Solve : Comp Freezes When I Play Games HELP!!?

Answer»

Ok, so I got a new mobo/processor and now my computer games freeze after playing for a while. It varies from one game to another. Half Life 2 freezes after about 30 minutes, Doom 3 freezes after about 10 minutes, and Vampire Bloodlines only froze a few times the whole time I played it. I could go for hours without it freezing. I'll be playing and the screen will just freeze. With Half Life 2, when it freezes I hear an error sound and then I crash back to desktop. When Doom 3 freezes, I have to restart the computer. I doubt it's an overheating problem, because I can immediately start up Half Life 2 again after it crashes and play for another half hour. It doesn't need any time to cool down. Here are my system specs.

Gigabyte K8 Triton Series (GA-K8NS) with NFORCE 3
AMD 64-bit 3000+ running at 2000mhz (10x200)
GEFORCE 4 ti4600 128mb
512mb Ram
Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1
Okia Power Supply 350W

I'm wondering if it's a problem with older and newer hardware, because the mobo and processor are new, but everything else is old. And by old, I don't mean OLD, just not brand new. The info I looked up on the mobo said it was compatible with my old hardware. One thing that is suspicious is that one stick of RAM is 2100 and the other is 2700. Could this be causing a problem? I got the RAM from a friend and didn't know it was two different speeds. Also, the Geforce 4 has a new fan on it. The original fan DIED, so I got a new fan made for Geforce cards and installed it. Technically, it's more powerful than the stock fan. I have to admit though, on the other SIDE of the card, directly opposite from the GPU, it is BURNING hot to the touch. My friend said his graphics card gets that hot in the same spot also, but it still seems odd.

Also, I'm confused. Shouldn't an AMD 64bit 3000+ run at more than 2ghz? I don't see any overclocking options in the BIOS, but when I first hooked the computer up, "Top Performance" was selected and games would crash as soon as I loaded them. I disabled that and now I can play longer. So it seems like some component is old and can't handle certain speeds. Anyways, here's my CPU info according to the program AIDA32.

External Clock: 200mhz
Maximum Clock: 3200mhz
Current Clock: 2010mhz
Voltage: 1.7v

And here's some links to screenshots of the program CPU-Z with info on my RAM and CPU voltages and stuff.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...4/Memorytab.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...SPDSlot1tab.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v...SPDSlot2tab.jpg

I'm also lagging in games I probably shouldn't be lagging in. I run Doom 3 on Medium setting at 800x600 and I lag pretty bad in some spots. And Half Life 2 can get a little laggy in some places on High detail and at 1024x768. Should this system be lagging with those settings? Cause I wasn't expecting to have lag. Especially with Doom 3 on such a low setting.

So what's the deal? Is my RAM holding me back and causing problems? Is there a voltage issue? Should I delete and reinstall DirectX? Please help. I spent a lot of money that I probably shouldn't have spent to update this computer to play newer games and now I can't even play them. Thanks in advance for any help.Where to start
My gut feeling, RAM. (LATER)
I would first do all the things that don't cost money
Latest DirectX, latest sound & video drivers from the manufacturer's websites.

Solve : *censored*, mate??

Answer»

I recently went away on vacation, and when i came back, my computer wouldn't turn on. All that happens when i press power is that everything starts GOING, but the screen remains blank, and some random voice says "System fail due to cpu over processing" and then later the voice says something about failing a PDA test or something... sounds very weird... is there anyone out there who can please help me out? I'm basically going insane.Scratch that, it says "System fail due to cpu over clocking".... que? This better not be a joke.

Reset CMOS.I wish it was a joke... and i have no idea how to do what you just said... I just built this computer with some help from my friends. O and the thing that sounded like "PDA" before is probably something more like "CVA".... i dont know, its been a very disheartening morning. How to enter the BIOS/CMOS

How to clear an unknown BIOS password.

The last article contains instructions how to reset the CMOS. Its weird, i can't get into BIOS because the screen is just constantly black. I'll keep working on it...You did not read the last article thoroughly.Sorry, i stepped out for a bit. What exactly will CLEARING the bios do?restore defaults.......to eminate the overclocking......and that womans voice>System fail due to cpu over clocking Quote

I just built this computer with some help from my friends.

Did your 'friends' or anyone else have access to your computer at any time?
It may still be a joke, apply some pressure on them. HAHAH, no my house was locked w/ ADT, so no joke here. Besides, my friends wouldn't do that. One of them is coming over soon, and we will try to follow all of your helpful ADVICE. What will resetting bios, etc. do? Would it erase everything on my computer?
Resetting the BIOS causes hardware configurations to be reset. HARD Disk Drive files stay intact and so will your operating system.

Solve : Computer freezes after a few minutes?

Answer»

Every time I start my new computer up, it will freeze after a few minutes. Sometimes it takes longer than others. It took a bunch of tries until I got lucky enough for the Windows XP installation to finish. But having Windows set up does no good if it'll freeze after a few minutes anyway. Does anybody know what can cause this and how I can get it fixed?

The computer was bought off eBay. I've been emailing them, but they haven't responded with a solution.more INFO.........on system specs....make model help as well.......hanging/freezing........does it beep on start-up.....display a blue screen with writing on?Everything works PROPERLY until it freezes. It BOOTS up fine, and there's no blue screen, it just freezes. There's always this loud buzzing sound coming from the fan though.. could that be the problem?

