Solve : Game locks up?

Answer»

Ok i will try to explain all this in one go. i have microsoft flight sim 2004 just installed, The problem been is that after so long say 1, 2 mins it just locks up and i have to restart my computer from the restart button. In this game, it gives you a diagnostic tool wich allows you to boot the game in safe mode and play it, to see if there is a hardware FAULT, I did this and it didnt freeze or hang. But as soon i i start it the proper way its BACK to it hanging and freezing. So this is suggesting that i have a hardware fault. What does anyone think can be the problem, I run other games and DONT have this problem, my card is a Geforce Fx 5900 and i have all the latest driver and direct x installed. My OS Is XP Home with service pack 2 and i have 512 ddr Amd 2500 processer.Have you EVER been able to play the game in normal mode? Have you been keeping up wiht your Windows Updates? Have you tried updating your video card and sound card drivers?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hold up there... Besides those questions, new thought... I want you to run a test from Microsoft for me... Here is the link... http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/flightsimulator.aspx#sysreqs ... Scroll down to system REQUIREMENTS... You should see a button for the Windows XP Game Advisor... Click on that so it can run the test, and tell me the results...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have Ran the program and the test comes back that my computer is far better then the minimum Required. Yes i installed latest GRAPHIC card, But not sound card driver as im not sure wich one i need. i used the one on the disc wich is from year 2004. my Card is a Sound Blaster Audigy 2, 24bit advanced HD 192khz/106db SNR
do you know where i can get the latest one for this card. Appreciate the help.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303032

http://list.driverguide.com/list/index.htmlQuote

So this is suggesting that i have a hardware fault.

Just the opposite, if the game runs in it's safe mode then I suggest there is no hardware fault.
Sorting out your sound drivers would be a good place to start.

Solve : Opera question?

Answer»

Im using the Opera 9.0 browser and I was looking in the preferences and I can make it so the browser is identified as IE. Does that mean that if say I download the google bar then I would get the google bar in Opera?Give it a try and see. I personally avoid ALL toolbars but if you like 'em.....I avoid all toolbars myself. I just thought the google toolbar was ok. Its supposed to have the 2nd best popup stopper in the world. Or so thats what the ratings SAID after doing a google search.Let us know how you like it and keep all your PROTECTION up to date before, during and after the install. The google bar is a fantastic popup blocker based on the results of popupcheck.com. But the "Identify as Internet Explorer" option doesnt work... Ive yet to find a decent popup blocker for opera.Personally, the default Opera pop-up blocker works fine for me. However, no, unfortunately, simply choosing to identify Opera as IE does not ENABLE it to use IE-supported tools. I believe all that is for is to (supposedly) show to a web-page that you are using Internet Explorer so that it doesn't create some KIND of problem reading HTML or so that if the page has something specific to IE (think a Java applet or something) that it won't go haywire because of an un-identified browser something ALONG those lines, however, that is jsut my theory.

If you ever want an add-on for Opera, it has to made for Opera, strictly. Plug-ins aren't interchangable unless they're identified as such, and seeing as how IE and Opera work rather differently, I doubt they ever will be.

Solve : Integrating updates in MS Word 97?

Answer»

Hi, it seems that my updates in MS Word 97 do not integrate into the document. Instead they are "hanging there" as they would do if you updated a document but did not close down Word.

Therefore I now have a bunch of "updates" which are listed before the Word documents in the file.

Any idea on how to get them integrated?

Thanks.

I'm running XP Pro with service package 2, Athlon 3500+, and 1 gig memory. Not clear on what you mean by updates. Do you mean updates downloaded from Microsoft? No, I mean simple updates to a document. When you update a document an update file is created in ADDITION to the original document. When you shut down Word, the two files are combined to created an updated orginal.

This does not happen when Word is closed.

Do you CLICK on Save to save an updated file before you close it? How does Word respond?Word responds normally. However when you reopen Word, the two files are not combined. There are still the updated files listed in the directory. So, Save does not really save your updates to a file, right? If you go to TOOLS, Option, Save, what boxes do you have checked there? The boxes checked are Allow background saves and Save autorecover for 10 min.

