dl65, I keep reading on here there is much more protection to be had from Spybot than the default settings provide, so I thought I would do some digging.
Now if they would just fix the GUI bug.
If you need the fix, Google +spybot +reshacker. What GUI bug?http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2005-06-22.htmlOh, the "Resident Tea Timer" bug where you can't see the whole display on the registry change warning box.

Solve : Help with Movie maker?

Answer»

I have a video file which is just a little too large to successfully burn onto a 4.7 gig dvd ..... So what I would
like to do is edit ( or trim) the front end and remove all the credits and the list of actors etc....... WINDOWS MOVIE maker is able to do this but ........... I can import the vid file ok ....... get it into the Show Timeline ...ok get it playing ...but I cant seem to be able to trim it . The instructions provided are not what I would call user friendly ...... If anyone here has used it , I would appreciate some assistance .

CHEERS

dl65 Click on Show Timeline, and then click on the timeline above the CLIP you want to trim. When a blue line appears, drag your mouse ACROSS until you see two red arrows, this will enable you to trim clips.

Solve : Outlook 2003-Email remains in Outbox?

Answer»

I have a database program that generates a report, in the form of a ".trn" file, and attempts to send the file to someone via an Outlook 2003 email. The email appears in the Outbox, but when Outlook attempts to send it out, email is opened and the program that generated the email is closed by the operating system (Windows XP Professional). Windows presents the familiar warning message that says that Windows has encountered an error with a program's executable file and has to close it. The email continues to SIT in the Oubox with the open envelope icon.
The application log in Event Viewer has a record of the error, but it does not contain any specific information.
I never see a window telling me that an application is trying to access Outlook and asking me if I WANT to allow this.
The Outlook settings, as far as I know, are all default settings.
We use Exchange 2003.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!Have you tried zipping thefile before mailing? (Hypothesising that there's a problem with Exchange's attachment sanitisation facility.)Thanks for your help, robpomeroy! This program does not offer an option to zip the file before attaching it to an email. More info: If I copy the file that appears in the email in the outbox and attach it to a new email, I can send this email out without a problem. The problem OCCURS when the database program tries to send out an email with the file attached.Okay - the issue is with the DDE link between the "parent" program and Outlook. Possibly reinstalling both programs would help, but it might be caused by a more fundamental problem than that - version conflict or bad programming. Recommend you simply email saved files rather than emailing via the "parent" program.I can do that. Is it possible that Outlook has a security setting that is preventing another program from sending email through it? I'm not getting a message from Outlook about this, though, like I would expect. If this were caused by a security setting, you should receive a security error - not a crash report.Do you absolutely need to send the file in the .trn format? Does the recipient(s) need to have the same program to view the report? Are they going to just view the report, or are they supposed to import the file into their software? Does your software give you the option of saving that report in a different format? Soybean, thanks for your help! The file PROBABLY has to be in this format. I'm pretty sure that the recipient uses the same program to import the report. I don't know of a way to save the report in a different format. I think that I will just save the file to my desktop, CREATE an email on my own, attach the document from the desktop, and send it that way. I know that this way will work-I've done it before. This all involves extra steps, though, but no big deal. Thank-you both for your help!

Solve : Outlook and Exchange?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone can TELL me how to download emails into SEPARATE folders when using OUTLOOK with exchange. Right now, I have 3 email accounts and they all download to the same folder. Is there a way so that they automatically download to separate folders so I don't have to sort them myself?

Thanks.

Solve : Old wordpad docs don't work in XP?

Answer»

Yesterday I upgraded to XP from 98se, and I can't get my OLD 6.0 Wordpad DOCUMENTS to work in XP's Wordpad. It says "can not load Word for Windows 6.0 files"

I don't have Microsoft word 2000 or anything like that, is there a way to make my 6.0 documents work in the new version of Wordpad?

Thanks,

JonJon,

If you have a reasonably good internet connection, download OpenOffice.org, the free OFFICE suite. It will solve all of your problems are provide you with so many extra facilities. You won't regret it.gmcfan, I believe you've got some erroneous statements in your post. There is no "6.0 Wordpad", so I presume you're talking about Word 6.0. Is that right?

I can open Word 2003 documents with Windows XP Wordpad. So, I would think you can open those Word 6.0 files. When you open Wordpad and then click on the open icon, you should see an option in the "Files of type:" box for "Word for Windows (*.doc)". If you don't see that, try All Documents (*.*) to view your Word 6.0 files and try to open them.robpomeroy-I have dialup, but that's never stopped me from downloading large files before [smiley=cool.gif]

As for word 6.0, I get this when I try to load one

This is what happens regardless of what I select in the File Type box.

JonDon't know what your problem is there. Years ago, I used Office 4.3, which consisted of Word 6.0, Excel 5.0, Access 2.0, etc. I found some old Word 6.0 files on a floppy and opened them with Wordpad with no problem.

What does this mean: "robpomeroy-I have dialup, but that's never stopped me from downloading large files before"? You could not download it, or you haven't tried but still intend to, or what?

