Solve : Solid-State Hard drives?

just an update; turns out the anti-bogeyman software is a scam. Now I've GOT over 12 bogeymen in my CLOSET, and not one of them knows how to tie their shoes. So every MORNING, I have to tie their shoes so they can go to work.

Did I mention they are all wearing scuba gear all the time for some reason?

You will most likely have to reactive it.

Or it MAY not start at all.

If you have to reinstall Windows XP, you will only loose the files you didn't move to another partition. If you didn't partition at all, well you're screwed like a goat.

Solve : what SCSI card for a Ultra 160 SCSI drive??

Answer»

Hello,

I've been struggling with a SCSI drive all morning and would really appreciate some help if ANYONE can offer any!

I currently have an "Iwill 2930U+" SCSI controller and an ASUS P2B Motherboard. This SETUP worked fine for my previous SCSI drive (an IBM DCAS-34330 4330MB) but my system will not recognize my new drive (a FUJITSU MAN3367MP Ultra 160 SCSI 68 pin Drive).

I have tried various jumper settings and am wondering if maybe it’s the SCSI controller?

Do you know what sort of SCSI card I would NEED to get this drive WORKING?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

Solve : Looking to buy a WD1000JB HD for data recovery?

Answer»

My WESTERN Digitial WD1000JB drive WENT up.  I sent it to a data recovery place and they were SUCCESSFUL in getting some but not alll data off of the bad drive.  With additonal parts from a like drive, they felt they could GET more data from this drive.  I am looking to buy a WD1000JB-32CWEO (Model) drive that was built with a MONTH or so of 1/28/2002 and has a DCM number of DREABT2CB.  Anyone know how to try to find such a drive?

Solve : IBM Thinkpad Reseting Keyboard Cable?

Answer»

Okay guys, i'm a IBM ThinkPad junky! EVEN though I do own some gaming machines, I do still turn to my OLD IBM. Now recently the Trackpoint mouse has gone out of wack, and now the bios says I have a Error00311, which is a keyboard error and is resolved by reseting the keyboard cable. NOW! I've TAKEN the keyboard off the COMPUTER, and disconnected the keboard that is attached to the plugs right below the LCD monitor, i'm wondering, all I need to do is un-plug and re-plug in the cable that connects the keboard to the physical computer?

Thanks guys!
Where did you find the definition of that error code?

Solve : My computer just will not start...?!?

Answer»

When I TURN on my computer, it begins to boot and everything but then the screen goes black after only a few seconds. The monitor doesn't turn off, a display just doesn't show up. Likewise, the computer doesn't turn off either but keeps running. It is as if nothing is wrong except that the screen is completely black.

I know the monitor is CAPABLE of producing a display because when I turn it on, you can see the first boot-up display. I can press DEL and enter setup and toggle through all the settings there but I don't know what I'm doing. But once I exit this setup and allow the computer to boot up to enter windows, the screen goes blank and that's about it.

Up until this, my computer was acting a little strange. It was a little bit slow (but nothing ridiculous) and when I had several programs running, it would start this terrible ANNOYING alarm sound until I SHUT it off. I am pretty sure it was set to make the alarm when the temperature inside reached 120 degrees. So it was overheating for some reason.

Well, anyways, can someone offer any suggestions? Does anyone know of something I can do once I'm in the "setup" section before it boots up?Does it not shut down during the BIOS?

This may indicate a software problem. What have you done prior to the incident?

Quote

and when I had several programs running, it would start this terrible annoying alarm sound until I shut it off.

Are the fans still working? What are your system temperatures?try booting the computer with a diskI opened it up and all the fans appear to be working.  There isn't a build up of dust or anything from what I can see.  When I was in (BIOS mode?) I checked the temp and it was about 105 F upon start up.  I don't know if that is high or not for a computer.

Once it's in this BIOS mode it seems fine.  But once I leave, the screen is blank.

As for the DISK, what kind should I try?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q155053/ Quote

Reseat the ram, then try again. If that doesn't WORK, and you have more than ONE RAM stick in your machine, remove one stick at a time then reboot, and see if you can isolate the faulty bank. Thanks!

