I have laptop compaq Presario CQ57 with Windows7 ultimate.
Doownload ABODE Reader XI( 11.0.03) but have problem in istallation.
Install not FINISH but write this:

Error 1310.Error wriiting to FILE: C:\Config.Msi\PF6DEED.tmp.Verify that you hav access to that directory..

I not have this folder C:\Config.Msi in my PC.
What and where is the problem?I've never experienced that problem but I found this via an Internet search: How to Fix 1310 Error. Please let us know if you try it and it solves your problem. Ouch...a registry repair tool...Yeah, on second thought, maybe this should be researched further. Searches on 1310 Error seem to bring up a lot of references leading to a registry-repair approach to this problem. Hey everyone, I am not sure exactly where to post this so I am going to post it in both hardware and software (please forgive me).

I just upgraded my computer to:

ATI 7950
AMD FX (tm) - 8350 8-Core Processor
8 GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit

Also, reformatted and re installed windows. This just STARTED happening after the re-installation of windows.


The problem is that when I am not even using my computer, even at first start up, it is telling me I am using about 1/4 of my ram.

Maybe you guys can help. I will try and provide as much information as possible.

Although it says chrome a lot, even when chrome isnt open it still runs at high RAM when idle.

This is pretty normal with Windows Vista and newer. The OS is using the RAM for caching previously accessed files, or files it thinks you may need to access, to speed things up. So, nothing to worry about Calum nailed it.

It's SuperFetch.

And it's not a bad thing. If an application needs that memory, it get's released. Basically, Superfetch uses RAM that would otherwise sit completely unused to try to speed up the system by caching frequently used files or applications.

The alternative is for your expensive RAM to sit unused a lot of the time, which isn't nearly as favourable.

Does trend micro titanium 2013 require internet access to be installed and used out of the box for the time alloted(such as 1 year)? If so(BC I don't have a connection), what great antivirus options do I have for XP SP3?

What I've already got? Hiren's Boot Disk Versions(15.2) of Malwarebytes; Kaspersky Antirookit; ClamAntiVirus; Spybot S&D Combofix(not sure if it works right--gave me some kind out of date error and ask me if I wanted to use it in a limited fashion); Avira(runs from the command prompt, but stops before finishing talking about it does not find a .log file).

Here's why I asked the question: I don't have internet access, only need it to ensure that an old hard drive with old potential infections is healthy before putting into a newer machine(can't just format it. I would like to get some of the programs off it), and don't need to update anything. Besides operating system(XP SP3), my newer system at least or almost triples the requirements(P4 2.8GHz 80 GB--at least 40 GB free--3GB DDR-RAM). Please help me; I'm just looking for a great internet option that does not require internet access to use for SCANNING an old hard drive.I'd put that hard drive into a cheap EXTERNAL hard drive case and connect to a system that is online that already has a good antivirus running to tackle anything that tries to spread upon USB connection, and run a full drive scan on it externally from whereever you have internet since you have internet to report here unless you are doing so through a phone or tablet with internet access. Once the drive scanned clean using another COMPUTER with internet access, then you know that the drive is clean to be added as a slave on an offline system. If you have a friend with internet access and a good updated antivirus running maybe they will let you scan your drive in an external enclosure using there systems antivirus. * I'd make sure there system is up to date and scans clean first before attaching your drive. Once you know their system is clean and wont infect your drive then attach and scan your drive.

The only antivirus that I have worked with to update definitions for offline computers was with Norton AV in which you used to be able to download a definition file and update the definitions manually. But this was many years ago when many had dial-up around 2004.

All the antivirus's I work with today just connect over the WEB for updates, which is your current problem.