This may be another alternative: Microsoft Word 97/2000 ViewerI'd guess the file you are trying to load is an old .wps file from Works for Windows or sililar.
Do you have the old original software that you used to create the file, it will run quiet well on XP, I'm still using Works for Windows from 3.11 and it runs like a rocket.
If you have TE old original software you could then save it as a different format that you can then open.Quote

robpomeroy-I have dialup, but that's never stopped me from downloading large files before [smiley=cool.gif]
Great. It's 70 megs or so, so make sure you use something that can resume downloads. You're looking at 4+ hours to download, I would guess.

The other suggestions in this thread are also good alternatives, if you're in more of a rush, but I THOUGHT you might appreciate the full office software while you were at it. I got it downloaded, took 6 1/2 hours at 49.9 bps. It went smoothly, didn't have to resume the download or anything, which is odd, because it usually does quit right in the middle. I'll install it tomorrow, too tired to do it now lol

JonGolly. You might benefit from an MD5 check, just to ensure that nothing was lost/corrupted during the download. Or you could just attempt the install and hope for the best...Forgot about this thread for a while lol

I got it installed and it works perfectly!

Thanks fellas!

JonVery glad to hear it. There's one thing that's undeniable about OpenOffice.org. It's ridiculously good value for money.

Solve : Photoshop edit files question.?

Answer»

Okay I know this is kind of a lame question, and not really necessary although its annoying. I've usually in Windows Explorer been able to open up more than one photo to edit at a time. example> SELECT multiple photos, right click and select edit in photoshop. Then without problem Photoshop would start, and all the photos would open, usually I would do this for new pictures create an action script to have them resized for web.

Now, the problem. I can't do this anymore. For some reason when I select more than one file and right click and select edit in Photoshop, I see an hour glass for half a second, and then nothing. Not one thing happens, photoshop never loads.

I can only open one file from explorer at a time to edit in photoshop. I know this is really mundane, although i'd still like to be able to have the choice to select like 40 pics and edit them all at once. Any suggestions?ktwriter...... Why not simply open photoshop , and then use click open ......
You can have a mit full all open at the same time.

dl65 I could..but it was just the convenience lol. The fact that I used to be able to do it and now I can't just gives me a little bug. I would always just right click like an entire folder and open them at once, like I said not a huge deal, but still why does it not work now ya knowReinstall Photoshop. YEAH I ended up reinstalling photoshop, didn't fix it. Then talk about STRANGE, I had only recently added a program called PowerISO. I removed it because I only used the demo for one reason. After I removed it, my explorer functions returned. Strange. Although i'm happy, it works the way I had it again THANKS everyone for the tips

File>Identities>Manage Identities>Properties>
Tick the password box thingie HMMM
That only stops people logging on to your server as you.
I THINK you may have to do this from the control panel and set yourself up as a password user.I don't have an "identity" OPTION...This may work.

Start Outlook-->File-->Data File Management

Click the .pst file you want, and then click Settings.
Click Change Password and fill in the boxes.

HOPE this helps.I do not have the data file option either. Is this an extra, or does this come standard with the software?Maybe you need to be logged in as Admin?Should have asked this earlier. What version of Windows and Outlook are you using?

Solve : How do I install this popular game ??

Answer»

Hi folks,

I downloaded Football Manager 2006 from Limewire, and it came with a patch and crack.
I extracted it with WinRAR, but don't know how to install it onto the computer. Also in the extracted file is Daemon Tools 3.47 and Vitual CD hide v 1.0.0.4
When I open the text file for INSTRUCTIONS, it says....
0. Install the game and apply patch.
1. Make sure the compatibility is set to Windows 2000.
2. GET Daemon Tools 3.47 and mount your FM2006 image.
3. Get Vitrual CD HIDE 1.0.04 and launch it (hide all virtual drives).
4. Run the game.
5. Enjoy.

I haven't a clue what to do NEXT and would GREATLY appreciate any help.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and have plenty of memory.

Thanks.I'm sorry, but we will NOT assist anyone in pirating any sort of software or files. I suggest doing a Google search or trying elsewhere.

I had a copy of this but it is broken so I downloaded this as back up.Pirating. Limewire does not provide legitimate copies and this certainly is not one (with a crack provided). If you bought it then you should be able to get a replacement CD from the manufacturer. As stated, we will not assist you with this. You legally obtained your copy, but you pirated another. Sorry. Solve : Convert Audio to Video??

Answer»

I need to convert .wav to .AVI, .MOV, or.MPG.

The purpose: I want to post my audio content on my blog, but the blog service will not allow embedded audio, but the will allow embedded youtube.com or Google videos.

I tried using Movie Maker, but that creates a .wmv file which cannot be used with Youtube. I have a program that will then convert .wmv to .avi. But by the time I'm done with the long process, my file is humongous, I've spent way to much time and I still have to upload the file. I'd like to make my life simpler if ya know what I mean...

Thanks.Follow the software link in my signature. Look for Vidomi, under multimedia. That should do the job for you.I'll give it a try...

ThanksI INSTALLED Vidomi. It converts mpeg files. I need SOMETHING that will conver WAV files.

Maybe I am just missunderstanding something...Ah, well. You can't convert audio to video. You need to add audio to a VISUAL track. Try Windows Movie Maker.

