Solve : Excel will not start?

Answer»

When I try to start Excel, the message "Excel has caused an error in MS09.dll" appears. I have run repair, reloaded Office 2000 Small Business, and attempted these suggestions: rename ms09.dll (not found), delete all *.xlb files (none found), REMOVE 'FindFast' from Startup (not there). The OS is Windows ME. I wanted to set up Outlook as well, but got the same message. Any suggestions?
Thanks, DoogsterThis is because the file MSO9.dll (that's an O for Oscar, not zero) is faulty. Microsoft says to rename the file 'just in case' and use Add/remove programs to repair Office 2000 (the uninstaller has a repair option). or try scanreg/restore COMMAND after the the m$do$ prompt and pick the last good cab file..Doogster.......perhaps given your problems , you might WANT to CONSIDER formatting your hard drive and doing a clean install.......in the LONG run it may be the best fix.

Solve : edit outlook contact feilds?

Answer»

I'm having trouble editing the contact feilds in MS Outlook. Our staff uses personal Cell Phones and company Cell phones, and I want to add a 5th field on the General Tab where the PHONE numbers are listed.

I have ADDED a field to the user defined fields, but I can't manage to 'see' that from the TABS, including the all fields tab.

Solve : Microsoft Office 365?

Answer»

I purchased 0ffice 365 a while back and used it for several YEARS. I then let it expire because I thought I could replace it with Libre Office. it's been QUITE a while now SINCE it expired and my wife has complained that things aren't working well on her computer with Libre. As a matter of fact, I don't much care for it either and I don't do 1/10 of the stuff the wife does.

My question is, I purchased a card with McAfee and 365 on it (Family version) and wondered if there would be a problem to uninstall the old version before installing the ONE recently purchased or is it not necessary?. My OS is Windows 10 version 21H1.Oh well; I need to get this done today for the wife, so *censored* the torpedos and full speed ahead. You are better un installing any earlier versions of office you can leave libra office on the computer.
I hope you have checked the on going subscription for 365. ALSO I wouldn't load McAfee's. Thanks Lisa_maree, I contemplated not installing MacAfee from all of the negative comments about it on here. I've been using Windows Defender which is supposed to be improved and Malwarebytes. Thanks again for you response.

Solve : Way to find, cut and paste multiple cells in Excel?

Answer»

hey there, I have this job that requires taking in inventory in the following manner and really want to know if there is a better way of doing this.

We take down the product ID of each item when loaded at the docks and have to verify what is coming in with a master excel sheet that we have. As each product is 'called' in I enter into my own excel sheet to be verified with the master sheet soon after. It is not done at the same time as it takes too long to FIND cut paste from Master. Basically moving cells from Worksheet 1 (all items at dock) to Worksheet 2 (in warehouse)

For example, drivers CALLS in with 10 items, I then manually enter the ID#s of each into excel, I then open up the Master sheet and have to copy value from my LIST, find in master list, then cut and paste to another tab showing we have it moved. So we then know what is remaining.

I am trying to see if there is a better way as this gets quite repetitive with over 1000 items to account for. I am basically entering into excel, then copy each cell individually, highlight another worksheet to find, cut and paste...on repeat. I dont know if there is way to copy multiple values from one sheet and remove those values from another sheet to another tab?

This sounds confusing as i read it, but hope it makes sense lol

Microsoft® Excel® 2019 MSO (Version 2111 Build 16.0.14701.20254) 64-bit
Windows 10

It should be a rather trivial task to be handled by a macro, would need to know the structure of the involved sheets and what exactly needs to be copied over.

Do you know anyone that knows VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) which is the macro language used by MS Office?

Solve : Text problem with Photoscape?

Answer»

If I press ctrl and use my mouse scroll it works fine on here, but I open Photoscape and it will not, the print is so small I need a magnifying glass to read it, I also have solitaire with the same problem. Is there a way to fix this? Settings increase, font size, increase all etc does not work. The magnify option is also no good. I am not sure if this is the right section to PLACE this request, Please advise if not. I look forward for your help. Thanks. Why doesn't the magnify option work? It is specifically in there to help people with vision problems ENLARGE things to be able to see better. Another option MIGHT be to use the screen reader function.

The Ctrl-Mousewheel ability is something built-in to your browser so it only works when you are viewing a web page. Thanks for your input, the magnifier only enlarges a small part of the screen, I need the whole screen enlarged, keeping the perspective, It is hard to understand why this is only happening to the two pages I mentioned, seems like the opposite to shrink to fit. I have tried REINSTALLING Photoscape, that did not work and despite many emails to their support team, they do not reply. Over to you.I originally posted this in the open section, perhaps this is better, my photoscape v3'7 page has very small text, barely readable, I have reinstalled it to no avail, nothing I do will make any difference and the emails I send to their support team are ignored. The problem does not affect other websites. any help is greatly appreciated.I merged the two topics. Magnifying glass like the one Sherlock Homes used, that's what I use. I tried the ALT + !! and nothing happens regarding the size. but at the top right of the screen, there is a blue value line with the number 100, so I take it this is the size LIMIT, is this correct?

Solve : Data recovery formatted external drive?