I have (believe it or not) tens of 000's of email msgs (outlook/XP). 000's of them I merely copied to a folder on the desktop and deleted them from outlook (I know I can copy them back into Outlook to use in that program. I want to do following:
1. Selectively copy SENDERS and recipients into my contact and/or address book. Honest. I don't understand the difference. Helllup, pleeze
2. Take two or more (preferably up to dozens, even hundreds at a time) and CONVERT into one word DOCUMENT. Then I will massively edit, to one document (this includes many emails different people covering one subject, lots of unsnipped text, duplicated ad nauseum in subsequent exchanges of emails) and, THANKFULLY delete the original emails.
3. Set up outlook such that, I and I alone, and not MS programmers by default can decide to keep names and addresses of senders and recipients. Ideally I want to be prompted "keep email adress (and add selective detail myself).
4. I want to clean up my address/contact BOOKS (What IS the difference?) lot of duplicated addresses, superseeded addresses, incorrect addresses.

On new PC Outlook 2010 profile name is : Test not Outlook
On new PC Outlook 2010 Data file name is : outlook.pst

location for this data file is

Name of the autocomplete file on old PC is Outlook.NK2

On the new PC I renamed it to Test.NK2 to match the Outlook 2010 profile name.

I located it in this path :

Possible ways that it was drained:

- Somehow someone either sniffed out or saw your CREDENTIALS via a keylogger malware or sniffing out unsecured info on network via a hack.

- Your same e-mail and password is the same with another site with a rogue employee that tested that against everything they could and when they found this they drained it.

- You had a really bad /weak password that was too easy to figure out or CRACK.

- Someone used your phone and you were not hacked but instead they burned up your money in calling fees.

- Someone used a clone phone outside of your control to drain it.

I work for a small ompany that occasionally receives computers that have Protected Health Information (PHI). Our current process is using DBAN or Killdisk to do a three pass overwrite and verification pass (DoD 5220 M). I am wondering if anyone else has experience with how to ERASE hard drives in a WAY that complies with all government regulations? We are going to be a covered entity which exposes us to external govt audits.

I've done a lot of research and issuing the secure erase command (built in to all ATA drives since 2001) is both faster and more efficient than ANY block overwrote utility. The Drives are scrapped NOT RESOLD. Do you have experience using secure erase? It was developed by the center for magnetic recording research and sponsored by the NSA so essentially it was a govt funded program and that's why their tool (HDDERASE.exe) is FREE. Other utilities cost money for additional features. Hirens boot CD is free and it includes both methods of secure erase (hdparm). Parted magic used to be free but now it's $4.99 but its got a whole bunch of other programs on it as well.

I just installed this program on Mom's computer. I've been looking for such a good, free anti-malware program for quite some time, even asked at other forums I belong to, but was always told "this one" or "that one" etc by others. It was like a wild goose chase finding a reliable, free anti-malware program. I have 3 windows laptops that I haven't installed anti-malware on, now I think I'll install MB on each of these computers.

Er, I have a question about MB: why when you're doing a quick scan, why is there a button that says "buy now" and next to this is an "activate" button? I thought MB was completely free, no need to worry about paying fees for updates for as long as you're using your computer (and MB) which might be many years to come? (Actually, I don't know too much about online security, but I'm taking an INFORMATION Security class at school this Fall '12 semester, and my class is using this book (see link) my class's information security book

Could you guys please tell me what you think of this book? This class is Principles in information security, which someone (who did take computer classes at her community college years ago in Texas) on another forum said was an Introduction to information security, this class is a 14 week class (online) but then again, my school does have, in addition, its own Intro to Information Security class which is another class in itself that is 5 weeks long, they said at school I'd be learning a lot more in Principles of Information Security class than in their Intro to Information Security class that they also offer, and I believed them.

Honestly it can never hurt furthering your education. Even if you do not stay in the IT field or decide that it is not for you any employer would look at like you are trying to better yourself and more of a driven type of person.

The book that you linked looks like it would be all theory and almost no implementation / design etc. My self from what I seen in the book it would drive me nuts just for the shear fact it would be all theory and no real world lessons. But I have always been a hands on person, I like learning from watching people and reading then experiment and when it is ready for testing then implement and test the if all is good set it up in a real world situation.

