I recently had problems with my vista software and I was told a system restore would probably solve them. Something was wrong in my .net framework files that was causing windows applications to stop working. The only issue I have now is that NOBODY could explain the process of how to go about doing a system restore on that forum, and hopefully I can get some help here. I looked around on google but couldn't seem to figure out what I NEEDED to be doing. Can doing a system restore cause my computer to stop working if done incorrectly?

If not is there a way for me to completely remove my .netframework and then reinstall it? I tried using the add/remove programs and reinstalling but it continued to give me errors.Restore points only go back so far...BASED on the amount of space you have allocated for restore points.

If you can't go back any further...then that's pretty much as far as you can go.

I'm at university and had quite a bit of trouble connecting to the internet. I had to remove my old anti-virus, and replaced it with avg. Then I had to download all sorts of things to just be ABLE to use the internet. I THOUGHT I had that behind me, but I'm having trouble again. Before I got avg, I tried getting symantec because that is what the university uses and it was recommended. It worked for a while, but then every time I tried to open it, it would try to install something, but not be able to locate the correct file. I got rid of it and got AVG. Then I had that problem with msn - no problem, I just got the installer out of the trash bin and went through that again. Then I tried opening MS Word, and the same thing happened. As a university student, Word is probably the most important program. It's also bad because it's difficult to find places to download Word again. Anyone have any tips? I'm on an older Dell laptop running Windows XP Home. I have a COPY of AVG anti spy ware but the definiton files are outdated. I recently downloaded the most recent definitons. Do I move them like with adaware or is it differnt?If you downloaded them though the GUI than they INSTALLED themselves and you have nothing more to do....

However there is one problem that lingers: I have a number of old Microsoft WORK files that I need to convert to a format that OO.org can understand. There is a boatload of converters included with OO.org, but Work is not AMONG them.

There was also another error I had earlier dealing with my nVidia drivers regarding my nv4_disp.dll. Also, this doesn't always happen. Sometimes the game will just freeze up and I'll have to end-task it. I can still boot up my computer and if need be will post any error logs needed. All my drivers are to my knowledge up to date and the error has been happening ever since the build while experimenting with games of any kind. Any idea what's going on?

Try an ATI brand card and see if it BSODs.

If it does, then, like you said, it's not the video card.

If it doesn't, then there's some serious corruption with the nVidia drivers on the PC...

If i need to I can just reformat the drive or reinstall windows.

Yeah, you should do as QingHao said in the BIOS. If that doesn't work, perhaps you need to reinstall the Motherboard Drivers

I think the main thing we need to know here is what the error messages were.

Also, when did the problem start?basicly the error started once i got the computer the first time , wich was about 3-4 weeks ago, i also get theese small freeze laggs / spikes whenever , like when switching browse window etc , sometimes alot sometimes non at all , there on about 20 sec and then computer starts working as normal , im currently trying to install WoW once again to get the error message so i can post it.

This is what i get from wow , and sometimes in AOC , i get disconnected and have to "verify my game data" cause it may be corrupt , but atleast AOC still works after verifying.
EDIT : ive also tried installing and all that in Safe mode , but that doesnt work neither :/ and the dxdiag says there was an error while "recieving extra sound information" roughly translated , got norwegian vista .I found this:

The files ctaud2l.sys is not digital signed , wich means it has not been tested by microsoft whql, you might get a sertifikate driver fra the hard drive distributor.well , now ive done everything the PAGE said and i still get the same problem , atm i am trying a Prime95 self test , but i cant see how it can be the hardware as i just got it back from the distributor with the message that nothing was wrong with the PC .

i solve this problemok , so ive fixed the problem and for anyone who might STRUGGLE as i did here is what u can do , ( atleast with the wow install problems)

Ive tried everything there is until i did a Prime95 test , wich does a stress test off your computers RAM and motherboard etc , that was fine , so i deleted the files in Temp int files , did a defragmentation , and searched for all files on the computer with WOW or world of warcraft in it , deleted them , then i Downloaded the install client , (took along time) but well worth it , install went fine , and patching went fine , then i could just install the expansion as usual and now im downloading patches for the Expansion.

The problem was that vista sometimes has trouble reading big files such as "common.mpq/terrain.mpq/model.mpq etc etc , seeming they contain massive files , so the downloader installer has CUT up thoose files into smaller portions , wich worked perfect for me

About two weeks ago I downloaded the newest Yahoo Messenger 9 beta version. During the installation process, it froze and I had to close the program. Later, my computer slowed to a standstill and I OPENED the Task Manager and looked at the processes. Yahoo Messenger was on there and using between 97 and 100% of the CPU. I clicked End Process on Yahoo Messenger and the computer returned to NORMAL operation.
I then tried to uninstall Yahoo Messenger on the Add/Remove programs in the control panel. When I clicked on it, an error message appeared saying,"Could not open INSTALL.LOG file." So I then went into the Yahoo Messenger program file and could not FIND any folder that said uninstall or install. All I found was a folder that said "UNWISE," and when I clicked on it the exact same error message reappeared.
I WANT to uninstall this program desperately because every time I start my computer now I have to end that process. Please help.

