Solve : Fixing/replacing ink pad on Epson CX4600 and/or extracting ink cartridges?

Answer»

My Epson CX4600 all-in-one has all lights flashing when I turn it on (EXCEPT for ink and error which are solid) and an E which indicates that a part needs to be replaced…from looking around it seems like the most LIKELY culprit is the ink pad…there are some programs which can be used to reset it after cleaning/fixing it but nothing for Mac or Windows 7 which are my two machines.

I'm GETTING ready to throw it out but is there any way to fix it? Even if it doesn't work out I was going to give the unit to a charity which breaks down computers for their parts anyway.

Also if there's any way to extract the ink cartridges (one of which is completely FULL) without completely smashing the thing, so I can get credit at the local refiller. tia

Solve : new to computer building...?

Answer»

hey guys back in February I built my first system. since then I been having a lot of problems that I cant seem to fix. well first there was this crazy freeze where the screen would go to a solid color and then RESTART. I replaced the graphics card and now it just freezes. I have also been getting these blue screens: memory management and page_fault_in_nopaged_area. I have tried goggling both of these errors and and haven't found a solution. the really weird thing is that when I replaced the graphics card about 2 weeks ago I didn't have any of the errors or freezes I would just put it to sleep every night, but 1 night I shut it down and the next day I starting having all these problems again. I really do not know what to do, I'm at wits end and I'm starting to put more money into this machine then I would have liked. here is a list of all the components that are currently in my machine:

PS: I'm really sorry that I posted all the links but thats all of them, I also have MANY MANY scanners installed and no THREATS have ever been detected, plus over the 6 months that I have been having these problems I have reformatted a BUNCH of times and even bought a brand new OS. I'm currently running Win7 Ultimate 64bit. any advice would be greatly APPRECIATED thanks.Try pulling out that A-DATA memory module and see how it runs.okay so I removed that memory stick and it seems to be running fine. how did you know to remove that one if you dont mind me asking. but I'm not sure it seem every time I make changes to the hardware it runs fine for a couple of weeks then starts having issues againThe only possible problem component was the memory. Memory is like batteries you're recommended to have all the same brand. Although that doesn't mean you can't work around it, you just have to find matches. The memory you bought had a different latency and voltage to the others, then again it can be down to pot luck as to which brands are compatible. The manufacturers list compatible memory but it's not law, some memory may work if not listed.

Try Crucial.com to find a compatible match. Quote

I also have MANY MANY scanners installed

You should only have ONE antivirus and ONE firewall installed at the same time - Running more than one of each is likely to cause problems ranging from conflicts to crashes and lock ups.

What Antivirus and firewall programs do you currently have installed?i have avast, and windows firewall. i also have maleware bytes, superanit-spyware, and hijack this. also the memory thing makes sence i had no idea the memory had differnt latency and voltage. i didnt even know to look Your antivirus should be okay as long as you only have one AV and one FW running at a time.okay... after returning from short vacation I turned my computer on and I got some completely new problems 1st I got the blue screen Bad_pool_header. after the machine restarted it got this error: the top said " MCI command handling window: taskhost.exe application error." then the error said "the instruction of 0xfe4b231c referred memory at 0xffffffff could not be read." after I hit ok the machine gave me another blue screen this one I didn't have time to write the name down. but I looked the list you have on here on site and it wasn't any of those. I have it safe mode right now seeing if it will stop all the blue screen because they happen pretty soon after start up, like I didn't even have time to finish the first sentence. I'm REPLACING the memory on Tuesday when I get more money. so I would like to know if this could be anything elseno one has clue what wrong with my computer?ok i used a program called bluesceen view and it logs all the blue sceens and show which driver caused them and it says 6/7 of the crashes were cause by ntoskrnl.exe. i dont know what this means in any form just trying to shed some light on my problem. Solve : New computer - "No any device exists!"?

Answer»

Hey all,

I've just (2 hours ago) received my new computer which i ordered from computerplanet.co.uk. I've plugged everything in, made SURE all the cables fit snuggly, and everytime I start up, after the BIOS option, I get the message "No any device exists!" And then the next screen reads "A disc read error occurred. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart".

I've reconnected all the wires, even got my sister to stand and watch me do it just to give myself a sense of sanity. Another thing I tried was to connect my OLD HDD to my new computer, and again i got the "No any device exists!", however, it went straight to the window's loading screen and everything worked fine (BAR the internet!).

Can anyone please help me out?

Solve : Disc Copy 2.3 ate up all my external hard drive-- from 320GB to 37GB now!?

Answer»

Is there a way to delete the computer hard drive clone on the external hard drive and recover the files that were lost?  I want my full external storage capacity back and, if possible, the files.  Thanks.  I'm running XP Home.No idea what you are talking about. How about starting at the beginning and telling us the whole story?Yea, I should start from the beginning...
I have a 300+gb external SATA hard drive with music, movies, etc.  I thought it important to do a full copy of my computer to this hard drive by using EASEUS Disc Copy 2.3.  Well I prepared the boot disk per instructions and proceeded to copy from computer to external hard drive.  All went well...sort of.

