Solve : Comp won't turn on?

Answer»

Just built it. I am getting a strange high-pitched whirring noise from the power supply when I PLUG it in, but it STILL won't power up when I hit the power button.

I disconnected the power supply to the mainboard and the high-pitched whirring stops, but still no power.

I tried using a diffeent power supply, and had the same problem. I am at a loss atm.

Solve : Old Topic?

Answer»

Last week I asked about why I couldn't write to my FDD on my lap top. I tried switchind the tab and formating the disk but to no avail.

I then a REMOVED my FDD (its removable) and connected it VIA an external cable, when i do this it works fine.

I then went to, programs>accessories>system tools>system information, and selected problem devices.

when the FDD is in it tells me that the secondary ide bus controller is not working ( I will be more specific if needed, but it means i have to SHUT down and connect the drive).

When I INSERT the cdrom drive (also removeable, goes in same slot) and to the same thing it says there are no problems.

I have tried a different FDD but it does the smae thing, any ideas?

Solve : HP cd-writer plus question?

Answer»

hi - i replaced the cd-rom drive on my dell pc with an HP cd-writer plus (not sure what model) that i bought used. it reads cd-rw's ok, but the drive spins and the light is on the whole time a cd is in the drive whether i'm actually accessing it or not - is it supposed to do that?
i didn't do anything about the driver since windows me said it didn't need one and the device was working okThat is not supposed to happen... Lets try working with drivers.. Go to the HP website, and find your drive on the website. try downloading the latest drivers for it... is this Internal or External?

[glb]Flame[/glb]hi - thanks for answering! it's an internal drive, but I don't know what model - it's not listed anywhere on the drive... grr. but it's a 8x/4x/32x drive if that helps. i've also written to the PERSON i bought it from to see if he can tell me what kind it is.No box? Also, lets try this... Go into My COMPUTER, and right-click on this drive, and click on properties. Next, click on the hardware tab... Does it show any EXTRA information on your drive there?

[glb]Flame[/glb]hi - it's not in the PC now, i took it back out.  i'll try later i guess - thanks for the help tho! Quote

but the drive spins and the light is on the whole time a cd is in the drive whether i'm actually accessing it or not - is it supposed to do that?

Check the IDE/ATA flat ribbon cable. It may be improperly connected or damaged.well, i found out its a Philips CDD4800/45 drive - I haven't had any luck finding a driver, THOUGH. The Philips SITE doesn't have it, and HP couldn't help either... so I guess its hopeless

Solve : Reinstalling windows and Raid?

Answer»

okay, so I got my NEW mobo and everything's working fine, cept found my HDD was doa, so rma'd that

In the meantime, with ONE WD Raptor 10,000 RPM Sata HDD, I installed Windows to see if every other part of my comp was fine and not dead, because they're only covered by warranty for a few more days.

But, my other HDD has come back, and I want to set up RAID 0, but what would I have to do? Reinstall windows? and how would I do that? And the drivers for the SATA HDD's (i've got an asus mobo), would I have to get the winxp64 version Nforce's, even though i'm not using the 64 version? Because i can't find SATA drivers for regular windows xp pro.

Oh, and if anyone else has an A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo, could they walk me through setting up RAID?

If your mainboard supports RAID,  it should have come a very thick manual on all RAID configurations available. It does, it even has two different ones: one for Raid supported by Nvidia, and another for Sil3114. I'm using the NVRaid one, but I read that I should update my drivers. I already updated the BIOS to some beta version 1013-002, but the only NVRaid I could find was for Windows XP x64. I was wondering if I should use this even though i'm only running Windows xp?

And the HDD's were OEM, so I don't have any manual to know what jumper settings to CHANGE and stuff.

Solve : Power Supply Motherboard?

Answer» HI

Connect the Mainboard to another power supply
Connect the power supply to another mainboard.

Ok thanks one more thing can i use an old power supply from an old computer, Old computer been 10 years old. on a computer thats 3 years old just to do your test. I know the power supply works on the old one. also the other way around the 3 year old power supply on an old main board. Quote
Ok thanks one more thing can i use an old power supply from an old computer, Old computer been 10 years old

I would recommend against it for several reasons:

  • Different form factor
  • Low wattage
  • No 12V connector
  • Passive or no PFC.

You can, however, assuming that the formfactor of the older mainboard is the same as that of the newer PSU, connect the older mainboard to the newer PSU with little or no risk.