I've been doing a lot of work in MS Paint (vista version) lately and everytime I re-open a pic after having closed it it comes out blurred. For example if I put a red square next to a blue square, then save and close it, when I REOPEN it the part where they meet has jumbled the COLORS. If you want an UPDATED version of Paint, you should try Paint.NET. It is an excellent free program with lots of updated features.

The only option I think could do it is the Draw Opaque option but I've messed around with it and can't figure out what it does. Either way, it didn't fix my problem.

I did look at paint.net before coming to this site. I might have to consider that as an options.

Did you look through the help contents of Paint?Make sure the picture is being saved as a Bitmap (.bmp).
If that doesn't solve the problem, try a .png.

How do I OPEN an xpi file? .xpi file? For Firefox?

If so, DOWNLOAD the .xpi to the Desktop.
Then launch Firefox and then go to Tools --> ADD Ons and DRAG the .xpi file into the add-ons window to install it.

I've been trying to reinstall windows vista on my laptop after a reformat, but at different PARTS of the insallation process it crashes.

I've had it crash while reading the installation CD, and when it was copying FILES off the drivers CD.

It just freezes and stops working every time at different stages.

In my opinion, it won't work.
When you install Vista on new hard drive, Vista installation will be tied up with your computer configuration, and it won't recognize shop computer configuration.
Your best bet is for shop guys, or even a friend to burn all updates to CD, or DVD, and you can install them yourself.

This is on one physical drive? You can try Gparted, depending on your skill level. The free partition tools tend to take a little BIT more skill to use, and keep in mind that partitioning a drive with data on it always carries some risk of damage. be sure to back up everything first. -Get a dual boot with Winows XP/Vista from the BIOS MENU. Then boot Winows Xp and follow the above instructions.

I am running Win Vista and I deleted my sound card (RealTek) in error and now my speakers do not work. I have gone into the device MANAGER and have no conflicts, I have also tried to install/update my drivers with no success. Hi all, i have a bum computer and i think that re-installing windows/Linux is the best option. I don't want to spend 100$ on a windows CD (the comp cost less) so i have decided to go with one of two options, but i don't know a whole lot about either. Anyways here are some questiosn i have for you computer guys.

The UBCD is a diagnostic set of tools and not an OS.Yea i don't have the Windows CD but i thought i might beable to fix the issues using the UBCD.

I used PC-Decrapifier-1.9.1 to remove files and programs i didnt need and it worked. I dont need it anymore how do i uninstall it? It dosent show up in uninstall programs list. Do i just DELETE it or is there a way to uninstall it? when i downloaded it i SAVED it to desktop. thanksDid it go thru an install SEQUENCE originally?

If not ( and you say it does not show in add/remove) and it is just a directly run .exe then it should be OK to just delete its folder and files. Hi: Can someone help me to format my footnotes so that they don't wrap to the next page. It seems that WORD 2003 TAKES the "available space on the page" and only includes the portion of a footnote that fits there - so that some footnotes end up getting spread out over multiple pages. I'd like all of my footnotes to appear, in their entirety, at the bottom of the page on which the footnote reference number occurs. Thanks very much in advance.

LingoQ How are you creating your footnotes? Are you starting with Insert on the menu bar, and then selecting Reference, Footnote, and then using the special footnote composition area to type your footnotes? Thanks so much for your response, Soybean. Yes, that's exactly how I created the footnotes.

I've developed a work-around, but it's not a solution I'm happy with. I went into the body text and inserted a manual page break a line or two from the bottom of the problem page. That effectively made more space so that the 2nd HALF of the footnote, which had been bumped to the next page, rejoined the beginning of the note. But I had to do that 8 times in a 40 page paper - not fun.

When I consult the Help file: Under "Footnote Troubleshooting," > "Part of the footnote GETS moved to the next page" there's this explanation:

Microsoft Word automatically moves the part of the footnote that does not fit in the available space to the next page. The amount of available space depends on the amount of text on the page, the margin settings for the document, and the number and length of the footnotes.