I then checked the status of the external hard drive and it is exactly the same size as my internal disc.  I went into computer management and found that the external hard drive has 2 partitions [NTFS]: the copied C drive  and a huge amount of unallocated space , PERHAPS still with the files I'm looking to recover back to it.

I'd like to know if it is possible to actually keep the copied C drive and recover all the files on the unallocated space back to the external hard drive.  I can't possible be able to take any files (if RECOVERABLE) from external drive to computer drive, as my computer has only a 37gb hard drive (enough for my purposes).   I really think it impossible to keep the copied C drive on the external AND recover the allocated space, now that I think about it.  If this isn't possible, how can I  repartition the external hd to it's full capacity, never mind about saving anything. Any suggestions?

ThanksNope, your files are gone.  You performed a disk to disk copy and that's what it did, 37GB internal drive created 37GB partition with the remainder unallocated on your external drive.  EASUS Data Recovery Wizard Free Edition might get some of them back.  Next time perform a partition to partition copy.  Better yet, create an image backup which is compressed.  http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp

Using computer management to erase and reformat a external hard drive seems to me to simple.  If this was the general way to go why are there so many programs dedicated to erasing and repartitioning data on external hard drives? For the same reason every ice cream manufacturer makes vanilla and chocolate. Computer Management will destroy any data.  Programs you refer to will do what they do without destroying any data.Thanks.  I simply thought that computer management would actually take an inordinate amount of time doing this, as paid and some free programs will do it very quickly.  Wouldn't I benefit from using an outside program for speed and reliability (base, of course on user feed-back)?

If I happen to go with computer management, on the other hand, would I be able to partition the external hd to its capacity? You asked:  "...is there a way to wipe the external HD clean of the copied C drive and simply get all the space back for storage again?"

Restart and reinstall drivers.Thank you for your reply where do i look for the correct drivers and how do i reinstal themThe manufactures website will have the drivers or on the CD that CAME with the hardware (you haven't stated whether it is an on-board LAN connection, expansion card or a laptop).

thanks again jhaddOk Gigabyte list 4 POSSIBLE motherboards under that title: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/download-center.aspx?kw=ga-k8n51gmf

For the moment I am making the assumption that you have the basic GA-K8N51GMF (rev. 1.0) model and that you are American:

-Direct download link from Gigabyte-
http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_chipset_nvidia_c51.exe

-Or you can select it manually-
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1950&dl=1#driver

However I STRONGLY advise using System INFORMATION for Windows (SIW) or Crucial to check which motherboard you have.

http://www.crucial.com/
http://www.gtopala.com/Ive run the crucial scan and downloaded the drivers for the mother board but ive still got the problem, sometimes it says tcp\ip error or tcp\ip enable.
Im in England and downloaded the drivers from the european site.

Solve : Dell Inspiron Tower will not turn on?

Answer»

I have a Dell inspiron desktop that is now a year and a half old (expired warranty). I shut down the computer in the proper MANNER this morning. When I came home from work I pressed the power button on the tower but there is no response. It was plugged into a surge protector.

I checked all the dumb stuff... power is getting to it. Green light on the back is on, not blinking. Tried holding down the button for over a minute. OPENED it up and cleaned out the dust. Do not know what else to do....You didn't say which model, so I guessed Inspiron 530 Series.

A computer only powers on when the power controller tells it to do so.   If using a power strip protector, then protection already inside the power supply may be bypassed.  The surge was connected to the power controller by that protector.  Surge damage sometimes is made easier by a protector without earth ground and too close to the computer.   You should have finally learned that.

With information PROVIDED, everyone can list some suspect.  But the actual suspect list of well over half of the items inside your machine.  Or get a 3.5 digit multimeter, measure voltages on three key wires, and have a useful answer in the very next reply.  Those are your choices.

A reply will only be as useful as facts you provide.  If you provide numbers, then next post is an answer without speculation.  Otherwise every reply can only be 'it might be this' or 'it could be that'.  Your choice.

Solve : New MB / GPU - serious problem [790x chipset / HD 5750]?

Answer»

Hail,

Currently tearing my hair out in FRUSTRATION. I am running Vista 64 with 4GB ram, AMD quad 2.6GHZ, and had a ASUS M3N72-D motherboard (with NVIDIA nForce 750a chipset). GPU is Asus EAH5750 (with ATI RADEON HD 5750 chip).

All was fine but the MB was getting croaky, started to fail to boot, so I have bought a new MB, a Gigabyte MA790x-UD3P (with AMD 790X / SB750 chipset), mainly because it has crossfire, though I only have 1 graphics card currently.

The graphics card will not boot with an ATI driver. BIOS post fine, windows starts, windows loading bar appears, but then screen goes black (sometimes I get a badly distorted blue screen crash). The new MB does not have onboard GPU, but in safe mode, it boots fine and graphics work ok. If I REMOVE the graphics driver, and delete it, it boots normally using a generic VGA driver.

I have deleted all legacy drivers I can find (old MB had nvidia onboard GPU) so I have killed those too, including the HIDDEN device drivers in the Device Manager.

I have flashed the BIOS with the latest update from the Gigabyte website.

There is no onboard GPU so I cant try to boot without the graphics card, and I dont have a older spare.

I have TRIED Driver Sweeper, and cleaned all old drivers that way.

