Solve : Something has changed...?

Answer»

When I went to update my adobe flash player, everything went sour, and the more I TRY to fix it, the worse it gets. I'm not finding any viruses or malware, using HIJACK This, Online Armor. MBAM, SAS, CC cleaner. Hijack this says:"For some reason, your system denied access to the Hosts file. If any Hijacked domains are in this file, Hijackthis may not be able to fix this." I don't remember touching anything to any Hosts file. Internet explorer is taking 5 minutes to load a page. Running Windows 7.Do you USE an anti virus app? Have you RUN a full system scan with it?

Solve : best way to backup my laptop hard drive??

Answer»

Due to recent health issues I've sold all my computers except my HP 6715b laptop with 320 GB HD and I also have a 320 GB SATA desktop HD mounted in a USB external enclosure. I also have a 250 GB laptop hard drive that will work in this laptop (if needed).
I do have replacement operating system CD's that I ordered for this machine from HP in Vista Professional 32 bit and 64 bit + another CD with software installed by HP from the factory.
But this machine is old and I had overheating problems with it while running Folding @ Home at 100% CPU usage several times so I don't trust it much.
So if this machine quits, what's my best bet for keeping my files for use on WHATEVER machine I can get/afford if this one fails?
As always, thanks for the help!
Mike

It is not easy to PREDICT the life of an old laptop. If heat can be controlled, the life can be many years.
You have enough mate rails to both backup and replace the hard drive.

The most frequent failure is the battery for most laptops. It can cause other problems. An unattended battery can catch fire. Not a joke! It happened a lot.

Second most frequent failure t is the hard drive. And mostly from heat build up.

When leaving your laptop alone on a project, make sure there is additional cooling.Quote from: lectrocrew on June 23, 2013, 12:11:26 AM

So if this machine quits, what's my best bet for keeping my files for use on whatever machine I can get/afford if this one fails?

Mike

If I were you, I would do a complete image backup with your favourite image program (I like Macrium Reflect for this) so that if the HDD in the laptop fails, you can restore from that and get back to exactly where you were. If the laptop gives up, you can still access the image backup as a partition from any PC with Reflect installed, and copy any files across from that - so it serves a dual purpose, as an image backup and an accessible backup of every file on the drive.
I would then back up my files individually, I use a service called Crashplan to back up online but their software is free and can be used to back up files to another PC or another drive as well as to their cloud service. There are many other programs around that can back up your files automatically, I've used and liked Cobian backup and a Microsoft tool called SyncToy as well.
I try to keep at least 3 copies of my files nowadays - one on my machine, one online via Crashplan, and one on an external drive which I have Crashplan's software handle for me too. I'm probably going to write up a small review of CRashplan in the next few days actually, I've been using it for around 6-8 months now and it's a great service, a little pricy normally but I got it on an amazing deal at the time so it's worth looking out for it. Other online backup services are available, some are free with reduced storage space or features - Microsoft Skydrive, Dropbox, Google Drive to name a few. I do feel it's worthwhile backing up online if it's feasible as it's pretty much the ultimate off-site backup.

On another note, I'm sorry to hear of your health issues, wishing you all the best. As for the laptop itself, my gf has the similar but Intel based 6710b, and we have a FAIR few 6715b's at work. I haven't seen many issues with overheating so I would suggest doing the usual routine of cleaning out dust from the heatsink and fan, if you can gain access to the heatsink itself then remove it and reseat it with fresh thermal paste as the factory stuff is probably past its best by now. That should help temperatures. My gf's 6710b copes fine with distributed computing for long periods of time. Thanks guys!
I suspect your right Geek about heat buildup being a problem for laptops. This laptop and also the two I just sold both have CPU cooling air intakes mounted on the bottom of the machine with the exhaust mounted on the side. My thought is - why would they not channel the cooling air intake and exhaust ducting both on the sides in order to provide adequate air flow when the machine is in your lap - in your lap means the clothing you have can severely limits the air flow to the air intake. I know it's actually named 'notebook pc' but many usages for some people are in their lap. I'm no computer designer but before last YEAR I worked in the industrial production machinery trade for many years and designed many systems, and I learned quickly that inefficient cooling for electrical controls, motors, hydraulics, gearboxes ect. would mean costly premature failures. But even today notebook pc's are still being produced with CPU cooling air intakes on the bottom of the machine. I must be missing something.

Thank you Calum!
Macrium Reflect worked fine and I now have my files backed up on my USB external hard drive and on Dropbox too. Can't beat the price!!!
Last year, when I was running FAH (SMP2) @ 100% on both cores with CPU overheating issues, I removed the heat sink and cleaned/ re-applied thermal paste. I still had CPU temp issues. I READ an artical somewhere back then about the 6715b having cooling design issues from the factory. So what I did was...
2 years ago I had to replace the keyboard in this machine and I still had the previous keyboard in my junk box, so I dug out that old keyboard and removed all the keys which created a metal plate with a bunch of holes. Then I bought some filter material and cut it to fit over the keyboard metal plate chassis panel. That solved my overheating issue and I ran this machine until recently fodling @ 100% with no overheating issues.
I've run a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse on this machine since then - still do.
Hopefully it will last , but just in case I appreciate your guidance on backup options!!

Thaks again to both of you!
Mike

Nice on a cold day.
But yes, cooling designs on laptops are mediocre. They get away with it because the laptop is so thin that there is less space to trap heat.Quote from: lectrocrew on June 24, 2013, 11:59:32 PM

Sounds like a decent modification actually.
As for the intake/exhaust vent design, I agree it's not ideal for when it's on your lap or a soft surface like a bed, I only ever use laptops on a hard surface so that airflow underneath is adequate and exhaust is not restricted.

Solve : Windows media player issue??

Answer»

This is on my HP 6715b laptop running windows Vista Business 32 bit. Optical drive is DVD-RW / CD-RW
I have the latest WMP v11.0 but when I try to play most DVD's via my optical drive WMP gives me an error dialog box - image attached.
This particular screen shot is with using an original store bought movie DVD.
I have the latest drivers installed for my ATI video card with resolution set @ 1024x768 .
VLC media player will open/play the video with no problem.
I've tried to install the latest WMP from Microsoft and it tells me that I already have the latest version on my machine. That Windows website also shows a list of codec packages I can download but they all cost $ which I don't have. I'd rather use VLC anyway...
And I tried to uninstall WMP via 'control panel' but I don't see a WAY to do that.
What do I try now?
As always, thanks for any help.
Mike

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]error screen attached

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Unfortunately WMP can't be totally removed in Vista and earlier versions of Windows, only from Windows 7 onwards.
I've seen this problem a few times and it can be caused by a few things.
Have a look here and see if this helps. You could also GIVE this a go. The issue is most likely not with WMP per se, but with the way WMP accesses the drive, the Fixit tool in my second link as far as I'm aware just automates things LIKE removing upper and lower filters and the mount point KEY - which is MUCH simpler than wading through the registry doing those yourself as I've had to do before! The microsoft FixIt link says 'D' drive is fine (image attached), so I'll need to try the first link you gave but give me but give me some time - I'm pretty slow on registry stuff and I've got doctors appointments for all day today so I won't post back until late tonight or tomorrow, but I'll let you know what I find ASAP.
Thanks once again for your help Calum!!!
Mike

