Solve : Capture certain data at outside physical locations? |
Answer» need to capture details of person (work start-finish), equipment (hours used), (materials used), location (gps!?), RESULT (picture of end result each day/end of job - by digital CAMERA!?) and date/time of jobs carried out Think, as an example, of a team pouring CONCRETE for a new highway. Would LIKE to receive all information digitally/wirelessly, preferably all data together, preferably in real time. How to capture all this data? Jobs are based on a roster. Six such crews per day, every day. Some jobs take more than one day. Are there solutions on the market? Create a new system? Help and ADVICE appreciated.Do you want some video capture of work being done, or are still photos sufficient? Since cameras in cell/smart phones are very common now, their use seems to fit into your requirements. Beyond that, I'm not sure what to suggest. Hopefully, some other members will have additional input on this. |

Solve : Smartvoip Application, My Account Hacked? |
Answer» 4 days ago, i had 10 euros in my smartvoip application, then yesterday i saw it became 0. Possible ways that it was drained: For the fact that you have 20 calls you can track down who they called and try to piece it together maybe. You can perform a lookup if its the same phone number for all 20 calls etc and see who is at that location and call them, not from your phone, but a payphone etc to stay anonymous and ask them questions. The reason to stay anonymous is because some phone numbers when called charge fees, so trying to avoid you getting trapped into surprise fees if its a bad number. Or you can file with the phone company that it was hacked and get a refund/credit to your account. For the fact that its a small amount of money, I WOULD think that the phone company would likely credit you 10 euros which is cheaper than a drawn out process which would cost more than 10 euro's. As far as knowing if your safe, I'd put in a small amount of money and see if it disappears again. Although I'd personally run a very good scan on the system to be sure as well as make sure that the password used for the new credentials is not one that can be guessed or easily cracked, and one that is not used with any other accounts. My brother was taken for $1750 US when someone got his paypal info and drained his checking account. In the end I found out that he was using the same complicated password with all websites he registered with as well as paypal. So one of the sites had a rogue employee or was hacked and a team of hackers hit him up against every banking site etc and elsewhere for access to money to steal and they left him broke. Worst of all it was the end of the month and he needed the money to pay rent. I had to give him a loan to pay rent, and he filed with the bank that his paypal was hacked and in the end he never saw his money again. There was some sort of protection that he opted out of or some other reason why Paypal didnt cover his loss.Probably smartvoip taking their monthly payment... At any rate that'll be logged...but that's my guess.i dont think this is the case of "rogue employee or something" bec this username is UNIQUE and i didnt use this username in any other online registration or application. i really dont know, i just changed the contact number, email, and password of that account. and good thing he/she/it didnt delete my saved contacts if this happened again, i will be making a new account ---------------------- list of calls he/she/it have made.. (all have +63, meaning he made all calls in philippines) (im guessing he/she/it may have dialed random numbers to call random people and maybe mess with them on phone.) |

Solve : Parted magic / Secure Erase? |
Answer» I work for a small ompany that occasionally receives computers that have Protected Health Information (PHI). Our current process is using DBAN or Killdisk to do a three pass overwrite and verification pass (DoD 5220 M). I am wondering if anyone else has experience with how to ERASE hard drives in a WAY that complies with all government regulations? We are going to be a covered entity which exposes us to external govt audits. ...Liquid Technology’s secure data destruction services meet or exceed all industry-specific regulations, including:EDIT: This is not a recommendation. You can find 'Liquid Technology' and similar companies in a Google search. The have a short video on the web site. They just grind drives to to bits, no data recovery possible. Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 12, 2013, 07:55:30 PM If the drives are into be scrapped, erasing them is pointless. The platters are soft material and can be readily mutilated beyond recovery of data...DoD used to require both. It has been changed. http://www.destructdata.com/dod-5220-erasure-standard.html "...As of the June 2007 edition of the DSS C&SM, overwriting is no longer acceptable for sanitization of magnetic media; only degaussing or physical destruction is acceptable..." Solve : GW Basic - Need a cd copy? |
Answer» Use GOSUB instead of GOTO. And place a comment on the line to explain what the GOSUB does. Quote from: DaveLembke on March 26, 2013, 02:32:35 PM I have a 5.25" floppy in storage that is DOS 2.11 and it has GW-Basic on it. I think DOS 2.11 was the first to come with GW-Basic. When purchasing a retail copy of MS-DOS, people will have trouble getting a version earlier than 3.20. Microsoft did not offer a GENERIC version of MS-DOS until v3.20 in 1986 and before then, all variants of the OS were OEM ones. Depending on the OEM, BASIC was distributed as either BASICA.EXE or GWBASIC.EXE. I was looking at the paper manual I have for GW-Basic which says "This version of GW-BASIC requires MS-DOS version 3.2 or later." The initial version of GW-BASIC was the one included with Compaq DOS 1.13 (released with the Compaq Portable in 1983) and was ANALOGOUS to IBM BASICA 1.10. It used the CP/M-derived file control blocks for disk access and did not support subdirectories. Later versions added this feature and improved graphics and other capabilities. GW-BASIC 3.20 (1986) added EGA graphics support (no version of BASICA or GWBASIC had VGA support) and was in effect the last new version released before it was superseded by QBASIC. I can't thank you enough for the website. I will check it out. The person did not intend to get it for free. Just needed a copy. I did check eBay and Amazon previous to posting this question and could not find a copy for sale. I also contacted Microsoft and asked if I could buy a copy of the CD. I was told that I could not and that they could not be of any further assistance in directing me to where I might find one. After that conversation I was very discouraged. I am going to check out the site you suggested. Again, thank you so much! Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 26, 2013, 10:02:40 AM Salmon Trout, Excellent!MS-DOS 3.3 and GW-BASIC discs and manual are sold in original package on Eb AY for about $20. Although MS does no make a direct profit, as way as anybody knows, this kind of sale is allowed on eBay by MS. However, making additional copies for any kind of distribution MUST be approved in writing by MS. |