I have tried the latest graphics driver from ATI, and the previous 2 sets of drivers.

Nothing makes any difference. It is as if any ATI driver is toxic for the graphics card when in the new MB.

The graphics card is PCI-E 2.1, and the MB is PCI-E 2.0 - I read it should be backwards compatible though.

Has anyone heard of a bizarre incompatibility between 790x MB chipset and HD 5750 GPU chipset?

Is there anything else I could try?Did you try the other PCI-e slot ? ?
Quote from: patio on September 11, 2010, 06:47:20 AM

yes tried it (the other slot is PCI-E 8x apparently)  - no differenceSince it's brand new i'd RMA the MBoard for a replacement...

Solve : Hard Drive with Bad Sectors?

Answer»

Hi,
I have fixed a lot on HDD's and was wondering at what point you decide just to replace the HDD because it has to many bad sectors.
For example: I am working on an what was an infected computer. The HDD took quite a pounding from forced stopping (what is the proper terminology for this?). Computer freezing, being unplugged before it was shut down etc.
I have run chkdsk \r \f a couple of times but the HDD has been left with 2 bad sectors.
My question: In general or in your EXPERIENCE how many bad sectors would determine that you throw the hard drive out, keeping in mind that the repercussions mean buying a new HDD and installing the OS along with email database, documents, etc., etc., etc.
Thanks,
vlogg5Modern hard drives (HD) normally have many spare sectors, so when one or more become physicly damaged 'bad sectors' they get marked and can use a spare instead.

It depends on the HD to how many they have.

You should expect new HDs to rarely have any bad sectors, but an old one might get one or two along it's lifetime.

When you have a bad sector, recheck the HD ever now and then. If the bad sectors continue to grow and your getting new ones APPEARING, there is probably damage floating around inside creating more errors as it spins, therefore you shouldn't attempt to repair anymore but nibble 'recovery software' the data off onto a clean drive and get rid of the old one.

If your got a few bad sectors from bad use or power failure, but they stay the same, then it's safe to continue using it. Quote from: Azzaboi on September 05, 2010, 11:28:26 PM

Utter rubbish Quote from: Allan on September 06, 2010, 04:25:02 AM
Utter rubbish
Actually, No it isn't. When a sector goes "bad" in a modern hard drive, you won't know- it won't show up from a chkdsk scan. The sector will be silently reallocated to one of many Spare sectors. This will be reflected in the S.M.A.R.T "reallocated sector count" field. Once that goes beyond a certain threshold, S.M.A.R.T will report failure. You will start seeing "bad sectors" the MOMENT the spare sectors (usually on a servo platter) are used up. By that time it's gone beyond failure, though.

The "Damage floating around" paragraph doesn't make any sense though.Sorry - I was referring to the conclusion: "You should expect new HDs to rarely have any bad sectors, but an old one might get one or two along it's lifetime".

There's no way of knowing how many bad sectors a HD will develop in its lifetime.

And I thought I quoted the "damage floating around" paragraph. Guess I screwed up the whole post now that I look at it. Thanks for the correct BC At any rate most of it is "rubbish"...BC_Programmer said what I meant and trying to say in a much more structured way for the first bit and more, thanks.

As for the floating around damage, I'm refering to one or more of the plates being cracked and chipped inside, you need some force to cause this such as the hard drive or computer falling off the table, etc.

A very old HD I use to have a while back (which was a freebee give away from school) had this issue, new data would SLOWLY keep corrupting on it over time. I ASKED a tech about it and he said while the HD case is still sealed from dust, some fragments of damage are floating around inside causing more errors when the disc spins. The nibble software he used spin the disc slowly to grab as much damaged data as possible (forgotten the name of it but there's a lot of them to pick from).

Sorry, it's not explained very clearly...

Anyway the basic idea I got was if you have any bad sectors (and they are quite rare now), just recheck to see if more occur over time of still using the disc (rather than later finding a large chuck of important data is corrupted).

UPDATE**: Im also Running Windows Vista. (another reason why I want to Upgrade)I see the seller will allow return within 7 days after the buyer receives it.  So, you would have a chance to try the RAM in your computer and, if it does not work, return it.

As far as price, I have the impression you are not familiar with ebay auctions. The bidding on that item does not close until Sep 10, 201015:38:28 PDT.  Bidding near auction close time often occurs at a rapid pace and quickly drives the price up shortly before the auction closes.  So, in the end, it's selling price may not be much, or any, less than crucial.com. I bought a external harddrive yeserday to use for storage for my PS3 and read online i must convert it to FAT32.

I used a   program to do this but think i might have done something else as my computer screen went blue with something written in white and when i turned it on it goes to boot ad stops at a screen that says 0 partitions
thank youEXACTLY what did you do and how did you do it? If you did it from within the OS then you did not do any damage to your system partition, but if you did it at boot you may have formatted the internal drive. Thanks for the reply.

this was all with in my OS
I was quite tired at the time but i as trying to format my new external harddrive and i must have clicked on my hardrive. then the screen went blue with some white writing and i had to turn the computer off at the plug.

