Answer»

What can I do? STILL run WIN 98?
Arm yourself with 2 things.
1) MAKE & model number of your scanner. ()
2) Your Operating System (xp?)

Then GOOGLE the +"make & model number" +driver.
Note the " " to enclose multiple words.just FIND the driver for it--try driver guide.com its probably not plug and play compatablehttp://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/meandxp.mspx

Solve : Cannot hear Sound?

Answer»

I have dial-up internet service. When I connect to the internet, the "sound" of the computer DIALING and connecting comes through my speakers. That is not really a problem except, I cannot hear any other sounds. When I CHECK it with the audio setup wizard, it says " The sound device is CURRENTLY in use by ANOTHER audio application"....and I have no other audio application in use.try pressing ctl+alt+del to see if there are any other programs running, or disable the sound of your modem by going into its settings,it might be INTERFERING with the computer's sound.

Solve : a simple 2 laptop XP network?

Answer»

Hi Group,

When I visit my friend I take my laptop. We WOULD LIKE to have a simple way to be ABLE to use both of our LAPTOPS on the internet through EITHER of our connections.
My XP laptop help has taken me through the wizards connection advise to make mine the HOST. What do we need to buy to get us both connected SAFELY to the internet at the same time.
My friend is with AOL who seem to be less user friendly than BT who I am with. We are only dial up anytime.

Best wishes

Dave EdwardsWell, I see that you can't be the host... What about his computer? Make that one the host? Which OS does he have? Is this a Dial-up network?

[glb]Flame[/glb]In this case, your ISP will be irrelevant as you will have to connect through his laptop.

See if this guide contains the type of network you would like to create.
Hi,

Thanks for the quick replies
I am at a loss as to why I have to use HIS computer as I have been connecting each day using my own ISP connection. We would like to use out individual ethernet ports through a device to the phone line.
Would "Network Adaptors" help, our local dealer offers 10/100Mbps PCMCIA Network Adaptor £15.
We both have XP laptops bought this year.

Best wishes

Dave EdwardsYou can not connect an RJ-45 connection to an RJ-11. Which is Dial-up.

You will have to install a modem. I doubt there is such a thing as a Router or Hub for a modem connection so one computer will have to be set up as the Host and the other one as Client.

You should refer to the articles I gave you, they will answer your questions and give you an example.

Solve : S.M.A.R.T.?

Answer»

What could cause the S.M.A.R.T. to do this: PC cards not SHOWING up, etc. How to fix this. . .for my customer

Oh--and we think it has something to do with the S.M.A.R.T. because he asked about that and the PC book said something about PC cards being related to S.M.A.R.T.

Windows XP (not sure which edition), 10GB Western Digital Caviar HD, pentium IV processor.Sorry, I forgot to mention: replaced 60GB Western digital HD with 10 GB drive after 60GB drive's little motor-runner thing got fried (rest of drive and data otherwise intact).  S.M.A.R.T.I already LOOKED at that. it did not answer my question. We're almost certain it is a good HD.Download this:  http://support.wdc.com/download/windlg/WinDLG.zipOkay. I'll have him try that. Someone said something about turning it off? would S.M.A.R.T. fail to register if it was disabled? Quote

would S.M.A.R.T. fail to register if it was disabled?

Yes. But why would you want to? If it indicates a Hard DISK Drive is failing, you should immediatly back-up data and test it.

Can we re-enable it? we think it might be causing the  the PC cards to not show up.  We're pretty sure the HD is okay. Is what I described in my first post possible? Quote

You can enable and disable S.M.A.R.T if the BIOS allows you to.

I assume this concerns a Laptop? I have no experience with PC cards.Tower, actually :-/ Quote
Tower, actually :-/

And you make use of PC cards in a tower? What for?Sound card, TV card, etc. not registering on the PC. Also, this customer asked about S.M.A.R.T. not showing up, so that's why I titled the topic that. Quote

Those are called Expansion cards, PC cards are PCMCIA cards that go into the side of a laptop.

Does Windows XP autodetect them?If it saw them, I wouldn't be telling you that it doesn't!! and it definitely doesn't!Is the plug and play program enabled in the bios setup..

Solve : Moving "my Documents" to a new hard driv?

Answer»

I just added a hard drive on my system for added storage.  How can I move all of the “my Documents” for all of the users on my system to the NEW hard drive and still keep them separated so that the only ONE who can see their documents and access their documents is the user that is currently LOGGED in.  Why do you want to? Is it XP or some other OS?Log in as each user. Make a new "My Documents" folder on the drive you want. Find the SETTING in the programs you use that will allow you to choose the default save to folder. Enter the path to the new "My Doc..." while logged in as each user.JDK:

Easy! in Windows XP Professional:

1. Right-click on My Documents and choose Properties from the context menu.
2. In My Documents Properties, select the Target tab.
3. Under Target Folder LOCATION, click Move.
4. In the Select a Destination dialog box, find the new folder on the hard drive where you wish to move the contents of your My Documents folder and select OK.
5. Select OK to the My Documents Properties dialog box to save the changes.

Solve : CD/DVD burner isn't showing up anymore?

Answer»

The CD/DVD burner was working until I was trying to burn songs from itunes and the computer froze and the burner wasn't working.  Then I tried to save some jpeg files and there is nothing there to save them to the hardrive.  It's like it isn't there anymore and I don't know what happened, why or where it has gone.  Please help! Quote

Then I tried to save some jpeg files and there is nothing there to save them to the hardrive.

You are going to have to be more specific.Well I think you must be simple and specific. Try to mention more detail about your computer, software you are using for burning CDs and about your CD/DVD burner. Are you SURE that you have DVD burner?
Bye...ee....I right clicked on my computer in the start menu and WENT to properties which brought me to hardware and device manager.  It says DVD/CD-ROM drives there are two exclamation POINTS at NEC DVD+RW ND-1100A and SAMSUNG CD-ROM SC-148C.  I was told I should uninstall these things and restart the computer.  I have windows XP and that it should recognize this and automatically REINSTALL the drives.  But it didn't work.  The exclamation points were there before I unistalled them and are still there.  Yes I do have a burner I have used it many times and it has worked until now.
What error code is given? This is what I get.

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

The drives aren't showing up in the removable drive devices either.  I don't know what happened.Be certain they are enabled in the BIOS.After you check the BIOS, MAKE sure to uninstall and reinstall your software you are using.  Had a similar problem with my laptop, but I removed the program I was using, and actually installed a newer version and it worked perfectly.

Also check for any BIOS updates that might have been released

Solve : Motherboard Failure? OPower but no beeps, POST LED?

Answer»

Hi, some one gave me (from someone else) a Sony vaio pcv-rx470ds PC (Intel 850 chipset), with what appears to be a dead motherboard. After turning it on, the fans spin but the screen stays black, and  the PC emits no beeps. The  LED's on the Keyboard  flash once at start up (so the fuse is OK), but then stay off, and the keyboard is dead. Hitting Ctrl Alt Del or sleep buttons does NOTHING, nor will the Caps light or any other LED work.    The monitor and the video card both work with another PC (the one i am using), as well as the HARD drive. Trying a different monitor makes no difference. The only lights on the front of the PC that ever do anything (no floppy or optical drive seek) is one for the hard drive, which stays lit for about 20 seconds and then goes off. Nothing will  make it do anything after that. Placing a windows start up disk in the floppy makes no difference at start up; the floppy (nor the CD) drive is never checked (no lit LEDS).  Inside the case there are no LED indicators that go on. The power supply voltages (red=+5 v,  yellow=12v) seem fine. The motherboard shows no signs of decay, such as capacitor plague http://www.answers.com/topic/capacitor-plague

Does anyone here see anything else but a a mobo failure? I would also like to ask if anyone knows who the motherboard manufacturer is for this (Sony vaio pcv-rx470ds), and what the socket number is (i think it is 423), or how that relates to ordering one. And what do you think would be a resonable cost? Never got this far before. Thank God for your help.Have you tried resetting the BIOS.Drivers>>http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/register/register.asp?l=en

operating system on hard drive is?..Have you tried Reseating the Ram or trying it in a different slot. Or tried a different STICK of Ram.Thank you both for your replies. The OS is XP (i did not list it bcz it never boots as far as  the OS), and i did not reset the bios. I will have to look up how to do that. I took the mobo out yesterday and cleaned it of dust, and reseated the cpu, and made sure everything was plugged in well. Everything looked very good, no real signs of wear, but the same thing happens. It starts but never even shows anythng on a screen. I will try resetting the bios next as it cannot hurt?

