dl65 AIM is just buggy. I had a problem where it randomly froze. Try Trillion as your new IM client. Try a less recent version of AIM?

can some one tell me why my bt dial-up WONT disconnect
When i turn it on and its left on for a couple of hours or all day
and when its time to turn it off or disconnect it never goes AWAY like
the other programs do and it makes shuting down a pain in the *censored*

Do you right click on the TASKBAR icon & choose disconnect?I KNOW this probably isn't the issue, but you didn't stick the phone jack in the Ethernet Port, did you? I've seen it happen lol

FlameI had the same problem... I think its the only way to disconnect the internet is just unplug the phoneline from the back of the computer... It works...Yes i right click it in the task bar then its like it stops responding the little light at the front of computer lights up for awhile then stops and nothing happens then i try the icon and that doesn't work neither --its PLUGGED in to the usb slot ---i've tryed keeping it connected for half an hour then turn it off and it works but not when i leave it on for long times

How do I transfer data from my disks to my new "memory stick". I'm told that using a disk to download data is "older technology". So now I have a new computer with a memory stick. How do I transfer data on my disks to the new memory stick feature. I just bought a USB External FLOPPY Disk unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.leftee....I wouldnt think it to be too difficult .......
First ..install the memory stick......
Installing a memory stick

The USB port will be located either in front of the computer or behind it. If the port is in BACK of the computer, you need to look for the USB symbol.

Look at the plug end of the flash drive before you plug it into the port. You want to make sure you plug it in the correct side. Once you have plugged the flash drive in, a pop up window will appear SAYING “Found new hardware disk drive.”

then......Saving a file to a USB memory stick

Click File and SAVE. At the drop down "save in" menu, look for and select the Removable Drive (It might be “E”, “F”, “G” or some other drive.). This is where you want to save your work.

then..... You must follow this procedure before removing the memory stick:

Look for an icon with a green arrow on the bottom right hand section of the computer screen. If you move your mouse over this icon, it will say “Unplug or eject hardware.” Double right click on this icon. You will get a screen that says “Unplug or Eject Hardware.” Select the device you want to unplug, and click stop. If you see a submenu, select the brand name of your storage device. Once you have SELECTED the device and clicked ok, you will get a message stating, “The USB Mass Storage Device can now be safely removed from the system.” Now you can unplug the device.

apparently she's missing a lot of drivers. But specifically for her video card and display.

She said she has only one of two backup discs. She's missing the second.

It will tell you exactly what the devices are and then it is a simple task to get them from the net.I think that this might help... I had the same problems... :-?I'm afraid this might be too much of a bonehead question but here you go: I need to load new software for my new digital camera and I never know how to be sure all open and running software is closed, as the directions always ADVISE. I have three icons in my tray: task SCHEDULER, volume & norton antivirus. I know I need to close the norton anti, but what about the other two?...Are they considered open and running software? And if so, how do I close them? I have an older computer with win 98. Also, I thought crtl-alt-del showed me running software. Is this so? Thank you for taking time to HELP a bonehead user.You will be right if you stop Norton Virus.Generally, the PROMPTING to close all open programs means any programs you have started from your Programs menu and that appear on your taskbar. For example, if you have Word and EXCEL open, you would have an icon for each of them on your taskbar. And, yes, these would appear in the Task Manager panel that appears when you hit Ctrl/Alt/Del, along with those programs represented by icons in the system tray (where you see the Norton anti-virus icon).

Closing programs that appear in the tray area, such as Norton Anti-Virus is also a good idea. Anti-virus software, in particular, can sometimes interfere with software installation.

I am having a problem that is a bit of an annoyance.
I accidently erased some rather important information from a floppy deisk and i need to reteive it. How would i go about that?
GratsiGone. Sorry.If you have access to true MS-Dos (not the "Dos" in NT) you could try the Undelete utility. Just tried it to confirm using Win 98se and no problem undeleting files deleted using Dos or Win.

