Solve : Client Mac address?! pop-up at start-up?

Answer»

Ok so I got This IBM PC 300GL from my school. Its an old pentium3 model and It used to be on a network. I reinstalled windows 2000. And the computer booted fine. Using the IBM PC 300PL I had at home I OPENED the bois and in the start options I enebled the RAM check and disabled the option of booting into a network. Today i pluged the computer to the internet but at start-up after showing the IBM logo it says
client MAC address and its shows this / turning and a bunch of numbers. The computers at school do this to boot into the network at start-up. So i WENT into the bios and in devices and I/0 port I opened network setup and disabled active LAN or something like that but when I reboot the computer I still did it so I checked in the bios and It became active again. I turned on the other IBM pc 300pl running Xp (this one works fine I used it to configure the bios in the first one and this one has all the same parts but a newer motherboard and 200MHz processor BIGGER.) and in the same place the devices and I/0 Porst\network setup\and instead of active LAN it says Mac address and disabled. My question is how to disable the mac address on the computer with win 2000? It doesn't seem to have this option in that section. By the way Before I did enter the bios I had to reset the cmos jumper for it had a password.

Ps I don't know If this will help but here are my sys specks

533 Mhz processor
385 mb RAM
10.1 GB hdd
floppy
cd and cd burner(separate drives)

thanks in advance. Sounds like you didn't do a clean format and install...the bios THINKS its on a network thought not the os

Solve : Chrome OS Flow Error 8?

Answer»

Im thinking about trying Chrome OS FLOW. And here are the instrictions on how to install it to a FLASH drive:

1.Make sure you have extracted the cd-image (the. Img) archive (. Tar), you can use 7-Zip for this.
2.Launch Windows Image Writer, select the image-cd (ChromeOS-Flow.img) and your USB drive letter
3.Click on “WRITE”. The installation image is copied to the key. (You may need administrator rights)
4.The key will be formatted to copy the image.
5.Once done, close the program and restart from the USB key.
6.Done
7.If your BIOS does not support booting from a USB drive, burn PLOP (sic) on a diskette, CD or DVD and restart the USB.

I followed it until i got to an error while trying to launch Windows Image Writer. It gives me and error saying that :

An error occurred when ATTEMPTING to get a handle on the device. This usually means something is currently accessing the device; please close all applications and try again.

Error 8

can it get some help with this?

Thanksok i figured it out... just disable the floppy drive "It's not like your going to need it"

Solve : Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, Windows98SE and Doom95?

Answer»

Does anybody know if it may be worth it trying to play Doom95 (Doom for Windows 95) under Windows98SE, virtualized by Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 under Windows XP Home Edition or Professional Edition? If it is possible, would it be possible to get mouse support in this case?

I know that Windows XP Home Edition is not supported for Virtual PC 2004, but I read online that it should be compatible. Since Virtual PC 2004 has no USB support, I believe I'll have to wait until I get a PS/2 multimedia keyboard. (This is for the Dell computer in the basement.)

I had already tried VMWare Player, and although I was able to get Win98SE to install SUCCESSFULLY and get sound working, Doom95 would not play right. (The game's graphics looked wrong.)Why not give DOSBox a try...Quote from: patio on April 02, 2010, 09:27:20 AM

Why not give DOSBox a try...
Doom95 was for Windows 95/98/ME. DosBox won't run it. Doom95 runs fine under Windows 2000/XP, but gets no mouse support. I was hoping that a virtual install of Windows 98 might be worth trying.Gotcha...
I assumed DOOM II sorry.get GZDoom:

http://grafzahl.drdteam.org/page.php?page=230

And it can run in all it's glory! 320x240? Not a chance! more like 1440x900:

http://bc-programming.com/images/other/gzDoom_2.png

I also copied the high resolution textures that are made for the JDoom Texture pack.

Speaking of Which, JDoom is another option, it uses the Doomsday engine:

http://www.dengine.net/

You can get Texture packs, model packs, etc, and make Doom, the game from the early 1990's, look like this:

http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5343/jdoom202.jpg

and this

All you need is the WAD file from the game you already have. either Doom.wad, doom2.wad, etc. you can also get TNT.wad and Plutonia.wad, which are essentially "mission packs" for the original game. Unfortunately, while I am already familiar with several source ports, I have long preferred Doom95. As the old computer has Doom95 on it already, with full mouse support, I wanted to be able to virtualize Windows98SE good enough on at least one computer to be able to get Doom95's mouse functions working with a PS/2 mouse. I'm going to give Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 a try before switching to a source port. Doom95 can support only four resolutions, and the higher two are 640x400 and 640x480.

Also, BC_Programmer, I don't really like the 3D models that are used in some source ports. I prefer to face the original sprites instead.Quote

Doom95 is the absolute worst choice. the DOS executable would be far more preferable.

you could try Chocolate Doom, which tries to remain as true to the original as possible.

I have tried Chocolate Doom before, and it plays much like the original Doom does.