Answer»

I accidentally FORMATTED an external hard drive. I immediately disconnected it from my computer so nothing has been saved onto it since the mishap.
I have found many software programs out there but I just don't know which one to use.
Can you give me SUGGESTIONS for a good 1x use program?
The others I'd found want you to pay monthly, annually etc. I just need help this one time.
I did use Disk Drill but I am missing some files still, after it did the scan.
Thank you.Was it a full format? If so, as I understand it a full format on Windows Vista and later will wipe the files: https://www.partitionwizard.com/disk-recovery/quick-format-vs-full-format.html#:~:text=In%20Windows%20with,magnetism%20on%20disk

Having said that, you can try something like Recuva and see what happens: https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva Thanks for responding but as I mentioned I was able to recover some of the files but the program that I used did not recover all. These programs, like Recuva which has poor reviews, all want you to pay monthly, annually etc. If anyone has used another program themselves, or knows someone who has that worked well for them, please let me know. The files that were not recovered were files used in Camtasia that are specific to their program. Thanks.Recuva has a free version.Okay never mind. I will figure it out myself. This used to be a great resource for me but you don't read my posts, so I will find help someplace else. Recuva has bad reviews, as I'd mentioned earlier and when I tried it, it kept quitting "unexpectedly".
I'd asked for a response from someone that has used a program that they recommended or heard from someone that used it, was good. I can google and get the type of information that you responded with.
Have a nice day.I'm sorry you're not happy with my response - truly. But I've been using Recuva for many years and have always been very happy with it - as has everyone to whom I've recommended it. Having said that, I never tried it myself on a formatted disc.Your refund check is in the mail...A lot of software has bad reviews. Recuva in particular gets bad reviews because Piriform, the company that publishes/develops it, also makes CCleaner which has been caught doing a number of shady things. That distrust naturally spills over to their other products.

Recovering a formatted drive is a bit more involved than just searching for deleted files. I don't think this isn't something that anybody is going to do reliably with some off-the-shelf software solution.

The main issue is that formatting a drive overwrites the existing File Table information with a "fresh copy". Whatever it overwrote is now gone, excepting advanced data forensics. This means that, for the most part, recovery is going to get back the files- but you won't be able to get the filenames.

Now, that said, If I had a drive I'd accidentally formatted that I wanted to recover, the first thing I would probably try is TestDisk. This is open source software, and doesn't try to charge you or have any sort of trial nonsense.

Speaking of reviews, Disk Drill appears to have some particularly bad reviews, With many USERS saying that it finds "fake" files that never EXISTED on the drive, or finds "random" files and purports to recover them, but they are gibberish.

I've decided to check it out, and ran it on a Virtual machine and was surprised it was able to find hundreds of deleted photos, given I've never put photos on the VM. Naturally, attempting to recover them requires purchasing the product, I suspect this may very well be scamware. I wouldn't trust it based onm what I've seen alone. There are lots of products that attempt to prey on desperate people searching for a way to undelete files or unformat their hard drives, unfortunately, and this approach where it shows you all sorts of files is done because hopeful users will see the photos, or documents, or whatever files and zero in on that and go "ah ha! Those must be the precious photos I lost!/My TPS reports/My pictures of bears with no clothes on/etc."

I suspect they've FLOODED review sites with positive reviews in some manner. Some of the 5-star reviews don't make much sense. This one was my favourite:

Solve : Multiple System Crashes?

Answer»

Recently, I had a new SSD hard drive installed. It is much faster than my old mechanical drive, but my old drive was 2 TB. I had to SAVE my content to an eternal hard drive and planned to put the files back on my PC later. The problem is that as I copied files, my pc would CRASH. A report to Windows would be generated and the process of checking and repairing the pc began. In most of these attempts to recover, my pc could not because of bad sectors. I even tried just resetting the pc, but that did not WORK either. In all cases, I finally had to reformat the disk and reinstall windows from a USB boot drive and start all over again w/o savings IDs and passwords, etc. The system would always crash when I tried to copy a certain large file, 57.6 GB, back to the PC. The smaller files copied easily. I cannot break down this file as it is a video file and the movies on it have operational files to run the movies and so must be kept together.
I am just curious as to why Windows crashes when I TRY to copy these files? Likewise, I am a bit afraid to start copying files again until I learn more. I have attached my system information.
Cordially Yours, Dave

Solve : Airbrushing, etc.?

Answer»

Well, being that I am new, I made my thread in the wrong section , veryy embarassing I must say.

But, back to the point, I was wondering if ANYONE knew how to airbrush a picture, touch-ups, clearing the background, fuzz, red EYES, etc; via Adobe Photoshop.
Please get back ASAP if you know of anywhere I can get help with this. Thanks a bunch!

Rosie_LRosie_L........Photoshop , will do all that you describe and then some.......I use it all the time to touch up and modify . The biggest thing with photoshop is you have to play with it and learn what all the fuctions are. I don't know what version you have .....I have V.7 .......but they all work pretty much the same way ........play with it ......try USING the eraser . change the sizes . then play with the magic wand and the clone stamp . Its an awsesome prog ......when you learn to use it . If you have a specific question , I will try and answer it for you.

Solve : Free Phone Number Software?

Answer»

This is about software applicants that let you get a free phone number and may calls using the internet.
Here are a few:
Burner app
Google Voice
FreedomPop
TextNow

Your can search for t these in Bing of Google. Or even DuckDuckGo.
Here is one of may things about this idea:
https://freshdiscover.com/a/search.php?q=Free+Phone+Number

Is it really free? You DECIDE. Either you get a bunch of ads or you pay a fee.

