PGP, Ver. 10, is trying to install "missing components" after each system start but doesn't find the necessary files. What causes this behavior, how can I get rid of it?PGP has been around for a long time. It presently is a commercial program from Symantec. But there sis an open source community.

As ton your specific issue, there might be a conflict with you current version of Windows. Hard to sa without more details.This is unfortunately not an answer to my question. Additionally, there is no such thing like a free download of version 10 of PGP - or tell me if I'm wrong. I signed up with Symantic, the download of a trial version of Symantec Encryption Desktop Corporate from https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/vrtcontroller is being denied, too. How to proceed now...?

Does someone else use this PC or have access to it ? ?I contacted them, they did not reply. No one else has access to my machine.

NOTE: Most if not all Symantec apps need their own un-installer to remove properly at their site...
If you feel it's still an app that you need go with the Open source ver. which was mentioned above.
After all it started out originally as an open source project...The open source project links end up at Symantec - from where I can't download as I mentioned above. Seems to be a circulum viciosum :-)That's a bummer...same thing they did ruining all Peter Norton's fine products...
Oh Well...i'd get rid of it then.You would - but I don't give up yet :-) Can you try to download a trial or free version from Symantec? Maybe they don't like my European IP... But then, I also accessed their website VIA a proxy that creates an American IP - still no sucess...Sure...give it a go.

However i believe what's happening is it's detecting the previous broken install...THEREFORE the new one hiccups...which is why i suggested removing it completely using the Symantec un-installer.Up- and download from a file storage site is a wise idea. Tell me when it's done and name the corresponding link.

As for un-installing with a Symantec un-install tool: Can you upload this for me, too? Due to awkward living conditions, I only have limited Internet access , I have to WAIT until I'm sitting at a hot spot. That won't be before afternoon. For now, I say thank you and good bye - it's already 8:30 pm over here.I finally found a download possibility for a trial version. This one works now. Un-installing the old version however left a lot of trash behind. Could you please let me know where I can download the un-install tool for PGP that is reccommended by Symantec?The trial doesn't work either. Any of these wound be a better choice that PGP.
One should not use PGP unless one fully understands what it brings to the table.
The free programs are almost as good and have no skeletons in the closet.

Have just read about suspicious MAILS on this forum and tools to identify them. I sometimes get EMAILS of unknown origin. How can I find out where they came from without opening them ? If they might be damaging, why open them?

It's safer just to delete them.I do delete them, but sometimes I'm EXPECTING an answer from somewhere or someone, & maybe I'm deleting what I really wanted. Guess that's the way it goes ! Most email applications and services, such as GMail, will BLOCK web CONTENT from unknown addresses.

A good anti virus app (which you haven't mentioned) plus MANUAL scans with either MalwareBytes or Super AntiSpyware are fine. I also use SpywareBlaster for passive protection.My current protection package:

I have 4 computers, so when I'm defragging and running virus scans and stuff, it's quite a pain to run to one and click this and run to the next and click this and then wait for it to finish and keep track of them so I know when it's FINISHED and everything. a) Get an external (usb) cd/dvd rom drive. Burn the OS (Operating system) image to cd/dvd and format using that cd/dvd.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 1501 computer with Windows Vista Home Basic.

SOMETHING changed on the main page when I open Word. In the past when I opened Word the most recent documents were listed on the right side of the page. Now nothing is there but there is just a thin vertical dividing line about two thirds of the way from the left hand side. Inside the portion to the left of this dividing line is what looks like a miniature perpendicular symbol. If I click on the symbol it switches to an "L" and then to a backwards "L" when I click again.

Formerly, if I wanted to open any saved document I would double click on the yellow open document icon and a list of all my saved documents would appear. If I do that now, no list appears but a new large screen appears with the word open in the top left corner. I cannot write anything on this screen or at least cannot figure out how to.

I cannot figure out how to "get back" to the normal situation where recently opened documents are listed on the right side of the page and more importantly, I am able to open previously saved documents.

Do you mean the Windows Explorer icon on the taskbar? If you click on Start, and then click Documents to open your Documents folder, do you see your files there?

This was something I had already tried, but no luck. I guess footnotes aren't the kind of fields/numbers that get updated via F9.

