Solve : Excel Cond. Formatting: if value >x,shade red. but it also shades "

Answer»

I have a SPREADSHEET with a large SET of numbers/values which includes "<" values (i.e. 1, 1, 2, 1.1, 0.1, <1, 1, 4, <3, etc...). I'm trying to get Conditional Formatting to shade CELL values if they are greater than a value (i.e. shade cell if it's value is greater than 1)... this works great for numbers, but if the cell has a "<" sign in its value, it GETS shaded.

Any easy ways to ignore the values (do not shade) with "<" signs?

Thanks JGB

Sounds like you might be right clicking on dynamically created thumbnails, and this might be why you get the results you have described. Maybe you need to give us much more information... e.g. a link to a page where you get the problem occurring, which browser you are using etc etc.
OK, i will try to recorate the file as you say, so it will be to-morrow night as i have not done it ti-night.Bikini Babes?

Nice pictures Geek, i did'nt know that was your favorite site to visit

I see you are also a wordpress blogger.I have found out what is going wrong.

When i right click and save as they download ok.

What i have been doing in file name is adding the web url so that i can give credit for the photo, so that must change the photo to a file, but it only happens 50% of the time.

So i'll add the web url after downloading from now on.

So everyone ONE has learnt a little today from this thread

Solve : Black Screen after windows updates?

Answer»

Ok I have a Toshiba Satellite L745, I have reformatted the hard drive, it's a clean install Windows 7 , all is good until I update windows and it CONFIGURES then the screen goes black. oddly enough you can use an external display monitor and it works fine but the display on the laptop is black. Tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling the driver from toshiba website but the same thing happens. Any one have any Ideas?update ... I now have installed all updates for windows 7 and service pack 1.. when I boot up now most of the time it works fine but every so often there is a strip of HORIZONTAL colored line down the right hand side of the screen. Also sometimes right after the windows logo it will go black and reboot..when it boots up again it works. Sometimes also I can POWER off and power back on and it takes me to the logon screen. ??Does it do the same on an external monitor ? ?Does it happen in SAFEMODE also on the laptop screen? I does not do the same on external monitor and it does the same in safe mode on the laptop. That's odd as the same thing happens in safemode but not by the external monitor. Maybe reseat the ribbon cable for the LCD screen? I am not sure that its a possible inverter problem or GPU chipset basing on your post but not impossible. Does your laptop is built-in with any hardware diagnostic for RAM and Video testing maybe? hi
i have same problem
but i resolved it by reinstalling my indows

Solve : Transfering Pictures?

Answer»

Hi, I have pictures stored in Picassa that I would like to TRANSFER to another computer. Is there an easy way to do this as I have been making a CD for each file but I think I am wasting space on the CD,s but don't know how to combine the folders/files in Picassa
Thanks for any help someone might give me on this.
DeeflippyThe most efficient way (if your 2 computers are NOT networked) is to USE a portable USB flash drive and put them on the flash drive then put the flash drive into a USB port on the receiving computer and into a DESIRED folder location. Then you can delete them from the flash drive or retain them on it as a backup--your CHOICE. truenorth

Solve : Please help ?!??

* Problem solved. Look below if you don't want to read this Wall of Text.

This Perverted RealDownloader keeps Perverted
It's from RealPlayer, you know, this button with what you can Download a Video '' with one click ''

Well, I want to get rid of it.
But how..?

First I Googled online to try and find Solution. they Explained how, but it was for the/an older version I think ( it didn't worked for me )
This day ( I started yesterday with this problem ) I found out that RealDownloader is alsò an anti-Virus Software.
... Seems RealPlayer has some Strategists in Service...
So Yesterday I relatively wasted a lot of time.
Today I went to some PROGRAM for Removal, but the name was TRICKY; RealDownloader Removal Tool. But it doens't just removes the RealDownloader button, it pretends to remove all bad Files. You know, such Typical clean-up program.

And I thought I could just click the exit-cross when I updated realplayer to the new version such as before

I tried something new. I downloaded a Random video what it says '' download now '', and found out Preferences ( what I wanted to find, and try out. With RealPlayer it didn't worked, hopefully it does with RealDownloader ).
I thought '' ahh, there I see three different options, which of 1 or TWO are good. '' So I did it [ Don't show (Download is only accessible from right-click > http://www.veindir.com/upload/realdownloader_1.png) ], and it still keeps there when I slide over the Video!!! ( I clicked ' ok '. that has to be said )
I restarted my Computer, but it keeps.

So I already un-installed RealPlayer and all of its Components except RealDownloader ( I removed it from the Recycle Bin. It's still pivvitted on the Video's. I tried to find it at Programs and Components at the Control Panel, but it wasn't there. I did this Yesterday. )

Then I wanted to try a new Plan. '' What If I Install RealPlayer again, and this time click on options, and disable the ' Download this Video Button ' ( I updated it with enabled since before the update I could always click on the exit-cross and the button was gone until I wanted it to appear again ) ? Hopefully this choice overwrites the current happening. ''
But no, it doesn't.

Wow, I have tried out so many, and I couldn't all Explain it in a Logical sense.
With that, I am not Native ENGLISH, nor American, as well

I feel like the only Solution lies in the Registry. I have already solved ' the trouble of the Recycle Bin ' with it.
Only that was without these Duplicated names ' RealDownloader '. by the way, Registery=Dangerous. They say.

I will show you when RealDownloader was good, and that RealDownloader now, is bad.

The good one: http://static.www.real.com/sites/all/themes/realplayer/img/carousel-img_download.png

Why good?: Because you have this exit-cross at the top right of the button.

The bad one: http://www.real.com.au/image/rp003/free/image_download.jpg

Why bad?: Because the exit-cross at the top right of the button is gone and the RealPlayer team left you with the mess.

Okáy... it was lots of Typing again, as usually.

