Solve : pc hangs during shutdown?

Answer»

Try this patch: HTTP://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307274

also be sure your POWER settings are not set to go into hibernation mode when indeed you want it to shutdown, that patch btw comes as part of SP1, so perhaps if you don't have that hotfix, it may be the ticket

Also know that certain older versions of Easy CD Creator cause the system to hang LIKE that. Cheers!updating your bios won't correct the problem.

Neither will buying RAM...

Its a software conflict. I was looking up info on this.

This is how you correct it. I'm sure it will WORK!!!

Solve : Reduced size network card?

Answer»

I have a Dell 4600C that has a BUM, integrated network jack. I need to add a network card, but apparently need a reduced size card. Any ideas in make and model that would fit my PC?I see what you mean.

All modern network cards are much shorter than the bracket.

Your Dell™ computer provides a slot for one LOW-PROFILE, 32-bit, 33-MHz card.

FA311-Low Profile Network Card
I believe Realtek makes even smaller NIC half the size of that Low profile NIC you showed. However, I can not think of the name at the MOMENT.

Solve : Sony CRT screen goes blank????

Answer»

I am having a problem on my 4 year old Sony e-200. I start the comp, and after about 30-45 mins. , the screen slowly goes black! sometimes it comes back after a few mins. and sometime I have to turn off the monitor for a few seconds and everthing is fine. Then it repeats after maybe 20 mins. or 5 hours later?
Screen is beautiful as always, when it is lite-up!
Any help?? CRT 17 in. Sony E-200 4-5 years old!
Thanks , Michael
ps: it almost seems to be the monitor is timeing out, and fades out to a blank screen, but, there is NO set period of time when this happens??Check power SAVE SETTINGS.lose graphics card.......or serial plug from tower to monitor...Checked graphics card ok, and cord to tower, moved it AROUND and all it did was freeze up comp. It was tight.
"So very happy it is not my monitor though. "
I have a Compaq 7AP140 from Compaq direct.

Right now I am looking at a great screen.

michaelTest the monitor on another computer. For some srange reason it seems to be slowly going "blank",, less often. Now mainly right after I start up the computer. Happens 3-4 times, and then OK for the next 5-6 hours with no going blank.
It least not all the way blank, just fades to very DIM, and then comes back up!
Thanks to all you,
Sincerely, Michael
ps: there is a newer driver for my
RAVA  TNT2 model 64 pro called  71.84..
But I have had situations when update drives sometimes make thing worse!

Help!! Quote

But I have had situations when update drives sometimes make thing worse!

That may be caused by an unstable OS environment. Users fault more often than it actually is the drivers fault.

However, since videocard manufacturers constantly release new drivers, the solution for whatever has bothered you in the past is, if it is a known ISSUE, no doubt included.

If you play games or make use of video editing software, it is highly recommended that you install the latest videocard drivers.roll back video drivers..........and power set the monitor to never..... Quote
...cord to tower, moved it around and all it did was freeze up comp. It was tight...

Well, there's your problem.  Bad connection.  It might be tight, but somewhere it's broken.

Solve : Strange Beeping Sound?

Answer»

My computer has recently started making a medium-pitched BEEPING sound at irregular intervals.  I've tried restarting and leaving it off for a while.

My most recent hardware addition was a CD/DVD burning drive a little over a month ago.  However, the beeping sounds has just started in the last couple of days.

Any advice?check your motherboard manual.  Somtimes the beeps mean theres a problem.  Check and make sure you fans are all spinning FREELY.

when does it beep? from start up or after windows (i assme your running windows) loads?Make CERTAIN no fans are obstructed.

What is the CPU and case temperature measured at the times of the beeping sound?

Solve : Computer locks up and shuts down randonly.?

Answer»

My computer is locking up and shutting down randomly.  When this happens it won’t boot up until I remove the ram and reinsert it. Then it works just fine for a while but, as before, it will suddenly SHUT down and I have to redo the process mentioned above to get it to work again.   I’m using Windows XP Professional.

Is the ram at fault or am I just doing something that I’m unaware of to fix it (like resetting something by removal of the ram)? If it is the ram, is there anyway I can test it?

Thanks in advance…

MikeIs your power supply fan running?

Is your cpu fan running?More information is required.

When has the problem first occured? Both fans are working.  I took the side cover off and used a room fan for additional air.  The maximum temp of the cpu was 98 degrees F when the computer failed. I have a pentium III chip and a JETWAY mother board.

I removed all the progams I had on the machine and reformated the hard drive.  No problems on that.  I then installed Windows XP Professional with SP2, and again, no problems with that.  I did a chkdsk on the hard drive and that came back with no problems. It has a hard 40GB hard drive that is partioned 5GB FAT and 35GB NSFT (not sure if NSFT is the correct term but it's the "other" file system).

It seems that the problem starts if I'm running a program that has lots of number crunching. For example, I put on PhotoShop 7.0 and loaded a really big file, then I did an image size change and made it something like 1400 pixel per inch.  It will work for a while but then suddenly stops and reboots.

The strange thing is that when it fails it won't reboot right away unless I wiggle the ram. If I let the computer sit for a while it will startup just fine without any "wiggling" of the ram cards.

If I run IE6.0 I usually don't have any problems of it rebooting.

Is this possible:  Can the heat sensor (if there is such an animal on it)  for the cpu or other be broken and is SENSING a critical heat value that isn't really there and shutting down the computer?

This is driving me NUTS!!!!!The cpu  temperature is very high........have you cleaned the dust from it lately? run  diagnostics>http://www.active-hardware.com/english/misc/sandra.html QUOTE

98F (37C) is normal.
From you description, it sounds like a bad RAM connector.  When the computer warms up, it expands and some of the connections to the RAM module are lost.  Could you have possibly damaged the RAM connectors at some POINT in time?