I loaded windows XP on my PC after cleaning the hard drive. My DVD WOULD not WORK now. I gues it need some kind of DECODE codes. Where can I get them for cheap.

thanks.
There are many FREE DECODERS.

However, you may wish to look into DVD player software such as WinDVD or PowerDVD. Both are often shipped with Nvidia and ATI/RADEON videocards. Thanks very much. I will try that.

Solve : My Dear Old Mom has a problem...?

Answer»

She's got a Gateway 2000 (OLD) and has a recurring problem.

When she turns the power on the computer, it comes to life, begins the start up but then she gets a white on black message on-screen that says:

"Error: Check Computer Power & Moniter Cable"

The process stops and she has to unplug the computer to turn it off.

She has remedied it once in the past by unplugging everything from the wall and TRING again.

She brought it in to a "computer expert" who told her she had a virus ($250 to do an anti0-virus sweep). Now the same guy wants her to drop $600 on a new hard drive...the computer isn;t worth $600 TOTAL.

Please help.

This very well COULD be a virus.. Does mom have protection? Also, a hard disk is cheaper than 600 dollars...

Solve : 4 IDE connectors?

Answer»

Upon CLOSER inspection of my mainboard after installing a DVD-ROM drive I noticed that I have two additional IDE channels. IDE 3 and IDE 4.

Are these reserved for a SPECIAL purpose or can I simply use them and connect more than 4 IDE devices?

Will Windows XP SUPPORT more than 4 IDE devices?

It concerns a Gigabyte 7N400Pro mainboard.Check your motherboard manual for layout. You should have 2 IDE, 2 SATA, and 2 IDE RAID connectors. The IDE connectors should be at the top of the board close to the ATX connector. The SATA and RAID connectors should be at the bottom of the board. Typically, you WOULD not use the RAID connectors for a standard IDE connection. But again, check the manual. They are indeed close to the SATA connectors. I will refer to my manual.

Your issue may be heat related. Install better cooling solution or increase the efficiency of the one currently installed.Reformatted the computer. Windows XP. Installed startup drivers for card. Issue still occuring. VERY ANNOYING!!! Maybe problem does not lie with the video card, but with the motherboard/processor. Temperature problems perhaps. Problem only occurs after starting a 3D accelerated game. From there, after exiting the game, the issue MIGRATES to the desktop and does not go away. Even after shutting the computer down, the computer magically a few seconds later starts up again by itself, even when I haven't pushed the power button.

If this is a temperature issue, can someone please RECOMMEND me a good cooling system. My room does get pretty hot in the summer since my room faces west and gets most of the heat from noon to 8pm. Air CONDITION is no help as it does not come out strong enough from the vents. My blinds are old and don't close right anymore. I have removed the side panel of my tower to provide better air flow out of the case. The fan that was attached to it went, so having the side on was useless. TIA.I suggest having your heat sink checked before telling you to buy new hardware... it can be checked at any computer store...

Check all the video (and sound) settings in the game, over the years I've had a couple of games that 'changed' things/settings for my video.
I'd exit a game and the screen background would be a different shade, reboot would bring it back to normal.

Yes the video card has a fan on it and yes I am sure that is the source. The card is only 3 months old. It is a PNY Geforce FX 5500. With running the dxdiag text it has found no problems and getting a hold of a person at PNY is almost impossible. Got anything else I might try?I had that card once... Hated it... After looking at your response, you never did answer Merlin's question about if the card may be loose or something...

[glb]Flame[/glb]It isn't loose. I got it pushed in all the way and screwed in. I took it out and put it back in twice to make sure. The card has nice graphics especially for World of Warcraft but the noise. Guess I got to get on the phone to PNY and deal with there CRAPPY phone help service that takes forever to talk to someone! Are these printer >>usb cable>>>remove them from the device manager and unplug printer now reboot.now uninsatll the printer software and re-boot.......now load the software for the printer......and re-boot......now attach the printer.....see how it goes...

Solve : Can't access 2nd hard drive?

Answer»

Or should I just add the HDD #0" into it?Everything between the " " is the text you see on the screen when you boot. Put anything there you like. Make timeout whatever you want.

You are adding:
multi<0>disk<0>rdisk<2>partition<1>\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP PROFESSIONAL HDD #1" /fastdetect

rdisk<2> is the 3rd IDE device
partition<1> is the 1st partition on the device

I still don't know if any of this will work. Continue booting to HDD#0 and see if Windows will automatically assign a drive letter to HDD#1. If not try to assign it manually. If that doesn't work, try booting to HDD#1 and Windows should assign a drive letter to HDD#0.If the rdisk is set to 3 wouldn't that boot from my cd drive? I have both hard drives on the 1st IDE and two cd drives on the second set of IDE's.I think I may have found the solution, http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330140 Do you think that may be the problem, considering I have used Go Back on that drive before? Any ideas as far as what to do? Thanks again for all your help. I'm curious as to know how do you know about all this, I would like to be able to figure these things out, how did you do it?It worked, I just setup the spare drive as the master, booted it up and disabled Go Back, set the drive back to slave and everything is back to normal. I would like to thank you again for all the help Computer Commando, I appreciate it as well as others do im sure.It worked! Cool!!!

