What socket is it and what is currently present? 3. What do you want to do with the computer? 4. More information about the BIOS can be found here 5. Did the monitor catch fire once? An error occurred during the installation of the device. The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device. I am about ready to throw in the towel on this computer. Essentially my computer hates my scanner. I install the software, then install the scanner as the instructions tell me and then the computer gives me this message: Cannot install this Hardware. An error occurred during the installation of the device. The class installer has denied the request to install or upgrade this device. SIMPLE just to HP and down load a driver for your scanner but make sure you get the driver for Windows XPIn the first lines I stated that the scanjet is not working it gives me an error(which is in the post). For reference and further INFORMATION I stated that the Laserjet is working fine as well as all other hardware devices installed on the computer, i.e. mouse, keyboard and monitor. Scanner will not install Printer installed fine as well as other hardware devices. Any SUGGESTIONS?"Simple just to HP and down load a driver for your scanner but make sure you get the driver for Windows XP " Already did that, and it gives me the same error message. |

Solve : Unusual beep code? |
|
Answer» About three times a week my PC will freeze up, and I'll have to reboot. But during the post, I get a single long beep code, repeating over and over. I haven't seen a reference to this beep code in any of the lists. Anyone know what it might be?That often indicates an overheating processor.
Wish I could return the favour re: your PayPal question... alas.No problemo, customer support has been very generous in their answers. Have you resolved the beeping sound?Just researching the proper way to check the things you recommended. What is your CPU temperature?I downloaded a program last night that supposedly MONITORS that, and got a steady READING of 50 C. I'm not confident that's altogether accurate though, because it never FLUCTUATED more than a degree in either direction, and it didn't look like very professional software. Quote I downloaded a program last night that supposedly monitors that, and got a steady reading of 50 C. Use Everest Home Edition. You can also use the BIOS to monitor temperatures.Gentlemen, I downloaded and ran both programs and they were excellent. Raptor, my temp is running between 46C and 49C as I type this. Front side bus 133 MHz, CPU multiplier 15x. CPU fan at 2909 RPM, chassis fan at 2766 RPM. Merlin: XP SP1 Athlon XP2400 2x256MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM Radeon 9550 Video Card 2 x 40GB HDD CD/RW DVD-ROM RealTek Onboard Audio Wireless keyboard/mouse Thanks, fellows. When does this beep occur?Always on reboot, and always before the POST. It's the same symptoms every time, and it always happens after the machine has been on for several hours (we keep it on all day, and shut down at night). I've had it occur in three different scenarios: 1) I do a warm restart after a software install, 2) the system will freeze completely, and I'll have to shut off power and then power up again, 3) the system will shutdown and restart randomly and without warning; most of the time this happens while surfing. It happens once or twice a week. Not enough to drive me bananas, but enough to cause me concern that this may be the beginning of something more sinister. Sygate and AVG always running. AdAware scan three times a week. I'm leaning towards the overheating theory too, because if I leave the machine off for 5 minutes the problem goes away. 50C seems a little warm, but not drastically out of whack. Is your videocard properly seated? Make certain that the videocard fan is working if present. Quote Is your videocard properly seated? Seems to be. Quote Make certain that the videocard fan is working if present. None there. Maybe THAT'S the problem! I have a feeling this is something I may just have to learn to live with.Run a test on your ram overnight.Unless your case temperature is over 50 degrees celcius, I would doubt that a videocard fan could be causing the problems. |

It's not a laptop any more they are NotebookIt's still a device which can be put on top of your lap. They named it notebooks because some low lifes would burn their LAPS when using them for an extended period of time. Don't get smart with me.Do you have virus/Spyware protection? Sounds like a bug to me... Which operating system? Is this your internal keyboard, or an external? Have you tried an external keyboard to see what the problem here is? Don't get smart with me. To use the notebook on your lap there is a CHANCE that you will cover the fan intake and ofcourse the computer will shut down this has happened three times with people who own notebooks. Solve : LCD monitor shows static-like noise in dark areas? |
|
Answer» My LCD monitor (Dell 1800fp) just started showing very strange video noise in the darker areas of the image. This occurs even with the monitor cable unplugged. For a pure black screen, the result is a fairly stationary teal. For dark colors, certain components of the color are exaggerated and the pixels jitter and shimmer similarly to TV static (e.g. dark red pixels become bright red flickering pixels). |