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Alright, at least that rules out a couple of potential causes for the issue anyway.
Hopefully the first link gives better results.if you want a simple fix you can downlaod VLC media (video lan payer) that plays all movie file types, with out worrying about codex Quote from: blackrainbow on June 25, 2013, 09:46:34 AM

Solve : Temporarily name my running programs icon in the taskbar for Windows 7?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64BIT. I need to temporarily name my running programs icon in the taskbar. For example, I am running multiple notepads and I need to recognize what each running program icon in my taskbar represents. One notepad can be for this set of information while another notepad can be for another set of information. I don't want to save them to name them. I want to be able to temporarily tag or name them for this period of time while I am working. Another example, let us say that I have multiple Microsoft Excel files open where all the saved Excel files title have LONG titles. I need to be able to recognize which one I need quickly. The closest program I found that would do this is called 7+ Taskbar Numberer. It puts a 1, 2, 3 to infinity NUMBER on every running program in the taskbar on the top left of the icons. It is not customizable, so I cannot for example choose a group of running notepads to be tagged and number them 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 while another group I would number them 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. I would prefer to have the option to name and number them, but whatever I can get is acceptable as long as it is customizable. This program is not customizable with its numbering system. One last example of what I am asking for if I am still not able to make it clear of my needs is for example the add-on for Firefox called TabRenamizer. This add-on allows the user to rename the title of the tab. I can go to google.com and on the tabs name by default it is called google, but I can rename it and call it whatever I want till I close that tab. I would then have to repeat the procedure in a new tab. So in conclusion, I want to be able to temporarily name my running programs icon in the taskbar for windows 7. Why not save these temporary files so that the window title bar shows the title and then delete file(s) when finished? The idea is that I need to be able to do what I am asking. There is multiple reasons why I need this, which I don't want to get into. I am not sure if I can clearly explain why. Is there a method? The taskbar icon text of a running program is simply the window title; change that and the taskbar icon text also changes. There a plenty of free utilities to do this e.g.:

http://www.murgee.com/window-title-changer/

By the way, this sort of remark won't win you many friends on here:

Quote

The idea is that I need to be able to do what I am asking.

Here I have renamed 2 of 3 Excel windows...

Thank you Salmon Trout, this is exactly what I need and it has done the job. I will set the topic as solved. I APOLOGIZE for the way I expressed myself that might have caused an undesirable affect amongst others. I will be more alert in the future. Another happy customer...

Solve : 7 zip?

Answer»

I have Windows 7, 64 bit and I downloaded and installed 7 zip. I cannot get it to unzip 7zip files. I hooked up my old COMPUTER with Windows XP and it works fine. What did I do wrong? Thank youDid you download the 64bit version? Also did you download it from a trusted site?
You could also try Universal Extractor. Win7 has a built in zip tool...Quote from: hughii on August 07, 2013, 01:51:24 PM

I cannot get it to unzip 7zip files.

What have you tried, what happened, and what did you expect to happen?I always FACE this problem and the workaround I have found is:

Even if you installed 7zip on windows 7, be it 64 bit or 32 bit. You have to LAUNCH the 7zip application by right clicking on it and select "Run as Administrator" Select Yes in the following window. When 7zip is LAUNCHED, go to Tools >> Options>> click "select all" and click apply and ok to close that window. Now it should work.

Solve : My Pc has been murdered by Android?

Answer»

Hey everyone!

I was trying to install Android on my Pc.Everything went great but when I try to START android it says ''Error 15:file not found.'' I tried to install XP and save my PC but it said 0x0000007F.I tried to install Win 7 too but it couldn't find any driver. It is so lame. Please help me !

Thanks in advanceRepair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru 1st and printing out a REFERENCE copy...But it boots into android automatically. I cannot do anything. Is there anyway to reset fully a hard drive ? A button, or something like it? Please help me :-/

By the way thanks for your reply patio :-)If it boots to Android then you didn't read the info...the 1st step is SETTING the PC to boot to CD which is when the XP screen comes up.
Give it another go...There are four possible reasons a system won't boot to a cd:

1) The optical drive isn't the first device in the bios boot order or

2) The cd is not bootable, is bad, or is not an original RETAIL OS cd or

3) The optical drive is bad or

4) The mobo battery is dead and is not saving the bios option when you reset the boot orderHey ! You all did not understand,or I just could not handle it (sorry for my bad english :/ ) cd boots and installation prepares itself. Then pc restarts and it errors with a blue screen and error code is 0x0000007F

Solve : Why is my new Alienware laptop slower than my old Dell !!??

Answer»

I play slot tournaments at an online casino. I wanted more spins in the 3 minutes allowed as I see other players getting more spins than me, so I forked out £800 for an Alienware laptop as my inspiron 1721 only has a windows experience score of 3 - the Alienware has 5.9.

You get about 40 spins in THREE minutes but it varies because of 'bonus rounds'. On normal spins I get about 40 spins on the Dell and only 39 on the Alienware which surely should not be so. But the biggest difference is on the bonus rounds - it takes about 45 seconds to play the bonus round on the Alienware , but only 37 seconds on the Dell. As soon as the round starts the Dell loads the window in about one second and starts playing it , but the Alienware takes about 8 seconds to load it. ( I can only imagine it is something to do with cookies holding the info about the bonus round ?)

I upgraded my virgin 20mb to 60mb and got the superhub - I have tried the Alienware on wireless and have it hardwired at the moment- speedtest shows it is getting 60mb speed. The Dell is on wireless , and as I have not UPDATED the wireless card is still showing 20mb on the speedtest -- but it is still faster ! The Dell has vista and firefox as the browser, the alienware has chrome and windows 7 -- but I do not know if the browser has any impact (would like to know) - because although the casino was downloaded through the browser it now has its own icon which I click on , so I am not opening it thru the browser

Anyone got any suggestions? It's hard to say exactly what the difference in speed is down to, especially without knowing the exact specifications, or at least make and model, of the two PCs involved.
When you OPEN the casino game, is it a separate application, or does it then open in the browser?
Do you have a link to show us exactly which site this is from? The casino is --- http://www.jackpotcity.co.uk/ - you download it onto your computer , then it has its own icon so you do not go into a browser to open it - so it is a separate application.

The older but faster laptop is a dell inspiron 1721 - amd athlon 64 x2 dual-core 1.79gz ----- ram is 1 gb - 32-bit operating system

the alienware m15x is an intel core i7 cpu --- q720 @ 1.6 ghz - with 8 gb of ram and a 64 bit operating system

Now i do have a program CALLED Format Factory but when i convert movies to the mp4 format, video stops and gos and when stopped, the audio is still speaking. anyone know a good program for free that will do this conversion to mp4 and free and easy to use.You already tired newer version of FF. Right?
If the file is very damaged, thee is not a WHOLE lot you can do.
Have you already seen this?
Video Converters -CNET

Can you play the file in any popular media player as is?
Some may have a option to repair the file. A few frames may be lost.

