i am unable to open PDF files.i have WINDOWS 98.Acrobat READER 5.0 is installed.
any body can tell me the reason why its not opening.

dl65 4.05 works great for me. The newer ones are MUCH more intrusive and resource intensive and don't show PDF documents any BETTER. Maybe other troubles - file association, etc.Foxit Reader from HTTP://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

IMHO a better reader than Adobe.

You should either update to Adobe Reader 7 or, if you prefer a less intrusive PROGRAM with a much smaller footprint, I would go with Dusty and install Foxit.

G'day folks, I have a wlan runing on two lap tops with a desk top on cable from a Dlink 604T router.I was a bit concerned with security WPA seems too complicated.. So I intend to TRY wiflzone. I agree that WPA is rather complex. I am not familiar with wiflzone (sp?), but I have configured a number of wireless networks for WEP security, which is perfectly satisfactory for 99% of home networks.

Basically, you just have to set up the WEP encryption key on the router (using the Router's config application), and configure the laptops to use the same key. The hardest part of this is making sure you type in the hex code properly on the laptops!

Let me know if you WANT help walking through this.

i think i'm the victim of some kind of email repeater sometimes when i send emails there are additional emails being checked that are not in my out box and they don't end up on my sent email folder. my norton shows that my OUTGOING email is being virus checked but there are one more emails than i'm sending.

i am USING xp pro with office xp. email is outlook. norton antivirus doesn't find anything. i've done all the usual things that are recommended, ccleaner adaware virus checker. microsoft antin spyware didn't find anything.

is this common?..is there something in the REGISTRY that i can look for?...

How can I stop Firefiox from popping up the Alert - can't find WEBPAGE message. It freezes everything until I click okay, and it beeps. This does not HAPPEN on my other machines and I have tried to shut off things like alerter in services.msc.

We have a small problem that someone may be able to sesolve... One of our users has recently discovered that outlook is saving copies of all his incoming mail as text FILES in his route directory.

Is this a function/option of outlook?

I BOUGHT a dell laptop 2nd hand, and when i tried to go on the internet i got messages saying, serious malecious error, your data is at risk.
I have just bought norton system works 2006 to try to solve this problem. When i tried to install, it would not WORK, i got a windows error message, the ones where it asks you to send a report.
I tried running some of the tools off the disk, it found many problems and fixed them, when it asked me to reboot, it goes past the windows xp load up screen, then a message saying" autochk.? not found - skipping autocheck" that is one the screen for like 2 seconds and then the COMPUTER goes into sleep or somehing because i have to hold the power BUTTON down for 6seconds then it turns fully off.

Norton gives me the option to use the system goback, i have tried this but its still the same error message then a turn off.

So apart from formatting the C drive again, which i did whe i got the computer, is there a simpler way aorund his, as i have documents and music i really don't want to lose.

Many thanks for all the helpAs a last resort, purchase an 2.5 inch caddy(£8), remove your hd from laptop and install it to the caddy, connect the caddy through usb to another PC that supports usb and retreive all your files that you need.

Once you have done that and you are happy with your files, install your hd back to your laptop and reinstall XP, transfer your file back to laptop in usb memory stick.

That's why the pics are copy protected then!

FUBAR= FU**ED UP BEYOND ALL RECOGNITION

OH man as it turns out, erasing hdd does not magically give system ability to read discs it couldn't have before. now my issues lies w/ commands in dos. stumbled through '/?' to get help, but no avail. am i right in assuming that all those dos commands before windows starts are the same ones executed w/ a start up disc? im having trouble choosing the right variables, is anyone familiar w/ these? please point me in the right direction; i use OPTION 4 safe w/ prompts, then i get conf. w/ all y/n questionsi'm afraid Fed will have to place you in the proper place for this. Any further monkeying around will NOT fix this - not DOS, not magic,....nothing.