My main worry is not getting all the FILES i had stored on the hard drive

hope this helps Quote from: Allan on August 25, 2010, 06:09:05 AM

EXACTLY what did you do and how did you do it?
I either converted it to FAT32 or cleared partitions i think with in the softwareLast time. EXACTLY what did you do and how did you do it?the program i used was Fat32 Formatter 1.0. In the selection bar at the top it had my external harddrive and my internal harddrive I must have selected the internal harddrive
I  selected delete disc partitions on the software

then the blue screen occurred and the computer shut downWell, that's the problem with using THIRD party software. Had you used the built in tools in WINDOWS you would not have been ABLE to format the system partition, but it's very possible this utility allowed you to do that by exiting Windows when you clicked on "okay" and then immediately performing the operations. I've never heard of or used that utility, so I can't be sure. But it certainly sounds as though you did indeed delete the partitions on your internal HD which caused all data to be lost.

What OS are you using? If you have an original OS cd or dvd, boot to it and let the installation routine begin just to see if it recognizes an existing Windows installation. I AM NOT SUGGESTING YOU PROCEED WITH A NEW INSTALLATION AT THIS TIME - you just want to see if there is an existing installation or if you did indeed delete everything.I dont have the original OS CD.

Is it possible some how to recovery files? Here's a link to file recovery software (Google Search). I have no experience with any of the products.

Solve : sceptre monitor?

Answer»

I bought this sceptre monitor X9G-KOMODO VII  second hand a few weeks ago and was wondering if anyone here would KNOW how the audio works on it?
You get an audio lead with a stereo MINI jack at each end. You plug one end into the monitor and one end into the output of your sound card.

Solve : acer laptop doesnt start anymore?

Answer»

I was WORKING on my acer laptop (acer aspire 3000) yesterday, EVERYTHING was fine. Today when I tried to GET on, it wouldnt start. All that happens when I turn it on with only the battery is I get 8 amber flashes on the light in front which has a battery symbol next to it. So Im guessing the battery is low. And when I take out the battery and use just the power cord, there are no lights when I press the laptop power switch. So does that mean that the power cord is no good and has never been charging the battery, explaining why the battery is dead? Or could it be something else? Almost all LAPTOPS will work with no main battery installed.  If it doesn't work with only the AC adapter, something else is wrong.  When the laptop is off, the main battery installed, & the AC adapter plugged in, it should indicate if the battery is being charged.

Hey guys, I've had my computer for about 2 years now, never had problems like this before.  Every time I start up A game the screen blacks out after just a few seconds I've TRIED unplugging the cords and that doesn't help.  I've ALSO tried reseating the graphics card and that SEEMED to make it worse.

What are TEMPS on video card?  Download, install and run this:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.htmlI'm sorry it got to the point it won't even boot past the bios before blacking out, HOWEVER I did try using my friends video card and it worked fine so it must be the video card

Solve : Hard Drive not readable but working??

Answer»

I have a hard drive that I have connected to my old PB PC as a slave to see if I can rescue any thing from it. Basically, this HD is from another PB that has stopped working. So I connected it to my old PC to take everything Off. However, when I opened it all that showed up was the following files, and nothing else...

bcd_backup
bcd_backup.LOG
bcd_backup.LOG1
bcd_backup.LOG2

I think it could be because the partition is either destroyed or DAMAGED. I know for a fact that there are loads of files on this HD but they don't show up. I think MAYBE the only way is a file recovery program, which I have. But I want to know if there is another way, perhaps the Partition can be repaired or rebuilt so that the files, which I know for a fact are on the HD, could be retrieved.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. What OS are you using??

Is there an OS on the old hard drive?

The Boot Configuration Data file might be corrupted. Those are Vista bootloader files...
After a quick GOOGLE i found

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927391
Sound like he can't open the hard drive. You can rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment.

Is this wrong???Yes, it's wrong. He's not getting an error message, the drive is SLAVED, and it appears there are no other files on the drive other than the bootloader files. And sorry, I deleted my previous message by mistake.

But even if there ARE other files on the drive, you cannot boot to it from another system.
Would a file recovery work, as the OP suggested???Most likely he would need a Partition Recovery tool...if in fact there's anything left on the drive...Thanks to everyone for the replies.

This HD has Vista on it and was the main HD for a PB PC. It was, I believe full of viruses and I did try and do a CLEAN install but it wasn't possible and just refused to work. I don't have the original Vista disc as it's an OEM version. I've no way of knowing whether that would solve the problem anyway. I've no way of accessing this HD other than attach it to another PC as a slave which I have done.

There is stuff on the HD as I have tried to recover jps and avis and it has WORKED. But I'd rather take it back to it's original state so it can be a main HD again. Would a recovery tool help solve this problem and what could you recommend. Sounds like the attempt at re-installing Vista wiped everything...
google for Partition Recovery tools...after that file recovery tools...

NOTE: Try the Free 1's first

Solve : Wrecked my motherboard, are any of the other parts still useable??

Answer»

So, I am a retard.  Last summer I tried to add RAM to my SONY Vaio desktop computer, got some 2g sticks and threw them in.  Well, apparently RAM needs to be compatible with the motherboard, something I did not know.  Booting up the computer caused the whole motherboard to short out, and the machine was wrecked.

