The reading of English literature, poetry and prose had deep influence on the thinking of Braithwaite. He was identified with the British heroes of adventure stories. In America the nature of anti-negro tendency is open, rough and noisy. Any white man must have a proper cause to show his prejudices against the black man. On the other hand the American negroes can openly oppose these prejudices as they have constitutional devices available to them. Besides, they fight these biased feelings of the white man with zeal and enthusiasm. Obviously, the rest of the world may question the anti-negro tendency being followed by America. But their country has given them lots of opportunities to develop in their life.

Braithwaite believed in the British way of life for the long twenty-eight years.The same ideal supported him when he was in high school. In his school days he had to work hard to make the grade. The same ideal also helped him in college and university also. So, he never thought of acquiring the American citizenship.

Braithwaite had grown up British in every sense. His family knew no other way of living and thinking. He had never heard of his father or family complain about being British. As a result, he had become bold enough to resist any criticism of British or British policy.

ऐसे लोग अपने जीवन के हर क्षेत्र में ब्रिटिश मानसिकता के साथ पले बढ़े थे। उनके परिवार वाले इसके अलावा अन्य किसी भी विचारधारा और जीवन शैली को नहीं जानते थे। उसने अपने जीवन में अपने माता-पिता और परिवार के अन्य किसी भी सदस्य के मुंह से ब्रिटेन की कोई भी शिकायत नहीं सुनी थी। परिणामस्वरूप, वह एक दृढ़ विश्वासी बन गया था और उसके अंदर इतनी क्षमता आ गई थी कि वह ब्रिटिश अथवा ब्रिटेन की किसी भी नीति की आलोचना का करारा जबाव दे सके।

In Britain the negroes are considered as a ‘darky’, ‘Nigger’ or a ‘black’. These words are humiliating words for the negroes. In fact they can ride buses and trains if they have paid the required fare. They can also take shelter in the hotels or boarding places. But sometimes they may encounter polite refusals at hotels are boarding places. In English there are several negro doctors, lawyers and talented entertainers but they are treated as the different from the mass. On the other hand, the Negroes in America are provided with constitutional devices to right prejudices against the white men. Moreover, they are provided with all opportunities to rise in life and increase their income. They also enjoy a greater sense of social and religious independence also.

He came to England for post graduation study in 1939. In England his deals matched with the atmosphere of the country. Without hesitation he was confident that he could enjoy all fairness tolerance and freedoms for which the country stood. So, he willingly offered his service with the British Royal Air Force and he was ready to lay down his life to protect his ideal.

The British way of life is the identification of oneself with British loyalties, beliefs and traditions. This notion can be experienced in the country’s system of law, education and government. The same principle was being followed by the Britons in colonies.

The majority of the natives of Britain have different appreciation of the British way of life meant to the colonial people. They have little regard for the fantastic phenomenon of the colonial people who are widely spread over the globe. They feel pride to identify themselves with the British loyalties, beliefs and traditions. Although, they are different in color, they like to adopt the British fashion in dress and social codes. Their entire knowledge is based on second hand information which is not given due recognition by the Britons at home.

ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के उपनिवेशों के अधिकांश नागरिकों को ब्रिटिश जीवन शैली अलग-अलग ढंग से थी। संपूर्ण संसार में फैले उनके उपनिवेशों के रहने वाले जो अत्यंत रमणीय वातावरण में जी रहे थे, को अपनी सभ्यता और संस्कृति के प्रति उन दिनों बहुत कम सम्मान था। उन्हें ब्रिटिशों की परंपरा, उनकी धारणा में विश्वास था और यही वजह है कि वे उनके विश्वासपात्र बनने की भरपूर कोशिश करते। ऐसा करने में उन्हें गर्व का अनुभव होता। हालांकि वे शारीरिक रंग-रूप में उनसे पृथक थे फिर भी ब्रिटिश फेशन, उनके परिधान और सामाजिक रीति को अपनाना पसंद करते। यद्यपि उनकी संस्कृति के वारे में उन्हें जो कुछ भी ज्ञान था वे सब के सब सुनी-सुनाई बातों पर आधारित थी, जो उसी रूप में ब्रिटिशों द्वारा अपने यहां नहीं किया जाता था।

The colonial people try to express themselves as the Britons. The British way of life can be observed in British system of law, education and government in the colonies. The colonial people also try to adopt dress and social codes of the English people. But they have no proper knowledge of such ideas.
