Solve : Unwanted TCP FIN scans of Unknown Cause?

Answer»

I have a System76 Pangolin Performance (Panp8), and I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, 64-bit.

My computer has apparently been the target of incoming TCP-FIN scans, and also did at least one outbound scan. My network administrator banned my computer from the wifi network because of it. He says my computer's the only one on the network exhibiting the behavior. I really want to figure out the cause, but I have a huge amount of homework right now, and at this very moment the most important thing is for me to just PREVENT it from happening because I need the internet to do my homework. I have Uncomplicated Firewall, but I don't really know how it works; is there a way that I can use it to block or prevent such scans? Is there something I can do with my system or network settings to make it stop? I will be extremely grateful for any help!

Now, if you know a way I can just make the scans stop regardless of their cause, then please feel free to answer without BOTHERING to read the rest of this post. But maybe more details are necessary, so here is the firewall log report the admin sent me:

The right-hand column (Google, Meebo, etc) was added by me after I did a bunch of lookups on whois.domaintools.com. I am so confused. Why in the world am I being TCP FIN scanned from IPs owned by Google and Amazon and Meebo and various media companies? At the time it happened, I do actually think I was on a website where I was logged into Meebo and the chat bar was open; could these actually be "legitimate" harmless scans performed as part of Meebo's chat service? Another thing I noticed was that all of the scans came from a port 80, and when my computer did an outbound scan, the scan was sent to a port 80. This makes me wonder if it's just being done by one person who is spoofing various IPs, because what are the chances all those different computers would be using the same port to scan me/get scanned by me? Or, could someone be spoofing my IP and MAC addresses on the network, and if so how could I find out?

Also, I would like to know, is there a log on my computer that I can check which will tell of any such scans that have recently occurred?

I ran chkrootkit and rkhunter, and neither detected any rootkits, but chkrootkit said:
The following suspicious files and directories were found:
/usr/lib/jvm/.java-1.6.0-openjdk.jinfo /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.7/.path /usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/[email protected]/chrome/.mkdir.done

And rkhunter gave "warnings" for the following:
/usr/bin/mail
/usr/bin/bsd-mailx

Rkhunter also said that "Checking if syslog remote logging is allowed" was "Not Allowed". I have no idea whether any of this is relevant to my problem. Yes, go ahead and laugh at my ignorance.

I had a similar problem with TCP FIN scans back in May, and I started a thread about it back then. I never FIGURED out what was causing it, but it eventually got resolved in that it stopped happening after my computer got messed up and I had to install a new copy of Ubuntu (and chose to "downgrade" to 11.04). However, I figured this warranted a new thread because the problem went away for so long, I'm using an entirely different version and copy of the operating system, and now I'm getting incoming scans whereas before my computer was just doing outbound ones. You asked a very similar question to this on the Ubuntu forums on 5 May 2012.

Do you use a Cloud service (data backups? cloud music player for android or the computer)? Maybe you've got a KINDLE that you've synced on this computer? Are you using Windows apps under Wine and/or a VM?

Yes. I never really figured it out but it stopped happening, but now I'm having a similar problem. Also, I included a lot of useless information in that question that made it a real pain to read (you may notice nobody on Ubuntu forums offered answers), and now I have asked it in a much more sensible and coherent fashion. However, the problem now is a bit different in that now my computer is also apparently doing outbound scans.

A couple weeks ago, I used thinkfree.com and Microsoft Skydrive to make some edits to a .odt file that I needed to put into .doc format, because some of the formatting wouldn't save in .doc format when I used LibreOffice Writer. But I haven't used them at all since then, and these scans happened just yesterday. I have Wine installed and I have used it for a few Windows programs in the past, but I haven't recently. I don't have a Kindle and I'm not using a virtual machine. It just occurred to me that perhaps I should have put this thread in the "networking" category. Is there a way for me to move it?We shouldn't rule out that it could be the software on the computer. And for all we know, this should go under malware, and it is an interesting problem.

I wish i knew more into this aspect, but i would not know why someone spoofing an IP address would only target you, and not a range of IP's on the network.

Well, that's just my bad 2 cents.

Solve : puppy on hidden wireless network and Windows domain?

Answer»

I am trying to give new life to laptops and Puppy 5.2 seems to work just great with the Latitude D600's I have. I am still testing using the live CD, but I can not get the system to connect to the wireless network in the school. The wireless card is there and visible, I put in the school's ssid and wep code, the interface shows as active, but there is no data sent or received and browsers will not connect to any sites.

Should I just bite the BULLET and install?

Also, is there an easy way to connect to the Windows domain for printing and documents?

Thanks,I'd install if the hard drive doesn't have important info on it. Otherwise with a Live install you always have to reconfigure as for settings are WIPED out after shutdown. Depending on the wireless card you are using some are OK with Linux and others has issues.

What NIC are you using for Wireless? And is it connected thru PCMCIA slot or USB 1.1 port?

Well, these are old and have not been used in about a year or so. Installing may just do the trick. The wireless card is installed, not usb or pcmcia. It shows up as b43legacy. If built in cards don't work for this sort of thing, then these are headed for the recyclers as there is no budget to purchase wireless cards for them.

Thanks for the answer,
wifi cards are cheap these days. Even with no budget you can have wifi for about $20 probably with

Support Operating System Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Win7, Linux, MACGuess you have not worked at a NYC public school. Last year we had to have the principal order paper on her personal credit card because of the budget cuts. Also, having a card sticking out of the side of the laptop is just begging kids to pull it out. I typed in, lspci -nn | grep -i 14e4, that I got from another site and it comes up as a Broadcom Corp bcm4306 802.11b/g wireless lan controller. I am trying System>Administration>additional drivers and it looks like something is downloading, but the download window has not moved in about 10 minutes.

I will let you know how it goes, going to let it run and come back later.

Thanks,No love for the puppy.

The download timed out and failed, and I think that I will be trying another version, this just seems to be too much of a headache.

Thanks for the replies,
Fedora for me has been really good with wifi success. I have a Thumb drive with it as a bootable device and its worked on about 14 different laptops ranging in age from 2005 MODEL to modern with different chipsets for wifi. Thanks for the heads-up, I will check that out when I get back on Monday.

Solve : Solaris CSWimap not using SSL on port 993 when using IPv6?

Answer»

Hi,

I've just got a free IPv6 tunnel from Hurricane Electric and a Mikrotik RB to do all the firewall and tunnelling for my network, and I've been going round my systems converting them to IPv6. Finding out that Solaris containers need their own link local devices to be ABLE to use neighbour discovery was interesting. Configuring hairpin NAT on the router was another interesting one. Adding IPv6 support to sendmail was easy enough. Now I'm stuck on imaps and pops ...

I editted /etc/services to include imaps and pops ages ago when I setup IPv4, so this time all I did was change tcp to tcp6 in the inetd.conf and ran
Code: [Select]# inetconv -fthis built a whole load of new FMRI services for IPv6 as follows
Code: [Select]online 22:05:23 svc:/network/imap/tcp6:default
online 22:05:39 svc:/network/pop3/tcp6:default
online 22:05:50 svc:/network/pop3s/tcp6:default
online 22:05:59 svc:/network/imaps/tcp6:default
When I telnet to the ports 110,143,993 and 995 I find that using the IPv4 address you get the expected pop and imap prompts and 993 995 dont give any prompt as you'd expect from an encryted port.

However, when I telnet to the same ports using the IPv6 address I get unencrypted pop and imap prompts on all 4 ports. Has anyone any clue what to do from here?

BTW, as a wild stab in the dark I also tried adding lines with tcp6 in /etc/services but that makes no difference.