When I schedule a meeting in OUTLOOK 2003 there are three TABS at the TOP of the Create Appointment window: Appointment, Scheduling and Tracking. If I click on the scheduling tab and start adding attendees to the meeting, their schedules BEGIN to populate the screen. The schedules appear as bars and if you hover your mouse over the bars (or right click) you can see the details of the attendees other appointments. Solve : GOBACK and GHOST?

Answer»

Hey all,

So I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but here it goes. So I have this hard drive that I need to transfer the data from, but I can't get any OS to recognize it. I've tried Windows, Nopix and linux. The only thing so far that sees it is a boot-able version of Ghost. Now the HDD also has Nortons Goback on it which I have heard causes some issues with Ghost and my first ATTEMPT to use ghost on it has failed. A message comes up and says it has found some BAD sectors and says would you like to take it sector by sector. I choose that option and then Ghost freezes up. Not sure if there is any fix or if the HDD is done for. If anyone has any INFO that would help it would be appreciated. Hope I gave enough info on the problem to be at least a little insightful.

Thanks for your time
Sonnysounds like you have norton SYSTEM works cdrom disk if you have use disk doctor.....who will scan for bad blocks sectors......The Ghost disk I have is an ISO transfered to a floppy, although I have a Hiren's disk with Disk Doctor on it. I will give that a try. Thanks for the TIP. Should have thought of that before

Thanks again

Solve : outlook 2000 - question about categories?

Answer»

Hi,

I have done a major overhaul of my method of ORGANISING outlook and am going to rely more on the category function rather than too many folders.

I want to mark a category for every single mail that i send and recieve. i was WANDERING:

is there a way to get outlook to warn me with a DIALOG box if i forget to select a category for a email which i am sending?

i am pretty sure there has got to be a way, i just can't find it.

cheers,

ocYou would have to do some programming using Outlook's VBA API. Are you up to that?unforunately i don't know anything about VBA.

In the rules function displaying a dialog box seems to be an option to set against incoming emails, but is not on the list when you select to make a rule for emails you send.

oh well, i EITHER live without it or get studying!

thanks for the quick response.

ocI say have a schedule program to warn your email that is probably the easyier way

Solve : Window media player won't burn as MP3?

Answer»

I have music files that I KNOW are MP3s but when I try to burn them to a CD using either Sonic of Windows Media Player they show up as a 1 KB AUDIO file..These are one minute radio ads that I need to give to clients as MP3 - I can email them as attachments to radio stations as MP3s just fine but can't seem to burn them as such. I can't FIND any settings to change. I know that WMP stores as WMAs, not MP3s, but I am pulling these out of files using Explorer. I just tried copying a CD of MP3s and it did the same thing - it showed up as I KB files - the size should be closer to 500 to 900 KB for this size of file. I upgraded to WMP 10 tonight but that has not helped. I am using ordinary CD - Rs. They play just fine but that is not the point - radio stations need them as MP3s and so do some clients. HEELLPPP!!!!!barbyb... So you are using WMP10 ........ and you have mp3 audio files .......
go to where your audio files are stored and open them up in WMP , click burn , and it will prompt you to add the file to the burn list ..... once you have them on the burn list , click on the start burn button.

I just BURNT a cd using WMP 10 and it work just fine .

I have attached a screen shot for you.

Let us know how it goes.

dl65 That is exactly what I did - and yes it does seem to work fine but when I put the CD I just burned back in the drive and click on Explore and then click on that CD drive to see what is on the CD is shows up as this stupid 1 KB file. If I try to attach the file to an email from the CD drive itself it also shows up as a 1 KB file which means anyone I email it to can't use it. When you burnt your CD does it show up as an MP3 when you did an Explore check on it??? there must be some setting I am not tweaking right but there does not seem to be any to tweak!

Solve : Problems with attachments in MS Outlook?

Answer»

I had been having a few small problems with my MS Outlook program. I thought that clicking on "Reset Defaults" MIGHT help. It didn't help and, in fact, it has CAUSED problems. I'm running Outlook 2002 and before I was able to attach documents, files and photos and they would show up as icons at the bottom of the page. I was also able to insert photos into the body of my e-mails. I can no longer do either of these. When I insert a file now, it inserts wherever my cursor is located in the body of the text and I no longer even have the option of inserting a photo into the body of the text. I have searched the help files and looked at every possible menu option and I cannot figure out how to reset my preferences so that I can do these things again. Is there anyone who can help me out with this?http://www.kayodeok.btinternet.co.uk/favorites/kbofficeoutlook.htmI didn't find anything there that would help me figure out how to show the attachments at the bottom of the page and more importantly, how to insert photos into the body of my text in the e-mail. Can anyone tell me where it is in Outlook that I can go to adjust these settings? After reloading the softward. The new version comes up with the same way of inserting attachments as did the older version. I upgraded from Outlook 2000-SR1 to Outlook 2002 and the problems still exist which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the settings. I have the same version of Outlook on my other station and it ALLOWS me to insert photos in the body of the text, but I cannot findout where the settings are different. HELP!!!!Now here is a good one that adds a twist to the problem. A friend just sent me a message with a photo attached. I replied to him and went to attach a photo and all of the commands that I used to USE were available to me in the menu and they attached in the locations that they used to attach in my old format. This would seem to suggest that he has his settings like mine used to be.