Microsoft said: "...This problem may occur if you have used the Roxio GoBack program on the hard disk. The problem occurs because Roxio GoBack modifies the master boot record (MBR) and changes the partition type on the hard disk. This can cause the drive to be inaccessible in Windows XP, EVEN when the hard disk appears in Device Manager and in Disk Management console. "

All this because of Roxio? I've never had much success with Roxio. It's never worked very well. I guess that's why Adaptec got rid of it. I use Nero.I actually didn't use that, I think that it came with Norton SystemsWorks that I use for my antivirus, one of the extra features it came with. But yes it did work and i'm in a lot better mood and more relaxed now that I know I won't have to lose the drive. I know I have said it before but I would like to thank you again for all the help you gave me, its very appreciated. One last thing, Happy 4th, and be safe everyone.

Solve : installing DVD and CD R/RW drives--wont work?

Answer»

Installing these on Gateway 2000 computer (products not bought or supported by them):

1. installed these 2 new drives (NEC DVD, different brand CD R), replacing CD Rom and an empty port

2. icon My Computer now shows D and E drives, but cannot open.....get error message...."retry", etc.

3. cannot update hardware....search for new hardware results in nothing

4. in rebooting, hit F1 to open configuration....shows both new drives as "secondary" in IDE configuration, not "primary". Cannot change to primary.

5. checked cables....in correct sequence (I am told) using Belt plugs....middle plug to MASTER DVD player....and end of cable plug to Slave CD R/WR drive. Power is correct. Slave and Master switches are correct.

??
Why wont it recognized these 2 new drives? It will read a Win 98 CD if I put it in......starts on its own. But I cannot open the drives myself....

Anyone explain this MYSTERY.....or did I miss something? Gateway will not help. NEC not open until Tues.
(
Be certain that the configuration of the drives is correct. Secondary Master and Secondary Slave.

Primary Master and Slave are most likely taken by your HDD and another device.

Are the drives detected in the BIOS?
Thanks for reply....

1. YES, configuration is detected in bios.

2. Secondary Master is the DVD Rom, and Secondary Slave is the WR drive.

still shows Primary as the original config.

Any more ideas?
P.S. This is weird......

I was able to burn a cd from Windows Media Player to the new drive.

But cannot open D or E drives directly, or on any commands. Can put a Windows 98 Install CD in D drive...and it reads and works.

Still puzzled. Please help experts.Have you tried to RESET your BIOS?

ok so i went out and bought the sims2 yesterday and installed my GF FX5500 vid card cause ive been running a 64mb for the past couple months cause i havent been gaming lately. so i install it and the BOOT.. it works fine then i install drivers for it and the restart and its all like... umm no i dont think i want to work anymore.. no video.. i stick the 64mb back in and it works fine. put the 256 back in and its receiving no power. but it works fine in other BOXES.. so why isnt it getting power. i unplugged all the other drives and tried BOOTING it and nothing.. so i dunno, help anyone? thxHas it ever worked in this machine?
Have you set your bios right agp-pci-onboard?
Did you get the latest drivers for it?
Did you remove the old 64 drivers first?yes

OS?Windows XPBootup with the 64 card.
Remove the 64 driver from the device manager.
Select standard vga as your display driver.
Click OK to close.
Shutdown the computer.
Change video cards.
Make sure card & cables are properly plugged in.
Boot & change bios if necessary to change pci>agp.
If windows detects new card, go with the flow & install new drivers, if not, go to add new hardware & do it.
Any HICCUPS along the way try starting in safe mode.it doesnt bootup.. i cant get to bios with the 256mb vid card.. And you need to get to bios to change 64>256 / pci>agp? Yes?its agp and how do i get the bios to change 64>256there is no power to the vid card.. the computer has power.. all the drives have power just not the vid card.. no fan.. and the light is orange on the monitor.. ive checked all the connections and stuff.64>256 is my way of saying to change the 64 card to the 256 card you need to change from pci to agp?
Sorry to confuse you.
Anyway, it shouldn't really matter, the bios should read whatever card is plugged in, but you never know.
I'm thinking as a test you should get into bios with the 64 card, change the bios to agp, save then turn off the computer, then put in the 256 card & boot to see what happens.
Only that you say it works in a different computer I'd be thinking the card is zapped.
Have you tried it in the other computer again to be sure? The 256MB card might need additional power directly from the PSU.

Does your mainboard support the 256MB videocard?yes.. i tried it in another computer again and it works.. it doesnt need additional power from the psu. yes it supports the 256.What is the speed of this card? 4x ? 8x ? 16x ?

Solve : RAM VS Video Card?

Answer»

hi,
Couple questions, I will definately posts my systems specs if you need them, but my questions are more general than my specific system based.

First off I play online games and recently I have felt the need to record this game, while I am playing it (I am using a free prog called FRAPS). HOWEVER my FPS within the game slows down emensly when I start recording, from around a playable 30 FPS to a much less playable 12FPS. I thought this might be a RAM issue so I added a 512 DDR stick to increase my RAM to 1gb. However this only increases my FPS while recording to around 15 FPS, which still ISNT that good. So I am wondering if it's b/c I need to upgrade my Video card, which is a few generations OLD NVidia Geforde 128MB card or if I didnt hook up my RAM right.
I should have 1GB but it only says .98 GB and that doesnt make sense to me. I do know the speeds are different witht he two stick of RAM, 2700 and 3500 I believe.

My second QUESTION is how do I overclock both my Video Card and my RAM? I want to do this b/c I am lazy and cheap atm and I dont know if I am going to have the money to buy a better Video Card (if that is the issue) and I really want to be able to run FRAPS, but with the FPS hit I take while running that prog it isnt freesable to to use it under my current computer situation.

