Solve : missing RAM??

Answer»

hey,
i don't know much about computers, but i know when there's something strange going on. and just a couple of days ago i bought a new game and looking at the back it said i need 256MB of RAM for it, and that was cool cos i knew that that is what my puter had...but i started PLAYING and it was really slow and so i had a look at the general information and it says i only have 240MB of RAM...so i don't know if that's a normal THING to happen or how to fix it, or if i just have to buy more or what...
any info or ideas would be very appreciated

ThanksThe minimal requirements for the game are 256MB RAM. However, not only the RAM counts when it comes to performance.

Why Windows only shows 240MB INSTEAD of 256MB RAM, I do not know. It is common behaviour, though.

I think it is related to either incompatible or damaged/corrupt RAM.

However, even if Windows only detects 240MB RAM, the MISSING 16MB RAM would MAKE very little difference.

16MB "missing RAM" is mostly likely being used as video memory.

Solve : Laptop screen turns white?

Answer»

Hi all,

Compaq Presario 1700 laptop, pIII-850mhz, 256mbram, 40gb harddrive, xp professional.

After about an hour of using laptop the screen goes all white from the middle and extending out to the edges. Is it a bad lcd screen? Scan for virus and spyware found nothing. If it is a screen, is it replacable?

THANKS for any help!Type dxdiag in the run box and test for graphics......update the video driver......or roll it back.....download diagnostic program like sisoft sandra/aida32/belearic advisor. Is the laptop still under warranty? No. It is far out of warranty. I will run the dxdiag when I get home tonight. If you wish to eliminate the chance that this is caused by software, load the BIOS and have it run for an hour or more to see if it still happens. Will work with external monitor and now the laptop screen is white from the MOMENT it is turned on. Now also wont boot to windows, system 32 missing or corrupted. So now it is a screen and a harddrive I presume. Anybody want to buy this old laptop???NO......but what is the screen mode set at....1024.....800....at the refresh rate *or what was it set at?....it maybe that the settings *you have are out of range with the graphics/video CARD......i would not dump it yet...........see if this can fixit....GO into the bios setup....maybe f1/2 on boot.....and select.....the defaults opttion...and re-boot. and ^*check the above^*
did you run the the program dixdiag.......?

Solve : Hibernation is an emergency feature??

Answer»

According to this article;

Quote

Also known as "SMART battery", hibernate is a utility designed to keep the desktop settings and program settings currently being used or worked on when laptop computer looses its power. When the computer is turned back on the hibernate feature restores your programs and settings exactly as you left them when the computer was turned off.

NOTE the text converted to Italic.

If this is true, then why do people make use of it? No wonder there are so many Hibernation issues as of LATE when it is only MEANT as an emergency feature!
Hibernation is power saving. .....saves wear on the hard disk > no problems encounted on my all my SIX desktops....and the laptop............So it is no emergency feature?

1. USB2.0 will function on USB1.1 (at slower speed of USB1.1).
2. You mean Firewire to USB? Will it work?...maybe. What speed?...depends on the "cable".

Solve : HP printer usb lead...ARRG!?

Answer»

hi there,
Today, I have BOUGHT a HP PSC 1215 all in one printer/scanner/copier.
I had installed the drivers and software only to find that I couldn't find the USB lead to connect it to the computer...Looking on the side of the box, in teeny-tiny writing, I spotted:

Optional Accesory (please purchase seperately)
HP USB cable (HP part no. C6518A)

OPTIONAL!?!?!? well, i may just as well use telepathy and save money, *censored*!
anyway, I found a spare broadband-modem-to-computer USB cable and it fit perfectly, was the right shape and everything. But it didn't work.
My question is:
Is the printer broken, or should I fork out £4.64 excluding p&p and vat for the real Mcoy HP brand recommended usb lead because the other one didn't work?
thanks1. Does the printer power on?
2. Where does it refuse to work?
3. Is it detected by Windows? It works fine, but it is not detected by windows and its like its not even connected. It probably isn'tTry the following:

1. Fully REMOVE drivers
2. Unplug HP Printer
3. Reset computer
4. Plug in HP Printer

See if Windows detects it.

Are you using Windows XP?http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Products.asp?CatID=5&Category=Cables&ThumbNails=Yes&FilterCategories=227&FilterManufacturers=&FilterMinPrice=&FilterMaxPrice=&FilterKeywords=
decided to order part...after vat and p&p, came to £16.95 (?!?) so went to maplin instead...came back with brand new A to B male & male USB lead...works fine (all for only £2.50!)
just goes to SHOW to shop around!

Solve : Need Help Configuring New Video?

Answer»

I'm building my computer and I just realized I MAY have a problem. The motherboard I bought doesn't have onboard video. I have an AGP video card but if the computer isn't even setup and stuff yet, how am I going to get the monitor to work when I can't load the drivers. I won't be able to configure anything because I can't even get the screen working. How can I fix this?So i take it you have FORMATED the hardrive??......its best to take it easy........step by step and reap the benefits of your LABOURS...and learn as well....... Quote

I won't be able to configure anything

You SUSPECT it won't work?
Quote
I can't even get the screen working.

You know it doesn't work?
No, what I'm saying is...how am I going to be able to hook up a monitor when there are no drivers for it. There is nothing at all on the hard drive. I want to set up the BIOS and hard drive and stuff but I can't because I can't see how to without the monitor.Your bios will drive the video with VGA and windows will give you at least a screen to work with so you can then install your video drivers. But Windows isn't even installed yet. Nothing is on the hard drive. There shouldn't be any problem anyway. Without drivers, it won't be able to USE the card or its resources, but it'll use the computer's resources until the time when the drivers are installed. Just plug the monitor into the VGA/DVI connector and go, it should load.

I even fried my video card's GPU before, and I was still able to run my computer at 600 x 400 through the VGA on the video card.