For video converting, I usually use Any Video Converter, which so far hasn't let me down with anything, and it's free.
http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

It supports most any format (except converting into Apple's MOV format) and it fairly easy to use. Drag and drop the files you WANT to convert, set the output format (has presets which you can customize if needed) and click the convert button. Files are outputted to My Documents -> Any Video Converter and into a folder named with the extension you chose.Try VirtualDub. This program is a bit complicated for beginners, but has very rich features. You can go and download Clone2Go Free Video Converter to help you. It can be used to convert video files to avi, mpg, FLV, etc.

Besides, it features an easy-to-use YouTube downloader, which lets you download VIDEOS from YouTube as mp4, flv or 3gp files in a snap.http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.htmlQuote from: goblue8000 on April 07, 2012, 07:37:20 AM

Mys ISP, AT&T, says to use high security. What is gong non?
So, you're using an AT&T email ACCOUNT and you have it setup in Thunderbird. Is that right? Can you tell EXACTLY what settings "AWG" is referring to when you see that message? Yes, and I have settings recommended to me by AT&T.

How do you play a .mod Movie Clip file?

I tried to play it in the Windows MEDIA Player and it threw an error.
Try VLC Player...Free.Well, the mystery is solved.

After trying several things, out of frusturation, I decided to post the files on my web site.

I brought up a browser to test the URL path to the files.

.MOD files, it SEEMS, are not always video clip files. They can sometimes be text files and "MOD" is short for "modification instructions" for plug ins for some CMS open source systems.

The .MOD file appeared in my browser as a text file.

I had spent a LOT of HOURS trying all sorts of different video players and conversion software. "DOH"!!

Solve : Windows End Of Support?

Answer»

I'm a little confused with the end of support for;

Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP2

Windows lifecycle fact sheet states that Mainstream Support for XP SP3 ends Apr 14,2009
and Extended Support Apr 8,2014

Mainstream Support for Vista SP2 Apr 10,2012 and Extended Support Apr 11,2017
The lifecycle fact sheet states that Extended Support is only available to commercial customers (as below)

I know that I have received updates for XP SP3 after Apr 14,2009 and for Vista after Apr 10, 2012 .
What do you suppose they mean by commercial customer, or am I missing something with this? overthehill

_______________________________________ _______________________________________ ____________

Mainstream support—Microsoft will offer mainstream support for a minimum of 5 years from the date of a product's general availability, or for 2 years after the successor product is released, whichever is longer. For example, if you buy a new version of Windows and five years later another version is released, you will still have two years of support left for the previous version.

Extended support—Microsoft will offer extended support for either a minimum of 5 years from the date of a product's general availability, or for 2 years after the second successor product (two versions later) is released, whichever is longer. Please note: Extended support is only available for commercial customers.

That means you give them some money.
Windows XP will continue to be useful to most users.
Even small business owners will hang on and not pay any money.

So if I understand you properly, the average user should receive updates for XP SP3

I don't recall hearing the "for commercial customers" qualifier stated anywhere before this discussion. So, I'm skeptical about that being accurate. Here's a reference on end of support which does not mention "for commercial customers": http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/end-support

Thks, patio.
I didn't mean to drag this on and on. But, thought this to be a fair and legitimate question.
I was simply wondering if anyone else had noticed and (or) attempted to possibly make sense of Microsoft's statements to the references that I previously provided regarding "End of Support". And no, I'm not to worried (at the moment anyway) about either of these OS's (XP SP3 (2014??) or Vista SP2 (2017?) taking a "dump" because of "End of Support". Thks. again, patio. Their facts are actually posted on a Microsoft site.
But, perhaps you're right. Maybe they're just trying to fool the public?. overthehillActually, for most consumers, whether MS supports their Operating System is only of tangential relevance; for most people, support for their machine would come from the manufacturer.

Of course windows updates and other such things will eventually stop, but by the time they do, that OS should have fallen into such disuse that it's no longer a target. For example, take Windows 3.1. It's unsecure, but not insecure, because you aren't going to find anything on the net that can infect it anymore. (On the flipside, you aren't likely to find any sites that work properly with IE 5.5, which is the latest version 3.1 can run).

What exactly does it mean when they "drop support"? For the majority, it means they will longer receive software updates from Windows Update. The other changes are only relevant as a direct consumer of Microsoft. The vast majority of people are not direct consumers of Microsoft, instead they got their copy of Windows with their PC. OEM installations of Windows are supported by the OEM, not by MS, because most OEMs fill their installations with so much crap it's no longer recognizable to it's creator, like frankenstein's monster wearing a wig.

The repurcussions are more long TERM. New devices released after a versions of windows is no longer supported are far less likely to have drivers and other software written for that OS.

With that phrase, What they mean when they say that it's only available to commercial customers is that direct technical support from Microsoft is only available to commercial customers. That is, consumers will still get updates, and so forth, but you can't call MS for support without a rather hefty charge. This doesn't affect most people anyway because most people are running a copy of windows provided by an OEM for which support is their responsibility. Companies of course have their own IT departments which would normally work with MS and their other software and hardware vendors to solve problems; that is who this affects, since they no longer get No-charge incident support.

Calling MS for Windows XP activation will still be free, but that is part of their "get genuine" program.Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 07, 2012, 09:01:23 PM

Solve : Customising Office Colour Palate?

Answer»

So this probably belongs on support.microsoft.com, but that is ALWAYS more HASSLE than help.

I'm working with a client who has ten standard colors for everything - PPT decks, SUBHEADS on documents, ETC. And every time I launch a new file, I have to click on 'color' - 'More Colors' - then add in the R/G/B code for each.

Is there a WAY to semi-permanently change that?

(Templates don't seem to be the answer).

Thanks

Solve : Editing Home Made Film DVD's?

Answer»

Hello there Guy's! I am making my own collection of favourite movies to DVD. (I used to do this to VHS) As with VHS, all the TV adds are copied as well. Does ANYONE know of a program that will edit my DVD's so that I can make them complete and then burn them back again please? You would need three pieces of software. A DVD 'ripper' which would convert the video from being on the DVD to a single video file on your computer. You can then open that file in a video editor of your choice where you would edit it. From there you would then USE a DVD authoring program to write the video back to a DVD you can play in your DVD player.

There should be plenty FREE programs that can do what is described above.Try dvdshrink to rip the dvd - you can author it straught to dvd (vob) format from there and burn it or save the files to disc.

If you need to convert files to/from VARIOUS formats - particularly to open and edit them in dvd editing software, try any video converter free - its also handy for converting movies to watch on phones, tablets, apple devices etc
Actually I just googled anvsoft (any video converter website) and apparently the latest version will burn a dvd for you as well.

The version I have is supposed to have the functionality to set start and end times, however to be honest in my version that never works, and I did update to the latest version on a work pc - and from memory the interface was a bit clunky so I ended up sticking with my older version.... So what I am saying is I have found this to be great for converting files from various formats - and it supposedly will also let you edit - trim bits out and then burn to dvd, but that functionally didnt work as well as its conversion did in my experience...

