hi guys!, can anyone give SOFTWARE that can disable internet download, disable installing program, hide drives and others... option plsss.set your internet option in control panel and make it block all cookies unplug your cd rom
if you don't want somebody else downloading something tell them not to and if they do you can always set a password for your computer you could also set a NETWORK password and i don't think there's any program that blocks cds from being downloaded i don't even think a guest account you can block from downloading cdsAll of these functions and MANY more options are AVAILABLE thru ADMINISTRATOR Tools in Control Panel.

I have been looking on eBay for a USB video capture device that uses the types of inputs that a TV would use. I was THINKING of wanting to capture playthroughs of old video games from the late 80s and early 90s, on a system that has a resolution of 256x240. The system I'm talking about is the Nintendo Entertainment System, also known as the NES, which had the game Super Mario Bros. among many titles. Would it be possible to capture the video without problems?hmm, well, if your looking for something like a TV tuner, generally there is a very noticeable delay from the time the card receives it's input to when it is shown on-screen. (obvious if you have a television and a PC with the capture device).

Another alternative would be emulation. Unfortunately while the emulator programs (such as NEStopia, NEStron, etc) are perfectly legal, the ROM files that are required to play games are copyright and therefore downloading them is considered pirating.

The output will be straight from a 20-inch CRT TV with RCA outputs. (Yellow, white and red.) The gaming console is connected to the TV in the same way.

I am completely against emulation, thus that's not a choice I will make.you'll likely be subject to the "Lag" issue.

Also why connect the console to the TV and then connect the tuner via the Television? Why not go straight from console to Tuner?I'll probably try both ways. Right now, I don't have a device in which I can record from the gaming console to the computer, so I'll have to wait.

I have RECEIVED my USB 2.0 video capture device, and have successfully made a recording from my NES. The recording was Super Mario Bros. The software that was used was Ulead Video Studio SE DVD. The USB video capture device is the EasyCap 2.1C. I have to mention that I was not subjected to the lag issue even with the TV's output jacks hooked up to the computer through the USB device. However, I waited for the video counter to start up before turning the NES on. It wasn't necessary with Super Mario Bros., but is useful with some of my other games, like Mega Man 3. (The music starts as soon as the system is powered on.)

Here was the mode I used:
File format: MPEG
MPEG Type: MPEG-2
TV System: NTSC
Frame rate: 30 fps
Frame size: 720x480
Deinterlacing: Yes
Bit rate: Constant
Video data rate: 9500 kbps
Audio data rate: 384 kbps, 44100 khz, stereo

Note: The NES has mono sound, thus it doesn't come out in stereo regardless of whether the sound is set to stereo or mono. That'll be a DIFFERENT story with the Super NES.

I have to say that the above settings were the best I could use to get a REASONABLE file size without lag in the video. In order to get sharp video from the NES though, I had to use a special video cable from Radioshack that went straight from composite to s-video. That enabled the best picture quality.

Despite my efforts, the resulting video had audio lag. I'm going to have to try something different. I won't go directly to the computer unless using the TV gives lag regardless, and I won't do uncompressed AVI movies unless the game will take under an hour to complete. (Such as Mega Man or Mega Man 2, or Super Mario Bros. without playing the hard mode.) If I am forced to play it using the computer directly, I might attempt to bring a CRT monitor out of the basement to get better response from the games.


BC_Programmer, this is my final post in our discussion.

I have noticed that there is lag in the audio of my video regardless of the video format if I connect the TV to the computer. I'm going to connect the console directly to the computer instead, bypassing the TV. If I get any delay in control using my LCD monitor, I'm going to shut the computer down and bring up a CRT.

The CRT was no help, as I had the same issues recording the game directly to the computer as I did with the LCD. However, I found a lagless way to record the game to the computer when the console was hooked up to the TV. Guess what I did? I found out what the problem with the audio going out of SYNC with the video was. The software I was using, Ulead VideoStudio SE DVD, had some issues that resulted in the audio lag. However, when using Roxio VideoWave, no problems occurred. I was able to tell this in my test video of "Super Mario Bros." because I noticed that the sound was right on in World 2-2. (The sound played immediately when the coins were grabbed, and I also heard the exit/hurt sound effect right when Mario entered the pipe at the end of the level. The timing was exactly the way it was when I was playing the game.