Solve : Network cards now and 1996?

Answer»

What would the differences be between a network interfacee CARD such as Compaq/Intel NC3121 from 1996 and any random network interface card from 2005?

What technologies have been added?

I have a NC3121 which is not in use, and I am thinking of using it in my game system. However, I am worried that I will be using a far too OUTDATED card compared to the Network card onboard. Which is most likely post-2001.

Why......whats is your point.....No new technologies really. Your older one is probably a 10/100, and the newer one might be a 10/100/1000, but when are you ever going to get internet that fast? Quote

A man can dream.

So, there absolutely no new technologies introduced since 1996 that are important to gamers or high speed Internet?I'm sure there's new acronyms and whatnot and new whatevers, but they don't really matter. I haven't noticed any difference between 10/100 and 10/100/1000 while playing games (I have 6mbps cable). Quote

Makes sense to me. The 10 in 10/100 is 10mbps well above the 6mbps cable.

The History of Ethernet

IEEE 802.3 CSMA/CD (ETHERNET)The conclusion would be that a network from 1996 is as effective as a network card from 2005?

Have absolutely no new technologies been added? You would think that with the massive amount of cable users, there would be certain improvements made?If you're on ethernet, a 10/100/1000 is better. You have to have a cable to SUPPORT it as well, a standard CAT5 PATCH isn't capable of supporting up to 1000, you need a CAT5e or a CAT6.

10/100/1000 is mostly important for data intensive LAN - i.e. gaming (LAN parties) and business networking. That is not quite what I use the computer for. I use it to play games via the Internet. I guess I could even do with an old 10Mbps card if I had to.

So, is it adviceable to switch from Onboard network card to Compaq NC3121 from 1996? I read that onboard cards take up more system resources than expansion cardsI don't know whether they do or not. I'd just as soon use an onboard card than deal with an extra decvice.I think I have to find a reasonable compensation. If an onboard card requires more resources to be ran than an expansion card, I would definitely switch. But if the network card from 1996 is severly outdated and will not deliver as good a performance as the onboard, I wouldn't switch for anything in the world...

Solve : Last Ditch Effort?

Answer»

Try another monitor.? check the serial cable pins are not bent/broken? chose setup defaults in the bios options...Try connecting just 1 of the monitor inputs to the card, either digital or analog. If the monitor works fine on another computer then the only basis for your PROBLEM will most LIKELY be a bad videocard slot, the actual slots themselves have been known to be faulty and not supplying the required voltage. I do BELIEVE the reason nothing ELSE is powering on your system is by default Windows has a "Stop" on boot errors preventing anything from powering up during the POST once it encounters a problem. If you have a Multi-Meter handy, check the videocard slot for voltage, should be about 3.3 volts for 8x-16x AGP slots, though it steps down if you stick an older 4x card in there as well. Hope you work it out. Cheers! If I were to replace the motherboard, I need an AMD Socket 754 DDR333(PC2700). Evidentally, the motherboard I have is the only one of its kind, according to my search on www.newegg.com. Can ANYONE else confirm this for me. Or I guess I will have to hunt down some RAM too. You could do with a motherboard Socket 754 that supports PC3200 as well. You will just not utilize its full potentional.I would rebuild the system.<.http://www.buildyourowncomputer.net/learntobuild.html >>...otherwise you are going around in circles........imhao....and i would check that the case pins |> are not shorting on the motherboard....Everything is connected correctly. Where can I get a multimeter to test the voltage of the video card slot and how do i go about doing it. Quote

Everything is connected correctly. Where can I get a multimeter to test the voltage of the video card slot and how do i go about doing it.

There is no such thing as a video card slot. It can be an ISA (Outdated) PCI (Near-outdated) AGP or PCI-E slot.

The voltage can often be adjusted (for AGP) in the BIOS. However, this is only meant for overclocking and I doubt it is meant for trouble shooting. It's the AGP slot. If I know that it is bad, then I know I have to get a new motherboard. Please don't forget that the computer isn't booting up at all. It turns on and everthing, but the hard drive doesn't make any noise like it's booting up so it obviously isn't booting Windows. If that's the problem, how can I fix it.I would invest in a new motherboard.....Can a bent pin in the monitor plug cause the hard drive not to start? Does the whole system halt because of it if it's the problem?I have several older monitors with bent and missing pins, and none of them have ever caused a system to fail when booting.None of the pins are bent. The only thing I can think of is the motherboard slot for the video card. The video card works fine in another system. The RAM has never been changed and is the correct compatibility. Now if I want to test the motherboard slot again I would need a motherboard with Socket 754 and PC2700(DDR333). Now if I get a motherboard that supports DDR400/333/200(?), then my RAM should work in it right? TIA. Quote

Solve : MSGSRV32 problems with USB devices, USB 2.0 card?

Answer»

Hi,

I've been having troubles with USB. I have a Gateway computer, 500 mhz, 128 MB RAM, running Win98 SE. I have two built-in USB ports on the back of the tower. I bought the SYSTEM for $100 at a garage sale a few months ago from owners who appeared to have kept it up meticulously, and it's worked beautifully other than the USB problem.

I used one USB device (a cable modem) without problem (I've since hooked the modem up to the eternet port), but haven't been able to use anything else. I tried to install my printer, and a compact flash reader, and finally tried a new USB card, since I'd RATHER RUN 2.0 anyway.

I get a message that Windows Message Server (MSGSRV32.exe) has performed an illegal action and will shut down. When I click on Details, it says msgsrv has caused a general protection fault in Kernel 386.exe.

During the USB card installation, the error message comes right after the computer says that Windows has found new hardware and will install the drivers for it. It lists the device it's supposed to list, according to the installation manual. The device is a Stratite USB 2.0 Upgrade Card, 5 port, 480 Mbps.

