both change the directory location of a file but do not move the clusters of the file if the source and destination are on the same volume, just like if you use any of the standard library stdlib functions such as rename().

The MOVEFILE_WRITE_THROUGH flag for the Win32 MoveFileEx() only affects file moves between volumes which are handled as a copy followed by a delete, and MAKE sure that I/O is flushed to disk before the operation returns.

the STDIO C Function rename() can move files to new directories on the same volume.

Solve : Ubuntu Sound Having major glitch??

Answer»

ok, i have ubuntu 12.04 (which i am having several problems with, such as jack crashing after a while, and not being able to reconnect to jack server, system issues (the weird pop up saying ubuntu has ran into a critical error) and many others)

It all worked fine until now, however.

Jack works fine, just that the system audio CONTROL does not control the volume.

Secondly, alsa does not Emmet audio at all, and when playing any media in any sort of form (music in banshee, rhythmbox, audacious, audacity, LMMS, video on you tube, or otherwise) the media is fast-forwarded (aka, you tube videos that are 20 mins become like, 5, and music does the same thing)

This is really wierding me out, as this seems SCREWED UP BAD, but i am STILL being able to use it for stuff in jack.
The volume is a big issue however, because my mixer and speakers peak out because the volume is stuck at maximum.

This started when i was using the standard audio kernel, but i have upgraded to the ubuntu studio real time kernel, and this problem still exists.
THINKING about either re-installing ubuntu 11.10, or ubuntu studio 11.10 (did not like studio before, because i am used to the regular layout and like it better in plain ubuntu)Another thing i am wondering is if i should just use a copy of windows XP for my music work, as most good music programs are for windows/mac, like reason, traktor, FLStudio, and even LMMS seems to work better in windows, even though it claims to be LINUX Multimedia Studio This is a picture of the error, It is very generic

well, im going over to windows for my media production now. so this is not really needed, although if someone knows whats up with the generic error, then please do say
Anything in /var/log/messages?

Solve : Linux GPU Driver's - Any suggestions?

Answer»

Hello I am trying to play games on Linux thru Wine and I can get the games to run, BUT for the lack of correct GPU drivers I am getting poor quality. Even though these video CARDS are not top of the line I tried a GeForce 8400GS with 512MB DDR3 as well as a AMD ATI Radeon 5450 HD with 1GB of DDR3 and am getting poor frame RATES because the drivers are not tapping into the full capabilities of the video cards.

By comparison this same hardware a Pentium E5400 with 4GB DDR2 and these video cards running Windows 7 on a different hard drive gave me 30 fps on the GeForce 8400 GS and 60 fps on the ATI Radeon 5450 HD, on the same games between both Windows and Linux.

On Linux I am getting 6 fps with the GeForce card and 10 fps on the ATI Radeon card.

Hunting google I saw lots of people in the same boat, but not much information out there for drivers to use etc. Lots of people suggested using ATI instead of Nvidia because Nvidia has no Linux drivers available. I tried the Linux driver that ATI had available and under Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon 64-bit it  didnt change anything, then tried Mint 13 32-bit and still same results. Should I be trying a different build such as Ubuntu etc or is there a better driver available for either Nvidia or ATI that is out there that I have not found YET?

Long time ago I wrapped a DOS network driver to work under Linux... do I need to wrap a windows GPU driver for Linux and if so, what tool to use to accomplish this?

I know that I probably should just stick with Windows when it COMES to gaming, but it would be really neat if I could get this to work correctly. You cannot wrap GPU drivers.

I would suspect you aren't getting any OpenGL support from the drivers, in which case (unlike windows) Linux defaults to MESA, which is software emulation.

Unless you are running DX games, in which case it's probably the software layer. Quote

Lots of people suggested using ATI instead of Nvidia because Nvidia has no Linux drivers available.

That's nonsense. I have an nvidia video card and am using the proprietary video driver.

The easy way to install drivers in Linux Mint:

Click Menu > Control Center > Hardware > Additional Drivers. It will search for available drivers and give you options to install or activate them.

Or if you want to go to Nvidia's website to download the driver for your GeForce 8400 GS, you can get it there too.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-ia32-295.59-driver.html
or
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/44867

Those are the 32 bit drivers. If you have a 64 bit OS get

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-295.59-driver.html
or
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/44868

It's BEST to just install them from the control center.

