Solve : Something has changed...? |
Answer» When I went to update my adobe flash player, everything went sour, and the more I TRY to fix it, the worse it gets. I'm not finding any viruses or malware, using HIJACK This, Online Armor. MBAM, SAS, CC cleaner. Hijack this says:"For some reason, your system denied access to the Hosts file. If any Hijacked domains are in this file, Hijackthis may not be able to fix this." I don't remember touching anything to any Hosts file. Internet explorer is taking 5 minutes to load a page. Running Windows 7.Do you USE an anti virus app? Have you RUN a full system scan with it? |

Solve : best way to backup my laptop hard drive?? |
Answer» Due to recent health issues I've sold all my computers except my HP 6715b laptop with 320 GB HD and I also have a 320 GB SATA desktop HD mounted in a USB external enclosure. I also have a 250 GB laptop hard drive that will work in this laptop (if needed). So if this machine quits, what's my best bet for keeping my files for use on whatever machine I can get/afford if this one fails? If I were you, I would do a complete image backup with your favourite image program (I like Macrium Reflect for this) so that if the HDD in the laptop fails, you can restore from that and get back to exactly where you were. If the laptop gives up, you can still access the image backup as a partition from any PC with Reflect installed, and copy any files across from that - so it serves a dual purpose, as an image backup and an accessible backup of every file on the drive. I would then back up my files individually, I use a service called Crashplan to back up online but their software is free and can be used to back up files to another PC or another drive as well as to their cloud service. There are many other programs around that can back up your files automatically, I've used and liked Cobian backup and a Microsoft tool called SyncToy as well. I try to keep at least 3 copies of my files nowadays - one on my machine, one online via Crashplan, and one on an external drive which I have Crashplan's software handle for me too. I'm probably going to write up a small review of CRashplan in the next few days actually, I've been using it for around 6-8 months now and it's a great service, a little pricy normally but I got it on an amazing deal at the time so it's worth looking out for it. Other online backup services are available, some are free with reduced storage space or features - Microsoft Skydrive, Dropbox, Google Drive to name a few. I do feel it's worthwhile backing up online if it's feasible as it's pretty much the ultimate off-site backup. On another note, I'm sorry to hear of your health issues, wishing you all the best. As for the laptop itself, my gf has the similar but Intel based 6710b, and we have a FAIR few 6715b's at work. I haven't seen many issues with overheating so I would suggest doing the usual routine of cleaning out dust from the heatsink and fan, if you can gain access to the heatsink itself then remove it and reseat it with fresh thermal paste as the factory stuff is probably past its best by now. That should help temperatures. My gf's 6710b copes fine with distributed computing for long periods of time. Thanks guys! I suspect your right Geek about heat buildup being a problem for laptops. This laptop and also the two I just sold both have CPU cooling air intakes mounted on the bottom of the machine with the exhaust mounted on the side. My thought is - why would they not channel the cooling air intake and exhaust ducting both on the sides in order to provide adequate air flow when the machine is in your lap - in your lap means the clothing you have can severely limits the air flow to the air intake. I know it's actually named 'notebook pc' but many usages for some people are in their lap. I'm no computer designer but before last YEAR I worked in the industrial production machinery trade for many years and designed many systems, and I learned quickly that inefficient cooling for electrical controls, motors, hydraulics, gearboxes ect. would mean costly premature failures. But even today notebook pc's are still being produced with CPU cooling air intakes on the bottom of the machine. I must be missing something. Thank you Calum! Macrium Reflect worked fine and I now have my files backed up on my USB external hard drive and on Dropbox too. Can't beat the price!!! Last year, when I was running FAH (SMP2) @ 100% on both cores with CPU overheating issues, I removed the heat sink and cleaned/ re-applied thermal paste. I still had CPU temp issues. I READ an artical somewhere back then about the 6715b having cooling design issues from the factory. So what I did was... 2 years ago I had to replace the keyboard in this machine and I still had the previous keyboard in my junk box, so I dug out that old keyboard and removed all the keys which created a metal plate with a bunch of holes. Then I bought some filter material and cut it to fit over the keyboard metal plate chassis panel. That solved my overheating issue and I ran this machine until recently fodling @ 100% with no overheating issues. I've run a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse on this machine since then - still do. Hopefully it will last , but just in case I appreciate your guidance on backup options!! Thaks again to both of you! Mike Quote but many usages for some people are in their lapNice on a cold day. But yes, cooling designs on laptops are mediocre. They get away with it because the laptop is so thin that there is less space to trap heat.Quote from: lectrocrew on June 24, 2013, 11:59:32 PM 2 years ago I had to replace the keyboard in this machine and I still had the previous keyboard in my junk box, so I dug out that old keyboard and removed all the keys which created a metal plate with a bunch of holes. As for the intake/exhaust vent design, I agree it's not ideal for when it's on your lap or a soft surface like a bed, I only ever use laptops on a hard surface so that airflow underneath is adequate and exhaust is not restricted. |