I have Windows XP and Office 97. We have 4 user accounts. For the one user everything works perfect. (All users are set up as Administrators). But for all the others, if I create a Word document and save it as a Word DOC it would automatically switch over to Wordpad. I fixed that by going into File Types. But now all the documents STILL have the Wordpad icon beside them and say they are Wordpad docs. Even new ones that I have since created. When I try to "move" or "cut" one to another folder it does move but also remains in the old folder and I have to manually go back and delete it.Let's give this a try... save a file, and then Right-Click on the file icon. Click on properties. If you look, you will seee that it is opening in Wordpad..... Click on the CHANGE BUTTON next to that. Next, select MICROSOFT Word, and click on ok, and ok to exit. I hope this helps!

Solve : Discussion: best tools for techie??

Answer»

}{'lo all, I was browsing around the FORUMS asking some questions when a post from Merlin_2 got me THINKING... There are dozens of quite profesional PC TECHIES here who all have their favorite software tools for diagnosing, repairing and fixing stuff and some are realy cool gizmos! So I said to myself, "Self, lets start a discussion about the best software tools one can get... Good idea self!" and so here we are.

I personaly recomend MemTest, a RAM tester that checks for errors. Though there are probably dozens of testers out there I've used this one and havent had any problems with it so here it is:

http://hcidesign.com/memtest/

How about you? Got any good gizmos?

(Oh another good thing that EVERY thechie should have is... PRAYER lol you think i jest but it never hurts and lets face it there arew just some things that nothing else fixes! Though I've noticed there arn't many places to download it )Windows does contain its only diagnostic software

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

for graphics /audio testing dxdiag typed in the run box:

msinfo32 typed in the run box:

download sites.....snapfiles/majorgeeks/download.com

to mention a few.....most>> Its >>>>>use this >http://www.petri.co.il/download_windows_2003_reskit_tools.htmHere are the basics of what I often use/install on systems:

AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

And the applications I use to edit the registry are:

Ccleaner
Registrar LITE.
-- Perfect for manually editing the registry.
EasyCleaner
-- Very swift program.

The only memory diagnostic application I have ever used, is the one provided by Microsoft and recommended by Merlin. It seemed to work well.

I also recently started using WinPatrol, after it being recommended by Fed. It intercepts programs that wish to ADD theirselves to Windows start up. Quite useful, but more useful if a computer is allready infected.

Other than that, I do not use any other applications that I can think of at the moment. Most tools that I use are part of Windows. Bound to be more compatible.Cool, i didn't know that! Thnx Merlin. And thnx 2 u 2 Raptor!I use a tool that everybody has yet so many seem to forget, it's called http://www.google.com
It also has a built in game called 'Googlewacker'. Add to the list Everest and/or Aida32 to find out what's in the beast you're diagnosing. Some users can't even tell you what OS is installed.

Solve : Partition or not to partition??

Answer»

Hey all,
I finally got Windows XP software (I currently have ME) and during installation I got the following options:

1. To set up on selected item press Enter
Caution: installing on multiple op system on a single partion not recommended
2. To creat a partition in unpartitioned space press C
(THERE WAS NO "C" OPTION)
3. To delete press D
Caution: system partitions may contain diagnostic or hardware config programs, programs to start OS such as windows XP Delete a system partition only if you are sure that it contains no such progrmas or if you are willing to lose them
Selected item: C:Partition1 [FAT 32] 38162 MB < 23073 MB FREE
Seems to me that I don't have much of a safe choice!
I'm stumped as to what to do? Obviously, I escaped and never finished installation of XP.
How do I find out if my system partitions have important diagnostic or harware configs.
What do I next? Hi there, i hope this helps, do this ONLY and i do mean ONLY if you have the recovery (or an original copy of win 95,98 or ME), what you want to do is actually do a CLEAN install, you will have a prompt at the start of the process. Considering you have Millennium installed now, i highly recommend you do a clean install and not the upgrade. I don't know if you bought the FULL version of XP or merely an UPGRADE cd, if you do have the full version, go ahead and delete the existing partition (as it contains millennium files which you do not want to save) and install XP. If you only have a upgrade version of XP, go ahead and have handy a windows 95-98 or millennium cd handy and do a CLEAN install as the XP Upgrade cd will prompt you for any of the previous operating systems i mentioned to check for certain validity files. Then merely do a clean install from the upgrade as well. I hope this helps, and Cheers!

by the way, you can always borrow a copy of win95/98/ME from a friend to do a clean install from the upgrade XP disc, that also works as it only needs to read the 95/98/ME for a lil bit, then it will ask for the XP disc If you remove a partition and then reformat the partition/Hard Disk Drive you will loose all information stored.

If you have no data you wish to keep, you can safely remove the partition you have as Windows XP contains all the diagnostic and hardware configurations that you need to use your computer.I did get the full version of XP and I already backed up my important files. So, it looks like my choice should be to press D and delete and ignore the caution message.
It's so intimidating to me!
Once I install XP, should I go online and download the latest various drivers (which ones?) or should the software come with all the latests? I should probably check for Windows update to, right?
Thanks!MarleneD....Glad to hear your finally making the move to XP ....... Here's the order that I would follow.

Format hard drive .... ( remove everything and do a clean install) I would suggest using the NTFS .

