I have been using Linux Jaunty for the PAST 6 months or so with no problems on the kid's computer. Upgraded to Karmic yesterday and things were not working well, system shutdown for no reason several times, poor video streaming, slow response. So I got this stupid idea to reload XP using the compaq recovery discs. Now the third disc won't load, and I'd like to just reload Jaunty and move on but it won't boot from the disc. I can still access BIOS screen.

This is a Compaq Presario SR1010NX circa 2004.

I'm hoping I can undo the damage...Do you have the BIOS settings set so that CD-ROM is the first boot device?

If I were you now, assuming that the linux cd works fine as a live cd, follow the instructions on this link to format the hard drive through linux.

But before you do that, if the linux cd were stuck not able to install to HD, then just reburn a newly downloaded copy of linux before you format so you can reinstall.

But first download the newest Ubuntu distribution. Jaunty is 2 versions old, Lucid (10.04) is the newest version, and the best Ubuntu ever. You can test everything you like by just booting the cd because it's a live-cd.

Because routers are a hardware solution and can be had for less than the price of a good firewall app...

Have a sakar optical mouse that you have to push the two buttons one one USB insert and the other on the mouse, when this is done the mouse works fine and in DEVICE manager it says it it functioning PROPERLY, but when you TURN off computer and restart it will not recognize the optical mouse why is this? I have XP and service pack 2 on a Dimension 2400 Dell computer.

Well, this one is new to me, and although I've googled far and wide, and found others talking about similar issues, I haven't discovered a fix.

Last night, as usual, I hibernated my computer and walked away. Sometimes the charmers at Microsoft decide to install updates and restart my computer without telling me instead of hibernating. That appears to be what happened, because this morning I turned my computer on and it did a full start up.

When it got all started, the problems began. First, there was an update "ready to install" --the notifcation is gone now and I didn't note the numbers, but there were 3 and they were .NET runtime security patches, all 3. I tried to let them install a couple times, and one at a time, and they failed each time.

Anyway, as it started I got a couple errors about not being able to start python. I'm not sure which programs use python, but I use google desktop so that was probably it, although the google sidebar opened, so maybe it was the indexing service or something that failed to load.

My startup programs ran, including Skype, but not including Dropbox which normally starts automatically.

The first thing I did was try to start a web BROWSER. It did nothing. I thought maybe it was just startup silliness, so I waited a moment, and tried again. I clicked, it flashed the waiting icon as though it was doing something, but then it did nothing.

I tried Firefox, Chrome, eventually IE, then I fired up the task manager to watch what happened when I clicked the icon. Nothing happens --I click, it thinks for a sec, then does nothing, and nothing shows in the task manager.

I tried to run Word, Excel, Photoshop, a few other things, all the same. I tried running a time organizing program I wrote in C# and that actually WORKED, but I don't know why. Thought maybe the .net program running might be a clue. Also interesting is that even though Dropbox didn't load on startup, I could launch it, it's up and running without an issue.

Two rundll errors came up as I started up-- one was about an error loading GoogleServivces.dll and the other was about GrooveUtils.dll, both said "invalid access to MEMORY location."

I began to tinker and read up on fixes. I ran a registry fix I found online to make exes execute properly, but that did nothing. I read about a virus that changes the exefiles/shell run command in the registry to load through the virus file, so I checked that out but the entry looked clean (something like "%1" %*)

I read about someone else who mentioned not being able to open Word, but that if they clicked on a word document, it would open. I tried it, and yes, if I click a word doc, Word will open.

Also a little interesting possibly, is that when I try to launch Excel, it gives a message box titled "Error": The operating system is not presently configured to run this application. No other programs give that message when I try to open them.

Windows Explorer will run and windows search runs. my rundll.exe is where it should be.

The latest development that allowed me to open arbitrary software on this computer (I'm writing this message now on the borked computer), is that if I navigate in windows explorer to the executable, say firefox.exe, and I right click, then click "Run As," I'm presented with the option to run it as the current use or another user. If I leave it on the current user, and uncheck the option to "protect my computer and DATA from unauthorized program activity" then any program will run.