Solve : 7 zip? |
Answer» I have Windows 7, 64 bit and I downloaded and installed 7 zip. I cannot get it to unzip 7zip files. I hooked up my old COMPUTER with Windows XP and it works fine. What did I do wrong? Thank youDid you download the 64bit version? Also did you download it from a trusted site? I cannot get it to unzip 7zip files. What have you tried, what happened, and what did you expect to happen?I always FACE this problem and the workaround I have found is: Even if you installed 7zip on windows 7, be it 64 bit or 32 bit. You have to LAUNCH the 7zip application by right clicking on it and select "Run as Administrator" Select Yes in the following window. When 7zip is LAUNCHED, go to Tools >> Options>> click "select all" and click apply and ok to close that window. Now it should work. |

Solve : Windows End Of Support? |
Answer» I'm a little confused with the end of support for; That means you give them some money. Thanks Geek for your reply. So if I understand you properly, the average user should receive updates for XP SP3 until 2014 and Vista SP2 until 2017 without paying. If this is correct I'm quite happy with that. Still leaves me confused though why they would state that these later dates are only for commercial customers. overthehillQuote from: overthehill on May 04, 2012, 08:32:09 AM Still leaves me confused though why they would state that these later dates are only forI don't recall hearing the "for commercial customers" qualifier stated anywhere before this discussion. So, I'm skeptical about that being accurate. Here's a reference on end of support which does not mention "for commercial customers": http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/end-support So, I believe all users of genuine editions of the OS continue to get the stated support. From the link that you provided there is other info. provided there under "More Resources". The info.namely (Learn more about Windows lifestyle) is where I got the "Commercial Support thing", thus my concern. overthehillQuote from: soybean on May 04, 2012, 08:51:42 AM I don't recall hearing the "for commercial customers" qualifier stated anywhere before this discussion. So, I'm skeptical about that being accurate. Here's a reference on end of support which does not mention "for commercial customers": http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/end-support So, I'm still wondering where does that leave us with the aforementioned OS's. I'm still looking for more. Do we have support until the "Commercial Customer" support date with these, or what is your/anyones guess? . The info. that was provided after all was issued by Microsoft. Where do you suppose we can go for definite confirmation, if not them? For the sake of myself and OTHERS it would be great to have an assuring ANSWER. Sure hate to wake up one morning to find that I have no OS. overthehill 2014 is the official end of support... However many many XP PC's will be running way after that... PERSONALLY i wouldn't worry about it...after all Win 98 support ended eons ago...and i still have 2 PC's running it flawlessly. PS...The OS does NOT just take a dump and stop running just because support has ended...Quote from: patio on May 07, 2012, 04:34:19 PM 2014 is the official end of support.. Thks, patio. I didn't mean to drag this on and on. But, thought this to be a fair and legitimate question. I was simply wondering if anyone else had noticed and (or) attempted to possibly make sense of Microsoft's statements to the references that I previously provided regarding "End of Support". And no, I'm not to worried (at the moment anyway) about either of these OS's (XP SP3 (2014??) or Vista SP2 (2017?) taking a "dump" because of "End of Support". Just thought that I might be misreading or possibly not understanding Microsoft's intent (their statements on "End of Support" regarding "Commercial Customers") and that perhaps someone (other that Microsoft) might enlighten me on this?. That's it, that's all. overthehillIt's quite possible they worded that press release to simply discourage home users from using it...all i know is it's in place TIL the stated date...Quote from: patio on May 07, 2012, 08:12:03 PM It's quite possible they worded that press release to simply discourage home users from using it...all i know is it's in place til the stated date... Thks. again, patio. Their facts are actually posted on a Microsoft site. But, perhaps you're right. Maybe they're just trying to fool the public?. overthehillActually, for most consumers, whether MS supports their Operating System is only of tangential relevance; for most people, support for their machine would come from the manufacturer. Of course windows updates and other such things will eventually stop, but by the time they do, that OS should have fallen into such disuse that it's no longer a target. For example, take Windows 3.1. It's unsecure, but not insecure, because you aren't going to find anything on the net that can infect it anymore. (On the flipside, you aren't likely to find any sites that work properly with IE 5.5, which is the latest version 3.1 can run). What exactly does it mean when they "drop support"? For the majority, it means they will longer receive software updates from Windows Update. The other changes are only relevant as a direct consumer of Microsoft. The vast majority of people are not direct consumers of Microsoft, instead they got their copy of Windows with their PC. OEM installations of Windows are supported by the OEM, not by MS, because most OEMs fill their installations with so much crap it's no longer recognizable to it's creator, like frankenstein's monster wearing a wig. The repurcussions are more long TERM. New devices released after a versions of windows is no longer supported are far less likely to have drivers and other software written for that OS. With that phrase, What they mean when they say that it's only available to commercial customers is that direct technical support from Microsoft is only available to commercial customers. That is, consumers will still get updates, and so forth, but you can't call MS for support without a rather hefty charge. This doesn't affect most people anyway because most people are running a copy of windows provided by an OEM for which support is their responsibility. Companies of course have their own IT departments which would normally work with MS and their other software and hardware vendors to solve problems; that is who this affects, since they no longer get No-charge incident support. Calling MS for Windows XP activation will still be free, but that is part of their "get genuine" program.Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 07, 2012, 09:01:23 PM Actually, for most consumers, whether MS supports their Operating System is only of tangential relevance; for most people, support for their machine would come from the manufacturer. Thanks, BC. Not to say that I doubted patio, but I really appreciate the in depth explanation. Since coming across this "commercial customer" thing, it's been kinda bugging me. Now I'll be able to sleep Once again, thks. overthehill |