Solve : lexmark p706?

Answer»

My printer prints ok with black ink but when printing colour, it prints the wrong colour and very faint. I am running windows xp and i am not receiving any error messages.Any chance the colour cartridge is out of ink, Michelle?checked that. ink levels are showing half full.Have you tried cleaning the nozzles and realigning? Use your Lexmark utilities for doing this.Tried all that.    Did you FILL the carts yourself/or are these a re-fill carts !! did you RUN the the test page!Typical inkjet cartridge.  Not designed to last very long, whether you use it or not.Change the settings to auto! if unsure post back!not sure.Did a test page and the black bit came out ok but the coloured parts were all wrong colour, faded and with horizontal lines.still not sure how to change settings to auto.I had the same problem with my last printer, a dinky Canon BJC series in the same category as your Lexmark. I never did solve it, because on these printers there's nothing to fix; all the parts are non-replaceable. This is a bad printer RIGHT out of the box, according to the reviews, and you may have a problem with no solution. This is a prime EXAMPLE where cheaper ends up being more EXPENSIVE, because now you may well have to replace this unit.1)      Open the Lexmark Printer Properties.
2)      Click the Document/Quality Tab.
3)      Under Document Type, click auto Only.

  • Reseat all hardware
  • Reconnect all cables
  • Test all hardware individually
  • Report any beeps you may hear and their meaning.
okay, i've got the same mobo as you and I had the exact same problem a while ago too. If you have a sound card, take it out, and plug in a speaker to the green slot (in the I/O slots) to use the onboard audio. You'll hear some lady talking, SAYING the POST tests (the things are in your manual). start with only the cpu and heatsink, then add a stick of ram, then another stick, then gpu, etc, and SEE if the messages come out.
ALSO, it might not happen to you, but my mobo wouldn't say anything after I put in the RAM, even though I had no GPU or HDD, only CPU and RAM were in. I RMA'd my mobo, and that solved the problem, but might not be the same with you.

Solve : Help Please 486 CMOS BATTERY STATE LOW,Won't Boot?

Answer»

Hi All; Ya I know 486,AMI Bios,Motherboard MB-1433/50 AEA -V V5.1 but this board ran nice, for all my better half's Dos games.
Sat for a while, now If I turn on passes memory test, beeps and display's CMOS BATTERY STATE LOW Press F1 to continue. Ok so I go into setup, set up as needed,drive,date,time,ect.F10 to save, reboot and the same thing comes up,everytime even after running, and a warm boot.
Ok,now the fun part: I have not changed anything, drives, video, ran fine a month ago..
There is no battery on this motherboard, there is a PLACE where the battery would be,but no battery, holes there, but solder filled.
No jumpers, for CMOS clear,or normall, just solder filled holes.
The only thing on this board is a TH6887A 9321 Real Time Clock????Removable.Could this be the problem?Other PEOPLE telling me no,should still be able to save CMOS even if the battery is dead?
Man is there anyway I can get around this,to boot this COMPUTER?? I know it's a 486 old board, but what fun would all this be without a challenge..
Can I maybe solder in a battery where the battery would have normally been?
What's got me is it keeps coming up onscreen CMOS BATTERY STATE LOW press F1 to continue, then goes into setup fine...I just can't save it,it reboots to the same message.........and no battery onboard, except that real time clock module....Any help.Info,IDEA''s all Welcome, and Thanks in advance. If I remember, a 486 has a battery like this:
nope sorry,no battery like that, and no connector pin's to hook it to..I went that route already. Thanks

All This board Has is  a TH-6887A 9321 Real Time Clock Module,That is supposed to have a Battery inside it??

Just want to know if there is a way around it,so I can boot this computer.ThanksSolder pins into the holes and then connect a battery.  With power off, measure the voltage at at the pins.  Normally, should be either 3.0VDC or 4.5VDC.  Do some research on the TH6887A 9321 Real Time Clock to see what the battery voltage was when new, then get a battery to do the job.

This may not work, so you would have to replace the RTC with one of these:

http://pdfserv.maxim-ic.com/en/ds/DS12885.pdfok,Thankyou.Will try to find a used one,if possible.
ThanksRTC is less than $2 in qty.  Single UNIT price, maybe $5.

