Solve : Adding hard drive from older computer? |
Answer» It's an 8 gig 266Hz P2. I'm wondering being that it has 98SE on it if that will cause a problem. I guess I could remove it before I take it out of it's tower or maybe after it's installed into my most recent computer that runs XP. Any ideas? The newer computer is a about a 1.5 GHz if that matters. Is this adding the old drive a good idea? I posted earlier about copying the drive on to a flash drive only to find out that 98SE doesn't recognize the 2.0 flash drives (1.1).If your reason for doing the transfer is to just gain more HDD capacity you certainly aren't going to achieve much with an 8 gb HD. There are flash drives available with 64gb (and maybe more since i last checked) However if you do not have any data on the 8 gb that you want to SAVE your best results will be achieved by removing all the data on it which can be achieved by reformatting it--then install it in your other computer.Assuming an IDE HD don't forget to set the pins to "slave". truenorthThanks for the response, the main reason I want to transfer it being that I can't copy it is because it has some things I enjoy still on it. Please do not take offense if this information is too basic for what you want to do. However not knowing your level of expertise i am including it as it is a very clear explanation of what you want to do (with all the proper cautions as well). Nothing appears to have been forgotten in the instructions. Good luck, truenorth http://www.ehow.com/video_6030_install-second-hard.html Thanks for your response.BTW, I always unplug both computers, but then again, I am an ESD expert and it's all 2nd nature to me. ESD (Electro Static Discharge) has nothing to do with grounding. It has everything to do with putting your body at the same Electrical Potential as the computer. It's easier to say "grounding" because most can understand that.Bubba, C-C's video is also good as it visualizes the steps indicated in my link. However i found it a bit simplistic and too fast for in INEXPERIENCED 2nd HDD installer. I did not read all of my link's discourse as i have performed this task many times. However since you expressed some concern re the "plugged" in issue. I don't see what caused you concern in that area. As C-C has stated i too also always unplug the computer when going into it's innards and the reference in C-C's video to "grounding" is also a necessary precaution (or a ground strap). It is certainly a procedure that is relatively easy with the precautions re static electricity (which can damage the computer) and as stated ensuring that power is disconnected as that can damage you. truenorth Quote from: Computer_Commando on August 12, 2010, 01:50:24 PM BTW, I always unplug both computers, but then again, I am an ESD expert and it's all 2nd nature to me. It's easier to say "grounding" because most can understand that. Thanks for your response, I had read that leaving the computer plugged in rid the chance of static electricity damage because of the grounding of the plug. I added a second disc drive (DVD recorder) a while back and had to call one of my co workers (Instrument tech) and get help. The instructions from the internet for adding a second drive weren't even close to the actual installation. You can read the Steps 1-6 in this link, no need to watch the video. This is exactly what I was referring to. http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-protect-your-computer-from-esdThanks, I'll take a look.I do have couple more questions, my ribbon on my old computer has a yellow wire on the right side instead of RED, I assume they mean the same thing. Also, what I think I'm going to try and do is once I connect my old drive up (I'm not even going to attach it to the cabinet) I'm going to try and copy it either to my hard drive or to a flash drive. I'm then going to reinstall my old drive back into it's original tower and delete pretty much everything. What do you all think about that? Quote from: The Bubba on August 12, 2010, 01:31:32 PM I appreciate your response and article but after barely getting into the article i see something that disturbs me. The fact of not leaving the computer plugged in (while off) to absorb any static electricity (to ground) is tabboo. After seeing that, the rest of the article may be suspect because of the lack of knowledge about leaving the computer plugged in. BTW, the rest of the article looks like a realistic procedure that would work. Any time you are working on the inside of any electrical equipment whether it be a computer or an alarm clock it is always good to unplug it. If you don't and it gets turn it on while your hands/tools are touching the components, that could possibly be the last thing you ever work on. It is the same principle as installing a new light fixture or ceiling fan in your house. You should turn the power off at the circuit breaker and not just the light switch. Unplugging something is a form of energy isolation and will help prevent you from getting injured or possibly killed. |

Solve : My Laptop won't display anything wont even show BIOS? |
Answer» My laptop wont DISPLAY anything. The screen itself does not even power on but everything else powers on. has 4 gb of ram but they still work. My laptop has no hard drive. Would that be the culprit? Quote from: chishio8 on August 15, 2010, 10:38:24 PM My laptop has no hard drive. Would that be the culprit? Even if the rest of Your computer is working there is no chance that it will boot into an operating system if no hard drive is installed. In most cases the operating system is on the hard drive. Since we don't know if some of the major COMPONENTS of the laptop are even working, before getting a new hard drive for the laptop you should ensure that the laptop hard ware is working. GET yourself a Live Linux CD (Knoppix 5.1 will do), boot off the CD and see what happens. If you get nothing at first, which I expect will happen, remove one of the ram modules from the laptop and trying booting again off the CD. If that doesn't work, remove the ram and try the other one. If that doesn't work, attatch and external montior to the laptop to see if you get anything out of it. Use the Fn + ? key on your laptop to toggle the screen over to the external monitor after powering on the laptop. If you still get nothing, it could be due to failed onboard video or the inverter/backlight in the display... You'd be looking at the motherboard replacement.. If it does work then you've isolated the problem to the laptop display hardware, either the invertor or backlight. Kind of difficult to tell if the inverter or backlight is the problem without the right tools... You may be able to find a used laptop of similar make and model and salavge the display from it, and swap it with your current bad one if needed. Might want to check the DC output voltage of the power supply just to be sure enough power is getting to the laptop. Look on the power brick for the DC output voltage.. Why does your laptop not have a hard drive? Did somebody take it out? Do you have a solid state drive? All computers had a hard drive (or solid state drives) at birth ,or initial turn on.External Monitors dont work either. the hardware is good. i checked the memory and dvd drive. everything lights up just nothing is displayedIf an external monitor doesn't work then the problem is not with your laptop display, assuming that you correctly toggled the laptop display to the external monitor. The most likely is that the onboard video has failed. Regardless, you're not looking at an easy fix at this point. Even if you could find a used laptop of similar make/model and get the mboard out of it, it's a big job.. On the other hand, you could find a used model, and take the display off of your current laptop and move it over to the laptop with the presumed good motherboard, move the hard drive over and ram as well... |