Yes the files are updated when referenced, but the update itself is still listed as a document in the directory.A couple ideas come to mind as possible fixes for this. One is to download a freeware program called CCleaner and run it. It's a disk cleanup and limited registry cleaning tool. Uncheck the box for Yahoo toolbar; you'll see it soon after starting the CCleaner installation. When using CCleaner, be sure to run the Issues SCAN and fix those items.

The other thing that comes to mind is to delete, or rename your normal.dot file. This is the template that stores your preference settings, customized toolbars, macros, etc. So, be aware that you will lose these by deleting the file. If you don't want to delete the file, then rename it; in either case (deleting or renaming), Word will create a new normal.dot file. Close Word when deleting or renaming the file. When Word is then started, it will create the new normal.dot file. The POINT of this is that the normal.dot file can become corrupted and cause problems.

You could run CCleaner, then see whether Word changes its behavior. Or, you could first try the normal.dot technique. It's a flip of the coin. CCleaner is a good tool to keep installed and run periodically for general system maintenance. So, if you don't have it, you might go ahead and get it and try it first.

Solve : MessengerStatsClient.cab31267.cab?

Answer»

Sorry if this is in the wrong topic. I couldnt find anything more related than "Computer Software".

I've been using Msn Messenger for quite some time already, and for some reason i am unable to use activities with require activeX (such as games) with contacts.

The problem is this. Firstly a popup appears(most LIKELY from windows firewall) stating that they have blocked "MessengerStatsClient.cab31267.cab" because they are unable to confirm its digital signature/certificate. Anyway, they blocked the .cab file.

Nextly, the window(where the activity is to be held) is unable to load. There is an error message there:"ActiveX Objects Missing 2
Messenger games require ActiveX objects in order to play. Please verify that you have the ability to install ActiveX objects on this machine and relaunch your game. "

1. I was the only user on the computer and should have the ability to install activeX objects.
2. Msn messenger is the only program i've ever encountered that had this problem

My guess is that a firewall had blocked "MessengerStatsClient.cab31267.cab" from the msn website (http://messenger.zone.msn.com/binary/MessengerStatsClient.cab31267.cab). I tried turning off my windows firewall. I even turned off my avast! antivirus program. Still the problem reoccured. I also tried restarting the computer but to no avail.

I decided once that this was not IMPORTANT but soon it became an irritation with contacts. Please help. I tried SEARCHING online on this .cab file but found nothing. You may need to reset your security zones to their default setting.

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security
6. Reset all 4 (four) zones to their default settings.

Thank you very much. I'm checking if it works now.It doesnt really work but thanks. I've looked closer into the pop up that came up and apparently zone.msn's digital certificate was not considered valid on my computer.

Maybe there are some missing certificates on my computer and i'm going to try and import them from my friends.

Thanks for your helpLet us know if that worked, if you please.i've asked a few frens to help but apparently they CANT find any certificate authorities in their internet options that is similar to those mentioned by the messengerstatsclient.cab31267.cab.

i've ran out of ideas to try to fix the problem. is there another WAY?Do you have programs installed that actively block/uninstall ActiveX not native to the installation of Windows XP?

Microsoft Antispyware is an example of a program that can block/regulate ActiveX elements. The only antivirus/adware/spyware programmes I have installed on my computer are Avast antivirus, Spybot S&D and Adaware. I do not think these will in anyway affect ActiveX. Anyway I have tried closing them down but to no avail. The pop-up you have described earlier, can you find out exactly where this pop-up comes from? The pop up doesnt really have any information on that, but its has the same "shield" logo as the systray's "windows security alerts", so i'm guessing that it came from the windows firewall.

Weirdly, even after i have turned off the firewall, the pop up still continued appearingCan you create and show a screenshot of the pop-up and the icon you are referring to?

Solve : Remote Assistance type program?

Answer»

Are there any good, secure, free (or cheap) apps out there like XP's Remote Assistance that would let me view and control my parent's system, which is running Win2000?

pkLike free VPN software?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=free+vpnAllochthonous....... PC anywhere will certainly do it for you . You might also wish to check out ..... https://www.copilot.com/ I believe there is a trial offer .
Pity you both dont have XP installed ........ it's built in .