Thanks for any and all answers/help.

1. Recording takes quite a lot of system resources. Your Hard Disk Drive must play quite a factor as well. The slower the Hard Disk Drive, the lower your FPS will be.

2. If you were to buy the latest PCI-E videocard from ATI/Radeon (Not Nvidia, ofcourse) you'd most likely notice a considerable boost. if your system can utulize all of its power.

3. That may be due to you installing two non-equal memory modules. Which really is not a good idea since the fastest memory module will only go as fast as the slowest will allow it to.

4. If you overclock now, you may be forced to go out to buy new hardware whilst you now still have a choice.

For all those who have no idea what overclocking actually does, ask yourself the following question:

If overclocking were a good thing, do you not think that all hardware would be overclocked to the maximum when you buy it?

hey thanks for your input.

I am trying to learn about the innerworkings of the computer as well, and I was reading about the CPU socket clock, FSB, RAM DDR, and the Vid card core clock, and how they all work together, and or limit each other.
If my FSB is 400MHZ then my RAM can onlly run at 400mhz, as well as my Vcard, even is they potentially could run faster, right?
Also you said my mem runs as slow as the slowest one, i.e.- my 2700 333DDR can only run at 333MHZ, but does this limit my vcard to process at only 333MHZ or can it still run at 400? Also seeing as I increaded the amount 512-1gig of Mem but apparently didnt increase the transfer rate what is my overall gain in inreasing my total mem?
Am I understanding how this stuff works kinda of?

You mentioned hard disk speed, is this the RPMS you speak of, and if so how does this relate to all the other transfer rates with the rest of the system?

Also how can I increase my FPS with my current setup, if there is a way?

You mentioned PCI-E, I have read up alot on this, and it sounds REALLY fast and better than AGP. However my overall system is over 2yrs old, with some new frankenstein parts installed. How would I know if my sys is even compatible with PCI-E?

I do know that overclocking reducees the life span of the systems equipment, but I also know ALOT of PEOPLE do it, and I was just wondering how to do it. I will not and do not want to do it until I know more and understand more about the innerworkins of everything in these things.

Thanks again.

Nate

PS- You seem to dislike Gforce and favor Radeon (quickly) why? Quote
PS- You seem to dislike Gforce and favor Radeon (quickly) why?

I'm affraid that answer has been lost to the mists of time.

As for increasing your FPS on your current system;

that is quite difficult, creating a stable operating environment is very important. Understanding Internet security so that no malware is installed is imperative to system performance.

Having the latest drivers installed for all hardware is also very important.

Create different videocard profiles (ATI/Radeon drivers are capable of doing so, I do not know if Nvidia can) for games and other environments so that you can enable them when you have to and disable them to lessen the strain on your videocard.

There is not much else you can that does not involve buying new equipment. Even overclocking comes at a price. And a risk.

A faster Hard Disk Drive may be useful when you plan on using your computer for video editing. If you are using an older HDD, it may be 5400RPM as opposed to today's 7200RPM HDD's with 2-16MB caches which should increase performance.

The best would be to install hardware that will push your mainboard to the limit. That way, you are certain that you are utilizing all the power that your computer can bring you.

Installing better cooling solutions may also give you an extra edge if you plan on overclocking. Actually, cooling can not be neglected when overclocking. That is why you should never overclock, system parts become much hotter and decrease life time expectancy.

You may wish to test different configuration settings and test them with a program such as 3D mark to see what configuration is most effective.

Solve : DVD-RW Drive behaving strangly...?

Answer»

Okay, today I came home and wanted to play some KOTOR, but my drive was malfunctioning and wouldn't open...well it would but at random times and only about halfway. I just decided to close it so I pressed the BUTTON to do so. I thought it would open again when I pressed the button, but INSTEAD I just got this quiet hum like noise that sounded like it was trying to open or do SOMETHING. I was just wondering if ANYONE knows a way to fix this, or should I just take it in to a technician?

Thanks a lot.The drive may require some time to open, if you keep pressing it, it will not open at all. Do not be impatient.

Solve : firewire connection won't work....?

Answer»

Okay, I'm a developing filmaker and have purchased and used a Panasonic MiniDV camera for quite some time. We've used it on other computers, and have uploaded video for editing multiple times. However, my computer doesn't have a firewire CARD built in. I went to Circuit CITY and purchased a ADS Dual Link hub (http://www.adstech.com/products/DLX-182/intro/DLX-182_intro.asp?pid=DLX-182) and have also bought a Belkin Firewire cable to connect the camcorder to the hub. However, the system will not recognize anything I put in the firewire slots at all. I've put in USB stuff in the back no sweat, and it works perfectly. I have put in my ipod with it's firewire cable up front, and it recognizes the power to recharge, but does not connect with the computer. I have a 2004 WinXP eMachines AMD Athlon 3000+, with SP2. Any help would be tremendously appreciated, thanks for reading!I have never used Firewire, but I have two suggestions:

1. Enable Firewire in BIOS.
2. Install Firewire drivers.they say it's "plug N play" and no drivers required. it's okay though, because they lied to me at circuit city, this "hub" is not what i need at all. thank you anyways though!Plug and Play means that the Operating System you are using will detect it, not always configure it. It MAY lack the drivers to do so.

Firewire may also be disabled by default or by user configuration in the BIOS. Be certain that is not the case first.

Solve : Wake up call?

Answer»

Is there a WAY for a computer to turn on at a given time supplied by the user?