I would cut your losses and go for a clean install.thank you all for your help. happy to say that im using my computer this time. i called the manufacturer for a boot disk, they said the one i had was defective, call the store. called the store that i bought it from, told them i need a boot disk, said i should call the manufacturer. bottom line, no help rendered. as it turns out, cleaning the drive via killdisk, and then clean installing windows did the trick. so far, problems are gone, but im WAITING for any virus/worm to rear its HEAD before im totally scot free. wanted to post an update and a THANKS to everyone who does this for free! thanks!Sorted!

Was wondering if anyone of you experts know the solution to this.

In 2003 my computer system completely CRASHED and I had to reformat everything. I had a very large file (outlook.txt) saved which contained all my emails.

When I began anew I migrated to Outlook Express 6. I can't for the life of me figure out how to IMPORT my old emails from a previous version of Outlook, all I have is this text file.

I tried reading the text file in Wordpad, importing it (nothing shows up) and/or CONVERTING it, nothing works.

Would appreciate any help, this is years of information down the drain.did you create the text file yourself with the emails or did you choose to save the emails in a text format?

You can go to File> Import and Export> Import from another program or file> and then select the file type it's saved as.
It's usually .PST format for Outlook or .dbx if its Outlook Express but it really depends on how you saved it first.

got another excel problem - hope this makes sense!

I have a table into which data is entered. one of them is the temperature of water(C5), and the next one is the density of water at that temperature(C6).
What I want to do is as FOLLOWS:
As SOON as the temperature is typed in, I want excel to refer to another table on a different sheet (Column A has temperatures, Column B has density at that temperature), PICK up the temperature that was entered in C5 and look up the required value for that temperature, and then enter that value in the cell mentioned before (C6) :-?

ThanksI think I understand. The function you want to lookup on in excel is called VLOOKUP (if table is vertical) or HLOOKUP (if table is horizontal)

Assuming you have a sheet called "Sheet1" with Column A (Temperatures) and Column (B) Densities
Let's assume that the range of this data is A2:B6..You probably have a bigger list.

Put the function:

=VLOOKUP(C5,Sheet1!A2:B6,2,FALSE)

in cell C6 of the sheet you want to do the lookup on.

The USER types a temperature in C5

Excel will take the item entered in C5 of that sheet and try to find it in the range from A2:B6, if found it will return ther result in the 2nd column of the specified range (in this case the B Column)

OK so here is an update to the problem. It is related to the size of the emails. Anything with more than a few sentences will not send. Is this restriction at our end with some dodgy settings or at the ISP with some crazily low settgins??? Any help gratefully received.

My sisters pc can send and receive plain text emails from her 3 accounts. She can receive HTML emails but can no longer reply to them. She cannot create HTML emails. She is no longer using MSWord as her email editor. I have repaired Office; no joy. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office; no joy. All the updates are installed, SR-3 for office; no joy. The pc used to work fine. Running XP and Office 2000. I have reset the router (she has 2 pc's) and the other pc works fine, which was built using the same software. We have checked the settings for smtp with the isp and there are no problems. She uses Kaspersky AH+AV as do I. Please help.Quote

I am unable to delete messages in my inbox and sent folder in Outlook Express 6. I am on 98SE 256 RAM. This started when I attempted to delete the messages in my sent folder. There were quite a few messages in that folder. It ran for a long time and the HDD was not working. When I closed OE, an error MESSAGE INDICATED "Messages could not be deleted". I rebooted and was able to delete all messages in both the sent folder and inbox. The problem keeps returning and I need to reboot to correct the problem temporarily. Try this to fix OE. Go to Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs. Find Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, select it, and CLICK the Add/Remove button. You SHOUD see a panel with three options. Select the Repair Internet Explorer OPTION and proceed. This repair procedure includes OE.

First of all, regarding my restore point. My IBM computer came with Configsafe, which is a program that allows me to recover my computer to a restore point. I did what you mentioned and repaired IE. I just went into OE and was deleting messages in my inbox. Then I attempted to delete messages in my sent folder and I couldn't. I then went back to my inbox and couldn't delete messages there either. If I reboot the problem is corrected. I know, just reboot if I want to delete my messages. That's fine but it doesn't fix the problem.