Thank you in advance ( I LEARNED from the English lessons at High-School to say this )

ow, the problem is aleatory solved

Saw the RealDownloader quick-launch button when clicking ' Start ' at the left bottom corner.

did right-click, Properties. Saw where the file was located.

Computer/C:/Program Files/RealNetworks/RealDownloader.

Tried to Delete the whole map but didn't worked, received error message like '' a Component of this program still active, first quit it '' ( but there wasn't anything active of it ). Found unin.exe in the map, which I thought was uninstal.exe
And I was right. Clicked on it, and un-installed has the mess.

Solve : LPJ Slideshow?

Answer»

I am trying to create a slideshow using LPJ Slideshow. This was free but is no longer available and thus no support is available.
I have all the information that was available at the time of downloading but whilst it states that the "Caption" facility is available,
nowhere is it detailed how to actually insert the photograph captions.
Has anyone else used this particular software and can EXPLAIN how to get captions onto the photograhs ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It SOUNDS LIKE you are trying to use software that had a LIMITED user policy. If the software had a trial period and that trial period has ended then it would be clear that said software is no longer usable to the full extent unless you pay for it.

As we don't 'hack' software I FAIL to see what use we can be.LPJ Slideshow is "freeware" and is thus not subject to any payment, time restriction or feature restriction.
It was created by a Dane named Lars P Jeppeson and was freely available at http://hjem.get2net.dk/lpj/
Donations only were invited and any fee payable was only if distributed.

As stated previously, for some unknown reason this web site appears not to be available now.

When I first found the site and downloaded the programme in May 2005 it had a very active forum section.
Unfortunately, at that time I had not tried to create a sliseshow and thus not aware of my "captions" issue.
Probably I did not download 100% of the instructions.

Sorry I did not explain myself clearly in my original question. You could try re-downloading from here

Solve : New problem with new machine?

Answer»

In my NEW machine I USED a MSI motherboard which came with an onboard sound card by Creative. Part of the included software was a program called "Wave Studio", used for editing sound recordings. When I open a .wma or a .mp3 FILE into Wave Studio and later try to save it as a .wav file I get the response "Insufficient disk space". What's that all about? I can CREATE .wav files from other programs but not Wave Studio..
I am using a quad core processor @ 3.o GHz, have over 300 Gb of available disk and 4 Gb of ram. My OS is windows 7 64 bit..
I have used Wave Studio for many years with no problem, now this. My efforts to get from help from MSI or Creative have had no results.
Does this have something to do with "virtual memory" and if so how can I change it?
Thanks for looking. I am confident one of you guys will have a solution for me. Thanks again.
JIMGive us more background, Jim
Before this you used Wave Studio on a single core using Windows XP.
Is that Right?

Just on a hunch. Do you know how to get Audacity and install the MP3 thing?

The MP3 has to be done separately. Instructions on the site

Just on a hunch. Do you know how to get Audacity and install the MP3 thing?
It is FREE.

Yes, I use Audacity quite a bit. I can export from there in either mp3 or wav, no problem. I use Wave Studio as a speedy way to edit volume, pitch and length of different music pieces before I burn them to CD. Then I have to save it as an .mp3 file then convert later if I want wav. Also when I am recording I use it to adjust mike sensitivity.
I find that Audacity is really useful. Sometimes I will use it to add or subtract verses from a piece of accompaniment music. We do a lot of entertainment at different "Homes" for shut-ins mosts of which are elderly, like us, and some of the music we do is comic rendition of the original and requires some modification.
I can get along without Wave Studio but I would appreciate any help you can give me to get rid of this problem. Thanks again JIMP.S. I am going to be away from my computer the nexr several days so I will not be able to try any "cures" that you may suggest till I get it going again, JIMQuote from: Geek-9pm on November 19, 2010, 09:25:37 PM

Yes, that is correct. Now I am using Windows 7, 64 bit. JIMYour response seems tp confirm my hunch.
Wave Studio does not get along with Windows 7, 64 bit and mulch-core.
Make sure you have the XP emulation mode for the program. I am not won Windows 7 at the moment, so maybe somebody else here can guide you. I think that is the problem. As I recall, there is only other problem with memory space, but I don't remember how you fix that.
That is all I can think of.

I see somebody else is typing. OH, so my hunch was right. dig into the XP emulation thing.Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 20, 2010, 08:14:18 AM

How can you tell if someone else is typing?? And how do I check the "XP emulation mode", thing?? Quote from: jim.mar on November 19, 2010, 12:58:42 PM
When I open a .wma or a .mp3 file into Wave Studio and later try to save it as a .wav file I get the response "Insufficient disk space".

This is a known issue with Wave Studio and Windows 7.

Possible workarounds:

1. Open the wma or mp3 file in WaveStudio. Do the editing you want. Create a new empty file in WaveStudio7 (File/New) and copy the edited file into this new empty file. Now hopefully you will be able to save it.
2. Saving the file as Microsoft ADPCM is reported to work.
3. Get Audacity, which is free and reportedly works fine on Windows 7, although I am not sure if it supports all the formats that the Creative product does. Still at least it works.

Great. That works. Saving the file as "microsoft ADPCM" results in a .wav formated file. Thank you so much. JIMThank you, Salmon Trout. Both of you.

Solve : Nero 7 works where Nero 9 does not.?

Answer»

I recently assembled a new machine and installed Windows 7. I equipped it with an ASUS CD and DVD burner which came with Nero 9. My old machine had Winows XP and USED Nero 7 which worked quite WELL as I burn a lot of music CDs and DVDs. Problem, all of the CDs that I burn using Nero 9 will not play in one of my CD players. They will play in my wifes radio/CD player and my computer but not in my commercial Karaoke. Both Nero 7 and Nero 9 put out the music in CDA format regardless of whether I "add" them as WMA or Wav format products.
I am thinking of reloading Nero 7 into my new machine but the CD states that "Bundle with hardware only not for resale". Questions:
1) Does anyone know why I am having this problem?
2) Does it have anything to do with finalizing the CD?
3) Do I need to buy more plug-ins?
4) Is it legal for me to use Nero 7 in my new machine with the new burner? I can remove the program from the old machine but I want to keep the new hardware in the new machine.