Now, regarding Doom95, have you seen this page?
http://www.flaterco.com/kb/DOOM/DOOM95.html

One serious fail mentioned there is that partial invisibility is misrendered, making it appear like abstract art. For some odd reason, when I play Doom95 on the old computer, which has Windows98SE, I don't get that problem and the partial invisibility gets rendered in the same way as in the DOS version. However, to get it to render properly on XP, I end up having to use the -emulator parameter in the run box. I've also had issues with sound cutting out, as I have an ISA card and the Microsoft drivers. However, after making a backup of DSound.dll, I tried putting an older version of the file in the C:\Windows\System folder, and although DXDiag reported an older version of the file being there, Doom95 was able to run without sound cutting out. After I finish playing, I restart the computer, then go back into the System folder and replace the older version of DSound.dll with the most current version on that computer, backed up in the C:\Windows\System\DirectX folder. For any other games on that computer, I don't do this. However, trying to use DSound.dll from DirectX5 or DirectX6.1 causes a BSOD when trying to play a game in Doom95, thus I need to use either the DirectX9 version of DirectSound or use one from DirectX3 and earlier. I'd prefer the older ones to prevent the sound from cutting out during gameplay.

A universal issue between Doom95 and other Windows source ports is midi music not playing correctly after certain tracks getting played. I've had issues with volume, modulation and pitch wheel settings not getting reset between tracks. (Not all midi software will harbor this problem. The 'Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth' doesn't do this, and I never had that problem with Doom95 when using an external module.) I managed to find a way to fix this by extracting the music and add a few necessary event commands to the start of the intermission screen music and other between level tracks, resetting those settings to their default values whenever those songs come on. As a result, during normal gameplay I don't deal with that midi problem again. For instance, if the intermission screen music 'D_DM2INT' gets played after the Doom II track 'D_DOOM' gets played, and then the track 'D_RUNNIN' gets played after the intermission music, the main theme of that track still plays at the correct pitch. (I was getting that midi volume/modulation/pitch problem with Doom95 while using a Roland SCC-1 card for the midi music under Windows 98SE on the old computer, and had been wanting to find a way around it.) Now I can't allow myself to add these events to every Doom track, for some tracks will be affected in an unacceptable way if this occurs, causing changes to the music itself. The music for Doom E1M8 is an example. Some of the pitch wheel parts disappeared during the conversion from the MIDI format to the MUS format that Doom95 uses. Final Doom for Windows 95 also had issues with the music first heard in TNT maps 2, 4, 13, 15 and 29, in that some music tracks had parts with volume levels far below what they should be. I had to use a midi editor such as Midi Maestro to fix that problem so that all of the instruments would be heard while the game was being played on those levels. For instance, in TNT Map 02, the saw wave instrument couldn't be heard ORIGINALLY in 'Final Doom for Windows 95', but could be heard in the DOS version of Final Doom. Once those changes were made to the music files, they were permanent.

The reason why I use Doom95 on the older computer is because my favorite source port, PrBoom, doesn't run at full speed in high resolutions on that computer, plus I can use the mouse's thumb button with Logitech MouseWare to have a Shift key assignment, enabling me to hold it down to use speed mode without having to hold down an actual Shift key. And I obviously don't need Chocolate Doom on that one. (The original DOS version runs very well.)

A few other source ports I have used are WinDoom, Doom Legacy, and Doomsday. Doom Legacy was my least favorite port, as it wasn't as faithful to the original game as I'd like. (I can't even play the Ultimate Doom EPISODE Thy FLESH Consumed on that source port.)

If I'm going to play Doom on Windows XP in single player mode, I'll be likely to stick to PrBoom, and if I want it to behave like Doom, I'll just make the necessary changes to the options.

However, for an even better experience for myself, I've been doing one thing people might be less likely to do. I have been using a level editor called WadAuthor, and have been fixing level bugs such as missing textures and stuck monsters. Here's one example: The Cacodemons in the small rooms on either side of the exit in Ultimate Doom Episode 4 Map 4 'Unruly Evil' are no-longer glued together as I moved the rear Cacodemon in each room up to the back wall. When a switch is pressed that OPENS one of the doors in front of either set of Cacodemons, instead of them just sitting there and not being able to do anything until one of them is killed, they both fly out in my direction and start spitting ball lightning! (These types of fixes break compatibility with demos that were recorded with the bugs present, but I know those maps well enough that I don't need the demos.) I also used WadAuthor to fix the infamous yellow key bug in TNT Map 31 'Pharaoh'. Speaking of that map and Doom95, I replaced a few former sergeants to fix a bug with them waking up too early, preventing the problem with the last group of sergeants in that level not being able to ambush the player in Doom95. (The new ones are in the same places as the originals.)

Speaking of Doom95, the file DOOMLYNCH.DLL is a version downloaded from the internet, fixing the launcher's demo recording ability. I had also used a hex editor to fix a misspelling of E1M1 'Hangar', as it was displayed as 'E1M1 'Hanger'' in the launcher. The only problem I cannot fix is the mouse not working with the Doom95 under Windows XP. (It's a documented problem that has no fix due to virtual device drivers not being supported under Win2000 and later operating systems.) This problem is what causes me to use a source port under the newer operating systems. I save Doom95 for the multiplayer games, as I'm able to more easily start a multiplayer game in it than in PrBoom and any other source port that uses the command line. To make things easier for those that end up stuck with the keyboard alone, I simply replaced the movement key assignments from the arrow keys to the WASD layout.

At any rate, I'm likely to give Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 one try this coming week, before trying other source ports. I couldn't get a multiplayer game going in PrBoom between the HP 7285 and the Dell 2350, which was a bummer. I did succeed between the Dell 2350 and the HP a1440n, on the other hand. Doom95 was a success between all three computers.I just checked to see if Doom95 was playable under Windows98, when the OS was installed in Virtual PC 2004. I got the game to run, but the performance was not as I had desired. (Too slow, and sound was lagging behind the action.) Not only that, but the midi music played back horribly, as I was stuck with FM Synthesis, and could not use wavetable midi instead. I'm going to distance myself from Virtual PC.