Also i may try removing everything from the mobo excpet the pc speaker, and see if i can at least get a beep when i power it up. It is a micro-atx, socket 423

Thanks again, DAN Quote

and i did not reset the bios. I will have to look up how to do that.

To reset the BIOS, take the following steps:

1. Power down computer
2. Take countermeasures against electro-static discharge
3. Remove computer casing
4. Inspect mainboard for a CMOS jump switch or CMOS battery

In case of CMOS jump switch:

Follow instructions provided with the mainboard manual.

In case of CMOS battery:

I. Remove CMOS battery for approximately 10-15 seconds.
II. After 10-15 seconds, place the CMOS battery back.

5. Power on system.

Do not power on the system when CMOS jumper is set to clear_cmos or when CMOS battery is non-present. Thank you very much for trying to help. I took the cmos battery out and putting it back in after about 30 secs, but still no screen, beeps, posts, etc. at power up.  I also tried powering it up after alternatively taking out 2 of the (2) twin memory sticks, then without the HD, as well as with a graphics card that goes in a PCI slot, but in each instance all i get is the fans running.

I also tried taking the mobo out with nothing but the power to the board as well as the only line that would go to a  PC speaker (Front Header Paner: see system reference manual at http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=PCVRX470DS), but no screen or beeps at power up.

There is power to the HD, as well as the other drives, but not as a result of software.

What would you expect if it was a processor failure, versus the mobo?  I do not have access to any other processor that would fit in this (and they are too expensive new).  I have been using an AMD 650mhz (w/98se) extensively for years, with nothing like this ever happning. But it is a good learning experience. Yet i pray i can get it going.  Thank you again and may God bless you for your help.   dan
May i ask why the person gave you this mobo! did they have problems with it!

Do you have the mobo drivers!A relative of a friend in another state.  I only talked to him only once, and he said it failed and thought it ws the mobo. I hope  to try to talk to him agian and get details.

I must go now, talk again monday.  Thank you much for your help, in Jesus name.Have you tried using a different Power Supply Unit?God bless you for still trying.  No i hacve not tried a different PS, as i do not have one that i am sure would work in this, and the voltages i have checked going to the HD are fine. It sounds like the mobo, and if it is the procesor then it is too much. I am praying and plugging, and will keep you posted.

dan
www.peacebyjesus.com
Try using a different Power Supply Unit first. These are easier to replace without damaging anything.I only have one SPARE power supply from an old pc, and i am not sure how interchangable ps are. With the cd's, fans, and hd all getting power, i hope to check power going to the board soon.

Meanwhile i have been prayerfully looking at some offers on ebay for mobos,  such as this, which are cheaper than the offical ps for the vaio  i think. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6795422133&fromMakeTrack=true
I also saw compatible processors very cheap.

The problem however is finding a micro atx, socket 423, which measures 9.6 x 9.6, and most of them seem to be regular atx boards, which are too long for the case. Of course, i think you can go with a socket 478 if you get an adapter for the chip.

I'll keep fishing,

Solve : new hard drive - mp3 playback?

Answer» OK, bare with me here, i'm 18, & do not know a great deal about pcs!

Saturday night i INSTALLED a new 80GB harddrive into my PC. ( Dell dimension 2400, Windows XP home ed, 512M ram, 40gb harddrive ) With the intention of re-formatting my C drive & re-installing Windows for a complete clear up. The new harddrive is set to slave, & the orignal 40gb to master.

As soon as the new harddrive was installed i noticed the MP3 playback was crackled & glitching, and the speed/quality of the playback varied by the second.

Yesterday i re-formatted my C drive & re-installed windows, and all the nessessary drives i had before. Yet the problem with my mp3 playback is still occuring.

I've tried switching the files from my new harddrive to my old one, which made no difference. The computer can play CD's fine, it's just struggling with mp3's.

As you can imagine, after a long 7 hours of re-formating, re-installing, & finding drivers, something like this can prove to be extremely irritating. especially for someone who doesn't know much about pc's! heh.

what could possibly be causing this problem?
any help is appreciated!
thanks
beckyWhat if you copy the MP3 onto the new HDD? Quote

Do you notice other difficulties?

Poor audio i.e. scratchy soundthe sound JITTERS as if it's being played off a scratched cd.

i'll do what it says there & see if that makes any difference.

Solve : major video card issue, no display?

Answer»

hi everyone, i need help, big time

I rencently purchased a radeon 9550 AGP, previously i had a Geforce 5200 PCI,

Now when installing pci cards, i no u have to disable onboard graphics, so did, but when i went to intsall AGP, it wouldn't work, because the pci card was overiding the AGP, so i disbaled the Geforce in windows, and made a HUGE mistake, i didn't install NE new drivers for radeon first, so now i dont c any display at all!, i feel like such a moron, i just wasn't thinking:(

now i have tried booting in safe mode, everything

what happens is i turn on comp,l normal boot stuff happens, bios ect...

then xp loading SCREEN comes up, then sometimes checkdisk, but after that, nothing, the screen is left the same as it was, with checkdisk displayed or nothing at all!!

windows still continues running, i can hear sounds and stuff, but no display,

currently i have 3 video cards in: geforce, radeon, and on board, its crazy!!

can ne one help me..........plz?Set AGP as the first video DEVICE in the BIOS.ummm, c i WOULD try that, if it were an option in bios.......
this bios on this comp dont seem to have it for whatever reason:(Before Windows XP loads press F8

Try either safe mode or Last KNOWN good configuration.
i have tried that, unfortunatly, and with no luckNeither will work?

Remove all videocards but the videocard where the drivers have been loaded for.You may want to try setting the bios for PCI then remove the PCI video card, if the bios can't find a PCI video card then it should look for the AGP video card.
After that, start in safe mode, remove all video drivers & install the AGP ones.
Just my thoughts.

Solve : Keyboard port pins broke; need alternative.?

Answer»

The keyboard port pins are BENT,, so I need an alternative to USING the PS/2 port.

I'm thinking of getting a USB card, and getting a USB keyboard. How would i go about setting it up. I know how to install the card, and plug the keyboard in, but wouldn't I have to change some settings in the BIOS so that it looks for the keyboard on USB, and not on the PS/2 port?

Help...
Are there any other alternatives to get around this keyboard port problem?

Obtain a PS/2 to COM or PS/2 to USB converter.Compaq Deskpro 6000 with Windows 98.

I'm not sure if it'll support USB.

If I get a PS/2 to COM converter, how will plug it in when the pins are bent....

The think is about bring it back is that it's not really pins, it's more of a pin pocket,, and it's split...so I can't connect the keyboard into it.Would soldering anoither port in be hard...

John HARE, you should register so you can start on the path to the funny farm.
1st of all, there are no pins on the PS2 connector.  The pins are on the keyboard/mouse plug.  There are no  keyboard port pins to get bent.  If the connector is damaged, it can be unsoldered and replaced.

2nd, if the BIOS does not support Legacy USB, a USB keyboard won't WORK. Quote

Solve : B/W VC loading screen ME/98 shows colour??

Answer»

I have a 1024Bit Trident TVGA9000 which, apparantly, can only show B/W.

The only time it has SHOWN colour is during the loading screen of both Windows 98SE and ME.

