Solve : power fan below threshold?

Answer»

i just finished building a pc but there are a couple of things i CANT FIX:

1. when i CHECKED the pc probe it said that the "power fan is below threshold" and i cant fix it.

2. the motherboard tells me that the "CPU fan failed" and when i checked the cpu temp it was at 30 C. the fan was spinning at 1360 rpm so i figured it worked. what is a good temp for the cpu?

this computer took me $500 to make and i really want it to run at 100%.Re-check your work!>http://www.buildyourowncomputer.net/learntobuild.html Quote

Few CPU fan runs that slowly. MB temp of 30 is low. Are you getting this reading from the BIOS or from WINDOWS?

Solve : My "friend" in overhead w/ new desktop a?

Answer»

My "friend" tried to assemble the following new COMPONENTS in a used Gateway case:

1. Elitegroup 848P-A motherboard w/ fans
2. Pentium 4 CPU
3. MaxPower 300w power supply
4. Samsung SW 252 CD-RW
5. Generic FDD
6. Hitachi Deskstar 80G, parallel ATA, 7200rpm HD
7. SuperTalent PC3200 512MB DDR400 RAM
8. Radeon 9200SE graphics card

Standard configuration had apparently been set in the Setup Utility. The IDE devices & jumpers were configured Master/Slave per mfg instuctions.

Friend not clear on "clock speed" & BIOS concepts.

Upon powering up w/ new XP Home OS cd, lights & fans start & (hp) monitor shows "Phoenix TECHNOLOGIES..." then all shuts down after about 15 seconds. Restart attempts last only 5 seconds.

Friend tried a 450W PS with same results.

Any suggestions for my poor dead end friend?

Have him check all the heatsinks and fans.

If it works, but shuts down, it could be overheating.

Any beeps or did he fail to connect a PC speaker? The (2) fans are working. Would the CPU be likely to overheat in 15 seconds?

The speaker is CONNECTED, but no beeps can be heard. Quote

1. The (2) fans are working.

2. Would the CPU be likely to overheat in 15 seconds?

1. Which fans are these? A computer should have at least 3 fans;

I. GPU fan
II. PSU fan(S)
III. CPU fan

2. Yes. irreparable damage can occur within these 15 seconds as well.

He should remove and reconnect all hardware. Have him take extra care when readjusting the heatsink. If he did not add thermal paste, he should do so now.make sure the pentium cpu fan is connected to the pins at the side of the block connection its right up against it. if the a cpu can blow instantly giving a sharp pungent smell.

Solve : sudden problem with sound?

Answer»

Suddenly today my sound in my computer stopped working -- system, music, everything; Dell latitude laptop with Sigmatec C-Major Audio card, computer thinks everything is working fine. Went through the whole windows troubleshooting lack of sound). section on sound and everything seems fine (except of course for the I can hear faintly from the computer (though all volumes are blasting at max), but if I plug in a headset I actually don't EVEN hear any faint sounds through the headset.

Oddly, the one really loud sound I can hear is when my Skype phone rings; that sounds loud and clear.

Does this sound like a problem that can be resolved by purchasing a plug n play soundcard, or is there likely to be another culprit?

Thank you in advance!Hi there, hope i can help. You actually have several options here, so lets see if we cant get your sound back up.

1. Have you tried System Restore? You may be able to go back to a date before this problem occured to restore your sound.

2. Creative Labs makes a Sound-Blaster that is USB powered, this is a sound card that you can upgrade to by simply plugging it into your USB port.

3. Just cause your volume is UP, does not mean your volume is UP there may be a 3rd party software that actually is in control of your volume, I know on MY laptop I have installed other software that take charge of my sound properties. you may have inadvertently done the same. Skype may be the culprit here.

Hope this helps, but try the System Restore option first, it may be the one that does it, if not, see if any new software you have installed is actually taking control of your sound properties. Cheers. Quote

Can you hear this sound over the external speakers or the internal PC speaker? '

Are you certain that you did not mute all sounds?I'm hearing the loud system Beeping sounds (the Skype ring, and now I have heard a loud beep because my battery died) over the internal laptop speakers; I don't have any external speakers.

Nothing is muted, at least not visibly.

Marry me, Cary Grant? System restore worked -- which is weird, because I had tried this in my panic yesterday but only restored to THURSDAY (because the sound was working on Thursday, this seemed reasonable to me). This time I restored to Tuesday and now suddenly everything is magically working again....thank you!

I also MODIFIED some settings in Skype which I think should prevent it from happening again...I do think that was the culprit.
What settings were these?

You should indeed be careful, as certain programs do tend to lower the master volume for the entire PC and not just for the program itself.I unticked the box that allows Skype to automatically adjust volumes...I think this is a good thing? Skype clearly needs to have less control of my computer than it does.

Someone on the Skype forum suggested to me that Skype had turned off the 20 db boost, which doesn't seem to be an obvious setting that I can reset (except by the system restore). Quote

1. I have never used Skype, but I would assume that automatically adjusting volumes would be nice if people suddenly decide to yell.

You may want to refrain from using system restore too often, as it can cause problems.

The mic boost (I assume this is the same as the 20DB boost) can often be configured from:

1. The volume icon on the system tray (Next to the clock).
-- Does not seem to work for default Windows sound card drivers.

2. From within the program. See if there is an option somewhere that allows you to enable this, I tried looking for a manual but could fine none.

However, there does seem to be a rather useful trouble SHOOTER

Solve : Computer locks up. Horrible noise from speak?

Is this Vcore warning anything serious or related?

Warning 236 : CPU 1 [Processor 0, Core 0, Thread 0] : Vcore higher than rated maximum. Check Vcore setting!

The mainboard which runs too hot may be due to the higher-than-normal Vcore.

What voltage is your Vcore set to?Have you overclocked it!No! I haven't been overlocking... I wouldn't even know how to do it

Sandra software has a value "Core Voltage Rating". Is it the same thing as Vcore?

The value is 1.500V

in BIOS there was a value "Vcore Normal", and it was 1.5V too.

In Sandra, it also lists a sensor reading from the CPU,"CPU Voltage" which was 1.58V.

Looking more carefully to the Mainboard ANALYSIS, I also found these temperatures:

Board temperature: 25C
CPU temperature: 27C
Power / AUX temperature: 70C

It had a kind of warning sign beside the Power / AUX...

It's nice to get help... My computer has GONE worse Quote

Solve : video capture device not detected?

Answer»

video capture device not detected, I purchased a JVC digital camcorder model GR-D30u it has Fire wire capabilities so I bought a firewire card and INSTALLED it. I am using windows movie maker 2 and when I try to select a video capture device a message pops up STATING that no video capture device detected.Have you installed non standard windows drivers for the following hardware;

  • Videocard
  • JVC CAMERA
  • Firewire card
The Firewire card is a plug and play type, but I don't have any software for the JVC camcorder, I called them for support but they claim that it is not needed. I know that the computer needs some kind of software to ID the device or it will list it as an unknown device. Also I don't have a video card, guess that's part of the problem? any recommendations? Quote
Also I don't have a video card, guess that's part of the problem? any recommendations?