I'll go to ZDoom instead for use in multiplayer games, unless somebody brings an older computer that can have Windows 98SE installed on it. (I'm going to continue using Doom95 for single player games.)You realize that the MUS music in Doom was designed for a FM synthesis MIDI device? technically it's more accurate to the original to use FM synth.Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 08, 2010, 12:48:42 PM
You realize that the MUS music in Doom was designed for a FM synthesis MIDI device? technically it's more accurate to the original to use FM synth.

Pffft. I'd rather use a Roland Sound Canvas, preferably an SC-55. In this case, I use either the Roland SCC-1 sound card or the SC-88Pro external module with Doom on the old computer.

I won't use an FM synth unless there's nothing else possible, and Wolfenstein 3D would be an example of that.Quote from: Ryan on April 09, 2010, 12:18:10 PM

That is true.

I might attempt to use ZDoom if I ever want to attempt multiplayer, unless a friend playing with me prefers to use the keyboard alone. I'll be looking into it, of course. I'll have to find out which of the source ports will run the best on the oldest computer, before going forward with any other plans. I'll attempt ZDoom and Chocolate Doom first. For the MIDI music on the old computer, I'll be sticking with the SCC-1 and SC-88Pro.You can download a patch I wrote for this problem : http://youfailit.net/files/dmousexp.zip

Solve : Picture Resizing with transparency?

Answer»

I need a program for picture resizing. I have about 200 GIF images that I need to shrink down to about half of their current size. These images all have transparent backgrounds and I need those to remain transparent. I tried a couple of things, LIKE the XP POWER Toy resizer, but they keep turning the background white INSTEAD of leaving it transparent. While there are only 200 images at the moment, it will potentially be about 750-1000 when I am done with this project and don't much feel like resizing them individually in Photoshop (which works for what I want to do, but too slow one at a time).

Anyone have any recommendations of a specific resizer that will RETAIN transparency? I've download 3 so far and they all don't do it.I'm not sure if its free but you may want to check it out.

Solve : Adobe Reader9 doesn't show Preview Thumbnail in Windows Explorer?

Answer»

I just bought this laptop (Toshiba Satellite T235D-S1345RD running Windows 7 Premium Home Edition) last week. It came with Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 pre-installed.

In the past, when I navigated through Windows EXPLORER to the folders where I keep my PDF's, each file (When viewing in icon view rather than list view) showed a preview of the PDF (for instance the cover page of my Resume or the Cover Art of an e-book). With this new Windows (My old laptop top ran Windows XP 32bit) I only get the same generic Adobe Icon for all of my PDF files.

I really liked having the preview of the PDF file because, to be honest, I sometimes forget what I have named something or need a visual reminder of whether I read that file or not so the preview is really helpful to me.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader site does not seem to address the issue, nor offer any official solution. A LOOK through their forum, however, identifies many people seeming to have the same problem. A member of their forum does direct you to a site that you can visit (Unaffiliated with Adobe or Microsoft Windows) that has a free fix you can download but I wasn't sure I could trust it. I did find three different forums online that all have someone who has suggested this person's website and says it has worked for them. Obviously, despite the glowing reviews, I am reluctant to download an independent fix from an unknown site. I will post the link here if I am asked to (if someone thinks it WOULD help to authenticate the helpfulness of this fix) but am not sure I am supposed to just willy-nilly post unknown websites.

Incidentally, several sites I GOOGLED say it is an issue with Adobe Acrobat and it's compatibility with 64 BIT systems.

Bottom line: Has anyone heard of this problem and knows how to fix it and/or have you heard of a website, unaffiliated with Adobe Acrobat, that claims to have the fix. If so, is it genuine (again, I will post the address if instructed).

Other computer specs (just in case it is helpful to know)
Processor: AMD Turion (tm) II Neo K625 Dual-Core Processor 1.50GHz
Installed Memory: 4.00 GB (3.75 GB usable)
System Type: 64-bit Operating System

Sorry if this is rambling, I am computer illiterate and wanted to include anything and everything I found out in case it might be useful.

Solve : Using Autostreamer?

No, they said "zipped" file, not "compressed" file, so it must be .zip (or .zipx). Not that it makes a difference anyway.

Quote
After I download a zipped programme my newly created folder is full of zillions of subfiles...confusing.

Do you know what I mean?
"Zipping" or "compressing" files involves compressing the files into one file which makes them easier to email, upload, etc. When you download a zipped or compressed file, the opposite happens - you open it and all these files appear. These are the files that are inside the compressed file. Thanks EVERYONE ,

the problem here on my part is that I have not yet developped sufficient feeling for folders and such.

And the important thing here would be to put all these 'useless' subfiles into a folder or subfolder where they dont bother.

It may also come useful if I delete the zip.folder as soon as the programme has been unzipped to LIMIT confusion-possibility

"unzip", "unpack", "extract" are all the same, right?

Yes.

Are you using some sort of program to unzip the files?A GOOD way to keep track of extracted files is to place all of the files from an archive in it's own folder, and name the folder so you know what it contains. Most archiving PROGRAMS (such as winrar) can be setup to do this automatically, so as soon as you extract the files the program automatically creates a folder with the same name as the original archive and place the extracted files there.