I've been trying to look up information on this problem but I haven't found anything specific. I checked in the BIOS but the only mention of USB was Legacy USB support for keyboards, which was enabled. In the Control Panel > System > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers, the items listed are Intel 82371/AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller, and USB Root Hub.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Laurie1. Remove all entries related to the expansion USB card from the device manager
2. Shut down your system
3. Remove the card
4. Boot system
5. Allow Windows to load.
6. Shut down your system
7. Reinsert the card
8. Allow for redetectionHow many usb devices have you got.?...you may have exceeded the bandwith?........load the drivers for the card??if this fails....go to the device manager........scroll down the list and click usb host controllers+click advanced tab and untick the disable usb error dectection.......if you have a via mobo go to there website and download the 4 in 1 drivers.......Hi Raptor,

There are no entries in Device Manager relating to the expansion card, because the installation never gets far enough to add any entries. As soon as Windows detects the card, MSGRV32.exe reports the error message.

LaurieUpdate the bios......See this article first.Hi again. Thanks for the replies. At the moment, I'm not using anything USB. The only thing I used at all on this computer was the cable modem, which I've since switched to the Ethernet port. I downloaded a BIOS update from Gateway's support page, but according to the readme file, I don't need to update. I've never looked into BIOS updates, so I don't really know what I'm doing there.

I have continued to read what I can find, and one thing I found was that the Intel 82371/AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller I mentioned in my first post was prone to problems. But it seems to me that should only affect something I plug into the original USB ports, not plugging a new USB card into a PCI slot, which gives the same error message.

When I plug my new USB card in, I'm supposed to get a message that Windows has detected an NEC Open Host Controller. I don't remember if that's the message I got the first time I plugged it in, but now when I plug it in, I get what I'm supposed to get later in the process, a message that Windows has detected a PCI Universal Serial Bus. I don't know if that means anything. There is no NEC Open Host Controller in Control Panels > System > Device Manager.

I do have a computer guru friend coming to visit in a month, so this may end up going to him.

Thanks again,

LauriePerhaps you need to install drivers for the PCI expansion card.http://www.necel.com/usb/en/index.html

Solve : Hard Drive Installation Help?

Answer»

My hard drive went out and so I purchased a new one. I've never set up a hard drive before so I was needed some help. I was going to take it SOMEWHERE, but I figured if I can figure it out, then I can save quite a bit of money. Anyway, I was going to have the place partition the hard drive into a C:/ & E:/ drive (for recovery), but on my manufacturer website, I found this:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW TO: RESTORING the MD5275 without the E partition

Tasks
The MD5275 laptop can be restored if the E partition has been deleted or if the C partition SIZE has been modified.

The laptop can be restored using the Application and Support DVD as long as the C partition is still formatted with NTFS file system. If an operating system such as Windows 98, Windows ME, or Linux has been installed this procedure will not work.

To restore:

Put the Application and Support disc into the CD/DVD combo drive and restart the laptop.
Select Boot From CD-ROM on the boot menu that comes up when the laptop restarts.
Select e on the language menu for English.
Select Setup Recovery from CD from the restore menu.
Press enter on the red warning screen.
Type the word start and then press enter on the pink warning screen.
The restore screen should appear with a yellow progress bar at the BOTTOM of the screen. Continue to the next step if you do not see a progress bar. Skip to Step 8-10 if you do see a progress bar.
Press the escape key. You should now be at an A:\> prompt.
Type in the following command: fdisk /mbr and then press enter. You should return to the prompt with no ERRORS.
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your laptop. Go back to Step 2 to restart the restore.
After the restore process has finished, the laptop will reboot and attempt to load Windows XP. However, when Windows tries to load, an NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM stop error (blue screen) will appear. To fix this, you will need to do the following:

Insert the Medion Product Recovery (Windows XP) CD into the combo drive. Turn the laptop off and then back on.
When the "Press any key to boot from CD..." prompt appears, press any key on the keyboard.
Wait for the Windows XP Setup to load. Press the R key on the keyboard to start the Recovery Console after setup has finished loading.
In 10-20 seconds the recovery console will appear with a C: prompt.
At the C: prompt, type chkdsk /p and press enter.
When chkdsk is finshed, type exit and wait for the laptop to restart.
When the laptop restarts Windows will load normally.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, it seems I may not need to waste room on a recovery drive if I can just do this process if needed. The instructions assume Windows is already loaded, I think. Well, the new hard drive hasn't been formatted. So, basically I am looking for instructions to help me get to the beginning on the instructions I just listed. I need to know how to format the hard drive. When I install it and turn on the laptop, will it load to have me format or what? I need to just format it with a C:/ drive with the NTFS file system. Any help is appreciated and if anyone can give me one set of instructions to walk me through it, I will send them $5. Thanks.Well. In order to do that you need a startup disk so you can enter in and partion the drive. As far as im concern windows 98 startup disk has the command fdisk.exe. To get a startup disk go to www.bootdisk.com and have a blank floppy ready. Once you get in with fdisk.exe just enable large disk support and partion it yourselfs. Need more instructions let me know Oh by the way if you partion the drive make sure you type the amount of space you want in each drive. If you dont it will only make one drive and then you have to erase the whole hard drive start it raw and redo it again. So make sure you have the amount of space for each drive. Do I need to make a boot disk from the computer that I am replacing the hard drive on or will any computer do. Also, if I don't partition it, do I just choose NTFS and no partitioning (not sure what options they will give me are). Thanks. I may try this after work tomorrow. Also, I have a full install CD of Windows XP Professional. Can I use this somehow instead of my manufacturers XP Home Edition? I think the first part of the instructions (the application CD) loads Windows. At least that's what Medion said when I called them. So, could I do XP Professional CD for step 1 and then follow the 2nd part for the drivers or would that overide Professional with Home Edition. Or can I somehow install XP Professional and then download the drivers from the Medion site? Thanks again.Yet another question: After viewing a site from my college (IU), it says to basically just put the XP Professional CD in and it will walk me through everything. First it will ask me to delete all partitions (which I won't have any) and then once I have "unpartitioned space" available, I select it and choose my file system. Will this method work since I don't have a partition even yet? Also, would I still need a backup disc and would I still need to download any kind of drivers from the Medion site like the BIOS drivers they have? Thanks again.About the XP Professional CD-- since the IU site recommends to reformat and then install XP, I'm assuming it is a full version that I should be able to do on a new hard drive, correct?

