Solve : What's My AGP Bus Speed??

Answer»

Can anyone tell me how I go about DETERMINING what my motherboard's AGP bus speed is?  (eg. 2X, 4X, 8x)Yes look in you Motherboard Manual. Or search the make and model number of your Motherboard over the net. Thanks, Frank. That worked. I had assumed Control Panel or dxDiag would've provided this info, but no such luck.

Solve : Laptop crashes frequently while idle?

Answer»

I've been looking all over the internet, but cannot find help with my problem. I'm not sure I'm posting in the right forum, either. I don't KNOW if my problem is hardware or software related... I suspect hardware...

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 series running windows XP nad it seems to crash after sitting idle for a period of time. The hard drive starts to read really slowly (making a repeditive "tick tick tick" noise) and the system becomes incredibly slow.
After a while it freezes completely. If left for much longer, a blue screen of death appears with something like "KERNEL_STACK_ERROR" or "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR" (it changes) and it says "Beginning dump of physical memory". Then, after a while, the screen GOES to black and I get a single message: "Please insert system disk to continue"
(By the way, I tried INSERTING a boot disk at this point, but it didn't recognize it)
Once the computer actually restarted and told me "Windows has recovered from a serious error", but as I was not connected to the internet, i COULD not send the REPORT to microsoft. However I do have the "manifest.txt" and "sysdata.xml" which I believe are related to logging this error, as well some ".dmp" files (which I assume are the "dump of physical memory" files) and I can send them if you want more info.

It's not just while it's idle, either. When it started, I tried a system restore, but when i tried to create a restore point (in case i didn't like the restore) it started reading slowly (with the "click click click" noise).
And it happened today halfway through trying to install Borland c++ builder 6.

I have a theory that the hard drive may have some badly place bad sectors, but when I tried to use the chkdsk utility to find them, it just said "Checking for errors" and then finished without actually doing anything. I know from past experience that these scans take forever.

I hope someone can figure out what it wrong and help me to fix it...
If you need more info, just ask.

Thanks.I had the same problem with my toshiba.  Had to send it in and mine was a powersupply problem.  It dont dump physical memory but it still clicks and im wondering about that also.  I seem to have an overheating problem also.

Solve : Fan Auto-Shutdown?

Answer»

I was on the pre-boot SETUP screen and was checking my fan settings and switched to Auto Shutdown Computer when Fan Fails and now when I turn my computer on it immediately turns off.  My computer was working fine before I accidently switched this value.  I have no boot disk and am WONDERING what my options are?  Try:

Locate replacement fans. Open case. remove fans. replace with replacement fans. close case. turn on computer.Fish.....Well , I would try the obvious..... go into the pre-boot setup screen and disable the auto SHUT down function.........   Now I guess the next logical QUESTION is ........... Are the fans working ok ?

Solve : Mouse Initialization failure!?

Answer»

Hi,
Please if anyone has idea what should I do with th error messsage at every start up says:
PS2 Mouse initialization failure!
and wants me to press any key to continue.
I happened after I changed my mouse connection to USB human interface device connection.
Thanks all.
ps:new mouse works without problem.Go into device manager. Look under mouse. Select ps2 mouse and click remove. Quote

Go into device manager. Look under mouse. Select ps2 mouse and click remove.

It's not in list when USB connected and when both mouses are connected disable is not available for ps2.And I unistalled PS2 also but still the same problem remains.
There are options in Setup for keyboard and other errors but for mouse it's not available.
tnx.Try enabling USB Mouse and/or keyboard support in the BIOS.

Or you can:

1. Remove the PS/2 mouse entry in the device manager whilst the PS/2 mouse is connected.
2. Shut down system (Not restart)
3. Connect USB mouse
4. Allow for detection.Again thnx Raptor
I had tried the SECOND way you suggested and got no result.
And checked for USB enabling and it is enabled.
I think I need sth to prevent detection of PS2 mouse port as I no longer use this port for mouse connection.
but system checks it at startup.
Second, can disabling of IRQ #12 which uses PS2  mouse can help me?
If can then how can I disable it?
Thanks.Try the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Mouse
5. HARDWARE tab
6. Select the mouse that causes problems
7. Click properties
8. Configure it.Go to the bios setup screen and chose setup defaults......save and exit... Quote

