Solve : nero problem?

Answer»

when i burn my souht park episodes to dvd-r the sound and picture occasionaly go out of sinc.
how can i fix this?More details please, Mr. Hankey, about your equipment, software, operating system, etc. to get a good response im using nero 7, the files are around 100mb and there .avi and my computers windows xpA little confused myself on what would cause this type of issue. So I often ask some more questions that may help with resolving this issue.

1. The .avi file you're burning to the CD does it play fine if it's just off your hard disk drive and not the disc?
2. Have you tried playing this on ANOTHER computer?
3. Have you tried playing the .avi file from the CD in a different media player?

Two things that COME to my mind as possible issues.

1. Disc drive is two slow and causing performance issues.
2. There is an issue with codec's that are causing the issue.nero is your issue ,, its not great software for creating DVD movies with try TMPGEnc encoder and TMPGEnc DVD author1. The .avi file you're burning to the CD does it play fine if it's just off your hard disk drive and not the disc?
Yes, it plays fine on windows media player, and the nero player and ALSO on vlc media player without any problems
2. Have you tried playing this on another computer?
nope
3. Have you tried playing the .avi file from the CD in a different media player?
i've got all the episodes on cd-rs and they all work fine when i use them on media players

Two things that come to my mind as possible issues.

1. Disc drive is two slow and causing performance issues.
2. There is an issue with codec's that are causing the issue.

i'll try using that encoder thing and get back to you also.that enoder looks abit complicated, any tips on how to use it and how to find the dvd author and encoder would be appreciated.i'm trying to use the converter but is says this whe i try to load this file:

"file"C\:documentsandsettings\\mydocuments\myvideos\southpark101.avi" can not open, or unsupported"Help please
lol, sorry to post so many TIMES on a row, but..........
If you convert a .avi file to a dvd file will it be better quality when you actually burn it?I can't imagine how you could improve the quality of anything with a conversion. :-?but when i play them on the computer there fine and i dont shrink them or anything?.?Hmm sorry I'm not sure exactly what's going on here, just had my above recommendations. I would give this post a few days and see if anyone is able to come up with anything

Solve : DDR, GDDR-3??

Answer»

I am choosing between an ATI Radeon X800 XL 256MB GDDR-3 AGP graphics card ($240) and an ATI Radeon X850 PRO 256MB DDR AGP graphics card ($225) to play BF-2 & COD-2. I have a DELL Dimension 4600 with 512MB (max 2048MB) of DDR SDRAM. What is the difference between the GDDR-3 graphics card and a DDR graphics card? Can I run the GDDR-3 card in my computer? What about the DDR card? Which one would you choose?

Thank you.Personally, I would pick the cheapest, just because they can run both. You can run both on your computer, but installing could be a pain. I would say the cheaper one, but for $15 bucks, you get more RELIABILITY. But the GDDR-3 is my choice, you really don't NEED to spend more money for something that you don't need.

Solve : Excel problem?

Answer»

When I try to open an excel file that I was working on everyday, the Text Import Wizard comes up and prompts me to go through the steps of text importing. After the steps, the work sheet opened with only endless zero in the cell A1. All the previous work is gone.
I'm not trying to import any text, I just open the file as usual.
When I try to open the same work sheet with the other computer in my office, same thing happens.
And since it happens, all excel work sheet I created ended with same story.
Is it something wrong with my MS Excel?
I couldn't CONFIRM because I don't have the installation disk with me at the moment.

Assuming you're opening a XLS file, the import feature should not kick in. Have you tried scanning your system for viruses, trojans, etc?. If not, now would be a good time. It's possible the Excel startup MACRO is infected.

Another possible solution would be to insert the Excel disk and do a repair install. Be SURE to check for any updates from the Microsoft site after the repair.

I all ELSE fails, UNINSTALL and re-install Excel from scratch.

Good luck. 8-)Thanks.
I'll try to get the installation disk asap.Don't forget updates and Service Pack.
I have bad experience with office because of them

Solve : MS Word numbering problems?

Answer»

I've written about 60 pages of TEXT in Word 2002 (win xp, PC), somehow the numbering has gotten twisted.

When scrolling down using the slider in the right margin, Word lists the page number for navigating purposes in a floating WINDOW over the slider. About halfway thru the document, the page numbers START over at 1. How does one change this? I have a feeling it's LEADING to my other page problems.

Next, when inserting page numbers thru Insert/page number, How can I get it to start numbering on the third page instead of the FIRST?

Thanks.

Solve : Install printer from UNC link in Outlook?

Answer» INTERESTING question if I may. I used to be able to send a PRINTER link by the UNC WITHIN outlook. A person would be able to click on it and install it if not already installed. We have since changed companies and thus got all new machines but use the same version of outlook. However, now when I include a UNC link to a printer, nothing happens. Is this a registry SETTING that needs to be changed or something else? I would like to get this feature back.

Solve : Messed up colours, video files.?

Answer»

After installing the newest video driver for my nvidia geforce 4 MX 440 when i try to PLAY a video file all the colours are messed up, like inverted.....theres nothing about this in the graphics card driver settings and i EVEN tried installing the newest codecs...

this happens for all of my players, bsplayer, powerdvd and windows media player.

the thing is it only happens in the ACTUAL video, my desktop colours are fine, in games the colours are fine just the video....Were you having PROBLEMS before, or you just UPDATED because newer drivers were available? If so, try previous drivers and see if it works OK. Some people are having problems with the latest builds, but I'm not sure if your specific card was involved.

Note to all: BIOS updates and updated video drivers - If you are NOT having problems, there is no reason to update, and other problems may be created.

Absolutely not. That's how it works! At the very least you will get cookies deposited. I guess you could scan your computer thoroughly and be clean, then install it (gulp!) and immediately scan again. You would need several programs - Adaware, Spybot, MS Antispyware and a good antivirus (at the least!)Ill keep it to the same subject. Couple more things about spyware. If i have 2 computers, one using a wireless connection from the other computer. can one computer infect the other computer with spyware. Also if i were to get a virus on one machine could it affect the other.
Thanks.Spyware- probably not, virus -possibly yes, depending on which one.