I am stumped. Thanks for reading this. Appreciate any help you can give.. JIMOthers have had problems similar to what you report. But the problem is not limited to the Nero software. This can happen even with other brands of CD and DVD burning software.
Here are some things to check for; quality of the media your are using and even the type of media you use. The CD RW media can fail more often and does not work in some consumer CD players. And yes, this CD must be finalized for use in a common consumer type CD player.
Also, you may want to check what is the default writing speed on your PROGRAMS. A good burner and good media should have no trouble with 16 X. But you may have to drop down to a lower burn speed to see if that helps any.
As for the Nero copyright infringement question, Nero will allow you to use almost any version of their software for least 30 days on a trial basis. You are not violating the copyright if you only use it for 30 days.

If at any time you have purchased the full version of Nero, you should be entitled to use any other version that's lower down on the list. Normally, you would only install one copy of Nero on one of your computers.
But if you're the only person that uses your computer's, and you never use them at the same time, or if you never use Nero at the same time on two computers, you would not be violating the copyright law by having a backup installation on one of your computers.

And I don't think you would have any reason to be using Nero on two machines at the same time and burning CDs at the same time, unless you're doing some kind of commercial work. In which case, if you were a commercial user, you would probably have better equipment and you would have all the licenses you need to MAKE as many copies of anything you need if you're in the business of making copies legally for other commercial entities.
In the USA, having two installations of software by one individual in his own home or office where he is the only user is not a violation of copyright law. Unless he uses both at the same time.

Thank you. That clears up some other questions that I have been pondering. As to the burners I think I have the answer, the burners themselves are different. After I read your response, I uninstalled Nero 9 then did a "drag and drop" on a file consisting of both .wav files and .wma files, in both machines, also using two different CD media. (four discs total). The two that I burned on my old machine worked fine in my Karaoke while the two that I burned on the new machine did not...although they all work great in other CD players. The tolerance combination of my Karaoke machine and my new burner must be just slightly out of bounds with each other..
I think that it is too late to get a refund or return from NewEgg, assuming they would even consider a refund under the circumstances, so I will just swap burners and change it LATER....

Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it. JIMYou are very welcome.

Solve : Paint.NET v3.5.6 released?

Answer»

Paint.NET v3.5.6 - Released on November 18th, 2010

Paint.NET is free IMAGE and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, SPECIAL EFFECTS, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.

This update fixes several issues related to copy-paste, improves performance and quality for a few ADJUSTMENTS, and fixes a data loss bug.

* When pasting an image, Paint.NET will be smarter about ensuring it is placed within the area that has been scrolled/zoomed to.
* Improved the performance and quality of the Curves and Hue/Saturation adjustments.
* Some minor improvements to memory USAGE, which should help out a few scenarios on 32-bit systems.
* Fixed: If a JPEG was loaded that had an embedded ICC profile, and was then saved as an 8-bit or 24-bit PNG, then the resulting file would be corrupt (32-bit PNG worked fine though).
* Fixed: 16-bit TGAs no longer load with the red and blue channels swapped.
* Fixed: Copy-paste from a Remote Desktop session will no longer be 'shifted' by 3 pixels.
* Fixed: Copy-paste from Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome should preserve alpha/transparency.
* Fixed: Copying from Paint.NET and pasting into Windows Live Writer should now work.
* Fixed: Taking a full-screen screenshot with Print Screen on a multimonitor system, where those monitors don't form a simple rectangle, will now fill the 'gap area' with transparent instead of black. (Example: two monitors of the same size, one of which is rotated by 90 degrees)
* Fixed: If Paint.NET is opened without specifying an image to open, and then the default image is modified and saved, then Paint.NET will no longer close it upon opening another one. This was causing data loss if that default image had layers, and was then saved in a format that did not support layers (anything other than .PDN).
* Fixed: Some systems were showing 'red X' thumbnails for .PDN files in Windows Explorer, instead of the real thumbnail.
* Fixed: The EXIF "Creation Software" saved along with images is no longer localized. This prevents certain languages from seeing "Paint.NET ?? v3.5.6" in the image properties (metadata).

Solve : Issue with a Microsoft Publisher document?

Answer»

This post is more in line with a request for "why does this happen this way" event than trying to solve something. I am posting on behalf of my wife that has had this event occur. Some preliminaries:
1.The .pub document was CREATED quite some time AGO on a desktop HP using a version of Microsoft publisher and the windows ME operating system.
2.She desired to transfer the document from the HP to a Cisnet desktop that has the same Microsoft publisher version plus a more recent version installed on it.Computer O/S= windows xp media centre.
3.She successfully installed the document to a USB flash drive on the HP (actually due to the issue 3 different flash drives were tried).
4.When she brings the flash drive to the Cisnet the document is seen in an icon but when an attempt is made to open (view) it the message is "file unknown", Same on 3 different flash drives.
5.However when the document is burned to a floppy (internal drive) on the HP and brought over to the floppy (external usb) on the Cisnet it is seen and can be opened and read.
So the question is why does this happen? If i need to provide more information please ask.truenorthSounds to me from the icon description she merely copied a shortcut to the file...
Next time have her open the document and from the File Menu choose Save As.patio, Thanks for the reply. She (on the HP) did do a save as and directed it to drive J which was the flash drive. In both cases the document was open on the HP when the save as function was used to all 3 flash drives and the only difference was when it was saved to the floppy the appropriate A drive was selected. So it appears not to be that.As far as she can recollect other than the changed destination all other factors were identical.truenorthOnly other thing i can think is try it with the flash drive in a rear port. Are the flash drives FAT or NTFS, and did she use the Safely Remove dialog?
patio, She will try that next time she has the Cisnet on and i will report.
Salmon Trout , Yes she did use the safely remove in all cases. Now re the file format of the flash drives. I had originally (before posting) asked her that question. The answer i got was what??? . However here is where i go into an over my head situation--I would believe that the win ME computer file system is most likely FAT32 and the XP i suppose could be either. I was of the belief that NTFS was backward compatible whereas FAT32 is not forward compatible. Just to further complicate that possibility is that she has used these same flash drives to transfer other data (not .pub files) from the HP to the same Cisnet without issue. In fact some of those files are still on the flash drives and can be opened and read. So the issue seems (to me at least) to be involving the .pub file format on flash drives. But of course i really don't know that to be the case.I know i mentioned the file format of the computers HDD and not the flash drives. But given their previous use with other files i cannot see how that could be a FACTOR as they have not been reformatted ever. truenorth
P.S.Lest it be concidered a contributing factor all 3 flash drives are of a different mfg.QUOTE from: truenorth on January 02, 2013, 08:01:40 AM