The problem is solved. Not only that, but being able to record it while playing the game on a CRT TV set means I can get the play control that I need to play the games at my best.

Well, I don't have internet at home. So I use the computers at my library.
There's a program I WANT to download, and I was wondering if there's any way to maybe put it on a flash drive and be able to take it home and then download it onto my computer at home.

Is there a way to do that?The library PC MAY not allow this...

My computer is running on Windows XP, preloaded by the manufacturer, and MS Office 97 Pro and MS Publisher 2000 were installed at a LATER date.

After a harddrive CRASH and replacement by a local computer specialist it is now running MS Office 2003, including Publisher. As a result I am now getting MS's message that the software is not genuine.

Perhaps that app saved a backup copy when it was edited/created...patio, Not too positive about all the pdf files but i believe most of them were probably downloaded instruction manuals for various tools or equipment that i garnered from the internet (as pdf files) and saved for posterity (which i now know can be a very short time) on my flash drive. Here Ya Go...patio, Followed your link. In my case on the particular computer i always used for that "movie" flash drive it is located on my "G" drive. However i get the impression from your link that for that "auto save " feature to have worked i would have had to "enable" it which of course because at that time i did not know of it's availability i did not do so. Now having said that there is tons of stuff however in "temp" part of the thread. Nothing that looks like an excel file though. Here is an example of something in it that seems to meet most of the criteria (it appears to be in Java) and denoting Java via the "open with" it doesn't open anything--(it is only about a 75KB file) G:\Documents and Settings\xxxx\Local Settings\Temp\e4j3.tmp_dir8948 ,truenorthLatest news flash. I've noticed in the last few weeks that when I try to manipulate files through Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) that it is very slow to respond. It takes an agonizingly long time to open, rename and delete folders and files. I've done all the usual tweaks like running virus and malware scans (with AdAware, SpyBot, MalwareBytes, ATF Cleaner, CCCleaner), disk defrag, HARD drive scan, check disk, Hijack This scan. Nothing shows up on the virus scan or HijackThis and just two or three minor things (nothing over a TAC 3) on the other scans. I have had two recent hardware manupulations, though - a new power supply and also a new cable modem. I have not installed any new software other than the updates on my COMPUTER Associates security suite (anti-virus and firewall), AdAware and SpyBot updates.
My system is an HP Pavilion 750N using Windows XP home as an OS. It has a 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 768 MB RAM.
My computer skills are not what you'd term anywhere near proficient and I'm uncomfortable making changes to the registry if unnecessary. I'm looking for some tips (and point by point instructions) on how to restore the Windows Explorer proficiency. If you need more INFO on my system, just ask. It's been known to cause slowdowns and doesn't do much to protect you anyways...You might also try this: Turn off indexing and speed up Windows XPI don't think I enabled Tea Timer. It will place a Startup icon in your Control Panel...very handy.

NOTE Do not disable any items if you are not sure of what they are...I guess its developing some bad sectors... or may just need to defrag it...

AFAIK there is no .pdf editor packaged with any version of Windows.

I think you need to convert pdf to word files with hello pdf to word converter, so you can edit it! It works well for me. PDF can't be edited. That's what it's all about. Only way I know how to edit PDF is to convert to word document and then reconvert to PDF.

I know word 2007 has a built in PDF writer (saves your doc as a PDF)

I have been using Excel for quite a while WITHOUT any problems. TODAY I got the message that Help was not installed although I had used it many times previously. It ADVISED me to put Office 2000 CD in the drive to reinstall what is missing. I got an error message to day DATA1.MSI was required to install from this CD. I used Find to check that DATA1.MSI is not on C:. I do not know what caused the problem or how to get over it. The chart bar is now missing from Excel. I have Windows 98SE and have been using Office 2000 for years.I have found that it is windows installer error 1603 which can apply to Office 2000 Professional, which is the CD I have. There is also a message that the problem is Office 2000 error 1706. The notes I have been able to find on these two errors do not help me to understand why the problem suddenly emerged.