Finally, for detail I'm using
Solaris 10 HW 3/05 for SPARC on an Ultra-5 and the pop and imap service is provided by the CSWimap package, and its all running in a Solaris zone (aka container)
Code: [Select]# pkginfo -l CSWimap

Thx,
Banjo.
I eventually found some information on the University of Washington's website (the author of CSWimap) that said you need to RECOMPILE with:
# make IP=6

So I downloaded and compiled that.

For some reason its not linking with /usr/local/ssl/lib so I symbollically LINKED libssl and libcrypto to /usr/lib and finally I just needed to copy the ssl keys from /opt/csw to /usr/local/ssl

Now everything works fine with IPv6

Solve : Ubuntu Server, Problem resolving domains.?

Answer»

I have a Ubuntu 12.04 machine, and for some reason, doing Code: [SELECT]ping google.com returns Code: [Select]ping: unknwn host "google.com"
But if i use any IP, such as google's, it works.

I think this WOULD be a problem with the "HOSTS" file or something like that.

Anyway, if you have any ideas, that would be great. Thanks. Clearly your machine's DNS is not set up correctly. What's in the file /etc/resolv.conf?That file was empty. I found the solution to place "nameserver 192.168.1.1" in that file. This has worked so far. It sounds like you aren't getting your DNS server when you get your IP adress, is your network adapter set to receive addresses from a DHCP server? You can check by looking at /etc/network/interfacesDo one thing ,, JUst add nameserver 8.8.8.8 in your (VI /etc/resolv.conf )

Solve : Linux Distro Suggestion for P4 2.0Ghz w/ 1GB RAM & 40GB HDD?

Answer»

Looking for a Linux Distro suggestion for Pentium 4 2.0Ghz with 1GB RAM, 40GB HDD, Integrated Intel 845 Graphics.

*Features needed = GUI and still supported for security updates.

*** Also this (manufactured in 2002) system is so old that its bios does not support bootable USB devices and it only has a CD-ROM installed so the Distro has to fit ONTO a CD-R 700MB disc.

I was going to put Linux Mint 14 on this system, but they no longer have ISO's for CD's available for download, only DVD ISO's.

I then looked AROUND and found Fedora 17 available as a modern OS that would "FIT" burn to a CD-R and booted off of that before i went to work today and it showed a quick flash of Linux bootloader etc, and then the screen went black and it then came back with green text crushed/distorted on black background. I could barely make out something about Kernel and 86. I then rebooted it and selected an option to boot Fedora 17 Live Distro with minimal system requirements and still got this error screen.

*This system by the way is a healthy system on Windows XP. I added a removable drive bay to it so I can have Linux on 1 drive and the original Windows XP Pro on the other drive to make this tower multipurpose for projects etc.

Also ran Memtest 86 version 4 off the Fedora 17 Live CD and it ran with 7 passes without issues. Just ran this even though nothing suggesting it had to be run since the system runs without issues otherwise.

The Live Distro of Fedora 17 claims to be x86 so I wasnt using a x64 (64-bit) Distro on a 32-bit CPU

*Maybe I need to invest in an IDE DVD-Rom drive. Was thinking maybe of installing an earlier version of Mint such as Mint 9 and then upgrade it once I have internet support to download the recent version, but as my college professor said long ago, its best to install Linux clean than to upgrade its version on the fly. If I performed a Linux Mint 9 to version 14 upgrade, it will be the first OS other than from Microsoft that I upgraded on the fly from prior to newer version as well as the first version upgrade that wasnt via CD or DVD.

Thanks for looking this info over and offering suggestion(s)***UPDATE*** --- I located an IDE DVD/CD-RW drive that I can install into this system. Going to burn the Mint 14 ISO to DVD-R and see if it installs without issues like Fedora 17 Desktop x86/64 Live CD had.Installed Mint 14 x86 without any problems. Was surprised Mint 14 was released about a month ago and already 322 updates to default install.

Was concerned that this 11 year old computer might show signs of not being able to keep up with demands of a newer Mint 14 installation as for the last version of Mint I ran on it was Mint 11 which had lesser system requirements.

Was also concerned about the limited driver support for the Intel 845 GL GPU, which has been an issue with other operating systems, but it was automatically detected and full performance at 1024x768. *Ran into issues with Intel no longer supporting this chipset for modern OS like Windows 7 32-bit. For Windows 7 32-bit I had to install the Windows XP drivers under XP compatability mode checked and run as administrator checked to get anything better than 640x480.

But with Mint 14, this system runs at a good pace. Added some screenlets to monitor the CPU and Memory and add the clock in upper right corner to make it just like my Windows 7 desktop appearance. Pentium 4 2.0Ghz socket 478 CPU idles at around 15% and 400MB of 1GB 266Mhz DDR RAM. Further testing reveiled that this system also can play youtube videos without being choppy. I was thinking that this legacy Intel 845 GL GPU with shared memory would choke on playing videos, but it played them without any issues in windowed playback. The real test will be full screen playback.

Lastly I found it interesting that during the installation process after entering user name and password, the Mint 14 distro named my system "Dave-Imperial" .... I was impressed that it was able to read from system hardware information that this was a Trigem Imperial GL-VE motherboard to lift the "Imperial" name from which originally came out of a dead & dropkicked tower eMachine Celeron 2Ghz that I got for free and stuffed a P4 2Ghz into it from a dead HP and upgraded from 256MB Ram to 1GB from other dead systems that had 512MB sticks in them. ( * A local computer shop use to let me pick through their computer junk before it would go to recycle and take what I WANTED since it would cost them to dispose of the junk. Their policy was I could take anything and as much as I wanted, BUT hard drives had to be wiped clean for OBVIOUS reasons if I were to take to use any.)Though it may be a little late now but Lubuntu is probably worth TAKING a look at. Maybe its too late...but i think you must consider zorin os 6 lite edition...

Never too late to check out Linux Distros! I have a removable hard drive in this system and will try those out on the 3rd drive I have.

Solve : Flash and Java Issues?

Answer»

Okay, I'm running an e-machine T3092 with 1GB RAM and a geforce 6200 video card. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on it with FF 18.0.1 and Chrome 24.0.1312.57.

Now with Chrome it's easy, anything with FLASH and a bar pops up saying Could Not LOAD Shockwave Flash. It's been enabled in the plugins.

With FF I get nothing, not even a placeholder TELLING me to get Flash.

I've reinstalled Flash, gnash, Lightspark and Flashaid, all to no avail. For Java I've installed Iced Tea, and no joy with it either. This is just an update.

I have Iced Tea working and now have Java in FF and Chrome. I've still not been able to get anywhere with Flash.Update 2.

I have Flash working now, and Java. It sure took a while. There is still one site that I have difficulties with though.

http://www.battlecam.com

It shows me the Flash placeholder and just tells me that I need to INSTALL Flash. Which of course is already installed. I'm wondering if the site uses HTML 5 at all in it's streaming content.

In Chrome it still tells me that it can't load the plugin - I'm not too WORRIED about that though, I really don't like Chrome.

I want to make a thumbdrive that boots to Mint 13, but doesnt act like a LIVE read-only distro. I want the thumb drive to act like a normal Linux build where I can add software etc and save changes. Found a reference to someone doing this with Fedora 15, but lots of info missing.

Mint 13 installer has a "Something Else" option as attached in pic, for custom installations, since the other choices never look at USB drives and only normal hard drives. So I have to use this option to install from 1 stick to another stick and the problem i ran into is not knowing what partitions are required and what size to make them? The USB thumbdrive is 8GB and Mint CLAIMS to require 5.3GB is available for install.