Also, if it is, then I definitely want to go that route. So, I need instructions on what to do after I install the hard drive using the XP Professional CD. Thanks.Anyone? I just need instructions on how to get the hard drive up and running using the XP Professional CD. Thanks. Quote

Also, if it is, then I definitely want to go that route. So, I need instructions on what to do after I install the hard drive using the XP Professional CD. Thanks.

I will assume that:

1. The Hard Disk Drive is mounted
2. The Hard Disk Drive is connected
3. The Hard Disk Drive is configured (M/S/CS)

Instructions:

1. When booting the computer, during the POST, enter BIOS
2. Set the first boot device to CD-ROM
3. Insert Windows XP CD
4. Press any key when prompted to, to boot from CD
5. Follow instructions.

Note:

If you have bought an OEM version, you will not be prompted for authentication.

If you have bought an upgrade version, you will be prompted to insert Windows 98, 98SE, ME or 2000 before being allowed to install Windows XP.What did you mean by configured (M/S/CS)? Also, so I don't need a boot disk or anything then? Thanks. How do I install Microsoft Windows XP Quote
What did you mean by configured (M/S/CS)? Also, so I don't need a boot disk or anything then? Thanks.

Master / Slave or Cable Select. The jumper settings are hardware related.

Windows XP does not require a boot diskette, the Windows XP is a bootable CD. Set the CD/DVD-ROM as the first boot device in the BIOS.

Solve : Small load to PSU harmful??

Answer»

1. Is it harmful to connect smaller loads such as fans to the Power Supply UNIT and have the connection end there?

2. Is it harmful to other devices (Performance and power wise) if I you connect smaller loads such as a fans to the power Suppyl Unit and connect another load to the fan connector? (Certain fans come with a MALE and female plug allowing you to connect another device and not have the chain of power end at the fan)1) Not at all.

2) You shouldn't go too far. For the most part, as long as you aren't asking more than your PSU can supply, its fine. I mean, you're not thinking of connecting all your devices to one connector, are you? Thank you.

You seem to know things. What brand of Power Supply unit do you advise? There's plenty of good ones - Enermax, Rosewill, Cooler Master, Thermaltake, OCZ, Antec, or Zalman (if you're a quiet computer freak who can afford it). What brand would offer me a reasonable price and reasonable performance?

I have a 300 Watt Qtec and a 400 Watt Chieftec. My computer only requires 245 WATTS. What would be the better choice? The Chieftec can make the case temperature rise with 15 to 20 Degrees celcius in a matter of two hours. I think it is malfunctioning as it is even far too warm when the computer is shutdown and on standby voltage. If you have no plans for OVERCLOCKING (thus raising wattage requiremnts), go for the 300 Watt. That gives you plenty of room to maybe add another hard drive or pci or a few extra components. No need to go for a bigger power supply if you don't need it - especially if it causes overheating problems.I was thinking the same thing. I ADDED the 400 Watt Chieftec because someone told me that my rail voltages were low. The difference isn't that great, the rail voltages on the Chieftec are a bit more stable than those on the Qtec (Measured via BIOS) but I am not too well educated on this particular subject, so I really can't tell if switching back is a good choice. I was also reaching the end of the 300 Watt PSU, so it needed to be replaced.

I need a good website where PSU brands are compared, do you happen to know of one?A great website where I buy all my parts is newegg.com. Unfortunately, they only ship to the United States, and I noticed you live overseas. But its still great to look at all the parts they have and compare different PSUs and their specs.Do they compare PSUs?

They don't have articles, but you can read everyone's reviews from people who bought them, and all the tech specs. Otherwise, just google it! I will try Newegg next time I buy a product to see what the users have got to say.

Usually you can't go wrong with the best rated components there. Most people who buy from Newegg are in the business, enthusiasts, or gamers who are all building the computers themselves, so they know a thing or two. Newegg makes a little effort to only stock quality products as well, so most of their stuff is good, but they stock some cheap stuff too for people on a budget.

Solve : DVD RAM acting like DVD ROM?

Answer»

I bought 5 DVD RAM discs quite awhile ago and saved some files. Now I want to re-use them, but

when I try to delete something from them, it says "Cannot delete *filename*: Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive."

When I try to move/copy a file onto this same DVD RAM, I get this message "Cannot create or replace *filename*: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not FULL or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."
No, the files aren't in use, but I'm not sure if there is write-protection on it.

Can anyone tell me why my DVD RAMs are acting like DVD ROMs? And if I have accidently write-protected the DVD, how can I reverse this?

I'm using a Fujitsu FMV-Biblo NX70J/T

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdWell friend ... I dont think so that you can reverse the operation of right protection in case optical disks. Secondly dics MARK with RW (ReWritable) media can be re-wrtitten. I do hope that u will get answer for your question. Do take care of you and others and be happy.

I'm aware of this site, and ALTHOUGH I'm not trying to copy DVD videos, I'm checking the forum there anyway in the meantime. All I am trying to do is to delete files from the DVD RAM, and drag and drop files onto it. Both actions are refused.

The dvd ram disk......is it a re-writeable one?The dvds are "Panasonic 120 min rewritable/video recording DVD-RAM"s.