My question is, are those RAM cards still any good? Or are they trash like the motherboard?

What about the video card?  The card that is in there would be an upgrade for my brothers computer, could I give it to him or did that get killed as well?

Is there any way to TEST this without ruining ANOTHER computer?

Thanks!Take all components to a local shop and have them TESTED...
Unfortunately when you take out a MBoard it can take 1 or more components with it...

Solve : PCMCIA SRAM cards?

Hello:
I was wondering if anyone out there knows ANYTHING about the types of compatible (laptop running XP) Flash and/or SRAM pcmcia memory CARDS that are out there. I have these handheld pc's supporting all types probably back to when their were DOS laptops.
I wish to continue using these in both the handheld and bring them into XP laptops.
The ones in question have a button type 3volt lithium cell. They are labeled ALPHA Technology and when INSERTED into XP laptop they GENERATE exactly zero reaction.
Others  I have labeled New Media, Simple Technology all get recognized by the
drivers that come with XP generic driver. Even ones with button cells.
Anyone know why the difference? They look physically identical.

Solve : Raid setup help?

Answer»

I am looking to set 4 sata drives up in a RAID setup for backup purposes, I am however unsure what raid type to use.I'm not a RAID expert by any means but RAID 0 is not what you should use since you mentioned "backup purposes".  RAID 0 uses "striping" only (no parity or mirroring), which is not what you want. You need one of the other types of RAID but, since I'm no RAID expert, I don't want to recommend a specific type.

There are numerous references about RAID on the Internet.  Have you searched for them?  Yes I have searched the internet but there are so many different opinions, can you have 4 drvies in RAID 0? Quote from: nedkelly on August 26, 2010, 04:25:38 AM

RAID 1 - Mirror
Don't know why you need 4 drives for RAID backup.Check out this article.  It may help you make your mind.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAIDComputer_Commando: When first starting this I thought there was a RAID where you had data over all the drives and if one dies then you just stick in a new one it rebuilds and your data is still safe. Am I wrong?

Hmm does this sound like RAID 5?I guess one of the first questions should have been what are you trying to do and what is your budget?  For a home system, raid 5 is over kill, but for a commercial system it may be what you need.I am just going to get the drives as I get the money, I want a raid system that if one drive dies then my important FAMILY documents and movies are still safe, and want heaps of space to stick all my stuff Quote from: nedkelly on August 26, 2010, 02:43:10 PM

A RAID array, in any configuration, is a poor substitute for proper backups.yeah but I have a LOT of stuffThen you should have a lot of backups...

I have alot of stuff too...patio = mod?
Well I already have the board the ram and the psu, just have to modify the case a bit. Quote from: nedkelly on August 26, 2010, 02:15:36 PM

Hmm does this sound like RAID 5?
Not wrong, but maybe MISGUIDED.  I experimented with RAID 1 for a while.
RAID 1 with, for example, Drive A & Drive B.  Drive B is a mirror (exact duplicate) of Drive A, If you lose A, B is always there to take over; you then replace A as soon as you can.  Whatever is written to A is written to B, so writes are a bit slower, reads a bit faster, because it COULD read from A or B.  The RAID controller does everything, not Windows.  RAID is useful if you're running a server, or a computer that can never, ever be down.

Better to follow BC_P's & Patios's advice.

You are not complaining so don't feel sorry. We are all here to learn, understand and TRY to help.  :)I understand your situation and it happens. OK. Going to your "NEW" power adapter, The old power adapter seems to produce the same results. Which only means that acquiring a new power adapter is not the ISSUE. The only way of MAKING a complete diagnose(w/c the tech guy just had)of your laptop is externally going internally, checking all possible/critical parts. Which obviously he did not and should have tested it as a positive result.  Did you pay-out of the guy who check your computer?

There a a few things that can cause this issue but i will need to confirm some things first. When you say ", it goes ghost on me." Does that mean that mechanically it does perform the actions as if it were printing something. The paper is drawn forward, the SOUND can be heard as if the printer was printing (the carriage moves), It ejects what should be a printed page at the end of the SEQUENCE. Does all that happen?truenorthExactly, how did you know! it acts just like it's printing, puts out a page, makes noise, and then expects me to read it too!

Solve : Dell Dimension 8100 PSU upgrade?

Answer»

Hi, i'm in need to upgrade my 200w power supply on my Dell Dimension 8100. I came across one for my machine on ebay but the person told me it won't work because my own PSU does not have a ATX 24 pin and an 16 pin connector which both are meant to connect to the motherboard.

Every time my PC starts up the PSU is very loud. I came across another one on this site   http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/400-watt-power-supply-FSP400-60PFB-M.php  and it says clearly its for a Dimension 8100 but still has the ATX 24 pin and an 16 pin connector. Would it be safe to me to purchase this without it frying my motherboard?

My specs are:
Dell Dimension 8100
640mb RDRAM
Geforce 5200 256mb Graphics CardSome Dells use non-standard power supplies.  Read the nameplate on your 200W and see if it's the same as the so-called 400W.
Output     Max. Load
+5Vsb    2.5A
-12V    0.5A
-5V1    0.3A
+12V1    16A
+12V2    16A
+5V      20A
+3.3V    20AHi Computer_Commando, sorry only getting back to you now. Just CHECKED with my PSU and it does have a 24-pin ATX and also 1 x 16-pin Connector but i can't seem to find if it has a 4 Pin Molex P4 Connector square plug that connects direct to the motherboard.