I also didi a quick google and found these (no idea how good they are as I havent used - but are free)

http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-author/#Title3 (dvd authoring - says supports vob)

http://www.freemovieconverter.net/ This one rips a dvd to a movie file - which will give you a file on your pc that you can then edit in otehr software - I am wondering if I haveused a earlier version of this a couple of years ago - if it is the one I used - it was good, basic, but did a reliable job)

also http://www.sothinkmedia.com/movie-dvd-maker/

And there are a couple of free versions of their dvd maker and burner apps on this site

Solve : Simple (?) DOS rename question?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to rename a group of files in a directory with a simple DOS command in a .bat file. They all start with the same character and a space. I want to remove the character and the space but using ren or rename is making me crazy...

An example of the file name would be: 2 WKRN 6PM MF-2012-05-08-0.txt (all of my file names begin with "2 WKRN") and I want to remove the "2 " (numeral and space) so it becomes "WKRN 6PM MF-2012-05-08-0.txt". It seems like I should be able to:

rename "2 wkrn*.txt" "wkrn*.txt" but this is giving me "wkrnRN 6PM MF-2012-05-08-0.txt", which seems TOTALLY odd...

Any help would greatly appreciated. I feel like an idiot! Thanks! At the prompt:

CODE: [Select]for /f "tokens=1* delims= " %A in ('dir /b "2 WKRN*.txt"') do Ren "%A %B" "%B"
In a batch script you need to DOUBLE the percent signs:

Code: [Select]for /f "tokens=1* delims= " %%A in ('dir /b "2 WKRN*.txt"') do Ren "%%A %%B" "%%B"
(copied and pasted from a command window) a demo run from the prompt, with a DIR before and after...

Thinks for the spelling.

WinPatrol? What is that? I hope it's not the MS Police.

It's a piece of software that IMO is a poor substitute for tools like Autoruns, provides only a fraction of the functionality and has "consumer friendly" dialog which means it refers to 'secret' registry entries and has a Dog mascot "Scotty the dog found these startup programs". My issue with this is that the product is for adults, so the mascot IMO is sort of demeaning when you put it in a product for them. The author writes blog posts on the subject of consumer security and somehow manages to discuss his WinPatrol product. His MVP Profile Biography is practically a Winpatrol advertisement.

I'd find it to be interesting and even useful, but it's features such as detecting registry changes are implemented through polling, as far as I can tell, which is a bit of a blunt way of doing it.Thanks BC.
Some 'free' programs do more harm than good.
Autoruns for Windows is recommended by Microsoft.

Solve : Question about Driver Sweeper and Nvidia Drivers?

Do I just click uninstall Graphics card under device MANGER and boot into safe mode to get rid of any of the ones you may suggest here? DO NOT use any 3rd party driver apps. Drivers should only be updated if there is a specific need or reason to do so.

I have to update the driver because I am installing a new Graphics card and it's a different driver from the one I have, but I have been told I must make sure the other driver is uninstalled before installing the new driver. The new driver has many more features for the Geforce 680, it has things like adaptive Vsync and GPU boost and FXAA, but I'm not sure what parts of the old drivers I have to uninstall.

@Patio - I have got the new driver from Nvida site because it's the most upto date driver.Uninstall info: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13955.html

Be sure to download your driver from the nvidia website yourself - no need for a 3rd party appWill the new driver give me the option to uninstall and reinstall Nvidia PhysX? Thanks!!I don't know. Is that a standalone addition to the driver?

Solve : Looking For Alternative To Mouse But Windows Mouse Keys Not Working Properly?

Answer»

Due to some RSI issues, I'm trying to use the Mouse Keys feature of Windows 8 ( A feature that lets you move and click the mouse with keyboard keys). I cannot click certain screen elements like I can with a mouse. Examples would be the dropdown menus in Explorer, under View\Navigation Pane, which is the button on the extreme left of the Explorer menu (Windows 8 ) where you click the down-pointing arrow to select such things as "Expand to open folder". Another example would be the fields found in most applications that you TICK with a check mark. I cannot tick the box with a keyboard key - only a physical mouse will work, which defeats the whole purpose.

Although the needed drop down menu isn't appearing, I do get a LITTLE "blink" on the screen that lets me know my keyboard input has been noticed, so to speak, by the computer. I would appreciate any ideas on this. I don't have to use Mouse Keys, and have looked into alternative programs that remap your keyboard keys to mouse buttons, but have found some of the same problems with those utilities as well. I've never used Mouse Keys but I'm curious about why you want to use it. Do you have a mouse? You should be able to use your keyboard for almost any situation.
Use TAB to move between fields. SHIFT TAB goes backwards.
If you have a radio button situation, the up and down arrows will highlight the different selections. Use SPACE to check checkboxes.
If you have to move from task to task, hold ALT and tap TAB until the correct task is lit, then release the ALT
to move between TABS in a dialogue box, hold CTRL and tap TAB as above.
I am also not familiar with win8 mouse keys, but often use my keyboard to navigate my computer.
other keys of note:
CTRL X Cut C Copy V Paste
CTRL O open
CTRL P print
CTRL I italic, B bold, U Underline
WIN R run box
WIN F Search box
WIN E ExplorerScottastic, I believe he's asking about a special feature called Mouse Keys. As far as I know, it is a feature of Windows XP but not later versions of Windows.

The keyboard techniques you've described are common keyboard shortcuts that do not require any special feature of the OS.

Thanks for the shortcuts, Scottastic. It's convenient in some applications to use Tab to get around in a dialog box, but there are other situations that really require the use of some kind of mouse. I don't much use an actual mouse; I use various alternative input devices that perform the same function as a mouse. I have some issues with repetitive stress injury in my wrists that make it painful to click, so I try to avoid that when possible. There are various ergonomic devices I can use to move the cursor around the screen, but most of them require you to click a button.

For whatever reason, it doesn't damage my wrist to type, like it does to click. So, I'm looking for a two-part solution where the left hand MOVES the cursor around with a device such as the ergonomic Contour Roller Mouse, and the right hand clicks the cursor, using keyboard keys remapped to mouse buttons. Or, Windows' Mouse Keys.

I may just simply not know how to PROPERLY use Mouse Keys. Seems like they're working better than they were; I probably need to get more familiar with the utility. I'd be interested in hearing about it, though, if any one else is doing anything similar with their mouse. Thanks for the input!

Solve : Auto reply to email based on condition?

Answer»

Hello,
I receive a few dozen emails a day which contain an ATTACHMENT. Upon receiving it I send an "OK" reply if it contains correct attachment type and save that attachment to a folder. I am looking for a way to automate this process. Have looked at thunderbird and some addons like filtaquilla but they don't do what I want. Google isn't of much help either.

Is there any kind of software to do this? I'm USING Windows XP and Gmail account. Any advice appreciated.
Not sure how an app or addon would be able to determine if an attachment is of the correct type...or not so my guess would be No.Sorry, I MEANT the attachment's FILE extension. This can be easily done by scanning the body of email, I am just looking for a way to do that.Quote from: fhunt on August 10, 2013, 07:02:00 AM

It can? How? The attachment is not in the body of the email.Sorry, I meant the ACTUAL whole body of the email, not just the text part.
For example if in thunderbird you select an email and press ctrl+u it opens the body (source) of the email. If there are attachments, there are lines like this
Code: [Select]Content-Type: application/x-gzip; name="*censored*.xml.gz"
I just need to scan that.