Just as I'm typing this, I thought it might have something to do with them being for video recording, but that doesn't explain why I had already saved data files onto them before.

I thought I figured something out by rightclicking the E drive, choosing properties, then recording (windows XP). Here I found thatunder DESKTOP CD Recording, the box "Enable CD Recording" was unchecked. So I checked it, and tried to copy files. They began to copy, but only as an image, and the "CD writing wizard" which never came up before, insists "the disc in the drive is not a writable cd or it is full", etc.Are these disks meant for a panasonic dvd recorder??not for pc recording use?coded.....A DVD-RAM is not the same as a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R/W, or DVD+R/W

http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/computer/storage/dvdram/prods/faq.htm Quote
Are these disks meant for a panasonic dvd recorder??not for pc recording use?coded.....

I guess I ultimately don't know the answer to this question. I'll ask the retailer where I bought them. But regardless of the answer, it begs another question. Why was I able to record files onto these dvds before (software, music, etc) and I am still able to read the discs, use the data on the discs, and even copy the data back onto my hard drive, yet I cannot delete any of it nor can I copy (drag and drop) files onto the dvds anymore as I did in the first place many many months ago (even after reformatting).

Looking at the above poster's faq, I thought it might be my dvd drive which somehow didn't support the discs. But my computer manual states I have a "super-multidrive" which supports
CD-ROM
CD-R
CD-RW
DVD-ROM
DVD-RAM
DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD+R
DVD+RW

I can't help but think there is some kind of setting on the computer that has been inadvertently CHANGED.

Solve : Faint Line Monitor?

Answer»

I have just notice a faint line running from top to bottom of my monitor.
I have tried changing resolution but it is still there runing down the middle of my monitor.
it stands out mainly when the background is Black.
Everything else LOOKS crystal clear on the monitor.
Does this mean the monitor is on the way out, Its 6years old, Or are there some other things i can try that i dont know about to fix this problem. Seems ashame to get rid of monitor when all else seems really clear.system details are:>Aperture grill?Amd 2500, Xp Home, Geforce fx5900, DDr1024. Whats Apeture grill mean?.Aperture grill & shadow mask are the 2 different ways the manufacturers use to mask the PHOSPHOR on the front of a crt.
Google them both & you will find out all about it, too much to type here.
The bottom line is that a fine line is shown by aperture grill crts, it's the supporting wire that holds all the other wires steady.
It's usually more noticable on a plain white screen but you never know.
Can you try your monitor on a different computer and also try a different monitor on your computer?
It's an easy way to cut the problem in ½.

Solve : How do i reset??

Answer»

I want to set my computer back a fewe days. I know I have done this before but am not sure how i did it. I must of downloaded some spyware and in the process of trying to get rid of it i have 2 things that pop up when I turn my computer on. One to install increidmail and antoher saying some file is not found. I just want to set it back to before it happened. I went to system RESTORE and could only go back to a few hours ago. How do I restore it?You can restore it by resolving the problem. Masking it will not make it go away, but only post pone the inevitable.

SCAN in safe mode, disable System Restore beforehand
Virus scanners
AVG Free

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal

Firewalls
Using only one firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant HIJACKER.

Easy Cleaners

Registrar Lite
-- Excellent replacement for Windows Regedit
Crap Cleaner
-- Freeware registry scanner/history cleaner

Caution is advised when using these programs!
Create backups of all important files before proceeding.
Gwen:

You can only use System Restore points that are available. The only other way to restore your system is to restore a backup that you yourself have MADE using the operating system's backup program or a third party backup program.

A more drastic method is to do a repair installation (if you have Windows XP, for example).

I have a HP Pavilion XT983 with a AMD processor. Recently the video STOP working(black screen on monitor), I try a new monitor and it still will not work and I hooked another computer to the HP monitor and the computer work so I KNOW I narrowed it down to the video card or the motherboard. So I bought a PCI video card from Wal-Mart put it in the HP computer and hook the monitor up the PCI video card and still no video just a black screen. So next I thought it could be the motherboard so I bought a new motherboard off of ebay the buyer said it worked so I put the AMD processor out of my old computer into the motherboard I bought off of ebay and hook everything back up, still no video. The motherboard I bought off of ebay had a AGP slot so next I bought a AGP video card off ebay , put the AGP card in the motherboard I bought off of ebay and still no video. Solve : monitor shadows?

Answer»

I have a five YEAR old Gateway computer system and had been using the CRT monitor that came with that system until recently. About a year ago, the monitor started showing horizontal "shadows" or dark bands across the screen. I can still see the image on the screen, but there are darker bands throughout that seem to originate from darker objects within the images. I replaced the CRT last week with a new flat screen LCD monitor, but the shadows are still there. I also replaced the cable that connects the monitor and the cpu. Does anyone know what else could be causing the problem?
Thanks,
MikeAs soon as you started using the LCD monitor, did those bands show up RIGHT away, or did they show up after a couple of days using it?

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]The shadows showed up right away.
I remember because I was bummed the monitor was not the fix.
I have only been using this new monitor for 2 days.
TIA HOPE this helps!
I forgot to include that the tower is a gateway performance 800.
The monitor was a ev910 18" view.
New monitor is an Advantage 1901B 19-inch LCD.
Drivers did not seem to be an issue, it found the one necessary right away and it was up and running.
MikeSounds like it could be the video card, try uninserting and re-inserting the video card into its slot and see what happens. Otherwise, try a different card.

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]Thanks for the advice. I will try something with the video card. First I will have to find out how to do it. This site should help!

Does your new LCD require a driver or is it only the video card?

Solve : Installing a new motherboard with an old HD?

Answer»

Hello, recently we had some COMPUTER problems with a computer here in the office. We sent it to a repair SHOP and they said it needed a new mother board and they wanted over $300 to repair it

I know I can buy one cheap over at newegg, so I plan on doing that... but I have a few questions.

