Solve : windows 98 sytem admin + modem?

Answer»

I have format c and reloaded windows HOWEVER I am have toruble with driver getting windows to recognise internal modem.  I am also connecting to my other comp via belkin wireless and TRYING to load the adsl connection but it wont let me saying I have to be a system adminstrator.  unlike win xp there is not a facility for this in users and I wondered how I become so in win 98.  I have had all this up and running before with no probs do not understand whats going WRONG.  Have spent days on it now and would appreciate any help....no doubt a silly error i'm making somewhere but i just can't seem to FIX itUnlike WinXP, Win98 needs drivers that are not "built-in".  Your modem needs drivers from the MANUFACTURER of the modem.  There are no administrative functions in Win98.  If you are trying to connect via the other computer (WinXP), that is the one that is asking for "Administrator", i.e., the WinXP computer won't allow the Win98 computer to access it without you giving it the password (for the WinXP computer).

If your Belkin is a wireless router, you should not have any problem connecting to the router.  I have a wired router, just plug in and go.

Solve : AT case for new ATX Motherboard??

Answer»

I'm shopping for a NEW PC and I'd like to USE my old AT DESKTOP case (true desktop, not a tower) to build my new machine.  I know I'll need a higher-wattage POWER supply.  Can I modify the AT case to use with an ATX Motherboard?

I'd buy a new true desktop (not Tower) case if I could find one.  No one seems to make them anymore.  Any suggestions?

Thx, GS GSGS....I'm curious , why would you want to do that .....seems like you want to go backwards.......There is a reason that atx cases appeared .........the older at cases wouldnt hold the necessary items .........

Solve : P4 3.0 ghz vs. AMD Athlon 64 3400+?

Answer»

Okay, FIRST post...

I'm shopping for a new PC.  I'm trying to determine if the AMD Athlon 64-bit 3400+ processor is WORTH the extra money over a P4 3.0ghz?  Which one will perform better?  My use is general in nature; Microsoft Office, Internet, burning CDs & DVDs, and kids games.  Will the 64-bit AMD prepare my machine for 64-bit applications?

Thx

GSAmd is geared more towards EXTREME gaming.both processors will be able to support the new 64-bit OPERATING systems. You have to decide your budget.I prefer intel only because they are easier to find parts for and are more plentiful.Amd is hard to find where I'm from. You shouldnt need much more than the intel p4  3.0.that will RUN well for a while.

Solve : PC always suddenly turn off by itself?

Answer»

My PC always suddenly TURN off by itself. Sometimes if I'm lucky enough I can use it for 1 hour, but most of the time, only 1/2 hour or less and then it will just turn off by itself in the middle of my work unpredictably. When I try to turn the computer on again, it usually turn on for less than 1 minute ( not even enough time to boot Windows or even go to bios menu ).

I've tried everything from changing the power supplies ( before I have 300 Watt but I've UPGRADE to 450 Watt ) but it does not seem to HELP. I have Athlon XP 2000  with Asus A7V266-C Motherboard. My Ide is all full ( both primary & secondary, master and slave ) with 1 CDRW, 1 DVD Rom and 2 Hard DRIVE. Memory is 512 Mb DDR SDRam.

Does anyone know what is the reason and how to solve this problem? Any help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
Could be overtemp and the mobo is shutting itself off.  Monitor temps of CPU and hard drives. Also, speaking of overheating.... Have your heatsink checked-out... You never know... I just had another computer user Instant Message me about a VERY similar issue, and it turns out that the heat sink was bad... Have a look at that... Also, have you checked for viruses?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I'm having a similar problem, I let my PC sit overnight and it still does the same thing, I thought that it may be the hard drive, but I started it up without the hard drive in it, and it did the same thing. I can't get windows to boot up or anything. I was told that it may be the battery, so...off to Wal-Mart I will go, and if that isn't it, I will have the heatsink checked

Solve : Freezing Up Randomly?

Answer»

First, I'm SO glad you all are here. Thanks in advance.