Solve : Google Desktop & Toolbar for IE?

Answer» Hi again, I'm still hoping for a reply to my question in "Other" forum; meanwhile, a few things IN RE Google.

I was wondering do I need the programs Google Desktop and Google Tool for Internet Explorer? If so, how are they helping. OR are they a drain and I can REMOVE them.

I went into ADD/REMOVE looking for GWA Program. While I didn't see it. I did see those two. I use the AOL Desktop with IE 8 on my cable modem CONNECTION.

Thank you much...
I use IE8, and don't use Google toolbar or desktop. Did you try going to Tools/Internet Options/Settings(under search)?
That should show you your ADD ONS, and some of them can be removed. I've found that some of the more mallicious add ons that get installed will have their "disable" button greyed out, and not functional.I am so jealous of ppl with tech skills. Me, I can't even post a screen shot. I wanted to post the settings page I clicked onto, I hit the key for a screen shot but I guess this site doesn't allow for them automatically.

However, if it does please direct me to the tag. Thanks

Let's review that sentence; I believe some punctuation is missing. Do you mean, "The buttons on the image, e.g. the hang up button on skype, also squish with the image but to click the button you have to click where it usually would be. Anyone know how i can fix this??"

Can you post a screen shot of a photo or Skype?

Also, some info on your computer may be helpful. What are your hardware (including video card) specs? Windows Photo Viewer.

Sorry about the punctuation, unless i am really concentrating on it i am terrible at it.

I do have an external monitor connected but this problem has been happening since before i connected it to the monitor.
Even so, I suggest you disconnect the external monitor and run your computer that way for awhile and see whether it returns to correct display. Your system, with the GeForce Go 6100, is somewhat low powered on the video side to run an external monitor, especially if you're trying to run that monitor at a much higher resolution than the resolution for the laptop display. Yeah my laptop came with Windows Vista.

Ok ive disconnected the monitor, now i guess i just have to wait.

HP Printer was working fine this morning with XP. As of tonight, I got message to add a printer. Went to Printers and Faxes, and neither printer nor scanner was shown. Tried to add them and got message "print SPOOLER service is not running." Tried everything I could find online to fix this, with no success. Could this be related to a message I have SEEN at startup for months now (it didn't seem to affect anything, so I didn't explore it further), saying "c:\documentsandsettings\allusers\applicationdata\gctopc.dll could not be found" ?? Any suggestions you can offer would be most welcome. Thanks. You may have lost the drivers for your HP printer. Hard to say how that could happen.
Use your HP CD to install the printer again. That should fix the problem.
BTW: Do you run virus scans? A malware may have DESTROYED your print drivers. This has been reported elsewhere and sometimes HP printers are the target. Thanks for the advice. I'll try it. Can I re-load the CD even if I can't get past the "add a printer" command (because that's where the "printer SPOOLING service not running" pops up)? I run Trend Micro and Malwarebytes scans daily; the Malwarebytes did find a Trojan two days ago, which may be to BLAME, even though it was removed.Install from the CD.

Solve : Software for images, videos and music collages??

Answer»

A friend of mine has a daughter graduating from COLLEGE in the NEXT week and they had asked me what a good piece of software for putting together a mixed collage of music, pictures and video might be? She was looking to have a DVD with photos of the GRADUATION fading in and out during the time music played. I thought about ConvertXToDVD immediately before she mentioned photos and music. I believe the best layout once the DVD goes into the player would be to have the videos play first and then the fading in and out of photos along with the music she wanted. If anyone has an idea for a program please let me know I would be very thankful.OK, Here is my recommendation.
Focus on getting a very good and fast DVD burner, perhaps an external unit. A very bad experience is when you find many of your friends and family fan not read the DVD on a HOME machine. And not because of format. But due to variations in the QUALITY of DVD burners.
Also, the best DVD burners are often packaged with excellent software for move and sound editing.

Solve : photo editor that works??

Answer»

Does anybody know of a free photo editor that will simply outline a part of the picture save it and delete the rest? If Paint does this I haven't found it. As in MS Paint you USE the square or circle tool to draw a circle and then fill with the color you want. So if you fill with white then you've esentially deleted that part. I just want to take a section of the picture and delete the rest so I can print it out for job ESTIMATE purposes. I've wasted more time fooling around with this. Sometimes it sort of works but not at all like they say. Some better editor have special filters that can do that.
Did you tray all on this list?
Best free photo editing software.
In Windows 7 & Windows 8, Paint has a Crop button and makes cropping easy. Are you using Windows XP or what?I'm using 9 but thanks and I'll look at it again
There is no "9" so we still don't know what VERSION of Windows you have. If I go up to help and select about Internet Explorer it says Explorer 9 But I did find a easy to use crop too in Windows Photo Gallery. You just select the picture you want then select fix then on the right select crop picture. Now I just have to see if I can get pics from my phone Galaxys3 there. I was trying to print one of those pics and it said only printable with a Samsung printer.Nobody has asked you what browser you have. The fact that you're using IE 9 is irrelevant. We still don't know what version of Windows you have, and that is relevant for the reason I previously mentioned. Home premium vista 64 bitI no longer have Win Vista and I can't recall the features of Paint in Vista. An image of Paint (Win 7/8), which shows the Crop button, is below:

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Grazzi! Like i said i found it in win photo galleryI would go towards GIMP for this. It's a free photo editing software that is close to photoshop. It's a more complicated than MS paint but it will give you better outcomes and more features if you know how to use it. A day of watching video TUTORIALS on youtube will pretty much give you the basic knowledge to use this software.I agree that GIMP is a pretty powerful free photo editing software. However, gord99 simply needs an easy way to crop photos, so I think GIMP is more than he needs.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]You can borrow a friends copy of Windows 7 and perform a clean INSTALLATION using your key that ia AFFIXED to the laptop as a clean install. That is your only other way to put Windows 7 back on this computer without using the recovery set that came with the laptop.

Corporate installations are generally just that, installations from Windows 7 disc using the activation key that is affixed to the laptop so that you have just a clean laptop with bare OS and none of the bundleware that comes with a new home computer / bundled to recovery set.Just curious but why would you not want to use the Toshiba Recovery tool ? ?

Solve : Offline email synchronising?

Answer»

A rather complicated issue...I don't even know if a solution is possible!

I have internet connection at a central location. At a number of other remote locations, I have PCs without internet connectivity. I am looking at a solution by which one or many users at the remote locations can have their email accounts synchronised through the computer at the central location. The data is moved between the central location and the remote locations on a flash memory device or an optical disk.

Could there be a software solution to this issue that has a server-client MODEL? It would be better if the emails could be synchronised in the background under a password protection without the operator at the server end being able to read them.

I am open to windows or Linux solutions. So, you're wanting to get email distributed to computers not connected to the Internet. Seems like an absurd notion to me. If you really need email at those "remove computers", why aren't they connected to the Internet?

Have you considered some other solution such as an email app on smart phones? Or, sending email to cell phone text messages using a service such as http://americas.clickatell.com/solutions/global-sms-gateway/?gclid=CI-29a2RvrgCFaI7MgodCisAfw#.UeqK5kD8iIU ?I agree that it sounds absurd, especially in today's wired world!! But there are places on the planet that still are away from wired and wireless communication, and I am in one of those places.