Answer» If your house power supply is 115V then you should set it to that.If it STILL does not work, you may have damaged the PSU. Try REPLACING it with an auto-switching model.Supplying LOWER voltage than PSU is set for will cause no damage. In FACT, if you measure the no-load voltage, all will READ correctly. It's a Switching Power Supply not a Linear Power Supply. |

Solve : adding already formatted hard drive? |

Answer» I am trying to install my hard drive from my old computer into a Dell Dimension 4500. BIOS is recognizing the hard drive, but it is in a continuous boot loop. It will not load Windows. Dell's support wants to charge me $100 to help me fix the problem. I am a student and cannot afford it! Can anyone tell me how to add an already formatted hard drive into this system as the boot drive? I would appreciate it greatly!!I assume your 'formatted' means 'Operating System' installed? ...Would I have been able to access the files in the my documents folder on the slave drive if I was logged on as administrator? ... Solve : Installing an Ati Radeon 9800 Pro in a new comp? |
|
Answer» Alright, I'm here for help installing a new Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 256 mb video card in a new computer. The trouble is, the manual says to install the drivers, remove your old video card, and install new ones. This is a new build, so I don't have any way of installing the drivers, cause I can't install them unless I can see the screen, which I can't do WITHOUT a video card! What do I do? Please Help! I don't think you understand. XP is not installed, and I can't do so until I can look at something on my moniter, which I can't. In other words, I think the card is broken, and I can't fix it. I think. Make certain the card is properly seated. Connect the MOLEX power connector to the videocard, otherwise it will not work. The card comes with a power thingy that it tells you to plug into the PSU, and then hook your hard drive up through the card. Also, I can't switch my BIOS if I can't see anything. Seriously, nothing happens to the moniter. Advice to switch BIOS or do other things won't help until I can see the screen.
Did you take precautions against electro-static discharge when inserting the videocard? Does the fan operate when you turn on the computer? The plot thickens... So your question would be, "I have just BUILT a new computer and when I turn it on I get no bios post screen"? Any beeps? Low quality PSU or too small? |

Solve : Random question? |
|
Answer» OK, so I know why computers used to use floppys to boot up and I know it's still convention for computers to check the floppy drive first for a disk to boot up. I know this is helpful if your whole system is FRIGGED and you *need* to boot up using a floppy. PS-Are there NO women in this forum? Fed looks very attractive in a leather skirt. Quote Is that the only reason why a system will try to boot up from a floppy first? And the reason you need to remove the floppy disk before booting up? Most BIOS are set to boot from the FDD by default. Either this is a LEFT over from the days when new PCs still came with floppy drives or it is to prevent having users who know enough to install an OS, but not enough to configure the BIOS, from having to enter the BIOS setup and change settings there. Newer Operating Systems allow you to boot directly from the CD-ROM, removing the need for a Floppy Disk Drive. Quote ...I'm more investigating why it's stayed convention to boot up from floppy first... Hard drives are the SINGLE component most likely to fail in a computer. This failure may be hardware or software related. If the hard drive fails, there is no way to start the computer without a boot device (floppy disk or CD). Bootable CD's have only been with us for 7 years (since Win98). Bootable USB is beginning to show up now. There are a lot of working computers in the world older than 7 years. My primary computer is 5 years old and suits me just fine. Not everyone needs (or wants) a Pentium 4-3GHz. New technology costs the most, better to wait a year or two until prices drop. Here's one to ponder. Why is the hard drive "C"? And why is the floppy disk "A"? Might help to answer your original question, "A" comes before "C", so floppy is first. Long Live the Floppy Disk, may it never die! (While we're at it) Long live DOS, it will never die! Quote
I'm not quite sure I want to see that But, yeah I can understand what all ye guys are saying and it makes sense. Good, observation on the floppy = a:. I've always noticed that myself and thought it may have something to do with that So basically, floppy has just stuck. I just find it so strange that people don't make CD boot disks. I'm a comp Sci PhD student and *everyone* in my department at University makes boot disks on floppy. It's just odd how everything else has 'moved on' but boot devices are commonly floppy. Weird-don't you think? Quote I'm a comp Sci PhD student and *everyone* in my department at University makes boot disks on floppy. Boot diskettes are rarely over 1.44MB in size. It would be a waste of a CD-R if you ask me. Plus, writing to a floppy is still easier than accessing your CD-RW copying program. Especially with all the automated programs that create a bootable diskette for you. |