As far as a free good non active scanner you really can't beat MWB (malwarebytes). For good free automatic scanning suites it is very hard to beat Avast / MSE / SAS. Just remember do not install and configure more than 1 active AV suites ever!!!!

I have not used or even heard of there software but then again I am in the US and they are not to popular or recommended here in the US. They do not have that good of reviews from what I have read and believe that you would be much happy with another AV suite.

I do go online on this PC, but what I do is I use virtualization (thru VMWare PLAYER - guest OS of XP) to go online, since it has its own virtual HDD, so I believe this keeps my host OS free of accumulating malware (adware, spyware, etc) and I keep a fresh backup copy of this virtual machine so when/if this current copy of this XP guest's VHD gets infected, I'll just delete it and copy this backup XP guest onto the host, open it in VMWare Player, and presto! A fresh web SURFER PC (all without disrupting the host's applications/files that I'm currently working on) without having to wipe the host HDD, reinstall XP/service packs, programs, etc.

I am trying to enable Skype video calling so I can see my GRAND daughters. I have looked at several solutions through Google. NONE of them will work. I have a FUJITSU Lifebook with Windows 7 HOME premium. Can they see you? Are you sure they have a webcam and are ENABLING video (to you) at their end? Do they Skype with anyone else with full video functionality?

I have a Dell computer,with windows xp,and my Kodak printer won't print from computer.Printer prints if a paper is scanned manually,but when clicking on file and trying to print,it goes through the printing cycle.but does't print from pic on monitor.Any help is appreciated.I see you have been on the forum before, so you know how it goes. YES I have new ink for the printer,and it is about 6 months old.It will print manually ,but when I try to print from computer screen,it will print out a blank page.I've USED this site many times ,and have received help every time.I also forgot to mention,I've even tried a new USB cable.Thanks for any help you can give me.Do you hare another PC? Something else. REMOVE the printer in Device manager. Reboot. Plug in the printer, let it install again. See if you can do a test page. Try making a simple document in Word-pad and try to print it from Word-pad.

Hello to everyone!

I have vmWare hypervisor hanging out on a server, and I use ONE virtual machine with a desktop install of windows 7 to manage everything inside the network when I connect to the vmWare box remotely. This allows me to get to router web panels, ssh into MACHINES, and all the like without having opened up no more than the two ports that vmWare vSphere needs to communicate to the server.

In either event, I like to use that one management VM in full screen mode whenever I am doing something more involved, essentially making it seem like the vm was the OS on my client computer.

Either way, vmWare is giving me this annoying bar at the top. I can not click through it, nor see through it, making it impossible to reach TABS in firefox without re-sizing the firefox window so the tabs WOULD not be at the very top of the screen. (EDIT: I know I could use keyboard shortcuts, but it still prevents me from seeing tab titles, etc. Would still like to just find a way to hide it/get rid of it)

Is there anything, anywhere saying how to get rid of that? I have looked through some online documentation, looked through vCenter's settings, and have found nothing.

If it was, then how would you exit the VM? There would have to be some kind of shortcut, but then they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't conflict with a shortcut set up on your host or VM, so there could be unwanted effects. I can see why it's annoying, but equally I can see why it's there.
It would be better if it would autohide after a short period of time, like Windows' built in Remote Desktop.

I use Outlook Express for my Email. Running Windos XP. Use Explorer 8 as default. (newer versions don't work w/XP). I suddenly have a problem with links in my incoming Emails. Any links included in any Email don't open Explorer and also don't work if Explorer is open. I recently tried FIREFOX but had other problems with that and had to uninstall it. Can anyone help??Do you get a message along the lines of (paraphrasing because it's been a while) that the action is not allowed?
If so, you need to reset your default browser, this is often caused by installing/uninstalling Chrome actually, though Firefox can cause this too. To do this, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults and set Internet Explorer to be your default web browser.