If this is possible, would the computer need to have any fans ACTIVE or can it do so from stand-by power?

Well if it's an older system with a hard switch to the PSU you could get one of those power socket timers. I have some i use to turn on lights for my PLANTS in the basement for parts of the day .I had that in mind as well, unfortunately, this is ATX and not AT.

However, ATX does possess options such as LAN Wakeup call.

Would I be able to have my Router send a datagram to my Network card and use LAN Wakeup call to turn on my computer?I would assume a computer that is off will not accept incoming packets because well... it is off.

I turned off one of my systems who's LED's on the NIC card stay lit once it is off. I tried pinging it (well it humored me anyway..). The ping timed out.

Also my router did not recognize that the system was on the network once the system was turned off.http://www.madge.com/_assets/downloads/lsshelp8.0/LSSHelp/AdvFeat/WonLAN/WonLAN1.htmI have read through the information provided by you, Merlin.

However, it is not QUITE what I am searching. Is there no other way to have the computer power on at a certain time? After having to reset the CMOS I discovered an option called Resume by Wake Up.

Has anyone ever used this before and can they tell me if it works when the computer is turned off before I test it myself? It operates just like an alarm clock.......most electronic gear has this.......tv....videos......etc..on wake on lan ....a program called magic packet ........kept the lan connection ALIVE by sending packets to it.....So it's basically an alarm clock built into the BIOS?Yes......... ;)or if you have one of this>http://secure.idg.com.au/images/pcw/nvidia.jpgTo my eternal shame I do have Nvidia equipment.

I set the Wake up option in the BIOS to 0800 and it woke up at that time. Works perfect.

Thanks for the information, Merlin.

Solve : Server looking for keyboard?

Answer»

Hello,

First time poster.

I have a server running XPP on a simple motherboard that doesn't support startup without a keyboard plugged in. There are times when a soft or hard reset is needed. If someone is in the server ROOM, all is well. If not, then we need to send someone down there to re-boot with a keyboard plugged in. I might add that even with a KVM switch, the bios wiggs out and still forces a keyboard for startup.

My options are this:

  • Replace the mobo with an updated bios and with luck and lots of time it should work fine (time and money)
  • Buy a cheap keyboard and keep it plugged in. (looks like c**p)
  • Fine a keyboard simulator that will fool the PC into thinking that a keyboard is plugged in.

My question is this:

Items 1 & 2 are easy enough, but item 3 has me WONDERING if there is such a thing.

Anyone?

Thanks,

RSRDid you try using the onscreen keyboard.......ACCESSORIES*/accessibilty...>>>on screen k/bdI believe the on screen keyboard is only available after windows starts. The bios is looking for a keyboard on post-up. Without one, it errors out and will not start the OS.

Solve : HDD loud click?

Answer»

I recently purchased a 120gb Western Digital IDE hard drive from a commercial vendor at a local computer show. I set it as my master in my system and the old drive and slave and installed XP Pro on it. It seems to work fine except that when i am using it it sometimes will make a loud click noise and start to spin up again. My system hangs when it does this.

I understand it is normal opperation for a hard drive that has turned off and spun down to turn BACK on and spin back up. My problem is that the drive was CURRENTLY being accessed befor and during the time when it clicked and spun up. All connections are snug and correct.

I have looked on the WD website and found no specific information for my problem. I also found that my drive is still under warranty and they may replace it. I have POSTED this because i would like to get an opinion from someone who might have any knowledge i do not.

Another note. The HDD is currently running as a slave and when i go to access it it does not make the loud click noise when it starts up.Nothing NEW....bearings....on wd always did this! if unsure go to wd website and download diagnostic software for the hard drive....I ran the quick test with their diagnostics software and is said "Pass" with a pretty green checkmark next to it... See if BIOS has setting for Power MANAGEMENT, set "Hard Drive to Standby" to "Never".Well what im saying is the HDD was not on standby when it made the loud click and spun back up. When the drive was on standby and spun back up it did not make the loud click. When it makes the loud click it was already spinning and has to spin back up again. My system halts for a momment while it does this.I have many brands of drives, both old and new, and WD are much quieter than Seagate, Quantum or Maxtor. Loud clicking noises are generally not a good sign. If WD is willing to replace it, then do so.

Solve : Help Needed - CD-DVD Drive won't copy?

Answer»

My CD/DVD drive USED to copy ANYTHING & everything, now it won't copy anything at all.

All I am doing is clicking, dragging & dropping into the CD, and then click on file & WRITE to cd, now I have done this a thousand times, but just recently it wont copy anything.

error messages saying no disc, yet there is one there, CANT copy to a CD-RW???

HELPPPPPPPPPPPP please Are you trying to copy DVD or CD?No I'm trying to write data to a cd, i.e word doc's etc.

But I cant copy/write anythingYou may need a drive lens cleaner........cdrom drive cleaner disk....from most pc shops....Got one & done that twice, still cant write to a cd

CD-R
Error message is
Cannot complete the CD writing wizard.

There was an error in the writing process. The disc you habe attempted to write may no longer be usable

This was a brand new disc

CD-RW

Error message is
Windows does not SUPPORT this CD-RWformat. To use this disc, choose the task erase this CD-RW, which will format the disc so that windows can use it

Cannot complete the CD writing.

This was a brand new disc also, so I then formatted it and still get this message.

PLEASE someone help me as I am pulling my hair out.