DL65 >TightVNC< is exactly what you need. Absolutely free, remote control software.I believe this can be done with NetMeeting. I experienced it once. A friend introduced me to NetMeeting. Once we got it working at both ends, he granted my permission to take control of his desktop to see how it works. I saw his desktop on my computer screen and could control his machine.I actually think NetMeeting will work for what i want to do.

PKI thought you said, "secure"!!! Yeah, I see that NetMeeting leaves a port open according to ShieldsUp!, but isn't any program like this going to do that? Is that what you meant?

TightVNC does not seem to be very secure, either, is it?

This has to be easy to use. My dad is not very computer literate and the point of this is so i can help him better via the internet.

PKTightVNC can connect over SSL - i.e. a secure, encrypted channel. It is a mature, open source product, which means that thousands of hyper-intelligent ubergeeks have read the source code, checking for, and patching security holes.

NetMeeting, on the other hand, is by Microsoft. 'Nuff said."As-is"?

Here is what the FAQ says:

How secure is TightVNC?
Although TightVNC encrypts VNC passwords sent over the net, the rest of the traffic is sent as is, unencrypted (for password encryption, VNC uses a DES-encrypted challenge-response scheme, where the password is limited by 8 characters, and the effective DES key length is 56 bits). So using TightVNC over the Internet can be a security risk. To solve this problem, we plan to work on built-in encryption in future versions of TightVNC.

In the mean time, if you need real security, we recommend installing OpenSSH, and using SSH TUNNELING for all TightVNC connections from untrusted networks.

So do I need to intsall this OpenSSH in order to be secure?

This confuses me, to be honest.

PKOops - my bad. I thought they'd got that sorted already.

Do you know how to set up a VPN connection? That's a facility built into later Windows NETWORKING that enables you to create an encrypted PRIVATE "tunnel" between two netwoks/computers. You can send your VNC connection through this VPN tunnel. That would be easier than installing and configuring SSH (particularly on Windows).

Sorry it's confusing, but the nitty gritty of network security is pretty complex. No, I don't know how to do that. I am pretty dumb when it comes to networking.

I wonder if RealVNC would be worth the $30. It sounds more secure. I really wanted to find something free, but am also moderately CONCERNED about security.

I guess we will just use NetMeeting only in emergencies.

Unless anyone else has any suggestions.

Solve : MetaFrame Presentation Server Web Client For Win32?

Answer»

When I'm trying to run a web based application that uses the CITRIX - MetaFrame Presentation Sever Web Client for Win32 I get a message saying: NETWORK Connection To Your Application Was Interrupted. Now, when I'm logged on as the Admin, it works. When I'm logged on as the user it doesn't. It sounds like a permission issue, but I'm not sure what permission is causing this issue. If anyone out there that had this happen before or knows what I could try, please let me KNOW. Thanks!Ok, I fixed my own problem. I'll SHARE with you all in case you come in contact with SOMETHING like this. You must give full control acces to a registry key. Solve : CD Burner? Expiration date??

Answer»

Hi! I finally found my way around the computer, located my music files and am now ready to burn them to a CD. Thing is, it says its fixing to, says "1 of 1 songs complete" but then the disc tray opens and says "There were errors during the recording or errors on your new CD"

Well, I bought this SMALL tower of blank CDs about a year ago, our last computer crashed and so we now have this. I installed the software just last night...but...it has me thinking too.

At the moment, something has a hold of this computer, causing nothing to show up when it starts up except the WALLPAPER, won't recognize cameras or scanners when plugged in and Windows Explorer won't open. {I'm on a Windows XP} by the way....

Another crappy theory I have is that...

Well, do blank CDs become useless after a period of time? Let's say, a year?

I'm pretty sure its the first, but if its the latter, I can spend $20 instead of hundreds.Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? How much RAM do you have? Which software were you installing to burn CDs? Also, CDs do NOT have an expiration date! They go "bad" only if exposed to direct heat or sunlight, and even sharp objects.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Oh hey, thank you for the help but I figured something out {different PROGRAM} I appreciate it though.Sure! Come on back and see us shoudl you have any more questions!