Something to allow you to watch video on your computer (divx, mp4, etc)? yes, I agree. K-lite codec ALLOWS you to watch all video FORMAT files on your pc.You can try using the VLC Player if you don't want the Klite Pack.

Good morning! I'll get right to it. Generally when I get emails and wish to forward them, I will clean them up and get RID of extraneous forwarded addresses and other annoying tags at the bottom. This I do by CLICKING on FORWARD and then highlighting and deleting. However, there are times when there are vertical lines remaining on the left side and sometimes no matter what I do I can't seem to backspace and bring the body of the email to the top of the page. And of course there are those >>>>> things that are a pain to get rid of one by one. My computer runs Vista. I'm a radiologist and am trying to put together lectures.
The IMAGES that I use from websites sometimes have ARROWS and annotations. I would like to know a better WAY of saving the pictures from the sites (I've been using screen capture, which is not efficient) and to remove the annotations--as I will be testing the AUDIENCE and don't want them to be clued in on the abnormal findings.

okay so i have a movie that's in a foreign language, and it's split into two files, both of which are .avi's. they have their own separate subtitle tracks, but every time i want to watch the movie in vlc media player, i have to manually add the subtitle tracks. plus, having the first part cut out in the middle of an action scene is annoying. i've tried windows movie maker, but it says my computer doesn't have the right codec (don't know which codec it's talking about). i need some way to combine the files and embed the subtitle tracks. any help is greatly appreciated.To find the codec, you could try Gspotproblem is, i don't know which codec it's talking about, and gspot gives 719 VIDEO and 245 audio compression formats.ConvertXToDVD will burn avi files ALONG with subs to DVD.

You don't even have to burn actual DVD.
Burning PROGRAM, converts .avi file to DVD format, first, creating a folder video_TS with .VOB files in it.

I have a file that gets exported daily. It always ends with todays date, i.e. support_20090929.csv. I've tried several variables to pull in the current date each day in my ftp batch file without any luck. Below are some examples of what I've tried. Try to explain what you want in some more detail.Its taking the file from my server and ftp'ing it to another vendor...what I do currently is change the date manually everytime. Below is the .bat file code and the ftp.txt file it calls is below that. I'm trying to find code that will replace the 20090929 each day with the current date so that I don't have to KEY it manully each TIME.

OK. The problem appears to occur because FTP is unable to expand the variable. You may need to CALL the PUT command. Something like:

Change your FTP to use the mput comand.

If you only want to send todays file then setup a temp folder to move all the old stuff out of the working folder leaving todays file only. After the FTP move the file to the temp folder for storage and start a new blank file for the next day.

While running the installation program on my Dell DIMENSION E521 desktop using Windows XP I keep getting the exception"setup cannot continue because an unexpected error has occurred". I have a new computer Dell Vostro 220s running Vista and I am unable to connect my printer(HP All-in-One C5180). I have d-loaded the software from HP for the Vista installation. The installation appears to be going well until it tells me to hook up the printer. That's where it STALLS. Nothing happens after that. I've talked with the online help at HP and installed and uninstalled the software three times all with the same result. Their online help amounts to telling me how to uninstall and then install the software. Even though software appears to have successfully installed, it still may not work right. That's why, with some software, you need to right-click the program, and then click Run As Administrator. I'd try it; you've got nothing to lose.

I'd return the printer for a replacement if it's still new...

Hi everyone, I'm new here and I'm not sure this is the place for this question, but here I go, I'm sort of DESPERATE!

I have been trying to make a database that relates two tables by using an ID number as a primary field. How on earth do I make it understand that for every record in Table1, there must be a record in Table2 with the same ID number? I just enter data in Table1 (automatically defining an ID number for the record), but on Table 2, there appears no record! The relationship between the tables is a one-to-one relationship between the ID number field in Table 1 (primary key) and the ID number field in Table 2 (foreign key). I have also clicked the options Enforce Referential Integrity and Cascade Delete Related Records, what am I missing here?

Let me be more clear: In Table1 I have as fields the IDNumber, First Name, Last Name, Address information, etc, about a list of students. In Table2, I have as fields the IDNumber, FirstName, LastName (same as in Table1), and other fields related to academic performance of those students (I used different tables for this because I was asked to do so by my Computer Science teacher, since this is a school project).