Solve : Can I use Virtual machine to access a physical drive??

Answer»

Hello, all! I am here with a confusing question. Hope you guys can help.

Specs
Dual boot Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit / Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit (each is installed on a separate physical hard drive)
Video card       ATI Radeon HD 7750
Processor        AMD Phenom 2 quad core
Ram                 16 gigs
Motherboard   MSI 870A-G54
Power supply  Corsair GS 600

The drive with Windows (call it Drive A) is a physically separate drive from the Ubuntu drive (call it Drive 2).

What I am hoping to do, is boot into Ubuntu (drive 2) and use a Virtual MACHINE program to run the windows installation in Drive A. I want any and all changes I make in the virtual machine to be saved to Drive A.

The reason for this is I am tired of having a VM and a windows drive with separate systems, and I hate rebooting every time I need to run a program from the other drive. I did some looking and found some PEOPLE saying maybe I could make an image of the drive and install that image on the VM. Could I then save all the VM data on Drive A(the current Widnows drive)?

Is any of this even possible? Probable?

Thanks for any help! Quote from: Mayuukosan on July 14, 2012, 05:06:45 PM

You can't do exactly what you are asking; but you can virtualise a Windows partition (make a VM that is a copy) and then run that in VMWare Player under Linux. There is a free tool called VMWare Converter. I used it to make a VM of the XP install on my old Shuttle and I have it on my new one and I run it under Windows 7 and also Linux Mint 9.

http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

You can also modify such a VMWare VM to run under Sun Virtualbox.

I'm not familiar with virtual machine [VM]
you could do a reasonable imitation of what you wish on VirtualBox {VB}
you can save all the files wherever you want

you can save what is described as an "appliance"  [snapshot] so your xp install is sustainable
as long as you have a reasonably current version of VB
https://www.virtualbox.org/
on whatever linux host you like [your mileage may vary]

if nothing else Appliances speed up installing windows on vb

You can ALWAYS share the host systems content with the guest, which reduces the size of the file [xp] to 10-20g [os & programs only]
in day to day use saving to state reduces start up time to 15-20 sec on my xp install
I don't use XP very often, after sometime using linux, you'll FIND workarounds for all the apps you feel are windows only

I have tried using both VMWare and Virtual Box, but it seems I can not load an OS that is installed on a physical hard drive, which is what I wanted.

Also, I run Windows 7, not XP, but thank you for the advice.

The programs I use really are Windows only, for example, Steam, a game called Vindictus, and schoolwork for my college must be turned in with a .doc or .docx file type, which is Microsoft Word extensions. Quote from: Mayuukosan on August 04, 2012, 03:10:24 AM

This is correct. You cannot do this. Virtualization environments run virtual machines.

Mayuukosan, just fyi, OpenOffice and LibreOffice can both save and read files with those extensions. Documents created in OpenOffice or LibreOffice that are saved with those extensions can be opened and read with Microsoft Word. Ubuntu should have one or the other of those programs.

I'm not so sure about that.

I've just been running kvm on Fedora and virt-manager gives me the option to specify a raw device as the Virtual IDE drive, so theoretically you could select your physical Windows partition. Sorry I was forgetting that Windows was so fussy about the hardware changing.

Plan B -
Create a C: partition with just Windows OS on it for the bare-metal version of Windows
Create a D: partition with all the user account stuff
Create a virtual drive with just Windows OS on it for the virtual Windows
Setup the virtual system to use the virtual C: drive and share the physical D: drive with the other copy of Windows
Wow I am glad the conversation is continuing. I am surprised to see all the other information here. Just some more questions, as I am still a bit unclear...

The hardware would be the same, as it is the same machine. Why would it protest that the hardware is different? I have used a disc image of my Windows drive in VMWare and Virtual box with no warnings of this kind.

I have only SATA drives, does this matter? (Probably a stupid question but I have to ask.) I can not find an option for selecting a physical drive in either VMWare or VirtualBox. Only Disc Images. Am I not seeing the option anywhere?