Solve : Samsung 2333SW, good monitor to get?? |
Answer» I currently have a Vusys 17" VGA monitor with a resolution at 1280x1024. I currently have a Vusys 17" VGA monitor with a resolution at 1280x1024. I don't have that model, mine is a 21.5' Samsung (SyncMaster P2270)and I've had it for approx. 6 mos. I hope that I don't have to buy another for a long time, but if I did, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another Samsung. I've been extremely satisfied with mine. overthehillHmm, also found this other Samsung Monitor, only a tad more expensive. http://www.dabs.com/products/samsung-syncmaster-b2430l-23-6--widescreen-1920-x-1080-5ms-dvi-d-vga-lcd-monitor-7394.html Seems to be the same but an extra .6" display size. Am I right?Though I know you live in UK and can't buy from Newegg, you may want to visit the site for customer reviews on monitors and see what you can get at your place that looks good to you. Quote from: WyattSoft on August 16, 2010, 04:47:57 PM Hmm, also found this other Samsung Monitor, only a tad more expensive.Apparently so. The monitor that I purchased is not quite as BIG, nor is it as expensive as the ones that you're LOOKING at. Don't know what 136 £ equates to CDN, but I ended up paying approx. $175(tax included) for mine. And as I stated earlier I've been extremely satisfied so far. Great response time and the Starlight Touch Button is very impressive. The reviews that I found rated Samsung to be a good product. Previously I had a 17" LG "Flat Screen" monitor and although very decent (and which I still use occasionally)I most certainly would not want to go back to something like that now that I have my Samsung. Solve : Question about having two operating systems? |
Answer» As I mentioned in another post about coyping a hard drive from an older computer a problem has arose. I thought there would be options as to which operating system I could boot up from either XP or 98SE. It doesn't show an option in the start-up and recovery section of the system nor when booting up and clicking F8 did it either. I was wanting to look at the programs listed to see which software discs to include if I sold the computer. I'll google around while waiting for someone to respond. No idea what you did or how you did it. Why not explain the whole story?I think you thought that by making a copy of the Disk running 98SE, that would give you the optoin of a dual boot OS. That what you mean?. As the mod has said, can you elaborate on what you mean. Copy overwrites copy. Did you ghost the old drive or just copy some app files or SOMETHING like that?? Quote from: Tim_Cdy on August 15, 2010, 10:16:36 AM I think you thought that by making a copy of the Disk running 98SE, that would give you the optoin of a dual boot OS. That what you mean?. As the mod has said, can you elaborate on what you mean. Copy overwrites copy. Did you ghost the old drive or just copy some app files or something like that?? Thanks for the responses and the answer is no to question by Tim_Cdy and to the other question of Allan's, I hooked a hard drive from my old computer which has 98SE to my current computer which has XP. They're still in the same tower and hooked together on the same ribbon like good little hard drives should be. I'm wanting to boot up on the 98SE drive which wasn't as easy as I thought it should be.What do you think of this article? http://www.pcworld.com/article/141614/faq_secrets_to_running_multiple_operating_systems.html Quote from: The Bubba on August 15, 2010, 09:42:38 AM ... It doesn't show an option in the start-up and recovery section of the system nor when booting up and clicking F8 did it either. I was wanting to look at the programs listed to see which software discs to include if I sold the computer...You have the option in the BIOS to change the boot order, with no danger of messing up the WinXP install. Takes a bit longer (maybe 10-20sec) than a boot loader.you can't just add a new drive with an OS and expect the system to see it. The bootloader doesn't know it exists. You guys argue it out and LET me know what's right, I can't find anything tangible googling. Quote from: The Bubba on August 15, 2010, 01:06:18 PM You guys argue it out and let me know what's right, I can't find anything tangible googling.I beg your pardon? Quote from: The Bubba on August 15, 2010, 01:06:18 PM ...I can't find anything tangible googling.Maybe too much BEER? (LOL) Free Boot Managers and Multi-Boot LoadersCC is right. either perform a "repair" install on the XP install (I'm not sure, but I think that might recreate the boot.ini file) edit the boot.ini manually (probably not a good idea unless your familiar with it) or, just stick with the boot option in the BIOS, which usually allows you to reorder which hard drive has "priority" to boot. There is no "argument" here. Allan and CC do not raise points of contention against each other at all. as Allan states, adding a hard drive with an OS to another computer with an OS already installed doesn't magically make the pre-existing OS recognize and allow for booting to that drive. One would need to make changes to allow for that provision (the aforementioned boot.ini file, for NT/XP). The only way to go about this without modifying boot.ini would be to use the BIOS boot options to switch the boot from one drive to the other. Quote from: The Bubba on August 15, 2010, 11:59:22 AM What do you think of this article?Good article but it does not pertain to your situation. The article explains how to create a dual-boot configuration by *installing* two OS on a computer. You did not do that. You simply transferred a hard drive with Win 98SE from an older computer to a newer computer. You did not install Win 98SE in the new computer. Do you understand that? If you succeeded in booting from Win 98SE, do you think the computer would boot right up without problems? Not very likely. Win 98SE does not have the proper device drivers for the new computer because Win 98SE was installed on a different computer. Quote from: soybean on August 15, 2010, 01:33:16 PM Good article but it does not pertain to your situation. You simply transferred a hard drive with Win 98SE from an older computer to a newer computer. You did not install Win 98SE in the new computer. Do you understand that? Actually, it's probably that 98SE will start up fine, ignoring the missing drivers. 9x is a lot more tolerant of missing drivers. I've transferred boot drives among machines on quite a few occasions; aside from finding some new devices (unknown and otherwise) and possibly reverting to good old 800x600 with 16 colours, It usually went well. This is of course as opposed to XP, which sometimes works but usually doesn't boot, or has any number of issues. This seems to be a very good tutorial on editing the boot.ini for multi-booting. Lots of screen shots to illustrate. How to Use and Edit Boot.ini in Windows XP Note: if you make any mistake at all, WinXP may not boot. You can still go into the BIOS and change the boot order to boot Win98, but it won't have the capability of editing the WinXP boot.ini, unless the WinXP is FAT32 and not NTFS.First of all, thanks for all the responses. I'm thinking now that the best course of action would be to just put the hard drive back in it's original tower, check it out and remove all personal data. |