The problem is that when I enter a new record (new student) in Table 1, there is no record APPEARING for that student in Table2. Advent T9408, Intel Core2 CPU, 320GB,1.8GHz, Vista home premium.

When in 'My documents' I am able to open files and delete anything within each document, but every time I TRY to delete a FULL or empty file I get a box open stating 'The action can't be completed because the folder is open in another programme' (Close the folder and try again) - which I do, but still can not delete the folder.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

The files aren't important or vital to the running of the computer, they are simply files created to hold information until a job is done which then can be discarded.More info on the app that is creating these files will be helpful on finding an easy way to do this.Forgive me for being thick here, I don't fully understand - these are ordinary files which hold a variety of documents lifted or created by myself from a variety of programmes or from articles downloaded and used elsewhere then later discarded.

3) Uncheck the boxes next to "Font" and "Macro TOOLS" and click "OK".

Recently I tried to open a .pps file attachment to an email and I received the following message: The converter failed to save the file.

I assumed that my VERSION of Power Point Viewer 7 was corrupted for whatever reason, and downloaded and installed it again. I had previously downloaded the service pack that went with it.

Tried to open the same file and I got the same message. I then tried opening .pps files that I've had on my COMPUTER for eons and I got the same message.

I don't know if this is coincidence or not, but I had been having problems with my router (Buffalo Air STATION Turbo G) not letting me connect with the hughesnet SATELLITE so I disconnected the router and went directly from the satellite modem to the back of my computer. I would like MS Outlook to show the progress / error report panel whenever I do a send / receive. It used to do this but has stopped. I have searched just about every obvious option in the menus and used the Help to try to find where you set it to display but can not find it. I tried to do a backup of my computer and about 1/4 of the way through a blue screen came on and said something about an adaware stopping it from backing up. I have Vista. Is there some way I can hold a key down to keep the blue screen on so I can read it all the way through? And I have not added anything stated adaware and I can't find anything on my computer that says adaware. I've looked at all my programs and nothing says adaware. I've run a VIRUS scan, that came out clean. So here I am not knowing what to do at this point. Can anyone help with some advice? (And, YES, Broni, it's me the computer-stupid girl!)

Hi all I am a retired old dog trying to learn new tricks. I have a Dell Inspiron running VISTA basic. I have recently bought a new CAMERA. It takes still photos and videos, the video files are taken USING MOV format. I have a program that will convert MOV to AVI. What I want to do is burn still photos, vido clips,and music on to a DVD and play it back through a DVD player. I know all this can be done using programs on Vista Premium but it will cost me about a £150-00 to up grade. I have been told that Nero 9 £40-00 may do the JOB but I might have problems adding the music files now I am being told that updating to Windows 7 £90-00 is what I need to do Can any body help.
Finally I cliked on to the chat on this SITE the other day to try and pick up some tips I did not join in on any discussion I was just sitting on the side looking in when I tried to do the same later I found I have been banned what have I done wrong.

We running outlook 2003, OS XP, Exchange Server.

The companies policy is that one user should have two email acounts one personal eg (JOHN.Simth) and the other one is solely for work purpose eg (it.tech). Lets assume John Simth is the IT TECHNICIAN. He will be using his personal and the it.tech.

He logs in to the domain with his user account john.smith and never with the it.tech account.

The configuration is that after log in with his account he should be able to access both outlook profiles. The it.tech stays on top on All Mail Folders and john.smith on the bottom.

what we did was we delegated permission to john.Smith to send and receive email on behalf of the it.tech. That works just fine

The ISSUE we having is that whenever we send or DELETE emails they all go to just one deleted or sent item folder of the top profile in this case it.tech.

How can we stop this from happening, each profile having its own sent item on its folder instead of all of them ending up on just one?

Ok I have windows 7 and it SUCKS for gaming. Every game I play crashes. So, I decided to get a second partition. I have windows vista sp2. I was wanting to KNOW the steps that I have to do to get my computer ready to have two partitions and then what do I need to do to install it. I know how to boot the install cd but is there ANYTHING that I should know.

I'm currently running a 32 bit Windows XP OS. I'm going to upgrade to Win 7 when it comes out, but I don't know if I should do 32 or 64 bit.