I havent had to manually set up Linux partitions for an install since RedHat 6.0 MANY years ago, so i figured I'd check here on what sizes to make the partitions. Also, does it make sense to have a swap partition on a thumbdrive? You can install and run without them. I was just thinking that since the system has 4GB Ram and you should make swap space = 1.5x RAM and i have 8GB thumbdrive it wouldnt work out too well eating up 6GB of my 8GB. Also I would think that performance would be degraded if the USB thumbdrive was being used as extra memory as well with a swap space which is intended for real hard drives to handle.

Also if there is an easier method than installing from a 1GB thumb drive to another 8GB to make a USB bootable read/write version of Mint 13 thumbdrive, I would be interested in going that route if there is a automatic method that works.

Thanks

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]In many Ubuntu/Linux Mint(which is based on Ubuntu and have a lot of similarities, e.g. PPA compatibility)installers there is an official option to provide persistent software and documents:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/live-usb-install-puts-linux-thumb-drive-ease/
But this still treats the drive as a Live CD as opposed to a native install, and many have reported problems once the number of installed packages increases.
The only con I can think of to putting swap on the USB drive is the possibility of wearing out the flash memory more quickly (though your hard drive probably will suffer mechanical damage far before that happens) and the extremely limited transfer SPEED if you're using USB 2.0 as opposed to 3.0.
Not too sure about your recommendation for having 1.5x times the capacity of the physical RAM allocated to swap. (I have a VPS running Ubuntu 11.10 on the OpenVZ virtualization platform with 128M RAM, 128M swap and there aren't any stability issues with apache2, php5, fastcgi, and a couple other programs like OpenVPN and an IRC gateway, and haven't had to reboot in over a month.) I am installing Mint 14 XFCE Nadia on a netbook now, and I had to create a swap partition before it let me proceed :S
Give your idea a go! By all means. Format your USB drive and create the partitions first. Ext2 is SUPPOSED to be less weary in TERMS of read/write cycles, so try using that, and 2 GB swap space should be sufficient. Don't forget to specify the location of the GRUB bootloader- DON'T OVERWRITE YOUR HARD DRIVE'S BOOTLOADER! Make sure you're writing to the Ext2 partition you created. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/Installing . http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

Thanks for the replies... I thought this request might not be POSSIBLE. But thanks to both of you, now I see it can be done just as I want. I never knew about the Persistent Installation to make a virtual computer on a drive which is exactly what I am looking for to make my work and data portable on a computer of my choice configuration on a small portable thumb drive in which any PC matching the minimum hardware requirements can be turned into my computer and pick up where I left off with anything I am working on etc. The flexibility to run on just about any PC hardware meeting the minimum requirements, and be able to pick up where I left off with anything I am working on is exactly what I am looking for.

Prior to being able to do this, I'd have to have 2 USB drives, one with the Live Distro and the other for my data. Now I should be able to have a single USB thumb drive that can save data to without read-only state interferring. Going to work on this tonight when I get out of work. Thanks

Persistent Installation
You can, if you want, create a “persistent” installation of Ubuntu and other Debian-based distributions. What does this mean? Software you install and documents you create after booting this thumb drive will stay on your thumb drive. It’s a virtual computer on a drive!

Solve : problem with old floppy drive?

Answer»

Hello, I am a new Linux mint 13 user and having problems with an old floppy drive. When i double click on the icon a pop up comes up saying no media found. I tried the mount and unmount, not sure if i typed it correct. I STILL can not get it to WORKARE you sure this drive is a good working 3.5" floppy drive? I used Mint 13 Cinnamon with a USB external 3.5" 1.44MB floppy drive and it mounted just fine to test to see if it had any issues with Floppy Drive support since just about no one uses floppy drives anymore. The 20 year old floppy in the drive with Wolfenstein 3D was able to be read without any problems. I DIDNT have to do anything special to mount this drive. So either the drive might be bad or the disk in the drive might be junk? Quote from: smitty56 on January 16, 2013, 09:15:36 AM

I am [...] having problems with an old floppy drive.

There is no MAGIC Linux command that can revive an old floppy drive. Get a new one.

You should TRY another disk first, to see if that's the problem.

Solve : Remove grub loader?

Answer»

Ok, so here's the PROBLEM. We trash-picked a (relatively nice) computer which has:

Ubuntu, with linuz 2.6.35-28-generic
Ubuntu, with linuz 2.6.35-28-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, with linuz 2.6.35-27-generic
Ubuntu, with linuz 2.6.35-27-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, with linuz 2.6.35-22-generic
Ubuntu, with linuz 2.6.35-22-generic (recovery mode
Memory test (memtest86+)
Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200)
Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)

So I want to remove the Ubuntu options and automatically boot windows 7 when the computer is turned on. The problem is that none of the Ubuntu options work, and the only way that I have found that will allow me to edit GRUB, is through Ubuntu command line. Is there any way to either edit GRUB from windows 7, or to SWAP over to the windows loader? (we do not have the disk to windows 7, as it wasn't with the computer when we found it)

Thanks for the help!I don't believe you have the LEGAL right to run Windows 7 if you "trash-picked" that machine.
What does "trash-picked" mean?

If time is money, then the OP could do this:
1. Replace the hard drive.
2. Install a recent Linux Mint download: http://www.linuxmint.com/
3. Sell it to somebody that LIKES it.

Otherwise, I have no idea why the OP wants o spend any time on this if he does not want to sell it.

Look for the COA on the back of the computer. If it is there, the PC is still the one registered with MS. Make a backup of the OS..

If you want Windows 7, forget my remark about installing Linux Mint. Windows 7 can clean up the GRUB loader and overwrite it.
This might help.

You can run most Linux as a VM if you have occasional desire to play with Linux.

Thanks for the help, ended up using easyBCD, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDQmDY58yKk) don't know if that fully removed ubuntu, but now windows 7 loads right away.

Solve : SMB Mounting errors to Samba server?

Answer»

Hello to all.

I currently RUN about 19 rackmount MACHINES on Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. Right now, I have several servers that I WOULD like to share the same NAS location, to keep all the files on a nice, large storage server set up in RAID 5 across 6 hard drives.

On the server, I have Samba installed, and working just fine, it seems. I followed this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5Z_-3EBIHE I managed to install WebMin, and used that to configure Samba. Right now, the shares are all accessable on windows clients with each share completely public (the guest user being nobody:nogroup with read and write permissions)

What I need to do is mount the share //192.168.1.150/severs into a location in the home directory, where my particular daemon stores it's files at /home/service/daemon/ and I need the directory /home/service/daemon/servers/ directory mounted to //192.168.1.150/servers.

I have been using the command "smbmount //192.168.1.150/servers /home/service/daemon/servers" and I have been getting "mount error (13) permission denied" when mounting as a non-root user, and when I mount the location as root, the user "service", which the daemon runs as, does not have access to the mounted directory.

My samba server has the user service in the valid users, possible users and read-write users.

What here am I missing? from any Windows computer, I can go to the network tab, go into the share, and red, and write files, directories, and the such, and from Ubuntu, as long as I am root, I can go read, write and make directories.

I have not tested from Ubuntu Desktop, as I currently only have the servers running ubuntu (I am not fond of giving up dreamweaver)

Any help is appreciated. These servers, I am hoping to roll out into production soon. Thank you.

UPDATE: As a note, I LOADED Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop on a Live CD and was able to mount just fine to the Samba volume and write/read files.

Solve : Switching from Windows 7 - OS Options?

Answer»

After a HDD failure on a laptop i have been recomended/suggested Ubuntu as an alternative to windows 7. I have downloaded it from the live CD LIST site, made a bootable CD and tried the OS on a Packard Bell Desktop (run from CD not HDD). I have to SAY i was greatly impressed with the OS and am considering instaling it properly on a machine (probably in tandem with win 7 in case of problems. I have since discovered just how many Linux type OSs there are out there and was wondering if Ubuntu was the right one for a 'newbie' fresh from win7 like me?