Multiple versions of Publisher on the same machine? How does it know which version to use?

Multiple versions of Publisher on the same machine? How does it know which version to use?

Nice catch ! !...Yes i think so too (and wondered why she has that). I shall ask and find out why and how if at all she defines which one is accessed?
Your not going to like this ==her answer was "how would i know". OK so i want to remain in the mutually beneficial relationship we have had for over 50 years. So you will appreciate my reluctance to prod any more in that direction. However i would point out that even under those circumstances the ability to install/transfer/access/read the data is without issue if it arrives on a floppy. So i don't see how that could be an issue re flash drives and not a floppy. By the way the same version 2002 is on both computers and 2007 is additionally on the Cisnet. To the question why have both on the Cisnet the answer is= because i am concerned that there are functions that are available on the 2002 that are not available on the 2007 (however at this point when queried she is NOT aware of any). I would have a hard time trying to persuade her to remove the 2002 version from the Cisnet because there is validity to that argument from my personal knowledge. I continue to use a very early version of Easy CD creator from Roxio because it contains a component (which i use often) that is not a component of all the later versions. truenorthI can understand hanging ONTO old valued versions but there can be issues when different versions of the same software are installed side by side. In fact many programs check for earlier versions, including (I thought) MS Office and its components.

Solve : Firefox copy files - no installation?

Answer»

I just have a quick question. I was going to use the chat, but noticed that it's gone. Anyway, I am doing a custom windows 7 installation image and would like to include firefox as a preinstalled app. My question is: Can the firefox files simply be COPIED without installing and still work? I know some programs will work fine if the files are copied and others need to be installed first.http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
The files can be copied and run from a folder (designed for USB sticks, but works fine on hard drive also). Profile data is saved in a subdirectory of the FirefoxPortable folder as well.

I think the nightly builds also have zip packages (they're unstable of course). Profile data saves to %appdata% normally if I remember rightly. You want to use MozBack INSTEAD of the method above...
Backs up your Profile...settings bookmarks...etc...everything you need...and can migrate into a fresh install of FFox which is the way to go...Quote from: patio on December 29, 2012, 05:05:28 PM

I thought MozBack was for profile data, not the app itself. I interpreted the OP's question as how to preinstall firefox on the computer. Is that a wrong interpretation?Yes, I was talking about the app itself, not the profile. Would using the portable version have any limitations? I'd rather use the full version if it works without being installed. I think I might just test it on a comp without firefox and see what happens. It's pretty fully featured, a few things though are by default disabled (like disk cache), so you may not like that...

That may be possible. I was thinking about making a reg file and then IMPORTING into the registry on the installation disk, but I was unsure if it would simply be HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Firefox or if some other unknown entries would also have to be included.

I finally settled on just running the installer for firefox with a batch file that automatically executes on first boot after setup. I used the -ms parameter so it does a silent install of firefox.Do some reading on "unattended install" setup tools...
May help what you need in future...As far as I can tell, Firefox stores very little data in the registry. Most of the "non-portable" data, such as profiles, is stored in %APPDATA%, which is what GET's "portablized" by a portable installation. I believe this is taken care of by the portable launcher.Portable or not the App still needs to be installed...

Solve : Cant copy Apple Video DVD?

Answer»

I was asked by a friend to copy a wedding DVD. It was produced on an Apple. I've TRIED using Image Burn and Nero and although' it looks like it has copied the DVD when it is loaded into the player it only shows the menu. I THOUGHT it was down to My DVD player but the results are the same on my friends machine which plays the original. Any ideas?

Art If it was created on an Apple you will need Apple to Windows file conversion software...Thanks Patio.

Any names to look for?

ArtBest way to approach this would be to find out what app he created it with...then go from there.
There are many FREE apps that will do this...2 sources i use are Softpedia and majorgeeks...

But it would still be best to know what app was used.

Best of Luck...and Welcome to CH ! !I found some free software called Prism Video CONVERTER which did the trick.

Hello. I am wondering if anyone knows of any way to have two cursors on screen at once, directed by two different mouses. I need them.

Thanks!Unless there's some 3RD party APP that can accomplish. Normally two pointing devices just control the single CURSOR. Like on a laptop with an external mouse and the TOUCHPAD active, for example.

Solve : Burning a game.?

Answer»

So, I have a question or 2 about burning a game.

Either my dog or my NEPHEW broke my Halo. I have the files on my computer and I still have the case with the serial, but the ACTUAL disc is broken. Therefore I want to take the files and burn them to a cd so I can actually play the game via the disc.

This is legal right since Im not trying to use it to sell but so I can continue to play my game since I did buy it in the first place and I have a legit serial that I got from the game.

Anyway, what all should/would I need to burn to the CD. Cause I think I want to burn everything to the CD and then uninstall the game, then reinstall it and use the disc fine.