Why is this? it does not even show a coloured BIOS or post.

I am not looking to trouble shoot the videocard, but I am rather curious as to why it is showing such behaviour.

The monitor I am using is a 14" COMPAQ which has excellent colours.Well friend...try the following thing.

Now under the "Color Quality"..you can see that "Monochrome" is SELECTED from the drop down list. Press the drop down arrao and select "High Color 24-bit" and press apply. Thats alll...

Solve : usa built computer needs to run in europe?

Answer»

I have a dell PC brand new that I have BROUGHT to europe. can anyone give recommendations on change of power supply for both main and screen, as well as the speakers? Can the power supply simply be swapped out? And would a cord change AND voltage change be neccessary for the screen? I am in Greece and need a fairl detailed response as Ihave to TRANSLATE and my Greek isnt that good. Thanks.Greece is 220VAC 50Hz

Changing the computer should be quite easy:
1.  Move red button on back of power supply from 110 to 220.
2.  Obtain IEC power cord with proper plug for Greece.  The end that plugs into the computer is the same as the 120VAC power cord.

The montor may just need the same power cord.  Look on the back of the MONITOR for the nameplate.  It will show the voltage range, mostly likely 100-240VAC 50/60Hz

Look at power brick for speakers.  You may need a different one or an adapter.  If speakers are powered from monitor (some newer ones are), nothing else to do.
Some Power Supply Units are auto-switching. If yours has no switch, you will have to review the manual.

Solve : New System, Big Error?

Answer»

For about a month, month and a half my system worked fine. Then out of nowhere it started acting like it had picked up a virus. Programs crashed, I had popups, etc

I was unable to open Task Manager
I formatted my hard drive. After formatting and installing XP Home again, -AS SOON AS- WINDOWS started up, it said that it had recovered from a serious error and that it had 159 critical system errors and told me to get a registry fixer.

I obtained Registry Mechanic and ran it. It told me that I had a corrupted registry and that it WOULD fix it,.

It did little good. Programs still either crashed or refused to install at all citing numerous errors each time.

I tried running multiple spyware/virus scanning and removing utilities but each time they eaither detect nothing or detect a minor problem and tell me that they fix it but I am still having the same exact problems of programs crashing or not installing at all.

Registry mechaning still constantly detects corrupted registry files.

I have formatted multiple times and each time Windows installs, it tells me that there is a currupted registry and I still have the software crash/refusal to install problems

I run registry mechanic every so often and it always tells me I have errors and that it fixes the errors but still no IMPROVEMENT in my system.

Just today I opened the system up, removed the ram and CR2032 battery on the mobo and REPLACED them.

Since doing this, I tried to format again but my Windows CD is not autodetected when the system reboots even though I have the boot order set to boot from CD first

I am at my wits end. This is a brand new computer not even three months old. I am ready to try anything. Please, please, PLEASE, any advice would be greatly appreciatedReseat your RAM and see if it will boot.

Formatting a hard drive removes ALL the data from the disk so I don't believe you are reformatting it.

You are probably restoring it or something.

Get back to booting to the cdrom with the xp disk in.If you are convinced that you reformatted it, you probably did a quick format. Try doing a full format on all partitions and Hard Disk Drives connected.

Have you DONE the following:

3. Replaced the Power Supply Unit and tested it on another computer

What has lead to your computer not wanting to boot?thats one thing i havnt tried, replacing the power supply.

It requires a certain amount of Wattages.  < 350 Watts for yours. It must ALSO be of ATX form factor. Otherwise the connector will not fit.

ok so under 350 watts, and ATX. ok thanks a lot

Solve : Files corrupt when moving.?

Answer»

Hi guys
This ones got me stumped.

I'm running XP Home on a Vaio laptop.  I've got a 40GB Hitachi Hard Disk (NTFS) in a generic usb 2.0 enclosure.

When I move files between folders on the disk they become un-accessable.  I can copy to the disk (so there's no problem with the disk writing), I can access things and save them.  But as soon as I move files or folders in WinExplorer they become corrupt, can't open (access denied) or DELETE.

Edit: I can delete using command prompt or shift-del in WinExplorer.  Still can't read.

CHDISK doesn't report any errors and the Disk Management reports drive as healthy. I believe there is some problem with writing to the Table of Contents and therefore don't want to DEFRAG disk yet.

Now I've backed up what I can to another disk but have lost about 2 GB of stuff that I would like to KEEP. Anyone got any ideas about how to recover these files (the info should still be there), recommendations about utilities that might help, futher test I can run or worse case senario if formating will make the entire drive usable and SAFE again.

Go figure, and if anyone can figure it out better than me I would be eternally gratefulAre you using software for the external HDD that allows you to synchronize and encrypt?

I was trying to INSTALL a new harddrive when all my problems began, but no matter which one i CONNECT, I lose my cd's. thank you,JayI'm not an expert like some of the other folks on this site, but I have had enough problems of this nature to suggest that it might have to do with your connectivity. Read this, and check to see if you've hooked everything up properly. Then let us know:

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1444&page=10thanks but even if i just have 1 drive set as a master, the ninute iconnect it , i lose my cd'sAre either of your cd's on the same cable as the hard drive?no i have 2 cd's on 1 cable- my hd cable is plugged in next to my cd cable ofcourse, but the problem isn't untill i connect a hard driveWell now I need help....Have they been properly configured when it comes to Master/Slave Cable-select?

TRY replacing the IDE cables. They may be faulty.

Solve : Won't load windows.......can't access bios.?

Answer»

I've recently upgraded my computer after a lightning strike FRIED the mother board.  The computer is an HP 754n.  I installed a Asus P4S800-MX mother board, a P4 3ghz processor and upgraded the memory and graphics card.

I had to reload windows, then it was working fine.  But now, it won't go past the boot up screen where you access the bios.  It's frozen right before it would show the computer detecting the hard drive.  It won't let me access the bios at all.  I've tried resetting the CMOS, but that didn't do anything.  It's frozen right after it detects the plug and play bios extension v1.0A.

Any suggestions?!) What OS?
2)Does it freeze BEFORE giving you the option to enter set-up or AFTER? (If it's AFTER, then enter setup right before it freezes)
3)Do you hear any beeps? It's Windows XP home.

Not sure about when exactly it freezes, but I've even tried hitting Del to enter bios numerous times right after i hit the power button and I can't get in.

Don't hear any beeps, mother board sound isn't hooked up, cause I don't have a case speaker.  I have sound hooked up to the jack on the outside.  If it beeps, it's not coming out there. Is the cpu Heatsink and fan seated correctly. Take out and reseat making sure you use the right amount of compound and is the Heatsink fan spinning. Is the Ram seated properly, take out and reseat.Even if the computer was working good before, could the cpu and memory not be seated properly?

The cpu fan is running.  When you say Frozen do you mean its just stopped at this screen do you not get a blinking cursor. May of developed a fault. Fan may not be running properly causing heat build up. But lets try a few things to SEE. Disconnect your Hard Drive and other drives from the motherboard including there power leads. Now boot up tell me do you get any error message on screen hear any beeps and is the cursor blinking. allow a couple of minutes for the computer to detect these errors.

If you get Erros come back that say somthing like A: drive Error.=(floppy Drive) Primary HDD error=(Hard Drive) Then connect you floppy drive reboot and wait to see if the  Primary HDD Error pops up. If it still comes back A: drive error then you need to replace the floppy drive for a new on. If Primary HDD Error come up connect your Hard drive reboot and see if you get the meassage Primary HDD error. if you dont go on to do the same with your DVD CD Drive rebooting each time to see if you eliminate the error massages. if you do get the Primary HDD Error with your Hard drive attached then its your Hard drive. Let us know how you go on its always good to hear an udate as to what the problem was so that others can find out.It stops on the screen where you can enter bios.  I do get a blinking cursor at the end of the plug and play bios extension sentence, but can't do anything.