Thanks Raptor.
But on garphical interface mouse doesn't cause any problem. At startu system checks  PS2 mouse port and because there's no mouse connected halts on and asks to press any key for continuing.
Connecting  USb and PS2 mouses I can use  both of them at the same time and at startup no error message  appears.
What is reporting the ps2 error, Windows or bios?BiOS at the very startup.Go in bios & search every screen.
There will be somewhere in there to STOP it.I tried tens of screens, disabled, enabled a lot of familiar things but still got no use.
I have to press any key to continue every stratup.
Has anyone idea how to disable PS2 mouse port?
Could your bios battery be flat THUS reverting the bios back to it's default settings?
Are you saving your bios changes correctly, sometimes bios can be a bit tricky if you're not used to it.
Enter to exit etc.
You got any sneaky settings like 'wakeup / ps2 mouse'?No I can make changes in other areas and they affect. eg first boot device, clock etc. when I change configuratin they work as I want.
generally I see nothing about PS2 or mouse in my bios settings.
I have not yet meet anything that hints  mouse or PS2 configuration.

Solve : my printer wont print?

Answer»

???hi i'm USING a canon i350 printer, i have just PUT in new ink catridges and STILL it refuses to print.
there are no error messages instead just yellow spots all over the page.

thank you for your assistance.
jappie Try printing a print test sheet. If you still see the spots on the paper, it probably means your CARTRIDGES are either not the right one or aren't placed CORRECTLY.

Does your printer require you to "tell it" your replacing the ink cartridges?

Hope it helps.Try and see if it will align the cartridges... Usually happens when you print a test page, but sometime you have to tell it to do some things...

Solve : Long beeps?

Answer»

Hello. Need help on this one. Recently turned on my PIII 600mhz pc after more than a week of non-use and, instead of booting, HEARD long beeps instead. So, I opened the unit, detached the detachables one by one until I was able to isolate it to a defective SDRAM. After REPLACING it with a working ram, the pc got stuck at POST. However, after powering-off and rebooting after waiting for a few secs, the PC BOOTED up properly. Here's the thing. Powering it up the next round, the long beeps are back again. What's happening? How may long beeps what bios is it. Is the keyboard pushed in and working ok.Continuous, single long beeps. BIOS is Award. Don't know what version it is.  Keyboard is ok.Id say it was Ram. Have you made sure there is no dust around the slots and the Ram is seated properly. Is this a new stick of Ram and of the same type as your other Ram. Can you try another Ram slot. May be worth setting Bios to default settings after you have INSTALLED some other Ram.I did reset the BIOS to defaults. But didnot check for dust nor reseat to another ram slot. Will try this when I get home. Thanks for the ADVISE.

Solve : pci graphics card for my motherboard??

Answer»

really don't know too much about these types of THINGS...maybe someone can help...

I want to get this videocard:

Overclocked GEFORCE 7800 GTX Video Card (256MB, PCI-Express x16, Dual DVI, VIVO)

and I have this motherboard:

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/E7505/X5DAE.cfm

Will they work together?

any help will do?

thanks

matthelm!I am not familiar with PCI-Express, but it looks like the mainboard should be compatible.

• 2x 32-bit 33MHz PCI-X (5V) slots

May I ask why you want a dual processor BOARD?thanks!  Is there anyone else that knows a bit more aobut PCI-Express that could help me with this?

Thanks in advance,

mh88According to the specs of the board, it may be too fast for your board. The smallest pci-x slot is x32 and 2 x64 and thet card is x16. The board meybe backward compatable but I would buy a faster videocard as to take full advantage of the board like this one
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1212069&CatId=0

hope this helpsSo is this true?  My motherboard is too fast for the videocard?  I do not see the Nvidia 7800 offerred other than the pci x16...can anyone help me out on FIGURING if this "x16" would work on my motherboard?

Thanks

mh88All I can say is to call the mobo maker and ask them, it may be backward compatable and run at x16 on one of the x32 slots. Or you can just try it out. What in the world are you building anyways?? That is one heck of a board! The card you have is recommended with this board    Gigabyte K8NXP-SLI
This board is equipped with the x16 pci-x card as well as the x1 pci-x and standard pci slot. Hopefully they will be of some help to you, wish I could help you more but I have never seen such a beefy mobo before.

Solve : Cant Boot Up = *censored*.?

Answer»

HELP!!! yesterday my computer was still working fine. then today when I turned it on, it resets itself in a few seconds. i cant get it to boot up. I know theres nothing wrong with connections cuz its always been working fine. I go to BIOS and i found that my Maxtor harddrive has a weird name, SOMETHING like " Maxtorv687v8''''''''''''' "(not the exact thing) I cant remember what it used to be but I dont think its that. my primary master is a western digital ATA100 200G HD and my primary slave is Maxtor ATA 133 60G and my secondary stuff are a DVD rom and a CDRW.

then I realized that the only way to boot up, is to disconnect eveyrthing, including my disk drives, except the western digital HD (which has winXP installed) and set it as a secondary drive, then it will boot up. its weird. now I am doing that and that means I cant use my Maxtor HD, my cdrw, and my DVD.