Find a junk motherboard and you might all the parts you need for free.Found a new one online 10 bucks, worth it to me.was a decent board with the 50mhz DX2. It's on the way,Thanks for all your help.

Solve : why does my computer lock up and restarts itself??

Answer»

Why does my computer LOCK up and then restart when I am playing a game? I've had this problem for 2 years now and still can't figure out why. It locks up almost EVERYTIME when I am playing a computer game. When I received my Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, I did not find any thermal paste but on the top of the box it says with thermal compound. Does that mean I don't need to worry about putting thermal paste?

SYSTEM specs:
Pentium 4 3.0 GHz (52 to 68 degrees)
512 MB RAM
80 GB Maxtor
Radeon 9600 256 MBTheir should have been some paste or most likely a thermal pad stuck on the bottom of the Heatsink.  If there was no pad or paste then that is your problem.  68 degrees C??  looks like too much to me.  Is that under load or idle.  Under load it will go up.

Check your ATI temp also....Games(3D) will push it to the limit if they are recent 3Dgames.  Video drivers may also be the problem.   What version drivers for the 9600 you have??What type of Power Supply Unit is intalled?
Do you hear any beeps?

Quote

Pentium 4 3.0 GHz (52 to 68 degrees)

Awfully warm for a Pentium CPU. You should look into more adequate cooling.

Cooler Master is an excellent brand. How can I find out if there's a thermal pad stuck on the bottom of my heatsink?

I use a 350 watt power supply by Antec. And yes, it reaches around 68 degrees after running current games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2.

I used SpeedFan to check my volts, and I don't think it's a power supply issue but it looks like my CPU is overheating. Here is a link to my results. http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7734/speedfan2dr.gifYou will have to remove the heatsink from the cpu and look at the bottom to see it the pad is there.  If there is nothing there on the sink or cpu, then order some artic silver paste and apply it to the cpu\heatsink.  Look at this link to see what it is...

Solve : New PSU or New Desktop Case??

Answer»

Hello,

Recently I had an opportunity of replacing 300 Wt PSU in my desktop computer.  The old one died with popping sound and a bit of smoke.
I often looked on ebuyer.co.uk and saw quite a number of PSUs there with fantastic SPECS (but no mention of dimensions not on WEBSITE nor when calling for their help) and therefore I could NEVER THINK that replacing it is going to become such a headache.
My old PSU was of these dimensions:   12cm x 8.5cm x 15.0cm (a bit more narrow to be able to FIT into a desktop on its side)

Most common PSUs are: 14cm x 8.5cm x 15.0cm

With 3 big harddrives and other staff I would like to replace it with more powerful PSU.  Unfortunately all “mini” PSUs are 300 or less Wt.

Questions in order of preference:
1. Is there any big size desktop case (not mini) that will accommodate a normal PSU ?
2. Did anyone try to modify any existing normal size PSUs to fit into such desktop?
3. Are there any PSUs on ebuyer or anywhere else with dimentions of 12x8.6x15?

Many thanks

1. See explanation below
2. See explanation below
3.See explanation below

You need to determine wheter your case is AT or ATX.

Use the following article to do so:

Form Factor

Most common form factor now is ATX. All ATX form factor PSUs will fit inside an ATX case.

However, recently, a new form factor for the P1 motherboard power connector has come out which is called ATX 2.0. This will not always fit on ATX 1.0 mainboards. Be careful when obtaining a PSU and be certain to avoid ATX 2.0 unless a converter cable can also be bought. (24 to 20 pin)

AT is heavily outdated and these products are most likely not being sold in stores anymore.

Install a PSU of at least 400 watt or more for system stability. Do not buy the cheapest available.

Most LAPTOPS seem to come with a BIOS setting that allows you to SET them to either performance or silence.

Have you tried that first?I didn't send any kind of option like that in BIOS.  Would that have caused it to eventually overheat anyway?  Does anyone know how to tell what size fan I have? Quote

Not very knowledgeable when it concerns laptops, perhaps it only applies to Toshiba.I would suggest to do nothing.  Even if you could find a quieter fan, it would have to provide the same air flow as the original, or the CPU will overheat and the computer will DIE.  If you feel confortable "cracking the CASE open", you could get a part number from the fan and then look for a replacement.  There are three criteria:
1.  Size - MUST be the same
2.  cfm - must be equal to or greater than what you have
3.  dB -  must be less than what you have

Does anything appear on the monitor?