My PSU is a 250w i thought it was a 200w. The details on the nameplate are:
Input 100 - 120v /6.0A
         200 - 240 /3.0A

Output +5v /28.0A
            +12v /14.0A
            +5VSB /2.0A

I also came across one 330w PSU on ebay. Would this be the right one to buy in your opinion?   http://cgi.ebay.ie/Dell-Dimension-8100-330W-PSU-NPS-330CB-024RGY-24RGY-/220548246093?pt=UK_Computing_PowerSupplies_EHIt seems to be the right one, it does say Dell on the nameplate in the pic.  BTW, it's that 16-pin motherboard connector that makes the PSU non-standard.  It's possible the 16-pin takes the place of the 4-pin Molex P4.Thanks Computer_Commando for your help. put usb device in to scan a paper and an error message saying " unknown device: disconnect device. refer to printer documentation to troubleshoot". the owners MANUAL was no help; i tried a different usb device, rebooted the printer. the same error message is on the printer's screen. i can not even print anymore b/c i can't get the error message to go off of the printer's screen. i've looked at many forums, u tube and other sites, but nothing hashelped. i'm starting to lose my mind and any help would be appreciated.
thank youAre you plugging it directly into the printer ? ?
What happens if you plug it into the PC....can you see the file and print it from there ? ?yes i am plugging the usb device directly into the printer. at this point, the printer does nothing..it displays the error message all the time and the ! is blinking. when i plug the printer cord into my COMPUTER, it won't let me do anything either.
Did the printer come with a CD (drivers etc)If the printer connects via USB try the following:

Unplug and disconnect the printer from the PC.
Go to Device Manager or printers in Control PANEL...locate the printer and select remove/uninstall.
Re-boot.
Go to Add/Remove Programs...locate the HP application and remove it.
Re-boot.

Now install the printer SOFTWARE using the HP CD...
Do NOT connect the printer until the software prompts for it.

Best of Luck.

Solve : Iomega eGo external hard drive non-responsive?

Answer»

Hi all. First time post!

Am having a PROBLEM with an Iomega eGo external hard drive. I'm running XP on a Samsung netbook.

When I connected the eGo, it worked first time, a bit slowly, but i could access the files. There's only about 40GB on there, but they are big video files.

The second time i did it - and now every time - it does the following (excuse the lack of technical language): first the computer seems to recognise it (it makes that bimbom sound you get you plug in a USB device), then, after a long time, it scans the files. But then nothing. The light on the eGo is blinking so it's working and moving, but the computer can't seem to recognise it any more. At this point I wait, and wait and wait. The light on the eGo is still on, sometimes it flickers. But nothing else happens. If I go to MyComputer, the whole thing is slow. Eventually, if I leave it, it recognises the hard drive and F: will COME up. When I click on this to see the contents, a long, long pause and freeze occurs and when it thaws the computer says the hard drive is not formatted and do I want to format it.

I tried using the Dos prompt and pressing F: and - after a long pause, during which the eGo light flickrs - I got: "The volume does not contain a recognised file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."

I've tried it on two other laptops, both running XP. Same results.

So. What does it sound like to you experienced folks?

A couple more things that may OFFER clues. I think the video files were originally made by a Mac, does that make a difference? Also I think I may have unplugged the hard drive without safely removing it the first time I tried it. If that is the reason, then the eGo is very fragile - I do this a lot with my WD external hard drive and they are always fine.

So - any thoughts?

If it is because of not safely removing it, is there a solution? The files are very valuable to me (I know everyone says that, of course. But I paid money for those videos).

Thank you in advance!

Rick

Open Command Prompt, type & enter this:
chkdsk f: /F
use big F or little f for either one, not case sensitive.
"f" is the external hard drive
"/F" fixes errors on the disk
If there's an error and it is able to fix it, you might lose a file.
BTW, type chkdsk f: /? to see all the options
Commando - thanks for replying so quickly!

Tried /F and got "access denied"
also tried /V and /R, same responseUnplug it and start over.  Windows may have locked the drive because of the errors it found.  Hope you have backups of the video files.

UPDATE:  Same issue here:  http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/923769-wd-external-drive-not-accessible.htmlok, i've tried what you said, nothing has changed. trying f: at the dos prompt returns the original 'volume not recognised' message.

i don't have copies because i bought the files and there aren't any more. it's a long story. but basically i need to find a way to get those files!

please help anyone. thanks.Too late now, but you should have burned them to a DVD, as a backup.  Try doing what the guy did in the link I gave you.  Put it in the freezer for a while, I have my doubts whether it will work, but you have nothing to lose at this point. Thanks Commando for your help. But is it really FINISHED? There must be computer companies that can get the data off for me. It's valuable to me. What sort of company should I approach?

Thanks. RickProfessional Data Recovery is very expensive.
Lets try this first:  http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/
If it wasn't an external notebook drive, it would be a bit easier.Ok, I will try that. I have to go now, but thank you for your help. If anyone has any other ideas, please, I'm INTERESTED to hear them.