Creating a financial model with cash flow calculations, based on an initial payment date (Month and Year only) (Amounts are then calculated and allocated to cells representing N number of years, each column headed, 2013, 2014 etc). The intitial MM and YYY entries are the issue.
I want a user of of the Excel SS model to enter a NN (for month ) in a cell, E9, and if user doesn’t enter a NN, for a msg to appear. No problem: =IF(E9>0," ","Month req'd") works fine. But I also want the same MESSAGE, or nicely, another message to appear) if the NN entered is >12. How to amend the IF function? The another message could be: “not a valid month”. Or is there a way that the larger than 12 number cannot be entered in the first palce?

I want the user to also enter a NNNN for year. The year must be >2012. So if no year or an earlier year is entered, a message to appear. Again no problem. =IF(F9<2013,"Year req'd "," ") works fine. But what if 2014 or 2023 is entered erroneously, INSTEAD of 2013? . Amend the IF function, so that if NNNN entered is greater than the first year of the cash flow, 2013, (the first column , headed 2013) a message appears. “use the first year of the cash flow”? How?

Now the interesting part; I don’t want the messages to be sitting there when the user opens a new instance of the SS, so – and this is very ingenious for another reason, I want the messages to appear only when in cell J14 an amount is entered >0.

If no NN in cell E9, and if in J14 NNN is >0, only then does the first of the above month message appear. How?

(The month and year in the month are important because the month number helps to calculate amounts when only a part year is involved. The financial year in my COUNTRY, Australia, is from 6 (June) to 7 (July) the next year). If month is 8 then I know my first year is 10 months, not 12 months. But how, in a further complication, do I calculate for the parts of the year? A LOOKUP table? 6 = 12 months, 7 = 11 months,…. 5 = 1 month? Many XP computers come with a CD that contains the software XP needs for sudio, video and other hardware. What is the Brand and Model of yhour computer?
If it is a Dell, go to the dell site at www.dell.com
But if it is HP goto the HP site at www.hp.com
For Acer it is www.acer.com
Sony also has a web site. So does Toshiba.
On the site, look for support and downloads.
Each site has specific instruction on how to download and install.

But...Did something strange happen to your PC? Did you try a program that claims to make it better?
Normally any audio driver should not just disappear.

I have been asked to look at a friends dell 910
He tried to free up some space and theft he pc would not boot.
He added the windows XL disk he had and tried a FRESH install and it came up with windows SETUP blue screen.
If you select install windows xp press enter.
It now says unpartitioned space 39mb
C: partition 1 7286mb 535mb free
It will only allow me to create a 31mb partition and that's not enough space for the xp
It won't let me delete c: as it contains temporary setup files .
All original disks with an external cd ROM rw

How can I delete the c : and start again?
Any help would be appreciated, there is no f11 and it only goes upto f10

First we have 3 pcs the one in question has 2 accounts mine and my brothers account. I have problems getting my brother off this PC at times and he doesn't have a problem with it. But when I go online I keep getting messages telling me that I need to get my player up dated.

Now all the pcs up dates AUTOMATICALLY and I don't have the problem with the other pc that I use. The only difference that that I can see between the two is that this is a shared pc and the other isn't. I've tried playing with the firewalls and have raised them hirer then the other pc and still getting the messages.

While I've been waiting though I've been experimenting with chrome and Silverlight work just fine with chrome but not explorer for some reason.

Silverlight is a flash player from Microsoft just like Adobe flash player required for some online flash files to run.

C:\Windows\System32 is where 64-bit components are stored, and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ is where 32-bit components are stored. 32-bit Applications, however, will get MAGICALLY redirected to C:\Windows\SysWow64 if they access C:\Windows\System32. This causes a lot of confusion.

There is also redirection in the registry, which is probably relevant here.

regsvr32.exe in C:\Windows\System32 would be the 64-bit program, which registers and unregisters 64-bit components. It acts weird with 32-bit components, and when it does work, it registers it into the main registry.

the regsvr32.exe in the SysWOW64 is the 32-bit version, and will REGISTER 32-bit components in a way so that 32-bit applications can see them; (registry access by 32-bit applications in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT get's redirected to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WOW6432Node" instead, so 32-bit applications will be looking for the COMPONENT registration there.