Every 10 minutes or so my MOUSE and KEYBOARD lock up. The WHOLE systems freezes for about 2 minutes, then comes back to life. It makes absolutely no difference what program I'm working with - everything is fair game. I've run adware scans, registry fixers, spy doctors, cleaned and defragged. I've run out of ideas.
I'm on a Gateway 256, Win98. Any and all assistance is welcomed. You NEVER mentioned that you have Antivirus software... You DO, right? Also, did this JUST happen like a day ago? If so, then have you installed any new hardware/software during that time?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Sorry for the imcomplete info, Flame. I have not installed any new hardware recently, and have several virusscan programs /adware/etc installed. I've run them all. This freeze up problem has been going on for about 3 weeks, and seems to be getting worse.
Ideas? Hope???

Solve : Frustrating startup issue?

Answer»

About a week ago, I started having issues with my computer's startup. It would get to the point where WINDOWS was beginning to load, slow/stutter, and eventually freeze. After experimenting with the problem a bit and trying a number of things to get it running again, I noticed that these stutters were accompanied by a clicking noise from some device in my computer.  I did a lot of plugging/unplugging, and discovered that the clicking noise was coming from the hard disk somehow.

The research I did suggested that this kind of clicking, accompanied by the inability to get the computer to boot, is indicative of a dying hard drive. I've been planning to upgrade my hard drive for a while anyway, so I went ahead and replaced it with a much nicer drive. Of course, this also means that EVERYTHING on my computer is starting from ground ZERO; I did not attempt to copy files from my old hard drive. I've got backups I can use to restore my personal files, and at this point all I have installed on the new drive is Windows and some drivers/software for all of my hardware, as well as a few crucial programs - Firefox, Thunderbird and Trillian.

As I'm sure you've figured out by now (since I'm posting this), the startup problems have not gone away. However, they have decreased in severity quite a bit. The new hard drive seems able to push past the issue and get into Windows.

Here are some specifics about the problem...

1) It only occurs after the computer has been powered down for a while; at least 45 minutes.

2) Now that I am able to get the computer to start up, I notice significant decreases in performance if I keep it running. Restarting the computer after a glitched boot solves this problem.

3) The clicking noise does not occur at regular intervals. It seems random, ie, it could be click - 3 second PAUSE - click click and on another startup - click - slight pause - click click click.

4) The old HDD was IDE. The new drive is S/ATA.

If anybody could tip me off to some other possible culprits I would really, really appreciate it. I'm at my wit's end with this.

Some specs - let me know if this isn't enough information.

MOBO: A7N8X Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2700+
Power SUPPLY: Antec TrueBlue 380W
1GIG Kingston 512MB 3200 DDRAM
Hard Drive: 160GB Seagate Barracuda S/ATA 7200RPM

My old drive was a Maxtor 80GB IDEIf the clicking noise is truly coming from the hard drive, I suspect heat is the problem.  Newer hard drives need cooling almost as much as the CPU.  Download HDD thermometer and post back with your temps.

http://www.rsdsoft.com/hdd-thermometer/index.phpThanks...for some reason I can't get this thing to detect my S/ATA drive but I'll keep fiddling with it.

Still...I have to wonder...could this really be a heat issue if the problem only occurs on cold startups?

Solve : CPU and Fans Question?

Answer»

I have a old 5 year old PC that runs great. But i wanted to upgrade my CPU, the max my computer can reconise for cpu is 850Mhz. I brought one but... the fan doesn't fit LOL. So i was wondering if i can use my old computer fan to cool it down? The old fan is smaller but it doesnt seem i have any options

Current Computer Setting
Intel (R) Celeron 500Mhz
Intel (R) Video card 8MB
PC100 RAM 64MB
Maxtor 12.6 +25.5GB

If you KNOW anything about this then please reply.

Also I do not know how pentium II processers work they look like they dont have a fan so i dont know how to snap them in place lol. Please note I only have experiences with 5 year old and older PC's,Windows98........you will have to get a heat sink and fan that are designed for the processor you have bought .......
The best way to improve the performance would be to increase the Ram .......64mb isnt a whole lot ......

dl65  The processor did come with a fan but the problem is it doesn't fit. The fan is big but thats not the problem. The problem is that dang thing that you use to snap it on to hold it on the CPU, its to SHORT (lol) So is it a good idea to KEEP it 500Mhz or is there a special fan u need. I have a small fan that came with a 466mhz CPU

Solve : Video Card installation??