I disconnected all the drives and i get no error messages.

There is one beep right after I turn the computer on, right before the bios screen comes up.  It also did this before I disconnected everything.Your Bios is Award Bios am i Right?. You say you get one beep. if this is a short beep?. On this Bios, it means it has passed the post is it a single short beep?.

But ok you still having problems, now try pulling out all the cards in the pc and see if you hear diffrent beeps, some can be short others long. Now put your Graphic only back in see if any message on screen come up or if somthing has changed, like you hear different beeps or see Different errors on screen. Replace the cards one by one rebooting each time looking for changes. If you dont have any look at doing this. Can you Find a diffrent Graphics card to try. Maybe borrow one of a fried just to try.

ONLY TRY THIS IF THE ABOVE DOESNT WORK
If you still have no luck after trying another Graphic Card, there is one last thing you can do to see if its the Motherboard, Ram, Cpu, Heatsink Fan. That is to disconnect everything from the back of your computer, except for the power lead. Now disconnect all your drives, Hard Drives DVD the lot. Now take out all your cards Graphics sound the lot. Now reboot the computer so there is only the Motherboard Ram And cpu heatink and fan. Do you hear any beeps how many short or long. Let me know how this has gone. Also if it works.I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM ONLY NOW IT WONT TURN ON THE MONITOR.IT TRYS BUT CLICKS BACK OFF IN ABOUT 3 SECONDS.SWITHED MONITORS BUT SAME PROBLEM.NEVER COULD GET PASSED THE BIOS SDREEN BEFORE THATThe only card I have is a graphics card.  I removed that and with still all the other drives removed, it booted right to bios.  I tried a different graphics card and all I get is a blank screen.  Also sometimes, now, it will go to bios and sometimes all I get is a black screen.

I have noticed that when is doesn't go to bios, the keyboard lights will flash when I initially turn the computer on, then they will flash again and the light under the power button will go off and the computer will do nothing.

I've tried different times booting up with everything connected then with all but the HD connected.  Still sometimes it will go right to bios and sometimes it will do nothing.

It is Award Bios.  And now I get no beeps whether the bios comes up or not.  Also, during all my attempts with different stuff unplugged and plugged in, I get no errors.  It will either go right to bios or do nothing.

Could my problem be a bad motherboard??Its either your Motherboard, Ram, or cpu Heatsink and fan. Eliminate the Ram by trying in another computer, or asking a computer shop to test it. reseat your CPU Try a diffrent heatsink and Fan because the one you have may be at Fault, even though it is spinning i have seen this fault alot on computers. If the above things dont work then i suspect it has got to be your Motherboard. But check to see that nothing has fallen onto the Motherboard that is making it short. Get back let us know how you went on.Well, looks like I figured it out.  I replaced my ram with one that was in the fried motherboard.  Now the computer seems to work fine.  It's booting everytime.  The faulty ram is brand new, Corsair Value Select, PC3200, 2x512.  Has this ram been known to go bad?

I do have SOMETHING else I've noticed.  Sometimes it won't recognized the HD everytime.  It's the factory HD that came with the computer before I rebuilt it.  Could it be a bad HD or could the motherboard just not like it?Yes looks like we worked it out. Thankyou. Ram can go bad at anytime, I have had new Ram sold to me thats been bad. I havnt heard of any issues about the make of Ram apart from when Ram has gone bad, but thats just RAM can be working fine one day and the next its gone bad. I wouldnt worry about it.

As for the Hard Drive i presume you have checked your IDE cables are properly connected, If you have a spare one try that in its place. do you have set as Primary Master. I must admit im not a lover of Factory built computers and there Parts, I like to know what im putting in. Since you have got the computer booting up now might be a good idear to set the bios to default SETTINGS now. Give that drive abit more testing to see if it looks like its worth replacing. Like scan it for bad sectors.

Solve : scanner light?

Answer»

The light on my my HP Scanjet 5200C  will not shut off, even after three or four hours.  This has happened before.

How can I turn it off?

Thanks.Could you post back and write what is the light for on your SCANNER. Power or something else?I have made a couple of searches and have come up with the following: if there is no power switch on your model, it should turn off when the computer is off. Also, if your scanner light is on, don't worry, it's not a conventionnal light bulb, but a LED.

By the way, do you mean that the light stays on even when the computer is off?

It's the power light on the scanner and the hours that it stays on are after I have turned the computer off.  Scanner is HP Scanjet 5200C.

Thanks for checking some sources.  Any more up your sleeve?Seems to be a somewhat common problem with scanners that have no power switch. I'd suggest tring these:

1) Turn off all programs using your scanner VIA ctrl+alt+del. But beware, before doing this, write down everything you see and check all entries at http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php . Afterward, close the right ones and then turn off your computer to see if the light stays on.

2) If so, try reinstalling the drivers from the cd. By the way, this is an old scanner, works WELL but could still be updated, if you have the money.

I've had to deal with Hp's support... Good luck!I checked out that systems information list and to quote somebody famous, "It's all Greek to me."

Maybe I should just wait until it burns out and get a new scanner.

I UNDERSTAND your good luck wish with  HP.

Thanks for trying anyway.download the HP Lamp Controller Update for the HP ScanJet ..........go to their website..I went to HP's site and then to HP's scanner 5200C and then to scanner problems.

There as no mention of a lamp controller update, no mention of lamp controller at all but several to do with LAMPS, including changing the lamp mode from economy/energy star comliant to fast scan, and eliminating lamp warm-up time. No mention of a lamp that won't go off.

Also checked HP Scanner Series - Troubleshooting the HP Scanjet Scanners and no mention there, either.

I can't figure out why they just didn't put a power switch on the scanner.

So, I think I will go back to Plan A and when the light burns out I will get a new scanner.

Thanks so much for trying to help. I do appreciate it. Quote

...I can't figure out why they just didn't put a power switch on the scanner....

To save money.  HP removed power switches from many laser printers, too.

Solve : add microphone to Creative sound card?

Answer»

I downloaded Skype and installed it OK.  The Creative SB Live sound card has 4 jacks, 1 of which is the sound output, which works.  I have a microphone which came with my other Dell COMPUTER, but want to USE it with this Dell XPS-T500. The problem is: 1.  Which of the 3 remaining jacks to use  2.  How do I test it to see if it is ACTUALLY working?  RUNNING W2k with SP3, 128mb RAM. Thanks in advanceIf your plugs are color-coded, the microphone jack is typically colored red.  If not, there might be a picture of a mic next to the jack.  To test if it's working....  Go to the program that you need the microphone for and check if it works :-P  Haha, I'm sure there's a better way to test that, so wait for somebody else to post :-)

Solve : Speaker Setup Issues?

Answer»

I just bought a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS. I have Logitech Z640 speakers (5.1, in CASE anyone doesn't know). When I plug them into the card, I can get sound from the front RIGHT and left speakers, but nothing from the rear or center speakers. It doesn't appear to be a problem with my wiring, though I'd be willing to check it again. I have Orange (center/sub) in line out 3, Black (rear) in line out 2, and GREEN (front) in line out 1. I've tried plugging them into different places, but it doesn't help (unless I have black in 1, then rear works, but front doesn't, so I know my rear speakers at least work).
Searching the Logitech and Creative haven't given me any helpful information, nor has the rest of the internet.
I'll do anything I can to help anyone understand the problem or whatnot, and if I need to try stuff I already did,  I totally will try it... cuz ya know... It might work.
Any ideas would be apprecianted.First make sure you have an updated sound driver for your hardware, secound make sure your sound card can take 5:1 surround sound. 3. Go to audio properties and adjust your COMPUTER to let it know you hook up 5:1 speakerI've updated the driver and made sure it's been told that I have 5.1 speakers plugged in everywhere I possibly could. The card and all the documentation say it's a 7.1 card. Now I can hear from the rear speakers, but I can't get anything from the center speaker.