Not sure what you mean by transfering information, is it for connecting a modem, check your MoBo to see if there is a comport connection if so  you can BUY the serial port fitting and it is eassy to fit. Or you may be to connect the modem with a USB cable. By the way the serial port can be got from any computer that's not too old.
If the mainboard is capable of a serial connection, you can buy a serial port bracket or OBTAIN one second handed.

Refer to the mainboard manual to see if it has the required connections.

What exactly do you need a 5.1 surround sound set for when you have a COMPUTER that is DESIGNED to travel with you?

If your laptop has a line-out port, it will be able to support speakers. This line out port may be green, or it may be black. But it will most likely be accompanied by an icon that represents a speaker.

The SOUNDCARD may not support  5.1 surround sound.

but if you use the 2 mic slots in the back and a usb one you can have 3.

Solve : I think I broke my CPU?

Answer»

I have (had?) a Dell SmartStep 250N laptop.

Had two problems with it:

1) It overheated, and

2) Something wrong with the mobo, when I booted, I had to press power and then Ctrl+Alt+Del. (When I pressed power, the green lights would come on, and then shut off. While they were on, if I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, we'd start cooking)

So:

To fix the overheating, I took it apart to blow it clean.

When I took the screws out of the heat sink, the heat sink stuck a little.

When I pulled the heat sink up, the CPU came with it. (A P4)

So I (carefully) popped the CPU off the heat sink, put everything back, and tried to reboot.

Nothing. (Well, the COOLING fan comes on)

Even when I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del.

When I power up, I DON'T get that brief green light showing that it's gonna try, but fail.

So, I'm GUESSING this is a CPU issue.

It doesn't LOOK damaged  - that is, all the pins are nice and straight.

Static-free environment....

Does a P4 "snap" in, or does it gently rest?

Is there another way to easily test this?

================================

If I can't recover, I do have info on the HD I need to retrieve (couldn't do a full BACKUP without overheating, shitting down... Hence the heatsink cleaning project).

Any thoughts on how to pull info off a laptop's HD? I have access to a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, but no access to any kind of tower computer. (Without renting one!)

Thanks,

Look for a lever to lift up on the side of the socket.

You mean, as in, once it's sitting correctly, a little lever will snap up?

Yikes, sure didn't see that...

Dell™ SmartStep™ 200N and 250N; Microprocessor Thermal-Cooling Assembly and Microprocessor ModuleLifting the lever up will release the cpu from the socket, pushing it back down (flush) will lock the cpu into the socket. Thanks, Commando... The picture in that link explains what Fed was talking about.

Now....

That lever didn't pop UP when the CPU came out!!!!!!! So....

Oh, well, I will try tomorrow.

Trying not to obsess! Lay in bed until 2:30 coming up with contingency after contingency after contingency!!

Here's one thought:

1) Pull the hard drive out of my Dell SmartStep
2) Plug the hard drive into my Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop
3) Boot the Inspiron off CD (right? Different processor, etc.)
4) Back up the hard drive to an outside source
5) Shut down the Inspiron and put its hard drive back in.

That should work, right?

PLEASE point out any flaws to my thinking BEFORE I screw up ANOTHER machine!!!!

Or, is there a way to take the hard drive out of my Smart Step and mount it as an external drive to my Inspiron? Is there a USB interface or something? That way I can just copy the subdirectories I need!

Thanks,

and Thanks again! Quote
...That lever didn't pop UP when the CPU came out!!!!!!! ...

It's not supposed to.  The CPU is locked-in and can only be removed when you lift the lever.  Conversely, CPU can only be inserted when lever is lifted.  It's called a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket.

Assemble it according to instructions and it will probably operate properly.
...That lever didn't pop UP when the CPU came out!!!!!!! ...

It's not supposed to.  The CPU is locked-in and can only be removed when you lift the lever.

Which is what has me worried. If the CPU is only supposed to come out when the lever is up... And the CPU did come up, and the lever was down... Did I break something along the way?