Hi and I'll start with stating that this sounds like a dumb QUESTION - I know . I currently have Windows XP home with Office XP Student & Teachers Editions loaded as well as Access 2003. I have a full-blown version of Office 2003 Pro that I want to install, but I'm unsure if I should uninstall Office XP and Access 2003 before INSTALLING Office 2003 or after.

The MAIN reason I ask is that our ISP is rather squirrelly and I am scared if I uninstall XP first, I will lose all of my emails as well as the second email address that it took them 3 painful hours to help create. I am planning on backing Office up prior to install regardless, but I'm not sure which Outlook files actually contain the mail.

BenI would say uninstall. SOmetimes MS products require the original CD of the office product to uninstall. Not sure about that version.That was my thought too. I have the installation CDs so shouldn't be too big a deal - other than time.

I have Windows 98 SE copied to a CD, but I cannot boot my computer with it ( when there is a booting problem, or when my boot floppy is damaged).

Generally I prefer it handy to be able to boot from a CD because floppies are vulnerable to be damaged.

The people who installed my sound card did not install it properly or failed to install the proper hardware. I have tried to PLAY windows media movies but I get no sound, and when I GO to control panel and try to play sounds I cannot play them; plus, there is no volume level ICON on my start menu.

Is there anyway besides GOING back (to the people who failed so badly with fixing my computer up when it was broken; since they failed to put in the right sound software), that I can make my sound card work properly?

I am not a computery person who likes fiddling with parts or is extremely knowledgable about software. I would prefer if someone could tell me how to fix it quickly and efficiently or if someone could give me a link to where I can download the software (preferably not an hours-long download).

I would be very grateful if someone could assist me with this sound problem on my computer. PLEASE help, I need my sound to work!

Has ANYONE here ever run across any software that shows the Reg. keys & such for any given program installed on a computer? Something like Process Explorer, but that shows ALL Reg. entries linked to a particular process. I've used various Reg. Cleaners, & some do a good job,..but they don't remove every single key or value installed. For an example...I was setting up a computer given to us for my wife. I was removing programs she didn't or wouldn't use. I removed AOL that the previous owner had & spent over an hour going through the reg. removing all traces of it. The search feature of the regedit leaves a lot to be desired. I habitually go THRU the reg to remove junk & am just trying to find something to speed up the process.

Oh, & for the record, I do use Windows Reg. Repair..& RegScrubXP on my computer. My wife has 98SEon hers but I installed the Reg.Repair on hers. These are the two FREE better ones I personally like, but they leave things behind too!nope... I can't say I've heard of a program that will list everything you DESIRE... But perhaps if you are seeking to remove one particular program... You can sometimes find a GOOGLE search of what entries that particular program loads and how to remove it. Sorry if I couldn't help with this one.. :-/[highlight]CCleaner[/highlight] is a pretty good registry cleaner whilst remaining pretty safe to use. Try that first.

Resplendence produce excellent registry tools and a lite version of the Registrar Registry Manager is available [highlight]here[/highlight].

[highlight]Macecraft[/highlight] also offer some excellent registry tools as free and functional but time limited trials.

I've used CCleaner before, the others listed I'll check out. I LEARNED a long time ago about backing up!!! The Hard Way!! But HEY...gotta learn somehow. Thats how I've become proficient at re-installing programs! Well that way & letting my squirrel poke around when I've got the cover off the tower!!

A program is trying to access e-mail addresses ...

This is either virus/spyware trying to hack into your addresses or you have installed some version of ActiveSync or similar mobile phone software that is trying to sync with your system.

I have had a similar problem with AVG and the email scanner BECOMING a bit fubar because of spyware.

Run a full system scan, if you FIND nothing nothing just try deleting the ACCOUNT and setting it up again.