*CENSORED*.Try resetting the BIOS to the default values.

You MIGHT also want to download diagnostic software to test your Hard Disk Drive.Try a different ide cable for the harddrives. Were the optical drives working properly? Try the optical drive cable on the harddrives and see if it will now recognize them. Sometimes when the cable goes bad it cannot read the disc so it gives it a generic name to try to load it.ya right now I am connecting my optical drive cable to my HD, and everything else is disconnected, the HD is now a secondary drive and I can boot up. but as long as I connect any optical drive or the otehr HD, it cant boot up. *censored*.How are the jumpers set? Cable select or pri and slave? If not try setting them as such and make sure you PUT them on the correct cable locations. Let us know how you have them set and the specs of your machineI may have read wrong but are you saying that nothing is working while connected to IDE Master and Master slave, if so have you tried just for testing purposes that the IDE is ok, try to install windows on the maxtor while its hooked up as master.the jumpers are cable select I believe.thing is, my comp has always been working, until yesterday, I dont udnerstand. Can you start in safe mode? F8So many name changes it hard to reply?someone told me my mobo could have been busted, but if thats the case why is it able to boot with one secondary drive. and I dont understand why my mobo should be busted. this sux...any ideas?  If you have tried resetting the Bios and CHANGED the IDE Cable. The only thing i belive you can do now, is try to install windows on the maxtor Drive this will tell you if the Motherboard or the IDE Slot on the Motherboard is Faulty..umm..but  my computer wont even start. how do I install windows on the HD. besides,  i will have to format it in order to do so....

oh great, now its worse. it doesnt reset anymore but it doesnt boot either, and theres nothing on the screen for some reason. I cannot do anything now.

Solve : dies on bootup - and more?

Answer»

I have a 3.2 ghz machine that I bought just over a year ago, of course a 1 year warrenty. A few weeks ago a series of problems began poping up.
The FIRST problem was after a few seconds after turning the power on my system would die. In other words it would start to boot correctly but then crap out.  Usually after a dozen or more times of this it would finally boot up ok.
To try and diagnose the problem I opened the case up and systematically began disconnecting hardware components. So first the floppy drive, but still died. Then the DVD drive, but still died. Then the harddrive, and it booted ok!! So i connected everything back up but the harddrive and it booted ok repeatedly. So I thought it was the harddrive. But at the same time I thought maybe it wasn't. You see if I can get the SUCKER to boot, I can use it for days, with all kind of intense harddrive access and it will never fail. So just to make sure I thought I would do a little more testing. So after my usual dozen times of getting it to boot up with the harddrive connected I starting trying to access other pieces of hardware that I rarely use. So I stuck a floppy into the floppy drive and tried doing some reading and writing, but everything seemed ok. Then I tried reading and writing from the dvd drive. And to my amazement even accessing the dvd drive caused my system to crash. And not only once, but several times, and everytime. So then I thought it has to be the dvd drive. But as I said before if I totally disconnect the dvd drive with the harddrive still connected it will ALWAYS fail.
So to make a long STORY evey longer, I am running around in circles trying to find this problem. I am guessing it might be the power supply. But the fact that the piece of crap will work for days if I don't touch the dvd drive makes me think otherwise.
Can anyone help me here? Or point me to a website that has a flow diagram of how to diagnose hardware problems?
Thanks a lot - Dondid you try replacing the connecting cables that connect the devices to the motherboard? Quote

...So i connected everything back up but the harddrive and it booted ok repeatedly....

Please explain.  How can it boot with hard drive disconnected?  Do you mean it is booting to CD and/or floppy drive?

You might indeed want to check the IDE cables. Have you tried testing the hardware, that seems faulty, in another computer?

Quote
Please explain.  How can it boot with hard drive disconnected?  Do you mean it is booting to CD and/or floppy drive?

He most likely means the POST.  Replace the connecting cables? Hmmm, why would the connecting gables be the problem when the problem seems to be device independent? Like sometimes its the harddrive and sometimes its the dvd drive.  Seems a bad connecting cable would be specific to one device. But maybe I am not understanding which cables you're refering to. Which is probably the case but perhaps you could clarify. Thanks.See Raptor's post, read it carefully, then TAKE his advice!! then report back.Set the bios to defaults..........