What would be the checklist to make sure I have on the cd?To do this, you would need to bypass the COPY protection check that the program will likely do to see if the original CD is inserted. We cannot help you do this. Please don't ask again.

If you need a replacement CD, you MIGHT be able to get one from the publisher (for a fee), eBay, or the bargain bin at your local SOFTWARE retailer.Thread locked.

Solve : Create a virtual desktop??

Answer»

Can you create a virtual desktop? Now I mean like if you had a other monitor, so with a button (like win key+1/2) you can change to a different desktop, but the programs in the "hidden" desktop are still running.

Why I ask is because my second monitor broke and I'm USED to a have games on one, and my work on my other one. I think there are programs out there, but I don't know what programs are good and what are completely junk that works with Win7, any advice would be good.I'm going to mention virtual desktop software I just found via Google search; I have not used it. It's called WindowsPager and you can get some INFO and download it from http://www.windows7.cc/windows-7-software/windows-7-virtual-desktop-manager/. I suggest you read the user comments at the lower part of that web page; some comments are good, some are bad. And, at least two alternative programs are mentioned in those comments.

If you try WindowsPager, please let us know how you like it. Thats not really the thing I was looking for, it was way to clumsy and didn't serve the purposes of a second monitor that I was looking for.

Thanks for replaying tho.Desktops

Solve : Windows wont boot completely at home?

Answer»

Help! Windows won't boot completely at home, but works OK in computer repair shop. This is really crazy, took it to computer repair and they ran complete diagnostics on it and it checked out fine, but at home it starts BOOTING windows then screen goes blank and just sits there. Could it be my power cord? No, not likely.
Maybe SOMETHING came loose when you took it home. Hard to say.

But first, some questions.
In what part of the world do you live?
Is this a Laptop?
Which operations system do you have?
Did the repair shop use a different monitor?
Have you called the repair ship again?

well guess what? The mystery is solved! I went back to the repair shop with all my connections and my monitor, and discovered that my monitor was DYING and dead. Even though I had connected to another monitor (my TV), it was still not loading windows at home. So now I am happy with a new monitor and rolling ALONG! Moral of story is to take all your cables and monitors with you to have checked.

Thanks!

Solve : Permissions, permissions.?

Answer»

I found an old HHD in the closet and I WANTED to find out what was on it so I bought an IDE/USB interface thingy from eBay and it works very well. I was very surprised.

I can now see what is on the HDD using my laptop.

The problem is that when ever I TRY to open a folder or FILE I get a message saying "Access denied -you do not have permission to open this file" or something similar.

I have gone into the the security settings for the folders and I can change them to ALLOW me access but it's kinda slow and there are about 200 folders and over 1000 files.

Is there any WAY I can change the permissions to allow me access to everything without having to do each folder and file individually?

Thanks in advance.

Solve : Excel - Don't allow saves on sheet 2 but can save changes on sheet 1?

Answer»

I have a little calculator of sorts that hides rows and information based on ENTRIES in CELLS A1 and B1 on sheet 2. Problem is things get messed up when another user returns to this sheet and cannot see data previously entered in these 2 cells due to conditional formatting which hides needed rows. If those 2 cells would always revert to zero when saving or going to another sheet all will be great. I'm not an expert so please go easy on the lingo.

What I'm doing with the spread sheet is to figure our serial numbering and labeling requirements will is based on the factory location and product QTY required. Sheet one is where the serial numbers are entered by the used based on sheet 2 selections (which factory and how many widgets required.)
This one still has us stumped so I'll clarify my issue. I have a 2 sheet excel file; sheet 1 users may make perm CHANGES on but sheet two only temp changes may be made. Ideally when a user leaves sheet 2 anytime their changes (like a check box that was checked or the qty of a product desired) return to their original values (unchecked or 0.)

Hopeful. J

Isn't Google Desktop DISCONTINUED? Regardless, is outlook's built-in search not sufficient for you? I'm pretty sure that windows search (included in windows 7, downloadable for XP) can index and search outlook emails.
Google Desktop is discontinued.
The inbuilt search isn't fast enough. I'm talking about searching from about 12000 emails. Back with the Google desktop, it took only seconds to find the right email since it INDEXED all content too. But since Google Index doesn't catch up or detect Outlook 15 / 2013, I'm in a mess.

I've tried Copernick Desktop search but it didn't detect Office 15 neither.

Given how new office 2013 is, it might be a while before Copernic desktop has support for it. I doubt Google Desktop ever will. Have you tried Windows Search at all?

Another choice might be to tell outlook to use compatibility with older file formats (if there even is such an option, i don't know what options outlook 2013 has)

Solve : Excel 2010, determine the contents of a Sheet tab to use in a formula.?

Answer»

I am using Excel 2010 in Windows 7. Is there a way to determine the name of the current sheet as it appears on the tab from a function? For instance, if I have a sheet named "Month 2", I want to use that 2 in the "=Month()" function to indicate that it is February. I am designing a Workbook for users for an entire year, 13 Sheets. The 1st sheet is a cover sheet Containing among other stuff the active year. The remainder 12 sheets CONTAINS the 12 months. I don't want user interaction to fill the month on each sheet. Is this possible? I know the other option is to put a formula that will differ from sheet to sheet. Still, it will be great if there is such a function. I have GONE through all existing functions, and if it is there I've missed it.

PS. There might be a way in VB, but I don't want to use macros.

PS. There might be a way in VB, but I don't want to use macros.
Then, I believe your objective is not possible.

Basically, you want to automate the naming of sheets. I believe developing a macro is the only way to do this. Functions alone can not do this. Thank you for your response Soybean. Sorry for an unclear explanation. However my objective is possible. I found the solution by using:
=CELL("filename",D1) as a small part of a BIGGER formula.
The sheets are already named "Month 1" to "Month 12", I extract the "1" for January, the "2" of "Month 2" for February, and so on.

haha

they can be used to remove viruses but...