Every computer has a videocard (GPU), otherwise the monitor can not be connected.

The problem may lie with the videocard drivers, if these are standard Windows drivers you will most likely not be able to fully make use of the videocards potentional.

Try the following to obtain the name of the videocard:

1. Start
2. Run
3. type DXDIAG
4. Monitor tab

I know that the computer needs some kind of software to ID the device or it will list it as an unknown device.

Is there any hardware listed as unknown device?

Report the name showm there.I have a NVidia Geforce FX 5200

I have no unknown issues

however the computer does not ID the hardware as even being there.1. The firewire card is detected?
2. You have installed Nvidia drivers as opposed to Windows default drivers for the videocard?
3. Is Windows Movie Maker configured? I have never used this program, but you may need to select a videocard which you wish to use first.OK, yes firewire card is detected.
I removed the video card and rest the display drivers to windows drivers. and As far as I can tell movie make auto detects video capturing devices when you request to capture live video. but the message of no capturing device apearsLoad the jvc disk that came with the camera? It did not COME with oneWell, I kind of found part of the problem. With the Firewire card, and the model camera I have I can only download still pics. But with a third PARTY software I can use the camera as a capturing device (limited) However with a Firewire video capture card it will work fine with windows xp moviemaker2. And with a TV video capture card with an s coaxle or DV-I connection or RCA jacks will do the same job, it aslo includes the soft to run a video editing program. but the video capture card does not work well with windows xp moviemaker of any kind, thats why the card comes with its own software.

Thank you for your help, it lead me in the right direction and I hope this information will be useful to anyone else. Happy editin'

Solve : PC problems? HELP!?

Answer»

Hey,

At christmas my family got a new pc (from Tiny, not the best I no), but its stats were fantastic and it appeared to be a great all round media centre for the family.

Since we got it however we have had many probems, and I need answers.

Its hard to explain, but one way I can put it is that my PC KEEPS forgetting stuff.

-occasionally it will forget to load some programs or there will be an error on start up
-Sometimes it completely forgets user areas and will crash at the user screen
-Some windows components/settings will change
-Registry values occasionally have to be 'recovered by log or alternate copy(?)'
-other things such as not remembering my quick launch bar, control panel stops loading, system restore points dissapearing.....

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with the PC??!! I CANT have a virus as it has been reformatted 4 times sine christmas, all due to fatal spontaneous problems when booting up (completely out of the blue) such as blue SCREENING or missing important user files. Sometimes the comp will work fine and other times it needs a couple of attempts to load properly and other times when i restart that is 'the end'. I fear it is heading to another big crash as completely out of the blue all my system restore points have vanished, control panel does not load, quick launch bar is missing even if I put it back on.... AHH!

I am sick of loosing all my data, and reformatting the comp.

Anyone any suggestions?

If you are unhappy with the pc take it back to where is was purchased or call out the service techs......even though grenville has also crashed tiny/time pcs........the warrenty is still ok !......There is no quick fix for why a pc does crash/hung/freezes.....loads of reasons slung together for cash reasons ....bad componenets used......etc the list is endless......Yeah well the thing is that Tiny are so unhelpful and almost adement that it is me that has screwed it up. I am sick of paying £1.50 a min on their stupid phone line talking to a brainless monkey who cant spell computer.

Does anyone have any idea if it could be a specific hardware issue? Or an idea what is wrong? I can give comp specs if you need Try this>http://www.active-hardware.com/english/misc/sandra.html

to see if an hardware issue......and download spysweeper from webroot.com or adaware...from lavasoft.......and you can have VIRUSES.......they normally lurk in the system restore feature......disable it and disconnect from the while scanning for bugs.....Thanks.

Yeh I relise that my comp could have a bug but that should dissapear every time i reformat it.

My worry is that it is something more serious like caching problems or a nakered harddrive, as my computer is has been aparantly clean of viruses the 3 times it has completely crashed. I dont think software will fix the problem simply because I have tried all that stuff before and it hasnt helped. Does anyone know which if a specific malfunctioning piece of hardware could caus this....

Any more ideas lol??

I refer to answers i gave some moments ago!Do you have antivirus, antispyware, antitrojan and firewall set up before you connect to the internet?
A 'fresh' UNPROTECTED computer on the net has only minutes before infection occurs.yes I had all that set up before. it even went to a computer technician in college to be setup after the 3rd time it crashed. I have norton corporate, sygate firewall, spyware protection, adaware etc.....

Still it crashes.

Any more suggestions? Did you take Merlin's advice and see if any hardware is causing this?

Solve : Turned PC into $1500 beeping machine?

Answer»

This morning I arose as I normally do, shuffled the wife off to work, and started up my computers, looking forward to a day of gaming, cigarettes, coffee, and (once noon rolls around) beer.
My Norton popped up on my desktop saying "Thou must updateth thy virus definitions!", so I did. Then the obligatory "Thou must restarteth thy computer." So I did. As it was restarting I was tooling around on my laptop, thus not paying attention to the Desktop. When I looked up it was the dark grey limbo screen that you get between all the startup crap that it displays in ASCII and the little floaty windows logo, and there it remained. No bleeps sweeps or CREEPS coming from the CPU, just the fan whirring away. So I tried to restart by a number of methods (Ctrl+alt+del, push power button once - which on my COMPY defaults to normal shutdown, then when nothing else worked, I HELD in the power button). After it was shut off, I unplugged my BLUETOOTH adapter and digital camera, then POWERED up. It gave me a series of beeps (once, three short, three short, once or beep, beep-beep-beep, beep-beep-beep, beep) and proceeded to do absolutely nothing except run the fan. Nothing starts up (monitor keyboard mouse etc) and I am completely at a loss as to how to do anything about this.
Dismayedly yours
ChavezWhat O/S were you running?

Are you sure you downloaded updates from norton? lol...Joy of joys!
Thank you all for reading my newest anecdote. Here's the conclusion:
In my frustration I employed a desperate maneuver. I unplugged everything from my desktop, placed it in the middle of the office floor....
and let it sit there.
As I frantically searched forum after forum (this one included) I would periodically stare menacingly at the offending unit.
With a quick prayer to the gods of Good Mojo, I plugged in the monitor keyboard and power cord and started 'er up.
Lo and behold! Windows!
All hail Orlo-Chavez, Super Genius.
Thank you all, and enjoy your Thurday.omg....you are helarious....I worship you...

I wonder what the problem was...

Solve : Left-overs!?

Answer»

Hi everyone.

I have recently embarked on my first self build, and to my amazement, it actually worked!!