Answer»

I have recently changed to using MS Word as the default email editor in Outlook 2002 and I'm GETTING a warning dialog box that I would like to disable, but can't find a setting in Outlook Options to disable it.

A jpeg of the dialog box is attached.

How do I stop this APPEARING each time I select "New Message"?

Rgds

First make sure your computer is 100% clean, do the scans.

Download, install & update...
CLEANUP
Ccleaner
ANTI SPYWARE
Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Antispyware (W2k & XP)
ANTI VIRUS
AVG Free (Set options to 'scan all files')
ANTI TROJAN
EWIDO (W2k & XP)

Turn off System Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)

RUN Ccleaner
Run Ad-Aware
Run Spybot
Run Microsoft Antispyware
Run AVG Free
Run Ewido

Re-start in Safe Mode
Re-run AVG Free

Re-start in Normal Mode
Turn on System Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)

Then, and only then,I'd allow access.

Solve : A very odd Outlook problem?

Answer»

I will make this as short as possible. First post.

I needed to SET my STORE folder for my messages to a folder in D drive (C:\ is for the OS). In doing this succesfully, I have this set of extra Personal Folders that is still linked to C:\, but cannot be accessed or deleted. I have attached a pix of the desktop.

This Personal Folders is linked to the default address in C. It has the minimum FILES in it, so it is not really a problem. I would just like to get this right.

I have deleted MS Office completely (twice), and cleaned all that I can find off of C & D drives, but when I re-install - it is the same. I can't seem to get it to the empty start version of Outlook.

Any IDEAS? Thanks for any help.Got it fixed.

I had tried all, to no avail - DELETING and re-installing. This time I deleted all of Office, done a scan with Registry Mechanic, and then re-installed Office - changing the default folder to D:\Program Files\M S Office.

Oh, almost forgot. Before I re-installed it this time - I also did a regedit, and deleted most of what applied to Outlook.

Take care.Very good that you share the solution with us. Welldone!
thanks

Solve : Limewire unable to 'initialize' and start?

Answer»

I have the most recent version of Limewire - 4.10.3. When I try to start it i get an error message: (this occured out of the blue - i changed no settings whatsoever on my computer and did nothing in my knowledge to cause this)

'LimeWire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program blocking LimeWire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart LimeWire'

Obviosally, I go to my firewall settings and make an exception for Limewire/Gnutella/P2P etc etc. but it still wont load. I then turn my firewall off completely, thinking this must surely allow it to run. But no, Limewire still fails to load up and the message appears. I turn off my firewall and the real-time protection on microsoft anti-spyware beta. Nothing has changed, and I am Limewireless.

Any help would be very appreciated, as I urgently need this APPLICATION!

JAMESI don't do P2P and can't solve your problem, but here is some interesting reading for Limewire users:

http://searchviews.com/archives/2005/07/is_limewire_rip.phpok bugger. anyone else come up with any ideas? anything with a remote chance of getting the application to load up?!!jamesbrilliant14.... Not a huge fan of p2p software , but I have used Limewire to get the odd thing ....... You might try reinstalling your previous version that was working. It may also be a good idea to make sure that you remove all bits and pieces of the new version that wouldn't work before you try and reinstall the previous version.

dl65 hmm BAD news im afraid - i had the previous version running when the problem first arose. I then checked on the official site for updates which is when I installed this latest version, so I dont belive that this problem can be put down to an error with the latest release as Limewire was already out of action with the older version. Thanks for your help though.jamesbrilliant14.... I just checked to see which version of Limewire I have installed ....and it's V4.9.3 and is fully functional ...( I just tested it ) By any chance did you click on the LINK that is displayed saying there is a newer version available .........
Do you still have the OLD d/l file ( the installer ) saved on your pc somewhere?

Solve : Print Attachment Filename in Outlook 2000??

Answer»

Problem in Microsoft Outlook 2000 Email.

I WANT the filename of attachments to appear and print in the header of the email message for sent and received files/messages. I can find no form or option that will allow me to do this. Changing to PLAIN Text does not WORK. Outlook EXPRESS does this automatically. I tried to alter the form, but this did not work.

Please, please help.

It's vital for our filing and PRODUCTION process to include filenames of attachments that are sent and received on paper hard-copies, and as of now I'm writing out the filenames.

Solve : WinDVD doesn't like my sound system?

Answer»

I was having trouble with PLAYING DVD's, but not anymore. Got that working. Trouble is, it doesn't recognize the side SPEAKERS in my 7.1. There is an option for 7.1, but testing it proved that only a max of 5.1 is recognized. Is there something I can do to have either this player recognize my entire surround sound, or is there a player that has reliable 7.1 support? (I am cruising the web looking for the second one.)Do you have your Sounds & Multimedia setup for 7.1?Oh, YES. Not only that, but DVDs seem to be the only thing my computer refuses to play in 7.1.Are the DVDs even capable of 7.1 sound?
Have you tried them in another computer? To be honest, I don't know for certain if it'll play 7.1. But I do know that if I set the player to 7.1, and click 'Test', I'll hear sound from all speakers except the side. I also tested the speakers in a Creative Sound Test program to make sure the speakers were working, and they were.

Solve : Outlook express has a mind of its own?

Answer»

I just set up outlook express on my Windows XP computer. When I get to the identity LIST (or any other list) it starts to quickly scroll down the list. Say my identity list CONTAINS Jay's ID and Main Identity, I get to that list and then all the sudden, the last identity is selected.

-It Starts like this
---------------------------
Jay's ID
Main Identity
---------------------------
Then it goes to this all by its self
---------------------------
Jay's ID
Main Identity
---------------------------

And if I select the Jay's Identity, it just selects the last identity, ( Main Identity) , by itself.

Sorry I cant describe it any better.......Try to choose Exit and Log Off from File menu when you are exiting from Outlook.zylstra555..... I could be wrong , but I believe that the "Main Identity" is default unless you change it . Open Outlook Express and click File ...then Identities .....then Manage Identities ...... You can add or delete as you see fit .

dl65 I don't know why it does it. I tried both of these things.
Its almost as if someone was holding down the down arrow KEY. There is nothing wrong with my keyboard. I am not running any scripts.
I'm thinking about deleting the main identity, then re-creating it. Doing that will give me problems with Windows Messenger, because of some auto sign in that cant be disabled.Run for malwares just in case. They are doing everything.