If i go for Ubuntu, or any other variant, i would like to know how easy it is to install and configure and how compatible it is with widely available software more commonly used with windows. Any tips or tricks that might be usefull?

ThanksFor Windows software compatibility you should check Wine, it's independent of Linux distro.

I'd recommend going with Mint or Ubuntu, though I prefer Mint - it's more user-friendly.

For me, it is easy, however you do have to have knowledge if you want to go into the more advanced areas, in any Linux distro, but judging from your message, I assume that you won't need that. So in short - configuration and installation of Mint would be extremely easy, I bet even someone who's never used a PC before could do it.Good morning richardf77

Like a lot of folks here and around the world have used and do like Linux, my self I have used red hat and Ubuntu versions.

From my experiences I would say any debian based linux vairant like Ubuntu you should start with. I too was very impressed with Ubuntu OS it was very user friendly. Nice packet manager very easy to get started with and learn etc.

But for windows with out a question in my opinion Windows 7 is by far the best OS MS has made to date. Don't get me wrong I still have 2 XP boxes (1 for re-imaging HD's and older diagnostic software) and (1 for reg desktop) and I still do like XP but W7 can do a just about everything that XP could.

In my house I have a Windows 2003 SERVER, 2 windows 7 laptops, 2 Windows 7 desktops (1 media center box and my in-house work box) and like i stated above I have 2 XP boxes now when I have time I will set up another Ubuntu system I am still very impressed with it to this day.

Well this is my 2 cents I hope what little bit in this post will help you, but just remember if you still have a W7 disk / KEY and try Ubuntu and decide you don't like linux you can always format and start over and go back to windows Hi, I maybe too LATE, but I just want to suggest using zorin os. It is based on ubuntu 12.04 and basically it is designed for windows user that decides they want to try linux. I personnally tried this OS and after a couple of days I decide to use it as my primary OS. You will be surprise on how it works out of the box and how user friendly it is. If you are not a gamer, maybe you won't need your windows program anymore after trying this OS.

Solve : where to find a linux live cd?

Answer»

where do you go to GET the Linux live cd trying to recover a vista problem .was suggested to use Linux live. There are MANY links that show but I do not want to download and have it make me change to that toolbar and change my home page for that advertisement. Here is a are list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_live_CDs
"List of live CDs
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of live CDs. A live CD or live DVD is a CD or DVD containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk DRIVE."

Note that a "Live CD" has limited ability to repair a Vista OS. The "Live CD" can be used to export your DATA to an EXTERNAL hard drive.

Solve : Most of the shared libraries or their links are missing?

I have been working on my FreeBSD computer for LIKE 3 days now. Shared libraries keeps being missing. I'm out of idea. I'd tell you that I have FreeBSD 7.4, generic kernel.Sorry, I can not help. As for me, I would just START over again

Here is some materiel for reference.

Top Ten Distributions
An overview of today's top distributions (UNIX like)
You might consider another variant of BSD. Or even Linux. The above link mentions five BSD distros.

Of course you know that BSD is not Linux. The link below is for others reading this thread.
The FreeBSD Project

I chose BSD because it is FLEXIBLE. Sorry, but I need it.Understood. The version of FreeBSD you have was done in 2011.
There is now a a RELEASE of version 9.1 that was supposed to be OK.
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/9.1R/announce.html
Quote

FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE Announcement

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 9.1-RELEASE. This is the second release from the stable/9 branch, which improves on the stability of FreeBSD 9.0 and introduces some new features. Some of the highlights:

New Intel GPU driver with GEM/KMS support
netmap(4) fast userspace packet I/O framework
    ZFS improvements from illumos project
CAM Target Layer, a disk and processor device emulation subsystem
Optional new C++11 stack including LLVM libc++ and libcxxrt
...
Have you thought about a new install of version 9.1 ?

YES, I did, and I also experienced system breakage by doing so.
So, may I ask how I should do a safe upgrade? Here is my preference. But I no longer believe conserving drive space is a priority. Getting something to work is more important to me, even if it takes twice the space on the bHDD.
I would:
Use the partition manager to open up some space on the hard drive.
Install the full new version of the free space. The boot manager should put options for both systems in the boot menu.
Do some testing on the new system. If nit looks good, migrate some important stuff over to the new install.
Upgrades on BSD and Linux can be harder than it should be. And look at Microsoft. With Windows®, they don't even try for a smooth upgrade anymore. The best they offer is to save your data and some bookmarks and stuff. Likewise upgrades in UNIX like systems is no more easy. Expect to install your apps over again.I screwed up my BSD by trying to upgrade it, and I just wiped out the whole drive and start anew, without packages inatalled like that with no dependency checks. Thanks for the hint, everything works great!

Solve : Linux LiveCD problems?

Answer»

I downloaded the Slax and Ubuntu LiveCDs yesterday and tried them both out today
I can boot from them fine, but then with Ubuntu I get some music and then a black screen. Eventually the CD drive spins down, but nothing happens even if I leave it for half an hour. No sound, no display, no response, whatever I press. I had to shut it down by holding down the power button.
With Slax, it boots fine, but then whatever option I choose for the display mode it doesn't work. I get a lot of errors about failing to LOAD things and that "x may have crashed". They scrolled by quite fast, so I don't actually know the exact messages I got.
So in short, NEITHER CD works. With one I get a black screen, and with the other I get a lot of error messages until I shut down.
Can anyone help me out here? Could it be a problem with hardware incompatability?Tell us about your hardware.

Also when you boot Slax (let's focus on that) your login in root, the password is toor. On screen you will see the command to configure your video adapter> I don't remember what it is, but you will see that. Type it and press enter and it will set up the X Configuration for the best results for the video card it configures. You will be returned to the prompt where you type in startx and press enter. What happens then? The command, GX1, is "xconf" I believe (for FUTURE reference). That sounds correct. Thanks.

I use so many Linux flavors it is hard to keep them all straight. It is xconf, that was the first thing I did after logging in as root with password toor
I then used startx, whuch is when all the errors came up
There was no GUI or ANYTHING, just the black screen with white letters reporting errors, problems and so on
Hardware - AMD Turion 64 MT-37 2GHz, ATi Mobility X1600 256Mb, 1Gb RAM, 15.4" widescreen 1280x800, 100Gb 7200rpm HDD, DVD-RW drive (Sony DW-Q520A)
Thanks for the repliesI downloaded Ubuntu and Slax again, plus the 64 bit version of Ubuntu
Same problems with all 3 distros - Slax gives me errors, and both of the Ubuntu versions just sit there with a black screen, looking at me dumbly
I'm at a complete loss now, I've no idea why these aren't working unless it's a hardware incompatibilityWhat happens if you press Ctrl+Alt+F1?On which distro?
And when?Any distro, at the black screen.OK I'll try it when I get some time, thanksI trid Ctrl + Alt + F1 at the black screen on Ubuntu.
I got a command prompt, but had no idea where to go from there.
I typed help and got a list of commands, but they scrolled past too fast to read.
I shut it down then because I had no idea what to do.
I also downloaded a Linspire LiveCD, but that hangs halfway through loading - the progress BAR stays halfway along and the CD drive spins down, not doing anything. It doesn't do anything if I leave it for half an hour either.Experience has shown me that a slow burn (4x or less) is desirable, assuming the download was not corrupted. You may want to burn another. After Ubuntu and Slax didn't work the first time, I searched the forum for a while and found your advice about slow burns.
I burned all 4 of these at 4x speed, with nothing else running in the background.
It could be a corrupted download, but I doubt all 4 CDs would be corrupted.
Plus, I used the CD validation tool on Ubuntu, and it checked out OK.
The others don't have that option, but still . . . all of them corrupted?Don't worry - I just wanted to establish that your distro had installed. It has. Ctrl+Alt+F7 will take you back to the black screen. From there, Ctrl+Alt++ should cycle between different resolutions. See what happens when you try that.OK, I'll try that in a bit.
Thanks very much for all your suggestions, everyone.