I have even tried using the regedit, into CD burning, drives, volume, drive type and changed it, but changed it back and took an original copy also.

But nothing seems to work.

It is weired as I used to be able to copy/write to any cd-r & cd-rw.

Is it possible something to do with an update from XP??What software are you using?to copy nothing, I am just using xp's drag & drop etc

You need a burning software babe....like the one in windows media player.....is that the one?? download nero6......from majorgeeks .com.....forget wmp.....Windows XP Roxio should work, but you should try a program such as Nero to see it that works.

However, I tried all that you suggested and it just won't come to the AID of the party, so have invested in a u-beaut all-in-one HP 2355 scanner.
I've had no problems installing it and it's working like a dream, so I do think my older scanner had had its day.

Solve : can't turn pc on?

Answer»

when i power up, FANS turn and LEDs blink for a few seconds, then computer turns off - HELP!More information required.what more can i add? power supply is OK, reset and on/off switches ok - machine just won't boot up and runHow how has the probleem been caused? Have you tested all the hardware on different machines? Is the machine newly built?I have had the same problem with a few of my older machines. I have determined the problem to be the power supply. Basically it turns on and then turns off, similar to it being shorted out.

My reasons for assuming it is the PSU is because when i disconnect it from the system and attempt to turn it on the fan in the powersupply "TWITCHES". The power supply is only active for a few miliseconds and starts to run the fan.

I would like to know if there is a specific cause for a powersupply to act like this. You have used the same PSU in all the older machines?
No. All the systems i have recieved with the problem were given to me by friends and family who couldn't fix the problem (their computer wouldn't turn on). To my knowledge the powersupplys were never used in any system other than the one they were originally distributed in.What brand of PSU are you using? Are the PSU able to provide the systems with enough Wattages?Does the mobo show any sign of .....capasitors leaning over.....any smell of burning.??i would take out the cpu .....scrape the bottom of it.....and apply artic silver paste...and replace the heatsink....and check you have not damage the cpu pins......and use gloves grease kills CPUS.. AND rember esd**** be careful.........unplug it ....and earth your self

you already no this

i did check the insides of the PSU. Nothing seems damaged. I originally looked to see if any caps exploded but saw no such thing =D. Also i looked for any signs of burning and smoke.... even smelled it.... smelled like fish btw until i VACUUMED out the dust.

Anyway FRANK... try a different PSU in your system. in one of my afflicted systems this didn't help but another wone worked fine after i replaces the PSU.

Solve : New PC starts, then shuts off after a few seconds?

Answer»

Hello. I'm having a serious problem with my computer. I just built it yesterday. Specs are here. Anyway, I start it up, and it runs fine for a few seconds, even enough to where it gets all the way to the BIOS main screen, and then just shuts off. I was told it might bee an underpowered power supply (it's the stock from the case, and is 500W). If you guys have any ideas, I'd greatly appreciate them.Same thing happens for my home built computer. Except mine will turn on then isntantly back off, so i dont know what is wrong. Not sure about the first query, but I had the same experiences with my new build and you need to be careful that your motherboards power connections are correct, the 4point SPECIFICALLY with mine, I had used the breakaway part of the main power lead instead of a completely seperate 4 pin lead...Recheck bios setting......to defaults.....check that there is notting lose like video card....etc.....check the ide cable on the hard drive is tight....... Is fan spinning on the cpu?All the fans run fine. I just went and we installed the cables to both the cd drive and the hd. The vid card is secure. I can't CHANGE any BIOS settings, because it won't run long enough to get to the BIOS menu.reload the msi floppy disk that came with the mobo....did you put artic silver paste under the heatsink......any beeping on boot up???Huzzah!!! I fixed the problem. What happened was I improperly installed my heatsink/fan. I didn't get the pins in all the way, so they were a little loose, thus making the cpu connection loose, and thus triggering the power down. I't running fine now, and I'm roughly half way through formatting my 160Gb HD. Thanks for the help, everyone. It always something silly now load an anti-virus program......and a firewall on it.......before connected it to the net.........dont undo the work you have DONE I did have a SIMILAR problem but it the time between shutdown was varied. I could never seem to get windows installed befor it shutoff. Turns out when my cousin mounted the mobo he didn't use risers and it shorted out through the case right under the processor socket. Rather large crater left in the metal on case . It worked after using riser but it was slow and didn't like a heavy load or it locked up . Stuck that stuff on my "tech trash" shelf .

When I try to boot from Fedora 4 cd I get a crc error, but I verified the sha1sum on my laptop and the installer loads fine on the laptop.

The system is currently running Suse Linux 9.3, but I also installed Kubuntu 5.04 and had the same results even after formating.

Solve : trouble restarting computer?

Answer»

My computer froze up and started making a constant clicking noise when I was INSTALLING a program and so I tried to RESTART it back up. When I did the clciking started up again and my computer says
           Operating system not found
So i tried to reboot my computer with my recovery discks and when I put the disk in it tries to start it up but then it pops up with the error message.
Error! Hard disk was not found. Recover was aborted.

It then goes on to say that I should try and run FDISK so I do and it says
No fixed disks present.

Does anyone know what is wrong and how to fix it.

I also just installed a wireless pci card to it but it sarted up fine after I put it in so I don't know why that would be the problem.