Install win Xp .... Do not go online at this time.

If you have SP2 on a cd ...install it now.....if you don't have it on a cd you can download it later .

Install your Anti -virus program ........... Now go on-line and update your anti-virus program.

Now go to M/S update page and get all the available updates ......... Priority updates first then the optional updates and then the driver updates .

When you have the updates......you should activate your xp ....now . Note activation is differant than the product registration.

Once you activation is done , I would install any spware scanners you want ..... ie.. M/S antispware Beta and probably Ad-Aware SE personal ........

Next I would open up Outlook Express and set up your mail account ......... ( you should have saved the setup info you used before )

Now set up your Outlook Express to go directly to the inbox on opening .
Be sure sure to shut down the preview pane option .

Now you can reload whatever programs you wish .....

go into the control panel and make sure the auto updates are turned on .

Enjoy .......

1. Immediatly after (Preferably before) connecting to the Internet run Windows update.

Once that is done, install the following programs:

AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

And take the time to configure them properly.

Windows XP will most likely autodetect and autoconfigure all your hardware. Unless you wish to use specific drivers for certain hardware, it is not necessary to install drivers. Although you may need to install the drivers that came with the motherboard.
Thank you all so much ! I will probably begin installation again in a few days (Father's day stuff to do TODAY). I will let you know how the install goes.
By the way, Happy Father's day to those who are Dads!yep got the cards from the kids

back to the plot......what winxp was asking you to do was dual boot......winme/winxp.......like winxp would be drive c/winxp d/winme.......

more info on installing here>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/Hey Merlin_2,
Thanks so much for the site - fantastic! Now, I feel more confident in installing.
Marlene, after you install your various add-on programs (adaware, spybot, avg, zoneAlarm) and rebooting as needing during the installs do this: Make sure ZoneAlarm (or whatever firewall you installed) is running, then start your antivirus and try to update it, your firewall should alert you that it is trying to connect to the internet, make sure you select to always allow it to connect. Then go ahead and do the same for Adaware, SpyBot etc, make sure to try to update them WHILE the firewall is running so you can configure it to always allow those programs ACCESS to internet (so they can auto-update without probs). Hope this helps. CheersExcellent advice Cary_GRant! BTW, love your ID.
I'd never have thought to start the firewall first - good precaution advice.
Wish me luck!
MarleneD......Just a tip ......theres a firewall built into SP2
which by default is set on .......you can shut it off if you wish ......so once you have sp2 installed you have a firewall. ( it wont do as good a job as zone alarm , but it willl do a decent job preventing things comming in .

....Break a leg Good News !
Just installed Windows XP and love it! Even though icons look rather "cartoonish", it's much more intuitive.
I'm still getting to know it but so far, I'm very happy with the change. The website www.windowsreinstall.com really helped tremendously.
All the advice from all, as to what to do first before and after installation ,was great advice.
Thanks to all of you !Partitioning is the best way to go. Now that you have installed it is a bit late but can you tell us what you did? How big is the drive and how big are the partitions?

How much RAM does your system have? 512 Mb or more is great for XP as XP needs to have plenty of RAM.

So here are a few 'extras' for you to make a note of...

XP Clean Installing
XP Compatability Test
XP Partition Management
XP Installing Recovery Console

RAM Knowledge Base
RAM And What it Does
RAM Virtual Memory Paging
RAM Reseating & Fitting PDF File

Processor Temperatures
Service Pack Slipstreamer
Power SUPPLY Wattage Calculator
Everest Home Edition Computer Diagnostic Program

EmpTemp
CCLeaner File Cleaner

And here is a cleanup program which you will need as you use XP...

"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the contents of:

The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder

(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."

TweakUI is useful to have on your system for certain repairs... Powertoys/TweakUI

And you shoud install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service to ensure that your shut down works cleanly.

This is a really handy program if you can afford it...

If you download Diskeeper 9 Professional (not home) 30 day evaluation copy and use the inbuilt Frag-Shield program to see if the MFTs are in need of adjustment. You can then defragment them, and the paging file, using a boot-time defragmentation. If the MFTs are not big enough then you increase the likelihood of fragmentation and performance can suffer as a result.

IN DK9 open "Change your settings" then choose Configure MFT/Paging file. The program will tell you if the MFTs need to be padded (made bigger) and I suggest you use the advised setting. If it doesn't respond to the change then set a higher value manually in the box. After re-boot the program should take over and adjust the MFTs automatically from then on.

When you come to uninstall DK9 PRO it will revert to your normal XP Defrag. Both the XP Defrag and Diskeeper 9 Professional are made by Executive Software.

I have had to pad the MFTs on a number of drives as they were too small and not allowing sufficient addressing on the drive. This seems to be a recurring problem when rezizing partitions.

TuneUp Utilities is a good program for MAINTAINING the registry too.

Now that you have a fresh install you should condider making a drive image and also backing up your data.

I use the Partition Resizer which comes with BootIT NG from TeraByte Unlimited (see link below). If you get the full BootIT NG SUITE, you also get Image for Windows and Image for DOS so you can resize partitions, make drive images and backups to CDRs or data DVDs and restore them.

So add these items to your Christmas Present list!