Solve : Monitor damaged by magnet?

Answer»

Hi,
This relates to a tv I use for my computer screen.
I am very fond of this tv and really don't want to chuck it out, but it has been damaged for a couple of MONTHS now by a magnet. There is a large purlpe blotch that occured a while ago.
For a bit, it faded, but now it is stubborn and it wont go away!
Is there a cure? From my experience, I can only say that the discolouring will dissapear after two weeks or more. However, I have never kept a magnet near a TV. Only to a CRT monitor.Ah well, I guess i'll have to chuck out my trusty 20-year-old ferguson (MADE in britain) cream coloured tv/monitor >sniff<
Unless anyone else has any other SUGGESTIONS?packard-bell monitors also did have this problem....speakers attached to the side of them.....does this monitor....has degass button.....or is to old......what pc is it connected to.......SYSTEM info....It is a TV, Merlin. Not a monitor.oyeah......oops     i use to attach my old amiga to the 28inch tv.....and it did not have a degass button....not EVEN when the wife wanting to watch it

Solve : Blurry Monitor?

Answer»

My monitor just went bad after 9 months. Everything is readable but blurry (like reading newspaper WITHOUT reading glasses). Color and SHAPES are fine. Computer is about 5 YEARS old. Monitor problem or video card? How do I troubleshoot? The monitor is most likely USED up.

You could test the monitor on another computer, but are the results the same as on the other PC then there is little chance of it RETURNING to its normal state.

You may also try degaussing.

Solve : Changing the IRQ of hardware devices in XP?

Answer»

Windows XP does not let me configure the IRQ of devices such as the soundcard. The option to do is simply greyed out.

Quite a while ago, I was able to CHANGE the I/O adresses, however, they would jump back to their default settings as soon as I clicked OK.

What could be the cause of these two problems and how do I solve them?

Raptor ......This might possibly solve the issue .

dl65   Quote

Note that Windows 2000 and XP cannot rebalance resources in the same WAY that Microsoft Windows 98 does. After PCI resources are set, they generally cannot be CHANGED.

Then why does Microsoft recommend you change IRQ settings should a conflict have occured?Well IRQ's - Prioritizing

Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl. Create a new DWORD value called IRQ8PRiority and set the data to 1, reboot.

And what exactly will that do?read  your post that you have written!

That doesn't quite answer my question, Merlin.

I assume that from what you are trying to tell me, you are saying the options will be avaible again. Correct?

Yes:).........backup reg before making any changes
as always...........
Adding that registry value did NAUGHT but making Internet images load slower..This may shed some light:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315278&FR=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH

Good luck. That does indeed explain.

Are you not able to change IRQ settings either, Sidewinder?Either I've been incredibly lucky or XP really knows what it's doing. Haven't had any conflicts either with this laptop (xp home) or my desktop (xp pro). Which is good cause I wouldn't know how to go about fixing.

I was under the impression that the HAL checked out all your devices and assigned the IRQ's accordingly. This laptop has 9 devices on IRQ 10. From what I read, XP does not rebalance the IRQ's like Win98 did.

You can force another HAL during installation (I guess this is for the DIY crowd):

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299340/?FR=1

Is your soundcard in conflict?

I wish to lower the IRQ of my soundcard to an IRQ below 10 or 7. This will help me better configure the sound drivers for older games, as they often do not allow you to go higher than 7 or 10.

Although often IRQ 5 or 10 will work for SoundBlaster Pro configuration, but the sound is choppy.

Am I wrong in thinking that lowering the IRQ would help solve this problem?

I think I shall leave it up to HAL, not quite worth reformatting...either remove the sound card from the device manager and re-boot >>and see ifwinxp allocates an new irq for it ........or take the card out and put in in another port....

Solve : Magnetic Screwdriver?

Answer»

My fan has become really LOUD. So, I thought its about time to clean the inside of my computer and the fan. But what I did was, I opened up the fan case using a magnetic screwdriver (Idiot Me). I did not touch any of circuits and actual hardware with the screwdriver. I did it this morning and every things seems fine except that firefox is ACTING up. Unto the question: I was wondering am I likely to see any damage done to my computer later on?

Thank youThe connection between Firefox and your magnetic screwdriver should  be practically non-existant.

What kind of problems do you have with Firefox?I KNOW that there wasn't going to be connection to firefox, but I was just wondering would the magnetic screwdriver do anything to actual MOTHERBOARD, graphics CARD etc. I was wondering maybe if I would come across hardware problem from the magnets in the future, because my computer seems alright, but has only been a few hours after I used the screwdriver?

Thank you
There are magnets inside a pc case......power supply unit and cpu fan........

A minimal wattage of 300-350 is recommended. 400 is more than adequate for most modern PCs.

I suggest you use the following calculator to see how much power your PSU must be able to provide your system with:

Solve : web cam questions?

Answer»

Hey, i had a general question here. im doing some work for a friend and it deals with webcams. so this is the current situation. he WANTS to put a webcam in his clients house who lives a good DISTANCE AWAY, and he wants to be able to view it from his computer at work/home. how would i go about setting this up and what would be involved? anyhelp WHATSOEVER would be greatly appreciated. Thankswhy does he need to do this?.......whats wrong with remote access......he would need software to run a webcam......and the pc left on......Kinky.

You would have to connect any [simple] webcam to the computer, leave the computer on and most likely use a program that allows you to REMOTELY connect. As Merlin pointed out.

something as simple (and free) as Yahoo Messenger will allow you to do that. How will it?