Solve : I'm not sure what is cousing this to happen? |
Answer» First we have 3 pcs the one in question has 2 accounts mine and my brothers account. I have problems getting my brother off this PC at times and he doesn't have a problem with it. But when I go online I keep getting messages telling me that I need to get my player up dated. I keep getting messages telling me that I need to get my player up dated. The player seems like its talking about Adobe Flash Player. It wont update automatically if you have chosen "Don't download and install updates automatically (manually)" before installing the earlier version. Anyways, assuming it is the Adobe flash player that's popping up messages, you can download adobe flash player from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ You can uncheck "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional (0.9 MB)" this option and download the player. Save the file to the desktop, run it; it will automatically download and install the latest update. Be sure to close all internet browsers while running this file.On that note PCDoc he may want to run the Flash removal tool from the same site 1st...it removes all older remnants ...as they have been known to cause issues as well. Thanks for the advice, but last its not just the media player that messages says needs up dating. The reason they keep saying ALL the players need up dating. The one that got me was the one that said that OverDrive Media needed to be 2.5.1 or higher and when I checked it, it was 3.2.2. The also has been happened with Sliverlight (at least I think its, called Silverlight) anyway it says that needed to be updated so I could watch Netflix, but again Sliverlight says I have the newest.Oh I don't know if this is a factor it might be, my brother uses Google chrome as his primary way to get online, I use internet explore. What are you using OverDrive Media for ? ? Do you need it on this PC ? ?...or did your Brother install it for some reason ?I installed it couse it is required to check out audiobooks from my library. I have a older virgin on the other pc, that works just fine. Oh and I LOOKED it up and it is Microsoft Silverlight that it says needs up dating. While I've been waiting though I've been experimenting with chrome and Silverlight work just fine with chrome but not explorer for some reason. Silverlight is a flash player from Microsoft just like Adobe flash player required for some online flash files to run. Instead of using Microsoft Internet Explorer, I would suggest you to try out either Mozilla Firefox or if you are using chrome, well n good. I use firefox, and I can check the version of all the install addons from WITHIN the browser. You can also set to update some particular addons automatically when updates are available. If there are any updates to the firefox itself, same will be downloaded and installed automatically. Unlike internet explorer where you have to manually upgrade from like 7 to 8.Quote from: Lost_couse on August 28, 2013, 02:25:30 PM While I've been waiting though I've been experimenting with chrome and Silverlight work just fine with chrome but not explorer for some reason. Have you tried updating Silverlight? You should be able to download the latest version Here. I believe the standard installation will install the Internet Explorer plugin. Quote from: PCdoc on August 29, 2013, 12:47:43 AM Silverlight is a flash player from Microsoft just like Adobe flash player required for some online flash files to run.Silverlight is the component used for running Silverlight Applications. The BIGGEST differences between Adobe Flash Player and Silverlight is that Silverlight doesn't suck horribly. It hasn't picked up traction over Flash Player though for numerous reasons. I assume one of the reasons is probably simply because it's something made by MS. I think there was rumour it was being "abandoned" also. Quote Instead of using Microsoft Internet Explorer, I would suggest you to try out either Mozilla Firefox or if you are using chrome, well n good. This forum is not for you to profess your subjective browser preferences in lieu of providing actual assistance. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 29, 2013, 02:34:07 AM This forum is not for you to profess your subjective browser preferences in lieu of providing actual assistance. Well sorry, more than bit used to chat environment and new to forums Be careful there is a virus /adware out there that says you need to update your flash player and you give it access by clicking update now. when in doubt go to the website of that particular player and update from there. Run a good malware detection program like malwarebytes or spybot search and destroy or superantispyware (search google) and run full scans. Quite often these add/spyware programs are attached to torrent sites. With two users using the PC a registry cleaner and defrag program (find for free) to get all the broken files out could stop software searching for updates if the PC is up to date and has never been cleaned.I'm not sure I fully understand the above post, but please ignore it. Nobody should ever use a "registry cleaner"Agreed... |