Solve : restore boot partition?

Answer»

I'm using WinXP Pro on partitioned HD. I INSTALL a lot of trial software, look at it, then delete it. After a while my registry gets loaded. I'm using a partitioned HD, boot partition is currently 6MB. I'd like to image the boot partition onto a 2nd HD, periodically reformat the partition, and then using a control program on a disk, restore the boot partition to some previous state. I realize that recent programs will have to be reinstalled, but not a problem. Is there a control program that will let me do this?

Have a new copy of Ghost 2003, but read it has problems. Also have Drive Imager XP and Drive Cloner XP, but I don't see how they'll do what I want.

Suggestions please.

Also have Drive Imager XP and Drive Cloner XP try looking at the read me file......or download nero burning rom and create an iso image of your disk......Sorry I didn't respond before now. I reread the help FILES, and did additional searching. It appears that the solution to my problem is in setting up a WinXP/WinXP dual boot. I should then be able to use a variety of software solutions, including WinXP backup, Xcopy, and DrvimageXP. Thanks.Quote

Thanks, you're correct on 6GB.

I've tried much of what you're suggesting, I'll try more. For a couple of additional reasons, it seems like I can solve all of my problems by using dual boot with 2 WinXP partitions, and restoring my primary boot partition from a good backup I made early on. I'll have to reinstall the few programs I installed since then, and am currently using.

Solve : PSX Emulation?

Wassap people, long time since my last post. I recently downloaded a Playstation emulator. I got all the necessary files to use it. When I put in a disc, it reads like normal but there is one problem. The emulator EMULATES the game way to fast. Its like there is a fast foward type of deal GOIN on. Anyone have experience in this type of stuff? How do I fix this guys?Have you checked the emulator configuration and manual? That I have done. Nothing about super speed emulation, lol. My plugins look like theyre normal and nuttin outta the ordinary. They are pretty good plugins. Well, what now? There are certain applications that can slow your computer down. It allows you to use older programs and play older games that would normally run too fast.

A random google search:

Solve : MSN Messenger log-in registry value?

Answer»

Where would the log-in data (names) be stored for MSN Messenger?

I have removed all MSN Messenger related values and keys I could find in the registry, yet, I was unable to clear the list.

It can not be done through conventional methods either. It will not allow me to.

Uninstalling and reinstalling does not yield a positive effect.

At my wits end here!

The only time I ever managed to clear the list, was when my computer had crashed and it removed most of my personally stored information such as E-mail client and browser settings.

RaptorRaptor .......Have a look in Windows messenger as well , I have a idea that possibly the settings end up in both there and MSN messenger as well ....( I'm not sure about that though)

dl65 The Messenger service is disabled and the application uninstalled. It should normally be located under C:\Program Files, correct?Raptor ....... Yes ....as a check click START / All programs and see if it shows up in the list .

dl65 It is not present. I made certain of that quite a while AGO.

Other suggestions? How about uninstalling, then DELETING everything you can find, then doing a registry search for offbeat terms that msn may use and finishing off with a couple of registry cleaners.

Sort of like when you need to completely remove a trial program in order to get another free trial.

That is correct. MSN leaves a lot of entries and it seems to modify many. However, I removed as many as I could find and it would not help at all.

And.. Welcome!

Done, no success. I believe that the reason registry scanners do not find the log in details is because they are not directly related to MSN Messenger. They may be related to .NET services.

http://www.richardsramblings.com/archives/2002/11/000278.htmlI have allready stated that Messenger is removed. My problem concerns the names in the MSN Messenger log in list.Uninstall the leftover installation information file by typing "rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf"

The complete spysoftware system winxp......msn is logged with m$oft......No dice.

Did not remove the log in entries.

I believe I was able to simply remove them on the Laptop I used, but why it is not POSSIBLE on the Desktop computer is beyond me..

Any other ideas?

Solve : MS Office problem?

Answer»

Hello

I have Windows XP Home and on there I have got Office (Student - Teacher edition) 2003. However recently I have NOTICED that Word has gone from my Start menu. I tries right click> new Word document, and putting that in the Start menu but that does not work.

I also tried uninstalling Office and reinstalling it but that didn't work either

Any help would be welcomed!!You can create a new shortcut for Word in your Start menu by taking the EXACT steps followed hereafter:

1. Start
2. Explorer or My Computer
3. X:\Documents and Settigns
-- Where X:\ is the letter of your Hard Disk Drive
4. User
-- All Users for all users
5. Menu Start
6. Programs
7. Right click
8. New -> Shortcut
9. Press the browse button
10 Search for the Microsoft Office path
-- Most LIKELY located in X:\Program Files
11. Select the MSOffice.exe file.
-- May be named in an alternative manner.
12. Finish the Shortcut wizard

Quote

11. Select the MSOffice.exe file.

Can't FIND it
Then you will have to search harder as I can not pinpoint to you exactly where it is. You will have to remember the path you have chosen to install Microsoft Office and locate it. From there, you will have to search through the folders until you have located the .exe file you need. The Word executable is named winword.exe

My 2¢ worth. Darren:

To find Microsoft Word, try right-clicking one of the icons for a different MS Office program, like Excel and choose properties.