Solve : Sun Storage?

Answer»

Can I connect 2 servers to a Sun Storage? Do I need any license? I wish to connect a Sun SERVER with Solaris 10 and a HP server with Linux AS 3 to the Sun Storage USING Fibre Channel. I've installed HBA card into both servers respectively. You might TRY emailing Sun or your supplier. I for one have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, I'm afraid. It would be helpful if you said which Sun Storage array you are using, but in any case none of them require a license to attach extra hosts.

Some arrays such as the SE9900 SERIES Hitachi Lightning arrays require licenses per TB of storage, and extra features such of Shadow Image. But if you have enough HBAs on the array and the servers, then you don't need a licnese to connect the host.

If you're talking Veritas Volume Manager which is host based RAID SOFTWARE, then you need licenses to run that on each host (except if your storage is SSA, A5000, A5100 or A5200 of course)

Please supply more details? ....

Solve : removal of duplicate lines in a file?

Answer»

Does anyone know how to remove duplicate lines from a file?

I USE a script to transfer a number of files created from some automated copy/pastes to our Unix server, then I use cat to merge them into one file to be PROCESSED by another script. Unfortunately the next script runs a program against our revenues database and this doesn't accept duplicate lines, sometimes the users have accidentally requested the same TRANSACTION more than once and are not aware they've DONE this, so the files can contain duplicates...

There doesn't seem to be a way of removing these when using cat, but I WONDERED if there's something else I could run against the file to remove these?you can use the uniq command
eg
Code: [Select]sun:/home# more file
line 1
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4
line 5
line 5
line 6
line 7
sun:/home# uniq file
line 1
line 2
line 3
line 4
line 5
line 6
line 7

Hi,
Thanks, that's great!
I don't suppose you know how to remove blank lines from a file though?
My file has a blank line between each of the lines of data - this blank line appears to be coming from the shareware I'm using to do the automated copy/paste so unfortunately I have no control over it...
Once again, thanks for the help!Ooh, ignore me, I've just found I can remove the blank lines with sed...

sed -e '/^$/d' < myfile

Solve : Problems with startup error?

I am getting the error:
<0> Kernal Panic - Not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.
Whenever I begin to load the following Linux operating systems:
Feathers Linux (Live CD), Slax Linux (Live CD), Vector Linux (HD install, Lilo partition on MBR, thanks Rob_Pomeroy, it does work excellent)

Well, anyways, I get this error when booting the OS. It comes before the desktop, and I think its before EVERYTHING loads. There is QUITE a lot of information before this error, but it sweeps by so fast!

My computer is a 128MB RAM, 733MHz processor, 7GB HD.

I am planning on switching to Ubuntu, and getting WineHQ so I can run some Windows applications.

Please help, since I cant get it to work, I have stuck myself with DOS and Windows 3.0!

What causes this problem, and how can it be fixed? My guess would be either a bug in the kernel/a kernel module, or a hardware problem (possibly motherboard). Try a distribution that comes with a different version of the Linux kernel. Do you know for a fact that your hardware is supported?Well, the CD's all work on other computers, just not this one.
One another one of my OS CD's, it ALSO SAYS that its not syncing

Solve : .profile Script Issue - command not found?

In my .profile script on my Sun Solaris machines I use the FOLLOWING command to retrieve the host name into an environment variable:

HOST=`uname -n`

This WORKS fine on Sun, but on my Linux machines I get the following message when the .profile runs and the variable is EMPTY:

ksh: ./.profile[10]: uname: not found

What syntax changes do I need to make to get the same funcationality to work on Linux that works on Sun?

Linux Version: 2.4.21-47.ELsmp
Sun version: SunOS 5.8

Thanks!Try specifying the full path to uname (usually /bin/uname). Or you can use /bin/hostname in place of "uname -n".Fantastic, that worked. Thank you. It's always the little things. I guess I was attempting to CALL those commands before the path had been established.
No problem.

     mail [-iInNv] [-u user]

INTRODUCTION
Mail is an intelligent mail processing system, which has a command syn-
tax reminiscent of ed(1) with lines replaced by MESSAGES.

-v Verbose mode. The details of delivery are displayed on the userâs
           terminal.

-i Ignore tty interrupt signals. This is particularly useful when
using mail on noisy phone lines.

-I Forces mail to run in interactive mode even when input isnât a
terminal. In particular, the â~â special character when SENDING
mail is only active in interactive mode.

-n Inhibits reading /etc/mail.rc upon startup.

-N Inhibits the initial display of message headers when reading mail
           or editing a mail folder.

-s Specify subject on command line (only the first argument after the
-s flag is used as a subject; be careful to quote subjects con-
           taining spaces.)

-c Send carbon copies to list of users.

-b Send blind carbon copies to list. List should be a comma-sepa-
           rated list of names.

-f Read in the contents of your mbox (or the SPECIFIED file) for pro-
cessing; when you quit, mail writes undeleted messages back to
           this file.

     -u Is equivalent to:

                 mail -f /var/spool/mail/user

Etc.Hi,
Thanks for that, but I was using sendmail as I run it within a shell script to send a file through our MS Exchange server to Outlook users as a scheduled job. Unfortunately our so called "Intelligent Message Filter" on the Exchange server was treating the unix MAILS as spam, but if I specify a subject I can use a custom weighting xml file to change the weighting of the unix emails based on the specified subject.

We found that you can create a header file containing the fields -

To:
Date:
From: and
Subject:

within unix, so I've created one containing the addresses of my recipients and the subject containing a word that's allowed through my content filter list, and I basically cat this header file onto the start of the file I'm sending the users each time, and run it using /usr/lib/sendmail -t < joinedfile

Thanks for looking into if for me though,
Michelle. No problem - that was going to be my next suggestion if you felt you had to use sendmail.

Free Network Audit tools
or
Free Network inventory software

Some results could be:

http://www.open-audit.org/
These are network tools and can audit whatever is on he network. The run on Linux host machines and in some cases have Windows versions.

Solve : Unable to access BIOS, laptop with UEFI, Ubuntu 14 installed (Dell XPS13)?

Answer»

Hi. I have an ultrabook Dell XPS 13 with pre-installed Windows 8. One day, I accidentally overwrote win 8 on my laptop (which normally has backup) and I installed Ubuntu 14 straight away as I was in the middle of finishing my assignments. After that, when I tried to install a Win 7 from usb, I failed as I can't access to the BIOS of my computer to change the BOOT preference. Maybe there's another WAY to boot as this laptop is equipped with UEFI, I don't know.

Do you by chance know how to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks in advance Quote

Do you by chance know how to troubleshoot this problem?

YES, you contact the maker of your laptop.
You say the PC is a ultrabook Dell XPS 13 with pre-installed Windows 8.
You overwrote Windows 8 with a auto install of LINUX, namely Ubuntu.
Dell support is familiar with this kind of problem and they are in the best position to help you.

When you contact Dell, you will need the serial number.

Solve : Help with Linux Mint?