Solve : Editing Home Made Film DVD's? |
Answer» Hello there Guy's! I am making my own collection of favourite movies to DVD. (I used to do this to VHS) As with VHS, all the TV adds are copied as well. Does ANYONE know of a program that will edit my DVD's so that I can make them complete and then burn them back again please? You would need three pieces of software. A DVD 'ripper' which would convert the video from being on the DVD to a single video file on your computer. You can then open that file in a video editor of your choice where you would edit it. From there you would then USE a DVD authoring program to write the video back to a DVD you can play in your DVD player. |

Solve : what software do I need for a reconditioned laptop? |
Answer» I am CONSIDERING purchasing a reconditioned laptop, only because I have a voucher from a class action suit that gives me enough to buy it. what software would I need to PURCHASE to do things like internet, word processing,...just the basics to start? I was thinking I'd need Windows, Office and a security/anti-virus program. I do not plan to install myself. just not that good. thanks for any guidance. Thinks for the spelling. It's a piece of software that IMO is a poor substitute for tools like Autoruns, provides only a fraction of the functionality and has "consumer friendly" dialog which means it refers to 'secret' registry entries and has a Dog mascot "Scotty the dog found these startup programs". My issue with this is that the product is for adults, so the mascot IMO is sort of demeaning when you put it in a product for them. The author writes blog posts on the subject of consumer security and somehow manages to discuss his WinPatrol product. His MVP Profile Biography is practically a Winpatrol advertisement. I'd find it to be interesting and even useful, but it's features such as detecting registry changes are implemented through polling, as far as I can tell, which is a bit of a blunt way of doing it.Thanks BC. Some 'free' programs do more harm than good. Autoruns for Windows is recommended by Microsoft. Quote This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup MONITOR, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them. ...Autoruns for Windows v11.70 Think I will try it. |