Solve : Drive Still Alive?

Answer»

This is kind of hard to explain, but here goes.

Basically, my hard drive *works* but because it was in a machine that broke, and because my meddling probably made it worse, it seems to be in a state whereby the operating system is not PROPERLY installed on it.

If I try and put it in a machine as the master drive, I can't boot up.

I am now embarking on a self build, and want to use the drive. I guess I just want to totally WIPE the drive (if it isn't wiped already) so it is like NEW when I put it in my new build.

How would I do this anyone?

Many thanks for any posts!
Kop442000If you have issues with it booting, then there are a couple of ways to go about reformatting it. But probably the easiest is just to slave it to ANOTHER pc, then right click it after you find it in My Computer and reformat Or you can goto DOS and fdisk it from there provided you have another drive (such as a floopy "A") to select it from. Also ANY operating system should give you the option to reformat and do a clean install. CHEERS!When this drive boots up......it should display No Operating Stytem Found........if it does not.......format it..load a boot disk A:\> format c /s   or format c: the fdisk it.....Well the weird thing is..

I did put it as a slave in another PC, and windows said it had found it, but then it never appeared in my computer.

Even though it was there in device manager!

Don't know how to get around that.

Having said that, I now understand what I need to do if I want to wipe it, so thanks guys.what ide cable is it on.........it own one? what the make of this drive.......not a maxtor please......don't forget the jumper settings when slaving to another pc. Cheers!

please help.... i am a new comer to the pc land!!! i have just been given a dell pentim 4 pc with only windowsxp and office installed... i was told that i need to get a modem to be able to access the internet... i havent got a clue which one to get and what to do with it.. i am assuming that i need an external modem??  i would like to  be able to go for dial up connection if this helps?? please help me as i am not clued up thankyouIf you went for broardband most isp supply you with  an ADSL modem...in with the deal....is cheaper to go broardband than dial up.....if you wish to for dialup...currrys/dabs/etc sell 56k modems....which plug in the port in your pc case......Well friend....yes there are two types of modems. One is external and other is Internal. The internal Modem connects to the board through PCI slot (normally white in color on the motherboard) and external modem through USB port. External is powerfull, handles more data and has better performance than Internal modem. You can use these modems only if you plan to connect to the internet through Dial Up Connection. If you want to use Broadband or DSL than you must buy Router.
I think this include all the information you need. More information will be provided if required.\
Ok do take care of you and others and be happy.
:-)
DeW
Dr Wahab:If you want to use Broadband or DSL than you must buy *Router*.

To correct your statement......only if you wish to *network your pc* m_2Welcome Scruff, if you were given a Dell, most likely you are already set for internet. Look at the back of you computer to see if there are any input jacks that look exactly like where a phone line can plug in. If that is the case, then simply plug in a line and Voila!!! Be sure to sign up for service though, simply borrow an AOL cd from a buddy (many computer magazines on the newstands also include an AOL installation  cd with 3000 hours or so or even a couple of free months service so you want to go buy a magazine and read the contents of the enclosed cd. IF you do not have a installed modem already (no phone jack INPUTS on rear of pc) simply go out to a computer store and buy the least expensive 56k PCI modem.
The installation process is extremely simple, simply unplug the power supply from computer, open the case, be sure to TOUCH THE POWER SUPPLY (looks like a big metal block inside case where the power cord connects) to ground yourself (to ELIMINATE static discharge from YOU to pc components) and at the bottom look to some long slots, normally light in colour and there will be 4 or so of the them one over the other, simply plug in the modem there (the metal tab on the modem faces to the rear) you may have to remove a metal tab attached to the rear pc plate but it will be obvious. Then close the case, reconnect the power and there you go. The pc will recognize the modem and ASK you for the installation cd. Cheers!P.S> only reason i stated AOL here is for the free service, as once you are ONLINE, you can download the software from ANY provider you want. You can always remove AOL later. Cheers!

Every now and then my screen randomly blacks out, sometimes disabling the mouse (the red light turns off).

Please can somebody help me. I have had this problem for a while and it is really beginning to annoy me. I have tried changing the video card, to no avail.

Thanks in advance. What happens after the blackout?

Solve : Wich graphics Card Plz?

Answer»

Hi
I am of to buy a new card, But out of these wich would you say was the best one to GET, IM of to use it to run games. here is the link to the list of cards, I have looked at.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/6600AGP_Series.htmlCompare the videocards and decide which one fits your budget and needs.

We are not here to do the research you should be doing.I have No idear about video cards, thats why i asked wich you thought was the better of these. I wouldnt know what i was suppose to be researching. But i guess what my real question is, Are any of them better then the card i have now, Or would i only see a slight improvment. The card i have is a PNY Verto™ GeForce FX 5900 XT.

That can not be told unless you post the videocard of your choice its specifications, the specifications of the videocard you currently have and the specifications of the system you intend on using the videocard with.Any of the cards on your link is great, simply look at the enclosed GAME bundle (is any) and price. I would personally go with the XFX GeForce 6600 GT 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP) - Retail (PVT43AUDF7) (GX-044-XF) due to the SLIGHTLY overclocked memory and the 256mb size. Yes it's 50 or so more expensive than the others, but in my opinion, if you are going to play games like Far Cry, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, those games already take advantage of the extra 128 video ram that that card has, and on a side note, i have never had any problems with mine. Cheers!!Ok Cheers Ill get that one.

Solve : Do I REALLY need to do this??

Answer»

I'm using a Dell Dimension Laptop, P4 with 1Gig of RAM to project moving video onto a dual screen format (monitor and projector) AND recording live video at the same time via Magix Studio Pro 2004 Deluxe.  My video has begun to get "jumpy" and slow.