My only confusion, was with some of the cables coming from the front panel. I have plugged in everything CORRECTLY (I think), apart from the following:

2 cables coming from the front panel, both joined together - one with a label SAYING "mic" and the other with a label saying "ear". The go to form a 10-pin connector. (1 blocked off).

Then, out of this connector come seven 1-pin plugs:

MIC
MIC BIAS
RET - L
RET - R
FPOUT - L
FPOUT - R
AUD GND

I have consulted both the case manual, and the motherboard manual, but neither SEEM to describe exactly what I can see.

Sorry if I am being dumb, but I managed everything else apart from this..

Thank you in advance of any replies posted.
Kop442000Those may be used for the front Microphone and Earphone plugs you often find on newer cases.

The mainboard may be colour coded or somehow indicate how the CONNECTORS should be connected.

Since these connectors are often part of the case, you may not find the instructions in the mainboard manual. See if you can obtain the case manual (If such a thing exists) or if you can get a general guide on how to connect any connector that is inside a system case.I have the case manual, but it doesn't seem to mention the things that I am asking about.

I will check on the net, and see if I can find anymore details.

If you know the manufacturer of your system case, you may be able to E-mail them and ask for instructions. Doubtful this will work, but you can try.Yes spares sometimes happen i have an ATTIC full of them,

Solve : Major Bios problem?

Answer»

I do not know if this is the correct place for this but i have reached dire straights...
Last day of school and a member of my class thought it fun to mess with my bios.
The primary drive has been changed to cd-rom and secondary drive to something else, i do not know what - please note this is not boot order this is primary drive so now it will not load anything.... how can i solve this? Boot pc and hold down >maybe the f9 key......save and exit>>f10 keyno GO, tried that before COMING on here, it will allow me to press f2 to enter bios but then sits there doing nothing same as if i do not press it. i can not enter bios to change it back by this way!! Try resetting the BIOS by removing the CMOS battery.
hey thanks, that worked and have now reset bios, cheers!!Some BIOS or brand computers allow you to password protect the BIOS or hide the BIOS setup notification message. I suggest you look into this. This REMINDS me...

Two years ago when I was a freshman...My friend Mike and I tried to be "punks" or w/e...and we formatted the Hard Drive on a computer in study hall, and then messed with the BIOS settings. Then, we password protected the settings...but the password we used was (name of school's network admin. is an IDIOT).....He must have guessed it....cuz sure enough, the computer re-appeared...

When I next tried to start my computer, the computer startes...but the monitor does not recieve any information and only shows the
"Monitor self test/Your monitor is working correctly/Please check your monitor cables/or power cords" Or something along those lines. This has happened before on a different computer and it was the motherboard that was fried...so I really assume that is the problem, but any help is wanted. Solve : dvd and cd drives show as unknown in device manage?

I have tried updating the drivers and firmware, flashing the Bios with an updated version, uninstalling and reinstalling (both secondary IDE Channel and the device itself) but nothing seems to work. It does show up in the BIOS. It has been working normal for PROBABLY a year and about two days ago it did that.

What do i do? lol thanks for help guys.

thought id post here to see if ne1 sees it over here and wants to help out.Back to the drawing board. Forget the boot floppy for the time being. Reboot the computer. When you get to the C:> prompt, do the following:
1. type REN config.sys config.old <enter>
2. type ren autoexec.bat autoexec.old<enter>
3. type scanreg/fix<enter>
Reboot the computer and post back the results.it let me get all the way down to scanreg/fix but then i got the bad command or file nameOK. Type cd\windows<enter> and repeat the scanreg/fix command. invalid directoryNuke it
Do a fresh install.Lost me....try thinking of it as your talking to a newb....Did you use \ or / when the typed the cd command? Type the command exactly as shown.i did it with both with

/ i got Invalid switch - /windows

\ got invalid directoryType dir/p/w and look through the listing. Directories will be listed in brackets like [WINDOWS]. See if the windows directory is in the list or has possibly been renamed. If nothing seems obvious, type dir/s win.* and see if can find win.com or any other file with win as part of the name.Nope it said in the beginning that it couldn't find Win.com and i dont see anything in the dir that has win windows windo or anything else that would resemble windows in it.Did you do the dir/s command?Whoa, i did that and the screen just kept scrolling with all these files and such.

Solve : Newbie Q re: USB hub?

Answer»

I intend to add a separate keyboard to my Toshiba Tecra A1 LAPTOP. I have a GE brand USB 2.0 hub (because my laptop does not have enough USB ports for my needs).

I hooked up 2 USB cables to the USB hub and after a couple of hours I noticed it was extremely hot to the touch. I removed it immediately from the laptop. (I had used same Hub a few months ago and worked FINE.) Any ideas? Discard and buy a new one? Try again?

Newbie here. Just do not want to destroy my COMPUTER! Thanks so much!
What is extremely hot for you?

CPU heatsink hot?
PSU casing hot?

Is this USB hub powered by an external power supply?1. Hot to the touch. Did not BURN my fingers but close.

2. Yes. It is plugged into a surge protector/outlet. Quote

You should E-mail the manufacturer and see what they can tell you about maximum and optimal working temperatures.

I would assume that it is normal for electrical devices to become very warm.

Is the adaptor outside or INSIDE the hub?Does the hub work........you may have to have it plugged in to the adapter to charge it up!

Be certain that your mainboard supports 8X.

Your entire system will most likely become a bottleneck for the 256MB card.

Solve : mouse not recognized on booting up?

Answer»

I just got a NEW computer & connected it & my old one with a wireless network. Everything's been going pretty well (with typical kinks to work out) since we set it up a couple of weeks ago.

Now my Microsoft Intellimouse on my old computer won't work. When I boot up, the arrow is in the middle of the screen & the MOUSE doesn't work. A computer friend came over the other day when this happened (the only other time ever), unplugged the mouse & did a "cold boot" (I think that's what he said). He replugged it in & it WORKED great! Till today.

So... any info about getting my mouse to work properly would be terrific- even if you can just tell me how to do a "cold boot" again!

Thanks! http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=%2Fsupport%2Fhardware%2Fintellimouse%2Ffaq%2Fdefault.aspYou may need to reconnect it with the receiver.

Refer to your manual for instructions on how to do so.I don't have a mouse manual. What is my receiver & how would I connect it to it? Normally my mouse is just connected to the PS/2 port.

Could you tell me how to do a "clean boot"?http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315923I tried the microsoft help links that you sent, Merlin, but could not find an answer appropriate to my problem. Thanks anyway. Can someone tell me how to do a clean boot or give me some other advise? I'm getting DESPERATE!

While I was trying what y'all suggested & waiting for your REPLIES, I went online to Dell's chat customer support & we went into setup on the computer & did something (?-I don't really know what!) & it worked. SO... a mighty big thanks anyway for being there & trying. I will use your service again if needed! Thanks!
So what did the mighty dell do?send a file to pc?