Solve : convert DIVX to something else?

Answer»

can you convert divx files to other things, for free
because you can't edit divx files in Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, and I've found LOADS of cool things (movies) on stage 6 I want to edit
thanksYou can try this page:

However mosst of the converters I found are shareware and only available for a free trial period...afterwards, you'll have to fork over some moolah.Hi,
Just thought I'd tell everyone, because I found out how to do it,
for free.
Right click, choose "open with"
Find "windows media player"(if it's not on the list, click the "browse" button, then go in to the "Window Media Player"folder, and click on "wmplayer".)
If you have media player 11, right click on the top and choose, classic menu then on the top (works with all media player versions) choose FILE save as,
then after the name, write .avi, or .mpg
Hope this helps people.
PS the file size of the movie doesn't get any smaller.
This has to be the worst example of color HIGHLIGHTING i've seen to date...Agreed...Hey i know Im a bit late but i just had to chime in...

saint_hades you're not converting the file by doing what you're describing. All you've done is change the file extension. So it's a divx encoded file with a .mpeg or .whatever extension, but still a divx file none the less. So if you're now able to edit the file in Adobe Premiere you could have saved yourself a lot of trouble by simply changing the extension to .avi instead re-saving it in WMP.Quote

Solve : Help with Excel to pull X page table from web to 1 sheet?

Answer»

Dear COMPUTER Hope Forum,

Please help.

I am trying to download some information from one of my favorite sites, BoardGameGeek.com.

I can browse the "Board Game Geek" Database and sort it by "number of votes" from most votes to least votes:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browse/...s&sortdir=desc

I can create a web QUERY in Excel to pull the main table with the information.

But the table spans a LOT of pages.

What I want to do is pull the main table from page 1, 2, 3, etc... into a single spreadsheet in MS Excel.

Preferably I would like to do this keeping the HTML intact, because I NEED to do a second step to extract the "game ID" from each of the game name links to the specific game pages.

Can anyone help? Please?

Besides pulling 2+ pages into 1 sheet, I need to be able to specify a range. I can use the browse feature of the web to figure out how many pages deep I need go in order to get down to 1-2 votes, but I don't know how to pull the pages into 1 or specify a range.

Thanks!

Lee

P.S. All of this is so I can use another program BGG 2 NanDeck to download more information than is available via the browse feature on Board Game Geek. Once I have the single spreadsheet above with all the games that have at least 1 or 2 "votes". I can extract out a list of game ids and feed that into BGG2NanDeck. That will let me pull detailed information for each game. But I need to have a list of games that have votes... BGG 2 NanDeck "crashes" if a game has no votes, so I can't just REQUEST every sequential game ID number from BGG 2 NanDeck.I noticed the URL I am trying to pull from didn't paste correctly.

The correct URL is here:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame?sort=numvoters&sortdir=desc

Solve : Help creating a .bat routine?

Answer»

I am WRITING what I hope is a simple routine; call a ftp site and then enter a user name and password. When I TRY what I have done so far; I NEED to enter a carraige return to move to the next line. Is there a way to do that? I haven't figured it out yet.

ThanksQuote

You can put the inputs you need into a separate text FILE, then use that as input by USING the < syntax
For example, if you need to press Enter key:
- open Notepad with a new text file
- press the Enter key
- save the new file (say call it enter.txt) in the same folder as your bat file
-use the file as input like this from the command-line:
yourbatfile < enter.txt

Solve : outlook 2007 goes in outbox before sending?

Answer»

windows 8
office 2007
outlook 2007
samsung laptop
I compose a new email and outlook sends it to my outbox and eventually sends it. This never happened with my previous PC ... same outlook edition. My outlook send/receive settings are configured for send and check email every 1 minute etc... I tried unchecking that box but message STILL goes to outbox. So as you are typing it, it decides to send it partially created? No. I complete the email and send it. It use to immediately send but now with my new PC (same 2007 outlook w/ my key code) the message will go to my outbox for some PERIOD of time. then eventually send. I will go to the outbox to open and a pop up says "can't open outlook has BEGUN sending. Have you used the Detect and Repair tool under Help ? ... Just saw you had Outlook 2007 and they changed the tool in 2007 from 2003 that I am use to using. Had to use it a bunch of times for clients. But anyways here is a link on how to get to and using repair tools for 2007 to try to fix issues:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/what-happened-to-detect-and-repair-HA010100384.aspxThis is normal behavior. All messages go to the outbox before actually being sent. Outlook knows that all messages in the outbox are ready to be sent. If there is some CONNECTION problem, Outlook will stack/spool the messages and they will be sent as soon as the connection is restored. It has always been this way. I assure you, it was the same with your old system. I've OBSERVED this behavior with Outlook, just as Allan described. If you want to send a message that's sitting in the Outbox, I believe you can open Outbox, select your message, click Send, and it will then be sent without any further delay.

Solve : Advanced systemcare ultimate antivirus / Avast ? Help please!?

Answer»

Hi,I heard that anti viruses could ruin the performance or slow down the computer itself
So when i knew it i disabled my avast,I never do scaning anymore
I'm a gamer so i tried so many utilities to increase performance like CCleaner, Advanced system care 6, etc..
The utilities mentioned above are what i used to use now,SINCE i knew about advanced systemcare ultimate which has all in one (Iobit.com 's utility) I got so excited on trying it so i bought it
And ASC ultimate have an anti virus in it,So i'm wondering if AVC ultimate have any differences between avast or ASC ultimate?
And if anti viruses really slow down our computer, Should the anti virus be uninstalled on our pc or never to scan ? and i want to know which one between avast and ASC ultimate MAKES my computer slow And is it necessary to use anti viruses anyway? It removes viruses well yeah but people said it slows down computer so i'm confused
My father put avast since i bought my new laptop and i don't remember ever if i scanned it or not but still i'm worried
And i feel bad to uninstall it , but if it's necessary then i have to do what's best for me right? well if disabling it would be enough then that would be good..