I've been told (by a Gateway tech trying to sell me a new system) that what I REALLY need is a P4 with hyper-threading, as well as the 1 Gig of RAM.  What do you think, do I really need to buy a new system or is it some other problem?

By the way, I'm using WINDOWS XPI notice you said your video has "begun to get jumpy and slow", does that mean it wasn't always like that?

Also is your computer connected to the internet?
If so do you have antivirus sortware installed?
How about anti-spyware?
Have you recently done a scan for both?
Whats the frequency of your processor (megahertz)? And what is the size of your hardrive? Is it full(ish)?
What's your graphics card?

Lol I know thats alot of questions when your looking for answers but the more specific you are the better. And if you don't know any of those I can PROBABLY walk you through how to find out so don't hesitate to ask!Sorry, I should have included all of that.

1.6 Ghz

37 Gig HD with 25 Gig used...

NVidea GeForce 2 Go (video card)

Now that I think of it, the only time it runs smoothly is when we are not streaming the audio into the system.

The system is never on the Net when projecting/recording, but during the week it is.  We do have anti-spyware, etc. and RUN it at least weekly.  The system is clean of viruses too.Lol no problem, it always sems like youve listed everything important untill some idiot comes in and says what about...

Laptop hard drives are usualy slower than desktop hardrives but that might not be a total limiting factor. There are sooooo many differant things that it could be. If you say that the only time it gets chopy is when your streaming audio into the system? Whats the source your recording audio from? A mic or a line input? If line input then is it RCA (the kind of plug you plug into the back of a vcr, not the screw-ons but the other ones)? A POSSIBLE problem, being a laptop it means your audio card (along with almost everything else) is integrated and thus sharing RAM with your processor. But lets not jump the gun here, the first things to try are these:

1: defrag your hard drive

2: do a spyware/virus scan if its on the internet.

3: try shutting down unnecisary processes, you see all those little icons down in the lower right hand corner of your start bar? they eat up your resources. If there is something down there you don't use then right-click on it and hit close, or quit, or turn off etc. BUT if your on the net DON'T shut of your virus protection while your on the net. if your not on the internet but the virus stuff is RUNNING anyway, then shut it off but remember to turn it back on before going back on!

4: also you might want to try turning your windows scheme to a non-xp theme to save prosessing power. To do this right-click on an EMPTY area on your desktop and then hit properties in the drop-down menue that appears. Now go to the "themes" tab and then drop down the menu that has the word "theme" above it and select "windows classic". You'll lose the pretty windows XP stuff but you might gain some power.

if none of these worked and if you have a USB port you may want to try one of these:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1225693&CatId=0

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1034850&CatId=0

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1166030&CatId=0

They range from the inexpensive to the ridiculous. You can probably find similar items all over the place these are just examples. It may cut down on the load by bypassing your internal audio card.

Try the solutions that dont require purchasing something first, then maybe one of the external audio cards. If that still doesnt work then you may indeed need a HT processor. I could think of few better applications for an HT processor than yours. Basicly an HT pretends to be 2 prosessors and so can multitask pretty good.

HTH!Might also wanna take a look at the size of your page file as well, if it too small (or too large for that matter, it affects system performance) though i would defrag, then shutdown my Antivirus, Firewall and any extraeneous programs that may chewing up your system resources. For the presentation that is, not permanantly. Or try 2 gigs ram if you have the space.

As far as that guy telling you NEED a processor with Hyperthreading technology, thats bull, as all that is, is a processor with the ability to split in half for multi-tasking certain programs, BUT they still share the same resources, RAM, FSB etc do NOT split as well. So no, i would NOT listen to him. If you really need to run all that at once, try a MAC. I dont use them, BUT i have several buddies that do and i have seen them run an insane amount of multitasking apps at once with no hiccups. Cheers!Run diagnostics.......type dxdiag in the run box......and place the laptop on a thermal pad or a couple of wooden blocks to improve air flow....>.p4 does  generate loads of heat.....make sure the side fan is not obstructed.....

Solve : Upgrade opinions?

Answer»

}{'lo! I have a question (don't we all ). Im THINKING about uprading one of my MACHINES from this motherboard :

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=20&MODEL=MS-6309+Ver5.0

with a 1.2 ghz celeron processor, TO an AMD Sempron 3100+ / 256K Cache / 1600MHz FSB / Socket 754 / Processor wich runs at 1.8 ghz.

Is this worth it? The improvement in bus speed is huge but the proc frequency isnt that big a differance. And whats all this about hyper transport?

I'll probably be going with a motherboard similar in specs to the one I have ALREADY except with an AGP 8x slot instead of 4x, the improved bus/ram etc.

The main reason I want to go with this particular socket is 'cause later on I can upgrade to 64 bit proc without having to change mobo/ram (just flash the BIOS).