Here is a serious article:
https://www.forbes.com/advisor/business/services/free-business-phone-number/
Quote

Even if you’re planning to build a higher-volume business in the future, starting with cost-saving measures can keep your INITIAL fees lower and allow GROWTH to be easier. And it can be helpful to have a dedicated number for business use so that your important work calls do not get mixed in with numbers from friends and family on your personal line.

I might add that can be a good thing for personal REASONS also.

Solve : Phrase Express requires restarts for no apparent reason?

Answer»

I use the free version of PHRASE Express, which until recently worked without a hitch--even when I used an outdated version. For some time now, however, it has stopped working frequently, usually at least once a DAY. When it stops I must exit the program and restart it. Before doing that if I examine the interface I can see no hint that it won't work. How can I fix this?If its the data you are looking for, this might do it. However, if its your account details for something else, I dont think a password-less entry will get you ANYWHERE. You can try contacting GOOGLE tho, let them know the rut you're in.Thanks for ANSWERING, Karl, but I can't understand your suggestions. "If its the data you are looking for, this might do it." What might do it? "You can try contacting Google." Google has no connection with this issue, which is the operation of an independent application (Phrase Express). And I guess you don't know that contacting Google for help (if you're not a paying customer) is impossible.

Solve : AOL only available?

Answer»

we have 2 computers in the house, my BROTHER's (who he makes sure no one touches) and the living room computer (EVERYONE else uses). We have DSL which is mainly connected to my brother's computer since he's the materialistic techie.

Recently, the living room computer's internet connection didn't work, which CREATED many problems. After my mom used some of her parental powers to make my brother fix it, the internet connection is back online. Drawback is that I can only connect to AOL and AIM if I am on AOL at the same time and nothing else---no Mozilla, no Internet Explorer, and no...um... music engines.

Anyone know what's wrong and what a person with hardly any knowledge of computer hardware can do?

By the way, the computer techi could care less of the family's computer problems. Getting help from him is pretty close to impossible.your bother may have blocked website by USING a firewall and have you got radmin on your pc?how is the net wired up? does it GO to brothers pc first?why not make a new connection and disconnect your brothers pc from the phone?

Solve : Regular backups?

Answer»

I've been doing regular backups of my computer for quite some time. My question is how do we know our backups really work? Is there any method to test these backups? Trying to run a backup after your computer crashes is not the time to realize that the backup is no good. For my backups I use XCOPY /s/d/y/h/v and the /v switch with Verify On. Never lost any data from failed writes this way. I also have my Google Drive SET up to sync with my cloud storage.
The cloud storage is mainly so that if there was ever a fire I would still have my data, however the data backed up is whats current to the C: drive of the system and if a file was messed up somehow its going to sync and send that messed up file to the cloud.

I have 5 USB sticks that are 64GB in size and have rolling backups where I run the xcopy on them to compare contents on the USB thumb drive with the Data folder of the C: drive and files that changed or new files created since last backup are copied to the USB stick. USB sticks are labelled D1,D2,D3,D4,and D5 and when D5 has been used and I need to run the 6th backup, I insert D1 and back it up and back through the process of using 2,3,4,5 on the next backups in that order. If for some reason anything is messed up... which is usually operator error, I can restore the file from YESTERDAY or 4 days prior. Such as once I was half awake making changes to my worksheet in excel and hit ALT F S to save my work and the next day I opened up the worksheet and was like OMG this is so messed up what was I thinking when half awake and so I got a copy of it from the backup the day prior to restore to the Data location of the C: drive and pick up where I left off doing it all correctly this time.

In addition to this I also have 4 USB sticks for weekly backups labelled W1, W2, W3, and W4 and so EVERY Friday when done I backup the data to that. This then gives me more depth of going back to earlier states of data as I have a month of data backed up. Rarely do I ever have to refer to this backup but its saved me before when something was altered and saved, and then more than a week went by before going back to it and noticing that there was a problem.

With these weekly backups I also connect my 4TB external HDD and it first copies the old contents from the USB stick that is to be overwritten with current data to an Archive folder on the 4TB external HDD with today's date. Then when that is complete it then runs the xcopy /s/d/y/h/v to that weekly backup USB stick. And so on Fridays there is a Daily and Weekly backup completed where say D1 and W1 have the same data contained on them and the 4TB external HDD copies data from a month ago to it prior to that weekly USB stick populated with current data.

If your backup's are system images that you want to make sure they are healthy, what I use is Macrium Reflect and I clone my PRIMARY Hard Drive to Secondary Hard Drive. I then unplug power and data cables from the primary hard drive and boot the freshly cloned secondary and use that drive as my active drive. Then a month later or after any major changes to system that all is running well with the changes i will connect the primary hard drive and clone the secondary to the primary and then disconnect the secondary drive and run on the primary drive knowing that the prior drive was healthy when used to clone and when last used prior to shutdown and disconnect. *I also keep a 3rd drive of the initial system build clean state and place this into an ESD bag and let it rest on the bottom of the inside of the case. This way if I need to bring the system up to a clean state and dont want to reinstall Windows and drivers I can use this drive to roll back to the beginning of the build. This I have used when the system STARTS to get slow from software/games that was added/removed and its not running optimal I can bring the system back to a fast operating state, then perform windows updates and install whatever games and software I want to run and have far less lag.