Does anyone know how to remove the Getting started dialogue BOX in Excel 2010. It's on the right of the spreadsheet and takes up far too much room especially when you need more than one window open at the same time.

Here again, this applies to Excel 2003 and older versions, but not to Excel 2010. Starting with Excel 2007, the File --> Options -->... no longer exists.

If the machine went down I could roll out the image and get it going again ASAP.

Well, there's CloneZilla, which is free, or the rather more difficult partimage. If you are running Windows Server 2003 family OS you may be able to use Remote Installation Services (RIS) which is an optional component that is included. You can use RIS to create installation images of operating systems or of complete computer configurations, including desktop settings and applications. You can then make these installation images available to users at client computers. You can also specify which RIS server will provide installations to a given client computer, or you can ALLOW any RIS server to provide the installation.

When you use RIS, a CD-ROM is not required for installation of an operating system on a client computer. The client computers must support remote booting with the Pre-Boot eXecution Environment (PXE) ROM, or they must be started with a remote-startup floppy disk and contain a network adapter that is supported by that disk.

You can use RIS to create automated installation images of Windows Server 2003 family operating systems, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.
I don't believe CloneZilla will do network backups...unless they have changed since i last tested it...

I have just deleted Neat scanner software from my Toshiba Satellite laptop. However, the Neat icon is still in my taskbar. It is non functional. (Clicking on it produces a dark screen). Then I unlocked the toolbar. I right clicked again and got Start Task Manager. This identified that the Neat soft ware was running even though it had been deleted. The task manager made short work of the icon (following the directions) and it is gone. Now, if I can get updated software from the Neat company... Can't recommend Company at this point.A quick check on their site...

I need software that will import a .pdf file and then PRODUCE a .pdf file that has fillable fields. I know there is software that will allow a person to do this manually but I need one that will AUTOMATICALLY find the fields in the .pdf and then make them electronically editable. For example: I could have a job application that is in a pdf form that is not editable on a computer (I would have to print it out and fill it out by hand). I would want software that can take in the job application file, detect the blank fields, make those fields editable, and then output a .pdf that has fillable fields. Free or inexpensive software is what I'm looking for. Please don't recommend Adobe Acrobat as it is what I am trying to find an alternative for. If one needs a form like some published d form, one mist create an new, original form that gathers the same information, but is not a mere copy of the published form.

Having TROUBLE uninstalling KASPERSKY 2013 antivirus program. Tried uninstalling using uninstalling program, which seemed to work, but didn't. Then tried the popular "Kavremover", but didn't work.

I tried using the site; "Wilders Security Forums". To no avail.

I got a system read from "GetSysInfo" for some computer experts.

I really love using it, but lately I've been having PROBLEMS with it and was wondering if there's a fix. It'll download all the email headers OK, and I can choose which ones I want to delete. But when I answer "yes" to the ones I've chosen, it returns an error message "Cannot delete Mail (2, 4, etc.). Socket not connected."

I can randomly choose to delete 2 or 3, but then I have to start all over again to get 3 or 4 more until I finally get them all. My neighbor uses the same prog. on her Win 7 machine and her's is doing the same thing.

I used their support link weeks ago with the problem and still no reply.

I know there are later versions available, but they all behave the same way,. Thanks in advance for help with GETTING this dandy little prog. to behave again. If any other info is needed, just let me know.

Frankly, I don't much advantage to Email Remover. If you're using an email client with a POP email account and have your email client set to delete messages from the server once retrieved, you've basically accomplished the same thing. I'm currently using Microsoft Outlook 2007 as my email client and it does not download images EMBEDDED in an email until I tell it to do that.

Well, I had uninstalled Bitdefender recently using Revo UNINSTALLER PRO(trial) as it is UNWANTED from me and will conflict with my AVG. Just before it uninstall itself, it recommended me Bitdefender 60 Seconds Virus Scanner for free, and saying that it is compatible with other ANTIVIRUSES. So I decided to try it out.
The scan was indeed 60 Seconds, but what does this scanner do? What is it? Can it detect & remove viruses like AV's? Or does it just gives you a SYSTEM health report?
Any help is appreciated!