If you got more information please feel free to share because i wanted to know more and it could help other people who reads this Please do not post the same question more than once. I deleted the duplicate.
You should always have an Anti-virus installed. I use Avast Free Edition and scan once a week.

I used to use Advanced System Care, but it was a big resource hogger so i un-installed it.

IMO, just use Avast and scan regularly. I agree with reddevilggg. I also use Avast Free Edition in my Windows XP and Windows 7 systems. Under certain circumstances such as gaming, perhaps you could temporarily disable your antivirus. But, I really don't know WHETHER this is SAFE since I'm not a gamer. If you want to try doing this, then I think you should first do some research to try to get some solid information about how safe your gaming ARENA is. Appreciate for the reply,Thank you!The difference between Advanced System Care and Avast are that ACS is what's commonly known as a protection "suite"...that is it's supposed to be an all in one protection package that does many things...whereas Avast is a stand alone anti-virus app...

Personally after testing ACS on my PC awhile back it didn't last long.
You're mileage may vary...
The key to remember is to only have one A/V app installed at one time so choose wisely and go from there...

Solve : Links Stopped Working on Outlook Express?

Answer»

I recently changed security settings as instructed by Verizon FiOS. I THOUGHT we only changed the port numbers for incoming/outgoing servers but it seems like since we made the CHANGES, I can not open any links that are contained in my emails. Can anyone give me some tips on what may be going on? Thanks.

PS I am not 100% sure that the problem started immediately after Verizon and I made the security setting changes but that APPEARS to be the most likely explanation.

Edit: I just found a post where someone had the same problem. They had inadvertently installed Google Chrome and then uninstalled it. They said it "messed-up" their keys and they had to change everything back to htmlfiles. I also inadvertently installed Chrome when doing some other update and I then unistalled it. How do I change back to htmlfiles?Never mind...all fixed. All I had to do was SET IE as default. APPARENTLY the install/uninstall of Chrome changed the default.

Solve : Storing Photographs?

I sincerely hope it is me that is misunderstanding this whole diatribe...
If not i apologise in advance. In my reference in an above post i incorrectly ID'd UDF as the wrong format...that is incorrect...
Although UDF is technically packet-writing format it's not the one i was referring to in my comments.
I can't remember what it was called way back when but it basically emulated read/writing to CD's same as floppies... hence you never got the full storage capacity when burning.

So thanx for the above correction Geek...All I wanted to do is remove photos from PC in case of hard drive failure. Thank you all for your replies, I learned a lot.

No, the horse is still moving. One more shot will do it.

Warranty only covers the replacement of the device. However, it insoles the company has made an effort to ensure QUALITY control in production.
An area where it matters in in promotional advertising. This has led to some companies really getting serious about the flash drive.

The marketplace is filled with USB Flash Drives of vastly varying quality. Some are excellent, although many are completely unfit for the purpose of data storage. If you are considering a bulk purchase of logo-branded USB Flash Drives for promotional purposes, a good quality PRODUCT that will enhance your brand image is essential. In pursuit of the lowest price, many bulk purchasers encounter suppliers at the unacceptable end of the quality spectrum.

We sent Henry Jacksen (Quality Control manager for the Flashbay Factory ) out into the marketplace to investigate the competition. "The findings were quite worrying in most cases," said Jacksen. "Of the hundreds of models tested, we have chosen just one as a comparison to illustrate the common quality pitfalls." The report below shows our standard Classic USB Flash Drive COMPARED to the common copy. Jacksen adds that, "Many corporate gift distributors buy the copy direct from unscrupulous manufacturers in China who cut too many corners, resulting in serious quality issues."

Did he WALK away and leave his dying horse?
First of all, pc users have been copying and saving photos (and most other data) to cd's and dvd's for over 25 years. It works fine. And if the burn process fails you'll know right away and you can redo it. There is zero risk.

By the way, I guess I've been lucky but in all the years I've been using cd's and dvd's as backup media (and this goes back to the mid '80s when they were first introduced) I've had fewer than a handful of burn failures. If you use name brand media, handle them properly, and take your time you are less likely to run into trouble (though it's bound to happen once or twice regardless).

Solve : External harddrive needs formatting????

Answer»

I have a problem. Well, I have a 500GB external Seagate harddrive. Well, I have alot of data on there that I need to get off, I haven't backed it up in MONTHS (yes, thats my fault. LOL)

Anyway, I plug it in today and get the dredded "This drive needs to be formatted before use". I can't figure out how to fix it. After a quick Google search, I went and got "Active Partition Recovery for Windows". I used the "fix boot sector" multiple times and it still doesn't work Active Partition Recovery still says there is 108GB worth of data on the Drive, so it's still there, just how do I get to it!!??!?!

Any help would be great.

Thank you.How is it reported in Disk Management ? ?

- Don't use 2.5" external drives
- Don't use enclosed external drives
- Get a Dock and a 3.5" Seagate drive
(Dock will run cooler, and have less complicated electronics)

For your current situation -
Get an external Dock (that is one where you shove a 3.5" drive vertically into it, and much of it is visible to you and to the air).
You don't say much about your external drive, but I believe most docks will also take a 2.5" drive
Try removing your drive from it's enclosure, and shove it into the dock. There is a chance that the electronics on your old enclosure are playing up.
It is worth a try.

If your drive was IDE, you can get a wee plastic thingy, with power supply, and USB connection, for READING your IDE drive. Under $10.I disagree with A B and 1/2 of C in the 1st paragraph...

I'll elaborate just a bit...
Nothing wrong with 2.5" HDD's being used as external backup/data drives...i have 2 currently being used that are 3 + years and going strong...

My favorite external enclosure uses A/C power a definite must because of the flaky USB ISSUES i sometimes encounter with customers PC's.
It accomodates 4 different HDD styles...older laptop HDD's...SATA laptop HDD's and both SATA and IDE 3.5" HDD's.
Pretty handy as i never know what style the customers internal drives may be.

It also has a cooling fan that is switched, sturdy design, yet takes no time to open and swap drives into.

As far as docks yes they are a handy alternative...but usually limited to one style connector.

Solve : Best Free Hard Drive Image utility for Windows 7??

Answer»

I have seen a number of free Image utilities online, but was curious as to which one is best for Windows 7 which will allow burning a SPANNED DVD image set?