Solve : scsi for old scanner on newer computer?

Answer»

My Dad has an old scanner that he does not want to PART with, and I really can't blame him as they really don't MAKE them like that anymore, the thing weighs over 20 pounds... It's an HP ScanJet4c, version 2.3. It has a 50 pin scsi terminal on the back and the included cable terminates w/a DB25 on the scsi card side. The unit came with a PCI/scsi card, a AdvanSys;ABP-930/40UA - ABP-960/70UA that is only compatible with Win 95-98.

He would like to use this scanner on a Compac PIII w/128Mb RAM running Win Me, VER. 4.90.3000 though he is willing to upgrade to XP.

I know there are products (PCI/scsi cards/adapters) available that will make this work but the DEALERS I have contacted have not gone out of their way to reply.

Thanks for any input or suggestions. Oh, and not too technical...

thanks,

Solve : Monitor too Blue?

Answer»

I have a Viewsonic PS790 19" monitor that has a blue tint to it. I tried several different COMPUTERS and it still blue. The blue isnt bad when I use a black background but if I pull up light colored web page it gets worse. Then if I make the web page full screen it gets much worse.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The monitor MAY be failing

Readjust the colour schematics manually to see if you can even out the colours.

I recently discarded a perfectly good working 17" monitor because the red colour channel had become too dominant. There was no solution to this problem.Control panel click the display icon click the performance tab......and knock down the slider. down a bit.......The refresh rate should be 60/75 MHZ...........or reload monitors drivers..Changing the refresh rate to 85htz helped alittle.... Ill just keep messing with it.Load the monitor drivers that may have COME with it Quote

Solve : Internal modem not dialing up?

Answer»

I wonder if any of you people out there can help me.A friend of mine recently gave me a Dell PC and since the specs are superior to mine I am using it instead of my own one.The problem is the internal modem. The PC is telling me it is there and I have seen it myself. but when I try to dial out I cannot get a dialing tone.My ISP is AOL though I don`t think that is a factor.I can get online using a basic external modem.I have a program on the PC "Modem check" everything comes up as OK,except the dial tone.Is there anything I have to do to activate it.?As far as I know my friend was able to use it Ok but he is away at present. As I say,it`s no big deal,I just wanted to try and save space by using the internal modem, rather than the external one. Contact your ISP for configuration details. You may need to (re)configure the modem and Windows before you can connect to the Internet.Aol......dial up lan....or dsl/cable......more info is needed>....operating system is ?....modem 56k/usb?? Aol......dial up lan....or dsl/cable......more info is needed>....operating system is ?....modem 56k/usb??

I should have been more specific about the system.I use, AOL dialup,Windows xp professional and the modem is a Dell internal HCF 56K modem.I tried doing what Raptor says but it is not that.I am told the problem is with Windows xp.I originally had Windows 98 second EDITION on the PC and upgraded to Windows xp profesional and apparently it screws around with dial up connections. The REASON I can connect using my external modem is because I installed AOL after Windows xp.I think I will just stick with that in the meantime.I am upgrading to AOL broadband soon, and that USES an external modem anyway. Thanks for the responses to my question though. An hcf 56k should not CAUSE any problems?/ remove the external modem from the device manager and unplug it and re-boot.........now do the same for the 56k.....winxp will find the 56k and should re-install the drivers for it.....Thanks for the responses guys,I finally got the problem solved.Basically, because Windows xp had`nt been installed on the PC before,I had to enable the code line TCP/protocol for windows to activate the modem.

Solve : Removing CD-Rom drive cover.?

Answer»

Can somebody help me??? My CD-ROM drive cannot open with its cover on top... What exactly can I do to make the drive works normal?

If I remove the cover, it cannot read CDs. So, can I get just the cover somewhere?

Thanks yo.Desktop /laptop.......what do you mean by cover? the cdrom drive with not open?Sorry, I mean the internal CD-ROM drive for a desktop pc.
I open the top of the drive and it works right away. The tray came out. But... when i put the top back on, it cannot come out.

Well, I wouldn't wanna replace it with a new one, there surely should be some thing that can be done on it to make it better rite? PLACE a paper-clip in the little hole ....this will release the cdrom draw......and make sure the plastic cover it a lined properly...... Quote

...I open the top of the drive and it works right away. The tray came out. But... when i put the top back on, it cannot come out....

I have no idea what you mean.He means the plastic front.Well, it seems LIKE nobody understands me...

Actually I took out the CD-ROM drive from the casing, and unscrew it and pull up the drive casing...

and then the tray works perfectly without the casing...once i put the casing back on, the tray wouldn't come out again...

I am not sure what's WRONG with the drive. and the small little whole near the eject button, i've tried, it doesn't WORK at all, the light blinks but the tray never comes out. This is really frustrating...

Please somebody help me!!!See to it that nothing is blocking the mechanism. The plastic front may be DAMAGED.

If you are refering to the metal casing, do not remove this.. Warranty will be voided. Quote
Well, it seems like nobody understands me...

Yep.Michelle, do you mean the plastic flap that folds away when the cd tray ejects ? What part do you mean when you say the "casing" ? We'll figure this out . . .

i think i may of got it. now my pc cam with XP on it i do not have a disic the disc is ont he HDD. now in my mind thats not safe. But could this second hard drive be the xp disc so to speak?

It is a hidden drive partition which contains the software that came with your computer. Many OEM makers do this.

Do you have a Recovery disk, or do you have the means of making Master Recovery CDs from this partition so that the 4 Gb can be used as data storage?

If you have, and do make the Master CDs, then you are faced with re-partitioning, re-formatting, and re-installing the entire system.

Having the CDs with all of the software OFF the drive IS safer, but if the drive fails you will need to re-tattoo any new drive in accordance with the OEM system to be able to use them, unless you make a drive image of the original install, preferably BEFORE adding any other software.

Don't include ANY personal details.

Just run the Help and Support to make sure that it will open later.
Right ok, Well my pc didnt come with the master CDs
When i had to scrub it all i tap F11 during setup and i can pick scrub and system restore etc.

So how do i make master Cds?My system is made by Packard-Bell too.

Look for Packard-Bell> Smart Restore on your Menu where there should be three icons. One for making a technical serivces floppy diskette. One for running check sums on the Master CDs and one for making the Master CDs.

ONLY use GOOD QULAITY CDRs and NOT CD-RWs, as the data can fade over time.

When the job is complete run the check-sums to make sure that the Master CDs are in good order.

You may then see the other drive show up as Restdone D:

This drive partition is not stable so when you do a re-install it will be deleted automatically.

If you want to partition you may need to use third party software to accomplish the job.