1) When I CONNECT my seagate, do I need to have both USB cords connected, or just one? My PC has only two working USB ports, and I like one of them to be for my mouse. I have noticed that with the seagate drive, when I connect the 1st USB cord, it actually registers on my PC...so in that case wondering if I really need both connected?


2) Assume my EHD is working and I am able to "restore", so this means all I do is go to windows/backup and restore/restore and it will restore everything as it was, including settings like time zone, desktop wallpaper, and alike?
Would this mean as WELL all my documents and pictures would populate in the exact same places?
For instance, in documents, I organize it, so I have documents...then a subfolder with all "college" documents. I also have a subfolder with all "budget" documents. This means if the EHD works, I simply click on "John's PC", restore, and under documents not only would I have all documents, but they would be organized and arranged like they were before?

See, previously when I had this drive, I was not sure how it worked. So I would simply have to drag "My documents" and "My Pictures" from the C drive to the EHD, then when bringing them back, manually again dragging them back to the PC....sounds like all I have to do is just click "backup" instead of dragging those folders?


3) If my EHD was working, does this mean I could restore everything to another PC? Say I bought a new PC, or was out of town and using a different PC, so long as it had windows (or even Mac), I could either restore and transfer all my files?

Also...how from my EHD if everything is saved under the folder "John's PC" would I be able to locate and access individual documents and files if on another PC?

My one friend has had a strange problem that he asked me to help him out with in which his source code is C++ and confidential because he doesnt want anyone stealing his ideas/software etc, so I cant share the source code, but under one of his test systems the application is crashing.

It is written in MS Visual C++ 2008.

Here is the behavior on his 3 systems he is testing it on. Reason for 3 systems is because he initially tested it on the PENTIUM III 1Ghz and that is when he was having crashes and so he then copied his stand alone application to the Pentium 4 and it ran fine, he dug out an old Pentium II 450Mhz with lesser RAM and processing power to see what would happen also running Windows XP Pro SP3, and it ran slower but didnt crash, so its something up with the Pentium III 1Ghz dell laptop system that is causing the crashes.

Pentium II 450Mhz 256MB RAM XP Pro SP3 OS - Program Runs with No Problems, although kind of slow

Pentium III 1Ghz 640MB RAM XP Pro SP3 OS - Crashes at certain places in the program, always at the same spot in the application.

Pentium 4 1.7Ghz 1GB RAM XP Home SP3 - Program Runs with No Problems and ok pace.

I suggested to him to run memtest86 on it and he did and it passed 4 passes of memtest 86 so the RAM checked out ok. I then said why dont you wipe that system clean and reinstall XP Pro and fully patch it to SP3, so he did that and tested it again and once again it crashed aways at the same places.

I then suggested running other tests on the hardware to test the hardware for problems, so we burned in the 1Ghz Pentium 3 with various stress tests and it HELD up through them. Also did hard drive tests on it to make sure that its not a virtual memory issue with a troubled hard drive. Everything passed hardware wise.

Looked up his ERROR which I didnt write down to share here, but it was one of those would you like to send this error to Microsoft and it was a BEX error with P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6, P7 etc with hex info after some of the P number spots, but on Google it pointed to the issue potentially being caused by (DEP) Data Execution Prevention, and a source at this google hit suggested adding the EXE to a list of programs that are not managed under (DEP), but the problem remains even when rebooting the system.

Since his program is not malicious he went through this process to see if he would have different results, but it still crashed even with DEP set to ignore this EXE.

So I told him that maybe we need to check between the 2 like systems to see what the resource differences there are for .Net etc because all hardware checks are coming out ok. But instead of throwing all sorts of stuff at it such as VC Redist's etc to see if one of them solves this, I thought it would be interesting to see if the problem could be found with some sort of software utility that shows what resources are used for programs, in which maybe there is a system file on this one system that is out of date from the other 2 systems etc or we can copy the dll's from one system to the other until we find the one that patches this issue, or maybe I am off the beaten path and both systems check out as a match.