All good information, Dave but I wish there was some way to verify that one has a good backup instead of finding out when the computer crashes that the backup is no good. I use the backup program that came with the ext. HD but I have used Reflect previous.Macrium Reflect has a verify feature that verifies the image is not corrupted. And of course you can mount the image and see the data is there. Most other backup software has the ability to verify. If it doesn't I would question the veracity of it's claim of being backup software.

Solve : Tracking Programs????

Answer»

Our cmputers at home are maintained by my brother's computer and handywork. I didn't care unil I found out he invades our PRIVACY and tracks what we (look at, do, type, etc.) and knows everything about what we do online. IS it actually possible to do that or is it just a lie? If it's true is there a way to somehow stop it or prevent the program from tracking?

Bob....Yes .....it is possible to track one's activities on a computer.....In fact many programs ie MESSENGER and that sort of app. generates a log of every keystroke that is taken when using that program. There are also
Spy type of programs that can be installled to KEEP track of computer activities......So BEWARE..........

Hope this answers your question.

dl65 It is very possible, I do it all the time at work (of course I don't like to do it but I'm a sysadmin and it's part of my job). The easiest way to snoop is to look at your cookies or tempfiles. There are 'keyloggers' which will snoop and record your every keystroke. I can even actively watch what a user is doing anywhere in our COMPANY and they wouldn't know (we paid a LOT of money for the program called Zenworks).

The best way to prevent it is to do your own maintenence. I'd format your drive and start fresh since it's impossible to know for sure what is on your system.

Get an antivirus app and some of the many spyware programs out there. Scan yourself.and just to add to this get yourself a firewall like sygate. most keyloggers may use radmin?remote access?

Solve : Burnaware professional.?

Answer»

Hello pals I have a problem in Burnaware Professional software, it does not
successfully burn Data Disc or I should say the datadisc.exe is having some problem. It hang at the compilation
stage. I tried to download from other source and all having the same problem. This software is OK earlier but now it gives error like there is no disc in the drive although the DVD disc was there. My OS. Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 32 bit. I do hope someone can HELP.
Thanks. If able to burn data to a disc with another tool such as Windows built in disc burner you can determine if its the optical drive or that software.

Quote

Creating a data CD in Windows 7:

Insert a blank CD or DVD into the disk drive.
From the Start menu, open Computer.
Navigate to and select the files you want to put on the CD. On the blue bar at the top of Windows Explorer, click Burn.
Name the disc, and then click Next. The files will begin to write to the disc.

If your able to successfully burn data to a disc with the built in disc burn tool of Windows 7 you then will know that the optical drive is healthy and its an issue with that software. If you run into same issues with the built in disc burning utility of Windows 7 then you likely have a failed optical drive and will need to replace it or clean it of dust and try again. Thanks for your prompt reply. I can burn with other software but not with burnaware but it was OK earlier. Any further help will be much appreciated.Next step would be probably to contact the Support Desk for Burnaware to see what they can ADVISE. Your burner being able to burn discs with other burning software points to an issue with the Burnaware that they might know RIGHT off how to help you fix it. This link has a form to submit for help. https://www.burnaware.com/support.htmlThanks for your prompt reply. I did wrote to them about the problem, they ask me to try burning a disc with other modules in the main page. I could create or burn an ISO image. Yes they are helpful at first but later until they sent me a new version 15.3 which was not YET on sale for try. With the new version they sent I try out and see whether the problem solve or not, unfortunately this version could not perform what the old version could. I wrote to them about the problem. From that day no response from them till today. I am puzzle what went wrong as v14.8 I could burn and all WORK without an problem. Well I keep my finger cross hope someone can help.

Solve : .mp4 to DVD software ???

Answer»

Anyone KNOW of a FREE version of software to convert a .mp4 file to a DVD? I only have one movie and so, no need to pay for a program to do so. I tried Wondeshare DVD Creator but, their "trial" version leaves a "WATERMARK" of their logo in the middle of the screen throughout the movie. Hope this request isn't against any policies or group rules. Can try WinX DVD Author. Have used it before, was FINE and I got acceptable quality out of it.

There is an option ALLOWING you to create the dvd folder/files, menu and burn to disc in one go. The other options are to do the same THREE steps but independently if you wish to not do all at once.

Can upgrade to pro version but free may be enough for your purpose. Good Luck.

IBWQGolly Gee I hate it when administrators prevent PEOPLE from enjoying themselves. *much sarcasm intended*

Your admin is probably not a cruel person nor is he/she punishing you personally (or maybe you are being punished which is more to your shame).

If you don't like University policy maybe you should find another institution. You could also ask your SYSADMIN to grant you access but I doubt that WOULD work.

Solve : hard drive always busy?

Answer»

hi guys, i'm new to thsi forum but i really need help with my computer. OK i just built my computer about 1 MONTH ago and it has had no problems until like 3 days ago. every now and then the hard drive woudl start to "think" without me executing any programs. i'd check my Asus Probe and it would say that 99% of my RAM is being used EVEN though i have no programs running, but the hard drive light is on (i know for a fact the RAM is being used for something because everything is really slow). when i would try to restart then Windows would say it's stoppign a program called ccApp, which i looked up was a Norton Antivirus 2003/2004 prog. so i uninstalled that and my Sygate firewall, but the problem persists. my pc would go through this hard drive ""thinking" thing about once every 10 minutes or so and it's getting really annoying. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanx in advance guys.

my pc for reference:
Asus A7N8X-X with Athlon XP 3000
512 MB Corsair DDR RAM
120 GB Western Digi hard drive
ATI/Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT 128 MB
Windows XP Pro SP1
Andrew....You can call up your task manager by pressing control/alt./delete and then press task manager......if the culperate is ccApp......go to

Solve : The Definitive Best Anti Virus Thread?