Solve : Question about Driver Sweeper and Nvidia Drivers? |

Answer» I am using the program Driver Sweeper and wanted to know what I should DELETE before I install my new Geforce 680GTX. There are 3 Nvida option to TICK and delete from my computer, but I'm not sure if I should delete them all. The option are Nvidia-Chipset, Nvidia-Display, Nvidia PhysX and I am UPGRADING From a Geforce 570GTX to a Geforce 680GTX. Can you also explain how I go about using Driver sweeper please? Do I just click uninstall Graphics card under device MANGER and boot into safe mode to get rid of any of the ones you may suggest here? Thankyou!!Why not just use the GeForce Driver CD to install instead of some "driver" 3rd party app of which most are junk ? ?+1 +1 I have to update the driver because I am installing a new Graphics card and it's a different driver from the one I have, but I have been told I must make sure the other driver is uninstalled before installing the new driver. The new driver has many more features for the Geforce 680, it has things like adaptive Vsync and GPU boost and FXAA, but I'm not sure what parts of the old drivers I have to uninstall. @Patio - I have got the new driver from Nvida site because it's the most upto date driver.Uninstall info: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13955.html Be sure to download your driver from the nvidia website yourself - no need for a 3rd party appWill the new driver give me the option to uninstall and reinstall Nvidia PhysX? Thanks!!I don't know. Is that a standalone addition to the driver? |

Solve : Looking For Alternative To Mouse But Windows Mouse Keys Not Working Properly? |
Answer» Due to some RSI issues, I'm trying to use the Mouse Keys feature of Windows 8 ( A feature that lets you move and click the mouse with keyboard keys). I cannot click certain screen elements like I can with a mouse. Examples would be the dropdown menus in Explorer, under View\Navigation Pane, which is the button on the extreme left of the Explorer menu (Windows 8 ) where you click the down-pointing arrow to select such things as "Expand to open folder". Another example would be the fields found in most applications that you TICK with a check mark. I cannot tick the box with a keyboard key - only a physical mouse will work, which defeats the whole purpose. |

Solve : Google Desktop & Toolbar for IE? |
Answer» Hi again, I'm still hoping for a reply to my question in "Other" forum; meanwhile, a few things IN RE Google. I was wondering do I need the programs Google Desktop and Google Tool for Internet Explorer? If so, how are they helping. OR are they a drain and I can REMOVE them. I went into ADD/REMOVE looking for GWA Program. While I didn't see it. I did see those two. I use the AOL Desktop with IE 8 on my cable modem CONNECTION. Thank you much... I use IE8, and don't use Google toolbar or desktop. Did you try going to Tools/Internet Options/Settings(under search)? That should show you your ADD ONS, and some of them can be removed. I've found that some of the more mallicious add ons that get installed will have their "disable" button greyed out, and not functional.I am so jealous of ppl with tech skills. Me, I can't even post a screen shot. I wanted to post the settings page I clicked onto, I hit the key for a screen shot but I guess this site doesn't allow for them automatically. The buttons on the image eg the hang up button on skype also squish with the image but to click the button you have to click where it usually would be. anyone know how i can fix this??Let's review that sentence; I believe some punctuation is missing. Do you mean, "The buttons on the image, e.g. the hang up button on skype, also squish with the image but to click the button you have to click where it usually would be. Im not QUITE sure what you want but ill do my best: Its a compaq, im not sure if this is what the video card is but NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100, 2Gb of RAM, AMD Ahlon 64 x2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 1.70 GHz [year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Also in the picture my cursor is supposedly over the 'Pop-Out' button but as you can see the cursor is way to the right. What OS are you running? Is your computer a laptop? If you open Device Manager, do you see any yellow triangles with an exclamation MARK inside, especially with regard to "Display ADAPTERS"? If this is a laptop, do yo have an external monitor connected to it? Can you post a screen shot of a picture viewed in Windows Photo Viewer? Re: Skype. I don't use it much. So, I'm not sure what you're trying to show us there. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Yes it is a laptop. Nope, no yellow triangles or any warning signs. I do have an external monitor connected but this problem has been happening since before i connected it to the monitor. Ok here it is: [year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Did you consider some of the Skype users have black and white Cams ? ? The desert photo is a black and white photo...This happens with any video feed, whether from skype, you tube or in games etc. The picture is in full color, I've opened it before the problem and it has been in perfect quality with vibrant colors.Quote from: CoragousPrey on May 09, 2012, 09:50:03 AM Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Quote from: CoragousPrey on May 09, 2012, 09:50:03 AM I do have an external monitor connected but this problem has been happening since before i connected it to the monitor.Even so, I suggest you disconnect the external monitor and run your computer that way for awhile and see whether it returns to correct display. Your system, with the GeForce Go 6100, is somewhat low powered on the video side to run an external monitor, especially if you're trying to run that monitor at a much higher resolution than the resolution for the laptop display. Yeah my laptop came with Windows Vista. Ok ive disconnected the monitor, now i guess i just have to wait. |