Solve : "Favorites" disappear when copying Outlook.pst file?

Answer»

I have Outlook on multiple systems and once a week I copy the .pst file from my office computer to my primary home computer so they have the same emails, address book (OAB), contacts, calendar and tasks. This has WORKED flawlessly over the past 15 or so years for all versions of Outlook - until now.

I recently upgraded to Office 2010 and when I copy the .pst file everything is fine EXCEPT that all favorites in the email module are missing and I need to drag the folders up from the bottom pane and recreate them. The "favorites" view IS enabled and "Favorites" a does APPEAR at the top left, it's simply empty. This obviously isn't a major issue but it is a bit annoying. Wondered if anyone has any THOUGHTS on this. Again, it only HAPPENED after installing Outlook 2010 a month or so ago.

I have setup to BOOT from floppy ( disc 1 in a: drive ) a: drive light comes on, no ACTION by the a: drive,
and then xp boots from the hard drive.

I'm like BP in the Gulf of Mexico -- lost and hoping someone can fix my mess.Since Powerquest was purchased by Symantec who offers little support, you need to find the old documentation for Powerquest Drive Image. I suspect one of the FLOPPIES is bootable; computer boot order in BIOS must have floppy drive first. These Guys May Help

Solve : Pinnacle Studio 14?

Answer» HI, I've been editing AVCHD with Pinnacle STUDIO 14 for at least six months now, but just recently it came up with an error message that, "There is insufficient graphics memory on your system to edit HD 1440x1080/60i video using all of Studio's GPU acceleration features. You may see some black frames where your project exceeds the capabilities of the system graphics board."

I have a computer running Windows 7 with three sticks of 2gb DDr3 RAM, intel i7 core processor, and an ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series graphics card. It had been running Pinnacle fine (with some lagging, but at least it played the frames) w/out this message for a while. Any ideas as to what might be going on?

Recently I juggled around my RAM sticks, and changed the virtual memory but now i have changed it back, and STILL I get the message...You seem to have more than adequate RAM installed however have you determined if it is all being recognized and is available?truenorthyep that was the problem I just needed to click the RAM all the way in. (oops)
Thanks for your help.Glad it's fixed, but why did you move it around in the first PLACE?

Solve : I can't uninstall msn??

Answer»

I know there will be a myriad of different posts similar, if not the same as mine, but I have looked around to maybe find a solution but to no avail. Sorry if I seem stupid, as I am terrible with computers. Anyway, I uninstalled my MSN by removing it at add/remove programs. I then went to reinstall it but it said that I still had MSN installed, so I searched for all of the files that relate to MSN and I deleted them all.

I found a file called "Windows Live" (I think) and it was 160mb so I figured that it was the file to delete. I deleted it but I could not empty it from the recycle bin. It comes up with "cannot remove folder (random numbers and letters) the DIRECTORY is not empty. I looked in this SITE : http://sniptools.com/vault/uninstall-and-remove-msn-messenger, and found a tip where it says "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove Done. That should remove it. ". And so I run it and I find that the file is no longer in the recycle bin, but, when I CLICK empty, it comes up with the same "cannot remove folder" message. Does anyone know how to fix my problem? If so, thanks.

Also, when I go to empty the files, it says "do you want to remove these 3 files" and I only have 1?MSN is part of windows like IE (internet explorer) so not only generally difficult to completely remove but also normally rather pointless.
Why are you removing it?I'm uninstalling it because it doesn't work properly. I sign in and I recieve these errors, but now I can't open it at all. I found a shortcut to it and I open it and the msn can't be located.I have uninstalled it + reinstalled it successfully before, just using the add/remove programs method.Quote from: Mulreay on July 03, 2010, 05:39:13 PM

Why are you removing it?
The OP (aca) seems to be talking about MSN Messenger, not MSN Explorer. And, MSN Messenger is not a standard part of Windows (Actually, I BELIEVE MSN Explorer is not normally installed as part of a standard installation of Win XP, although it's available via Add/Remove Windows Components, which is accessed via the Add or Remove Programs panel). Therefore, it must have been installed, would appear in Add/Remove Programs, and should be uninstallable from there. Mulreay might be thinking about Windows Messenger. Which are you trying to remove: MSN Messenger or Windows MessengerI'm trying to remove MSN. The new windows live messenger that you download.you should be able to remove Windows Live Messenger fro add remove programs I did but when I tried to reinstall it, the installer said that i still had Windows live messenger.

Solve : Outlook 2007 Receive error?

Answer»

I have an Outlook 2007 RECEIVE error after Outlook has been up for a while. Stopping and RESTARTING Outlook resolves the issue. Any IDEAS? I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on an HPE-180T desktop with 9GB of memory.

This is new and used to work correctly. The only change is I recently removed some pretty nasty malware on a friends desktop via help from the virus / malware forum here. After getting that PC cleaned up I ran my PC through some of the same STEPS to make sure it was clean. Part of the final clean up steps were to install Web of Trust and SPYWARE blaster.

Any thoughts? Could one of the virus tools be blocking the receive port after repeated use by Outlook? I don't get a warning or notification. Thanks in advance.

Solve : Outlook 2003, edit subject on received emails??