Did something get corrupted during an update? I run Avira and Online Armor, but I shut both down to rule those out as stopping the programs from executing.

I'm at a loss, not sure where to go. I think I have my windows CD around, but I'm sure. I REALLY don't want to wipe it, because there's so many settings, and SSOOOOO very much data I'd have to backup, it'll be very, very painful. I'm hoping for a fix other than the nuclear option. What do you think?Find your XP CD...
Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Let it run to completion...remove the CD and re-boot.

When sfc completed, it closed and didn't say anything more. Nothing was different on my machine, so I restarted.

On start up I got two error messages in a row from Dropbox:

Invalid access to memory location.
LoadLibrary(pythondll) failed

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Dropbox\bin\PYTHON25.DLL

notepad would sort of open--I'd see a flash of it, and whatever file I'd opened, but then it would close immediately. Tried opening via file, and opening via Start>run. I opened it on the cmd prompt and it ran fine.

Browsers won't open now using the Run As method that worked before.

Update notification is back, trying to get updates:

All of them failed once again.

As I was trying to execute firefox from the command prompt, FF opened on its own, I guess from a previous attempt that I thought failed, but was actually just severely delayed?

I did DISCOVER that I can reliably launch whatever I want from the cmd prompt.

Any clue what's going on?Did you try system restore?

2. Boot from created disk.
At first screen click on Repair your computer:

This will bring you to a new screen where the repair process will look for all Windows Vista installations on your computer. When done you will be presented with the System Recovery Options dialog box:

After this, it will PRESENT you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt:

Try System Restore, first.
If that doesn't work, try Startup Repair.est way is to get hold of the Vista SP2 integrated . iso and clean install.

You can save the existing data into a folder called Windows.old.
To do that , do not format the partition you wish to install to - just click on it and you will get that option.

Otherwise, you can try BOOTING to Safe Mode and select Last known Good Configuration.

Or boot the Vista dvd to sytem recovery options and system restore to before the problem started.

Or Boot the Vista dvd to the system recovery options command prompt and replace the REGISTRY manually.

Hello all! Long time reader first time poster. Great website with a wealth of information though I couldn't find anything directly related to my issues so I decided to post & hopefully I'm in the right forum.

1) My computer has become increasingly slower over the past few months and I was curious if there's a way to SPEED up the start-up/loading time by scanning and disabling any 'background' programs that I may not need? I REGULARLY RUN AVG scans as well as Malware as a precaution because this is the same behavior that I experienced a year ago before I had to replace the hard drive due to a virus.

2) On a much lesser note my Adobe Flash player keeps timing out while on Facebook for some reason & I've cleared my cache, cookies & uninstalled/reinstalled it several times. Oddly enough, for example, I can access games like Farmvlle, which is Flash heavy, with one account but not another on the same computer so I'm not sure why I'm having issues.

I'm sure that I'll need to provide more information but here's my basic info:

I am trying to find out how I can use the IF function to display results in a specific CELL, for EXAMPLE; if cell a1>20 then I WANT the True to appear in cell k2, if the answer is false then appear in k3. I am having no trouble using the standard IF function but I have no idea how to go about building on it (SORRY). I am currently using Excel 2003.

I want to remove all McAfee program files from my computer. It was pre-installed ORIGINALLY. Some of the files are hopelessly corrupted and I cannot remove the program using the control panel or program manager. What is the correct DOS command path to remove these files? Thanks for the tip on Revo Uninstaller. It's an excellent utility... however, it can't uninstall McAfee. Apparently, Revo relys on the resident uninstaller. In this case, that part of the program is so broken it just won't run. I'm out of ideas. I know that eventually I'll get rid of it, especially with help from the forum.