If you are using Outlook then you can go to Tools> Email Accounts> View existing email accounts> Highlight the account and click change> then Test Account settings - if it fails to complete all tests then something has CHANGED your username and/or password.

Delete and set up account again.Thanks. I haven't tried to sync anything new, and the full Norton scan turned up nothing. I'll try re-establishing the account.

Matter of extreme urgency -- finals week, and I now have no internet access...very detrimental to end-of-quarter success.

I've had a Sygate Personal Firewall installed on my machine for several months now. I had never had any problems with it, but with my other problems lately (monitor or video card is dying, unsure which), I've had to restart the machine more than usual. When I restarted this morning, it came back on just fine, but I was denied access to the internet. I checked my wireless connection and it was fine. I did notice, though...that my firewall's icon in the lower right-hand corner was not on. It usually asks me several questions at startup, and the icon is always there. No questions asked, no icon. I've had this problem before with other free firewalls -- they work fine for a few months, then when they die (for reasons unknown to me...) they block everything access to the internet. Usually, I can just uninstall the firewall and everything is back to normal.

The Sygate firewall will not uninstall. When I go into the 'Add/Remove Programs' window, and click "Remove", it tells me my WINDOWS Installer is not installed on the machine, and therefore, it cannot remove the program. I can't even turn the firewall off, because the machine says it isn't on. I'm panicking. Right now, I'm on a campus computer, and it will be difficult to fix this without an internet connection (currently writing post from campus computer). You all have helped me out SO much in the past, and I'm very grateful. If you can give me directions on how to remove Sygate from my machine (or tell me if it's been hijacked/attacked by a virus), I will love you forever!

I have a Dell Dimension 2650 or something like that, run Windows XP, and the computer is 3 years old. The only programs I ever allow to access the internet are Firefox, IE (until I got Firefox), AIM, and Eudora.

Please, the quicker you can help me, the better. I'll even offer to bake cookies and send them!

If you can, please go here to download HijackThis, do a scan, then put the log it creates (it's a text file) on a diskette/cd and put that in the campus computer, and post the log. It may span several posts, but that doesn't matter. That log will let us know if there's a hijacker.

If you've done this before, my apologies; I have to assume you haven't. Can't get back to my computer tonight. I did run HijackThis before I left, though. I only remember three or four things popping up in the log.

IDriverT.exe is safe btw.Well.. since you said you had problems with Windows installer.. you might try this:

1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt.

2. Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter.

3. Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter

well what was the fix?That is most certainly not a full logfile! How I wish they were that small!

Can anyone help, Adobe does not seem to have as much info on their site as I need. I have Acrobat Sdt 6 and want to upgrade to a Prof version. Professionl 6 WOULD be fine but I SEE a product listed on some sites as an upgrade to Prof 7. It is CHEAPER than the Prof 6, what I need to know for sure is if it will update my Std 6 to the Prof 7. Only Adobe knows this ONE. See if you can call a human on the PHONE if the website is not clear on this.

Everytime I launch OUTLOOK and hit send/receive the progress box tells me emails are being sent even though none are in my outbox and after the sending (sometimes more than one) nothing appears in the sent box. They are small because they don't take long to send but is there a problem or is this just the program sending request to server? What version of Outlook are you running?Well, send/recive doesn't automatically operate at launch. I still click on the send receive button to actually get emails sent and to check if I have emails. But when I am checking to see if I have emails the first thing I see in the progress box is that at least one and often more are being sent. But I haven't generqated any emails and none are waiting to be sent in the outbox. When I try to check what was sent the sent box has nothing later then the last one I sent several days ago. This happens every time I check mail. Dunno what version but I don't use outlook express as prefer to use older version HOPEFULLY less likely to be attacked than if I was usig express as less PEOPLE use it ... hope this makes sense.It sounds LIKE the normal Send / Receive function... It will tell you that it has two tasks while the progress bar moves along and communicates with the server. I don't think there's anything to worry about.

hi, I've just installed DVD encryptor and ripped one of my films to my hardrive. The extension has come up as a .vob file and I can't get anything to play it. Can someone tell me if it's possible to change it to an .avi file?