When I last did this on a Packard-Bell I just did a full OEM unattended install which made just the one drive C:

I then used TeraByte Unlimited's BootIT NG partition RESIZER on a floppy to shrink the partition down to 10240 MB and used XP's Drive Management to allocate the rest of the unallocated drive space. You do NOT need to install BootIT NG's boot manager, so cancel the install screens and go to the Partition Work button.

Make an extended partition first of all and then add, up to three, logical drives. You can FORMAT these using Drive Management too.

If you buy the BootIT NG suite you will get Image for Windows and Image for DOS to make and restore drive images and backups. Well worth the US$ 60.So with these CDs if i get a bigger HDD will i be able to put XP on that hard drive? Because thats the problim i want a 200 gig drive but i dont acually have windows XP install disk. That disc is on the HDD (the hidden one i think) So will this packard Bell Smart disk make that for me?

Solve : Computer Monitor intermittent pink?

Answer»

I get intermittent FULL screen color of "pink" that occurs periodically. It is especially noticable on normal white screen areas. I have checked and rearranged wiring to avoid electrical INTERFERENCES but it does not resolve the issue. This pertains to a 17" CRT color monitor.

Please advise.Have you tested the monitor on another computer?

Try degaussing it.No, I have not tried the monitor on another computer. I doubt it will make any difference. I had the same problem with another computer but it mysteriously cleared up. This computer with monitor was new in 2003.

As I mentioned, the color pink does not happen at all times. However, it is irritating to deal with the change.

Sorry for not responding until now. As of today, there have been no further episodes of the monitor pink screen. I will get back to you whenever it occurs again. If its a descent make ......contact the makers.....samsung for have a five years warrenty....run this ......type dxdiag in the run box and test for graphics....also what is the refresh rate and resoulition...?set at....The refresh rate is at 85 Hertz and the screen resolution is as 1024X768 pixels.

Try to obtain monitor drivers. They will reveal your true fresh rate and resolution. Only do this if the monitor is deteced as PLUG and Play.

We hooked it up just like at my house and the internet runs perfect. But when at my house it slows down after a bit.. I dont know what it can be. I just got a new router and ethernet. I have two computers hooked up to the router the one I am on now and mine. This one never has a problem but after awhile of being on the internet everything slows down and certain programs start to disconnect and reconnect. This only happens at my house. Any ideas?Have you CONTACTED your ISP? Maybe your connections speeds (which differ from ISP to ISP) are different... The connection speed that the ISP allows... Contact them...

How many phones have you got?......what are the o/s used on your pcs? firewall settings ok....are they.....I am on Roadrunner. at the moment, this problem occured soon as i got this comp on the internet. When i first got it i tried it out, took the ethernet out of this one plugged it in and it started right up. the very first day before i had a router it did this so im sure its not the router. I tried shutting down all my firewalls and it still slows down, and yet a game I like to play runs fine? Also tried scanning with several anti spyware and virus programs no luck. Its running windows xp professional. I have two phones at the moment. You are not using a proxy to surf the web, are you?TYPE this after the cmd prompt ping www.bbc.

3. It disables the use of the IDE connectors on the mainboard. Make certain that they are enabled in the BIOS.

4. It should work without as well.

2. Yeah it's there. But it's only being read as a regular CD-ROM drive.Does it read data?

What type of software are you trying to install? Firmware drivers or copying software?Yes it does read data - and I'm trying to install the copying software.See if installing firmware drivers allows it to be properly detected.

If that does not work, you may wish to remove the device from device manager and allow for redetection. So wiz.....the problem you have is loading the software for the burner?.......or WINXP does not reconize the burner? which statement is correct?I have got a cd rw/dvd rom combine drive and another cd RW drive, which have been working well for ages. However, recently, neither drive is accessble. In the device manager, there are ! marks before these drives, and click on the properties, it said 'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'. Windows website help suggests EDIT registry, but it does not work. I don't have windows CD rom to reinstall the SYSTEM (only a restore cd which would clear everything) And I can't even remove windows xp sp2 and reinstall it.
Please could someone help me solve this problem.
many thanks
DavidAnd you have also tried to remove the devices from device manager to allow for redetection?

Solve : To all you BBC Micro fans...?

Answer»

Hi,
Can you still buy (if they were EVER even made) 5.25" external 80/40 track floppy drives for modern computers AND still have the software/ROMs for it? I am interested in any way to transfer data between my BBC Micro to my dell optiplex gx150. I would use a serial LINK cable but my computers PROBABLY too NEW and fast for the poor old Micro, and I can't build it anyway.
Thanks.still parts available ......retro stuff.....you need a null modem cable to transfer stuff.......slow mind you?

Solve : all of a sudden my computer completely died?

Answer»

So, i just upgraded my system tremendiously. I got a amd 3000+ XP processor, XFX Geforce 6800 GT AGP, Elitegroup 755 A2 motherboard, and of course battlefield 2 to go along with all of this.

Now earlier today i was PLAYING battlefield 2 and all of a sudden my computer lost all power (only my computer not my moniter or anything else). Now it wont start up at all, and before it was running just fine. Today is only the 3rd day ive had it. What could have caused this problem.

By the way my Power supply is 400 watts

thanks for any help leading to me fixing this problem, or at least understanding itjared aka handsomeboymodl .........good thing I'm bilingual..........thats quite a handle .....lol

I would suggest checking to see if there is ( or ) was the proper amount of paste between the processor and the heat sink . Also check to be sure the heat sink fan is installed properly and is functional.

If the processor was overheated as a result of the additional load of the game ....that could well be your problem.

dl65 Check the power supply. Do you hear the fan come on inside the supply? Check the voltage at the power plug on the vid card or a drive. Should be 12 volts DC there I think. If you have a volt meter available...

Let us know more info when you check these things. Will it no longer turn on?

Are all cables and heatsinks properly connected? And are you certain it is no the wallsocket? Perhaps you've blown a fuse because your computer wasn't properly built..Did you overclock it?no overclocking whatsoever. The computer honestly didnt have any PROBLEMS running the game for the first TWO days. It turns on for about half a second about once every 5 TIMES i try. By the way i know it wasnt the wall socket because the moniter was still on, as was my RECIEVER for my stereo. If the processor wasnt being properly cooled then could that cause this to happen? I did just buy a new processor cooler, but it was a more expensive one with a huge fan and extra wide heatsink.jared aka handsomeboymodl.....If you didn't install the processor , thermal paste and the heatsink and fan assembly properly ........... what is happening to you could definately occur.

dl65 lemee give you guys a little bit more background information. The only thing i have upgraded in the last 2 weeks was my graphics card, and i did that just 3 days ago. Before upgrading my graphics card my computer ran very well for approx 2½ weeks (since getting the new processor). Because of this i am fairly certain that it has to do with my graphics card and the increadible amount of power it requires (aprox 35 more watts than my old one)I think it is still the power supply. If its not a true 400 watt supply it really isn't putting out 400 watts. Do you have the name brand of the power supply? If its generic it might be the problem.
If you think its the vid card, then remove it and put the old one in just to check if it will power up.