To share some of what this program does, without giving away his secrets since it is confidential, he programmed up a C++ final project program as part of a college project that he continued to build on from the small project that it first was and he wants to market it someday or sell it off. I told him that he should probably bring it over to a newer IDE such as Visual C++ 2010, but he is working with 2008 for now. He has a mySQL Database that he created from scratch that his application interfaces with, and it keeps track of information gathered etc. Personally I am not sure if what he has is something he can make money on, but all the power to him to try to make money on it. The program is crashing when the form that is populated with data with the C++ visual interface completes the entry and performs its refresh for another entry with the mySQL database. And just this one computer is having issues.

The mySQL database is located on his 4th computer that is acting as a server, so the server is not local to the system running the program. He has also shut off the XP firewall and tried all sorts of stuff thinking trying to shotgun the problem. I told him that the exception for the mySQL port 3306 is plenty, and works on the 2 other systems, so its not the firewall. He also has a newer computer, his Windows 7 system that this program he wrote also runs without any problems and the mySQL database runs flawlessly.

Versus just tossing this Pentium III off to the wayside, he wants to understand why it is crashing because if he knows why, he may be able to perform a bugfix in his code to prevent this from happening to someone else LATER if and when he sells his product. And since all hardware tests seem to check out ok, him and I are looking for a needle in a haystack to find the cause. I tested this program on 3 of my systems running Windows XP Home and Pro all SP3 and they run fine. Also tested it on my one Windows 7 machine and its also running fine when he brought a copy of his mySQL database server to my house on one of his older laptops to connect to my LAN over Static IP Addresses and test it out.

The only other thing I have not tested yet is if its a Network Adapter issue ( driver etc ) since this laptop is connected to the mySQL server over a LAN and the database is not local to the EXE that is interfacing with it, but I have never seen a network issue cause a crash like this before and that is why I expect to find a local resource issue that is causing this with a system file etc. And as far as the NIC goes on this Pentium 3, I have seen it work because we used this same laptop after setting back to dynamic to look up the error message on google with it.

On April 6th, I gave my daughter a new Gateway Laptop for her birthday. She is now 1000 miles away and I am trying to help her solve one problem.

Everything seems to be up and running fine except for Skype. Here are the details.

*She has a Skype account that is running on her old laptop (8 yrs old +).
*The new Gateway already had the Skype icon on the desktop when it was delivered.
*The new Gateway has Norton 360 as its protection SOFTWARE.

She cannot log on to Skype on the Gateway. It won't accept her password and it won't allow her to set a new password. One "techie" she spoke to, told her that the Norton 360 was preventing it, and that he heard of this problem before. Truth or BS?

Any and all suggestions welcome.

I'm trying to put my home movies onto a disk I put them on my computer as a avi file. I'm trying to fix some of the BACKGROUND noise in my movies ,but haven't found a decent tool. Is there some sort of FREE SOFTWARE that may do the trick? Only software I have ever used successfully to edit audio/video is Camtasia, but its not free. If there is a free one out there that works well, I'd be interested in that myself as well as for, i no longer have access to Camtasia, since it was at am EMPLOYER licensed to them, and there have been times that I have wanted to edit video and cant.

Prior to Camtasia I was using Camstudio which is free, but is lacking in editing FEATURES, as well as has issues with some newer audio adapters etc. I was using these software to make training videos etc. Camtasia was so much better.

They have a free trial for 30 days, but not sure if all features are unlocked for that period. Potentially if its unlocked for 30 days and you have a 1 time use for an edit, or a bunch of movies that need editing, i suppose it would be free if you got them all completed before the 30 days are up. http://www.techsmith.com/download/camtasia/ However, its best to buy the software when using it for any large projects and not cheat out the company of revenues.

There are documented problems with later versions of firefox fighting with flash. I found a fix which immediately cured my similar problems.

Go to Windows/sys32/macromedia/flash and modify the mms.cfg file by adding the line "ProtectedMode=0" without quotes

You can see how we can make a formula reference cells in a different sheet by using the sheet name and an exclamation mark, like this =Sheet1!A2

You don't need single quotes around the sheet name if the sheet name has no spaces, but I USE them anyway out of habit.