Whats your take on this? How much of an improvement will I gain? What is it you use a computer for?Budget gaming/school/graphic design (paint shop pro and maya PLE).

all of those it runs fair at this time. I'm not realy looking for whether or not it will do what I want it to do but whether it will do it significantly better than what I have now. Bus speed and the hyper transport are my main head-scratchers. I just want to know if that will make it significantly faster than what I have now.The intel celron in my option is rubbish. cheepo cpu and is slow compare to a pent 2.....upgrade to amd....nice mobo Thnx. Oh another question I have; is there any chipset (as in northbridge) that you feel is superior to the others? The Abit NF8 is a great Socket 754 mobo, and if you want to eventually get a PCI-Express videocard later, try the MSI K8N NEO3-F Socket 754. You won't be dissapointed in either one. And it's quiet too, since the Socket 754 Northbridge is fanless Cool thnx for the SUGGESTIONS. Too bad they dont have a mobo that has both an agp and a PCIx slot on it. I recently got a new AGP graphics card and dont want to have to shell out the cash to get a PCIx graphics card when my AGP works just fine. However I'm trying to make this a forward compatible mobo (HENCE the socket 754) so i suppose I should think about the whole pcix fiasco...Realy wish they had a cross over mobo, 1 pcix and 1 agp 8x slot ...One of my client's has a mobo and he had something i never saw before: A PCI-Express adapter with an AGP card in it! Blew me away! I asked him if i could run some benchmarks on his card, and unfortunately the card does NOT run any faster, it's just for being able to seat the card there, furthermore he told me it cost MORE than the mobo itself. So if it was ME, I would definately go with PCI-Express mobo, as there are cheap entry-level vidcards that outperform their AGP counterparts. Cheers and goodluck, keep us posted on how your decision turns out !!!

Solve : BIOS-Hardware monitor????

Answer»

Im getting ready to flash my BIOS and I notice that on the ASUS site it has two versions of the BIOS update, one with hardware monitor and one without.

First of all what is hardware monitor?
2. is it optional?
3. If it is optional is better to have hardware monitor or no hardware monitor? Why are you flashing the bios......HDD not FULLY "recognerized". its a 40 gig and it only sees 32.reformat it...and fdisk it...it may have files still  left on it.....Not the problem, this is the second format that I have done to it (First time it was setting it up as a slave, second time it was setting it up as the master). I know for a fact that my BIOS doesnt currently support 40 gigs  cause it says so on the ASUS site   .Do you have a Pentium II? The hardware monitor is nothing more than what is states, a little program that runs and monitors CERTAIN states of your motherboard (fan speed, temp, etc.) What version of windows are you installing, 98, ME? Write zeroes to the HDD if all else fails in the reformat, it could be that there may be a partition there you missed. Cheers!Im using win 98SE currently and I want those extra 8 gigs so I can dual boot with linux fedora. My specs are:

PII 350 mghz (slow I know but it gets stuff done better than my 300 mghz LOL) 128 ram, an agp 2x SIS graphics card (can get more specs if needed), a creative ISA SOUND card a 40X acer cdrom drive and the 1 40 (32 seen) gig HDD. I could go into more detail but Im feelin lazy lol.

I doubt I missed a partition, I usualy check to see what partitions there are before deleting any, and my BIOS wont even see the HDD unless I set the jumpers on it to 32 gig clip (BIOS just hangs at IDE HDD auto detect).

Oh, another question, can I format those extra 8 gigs as a seperate partition without harming my current partition? Like I said I want to dual-boot fedora and win98se but I REALY dont want to have to reformat my HDD AGAIN, I did that less than a month ago .

So the hardware monitor is optional? Does it run in windows or is it just in BIOS?     The  hardware monitor is a windows program//it may also be called windows resources......you need partition manager to load lynx....partiton magic is one of many.....

Solve : LCD Monitor went blank?

Answer»

My 17" LCD monitor, made by Certified Data is 2 years old and has been working perfectly until I booted the computer the other morning and poof, the monitor screen remained black, although the power light is steady green.

Tried pressing the 'auto adjust' button on monitor - and while it flickered, the screen graphics were gray and even that only lasted a couple seconds before RETURNING to black/blank.  (Now it just stays black all the time when I try).  (And surely the 'driver' wouldn't just go poof over night?)

Sadly, it's not under warranty anymore, and worse, when I called the store it was purchased at, was told that the monitor was made in Taiwan and parts are not always AVAILABLE for repair - eek!

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to assist me - I've borrowed my grandsons teeny tiny 12" monitor and using duct-tape to attach 2 large magnifying glasses to my eyes is not a pretty SIGHT!  Gentle smile.

Working with graphics and photos are so important in my life and  impossible using the borrowed monitor ... I would truly appreciate any help.

With kind regards,
Mara

where are you in the world? mara.......some lcd aint that good........i would go for the old crt monitors......more robust...maybe its time to but another one...hang on a minute most monitors come with a five year warrenty....call the shop where you bought it!.Hi Merlin,

Sadly, I think you may be right about some brands being 'garbage'.  Sigh.

I bought it from a brand name store that has a huge computer department - and this is the store's 'brand name' for computers and monitors - but sadly, it only had a 1 year warranty.

Here in Canada, things seem ever so expensive ... this magical monitor that has gone poof was a gift (and well over $600.00).  Oh well, even having to use magnifying glasses and duct tape  is better than not being able to use my computer - gentle smile.

Kind regards,
Mara     Mara>>I would check the paperwork that came with it.....most monitors are guarrentee for five years?? i would suggest ebuyer.com......and things are ......an arm and leg in canada......cheap here in the uk.....are you lot out there being ripped off.....nice post mara...

To quote a phrase one lives and learns ;)Phone the manager of the shop.....and do a deal...for an exchange unit...and tell them .....600 bucks it should have been GOLD plated.....and say to them i may write to the consumers advice centre.../papers.....you might get a new one due to a malfunction.......STRANGER things have happened......cheer up...Mara McKay...... Despite the fact that a LCD monitor is more space efficient , a CRT provides a much better rendering of colour ........particularly if you do a lot of video and photo work.
One a slightly differant note ......I have several pieces of Certified Data gear......... that work flawlessly .

If your looking for a LCD monitor , have a look at this site ........ http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=12

I visited them in Toronto a while back and was impressed with what they stock .......... Plus they ship almost anywhere .......