Absolutely no problems here with Undelete on a floppy.

Used it with standalone MS-Dos 6.22 and 7.1 and in the Win.98se Dos window (Undelete gives the option to close Windows, runs the undelete process then warm re-boots). The only thing you have to know is the first letter of the FILENAME which is to be Undeleted as that's the letter which is changed to a symbol when the file is deleted. If a different letter is used the file is Undeleted with that letter as first character of the filename and might cause some confusion especially with .exe files not being found.But that way would only work with 98... Why don't they have an undelete utility with XP ...
So, if you ARNT running with 98. You've lost your data.Hi Spedz. YEP, you're possibly right but even now lotsa folks are still running Win.98 & it's probably easy to get someone in a PC club or organisation to ASSIST. Help is usually not too far away.

Undelete.exe is available for free download. Maybe it's possible to add it to a bootdisk, boot from that disk and then Undelete B: - not tried that but will do soon.

Can now advise that the MS-Dos 6.22 bootdisk downloaded from here contains Undelete.exe and that it does indeed work perfectly.

The steps to follow are:
(1) download the file to your hard disk.
(2) insert a formatted floppy in the APPROPRIATE drive
(3) click on the file you downloaded to your hard disk. This will create the actual bootdisk on drive A:
(4) reboot with the bootdisk in A: This should boot into Dos
(5) at the A: prompt type UNDELETE B: and hit Enter you will be prompted to enter a disk in drive B: which as you will know is the other drive letter for A:

After inserting the disk you want to undelete just follow the prompts, re-inserting the bootdisk when prompted to do so.

When you have returned to the A: prompt remove the bootdisk and use Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot into Windows.

All should not be lost....

I've just taken over management of a small real estate agency. Due to it being so in the dumps, we are doing a complete overhaul of all the systems and one of the things I would like to get done first and done right is our communications. For now, I'm trying to FIGURE out a way to use Outlook not only for external and internal messaging, but I also need some form of sending other workers tasks to do and being notified when they have finished the tasks. I need it done in a way so that a record of me sending the task and a record of them entering in the system that they have completed the task is created and stored. Now if this could all be done through outlook that would be great but I'm basically just looking for your ideas. Throw them at me, if there is a better piece of software to use let me know. HOPE to hear from you,
Thanks in advance.I'd bet what you want to do can be done with Outlook, but I think you're really asking about ADVANCED techniques and expecting to much from a forum as a source of DETAILED instruction on this. I think you will need to make a serious commitment to studying a book or video on Outlook, and possibly getting some FORMAL training on it and/or paying a consultant to help you set this up.

I'm having some difficulty view some custom built Outlook forms. I believe the original form was built using Outlook 2000 and now I'm using Outlook 2003. When the form is sent to other people it appears as a seperate tab in their email...My computer doesn't show one.

Understanding Form Limitations
Some of the sample forms you may find are designed to facilitate
interaction among people in the same organization. You NEED Microsoft
Exchange Server to use any forms that are designed to work in Public
Folders or with Outlook group scheduling. However, this doesn’t mean that

Print one at a time works FINE? Then do that. Check your settings in Outlook and compare them with his. It sounds like Outlook is causing this.since all the pc's here are made from the same GHOST image, i'm not expecting to find any differences, but i will compare the settings to double-check.

as for printing one at a time, sometimes this person gets 30-40 emails and would rather select-all and print once than have to sit there and print them individually. plus it saves on PAPER because it doesn't 'form feed' between each one.all of the settings APPEAR to be same.

I need to be able to relate the number of points based on finishing position. For INSTANCE:

=if (a2=1,"10", if (a2=2,"9")) etc.

The problem is that I can only nest up to seven IF functions in Excel, and I need to do 11. Any IDEAS for a NEWBIE???

If your copy of Windows XP is legal, you own that copy in perpetuity (forever). As long as it is on one machine, you can use it, move it and update it legally.