Tomorrow, I'll lift the lever, put in the CPU, put the lever down, and pray like heck!

Sorry to be such a mo-ron... I've never really messed around in the guts of a laptop, and it all seems soooo MUCH more delicate than the big towers I used to tear down for fun at work. (Well, to piss off the IT guys, anyway).

It's kind of like when I stopped working on early 60's Fords and bought an 87 Vette... Didn't recognize a THING under the hood.

Anyway, here's hoping it works!

Solve : Error message regarding BIOS?

Answer»

Hello everyone:
I am new to this forum and I am not a hardware person by any means so I hope this question is not so stupid to some of you.
A HP Pavilion 8665C with windows 2000 had this error message: ACPI not "compliant". Contact BIOS vendor.
The computer just sits there and don't do anything.
I got to BIOS by hitting F1 and Phoenix 1.09 is the BIOS version.  HP doesn't have an update for this model with win 2000 and I tried to go to Phoenix's home page to see what I can find out but I have been getting "can't find the page" error for the past 2 days.
What should I do now? Is this the right path to go? Any suggestion as how to fix this problem on this computer would be  appreciated.
Thanks a bunch....Can you give me the link to the website? Quote

HP Pavilion 8665C Desktop PC (US/CAN)

Update BIOS to v1.16
Software & Driver downloadsThanks Computer_Commando for the link to HP site. I have tried that. There is no BIOS update for that model with Win 2000! Plus the computer is dead. I can't get to do anything not even in a Safe mode....
Any thoughts? Can you ENTER the CMOS setup (BIOS) by tapping F1 (or whatever the key is for your HP) upon powerup?Yes. I got to BIOS by hitting F1 and Phoenix 1.09 is the BIOS version. As I SAID, HP doesn't have any update listed for Pavilion 8665C with Win 2000!!!!
BIOS is OS independent.  I would download and install the latest version.

Solve : CMOS setup for Dell Optiplex GM 5133?

Answer»

I'm trying to access the CMOS setup for a Dell OPTIPLEX GM 5133 with a Phoenix BIOS V1.10 A20.  Most older Dells seem to be F2 during POST to enter setup, but not this one.  I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of (Esc, Del, F8, etc) - anybody know the magic key?  Dell SUPPORT doesn't seem to have ANYTHING on a unit this old.  Trying to get it up and running to support some older DOS stuff.
Thanks  -the new guy-  I have yet to see a Dell that was not in their database.  What is the Service Tag?

I think CMOS setup is ALT-ENTER
It's USUALLY displayed on the POST screen.

Update:

Found it on Dell's website:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/dta/stingm/00000005.htm

from DOS
CTRL-ALT-ENTER
Commando? Seems more like guru to me.  Been so long since I worked on a Dell, I forgot about the Service Tag.  Used it on their site and presto - found the Ctrl - Alt - Enter, as you found also (way ahead of me, I might add).  Guess that's why I'm the "newbie" and you're the expert.  Thanks for the quick and accurate response.

Once I got to the setup, I was able to match the hard drive type with the gently used one I just put in and VIOLA!  we have C:> prompt.  Kind of makes the heart beat faster!  Thanks again :+) Quote

...Been so long since I worked on a Dell, ...

Me, too.  I knew it was "something"-Enter.  I think it's  unique to Dell.

I READ that. But that was not an issue known from the start. Just tells me what I needed to know.  Well, I finally got Windows 98 SECOND Edition and I installed it. Solve : HDD install gone haywire!?

Answer»

Hello,
My old HDD fizzled, so I'm installing a new one. I hook it up, fix the jumpers, connect it correctly and fire it up with the mfr's disc in CD ROM.

Now we have trouble.

it starts Caldera DOS  and then gives me multiple ERROR messages about no CD ROM drive found, Device DRIVER NOT installed...Driver not found :generic
a: nwcdex.exe requires a driver name to be specified
Invalid drive specified
Command Or Filename not recognized
A:\>

and I can't go any further. Usually the CD ROM from the mfr just starts the formatting menu so I am baffled.
Can you help me?It would probably help to install an OPERATING system first.JS:

Is Caldera DOS installed on the hard drive now?