Tried to add them and got message "print SPOOLER service is not running." Tried everything I could find online to fix this, with no success. Could this be related to a message I have SEEN at startup for months now (it didn't seem to affect anything, so I didn't explore it further), saying "c:\documentsandsettings\allusers\applicationdata\gctopc.dll could not be found" ?? Any suggestions you can offer would be most welcome. Thanks. You may have lost the drivers for your HP printer. Hard to say how that could happen. |

Solve : Software for images, videos and music collages?? |
Answer» A friend of mine has a daughter graduating from COLLEGE in the NEXT week and they had asked me what a good piece of software for putting together a mixed collage of music, pictures and video might be? She was looking to have a DVD with photos of the GRADUATION fading in and out during the time music played. I thought about ConvertXToDVD immediately before she mentioned photos and music. I believe the best layout once the DVD goes into the player would be to have the videos play first and then the fading in and out of photos along with the music she wanted. If anyone has an idea for a program please let me know I would be very thankful.OK, Here is my recommendation. |

Solve : photo editor that works?? |
Answer» Does anybody know of a free photo editor that will simply outline a part of the picture save it and delete the rest? If Paint does this I haven't found it. As in MS Paint you USE the square or circle tool to draw a circle and then fill with the color you want. So if you fill with white then you've esentially deleted that part. I just want to take a section of the picture and delete the rest so I can print it out for job ESTIMATE purposes. I've wasted more time fooling around with this. Sometimes it sort of works but not at all like they say. Some better editor have special filters that can do that. |