Solve : Roxio / Sonic / Installshield on a Dell?

Answer»

I just finished correcting the Sonic Update Manager missing CDROM problem on my Dell by removing the the Roxio CD-DVD Copying Software that I NEVER use, when I was presented with the Sonic ACTIVATION Module missing CDrom problem so I uninstalled the Sonic from ControlPanel\Add-Delete programs and Program Files and I uninstalled the INSTALLSHIELD software entirely and scrubbed the registry of all the leftovers (nearly 200 broken keys). So now all of it is gone and the error messages no longer appear.

My Questions are: Should I reinstall the Installshield software? Is it really shielding me from ANYTHING? or just driving software updates for programs on my computer that I may not be using? or does it have other functions i am not aware of? Installshield is part of MANY software installations. If one is needed for a particular program it will use it's own. You are good to go.

Solve : Outlook install over Outlook Express?

Answer»

I installed MS Office over the trial version that was pre-installed on my machine. The applications all converted over nicely, except Outlook Express. I already dumped the shortcuts but it remains apparently as a standalone in C:\Program Files\Outlook Express that does not appear in the Control Panel Add/Delete programs list.

So, my question is, can I delete the C:\Program Files\Outlook Express file without harm? or does my active Outlook application share files with the original Outlook Express? Look in the Outlook Express folder for any files ending in ".pab", ".pst" or ".wab". If you don't find any, you can delete the folder entirely.Outlook Express is part of Windows. If you install Outlook, you can just use it instead of Outlook Express. If you are using Windows 98 all your mail will be stored in Windows\Application Data somewhere I think. Those would be .dbx files. Your Address Book (.wab) will also be there somewhere.

If you are using Windows XP your mail should be in DOCUMENTS and Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{9A50FA12-F90E-4AE0-BAF7-DCCD55C3A00D} (or something similar) \Microsoft\Outlook Express

Address Book = Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

MS Office has nothing to do with Outlook Express. So, what do you mean by "The applications all converted over nicely, except Outlook Express."

As noted in another post, Outlook Express is a Windows component, just like Internet Explorer. So, I'm leery of robpomeroy's statement that it can simply be deleted. He's very knowledgeable and may be absolutely right, but I would not do that. If you don't want to use Outlook Express, then simply do not use it.

If Outlook Express is on your Start menu, you can remove it by going to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components. This simply removes the shortcut.
"If Outlook Express is on your Start menu, you can remove it by going to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components. This simply removes the shortcut. "

I think this removes more than the shortcut. If you want to remove the shortcut, just delete it.Well, I agree removing any shortcuts can simply be just deleted. But, based on all appearances, the "removal" via Add/Remove Windows Components only removes shortcuts. In the Add/Remove Windows Components panel, the impact on hard drive space of adding or removing a component is displayed. In CASES where, supposedly, the only thing removed is shortcuts to the component, the change in drive space is displayed as 0.00MB. And, a MESSAGE at the lower part of the panel says, "Adds or removes access to Outlook Express from the Start menu".

I tested the procedure. It removes all shortcuts, including one I had on my Quick Launch toolbar. When I accessed Add/Remove Windows Components again to add it BACK, it was added back to the Programs menu. I opened Outlook Express and went to Tools, Options, Accounts, Mail, to make sure my email account data was still there. It was.

Why Outlook Express and some other components are displayed in Add/Remove Windows Components merely to remove shortcuts, I have to wonder. Only Bill GATES knows..... Thanks everyone, all good info. I ended up deleting the Outlook Express since I didn't see any of the files mentioned, and Outlook still works fine.Yes, they are two separate programs. Thanks for posting back.

Solve : Outlook Express - wiped itself??

Answer»

Hi,

Went into Outlook Express yesterday - very surprised to find that all the emails had apparently been wiped.

So I tracked down the folder where the emails are kept, to find:

It's apparently decided to make replacement files for everything - those being the files with the (1) after their name. Deleting these files doesn't make any difference, as OE will just create a new (1) file to replace it rather than OPEN up the original file.