I have read also that the MB you have has very little room for any HSF than a oem one. You stated that you have put a larger one on. Check that it isn't hitting a capacitor or other MB object.

Keep us informed....What brand of PSU do you have?

Quote

Because of this i am fairly certain that it has to do with my graphics card and the increadible amount of power it requires (aprox 35 more watts than my old one)

Try the following page to see if you meet the wattage requirements:

Power Supply wattage calculatorDoes your graphics card have the right driver?Thankyou guys so much for all the help so far

I know the graphics driver was fine, otherwise it wouldnt have worked for 2 days

I believe that i have a fairly cheap brand of power supply
it is a Powmax 400 watt LP-9900

I really hope it is my power supply because they tend to be cheaper to replace then motherboards and or processors

also, is there anyway to test a power supply without plugging it into a computer. Like "jumping" it or something. Any kind of test to see if its working would be very nice
Quote
I really hope it is my power supply because they tend to be cheaper to replace then motherboards and or processors

If you buy a PSU, you should not buy the cheapest available. It may be attractive, but it is not worth it. Power is very important to the computer, and computer components are sensitive. Brand PSUs have a name to keep up. You pay for reliability. Not the name.Despite that, i found another POWMAX brand powersupply at 550 watts for only $18.

Using the watt calculator i really only have about 340 watts in my computer, so i dont think i am going to buy a power supply yet, since i still am not sure if a 400 watt power supply couldnt really handle 340 watts

Solve : Help with floppy?

Answer»

Hey peeps the thing is i have had a had a pc built with no floppy drive as i never used one so i thought id wouldnt have one.........anyways the pc run with no probs for a couple of months then i brought a new dvd drive and all of a sudden when i reboot windows xp sp2 PLUG and plays and finds a floppy drive.

I have checked all the ribbons no probs as i can see

i wouldnt mind but as i EITHER shutdown or restart it says about 15 time that the A: drive maybe be open please close it and i get 2 OPTIONS ignore cancel and continue but no matter whati press about 5 seconds later the same message comes up and this will last for over a minute b4 the pc shuts down

Any ideas any1

Cheers See if you can disable the FDD from the BIOS.i have tried disabling but the pc wont BOOT up afterwards but in the boot setup in BIOS theres no sign of it anywhere

What if you disable the FDD in the device manager? That way, the errors should stop.that does stop the errors but only until i restart the pc then the pc plugs and plays and finds the drive from outta no-where.

Thanks for the replies Did you uninstall or disable it?

Uninstalling it will cause it to be redetected. Disabling it should keep Windows quiet.

I suggest that you thoroughfully review the BIOS. The option to disable the FDD may be hidden under an advanced menu which could possibly only be accessed if you use a certain KEY configuration.

On the GA-7N400Pro with an Award BIOS (F14) it is CTRL + F1

What BIOS are is installed?

Solve : Dual core vs hyperthreading??

Answer»

I am planning to purchase a new computer with either an Intel 820 2.8GHZ dual-core chip WITHOUT hyperthreading, or Intel 630 3GHZ single core with hyperthreading. I understand the advantages of a dual core running multiple applications, but because I (sometimes, but usually) do not run more than one application at a time my question is slightly different.
Given two COMPUTERS with the same RAM, bus speed, cache, etc. etc., will the performance of a single application running along with the usual background utilities (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc) be better with a dual core? Or is a single with hyperthreading just as good? I was thinking that with a dual core, one would run the app while the other would handle the utilities? Utilities are probably not a very big issue now, but as they get increasingly intricate in the coming years, that may change.
My typical usage is 40% microsoft office, 40% web, and 20% gaming.
Thanks
EVEN though Hyperthreading has longer PIPELINES to get more done in a given amount of time, dual-core may still be the better choice, since hyperthreading forces a single-core to consume more power while offering a very little performance increase.

Solve : DSL Help Please!?

Answer»

Hello all! Here's the situation... I recenly bought a new computer, and I will be giving my old one to my mom, who will be USING it in this house... Now, I currently have Verizon Online DSL, whihc is in use my my new computer. Well, I now want to allow her to use a DSL connection as well... If I purchased another modem, and plugged it into the wall, would we both be able to use the internet at the same time? A router is out of the question, becuase the computers will be on complete opposite sides of the house... So if two Hi-Speed modems connect to different wall jacks in the same house, under the same phone number, will they both be able to use the internet? Please help me guys!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Have you ever heard of a wireless router? 2 modems will require 2 separate account numbers and thus, 2 bills, therefore, twice the cost.Yes I've heard of it lol but it's my FAULT. I should have explained more... ANY kind of router is not an option...

[glb]Flame[/glb] Quote

... ANY kind of router is not an option...

Why?
Well, a wired router is out becuase the computers are on opposite sites of the house... And a Wireless router is not good becuase you give up about 1/2 of your DSL speed with it... Plus I don't even know if it will reach that far thoughout the house becuase of architecture, etc.

[glb]Flame[/glb]One modem and one of these>http://www.usb-products.com/usb-hub.aspx

Max cable distant.....45 feet<15 metres>........ :)kSo plugging in two modems into different wall jacks in the same house won't work then? :-/

[glb]Flame[/glb]

1. You already stated that. BTW, 1 computer is wired to router, other computer is wireless.
2. Where did you read that? Is your DSL connection faster than 100mbps? I'll wager it is not. Wireless router is 100mbps which is at least 10 TIMES more bandwidth than your DSL line.
Read this: Speed
3. Test your theory with a 2.4 GHz cordless telephone. Range of best routers are 1000ft.
4. It will work, but you'll pay double the price.
I read that a while ago. I know that with wireless the comnnection speed suffers... MBPS... Also, I know someone who has a wireless connection... Slow... Loses connection often... Not my thing... Already tested Also, when you say I will pay double the price, you mean by buying a new modem, correct? Also, let me get this straight... If i buy a new hi-speed modem, I can do this? (A little suprised)

[glb]Flame[/glb]Call your ISP.

For example:
1 modem = $30/month
2 modems =$60/month
3 modems =$90/month

Why are you surprised? Can't you put more than 1 telephone on a single line?

EDUCATE yourself!!!
How DSL WorksBut I don't need a modem from Verizon... I can get it from anywhere... How would verizon know? I'll look at the link. Also, I was suprised becuase I heard something about the static on the line or something...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame ......Are you suggesting that if I were to use a wireless router as opposed to a wired router that the download speed would be 50 % .
I currently have a DSL connection and a wired router. and I just did a speed test and its 168.64kbps.......so if I use a wireless router it will be 84.32 kbps ........
Either I'm loosin it or you read something wrong ......
Could you please dig up what it was you read and post it here ......
Have you actually tried a wireless router in your house to see if it works........it either will or it WONT .........I'll wager you haven't .