A:) you need to know what you are doing, and
B:) it takes a large investment of time and effort to use it for that, as well as knowing what you are doing.

You can't just "learn how to use Sysinternals tools" (I better point out that I doubt you are going to be using contig or handle to remove viruses, it's mostly procexp's ability to suspend processes that comes in handy here) you are going to need to learn how to use them to remove viruses; the general method would be to first identify all the "bad" processes, suspend them ALL, then kill them all. After that, you delete their files. So we need several steps-

First, you need to know how to identify unwelcome processes. Do you truly think anybody can do this? Some people get shaky knees when people mention exe files. Most don't know the first thing about them, nor which ones are included with windows and which ones are part of drivers and software packages, it's silly to expect them to know how to identify malware processes, especially since they could easily piggyback on other processes like winlogon anyway, in which case they would also need to know how to use the DLL view and be able to know which processes have loaded "bad" dlls so that they can be forced to unload said Dlls, and then you'll need to suspend that thread because chances are the virus simply inject a piece of code into the host process to reload the dll when it recieves it's DLL_DETACH message from windows via dllmain().

Meanwhile, you can avoid almost all of this hassle by simply running malwarebytes, or even better, use a background AV. Additionally, you assume that a PC's owner is the only person to use a machine. This is often not the case. Do you truly expect that people should learn how to use procexp and simply let their children/grandchildren roam free on the internet? using process explorer to remove a nasty infection can often take hours. Should they teach their kids/grandkids/grandparents how to use process explorer? Seems like a huge waste of everybody's time, all the grandparent wants to do is play some bejeweled and they're being lectured on how to identify malicious processes. I thought that was the freaking job of a AV program? It is. Quote from: Linux711 on October 19, 2010, 12:41:48 PM

I keep getting smacked in the face, i don't why, but i know how to use a band-aidI think he's talking about prevention and sandboxing. Of course, the only way you can ensure your computer is 100% secure would be to disconnect it from any outside (the internet / network) or new sources (transfering data between). The firewall is your best defensive against getting anything on the system, you can do some extra things like sandboxing applications so they don't affect another, disabling auto-run, etc, but the virus scanner is still an important tool required for today's computering.

Estimates suggest that up to 40% of personal computers are infected with some form of malware program (lots of people don't know or even ignore it, learning to live with the issue). 90% will have had contact with adware or spyware in it's lifetime. Still no security is still better than installing a fake antivirus program, over 30 million are infected by trojan injected 'security' software.

I recommend getting a trusted Virus scanner / Firewall, even if your just playing one solitaire game all day long and not going to risky sites. It's a pretty good investment for your computer's health.

Solve : Malware Bytes... antivirus????

Answer»

When I got my new computer I purchased Malwarebytes (NOT the free version). I'm not sure if this also provides antivirus protection. Does anyone know for sure? If it does not, can you recommend a free antivirus program compatible with MWB?MalwareBytes is not a full fledged anti virus app. It should be used in conjunction with one. There are many free good options including Avira, Avast, Nod, etc. You may also want to look at paid AV's and decide which is best for you.In addition to Allan's comments. You certainly have not made a bad decision to have and use Malwarebytes on a regular basis in addition to any virus software you might use. Today i performed a routine scan with Malwarebytes on a computer that is running a free version of Avast anti-virus with all the latest virus definitions and in spite of that malwarebytes found 4 items not found by Avast. In addition an anti virus program should be installed to be running constantly when the computer is on so as to detect any malicious item before it can get on the computer. Malwarebytes can only be RUN at a user demand so it is not in a position to prevent an infection. Only to detect and remove it after the fact.truenorthQuote from: truenorth on February 17, 2013, 05:50:03 PM

Regardless of whether it's the free or Pro version, MWB is NOT a replacement for a full anti-virus suite. It even says so on their website and on their forums (in responses from staff, not regular users).

Quote
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not meant to be a replacement for antivirus software. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a complementary but essential program which detects and removes zero-day malware and "Malware in the Wild". This includes malicious programs and files, such as viruses, worms, trojans, rootkits, dialers, spyware, and rogue APPLICATIONS that many antivirus programs do not detect or cannot fully remove. It is important to note that Malwarebytes Anti-Malware works well and should run alongside antivirus software without conflicts. In some rare instances, exclusions may NEED to be set for your specific antivirus product to achieve the best possible system performance.

The differences between free and Pro:
1. No real-time protection in free version.
2. No zero-day threat protection in free version.
3. No website protection in free version.
4. No automatic updates in free version.
5. No "fast" flash drive scans in free version.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/fordee9r, I appreciate the distinction of performance that you have pointed out. I must confess i only use the free version so i assumed (often not the best thing to do) that the paid version behaved in the same manner. I do AGREE with the others that urge the install of an anti virus program as well. The critical point in that regard is to NEVER run 2 anti virus programs at the same time. truenorth

Thank you all in advance for helping!!!
iacobusA BIOS flash will not wipe the password on a laptop...and may render it un-bootable at all if it's the incorrect flash.
For BIOS password recovery on laptops it NEEDS to be taken to a Toshiba Service Center to retrieve/reset the password.
Be prepared to show proof of ownership as they will ask for it.Thank you patio.

If ANYONE know the latest BIOS version for this Toshiba Satellite A200-223 or a good modified, I would be thankful

Meanwhile, I'll try to contact Toshiba for technical support. One thing to try is to remove the CMOS battery for about 5 - 10 mins and see if this will reset your bios. Quote from: cwhartley on January 17, 2013, 07:09:36 AM

This will do nothing to the password on a laptop...it's stored in a different ROM.
This is by design.

Solve : Microsoft Office 2013?

Answer»

Hi,

If i save my work by default in office 2013, can it be opened with 2010 or 2007 (another computer)?
Or can 2007 & 2010 opened with 2013?