Solve : Everest or physical identification ??

Answer»

I recently SWITCH from win98SE to XP, and suddenly my soundcard is not detected.

I opened CPU box, unplug the card, and there's 2 chipset (MAYBE) :

1) YMF 724G-V
    9948 GBFF

2) Avance Logic Inc
   ALC 100P
   0631501 0247F

I tried to download both driver, but doesn't work. Then I use Everest from Lavalys, under multimedia it read:

ForteMedia FM801 Audio Controller

Now I'm confused. Which driver should I use ? Also, when I try to search, there is driver with WDM, another with Legacy, yet other driver simply listed "PCI audio driver".

That happens, to YMF, Avance, and Fortemedia. Anyone can tell me what it means ? And what driver I should use ?

Thanks in advance

p.s : I've tried searching, I REALLY do  Try the windows legacy & pci ones. Thanks Fed. But which one ?

YMF Legacy/PCI ?
Avance Legacy/PCI ?
Fortemedia Legacy/PCI ?

And what is "WDM", if anyone care to explain ?

Solve : recovering deleted files?

Answer»

hello, I don't know much about the HARD drive so please help me out.

Ok, what i want to do is recover a game that has been deleted from the computer. Now, i am told that the computer doesn't ever permantely delete anything, it just DELETES the route to the program. The game was deleted a few months back, and my little brother can;t FIND the CD to install it, but once installed, the game will run without the CD.

So is there any possiable way i can undig the game from my computer? Easily?

Thank you so much.  Hope all that made since. There is a very high chance of you having overwritten most of the SECTORS that the data was stored on, resulting in FILES being overwritten even though Windows no longer sees them.

If you want to experiment with file recovery, try the following tool:

Restoration

The chances of you recovering an entire program are practically non-existant. Not to mention that registry entries may have been removed as well. What game was it?Thanks, i will try the restoration program.

The game was Dogz 5... I'm not familiar with it, but i did see him play it a few times...

Thanks for the help.

For EXAMPLE, if you are using NOTEPAD for printing and during printing, your printer prints nonsence, then do print same thing in some differnt software like Microsoft Word, Wordpad or anyother word processing software. On the other hand if you tryiing to print any picture then do the same thing.

I dont understand. How is it along beep if you say it lasted about a second or two. A second would mean a short beep. I think you need to describe the beeps abit better before someone can say what it is. For now though id see if the Ram thing did any good.ok my mistake the beep is about 8 SECONDS long and i moved the ram stick around the beep still continude and then i tried with a diff stick and it still continude to mke the long beepYou still havnt said what Bios you have. Did you get an Error message on screen or is your screen blank. The beep can mean diffrent things for diffrent Bios. If its an AMI Bios one long beep means it has passed the post and is ok. Or if its one of the Bios i have mentioned in the second post above, it can mean a problem.  Did you do anthing to the computer just before this happened. Get back to me about what Bios you have and if its not an AMI Bios In the mean time  try this. Disconnect everything from the back of your computer even the monitor so that there is just the power cable connected. Now boot the computer up and tell me what beep or beeps you hear and if they are short or long. While doing this MAKE sure all the fans in the computer are running including the power supply unit fan, Heatsink fan.Need more info on this pc to help you!

Sounds like you need a UPS. Drop-outs in the power line will cause this. Very short drop-outs of 8-10 microseconds would be relatively unnoticed by the PC but some other electronics are more sensitive. Quote

Heavy demand on the power grid, things such as air conditioners or other major appliances kicking on, among others. A power stip does not compensate for drop-outs, a surge protector only protects from high surges. A regulated power supply such as provided by an UPS will compensate for both. When there is a surge, it will regulate the voltage to its designed output. When there is a drop-out, the batteries will kick in to maintain the proper voltage. Quote

Hi...I'm fonzbear2000's dad....sorry if he didn't articulate the problem clearly enough. Thanks for your suggestion. We should have a USB anyway, so I will GET one and see if it helps. It has been really hot here lately and power consumption has indeed been high. The DSL modem resetting itself over and over has been frustrating! We just switched from Comcast CABLE internet as a cost saving measure and were excited to try Qwest DSL for half the price. But this intermittent modem problem has been disappointing to say the least. It will go sometimes for 12 hours or more without a problem, then suddenly start shutting down and resetting for anywhere from 6 to 12 times before "settling down" again. Dozens of calls to Qwest were no help. They suggested our house phone wiring might be bad. We thought the router might be a culprit (it's an old discontinued model) but the problem occurs even when the DSL connection is directly in the computer, so that can't be it. We are running out of ideas so maybe your UPS suggestion will do the trick. Thanks to all who have tried to help. We'll LET you know what happens. Thanks again!