Does seem to POINT to the harddrive......what the make of it...when you fdisked it......did you delete a partition....? is this the master or slave drive?I dont know the make of the drive or if it is the master or slave drive. I didn't delete anythign when I used FDISK, I just put that in and hit eneter.when your comp boots up down at the left hand corner it should say hit DEL to enter setup. hit the DEL BUTTON and go into the computer setup and set the hdd detection to auto and then save and EXIT and try re booting sounds like your hard drive has crashed and you need a new one.

Solve : DVD/CD Rom problems - can't get disks to work?

Answer»

Okay - I'm going to try to PUT as much info in here as possible: On a Dell Desktop computer (Dimension 8400) there is a DVD/CD Rom drive and a DVD/CD RW drive. In the DVD/CD Rom drive certain disks won't work. DATA CDs freeze the computer. I am able to eject the disk but NEED to reboot computer in order to unfreeze. I have not been able to try data DVDs. Audio cd's work fine as do dvd MOVIES. I have tried uninstalling the drive and having windows reinstall it but the same thing still occurs. THere's no explination mark next to the drive in the device manager. Seeing as I only have one data disk I can't try others. However, I tried that disk in my laptop and it worked fine. I haven't tried any installation disks in the desktop yet but I'm currently running System File Check at the moment. Does anyone have any ideas about this?
And... if anyone has some idea about it, could you explain it as I'm interested in understanding rather than just repeating someone else.

Merlin: I'll try the drive lens cleaner. It's not a problem with the disk as I have tried it on my laptop (A different drive). The only disks that seem to load are audio cds and movie dvds and vise versa. I was kind of hinted at that the yellow book mode of the lens isn't working so might need to replace the whole drive.

Thanks a lot!Configure them to do a FULL scanner sweep of your system to make certain they miss nothing.

When has your problem first occured?I constantly run those programs to check for problems. They all claim that everything is fine. I'm not sure when the problem started. It's my dad's desktop and I never have used data disks on it. He doesn't use data/installation disks often (which I tried and it didn't work (like the Drivers disk, XP Installation, etc)). He can't tell me the last time he used them and everything worked - but it couldn't have been that long ago seeing as the computer is about 6 months old.

I was going to get one of those lens cleaners to see if that helps. However, if the computer freezes up on the other disks, how is it going to work with the lens cleaning disk (unless it reads it as a movie/audio disk).

I'm kind of clueless here and Dell hasn't been much help (surprise surprise). The cleaner disk is not a data disk, I believe..Thanks a lot

Solve : Notebook parts compatibilty?

Answer»

im shopping for a notebook and I decided on a dell inspiron 6000 since it seems like a good student laptop and im a student. I decided to go with the base components except for the processor, the graphics card, and the optical drive....all of those I would rather have dell install. Im going to buy more ram and replace the current 256 MB of 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM with 2- 1gb. chips of 200-Pin DDR2 533 SO-DIMM. I'm also upgrading the hard drive and I would like to know if a ATA/100 interface hard drive would be able to replace the standard ultra ata hard drive in the notebook

Could you tell me if these parts would be compatible with this notebook

I am a computer tech and I have more call outs for Dell desktops and notebook. I would be giving a great deal of thought before i would by a dell computer of any type.

That's because there are more Dells than any other brand. Dell is the #1 computer maker in the world. Everything is made in Asia, so there is LITTLE difference in brands anymore.

Hard drive will work, RAM, I believe will work. If I were buying a new Dell notebook, I would get all the upgrades from them (no matter the cost), then it's guaranteed to work or they replace it. Whatever you do, I recommend the extended warranty. Notebooks are not user repairable, they are disposable computers, just like cell phones. I know it's a lot of money, but if you MUST have a notebook, then you just have to pay.

Solve : Trinitron Fuzzy Display?

Answer» HELLO, I have a D1025TM Trinitron monitor that is not functioning properly. While installing WinXP Home, the screen went a lot darker and the display is fuzzy and out of focus. I also can't change any of the monitor's setting as they seem to be locked.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
KevinYou may need to install videocard drivers.Update video card. drivers.....or has the sony trintron....a drivers disk......load it......

    * Snap* All the video card drivers are installed, and the problem still occurs when attaching the screen to ANOTHER PC with a different setup.

Since the monitor software menus are SCRAMBLED, it appears that the screen software was affected by the operating system (WinXP home), or by another program.

Thanks for the help so far,

KevinThe on screen display is scrambled? Lower resolution. You mean in WINDOWS?

It's at the lowest I can get it... (640x480)

I don't think the OSD is affected by the screen resolution.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/multimonitor.mspxThen what do you mean by monitor software menu?

Solve : Finding out if I have AGP 2.0?

Answer»

Hi,

I did a search for this on here but I kept getting a “web site not responding” message so I guess I’ll just post my question...

I am planning on buying a new graphic card for my computer and the one that I am thinking about buying says it requires an AGP 2.0 slot, but I don’t know if my computer has that or not. Is there anyway of finding out if I do?

Thank you.You will NEED to find out your motherboard details, make, model etc. Then search the net to get the motherboard specifications to see if it has agp2 support.
Download & run 'Belarc Advisor', it should give you a good start. What is the name of your mainboard?

If you're lucky, and you have a modern mainboard, the AGP number may be displayed on the Northbridge fan. Which is LOCATED above the videocard. This may apply only to GIGABYTE mainboards.

There are THREE variants of AGP.

2X, 4X and 8X.

You will most likely only find 8X in stores. 2X is terribly outdated, 4X is reasonable and often backwards compatible with 8X.