Im having trouble with windows media player. I cannot access the library and it wont update CD info (names/art etc) even when i search for it while ripping CDs. When i click on the library it just fails to go to the PAGE, there is no message or anything
Ive tried rolling back and reinstalling but it DIDNT help

McAfee is a good virus scan BETTER then NORTON nowadays. By the way is the subscriptiion STILL valid? If it is EXPIRE better keep AVG then As they are installed already and difficult to remove, keep the McAfee Anti-Virus and Firewall only.

When McAfee EXPIRES do a clean install and use AVG free and a firewall of your choice. (Using a router is better they tell me.)

I installed MICROSOFT MONEY 2001 on one of four accounts. However i do not SEEM to be able to access it when on any of the other three accounts. i presumed that if i installed it on ACCOUNT 1, it would be accessable on account 2, 3 and 4, but seemingly not! is there anything stopping me accessing money 2001 on the other three accounts?

my son ran the "detect and repair" option and we now have lost everything and need to configure a new email setup, is there any way to restore our previous set up including all old emails etc? I find it hard to believe it has DELETED everything.
I tried restoring "my PC to a previous time" but the only option was when this happened.

cheers Well... If System Restore has not worked, I doubt anything will... However, there is still hope... Who is your E-Mail provider? SOMETIMES they set it so that EVEN though you read/delete e-mails in Outlook, they still save the message(s) on thier server... Contact them.

So my most current itunes has really PISSED me off; its re-creating playlists and moving files on its own even when I put the music files back the way I had them itunes moves them again, even creating new folders and moving 1 song into it!

My pc is built for sound so I'm wondering whats the greatest sounding music player out there? I dont have an ipod so I'm done with itunes They all "Sound" the same, Sure the GUI on them all will be different but so is everybody's preferences.

I use Itunes only for putting music on my ipod.

For playing music thought my headphones i use Windows Media player.

I am running Windows XP, SP2 and have MICROSOFT Office XP, SP3. I've never used Outlook, but want to use it to synchronize with my new Dell Axim. I uninstalled the Outlook version that had been included with my XP package but which was never set up to use, then used the disk provided with the Axim to install Outlook 2002.

When I open Outlook, I get the following message (much like one discussed in this forum for Outlook 2000, but the FIX in that case did not WORK for me).

"Unable to open your default e-mail FOLDERS. The .DLL file for the information service could not be found. MAPI was unable to load the information service PSTPRX.DLL.
Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured."

When I click on OK, I get another choice: "Would you like to open your default File System folder instead." Clicking No causes the program to close. Yes opens the "My Computer" folder in the Outlook window. After a bit, I get the same message as before, except for the first sentence, which now is "Unable to start processing services."

The fix recommended for Outlook 2000 took the user through regedit to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\Setup to insert a value for MailSupport.
If I go to the corresponding folder for 10.0, there is no MailSupport.

I like Outlook but I have not been ABLE to send attachments with it. I have sent emails to myself with an attacment and it works fine but when I send them to my colleage he gets the email without the ATTACHMENT. I know that there is some security with Outlook that is not in OE but this is rediculous. What am I doing wrong??It may well be your FRIEND's problem & not your's.

Basically, iirc, unless the files are Windows compatible - ie they play in a bog standard Windows Media Player with no external codecs, Movie Player won't be able to use them.

I'm trying to create a template to use as stationary incorporating TEXT and an image.
Every time I create the image then apply it with the text using stationary picker the image just shows the border and a red cross.

What type of image do I need to use and what PROPERTIES can it have?
How do I INCORPORATE it into the stationary? Does it need to be 'imbedded', if so how?

I have FOLLOWED the instructions but it doesn't work.
Can someone please give me a step by step SET of instructions.