You should be careful not to overload a wall socket. Be certain they are grounded.

Solve : Device Mananger error codes for PB Club 2460?

Answer»

I have three exclamanation points in my Device Manager that I do not understand. Could someone HELP me find out what must be corrected and how?

It concerns a Club 2460 Packard Bell with Windows 98SE (USER installation, not FACTORY default)

(These items are translated)

    [*] Systemcardexpansion for P and P BIOS (Code 15)
    [*]PCI Card (code 28)
[*]USB Hoot Rub (Has been disabeled due to some sort of request being denied)
    [/list]

The first, I do not understand.

The second; there is only a Network card which functions properly and was auto-detected/installer. There is a low-profile (?) modem which I have installed drivers for. (The only drivers available on the PB website for this computer). It is not PCI, it has a very small slot which is unknown to me.

The two USB connectors both seem to function, as they detect my USB Travelstar and tell me new hardware has been found. I have not tried to transfer any data, as I would first NEED to install drivers.check your settings in system, device manager, hardware  , usb root hub power control is usually set to switch off if no actions detected, un tick the box to stop the compuer switching it off Quote

I just noticed that part of the USB controller is detected and functioning (I reformated) even though I did not install the drivers.

and the other part is detected, but not installed. could this be because mainboard has the capability to house two more USB connectors but does not have them installed? (I can not open the case to verify this as it is jammed shut)

Even after reformating, the P and P BIOS entry is still showing the same error. The PCI Card is there again as well.

    Solve : Dead mobo/cpu/both??

    Answer»

(I've searched the boards for this and found several similar posts, but none close enough for me to be sure they're the same, so I'll beg your indulgence)
A couple of weeks ago, my 3 year old home PC just QUIT in the middle of the day. My wife said it flashed a message - something about the floppy drive, then just went blank.
Cut to the end of the story (I'm trying to balance giving all the info & testing I've done vs. overload):
When I press the power button, the box goes on, all fans (case, power supply, & CPU) go on. The monitor does not display anything - the power light stays amber (it's on, but not receiving a signal).
The keyboard lights - all 3 of them - go on, and stay on.
There are no beeps, at all.
When the hard drive is connected, I can hear it spinning up - sounds normal.
(all of the below changes have been made both individually & together with each other)
I've tried disconnecting all peripherals, including all drives. By "disconnecting" I mean I removed the cables from the motherboard and the power cables from the drives.
I've tried replacing the power supply.
I've tried replacing the AGP Video card with a new PCI video card.
I've tried replacing the CPU (old one was a Celeron 1.7Ghz, new one is a P4 1.8Ghz).
This change actually made a small difference - before the change, when I held the power button to turn off the power, nothing happened - the power stayed on, and I had to flip the power supply's switch.
With the new CPU, holding in the power button for 5 seconds does turn the unit off.
I tried the old CPU in a new motherboard, and the new unit didn't even power on (well, it did, but very briefly).
I tried with no RAM chips in, and 1 at a time (of the original 2). And I tried them in different slots.

Is there anything else I can try?
The conclusion I have to reach is that the CPU & motherboard died at the same time - what are the odds? (that's not a rhetorical question - is there a good chance that happened?)
But I don't consider myself a hardware expert, so I'm wide open to additional thoughts and suggestions.

    TIA.
PS - This is the first place I'm posting this and I'll try not to cross-post much, but it's possible I'll post one or 2 other places - thanks again for your indulgence.Try the following first:

To reset the BIOS, take the following steps:

    1. Power down computer
    2. Take countermeasures against electro-static discharge
    3. Remove computer casing

Do not power on the system when CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when CMOS battery is non-present.

If that does not work, and you have literally replaced or tested every hardware component that is installed, then I would take out the mainboard and inspect it for burn marks or other types of damage.Raptor,
    Thanks for the reply.
    I forgot to mention those:
I replaced the mobo battery with a new one.
And I found the CMOS reset jumper & moved it to the other position, then moved it back. I'm not sure I reset it for long enough, though.
    I'll try that one again.

    Thanks again. Quote

All about the CPU is here:
    http://www.intel.com/design/pentium4/datashts/249887.htm

I believe your CPU operates at a core voltage of 1.7V. Power supply provides +3.3, +5, +12.  Voltage regulator on motherboard makes 1.7 from one or all of the three.