BTW how big is your house from one side to the other ?

Let us know

dl65

Quote
... How would verizon know?

That's who you will pay every month for a 2nd service if you insist on not using a wireless router.

I've got a better idea which meets all your requirements. Get a cable modem for your mother and you keep the DSL modem. No need for a router. You will have 2 high speed modems on different wall jacks and be able to connect to the internet at the same time.

Thanks for the suggestions! Actually I just got done reformatting her HD... It is not taking DSL for some reason, so this is not much of an issue... Plus, when I asked if she wanted DSL before she wanted it, but now she says that she changed her mind But eventually we might do that. Let em first get her computer straightened out...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Are you saying "Nevermind"? This entire thread was a waste of time? I give up!!!

Solve : ASWL2K.exe (ASUS W-Lan card) uses up to 50% of my?

Answer»

In the windows task manager it display a RUNNING PROCESS from the file ASWL2K.exe, which I'm PRETTY sure is associated with the Wlan-cards.

The problem is that on my laptop the process ASWL2K.exe uses up to 50% of my cpu (AMD Athalon 64 3200+). The process fluctuates on and off between 0% usage and 50% usage, about every second. It really kills the performance of my computer.

The funny THING is that when I kill the process nothing happens, the network is still functioning. I can't find anywhere to permentally disable it either in msconfig or in the services list.

Is anybody familiar with this problem? And more importantly, does anybody KNOW what to do about this?

Let me know please...Virus scanners

Solve : Only getting 9 gigs out of my 40 gig HD?

Answer»

Now I'm farely certain of the how and why I'm having this minor little hickup...and thats not really the problem...I'd just like to know if it were at all possible to fix it...you SEE, quite a while ago i bought a 40 gigger from Wal-mart, to further support my gaming needs...and when installing the bugger i may have gotten a bit CONFUSED and partitioned the drive to be the exact same size as my second drive...which when all is said and done, rounds off to about 9 gigs (box says 10...but yeah)...so now im stuck (or so i think) with less space than id prefer...and really I was just wondering if i went and decided to format said drive....and tried the partitioning thing again....could i get that other 30 gigs back (31 whatever)....since its my main drive, I'd only do this if I was absolutely certain I could...oh and also what partitioning programs do you guys reccomend and if they're free where can i get 'em....any responses would be much abliged

heres my system specs off the top o' my head:

AMD athlon XP 2.0 ghz
Nvidia geforce 5600 256mb
integrated realtek audio
768mb 2700 DDR RAM (3 ram slots, 1 empty)

and the rest I cant quite remember
but that should be enough

again thanks ahead of time for any assistance given
Format the drive before use.......try a win98 boot disk...So you're saying It will work...even after already partitioning it as 9 gigs?...i can still get my 40gigs back?...an actual explanation would be nice....maybe even a FULL sentence...but dont hurt yourselfThis will do what your REQUIRE: Partition Magichit me on my email and we will see what we can come up with [email protected]OK is the new drive the master or the slave......?what did you format it with the winxp disk?or did you use these>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415/EN-US/40 Gb (Decimal) = 37.25 Gb (Binary) so you have 28.25 Gb 'missing'.

Better to use XP's Disk Mangement and allocate the 28.25 Gb.

If you need inexpensive but good Partitioning software then I use BootIT NG's Partition Resizer, which you can get together with a drive imager 'Image for Windows' and Image for DOS' for the nice price of US$ 60.

That is four programs at $ 15 apiece.

Yes, really!

Solve : Laptop touch pad problems! PLEASE HELP!?

Answer»

Hi, ive never posted on here before because Ive never needed to but yeah

Ok, today my laptop decided to break. its the touch-pad mouse. all of a sudden it just STOPPED working.

Ive tried everything, re-installing the driver etc and it keeps coming up that the device is working properly, but its obviously not!

the wierd thing is that there is this little icon thats always in the taskbar that does something if you touch the mouse, eg if you move the cursor it will flash up, if you press a button the little button will light up. but now nothing happens. its like it doesnt recognise that its there!

anyone HEARD of this? or know how to fix it?Do you have virus protection? Have you made any changes to your SYSTEM lately?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Im using AVG free, as I CANT afford to actually buy any kind of 'PROPER' software. There havent been any major changes at all.

I forgot to mention that when I go to add new hardware, it says that the device is working fine. Quote

Solve : Monitor screen too dark?

Answer»

Is there any way I can make my monitor screen lighter? The brighness & contrast controls are at the lightest and the screen is still very dark. I have gone into the display tab cannot find anything there to help me.

It is quite an old moniter (1996) so it may possibly be the age of it causing the problems.

Any feedback WOULD be greatly appreciated.

MickWhat o/s via the tower/desktop is attached to the monitor.......Sorry don't know what o/s means.

I have had a look at the power supply & there is one lead from the pc to to the power. Plus one lead from the pc to the monitor.

Hope this helps. Thanks Mick mick1052..... O/S = operating sysem ....for example Win 95 , Win 98 , Win 98SE , Win 2000 , Win ME , Win XP .

The issue with the monitor getting progressively darker......I would assume this has been going on for quite some time ......... Given the age of the monitor ...it's likely it may have seen better days........
It may be time for an new one .

dl65 Thanks for that.....my o/s is WINDOWS xp.

You are probably right .....maybe time to get a new monitor!TYpe dxdiag in the run box if you can and test for GRAPHICS......maybe you need to update the monitor drivers/as well as the graphic drivers

updated info>>http://testedproducts.windowsmarketplace.com/results.aspx?bCatID=792&cpID=0&ocID=0&OR=1Has the monitor became darker rapidly?

If your videocard drivers are capable of controlling the brightness and contrast of your monitor, first check to see if these are properly configured before attempting to DISCARD the monitor.

Testing it on another PC with an entirely different videocard is a very good idea as well.Have tried the activex diagnostic help....says ststem is fine.

The screen has become darker over a long period.....how would I access my videocard drivers to see if they were properly configured?

ThanksDepends on the videocard you are using.

For Nvidia and ATI (Proper drivers!) it would be either through the icon in the system tray or by right clicking on your desktop, selecting properties and going to the settings tab.

Solve : Unbootable laptop?

Answer»

I posted this at another forum but couldn't get a response yet. So, this is in regards to a Toshiba satellite t1910 laptop i got at a garage sale..

First of all, the computer only seems to respond to the power button when the AC adapter is plugged in. (no battery functionality?)

When the power is on, the power, number lock and caps lock lights turn on. The C: Disc-in-use light flashes. But other than that, nothing happens. The monitor is inactive.

The monitor doesn't seem to be the problem, because pressing caps lock doesn't take off the caps lock light, etc.

I thought the problem was that no OS was installed. So I made a DOS 5.0 boot disc and started the machine with it, but it didn't behave any differently. (The A: Disc-in-use light didn't flash at startup..)