Answer»

I have a 250 GB Hard Drive that has Vista on it and I reduced the partition to 160 GB. I tried to load Linux Mint on the remaining 70 GB of space, it was formatted. I got as far as where I had to chose between MANUAL or auto. I tried auto first and it wonted to install on the partition that has vista. There was no choice to choose the other partition (the I drive). I went back and tried manual. It asked for a partition to put the OS on and one for the swap file I make them both 2 GB. I was told that I needed 2 GB for Mint and that I need the swap file to be as big as the amount of memory that you have on the machine. That is 2 GB. After all that it told me that it wasn't activated. I am at a loss as what to do now. I need all the HELP I can get. What do I do now. Oh, I tried the Linux site and didn't get any help. By that I mean that what they proposed didn't help. THANK you much for your time.If you have a hard time with the Linux Boot loader, try something else.
There is a way in Vista to set up a boot manager that will LET you boot another Operating system. If that is too hard, you MIGHT want to try a third party boot manager. Problem is, Vista has changed things that used to work good the way they were. It is said to be better, but not easy to understand.

But you take a look at this.
Please tell me if you think it is easy.

http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vista_with_linux_vista_installed_first.htmThat worked fine. It was easy. The only problem I had was I couldn't get the modem to work. When I deleted Linux Mint, Vista wouldn't work. Thank you for your time.

MKS C Tools for windows from about 1985. I don't know the version.

I'm kind of confused that this is in the Linux forum...

Anyway, I suspect my answer as above is correct. Try a few similar FILES with one line of different lengths - do you always get the 3 ghost characters counted? From an IBM AIX page, wc -c counts bytes unless the -k flag is added.

I know that's not the same SOFTWARE, but it supports the idea that wc is counting something besides the actual printed characters.i have showed bill why hereI'm seeing a lot of great minds thinking alike here (plus my rather dull mind). Quote

The top positions are assigned by seniority and not knowledge or accomplishments.Come again?I'd just as well the Star Trek ranks from the first of April were still in place. Our forum ranks may signal levels of expertise, but most of US are known by the advice we give: Patio and Broni for all 'round expertise, evilfantasy for malware expertise, kpac for web page knowledge, and several for batch file expertise. (I leave out many names, and I apologize.)

Me? Well, I try to throw out some pertinent questions every now and then, and I'm really good at recommending you not flash the BIOS of your computer -- unless it's ABSOLUTELY a last resort -- and I'm not sure I like it, even then!

Sure, I like that I rank "Specialist," and that i'll have another in less than one hundred posts, but if someone were to ask if I consider myself a computer specialist, I'd emphatically say, "No."

Solve : GRUB background image not showing?

Answer»

I have CREATED a splashimage which I want to use on my old PC which uses GRUB as it's bootloader.

I know there is nothing wrong with the image as I have applied it to GRUB (Ubuntu) inside a virtual machine, and it works flawlessly.

But on my old PC, it just doesn't show.

I have the image, breeze.xpm.gz, in the /boot/grub/ folder.
I have the /boot on a separate partition to Ubuntu partition.
I assumed the /boot partition was (hd0,2) because when I boot Ubuntu it says "Boot from (hd0,2) ext3" (My Ubuntu partition is ext4 formatted).

Here's my menu.lst, it's been customized:

Solve : beginner?

i am a newbie to unix, i use unix in company. but i want to practice more, how can i install a unix on my personal computer and if i can't, can i install linux instead? are their commands same?

thank youLinux and Unix are very similar. Solaris is Unix-based, so that's a good option for the greatest similarity. OpenSolaris is free and can be DOWNLOADED and run on PC hardware. Head over to DistroWatch for the LOW down on all the Linux distributions, including some that can co-exist with Windows (but I don't recommend that in your case - I think it might confuse the learning process).Rob is, as always, correct. I'm not aware of any "free" versions of UNIX besides the OpenSolaris. Learning Linux is a MUCH less expensive alternative, and you will see many similarities which will help you become familiar with UNIX.I'm thinking ALSO that some of the BSDs may be worth a look. It's been a while SINCE I tried one but FreeBSD is very Unix-like too.

Solve : Linux server pathway?

Answer»

Hi

A friend of mine has just bought space on a dedicated server (linux) and asked me to help put his website up.

I was going swimmingly until I reached the point where I was asked for a path to a Mysql database that I was installing... And I had no idea but what made me really cross is the Fasthosts TECH support don't offer linux support and just told me to go to the internet and search... :-(

Anyway in the absolute hope that anyone could possibly point me in the right direction plleeeaassee could someone tell me how to find the correct pathway?

The instruction on the mysql install panel says:
    * The default location where your digital files will be placed e.g. /server1/root/files/
You MUST enter a valid folder.

the old pathway was: e:\domains\p\88.208.217.126\user\htdocs\ipnmonitor\files\

Any ideas what the new pathway could possibly be?

Thanks so much in advance

JenMaybe this is of no help.
Or maybe this is what you need.
Rather than spend more time digging SQL and PHP I take the easy way out.
May cheap web space places offer a GUI CALLED 'cpanel' and a feature bundle called "Fantastico".
Last count I have about three test sites. After I build them I run out of ideas. Poor motivation.I read a book on WordPress. The gist of it is that you don't want to do the programming, you just want to start up a Blog or a Chat or a Forum. Whatever. With Word Press, or one of the other ready made Blog in a Box things, you just install it the way it wants and POW you got a web site!
I could not get the WordPress to install by HAND. So I used the Fantastico tool and presto. It worked right the first time!
Or, if you like the CH site, just install SMF. It's very easy!
To see this. just Google 'cpanel demo' and look it over. It uses mySQL.
Your MySQL "path" may be of the format, 'mysql://username:[email protected]/DATABASENAME' - but that really depends on your application. What is the application that you're trying to configure to work with MySQL?

Solve : Any advice on trying Linux 3.7 "no install" CD?

Answer»

Greetings,

NOTE: Sorry about getting this question in the wrong forum (ie: Windows)....This is only my second post.....
_______________________________________ _________________

I was given a "no install" LINUX disk which runs from the CD. The CD says says "Powered by Knoppix Linux 3.7".

I have always been curious about using Linux and would like to experiment with it. (some people I have even heard say that once they learned Linux they preferred it over Windows)

Question: Is it safe to try this in my computer or am I risking problems by letting it boot up the computer from the disc drive? ( I am running XP Home) Any comments would be appreciated because, as I mentioned before, deliberately inducing nasty problems into my computer results in HAIR tearing and I need all I got already.

Thanks,
SampThis is what's called a "Live" CD...it will run from the CD itself and not install anything on your machine...
Ubuntu is another one you may want to TAKE a gander at...
Good Luck. This is a very good way to learn about Linux. Suse Live is another one. The advantage of booting from a CD is that nothing is altered on the hard drive. One disadvantage is that Live Linux CDs tend to be rather slow to boot up and also can be slow to START applications, but even so they are great fun to USE.

PLS HELP .
THANKING YOUI suspect there's an issue with your BIOS that Red Hat is not liking. What version of Red Hat is it? Have you tried any live Linux CDs like Knoppix, Kanotix, Ubuntu Live, etc?no not kike that !If i start to install in another pc its ALSO same .
pls help
Again, what version of Red Hat are you trying to install?

Rob has suggested several versions of Live! CD which you can download and run from a CD, once you transfer the ISO image from the download file to a CD. The advantage is, you don't have to ACTUALLY install anything on the computer for the purposes of testing the Linux version. Then you can see if that PARTICULAR version of Linux will run on your system. (It will run a little slower, since all functions are running from the CD.)

The version of Red Hat which you have may have an older kernel which may not support newer hardware.

I think I "said" most of that right, Rob. Sounds fine to me Aegis, although you may say anything you like as far as I am concerned.

To vinfo12: let us know if you need assistance with the VARIOUS steps involved in what we're suggesting - locating an ISO, burning it, etc. What I meant was, I've only used a few Live CD's, and wanted to make sure my advice was correct.