Also as above, you may need to reauthenticate/reactivate the software with MS if you CHANGE machines or hardware, otherwise you can experience problems (updates, operation, etc.).

The above applies to OEM/retail versions of their software, whether preloaded or not. Other license schemes, business versions, etc. may be different.

AJ......... If the mail is addressed to you than why not let the read receipt be sent ........ But to answer your question ......yes I believe there is a way to do that........ I am just a bit reluctant to show you how to do it .


dl65 It's just about gaining me time; I get inundated with e-mails at work which are frequently followed by immediate phone calls when I open a mail with 'Read Receipt'.

All I'd like to do is have some time to digest the mail, then send the receipt. How about USING the preview pane so you can see it before you OFFICIALLY "read" it?AJ.... In that case ...you might try the following ........ In Outlook .......hilight the un-opened Email ( dont open it as that triggers the auto send receipt) ......then right click on the un-opened Email and select properties ......when the properties box opens .....click the details tab ....and then click message source ......now you can view the text portion of the Email without opening it or sending a receipt .

If you mean the 'Reading Pane', I've tried that and the second you higlight an un-read mail it sends a 'Read Receipt'AJ.....OOOps sorry about that .......right church wrong pew.........Try this open Outlook..... click tools/options /Email options/tracking options ....then check ......never send a receipt .

dl65 Well I don't think our internal e-mail (employee to employee) is routed via the Internet or the whole firm (many offices across the country) would be dependant on the Internet link.

I think that if your NAME is in the Exchange/Outlook address book it routes it over the internal WAN, if your name isn't in the address book it routes it to the Internet.

I think the ‘Use this option to decide how to respond to requests for read receipts. Only applies to Internet Mail accounts’ in Outlook 2003 may be designed to stop you inadvertently returning a receipt to spammers , thereby confirming that your mail address is valid.

I'll do some testing at work that's the only way to be sure that these ideas work, thanks for all your help folks.

Thanks for any help".wax" is not an audio format per se. It is a metafile that points towards the actual file (WMA) and location (redirector).

Many sites use metafiles to protect their content or prevent piracy. Don't be surprised if the file is USELESS or unreadable.

You can try opening the file in NOTEPAD or other text editor and see if you can get the actual file name and location.

Home MADE 64 bit, 2 gigs of RAM, 1.8 GHZ PROCESSOR, 250G HD. INSTALLED Win XP Home and for some reason, It shows that 108G of 250G was used for the installation. Now, we all know that XP does not use 108G for installation. Any idea what I am doing wrong, and how it could be corrected?

Whenever I try to launch windows MEDIA player I get a MESSAGE stating an internal application error has occured. I've tried to reinstall media player several times but I still get the same message. Now you read this and might SAY, "Where's the firewall" or "Where's the ACTUAL stuff?" Well, it just so happens that I run Windows 98 with 64 RAM and a 533Mhz Intel Celeron Processor. So that kinda limits my capabilities to use certain programs, or multiple programs at once. Now these are just programs that I've bothered to use, and have to say, they're amazing. Firewalls just haven't been good for me, and personally, I've never needed one. I just "LAYER" my defences. Running AVG for viruses, Ad-Aware for spyware, A-squared for trojans, dialers and worms, and bazooka to find the rest. I also keep Anti-Vir, Avast!, and spybot INSTALLERS, and every now and then, install them, update, scan, and then uninstall.

I usually transport data from one PC to another via CD's. But what if my file is BIGGER than the CD' capacity, lets say, 1GB? The only way will be file splitter?..or use a DVD?WinZip, WinRaR archivers and many others feature SPLIT ARCHIVING facilities. OTHERWISE, try a google for a program called FileSplit.

My computer is an old Packard Bell (so old that most of the labels have been rubbed out)

When I tried a *whatever* named DET-CD/Query one of the outputs was:

This is likely the CD drive, right?

So, from the dos prompt I am given, how do I make it recognize the CD drive?Has the SYSTEM given any INFORMATION tht MCDEX had been loaded?
Leave a cd in the drive and type in the drive letter with a : after it. e.g. D: - then press enter.