Answer»

Quite late? A year and a half late.Quote from: navyn on January 18, 2010, 07:24:45 AM

i know its quite late for a reply or an answer for your question..
however, if you change the subject field frequently, then here is your best bet to do this rather than opening every other email, change, close and save:
Go to View, Arrange by - current view, customize current view - other settings, ENABLE the option called: Allow in-cell editing.

navyn.

Better late than not at all.
I remembered setting this option years ago and couldn't remember how I'd found the setting - thank you Navyn for reminding me!

As for all those that can't understand why you'd need to use the facility - I'm with the OP on this one.
It's an obvious need for a business user. There are too many people out there that either don't bother to put a subject, or write something completely meaningless - for EXAMPLE, one company I WORK for insists on putting "IT course" for every single time she wants to book me to run a course! So i end up editing the subject with the date of the PROPOSED course along with the Application to be trained.

Solve : Need DOS flat-database program with data in text file - Freebase, Nuthsell etc?

Answer»

Trying to find a DOS flat-database program which SAVES data as a text file, (as .txt, .csv etc.), I saw this freeware program cited: FREEBASE.
Downloadable file:
fbase180.zip
but the link was obsolete.
Does anyone know a working link to download it, or, has it and could give me a copy?
Alternatively, I believe Nutshell worked like that too. It was not freeware so iI would like to buy it with TOL if someone has it to sell.
Is there any other such DOS database program which saves data in a text file, be it .txt, ,csv, etc., (that can be edited externally)? please give details and how to get it?
I have an urgent need for full portability of my data due to problems in my own hardware , so this is really important for me right now, and help would be greatly appreciated.Today's PC history Quiz.

Who was Jim Button?

Foe the answer Click Here.
And learn about the the moist popular flat file things ever.I used to have PC-File, lost it a long time ago; but as I remember, it saved files in a .DBF format, correct?
I need a database that saves data natively in TXT format (.txt, .csv) etc., and where the data file can be edited externally, i.e. independently from the database program, like, with DOS edit etc., and when that is done the right way, the database program can still read the updated data file. That is the kind of truly portable system I need.
As I mentioned, I had found only FreeBase and Nutshell listed as able to function that way, and I'm trying to get them or at least one of these FreeBase was freeware, so I hope someone still has it and could give me a copy. Nutshell was one I did use at work a long time ago, I really liked it and would like to buy it (with TOL). Modern programs can read and write files in several formats. You can always convert files from one format to another. The advantage of using a program like PC-File and other flat file managers is that they have there own text editors that are better that the pure DOS text editor.
Which text editor did you want to use and how can thaht be better tha tthe built-in editor of the File Manager?
http://www.gurus.org/margy/pc-file.htm
The Complete Guide to PC-File, Version 5.01
Thanks for the link. Unfortunatley the manual is not available to read online, to see how it saves data. The version for download is 5, but the site does not specify if it is for DOS or for Windows. I would need the DOS version, and my post questions only concerns that version.
.
Which is the last PC-File DOS version #?
What is the native file extension the DOS Pc-File version saves data in?
Does Pc-File save data in ASCII text format, either as a default or at least as a kind of "save-as" choice?
.
As an aside, I'm intrigued by the text editor you mention as part of Pc-File, I don't remember it. I did have PC-Write, a separate program, and I had also bought PC-calc. All lost. (I really liked all three, THOUGH I'm only looking for a database program at present).
Is there a text editor "inside" the PC-File program?
.
I know of COURSE about file formats converters, but I want to avoid having to use extra steps or software.
I guess it may not be obvious that the most important part of the title of my post is "with data in text file". It's because there was not enough space there to specify more explicitely and say instead, , "that natively saves data in ASCII/DOS text format, such as .txt, .csv, etc."
.
Again, I'd like to use the DOS Pc-file ver if it does save data in ASCII/DOS text format, either as a default or at least as a kind of "save-as" choice: does it?
If not, can anyone give me a way to obtain Freebase or Nutshell?
Thanks!
The term "freebase" is used for a number of things. So it is hard to locate the shareware program.
Also, are you looking fo? Perhaps r a program to make a datqabaqse or a actual database taht has been built up over time by many users.

Assume you want a database maker.

PC-File was a 'shareware' program and was very basic.
The dbase ][ was a relational database manager that could handle two or more intermingled database files for data entry, sorting and reporting.
Later PC-File, version 7 I think, began to use the dbf to be able to interface with dbase.

Editing of records is normally done with the manager. Using a text editor was a panic method of repairing a corrupted file.

The was some way to exporting fioles into csv for use by other dbase managers.
You can directly edit csv files, or edit them inside a program that has the lables and other stuff taht helps you to understand what the fields are.

Version 5 of PC-File is available as a download from a site. If you read the entire link I gave yuou will find it. They are a set of files, you need them all.

That's the best I can do for you.
>>> Assume you want a database maker.

yes, here it is, quoted from my initial post:
program cited: FREEBASE.
Downloadable file:
fbase180.zip

The only download link I found, was obsolete

>>> [PC-File] If you read the entire link I gave you

Thanks - with the details you just posted on PC-File, I think it would fit some of my purpose, if I can't get FreeBase or Nutshell.
.
I downloaded Pc-File to HDD but when trying to install, after listing the correct drive letters and pressing [enter], it never loaded disk 2, just hung there.
Do you know how this could be installed if you don't have diskettes and a floppy drive? I already wrote to the support EMAIL address listed, but so far, have not gotten a reply.
.
I you can't help me install the 3 .zip files I downloaded, I hope someone else will, and especially, I hope someone will follow up on my request to obtain FreeBase and/or Nutshell.