    Intel says:
"...If the processor socket is empty, or the voltage regulation circuit cannot supply the voltage that is requested, it must disable itself..."

Was the replacement power supply equivalent to the original and did you insure to connect the 4-pin 12V molex connector (required for P4 operation)?

Did you try new CPU in new motherboard? Quote

Again - I'm not hearing any beeps, and I'm not seeing any video, so I have to conclude that it's not getting to the POST. Quote

That's tonight's project. New CPU(s - I BOUGHT 2 - 1 to replace the old one, one for the new motherboard) in new mobo, and the rest of the construction.
On the off chance I damaged the new CPU (and how much would that suck!) can I damage the new mobo by plugging in the new (& damaged) P4? Because this is getting ridiculous!

    Frankie,
    Thanks for the reply.
I guess that's possible, but I have 2 memory sticks in there, and tried them each individually, in different slots.

At this point, I *know* the (original, Celeron) processor is bad. I've got the new processors (but not both at the same time) working in the new motherboard ( - at least that!), and when I put the celeron in the new mobo, it acts as though there's no CPU there - it powers on very briefly, then shuts down.

Now I just need to determine (for sure) that the old mobo is bad, or could there be something else - yes, like RAM - causing it to not boot, even with the new processor.

Thanks again.I know you say you have got 2 sticks of Ram that you have tried, but if you have another spare one about i would try that one. This is SOMTHING that happened to me.

Have you tried the Ram in another computer. I would also make sure there is no dust in the Ram slots, give it a blow out and make sure the Ram is seated right.

The only other thing i can think of is if it doesnt post (make sure you have the speaker connected to hear the beep). Is to disconnect all peripherals and system adaptor cards in the unit, except for the keyboard and monitor and see if it posts. If it doesnt post after doing all this. I would say there is a fault with your motherboard.

Okay, so apparently I need a little advice here. Inherited a DVD-ROM drive today (PANASONIC Matshia SR-8586), brand new but naked - no documentation, CD's or anything else.

Solve : Corrupt graphics after flashing DVD-R/W?

    Answer»

    Hi everyone,

    Let me DESCRIBE my problem:
In order to turn my NEC ND-1100A CD/DVD-RW into its successor ND-1300A, I UPDATED its firmware. I did this using a flashing tool and firmware that was successfully used by many other people specifically for this purpose. Everything went smoothly, or so it seemed. However, this is what I had to see when I booted:

Surprisingly, it’s apparently not a problem concerning the ND-1100A. The drive was successfully turned into a ND-1300A and it seemed to work. Flashing it back to a ND-1100A didn’t solve the problem, nor could I notice a difference after disconnecting the drive. The power device is okay, all voltages stable and within the limits. Motherboard and CPU temperature normal.

Interestingly, when I unplug the power device for a short time and then reboot, at least the boot screens seem to be okay. However, the vertical stripes reappear soon after. FIRST I usually see yellow stripes. They disappear after a while: when I notice that new objects like ICONS or windows suddenly overwrite the stripes, I just have to force a redraw of the whole screen (e.g. by maximizing a window) and everything is back to normal. Hours later, however, the stripes return as pink stripes that don’t go away. Usually these “pink stripes” persist on reboot, unless I unplug the power device as described above.

Unfortunately this is probably a problem that can only be solved by replacing hardware, but I wonder what hardware -- the motherboard, the graphics card? The motherboard’s BIOS should be okay (reflashed it with newest version).

    Configuration:
    - Processor: Intel Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz
    - Motherboard: ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
    - Grahphics card: ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
    - OS: Win XP/SP 2

Thanks in advance for your help/advice!Since when do you flash DVD-ROM drives?Disconnect the drive...........does it look normal......if this is so......the flash drive has had it!....unless you use a net search ENGINE for .....re-flash.........firmware....

I am not quite certain what refurbished articles are. I saw a refurbished X800 for sale at http://www.ati.com for $ 199. That is less than the 9800Pro costs, even though it is more powerful. There must be something wrong.

I think they are articles that people return when they are broken, the company fixes them but can't resell them as new. "Refurbished" can mean anything.  US law requires opened box merchandise to be advertised as something other than new.

Would you BUY it at near retail?  $1600 is a lot for any HP notebook, new or refurbished.  90-day warranty isn't much.  It's your money to waste as you wish.

Any suggestions?klthyges.....Have you tried using the controls on the monitor itself to increase your screen size ?