Do you hear any beeps?

Try resetting the BIOS if you answer no to both questions

To RESET the BIOS, take the following steps:

1. Power down computer
2. Take countermeasures against electro-static discharge
3. REMOVE computer casing
4. Inspect mainboard for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery

In case of CMOS jump switch:

Follow instructions provided with the mainboard manual.

In case of CMOS battery:

I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds.
II. After 10-15 seconds, place the CMOS battery back.

5. Power on system.

Do not power on the system when CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when CMOS battery is non-present. done tried all them test  and no good...... friend said  pc= computer   work fine but it loaded slow  when I pluged it up  I had no responce?done tried all them test  and no good...... friend said  pc= computer   work fine but it loaded slow  when I pluged it up  I had no responce?Try reseating the hardware. Solve : SATA not recognized?

Answer»

Hello,

I've just installed new hardware on my pc case, new GIGABYTE mobo, amd 3200+ venice, and WD 10000rpm sata hard drive.

I can get into the bios, but the hard drive isn't recognized. I've disable raid in the bios, and tried installing winxp using the F6 to install drivers, but nothing happens. If I skip the driver install, I get a no hard drive detected message.

I've tried both the nvidia orange cable, and the red cable... tried both methods of power for the sata (sata power cable and legacy)

This is my first TIME trying to build a pc, so my WORDING might not be accurate, but I need help!!

Thanks for any ideas anyone can provide... i'm open to anything at this point. The HDD can not be used until you install Windows XP. By PRESSING F6, it will ask you to insert drivers for the SATA HDD. Do so.

If you do not have any drivers, you will have to obtain them. Without drivers, no installation, no detection.check the jumper settings on all drives!try to open your bios i THINK it has a SATA config there maybe it is disabled.....

No lights at all come on when I boot up..What do you mean by,   plus are in properly??plus=plugs, my bad typing.  Try disconnecting it from the ATA/IDE flat ribbon cable and then see if it receives power.

If that does not work, connect it to a different power connector. If that does not work, it is safe to assume the drive has given up the ghost. What is this pc/make/model.......maybe a bios issue! Quote

Solve : I need advice on installing second hard drive?

Answer»

I have an extra hard drive and I want to install it on my computer for extra SPACE. I know how to put it in and hook it up but someone said I would have to install drivers.True or not? ...so do I just install it and DELETE all the software and OS on it and go ,or is there more to it than that?

Thank you
Amy DayHello, Amy.

I will assume that the extra Hard Disk Drive is used for storage, correct?

Follow the steps written below if that is the case:

1. Turn off computer and disconnect it from the power grid.
2. Take precautions against Electro-static discharge
3. Remove the computer casing
4. Handle the HDD with care when inserting it.

Now depending on the configuration on your PC:

If you plan on connecting the Hard Disk Drive to the same IDE channel as the HDD allready installed, set the new HDD to Slave and the HDD allready installed to Master.

The same applies to the second channel. However, the second channel (IDE 2) could be empty and you would need to set the drive to Master.

(Jumper instructions can be found on top of the HDD)

In case of a SATA HDD (Thin orange cable), you do not need to bother with Master/Slave or Cable Select as these are not present.

6. Once the Hard Disk Drive is fastened and connected to the Power Supply Unit and the Mainboard, it is safe to reconnect the computer to the power grid. You may wish to keep the case door open to see if no problems occur when booting the computer.

Windows should automatically detect the Hard Disk Drive. You may, however, need to partition it by going to:

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Manage
3. Storage
4. Disk management

I hope that this information is adequate, should you require more instance do not hesitate to inquire.

Ok they are installed on same IDE and slave for new one master for old one. Went to disk management and it has the old one as..disk 0 drive c healthy.
The new one is under ..disk 1 basic unallocated.

Where did I go wrong??? Or is this where I am supposed to partition it? If so how do you do that?

Thank you
Amy DayAlright,I figured it out. I reread your post and ASSUMED that you partition it somehow in disk management and finally found it.

Thank you for your help.

Amy DayNo problem, I INDEED forgot to mention that you also need to format and partition the HDD before you can use it.

Solve : Not enough Fan connectors - P4C800 Deluxe?

Answer»

Hi, does anybody found a hidden Fan connector on the P4C800 other than the CPU, power and chassis fan connectors? because I have two spaces to place fans in front of my computer and placing just one would not DISSIPATE heat correctly.