What also doesn't work is taking the original message files to a new folder and importing them into OE from there, as it'll just make new (1) files in that new folder and completely ignore what I've asked it to do.

So...all sorts of VITAL emails are inaccessible (I assume they're still there, as the original files are the right size)...any ideas?Start looking here:

http://www.google.co.za/search?hl=en&q=how+to+recover+outlook+express+emails&meta=

Thanks for that - is there any recovery program I can use that's sort of...FREE? Have a read here:

And then use thtat Google button:

Solve : rpm installer for windows?

Answer»

i was just wonering if any one knew of a rpm installer for windowsRPM packages as a RULE contain binaries for Linux systems (or sometimes source code). They expect a Linux file structure, and must be MANAGED by the Linux-based RedHat Packet Manager (or something similar). They are not intended for Windows and won't do anything on it. You wuold NEED a Windows release of the software (if one is available). Look for .zip files rather than .rpm files.

Side note: I think that RealPlayer also uses the .rpm extension, but such files WOULD RELATE to video/audio (streams) and would not be capable of being installed.

Solve : Auto Download Programs? do they exist??

Answer»

Hi all

I'm looking for a good (free) auto download PROG where you can give it the url or url range and it downloads all the pages, or videos, or photos or whatever automatically and saves them to a file. Do these programs exist? Can anyone suggest such a program? :-?

thanks! There are a few programs that can do that like WebZip or PaqRat. Don't think they are free though. And I am not entirely sure if that is legal.

RegardsYeah, there are plenty of free tools out there. For EXAMPLE, wget, which is a *nix tool originally, but it w=has been ported to WINDOWS. One Win interface is AVAILABLE >here<.

Solve : Firewall slow?

Answer»

For some reason in the last few days, my computer boots up OK, But my firewall has started to take a minute and a half before it kicks in. It never used to be LIKE this, Anyone have any idears as to why.Are you running more than one firewall?...It's usually not a GOOD idea to run two or more at a time, that alone can REALLY decrease boot performance.

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]Have you scanned for viruses and Spuware? Have you MADE any changes to your system recently?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes i do run more then one Firewall and never had a problem before, Of to do a virus scan now, will keep you posted, done virus scan and spyware scan, all is ok, but still the same with the firewall been real slow to boot up.

Solve : XP screwed up Firefox!?

Answer»

I was on my computer tonight, and the power in the house went out for a second. My computer restarted, and it came up to a blue window that said it was checking drive C: for errors. It started listing file names for firefox. Then it said below each one that it truncated them because they were too long or something. Windows loaded, and I go to get on firefox, and none of my bookmarks are listed anymore! I tried looking for them in the folder for firefox, but have been UNABLE to locate a folder for them. Apparently you can't access them like you can with IE. What can I do? I suppose I could reinstall firefox and it might restore the origional file names. Anyone have any suggestions?Uninstall Firefox, if you can and then reinstall. What happens now?Your power Cut must of croupted the Bookmarks folder, you may need to use a recover program to get your Bookmarks back,

if scan disk said it truncated the names , they may be on your computer in a folde whit only half a name, run a search on the computer for a file whit the name of one of your Bookmarks, and you might find the folder intact but in the wrong place

On C:\ is there a bunch or folders with names like 0001 0002 0003 etc..

if there are there FILES ChkDsk saved, and your short cuts could be in them

Hope this helpsI don’t know if you know but asking if I speak English, wont help the solve problem. And i'm 22 and yes English is my First language. My spelling ability is quite low, but most who have talk to me in person believe I have good literary skills. however this does not always convey well in to written English as my POOR spelling ability sometimes Cripples my ability to put the words I wont to use into text, if you had any idea how hard it is to be well spoken and given a pen and not known what its like to put it to paper and find you just couldn’t use you full capacity due to a mental defect, you could come close to understanding how hard it is. And this mental barrier doesn’t stop me trying to help people as best I can. There is no point in knowing anything if you are unable to use that knowledge to try to help those who don’t. And you are giving e the impression that you know that i’m Giving some bad info and yet the lack of either the knowledge or the Will to CORRECT it. And that saddens me, I give you great pityGmcfan,
Just re-install it.
You may be able to configure ScanDisk to stop checking for long file names.