Recently I found that my licensed copy of Norton Ghost 2003 does not like Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium. I am trying to find a suitable replacement to Ghost 2003 that will allow burning of spanned disc's to create a restore set for my highly configured Windows 7 box. Recently when I had to rebuild my Windows 7 box I was reminded of how important it is to create a GOOD image set to baseline my machine and save from hours of rebuilding with software installs, security updates, and custom configurations.

I know that I could just use a restore point if the HD remains healthy, but as was the case with this most recent rebuild, the 250GB Hard drive crashed with the clunk of death and all data was lost, so I want to avoid restore points as my only method of restoration. Back in the days of my Windows XP builds Ghost 2003 had my system back up and running from burned CD and DVD's quickly and all I had to do is perform security updates for updates/patches that were released after the burn date of the image.http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspxAdditionally, here's something I put together a while back in response to a question on another forum. It may be of some use to you:

Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that requires you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "test" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to return to the prior state any time you choose.

I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of breed, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is Macrium Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the options. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image.

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (ie, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS (installing a service pack, upgrading IE, etc). Also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (cd, dvd, external drive, etc). For obvious reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The best option is a second internal hd if you have one.

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to finish the process. Alternatively, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you can create when you first install the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). Other partitions can be restored without a reboot.Quote from: Allan on July 19, 2012, 07:08:04 AM

As far as free, how would you compare Macrium Reflect with Paragon Backup and Recovery 11. If memory serves me, I believe that it was you that informed us of these free apps. on Giveaway of the Day. I did take ADVANTAGE of both. Just recently though I also backed up my systems with Paragon 11 (compact version) but have not yet used recovery. The compact version appears to be just that. Simple and easy to use.

Thks, BC_ and I hear what you're saying. I do however have my systems backed up with other "tried and trusted". These I know work. In the event that this Paragon "compact version" could have possibly??? gave me action, I threw the question out there. Right now my systems are running as they should. In this case the thought came to mind; if it ain't broken, don't fix it.
overthehillGood evening overthehill

Just in case you are not aware of it W7 has it's own imaging tool. When you use it you will be prompted to make a disk and where you want to store the image. I don't know if W7 basic has image function but I do know W7 Home Premium does.

Just go to control panel > system and security > back up and restore and look on the left for "create a system image" and "create system repair disk. The down fall to this built in UT is you cant pick to restore say a couple of files but you can restore the PC to the point when the image was made in-case of hard drive failure.

Hope this helps Quote from: hartbeatmr on July 21, 2012, 04:17:00 PM

Thks, hartbeatmr for your input.
But, my question was more related to Macrium being the best free backup and recovery.
If you notice my profile you will see that I'm running Vista. EASEUS and Macrium Reflect have worked well for me but I was a little curious about Macrium being the best and was simply wondering about the comparison (Macrium vs Paragon) which Allan has already answered. I didn't mean to stick my nose into a Win 7 thread but was curious about the comparison. overthehillThanks for everyones input on this... going to have to check into what hartbeatmr stated with W7 built in image feature. I created the System Repair Disc, but wasn't aware of a System Image Feature built into 7 for full recovery. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Long time ago I use to use the windows backup utility, but I got burned with that utility with system/data state recovery one too many times failing and then having to perform a full lengthy rebuild.

When first introduced to Ghost 2003 I was like OMG FINALLY a system recovery tool that I can count on and with so many recovery features. At first I used it just burning CD's back then,( like 12 CD-R's per system image) but then when I found the ability to save money and time not burning disc's and backup system image from work stations to a system with large hard drive to store images of the many systems and being able to push the image over the LAN to the workstations, that then became my most favorite feature. Even converted my 1.44MB floppy of ghost boot for network support with static IP to a bootable CD that acts like A: drive. This was the perfect method until Windows 7 came along and didnt play well with Ghost 2003. Also newer versions of Ghost to have the Network Imaging options, you have to buy into Enterprise Licensing of Ghost which is costly. I decided to buy 4 boxes/Licenses of Ghost 2003 to be properly licensed for my 4 Windows 2000 & XP machines.

Will also check into Macrium Reflect to see which one I like better. And as BC stated and I learned with the old Windows System Backup/Restore utility, you should always test to make sure you have a good backup/image. I have a spare HD that I will place into my system to push the image to and test for success before labeling my DVD-R's as being a tested "known to be good" recovery set.Quote from: DaveLembke on July 23, 2012, 11:41:17 AM

All 6 versions of Windows 7 (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate) have the backup image feature. However, to backup to network share you need one of the last three on that list. All will backup images to hard drive or DVD sets. I have been using it for 2 years.

This is very sensible. Without knowing your backup solution will work, you are taking a big gamble.
Cool... I found it!

I guess I never found this feature because of my grudge against MS Backup and Restore of years past. Sweet that they finally made the transition to an Image vs *.bak files which never worked out well for system recovery for me, even when installing say a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro and then using the backup - restore from backup utility to stomp on top of the clean OS to push original build system state/ programs over top of clean.

Many thanks everyone. Going to try this out tonight ... And TEST I know it says if you make a system image backup you cannot restore individual files or folders, but in fact the image is a standard vhd and you can mount it as a drive letter and copy whatever you like.

When i 1st installed Vista 64bit Ultimate after everything was setup the way i like with all important apps having a fresh install i created the image...

Then threw a spare HDD in to test and the image got to 91 % and failed...

Needless to say i have no impression of Win7's image app as i refuse to try it.Quote from: patio on July 23, 2012, 03:57:29 PM

I suspect you found out that the HDD is unreliable. I have used the W7 image backup on 1 64 GB pen drive, 4 different hard drives: (1 internal, 1 USB, 1 FireWire and 1 NAS) and have restored OK from all of them.
I've just created a sector by sector image of my HD using EASEUS DiskCopy. It seemed to work OK, the sample of files I looked for were present and correct, the partitions ands data on them were all the correct size to better than the nearest 0.01 GB.

I haven't used my copy (backup), I hope never to have to !