Thanks,

-MarcoThere is no such thing as a hidden fan connector. Your mainboard manual should cover every connector present on the mainboard.I know there is no such things as a hidden Fan connector. What I meant is if there is another Fan connector That is not SHOWN in the manual because I bough another fan.All connectors are shown in the manual.Hi You can buy fan connection cords that connect to the fan and to any of the the power outlests that are FREE, so in some cases you can run up to four fans thats is case fans,
What motherboard/and psu does this question you ask RELATE to!it is the Asus P4C800 Dleuxe

So I can buy connectors? great, I'll look at this thanks Quote

Be on the lookout for a connector that allows the fans to be directly connected to the PSU. It is the easiest way to connect fans, however, you will not be able to monitor their speed.

You can also STRIP the connectors of any power cable and connect the fans to them by removing the original connector. Doesn't look very pretty, but it does a good job.

Solve : Screen Stays Black?

Answer» HI everyone.

I have recently completed my first self-build, and to my amazement it actually works.

The only problem is, that occassionally, I will switch on, and it fires up, but my screen remains black. If I then RESTART, it boots up fine.

I am a little worried because my old computer broke, but booting up, but the screen always remained black.

The monitor is plugged in CORRECTLY and everything. What THINGS should I be checking PLEASE?

Many thanks for any replies posted.

  • Reseat and test all hardware individually.
-- Take special care with the videocard, it may be loose
  • Reseat all cables and firmly reconnect them
  • When the screen is black, do you hear any beeps or does the computer normally boot?
1) Sometimes the inside of the monitor is bad. Test the monitor in the following manner:Turn the monitor OFF. Unplug your monitor from your computer, but leave the power connected to the monitor. Turn the monitor ON. It should give you a little thingy that says to check the signal cable.

2) Make sure your monitor and computer unit are compatible.

3) make sure you have the proper drivers. How old is the monitor! The monitor is only a couple of years old. I am only a layman, but I really don't feel that it is anything to do with the monitor.

Solve : New computer losing time, windows close in segment?

Answer»

My daughter has a brand new Dell 3000 running Windows XP.  The computer is consistently losing time over a period of days and when she closes out different windows, they close in fragments.  Sometimes leaving fragments on the SCREEN, making her reboot to clear them.  Her old computer, a clone that I built, consistently lost time also.  I replaced three CMOS batteries in that machine over a period of one year.  She is using the same power strip.  Not an APS strip, just a normal power strip.  Could this strip be causing the problem?  Could the electric power going into the house be fluctuating and causing the problem? She's ready to ditch this new Dell the same way he ditched the perfectly good clone simply because she thinks she has trash computers.  Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated as I'm running out of ideas.  Thanks.Does she completely unpower the machine when she turns it off by unplugging it from the power grid?Computers were never designed to be clocks, I'm yet to find one that keeps good time.
If your talking about just a minute a day or less then there's nothing wrong with it.
Your frafments are a different problem.
Tell us more? She leaves it run most of the time but when she does turn it off, she simply pushes the on/off button but does not unplug anything.

I think that a clock losing a minute or two occasionally is not a big deal.  That isn't my main concern.  It's the fact that this has happened on two totally different computers, this one now is a brand new one, and I've had several computers that I've not had to change out a CMOS battery in four years.  Her last computer I had to replace the batter three times in one year.

My main concern is the fact that when she starts closing windows, it's like they disappear in squares, one at a time altho sometimes they close perfectly normal, but when they close, it's like they kind of "dissolve" from the screen instead of just a clean "zap" and they're gone. Sometimes, a small square, say about 2 inches x 2 inches, will stay on the desktop and in ORDER to get it go away altogether, she has to reboot.Has she used software that has been installed on both PCs?

I suggest that you immediatly do a thorough scan for viruses, spyware and trojan horses.

Try disabeling the auto synchronization of the clock and see if that will help keep time. Perhaps the clock is trying to synchronize with a server that is not functiong properly.

Your motherboard does not support 512 modules.

It says:  "...Maximum Memory 256MB w/SIMMs/512 MB w/DIMMs..."

SIMMS are 72-pins and are no longer manufactured.  DIMMS are 168-pins.  It appears you could use two (2) 256MB PC100/133 DIMMSok thx, i'm just gonna add more memory, i've decided not to change the mobo SINCE it looks like to much work ANYWAY. Quote

The risks and costs involved would indeed be several times greater than when simply adding more RAM.