Would this mean that the Virtual Machine and the booted Windows would keep the same settings and files? The changes on one would apply to the other? What I want is the Windows in my Virtual Machine on Ubuntu to be the same Windows that I can boot to. Same settings, same files, and if I download/change something it is the same for both. If that is what you mean, then TOTALLY YES THANK YOU. But I have the same issue as before: I can not find an option to load an OS from a drive in VMWare or VirtualBox. I am totally open to using other software if it will do what I want. I can save my Virtual Windows to my Windows drive, but it does not change any settings/files on my Windows drive.

A few more questions: Since so many people say it is not an option to load an OS from another drive to use on a Virtual Machine, why is this so? Is there a difference for an OS running alone vs. virtually that would make it impossible to link them? What I mean is, is it a limitation of the virtualization software or the OS?

Is there something wrong with using a Virtual Machine to run a drive with an OS? I am asking because if what I am doing is against the rules somehow, I want to know.

Thank you for all your help, I am new to Virtual machines, so I thought this was common practice, I am surprised to see it is not. Quote from: Mayuukosan on August 06, 2012, 06:01:23 PM

A virtual machine runs on virtual hardware. That's why it's called a "virtual machine". It seems I have to labour this point. Anyhow, even if you could do it, you'd be in breach of the Windows license.

None of these devices are present on the host machine.

Thank you, I did not know this. I thought that it would run off of the hardware that was present. Not sure why the virtual hardware could not match the physical hardware but I will try to do some research. I also did not know it would be a license breach, thank you for letting me know.

I thought that the "virtual machine" was referring only to the software not the hardware. I understand now why I can not run my Windows drive in a virtual machine inside Ubuntu, I think. Thank you, to everyone, for your help.

Solve : I've to do Root partition in Ubuntu?

Answer»

I've to do root partition in ubuntu 10.10, in my system whole 500 gp is DEDICATED to ubuntu, how can i RESIZE this partitionBurn yourself a Parted Magic boot CD and use GParted (dsiplayed as a "Partition MANAGER" ICON) to resize and create new partitions as needed.

http://partedmagic.comRob is correct. A Parted Magic boot CD will work.  Also a live CD or DVD like Linux Mint will work. They both have gparted.
But why do you want a / partition?  Why not just use the whole disk? Or you could make 4 partitions and have 4 DIFFERENT operation systems.  But you still would not need a root partition.
Whatever partition magic you need, you can do it with gparted.

Solve : Stupid Question of mine?

Answer»

how can i access files on my pendrive when i plug it into the usb port of a server running ubuntu server 12.04 lts?
I have no comment on whether or not the question is stupid, but in the future please GIVE your threads a subject related to the question. Thank you.I don't know exactly how ubuntu server is different from ubuntu desktop, but a mounted storage device should SHOW up on the desktop (or whatever server USES to list storage). If it's not mounted, you'll have to, well, mount it. I've never actually had to mount a drive manually before, so I have no idea exactly how to do that. On a related not, what FILE system is the thumb drive? You have to mount it manually. In general, assuming it's the only USB storage device you would mount it this way (comments preceded with #)

#Make a directory to mount it
mkdir /tmp/flashdrive
#Mount drive
mount /dev/sdb1 /tmp/flashdrive

If that COMPLETES with no errors, then it's mounted to /tmp/flashdrive and you can see the files there. If you're not comfortable with the command-line, you'll need to install a GUI with a file manager. For servers, you want to keep it light so I'd suggest fluxbox w/ thunar. That's exactly what I was thinking of
Note that depending on your exact configuration (particularly how many drives, partitions, etc. you have on your server), it may not necessarily be sdb1 but (for example) sde1. There should be a command to list devices (similar to the windows diskpart).
True, mounting can be tricky if you don't have a device list. There's some good discussion of this problem over at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB

Try running the command Code: [Select]sudo fdisk -l which will tell you which device to mount.

Solve : What Distro, and a Whole Bunch of Newbie Questions?

Answer»

TL;DR at the bottom.

I've used Linux on and off for ~2 years now and want to get the most out of it.

Firstly, I would like to know if anyone here has a good distribution for a Dell Inspiron Mini 10.1v, as listed in my specs.  I'd like to dual boot so preferably an OS with an installation that can SET up GRUB to do this automatically, as I use XP right now and want to be able to carry on using it.  I put Ubuntu on it before, but it ran quite slowly (and videos on things like YouTube ran awfully, XP runs that all fine).  If Ubuntu has ways of dealing with less-endowed set-ups that would appreciate the simple right to YouTube videos, then that would be great because I'm familiar with Ubuntu and as far as I can tell it's a good distro.  When I turned off desktop effects, the desktop ran reasonably well.  I'm still concerned, however, that Ubuntu as it is now isn't ideal for a 1GB RAM system...