This version (free one) of EASEUS requires you to make a bootable CD/DVD, and you run it by booting from that. This has the advanrage, they say, of making it O/S independent.

but I've another question:
I'm running W7 on an HP Pavilion, and I've just been reading in HP Advisor about the W7 Image backup, which has also been described in this topic. I was thinking of making a set of 'System Recovery Disks' using HP's own software, which only allows to you do this once, when I read this article. The question is, why would anyone use HP proprietary software to create System Recovery Disks (4 or 5 DVDs I understand) which modifies your system, when you can make as many system images as you like with the W7 backup imaging software, which preserves your system ?

I haven't used my copy (backup), I hope never to have to !
As I believe has been noted before in this thread by myself and others, backing up or imaging a drive without then testing the created image/backup is not a good idea, for a few reasons.

1. The Interface will be unfamiliar.

So you find that your drive is corrupted, or something is wrong and you need to restore the Image. The first question is how. The second, is once you know how, you aren't going to be as familiar with the restore interface as you were with the backup interface, and given the possibility of lost data and the general anxiety this sort of thing can cause, one wrong move or mistaken button press could end badly.

2. There is no reason to assume the image is good

The only way to know if an image is actually good to restore is to restore it, the same way you would if you had a Hard drive disaster or other issue that required you to do so. I would recommend that this become a part of the routine; make the backup image, verify it, and then restore from it. Obviously the last item has some issues that might crop up, so it might work better with a configuration that let's you restore without overwriting existing data (since if you restore in place and find it was corrupted you no longer have the originals!). Most imaging programs have good verification techniques but you cannot trust them 100% and more importantly It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the restore interface so you aren't wandering blind when you do need to restore.

Backing up and imaging is only a safety net if it works. Many people create backup images that simply do not work for one reason or another, meaning they are BASICALLY wasting time to make their data feel safer, rather than actually making it safer.

"Recovery" disks wipe everything and put the machine into the factory default state. This means it will have any originally installed (bundled) applications and other crapware. Personally I never use the recovery disks.Quote

Quote of the Month Finalist ! !This post is for future Googlers
Allan recommended Acronis, and lamented that it was not free.
Assuming that you write your images to somewhere safe (EG an external Dock, with a 3.5" drive sticking vertically out of it), then Acronis HAS A FREE VERSION.
Buy a Seagate 3.5" drive to shove vertically into your dock.
Make sure that the dock can take a 2GB drive, as that size is the sweet spot (in Aust) for price per GB (TB).
Now go to the Seagate web site, and download the free Seagate DiscWizard (Acronis program).
After you install the program, immediately make a bootable CD, and use that for your image creating and recovering. I do that, and I only use the installed program for browsing the contents of past images (looking for a file or two).

Acronis have foolishly 'hidden away' the Verify option. You get to it via the Tools option, where your history of past images are listed. If you right click one there will be a Verify option. You should always Verify your images, immediately after creating them.

I have two external drives, in their individual Docks ($25 per Dock), so that I am not shoving drives in and out. I alternate the drives that I save images into. Quote from: Dumb_Question on August 02, 2012, 03:49:25 PM

I have a new HP laptop (Windows and just made a set of 'System Recovery Disks' using HP's own software. It took 6 DVDs. As far as I know, all manufacturers provide a way to do this. Many years ago, manufacturers issued recovery discs (for full restoration to the original configuration) with new computers. When manufacturers stopped doing that, probably to save costs, they added the capability for the user to create a set of recovery discs. These user-created recovery discs are the same thing as the recovery partition on the hard drives of these newer systems but, of course, the recovery partition on the hard drive will be useless if the hard drive fails.

As you and others have stated, a set of such recovery discs can only take your system back to the original configuration. So, I agree that making periodic drive images with a drive imaging tool such one of the ones mentioned in previous posts is the best practice. After you've made many changes to a computer, you really don't want to have to go back to day one and re-configure it all over again. Still, having a set of recovery DVDs seems worthwhile; that way, you do have the option of going back to the original configuration and getting a fresh start.
I just now realized I quoted a post from Aug. 2012. If I had noticed at the time, I would not have posted. Hey its fine..lol... i've done that before or accidentally posted to the virus/malware section by accident where I am not allowed to yet until I get the necessary qualifications to do so.

I ended up getting a drive duplicator for $80 and going this route actually. My system although is a Compaq is basically just the Compaq enclosure with all new guts inside. The Windows 7 install was a clean installation so I didnt have the option for burning a system restore set as computers off the shelf come with these days. Back when I bought this Compaq in 2003 and it came with Windows XP Home it had this utility and that came in handy for a few rebuilds until the motherboard died in 2009 after 6 years of heavy use.

So currently I have a master backup drive that is 500GB that I can use to build other 500GB drives off of and insert into this computer. I tried to perform a 500GB to 1.5TB clone and it did not like cloning different sized drives to migrate the data from 500GB to 1.5TB, but if I wanted to, I could always use the Seagate Disk Utility that came with the 1.5TB to migrate the 500GB to the 1.5TB at some point. The drive duplicator is pretty simple, just populate it with drives in the correct locations to not write an empty drive of 0's to the drive with all the data and start it and it has an LED indicator that shows its progress. Transfer took almost 1.25 hrs drive to drive for 500GB and I positioned a desk fan blowing cool air across them as they chugged and one was built from the other.

Solve : Best internet monitoring program??

Answer»

Hi all, for the last few hours I have SCOURED the internet in an attempt to find the best internet monitoring software for what I want but have ultimately gotten stuck. I was hoping that someone with a bit of KNOWLEDGE about this on here might be able to direct me, seeing as these programs aren't cheap. Win-Spy had everything I wanted, however their site seemed rather odd and reviews I read said that they collect your personal data (such as credit card info when you buy it) and then later misuse it.

So basically the features I want in the program are:

-To monitor everything (key logs, CHATS, emails, sites visited, programs accessed, screenshots, etc)
-Have Remote Install (Install the program on a PC I don't have access to but I want this done WITHOUT its user knowing it)

Obviously they all come with a lot more, but the most important features for me are the ones listed above.

Any help will be much appreciated.Hi,

Spytech SentryPC is the best solution for you, they have a Spy Suite package also.. Have a look at ___________________________ for getting more information about their products..