Here is more information regarding AGP.Hi,

I know that my motherboards model number is AM37L and manufactured by FIC, I did a few searches and unfortunately wasn’t able to find out anything. I know that my computer has AGP 4x. I did read something that said that if I had an AGP 4x slot then it is AGP 2.0, I am not sure if that is correct, does anybody here know if it is true or not?

Thanks.AGP 2.0 is capable of the following speeds:

  • 1x

  • 2x

  • 4x

I appreciate the help guys, thanks.

Solve : No sound..?

Answer»

My computer lost sound couple of weeks ago.

I did some research on my own, but none COULD solve my problem.

1) Speakers work on my other computer.
2) They're properly connected to my computer.
3) When I go to 'Audio devices' in control panel, it says I don't have any audio device, (the whole thing is 'gray', inactive, unclickable..etc..)
4) I can't even ACCESS volume control, since when I try to open it, it says that I need to GET a sound device first.
5) I FOLLOWED the stickied post and tried UPDATING my sound device, but found out that I had no sound card.

But if I have no sound card, how come I heard sound perfectly before? You dont need a sound card to listen to sound. You most likely have onboard/integrated sound. You'll need to install/re-install the drivers for your computer.Make certain the soundcard is not disabled in the BIOS.

Solve : cd drive not reading??

Answer»

I've been having problems with my cd drive not reading any CDs. When I put one in, the drive light blinks GREEN, then changes to orange and blinks faster. Then, when I go to "my computer," it seems to think that there's nothing in the drive.

I've got an HP Pavilion 6835 (with Windows ME) and the drive is the original one that came with the computer (it has a CD burner). I've tried the email help route with HP, but got nowhere. They suggested resetting the BIOS (?), reinstalling the driver, and opening up the tower to make sure everything's still connected. None of those things seemed to solve the problem.

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions!! When has the problem first occurred?Well, things were kind of hectic b/c I had finals at SCHOOL and then moved back home for the summer. I don't think it happened until I was back at home, which would make me think that maybe something did get disconnected along the way. But like I said, it was a hectic time for me, so I wish I could remember better exactly when I first noticed it...

This afternoon I opened up the tower, and it looked like everything was still connected, from what I could tell, anyway. I'm no computer expert, by any means, but I'm pretty sure that I was looking at the right connections.you need a drive cleaner from your cdrom drive.....also it may help if you cleaned the cdisks....My dad had a CD lens cleaner cd that I tried, but it did no good. If the drive won't recognize CDs, putting in a cleaner CD does nothing. :-/

I THOUGHT that the behavior of the drive lights would tip someone off to what was wrong, but I guess not...it seems to me that it's doing something since the light changes, but during the process of trying to read the CD, something goes wrong. And you have reset the BIOS?Yes, I did reset the BIOS. That was one suggestion from the email help at HP.I was not certain because it had a question mark behind it.

If you are able to, test the CD-ROM drive on another computer.I'm not really comfortable taking the drive out and messing with it. Maybe I'll have to find some place to get it looked at...does this happen with all cd disks..... type msinfo32 in the run box.......now click on the + components next you see......error devices+ click that........is should display an error code.......like code20 or whatever..... Quote

Yes, I'm having problems with any CDs I've tried. I've tried blank CD-R's, STORE bought music CDs, and a CD with a photo editor-type program on it.

Under components, there was something called problem devices. When I clicked that, I saw something like this:

Device
ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
Error Code
22
That code is ok the windows may have disabled it?/ i have have that code my pc>>> dont WORRY about it>... can you load the cdisk......and go to my computer window.....and right click on the drive the cdisk was put in....and click explore......does it work.....When I click "explore", the window pops up that says "please insert a disk into drive D:"that would indicate to me a dirty cdrive........try lens cleaner again.........if not try this>Fresh Diagnose

http://www.freshdevices.com/drive.html it will test your cdrom drives etc.... aslo you could check the cdrive settings....>.control panel.....click the systen icon....device manager.....scroll down the list to you see you cdrom drive....click the + then click properties and then click settings......it should read.....disconnect box ticked......auto notificaton box ticked dma box ticked

Solve : D: gone?

Answer»

k well my hp pavilion recently died (the motherboard at least), so took the hard drive and attached it to ANOTHER computer, a tower computer i got from a friend. Anyways I'd just bought a new samsung cdrw/dvd player, which I had attached to my pavilion. I also transferred this over. I also made the hp hard drive primary master. When I boot up the computer, it detects the cdrw/dvd player as my primary slave as it should, but when windows is loaded, I can't access it nor does it SHOW up as a drive on my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. boygenius145........Can you go into the bios and see if it sees the cdrw/dvd drive ?

When you istalled the cdrw/dvd drive did you see the message new hardware detected ?

Can you change the cd drive to the Secondary master and see if it shows up that way ?

dl65 Is the CD-RW/DVD player connected as a slave on the same IDE cable as the HDD is or did you connect it as a Slave to the second IDE channel without a master? You may want to consider this reg patch
Read more beforehand>http://aumha.org/regfiles.htm Quote

I HOOKED the CD-RW/DVD player to the slave on the same IDE cable as well. I set the bios to autodetect them, and it detects the cdrw/dvd player at the boot screen, but once windows loads, its not there. I'll check out that patch and see if it works, ty. Quote

I've tried setting it as the secondary master and slave as well, with the same RESULTS. Also it showed new hardware detected when i installed it ONTO the HDD before I switched motherboards. Also it is detected from the bios.