I've tried Linspire, Freespire, and Ubuntu. I recommend Ubuntu, based on my limited experience, but also know that Knoppix and Mandriva are excellent choices to consider.

maybe a dumb idea when i look back now :pYou can use MD5Summer on Windows.

Agree with Banjo - definitely download again. Perhaps use a download manager such as Orbit Downloader to improve the speed of the download and reduce the likelihood of a transmission ERROR (or at least make it QUICKER for you to download again).

Maybe also try downloading from a different mirror next time.kk thanks

/closedo/t: can anyone explain to me what "kk" stands for? I've often wondered...no clue. I've heard rumours that "k" os a short form for O.K which is itself a short form of OKAY. So k itself is a shortened form of an acronym- the very epitome of laziness.

One might conclude, therefore, that performs kk is the same as when somebody says "Okay, Okay..."

Solve : Getting no error msg and no results?

Hello,

I need to write a simple cron job that deletes things older than thirty days.

I have created a file del_list.csh and placed it in the cron folder. The entire file is this:
_______
#!/bin/csh
#
#set echo

find /toplist –name "*.html" –mtime +30 –exec rm –rf {} \;
-------

If I type the single LINE of code into the command line it works. If I try to run the file by typing "tcsh del_list.csh" nothing happens. Nothing is deleted and there is no error msg.

del_list.csh is owned by user 'ma' and the permissions are set at 777. The files I'm trying to delete are also owned by user 'ma'.

Why does nothing happen and I get no error msg?

thanks,

RexJ What happens if you "./del_list.csh" instead of "tcsh del_list.csh"?./del_list.csh gives the same thing. No results and no error msg.

RexJ

(and I have always been WARY of disembodied heads, but thanks for the warning)Do you have a BLANK line at the end of your script? I only ask because in testing, this script fails for me unless there's a terminating NEWLINE. I suspect it's something to do with the way the lines are parsed by csh. You, sir, are the MAN. A single blank line at the end fixed everything and even added body and shine to my hair.

Solve : firefox closes completely when exiting runescape (java based)?

title says it all. when i try to navigate my tab away from the runescape game, all tabs and the whole of firefox close.
i can restart it and work with it again afterwards, though, but i don't know how to enter safe mode or debug mode on openSuse 11.0
and if it IS the command "firefox -safe-mode" then that didnt help.

any suggestions on how to fix this problem? (i've only seen 1 other PERSON getting this error. he said it's the same for all other browsers like opera etc.)
I PERSONALLY don't have much (meaning any) experience with OpenSUSE, but I would suggest that you make sure you have the most recent version of Java available installed, as well as check to see that Firefox is appropriately updated. Also I would suggest you disabling all other add ons in order to see if a specific add on is at fault. You may have to do this manually in Firefox, if this doesn't work to launch it in safe mode.Despite what the other person said, have you TRIED any other browser - like Konqeuror (in KDE), for example?

I want to ACCESS my Linux server from Win xp client but i dont know how to do it?Without installing anything you can just use telnet from a DOS window, however if you want the flexibility to use ssh then instal putty on the XP system.

and if you need to display GUIS from your linux machine back to your XP system, then install Xming on the XP system.Might be helpful to point out that telnet is disabled on most modern Linux distributions, for security reasons. Telnet SENDS all information in the clear, including passwords. Any DISTRO worth its salt has openssh active on installation (UNLESS it's a locked-down distro).

I suspect that the OP wants to be able to access files from the XP workstation? If so, Google "Samba". Your Linux distro probably has lots of relevant documentation too.

Solve : can I install two OS's??

Answer»

I'm at a friends house, so sorry if I get a little hazy on my specs
I'm currently running Windows Vista 32 BIT: specs are as follows
130 gig Hard drive
Can't REMEMBER the Processor, but it's a good one I think(sorry for lack of info)
2 gigs of RAM
Nvidia 9800GT
umm... lets just SAY it's a gaming computer and save time

So I want to install Ubuntu on my computer as well, and I have a few questions
1. Is it possible to have two OS on one computer? And can I choose which one I want to use on startup?

2. Do I have to format my computer to do so?

3. I don't plan on installing lots of files on it, so how much space do you recommend I save for it?

Thanks for an help. I decided that if I want a future in computers, it's best that I learn multiple OS as well You need to make a partition on your hard drive try this

1. YES and Yes

2. See above

3.Not surethanks for the reply!
Now my only question left is on how much hard drive space is good for Ubuntu...
would it be good if I partitioned the space so that Vista gets 90 gigs, and Ubuntu gets 40?
As i understand it, Ubuntu takes up about 2.5GB, so its up to you. You say your not gonna use alot of files and that Vista will be your main OS, so maybe around 20GB for Ubuntu.sounds good, thanks

okay since I dont have time at the moment but will before too long to look for answers to such questions. How do you install linux apps? Also, how do you update the kernal? Is that like updateing linux its self and is it like the bios if something goes wrong you have to do a reinstall of it.hello??? You're not paying us for a support CONTRACT. We volunteer our help for free, so its counterproductive to get impatient.

Depends on the version of linux how you install apps. Most install rpm's with rpm -i , but on CentOs/Redhat you can also use yum, on SuSE yast2, and on SOLARIS pkgadd. There's another command for debian too.

Rather than re-compiling the kernel I usually use yast2 to upgrade it with a pre-compiled rpm version, but years ago I used to have to edit Makefiles on SunOS to add kernel support for extra hardware, and then use cc to compile it, then finally copy a new /vmunix into place.yeah, I googled it and it mentioned stuff like that. But I dont really understand it. The only thing is that its hard going from one OS to another so sorry about that. I felt like a good amount of time had passed. I kind of wish there was but funds are low. What version do you want to install?I have red hat, debian, knoppix at least I think thats all them. What version of Red Hat?One gets the impression that Squall would like hand-holding through the entire process of getting to grips with Linux in all its various flavours. I presonally don't have time to volunteer for such a task, but I am happy to point in the direction of some useful resources. Try:

The Linux Documentation Project
HowtoForge

for starters. Also, one should consult the online documentation for each Linux distribution being studied.I'm not asking that just a little bit of aid since I dont now how, I know there is stuff out there but in my current situation I dont have the time. Then you should (or must) wait until you do have time! We can't do your understanding for you.

if you don't want to "mess up" your system, you can download those Live CDs that can run on CD/DVD rom. He keeps mentioning Red Hat, but he won't "say" what version. cause I dont know, I got the disk but didnt think you could do that. Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 08, 2009, 03:39:49 AM
What version do you want to install?
What does it say on the CD?I seem to recall that these questions have been answered: installing Linux apps varies for each distro; read the distro's documentation for further details. No one is going to REPRODUCE that documentation here. You need to read it, period.

Updating the kernel is usually as simple as running something like

apt-get update; apt-get upgrade

or

yum upgrade

depending on which package system your distro uses. Unless you really REALLY know what you're doing (which you don't), don't attempt to install, recompile or configure your own version of the kernel. That is not a simple thing to do. It's hard core...I thought that you could get one program but the install would vary, didnt know it mentioned it. I know that, I thought it was like doing an update for the whole system. The book says that its red hat fedora linux 3, I have Fedora 10 some were does that mean its a more recent copy of this?On the basis that 10 > 3, yes! so I'm right on all accounts.I wouldn't go that far...I got the impretion based on what you posted, sorry.

Solve : rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused?

Answer» HI all,
Im having some problem with my DNS. We are using a Linux web server as one of our web server which runs some live websites. When I trying to get the status of the DNS (NAMED) it comes the following error :

[[email protected] milindras]# /etc/init.d/named status
rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused

The same error appears when Im trying to apply any changes on zone level for a selected doamin in WEBMIN. (Basically can't apply changes)

WEBMIN > Servers > BIND DNS servers > click a selected-domain.co.uk > Apply changes

NDC command failed : rndc: connect failed: 127.0.0.1#953: connection refused

I checked the rndc cofigurations & everything looks fine. I have attached the rndc.conf & named.conf file here with.