Answer»

Okay, this question just comes up so often that I, for one, am tired of seeing it .So maybe we can try this: everyone who wants to give his or her opinion please do so here. Let's not argue about anything or question anyone else's choice, let's just state our PREFERENCES so those who want to READ differing opinions can do so here. If you have very strong feelings about other programs (good or bad) go ahead and express them. Then when the question comes up in the future we can just point to this thread. One post per person should probably suffice (okay, wishful thinking ).

I'll start. I like Kaspersky Anti Virus. I've been using it for about 6 years. All new versions are free as long as you maintain your yearly license. Definitions are updated several times a day. It's always active and I also use it to scan incoming email. I use MalwareyBytes & SpywareBlaster for monthly on-demand scanning (neither remains resident) along with SpywareBlaster (updated weekly) to block known malicious sites. WinPatrol Plus is also resident on most of my systems. I can honestly say I've never had a virus on any system - and I started using PC's in 1985 and have owned and/or been responsible for scores of systems since then.

Now for what is probably a controversial comment - NOTE: this is strictly my personal opinion..... I know there are a few good free AV's, but I simply have never been thrilled with any (thought admittedly, it has been a number of years since I evaluated them). I realize this is a minority VIEW, but I simply feel that anti virus protection is the single most important app you can have on your system and I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. I would never consider skimping on AV software. If you can afford $50 for the latest computer game you can certainly afford $30/year to protect your system. Having said that, Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast seem to be among the best free choices and LOTS of folks are very happy with them.

I don't use third party firewalls, but my systems are always "behind" a router that uses NAT. I do keep the built-in Windows firewalls active at all times. While the XP version offered no incoming protection, later versions do.

It should go without saying that the most important preventative is "smart computing" (never open an email attachment unless you are 100% certain you know what it is, don't click on links unless you KNOW where they go, don't download anything from the web unless you absolutely know it is safe, avoid all forms of pirated sw and warez, etc.).

Okay, that's my 4 cents . Please post your protection scheme.Heh, good idea... I doubt it will stop people from posting polls every three weeks on the subject, but at least we'll have a sticky to point them to when we try to tactfully tell them to STFU

Myself, I don't, personally, use a "On-demand" or background scanner. I do have tools such as MBAM and the like installed which I will run when I notice odd processes in task manager, svchost hogging resources, or general "odd" behaviour from my system. I've never felt it was worth the processing overhead; The task of AV scanning takes time, and having it occur on nearly every file access is a rather hefty price. And of course, even the best AV application isn't going to catch everything, so you need to be cautious anyway, means that, for me, I'm actually safer when I don't have an AV installed.

When I did have one installed (after a nasty Virut infection on Windows XP to keep me from reinfecting the system using existing executables on my data drive) I actually found that a lot of activity I found suspicious and thought "oh no, I'm reinfected" could be traced to the AV. While their purposes are far more noble and good, I'm sort of felt that AV software is sort of like "fighting fire with fire"; rather than a Virus or malware building a huge root system in your machine, the AV software does. That's why they all seem to need special software to fully remove. That, and a lot of the systems I've fixed for others that they blamed on "Viruses" were in fact caused by the Anti-virus software they were using, which if you ask me is utterly unacceptable. (I'll say I've only seen those issues with one or two "Free" offerings, Mcaffee, and older versions of Norton, though.

Basically, my "protection" amounts to healthy cynicism. Almost all malware infections these days are trojans. So few INFECT a system by way of things like exploits and "drive-by" stuff that it's hardly worth the effort to waste time thinking about. More importantly, the first line of defense even for those is the same. After all, in order to download a trojan you need to trust a website, and in order to visit a web page, you need to trust the link. Typically, when dealing with an unfamiliar executable, I'll just run it. (unless it has a blatantly suspicious name). I might run process explorer and keep track of what the program does as well to make sure there is no funny business. I usually have that running in the background anyway. If the program requests administrator permission- it doesn't get it. Not at first. This has prevented a good lot of "infections" if you ask me, since you can't well infect a machine without administrator permissions. Naturally, software installers do need those permissions so depending on the software I will allow. Or, if I'm in a forgiving mood I might just say yes and deal with whatever happens later. When I am infected, I usually catch on rather quickly and am able to either kill the malware processes, or, if they are the type where they autorespawn each other, suspend all the suspicious processes and kill them all at once. Visit regedit and delete the offending entries (generally in the Run key), reboot, and typically everything is back to the way it was. In 7-8 years I was only infected once, and since moving to Vista/7, I've had hardly any problems.

An important Note: Typically, "manual" Virus removal is not something that just anybody does. It really requires a intimate knowledge of how Windows software works, the PE file format, and of course a willingness to "get your hands dirty". At the same time, it really is only an extension of what you should do even when you have a AV installed- keeping a system clean requires constant vigilance and you need to constantly be assessing what possible security repurcussions your actions could have. "Does this application REALLY need admin permissions?" type stuff.