If you think of another fix, I'd love to hear about it. I'm a little flummoxed that Word would have such a bug. Or perhaps I'm missing something. Hmm, at the moment, I don't know of another fix. I did a test earlier today. I opened a 2 page Word (2003) file that had no footnotes in it. I inserted a footnote in a paragraph on the 1st page; I had two lines of text in the footnote. I then closed the footnote panel and displayed the page in Print Preview. The footnote appeared at the bottom of the first page, as desired. I then added more text to the footnote to increase the number of lines and again opened Print Preview. The entire footnote remained on the first page. To allow room for it, Word moved lines from the bottom of the body of the page down to the next page, which I believe is what you want, right?

I don't know WHETHER this matters but, when you add a footnote, you have the option of selecting "Bottom of page" or "Below text". Which are you selecting?

Could you try this? Copy some text (more than one page), with no footnote, to a blank document. Then, insert a footnote somewhere in the mid-section of the first page. Put enough text in the footnote to make it a multiple line note then display the page in Print Layout View or Print Preview and see how Word handles the footnote.

I used my non-micorosft uninstaller to remove avast antivirus. I am left with 74 DLL´s, that are write protected and my deletedr 2.1, first time has not been able to delete the 74 dll´s. My regedit, when open shows Awil, and all associated keys have no value. Reinistallation will not work. Tried many times and have given up.

Please, any one know how I can remove the one blue ball in my tray that STILL opens the scanner, that will not scan, as there are no values in the registry for Avast, in the registry of my system. Plus the dll´s, plus non-authorized AVAST screensavers, that keeps coming back even after removal.

I can right click on the blue ball in the tray and open the scanning screen. The scan will not work because only some of the dll´s were removed by my uninstaller.

AVAST, still tries to send updates and I am getting no support from them at all. Caused a serious conflict, attempts to download AVAST, fail when I attempt to reinstall, Tried installing other antivirus, and I am asked to remove AVAST. And I am unable to remove the 70 plus fragments left. (I once tested Nortons, and was able to remove all 375 registry keys left behind of removal of Nortons with regedit on a manual basis. Not with AVAST, they are write protected.

Please any one knows of any sofware that will delete a write protected file, with over 70 dll´s in the file. I need antivirus.

The post can be closed out, because I resolved the problem. In one of the many AVAST BALLS, included with the 70 plus dll´s, in the AVAST file, was a setting and I lucked out with the very first blue ball I opened there was a setting in the ball that allowed me to open configuration and disable AVAST SAFETY BACKGROUND SCANNER, before unlocker would work. (Although my own personal uninstaller had removed parts of AVAST that was corrupted when installed).

Went into a safe mode and performed the task with unlocker and a reboot that removed all the 70 plus dll´s in the one file.

Thanks again as my deletedr. 2.1 failed to do what UNLOCKER did.

NEVER have I seen any software with every dll ¨write protected¨.

My computer is now free 100% of AVAST.

RDgggYeah, I know what you mean. I COULD be wrong, but I think that even if you have 3.0, some programs will still need to use 2.0. So far, I haven't run into any programs that need 3.0 yet, so you could always uninstall that until you end up actually needing it. Of course, if it's not giving you any problems, then it won't hurt to leave it alone.This is correct...

The other day i uninstalled COD4 for my PC (windows vista), i tried REINSTALLING it, but when i PUT the CD in the drive, the game menu COMES up, and it says uninstall. But i already uninstalled it? and when i click uninstall, nothing happens? I have windows XP and service pack3 installed.

Yesterday while DELETING my emails in norton anti spam folder deleting stopped and the following MSG APPEARED-- Message interface has returned an unknown error if it persists restart outlook.

At the same time my incoming email stopped and I recd the following MSG -
unknown error 0x8004060c

As i could see my emails being downloaded I sent my son a test email - as of today he has had 200 copies of it!!But its still in my outbox

i have searched microsoft help page's and the error code says i need to DELETE some of my emails to reduce the size if inbox but as above i cant!!!

i do not know what to try next

What is the best email client that is free? I had enough with Outlook Express. One minute I get an error and next minute it's all good. What the *censored* is that all about? I need to switch email CLIENTS. The only 2 things I change in the email options are to set read receipts and leave the email on the server. Whatever email someone would RECOMMEND, how do I set it in the email client? I also would like an email client that is 100% free, no shareware or anything. Just freeware. I haven't used it lately but it is a separate install. They won't interfere with each other at all.

In an email account setup - you have the option to leave on server or not.

Just checked - in server settings - yep - checkbox to select this or not.

My pc has the Vista Premium O/s and i have the McAfee program. today this message keeps popping up saying that the firewall stopped working and that to update Hackerwatch and then when i clicked McAfee Inc. it brought me to the forum regarding firewalls and there is this message to delete this file called

c: \programdata\McAfee\HackerWatch\data\ and to delete this file "HwLocal.xdb" reboot and updates McAfee

I went to the C drive and McAfee program but could not find this file and did a search..nothing came up..

this message "to update Hackerwatch" keeps popping up.. any advice would be appreciated.Can you post the link to the forum regarding firewalls?