Just click Start>Programs>System Tools>Scandisk
Find the options button,
and unselect "check for long file names" (I believe that's what the option is)
The original poster is apparently AWOL.

Solve : MS Paint dpi?

Answer»

Is it possible to change the dpi for an individual picture using MS Paint? If not, is there another program I can use to change the dpi for the image. I already tried changing the dpi for the monitor and some of the images adjusted to it and some of them didn't. I've accidentally changed the dpi for a single image before, but I never can figure out how it happened.

Any HELP is greatly appreciated.
MS Paint isn't really up to that kind of JOB; it has no resampling facilities and RATHER poor resizing facilities. If you're looking for a graphics package that will do absolutely everything, but which doesn't REQUIRE you to sell your elderly relatives into slavery, I recommend The Gimp. It's free. You'll find a link in the software FAQ (follow the link in my signature). You could also try Adobe Photoshop.
There's a chance you could get it FREE from your local library.

But it looks like The GIMP might be easier if you dont know how to user Photoshop.

Solve : Program Wont Load?

Answer»

I just bought Roller Coaster Tycoon and I was trying to install it and when i PUT the DISK in and it said it was starting winzip...it came to the end of the download bar thingy, and then a error message came up saying that "You MUST uninstall your original roller coaster tycoon before you install roller coaster tycoon deluxe. I went throught every single comp. file for like 4 hours...literally! looking for any and all files relating to a previous R.C.T. demo that i had...and i deleted EVERYTHING! Now i keep putting in the disk again and the same message keeps popping up! I'm sooooo~> frusterated! please help quick!!!! :-/Did you delte the demo or uninstall it?
If you deleted it, you should re-install the demo then uninstall it with it's own uninstaller or with windows add/remove programs.
If you uninstalled it, first check at the GAME's website for any hints and if all else fails try searching your registry for any and all traces of the game. You should use a registry scanner to remove faultry registry entries.

Also inspect the retail box of ROLLERCOASTER Tycoon carefully to see if you indeed require the full version before you can install Deluxe.

Solve : Firewall problem??

Answer»

hi all ,

im quite new to all this so here it goes...

I recieved an old PC off my sister which had windows xp professional(have to log in as admin) anyhoo... i tried to connect to the internet via internet explorer and it came up with the error "page cannot be displayed", so i obviosly thought i had done sum thing to the connection. Start > run>cmd>ping www.google.com ..... but it acually recieved and sent pakages.. so i know the internet works and it would allow microsoft updates.. when i loaded windows live meesenger up, again it would not connect to the internet and the troubleshoot told me there was a firewall or proxy stopping me from connecting.. but i cannot find any program that is stopping the connection from occuring. (mozilla works, but bitcomet, limewire, msn, IE and steam does not connect to the net?)

i have recently FOUND out it is an ex university PC(might have a certain firewall on) and i was wondering what i could do to get connected WITHOUT having to re install windows XP??

If the docs ,were deleted using the incinerator PART of system mechanic , I'm afraid they are GONE ........... Unless someone out there knows some trick.

dl65 I think that is the purpose - to lose them forever. I would check with the program manufacturer for the definite response. It depends on the delete that System Mechanics does.

Did you do a quick pass?
a US GOV Standard?
7 Pass DOD?

If you did a quick pass, then you could probably get it back.
I don't have System Mechanics, so I cant TELL you much about what to do.

Solve : Can a person delete obsolete files safely?

Answer»

When I run CCleaner on a computer I am cleaning up, I have a couple of files that come back each time while "checking for issues" in the registry and it says they are "Obsolete Files"

Could I remove them from the registry safely?

One is "internet privacy software"

The other is "mathies.com"

Thanks,Yes, you should be fine to delete those. What about this?

This computer had a scanner on it as well. It was a Presto Page Manager, Newsoft company. I removed everything from the scanner I could find, but get this one too in CCleaner. It looks to me like its probably leftovers from the scanner.