I'll try leaving the drive off for a few hours, then try the freezer trick, and then the data recovery software. I'll be back to report my findings. Hope something works.

Solve : Dell XPS 710 and 720 blacks out after 9800 GX2 install!!! Please help!?

Answer»

Hi there! I have a Dell XPS 710 (QX6700 2.66ghz 8mb extreme ed 1K psu 8800 GTX) and a Dell XPS 720 (QX6600 2.4 ghz 8mb 750w psu 8800 gt in SLI) and both have 4gb ram 800mhz. I tried to install the 9800 GX2 and at first on the dell 720 it worked until I installed the lates driver... the monitor just went blank. It will go to the part where it show F2 or F12 and then it just went blank. So I said, well let me use the 710 that has 1K of psu (MAYBE it's a power issue, with this I believe it won't happen). So I pulled out the 8800 gtx, put the 9800 GX2, turned on the pc... and the same thing happens. Is it POSSIBLE that I have a bad card or am I just doing the installation wrong?

PLEASE ADVISEReturn the card for a replacement...

Solve : Non detected Disk Drive/Hard Drive Need help with dell Dimension 4100?

Answer»

Hello THANK you for your time, I am experiencing issues with a dell dimension 4100. I have received a virus and was told upon startup to insert some kind of startup disk im not sure it was a while ago so me in all my stupidity tried to connect the hard drive to a different motherboard in the spot the dvd drive plugs in to in that cisnet computer. Well after a few tries i somehow got it to recognize the hard drive upon startup and it tried to format it i think, although as soon as i SAW that screen i powered down and now the hard drive is no longer recognized by either computer, even in the bios it says the total memory is 512 mb with it connected to hard drive spot of the original dell. I would REALLY like to get my dell working again but it gives me the error Invalid BOOT diskette Insert Boot diskette in A: I do not care for restoring the files on the hard drive they are worthless to me i just want to get my computer working again any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.Place OEM Windows CD into the CD or DVD drive and boot off of this disk. If your system doesnt want to boot off the CD or DVD drive GO into bios and set the CD or DVD drive as 1rst boot device in boot order. Once you successfully boot off of your optical drive you then can delete the partition on the hard drive, create new partition and reformat, then install clean installation to that hard drive. If you dont have recovery or oem cd available, you will have to buy one.

1.Type: DDR266/200 ( For rev 1.0)
2.Type: DDR333/266/200 ( For rev 1.1)

Solve : HPS2031 "monitor going to sleep" what's up??

Answer»

The monitor is two weeks old.  Is it DEFECTIVE or do I have another problem?Would you care to provide some details or should we just start guessing?Sorry,

The PC is old; Windows XP home.  The monitor is new.

Turn the pc on and the screen starts up normal.  Within 30 seconds a pop up appears with the message, "monitor going to sleep".

It goes to sleep like it says and won't wake up.  Try to use the mouse to no avail.  Reboot and the exact same scenario OCCUR res.  I tried to insert and run the MONITORS setup disk but the monitor goes to sleep.

I'm not at the PC right now and won't be till I get home from work to answer anymore questions.

Thanks for your help.    Boot to safe mode. What happens?Hi Allan,

Here is what I'm going to do....  The old monitor was not thrown AWAY.  I will reinstall and isolate the monitor but that will TAKE a couple of days before I can get to it.

Please keep this thread open and I will contact you again.

Thanks,

TomPlease Close this thread.

For whatever reason starting thePC in safe mode was successful.  During that time I ran the setup disk again.  OF course I was in safe mode so that didn't complete itself.

Never the less the monitor is running again.

Thanks for your help,

Tom

Solve : Can I upgrade my motherboard to use more memory??

Answer»

My computer has 2 memory slots but with a 1 gig limit per slot.  Can I upgrade my motherboard to use a 2 gig chip per slot?

Here is some of my computer specs;
Pentium 4 CPU 3.06ghz
Microsoft XP professional
HP Pavilion 061
System Model: EL479AA-ABA a1221n
Bios ver: 08.00.10

Thanks for any input!
Chrishttp://www.crucial.com/index.aspxIf your BOARD is limited to recognise 1GB per slot, there's no way to get around that, no.
How have you determined this is the case, though?  OFTEN MANUALS and manufacturer's specs aren't updated and it's possible you can use 2GB sticks in the slots, but of course I wouldn't advise trying it blindly as it'd be a waste of money if it didn't work.

P.S. Welcome to the FORUMS!

Solve : Notebook/External Disk Drive?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba NB-100 notebook that i hookked my Nexxtech external usb dvd drive to.  the notebook will not recognize the drive.  It is showing in the device manager but it has a yellow exclamation mark on it.  When I click to update the driver it says it cant' find a better driver than the one I have.  I tried to BOOT from the drive to get to Windows recovery console.  It will boot and go through the first process of loading windows but when it gets to the point where it says Windows starting up it goes to the Blue Screen of Death with the error CODE Stop OXOOOOOO7B (OXF7A88524, OXCOOOOO34,OXOOOOOOOO, OXOOOOOOOO).  Why won't it recognize the drive and why can't I go through the boot process with the Windows disk I would like to re install windows at some point.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thank youWhat is on this external drive ? ?
When you say you are trying to boot to it what does that mean ? ?
XP and later will not boot to an external drive without brute force applied...