What operating system installation CD are you using?Hey Doc-

Caldera DOS isn't installed on the HDD..

and we're using XP Home..Caldero DOS comes with diagnostic SOFTWARE. Why are you using that?Appreciate the inspiration, Thanks to all! problem solved..normally I would use the HDD mfr's CD-ROM to format the new drive, this time I  I used the PC makers recovery disk which partitioned, and installed. All good.
Good to hear its resolved.

Solve : Connecting wireless headphones?

Answer»

OK, I just bought some Sony wireless headphones in the USA for use on a UK PC - stupid idea, I know, but two seperate Sony employees assured me that the only problem was the power plug, which would need a UK adaptor - which isn't a problem.

Now I'm back, and the the black square-ish optical cable that is supposed to be universal does not have a plug in any of my PCs. There is a plug that it will go into on the back of a Hi-Fi system, but the LINE-in/out PLUGS on the PCS are round and smaller. Is the correct plug hidden away on my PC, do I need to get an adaptor and if so where, or do I need to send them an irritated email?

PS. the headphones also include analogue plugs, which LOOK a similar sort of size to the line in/outs on my PC, but there is no cable included for them.Is this the thing I need? It LOOKS sort of RIGHT, but I can't be sure...

Solve : What Hard Drive?

Answer»

I know its peoples diffrent opinions about what hard drive to get but wich would you choose out of these. Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung. So far, I have had only two Hard Disk Drives that I can recall and made serious use of:

30 GB Seagate 5400RPM with 2MB cache (Approx. 4 years old)
80GB Maxtor 7200RPM with 8MB cache. (Approx. 2 years old)

No corrupt sectors, no other problems.

Both are very RELIABLE and durable.

Seagate technical support and diagnostic software is more than outstanding.

The Seashield around the HDD makes it very sturdy and allows you to move the Hard Disk Drive around with little trouble should you ever find the need to.

The Maxtor seems to perform excellent under stressful and negligent situations. Which I have had exposed to for at least a year. I rarely used to defrag until two approximately 3 months ago.Thankyou for the reply. Can i ask one more thing as im just not sure if to upgrade or not. I use my computer mainly for games. I have AMD 2600, 80 gig hard drive, Geforce fx 5900 xt, 1024 memory DDR 3200. Mother board is msi k7n2 Delta nforce 2 chipset based. Now what i was wondering is what makes games run better. Does the motherboard have any effect as to how games run, by that i mean would i be ok just getting a Amd 3500 for this board, or would i see alot of diffrence in game play if i got a new Motherboard with a Amd Athlon 64 3500. Would the LATEST mainboards MAKE things run alot quicker.Videocards play by far the largest role in computer performance regarding games.

However, if your mainboard can not efficiently work with your videocard because it will not allow you to install a faster processor (for example), the mainboard will become the bottleneck. You have to be very careful when upgrading. You might buy a piece of hardware that is capable of delivering much more, but because certain hardware is holding it back, you will not notice much or any improvement at all.

In order to fully understand this, you will have to do a lot of research regarding your own hardware and know your computer thoroughly.

You may require a new motherboard to correct the broken dimm slot or LIVE with only 1024 of ram.

You should not be trying to overclock.....unless you fully understand the potential danger it poses if done incorrectly.

If I were you , I would D/L ......   antispyware Beta......

Solve : new PC won't start up?

Answer»

Okay, I recently built a computer with my friends and the computer won't start up.  We cannot reach the BIOS.  When we turn it on the LED power indicator on the monitor blinks, but it is not the monitor or the cord since we tried different ones that we know work.  We thought it was the motherboard and sent back for a new one but that didn't work.  Everything is HOOKED up CORRECTLY, i've checked it several times and so have guys who have fixed computers.  All the hardware is BRAND new and the power supply is a 450 W and more than enough to give enough power.