I ran CPUID's CPU-Z which indicated that my PROCESSOR at least could run 64 bit. (i.e. EM64T). I have 4 GB RAM and my motherboard is Gigabyte P35-DS3L.

Is it even worth it upgrading, or should I not bother?

Most users are very disappointed by installing Vista x64. The lack of 64-bit drivers for most current hardware is the catch. The performance gains promised by 64-bit will not be here for three years.

And by then there will be another new thing.
They might even tell us that 48 bit is the best answer!
And somebody will have a registry cleaner that removes the un-needed bits!

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

"upgrading" software to run as a 64-bit application is as simple as setting a compiler flag.

Or, it would be, if half the developers for said companies knew their <censored> from a hole in the ground (exaggeration).

Most of the "problems" with conversion from 32-bit to 64-bit are exactly the same problems that arose with the switch to 32-bit.

For example- All handles on 64-bit windows are 64 bits wide. This shouldn't be a problem, since the SDK typedef's HANDLE too 16 bits with the 16-bit SDK, 32-bits with the Win32 SDK, and 64-bits with Win64. the Problem is the programmers who assume that the size they are familar with will ALWAYS be the same size. If that was the case, why the <censored> would MS have put the typedef in?

they write code segments like this:

(probably wouldn't compile, but the idea is it's trying to copy data from immediately after a handle value. notice the +4? 4 bytes = 32 bits, the size, that hte programmer is assuming will always be the same size. This exact same type of code, with a +2 and using "memcpy" was the problem with windows 16-bit to 32-bit shift.

It's LAZY. It's documented thoroughly in the SDK NOT to rely on the size of the HANDLE types, and to instead use sizeof- as in, instead of 4, or 2, or 8 (with x64) just use SizeOf(HANDLE). And no, they cannot say they were "under pressure" to get the project done. They knew how big they thought the handle was going to be, so why not just use the bloody documented method.

Which brings up another point, the very thing that my example was trying to do was copy the window structure from memory. the window structure is not documented. Anywhere. Almost every version of windows changes it, and therefore so too does the size change. the structure name I used was made up- there is no structure, since as I said- it's undocumented.

This is the SECOND biggest problem with windows software development. Developers trying to use undocumented features of an older OS and then wondering why the behaviour has changed in a later version. This wouldn't be so bad if it was actually attributed to the software company whose product has these issues- but no, it's not. It's a problem with the new OS. So what happens? MS adds compatibility shims to make the program work. And now everybody says the "compatibility shims are bloat".. and they are. So with Vista, they scrapped a whole bunch. programs stop working. Guess whose fault it is... AGAIN?


the windows 3.1 SDK even has comments in the headers regarding shifts in bit widths that were being expected. <censored>, Windows NT 3.1 ran on the Alpha, and that was a 64-bit architecture.


Back to the topic of software firms and upgrading their applications to x64- basically, if they had been developing their applications properly all along, they shouldn't need to do nearly anything to get them working on x64. just a recompile. Of course for reasons I just noted this is not the case.

Even so- wether a Application is 32-bit or 64-bit is somewhat redundant, Worst case scenario is that explorer.exe, services, the kernel, system DLL's, and everything of that sort are all 64-bit running on a 64-bit OS, and your applications are 32-bit. Even so,the applications still get performance gains from the faster x64 kernel.

Additionally, while it is true that a number of applications do not have 64-bit equivalents, it's also true that the very same thing occured with the switch to 32-bit. Programs that SHOULD have required a simple flag switch to their compiler or in their makefile to switch to 32-bit required years of overhaul to strip out the parts of the code written by those who assume 16-bit was forever.

There are browsers for x64. IE64, Minefield, etc. The problem is that these are buggy for the reasons stated above- and their plugins don't work since they aren't converted themselves. (again, striking parallel to the 16-bit to 32-bit switch, namely Office add-ins needed 32-bit versions, if they didn't have one you were out of luck on your 32-bit OS.

I cannot even think of a reason that a 32-bit application would fail on a x64 OS. to be honest my experience has felt more like a 32-bit machine with the ability to also run x64 programs the 32 bit WOW layer is much better then the earlier incarnations of the Windows On Windows emulation layer designed to run 16-bit applications.