I remember having problems switiching hard drives between 2 computers once because the MB had the hard drive on file or something... so an error would occur. Will anything similar to this happen if I installed a new MB?

Also, these computers are pretty old, maybe 128 ram tops, Win 2k Professional. Would a NEWER MB suck up too much power? Resulting in me having to buy a new power supply as well?

I hope I was able to DESCRIBE my problem good enough for everyone here.

Thanks What did the repair shop tell you........CPU add it...motherbard had it.....etc......win2k needs a ramstick of 256 a least to run properly?thsi depends on what you wish to use the pc for? they can run on 128 ??If new motherboard has same chipset, it has a chance of working. Swapping motherboards is a "hit or miss" situation. You should probably plan on reinstalling Win2k.

Solve : Uninterruptible Power Supply?

Hello all, I just solved a few issues with my computer. Under the LAST thread"monitor shadows". Thanks to all who contributed!
I have a new question.
If I am having psu issues, is it worth it to just replace the power SUPPLY? Is it even possible?
I also have power issues at the outlets in my house. Brown outs, power outages(very brief computer boots right back up),
lightning in the summer
What is a UPS and can one help me?
TIA Mike
For one, if your power supply is going bad, you can get a new one and install it. secondly, a UPS WOULD help you, becuase it acts as a "battery" for your desktop, so if the power goes out, the computer is still getting electricity, but for a limited time... The UPS constantly charges itself once plugged into the wall...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145026

That's the RAM that I have right now. Should I just buy more of that or get another kind of RAM. My motherboard doesn't support Dual Channel so I can't get the better kinds. Thanks in advance.http://www.crucial.com/RAM itself can not be dual channel. Your mainboard may support Dual Channel.

If you think that your motherboard can not support faster RAM, you would do wise as to buy the EXACT same RAM as you have now installed to rule out COMPATABILITY ISSUES.

Solve : ASUS A7V Rev.1.02?

Answer»

Can anyone tell me the highest Mhz CPU that I can drop into my Asus A7V WITHOUT having to play with jumpers, reconfigure bios settings or do much of anything to the computer.
In 1995 I bought & built my computer with the HELP of a Tech Wizzy friend.
I originally had a 750Mhz AMD K7, then a few years back I upgraded to a AMD Athlon 1.0 Mhz.
Im running Windows XP, 640MB of SDRAM, Gforce FX 5200, an old sound blaster card.
My Computer is used for GAMING mostly. Most games these days are requiring at least 1 Mhz. I play Everquest 2 which runs ok on med graphics settings even though they SPOUT that system requirements call for 1 gig of memory and a 1.2Mhz Cpu.
I bought a new game the other day, Silent Hunter 3, just to find out that it won't even load the DVD in my computer. The gme CALLS for a 1.4Mhz CPu minimum.
SO, I went to the PC shop & bought a AMD Sempron 2500+ 1.83hmz CPu only to find out that the guy at the store didn't realize that my Asus A7V has a FSB of 133 & the AMD 2500 has a FSB of 266 or somthing..anyways it didn't work & now they are chumping me 10% restocking fee when I return the CPU.
Bottom line...............I don't want to make the same mistake twice.......So, Whats the fastest CPu that I can drop into my Assus A7V Rev 1.02 Without having to do much of anything........Oh can someone send me a pic of where the jumpers or switch is on my MOBO to open up the FSb to higher setting...

Thanks

CPUless in SeattleShall I ....no......imhao.......the pc is a work tool.....and not really made for gaming purposes.....i would by a playstation.......or thou pc gaming makers would like to think that their software will run on anything .....including the dustbin lid......it does not.....limitations are a bound.....pc//////games machince.....thats the reason for msoft bringing out the xbox.....so do what to spend idle cash ruining a p cto run a game! imhao.......You have maxed out that motherboard, 1000MHz is the limit. Take Merlin's suggestion. You can not expect new games to run properly on such an aging system. You should keep it for Internet, older games and other work that is not graphically demanding.

Overclocking would not do you much good. All jumper configurations can be found in the mainboard manual.

Solve : No power on HP Pavillion after memory add?

Answer»

Hardware:
HP Pavilion a430n
1 - 512 M DDR PC2700
Supposed to support up to 2Gb.
250 Watt power supply
Working fine when I started

Decided to add additional 512 M to 2nd slot. Installed PNY D512MPPC27OPT and reassembled case. No power. Power supply has led that should light solid but fast blinks. I removed new memory but PS light still blinks. I removed all pci cards but no change. PS led lights normally only if I unplug motherboard power connection. Plugged PS into second motherboard and led lights correctly but I don't have peripherals to test a real boot. I've never had problems on other computers adding memory. HP says WARRANTEE expired 3 months ago. This sound like a motherboard problem or flaky power supply?

Ideas? Thanks.Hi Bob,
I hope i can help. First off, 250W PSU seems kind of on the low end. But if your system was working fine before you added the new ram, then i strongly would tend to think it's either the ram itself OR the ram slot. Though your initial assumption of the power supply can also be correct since if you have lets say, 2 cd drives, a floppy, a myriad of usb devices etc, then it might have overloaded the psu itself. Have you checked to see if the powersupply has a reset buttun or breaker switch on it? USUALLY located near the fan up top on the rear of the system. If you have tested all the ram chips in another pc, and they are ok, then for sure its the motherboard "DIMM" slots or the PSU itself. Without a Multi-meter to actually take voltage readings, thee is no way to tell for sure. Google "memtest" and that should help determine if your ram chips are ok. Keep US posted on what you find.Be certain the memory modules are firmly seated.