I posed this question to my college's PC department and they had no idea.  I really don't want to go to  a pc REPAIR shop and pay money.   Quote

450 W and more than enough to give enough power.

Never assume a PSU is capable of delivering enough power by looking at the wattages alone.

Is the motherboard touching the case?

Have you tested all hardware components in another PC to see if they are all functioning properly?   Quote
Did you load the motherboard cdrom disk?

There is no magical cure on the motherboard CD. They are drivers. Occasionally, the CD can function as a  recovery CD. It will not help when nothing appears on the screen. Where did you get this idea from, Merlin? Quote

Solve : me again?

Answer»

haha. i did it... kinda. I finally got the little HD to be reconized, i got it partioned and formatted, although i think something is wrong, since it too said it was formatted as a [email protected] 22. any ideas about that? No it is not a laptop, and the partion is automaticly set to active.anyway, so i go to do set up, the coumpter does it's self test of the c drive and d drive(the virtual drive) and say there is no trouble, then it says that it is copying the files need to install windows, and it stops responding. the help file said that if that happens, to shut it off, and turn it back on, and run setup again, i do that and this time scan disk says there are a whole world of things wrong with the HD, files being misreported, overlapping, damaged, or not being reported as the correct size, so i have scandisk fix the problems, but one KEEPS poping back up... something like c:/dch00000 , it says it is a damaged file or folder, i'll come back on latter and GIVE you the exact message, then it says that scan disk will delete the folder and basically make a new one, but it is always the same DCH00000 that is always messed up.What is the make and model of this computer?  Hope you're going through all this for the "learning experience".  Maybe it's time to look for a new "used" computer.  [email protected] 22 indicates a BIOS or IDE interface problem.  Have you tried a different IDE cable?  If one DATA line has interference or a connector is not making solid contact, strange things can happen.well forget about the old computer, and now i get the fun of an even older computer, basically, my friend was over, my computer was on, without the cover, and she spilled her pop on the motherboard, so she gave me her old one to make up for it, now everything works, although the computer won't pick up all 2,112 MB of the old hd it does pick up to 621 if i convince it that is what is installed on it, ready to laugh, the cpu is a intel i456. But as I said It at least works, although I found out that I can not PUT xp on it without a pentium,,  but oh well 98se is better, well i like it better. thanks for all your help, oh and yes I was doing all this for the learning exp. this way once my big dog gets up and running, i'll have some idea of what is going on.Repartition the Hard Disk Drive or test its reliability. It may have failed.

Keep liquids away from Mainboards. Also keep friends away from your PC.   Quote

...spilled her pop on the motherboard,..

It can be CLEANED, if you're up to the task.
There's probably some goop preventing contact on one pin of one connector.Cleaned? Are you making fun of me? The thing was blowing smoke, and sparking, I'd say there was some serious goop going on. But I took your advice, looked into a used computer and got this nice little deal :-/ It works, and the hdd problem is fixed, eccept that it won't read all of the hd, like before, I could make the old computer think the hd was a 621, by playing around with the numbers a litle, but it wouldn't show all 2 gigs. same with this one, only it won't show past 508mb, when i go into setup, i auto decect the hd, it says 2118mb.ok, that is what it is, I go to fdisk while setting up win 98 se, and fdisk says max size is only 508mb. So I said screw it, I took the 508 and ran, but i'd like to get it all to show up, I have sent for a bios update, but don't know if it will work or not, anyway, if anybody has an answer to this, feel free to email me at my new email address. I'm online most of the time now that i got the computer working good enough for internet. Oh if you look in "formatting a hard drive" posted by me, you can find my motherboard and cpu info. And yes Raptor, I fully plan on keeping all liquids and friends away from my pc Here's an article you'll want to read: Hard disk drive is only being seen as a 504/540MB hard disk drive. Quote
Cleaned? Are you making fun of me? :...

No.  I didn't understand how many computers you were referring to.  I think this is #3?  The 1st one which your friend blew up, the 2nd which you were having the trouble with the IDE, and now the 3rd which only sees 508MB?
Commando...relax a little, i was joking about you making fun of me. and yes this is computer number3. and for as slow as it is, at least it is working, and I found that if I make a partion on another computer that does read all of my drive, then this one will read that partion. so problem fixed. Raptor and commando, you guys have been great, thank you for all your help, feel free to e-mail me, I'll leave my profile here for you to get the address.