In Excel Properties, click the Find Target button. This will open the folder where Excel and Word are found. Write down the path and use it next time you browse for Microsoft Word to create a shortcut on your start menu.

Regards,
DocOr, do a search for winword as just sidewinder suggested and write down the path.

I'd suggest paying him more than 2 bits for his good advice.

It's now working - thanks for al the help!!

Solve : Deleted documents.....or something like that..?

Answer»

Okay yesterday my computer just MANUALLY restarted. I wasn't too worried because it always does that. Maybe I should have told my dad when it started doing that ? But then when it came on...it was like it had reinstalled Windows XP. Everything was new. I was really worried and then checked My Computer: C:\ Documents and Settings and then my name. THANKFULLY my documents were all still there! Then Windows Update told me it was because I didn't update my C:\Audio SYSTEM that it might have done something like that. I wanted to fix my computer so I pressed *update* and then waited. When it restarted my old desktop was back, so was my other stuff BUT THEN MY DOCUMENTS WERE GONE. I searched everywhere, and even pressed system restore a lot. I don't KNOW what happened but is there a way I can fix this, or are my documents (which are really important for me) lost forever? Basically all I care about are my documents =\. If you can help me..please do Can you not access your documents by going to

X:\Windows\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents?Errm it says it cannot be found??
You will have to fill in X and user yourself as these will vary per user.Right I did that for user, and if you mean changing X to C, I do have my pictures but insid the pictures there's nothing, like the computer just restarted..?X may indeed be C yes.

If the files are not located there and you have searched through all folders, they are most likely removed. Certain system crashes can produce such effects.

You should always back up important data on seperate partitions/Hard Disk Drives.

What you can try is to use this program. It might be able to RECOVER the removed files. However, I can offer no quarantees.Re-boot pc......But I wouldn't be able to get my pics back would I?Perhaps you would if you use the program that I recommended.I tried using the program, but it didn't help me find my documents back. It gave me something like C:\Documents and Settings\Julia\TEMP\filenamehere.gifTake the following steps

1. Start program
2. Click on any document you wish to retrieve
3. Press the undelete button.

If there are no documents shown in that list where you previously stored them. They're gone.

you could hide the files in the windows system.....for example....click my computer....then click the local DISK now got to tools folder options. view....scroll down and tick the show all hidden files and then just reverse the process....and your files will be hidden....or you could try this>http://www.pcsoftland.com/utilities/encryption-tools/Masker.htmIn EXCHANGE Server, there is, or used to be, a checkbox you could use to MARK messages in a folder Unread even if users looked at them, so long as the messages weren't modified.

If you are talking about personal versions of Outlook, this can still be done using a macro. A look at VB help shows that the property setting involved would be "objMailItem.unread = True"
so it's definitely possible, but you will need someone with the object hierarchy, etc. fresh in their mind actually to implement it for you.

(fyi I am running Win 98SE)

In the properies of the file;
the file type is: PICS Rules File
the DOS name is: ARMADA.PRFThe admin tools are not embeded in win98//~.....only win2k/xp/pro/2003 server.....cant remember.....is ms outlook ........a separate program >>on its own ... i never used it......is it ms outlook.....or outlook express....

You can use TH old favourite the f8 key on boot and chose the last good CONFIG ......yawn......

Or deleve into this lot>http://www.kayodeok.btinternet.co.uk/favorites/kbofficeoutlook.htm#kbtshootDo you still have the evil file?

Try searching your computer for *.PST files & see what it finds, and in which folders. These are the files Outlook keeps all of your data in. Also search for *.DBX files. Even if some of your information has gone FOREVER, it may be possible to recover some of it.

Solve : WANTED: A Good DVD Player for Comp?

Answer»

i tried wmp10, but i dont get how it works and there are LINES on the lower quarter of the screen. i tried DIVX, but i dont think its for DVD's. i also tried NVDVD but it sucked, some kind of error message. so could ANYONE please recommend a good DVD player ?PowerDVD and WinDVD are the most common commercial programs. I have used both and they are similar and good.

You frequently get a copy of one or the other when you buy a retail DVD, DVDRW, or CD/DVD combo drive. If you want a completely free player, you could try VLC Media Player. It is extremely competent at all sorts of things, including STREAMING media over a LAN. It also plays DVDs.

I've not personally tried it, but it's free, so why not give it a shot? There's a >fairly active forum< where you can find more out about the player, and get help.

Having read through the huge feature set, I'm going to download it myself. Looks pretty impressive.ill give vlc media player a shot... i hope it supports surround sound.

thanks for the info guys. Yes it does. As I said, it is astonishingly competent. The interface is not as slick as the commercial offerings, though.UPDATE: I am blown away by VLC Media Player. It hasn't yet made it to version 1, but already does a lot of things that my version of WinDVD PLATINUM doesn't do. The interface is a bit bland and quite text-based, but the lack of bloat shows. This is very quick, clever software, and I'm adding it to the Software FAQ immediately.

Solve : Converting opera sessions for use in firefox?

Answer»

Hi! I've posted this question in a COUPLE of forums already with no RESPONSE. Hopefully I will have a better experience here?