Please refer to the message log I have attached. According to logs named starts and shuts down after a while without any reason. Running ps sometimes shows named running (but not rndc) and sometimes does not.

But the server seems to be running without effecting any probelms to the sites or users.
I have been searching weeks for this problem & couldn't find a solution. And also Please note that Im bit NEW to Linux.

Server details :
Linux version 2.6.18-1.2257.fc5smp
Red Hat 4.1.1-1

Appreciate any help on this problem.
Thanks
regards
Milindra

[attachment deleted by admin]Some linux DISTRIBUTIONS include a firewall which is on by DEFAULT. Have you checked to SEE if the linux firewall is enabled? and if port 953/53 is open?

With regards to the daemon dying, why not run named in debug mode. On my linux (SuSE 9.3) you can run named -d 9 -g which means run in foreground with all logging to the screen at debug level 9. Check out man named to see what the equivalent options are on Redhat. Quote from: banjo67xxx on May 01, 2009, 12:29:46 AM

Solve : Anonymous access is enabled?

Answer»

Hi...

I have this ESM violation in UNIX

Anonymous access is enabled

The named NFS exported directory allows anonymous access. If the anon option is not present or if it is set to a value other than -1, anonymous access is allowed. You should set the value of the anon option to -1 to disable anonymous access.

How to solve this ... Im just a beginner and just less knowledge in UNIX

Thanks in advance First off: are you sure you need to use NFS? If not, just disable the service. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on May 26, 2009, 04:43:11 AM

First off: are you sure you need to use NFS? If not, just disable the service.

Hi Rob,

Yes, other users are using this device so I just can't disable the NFS ... I just can't figure out how to disable anonymous access Okay, well I'll prefix this with the disclaimer: I don't use and never have used NFS. But my understanding is this: NFS allows mappings between users on the client system and users on the server system to determine what access (if any) the client has. If on your Unixx system, files are owned by "Joe" and NFS maps this Joe to Joe on the client system, ANDY, say will not have access.

That's simplified because I've not considered group ownership, but you get the point. Linux file systems have three sets of access permissions: the owner of the file, the group owner and everyone else. CHECK the file permissions on your Unix box. If you see something like "rwxr-x---" generally speaking anonymous access will not be enabled unless the anonymous (group) user for NFS is an owner of the file.

I don't think I've explained that very well, but I've found a more detailed explanation here: http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/nfs.htm. It relates to Linux, but the same principles will apply to your Unix system. If you try to access the filesystem over NFS from a server using the root account or from a WINDOWS system which has no concept of UIDS, then you will be anonymous.

In order to circumvent this you can specify in your exports file that you anonymous should be mapped to a specific UID. For EXAMPLE if a user called Andy always uses a PCcalled windows5 then you could put in the exports file an entry that says anon from windows5 is the UID for Andy.

This warning message is simply telling you that anon is not mapped to -1 and so, for example, anyone else using that PC could access Andy's files.

Solve : nee help readind data from DDS-4 SCSI tape?

Answer»

I need to recover files from tape cartridges that were written with a Windows SYSTEM. The drive is a SCSI tape drive (Branded DELL but made by ARCHIVE) . I am able to use the lunux 'mt' commmand to rewind the tape an can get status information from the drive. I also was able to use some tape recovery software on a windows partition to read the files on the tape, but could not save the files without buying the software an I don't have the $$. - the point is that the drive is functional and the TAPES are readable.

I am looking for a method to read and save the files from the tape save USING linix (I use UBUNTU 8.04 )

any help would be appreciated.
How were the files copied to the tape? At a guess, I'd say:

Quote

tar XF /dev/nst1 .

Your dev point may be different. Possibly you could use dd to inspect the first few block of the tape to see what's on there?Rob, is there a tar for Windows?

You didn't tell us what the name of the Windows recovery software was or what format the files are in?

To make your attempts a whole lot quicker, I'd copy the tape to disk with dd, and then use file to see if linux recognises the file type. Then you can experiment with extracting the data from your disk copy using tar, unrar, unzip, gunzip, uncompress, bunzip2, CPIO, gtar, or whatever else you think of. If you're lucky file will tell you what it is and you can extract it first time. Quote from: banjo67xxx on May 29, 2009, 05:44:46 PM
Rob, is there a tar for Windows?

D'oh! As my old maths teacher used to say: Always read the question! Sorry.

Yes tar is available (in various guises) for Windows, but it's less likely to be the system used. I wouldn't be surprised if the contents were written by something hideous like NT Backup, in which case I really don't fancy anyone's chances attempting a recovery using a Linux box. Have you tried reading the tape using Windows Backup?

Solve : Which one would you recommend??

Answer»

I am currently using Windows Vista, and I am thinking about getting Ubuntu. So which would do you think is better? Why do you want to give up Vista?

I am a big fan of Ubuntu, so don't get me wrong, but you give up a lot of computability with the rest of the world when you switch to Linux.

What activities do you like to do on the computer?I mainly just browse the internet, would like to learn some coding, and other computer stuff.*Rob hides from impending religious war*here in the toaster. I cant say that linux is user friendly for those who had no experince with it or that it is any better then windows or anything like that.I agree. The larger versions of Linux are pretty user friendly once you get them going (I speak of my limited experience using Suse and Ubuntu). Once I got Ubuntu "tweaked" it was very easy to USE, but it took trusting the input of folks on the Ubuntu forum who instucted what files to access, and lines of code to edit into the files. (This was for a particular laptop I once had which needed some driver help, etc.)Is there a way that I can INSTALL it and can switch back to Vista whenever I want with all my apps still there?Depending on the space available on your drive, you can install a dual-boot configuration, which allows you to CHOOSE the operating system to which you want the computer to boot.Is there a tutorial for that on here?Just to clarify, you want a dual boot between Vista, which is already on the system, and Ubuntu Linux?all he has to do is then install linux I think or linux then vistaYes Aegis.OK, hang with me, and we'll see what we can find.

How much space do you have on the hard drive?

HERE is a nice guide for installing Ubuntu 9.04 onto a system which already has Vista. It will dual boot with GRUB, the GRand Unified Bootloader. I think Ubuntu will be in control, with the ability to boot to Vista. If you want Vista to "lead," there are tweaks you can follow.

See what you think. Let us know if you have questions.

Ok, I am going to try this now.I've got a laptop on which I might try to dual boot XP and Ubuntu, just to see what it is like.

Let us know how it GOES for you!I hope that isnt your MAIN one but whatever works. I just would put it on a secondary one in case something went wrong.

Solve : Can't insall gnomelook.org screenlets.?

Answer»

I am using Ubuntu Jaunty JACKALOPE, and I have a problem with screenlets. I downloaded some screenlets from gnomelook.org The screenlet-manager says it installed the new screenlets to Quote

~/daniel/screenlets
, and they are there

The problem is that only the screenlets in Quote
/usr/share/screenlets
show up below the separator in the screenlet daemon > launch screenlet > screenlet list. The ones in Quote
~/daniel/screenlets
are above the separator and will not launch. I have to GO to my Quote
~/daniel/screenlets/*
(the ASTERISK being a screenlet folder) and double click the .PY file to launch.

So if I get some screenlets from "Gnomelook.org" how do I get them to install and launch. The instructions that are on the D/L page for a given screenlet are usually, "Put the file in your screenlets folder and run from there" which isn't too helpfull. None of the screenlets have a .CONFIG file, so I don't know how to install them from terminal either.

Sorry for all the quotes, but it is more readable that way.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