Looks like its bound to XP I'd find a low cost Windows XP computer or add a removable drive bay and have 1 HDD for XP and the other for Vista. You would need to buy a copy of XP Home or Pro though if you dont already have one to use that is not in use elsewhere. I added a removable HDD to my one system that I run as XP Pro, Linux Mint 14, or WHS as needed. Got a good deal on some IDE/PATA removable drives on clearance through Amazon drop shipped from Cyberguys. Interesting thing was that shipping was cheaper through buying through them on Amazon than it was buying through them directly. They wanted to charge me $13 shipping at their site, yet Amazon was just $7.35 for shipping with these the same price tag.

I bought an Inventory/Invoice program cheap many years ago on EBAY and it only likes Windows 95 or 98, so I run it in a virtual machine environment where it is happy and have a LPT1 redirect to my USB printer. This is a strange request but i need some kind of program that will help me copy only my new files. Currently I have a selection of about 30 folders (with over 9000 files in them collectively) that I put my files into, that are separated by category (each folder is a category). Each time i have new files i put them into the same existing folders. I also copy my folders onto a micro sd card, which takes forever because i have to copy each entire folder again, every time. Because the folders already exist on the sd card, when i shift click no to all it cancels the copying all together. Going though each folder and MANUALLY selecting the new files would take to long, and i would have to figure out which files where new. I just want to be able to select all of the folders and have an option to only copy the new files, and not replacing the ONES that already exist. So are there any programs out there that can help me? Also is there a way to always have the files ordered by date instead of name? Because they are stored on an external hard drive, it reverts BACK to name order every few times i connected it back to my computer.I suggest you try one of the file synchronization programs; I'll MENTION http://allwaysync.com/ but others can be FOUND by doing a search on file sync software. Freeware versions are available for personal use. For commercial use, most software makers require that you purchase a paid version. Allwayssync isn't really working out for me, it keeps telling me my files are questionable and won't sync them. But I'll keep looking.

Every time when I click on print icon in my PDF document (Adobe Acrobat) the dialog box "Save PDF FILE as" comes on on the screen instead of printing. So I still can't print. What's wrong with that? I have never had such a dumb thing before Please, help me.

Hi guys and gals, Got a problem with a game of video poker. I am running windows 7 and this game used to play on it. The basic problem is the poker part of the game runs i.e the cards come up but where as the video part of the game does not on some of the opponents. I have 18 different opponents to choose from. 6 work the other 12 don't. I have tried contacting the games maker and they suggest it could be a codec problem but surely if some of the opponents play it cant be a video codec problem. Is there any way of finding out which codec I have got INSTALLED on my machine? I could re install my windows to start from a recovery disk to take it back to its original settings, but that is my last option. Hope you guys can help.

Reason why I ask is because these types of card games can be installed via DISC or Played through a website, and if its a game played through a website such as a Flash Game etc, you might be looking at just having to UPDATE Flash to newest version etc. However if it is like the old Hoyle Card Game CD game, it is something way different.

Surprised the game MANUFACTURER was not helpful in pointing out what codec their game uses. Most games like this come with their own or use the default windows media player codec's for movie clips. There are "many" codec's out there and not knowing exactly which one means its a guessing game of trial and error trying to fix the right one if the game manufacturer is unable to state which one is used.

I ran into an issue with a codec problem about 8 years ago and it was resolved by reinstalling the OS. My Windows Media player would no longer show the video, the screen would be green and I would have audio. Started with installing latest GeForce FX 5200 DRIVER from nVidia, and that didnt change anything. I then tried replacing codec files in the system without any luck for windows media player. I finally got frustrated and backed up my data and using the system restore CD set, wiped my system clean and set it back to factory defaults which fixed this.I would try by starting to uninstalling the game and than reboot and do a freash install

looking at a used dell that has no hdd, ERGO no o/s. Computer has a m/s coa sticker for vista. How do I go about getting new o/s installed on new hdd? Is it free download from dell or m/s? You will probably find that its cheaper to pay $40 to Dell for the Disc's and whatever the cost of a hard drive is for the capacity that you want vs trying to find a deal 2nd hand. *Sometimes keys on the COA do not work well with other (same Vista) OS Discs! I have some Windows XP CD's that only work with certain keys when trying to use the XP Pro key affixed to the bottom of a laptop against my Windows XP Pro CD which did not come with that laptop but was bought for another system for example. Everything is legal because it all has its rightful key associated with it, but the one XP Pro CD I had rejected the key, so I had to try the other of 5 XP Pro CD's I had to find one that was compatible with the key on the laptop. This required me to reinstall the OS using the 2nd oem disc and it accepted the key of the laptop, while the other CD did not! Would have been probably easier to just pay the $40 for a system recovery set.