Solve : Switching hard drives and their data?

Hi. I want to transfer all data from an old 8gig Maxtor HD to a "newer" Western Digital 20gig HD and use that one as the master, the old one as the slave. How do I go on doing that? Do I need a particular software like Maxblast 3? As far as jumpers go, can I use the CS pins? Will the computer be able to use both HD? Thanks in advance. Quote

1. You allready seem to know the Master and Slave theory. You are aware that these settings are regulated by the jumpers on the back of the Hard Disk Drives? Instructions should be printed on top.

2. If you connect two Hard Disk Drives to one computer, you can easily transfer files.

3. Yes.

4. If they are connected properly, yes.

The answers to these questions may also depend on what operating system you are planning on installing and wheter you would like to keep using the older Hard Disk Drive's Operating System.WOW! Fast and efficient... Thought I just heard my girlfriend! LOL

The OS is 98SE, which I'll be keeping. (Already on the old HDD)

1)Is there an easy and fast way to transfer everything at once, like a "transfer all" option or key?

2)Do I have to format, partition or do anything else to the new HDD? It as already been used by someone. I also don't know what's on it. Should I check? Quote

WD DataLifeguard Tools v10 or v11 looks exactly the same as MaxBlast 4.   WD may require the WD software to perform the copy.

This is all done from bootable floppy.  Make one for DataLifeguard Tools and the other for MaxBlast 4.  When complete, computer will probably boot from Primary Master.

Remember, we are speaking Windows here.

Try following Computer_Commando's advice.

Unless you SUSPECT the person is involved in serious crimes, no.

You can safely reformat which is what you may have to do if there is an operating System installed on it to prevent your current Operating System from clashing.

Repartitioning depends entirely on the needs of the user(s).Alrighty then!

One last thing, will the WD and/or Max program do everything required for the HDD to work or will it just transfer the data?

Thanks. Quote

Transfer the data. The Hard Disk Drive will work the moment you connect it and power on the computer. Automated process more or less.

I am not familiar with WD or Maxblast, though. It may offer more than just file transfer. You should read the manual or consult Computer_Commando.

Ofcourse, reformarting and repartitioning has to be done by the user and so does maintenance such as DEFRAGMENTING. But I take it  you are familiar with doing so.

Sure am. I also know of fragmentation, the art of evening out the sectors of a HDD with a ten-pound mace-like object, but that's beside the subject...

Thanks for everything guys(?). Much appreciated. I'll get the rest from the manufacturer's site. Take care.Let us know if you run into additional problems. Always welcome.Hello guys. My computer doesn't allow me to place the drives as I want without removing most of the components, i.e. I can't easily access the HDD.

I'd like to know if I can place the drives in any position, regarding the ribbon cable, and use the master/slave jumpers settings instead of the CS? In other words, is the FIRST and second place relevant with the master/slave jumpers?

Plus, when I check the new HDD, set as a slave, with WD Datalifeguard, it's labeled as non bootable. Is this related to it being a slave?

Thanks in advance.Hello, Evans. You are definitely making your life harder! I know one best way to solve your problem, as I've already had similar problem. I had to add new HDD, instead of old one. So I was recommended to use True Image, this software creates clone of my old HDD. Then using True Image I make a bootable CD, due to great level compression it takes not much space. After that I took out old HDD and put my new one (it doesn't matter what position, but for sure, you'd better install only one new HDD, as anytime you can add slave one), switch it to master, and insert bootable CD. You'll get the perfect HDD with all data, apps and other stuff. It took me about 20-30 minutes to replace my HDD. I THINK you could follow up my experience.Great advice, but I was only wondering if the position on the ribbon cable is at all important when using master/slave jumpers setting. Thanks.
I'm not 100% sure on this subject, but I believe that the ribbon cables don't matter as long as you set the jumpers on your HDDs to master/slave.  They do matter when you're on cable select.

Good luck! :-) Quote
Great advice, but I was only wondering if the position on the ribbon cable is at all important when using master/slave jumpers setting. Thanks.

The last connector on the IDE/ATA ribbon cable should be Master. The middle connector Slave.

However, you can switch them around. Thanks for everything, guys. BTW, that WD Datalifeguard tool works really well, and it does PARTITIONS, formatting  and copies file by file or even make an exact copy, a bit like ghost or true image. Very useful.

Solve : Modem Mess???

Answer»

Hello All,
Can't seem to find an answer to my problem with mfgs. so here I is!
 I have an older CTX, AMD 300 processor w/ 160mb of ram.(128+32)
I had to install a new modem & ever since I have it's been puzzle time for this moderatly knowledgeable country computer clicker!
The modem is an AOpen FM56-SVV V.92. Shortly after installin' it slowed to a crawl on dialup to the ISP, & for some reason my sound, all my sound over my system quit working. I can put in a cd & it will play, & when I clik my mouse the audible clik will "hang" & GO into overdrive.
Ive been to their website with no help, & can not find any conflicts in the Device Mngr.
ANY ideas will be greatly appreciated.
                                Thanks!
Oh, forgot to mention, if I completly remove the modem from the tower, the I have sound.Connect  the lan cable via the pc to the main phone box....This is an internal dial-up modem?

Have you installed the drivers properly?

Have you scanned for viruses, Trojan HORSES and Spyware?O.K.,
I tried the line to the box on the outside...no difference.
Raptor... Yes its an internal modem & the drivers are installed correctly.I've checked for updates too.
No viruses or worms detected, I even did a complete reinstall of Win2000 Pro. just to be sure my anti-virus didn't miss something. I have the sp4 loaded for 2000 also.
If the sound didn't work with the modem took out I would think  the sound card was bad but this has me buffaloed.
Thanks to both of yuns' for the ideas! Quote

... Oh, forgot to mention, if I completly remove the modem from the tower, the I have sound.

I see this from time to time.
1ST try removing the old modem configuration from the Control Panel.  If no help, then try the modem in a different slot.
Already tried that too. I completly removed the old modem befor installing the new one, & I have moved the new one to a couple of diffrent slots .
Something I have noticed is that the com port for the modem in its properties window is com3, but when I go to the device mgr & look under ports its only lists com1 . I don't even know what uses that port. Quote
...Already tried that too. I completly removed the old modem befor installing the new one....

I don't mean the physical modem.   Remove the old modem drivers, configuration, etc.  Under Control Panel---Phone and Modem Options---Modems.  See if old modem is still listed.  If it is, delete it.

Com ports 1 & 2 are physical (real), ports 3,4,5,etc are virtual.  Mine is on Com5.
Thanks for the info on the ports, like I said I'm still learnin'. I meant that I removed ALL the modem, files, drivers all the works.
This morning I even ran a new phone line in the house to make sure that wasn't the problem...but no change.Nothing else left to do.  New modem must be defective.  Never asked, but why did you have to replace the original? Quote
Shortly after installin' it slowed to a crawl on dialup to the ISP, & for some reason my sound, all my sound over my system quit working.

So it worked OK for a while?
Have you scanned?
Is your computer 100% free of bugs?Sorry I haven't replied sooner but had technical problems.
Commando, I had to replace the old one cause it died.
Cause...unknown. But it may have been got during a storm. I now have the modem connected thru a surge protector.
I removed win 2000, did a format of the harddrive,& reinstalled 2000 with the problem STILL existing. I reoved 2000 again, reformatted & installed 98SE & everything works almost fine. The modem connectes in about 20sec. now & have all my sound back.
I really want to use 2000, any other ideas as to why it wouldn't work before. Yes I'm sure I was installing the right drivers for the program at the time. There's a lot of different drivers for this modem:
FM56-SVV
Thanks Again!
I had gone to their site before & downloaded one driver, though now I'm not sure which one it was, but I never ran across that many.
I had used the ones on the cd, which are tha same for 2ooo, XP, & ME. But when I get time I'll reload 2000 & try some of those you found. Be awhile though, we just got a house & are preparing to move. I'll let ya know how it went.
Appreciate it!! Maybe the isp cut your connection..........due to you moving.Na,
We live in a SMALL town.....BUT it ain't that small!