Should you require more advice, do not hesitate to come again.Heh...we could get a lot of upgrades for this kind of comp. Everything is seriuosly outdated, but if like you said, you only use if for e-mail and internet, then it's pretty good. I would go with the RAM, but if you were planing to CREATE a new comp with a new mobo, i'd take a new NLi, possibly an AMD Atholin 64 or FX, and throw in some fast ram (your choice), plus get a nice and cheap GeForce 6800.Update the motherboard??or  go with flow and deside for yourself!

Solve : Laptop graphics card?

Answer»

Ive been using my pc for years with no problems, 2 weeks ago i bought a laptop and since then everything has gone down the toilet.

This question isnt so much a problem with the machine, i would just like some advice as i know absolutely nothing about laptops.

I have a Dell Latitude Cpi-A 400xt, pentium II 4OOmhz, 4.5gb HDD, and 64mb of ram. I RECENTLY tried to install a couple of games and although I reach the system requirements after installation the games wont actually play.

I think it is down to the fact that i have an incredibly basic graphics card and i dont think I even have a video card (3D or otherwise). On top of this I have been unable to find out what CARDS i have as i do not know where to look.

I think i need to UPGRADE but i dont know what cards are compatible or even if it is something i can do myself.

Many thanks,

I am familiar with that laptop.  You need more RAM.  Graphics "card" cannot be updated.   Serial number (Dell calls it Service Tag) is printed on the bottom.  It was never designed as a "gaming" computer.  All the Latitudes are business MACHINES for the road warrior, i.e. lightweight.

With more RAM, you can run Win2k or WinXP very nicely.
Cheers guys, the RAM ugrade is already in the pipeline. As for the games thing its not really that important, if the graphics card can't be changed then theres not alot i can do about it.

What does suprise me though, is that there are a lot of laptops that can't easily be upbraded, you'd have thought sopmeone would have come up with some sort of external graphics card.

Maybe this isn,t posible, my technical knowledge isn't all that hot, but if it is someone should make one. Maybe there is a market for it. Quote

I do not think this would WORK as good as it sounds. Laptops are not quite meant for games or graphic design.

You first have to install soundcard drivers.

These can be obtained from the manufacturers website or the CD-ROM given with the soundcard or computer it self.

If you do not know what the above means or how to do so, do not hesitate to inquire for instructions.Im not sure about what make my sound card is. Any online tests you know of?Since the drivers are not yet installed, there is no simple way of determining what your soundcard is.

You can try the following:

  • REMOVING the case doors and inspect the PCI slots for the soundcard and its name
  • List the name of your MAINBOARD (In case the soundcard is onboard)
  • Listing the brand and model number of your computer
  • Search through all the software/documentation that was given with your computer.

Do you have a sound icon in your system tray?Your speakers should still work! Have you turned the mains adapter on! And  the speakers!

Solve : front USB ISSUES! front USB's not working??

Answer»

Please help! I am stuck on an issue with a USB stick recently purchased. The stick is fine, the issue is it will only work on the 2 USB ports on back of the computer, not with the USB ports on the front. I have tried other devices, and the same thing happen, fine with back usb ports, but not with front. I downloaded a program to SEE if the fron ports were recognised, and this has told me they are USB 1.1, but i'm not sure if this means they are actually connected? Anyway, i cant GET any device to work on the front USB ports, any suggestions?

Thanks! The front ports may not, if they are INDEED USB 1.1, deliver ENOUGH power for the USB stick to work.

Try connecting a device that does not draw a lot of power, like a mouse, to see if they are functioning properly.more INFO system specs!

Solve : BIOS Not Detecting IDE Drives...?

Answer»

I just finished putting a new computer together--Pentium 4 processor, EPoX 5EGA+ motherboard, no OS yet...  I've got a Maxtor hard drive, an old floppy I salvaged out of a different computer, and 3 CD drives--TWO salvaged, and one new (LiteOn CD-RW).  I've got the hard drive on the Primary Master IDE port, and the LiteOn and one of the others on the  Secondary IDE, one slave, one master.  I haven't plugged in the third CD drive.  BIOS detects the hard drive, and will detect a CD drive, if it's on the Primary slave, but it won't detect anything on Secodary.  I have already checked the jumpers on the CD drives multiple times, and ensured the drives are getting power.  Secondary IDE is enabled in BIOS, but nothing picks them up.  I'm at a complete loss.  Can someone tell me how to fix it?Make certain that:

  • ATA/IDE flat ribbon cables are properly connected
  • All power connectors are firmly seated.
  • The ATA/IDE cable for the secundairy channel is not faulty.