Solve : comctl32.ocx win7? |
Answer» there was not a copy of it in SysWOW64 but yes it works thank you very much sir top marks for this forum now i can get BACK to it.Just to explain for future readers, on x64 systems there are two SYSTEM folders. C:\Windows\System32 is where 64-bit components are stored, and C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ is where 32-bit components are stored. 32-bit Applications, however, will get MAGICALLY redirected to C:\Windows\SysWow64 if they access C:\Windows\System32. This causes a lot of confusion. 32-bit Applications, however, will get magically redirected to C:\Windows\SysWow64 if they access C:\Windows\System32. This causes a lot of confusion.HUH Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 18, 2013, 07:17:26 PM HUHPrecisely. I wrote about this behaviour some time ago. Basically, 32-bit applications are often written to access components in C:\Windows\System32. This is why MS couldn't just make a new System64 folder for 64-bit components. In order to be as compatible as possible, Applications running under WoW64 (32-bit apps on 64-bit windows, that is) can still access C:\Windows\System32, but those requests are redirected to C:\Windows\SysWOW64. 32-bit applications that are aware of the redirection can access the actual System32 folder contents by accessing C:\Windows\sysnative. This can be tested without having to write applications (or something) by using something like Command Prompt. C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe is the Command Prompt, as we all know; on 64-bit systems, this is a 64-bit executable. However on 64-bit systems the 32-bit version is still available in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. |

Solve : Microsoft Word 2002: Convert Text Records to Tables ?? |
Answer» I brought the following text lines into Word 10 (aka 2002) & added the ~'s to the blank line paragraphs: How can I transform the address 'records' into tables sortable on name ? Isn't Word 2002 Mac-Only?No, it's for Microsoft Windows. I believe it is also commonly known as Word XP SINCE it is part of Office XP. Office 10 = Office 2002 = Office XP. Info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office_XPBackground: My address book file came from DOS Wordperfect which could perform most publication, & some spreadsheet and data base chores. My experience had taught me to avoid all MS utility software whenever practical & cost EFFICIENT. After over a decade of forgotten frustrations & disappointments I picked up MS Office Pro 2002 at a Goodwill store for $2 & decided to try it to update my addresses. I had retained enough pain avoidance residual memory to know to restrict my discomfort factor to just one MS program. And with my wife's often repeated 'advice' to 'just get it done', my plan became clear. STARTING with: P name1:T phone 1 P adrs: T phone 2 P adrs: T Phone 3 P misc: info P P etc. ... about 130 of these, where T= Tab, P= paragraph Solution was the following; where ~ = unique character, & a P < ~P , ~P~P < P , ~P < ~ , SORT, ~ < P One constraint was that Word didn't like losing all paragraphs in the process. I miss WordPerfect which could define & sort on fields & see the split SCREEN formatting codes while experimenting with them. It did most of the spread sheet stuff I ever needed. Word Help is not very descriptive of the menu driven procedures & skimpy on examples, but that may be that I've never had the patience to go scavenger hunting after them. You seem to be ignoring the advice given by my and Rob to use Excel. You're still talking about word processors. Quote from: LoveMusic on April 30, 2012, 03:24:13 PM I really can't make any sense of the above info re: your data. I would think adrs means address, yet you have phone following it. The T and P usage is also not clear. How do they relate to a data file? I have about 130 records of name, address & phone number sets. Here is an example: Allan Biggs Home: 987-876-765 543 Joy St Work: 567-765-876 Braless Ohio Cell: 765-876-567 he likes to put his pants on backwards MS Word 2002 can sort on paragraphs or on tables but not on fields. Sorting on the above will break out each paragraph-line & compare with all other paragraph-lines destroying the record set format. My solution transforms all the sets (using search & replace) from double to single paragraph delimiters, sort the paragraphs on name, then restore the original formatting for printing. Sorting, Fields, compare, recordset, transforms... Sounds like what you're trying to use a word processor document as a database. WordPerfect, to my recollection, was similar in function to Microsoft Works, in that it combined a number of applications (word processing, database, spreadsheet, etc) in a simplified form, but allowed interoperability between the various modules. (mail merging of fields in a database in a word processor document). Microsoft Word is only a Word Processor. So you aren't going to find tools for manipulating and dealing with text as if it were in a database. Instead, Word can work with the other components of Office to provide that sort of thing. Actually, looking at it, it looks like you don't really WANT a word processor document at all, but rather a database with reports that you can print.Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 01, 2012, 01:59:27 AM Sorting, Fields, compare, recordset, transforms...Yes, indeed, a database application does seem to be the best solution. ...sounds like what you're trying to use a word processor document as a database... ? *** A very elementary one ! ...WordPerfect, to my recollection, was similar in function to Microsoft Works, in that it combined a number of applications (word processing, database, spreadsheet, etc) in a simplified form, but allowed interoperability between the various modules. (mail merging of fields in a database in a word processor document)... *** Right again - a single multi-faceted prgm ! This was the 1st need beyond Wordpad & Notepad & Editpad Lite that I've needed since Wordperfect for about 25yrs. Having to guess my way thru the Un-Helpfile hints & format codes to learn what Word does & doesn't do - was the hard part. I was able to do what I want without having to struggle thru yet another MS prgm & I've learned something in the process. Can't beat simplicity & success - can you ? |