Solve : External HDD Freecom FHD2?

Answer»

Recently, the external HDD (USB 2.0/40GB 5400RPM/FAT32 preformatted) has begun to show SIGNS of wear and tear.

However, the HDD is less than 9 months old. It refuses to be detected unless I tilt it on its side. After that, I can lay it back down and it will continue to work.

Occasionally it also causes my computer to freeze whilst booting. Unless I disconnect the HDD, it will not boot.

Are these normal signs for external HDD's or are they perhaps very common to Freecom material?

What could the problems be caused by? The HDD is always connected to my computer. Day and night. It is occasionally disconnected and taken with me when I travel.

My hard is mounted vertical.......less wear on the bearings.....maybe it prefers to be to vertical....But it is not designed to be mounted vertically as it is only 2.5" and very flat. It is lightweight as well, powered by USB only.

Should I not be worried? I MAY demand a refund as I do not TRUST the HDD, but I do not have the receipt.send it back.......check drive health......when in doubt recover the data and call support line. you may want to check with www.maximumpc.com forums under Dog Pound, to see if anyone else has had the same problem with your particular model. Cheers!I am aware of MANY others having the same problems. HDDs were a necessity by the place I would study. No HDD, no study. Unfortunately, they also have the receipt so I can not simply return it.

I will see if I can obtain diagnostic software for the HDD. I had not yet thought of doing so.

Solve : System model n/a?????

Answer»

When i went into the dxdiag MENU, adjacent to system manufacturer and system model, it states not available.

I want to improve the ram on this computer but to that, well you guys know already.

im so confused....

I think my comps a dell cause it says right here on the sticker of authencityIt is probably a Dell in that case... You want to add RAM? How much do you have now? How much are you willing to add? How much RAM can your computer handle?

[glb]Flame[/glb]  sry if im pulling your leg, but the ram is 192. I want to improve it to 256. But i cant figure out the model of this dell.  Is there any way in finding out?http://www.active-hardware.com/english/misc/sandra.html
what is the biggest ramstick you have....and does trhe mobo support more ram?Oooo, cool little gizmo... Sadly I get a "page cannot be displayed" error when I click the download link (there another place I can get this merlin??? Could you perhaps provide a direct link to it or e-mail it to me?) .

As for upgrading your ram you will have to know what kind of motherboard you have now.

probably the easyest way to find this out is your BIOS id string; This is a bit of code that is unique to every motherboard/manufacturer. To find your BIOS id string you can use Bios wizard which can be found here:

http://www.motherboards.org/tools/downloads.html

after downloading the BIOS wizard take the BIOS id string it displays and put it in here:

http://www.motherboards.org/tools/moboidtools.html

It might not show up when you put in the whole string. If so, try little bits of it in the "Search By Partial BIOS String ID" box. THIS is important, ALWAYS check to make sure the picture/specs matches what your motherboard looks like/has. If it doesn't MATCH it's not your motherboard (DUH! lol). If it DOES match it might have a manual there or it might not. If not, go over to the manufacturers website (which you should be able to find out on the motherboards.org website from typing in your ID string) and look for your model there. Most likely there is a manual you can download.

this should get you what your looking for. If not, don't hesitate to ask here again!majorgeeks.com for sisoftsandra......or aida32.......

does you ramsticks go something like this...64/64/64I DOWNLOADED the Sandra lite program from a different link. Found out my mainboard was an Abit model BH6. I doubted the results so i took account of Gambits method to confirm it. And it turns out correct.

Thanks for your help, fellas. Never would have made it though without your intelligence.

and yes my memory slots are 64/ 64/ 64. But i guess ill replace one of them with a 256 chip. So that amounts to 384 ram. Hmmm... Im trying to figure out if you need to use PC100 or PC133 ram. WHATS your processor frequency (mghz)?Does it matter? My processor is an Intel Celeron 1300 mhz.

PC 133 is backwards compatible with PC 100. You can also get Belarc Advisor here: www.belarc.com to check the ramsticks (it's kinda like Sandra Lite, On a diet, after a fast...it's a really tiny program that is great for a quick peek at your system)Ahhh ok, didnt know all that about the ram, thnx GRant!

Solve : windows 2000 - sounds play fast?

Answer»

Just inherited a Dell Windows 2000 COMPUTER from a family member.  All works fine except...

almost all sounds (websites with music/sounds, windows sounds from the control panel) play just slightly TOO FAST.  (Like an old record album on a speed just too high).  Music played directly from a CD in the drive plays fine.

Sounds play through 2 Creative speakers (no sub-woofer).

Any thoughts?  It's weird for my kids to play games on websites and have the characters not sound the way they're supposed to...

Thanks!Have you SCANNED for viruses and Spyware? Have you tried updatinf your sound card drivers? Have you tried running a Windows Update?

[glb]Flame[/glb]REINSTALL soundcard drivers. Thanks for the tips - please pardon my lack of knowledge about these topics...

How do I find out what my sound card is?  Once I know that, do I have to uninstall the driver(s) first?  Then, do I just do an internet search for the updated, current driver to install?

BTW, yes, I have an anti-virus running and I frequently run spybot to remove spyware.

Thanks. You have different choices to determine the type of soundcard installed.

1. Through Hardware Mananger

I. Right click on My Computer
II. Select Properties
III. Click on the Hardware Tab
IV. Click on the Device Manager button

2. Through a program such as Belarc Advisor

I. Download Belarc Advisor
II. Install Belarc Advisor
Profile page will be LOADED in web browser.
III. Scroll down and stop when you reach Multimedia.