A laptop without a hard drive and without the OS to me would be worth around $40, and thats only if the laptop is in good working order other than a HDD missing with OS missing!!! Since I'd be looking at putting $80-$100 into it to make it run again buying hard drive and OS through retail. If you want to go the route of Linux, such as Linux MINT 14.1 KDE, then the OS is FREE and you just need to find a hard drive for the system.

I only value used laptops at around $120 for ones that are CORE 2 Duo or Athlon II CPU or newer, because I know that I can SELL it at $120 and break even if i dont chose to keep it myself. Anything older is limited in application and very few people would want to buy old when for around $300 to $700 they can buy brand new. Laptops older than Core 2 Duo's or Athlon II's to me I generally get for free or very cheap. Usually I gut them for parts to fix the faster computers inexpensively since most are filthy, battered, and keyboards are heavily worn, as well as the batteries are at the end of their life and no longer hold a charge longer than 10 minutes and are $80 to replace etc, so the computers only function if kept on wall power.

I am not aware of any legal iso downloads for any operating systems of Microsoft. Although you would think that they would make it available if all you need is the key really. But if Microsoft made it too easy to reactivate an old OS, they wouldnt be able to sell their new OS, so I look at it as planned obsolescence by making the older OS not readily available for replacement without spending money, and if someone has to spend $40 or more for the original OS, they may want to buy the newer OS instead making Micro$oft richer!!!

A used hard drive is now about $20 here in the USA. SATA 89GB or better.

Also, refurbished PCs with Vista are super cheap.
On eBay a legal Vista DVD is about $15.
Nobody wants Vista.If the COA is still visible all you need is an MS Vista CD that matches what was installed...this is perfectly legal.

many thanksI had a Windows 7 system that acted like this and I fixed it by reinstalling Windows 7. The oddity of this was that the system behaved after selecting Normal Boot, but once again on every boot or restart I'd get this Advanced Boot Options screen, and I never edited this to have DUAL boot etc. Reinstalling Windows 7 as a REPAIR installation fixed this for me. Hi, my grand-father gave me a camera and its a JVC everio GZ-E200. It didn't surprise me to learn when I TRIED to put a VIDEO on my pc that I need Everyo Mediabrowser. When I PLUG my camera on my pc Everyo don't install and I read on internet that it is supose to. I spent hours on internet to find a download link but all links that I FOUND was some update wich need to have everyo mediabrowser already installed Please, if someone can help me I would realy LIKE it.

So, with those two text sources, I want to automatically create this one:
123456,, First text line.
123456,, Second text line.
532456,, Third line.
(...)


I know I could just copy/paste every line from text2 to text1, that's what I'm doing now, but the texts are hundreds or thousands lines long.

???I'm going mildly insane out here! I'm a writer/photographer, which is only important to know because my issue is related to this work. I have recently switched to MS Office 365 and am now using MS Skydrive. I have a 350page document that is ready to be sent out. However - and this is where I'm going nuts - for some unknown reason (unknown to me) MS Word has place the entire document into tracking. I have shut off tracking, I have deselected every tracking option and have tried every other suggestion posted on MS own website for this issue. Nothing works! I can hide the tracking on my own system, but when I copy/paste or simply send the document the tracking reappears and I cannot rid the document of the tracking. Over the course of time, I have moved entire blocks of narrative around the document and have replaced other sections, so there are a ton of tracking marks within the document, so much so that each page is covered with marks in various colors. I have done everything that MS suggests to remove these marks from the document and yet, they remain.

2nd issue connected with the first: for some unknown reason, I am unable to post a QUESTION into MS's own community website in hope of finding an answer to this issue. No matter when I attempt to post, I get this response: "sorry the request cannot be completed, please try again later".

I doubt if this is needed, but I'm working on a laptop running Win 8 and a desktop running Win 7. Hopefully, I've made this understandable - please let me know if I need to add any other INFORMATION. Meanwhile, thanks to anyone who can help save me and my client from this mess!Quote