Presently I already have a software solution, but I want something better. I want two keyboards. Each can have some keys either re-mapped or made into macros.

I use RealDownloader. A few months ago it started downloading very slowly. Perhaps less than ONE fifth the speed that it used to. I'm not sure when or how it started. Perhaps after some update, or after I re-installed Windows 7 on my computer.

The rest of my Internet stuff SEEMS to be normal. PAGE loading, email loading.

Any ideas on how to GET Realdownloader back to normal?

You've replied to a discussion that's over 5 years old. We generally prefer members start a new TOPIC than re-open an old discussion.

In this case, I'll reply to your question. I GATHER you used CCLEANER's REGISTRY cleaner; you seemed to imply that in your post. While I've used CCleaner for years, including its registry cleaner, and will continue to do so, other members of the forum are strongly opposed to use of ANY registry cleaner. Keep in mind CCleaner can be a useful tool without using its registry cleaner.

I suggest you reinstall Paint.NET on top of your current/old installation and then try uninstalling it via Windows standard removal tool (in Control Panel).

Other possible solutions could include restoring to a Restore Point that dates back to a time prior when the problem started, if you think you have such a Restore Point available. You could also DOWNLOAD and install Revo Uninstaller and use it to remove Paint.NET. And then, reinstalled Paint.NET if you want it.

I am having a problem with attempting to OPEN pdf forms on our web site. I used to be able to click on the link and the form would open in pdf. Now I am GETTING a box with Find or Save links. I have a dual boot ( windows xp +Linux) with GRUB bootmanager system. I also had a boot virus, since it wasnt much of an issue i left it.All was going fine about a week ago. Then my CD RW started giving problems. I am not able to write or read from CD's. When the drive starts to write or read the system shuts down. It happens in both Linux and windows. But when we insert a blank CD the CD write dialog box opens. When i start brnng something it goes off once again. I am also not able to boot from a bootable disc(both windows and LInux) When it starts accesing the data the computer turns off. I tried interchanging cable's, it was of no use. I also opened the CDRW and cleaned it(like cleaning the lenses and refixing the cables its still of no use. I have also reset the CMOS in my mother board. I have a ASUS P4V533MX mother board, with intel 2.4 GHz processor, 256 MB RAM. Mc afee detects boot viruses but it has been there quite some time, only now the CDROM is giving problems.

Ram A tidy little setup you have there Ram, while you're SWAPPING out the cdrw to test it in another computer or fitting a known GOOD one to eliminate the cdrw as a problem, you may consider an extra stick or 3 of ram.
Needless to say, remove the virus.
Just re-reading your POST, do you have cdrw and cdrom or was the cdrom a typo?I have the same problem. PC also turns off when booting if there is a disk inside. I noticed that if I do not unplug the power cord from the outlet for the night, in the morning PC starts OK.
When I try to burn to disk or install drivers system also shuts down.
I DISCONNECTED the DVD-RW, but still PC shuts down when booting. This does not happen if I plug the power cord into outlet, wait for about 15 min and than turn on.
Where should I look for the reason?

My brother moved to a different state and we used to play VIDEO games together when we were LITTLE. We are wanting to play video games right now, but I would need a capture card of some sort. Is there any card I can use to stream the gameplay to him over Skype or any other FORM of program? If so, which capture card should I buy and how would I be able to do this?

I STARTED my VLC player to watch a Disney movie. It TELLS me there is a new version of VLC, so I start the DOWNLOAD while watching the movie.
Something goes wring. The download is aborted.
So I quit the movie and look for VLC updates. Thee wee more than just a aht a few. That seems off for a free program.
Anyhow, I find what I think is a good download site and start the install. I unchecked the default box and unchecked the addition things that would like me to download.
I am not crazy. But somehow a download for Real Media Player started. I canceled it. I have not idea where it came from.
Finally got a good download from a reliable source, I think. Watched the movie with no problem. But Then I got to thinking. and did some searching.