Thank you.No, EXCEPT as noted herein. The default format for Office 2013 is Dog Food.
From Office 2007 onward it should be the same. Older Office suites won't read the MS XML format, which has been called Dog Food. Which is very kind.
For reference:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/08/15/office_2013_strict_open_xml/

It's also worth pointing out that you can use file -> "save as" to use a different format or certain compatibility options. This can also let you save a, for example, word 2000 or 2003 document, or RTF, plain text, PDF, etc.
Thank you for the info, both of you.I messed about with this a bit immediately after installing Office 2013; if memory serves, Without Changing any options, the resulting Save File opened just fine in Office 2007.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 18, 2013, 12:49:58 AM

Solve : Windows 7 cpu gadget not displaying percent of usage?

Answer»

Im running windows 7 sp1 6gb ram core i3 2350m .

I been using the black glass cpu meter and recently after restarting my pc the percent on ram and cpu is blank but it still works just no percent usage. I uninstalled it and reinstall but still not working.

All other GADGETS work.

ThanksMS dropped support for all their gadgets awhile back due to security concerns...
You may want to try a 3rd party app for your needs...
A quick search yielded a bunch of OPTIONS...I've used the regular CPU Meter gadget for months. I presume this is not the same as your "black glass cpu meter". I've had no ISSUES with it. However, we do now need to weigh using gadgets VS. using a 3rd party app due to the security issue patio mentioned. QUOTE from: soybean on February 15, 2013, 07:50:18 PM

The regular cpu meter works and shows the percent, but the black glass cpu meter aint showing it. its post to us the same coding as the regular cpu meter. Black cpu meterIf it's not working replace it...

I copy the en-US folder from the cpu gadget that windows 7 has and pasted it in the black glass cpu meter folder over writing the en-US folder and it has the percent readings now, it just the percent font isnt the same that the black glass meter had, but its good enough.

I have done some tests, and subsequently some RESEARCH. 7zip does not HANDLE multipart zip files created by other compression utilities including WinZip. I apologise for misleading people by saying anything different.
Thank you for your research and your reporting.

I actually found a source forge forum and then spent 15 minutes trying to register. When I finally found it and entered my information, I never got a confirmation email. So I emailed them, explaining the multi part archive problem and the registration issues.

I never got a response. But thank you again, for yours. I was beginning to feel like the kid who knows the next door neighbor is an alien, but nobody will believe me. Good 'digging' on your part. I'm disappointed I never found the information myself. Quote from: patio on February 17, 2013, 06:02:20 AM
Although i don't have any native ZIPPED files to test on you may want to try WinZip...as i said it's worth a shot.

WinRAR would be another alternative to try as well.
Both have a Free/trial version.
As I already mentioned, I have, ultimately, managed to extract the files using the trial version of WinRar. I have been told that the trial version of WinZip only lasts for so long before it ceases to work, and I assume the same thing about WinRar. I was merely looking for a free alternative I could suggest, and I assumed 7Zip was it. Lesson learned, and thanks for posting. I strongly suspect that the WinZip and WinRAR multipart archive formats are exclusive to them, and are going to stay that way, for fairly obvious commercial reasons.
WinRAR's "evaluation period" never actually runs out.

7-Zip- the program- is perhaps the Archiving program I dislike the most. I consider it more a "sample" of how to use the 7-zip libraries, rather than a application in and of itself- and for that purpose it works well.

Personally I use PowerArchiver, which has worked quite well for me. Not free anymore, though. (It has no TROUBLE opening multi-part zip and RAR files from WinRAR and WinZip).

This thread is long with text and short with understanding.
We NEED a clear demonstration of how to ZIP and nUNZIP.
Could a clever video help?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTz_HOqhbW8t help?

Does that help?
Correct on WinRar...it just shows nag screens without registrgation...
WinZip i'm not sure of but the last time i took it around the block i believe it stops approx. 1/2 of the features of the Full ver.
At any rate glad you found a solution .

Solve : not enough memory in EXCEL?

Answer»

I have an EXCEL workbook that I have been using for years. When doing some editing today on a sheet the 'not enough memory' message came up. I tried to delete some sheets and charts no longer needed but could not do that. This computer has Windows 98 and I am using EXCEL2000This may help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313275Thank you soybean. It explains the limits in Excel and I appear to have exceeded ONE of these limits. I had got over the problem temporarily by deleting some charts. However, today when I created a new chart, links to the Sheets disappeared and I cannot find them. It looks as though today's edit is lost and I will have to go back to the .bak version. I will then implement what is advised in that very useful link you PROVIDED. I have made some progress since the LAST post. I used in Edit the Delete Sheet to remove some additional charts. The Sheets were still not on the bar so I closed the file and then opened it again, presuming that process would clean up the memory and other activities. That worked. So I now have a worksheet with the updated editing, and knowledge of how to prevent the problem re-occurring. Thanks, soybean."Not enough memory" has cropped up again in this Excel 2000 workbook. I started to Move some of the Sheets to another workbook, as I did last time. However, I tried to resume that process today but when I loaded the spreadsheet the message came up, a wineglass appeared and the spreadsheet did not load. I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305498 and carried out the procedure to refresh Office as this was supposed to fix the memory problem. It did not for my Windows 98SE SYSTEM and Excel 2000.

Solve : Hotmail problem...?

Answer» ... which I bring up here because I don't think the problem is with Hotmail. The problem exists on my VISTA Toshiba laptop, but not on my ACER laptop or my desktop.

I open Hotmail and go to my INBOX. Then, after opening a message, it displays for a moment, then automatically takes me back to the INBOX. After one or two more tries, it stays on the message.

I've performed malware scans, used CCLEANER, and defragged. The problem persists. I've had the problem for months, but just treated it as an annoyance, as the laptop isn't the PRIMARY used COMPUTER. But after digging a bit, and I couldn't find the cause, I find myself curious.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Tried more than one browser?truenorthChecked mouse/touchpad settings ? ?Thanks guys. Will check the pad settings - that may be it.