Solve : Windows Media Player Not Working? |
Answer» I realize that typically, you should have a less vague title than that, but I honestly don't know what to put there other than "It isn't working". I'm using Windows 7, and apparently that means my copy of Windows Media Player is Windows Media Player 12. Whenever I open a video, it'll open and begin playing the video, but the time bar at the bottom won't appear. I also can't click the minimize, restore, or exit buttons. I can't click the pause, fast forward or rewind buttons either. That's what happens if the video DOES open. Oftentimes, videos or audio files won't open at all, and will instead load permanently. When I open task manager, there's nothing under applications. When I switch over to processes, wmplayer.exe is there. If I clixk "End Process", it will bring up the "Are you SURE you want to end wmplayer.exe 32" screen, and when I hit "Yes", it disappears. And that's it. Nothing happens after that. wmplayer.exe doesn't disappear from the list of processes, it doesn't stop loading. Nothing happens. The problem is seemingly worse with just audio files. It'll typically open, then play through the FILE (with the time bar appearing but being frozen in place a couple seconds through). After that, it'll replay the file again, then go silent, and I won't be able to click anything on the player. If I right click the taskbar icon for it and select "Close window", it'll just select the player again, and nothing will happen. I also get all the same problems ending the process. If the program does open and I can select it from applications, I and end it there, though it takes a long time for Windows to determine Windows Media Player is unresponsive and end it. Letting it check for solutions does nothing. When I select Windows Media Player from a menu or my taskbar (as opposed to opening a video with it), it just does nothing, permanently. It doesn't show up in applications, but does show up, again un-endable, in processes. The only way to stop the permanent loading once it starts is to restart my computer. Thanks. I downloaded that VideoLan thing, and it was simple enough to set my audio and video files to open with it by default.I think the volume controls work together. You system volume should be at more or less half way if you want to use the control on the VLC. It also does full screen if you want to present to a small audience. Moreever it seems something messed up with registry keys of windows media player.... you may download advance system care from www.iobit.com... Install>LAUNCH>tootlbox>win fix>fix windows media player.....and all will be ok...... Moreever it will help you to clear out some more pc related problams....have a nice time with this freeware..... |