I'm not sure if the problem is hardware or not? Should I try a different boot disc, or do something else? Given how old it is and how much I paid for it, for it not to work would be a disappointment but really not a surprise. though even still, if anyone could offer suggestions or advice it would be GREATLY appreciated..Does it have a hard drive??on the left side of the laptop...is a plastic slider..... if you pull it down it will show if you have an hard drive.Check to see if all the components are in place, as Merlin suggested. Remove as much as you can and inspect it for damage or broken cables.well.. i looked at it but nothing really stood out as damaged. although i couldn't find where to check for a hard drive? i made diagrams

so... yeah...on some tosh models you have to remove the lion battery......the last pic bottom.....right ....shine a light up it........
or check the case symbols.......look like a stack of cdrom disks....witha padlock on top.....i couldn't find that icon anywhere, but this is what the inside of that panel looks like..

...?NEXT to battery pack>http://www.laptopsolutions.plc.uk/toshiba_t1910_laptops_spares_and_schematics.htm

but re-reading your post you say the c: drive came on......try tapping the bottom of the case on boot up...sometimes old hard drive stick......download a boot floppy.....from bootdisks.comThat is the PCMCIA slot (PC card slot). Megahertz PC card is either a modem or network card. It appears to have only 1 slot. There should be a release button for it, but I can't see it, for sure. It could be below the screw on the left. One push releases it into the activate position, 2nd hard push should release the Megahertz card.

Battery is probably dead, don't worry about it. Since screen is dead, you have a more serious problem.

BTW, I have worked on many different laptops. Found a link with a picture and specs:
http://www.geocities.com/dueze/toshiba-t1910.html
SPECIFICATIONS:
CPU: 486 sx 33
RAM: 8 Mb
HD: 124 Mb
I estimate it was made in 1994, and it was:

http://www.michaelminn.com/?linux/notebooks/toshiba1910.html

BTW, I still have an old 486 myself (not Toshiba) with both Win3.1 and Win95. Hope you didn't pay too much for the Toshiba?well.. i mentioned i tried a DOS 5.0 bootdisc, but no result.. Could you maybe recommend to me another one i should try? (i'm scared to just try random ones and see if they work) The two guides from the last post both seem to deal with installing Linux on the t1910, but to accomplish that i would seem to have to replace the NOTEBOOK's memory and hardrive just to make a system capable enough. really i would be happy with just a DOS OS.. i don't really need anything visual necessarily. if i could just get it to *start*...
should i try to take out the network card? (i dont think that would get me anywhere..) what kind of hardware problem do you think this could be, if it is one? (i'm prepared to replace parts, within reason...)

Edit: Not really. $20 =)http://www.freeos.com/download.php?PHPSESSID=4351b51e2e95e5cb6218b21f083d5979

Edit: Not really. $20 =)

I was only trying to see if it does come out, no it won't get you anywhere. Parts for a notebook that old are not available. Even if they were, it would not be within reason ($100's).

If nothing shows at all on the screen...the video card is dead or the screen is dead. Bootdisk makes no difference. Sell it at your next garge sale.
You could hook the laptop up to a pc monitor to test cc theory.......or maybe the liitle wheel on the side of the lcd screen has been turned down......This thread is rather exciting to follow. PLEASE do add more pictures, they add to the atmosphere of the story. i tried playing with the wheel on the side of the screen. no luck =(

So i disconnected my PC monitor from my computer and tried plugging it into the laptop.
Back of notebook:

BUT sadly my monitor behaved as if there were no signal (white screen). I think maybe one of two things may have happened-
1. The monitor is too new for the computer? my monitor is a Viewsonic A70. though i would think it wouldn't matter?

2. There's a problem with the video card.. which would be bad. but once source told me that it's capable of supporting 256k video ram, which i can buy here --> http://www.futurlec.com/ICRAM.shtml although i would look for it locally first. the only slightly hard part would be installing it

unless the problem is something else entirely... lol

so tomorrow i am going to try hooking up my computer to the laptop monitor and see of that at least works... so that way i can confirm that the screen is INDEED not the problem before i go out and buy anything.Perhaps the people once dropped the laptop and broke the mainboard or damaged the processor beyond repair. Can you not break it open to see what is wrong?

I have a new DVD that a company made for me during my white WATER RAFTING vacation. I can play it with no troubles in my notebook, but when I put it in my DVD player (about a year old, with progressive scan) to watch it on T.V. it starts to play and 10 minutes into it, it continues to kinda skip. Weird.

...and no, it's not wet lolAny SMUDGES? Scratches? Dust? Clean the CD with some solution, and try cleaning the lens on the DVD player as well... Not as hard as many may think... If you go to a computer store, or electronics store, you will see a kit. It will have a CD which has little brushes on it, which will clean your lens... See if this helps..

I recently bought a hard drive from a garage sale. Just 3 gigs, im using it on my only 6x86. The drive was all crapped up, so I went into delpart deleted the 3 partitions that were on it. I went into fdisk, and created a new partition. I unplugged my other hard drive, and changed rthe 3 GIG one to master, but when it booted, I got, Press Any Key To REBOOT, even when a BOOT disk was in. I finally realized that i needed to set the partition I just made to active, so I plugged my other hard drive back in, went into FDISK, and attempted to make it active, but it said only partitions on drive 1 can be set to active. How can I make it work?! Boot disks dont work for some reason, and I cant make it active if its on drive 2... any ideas?!

Thanks in Advance
JamieOnly 1 partition can be "active" at one time in one computer, whether 1 hard drive or 2 hard drives.I want to change the 3 gig drive to my master drive, it will be the only drive in my MACHINE. When I plug it in by itself tho, the machine refuses to boot, even when i put a boot disk in. I never get the chance to set it to an active partition unless i have both hard drives plugged in.Ok you could do this disconnect the slave cdrom drive ....or switch the master jumper to save......attach the 3 gig....and format it the pc will see it as d.....drive>>.....win98 will take approx 768 mb.....or if it storage i would invest in a bigger drive.....

Footnote: if you are using winxp.......use the disk management.../control~ panel~admin~tools.....You need to set your bios to boot to whatever disk your putting in first.
A: or cdrom.I set the 3 gig to master, and plopped in a Windows 98 boot disk I DOWNLOADED. I set Boot Drive to A, but when it was starting up I noticed my 5 1/2" Floppy's light was going on. Went into BIOS turned Swap Floppy on, and the boot disk kicked in. Lame swap floppy... started this whole mess. Drive is up and running, installing 98SE as we speak.Good.. ....i would skin the drive......dump the junk to gain more space.....like 3.1mb of themes.....if you wish you could go into the control panel add/remove.....click windows setup.....and see if you need any of the programs listed in there!Ah okay will do thanks for all the help No PROBLEMS>> we are happy to help. .....thanks for the feed back....