If you get 'not ready reading drive X:' (X being your drive) then its most likely your drive. If it gives you the drive (you'll been in the root of your drive) type in DIR. It should LIST the files that are on the disc.Travel to bootdisk.com and DLoad a Win95 Custom bootdisk...
Extract the file to a CLEAN floppy and use it to start the Packard Bell. Make sure in the opening screen you select "Start machine with CDRom support.
After it finishes booting put a CD in the drive.At the A: prompt type D: and hit enter. At the D: prompt type dir /p.
If this shows the contents of the CD then the drive is not faulty. You will have to DLoad and re-install the CDRom DRIVERS for Win95.

i have a big problem i got a very very old 3M projector http://www.projectorcentral.com/3M-MP8610.htm and i'd like to MOUNT this to the ceiling. the only problem is that this projector does not support the well known trapezoid correction... by the way i have to CLEAN it FIRST and i also have to change the lamp. but i wont do it until i cannot solve the first problem

My auto-complete feature is not working in Outlook 2000. Any suggestions/fixes/ETC?

- does your problem apply to all auto-complete stuff or to just a select few addresses/types?
- do/did you scan for possible virus/malware? If so, what did you use and the results?

I'm not sure if it did work before. I just started using this PC and aparently the person using it before me was using Outlook EXPRESS and was able to auto-complete on that.

One way to solve your problem would be to try each one until it's fixed.

The preferred way would be for you to tell us what you are using and how you are using it (PC model#, OPERATING system, recent changes/problems) and a better description of "not working."

Is the feature turned on (in Outlook, not Outlook Express)?

Does the problem exist in all auto complete actions or just a few (addresses)?

Have you scanned for possible virus/malware? If so, what were the results and what did you use?

If you don't understand any of the above questions or don't know how to get the info, let us know and we'll help.

I have the feeling that auto-complete is not turned on in Outlook, but that's a wild guess based on lack of information.

The auto-complete feature IS turned on in Outlook, not just Outlook Express. (Tools-Options-Email Options-Advanced Options-Auto Name Checking)

I'm running XP on a no-name PC. When I say it "doesn't work" I mean that when I type in a name it should recognize, it doesn't complete the name/address. I've tried this with names, and nicknames in my contact list and with addresses that I have previously sent emails to.

It seems I have all the screensavers from before on Win XP, but I can't for the life of me FIND the 3D maze. Is that even in XP? I know this is a bit out of date, but so am I. I'm TRYING to change the default parameters on the document you receive when you boot up Word 97. DOC1 is the name, but changing that does nothing to affect the default settings.

Anyone know this answer?


ThanksI wish I could understand the problem...More details please...OK - when you boot up MS Word you get a blank sheet of paper. The paper is formatted, font, margins, etc. I want to change those parameters instead of having to manually change them every time I want to begin a new document.

The name of this blank document is doc1 but changing that makes no difference for when you run it again, you are back to the old settings.

How to change it permanently?


Choose Stlye and Formating...(7-th from above in drop down menu) from Format(5-th from left) menu. On the right of your page so CALLED pane will be opened. Choose CREATE Style from there and give your preferred parameters to that style. Give it name and check two boxes at the bottom of your page.Click ok.
When you open Word you'll have again default style and all you need to do is choose your own style from drop down list and you'll get your parameters..

ps: there may be some name errors above , i transalte it from another language. I have Office in Not english so i wrote places in numbers If you want the new blank document to load as you set everytime it starts, create a template for your purpose.
TYPE "template" in Help and you'll get the answer.Or try this way:

The settings and the blank document are all based on a special template, called "Normal.dot". You will find that in (usually) C:\Program files\Microsoft Office\Templates. Or it may be in your Windows profile: C:Windows\Profiles\your name\Application Data\Microsoft... etc. If you can't find it, just do a search for "Normal.dot" in Explorer.