BC's tips for AV-free operation:

Sometimes your applications will crash; this is pretty much inevitable. Sometimes you'll need to run Task Manager for various reasons. While there, glance over the processes. Again, this requires a familiarity with the type and number of processes you would typically see running on your machine, so it's useless unless you are familiar both with your operating system of choice as well as your "normal" software configuration. Things like rundll32.exe showing up in there out of nowhere will make me reach for Process Explorer, where I can determine the "threat" posed by that process.

As I type this, my desktop machine does in fact have a rundll32.exe process running. Which piqued my curiousity. You can use the "Select columns" menu in the view menu of Windows Task Manager to enable columns such as "command line" which can give additional information on the process. you can also use various features of Process Explorer for that same task, or further investigation of a suspicious process, such as examining it's in-memory layout, stack frames, loaded Libraries, etc. in the case of this particular rundll32.exe, it turns out to be used to launch a function called "GameUXShim" in C:\Windows\System32' gameux.dll, which according to it's description, is "Games Explorer". the parameters, and function name, passed make it clear this is designed to "Shim" an older game to work in the newer Windows 7 environment. Again, familiarity with the Windows System helps here, the compatibility settings provided by the windows shell itself pale in comparison to what is actually provided "under the hood" which involves a massive network of shims, compatibility hooks, and databases on the sorts of the two needed for various games and older applications that were, for lack of a better word, written badly. In this case, it seems to be for "Halo.exe" the executable for the popular Halo game, which I bought and never played hardly until yesterday where I played for 5 minutes and got stuck. Knowing that I played the game, and was no longer, I can safely terminate this process and know it wasn't malicious, and is required for proper gameplay. Same for a variety of other older games I have.

Obviously, this isn't for people that just want to "do work" on their computer; it's more useful for people who want to learn about how it works. The ultimate result is that I've saved who knows how much on AV software, I've saved time that would be spent running that AV software, and over time I've learned enough about machines to become the "go to fixer person" of several people who are willing to pay for my services, so it's a rather good result. Of course I don't try to make them run without an AV, in fact I try to dissuade them; they will often ask "well what AV do you use" and I have to answer that I don't use one. Some of them will get the idea that if I (somebody who's understanding of the machine they have come to respect) doesn't use one, then they don't need to either. Then I have to try to explain that an AV solution is only as good as it's user, without telling them "you keep getting infected because your stupid, not because your AV sucks". Usually I can get them to understand, and even if I don't, I have a machine I often use to show them how I would clean a machine (using the above steps) by infecting it and running through the process, which involves process explorer ,suspending processes, recovery console. If they don't know how to do all those things (and if they did, they wouldn't be coming to me for help in the first place) than they are going to need to choose an AV product and learn how to use it. That second part is critical, I think.

More critical that what AV a person uses is learning how to use that AV software effectively. You can't just install an AV and forget about it; they each have their own nuances and settings that you should configure to your unique usage scenario. Learning what causes their various "popups" to appear warning you about things and how severe they are is important, particularly since the way a lot of AV suites present their messages is using skinned messages and gaudy pop-ups with stupid images that depict "virus infections" or other images that are wholly unimportant. Installing an AV and blindly following it's advice and getting all worked up because it says it quarantined something merely feeds the ignorance, it doesn't absolve it. It just adds confusing terms. "Quarantine" for example, is just a silly term in a software environment. All it amounts it is a backup folder where the files are moved to. Why? Because AV software has false positives, so it moves it there so that if it turns out that "woops that wasn't infected" it can be moved back. It's sort of like the equivalent of a society where, if anybody is identified as "sick", they are euthanised. (a bit harsh but that's essentially the analogy as far as software goes). For "cleaning" and disinfecting files, basically at this point the analogy would be that they can cure your cold, but they will have to rip off all your limbs and cut off your ears. (the resulting program very rarely still works as it used to and you need to reinstall anyway). In such a scenario, false positives could be disasterous. Instead of just having a call to your house telling you that your test results were wrong and you don't actually have the flu, the docor would have to interrupt your funeral to say "oh, yeah turns out he wasn't sick". As such AV software does what might be done in such a scenario: instead of outright deleting/killing the victims, it moves them to a special holding area, where they are forgotten about and usually deleted anyway, but at least that way if the doctors/AV software balls up they can just release them back into society. This only outlines that AV software is far from perfect. using medical terminology like "quarantine" and "virus" and "heal" and "infection" only serves to confuse the issue, since it actually makes people think that the entire area of malware removal is a "profession" like your standard medicine on which the analogies are based. It's not. At this point, Anti-Virus software as a "medical" field is about the equivalent of when we would drill holes in peoples HEAD to release their inner demons. That isn't to say it's useless, just that a lot of what it does is a tad drastic.I've found that McAfee works very well, I've used it for a year and haven't had any issues with it, the price is reasonable, and you do get your moneys worth. Not many people agree!

I use MSE on my laptop and Avast on my desktop, but will probably switch to MSE when it starts nagging me to re-register.i use the virgin security suite which works well enough for me the only down point is that it does load up very slowly, i do believe now the new virgin security is now from trend micro ( if thats how you spell it ) but it will not update on my pc probaly because i have malware bytes on my pc, but i am happy with the security as it standsAVG works well for me. Been using it for years now. It's better than Norton. For paid I will only use ESET NOD32 Smart Security, works better than anything else I have tried, for free I just use MSE.I personally use Avast! Free (disabled when gaming) and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Pro ( $9 licence from Trial Pay )

They both stop anything that comes my way if it is malicious and never conflict/cause huge slowdowns when accessing data.