3. Through DirectX diagnostics

I. Go to Start
II. Click run
III. Type DXDIAG
IV. Go to the Sound tab

Report the name mentioned.DirectX says:

Name: AC'97 Sound Card

Driver: ichaud.sys
Version: 5.00.2160.0001

Incidentally - there is a bar on the Sounds page on DirectX that says Hardware Sound Acceleration Level, and it's set at "standard acceleration" as opposed to "basic acceleration" which is the level below or "no acceleration" which is the level below that.  Does this have anything to do with my problem?

Is this helpful?  Thanks for letting me know what to do next - I really appreciate it!
You can try different levels of acceleration to see if they have a positive effect.I tried different levels - at first I thought it worked - it played sounds correctly on the first website I went to, but after that it is doing the problem again - everything plays just a smidge too fast (and the setting remained at the lower, newer acceleration level), so it seems no effect.

What do I try next?Update the drivers for the card by going to your sound card manufacturer's webiste.

[glb]Flame[/glb]According to the info I found via DirectX, the card is manufactured by Intel.  I went to Intel (and Dell's) websites, but found absolutely nothing about sound card driver updates.

I did find a 3-year-old thread at a different forum which mentioned that lots of people were having this problem with this sound card, and they were able to fix it by updating the driver through Microsoft Windows update and selecting a "soundmax" driver.  I tried doing the update through "driver update" under the soundcard on the hardware tab of "sounds and multimedia" on control panel, but the only drivers it found were repeats of the same intel driver I already have installed.

I did find some soundmax drivers elsewhere online, and tried installing them, but would get error messages during the installation that "driver not found" or "device not found"

Thanks for any other advice you can give Quote

That only works when you have the proper drivers in your possession.

AC'97 Soundcards are not manufacturer by Intel. You were most likely looking at your videocard.

You most likely need to visit the following webpage to find the correct drivers.

Real tek AC'97 Audio CODECs.Thanks for your advice - meanwhile, I had gone to Dell's website and finally found the right support forum for the computer I have.  And, sure enough, I searched and found other posts with the same problem and the replies gave a patch/soundmax driver update designed for the dell computer (the other ones I had tried must not have been for dell, and maybe that's why they didn't work).

All seems to be working properly now!  Let's hope it stays that way!

Thank you so much for all of your quick replies today.Great to hear! Come on back and see us should you have any more questions!

Solve : New Speaker Recommendations?

Answer»

I think it's time to buy new speakers. The ones I have now are pretty OLD and I wouldn't MIND a new speaker system now that the one I have was damaged by lightning, I think. I have a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Extigy so I WOULD prefer Creative speakers. Also, I don't have much room in my room so 2.0 or 2.1 speakers with a subwoofer is best. Actually, I'm looking now and 5.1 might work, it would require some wiring, but I think I would be ABLE to pull it off. So, if you know a good speaker system with a decent wattage and decently priced ($100 is the max I would probably spend, but I have a job so I can stretch that a bit if need be, just no speaker over $200). TIA.Also, if there is a nice pair of 5.1 wireless speakers that would be best so I wouldn't have to go through the attic or make a wire mess in my room. But, something tells me a pair of wireless speakers would be costly.Well for about $150.00 you can get the incredible Logitech Z-5300e (280 watts, THX CERTIFIED!!!) speaker system. It truly is a marvel speaker system, and guaranteed to please.

Solve : Just a question, not really a problem.?

Answer»

I have a computer with two memory slot. I also have two memory sticks, one 512mb, and the other 256. Can I run both of these, or do they have to be the same size? I KNOW older computers had too be, but this is fairly new p4, 2.53MHz, and can hold up to 1G of RAM.They do not have to be equal in amount. However, they do need to be equal in speed for better performance.

As far as I recall, computers have been able to work with unequal amounts of RAM since 1996.. And most likely even further back. When you SAY "size" do you mean what type the RAM stuck is? (ex. PC133) Or do you mean how much RAM it has? As long as your computer supports the type of RAM stick (ex. PC133), then they will both work flawlessly. Also, how much RAM one has comapred to the other makes no difference.. The speed will not be as good, but it will still work flawlessly... I hope this helps... It's confusing lol

[glb]Flame[/glb]same size MB, they are both PC2700.
What do you mean, "The speed will not be as good?"  Will the 512mb, and the 256mb together, run slower than just the 512mb alone?you can run both.....but its best to have them in PAIRS....like 512+512= 1024=+1gig.... it will run but you may experience.....problems....if playing games....in laymans terms....one ramstick is more pwerful than the other one....you can run ANY configuration of RAM sized sticks (provided they are NOT RamBus or Ecc/Non-Ecc as those have to match). Just be sure to place the bigger of the two in slot 1 (it's the slot closest to the PROCESSOR). Also, if they are not the same speed, the faster DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) will default to the slower one's speed. So if you run 1 stick of PC 2700, and another of PC 3200, the faster chip will run at the slower chip's speed of 2700.  And as far as playing nice is concerned, a 1 GIG stick will be VERY friendly to a 32mb stick, so dont ever worry worry about the difference in sizes. But like i said, this does NOT pertain to Rambus or Ecc/Non-Ecc sticks. Cheers!

Solve : 2nd drive not appearing?

Answer»

I have a HD from a broken machine, that works fine, but I am not sure if it was wiped etc. I basically don't know what is on it, but I know it works.

So to try and find out, I tried to install it as a slave drive on my friends computer. I did this, and changed the jumpers (I think) to the CORRECT jumper settings to make it a slave.

The computer BOOTED as normal, and the little balloon in windows came up to tell me that new hardware was found. But when I open "My Computer", only the master is there.

If I go into device manager, both the drives show, and appear to be enabled and working correctly.