Solve : Increase FSB?? |
Answer» I have a Intel core 2 Duo E5300 its on 800Mhz FSB is there a way of increasing this becasue my motherboard is a Asus p5kpl-cm and its capable of 1600/1333MHz. This most likely will have something to do with overclocking unless the FSB is totally limited or not even POSSIBLE to be made faster. All the info on OC'ing is at the ASUS site... All i do is go into the BIOS and change the AI Overclocking menue to 30% then when i save it and exit the computer shuts down and wont start up by itself. so i have to press the power button and start it and while its posting its shows the the CPU us on 2.6Ghz again. But i found the solution to it. There was a menu for the CPU that i had to change the menu's were 6.00-13.00, Stupidly i put the highest one on there and when i saved and restarted it, i went to the bios and looked at the CPU info nad it showed that i was on 1034Mhz FSB. I ALSO found out that if i do a manual overclock instead of the AI overclocking which didn't allow me to overclock to 30%, I an able to overclock to 3.4Ghz. This was pretty awesome till i tried to boot and i got the BSOD then i went back to the BIOS and lover the speed to 3.14Ghz then it worked but i dont really see and significant speed changes. Any other tips to how i can increase stability? |

Solve : Static ringing in my headphones.? |
Answer» I have lived with the killer white noise long enough, and I think its about time I asked for advice. It seems my computer will not stop giving off a low static noise that can be easily ignored while listening to music or videos, but between songs and while navigating its impossible to shut out. Is this a Desktop or a Laptop? Quote from: SlowGoing on August 12, 2010, 07:57:41 AM Unless it's the world's largest laptop............Ahh, yeah good point Quote from: Allan on August 12, 2010, 10:23:33 AM Unless it's the world's largest laptop............ You are right, this is a desktop. Also hahaha that was funny... no offense Tim. I wouldn't have even caught that ether. =D My pc has built in speakers that leave a lot to be desired, but I don't hear it from those speakers. I'm not sure if its because the static is so low I cant hear it when its at that distance but the static I'm typing about does not appear on my speakers although I do get a faint static from turning it up too high. I may be wrong but I believe most speakers do that, right? The static on my headphones does get slightly louder when I turn it up though. Long answer short, No I don't believe it does. This may be a silly question but have you tried a different set of head phones or tried those head phones on another device?Use the rear jacks....you may want to invest in an extension cable...available at Radio Shack or any electronics outlet.I normally use them as my I-Pod headphones so yes on that account, and every set of headphones so far does it.(3 or 4 sets so far...). Getting an extension would make nice a plan B, but I was hoping to fix it if at all possible before I try to avoid it. Thanks for the advice though, I'll keep it in mind.In my experience, audio static is almost always (but not always) a physical problem, often a problem with a jack or plug. Since you are having a problem with both the front and back jack, and have tried several different headphones, the problem must be something on the sound card if you have a separate one, or on the mother boards link to the jacks. Long shot: do you have an AM radio station nearby? Whatever, I think Patio's suggestion of an extension cord is your best bet. With my sound card, if I put my network card too close to it, I get constant static and audio aberrations (clicks, pops, buzzes, etc). This has happened in every PC I've worked with- if the audio card's vital organs aren't shielded, then any nearby RF device is going to cause problems. Currently, my gigabit NIC is built into my MOTHERBOARD, so it doesn't cause any problems for my sound card, which seems rather well shielded. However, if my wireless PCI card is enabled, suddenly it's click pop buzz city, and I swear it sounds like a flipping bug zapper in the middle of a cloud of mosquitos. This is despite both the wireless card and the sound card having their own anti-interference mechanisms. A few times in a few of my machines I've had this mysterious buzzing and other sound artifacts, and in most cases I just had to space out the components more from each other, or find a way to move the sound card away from the RF-noisy network card, and the problems either went away or were REDUCED to the point they were no longer an issue. Are you using the MOBO audio section or an after market card? Usually the noise from the MOBO card is due to a LOT of hash in the DC circuitry as the same power is supplied to the fan etc. The serial clocking of the mouse interface will also sort of back feed into the MOBO audio. With no music or other audio playing, listen carefully to the headphones as you move the mouse around. Do you hear some rapid hash (static) as the mouse moves? If so, all you can do is install an after market decent quality audio card. That will solve the problem Quote from: SlowGoing on August 12, 2010, 07:57:41 AM -The static seems to get louder when I go through specific actions. (mouse movements and starting windows media player seem to cause the most consistent changes) Mouse Static - Check Thanks for all your help guys, I think I might be able to get that extension and call it quits. |