Solve : SOUND CARD HELP! - NO SOUND AT ALL?

Answer»

I have absolutely no sound! I've got windows 2000, and the little yellow speaker icon that's supposed to be in the system tray in the bottom right hand corner, isn't there at all...I have no idea what kind of sound card I have, or who the manufacturer is. Can someone please, PLEASE help me with this problem? You need to go into device manager to see what sound card you have. In windows 2000 and xp you right click on my computer on the desktop, goto MANAGE and left click, then left Device manager. Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and ME users enter the Windows device manager by clicking Start, Settings, CONTROL Panel, System icon, and finally clicking the Device Manager tab.

Under Sound video and game controllers click the little left plus. The name of your card will be in there. Now is there any yellow question marks that you see in any of the lists. We need to KNOW this before anyone can go any further. And what is the name of the Sound card in that list.

What windows do you use and a few specs about your pc would be good like Motherboard. There are several things listed under the sound, video etc. list:
-Audio codecs
-Creative AWE64 Gold Wavetable MIDI (Awe32 compatible) (WDM) < not sure about this one b/c I think it was something my sister played around with or installed...there is also a yellow circle w/ black exclamation mark next to it
-Legacy Audio Drives
-Legacy Video capture devices
-Media control devices
-video codecs

and I am on Win 2000Ok you need to reinstall the driver go here and DOWNLOAD it. http://list.driverguide.com/list/company258/page10/

Make sure you select sound icon and download the right Windows version....> Windows 2000.If you get asked....
Username=drivers
Password=all
BTW, most xp drivers WORK on w2k.Hey guys,  I did what you said, and restarted the computer and all that, but there was still no yellow icon in the system tray or any sound. The windows troubleshooter suggested that I uninstall and reinstall the hardware, which I did...except now on the device manager it says that the sound card is "Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM)" - not sure what to do now :-/ ...also on my device manager, there is a yellow questions mark next to "PCI simple communications controller" under "other devices" - maybe that could have something to do with the problem as well?Type dxdiag and test for sound........make sure your speakers/headphones are connected......via the jack plug at the tower/desktop/laptop.....and are on..via the switch/mains adapter..........

Solve : Hard Disk Re-format Gone Wrong HELP!!?

Answer»

I recently reformated the hard drive in a 5 year old e-machines computer.  I thought I did.  I used the DOS format command and it seemed to go through the WHOLE process.  I am RUNNING windows 98ME.

I used the disc that came with the computer (which includes windows) and re-installed everything clean.  The only problem is, when I turn the thing back on it seems to have some old SOFTWARE remaining on it.  I looked at the properties of the software and it says that it was installed in 2000.  I know it didn't originally come on the computer.

How could a hard drive format miss anything?  I thought everything would be wiped clean.  I am also having error messages pop up when I access windows explorer and some other programs.  For example:  MSHTML.DLL keeps causing erros (all of the problems are related to .DLL files).  I really would appreciate it if someone could help me out.  Thank you.
WELL first you only need to post once.....someone will get to you eventually. Well if you want to refix your computer i suggest rereformat * note that is not a word. Get a floppy and go to http://www.killdisk.com and download the free version and reformat then go to http://bootdisk.com and get a startup disk. preferbally windows98se since i know how to use it. When you finish erasing using your startup disk use these 2 commands fdisk.exe and then Format C: this will partion your drive and convert it to FAT32Sorry for the double post, "operator error".  I'll give what you said a try.  Thanks for the help.
To clear up this post is it WIN98? or winme.......windows mehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/267288/

JC

SATA only if your mainboard SUPPORTS it.

IDE (ATA) is the most common interface. However, you can only connect 4 IDE devices to one motherboard.

ATAPI means that it is build according to certain standards.

Solve : What's the best 3d video card for Win 98SE??

Answer»

Hello, I have a system that was put together by a friend.  It is an Intel Penium 2 MMX, 350 MHz, with WINDOWS 98SE.  I have 128 MB RAM.  It has a S3 Trio 3d (365/366) video card, which for writing and simple purposes is great, but for the newer 3d games, stinks!  It hangs up and is very slow. .
I am looking for a newer 3d video graphics card, but I don't know what will work with my system.  I'm afraid the newest technology is too fast for my computer.  Their are no updates or support for S3 products to speak of, and I'm on a limited budget.  Can anyone suggest a good quality card for my money, that will work with what I have?  Any suggestions would be appreciated. Actually my brother has the same kind of computer Windows 98SE 350mhz Pentium II and 64 MB Ram. I don'think you should use a Pentium II 350mhz for games... I think it will lag... badly might I add. But if you want it for games any 64MB video card should do. And MAKE sure you update your directX driver to 9.0c.. it helps with images. Or update the video card driver that really helps.Thank you for your input.
I have the most current DirectX 9.0, and there are no UPDATED driver files for the S3 Trio 3D Video cards, I've looked.  I've been to the manufacturers site, and found nothing, and I'm not the only one who's tried to find drivers for this card.  It's just out-dated.  I have 128 MB RAM, and it plays games alright, I'm not looking at Doom or Flight simulators, just 3D family type games.  I found some that use OpenGL, and my card is too old to even have it.  So what 64MB card is best for the money?  I've heard Voodoo is good, GeForce, and Radeon, but which is best for an older system?   :- Honestly, look on ebay for an older radeon 8000 series card or even older. I wouldnt pay too much for a card, nomore than 10-15 bucks. A faster card will not really help you much because your processor is not fast ENOUGH. Also depends which type of graphics slot you have. but for the newer 3d games

Solve : USB MEMORY STICKS????

Answer»

Looking at purchasing a USB memory stick.. but after checking out whats on OFFER I'm not sure which is best.

I'm gonna get a 1GB but  there's a few options of which type of stick to buy?

and I currently run WINDOWS 98 on an old SYSTEM which i can only assume has  usb port 1.1 how can i tell if it is this?and any recommendations on which one to buy??

ThanksIf you're running an old system then check to make sure it has got usb ports.Any of the usb keys out there will do it will just move the info SLOWER than usb 2.0Just becuase the stick says USB 2.0, it will adjust for a slower port... Make sure that (1) You have a USB port  and (2) Your memory stick is compatible with Windows 98 ... Also, may I ask why you need 1 gig? Will you be transferring large files?

Solve : My CD-RW doesn't recognize blank disks anymore!?

Answer»

over a couple of months ago my ATAPI CD-R/RW 8x4x32 stopped recognizing recordable disks and instead just gives the "insert disk into drive" message. I have tried 4 different brands and am unable to burn any CD's whatsoever.I would APPRECIATE it if someone could help me with this problem. Can it read a previously burnt CD ?Can you also TELL us what Operating system you are using and what burning software you use. This helps us narrow the problem down moreIt can't read BRUNT CD's either. Also i'm running Windows Xp and the software i was using was Acoustica CD burner software before the free trial ran out.The CD player/recorder isn't seeing the CDs. Try using a CD player cleaning kit (Any music or computer shop will have one) first to see if the OPTICAL reader has dirt on the lens

Solve : Advice On Buying a video card?

Answer»

I've decided to upgrade my video card, on a limited budget. We're not serious gamers (although my teenaged son might beg to differ on that point) but do run MOH Pacific Assault and Battlefield 2 from TIME to time.

A couple of questions, because I find I'm suffering from some information overload here:

1.  I've decided to go with a Radeon card, but of course there are dozens of card manufacturers marketing this chipset. How important is the manufacturer? (I'm considering VisionTek).

2.  Between the Radeon 9250 and 9550, is there enough of a difference in the 9550 to justify the higher price?

3.  Would either of these cards be a sound choice?I use the 9550 and it runs BF2 ok but most of the graphics settings are on low.