I have problems with the splendid program Ditto because my particular configuration.
I would LIKE an alternative of clipboard

There are many freeware clipboard utilities. I don't know which ones meet your requirements. You may need to browse through various sources. hey. im having an issue with itunes. i want to upgrade to VERSION 9 but when i try to i got a MESSAGE about quicktime. so i tryed to upgrade quicktime, but it said that i had an instalation ALREADY ruinning which i didnt. i was confused so i tryed to uninstalll bout quicktime and itunes but it said that i had something installing that had to do with this program. again, i didnt. im totally messed up. The windows Task does not do a good job in ID'ing all the PROCESSES that are running.
Does anyone know of a good utiltiy that will do it?
Also, If i see that my CPU usage is maxed, how do I fix that without reboating the system.First, with Vista/7, task manager doesn't show all process unless you explicitly say "Show Processes from All users" If I recall, it's a checkbox in the lower LEFT in Vista and a button on 7.

Okay, here's an interesting bug thing I found in Virtual PC...

Make a new Virtual Machine, name it: Windows 2K.

Then, go to Memory, SET Memory to 386.

I think I selected Advanced options instead of Harddrive file, select that if it don't work.

Start up that VPC called Windows 2K.

It will Open a window, first text you'll read will say something like:

Microsoft Boot loader or something like that...

Then, you will see a BIOS screen:

PXE BOOT LOADER

ArgonTechnology.com
Client *something something* ##### ....

MAC ADDR ( And it will spin like: \ | / - \ | / .... And continue...

This is basically it trying to network boot, but it's unable too...
And god this reminds me of that SCARY as *censored* CIH worm...
THe one that corrupts your BIOS...
Since it is in a virtual Machine, it shouldnt affect the real BIOS...


This is one of the weirdest things I have found in Virtual PC.. I have yet to FIND out if this is a cause of a virus or what... But my other VPC still works same...

Q and then the stupid PXE loader 'BIOS' came up... :/

Anyways, Hope on getting to the bottom of this, and I pray that my REAL BIOS was not flashed... Otherwise make me a grave and my casket the blue screen of death... THis happens in VMWare as well if the OS boot volume is absent. It's not "scary", it's just the virtual machine trying to boot.

Yeah, if it's annoying, then disable it or don't bother to enable it. As far as slowing down older computers, I haven't noticed that on the computer on which I'm running Win 7, and it's a 5 1/2 years or more old Pentium IV, with 2GB of RAM.

So I run the program called Vista Transformation Pack from BelchFire and I end up getting a message saying

hi to all ... i copied some text from pdf file and pasted in MS word. i WANT to arrange that text lines one by one in simple paragraph. you can see in images. i do it manually by ''spacebar'' and ''delete button'' it takes bug time when i arrange 300 PAGES. is there is formatting tip for arranging text in one paragraph. i want only all lines one by one. im building an arcade, and have just procured a laptop from a buddy. its loaded full of crap, and i dont have the bootdiscs. i dont care LITERALLY about anything on it, i want this thing to run absolute bare essentials so i can just boot my emulators and be done with it. whats the easiest way to wipe all this without going through step by step and manually deleting everything (which i know ill miss some stuff)

i went digging around the house and found boot discs for other computers, among them some MDG ones for an xp media center edition. could i use that on the toshiba to wipe it?

The quickest and easiest way is to firstly format your hard drive, and then you need to install the operating system again. Then it will be in top condition for selling since it will run much faster. Hope this helps

I just got BS Player and it works great but I opened the EQ WINDOW you know WARE you ajust how the sound levels are set.

I forgot how I opened it how do I close the EQ window it there is no X Always best to start with the 'help' FILE with the product first. Search help for Equaliser. I don't have the product so that is as far as I can help.

My MD has asked me to create what he considers to be a 'simple' db in Access for us to store the location of some keys (that we use for testing locks).

Problem is, it's been ages since i did anything like this and just don't know where to start (and i suspect it's not as easy as he thinks).