The only old-dos database programs I know are dbase, PC-File, Framework and some other thing I bought and forgot.

Sorry I can not be of more help.
These "free" programs are no longer supported.

Here is a review of the PC-File program links and relevant info.

It ALSO seems to makes people post about it. HehJenny,

You can add that account to your Outlook at home, if your company allows a remote connection to their e-MAIL server.

All you need to do, in order to setup the account on your home computer is to follow the instructions from Microsoft located here: Setup Outlook E-mail Account

Good luck!

Oh...I almost forgot to remind you...if you're going to be checking your work e-mail from home...make sure you configure Outlook (at home) to leave a copy of the messages on the server. Otherwise, if you download your work e-mail to your computer (at home), those messages will no longer be available from your mail server at work.

Solve : Raid 0 Defrag question?

Answer»

Not sure if i'm posting in the good SECTION but, I'm currently RUNNING windows vista ultimate. Also 2 HD-500-SATA2-SG HARDDRIVE on raid 0. Should I defrag the drive? Or doing so will REMOVE the purpose of doing Raid 0?the RAID controller sorts all that out...as far as the operating system sees there is only one drive there. Defragging will always help. RAID 0 means that the data is striped across X DRIVES. So if you defrag it, then the data will be consecutive on disk. This lessens the need for head movements on both drives, since the data is side-by-side on disk. It doesn't matter RAID or not. It should always help. Thank you very much!

Solve : Windows DVD Maker Not Burning DVD?

Answer»

I have Vista and i CONVERTED some videos files into .mpeg format, put them into Windows DVD Maker, GOT 99% (not even kidding) of the CODING loaded, and then this window pops up saying that there's been an error and it shuts down. This has happened three times in a row with three different DVD-R discs. Anyone know the reason for this and how to fix it?One file, or you tried several of them?
If the latter, give DVD Flick: http://www.dvdflick.net/ a shot.
What was the original format, and what converter did you use?Six files actually, but I MADE sure they all could fit in with room to spare. Their original format was .ogm and I used Prisim Video Converter to convert them.Did they play while in ogm format?
Did they play after conversion?
Where are the files from?
Vista DVD maker gave up on me at some point, so it may be your problem, as well. They did play before, but I had to change the format of the files in order to get them into the Windows DVD Maker program. They played just fine AFTERWARDS too. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't from the files because I know they're clean: my bet's on the WDMTry DVD Flick.Thats what I'm doing now, and so far its working great! Thanks for the help!!Great!
I had very same problem.
I think, I must have installed some software, which messed up some codecs, which were used by Vista DVD Maker, so instead of investigating, I switched to something else...

I don't know about elsewhere, but here in Europe you can get TVs with card slots and USB ports. They have BUILT in chipsets that can decode multimedia files DivX, mpeg, jpeg, mp3, etc.

Solve : okay this could be intelligent question is a recorder different than a burner?

Answer»

by the way this is xp2

i maybe able to answer the question i know the burner makes an ISO. for some reason i could not GET mine to burn an ISO. i thought because it was already in ISO format from another PROGRAM. so i tried downloading another linux to get mine to burn. when my memory has been low my burner would only burns in ISO format. (my burner is not even doing that.
so i started over erasing i guess there still wasn't enough memory
for i downloaded linux to my memory stick i got the program somehow to install but i don't think it is complete
i did a disk check and no "office program " the kernal is there and his "genernal" some generic boot
usually when you have an ISO image on a disk it shows a colorful disk half way out a folder...... this icon seems to indicate whatever.
the ISO that the linux program is formatted in is by "alex ferman"? the icon is not a pretty LITTLE disk either i believe most if not all the linux program with the Iso burner is on my memory stickruby
do i erase the disk and start over? or am i missing something about getting it started. thanks can you give a site to get the program from

Sorry, your post makes so little sense. Tell us what you are trying to achieve. Give specs of your pc including exactly what operating system you are running and which burner you are trying to use such as Roxio, Nero etc. You start off with Quote
by the way this is xp2
then move onto Linux which is an operating system in its own right. Are you dual booting XP/Linux?

Right now I don't think you know which way is up.

i am sorry i thought you were with me
i have xp2
i downloaded LINUX i believe a live ISO CD
i have a nero burner
i downloaded an alex freman

there is a shortcut on my desktop but the ICON DOES NOT LOOK HEALTHY

i am comming the conclusion that they are trying to find each other
the nero is on c DRIVE
the linux is on h drive (mem stick)

to tell you i could not if you explain what dual booting is i have an idea but in this case the reason i don't know is the reason for the question. i am sorry maybe i was communicating somewhere else but my problem is
i am trying to download LINUX onto my computer. i couldn't get my burner(nero) to burn a cd or record ISO (file)or whatever. so i downloaded one from the internet the alex ferman or whatever. i suspected since i couldn't get either one to work because the icon did not make a beautiful disk i erased the programs the recorders, the bit torrents(i tried everyway to download LINUX) AND STARTED OVER. SOMEHOW AFTER I RELOADED LINUX UBUNTU 8.0 TTHE NEXT TIME ONTO A 4.GIG MEM STICK WITH THE ALEX FREMAN ISO BURNER. somehow in the process of something it started downloading it made a kernel and a boot whatever when i boot up i do get a choice. (i am not sure from which burner (nero, alex) the alex program does not seem to work and the nero program fakes it. i did finally get nero to LEAVE a pretty disk icon. i rebooted. if i choose LINUX it takes it's self through a million check this and that then i politely asks me for my pass and id or whatever. right now my brain is fried if you read my 50 posts it's not even a joke. i have tried to venture into so many programming languages. i get them downloaded then don't know how to get them started. i am having problems mostly with programming commands and using the prompt. i have improved in the last week. i can get a few to jump for me. anyway back to the question, i can see what is on the disk. i just either don't know how to get to LINUX, or it could be a live cd that only the kernel is there now what do i do.
thanks ruby

i hope i cleared things up now i just need to know how i can tell the program is working and what is next
it is on the cd if i run the e drive files are on it may not be them all but i can't not or don't know how to get the program to run