I was refering to videocard drivers. But you should install monitor drivers as well, if you can locate these and if Windows does not auto install them.when I switched monitors, the black border was there again, but smaller.  When I use this second monitor on my other computer, there is no border at all.

I have windows 98.  The original monitor was working fine until a few days ago. Nothing changed in terms of the drivers....

And I just developed a new problem!  When I try to set a new resolution, the screen goes totally black.  I had to RESTART in safe MODE and restore defaults.  This pushed some of my desktop icons half off the page...  HELP.one last thing... it seems that something has changed in my internet settings - they went back to default from years ago.  how do I get back my most recent connections? (e.g., when I click on internet explorer it PROMPTS me for dial up, but I have cable. and the cable SETTING is now erased completely)You might be using resolutions that the monitor does not support.

When a monitor its resolution has been changed, it is possible that you have to use the monitor controls to re-adjust the screen and eliminate the black border. What operating system is used>>make model of pc/and monitor.......

Are you certain that the beep is supposed to be there? Has it always done that? Is it a repeating beep? What BIOS is used?Hi

Yesterday all Pc's were working and on-line. I exchanged the PINK monitor for the 15".

That is when the desktop icons were huge. I changed the resolution and then the lines came and that Pc hasn't re-booted successfully since.

Solve : Power supply starts, then immediately stops?

    Answer»

The computer has recently been moved. Before the move it worked. Nothing dramatic happened during the move.

When I press the start button, the light comes on. The power supply fan starts and the CPU cooling fan starts. Then after at most 3 seconds, the power supply shuts down (both fans stop). But the start button light remains on.

I took out the power supply and tried it on another motherboard (without any other loads). It seemed to work fine. It wasn't connected to any drives, etc.

After putting the power supply back in, I bypassed the start switch on the computer by just shorting the terminals on the MOBO. Same RESULTS. I checked the CPU to make sure it was seated correctly and as best I can see, it looks OK. I unplugged the power from all the drives etc. Same failure.

I also took out the CMOS battery for 10 minutes, then put it back in. Again no help.

As best I can figure, the motherboard is telling the Power Supply to cut off.  Any ideas what other tests I could do to tell what's happening? Do these steps:
TAKE all your parts except the motherboard out.  Switch all the parts with those of another computer. If it does the same thing with the other set of parts, it is a motherboard issue. If the power supply fails to work on the other machine, switch the hardware back--one device at a time, trying the computer after each device. BTW--make sure computer is unplugged BEFORE REMOVING hardware, then plugged IN before testing. This is an interesting article.

I'm not sure that trying it in another computer proves that it's OK. If you tried a different one in the offending computer?I will try a different power supply before I go for a new motherboard. I'll have to rip one out of another box. No spare! It's worth a shot. Before you go out and buy new parts - since you will be dismantling the thing anyway - check to see if one of the MB standoffs has become dislodged. This can cause a short and immediate shutdown. Also check to see if the heatsink is making proper contact with the processor. Even if the processor is well seated, if there is not good contact between it and the heatsink it too will cause immediate shutdown due to overheating. These are the most common causes of your problem. Is this a self-build pc!No, not self built. emachines. mobo had it!dude i think you've got to buy a new power supplyUpdate: I just pulled a working power supply and connected it to the offending machine. Same results.

I'm feeling pretty confident that the MotherBoard is shot. Now, how the heck did that happen?!!!!  Something loose in the case fell on to the mobo maybe!

Visually inspect the board for .....for tracking burning, capasitors learning over!! did his board have an amd cpu!

Recking wiring plug banks! on the board!and all ramsticks/graphics card:

Before comdeming the board! This Happend to my computer once, It turned out to be the heat sink and fan. Like yours my computer would boot up for 3 seconds. Fans spun round, then it would just shutdown. I replaced heat sink and fan and it worked fine after that. Im not SAYING this will definatley work for you, but it just sounds the same as happened to my computer. Let USE know what it was when you fix it, will be intesting to see what caused it.I told what to look for ^up there^. Apparently prefers replacing to checking. Quote

I told what to look for ^up there^. Apparently prefers replacing to checking.

Some people just never learn to scroll up, aye.  :-/It sounds like that the fan is not working or the clips holding the heat sink on have come lose this happened to me today checked the heatsink clips and one was not clamp down properley,  push it down until it click into place,  and no more trouble computer working fine. Or the fan maynot be running fully the bearings do wear out after a while if that's the case just replace the fan, If you can. If not buy a new heatsink.

Solve : SATA vs. SATA II?

    Answer»

does SATA II require a different interface to normal SATA? I have machines with SATA drives in them and am replacing drives with sata II drives.