Secondly, I am comfortable with Win32, etc..  I know how to develop slightly useful programs in Windows with C++; a language I know quite well now.  As you could imagine, I'm finding it hard to love Linux development considering what I'm used to.  Actually, I haven't the faintest idea how to develop for Linux in C++; any links would be great for that because I understand Linux software has a great set of communities and would rather get involved with that (and learn more about Linux, too) than get too involved with Windows.  As for my difficulty in transferring, it's not that I FEEL Linux development is in any way inferior, I just prefer Visual Studio to Code::Blocks (so if there's an alternative that most Linux developers use I would like to hear about it) and it's hard searching for help in programming for a Linux API, if such a thing exists.

I've also had trouble installing before (yes I know, the list of my issues with an OS I should've learnt better in 2 years carries on) and I really don't know much about:
* How Linux works underneath (or if there is a huge number of differences between distros, then how Ubuntu at the very least operates).
* How applications are installed and where their binaries are kept.
* How and where user data is kept.
* How desktops are managed (attempted and failed to move over to Awesome after it was recommended).
* How to get a command working in the terminal (in Windows, you would put the executable in System32 or maybe do something less dangerous and more intelligent to get the Command Prompt to recognise the name).
And just general OS tasks, like installing programs (I'm given .tar.gz2's instead of installers and I have no idea how to use them, and there is a lot of talk about packages, repositories and libraries that's going over my head), and anything else that could be useful, since I basically know nothing.

I'd like to add that I may come across frustrated, but I have been nothing but impressed by Linux while I've been using it so far.  Out of ignorance I expected laggy, poorly maintained software and incredible complexity, and actually the performance is more than decent, software is amazingly maintained, and it's not quite as complicated as I expected (but still hard, as any new set of OSs would be).

Many thanks are in ORDER to anybody who would help me with any of these problems!

TL;DR:
* Can I get Ubuntu to run well on my netbook listed in my specs, or is there a more suitable distro for 1GB RAM and a video accelerator?
* How do I get started with development on Linux using C++?
* Would like to know basics++ of managing Linux.
* Also how to manage desktops.
* And how installation works.
* Also how to get the terminal to automatically use certain binaries when entering the appropriate name.BUMPOh, and I just installed Ubuntu on my netbook in the end, is running alright and I don't mind putting up with a little laggyness. In case you are still looking, I use Mint 13 "Cinnamon" on my Toshiba Netbook with dual-core Atom CPU dual boot with XP Home and 1GB Ram and it runs well. I also have a 90GB OCZ Agility SSD in it to make it snappy in regards to boots and application launches. Quote from: Veltas on September 08, 2012, 02:09:11 PM

If you're concerned about performance, install Xubuntu instead, which uses a more lightweight window manager (used to be Fluxbox, I think - not sure what they're using now - possibly Enlightenment or one of the other low resource WMs).

If you're really REALLY concerned about resource problems, use VectorLinux or to be extreme, *censored* Small Linux.

By installation I actually mean program installation, not OS installation.  I may not have made that clear enough in my TL;DR.

On Windows, for example, I know that programs are installed to directories with their company name in the Program Files / Program Files (x86) folders and user data goes to the APPDATA folder, etc..  On Ubuntu I don't really know where programs get installed to in a typical installation, but I know it's something to do with a 'Debian' package manager or thereabouts.  I think user data gets installed in the folder with your username as its name in files that start with a period mark and then have the name of the program they're storing data for, but for all I know they do something else.  For example:
.firefox

As for all the other links, thanks!  They all look very helpful and I'll be sure to get started developing if I get some free time.On Linux and Unix, programs are generally installed into a bin or sbin directory. These are usually located at the file system root / and the /usr directory. Programs have many choices of where to store data or preferences, but ~/.appname is a common choice. Also sometimes used are the usr, share, lib, and var folders located in various locations throughout the disk.

Solve : free portable compilers for linux?