Even AS a 32-bit application, it's possible for 32-bit programs to use 64-bit features, through a process known as thunking. I'm not sure of the specifics regarding x64, but with the 16-bit to 32-bit switch "thunking" was used generally to enable the creation of a 32-bit application while still using 16-bit components, or the use of 32-bit components with 16-bit applications. it was buggy, sure... but really, it was either that, or the manufacturers actually read the SDK documentation. That could take forever. much better to pay their developers overtime to setup a complex thunking layer then learn how to do things properly.


The main drawback of x64 is that 16-bit applications will no longer run, instead giving the message:

But, again- if a developer cannot even be bothered to update their application to 32-bits- are they worth sticking with? Although it's true that many firms are still having success with DOS applications and windows 3.1 management software. too them, the real question is, do they need 64-bit? Do they even need 32-bit machines? No- unless they are willing to commit to updated versions of the software, retraining employees about the differences between the new system and the system those employees have become used to for years, willing to iron out the inevitable issues, etc. The reason most of these firms have not upgraded is simple- they have a system that works, and really- if a 40 Mhz 386 can handle the light load of transferring E-mail between departments, is it worth the cost to upgrade it to a Quad core server or something? Not really.

Another problem is the more common, and even, on the surface, more logical, method of replacing things when they break with new hardware. For example, the aforementioned 386. Perhaps it's hard drive or drive controller failed, and finding a replacement would be both difficult and costly. Therefore- it seems logical in that instance to update the hardware (and software).

And this makes sense. Until we account for the fact that the 386 was communicating over a token Ring network with multiple low-traffic 386 file servers. So their network cards would need to be replaced to match the ethernet that is essentially the only option for the new PC, which may have only PCI-E connectors. (your not going to find a PCI-E token ring card, I don't think!). But guess what- ISA cards are both expensive and hard to come by.

So what might happen? the file servers become dormant, the new mail bridge cannot be used, and departments start arguing about their e-mails being ignored. the company collapses! All for want of a shiny new intranet mail server.

OK, so maybe it's a slight exxaggeration. The point is, companies think they can get there in "small steps" but they can't- depending on the age of their infrastructure they might even need to renovate their offices. When you try to sit on the bleeding edge you can often get a bloody <censored>.

RTOI...return on investment....it doesn't pay to have software engineers upgrading software to use the 64 bits in a system if noone is using it...most are still using 16/32 bits...

I have a Toshiba Equim Laptop P200D, Twin (2x40 GB) Athlon processor. My problem is, which DRIVES me to distraction, is that the Vista C memory is CONTINUALLY running at around 90% capacity, whilst the Vista E is only at 20% usage. Despite defragging, disc cleaning , i cannot get the usage down on C and utilise E. Where poss any new stuff I Save to E but is there any way I can make better use of the two halves- it seems a waste, that in effect the majority of work is being carried out on the one half of the processor.

I would like clarification or explanation on this issue. I have a disc that allows me to use a license three times. I have used it twice and am preparing to install the software on a third computer. My BOSS said that I should know that we would be getting rid of one of the computers soon and should save that third load. I informed her that while I would notify the vendor of the action, the disc itself has no way of noting the number of LOADS. She disagrees. Outside of VERIFICATION over a network using the number of times a key was used, is there any way for a program to know how MANY times it has been loaded?

I have very important software. It can install in other computer (Intel pentium III win XP,). But not in my computer(Intel Celeron IV 2.26GHz Win XP). The error message is "Module C:\festival\festival\win32\FestivalHLDiphone.dll failed to REGISTER. HRESULT -2147024770. Contact your support personal". Have you tried following the advice given in the error message to Contact your support personal? The UCSC page linked by you contains a Contact Us link.

I need to know if there is existing commercial SOFTWARE for storing and retrieving "LESSONS learned" during/after projects. The projects COULD be IT, engineering, construction, and not industry specific. I specifically need a LIST of the name of the software and/or a link to its web page.

Any feedback would be much APPRECIATED!!!

If its not industry specific, then i recommend a pen and paper. I was always told to make notes during everything i did.