I can GET SATA II as long as  it is backwards compatible with normal SATA motherboard connectors and does not require any special PCI card adapter.

I'm new to SATA II. I have a AMD 3000fx motherboard.. no idea the specs but its a year old and WORKS with SATA. Any info welcome. Cheersi beleive SATA II drives are backwards compatible with SATA150 connections. however, they will run at SATA speeds of course.Odd. Overclockers.co.uk tech support said SATA II is not compatible with old sata connections.

My techie friends says he thinks they are.

It's crazy that no one seems to know yet there are thousands of sata II drives on sale all over the web. CRAZY! I mean REALLY!!! I have asked 5 separate geek sites, put questions up on numerous forums, asked all my geek friends.

DOES anyone know for sure?! 49% say sata II works with SATA connections.  49% say it doesn't work at all and you need a pci card or sata II motherboard. And then there's a few 2% SAYING it will work but only at SATA 150 speeds.

If anyone has FIRST HAND experience, please do comment and let us all in on this apparently elusive secret

Excuse my abruptness- it just seems like an obvious question to me that everyone buying a new HD should be asking. It's hardly specialist, and not pedantic.

Solve : Unable to enable Primary IDE Channel?

    Answer»

    Hi,

I have had a problem with my dvd drives. I have a DVD Burner and a DVD Reader, and my problem is the following. The first CD or DVD that I put in the computer after it has booted will be kept in the drive memory as long as I don't reboot, so I can only get access to one CD or DVD by boot, one in each drive. When I REMOVE the disc and put another one, the icon (in My Computer) stays the same as the cd I have just removed and worst, I can explore the cd and find the same files and folders from the previous disc, but this does not happen all the time. I went in my Device Manager to try to find an explanation and all I could find is that my Primary IDE Channel cannot be enabled. It is not marked as disabled, I cannot even select an option, the box under Device Usage is gray and there is nothing written in it. I made sure that all of the wires are well plugged and that all of my drivers are up to date. This problem occured with no particular reason I can remember. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

fenderdrIf you are certain the primary IDE channel is disabeled, you should enable it from the BIOS.I have tried to disable my Secondary IDE Channel and the Icon on the left (in the device manager) was then marked with a red X, which is not the case with the Primary IDE Channel, so I believe it might not be the problem since it seems to be enabled, and the IDE Drive UDMA option in the Bios is turned on and the Master and Slave are properly assigned. UDMA is not the same as the IDE channel #1.

Solve : SATA and Raid Support?

    Answer»

Hi i am buying a new PCI E motherboard that has SATA Support and Raid Support. I have one problem i dont know what these are, or what they do, could you give me any advice as to what they are and do, as an inter net search didnt help.Frankie this is a lenghty topic.  I suggest you go to http://www.webopedia.com/ and look up the terms.  It will go a long way towards explaining the terms.  Typically RAID is used on Servers and on high-end PCs.  It is method of "fault tolerance" (look it up).  SATA is a new hardware interface that offers ADVANTAGES over IDE, and older interface.  Hope this helps Quote

    1. SATA Support and
    2. Raid Support.

    1. If you are buying a Hard Disk Drive, make certain it is SATA. Doing so will yield better (performance) results. However, IDE HDDs may be cheaper and allow for easier Windows installation because they do not need seperate drivers.

    2. RAID support you will most likely not use. It would require for you to have two or more identical HDDs which will both have the same type of DATA written should one Hard Disk Drive fail. It is not likely that the average user will want to make use of this.

    Ok thanks ALOT GUYS. Quote

    Solve : Soundblaster or Trust??

    Answer»

    This concerns two good soundcards;

A Trust 512DX (Created for/with the 5.1 Surround set that I USE) and a SOUNDBLASTER Live! Digital 5.1.

The Trust 512DX is only capable of 17 channels, I am not too certain about the Soundblaster Live! Digital 5.1.

    Both are from post-2001.

What would you install? Since most soundcards seem to be COMPATIBLE with the Soundblaster standard, should I even bother using a non-Soundblaster audio card?

    On the side;

What kind of sounds should emanate from a 5.1 Surround middle speaker? It does not seem to make any sound at all, even when I disconnect all the other speakers.

The whole 5.1 idea is a bit vague to me as WELL, the front speakers are always louder and I never get the feeling that there is 'something' HAPPENING behind me. Most likely because I dance all over the screen in any sort of game, but still, aren't I supposed to feel like I'm really there?Still quite perplexed.

If the volume reaches a certain point, the left front channel becomes less dominant.