This is the BRIEF he's given me:

On having an order that requires a master key the operator is able to go to a database and select ‘search for key’ he then scans the barcode of the lock differ from the order. The database then either gives the location of the key (e.g. Cabinet 1, DRAW 2, row 3, column 2) or tells the operator that there isn’t a key or that the key has been removed from storage.
The operator then finds the key and scans a barcode ATTACHED to the key to confirm he has removed the key.
The database now stores the fact the key has been taken
When the key returns back (or a new key is produced) the operator tells the database he wants a location for a key and scans the barcode on the key. The database gives the operator a location, this location does not need to be the same location as before.


I envisage it being just one table with two fields "MasterKeyDiffer" and "Location"

My problem is how do i get the db to search and find the relevant key (or flag that one doesn't exist), and then when it comes to putting it back, select an appropriate location?

I assume some sort of code is required.

I want to back up my hard DRIVE to an external hard drive. I have 3 partitions on my PC. C is for windows and D and E are for music, movies and documents. I'm using Vista 64 BIT and my external hard drive doesn't come with any software. I've never done anything like this before so I would like something as simple as possible.

What's a good program for a noob?Well, what you could do is ZIP everything and then copy it to a harddrive....How would weekly updates work then? I'm thinking I would have to erase the zip files and start from scratch every week. I have 600 GB of stuff to backup so far.Oh.... LOL

I use Firefox(3.6) and every time I try to download something from the Internet the process begins and then will stop suddenly. Nothing I do will allow me to complete the download. But on RARE occasions,for reasons I
don't understand a download will complete. I do not know why. I have a DELL DIMENSION E310 if that is of any significance.Start to isolate the problem, i.e. does the problem lie with Firefox, your internet connection, etc.

About 15yrs ago I saved some INFO on F/D in Claris Works. I would like to be able to access it again. So far not been able to read if in WINDOWS 7 or WIN XP Pro. But the original computer it was saved on was WIN 3.1, so I now have another WIN 3.1 computer and have tried to install Claris Works in it. But all that comes up from the Claris Works back up disks is a message that the F/D is not formatted.
As I did not put the Claris Works in the original WIN 3.1 computer can anyone suggest how I can get it to read the backup disks, or does it just mean that the backup disks are no longer any use? If so is there a WAY to read the files in WINDOWS 7 or WIN XP Pro SP3 please?

Just to make clear, I am writing about TWO different sets of disks here. The Backup ones (3 disks) to try and install Claris Works, and some with info from Claris works stored on.

The WIN 3.1 Computer is:

The Claris backup F/D are a different set from the ones with the info on.
I can see the files I want to access, but can't open them. Tried in Wordpad, Open Office, ABi Word. Tried on WINDOWS 7, WIN XP Pro SP3 and WIN 3.1 machines.
I can't see the ClarisWorks back up disks on any of these machines, I just get "Disk not Formatted" come up. I was given the Clarisworks backup disks and have just been told they were originally used on a MAC. Is Claris for MAC the same as for a PC please? If not, I guess that might be why I can't see the backup disks, though the person who handed them to me said they were the same.Usually, a particular copy of a software program will not run on on both Mac and Windows. The software makers design different versions of their software for different operating systems. So, if that Claris Works program on the floppies was for Mac, it probably won't work on any Windows system.

About the only suggestion I can come up with now is to watch ebay.com for an auction for Claris Works, buy it, install it, and see whether you can open those files you want to open. I have a friend whos Office 2007 Word spell checker no longer works. The other profiles spell checker on the same machine works fine. Other then this problem the machine seems to be fine.

I need to run an analysis on data and the format my data needs to be in appears like this in excel (it has no actual file type). I have imaginary numbers.

In word it looks like this (ignore the data in the parenthesis)... the spaces between imaginary numbers are tabs but I can seem to replace spaces with TAB in word... TAB just moves the cursor to "FIND" rather than puts it in the "replace" box.

In excel or works spreadsheet it appears as 6 columns of data when I need it to be written (replace (TAB) with TAB spaces SINCE I can't SHOW them here):

The data I have doesn't have the + between imaginary numbers... I was able to USE Word, replace, etc but there are parts (at the end of lines that have spaces but no tab) that Word refuses to replace with commas (I was trying to make a csv) then convert it from there.