What do you think I am doing wrong? I just want to be able to check what is on this Hard Drive. It doesn't work as a master, as I don't think there is any kind of OS on it.

Even if it was blank, it should still be assigned a drive letter, and appear in "my computer" for me to explore, shouldn't it?

Can anyone help?

Many thanks for any replies posted.
Kop442000.How was the HDD reformatted?I am not too sure what you mean by this, but telling you a little about the history of the drive should answer the question.

The drive was a slave in another machine and worked fine. One day I was TRYING to format main drive, but messed something up, and I started getting an ERROR message on boot up that I couldn't overcome. That is all in the past now, as I am building a new machine, but it has left me not knowing what (if anything now) is on the slave drive.

I don't know if I formatted that slave at all, or partially. I am pretty sure it doesn't have an OS on it.

If I try it as a master, I get error messages - I think basically saying it has no operating system.

What do I need to do, to find out if there is anything on this drive?

Hope someone can help.
Kop442000it has told you already........v

its blank in otherwords......What kind of file system was used when the HDD was reformatted before you removed it from the system? Perhaps an older file format system such as FAT16 was used. I do not believe that Windows XP can read such. When you boot up the computer do you see the drive detected by the BIOS?  This can be determined when you see all the stuff Flashing on the screen before windows starts up (you should see each drive being detected)

After booting, check in Disk Management (Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Managment --> Storage --> Disk Managment)  If the drive appears, you may have to mark the drive as being active.

Solve : Westell DSL Modem not recognized?

Answer»

Hi all,

Trying to help a friend here and I have an idea what's wrong...but can't confirm.

He's running an old Dell Pentium 350mhz with 192MB Ram running windows 98SE. He just went for DSL lite from bellsouth but can't get the PC to recognize the modem.

I had him RUN hardware wizard and also power off and on with the device plugged in but it doesn't see it via either USB port. The PORTS are enabled and his digital camera works fine in them. He has no lan capability.

He brought me the modem (a westell 6100) and it works fine on my 2 PCs and windows 2000 recognized the hardware immediately. I didn't need to install a usb driver bcus my westell 2100usb driver worked fine with it. I also tested it on LAN and that works fine too.

I don't think its windows 98SE not working with that modem bcus prior to my new PCs and O/S i ran my westell 2100 modem on W98SE with no problem.

I'm leaning towards a possible BIOS problem with his Dell not recognizing that hardware since its so much newer than the PC. I didn't check his BIOS and am also very leary of even trying to update it to see if that helps (assuming theres an update) bcus of the possibility of a bad flash. I'd hate to take him from bad to worse.

Only thing I can think of is to install a LAN card and try that....but he hasn't embraced that idea yet (don't KNOW why) and still thinks he can get it going on usb. A new PC is on the horizon but not tomorrow so he's workin with what he has.

Any ideas on the usb issue besides my BIOS theory?
(again ports do work with a digital camera)

Sorry for the length but want to be thorough.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Davesee if this cures it.......go into the device manager. click usb host controllers...click properties/click adavanced and untick  the disable  usb correction box......or they other way around.?Did you install the correct drivers? Thanks guys.

Merlin...is your suggestion intended to turn on a USB port that is turned off (they're both on because they both work with a digital camera) or to modify the USB Host controller in some respect that may affect the ports working with other devices?

Raptor...thanks for the suggestion but there is only one
driver on the cd to cover windows in general. The CD wizard won't LET him continue install since it doesn't detect the hardware. I told him to NOT use the CD wizard anyway since it also installs bellsouth broadjump ie plugin which isn't needed (by anyone) and to canel out of the bellsouth wizard when the cd is inserted. Then to direct the Windows hardware wizard to the CD when it asks for a driver.  Problem we're trying to correct is....
windows doesn't detect the new hardware to prompt for a driver in the first place.

Despite my test of his modem at my place coming out fine with LAN and USB ....he was told by bellsouth that it sounds like a modem problem ($3 hr trainees reading a check list) and they sent him anothe modem. I don't need to report the results.

Will look for your reply re: host controller (above) Merlin but frankly I'm hoping he just goes for a LAN card already.

Thanks,
Dave

Solve : Getting a new power supply?

Answer»

I purchased a new computer two DAYS ago and today I bought a NVIDIA GeForce 6800GT OC PCI-E graphics card which requires at least 350W power. I never took out a power supply out before and don't know much about it. After taking mine out I saw that it was a 320W, so I went to a store and got pretty much a random 400W one. I put it inside the computer and started connecting ports, but there was nothing to connect to the hard drive. What do I need to know about my computer to buy the right power supply? And will too much more than enough power damage it? Quote

1. What do I need to know about my computer to buy the right power supply? 2. And will too much more than enough power damage it?

1.

I. You need to know what kind of form factor your mainboard is. Most likely ATX. Most PSU are ATX.
II. You need to know what kind of drive connectors you have. SATA or ATA. Most newer power supplies feature both. If not, you can often obtain ATA to SATA power conversion cables.

SATA is a black thin connector, ATA is a thick white connection with 5 PINS inside the plastic casing.

III. You need to know the amount of Wattages your computer requires. Power Supply Wattage calculator is an excellent web site to do so.

2. A more POWERFUL PSU will not damage system components as it will not attempt to deliver more power unless DEMANDED by your system.

A PSU of 300 Watts or more is recommended for modern systems. Thanks, that explains why I couldn't plug it into the port. Another question, on the power supply box there are powers for AC Input and DC Output. Do I need them to be at certain powers to connect them to the computer or are they there just to SHOW what power are the outputs? Are you referring to the switch that shows either 230 Volts or 115 Volts?