Putting things into better perspective, the central location that I have mentioned has a satellite internet connection. The remote locations that are several km apart can neither be connected to the internet not to the computer at the central location through any medium.

I am looking for a solution where the persons at the remote locations can have the email addressed to their email ids DELIVERED to the computer at the central location. Several persons will obviously have several different mail addresses. Is it possible for the emails received at the central location to be sent to the remote locations on any removable media and read by the users there? And conversely, the users at the remote location compose their emails, and send them to the central location on removable media, to be transferred through the internet.

Though a person at the central location can open each remote USER's mailbox and save the email on a medium that can be sent to the remote location, it is INTRUSIVE and lacks privacy.

In effect, it calls for a system where I can have a number of mailboxes configured in the central computer, which get synced with corresponding mail boxes on the remote computers through a flash drive or CD.

I can understand that the requirements are strange, and very unconventional! I frankly cannot think of an easy, workable solution - that's the reason I have put it on the forum for the geekier guys to figure something out!Mozilla Thunderbird®, Portable Edition comes to mind as a possible solution; more info @ http://portableapps.com/support/thunderbird_portable. This is an email client that runs on a flash drive. Perhaps you should also assess whether POP or IMAP email would WORK best for your situation. To use IMAP, your ISP will have to support it, so you would need to confirm that before setting up IMAP in your email client. By the way, Google's gmail can be set to work in IMAP mode.

Solve : Copy All from one PC to another PC.?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

We have a standalone computer at work that runs some specialist programs that create data. The operating system is an old version of XP Pro.

The person who knew all about it has left the company and I have been thrown in at the deep end after a couple of weeks of training. Whilst quite comfortable with using computers my knowledge of the system side is very poor.

Can I backup the whole computer and install it on my PC at home?

I have an old Dell that runs XP pro and I know (monkey fashion) how to clean sweep the hard drive and reinstall everything, which I do every year to keep it running at an acceptable speed.

I’ve been trying for days and days to install one of the programs from a work CD onto my computer but have been getting continual installation errors, 1935’s and 1937’s. I’ve uninstalled .net framework and reinstalled every version several times not really knowing what I’m doing. I did manage to get the work application installed once but I couldn’t run it because it wouldn’t initialize. Took me hours just to find out how to log on as Administator.

So it would be very nice if I could COPY the whole thing onto my PC.

Thank you for any help.

Can I backup the whole computer and install it on my PC at home?

Not really. You could take a system image, but there's no guarantee it would be bootable, not to mention the POTENTIAL licensing issues. Is the software bespoke, and therefore there's no chance of anyone else knowing about it, or is it used outside of your company even in a limited fashion? If it's not unique, let us know what it is, and PERHAPS someone may be able to assist.Hi Calum.

It’s mainly CADCAM stuff. I finally managed to install AutoCad from the CD onto my PC at home but it won’t run. I get a “failed to initialize 0xc0000005” error when I try to run it. My PC barely fits the minimum requirements.

I’ll probably just leave it now, though it would have been nice to have it at home where I could do some work away from the stress of a manufacturing environment.

Thank you for your help.
Thee my be yet some suggestions from forum members.
Can you provide so detail about what you need to do?
AutoCad is a very serious professional program. which would suggest your company would invest in some means to keep the integrity of the system intact.

Does your company have high-speed internet? Do you? If so, .you could run the program from your remote location without need to duplicate then software.

There are a number of firms that have software and hardware to accomplish
Remote Computer Access tasks.

Some decline this approach, they believe programs like AutoCad will not work as a remote application. Not so! In fact, you can even run applications in different OS and still have ENOUGH speed to get the job done. The devil is in the details.

Here is an example of the pro and con for AutoCad on remote.
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=211804
From the above, you see people have strong opinions on this. But some get it to work very well. The devil is in the details

Key words: remote computer access with AutoCad

Otherwise, duplication of the software on a home computer has some licensing issues that your company may not wish to face up to.

I support AutoCAD amongst other software at work, so may be able to help. What version of AutoCAD are you trying to get to run?
There are a few possible solutions for an 0xc05 error here. It's an access violation error, so can be caused by something in your temporary files, a software conflict of some kind, or even a hardware fault such as bad RAM. it could also be that the software isn't licensed, if you're trying to run it on a standalone PC without a license.Hi Geek-9pm.

Thank you for your interesting reply.

Sorry it took me so long to reply but at the moment I’m just trying to cope with all the new stuff I’ve had to learn which includes not only using AutoCad and creating cadcam code but also running the machinery.

Remote access sounds appealing and when I get a chance I will try and copy the software from this standalone PC in the tool-making dept onto one of the PC’s in the office, which are on-line.

To be honest I didn’t even THINK of the licencing issues.

Hi Calum.

Thank you for your reply.

It’s AutoCad 2005. I think my first step is to purchase a new PC or laptop. My old Dell is now 12-years old and only just meets the minimum requirements to run this type of software.

I work at a small company and the only person who knew anything about the software is the person who used it who has now departed the company following a dispute. Essential programs are AutoCad and BobCad-Cam. Don’t even know if they are licenced copies. Fortunately I’m starting to get the hang of it so the desire to have a copy at home is not so pressing, though it would be very useful.

Kind regards

Michael
I have a quite a few architect clients i build and maintain PC's for so your question set off a bell...i remember awhile back one of them using an older ver. of Autocad corresponded to them because they had no need to upgrade at the time.
They sent him 2 liscences for the older ver. at no charge...worth a try i say.
This was approx. 5 years ago.

Solve : Microsoft Word Question (Opening old document closes new empty document)?

Answer»

This is just one of those odd quirks I have run into. When I open a new document in Word, then open an older file, the new document closes and only the old one is displayed.

Using Microsoft Office 2010, specifically Word.
Windows 7 64-bit

A bit of explanation, I often do research/writing for school or for fun. This issue has always happened, just one of those small annoyances.

Here is the exact thing that is happening:

1. I open a new (blank) word document, by clicking on the Word icon or by selecting "Open New Document" in the Word program.
2. I open an older (saved) Word document, by clicking on the saved file, not by using the "Open" function in Word.
3. The New (empty) document disappears, only the older document is open. I must now open a new empty document to write in.

What I want to happen:

1. Open new document
2. Open old document
3. Both new and old document are open (2 windows).

Other notes in no particular order:

- Word has always operated like this. Just wondering if there is a way to stop it.

- I am not using the "Open" function in Word to open the older file, I am opening the older file by double-clicking it in the File explorer. When I use the "Open" function in Word, it does the same (basically "closing" the new file in order to open the old one).

- I TRIED searching through Word's settings but couldn't find anything that seemed to relate to this behavior.

- As per regular Word behavior, the new document is auto-named "Document1". After the new file is closed (from opening the old one), and I must re-open a new document, it is called "Document2".

- Basically, as far as I can figure, opening an older word file while a blank document is open closes the blank document. I don't know why this is the case. I often do this, as I open a blank document to type then open reference documents to review or research before I get started. A simple, 2 second delay, but confusing nonetheless.