Got some more information about this. It seems to be an issue with Hackerwatch feature and the best thing to do is to uninstall and REINSTALL the software using the steps below:

• uninstall all McAfee programs through "add/Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel", incl. Security Center.
  
• Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR2.exe).
  This will remove all Mcafee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, Windows XP SP2 or W2K Pro SP4 to use this tool)
  
• Launch Windows Explorer and delete all McAfee files in "Program Files" but ESPECIALLY in "C:\Document and SETTINGS\<user>\APPLICATION Data". In Vista: "C:\Program Data\McAfee. You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the McAfee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one!
  
• Reboot and redownload/reinstall your McAfee products again.

I'm a little confused about this whole codec and decoder ISSUE. I just want to be able to watch DVD's on my Windows Media Player 11. But I have Vista Basic x64 and it supposedly does not come with an MPEG-2 decoder.

So I did some Google searching and was to Elecard Software. But I couldn't see an MPEG-2 decoder that works with Vista x64. Unless the one listed, that says it works on XP, ALSO works on Vista. I did find a free Cyberlink MPEG-2 decoder from Softpedia.com: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Stinkys-MPEG-Codec.shtml

The decoder did work and I was able to play my DVD but I had no sound. After that, I did a little research and found that I might need something called an AC3 Filter, which I understand is needed to play sound on certain DVD's and players. Would you CONCUR with that?

Also I have heard that I should stay away from those all-in-one codec packages, as they can cause more trouble than they're worth. I would rather do that too, if I can, I've seen the breakdown of codecs that get installed, and I just don't think that I need or want them all, gunking things up.

Any other help would be surely appreciated.

I have an HP Pavilion dv8130us. It came with Bluetooth and I turned it off a long time ago. I have since then done a lot of things to my computer such as replacing hard drives, OS and such.

ASlaterAs far as the blue tooth goes, can you see it in device manager? Does the computer have a physical switch for blue tooth? for the pics, you can usually send a text / pix message to an email address, even if you don't have email on the phone.1. There is no physical switch. (the wireless switch does the wilan and bluetooth I think)
2. This is not for a particular picture in my phone. I'm trying to get it working so I can use it in the future.
3. I tried the email thing but baybe not correctly. I selected a picture and sent to. I put in my email address and got something like "not a valid address" which can't be right because I use it every day.
4. Bluetooth is in the device manager, but only lists a DRIVER.

I kept playing with it and I got the Bluetooth working! In the HP Wireless Assistant, I looked at "properties" and selected separate controls for the Bluetooth and the wireless lan.
There it was! The turn bluetooth on button!
There was a set up wizard that had lots of stuff I don't understand, so I went with all the DEFAULT settings.
Now to try the camera phone again.

Also, you can RECORD the SOUNDS from the video while the video is running with Audacity.Also - AlShow (freebie) - gives an F8 option to capture audio.I use Accoustica. For the $25 I spent it does alot more than just record - it allows sectioning, overdubbing, volume and pitch adjustment. It' sgreat for MAKING samples to loop over just about anything. I shows recordings in a visual -liniar timeline sort of format so I can "see" the soundtrack.
but as I'm writing I'm realizing that you SAID "rip" audio - which means you may wish to quickly capture the sound file from something. This records in realtime, from input, CD, wave...

can anybody help, I have a small business accounting software which is great but I cannot seem to restore my files onto it. I have managed to restore my husbands accounts but when I go to restore mine it is asking me if I want to over write my accounts with my husbands. This all started when my old laptop broke and I had my files transferred to my new laptop. I can see my files but I cannot get into them I know that I need to TRANSFER them into the software but I have spent hours trying to do this but unsuccessful. I have even uninstalled the software and reinstalled it to see if I can restore my accounts FIRST, but it asks the same question. I wouldnt mind but strictly speaking i only want to print them off for my accountant, I won;t need to go into them again. (told you i was slow when it comes to computer jargon) - the software is Dosh cashbook used for small businesses. The company is now part of MYOB, as I have the old version. I have been in TOUCH with them and they have been very helpful, they tell me to keep mine and other records separately so as not to confuse the backup system - but they are separate. But to be honest I am not very good when it comes to setting up sep folders and storing stuff in different places, but i do make a good sandwich.

Go to Computer, right-click on the drive (usually F:\), and check if "Read only" is checked.sometimes there's a physical switch on the USB device, you could sheck that's on the correct setting.