I've never had any serious probs with the 9550. Thanks, jowser - that's a good start. Anyone else have an opinion on my other questions?  9550 is agp and 9250 is pci and they are the same price although I am not SURE if the 9250 is pci express or standard pci but in ONE of your other post you were asking about your agp speed so go ahead and get the 9550. Here are the specs
http://shop.ati.com/searchresults.asp?search_id=8Thank you, wrwss. Actually the 9250 comes AGP or PCI, while the 9550 comes only AGP, from what I can tell. I was able to determine that my AGP bus speed is 8x so no worries there.

My original questions are still the ones I was hoping to get some feedback on - I just wanted to find out what others more knowledgable than I thought about this class of card. And ALSO if it mattered what company manufactured it.Well from my experience, I have never had any trouble with radeon and now my new Dell came with radeon x800 pci express graphics and it is nice. There are alot of makers out there USING the ati technology and they are all pretty much the same in specs and price so if you see one that grabs your attention more than another then take it.That's what I was hoping to hear. I'll take that advice, wrwss, and go with the 9550. Thanks.

Solve : Record Audio from TV/VCR to Computer?

Answer»

Hello. I was wondering how I can TRANSFER the audio from the TV/VCR to my computer. I WANT the audio to be crisp and clear, so using a standard computer microphone would not work.

There must be some kind of WIRE to connect from the TV to the computer in order to get the audio to have the same quality as it does on the VHS.

Someone told me to use a Y Cable. So I bought one on EBAY and connected the black piece to the Line In part in the back of my computer and I connected the RED and white to the TV. Nothing ever recorded even when I switched the recording to Line In.

Does anyone know how to do this?tv card or belkin video bus..is easier....

Solve : Please help with questions about CD-RW Drive?

Answer»

I BURN a lot of cd's and the cd-rw DRIVE on my computer was too slow.  It says it's 16*10*32.  Today I BOUGHT an external CD-RW drive that says it's 52*32*52.  The first error message I got was when I plugged the USB cable in.  It said I need to add a Hi-Speed USB HOST controller.  How do I do that?  When I tried to burn a cd with it, an error message came up when I tried to burn it at 52x.  I then tried to go lower and the same error message kept coming up until I tried it at 16x.  What do I have to do to burn a cd at higher speeds?  Please help!
ThanksInformation about the Universal Serial BUSOk, thanks for the information on the USB, but because I am totally computer illiterate, I have no idea what I was reading.  I know I have TWO places on the front of my computer for USB's and I have used them for transferring songs to my MP3 player, but I do not know if they are Hi-Speed or not.  When I go into Device Manager, it says the USB's I have are "Intel 82801 BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller-2442, and the other says 2444)  Does this help any?  Windows XP will warn you if they are not USB 2.0. It will tell you that the drive is capable of faster transmission.

You should refer to the mainboard manual. It can tell you what type of USB ports are there for use.

Solve : Mouse Error Message Blocking Everything Else?

Answer»

try ctrl+alt+del on the keyboard........is the num lock  light lit up.... QUOTE

"on reboot hold down the del key or whatever key it is to  to acccess the bios"

I can't USE the keyboard to do this...

Are you by any chance connecting the PS/2 keyboard connector to that of the PS/2 mouse connector?

You should be able to use the keyboard outside of Windows XP (Before it loads, for example). If you can not do this, then either the keyboard is defunct or you are not connecting it properly.

As for the mouse; a mouse error should only be shown once Windows is loaded. There will be a notification that you are currently not using a mouse and that you now have a chance to connect one.

Quote
If I go get a different mouse/keyboard wouuld they work?

Have you tried using a very basic two button PS/2 or COM mouse and PS/2 keyboard without extra functions?

I would advise you to connect a mouse that has:

  • Only two buttons
  • COM connector
  • Mouseball

If this works, you can REMOVE all Logitech keyboard and PS/2 mouse related entries from the device manager.

COM mice are less than 5 dollars and may even be given away for free.i have no keyboard usage...PS2 mouse does not work. ctrl+alt+del isn't a possibility...num lock light nor caps lock light are on.  Mouse and keyboard are both PS2 now and are plugged in correctly.  why would uninstalling / system restore fry things so? Quote
why would uninstalling / system restore fry things so?

You may have removed/corrupted/damaged important files whilst doing so.

You did not READ all of what I wrote, please do so now.If you have no num lock light.....on boot up this issue lies with the graphics card...are you plugging the mouse/keyboard to the correct ports in the back of the tower? "You should be able to use the keyboard outside of Windows XP (Before it loads, for example). If you can not do this, then either the keyboard is defunct or you are not connecting it properly.  "

The only thing that I can do on the keyboard outside of XP is press the del key before XP loads.  It does not take me to the BIOS, it just beeps, and then proceeds to load XP.

"As for the mouse; a mouse error should only be shown once Windows is loaded. There will be a notification that you are currently not using a mouse and that you now have a chance to connect one.  "

There isn't a mouse error really...it doesn't tell me that I am or am not using a mouse.  It just gives the EM_EXEC error and the MFC30.DLL error telling me to reinstall.

"Have you tried using a very basic two button PS/2 or COM mouse and PS/2 keyboard without extra functions? "

At the moment, it can not detect basic PS/2 mouse or keyboard either.
Both the mouse and the keyboard are plugged into the correct places on the tower.  That is not the issue.

If the uninstall removed / damaged important files, how do i fix that?Ask dell>>>>>>>>>>>>Try using a COM mouse to remove all mouse and keyboard related drivers/entries from Windows. What is a COM mouse?A com mouse is a serial mouse (connects to a serial port). Make sure your Logitech keyboard and mouse are NOT connected. Connect a plain jane mouse and keyboard and attempt to boot to safe mode. If you get into safe mode, go into the system CONFIGURATION utility and look under startup items. This is normally where Em_Exec loads from. Uncheck it and click Apply. Reboot.I talked to Dell and it looks like I have to start from my Windows XP disc and lose important information in order to fix this.  If I hit F2 upon start up it will go to the screen, but hitting F8 to get into safe mode doesn't work.  Any other ideas since the keyboard does work a bit (F2 working)?? You may first wish to do as Dummy2k and I have said.

Connect a COM mouse. Obtain them at any computer store/dump or garage sale.Graphics card........faulty or has the drivers.......so...i can't find a serial port mouse

but i did try repairing XP from the CD and although i got that to work, i am still getting the error messages..

ahhhh...

what happens if i completely reinstall instead of just repairing?I would buy a new hard drive......and transfer the files to it....rather than lose files!.....imaho...

Or use the dell recovery disk and reload the graphics drivers///or it may have the motherboard drivers on the disk!?....Some do some dont!

Solve : vid card help?

Answer»

my b-day passed about 4 days ago and i recieved a sony vaio vgc-rb30 as a GIFT. it didn't come with a video card installed, so i'm looking for one to install. problem is that it doesn't have an agp SLOT but uses a pci express x16 slot. i'm not to familiar with that kind of slot, but its to my understanding that its a new technology. i just wanna make sure i select the right kind of vid card in my $70 budget, the cheapest i found in a local store was $130, so i turned to tigerdirect.

i came across this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1243209&Tab=0&NoMapp=0

its well in my price range and has a nice amount of memory on it. i'm a gamer, but i dont consider myself to be a hardcore gamer that plays for 5 hours a day but play atleast an hour every 1 or 2 days. but yea, just curious if that card would be adequate....... if not i would love some suggestions.

heres my pc specs, click on marketing specifications. (pdf)

http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=VGCRB30I'm surprised the onboard video isn't good enough for you? Is it causing a problem?
Either way I'd GIVE it another 512Mb of RAM.
The card looks OK.well yea i was thinking i would be fine on the integrated video source too, but the picture is pretty choppy. it didnt satisfy me at all, plus my fps was pretty low. What game, and what are the requirements?counter strike 1.6 and source, and soon to be battlefield 2. i just wanna pull the best out of my pc so i can get it ready for bf2.Try ordering your videocard online and skip the middle man in the store.