Solve : Screen goes black....??

Answer»

I watch this site closely, so LET me get this out of the way right off the bat: I've checked for Spyware and viruses, I've cleaned my registry with WinAso, and I've run cCleaner. My firewall is up and functioning fine. All temperatures and fan speeds come up aces. My VIDEO card is properly seated and all my connections are good. I'm running XP with an Athlon XP2000 processor and a Radeon 9800 video card that has up to date DRIVERS.

Despite this, my screen will just go black at random times. No beeping, no nothing. The computer stays on, there's just no display. The green light on the monitor flashes on and off like I've powered down the machine, but I haven't.

Doubtful if not impossible. The monitor is not powered by the computer.

Unless your PSU is damaged or uncapable of delivering enough power to your videocard or other system components. But then your system would shut down or reset. This is not the case, is it?

Solve : Impossible Soundcard?

Answer»

I recently bought and modified (slightly) a new PC.  The onboard sound card just wasn't plain working no matter what I did.  I disabled it in the BIOS, uninstalled it, etc. and got a (used) new card, a Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI.

I've finally gotten it working, but now everytime I try to play a sound or a song, ANYthing, it shows that it's playing and no sound comes out.  My speakers are plugged into the right jack, they're turned on, everything is hooked up properly, nothing's muted.

Whenever I try to play something in Windows Media Player, for example, the visualization ripples once every couple SECONDS (even on loud PIECES), but that's it.  No sound.  Even though it shows it's playing. Quote

...I've finally gotten it working, but now everytime I try to play a sound or a song, ANYthing, it shows that it's playing and no sound comes out. ....

I do not understand your statement.

You finally got it working, but no sound comes out?
Why do you say it's finally working?
What VERSION of Windows?
Does sound show properly in Device Manager?
Before, it just plain couldn't start.  The card, not the computer, I kept getting "This device cannot start. (Code 10)."  I finally got it to start, but no sound comes out.

Windows XP.

Yes.it could be in your windows sound settings.

Look at the System try near the clock and CLICK double cick on the one that looks liek a speaker...

then make sure all that stuff is up..

R0SSR0SS, if you read my first post, you would know that I already checked that.  That's the FIRST thing I checked. Quote

I already answered yes to that.Does it NOW show properly in the Device Manager.
Drivers installed?

(We are only trying to help you   )You did not mention whether or not you installed drivers for your sound card!

Did you install the correct drivers?

Did you install ANY drivers?
I've gone on the official site and gotten drivers, I've gotten them off the CD that came with it, I've searched for and used multiple fixes, I've updated the drivers through XP...

I've done pretty much any no-brainer solutions to this problem.

[EDIT] Before I even thought to go to forums for help.  You guys haven't told me anything I didn't already know.could she sound card be broken? or damaged..

it should work Nothing appears to be physically wrong with it, or its placement.  Everything's where it should be, and nothing snapped off.

Also, I have confirmation that it was working in a different machine less than a week ago. Quote
Does it NOW show properly in the Device Manager.
Yes.  It shows up properly, SAYS it's working, but it isn't.  No sound comes out anywhere.  I even tried headphones, so I know it's not my speakers.

Solve : New system won't start?

Answer»

I just put together a new system, but it won't start.

I'm using an Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard and a Powermax ATX power supply of 450 W.

I have the 24-pin, the square 4-pin, and the 4-pin rail of the powersupply is connected to the mobo.  The cpu, heatsink + fan, RAM, video CARD, and IDE drives are all connected.  Power is supplied to the drives.

When the the power supply is on, the onboard power LED turns on, but pressing the power botton of the case does nothing.  The cpu fan, power supply fan, and case fan doesn't go; nothing happens.  The power switch is connected to the correct 2-pin on the mobo and I've tried both the possible configuration of this connection and still nothing.