Solve : Charts in Excel 2007 dissapears?

Answer»

Hi Everyone
I have come across a strange issue on a pc running Excel 2007.
A spreadsheet is created on a pc using Excel 2010 - and withing the workbook are charts (their DATA is within the same sheet as the chart) it then gets saved onto a flash drive and then opened on a pc running Excel 2007. When opening the file in 2007 all the data is there but the charts are gone. There are just empty spaces where the charts were.
Could it be a compatibility issue between 2007 and 2010. I have tried it on another pc, also running 2010 and everything is there, charts included.

Please note, I have checked for viruses and had a look for any settings in 2007 that might disable charts.

Thanks in advanceDoes Excel 2010 has an option under the Save As command to save as Excel 2007? I realize it may not since the both USE the .xlsx file format, as opposed to the older (Excel 2003 and prior) .xls format. 2010 Does not give a 2007 save format. But we have tried saving it as a .xls (2003 and prior) then opening it with the 2007 - but the charts are STILL missing. I'm thinking it could be a compatibility issue but I cant load 2010 as its a company pc.
So I'm wondering if there is another work around for this.
ThanksHave you installed the MS Compatability PACK? If not, try this link. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3Quote from: cwhartley on January 17, 2013, 07:03:49 AM

Have you installed the MS Compatability Pack? If not, try this link. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3
The Compatability Pack is not APPLICABLE to this situation. It is for users of older versions of Office (2003, XP, 2000) who want to be able to open files created on later versions (2007, 2010, 2013) versions of Office. Since the two versions of Office involved here are Office 2007 and Office 2010, the Compatability Pack does not apply.

Edit: cwhartley, upon reading lau's 2nd post again, where he mentioned Office 2003, I see why you suggested installing the Compatability Pack but, again, he does not have an earlier version of Office, so it does not fit the situation here.

lau, if you could attach an Excel 2010 file (could be fictitious data) containing a chart to a forum post, I could try opening it in my Excel 2007. This could provide some confirmation of whether this apparent incompatibility is not just an issue with your particular edition of Office 2007. HI Everyone

Thanks for the replies - but the strangest thing happend the user did something (she doesn't know what) and now all of a sudden its working. All the charts are shown when opening the file on her pc.
I wish I knew what she did.

P.S - I'm a girl

The only choice is .WMV.Winamp should play WMV files. What happens when you try to open your movie with Winamp?did you publish the movie or is it just the save file? If you MAKE winamp your default it should use winamp automatically. Im just posting to make sure you did it right. listen to broni. hes smarter than me.Quote

Not...i'm sorry but not too familiar with the program.... i don't know how to identify what format is my windows movie maker and if i open the file with winamp, file is there but no time duration. so when i click play nothing opens in winamp video. this is what i did in my movie maker.. i import pictures and audio to make it a play like movie and when i save it.. a movie maker file icon is saved... i WANT to send it through e-mail but the file is not recognized ...how is that.. yeah it really sounds like its not published...
when you try to save it click File>Save Movie File instead of Save Project.Quote from: Broni on November 27, 2007, 09:31:25 PM

In Windows Movie Maker, you have an option to save your project as ".avi" file, which is recognized by most movie players.

when i tried to save my project, there is only 1 option in "save as type" = Windows Movie Maker Project (.MSWMM) This is what i wnna know... how can i send movie maker project to email bec when i send it thru email, it says "the project contains source files that are missing or that have been modified or import. Your project cannot be saved as a movie until the source files have been located or deleted from the project". Wow I’ve got it… what I did is I save the movie file.. then the save movie wizard APPEARS….and I choose “E-mail (save and send your movie as an email attachment by using you default e-mail program) after saving the movie… there appears two options (1) play the movie (2) save a copy of my movie on my computer… I choose the second option.. and there again appears a save as type “Windows Media video files (.WMV). Then check the location where I saved the file … A winamp icon is there… now I can watch it in my winamp… thank you so much for your effort and time…. I'm glad, it worked out No i have not used before it or no idea. I am using another one. But i also would like to know how to convert as you want. So if anyone know please share with all. Because it helps to convert movies. When we make a movie and want to play on our PC or mobile for this it should convert for this.

Solve : windows 7 and 8 on same computer?

Answer»

I am thinking of buying an Acer travelmate P253 with both windows 7 and 8 loaded on the laptop. When I look for reviews of this computer on the UK site it says it is a P253-M with only windows 8 installed.

I live in Australia and this computer comes up with both systems loaded on a P253 (no M after the number) Can I trust this is genuine from the manufacturers? If a computer is refurbished how would you know by going into the SYSTEM, would you be able to tell?

thanks
Leigh

Most systems are sold with a single OS licensed. However for a period of time back in the days of Windows Vista, some systems were being sold with 2 keys on the Microsoft Labels for those who wanted to run Windows XP instead of Vista. Legally you can only run one of the OS, and not both.

I haven't seen keys for customer operating system choices yet for Windows 7 or 8 on the genuine microsoft key labels. Microsoft is still pretty firm with forcing PEOPLE to Windows 8 and leaving Windows 7 in the dust for new systems as well as they are offering Windows 8 at a fraction of the cost of Windows 7 to try to get people to go with Windows 8 vs 7. I keep seeing limited time offer deals for $40 for Windows 8 because Microsoft has been having a hard time selling the product.I dont know of any retailers that will sell/ship a PC with dual boot OS's...
But your best bet would be to buy a Win7 PC that includes the Free Upgrade to Win8...

It may be different in Australia though...very redundant portion of an online game on facebook. I dont have 2 hrs a day to burn up the (energy) in dedundant fighting in the game to convert it to other FORMS of VALUE within the game so I have a batch file that performs a ping Huuuuhhh ? ?