Link Removed...Hi,

Thanks zugarrondo, am also looking for the same software.. Is there any freeware tool for that? My primary requirement is to monitor the internet traffic, it includes, visited sites information, chat logs etc.. can you please help me with it?

I just visited the site that Zug had referred you to, it was malicious. Perhaps it was a typo on the link or whatever, anyhow I would recommend trying Beyond Keylogger, not only will it log keys but it will do everything else from screen shots to chat logs.

Why do you want to do this?

Why do you want to do this?

Why not? It is a feature readily available on some of these types of programs, and there is nothing wrong with it as long as you go about it in a legal way. You have to own the computer you're installing it on, and that is what makes this legal even if you're installing it on a computer you don't have physical access to. But what you DESCRIBE could be breaching somebody else's privacy, if not hacking, and since you are being decidedly cagey about details, such as who is using this computer that you "own" (or that you say you own) and what you want to install, and why you don't want them to know you're installing it, it is hard to see what advice this forum can give you.
I don't have to tell anyone why I would like to install it or who is using what. That's information that I am not going to disclose to people I do not know. All I wanted was a little advice on which program offered exactly the things I mentioned and if anybody had any overall recommendations. I am not asking people on here how to hack or invade someone's privacy, I am asking for information about software that is already legally available for sale. I don't have to tell anyone why I would like to install it or who is using what.

Of course; that is your right. And we don't have to tell you anything either.

Fair enough, but I just didn't think that I would have to reveal personal info just for advice. Maybe to acquire such a program, but not for advice on a forum... But if that's how it has to be then so be it, thanks for your interest in my topic anyway. Quote from: lfccl05 on November 24, 2010, 12:43:05 PM

The problem is that when people ask certain questions, and "How can I install software on a remote computer without the user being aware of it?" falls squarely into that category, we have to consider not only that individual who might (or might not) have an innocent purpose, but also the fact that this forum is on the World Wide Web. That means that anybody, anywhere in the world, well or badly intentioned, can type "install software on remote computer" into Google and just surf on in and read the thread. In other words it is a public forum. That is one reason that we hesitate to help with certain things. Also some of us may have personal objections to doing things that might be regarded as spying on others or interfering with their privacy. Some heavy HANDED parents come on here asking for advice on how to spy on their children.

Solve : Compile cuts from DVD?

Answer»

How can I patch together specific portions of 3 DVD exercise videos so that I can follow only the moves I want in the ORDER desired? It could remain on the hard drive so long as they would run in sequence to the end without attention from me. Or could also be on a new DVD COMPILED. This would eliminate the break in a routine necessary to find, unload then LOAD a DVD, search the location. click and wait etc.... Is this possible or does someone have an alternative suggestion?

I'm not very familiar with the options to edit or make movies but do have some skills to put this together if I had the software, etc.

Many thanks!

Solve : recommendations for video editor and file format?

Answer»

From a 45 minute avi that is black and white and no sound, I want to select various parts and save them as separate files (30 seconds to 1 minute). The saved segments will be uploaded to a website.

I am new to digital video so any recommendation for a simple-basic editor and file format to save the segments to would be very helpful.
After GOOGLING 'Free avi editor', the first on the list was

http://www.solveigmm.com/?Products&id=AVITrimmer

Hope this helps!I have been using VIRTUALDUB for this kind of thing for years. It has a SLIGHTLY steeper learning curve than some of the "hold your hand" type of PROGRAMS, but it richly repays the small effort required. It is the standard by which other free editors are JUDGED.

VirtualDub get's my vote, I use it for all my video editing.

Solve : Remote?

Answer»

I was hoping that someone could give me a good suggestion for an RDP program that I could load into my Windows PE tool disk I'm developing.

I was leaning towards realVNC but I haven't used it much before other than through labtec. I have a guinea pig computer hooked up to the repair bench I was going to try installing the VNC server on, but the problem is that i've got the bench hooked up to a different network than my shop PC (where I installed the VNC viewer on). I would have to open a port on the watchguard firebox and VNC would have to do a forward DNS LOOKUP on our company's server and I would have to open a port to listen for the VNC. I guess my question is: Does realVNC do forwards DNS lookups or is it restricted to an IP address?

Sounds like a pain. I would love to know if maybe there's a possibility of using LOGMEIN or something on my windows PE disk. Sorry for the rambling, but I'm writing my thoughts as I go.Have you used realVNC?

From the documentation:
Quote

Networking
VNC software requires a TCP/IP connection between the server and the viewer. This is the standard networking protocol on LANs, WANs, broadband and dialup ISP. Each computer has a unique IP address and may also have a name in the DNS. You will need to know the IP address or name of the server when you connect a viewer to it.

Sometimes the IP address is fixed, and sometimes it is issued to you dynamically by your ISP. If it is allocated dynamically, you might consider using a third party DNS management service. Try typing "dynamic dns management service" into a google.
From this one would learn that the program does use DNS where needed.
Or am I not understanding this? The best solution for you seems like Teamviewer, I use it quite often and its really a cinch to connect to many different computers. You can get it here: www.Teamviewer.comI actually havent gotten around to trying it yet, I was just hoping someone would confirm that it does resolve DNS names so I can break outside of the LOCAL network. I will LET you know later.

Thanks powerhouse, I will try teamviewer. I'm just looking for something very lightweight.Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 23, 2010, 10:37:26 PM

I think what I'll do is create a virtual machine on my computer, assign it a static IP and create a rule in the firewall that will open a port for VNC. Then install the server in PE and the viewer in the virtual machine so I can connect. *crosses FINGERS*

Solve : Merge two 1 TB drives data into a Raid 1?

Answer»

I have two identical drives, 1 TB each. I have about 300 GBs on drive A and about 450 on drive B. Is their software what will merge the data into 1 750GB Raid 1 "Mirror Set".

Or, if that not possible.

I copy the 300 on disk A to Disk B then run some sort of deduplication script? any freeware dedup software?

Thank you for any input.

JayWhat you want and what you get will be two THINGS that may differ.
If folders h at root have same names, there is a conflict. If files i folders of the same name at the same level are the same names, you have a confict.

Sorry, I have a hard TIME explaining this. I MEAN to say that if both drives have the same directories, you have a conflict. And if you MERGER the directories and there are files with the same name, you have a conflict.