Apologies for any confusion, and thank you for any assistance!Yes, you are right. That is normal for MS Word.
Do this:
Open a new document. Type something. Even a single space. Save it with a name you want.

Now open an older document.
Both documents can be on the screen or cascaded.

If memory is not an issue, you can haven two instances of Word.
Okay, thanks for the quick reply! ^w^

I will certainly TRY to REMEMBER to save the new document before opening any others. That reply does make sense. As the new document has no information in it, Word probably assumes it was opened in error and then closes it automatically to save resources as no data is lost. Or something like that The new document has to have some information.
A single char will do. Like the dot at the end of this sentence.

Solve : DUPLICATE EMAILS AFTER REINSTALL?

Answer»

Hello everyone--please bear with me as I TRY to explain my problem.

Operating System: Microsoft VISTA-Home Premium (I HATE IT!! GIVE ME BACK MY XP!)
Computer: Gateway (laptop)
Email client: Incredimail

OK--so I was having a lot of issues with my computer which is only 4 months old. It started doing weird THINGS and I was getting strange error messages. So to resolve these issues, I had the computer reset to factory settings. That's when my other problems began!

I re-installed Incredimail and apparently they have a newer version with no option of downloading the old one. In the past, I've had to re-install or install on a different computer and all of my messages automatically were retrieved! Well, after some time, it looks like this one s doing the same howeve it is pulling them from somewhere over and over and over again! RIGHT now, I have over 20,000 messages in my inbox-with most of them being duplicates. It keeps doing this too! Why is it doing this and how do I stop it? Does it have anything to do with the settings from my webmail?? I'm not sure how it could and I have gone over those settings several times. But now that I say that, I have to say that it is not even pulling from the webmail. I can't seem to get those emails retrieved and sent to Incredimail and the emails that are in Incredimail are no longer in the webmail Inbox. Can someone please help? I can't seem to get any support from Incredimail. They have a good product but their support sucks! I've been using them for several years now.

I'm thinking about just not using it anymore though and using the Windows mail that comes with this crappy Vista. Is that easy to set up?

Thanks in advance to all who are able to provide any advice!

Older versions of Incredimail are available here if this is any use to you.Thank you so much! I will try that. OK--so after starting the install, i got a message that said it needed to upgrade so for whatever reason it won't download the old version. I think I'm giving up on that but can anyone tell me why it is still continually retrieiving the same emails over and over again??? I'm not kidding when I say I have over 20,000 in my box! I don't undertand where it's pulling them from at this point since the emails it is pulling are no longer in my webmail either! I've checked my settings over and over and can't find anything wrong--what am I missing??Operating System: Microsoft Vista-Home Premium (I LOVE IT!!)
Computer: Compaq (laptop)

I'd try setting up your email account in Windows Mail and SEE what happens. I'm having the same problems with duplicated e-mails. e.g. I get one duplicated at least 10 times.

Sounds like it's not fully compatible, it's probably running at the wrong multiplier or FSB speed. I doubt there's anything you can do because options to change settings like those are not usually available in Dell BIOSes.

Solve : 3 Different Printing Programs not Opening Until Reboot?

Answer»

The issue is I have a few programs that refuse to work at random times until you reboot the computer once or twice. These programs are all graphic design programs for engraving or specialized printing(wire labels, terminal block labels). The programs are VisionPro7, Weidmuller M-Print Pro, and Brady Labelmark 5. All manufactures of these programs say they are compatible with this computer.

The computer is a dell desktop running 64-bit windows 7.Is you 64 bit Windows 7 up to date?
Please provide the name of the printer.
Does the printer always work with other programs?
Do you get error messages? If so, please post. All updates have been installed from Dell and Windows. There are 3 model printers one for each of those programs. The VisionPro uses a Pheonix 1212 engraver. The Weidmuller MPrint uses a Weidmuller PrintJet Pro . The Brady uses a Brady BP-PR300.

These printers are only USED within those programs, and at times will function fine. But EVERY couple days when we boot up they will not open. A reboot or two will usually resolve it, but my boss is on me to fix this because it is wasting time.

There are not any error messages that show up on the screen, but there are a couple of ERRORS that show up in the log. They do not seem to correspond with trying to open one of these programs, but the show up in the event log a few times per day.

Application errors:

this computer.

Just in case it isn't obvious, I replaced the actual domain name and the 2 different IP addresses with the tags in <>.Thanks for the details. Maybe somebody else can understand it.
Some other questions.
All of these printers are on the same computer?
If so, is USB the interface used? USB has its own issues.
Or, is there some networking used to get these printers online?
If the Domain server fails to connect, would that cur off a printer?
Or, does each printer connect via an Ethernet cable to a router?

A common problem with Windows is failure to log into a network in a timely manner. Sorry, I don't know the remedy for this. The standard procedure is to reboot. You MAY have already mentioned that to your boss.

The Weidmuller and Brady are USB and the Pheonix 1212 is ethernet. It has its own separate program to connect to the engraver and copy the drawings to the controller.

http://www.iobit.com/ascultimatefbshare.php
Funny you should mention this, I've recently started preparing to actually perform a "experiment" I waxed about several years ago in relation to these sorts of tools. Advanced SYSTEMCARE 6 Free is one of the products I intent to experiment with to see exactly what they do and exactly what they do do.

At a fundamental level, I have a very strong opinion on "tune up" suites like this, and it is extremely negative. I've always felt that the Suites are often "all hat and no cattle" that is they work very hard to impress those with reasonable PC competence into thinking they are doing something, but it would take a dedicated individual to prove that they aren't doing anything useful. The amount of "whizbang" and skinning and lack of accurate technical information on the product has always caused me to consider them something of Snake Oil. I hope to prove, with evidence and scientific, REPRODUCIBLE experiments using the software, that much of this software does not have any noticable positive effect and that due to various technical considerations, they can actually have negative consequences.

Anecdotal- My Aunt swore by System Mechanic 6 quite a number of years ago. Her Computer had more Memory, and it had a faster CPU than my own. And yet, my computer was noticably faster, despite her use of System Mechanic. She bought into it hook-line and sinker. She didn't recognize that the reason it was slower than mine was becauseshe was using that tool, and instead decided that it meant she had to run the "optimizer" more.

I'm looking forward to my tests on some of the products I chose for my experiment. I'm curious to see how products like Advanced SystemCare analyze a clean OS install.
Iobit seem to have a fairly good reputation if you like Tune-up programs, (I don't) - this is a bundle of tools - antivirus, realtime malware scanning, and in "expert mode", a number of tools to do things like file shredding, duplicate file finder, undelete, startup manager, Task Manager replacement, etc. PCMag said "With Advanced SystemCare Ultimate 6 you get antivirus protection that's good, but not great. It's definitely better at fending off attacks than at scraping out malware that has already invaded. I wouldn't rely on it to clean up an infested system. On the other hand, if you can get it installed on a clean machine it will do a decent job of keeping you safe. In addition, you get an absolutely amazing assortment of utilities to clean up, tune up, and optimize your PC. For some, that will be reason enough to choose this product."

It doesn't really do anything that you can't do with free stuff, and some of the Toolbox items duplicate things already in Windows, but for many people I guess it's easier to pay for an all-in-one solution. but 50 dollars? Really?