Once you've found it, you can open it in Word. Don't double-click it - that will simply create a new document based on the template. To change the template itself, either use the File->Open menu option in Word (choose Document Templates from the "files of type" dropdown) or find the file in Windows Explorer, right-click it and choose Open (rather than New).

Make any changes you like to the Normal.dot template and then save it. You're done.

I have items, such as business cards, that are no longer
READABLE as plain text. Instead, they appear as 8-dot

When I start my computer, I get a message that says "Devices or applications disabled. CD Recording Software will cause Windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented these drivers from loading." Now, other than the obvious question, "What can I do to fix this?", my other concern is will this affect the DVD writer itself. ie: cause it to not turn on or work at all.

Here is some information:

My Computer is an HP
My DVD writer is an Optorite external
the dvd writer green LIGHT in the BACK comes on when plugged into computer but nothing else when plugged into power supply
I am running Windows XP home edition

I appreciate the help.One thing you can try...Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and find the DVDRom. Right click it and select remove. This will give you an error message ignore it and choose yes.
Upon re-boot WinXP will automatically re-install the DVD drive and install the drivers for it.

dl65 If by "page" you mean "printed page", it's all in the printer settings. You can manually insert page breaks (i.e. hive off a section of each sheet for printing) or let Excel automatically choose page breaks.

Have been given formula for calculating number of people befor more than 50% probability of two with same birthday. WISH to claclulate table of answers in excel. Uses functions Factorial (FACT) and to the power of (Power). Can not enter 'FACT(365)' into ecxel, probably too large a number.

Only scanners that scan files when they are extracted, altered or scan in real time should be disabled when installing patches, drivers and any other type of update.AVG Resident Shield runs in realtime but I'd be very surprised if it interfered with the installation of your game. Norton, another matter.Resident Shield and the ACTIVE e-mail scan also rely on certain Windows services...depending on what services this game needs/uses this might become an install issue just because Gates is Gates.Resident Shield doesn't seem to do much at all if you're using Windows XP. Apart from complain when not being installed.

Can't get the E-mail scanner to work with Gmail and Thunderbird.Raptor if you are using AVG and TBird the default settings in the e-mail scanner are by default not set up PROPERLY...why AVG does this i don't know.
Open AVG Control Center, clik on e-mail scanner and select Properties. Set the pop3 and smtp settings to those in TBird and you should be good to go.
For example my pop3 setting is port 110 : AVG default at first was 10110.
Again i don't know why this is but it worked for me.
You can also set up your GMail acct in TBird. Use the default pop3 ( incoming ) server for that acct. and set the outgoing to GMail's specs which are LISTED on your GMail page.

It simply seems to stall and never let through the E-mail when it attempts to scan the incoming E-mail (TTL 995, I believe) port. I haven't tried for quite a while, though.

Are you saying you got it to work? What other settings did you change?All i had to change in mine was the correct POP3 and SMTP ports. Is TBird the only e-mail client you are running currently ?Yes. With Gmail. Which doesn't use the default ports, it uses TTL.

when i play a movie on vlc media PLAYER it works fine but when i play it using either creative media player or nero the sound does'nt work, if it s a problem with the audio file, can some one tell me a free way to convert it to one that works.I am assuming you are playing with a DVD. Two people share a computer, both use Outlook, one can can read the other person's e-mail without knowing the password. The Password box comes up but you can see the inbox behind it and who has SENT e-mails along with SUBJECTS. You can double-click on the e-mail and read it. This is the weirdest problem, and I'll be amazed if anyone can offer a solution, but hoping you all like a challenge...

Office 2003 is installed on a friend's ThinkPad (XP + all the updates). Everything functions correctly, but in Outlook all the titles of the mandatory folders (Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, Tasks etc.) show as "", "[ch61489][ch61489][ch61489][ch61489]" or similar. Because they are integral folders they can't be renamed. I've tried re-installing Office, repairing, removing completely then deleting all the folders and the registry entries and installing, all without success.