Answer»

I NEED a C COMPILER for linux.
Before answering first off KNOW this:
1. by free, I mean free as in price. Most software for linux is F/OSS so I don't have to worry about that here.
2. by portable, I mean portable as in the compiler can be execute as a binary off of a USB/SD

Portableapps.com has a TIGHTER definition on this. However, in my case any that meet 1 and 2 should do.
Thanks
Just wanted to ADD on that it will be used on a i386 OS.

Solve : Creating a Private Cloud based off of Ubuntu MAAS: Feasable or Not?

Answer»

Okay, so i have a small cluster of older servers, a total of 20, including HP and DELL. I have a daemon running on each server, and have the programs sharing information through a MySQL Server.

And i hear all the hype about "Cloud" from the public AMAZON to private clouds.

My questions:
Is a cloud infrastructure feasible using the Ubuntu MAAS installation?
Can i easily transfer all my current running programs? (That are just running under regular instances of Ubuntu Server)

I question if i really need to visualize everything. But also, i am not quite aware of all the uses of visualization are anyway.

If this is feasible, i may try a small server on a little 2 node HP CL380. My only problem is doing this without disrupting the DHCP stuff that is already implemented around my network.

Is this worth my time to look into and transfer everything to the cloud? let me know, thanks.

(PS, if this belongs in another section, then i am sorry, i posted here because i intend to run a all-ubuntu thing)There are many pros and cons to using a cloud such as Amazon's Public Clouds.

We ended up not going with it for many reasons, but 2 primary reasons was our ISP wasnt the greatest for 100% uptime and local power outages would drop the internet about 60% of the time, meanwhile headquarters of the small food store chain was able to stay running off large UPS's and generator.

We were looking into this to save a lot of money in not having to buy new servers to replace our Compaq Proliant Pentium III servers which were beyond their average life expectancy and were ready to die at any time.

I tested Amazon cloud using MS Server, but haven't tested Linux Server OS. Also a short while after testing there was the news about Amazon's cloud bringing down businesses when if my memory is correct a power grid failed and part of their cloud went down.

Since then I ended up leasing a couple servers through HP which can do the work of about 5 Pentium III's each running Dual Xeons. Less electricity needed and the lease with HP gave us hardware support if anything failed with 24 hr on site service and replacement of failed hardware. The company could not justify buying the hardware outright and the monthly lease payments to HP were very affordable as well as came with extra benefits that are not included when buying hardware outright.
I am curious, though, what exactly would be the advantages of a MAAS system VS a Visualization type cloud, and of course, VS the old way of individual OS on each system.

I would like an easy way to manage the applications on the systems from the WEB interface provided by MAAS, but i have no idea about the webpanel's quality and functionality, because my VirtualBox wont visualize the 12.04 RELEASES for some reason. (says i don't have "pae").

Either way, this is not a huge data center operation, this is more the size of a small cluster, only a couple racks at most. so renting/leasing servers is not within our prospect. We choose ubuntu because of the Open Source, and because of it's ease of use (at least for our applications).

The only other thing is that the cluster is part of a larger network, and because MAAS tries to run it's own DHCP, i dont want to run it on the network quite yet. I believe i will just pull a gateway from a parts bin and create a LAN for some experimentation with a MAAS head and node only.

From my understanding, MAAS has been bashed quite a bit for being "Different" from the regular three cloud types. but i am not quite sure if cloud even is a good idea for our applications.

Thanks. Another option, how i see it, is to use OPENSTACK.

After looking at the page, i read that it needs at least one box with 4 Cores and 8 gigs of ram. I currently have only one system that barely meets those terms. are these actually requited?

I am seeing uses to creating a cloud instead of using individual installations.

I will **try** to virtual machine it on my personal computer and see how it all works. I do already have an account with TryStack.org as well, but i would like to see how this would run, and how to set it up.

My only questions with OpenStack, is: How is the OS handled? I believe this is virtualization, but what would i need to install to make virtualization possible, or rather, what would i install on the nodes?

I am new to the cloud world, but i am not new to running server OS. Please do feel free to guide me through the starting points of cloud.

Solve : Ubuntu 12.04 LTS SSH Authentication Problem?

Answer»

Okay, so in my network, we have a webserver.

Today, I wanted to get on and refresh the content on a few pages.