Solve : Ram running at incorrect speed.? |
|
Answer» Dusty101 I have one 1G stick and one 512M stick, so a total of 1512M. There is NOTHING wrong with the ram at all, it's compatable with the motherboard. http://www.valueram.com/config/ModelsInfo.asp?sysID=16910&OEM=ASU&submit1=Search In the BIOS it recognises the full 1512M but in the memory test at the startup, it only reads 256M. I've updated the BIOS but it is still the same outcome. Is there anything i need to do in the BIOS? I have a KINGSTON 1Gb 333MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2.5 PC2700 184-PIN DIMM (KVR333X64C25/1G) Quote BIOS it recognises the full 1512M but in the memory test at the startup, it only reads 256M. What does this have to do with memory speed? Quote In the BIOS it recognises the full 1512M I have never seen a BIOS that shows you the amount of RAM installed. This is not a user built PC, is it? Have you tried disabeling the Quickboot option in the BIOS? Is all the RAM detected by Windows? What motherboard is this?seems to stuck on 256ram?It's ok, i've fixed it now. SORRY for being such a noob. BTW this is a good forum What did you do to solve the problem?I BET he has a 256Mb video card. |

Solve : Modular Floppy drive? |
|
Answer» HI everyone, I just BOUGHT a Dell laptop and added a 'modular floppy drive.' I assumed it would be installed in the laptop when I got it but instead it came seperate. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to install/connect it (it does not have a USB connection; it has some wider connection) and I dont have the users guide on my laptop for some reason. Any help is appreciated. -SteveI'm not into laptops at all but the other day a friend showed me some card he bought & it plugged into a long SKINNY slot on the side of the laptop. Have a good look around the laptop SIDES. Quote dont have the users guide on my laptop for some reason You may need to download it in digital format. Books are BECOMING a thing of the past, it seems. Quote (it does not have a USB connection; it has some wider connection) The Floppy Disk Drive may be interchangeable with the CD-ROM player. Did you get a plastic casing with the CD-ROM player or FDD? that features the same connector as the one on the laptop? Thanks raptor!! It IS interchangeable with the CD/DVD drive. Funny, I had never hear of such a device before. Quote Funny, I had never hear of such a device before. So far, I have only seen one and it came with an aging Toshiba laptop. |

Solve : Did I fry my harddrive?? |
|
Answer» Hey everyone, I pray that somebody can tell me I haven't done the unthinkable. Here's what happened, and please don't laugh. I just moved from the U.S. to the U.K. and brought my COMPUTER with me. When setting it up in my new home I entirely FORGOT to change the voltage on the back of my cpu. Consequently, when I tried to plug in my tower using an adaptor, as soon as the plug touched the socket there was a loud spark and some smoke came from inside my cpu. I panicked and left the computer alone for 24 hours PRAYING that by some miracle I hadn't completely ruined it. I came back and changed the voltage on the back of the tower and plugged it in again (without a spark this time) and tried turning it on...nothing, of course. Could anyone tell me what I've actually done to my computer, because I have no CLUE. Have I fried my hard drive and lost all my files from the last 5 years? Tell me it isn't so! Please! Any help would be HUGELY appreciated because I'm rather distressed. Thanks in advance, as soon as the plug touched the socket there was a loud spark and some smoke came from inside my cpu. I panicked and left the computer alone for 24 hours praying that by some miracle I hadn't completely ruined it. I came back and changed the voltage on the back of the tower and plugged it in again (without a spark this time) and tried turning it on...nothing, of course. The CPU is the Central Processing Unit. Try replacing your Power Supply Unit, your other hardware may have been saved. |