Solve : A question about MS Word?

Answer»

Hello Everyone,

I've recently upgraded MS Word 97 with MS Word 2000.

There is one thing that is driving me nuts. Everytime I open up a new document the system CREATES a new Word tab in the task bar. Therefore I will end up with many separate documents, each of which has to be Xed out of in order to close Word.

There MUST be a SIMPLE solution to this problem.

Is there?

Thankswhen you select new document that is what is supposed to happen...you can KEEP opening as many as you like...it does not auto close any other open documents when you open a new one

perhaps it is just a new page that you require??

That's an example of me posting this reply and having two separate word documents open. No, that's not how it works with MS 97.

When you open a new document it should create a new tab, not a whole new installation of Word. So when you X out of Word you X out of all open documents.

That's not the way this one is running.that is how it may have worked in 97' but in later versions it does not......sorryQuote from: davidoc on June 30, 2008, 03:51:47 PM

Notice that, in the lower image, the two Word taskbar buttons have been stacked and a number 2 appears next to the Word ICON to indicate two Word windows are open. That's if you check the 'Group Similar Taskbar Buttons'. He is talking about this.....I think:

Actually, there's an easier way to close multiple taskbar buttons for a particular application. Select one button, then hold down the Ctrl key while selecting one or more additional buttons. Then, right click and select "Close Group".

Solve : MS Office Outlook?

Answer»

Hi All,

Me again. This problems been bugging me for ages so having SORTED out most of my issues I DECIDED to tackle this one.

I'm running Windows XP SP2. With MS Office Outlook when I close it, it will not open again unless I restart (Problem 1) Problem 2 is taht when I restart or shutdown my computer it always comes up with a box saying "could not shutdown Outlook" then the options End Now, or cancel. So If I select shutdown my computer then walk away and forget about it the shutdown PROCESS becomes stuck on that one part waiting for me to click end now.

Anyone know how to fix this annoying problem? I have tried closing out of outlook before I shut down but it doesn't seem to close properly (Maybe why I can't get it open again) and still comes up with the End Now or cancel screen.

Thanks
Razor Right HO. The situation has been resolved but I will tell you how it happend for future reference.

In the process of cleaning up my computer I deleted Winfax Pro, which I now believe was causing the original problem. I deleted Winfax Pro as part of geting anything assosiated wtih Norton and symantec off my system. After I had done all this and I started outlook A box came up saying: 'The add in DCCEXT32.DLL could not be installed or RELOADED. This problem may be resolved by using Detect and Repair from the help menu.'

After this came up I thought I'd restart to seee if it would clear the problem - it didn't, but I noticed that I did not have that annoying screen coming up saying that it could not shutdown. Then I googled DCCEXT32.DLL and found the following site, followed its instructions, and bingo! All my outlook problems solved.

Hope this is a help for anyone with similar problems.

trazerSystem Restore? If your Shift Button is stuck down, try pressing it very hard a few times. It should release it.I've never done this on a Microsoft keyboard, but on most keyboards I have USED, you can carefully prise up a key and it will come off and you can clean underneath it. Then it will click back into place. remember there are 2 shift keys on most keyboards. You may find bits of dried food, baby drool etc under there.

I know this is being wise after the event, but letting babies play with keyboards (or computers in general IMHO) is a bad idea, not least because if you can get the keys off, so might the baby if one was a bit loose, and then it could choke either on the key or the plastic parts underneath. Also nice keyboards are not cheap. If you don't want to come over as mean to the baby, pitch the choking idea to the baby's mother. Most moms don't fancy the idea of a baby turning blue and a scary trip to the EMERGENCY room and will see the sense of choosing more appropriate playthings for the little one.

It's like there is no link from the ext. drive to the WMP.
The drive is a Free Agent Seagate Go with Ceedo on it. When you open Ceedo, there is a page that looks similar to the start menu in Windows. There is a shortcut icon for WMP listed there but it will not open. It just gets the same window described above.
Any thoughts?

I'm using:
XP pro
HP laptop
Jim
Try VLC Player.OK I will try that tomorrow although, I don't follow your thinking. The WMP works from the ext. hhd, but has to be OPENED "manually" first. It just won't start automatically.
Thanks
JimAre you sure they are an appropriate format?YES. They are wmv-etc. In fact, it used to work. Something has CHANGED. Maybe I could uninstall/reinstall?

Jim
No harm in doing so.I fixed it!
I did the re-install but discovered later that can access the files directly from "My Computer". I don't need to run Ceedo.
The WMP works perfectly!
Well thanks again. Always good to know I can COME here when I need help.

Solve : Retrive files and folders after windows corrupted?