Solve : My computer DOESN'T detect my USB ports!?

My USB ports (all 5 of them) have been giving me a lot of trouble lately....I plug in my devices (my digi cam, printer, keyboard, etc....) and they simply do not WORK, meaning that the computer cannot detect them. The USB ports are all PLUGGED in correctly, so this could possibly be a PROBLEM with my computer. Please help, I need this fixed ASAP!

--LisaI want you to take a deep breath, then do the following:

Plug your devices in to another PC (borrow one if you have to) and see if they work. The odds of it being the devices are not good, but this is one way to rule that out. we need to be sure it is a computer problem, not a device problem before we begin doing STUFF to your computer, OKAY?

Solve : Requirements for USB 2.0?

Answer»

I recently purchased a USB 2.0 PCI Card made by BELKIN. The box says that the card requires PCI 2.1.

My computer is quite old, 1998, so I expect that it's motherboard may not be PCI 2.1 compliant.

The card works but only at usb 1.1 speed (eg 1.5 MBs)
How can I confirm that my motherboard isn't PCI 2.1?
Do all USB 2.0 ports require PCI 2.1?? If so, WHY!!??

I have Win XP SP1 INSTALLED, and the card is reconised as being USB 2.0.I have now been able to confirm the following:

By Motherboard is PCI 2.10
By Windows version (XP SP1) is USB 2.0 compatable
The USB PCI card I installed is USB 2.0
The device I am connecting is USB 2.0 compatable
Windows reconises both the USB port and the device as USB 2.0, but still connects them at USB 1.1 speed.

This is so, so, so infuriating.
I don't think I'm going to be able to fix this, but I hope I'm wrong.Go to the device manager and see if there are any error codes.Everything looks ok under device manager, the card contains 3 ports and 3 controllers. One controller is a high speed (USB 2.0) one and is listed under "Belkin USB 2.0 High Speed Host Controller" this controls all 3 ports.

There are also 2 additional controllers both of which are USB 1.1. One of these controls 2 of the ports on the card, and the other controller controls the remaining port. This is a bit weird I know, but it's all correct.

I also have usb 1.1 or 1.0 controller on my motherboard which has 2 ports.

I scanned my system using "Sandra Lite" and this is what it told me:

General Information
Controller : Belkin USB 2.0 High Speed Host Controller

Root Hub
Compound Device : No
Hub Is Bus Powered : No
Power Switching : Gang-switched
Over-current Protection : Global
Number of Ports : 3

Root Hub: USB Port 1
Status : Device Connected
Device Connected to Port : USB Mass Storage Device
OEM Device Name : Lexar Media, Inc. (A400)
Device Version : 20.00
Device ID : VEN_05DC, DEV_A400, PRT_00
USB Version : 2.00
Speed : Full (12Mbps)
Configuration Settings : 1
Open Pipes : 2
Transfer Type : Bulk
Data Packet Size : 64 byte(s)

Root Hub: USB Port 2
Status : No Device Connected

Root Hub: USB Port 3
Status : No Device Connected

As you can see I am connecting a USB 2.0 device to a USB 2.0 port but the connection speed is 12Mbps.

HELP!!

"I know now why you cry, but it is something I can never do"Is this the device?
No, that's not it.

This is it:

I don't think it's the device that's causing the problem, I'm also getting the same problem with my other USB 2.0 device. It appears that all Belkin USB 2.0 cards have drivers, even for WinXP.  Driver version should say:  2.1.10

USB 2.0 PCI Card DriversThanks for the sugestion of driver updates. I wish I could say it solved the problem, but it didn't.

The new driver installed (I checked the version number) but it has made little difference.

I don't think I'll be able to fix this now, I just have no idea where the problem is coming from. Prehaps my system has an inherent incapability to function at USB 2.0 speeds, who knows. I don't normally like to give up on computer problems but I think I'll just have to live with slow USB.

I'll check back here a few times to see if there are any more SUGGESTIONS and then I'm giving up.

Sometimes I think computers are just to complicated, I prefer simpler thinks like fixing bikes or playing Sudoku.

One thing left to try.  Change card to different PCI slot.
PCI Slot change didn't help.
I've been fiddling with my diagnostic program again, this is what I came up with:

PCI Bus(es) on Hub 1
Version : 2.10
Number of Bridges : 1
PCI Bus 0 : PCI (33MHz)
Multiplier : 1/3x

USB Controller 1
Model : Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4/E/M USB Controller
Version : 1.10
Interface : UHCI
Channels : 2

Legacy Emulation Enabled : No

USB Controller 2
Model : Belkin Research and Development Labs uPD720101 USB OpenHCI Controller
Version : 1.00
Interface : OHCI
Channels : 2
Supported Speed(s) : Low (1.5Mbps) Full (12Mbps)
Legacy Emulation Enabled : No

USB Controller 3
Model : Belkin Research and Development Labs uPD720101 USB OpenHCI Controller
Version : 1.00
Interface : OHCI
Channels : 1
Supported Speed(s) : Low (1.5Mbps) Full (12Mbps)
Legacy Emulation Enabled : Yes

USB Controller 4
Model : Belkin Research and Development Labs uPD720101 USB 2.0 EHCI Controller (Version 1.0)
Version : 2.00
Specification : 1.00
Interface : EHCI
Channels : 3
Companion Controllers : 2
Supported Speed(s) : Low (1.5Mbps) Full (12Mbps) High (480Mbps)
Addressing Support : 32-bit
Legacy Emulation Enabled : No

I don't really know what all this means but it seems my Front SIDE Bus is 100MHz and my PCI bus is 33MHz.
Are this figures normal? Can USB 2.0 work at this spec?

As you can see my USB 2.0 controller lists 480Mbps as a possible speed, but something is holding it back. Quite what that something might be is proving difficult to find out.

I'm going to try the card in my old computer tomorrow and see if it works in that.
I was fully expecting the card to work in my older computer, but no, it didn't. I got the same problem, only USB 1.1 speed was available. My other computer is running a completely different OS (win 98 SE) so I think I can rule out OS issues.

I think  the problem must be one of the following:

There is a minor defect wth the card.

I'm setting the card up wrong.

Both my USB 2.0 devices aren't really USB 2.0.

The first and third option seem unlikely, but then again so does the second.

I wish I had kept my receipt........

I'm certainly going to steer clear of Belkin products in future, just in case it's their fault. Quote

1.  I think so.
2.  You tried the latest drivers.
3.  I know the JumpDrive is 2.0, I looked it up.
4.  Never had a problem with Belkin in the past.  MAYBE they've changed manufacturers and quality is down.

I've got an old computer and my No-Name PCI USB 2.0 card works just fine with my Lexar JumpDrive and my no-name 2.5 hard disk drive.

Belkin has a good warranty and will probably exchange for a new one.

Is your monitor ok? Try another one just in case.
1) TAKE your graphics card out then turn on your PC. If it comes on then its your graphics card. Try LOOKING up some stuff that may cause that

2) If it still dont come on with the graphic card out then try a different Monitor.

3) If another monitor don't work. Get a professional Technician or try it yourself. Open the case and there is a jumper by a little battery called the CMOS Battery. Switch the jumper over to the other side of the pins, it should be 3 pins, and the jumper is over TWO of them, move it to the other two pins for about 10 minutes, Then try.

4) If that dont work it may be a problem with your PCI or AGP slot, go to the MANUFACTOR of the motherboard and look for other methods or get a new computer.Does your pc power up, is the heatsink fan inside your computer spinning. Do you hear any beeps at start up or see any messages at all on screen. Is your screen completely blank. Is your monitor light on. Is the monitor cable properly attached at the back.