If I had to pick a paid product, ESET Smart Security would be my pick, we use it in the workshop and it is great.I have been running Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes in tandem on many computers for years. I generally install these on client computers unless they already have paid versions of something else (Norton, Mcaffee, etc...). I also like to use Ad-aware. All of these are free and I NEVER get any trojans or viruses.I think AVG antivirus is best antivirus i ever used. The best thing is this is free software. But keep this antivirus is always updated. At home, I use Microsoft Security Essentials.
At work, we use Symantec Endpoint Protection and Kaspersky.

A couple years ago, I got a virus on my flash drive that SEP and MSE would clean up after plugging it into either of two PCs with Avira and AVG on it.
Kaspersky didn't notice it, but the pc with it installed never got infected either, so....
THIS WILL BE SHORT,TO ME THE VERY BEST A.V IS PANDA CLOUD FREE,INSTALL AND FORGET. THANKS.It seems it however has broken your capslock button though...no matter how good you feel it is.Why would I want to install something that makes me forget? Another vote for AVG from me. I've used it for years now, left it sometimes but I've always returned. Currently using ~25Mb of RAM... No idea if that's good or bad for an AV program.

Pros:
- Least spam I've ever found from a free product
- Thorough & up to date
- Easy to install
- Does not worm it's way onto your computer through 3rd party software & demand that you must buy it before you may ever feel safe again. (A big selling point to me)

Cons:
- Cannot disable easily (for gaming)
- False positives fairly frequent (less so recently)
- Does not recognise Norton & McAfee as adware

Saying that:

"AVG – AVG used to be a great program, several years ago. Starting with version 9 it’s been getting worse and worse as they try to do too much. It slows down your computer, making it almost unusable during virus scans. It has one of the worst ratings for speed performance, especially that of scanning for viruses. It currently has a very poor detection/protection rate and lets more infection into your computer than several top antivirus solutions combined. It does a barely mediocre job of detecting threats it doesn’t know about. It’s ratings have been dropping rapidly. Even for free it should be avoided." http://www.npinc.ca/tag/antivirus/

Oh dear, AVG made the list of worst AV programs.

Well I think that we can agree that vigilance and experience are the best ways to avoid virus's, I've got a long blank event history and an empty virus vault so I'm obviously doing something right.

According to Microsoft, you just need minimum 2GB of memory to run 64 bit windows 7. But since that is just the minimum, I would just be sticking to win 7 32 bit you already have.

You also MIGHT want to Uncheck "Don't Download Pictures Automatically", but that's up to you.

I believe that will do it, but look around in trust center to see if there is anything else related.Has Outlook 2007 always behaved this way for you? I don't believe that behavior reflects default settings after a fresh installation of Outlook/Office.

Solve : Outlook Express 6 Outgoing Mail stays in Outbox & Error Code Displays?

Answer» WITHIN the last 2 days, whenever I send an email (with or without attachments), I get an error message with no details, and the email stays in my Outbox and does not delete once sent, but the email does get sent. I ran both my virus scan & spyware scan, & both came up with no bugs. However, within the last few days, I did install & run a registry cleanup program, and it appears that this problem BEGAN after I ran the registry cleanup program. Running IE7 Windows XP Professional PC.Do you have a RESTORE Point from a date before this problem started? If so, I suggest you use it to restore to that date.

Has OE been prompting you to compact messages? If so, did you allow it to compact?

By the way, what registry cleaner did you use?various solutions if you google it...BUT try this....

Find the file called *Sent Items.mbx* and rename it to something like *Sent Items.bak*

Restart Outlook EXPRESS. You will then see a new, empty sent items folder.I did find the Sent Items.dbx folder & made a copy for my desktop & inserted into a folder, and then deleted it, which solved the problem. When I restarted OE the program CREATED a new emplty sent items folder, but I would like to import back my saved sent items folder, as I need some of the messages stored there...only problem now is that the OE import feature will not work with this file. I get an error message that stated the folder does not contain the message file, or this folder is being used by another application. I checked the folder I created on my desktop & it does contain the Sent Items file, and don't know what other application would be using this file.so the copy you made is a shortcut to the file you deleted???I don't think it's a shortcut; it shows as 1.9 GB in size, and I did just a copy & paste into a folder on my desktop before I deleted.

No. You don't need to worry about any registry tools whatsoever. Here is why: http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/registry-cleaners-and-system-tweaking_13.htmlseeing as registry cleaners are not recommended, where did the very first registry cleaner even come from?Quote from: 2x3i5x on June 11, 2010, 01:23:39 PM

seeing as registry cleaners are not recommended, where did the very first registry cleaner even come from?

From someone who realized that the average pc user knows very little about the registry and has been advised to be very careful in altering/amending the registry contents. The opportunity to make a buck was too hard to ignore hence the PLETHORA of registry "cleaners" which are offered for sale but do absolutely nothing to improve the performance of any pc, and may damage the registry possibly beyond repair, the result of which is that registry cleaners have a well-earned don't-go-near status.

Having said that I must ADMIT to have run a couple of registry things, one named as a Registry Optimizer which comes with the well-respected Erunt registry backup PROGRAM and the other simply named Registry which is PART of the renowned CCleaner. I have not been able to measure any improvement in performance following their execution.

All i can add to the conversation is if you use Registry Mechanic you will become a familiar FACE around here...

plz help a poor manHi there...

A more simple solution may be AVAILABLE to you.