I have a HARD drive that has 2 windows xp installed on it, i have a PROGRAM that i want to MOVE from one windows to another, because i don't have install disc and it was a one copy program made just for this computer and i am wondering is it possible to move(copy) it from one windows to another?

What would be requirement to do such a THING? and what is the procedure to do such thing or tutorial if you could point me to one id be greatefull.You cannot "move" it. You need to install it in the new Windows installation.

I realize that typically, you should have a less vague title than that, but I honestly don't know what to put there other than "It isn't working". I'm using Windows 7, and apparently that means my copy of Windows Media Player is Windows Media Player 12. Whenever I open a video, it'll open and begin playing the video, but the time bar at the bottom won't appear. I also can't click the minimize, restore, or exit buttons. I can't click the pause, fast forward or rewind buttons either. That's what happens if the video DOES open. Oftentimes, videos or audio files won't open at all, and will instead load permanently. When I open task manager, there's nothing under applications. When I switch over to processes, wmplayer.exe is there. If I clixk "End Process", it will bring up the "Are you SURE you want to end wmplayer.exe 32" screen, and when I hit "Yes", it disappears. And that's it. Nothing happens after that. wmplayer.exe doesn't disappear from the list of processes, it doesn't stop loading. Nothing happens. The problem is seemingly worse with just audio files. It'll typically open, then play through the FILE (with the time bar appearing but being frozen in place a couple seconds through). After that, it'll replay the file again, then go silent, and I won't be able to click anything on the player. If I right click the taskbar icon for it and select "Close window", it'll just select the player again, and nothing will happen. I also get all the same problems ending the process. If the program does open and I can select it from applications, I and end it there, though it takes a long time for Windows to determine Windows Media Player is unresponsive and end it. Letting it check for solutions does nothing. When I select Windows Media Player from a menu or my taskbar (as opposed to opening a video with it), it just does nothing, permanently. It doesn't show up in applications, but does show up, again un-endable, in processes. The only way to stop the permanent loading once it starts is to restart my computer.


I had thought I could maybe just uninstall it and then reinstall it, and it would be fixed, but when I went to the Windows site, it seemed to indicate that Windows Media Player comes with Windows 7, and that that was the only way to get it (by buying a new copy of Windows 7). Also, like all good products, Windows' help site for Windows Media Player features a measly six questions under troubleshooting, none of them helpful. So basically, I can't watch any video files, or listen to any audio files. I can't open Windows Media Player to try to check for updates. I can't end it once it starts loading. I don't know if I can uninstall and reinstall it. Anyone know how to remedy this? I have SOMETHING I need to do that involves video and audio files, and this is making it literally impossible. First, I do not know how to make Windows Media Player work with video files when it does not play the video. Many users have complained about this even before Windows 7 was released.

Personally, I like VideoLan.Thanks. I downloaded that VideoLan thing, and it was simple enough to set my audio and video files to open with it by default.

Does ANYONE know of any Android app or Windows 8 program for tracking a rain gauge? I've got a cheap rain gauge outside and I'd like to have some software to record the rain amount so I can keep track of how much its rained here. I'd like some features like charts, year to date, weekly, and daily totals, and highest and lowest days. Personally this is a task i would go old school on and use a pencil and paper...that's just me.

I've never used the public version myself but I have used the full desktop version at work and it's really good. You would still record your data in a format such as Excel and then insert this file into Tableau. From there you can play about with different visualisations of the data, the resulting dashboard can be interactive too (e.g. adjustable date range) which is pretty cool.

Only catch with the free public version is that the data that you add is visible to the general public but for something like rainfall this shouldn't be a big deal!

What about having the column headings viewable at all times in the saved excel file?