I've rechecked the connections many times and they appear to be correct.  What could be wrong?  The system doesn't even start.  Any help would be appreciated. You need to CHECK the following:

  • Is all hardware firmly seated?
  • Are all cables firmly seated?
  • Is the hardware undamaged?
  • Does the PC power on without drives and minimal hardware?
  • Is the PSU set to the correct voltage? (115v or 230v)

You need to be absolutely certain. Are you connecting the case wires according to the manual or by feeling? Sometimes, the abbreviations seem a bit odd. Thanks for the help, but none of those were the problem.  I feel stupid for not noticing the problem sooner.  The problem was that I placed the motherboard into the case without spacers, so the motherboard was grounded.  That's why it wouldn't start.

I spent like over 5 hours rechecking all the connections.  Boy, did I wasted a lot of time.  Now I'm just having problem connecting to the internet with the new system.  It doesn't seem to detect router that's connected.  I'm going to call my ISP to see if they can help.

Thanks anyways. The little golden things where the screws go into? Are those called spacers?

I've never applied a mainboard without using those. Did not think that would be possible.Yeah, it's those golden things.  I call them spacers, but there may be other names for it.  The cheap case I bought didn't have those in, so I had to look for some spares.  I found seven and the mobo has nine holes for those, so it was good enough for me.

I got the internet connection working now for windows.  I just had to install some drivers.  Installing those drivers for linux is going to be trickier.

There's is still one problem that's bothering me:  I use an optical MOUSE and even when I shut down the system, the laser light is still on.  I looked through the BIOS settings and I've tried enabling and disabling the Plug and Play settings, but the same problem arises.  I believe it has something to do with the BIOS setup, but I can't figure out what triggers it.

Any ideas?Doubt that can be resolved - as long as there is STANDBY power on the  computer, the mouse will remain powered as well. This may be due to ACPI which allows you to, if configured, boot the PC by simply clicking the mouse button (twice, I believe).

Connect it to ANOTHER computer. Same PROBLEM? Mouse needs to be replaced.

You could also open it and remove any dust or dirt, but if a mouse BUTTON goes lame this will not help resolve the problem.

If you can not connect it to another computer, listen to the sound the mouse makes when clicking. Does it no longer MAKE any clicking sounds? Then it's most likely lame.My mouse lasted 2 years before it was eaten by my snake!    But since their cheap I just bought another!

You cannot open the case it is moulded and there is no toggle switch on it it's a Kingmax stick the one that the USB part slides out and locks. Can you copy files to it?CLOSE to the thumbs slider for the plug is a lock to write protect the drive.

What are your system temperatures and what type of Power Supply Unit is installed?450W power supply
asus p4p800 se motherboard
120G harddrive
1 gig Ram
cd writer/ dvd player
ati 9600 xt 256 mb
3 case fans
floppy drive
I don't know the temps as that computer does not show it readily. But the dust level was quite high. The computer is on 24/7. The air flow in that part of the house is nil except when the AC is on.No. It moves the fans about 1 revolution and that is all. Nothing shows on the screenTry testing the Power Supply Unit Quote

If fans (in PSU, if monitored and CPU) won't spin freely, computer shuts down to protect itself.

Computer should work fine in 80deg ambient temp.

THANKS guys! It was the power supply. At least it wasn't the MB or something more expensive!  Again, Thanks,   JimGood to HEAR. Have you bought a proper PSU this time?Yes, and I think this one will last awhile Very good, keep it clean by using a can of pressurized air if you see excessive dust build up.I have a leaf blower that runs at 200 Km/Hr.That sounds about right, Fed.  MIND if I borrow it? The dust level in this house is comparable to my work, which has a sandblasting department!

Solve : ATI or Nvidia??

Answer»

Quote

I am currently usaing a NVIDIA GeForce 6800 PCI Express card ...I would LIKE to get an ATI Radeon X850 XT Video Card 8x AGP 256MB GDDR3 ...

Well...there's your problem right there!  PCI Express is not AGP and is not PCI-X or PCI.

You better do your homework before you buy anything else!