Did you recieve a Driver CD with this external ? ?
Was it unplugged prematurely without using the "Safely remove device" icon that sits in the system tray ? Windows XP Home Edition is on the external drive, and I mean I booted from the cd in the drive which it will until it gets to the point where it says starting windows. And yes I did remove the drive without using the safely remove hardware I did not even know it was there.  I read the user guide and it said nothing about that it just said to unplug the CABLES. Will that totally mess things up or can it be fixed?Normally it results in a total loss of data...
How did you install XP to that drive ? ?
Have you tried hooking it up to a desktop machine and see how Disk Management REPORTS it ? ?

To get to Disk Management right clik My Computer...select Manage...then disk management.
Then right clik the drive and select Properties and report back with your findings.....It's an external dvd drive so XP is on a disk in the drive.  I did hook it up to my desktop and  hardware management reports it and it works just fine.  OK i apologise...i completely misunderstood...
It's a DVD drive.
I'd TRY another XP CD 1st...Also, check in the bios to see if there is an option to recognize usb on boot and if so, that it is enabled.I did try another disk and the same result,  Toshiba doesn't even list that model on their support page.  Only NB-105's
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/home.jsp

Toshiba Forums:  http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/Drivers-and-Utilities/Toshiba-NB100-Drivers/m-p/44609

It is listed here:  http://www.notebook-driver.com/toshiba/toshiba-nb100-netbook-windows-xp-drivers/
None of the links seem to work.

Because it's a Toshiba netbook, it probably needs a special driver for the external USB DVD drive.

Solve : A question about HP Desktops and their Harddrives.?

Answer»

Hi everyone.  I have a friend who has an HP Pavilion desktop.  Recently the hard drive failed on it.  This was the original hard drive that CAME with the computer.  We did however have another laying around so I DECIDED to replace it with that.  However when I go to boot the computer I just hang on the HP logo screen.  I do not even get the normal peripheral and ram test numbers you see when you get the option to go into the bios.  My question is does HP require their own hard drives and not any old hard drive?  Do you think there is a setting programmed into the motherboard that will only accept an drive from the manufacturer of the desktop?  Im glad I caught myself before I just ordered something off of new egg!

Any help is much appreciated.  Thank you.No - you can use any HD. Boot to an OS CD and install the Operating System. But why wouldn't the other hard drive I hooked up load windows up?  I have swapped out hard drives in computers many times and have not had that EVER happen before. You cannot TAKE a hard drive from one system and put it in another and expect it to boot. It will not work. When you install Windows onto a hard drive, an installation is built that is tailored for that computer's hardware. If you then take the drive out and put it into another, it most likely won't work, unless both computers are either identical or very similar, and even then Windows validation will detect a different hardware signature.
Thanks for your information Allan & Salmon.  When I did a drive swap before it was at work between two Dell Dimension's.  I will just g o ahead and order a blank drive off of new egg and take it from there.  Thanks! Why don't you just blank the drive you "had laying around" and install Windows onto that?

remove your hdd and try to boot it. desktop would normally allow it tell you that primary hdd is missing.
that will be a good start. QUOTE from: jaydeee on August 27, 2010, 05:59:40 PM

And if I don't get the message of the hd not being present it is a bigger issue right?  Just curious the missing hd message would be presented on a black screen if I remember correctly?I think you can disregard Jaydee's post for the time being.

Solve : Better Network Card?

across a Linksys usb ADAPTER Wireless G it was free so I brought it home. I have no idea

witch is BETTER my card in my computer or the usb wireless adapter I was looking it up

but have no idea what I'm looking for in terms of specs. Could someone tell me whats

the better ROUTE in terms of SPEED and performance.Distance wise and signal strenght. USB wireless adapter is a portable plug and play device both for laptop and desktop. While a network card is GOOD only as an internal device and depends only on the machine-to-modem/router distance to compensate its source or signal. Depends on the user though on whats his environment or work set-up.

Solve : Sound card distortion help!?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new DELL desktop running Windows 7 64bit with an i7 980 3.33 ghz processor and 12 GB of RAM with a PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio sound card.

It has the latest drivers, which I have uninstalled and reinstalled plenty of times, and WORKS beautifully except for the odd random moments where it turns my audio robotic and twinkly, which I can only solve by unplugging my speaker jack and plugging it back in, or changing the speaker configuration from 2/2.1 to 7.1 or 5.1 and saving settings, or restarting the application that is playing sound - DVDs, itunes, the internet; EVERYTHING is affected by it. I have also tried lowering the system volume as some forums suggested, but to no avail.

I've spent the last two days troubleshooting it in every conceivable direction, and it's pretty frustrating, and I can't seem to contact Creative because their measly email support form requires a serial number I can't access because when I take the screws out of my case it still seems cemented in place, so I can't access the sticker without taking a hammer to it.

Any ideas? THANKS in advance.I'd have Dell replace the sound card. If the problem is resolved by removing and replacing the speaker plug, that's a physical problem not a driver issue.