Answer» No sound on my vista LAPTOP. Had to force shut down my computer cause it froze and then when i turned it back on i had no sound with an X over my speaker symbol. Under device MANAGER there is no Sound Video And Game Controllers option. Another weird thing is that when i turn my computer on for the first time in the MORNING, the audio works fine with the sound video and games CONTROLS option in device manager. But after a few minutes the sound stops working and after i restart my computer the computer will have no sound and the red x over the speaker and the sound video and games control is not present in device manager. This problem had been very frustrating and if you can help me solve this i will be extremely happy. |

Solve : Not Able to Enter Setup? |
Answer» I have an old 286 DOS comp at work that the backup battery died on. As a result when I started it up today I got the message I had to run setup ... which I did. I have no record of the settings so I tried the Auto feature but it did nothing but hang. Next I tried to manually install the HD stats by referring to a list of possibilities when I pressed F1, I think. There was about 40 choices so I thought I'll just go through them one by one and hopefully hit the right one. I did this a couple of times since it wouldn't boot ... just told me I had to run setup again. Now when it boots after it does it's memory check I get a "Non system disc error" and to remove the disc and put the right disc in. I've tried various key combos trying to get back into "Setup" but no go. |

Solve : Motherboard problem or a power supply problem??? |
Answer» I would appreciate any advice...The first problem that appeared with my pc was my modem quit working. A few days later my mouse quit working. While I was in control panel TRYING to add another mouse, my LCD screen went blank. I turned the LCD off and on again--the LCD brand logo appeared, then nothing. But my pc was still on. Is this a motherboard or power supply problem? Thanks for the help! There are two ways of going about testing the power supply.. You can swap in a supply of equal or greater wattage and if the problems go away, then you've found the culprit. If problems PERSIST, then the board is likely the problem. |

Solve : APC UPS cannot hibernate? |

Answer» I have APC Back-UPS ES 650Y-IN. My PC is dual-booted with Windows XP SP3 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit. The APC PowerChute Personal Edition 2.2 works fine in Windows 7. It can gracefully hibernate/shutdown the PC as per the runtime settings in the software. But the APC PowerChute Personal Edition 2.0 in Windows XP is unable to gracefully hibernate/shutdown the PC as per the runtime settings in the software. I have disabled several services in Windows XP. Could this be the reason? On which services the software has DEPENDENCY? Or could it be due to some bad drivers? |

Solve : Get advice about computer hardware?? |
Answer» I am GOING to start a new business of computer hardware. And i want to some suggestions that this decision is GOOD or not? Given the gross inadequacy of the information provided the very best advice i would give you at this point it to TOTALLY ignore anyone that says you "should" do it or the you "should not" do it. You need to evaluate your market potentials, you need to do a cost analysis of the startup costs and capital return potential in addition to MANY other things. In other words you need to develop a business plan. Once you have done that then you will NOT need to come on a forum and ask such an inappropriate question. truenorthI completely agree with truenorth. But, just wondering, what do you mean by "business of computer hardware"? Do you mean selling hardware, repairing computers, or what? A businessman from 1927 now getting into PC hardware? . You may be just a tad late. OH! By the way, welcome to CH. |

Solve : Drive D? |
Answer» As I have posted before, I have an eMachine 3400W desktop computer. I look under my computer on my desktop and the memory is low on my D drive, which was the secondary HARD drive install in the computer factory set. But I also noticed when I installed ANOTHER hard drive into the computer, there was actually only one hd so I'm thinking it's in with the c drive as well. Anyway, the capacity is 3.29 GB but free space is459 MB. MEANWHILE I can't save files onto it or even open it as it's the recovery partiation. I have ran disk clean up, defragmentation, and it says there is no files in it. My question is why is the memory going down in it, and would I be able to format it safely? Thank you very much. It's a hidden recovery partition and is best left alone... |