Is the memory compatible with HP computers?Visit hp website for clearing the bios.........normally take out the cmos battery?I spoke with PNY about the memory and they were pleasant but hadn't heard of a similar problem. I tried memory in another computer and it worked. PNY said the additional memory should take about 5 watts. Reset CMOS but no help.

Resolution: Installed an Antec 350 watt power supply.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.A minimum of 300 watt is recommended for MODERN computers.

Solve : Is my RAM module bad?!??

Answer»

I was trying to upgrade my Gateway SOLO 1450 from by adding a 512 MB chip to the already existing 128 MB. I called Gateway and also went through the crucial.com memory chip selector to make sure I got the right one.

I purchased a KINGMAX 512MB PC133 chip from newegg. When I put the chip in along with the 128 chip. It starts to boot and then I get the FOLLOWING BLUE screen of death message:

STOP C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemroot\system32\sonfig\DEFAULT or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. Beginning dump of physical memory.
Physical memory dump: (countup) Contact your system admin or technical support group for further assistance.

If I take the upgrade ship out then the computer boots fine with the message that it recovered from a serious error:

BCCode : 1000007e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : 80608809 BCP3 : F8A45A08
BCP4 : F8A45708 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 0-0 Product : 768-1

I haver tried swapping the memory around and the same thing happens. I have tried booting with only the 512 memory and I dont even see a boot screen. When both MODULES are in the BIOS reads Slot1: 128MB Slot2: 512MB.

I have also tried to upgrade video drivers and repairing WINDOWS from a boot disk. When I tried to repair the drive, a message said the the C: drive was corrupt and unrepairable.

I was wondering if I just have a bad module or is it some other problem?? If it is a bad module, would the BIOS be able to read that it was a 512 chip??? Thanks for any info anyone can give.

Yes.

Solve : IBM DeskStar Hard Drive Problem.?

Answer»

I am trying to use an older Hitachi/DeskStar Model IBM-DTLA-307030 in a Dell machine. With Fdisk, I can remove all the partitions, but when I select "use all drive for primary partition" I only get 2042 megs. (Yes I enable large disk support first!). I then removed the primary partition both with and then without large disk support utilized, but it makes no DIFFERENCE. I get 2 gigs usable out of a thirty GIG drive. I can't even use the remauining drive for an extended partition. It is like a 2 gig drive! I know it used to work as a thirty, and it is clearly labeled a 30.
I have used all of the Hitachi/IBM tools that show no need fopr a firmware update, it tests out fine with the diagnostics and it shows it as a 30 gig drive. None of the "DeathStar" clicking noises as many have reported as these drives fail. But I am stumped!!
All help appreciated.

No Spyware/Adware or VIRUS. I use Linspire on my other computer!. Ask me about it.

The following web site can help as well as download tools especially for the Hitachi drives

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#Drive%20fitness

The tool DDD-SI shoild be able to do the adjustments enabling full use of the driveFormat the hard drive......and no comment on the hard drive you have chosen!I used all of the Hitachi/IBM tools. I do get a lot of clicking and stalling of the program during the sequential write tests. The bios of the GX1 sees it as a 2 gig drive (both before and after fdisk. The Hitachi/IBM software sees it as a 30.

Ready for the trash can???The harddrive in question should have been in the dumpster with the rest of them?absolutely useless! Can you not contact IBM technical support and ask them for the correct diagnostic software before discarding the HDD? If it is still seen as 30GB, it may just be an improperly configured BIOS.. Have you set the VARIABLES yourself or are you using autodetect?

2. Make certain it is detected in the BIOS
3. Make certain that the BIOS supports the (size of) the HDD.

If it a SATA HDD, you will have to load drivers by pressing F6 during INITIALIZATION of Windows XP installation. The trick is......leave the old hard drive in place.....add the new drive as a slave....and transfer files across to it.< file transfer wizard>.. then if you WISH you can format the drive..... you could take out the cmos battery for ten mins....to clear it......if you take this route be careful.....esd.... most use an iso drive image to assist changing h/d s

What should I do to get this message again? You should enter your BIOS and configure it to prompt the USER to enter the BIOS and SET it to normal boot as opposed to Quick boot.

Solve : A7V Rev 1.02 /AMD Sempron 2500+?

I just bought a new AMD Sempron 2500+ for my older ASUS A7V Kt133 Rev 1.02. and its not working. It boots but HANGS up before it starts the OS. The computer only recognizes it as 1066Mhz Athlon.....I got 640Mb of ram, Gforce FX5200, and most of my bios & drivers are up to date......can anyone help...Im no good with computers. I've played with the Vcore & other settings in my bios but nothing seems to work...Can someone GIVE me a step by step.....oh,,,I lost my MoBo manual...=(

Thankshi Steve, sorry to HEAR about your troubles, but unfortunately i have more for you. Your MOTHERBOARD does not support 200MHz FSB. It SUPPORTS 100MHz FSB.

Generally KT133 chipset motherboards are unstable or won't boot with Athlon XP chips, but some will. However, if you buy an Athlon XP, it won't work at the correct speed even if it does work; an Athlon XP 2500+'s 11x multiplier meant for 166/333MHz bus will only give you 1.1GHz on 100/200MHz FSB.

You could try out an Athlon XP 2400+, as it has a high 15x multiplier, and run it at 105/210MHz FSB x15 = 1575MHz, but even that has a good chance of not working, so it'd be best to try before you buy in a computer shop if possible. Keep us posted on how you make out. Cheers!

Solve : ISA Card but only PCI slots?

Answer»

I work in a lab and I'm trying to get a piece of instrumentation up and running. I'm WORKING on a very new computer, which only has available PCI slots, however, the card I NEED to install for the instrument is ISA.

Are there any adapters available commercially which I can use to bridge the PCI slot and ISA card?

Buying a new card is out of the question as to the cost of the card, so please don't RESPOND with that.