Why install an older Floppy Disk Drive? Might as well buy one new and eliminate any possible problems in that area due to outdated hardware.I just haven't gotten around to it--and besides, this computer has turned into a MONEY pit enough already--the less money I have to spend on it anymore, the better.  I've tried using 5 different IDE cables, they've all had the same result.  The cables are firmly seated, I make sure of that every time.  From what I can tell, this is an unusual circumstance--I know several people have had problems with secondary IDE devices, but the problem is usually solved by fixing a jumper SETTING, or replacing the cables, or something simple like that, or enabling secondary IDE in BIOS.  Unfortunately, all of those solutions have proven useless to me.To many drives.......try the NORM....one f/d one h/d..one cdrom drive and go for there!imaho.Though I could do that, I know for a fact that I can do more.  I seriously doubt that there'd be three IDE ports on the motherboard if I was only meant to use one.  Surely there's something else I can do than limit myself to one of each drive. Why not try what i suggested......nothing to lose!only time......which is in short-supply.......

Solve : not getting signal when computer is truned on?

Answer»

I have windows 98. when I turned on the computer I get nothing on the monitor? no signal at all... check my tower and the power on light is on, HD activity light is on
I tried to turned it off but it will not shut down, so I turned it off by switching the off the power switch on the back off the power supply box.  I check the inside of my system to ensure that there is no loose connection and also the monitor plug.  I also test the video card on another system it works.  I also test the monitor by disconnecting all my hardware from the motherboard(CD and hard drive) turn on and I get a video display of the mother board Setup. reconnect the hardwares and then turn on, nothing no signal no video display and the system won't shut down with the use of the power on and off switch.  please help!!!! I would suggest you try a diffrent Graphics card. And reseat your Ram. I know you SAY your Graphics card works in a diffrent computer, but this happened to me once. The drivers just became corrupt and untill i installed another Graphics card even THOUGH the one i took out was working, (as like you i tried on a different computer) i couldnt boot up my PC.

if it boots up with another Graphics card then try reinstalling the one you took out. I did and it worked for me.

Other things i would LOOK at, is your cpu Fan spinning when you start the computer. Could even be a fault with the power supply.Does the monitor power on! led light on! or is the fuse 1.5ma blown!in it.....or is the main plug fuse blown......if a monitor.....is power up and has a problem.....it will display signal ERROR! check the connections/monitor....

3. Enter BIOS
4. Set first boot device to A:
5. Insert CD-ROM
6. SAVE and exit the BIOS
7. Choose to boot with CD-ROM support once prompted.

From here you have several choices:

I. You can create new partitions typing Fdisk in A:\
II. You can format by typing format C:\ in A:\
-- I advise to do both before INSTALLING Windows.

8. Once done type X:\
9. Type Setup in X:\ prompt

Solve : Is There a reasonable priced data recovery company?

do not do anything with the faulty hard drive, PCinspecter is free download it into a differant pc  and then connect the drive. if it is still mechanically working pc inspecter will find and recover almost anything,  copy onto an empty drive or partition, it has the same problems as any other recovery software has in rescueing compressed files like Mpeg and Mp3 and encoded stuff. How did your hard drive crash?  What happened?  I think that might determine if your data can be recovered.  I wouldn't worry about paying $$$ about getting music files back...especially if they are from p2pI had been using the computer, with no unusual sounds coming from the hard drive. I then went to watch TV and after a few minutes I turned around and noticed the Gateway LOGO on my screen. I went to computer and it would not do anything. So I turned it off and back on and that's when I heard the hard drive making a clicking sound while booting up. I get the notice hard drive not found. I downloaded PCInspector and it does not find the bad drive. I have it in the computer as a slave drive since I went and bought another hard drive. It looks like it might be beyond repair. I was not worried about music files, just some pics and a few documents that I wanted back. Thanks Quote

...I heard the hard drive making a clicking sound while booting up...

Classic symptom of dead hard drive.  Take it out and give a good smack with you hand.  Every now and then it will come on long enough for you to retrieve your data.  If not, nothing lost.