Solve : Copy All from one PC to another PC.? |
Answer» Hi everyone. Can I backup the whole computer and install it on my PC at home? Not really. You could take a system image, but there's no guarantee it would be bootable, not to mention the POTENTIAL licensing issues. Is the software bespoke, and therefore there's no chance of anyone else knowing about it, or is it used outside of your company even in a limited fashion? If it's not unique, let us know what it is, and PERHAPS someone may be able to assist.Hi Calum. It’s mainly CADCAM stuff. I finally managed to install AutoCad from the CD onto my PC at home but it won’t run. I get a “failed to initialize 0xc0000005” error when I try to run it. My PC barely fits the minimum requirements. I’ll probably just leave it now, though it would have been nice to have it at home where I could do some work away from the stress of a manufacturing environment. Thank you for your help. Thee my be yet some suggestions from forum members. Can you provide so detail about what you need to do? AutoCad is a very serious professional program. which would suggest your company would invest in some means to keep the integrity of the system intact. Does your company have high-speed internet? Do you? If so, .you could run the program from your remote location without need to duplicate then software. There are a number of firms that have software and hardware to accomplish Remote Computer Access tasks. Some decline this approach, they believe programs like AutoCad will not work as a remote application. Not so! In fact, you can even run applications in different OS and still have ENOUGH speed to get the job done. The devil is in the details. Here is an example of the pro and con for AutoCad on remote. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=211804 From the above, you see people have strong opinions on this. But some get it to work very well. The devil is in the details Key words: remote computer access with AutoCad Otherwise, duplication of the software on a home computer has some licensing issues that your company may not wish to face up to. Quote from: mike84 on July 09, 2013, 12:33:02 PM Hi Calum. I support AutoCAD amongst other software at work, so may be able to help. What version of AutoCAD are you trying to get to run? There are a few possible solutions for an 0xc05 error here. It's an access violation error, so can be caused by something in your temporary files, a software conflict of some kind, or even a hardware fault such as bad RAM. it could also be that the software isn't licensed, if you're trying to run it on a standalone PC without a license.Hi Geek-9pm. Thank you for your interesting reply. Sorry it took me so long to reply but at the moment I’m just trying to cope with all the new stuff I’ve had to learn which includes not only using AutoCad and creating cadcam code but also running the machinery. Remote access sounds appealing and when I get a chance I will try and copy the software from this standalone PC in the tool-making dept onto one of the PC’s in the office, which are on-line. To be honest I didn’t even THINK of the licencing issues. Hi Calum. Thank you for your reply. It’s AutoCad 2005. I think my first step is to purchase a new PC or laptop. My old Dell is now 12-years old and only just meets the minimum requirements to run this type of software. I work at a small company and the only person who knew anything about the software is the person who used it who has now departed the company following a dispute. Essential programs are AutoCad and BobCad-Cam. Don’t even know if they are licenced copies. Fortunately I’m starting to get the hang of it so the desire to have a copy at home is not so pressing, though it would be very useful. Kind regards Michael I have a quite a few architect clients i build and maintain PC's for so your question set off a bell...i remember awhile back one of them using an older ver. of Autocad corresponded to them because they had no need to upgrade at the time. They sent him 2 liscences for the older ver. at no charge...worth a try i say. This was approx. 5 years ago. Best of Luck. |

Solve : DUPLICATE EMAILS AFTER REINSTALL? |

Answer» Hello everyone--please bear with me as I TRY to explain my problem. I re-installed Incredimail and apparently they have a newer version with no option of downloading the old one. Older versions of Incredimail are available here if this is any use to you.Thank you so much! I will try that. OK--so after starting the install, i got a message that said it needed to upgrade so for whatever reason it won't download the old version. I think I'm giving up on that but can anyone tell me why it is still continually retrieiving the same emails over and over again??? I'm not kidding when I say I have over 20,000 in my box! I don't undertand where it's pulling them from at this point since the emails it is pulling are no longer in my webmail either! I've checked my settings over and over and can't find anything wrong--what am I missing??Operating System: Microsoft Vista-Home Premium (I LOVE IT!!) Computer: Compaq (laptop) Email client: Windows Mail I'd try setting up your email account in Windows Mail and SEE what happens. I'm having the same problems with duplicated e-mails. e.g. I get one duplicated at least 10 times. |