Solve : Can anybody help? random disconnection? |
Answer» not sure what area this really belongs in, so i put it here. Can anybody help me figure out how to get a FIRMWARE update for my westell modem E90-610014-06. I heard that was probably the problem with my connection dropping out randomly and very SLOW connection (actual download speed of about 30kbps on a line that is supposed to be 10.0 Mbps). And if somebody thinks there MIGHT be a different problem, that would be nice to know as well. I'm using vista, if that helps at all, and it cuts out while using Firefox and Internet explorer.Do you have only one computer connected to the modem? If so, you might swap your NIC card with a known good one and MAKE sure your driver is UPDATED. If it is the firmware, go to your ISP's site or the manufacturer's site and get the latest firmware update and follow their instructions on how to install it. I'd check to see if your ISP provides replacement modems free of charge....most do. |

Solve : pci-express puzzle? |
Answer» SIMPLE one please Can you connect any kind of pci express card to a pci-express x 16 slot ie ATI is a pci-express card Nvidia is a Pci-express card do they or can they both fit into the same pci-express type slot single card only not SLI or Crossfire my motherboard is crossfire compatible which i don't use i just WANT to fit a nvidia card in a single pci-express slot thank you i hope to god this make sense Quote Can you connect any kind of pci express card to a pci-express x 16 slot As long as they are x16 cards they are both compatible with x16, despite the Manufacturer. You may want to refer to the board manual, but I think if you want to use a single vid. card in a cross fire/SLI board, you have to use a determined slot..ie: only one of the two slots will WORK for single card setup.... Might want to double check on that as I said Quote from: grandpa_simpson on August 20, 2010, 01:04:42 AM As long as they are x16 cards they are both compatible with x16, despite the Manufacturer. they are simply PCI-E 16x slots. you can use either slot for a VIDEO card of either brand. The "special" feature is simply that the two slots can be used for SLI. They are still standard PCI-E 16x slots despite this.Yes you are right, I had a second look at a RANDOM board manual with SLI capabilites.. I guess I read it incorrectly at some point..Thank you so very much for the great advice now i can go get the nvidia card i want Thank you all for the time you took to reply to my post Your sincerely me |

After all, to my understanding he only owns/works in a repair shop. you NEVER see people there, they send their dogs in with the computers and you have to interpret the barks. He even has a name tag that says "Dog WHISPERER". EDIT: useless trivia: did you know that the dog language has over 200 different conjugations for "bone"?More useless trivia. Solve : which Graphics Card !!? |
Answer» Hi all, SLI enables you to run 2 vid cards in one system... Thanks for that, But why would you do that, wouldn't be better to buy a better card in the first place !!!! Ned Quote from: ned1 on August 15, 2010, 10:16:45 AM Thanks for that, Why do we have dual core machines, wouldn't it be better to have a faster processor? by which I mean, the reason we have dual core machines is because A:) not all problems can be solved quickest sequentially B:) the clock speed of most modern CPUs are starting to approach a number of scientific barriers. In the same vein, GPUs and their cost/performance tradeoff can sometimes make buying a second card and SLI or Crossfiring it with your current card give you more "bang for your BUCK". Think of it as merely opening yet another set of upgrade options. For example, if you had, say, a 9500GT, you could replace it entirely with the latest spanker, or, you could buy a second 9500GT for a significant savings, and almost double your performance in most games. It depends entirely on ones funds and what they want to do- sometimes using crossfire or SLI is a good idea, sometimes it can be a better idea to simply get a newer card altogether.Bc Programmer, I see your point......as my Ge Force 7950GT is playing up and have to replace it can you recommended a replacement for photo work and games for less than £100 that I will be able to double up (SLI) at a later date if necessary. Thanks for any help in this matter Ned ps Just looking at this card, GeForce 9800 GT Green Edition 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card, what do people think good/bad you might want to search Newegg Quote from: 2x3i5x on August 15, 2010, 07:18:20 PM you might want to search Newegg I am in the UK...............not sure it's worth it with the import taxes etc. Thanks anyway Ned Quote from: ned1 on August 16, 2010, 12:24:06 AM I am in the UK...............not sure it's worth it with the import taxes etc. it's still a userful SITE, even if you don't buy there, i meant there's a lot of customer reviews on various cards, you probably want to LOOK at those.Fpr udner £100 your options are limited to basically the ATI 5750 or the Nvidia 8800/9800GT. Either is a huge upgrade from your current card (which is roughly equivalent to a 9500GT) but not worth the money at their respective price points. If you buy used, you can get better value - something that you may find interesting is this - it's a refurb card with less warranty, but much faster than either of those two cards. It's still old tech though, as is the 4850 however the 4850 is a better buy than the two new cards I mentioned. If you can stretch your budget to around £150, the Nvidia GTX460 is the best bang for buck card available now, period. Quote from: patio on August 15, 2010, 09:22:06 AM SLI enables you to run 2 vid cards in one system... Hi, Do they have to be identical cards or will any card work as long as it's also SLI !! I believe the GPU's have to be the same... Quote from: patio on August 19, 2010, 06:51:04 AM I believe the GPU's have to be the same... Yes, the GPU's have to be the same, I believe it goes for the brand as well as model. But if you go for crossfire, you can mix and match different GPU's I believe as long as they're compatible Quote from: patio on August 19, 2010, 06:51:04 AM I believe the GPU's have to be the same... I thought that they only had to be the same type and generation e.g. Nvidia GeForce 9800GT & Nvidia GeForce 9500GT ATI Radeon 5550 & ATI Radeon 5670 -non working examples- Any Nvidia & ATI combination Nvidia GeForce 9800GT & Nvidia Geforce GTS 250 Anyway, as everyone here loves to send people to new egg might I suggest a UK alternative. Novatech have never steered me wrong over the years, although ebuyer will probably give you a cheaper deal their customer service is appalling and nothing I have ever bought from them has lasted. www.novatech.co.uk www.ebuyer.co.uk |