Well, all is fine and good untill i TRY to "Connect to Server" from my Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop distro's file manager.

The popup appears

Server Details
     Server: 192.168.1.110
     Port: 22
     Type: SSH
etc etc

Either way, i type my credentials, but then i get an error, either "PLEASE verify your user details" or "Access Denied"

These are the correct credentials, because i am able to use them to log in to the actual machine after restarts, etc.

But through ssh, my credentials seem to be false

is there a command i need to use to change the SSH password for the user, or is there a glitch on not retrieving the password from the shadow file?

Speedy help would be appreciated, as this is a PROBLEM with a server that is public and live.

THANKS. Also, more information

The server also does not let any other users on through ssh, but will let them on the physical machine.

Effected accounts such as
root
administrator
webserver1

etcSounds like your ssh installation is borked.  Try "apt-get remove --purge openssh-server" then reinstall.  It might be that ssh is trying to use some authentication method other than Unix passwd files (LDAP, AD, etc.).Actually, after some research, it was a configuration file (i can not remember which one at the moment) that i had set up wrong a while ago, to restrict all accounts by mistake. After quite a bit of the "cd" and "vi" commands, i found the problem.

Solve : Linux (Ubuntu Server 12.04LTS) Security.?

Answer»

Hey, hey, i know, close unused ports, use good passwords, dont mess with "live" servers. But my question is, how to put a patch over security holes that are in the programs, securing the web server, etc.

I ask this because from looking around, i hear a lot that linux is the optimal OS type to hack, and because of security holes in the software, etc.

I know that often enough, security of modern linux and other 'nix distros has become LESS and less of a concern, but i want to cover all my bases.

Through my browsing online, I found the NSA SNaC "60 Minute Network Defense" handbook. I read through this a few times, but it did not give me anything other than password security, closing ports, and logging.

Does anyone know of any handbooks that are specific to the Ubuntu Server OS, or any Debain based server OS?

My network is primarily comprised of servers, running Ubuntu. There are a few windows workstations and a couple other linux desktop distros attached to the network.

Any *free* Network ADMINISTRATION newsletters and the otherwise would be helpful. thanks.

Hey, hey, i know, close unused ports, use good passwords, dont mess with "live" servers. But my question is, how to put a patch over security holes that are in the programs, securing the web server, etc.

Security is all about reducing your attack surface.  As you say, firewall-level security needs to be part of your overall security strategy.  Some web application firewalls include web query inspection and can provide some measure of security against known attack methods.  But I'm guessing you're not using a sophisticated web reverse proxy here.  So you need to think about things like:
  • Security by design - i.e. ensuring applications are developed using the best programming security practices
  • For PHP applications, use Suhosin: http://www.hardened-php.net/suhosin/
  • For PHP, set up php.ini securely: http://www.madirish.net/?article=229
  • Review application code for SQL/URL injection flaws (i.e. never trust user input - always sanitise; Google "sanitize user input" for lots on this)

I follow the H Online, for lots of useful security tidbits.  I also subscribe to a couple of black hat RSS feeds, but for obvious reasons, please don't ask me for details of those.

http://www.h-online.com/The nice thing about my network, is that it is a small network, that i have complete control over. Its somewhat the realm of a "Home Data Center" meaning i can do what I need to.

Is there any use to using Backtrack to find security holes in my own network?

And are there any major networking considerations (arranging of IP addresses, etc) that i should make?

Thanks. Quote from: zeroburn on October 30, 2012, 09:49:33 PM

That's a bit like asking, "How should I ARRANGE my tool shed?"  It all depends on your precise requirements and there are many many possible permutations.

Solve : openssl encryption?

Answer»

I received a PUBLIC key from a vendor.  What commands must I ISSUE to use the public key for encrypting the file using openssl?
Not my choice that I must use openssl...

# openssl smime -encrypt -binary -des3 -outform DER -in file.txt -out file.ssl Vendor_Pub.key
unable to LOAD certificate
9765066:error:0906D06C:PEM routines:PEM_read_bio:no start line:pem_lib.c:650:EXPECTING: TRUSTED CERTIFICATE

I guess I am missing something....It expects your certificate to be in .der instead of .pem format, you would use openssl rsa -in Vendor_Pub.key -inform PEM -out output.key -outform DER and then try encrypting again with the outputted key.