Im only receiving 1.6Ghz on it, I don't know why Im getting that Little of a Ghz I understand that its a mobile socket but I should be getting like at least 3.00Ghz, Can I make the speed faster. Sounds like it's not fully compatible, it's probably running at the wrong multiplier or FSB speed. Solve : Advanced System Care Ultimate 6 FREE .... Is this Good or Bad?? |
Answer» Friend of mine asked if this software was good and clean or bad once on a system. Anyone used this before to comment or heard any reviews on it? Seems innocent at the website, but figured I'd post here to get feedback on this. Friend of mine asked if this software was good and clean or bad once on a system. Anyone used this before to comment or heard any reviews on it? Seems innocent at the website, but figured I'd post here to get feedback on this.Funny you should mention this, I've recently started preparing to actually perform a "experiment" I waxed about several years ago in relation to these sorts of tools. Advanced SYSTEMCARE 6 Free is one of the products I intent to experiment with to see exactly what they do and exactly what they do do. At a fundamental level, I have a very strong opinion on "tune up" suites like this, and it is extremely negative. I've always felt that the Suites are often "all hat and no cattle" that is they work very hard to impress those with reasonable PC competence into thinking they are doing something, but it would take a dedicated individual to prove that they aren't doing anything useful. The amount of "whizbang" and skinning and lack of accurate technical information on the product has always caused me to consider them something of Snake Oil. I hope to prove, with evidence and scientific, REPRODUCIBLE experiments using the software, that much of this software does not have any noticable positive effect and that due to various technical considerations, they can actually have negative consequences. Anecdotal- My Aunt swore by System Mechanic 6 quite a number of years ago. Her Computer had more Memory, and it had a faster CPU than my own. And yet, my computer was noticably faster, despite her use of System Mechanic. She bought into it hook-line and sinker. She didn't recognize that the reason it was slower than mine was becauseshe was using that tool, and instead decided that it meant she had to run the "optimizer" more. I'm looking forward to my tests on some of the products I chose for my experiment. I'm curious to see how products like Advanced SystemCare analyze a clean OS install. Iobit seem to have a fairly good reputation if you like Tune-up programs, (I don't) - this is a bundle of tools - antivirus, realtime malware scanning, and in "expert mode", a number of tools to do things like file shredding, duplicate file finder, undelete, startup manager, Task Manager replacement, etc. PCMag said "With Advanced SystemCare Ultimate 6 you get antivirus protection that's good, but not great. It's definitely better at fending off attacks than at scraping out malware that has already invaded. I wouldn't rely on it to clean up an infested system. On the other hand, if you can get it installed on a clean machine it will do a decent job of keeping you safe. In addition, you get an absolutely amazing assortment of utilities to clean up, tune up, and optimize your PC. For some, that will be reason enough to choose this product." It doesn't really do anything that you can't do with free stuff, and some of the Toolbox items duplicate things already in Windows, but for many people I guess it's easier to pay for an all-in-one solution. but 50 dollars? Really? Review here http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2419684,00.asp Iobit has stolen pretty much any propietary software they have EVER packaged as their own...i'd personally avoid it. With that being stated most "all-in-one" packages are pure Carp.I personally used it. Whether it's good or bad is something that is dependent on the user. If you are fairly new to using computers or not so technical with it then probably this could help you. This cleans your computer, helps with your settings and do other things that you could manually do. It makes setting up and cleaning your PC AUTOMATIC. However as I have said you can do all of these things manually so the software isn't really that necessary IMO.It's garbage...causes more issues than it portends to fix.I would never touch it, or anything else from iobit. The software they sell looks flashy but is just the usual garbage that promises to solve everything, makes up "science" as to how it works and then sells it at a ridiculous price. I'll never understand things like "Registry boosters" - It's not like the registry is searched linearly where STRAY keys make a big difference. Sure they could make a small difference, but this would be so tiny you could probably measure the number of extra CPU cycles! What really freaks me out is the fact this includes Antivirus. I doubt it's any use for that at all compared to the big players (I wonder if they still steal Malwarebyte's database like they were caught doing) so people will either end up running two antivirus programs at the same time OR running only iobit which I doubt could protect anything properly! As BC said, the only evidence I've heard for these tools is purely anecdotal and I imagine the placebo effect really comes into play here. Interestingly, almost all machines I see with these tools installed are insanely slow. This either points to the fact that these tools simply do not work, or they actually cause the machine to run worse. I personally believe the former in this case. I highly doubt that link is actually free, I imagine it'll be scareware and will yell "Your computer has all these viruses, registry errors, disk errors, buy this software" "We have calculated this will speed up your PC by 104.26%" then get you to buy it. I can't wait to see BC's experiment! I planned on trying this sort of thing (But originally with driver scanners due to a discussion with someone who was convinced they worked wonders...) on my backup laptop, It's sitting out and everything but still not got around to actually