Solve : Is It Possible To Buy A New Computer Without Hard Drive?? |
Answer» I unfortunately have a Dell Inspiron E5105 - My AC adapter / power supply stopped charging completely for the 4th time and the computer is near dead and the charger wont make connection with the computer. ...Anyways, at this point I've invested more than the price of the laptop into repairs, and it's time for a new laptop. The hard drive is still in perfect tact, so is there such a thing as buying a computer without a hard drive and just installing mine to save money?Unfortunately, you have discovered that laptops are "disposable computers". Pretty much unrepairable by most, except for the very experienced technician. Dells are no better or worse than anyone elses; their "self-help" online support is about the best. Standard telephone support is abysmal. Hard drives are so inexpensive now it's not even worth considering using your old one. You can sell the entire computer for parts; should be able to get at least $100.Thank you everyone for your help! I guess I'm just headed on mission for the best price now - I still am not getting another Dell. I agree with the last comment as far as having to accept that laptops are disposable - but This issue STARTED a week into the brand new comp - and with the amount of other people experiencing the exact same issue, I think Dell's may be cheaper built than others. An additional note - I had a Dell prior to this one - it died because of the exact same issue. I think if you spend $1200 on a laptop - it should make it more than a year. Anyone have any opinions on HP vs. Toshiba? And I'm no longer able to afford a $1200 model - so I'm looking at spending half that - if anyone has any suggestions, I'm totally open! Thank you!It would help us if you could define your intended use of the laptop. The price range you hope to achieve. Also your home country could help if a recommendation is from an on-line source as they may or may not deliver to foreign shores.Be patient some assistance will come as you answer the preceding questions. truenorthHi, For Sure! Here's info on what I need... Usage: - Basic Personal Use - Photo Editing - Wireless Internet Capability - Testing the websites I build on my Mac in IE - so that's the reason for needing a PC. - iTunes and music listening Location - California, US I will basically just need to be able to install my main current programs from my old PC... - Adobe Photoshop CS2 for PC (Previously installed it on Windows Vista) - Dreamweaver 8 for PC (Previously installed it on Windows Vista) - wsftp Home Specs - 2 to 3 GB Ram is fine - 17 inch screen Price Range I'm reallllllly broke so I'm not so sure how realistic my price range is, but I'd love to find something in the $450 to $700 range if it's possible? A laptop is a secondary computer for me, so I don't need it to be amazing. I just need it to be reliable, portable and capable. I was looking at the Toshiba Satellite but just barely started browsing, so any suggestions on brands would be awesome! Thank you! Quote from: prettyprincess on August 15, 2010, 04:01:23 PM ...Anyone have any opinions on HP vs. Toshiba? And I'm no longer able to afford a $1200 model ...HP. Your 17" screen requirement is what's pushing the price high.Well, if you can forgo the 17" screen and really want to keep the price to a minimum, I suggest this one from Staples: Compaq Presario CQ62-225NR 15.6" Laptop. Looks like the current selling price is a special, temporary, promotional price, so you might need to act soon. I have a Compaq Presario F572US notebook PC I bought 3 years ago and it's worked out fine for me. Just a thought, if your primary machine is a Mac, and you are using a PC to check your web site, why not check out the used market on EBay or Craigslist. You could probably pick up two or three different machines for less than a new one. That would let you see how your web site looks on different OSs and processors, and different memory sizes.Awesome Suggestions - Thank you! And I can totally forgo the 17 inch of that's the main price pusher. Thank you everyone!Given your CA location you may well be in close proximity to a "Fry's". If Soybean's suggestion does not meet your fancy then i would suggest that you check them out as they always feature a deal on a desktop and a laptop in their weekly flyers. However it needs to be mentioned that while their flyers mention a great variety of products at often awesome prices those same prices are not necessarily reflected in their "bricks and mortar" store prices. So if you see something in the flyer call the store to see if they can match it (you may save on delivery charges). Unless you decide to act on soybean's time sensitive OFFER i believe more suggestions will be forthcoming. Very fine job on defining your needs by the way.truenorth http://www.frys.com/prettyprincess, If your still around here is this weeks Fry's on-line add. Take note of the laptop offer in the upper left corner of the 1st page. If your short on cash and just need something to get you through the need for a laptop for a few years perhaps that would do the trick. truenorth http://www.frys.com/category/Outpost/Notebooks+&+Tablets/Notebooks?site=frysecampaignHey! Thank you! I ACTUALLY ended up ordering the Compaq that Soybean linked to. I appreciate everyone's help! Thank you!!!! |