The ThinkPad’s version of XP was originally in Japanese but was repaired by IBM in the UK who seem to have installed English XP over the top of the old system. I've run a repair installation of XP (English) which solved loads of problems that the IBM action caused, but nothing will correct Outlook.

I'm assuming that Outlook is using a corrupt font, although why it only affects some folders is beyond me, but I can't locate it and changing all the font selections in Outlook has no effect.

Any suggestions, even if they are wild guesses, appreciated.

Dang, you definetly have a ton on your hands.

O.K., the outlook you are using is obviously corrupted, not a font issue, just a software issue. My suggestion would be to get another one.kro.......Well given that there was ( is ) a Japanese version ....which has been overwritten with the english version and then that version repaired ....... It would seem that the BEST fix would be a clean install of Xp ...... or is Outlook part of the office package ......in which case ....simply delete Outlook and reinstall Outlook again ...using the custom install feature in XP office .........

Dl65 - I agree that a full, clean installation of XP Pro seems the most likely solution, but I'm, starting to regard this problem as a personal afront.

Somewhere within the Thinkpad is something that causes some, not all, of the FOLDER titles to be SHOWN as gibberish. Either correcting that or finding a way to overwite the folder names manually must be possible (SURELY).

Eventiually you may be able to hammer out a solution, but in the meantime a nice format and clean install could have been completed and you could be working away happily! GX1 Man

I fully UNDERSTAND your sentiment, but the ThinkPad is my girlfriend's and she is happy to use Outlook Express or Mozilla Thinderbird, but as I've said I've come to regard this as my own personal Everest. I can't figure out why it's happens or why it's impossible to correct it.

I have been using PSP 8 for some time now for scrapbooking edits on my digital photos. I have always been able to figure out how to do what I want but this is a BIG problem for me. I want to make a photo collage. I have read the instructions. Tried it many times and have always screwed it up. I even got a tutorial from Jasc and still can't master it. I just seem to ALTER my original pics. I think I don't understand each step and about vector and raster layers. You must use a separate layer for each photo and then somehow use a mask to get rid of the part of the photo you don't want to SHOW. Then you can move them around to suit your taste and it ENDS up looking like one photo and not a photo with other pics pasted on it. Thanks so much for you come-back. Pretty much every time I install new software programs on my computer, the Spybot SD Resident denies the changes.

Can this keep new software from loading properly?

I can see the top edges of two boxes sticking out from top edges of the Remember this Change box which I put a check and it always says its denied.

In other words the box does not display fully. Some items OVERLAP the others, and I can't see what all is there.

Thanks,Just try & change your IE homepage.I changed the home page and it is the same. I went back and checked my settings and the top was back to "160" again. I performed the task a couple times and it kept going back to 160 setting.

When I am saving the work. Its when I go to close the ResHacker page after clicking "compile script" then box opens up to save the change. Then I am to type something in and ckick save.

Am I missing something? Or not saving in the right place? I saw in the "action" column there were were "saves" there as well.

I guess you have to save it as the same file name and in the same location as the original file.
You have the right idea about compiling.
Make a copy of the original and save it in a temp location in case you screw it up.
After that just go for it.
Try saving in the other 'saves' place too.Just got it figured out. I can see the "Allow" box now!

No, it doesn't seem to be on all computers.
It's got me beat why they just don't release a patch for it. I have two computers. And was that way on both of them. (A home built with XP Pro and an older Compaq Presario 5000 with ME on it).

I have a 4 month old AMD Semperon 3100, 1G RAM, SIS onboard video and audio, DirectX 9, etc all up to dat and no SPYWARE.

Cannot install APPLE Quicktime 7, get the above ERROR message when I click Finish on the installation.

Also, when I try to run VideoConverterPro, I immediately get the Sorry this program had to close message. Get that sometimes with Firefox 1.5.

Any idea what is wrong? I tried to install QT in Safe Mode and GOT a dll error message.