Answer»

I have a question if you had a virus and can't get into windows no matter what, is there a program out there that I could use that would RETRIEVE important stuff such as music or files or folders for example? You could boot from a cd which will ALLOW copying of the files (KNOPPIX is ONE) but if any folder/file was infected you would be copying the virus.

You best post in the Computer Viruses and Spyware forum, one of the CH authorised malware removal SPECIALISTS will help.

Good luck

Solve : Recommendation for newsletter creating software?

Answer»

Do you have any recommendations for software (free if possible) with which I can create a hard copy NEWSLETTER quickly and easily? Scribus has been recommended to me, but I'm not sure how easy it is to use.If you're looking for something like MICROSOFT Office (Word, Publisher), there are many free alternatives like Open Office.

I looked online and found that Scribus is PRETTY POPULAR.

I suspect these files are being "installed" and not "downloaded" as Soybean suggested....

I believe that was me :

perhaps this is another case of confusion with the WORDS "download" and "INSTALL"? And if that is the case- would Adobe READER's Installer not offer the option to Change the folder on one of the installer's pages?

Solve : Will copying a program file keep the info. intact??

Answer»

Hello, i'm currently planning on reinstalling win 98' to my computer using this method-

www.build-your-own-computers.com/how-to-reinstall-windows-without-losing-data.html

I've got my program files all copied right now as well. This includes my Linksys Wireless PCI Adaptor.

Will copying the program file keep all the INFORMATION intact?
Like who i'm connected to and such? I won't need to REDO any of the installation process or anything, will I?ALSO; I need to know because my computer is linked to my brother's PC. He's off at college right now and his computer is "locked", so there's no way I COULD retrieve/come up with any of the information; leaving me with no internet access if it were to disappear. Leaving me in deep kimchi for the rest of the summer ;_;Kaga:
If you are copying the data located in "Program Files" it will not stay intact.

What program files are you trying to copy? Quote

If you copy program files, I would say 80-90% of them will be useless. Some programs (like firefox) can be used on another computer with only their Program Files copied, however, they might not work properly.

Though Firefox may work on the other computer, none of your data (themes, add-ons, saved passwords) will be copied along with it because they are located in C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\

If you mean another piece of software that finds wireless networks other than the Windows Default, this will not work if you copy it.You could copy everything from your computer to an external hard drive and then copy them back when your finished re-installing Windows.Quote from: kpac on June 24, 2008, 10:03:33 AM
You could copy everything from your computer to an external hard drive and then copy them back when your finished re-installing Windows.
It would be more effective to Clone the hard drive.

There are quite a lot of software to do this.Including the FREE ones from drive manuf. websites...

Solve : Media Players-which is best??

Answer»

iTunes......
lolLol....I'm sure there must be MORE out there! I read a review at Skytopia, comparing iTunes, WinAmp, Mediamonkey, and Media Player. Some of it foreign language to me, but I'm sure the rest of you will understand. They periodically run a comparison between the top ones, and the one that won it last time is in second PLACE now, due to changes. From the changes, one wonders if someone from one of those companies read the review. Not gonna tell you which won! I use Windows Media Player EXCLUSIVELY for audio and some video, but I don't like watching dvds with it. It doesn't really display dvds correctly...I actually use WMP for most things, as it's built in, no need to install extra programs.
I do HOWEVER have VLC installed for the formats WMP can't handle, and Cyberlink PowerDVD for DVDs.
If VLC had a music library function I'd abandon WMP entirely. The Ultimate Troubleshooter (TUT) rates Winamp as dangerous. ?? Any ideas why? What is Ultimate Troubleshooter?Quote from: okbreeze on June 18, 2008, 03:41:03 PM

From the changes, one wonders if someone from one of those companies read the review.

Reviews are often unreliable as they are frequently $$$ driven. Don't trust them. We can recommend many a flavor of media player but in the end it comes down to what you like most. Try a few and see. Uninstalling the ones you don't like is painless

Ultimate TroubleshooterAnother "miracle" tool, huh?....Oh, boy...TheUltimateTroubleshooter (TUT) is pretty cool, and they give just so many runs before you have to buy. I like that it rates everything in an easy way, but after seeing the "dangerous" designation on Winamp, I don't know. Maybe someone more savvy than I can break it apart, and see for what aspects a thing is determined dangerous or safe. The advice to try out different Media Players and see which ones I like is one of those ideas that makes me slap my forehead and say, "well....duh!" to myself. Lol; thank youI have always run Windows Media Player, and never had any problems. I like it and its reliable. As the others say it comes down to choice.Probably because WinAmp accesses the Web for updates...
I think i'll pass on TUT.

Solve : Excel 2000?

Answer»

Our office uses this OLD version of Excel. I have a spreadsheet that I've used for months. Now when I open it the top border is hidden behind the Excel toolbars. (I'm refering to the colored line you can grab & drag the whole spreadsheet around). I've tried getting rid of all tool bars and changing the PAGE size from the bottom & sides and nothing gets it to where my mouse can reach it. What am I missing here???I don't have Excel 2000 on this computer but I'll give your problem a try.

First, can you identify exactly what the problem is on the picture below?

From what you have told us, it seems like the tool bar positioning is wrong or something...It was the blue bar across the top. I did fix it by GOING to Window/Arrange and clicking "Cascade" Thanks anyway! Oh...WELL CONGRATULATIONS!