Solve : cpu running but there is no display on my LCD? |
Answer» i m having a desktop with AMD motherboard, sempron processor, nvidea VGA card,2 gb ddr2 ram and 180 gb hard disk. on gettting the power it says no signal digital and then becomes black ie no display, but the HDD led remains at it state without blinking I would try taking the graphics card out and placing it back in, if it is showing no signal like you say then I think it could be the graphics card. Do you have another one you could try in there if resetting it doesn't WORK?You may also want to look at the connections to the graphics card and monitor to make sure they are connected properly. i had removed the graphics card and then again placed but it doesnt work hav checked the connection it seems ok and i dont hav another to check . wht to be done next?Do you have onboard graphics on that motherboard? Do you have vga aswell as hdmi on the back of your graphics card? If so I would try connecting it to the other slot, like hdmi to vga.i dont see any fan in my graphics card its a 128 mb graphics card for the vga port i dont hav the cord for it I would look at it been the card first and I suggest you borrow one of a friend to test it?how coul i boot when i dont hav the display and dont know what is happening with the system when no displey is dere what could be the problem with HDD led which displays in continuous manner ie . doesnt blink at allI was testing one thing at a time for you before going on to the next thing, but since you cannot get hold of these things I'm not sure if I can help you anymore. Without a display how do you expect to be able to diagnose certain problems? Say like if you disconnected the hard drive the display would show on screen that there was a harddrive ERROR..etc. However, you dont have a dispay so it lead me to believe it was the graphics card or monitor problem maybe.u r correct , i will check with ur suggistions it may help with display thanks |

Solve : Acer Aspire and compaq presario no display? |

Answer» That WOULD be the BEST approach...any idea how to fix the acer aspire 2920Z laptop sir? Quote Before it was felt down on the floor but i tried to turn it on and it seems ok Yes sometimes it will be, but what about the other time it will not... So given that you --> Quote already disassemble the acer aspire 2920Z sir and clean every thing, remove the cmos battery, put a thermal compound in the cpu hit sink but still when i turn it on the cpu fan turn for about 3 to 5 seconds then after that nothing happen. It's time for ISOLATING certain hardware components if its still replaceable based on your post/s. 1. Graphics card --> Given it is an on-board GC device on your laptop(or is not? depends on specs), Does this device can contribute to the cause? Yes. 2. What's also in connection with no display? As Mroilfield had just asked you and posted: Quote Have you tried hooking either laptop to an external monitor and then turning them on? Doing this will rule out the possibility that it could be the screens themselves that are bad.3. RAM modules --> If you have reseatted one or if there are two RAM in your laptop, have you tried isolating either one or just used one RAM on one slot and alternately using either two slots and rebooted? Then what result it gives? 4. Cables --> Have you rechecked all plugs and cables are placed properly and seated and in good form? 5. Motherboard --> If you had a negative result on #2, then it might be the mobo. Quote from: jason2074 on September 12, 2010, 06:37:41 AM 1. Graphics card --> Given it is an on-board GC device on your laptop(or is not? depends on specs), Does this device can contribute to the cause? Yes. The model is Acer aspire 2920Z Quote Is your ACER aspire with an HDMI port/adaptor? To be able to connect another monitor for testing. A BIOS update found on other threads referred to no display may vary on your issue. DO NOT clean your motherboard with any water/water mixed with thinner. I suggest you try first the external monitor test if you have the hdmi port. You have also mention that you tested another RAM module from another laptop. Do they have the same type as the one you replaced? Otherwise it will not be readable or compatible and can also cause error and shutdowns. Is your 512 DDR2 RAM module from your ACER laptop the original or a replaced one? |

Solve : Disk Boot Failure insert system disk and press enter?? |
Answer» For some reason each time I start my computer I keep getting a message that reads"Disk Boot Failure insert SYSTEM disk and press enter." When I insert the disk and press enter it then boots into windows vista. However, I don't want to have to keep doing this and would appreciate it if someone could suggest a fix? I have windows vista 32bit installed on one drive and windows 7 on another drive in the computer. I don't use the windows 7, and I mainly boot into vista if that helps. Thanks!!Try This...I tried to do the easy bdc, but UNFORTUNATELY it didn't WORK. However, I wasn't able to do the last thing it suggested as it said that my boot folder might me locked and needs deleting. It did say I could delete this boot folder using either the live recovery CONSOLE or another method. Can you please explain how I delete this boot folder and also if I run the risk of not been able to boot into vista if it all goes wrong. Thanks!!No...follow the instructions for repairing it from within Vista...I tried the repair using the windows vista disk and it REPORTS that it couldn't find a fault. I am still getting the same message and still have to use the vista disk to boot into windows. |