Data recovery is very expensive because they must open the hard drive, remove the platters and install them into another hard drive.  Then they retrieve whatever data they can and burn a CD.  I know someone who had this done and it cost $500USD.
Another thing I have noticed also, after trying to start computer with corrupt hard drive installed, the hard drive is very hot to the touch after only one start up. I have even been told to put in FREEZER for a few hours and then try it. I have tried everything. Quote

I have a PDF file that contains over 100 ways to get a broken down Hard Disk Drive to work. Send me your E-mail adress in a PM and I will send it over.
This depends on the hard drive......i have stripped drives down......and loaded the platters as  mini-cd....in the drive the only problem....is finding a cdrive to run at the same speed as the hard drive!some of the data can be salvage......what was the make of the drive.....dont tell me maxtor.......Where are based?uk/*europewestern digital   40gigAnother trick you wish to try......is this......place the hard drive in freezer.....for a couple of hours in a plastic bag......dry it properly....before installing it    some people have done this ......... This is not recommended for people who unsure and are really desparate  unless you are not>>> my advise it dont disclaimer in progess   another trick would be to by an old wd 40gig case and transfer the platters across......These are suggestions........at the end of the time its up to person/s concerned  to do what they wish ! Its their pc and its their life......life worth more.....or just wackit......like cc has said......I have tried the freezer thing with no luck. So you are saying find another 40 gig western digital and GO from there? Is it difficult to change the platters out? Quote

Its not only difficult. It is impossible. The slighest bit of dust or dirt can cause the other Hard Disk Drive to fail just as easily.

If you are desperate to recover data, contact a professional. If you are into experimentation, read the PDF I have E-mailed you. Quote

Can you say:  "Microsurgery" or "Watch Repair"?

If you have access to an operating room and have the skill of a surgeon...maybe.  Or if you know a watchmaker or jewler...maybe.  Yes, some watches are still repaired, i.e. Rolex.

Actually, the facilities hard drives are ASSEMBLED in are cleaner than an operating room.  So, picture a watchmaker in an operating room.
I can feel it trying to spin, in between clicking noises, when I hold the hard drive in my hand while booting up.
I have tried the freezer trick as well as the lightly tapping trick. Looks like I have run out of ideas SHORT of sending it off.

Solve : Can't reload OS on Toshiba CF-47 Toughbook?

Answer»

I got this laptop from a friend & was told it had been working ok, but would freeze up on occasion.   The user would pull the battery to cut power & reboot, which apparently worked.

Then, upon booting, "save to disk file not available/disabled" or something to that effect would appear, but it would boot.  Now it won't boot.

I'd like to format the hard drive (wipe clean) & install a new XP Home OS I have.

How might I accomplish this?Reset the BIOS to DEFAULT / fail safe settings? You said :  "Toshiba CF-47 Toughbook"
Isn't this a PANASONIC?Did I say, Toshiba?  I meant Panasonic, sorry.

It behaves as DESCRIBED with all settings restored in Set Up to Default Settings.

I believe this includes BIOS.  Are safe settings the same as booting in Safe Mode?

That is a rather dubious mistake.

Is that you, Flame?

No, see the following article for more information:

How to enter the BIOS or CMOS setupI deleted existing partitions on the hard drive, reformated the raw space as NTSF, & tried to reinstall the OS.

All apprears ok as it copies files, etc., but on the third stage, "Installing Windows", what should take 39 minutes never completes.  The 39 minute counter never diminishes.

Upon stopping this stage (after 2 HOURS), the following appears:

Error:
Instalation Failed:D:\l386\asms

Is this the code for, "Time to see if your toughbook's tougher than a sledghammer?"That depends. Does it come with or without that smiley?

You might want to try the following:

  • Ensure the laptop is not overheating
  • Reformat the HDD and ensure that you are doing a full format
  • Use a legal copy of Windows XP
  • Clean the Windows XP CD.
Are using recovery disks! more info>>that was omitted from your post!I've done all 4 bullets in yourlatest post, Raptor, to no avail.

I don't understand Merlin's post Quote

No one ever does, do not despair.

He meant to say if you have recovery CD-ROMs or diskettes as opposed to an OEM version of Windows XP.

ok ill try that hopefully it works  Can you tell us more about the situation you are in, should CLEARING the CMOS not work?