doing it! I've never run any of these tools, I mean, I never even bother to clear out temp files or clear cache yet all my Windows machines are almost as fast as they were when they were set up! I struggle to see sometimes how people can mess up their machines so badly, well, probably installing loads of these tools they were told to by ads would be a start! Thanks for all comments on this. Also looking forward to BC's experiment results. I personally don't use any of these system tools that claim to be a 1 tool to cover all. The last tool used was years ago... Norton System Works 2003 and it made the system worse than better with its alterations to the registry which were suppose to optimize. The good thing is that I had GoBack version 3 installed so I could revert back to a restore point prior to the bad changes and be running clean again without error messages etc. Now days if I want to optimize, I manually perform removal of unnecessary services etc, but with computers as powerful as they are today there is no need to make them any more efficient than a clean build is. Will suggest to my friend to avoid using this software for now.Well I did experiment with ASC Free on a clean XP Virtual Machine. I wasn't very impressed Sadly as I note the free version doesn't have a Registry Cleaner, which is probably for the best because I'd be writing unfavourable text on it for the next few hours. Thanks BC for testing that out and showing how bad it is... Had a good laugh at your findings in how unprofessional their software is to determine that a clean build is only "Fair" when "0" issues detected vs Excellent and to later find out on the next screen that its FAIR vs EXCELLENT because a few features were not installed of theirs. A good thorough shared observation blog that hopefully others out there will find as enlightening as it was to when I read it and laughed at the screen shots with comments. Its too bad the registry tool was not available on the free edition. It would have been interesting to see how bad or misleading that was. * My friend found this software on a Facebook Ad that was either on their wall or an advertisement to the side when I asked where she found it. With the many who use Facebook, there are probably many people who have installed this software. Hopefully they will google it first and find your test blog results to know to avoid it vs just blindly installing it since some think that "it came from Facebook ads, and facebook would never advertise anything bad... so it should be ok...RIGHT" Quote from: DaveLembke on July 27, 2013, 03:42:07 PM Had a good laugh at your findings in how unprofessional their software is to determine that a clean build is only "Fair" when "0" issues detected By installing the software the user has already self-identified as unsophisticated and gulliible, and like a 419 scammer, the software provider tries to milk it a bit more... no harm in trying, from their point of view. Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 27, 2013, 04:59:14 PM By installing the software the user has already self-identified as unsophisticated and gulliible, and like a 419 scammer, the software provider tries to milk it a bit more... no harm in trying, from their point of view. Pretty much. Anybody who would install it hasn't done the research anyway. I'd be wary just based on their history of stealing from other companies. It's like the deliberate mis-spellings in phishing emails; if you notice them you're not in their target demographic. Solve : HACKING SOLUTIONS? |
Answer» HOW WE CAN USE ETHICAL HACKING?Not with all caps. Is this Spam? The MAJORITY of people in the security industry use the term interchangeably with the term "white hat" - a COMPUTER hacker that performs all kinds of penetration testing against an organization's information systems, at the behest of that same organization and so that it can secure those systems against black HATS (straight up "bad guys" hacking for money) and grey hats. What is called a "cyber sting operation" can be used by law enforcement to gete criminals trying to defraud people with the use of computers. However, the term "Hacker" is now most often used in a negative way. So you find headlines that read "Computer Experts Help Police Get Hackers." Ethical Hacking is very popular in the Open Source community where the source code is wide open for change and vulnerabilities are detected by ethical hacking if not plainly obvious in the source code to be pointed out, and shared in an ethical "white hat" hacker way to make the software or operating systems more secure and better. The black hats are the ones who use vulnerabilities for personal gain in illegal activities. Then you have those who play both sides of the fence, the grey hats.DaveLembke, what color is your hat? HEY...LOL its White. I use to serve up honeypots to watch them get hacked etc and see what methods hackers used and tools. If you put something out on the DMZ with lots of vulnerabilities it doesnt TAKE long for a hacker to bite at the bait. I'd have them hit the systems and then take them offline and see what goodies they left behind. Keyloggers, redirectors, etc. It was fun until I started getting DoS attackers that would affect my telephone which is Vonage and needs bandwidth, and the DoS was choking up my bandwidth. After checking them out, I'd reimage them with Ghost image and put them back out to catch another person. The best honeypots are the ones that look to the hacker as if they just got into something interesting such as you populate it with all sorts of false info that looks important and business or financial related that is all bogus. *I did have a repeat hacker though who left a message on my desktop with notepad open of the one honeypot once though which was rather cool. He or she actually stated in "NICE HONEYPOT", and the give away to my honeypot was that the IP was registered to Comcast and the IP was not of the Comcast Static IP issued range, and he had seen this same system and messed with it prior. But he didnt sign the message with his hacker identity, it was just a note left for me which was rather cool. |