Solve : Computer doesn't turn on because of internal battery or motherboard?? |

Answer» I couldn't get my emachine w3052 with Xp to turn on (had this problem before and a thorough cleaning took care of it) so I cleaned it again. This time I made the mistake of taking the internal battery out (left out over 24 hours) and now when I put everything back together, I get that funny British siren sound so I unplugged it immediately. I tried plugging it in again and nothing, no sound, power, etc. I removed everything except for MONITOR and keyboard and still nothing. Is there any hope or does this mean my motherboard is fried? Thank you for any expert advise and help!!!!.Check your RAM and reseat. The internal battery is to save your CMOS settings and all you did by removing it is to reset the setting back to factory. Your computer will START on factory specs. By "removed everything except for monitor and keyboard" did you mean that you took out the RAM and other internal parts or did you just take off the external stuff, ie the printer, scanner and the like? If you took out the RAM and plugged it back it you should have gotten a beep code of 3 beeps. If you didn't get any beep code, then your MB is toast. If you took off the external stuff, that shouldn't have stopped your computer from starting.Hello, I couldn't get my emachine w3052 with Xp to turn on (had this problem before and a thorough cleaning took care of it) so I cleaned it again. Thank you for any expert advise and help!!!!. When you say 'no power' do you mean that when you try to turn the machine on you get no response at all? Or do the FANS spin up. Does the motherboard light up whilst plugged into the MAINS (not turned on just plugged in)? Option 1 if you're getting power to the mobo: Then try checking all your connections (RAM, graphics, fan connectors, the works). Option 2 if your getting no power to the mobo at all: Then change the fuse in the power cable or test the cable in something else, they're pretty standard. If the cable is fine then test the computer with another power supply, you may need to replace it. Option 3 if you replace the power supply and you still get beep codes: Reconnect everything in the PC as in 'Option 1'. Solve : Problem with laptop turning on.........? |
Answer» I have a Dell Studio 15 ( Studio 1555) that is just a little over 1 year old. I used it one night everything ran fine, go to turn it on in the MORNING and it won't turn on. I pulled the battery out then put it back in, it turned on for about an hour then shut off. SOMETIMES it'll turn on, sometimes it won't, any ideas on what I should start to trouble shoot first, thank.......Power CABLE might be a good place to start. Do you get a charging or A/C symbol or light whilst the laptop is plugged in? If not then it's probably a charger fault. If the laptop is displaying an A/C connection then try the laptop without the battery. Blue light on the charging adapter will come on, white light on laptop will come on. If the laptop does turn on it'll show that the battery is charging, but loses charge in about one hour. I haven't been able to get the laptop to turn on without the battery in it. If I remove the battery then put it back in sometime the laptop will turn on and runs fine. I'll shut it off when I'm done USING it, go to turn it back on in the morning and nothing happens What version of Operating System do you have since one year old should be Windows 7. What version of Operating System do you have since one year old should be Windows 7.What version of Operating System do you have since one year old should be Windows 7. What possible difference would that make? Each version of windows had different ways of displaying the power options properties. Have you checked the configuration for the battery? WHAT configuration? Under the Control Panel for Power Options. There the system can be configured to go to Stand By or power off when the battery get to X% when running on battery only. Windows 7 looks different from XP. Is the system shutting down or going to sleep or hibernate mode to conserve power. What is the power light on the laptop doing (flash on/off or completely off?) I have also had the issue when the system was in stand by mode pressing the power button did nothing. Turned out the power switch was faulty. Did you bother to read his post? Or understand it? Did read. I have also have a dell laptop the battery died after about a year where it would only last for about 40 minutes or less on a charge. Replaced the battery had no problems. Hope this clarifies what I was trying to say. |

Solve : burning dvd's? |
Answer» I'm new at this so I hope Burning CDs/DVDs uses a lot of CPU power, thus creating a lot of heat. It has been a while, but I seem to remember that while observing with Speedfan, that ImgBurn used a *LOT* less CPU, than CDBurnerXP. I've no idea why..... (As a matter of fact, I wonder why burning a CD uses much CPU anyway. ) While not a true 'fix', perhaps the original poster might get by, if using a different burning program? Quote from: WillyW on August 18, 2010, 08:47:22 AM
Converting the original video format to mpeg-2 for a DVD will use CPU. Likewise mp3 audio to PCM for audio CDs. The actual burning doesn't use the CPU very much at all. Quote from: SALMON Trout on August 18, 2010, 09:35:35 AM .... That's what I was thinking when I commented. I failed to mention that in my case, it was simply burning data to save. No converting of music, etc. That's why it caught my attention. OK you guys it has shut down while was watching something on line, and i do know that the revving NOISE is from a small fan at the top of my computer,I'm just TRYING to narrow this down to fix it ,thanks for all your help!!Did you download SpeedFan yet? This fault has all the earmarks of a heat issue. However just to really confirm it there are 2 things you can do. Run a test on your computers heat creation over a period of time (speed fan) as has been recommended by Broni. However you can also open the side of the tower case and using a fan blow air into the side that is open and see if the computer behaves better. This should not be viewed as a permanent fix. Only to further indicate the need to address a cooling problem. You may have a fan that is failing. Or the one that is revving may be doing so as another fan is failing or has failed. Given that your problem exists in more than one situation i would urge prompt action to address your heat situation before more catastrophic events arise. truenorth OK so I'm actually encoding the downloaded video, when it shuts down.any body know of a faster encoding software, this takes about 1:30 min. some times more, then it heats up and bingo,by the way I did down load speed fan ,and saw the heat in my comp. Quote and saw the heat in my compThere you go...can we see the numbers? <------feels like a dentist... Quote from: Broni on August 21, 2010, 09:23:08 PM There you go...can we see the numbers? I strongly urge you to address the issue by answering the questions that you are being asked. Stop making us feel like (as Broni says) we are pulling teeth here. Solve : Mixing PC100 low density with PC133 high density? |
Answer» Hi : Can someone tell me if i can mix 256mb PC100 LOW density ram with 256mb PC133 high density ram on a OLD Dell Optiplex GX100?The issue is not MIXING the 2 TYPES, but whether the computer is able to recognize the high density properly. Some machines won't even POST, others will see the 256MB high density as 128MB, and some will see it properly. |