Do you use Firefox? if you do I recommend you uninstall your 'free download manager' and that you get an addon for firefox called 'DownThemAll!'

http://www.downthemall.net/

This works directly inside Firefox and I use it all the time because it gives me all the things i need in a download manager, and it is very lightweight.

if you aren't using firefox, give it a try and see for yourself.

Kurtis+1 for DownloadThemAll!. IIRC, it also lets you download embedded videos, which is a very nice feature to have.Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling FDM?Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling File Download Manager?

What's the point of your brilliant first post?First, the OP never said what browser he is using. IE is probably a good guess, but what version? And is it supported by his download manager program?

BTW, I use Firefox and it's download manager works fine.Quote from: rthompson80819 on June 13, 2010, 03:34:17 PM

He or she is using Free Download Manager which is compatible with both IE and Firefox (and stand-alone).I thing your Download Manager is not proper install in your system. firstly, you need to check ADD/remove panel in control panel. There you can check or find that it properly install or not. If You not find Add/ remove panel. Then you can re- install it again. It support Firefox better than IE.

Solve : Real Player 'invalid directory' problem?

Answer»

Every time I try to make some changes to Real Player under tools....preferences....general I get an 'invalid directory....the specified directory is invalid' error message. I have tried changing the directory, reloading the program and nothing has worked. Any ideas? Please send suggestions to [emailprotected]

Thank you....Dave/Weatherman

email addy removed to prevent SPAM.Hi Weatherman, welcome to CH.

Patio has changed your post because we don't reply to email addresses. We try to keep EVERYTHING in the forums.

Anyway, to address your issue, by "reloading" the program do you mean you just reinstalled the program, or your uninstalled and reinstalled the program?Quaxo, I THINK you may be confused. You MENTIONED Reinstall twice, when what I'm sure you meant was:

"By reloading the program, do you mean you closed and opened the program, or you uninstalled and reinstalled the program?"

Correct me if I'm wrong I'm not confued, perhaps you are.
I meant exact what I said.Quote from: RubiK on June 15, 2010, 08:12:40 AM

Quaxo, I think you may be confused. You mentioned Reinstall twice, when what I'm sure you meant was:

"By reloading the program, do you mean you closed and opened the program, or you uninstalled and reinstalled the program?"

Correct me if I'm wrong

you can reinstall without uninstalling and installing right after uninstalling can also be called a reinstall in the same way. The fact that many programs use the term "reinstall" when the more appropriate word for their action would be "repair" (which windows installer now calls it, actually) doesn't suddenly mean that you can't use the word in the proper context.

For EXAMPLE, when you say that you "refroze the turkey" then you are implying that the turkey had been thawed previously- there was no implicit "thaw" action required.

This is the proper use of the prefix "re".

Quaxo's first use of the term "reinstall" is in reference to the fact that most installers posess a option in the start menu or in their setup programs (when you run them when the program is installed already) labelled "reinstall" The term is used INCORRECTLY in that context, but Quaxo referring to it is not- that is what the option is called. And, the "Reinstall" option in most setups is far less "complete" of a "install" (because it's neither) so it's important to discern wether weatherman used the "reinstall" or "repair" option as present in setup programs and sometimes on the start menu, or wether they actually chose to uninstall the program and then reinstall it again.

Lastly, I really don't see how pedanticism over the use of terms can possibly help to solve the problem.pedanticism ?I uninstalled (removed) Real Player from my computer, then went to the Real Player web site and downloaded the latest free version of the program. But I still have the same 'invalid directory' problem.

Now that we have cleared that up, any suggestions on how to solve the 'invalid directory' problem? Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks....Dave/Weatherman

Solve : Unable to open links?

Answer»

I recently bought a new PC; OS Windows 7, 32 bit; using Microsoft Office 2003; Internet Explorer 8.
When I want to access a link in some of the websites, it doesn't want to open - says eror on page, and e.g. unterminated string constant Line 1158. Sometimes it has other error messages. I uninstalled my BITDEFENDER antivirus programme, but problem still persists. PLEASE advise me.What happens if you use a different browser (Firefox, OPERA, etc)?A recently purchased "new" PC should NOT be causing these kinds of problems (unless you have altered the SOFTWARE or hardware since purchase). I would be thinking of returning it under warranty in case there are other issues COMING down the pike.truenorth

what is the problem how i can gix?

because it say Adobe Photoshop CS5 portable version is free forever.Adobe never made a CS5 Portable version. It's not legitimate software and we strictly do not help with pirated software here.

I suggest you buy a legimate copy of the software. If you can't afford CS5, being a $700 program, you can try Adobe Photoshop Elements. While the Elements programs don't have all the features of their larger counterparts, they are STILL powerful and useful programs... not to mention affordable (PS Elements is only $79.99).

http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/I believe Paint Shop Pro is another affordable alternative.

In fact, Paint.NET is free and has a very similar "feel" to Paint Shop Pro.

Solve : create a bat file to connection mapped drives at start up?

Answer»

I have a situation.
I have a server that the customer refueses to have joined to their DOMAIN but we have a software that needs to CONNECT to shared FOLDERS. i would like to CREATE a bat file so when they start up the computer it will run from the start up folder and will connect to the mapped drives ( that USE non domain CREDENTIALS) right now they need to connect to the drive and add the username and password everytime they connect to this drive after they reboot their machine.
i would consider myself a beginner on scripting or Bat files so i am lost.