Thank you.I've seen this coming. Lab equipment is usually very expensive and not replaceable. Probably COSTS 10X what your nice, new computer costs. It would be cheaper and simpler to find a slightly older computer that still has 1 or 2 ISA slots in addition to the PCI slots. Most all Pentium II's and many Pentium III's have what you need.Random google search..Use an old pc......

Solve : Monitor power light blinks?

Answer»

I have a 10 year old Compaq MV920 Monitor. I just ADDED a 256 memory card to my 128 card now my monitor doesn't show a picture and the monitor power on light flashs.
I have hooked up a little 15 inch monitor I got at the computer dollar store for ten bucks and it works fine???Make certain all hardware is properly seated. Has the monitor worked before adding the memory module?Hello friend. Well according to situation you specify in your post....UMMM.. I think this is ONLU due to new RAM stick.
I think your board has two RAM slots. If more then still try this one. Just intercgange the position of two RAM stick. So that if 128 is present on first slot and 256 MB on the second then, put 128 in the second and 256 in the first slot and vise versa. But remember you must start connecting from the first in case you have more than two RAM slots. So both RAM stick must be present on first two RAM slots (if your board has more than two RAM slots).
If this works then fine otherwise take out both RAM sticks and clean the dust. Then again put them in the order described above.
If still not working then you must check your new RAM stick on some other PC bcz it may POSSIBLE that it is not working.
One thing here is that your monitor is perfectly alright :-)
Okay do take care of you and others and be happy.
DeWDoes you motherboard support this kind of ram upgrade
Take the 256ramstick out......
I did have the 128 ram stick in the first slot and the 256 second. didn't work I switched them and got the little monitor to work??
Yes, my computer has 3 slots and will take up to 3 256 cards for a total of 768(?)
Oh, by the way, thanks for the responses. Thanks for the feed back......and it pays to have pairs of ramsticks that match?

Solve : Lighting strike!!!?

Answer»

Hi

Can any ONE help I am trying to repair a computer for a friend who has bee hit by lightning, the modem has a hole in it!!!

I have replaced the modem but windows XP does not recognise the modem as a modem it only recognises it as a “PCI Serial port” Has anyone have any Ideas why this may happen??

Mother board is a ASROCK K7S8X

Andrew
WOW! I highly suggest you pull out that HDD and slave it to another system to check for data integrity. The fact that the modem itself is physically damaged and the machine still boots is incredible! But in answer to your question, try re-installing the modem drivers. Good luck though. CHEERS!Is your holy modem internal or external Thanks for a quick reply

The modem is internal!

All the data is intact

I have tried to install the drivers for the new modem but the system does not recognise the modem as a modem..

Thanks again

AndrewIf what you say is true, which I seriously doubt, and a hole has burned inside the Modem, I very much the PCI port would still be functioning.

I also very much doubt that anything inside the computer would still be functioning.

Are you certain that the hole was not meant to be present?Try returning that modem and getting an external one.I have just looked back at my posting and noticed what Raptor wrote.

The modem has not got a hole right through but the CHIP is fried go to www.creigiau.org.uk/modem and have a look.

There is still a problem with the computer

I have replaced the mother board to a Gigabyte 7VM333M RZ (VIA Chipset) from an ASROCK (SIS Chipset)
Replaced Processor to a AMD Sempron 2800+ from an AMD 2400+
New memory 512MB DDR from 128MB PC 133
New IDE cables

I have reused the Hard Drive Samsung
Also the CD Write & DVD
Case and power supply

The problem is now, I have managed to format the drive and get windows xp pro on with a few problems (files not found during FORMATTING).

Now that windows is on. I cannot put sp2 back on, while extracting files from the CD it comes up with an error message “Extraction Fault File corrupt” then is cancels the installation. I have downloaded the update of the net but it still will not install.

My thoughts are. Is it the power supply or hard drive (I have tried a new Hard drive but it was the same) or bios (Looked at website for gigabyte and found that the highest update is F4 but I have F5 could this be the problem, can I go Back?)

Can any one help??

Thanks

Downgrading is never a good idea. You may be looking at the wrong BIOS DOWNLOAD section or the BIOS version you have has not yet been released for download.

Are you trying to install a legal or copied copy of Windows XP? Have you fully reformatted the HDD and are all the fans operating?

You may have created partitions that are still filled with data or you have used the Quick format option for either FAT32 or NTFS.

The latter is what you should not do. Having additional partitions with important data does not matter, however, if these partitions contain no data you wish to keep, reformat them to be certain they are not causing problems.

Solve : Won't Boot...sometimes?

Answer»

Here are the specs:

Mach Speed mobo
AMD Duron 1.8
512 mb Viking RAM
80 GB Hitachi HD
WinXP Pro w/sp2

When I booted up earlier today, the boot was EXTREMELY SLOW. It spent about 20 seconds on the boot screen, moved to a second boot screen, but never started booting up XP.

After it sat around for about an hour unplugged, I tried it one more time before taking it to the SHOP. It worked! Booted up fine, just like normal. 20 minutes later I had the same problem again: after a restart, it froze.

I already determined that the RAM and HD are fine. I left to go buy a new mobo and processor and got back about 4 hours later. Figured I would boot up one more time before tearing the THING apart. What do you know, it worked again. No sign of any problems.

I'm SO confused. At this point I can't even try replacing components to figure out which one is bad because sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If anybody has any ideas what could be causing these problems please let me know. I'm very confused.

Here's a brief recap for those who chose not to read the long narative above:

- Veeeeeerrrrrrrryyyyyy ssssssllllllllloooooooowwwwww when booting.

- Can get into BIOS, but won't begin to boot XP pro.

- After SITTING for awhile, it works fine.

- Problem isn't with the RAM.

- Have a new mobo and processor (both still in the box) sitting next to me, I'm willing to try them if you think it will help.

Thank you in advance.