I TRIED uninstalling a program from my computer today but for some reason it's still on there. I uninstalled it from Control Panel => Install/uninstall programs. The program is FlyakiteOSX.

The uninstall process works fine but at the end of it I get a message saying some parts could not be uninstalled. What should I do?

As for what's left of the program installation, search for it on your hard drive(s) and delete it.Thanks Backdated, I managed to get rid of all the files pertaining to that program. And yes, it was indeed a poorly written program. That's partly the reason why I got rid of it.

Ending / altering recurring appointments In Outlook 2000

When i try to end or alter recurring appointments, i get a message "all EXCEPTIONS will be lost". I don't WANT that to happen, as i want a record of exceptions to refer back to, i don't want my history to be altered. does anyone know a way around this?

JonnyInstead of choosing no end to the reccurence you can select to end it after a certain number of times or by a date that will keep the previous records still in your calender.Correct. But if you then alter the series end date at any point or change the appointment time, you lose any exceptions. For example, set up an appointment to recur ten times. Cancel one appointment in the series. Then change the recurrence to 11 times, and the cancelled appointment will pop back again. Frustrating!Are you choosing to open the one occurrence or the series?
opening the single occurrence and deleting or changing it and then changing the recurrences AFTER that date should keep those changes without it popping back again?That's what i do do. Change one occurence, then open the series after that event, change the series in any way, and lose the change to the earlier event. May be it's a bug. Not just me, but a colleague has the same problem.
Can anyone else try it?If I am getting it right, you are changing the occurrence in a 'series', then changing the series again. As all of the occurrence's are part of that series then you are changing the whole series and so will have them all altered.

If you only want to change one occurrence then you would have to make it a stand alone event and not part a series.Even changing the series by giving it an end date after having "no end date", I lose the exceptions MADE earlier - e.g. one appointments in the series that i deleted pops back.Is it correct therefore that you cannot alter a series without losing any exceptions, even changing the end date? that means that say you set up a Tuesday meeting at 9.00, cancelling every now and then and deleting single instances of the series, that when the timeslot for the meeting changes to 9.30, all exceptions i.e. cancellations are altered? So when you look back in your diary, they have all switched to 9.30? And even putting in an end date for the 9.00 meeting so as to start a new series with the 9.30 start time will count as altering the series and all exceptions to the original start time will be lost?
Am i getting something wrong?

You are changing an occurrence of a series, hence you have chosen the 'series'. If you choose that occurrence alone then only that part of the series is changed.

It means that if i set up a series, say, to see a patient every week at the same time (i'm a psychologist), but they or I cancel sometimes, when we decide to terminate treatment, the cancelled sessions I deleted are re-instated. so when i go back over the previous appointments the record is incorrect.

The only solution SEEMS to put in each appointment individually.

i thought computers were supposed to be good at this sort of thing. Why are exceptions all lost when they are in the past?

I have searched for answers to this query but cannot find any. Sorry if there is something Ive missed.

I have an issue with outlook where each email I reply to or forward when Im typing my reply
the first character of each line turns to a capital letter whenever I return to the next line or have a
space in the line or enter some punctuation.
E.g I type a line of lowercase letters then enter a space or a comma or go to the next line for the
next sentence & the first character changes to uppercase.
When I do new emails its fine only seems to be replies & forwarding.
I have TRIED lots of options to see if it CHANGED but have not been able to find the right one which Im
sure exists. I thought it was simply choosing not to use word as email editor but that doesnt seem to help.

Im using version 2003 (11.6359.6408) SP1 part of MS Office Pro 2003.
Im on a corporate network & my collegues are fine & dont have this issue.

Hope thats all the info required & that someone can help me with this.

Start up a new email. Type anything in the body of the message. Go to tools-->Autocorrect options. Uncheck "Capitalize (sic) first letter of sentences". Job done.There is no autocorrect options in my tools menu.
But thankyou since you told me what it was called I searched the help & found it & all fixed.