Solve : [Q] Rain Gauge Software? |
Answer» Does ANYONE know of any Android app or Windows 8 program for tracking a rain gauge? I've got a cheap rain gauge outside and I'd like to have some software to record the rain amount so I can keep track of how much its rained here. I'd like some features like charts, year to date, weekly, and daily totals, and highest and lowest days. I've searched on here and also on Google, but haven't found anything that lets you chart your own data. Any software would be great. Thanks.Do you have a spreadsheet program (Excel, LiberOffice Calc, etc.) installed on your computer? Such an app could be created with a spreadsheet if you know enough about spreadsheet software.Just curious. Does the OP mean that the gauge has a sensor and remote control link? Just curious. Does the OP mean that the gauge has a sensor and remote control link? That's an interesting question but I very much doubt he has that since he said " I've got a cheap rain gauge outside ...". I presume he will manually read the gauge and then enter data into his app. Curious to see his reply. YEA, it is a "manual" $5 one I got from tractor supply. I empty it every morning. I do currently use Excel to record it, but I was hoping for something a little more advanced and "prettier". Excel charts just don't look that good to me. Really wish I had some programming experience so I could do this myself.Well, Excel provides a wide range of formatting options for charts. So, frankly, I suspect you are not very knowledgeable about charting in Excel. Many references and tutorials are available online. A Google search on charting with excel will yield plenty of them. Right. Look on line and find lots of stuff for Spreadsheets free. One of so many: http://chandoo.org/wp/2009/11/06/fancy-gauge-chart/ Yet anther: http://www.excelforum.com/excel-charting-and-pivots/332106-excel-rainfall-chart-template.html I think thee is a way to put background images in Excel. If not, you can print a nice PHOTO in very light pastel and then print a chart over on top of it. Would make a nice hard bound workbook project for a science fair. I was hoping for some sort of software or android app similar to Libra that would track rain INSTEAD of weight. The specific gravity of water is one. LolPersonally this is a task i would go old school on and use a pencil and paper...that's just me.It does a lot more than you need but you may WANT to look at this: http://www.tableausoftware.com/products/public I've never used the public version myself but I have used the full desktop version at work and it's really good. You would still record your data in a format such as Excel and then insert this file into Tableau. From there you can play about with different visualisations of the data, the resulting dashboard can be interactive too (e.g. adjustable date range) which is pretty cool. Only catch with the free public version is that the data that you add is visible to the general public but for something like rainfall this shouldn't be a big deal!Quote from: patio on August 23, 2013, 08:11:55 PM Personally this is a task i would go old school on and use a pencil and paper...that's just me. I'm not even sure if I have any plain paper at my house, lol. Just from a quick glance, that does kinda look like what I was imagining in a desktop software. Definitely checking it out. |

Solve : CSV files in Excel? |
Answer» HELLO, I am opening a CSV file in Microsoft Excel using Microsoft 7 OS. As instructed by the file creator, I labeled the columns and then proceeded to widen the columns in order that the data was easier to read. When I CLOSE the program, I click on "file" "save as" "csv" and get this warning. (see attached screenshot). I've tried answering yes and no but after finally saving the file, I lose the changes I made to the column widths, etc. The new column labels are intact. How should I save this file in csv format without losing the changes I make? Also, I would like to scroll down toward the end of the page and still be able to see those column headings placed on the first row of my sheet. Thanks in advance David [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]A "csv" file is, as the name implies, a file consisting of comma separated values. It is a plain text file. It contains just the values and the commas, and no EXTRA data about column widths, or other formatting. To do that you need to save the file as an Excel WORKSHEET. Use the "Save as TYPE" dropdown in the Excel file save dialog to select an Excel spreadsheet or worksheet format. To keep the headings visible while scrolling use the freeze pane feature. http://spreadsheets.about.com/od/excel101/ss/freeze_pane.htm Thanks, I was afraid of that. I use this file to run another app and the csv file data changes daily. This means I would have to update the csv file reformat and save as excel file each time I work with it.....urgggg. What about having the column headings viewable at all times in the saved excel file? ThanksQuote from: johnson094 on August 21, 2013, 11:37:26 AM What about having the column headings viewable at all times in the saved excel file? Read my post again. My bad....thanks for the help.Tip: To quickly adjust column widths, use the technique shown at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/change-the-column-width-and-row-height-HP001216383.aspx#BMchangecolwidth |

Solve : missing slc.dll? |
Answer» RESTARTED my computer and windows started up like normal but when i entered my password and it went to start upit brought up an explorer.exe system error. "the program cant start because slc.dll is missing from your computer. try re-installing the program to fix this problem". then when windows loads in all i get is a black screen with my MOUSE cursor. I have tried booting windows in safe mode with and without networking. I tried start up repair. and i also tried to boot it from a previous boot, not sure how to say that. this ll had not effect ordifferance. dont know if this is the right AREA too pen this thread in. UPDATE: i did a system restore to a time earlier today and that seems to have fixed it. I will return if it happens again later on. I would like to know why this happened so if you have any ideas i would appreciate them.I take it your running windows 7. Do a Search for hirens boot cd that has a live windows 7 version on it I think its up to v15 now. Also has a lot of tools for fixing machines. Also if you have a windows 7 cd put it in and from command type SFC.EXE /SCANNOW with a SPACE after sfc.exe. Doubt it fill your dll but it will repair any other issues you may not be aware of. If the worst comes to worst format and reinstall 7. It puts all the users files on the c drive in a folder called old windows. You don't even loose your stuff these days. |