Iobit has stolen pretty much any propietary software they have EVER packaged as their own...i'd personally avoid it.
With that being stated most "all-in-one" packages are pure Carp.I personally used it. Whether it's good or bad is something that is dependent on the user. If you are fairly new to using computers or not so technical with it then probably this could help you. This cleans your computer, helps with your settings and do other things that you could manually do. It makes setting up and cleaning your PC AUTOMATIC. However as I have said you can do all of these things manually so the software isn't really that necessary IMO.It's garbage...causes more issues than it portends to fix.I would never touch it, or anything else from iobit. The software they sell looks flashy but is just the usual garbage that promises to solve everything, makes up "science" as to how it works and then sells it at a ridiculous price. I'll never understand things like "Registry boosters" - It's not like the registry is searched linearly where STRAY keys make a big difference. Sure they could make a small difference, but this would be so tiny you could probably measure the number of extra CPU cycles!

What really freaks me out is the fact this includes Antivirus. I doubt it's any use for that at all compared to the big players (I wonder if they still steal Malwarebyte's database like they were caught doing) so people will either end up running two antivirus programs at the same time OR running only iobit which I doubt could protect anything properly!

As BC said, the only evidence I've heard for these tools is purely anecdotal and I imagine the placebo effect really comes into play here.

Interestingly, almost all machines I see with these tools installed are insanely slow. This either points to the fact that these tools simply do not work, or they actually cause the machine to run worse. I personally believe the former in this case.

I highly doubt that link is actually free, I imagine it'll be scareware and will yell "Your computer has all these viruses, registry errors, disk errors, buy this software" "We have calculated this will speed up your PC by 104.26%" then get you to buy it.

I can't wait to see BC's experiment! I planned on trying this sort of thing (But originally with driver scanners due to a discussion with someone who was convinced they worked wonders...) on my backup laptop, It's sitting out and everything but still not got around to actually doing it!

I've never run any of these tools, I mean, I never even bother to clear out temp files or clear cache yet all my Windows machines are almost as fast as they were when they were set up! I struggle to see sometimes how people can mess up their machines so badly, well, probably installing loads of these tools they were told to by ads would be a start! Thanks for all comments on this. Also looking forward to BC's experiment results.

I personally don't use any of these system tools that claim to be a 1 tool to cover all. The last tool used was years ago... Norton System Works 2003 and it made the system worse than better with its alterations to the registry which were suppose to optimize. The good thing is that I had GoBack version 3 installed so I could revert back to a restore point prior to the bad changes and be running clean again without error messages etc.

Now days if I want to optimize, I manually perform removal of unnecessary services etc, but with computers as powerful as they are today there is no need to make them any more efficient than a clean build is.

Will suggest to my friend to avoid using this software for now.Well I did experiment with ASC Free on a clean XP Virtual Machine.

I wasn't very impressed

Sadly as I note the free version doesn't have a Registry Cleaner, which is probably for the best because I'd be writing unfavourable text on it for the next few hours.
Thanks BC for testing that out and showing how bad it is... Had a good laugh at your findings in how unprofessional their software is to determine that a clean build is only "Fair" when "0" issues detected vs Excellent and to later find out on the next screen that its FAIR vs EXCELLENT because a few features were not installed of theirs. A good thorough shared observation blog that hopefully others out there will find as enlightening as it was to when I read it and laughed at the screen shots with comments.

Its too bad the registry tool was not available on the free edition. It would have been interesting to see how bad or misleading that was.

* My friend found this software on a Facebook Ad that was either on their wall or an advertisement to the side when I asked where she found it. With the many who use Facebook, there are probably many people who have installed this software. Hopefully they will google it first and find your test blog results to know to avoid it vs just blindly installing it since some think that "it came from Facebook ads, and facebook would never advertise anything bad... so it should be ok...RIGHT" Quote from: DaveLembke on July 27, 2013, 03:42:07 PM

By installing the software the user has already self-identified as unsophisticated and gulliible, and like a 419 scammer, the software provider tries to milk it a bit more... no harm in trying, from their point of view.

Pretty much. Anybody who would install it hasn't done the research anyway. I'd be wary just based on their history of stealing from other companies. It's like the deliberate mis-spellings in phishing emails; if you notice them you're not in their target demographic. They aren't all there to bypass spam filters.

HOW WE CAN USE ETHICAL HACKING?Not with all caps. Is this Spam?
Ethical Hacking would be to use an unusual method to help people avoid danger.

Quote

The MAJORITY of people in the security industry use the term interchangeably with the term "white hat" - a COMPUTER hacker that performs all kinds of penetration testing against an organization's information systems, at the behest of that same organization and so that it can secure those systems against black HATS (straight up "bad guys" hacking for money) and grey hats.

What is called a "cyber sting operation" can be used by law enforcement to gete criminals trying to defraud people with the use of computers.
However, the term "Hacker" is now most often used in a negative way. So you find headlines that read "Computer Experts Help Police Get Hackers."
Ethical Hacking is very popular in the Open Source community where the source code is wide open for change and vulnerabilities are detected by ethical hacking if not plainly obvious in the source code to be pointed out, and shared in an ethical "white hat" hacker way to make the software or operating systems more secure and better.

The black hats are the ones who use vulnerabilities for personal gain in illegal activities. Then you have those who play both sides of the fence, the grey hats.DaveLembke, what color is your hat?
HEY...LOL its White. I use to serve up honeypots to watch them get hacked etc and see what methods hackers used and tools. If you put something out on the DMZ with lots of vulnerabilities it doesnt TAKE long for a hacker to bite at the bait. I'd have them hit the systems and then take them offline and see what goodies they left behind. Keyloggers, redirectors, etc. It was fun until I started getting DoS attackers that would affect my telephone which is Vonage and needs bandwidth, and the DoS was choking up my bandwidth. After checking them out, I'd reimage them with Ghost image and put them back out to catch another person. The best honeypots are the ones that look to the hacker as if they just got into something interesting such as you populate it with all sorts of false info that looks important and business or financial related that is all bogus.

*I did have a repeat hacker though who left a message on my desktop with notepad open of the one honeypot once though which was rather cool. He or she actually stated in "NICE HONEYPOT", and the give away to my honeypot was that the IP was registered to Comcast and the IP was not of the Comcast Static IP issued range, and he had seen this same system and messed with it prior. But he didnt sign the message with his hacker identity, it was just a note left for me which was rather cool.

Hi, I recently got this old dell 2400 Running Windows Xp Home SP3 with Intel Celeron Cpu 2.40 Ghz, that I upgraded from 512 mb ram to 2gigs ram. once I did that I installed all your basic, plus Mozilla first , then chrome and upgraded explorer. I only added chrome cause flash kept crashing across the board. WELL it's happening more frequently, and to make matters worse, netflix, and VlC is crashing as well. I want to include some registry values maybe it's something in my settings or registry any help would be awesome.

Download a protection software or antivirus. I would suggest MSE http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201
Then run a free malware scanner to remove any infections http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
Use also an adware, PUP and unwanted toolbars remover http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/
See if the problem persist after running these scanners.