You have to decide how to organize duplication.
Please read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_synchronization

WARNING: If you Google for software that es this, you will get some that are hostile sites.
The KEYWORDS you chose will bring up sites that have optimized for Google because they want your money.

I think this one is safe to look at. But I have not used it.

Does that 300MB include installed programs? If so, that won't work; programs need to installed in the directory from which they be run after being installed. Otherwise, the copying - well, actually, I believe you want to move, not copy - will work.

Solve : chrome.dll is not a valid windows image?

Answer»

I really hope someone can help with this, it's driving me nuts.

I'm running XP SP3. Earlier, I downloaded and installed vcredist x_86 2010. As soon as it finished installing I got error messages all over the place, the most persistent being "chrome.dll is not a valid windows image" and chrome would display the AW snap error message for every page. Tried using Internet Explorer and that wouldn't even start. So, I removed the installed file using add or remove programs in the control panel and restarted. Since then I've at least managed to use chrome, but it still keeps crashing occasionally and GIVING me the not a valid windows image message. Have I completely screwed my pc?

Any help will be appreciated!

EDIT: Since I 1st posted this, I've had a variety of error messages.

Chrome.exe - iphlpapi.dll not found
system32\dbghelp.dll not a valid windows image
chrome\application\8.0.555.2.00\locales\en-gb.dll not a valid windows image

Copied and pasted from my history.OK...just double checking...
Have you tried ti uninstall/re-install Chrome ?Reinstalled after my last post. No problems yet, but they come and go, so I'll have to wait a while before I know for sure.Good enough...
Best of Luck.I had so hoped that this was sorted, but I was wrong

Now flash keeps crashing and the whole browser seizes. When I tried to open task manager to kill it I got this message:

taskmgr.exe - this application failed to initialize properly (0xcoooo12d)

I had to log off my user profile to unfreeze it and when I did, INSTEAD of taking me to the usual page with all the users listed I had a login box on a black screen. When I logged back on I got this message:

daemon tools lite - Program requires at least Windows 2000 with SPTD 1.60 or higher. Kernel debugger must be deactivated.

This has me a little bit worried!

EDIT: chrome is crashing with the aw snap message again. If System Restore is enabled, you could try restoring your system, using a restore point created before you installed vcredist.Just tried system restore. It didn't seem to make any difference so I undid it. Any ideas? Please?

EDIT: Flash is working again (for now at least). You could try some of the suggestions mentioned here:

Hmmm.... not that I'm complaining, but the problem seems to have fixed itself Maybe it was doing a system restore? Well, thanks for the help anyway! HOPEFULLY I'm not going to get a couple of dozen error messages as soon as I post this

This Microsoft guide should help: Calculating subtotals and working with levels in ExcelNo, this does not seem to work. I used the COUNTIF to calculate how many items are assigned to an individual contractor. For example LONG Flooring has 5 items assigned to them. All items are opened but 1, what formula can I use to determine by number and value which items are opened and which items are closed. I have worked the totals to the side of my worksheet, that being said I need to be able to put a formula into the cell I want the information to show. All contractors are in one column and "Open" and "Closed" are in one column TOGETHER. Please helpQuote
No, this does not seem to work.
I suspect that's because you're not familiar with it and you are not using it the right way. Anyway, here's another suggestion. Try using AutoFilter (from the main menu, Data, Filter, AutoFilter. A reference: http://www.excelfunctions.net/ExcelFilter.html

If you can create a spreadsheet with the same layout as yours, using fictitious data, and attach it to a forum post, I'll take a look later (will be away from computer for some hours; may be TONIGHT before I'll be back). To attach a file to a forum post, click on Additional Options... at the bottom of the forum message composition panel and click the Browse button at the right of the box under Attach. I sure thank you for your time.

This would depend on your countries laws. For example here in New Zealand we are able to make one copy of any disc/mp3/tape whatever for out own use, as long as we retain the original. even if the original is dead beyond use we still must hold onto it in order to keep the backup copy for use.

You might want to check it out first, then decide from there.Quote from: Kurtiskain on November 15, 2010, 03:00:45 PM

I live in the USLooking around the net there are mixed results of whether copying PS2 disks is legal, it seems 50% say yes, 50% say no.

The U.S Copyright law states this, however:

Quote
Can I backup my computer software?
Yes, under certain conditions as provided by section 117 of the Copyright Act. Although the precise term used under section 117 is “archival” copy, not “backup” copy, these terms today are used interchangeably. This privilege extends only to computer programs and not to other types of works.

Under section 117, you or someone you AUTHORIZE may make a copy of an original computer program if:

* the new copy is being made for archival (i.e., backup) purposes only;
* you are the legal owner of the copy; and
* any copy made for archival purposes is EITHER destroyed, or transferred with the original copy, once the original copy is sold, given away, or otherwise transferred.

You are not permitted under section 117 to make a backup copy of other material on a computer's hard drive, such as other copyrighted works that have been downloaded (e.g., music, films).

It is also important to check the terms of sale or license agreement of the original copy of software in case any SPECIAL conditions have been put in place by the copyright owner that might affect your ability or right under section 117 to make a backup copy. There is no other provision in the Copyright Act that specifically authorizes the making of backup copies of works other than computer programs even if those works are distributed as digital copies.

To me, a PS2 is simply a computer with 3 cores, a CPU, a GPU and an SPU.Quote from: Kurtiskain on November 15, 2010, 04:41:55 PM

Solve : Microsoft Outlook: PST vs Mail Storage?

Answer»

Hi,

Looking for pros & cons of having a PST VS Mail Storage (Exchange Server) for the mails.
Kindly let us know the +ve & -ve of both.

Thanks in advanceAn Exchange server is usually employed when multiple users want to share Outlook calendars, tasks, EMAIL, etc. If you're not WORKING in a multi-user environment or you SIMPLY don't need to do such sharing, then there's no point is going the Exchange server route; just use PST. I have both the OPTIONS of Exchange Server & PST.
Needless to say we do sharing & collaborate.

I had been using PST for the past couple of years but all my colleagues use Exchange Server storage for mails.
Hence, wondering about the pros & cons of both.