Anyone know how to do that?it's a bit difficult for readers to have to count/remember/ series of 0's and place them on the board so t speak. so if you could give an example with more differentiated data, it would help to SEE where the stuff is. You could do this by multiplying all the values by the same set number, like, 10,000 ?

Also for clarity, to be sure what we are dealing with, please load your spreadsheet in Excel, save it as a text file (.txt, or .csv) then list it on your post, using copy/paste on the whole data? Most likely you will see yourself that it can then be edited easily in Notepad this way. (I'd say, ...stay away from Word when just manipulating data!)

I uninstalled MS Office 2000 using the Add/Remove option and I found that there were still FILES of the software left on the registry. I ran CCleaner and NORTON Registry cleaner but the files are still in the registry.

So, i did the stupid Noob THING, manually deleted a folder named "office" from the REGEDIT. I started to look around a bit and found that there were still MS Office files in the REG. I didn't want to go crazy and delete them all, so i decided to do a do a System Restore so that I could get MS Office back but I got this error message when it rebooted:

"System restore did not complete successfully. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore"

I want to restore MS Office so that I can us a program like REVO to get RID of it.

What can I do?

Secondly, you can't restore any program, using system restore. System restore deals with system (Windows) files only.

How come is the only option? You can patch it from other languages, can't you?You chose when you installed, you can't change this afterwards. I repeat, no way around this problem other than re-installing your system with the preferred language version of Windows.

Sometimes it is better to fill in an APPLICATION form in PDF format first before printing it out.
I don't know if there is any free software for me to write something in a PDF file.

I am running Outlook 2010 on a WINDOWS 7 machine. Our email is provided with an Exchange Server running Exchange 2003. Our department has been testing Outlook 2010 before we ROLL it our to the rest of the company and have noticed something we would like to have disabled before doing so.

In Outlook 2010, when you CREATE a NEW email there is a FROM button right above the TO button. When I click on this button I am able to put in the email address of anyone else at the company and send it as though I were them (email addresses from an external source will not send). I do not have delegate permissions for anyone else and there is no way that I can tell to determine who it is actually from on the recipients side. Obviously this could be problematic if it were abused and so we would like to disable it.

Does anyone have any advice?

My computer is an HP Pavillion dv9000 with around 3 GB RAM and 300 GB hard drive space. That may not help in my SITUATION because when I start my computer, it all loads fine. You hear the tune of windows Vista and it BRINGS me to the login screen to put in my password (It's VIsta Home Premium to be specific). I input my password and it logs in. It then brings me to a black page with only my cursor showing. I CAN run task manager and when I check how many processes I'm running, I'm only running 9 processes:

This black screen happened after I ran system restore due to my computer becoming so slow that it could be deemed unresponsive. Since that didn't work out, I started my computer and PRESSED F8 continuously and reran system restore to a point farther back in time. That didn't fix a thing and now I'm stuck only with these 9 processes, my task manager, my cursor, the login screen, and the vista symbol at the beginning. I'm on a secondary computer posting this because my first one is completely useless at the moment.

What should I do to fix it? Please help. Thank you in advance for reading my post thus far.I had essentially the same issue not long ago and it resulted from a conflict with the attempted use of some software. The company that created the software eventually determined it WAS a problem of conflict with their software.They provided me with an ISO image that enabled me to "restore the MBR" (master boot record). I do not know if this could be where your issue and solution lie but i mention it in case another higher pay grade CH member might see this as a solution to your problem and give you more complete guidance to enable you to do it. I CURRENTLY have the autorun.inf virus on my computer, so I created a folder named "Autorun.inf" to stop it from reappearing.

But, I want my USB to have a different autorun.inf FILE that OPENS up a setup on boot(I want to use it instead of a disc, because I don't have a big enough disc.)

If I made a differently named autorun file, and still had