How PCI Express Works

Intel says:
"PCI Express (PCIe) is a new I/O bus technology that, over time, will replace Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), PCI-X, and Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP). By providing advanced features and increased bandwidth, PCIe addresses many of the shortcomings of PCI, PCI-X, and AGP. PCIe retains full software compatibility with PCI Local Bus Specification 2.3, and it replaces the parallel multidrop bus architecture of PCI and PCI-X with a serial, point-to-point connection bus architecture. "

"It is well known that graphics can always use more bandwidth than what is available. Graphics data transfers cause maximum traffic on the PCI bus. The continual increase in graphics demand and complexity eventually made the PCI bus insufficient, which led to the invention of AGP. Now we are pushing the limits of what AGP can deliver, and we need a better solution. PCIe surpasses AGP in bandwidth availability, with more room for expansion in the near future. By increasing the number of lanes in a link, graphics adapters can take advantage of increased bandwidth and faster data transfer. Graphics adapters will be using the X16 link, which will provide a bandwidth of 4 Gbps in each direction. " Quote

I wish lol  I'm stuck with NVIDIA right now becuase when I bought my new computer, I would not have enough money to get an ATI card... Too much for the computer already lol

Why would you want an AGP graphics card when you have an PCI-E card installed?

I would consider that a downgrade. To Fed: Dell installed the card for me hwne I customizxed it online. I think (and hope) it is lol  Seems to be working find for now...

To Raptor: I have no idea if it is PCI or PCI-E. I'll have to look. It's actually word of mouth that I kind of prefer AGP over standard PCI. I'l have to check on PCI-E...

Too many drugs?  Can't remember?  You said it was PCI Express.woooo... Maybe I just didn't know that PCI-E is for PCI Express... Maybe I didn't TRY to put 2 and 2 together... Maybe I like using the older names, becuase there seems to be a new shortcut being made every two minutes... PLUS, you know how they show you all the technical information on the papers... I thought it was ONE of those technical things which I have ever wasted my life reading lol  Too many drugs? lol  A lame excuse for why someone got his terms confused. lol    Take it easy. Geez! Just a simple mistake. Get over yourself Mr. Perfect.    You act like you've never made a mistake before in your life...

[glb]Flame[/glb]You know what. Nevermind. I'm not going to fight with you over the whole thing. I'll be a man and admit I was wrong, becuase... I was lol  I refuse to waste my time fighting with you over somehthing so... Stupid... So now it's in the past. Back to the original conversation...

These are the regular names.

PCI = 32 bit
PCI-X = 64bit
PCI-E = Express Quote
PCI = 32 bit

The only one I have ever heard lol

PCI-X is found mainly on server mainboards. PCI-Express is what you see on new mainboards.

Solve : Nvidia Chipset and ATI Graphics?

Answer»

I'm just CURIOUS if there would be any problems running an ATI graphics card on a board with an Nvidia nforce chipset. It just seems wrong to me to have nvidia and ati in the same case. i'm looking at building a NEW system and i definitly want ati graphics, but the chipset seems to be between via and nvidia. personally i'm leaning TOWARDS via, but the nforce stuff seems to be so popular. any opinions on the MATTER?I have been using a GA-7N400Pro Nvidia 2 chipset mainboard combined with an ATI/Radeon 9000 and later 9800Pro for nearly two years now.

No compatability problems at all. Do make certain that you have the latest drivers installed, but this should apply to any HARDWARE you ever use.

Solve : ctx monitor OSD?

Answer»

the geometry of my ctx monitor DISPLAY is distorted as a result of my messing about with the on screen menu and i dont know how to GET things back to normal, how do i find the factory defaults anyone, the MANUAL is not much help! You undo what you have done by using the OSD controls. There should be a RECALL button as well. If this is not there, you can always connect it to another computer or boot into safe mode. This may also CAUSE it to reset.found the recall control on the monitor on-screen menu and the display is now back to normal settings. thank you raptor for your help. also learned some useful stuff just by browsing around the forum.
No problem, stick around if you have questions or suggestions.