I've just decided to ditch Opera in favour of Firefox (so I can use Roboform). As I have quite an extensive collection of Opera sessions that I frequently refer to, I was wondering if ANYONE knows if it is possible to covert Opera sessions for use in Firefox? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Please help, as now my HD is full and I need to jettison unused software. [smiley=undecided.gif]I don't think this can be done as you have tried importing without success:

http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/474676-converting-opera-sessions-use-firefox.html

Maybe someone will have a MIRACLE ANSWER though. No, I'm pretty sure that can't be done (unless someone has written a script so that Opera sesions can be loaded by the Firefox Sessionsaver extension, which I doubt).

How big is your hard drive, by the way?

Solve : Removing Pornography?

Answer»

Does anyone know of a way to rid this entire planet of pornography and to remove ALL pornographic content from the Internet?

Sex with animals!!!

Has anyone examined the entire range of pornography which is available?

What is your opinion of it?

Please post this question on ALL other computer forums.Misclicked on a link whilst surfing Mac?

When you wish to view public transportation routes in Hollland, one types the adress 9292OV.nl. However, when you type ov.nl (Which many people, do since they do not expect the number 9292 to be part of the adress) you end up on a website with rather explicit material.

Not too long ago, I read of an article in a prominent [free] newspaper that said something in the lines of Certain person looking to make pornography less of a taboo with catholic youth because it can enhance sex life.

I have always wondered what kind of people would attempt to do such things. A movement which regards marriage as one of the most important (Well, at least they say they do, most catholics I have spoken to seem to think otherwise. Perhaps they are not Catholics.) subjects in life, and this certain person is making an attempt to break the taboos of adultery and fornication?

For starters, we could ban MTV. That truly is a den of evil, you must agree. You lost me when you mentioned a toilet.

So, what's your cunning plan to rid the world of all pornography? Most people I know and who claim to be raised Catholic or are Catholic do not even seem to know anything about their own religion. Or they do not accept the beliefs. I think they are doing a good job theirselves.

However, I very much doubt that Pornography is part of a Catholic conspiracy.. It is more DUE to the morality of todays society. Of which many members are either godless or atheistic.More of a conspiracy about resources, ever since the holocaust and after 'Lord' Longford 'legalised' pornography and 'befriended' Myra Hindly, the British Moors murderess.

Permissive Immorality (PI) due to a long history of 'selling indulgences', PI in the sky.

These people are ONLY concerned with 'beauty' but I don't see what pornography and beauty has to do with education and morality. In the 'first half' of the life of the Earth people went to church on a Sunday.

In the second half of the life of the Earth the World was given over to Satan, they who pray on a Saturday.

But it is also a play on words. Pray translates as prey.

Slips in the use of religious language turn predicant into predi-c**t, so these people aim to predate beautiful women.

Cant is also a religious term. See: http://php.iupui.edu/~asimmon/thief.html

Basically it is simple hypocrisy.Even the use of the CATECHISM is known to be a form of brainwashing, btw.Note that Catholicism is a MOTHER and Son religion and not a HUSBAND and Wife religion.Mar sin é....

I have never given pornography that much thought. It is now rife everywhere. Sickening! There are excellent methods and software available to prevent pornography from being DISPLAYED on your system if that is what bothers you.HELP! I think the baby Jesus is trapped in my computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P*** off to selfrighteouschristianbastards.com if you want to talk about religious issues.

Solve : how do i convert ntfs to fat32??

Answer»

if i want to revert back to win 98 from win xp....how do i CHANGE my file system?
You will have to reformat your HARD Disk Drive.True, you can only CONVERT FAT32 to NTFS under Windows XP, and not the other way around, but there are several 3rd-party utilities, such as PartitionMagic + many more that will do this. Of course, most of them COST money.I should have mentioned, if you actually want to run WIN98 instead of XP, you must of course do what Raptor said.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q303661/

Solve : DVD Xcopy Express?

Answer»

Please can you help me. I purchased DVX COPY Express on 6th January this year, but, although I installed it, I did not have any immediate reason to use it. I opened the program and attempted to register it a few days AGO but it will not accept the Licence ID and password given inside the box. The product has cost me over £16.00 and I now find that it is useless to me. Amazon, through whom I purchased it, directed me to contact the retailers, but they have not replied. The Xcopy website offers no help at all and the technical support link does not work.
What is it you wish for us to do? Provide you with a new serial or registration number?
PeckStone.....Try this one ..........

Phone activation pssword ....... 306368780

License ID ........... 1352794304

PM me if that doesnt work

dl65 DL, this is not a Warez FORUM...

Now I know a young lad like you has the need to rebel against the powers that be, but please, your hormones will settle down some day.

what version of dvx copy express is it.......no moans here Thanks everyone! I still can't get it working, but I've eventually had a reply from the company that I purchased it from, and they have said I can send it back to them for a refund. I don't know quite whats going on with DVDXCopy web-site and phone registration tel.no.(321 STUDIOS), but the number given is wrong and the registration and technical internet links don't work at all. When you go direct to the web-site there is no help at all with software registration. It just tells you to go to the retailer. The product does not have a 'version' number, so I guess there was only ever one version of it?if you are looking for a program to back up your personal dvd's try something like CloneDVD2 it works very well.......... I have converted my old vhs home movies to dvd and made copies for family members and it works great.