Can I loose this too?

Here is what I'm seeing.

Be a thrillseeker, hit the fixit button, you'll be right.

Actually, I have hit it each time it came up. This one and the others I mentioned above, were right back the next time I ran CCleaner. :-?

But, they were the only ones that kept coming back.

Thanks,I've been looking around the ccleaner website, it seems they have a small program called dial a fix that corrects the registry PERMISSIONS.
Having said that, I too get a few things to fix from time to time and they are also the same ones repeated over & over.
I just delete them & move on, I'm not too keen on running a program to change my registry permissions without a full understanding of exactly what it's doing and why.Fed,

So, I may just not worry about it too much. Is that what I'm understanding you to say.

Thanks,

Yes, just fix the issues and move on.
If you ever find out the cause let us know.
BTW, I have never heard of even one instance of ccleaner doing any damage. This old computer is the only one I have put CCleaner in and had things come back repeatedly after clicking to fix the issues.

I did find the mathies.com that was showing as an obsolete registry key was related to "Pop This" pop up blocker that I installed on the computer.

But, the program was active. I totally uninstalled it and re-installed it, then ran CCleaner (which is set by dl65's post on setting it up) and it showed up as an obsolete registry key again. :-?

Hmm.Spooky eh? :-? Perhaps a registry cleaner with a bit more grunt. Quote

Solve : system32 folder appears on startup?

Hi, recently i have been attacked by tons of trojan and adware. I'm unable to list them since i forgot to note them down but my computer seems to be free from them now after using Norton Anti Virus scan and Super Ad Blocker. However, upon clearing them, whenever i reboot my computer the system 32 window will appear containing tons of files in it. It does not seem to affect my computer but its pretty annoying after some time.

I've tried to use the 'System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot' at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm to fix it but my computer responded - 'could not repair, expected value not found.'

Solve : Spontaneous Reboots?

Answer»

My XP has taken to spontaneously rebooting. It would occur about once a week but is now happening about twice. There seems to be no correlation between what I'm doing and the reboots, some of which occur when I'm not present.

Any ideas would be appreciated.scan for trojans/worms etc in safe mode....hold down the f8 on boot...........i would unless you use it disable remote access..........do you use norton av..2005...have you added any new hardware!Use the following applications:

AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Go into the control panel / administrative tools /EVENT viewer ....... have a look and see if there are any errors listed ......

let us know

Wow! Lots to respond to here. Thanks, everyone. I'll address them all.

I run Norton's Firewall and virus checker. After the first couple of reboots I went to Trend Micro Online and ran a check through the, after mine showed nothing. Nothing detected there either. No new hardware, but lots of new software - so much so that I doubt I could pin it to any one of them. None, however, are things I would expect to FIND adware in.

Will go take a look at that event logger mentioned. Thanks loads.
GlennControl Panel>System>Advanced>Startup & Recovery
turn off Automatic Reboot.NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE

I got sidetracked by the above I found in the event viewer. It seems that outfit was given SPECIAL LOGIN PRIVILEDGES. (I run a server). Does anyone know who those people are?NT AUTHORITY is a user account that runs many of the services on your computer, shutdown for one. This is nothing to worry about. The BLASTER worm was could be reponsible for your problem, but if you've run scans it should have turned up by now. If you FOLLOWED Fed's advice, when the system fails you should get a blue screen with a stop code. It may be easier to troubleshoot with that code.

Hope this helps. Thanks to everyone. Haven't had a reboot since I posted the problem here(grin). I did shut the auto reboot off as suggested.

Solve : Configuring Microsoft Outlook Using Group Policy?

Answer»

Is it possible to configure computers installed with Microsoft Outlook 2002 & 2003 using Group Policy or any other means that will change the Outlook SETTINGS automatically when the user logs on?

Specifically, what I would like to do is change the setting for the Microsoft Exchange Server name that is configured in Outlook for about 200+ clients in my ORGANISATION without having to go to every single PC.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.Click here -> HTTP://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011402571033.aspx.