Answer»

I am trying to install a GeForce FX5500 and am having problems. I turned computer off, installed card, then booted up. It found my card and installed it and SAID I must restart. So I did, but when booting up, it gets to the Windows loading screen and then goes black right before where you enter your password. It will not go past that at all. The only way I can use my computer is if I take the video card out and just use the onboard video card. I can not figure anything else out. PLEASE HELP!!! Any help is appreciated. As strange as it sounds..... YOU ARE IN LUCK! I recently had the SAME video card, with the same PROBLEM.... How old is your computer? What kind is it? Chances are, it is NOT compatible with your system...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well, I have a Dell Dimension 2400. Here are my specs: Celeron 2.4GH, 40GB HD, 128MB RAM, Windows XP, Intel 845GV chip set.
Thanks again for any input.Did you read the minimum system requirements? You MIGHT need more than 128 MB to use the card.... Although, you really SHOULD have more than 128 MB to run Windows XP to start with..... Also, can your computer handle an 8X video card? Mine couldn't, which is why I had my problem...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yah I'm getting another 256MB RAM, so I should have 384MB. Also, this is a PCI card, I don't have AGP. What do ya think.Cash can be saved...what wrong with USING intels graphic accelerator??>http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/index.htm?iid=ipp_845gvchpst+hghlt_iaa&Well... Is this an AGP card?

[glb]Flame[/glb]MoPo.....Did you disable the onboard vid card ? ....that COULD be the problem ...and the other thing that come to mind is did you have the monitor connected to your new pci vid card or was it plugged into the old onboard card ?

let us know

dl65  I have a SIMILAR problem with FX 5200.  However the card worked fine for a while, but now the same problem is happening to me.  Though, it only happens when I install the drivers for the card.  It works with the default drivers, but not with its own.

Solve : Computer/Netowrking Issue?

Answer» HELLO,

My problem involves my family’s printer and our network. In our house we have 2 computers. The computer which the printer hooked up to in my room we’ll call “Family computer” and the other, which my dad uses, ill refer to as “Work computer”

The issue is that from Family Computer, my dad usually can from Work computer when it is logged into MY ACCOUNT. And even then, it sometimes does not work. These two computers share a ROUTER and they both have a working internet connection.

Work computer sometimes can see this computer (Family computer) from it’s “My Network Places” and sometimes it can’t.

My question is WHY is this HAPPENING and how can I fix it? Do I need to re-establish the network ALTOGETHER? Right now, my dad just printed something off successfully while the computer was logged into MY account. When the computer is in my brother’s, sister’s, or mother’s account, it won’t print. Please help!

Solve : Weird Harware problem?

Answer»

Hi

So i brought my computer to a LAN party where we were gonna play this game CALLED World of Warcraft. I set up my computer and everything runs fine after installing the game i think that I should get some
more RAM into my computer before play.  I borrow a stick of 512 DDR ram and attempt to place it in my computer. Little do i realise that the motherboard only fits the older stuff (PCI?)  So I actually manage to fit the DDR ram in and then I startup. The computer gets power, the light under the cd tray flashes a few times, then the computer remains stuck in limbo. The screen recieves nothing and the light flashes on and off, SHOWING it has no signal, but also the computer doesn't go into its classic startup sequence (i can tell from the monotone whiring of the fans and my dimm power light and unflashing 'thinking light' (the one right by the power light that blips red whenever the computer is crunching something). I take out the ram and start and the same thing occurs. I move AROUND the ram, and chech for bad CONNECTIONS, i do this several times then give up. Im not sure what the problem is, as an aside i had broken one of the two side clasps where the ram goes when trying to fit in DDR. Can you help me? Is this a problem with the hardrive (i can't see how it would be), the ram (possible but i tried all the combos, even with just a single stick) or could it be the motherboard
(i think most likely as i applies quite a bit of pressure trying to get the DDR in)?

Thanks for all your time
AnglosaxonSure sounds like you broke the motherboard trying to force the wrong type of ram into it.Nothing else could be to blame!yeah thanks, does anyone else have a more definate answer from me. Though i trust anyone willing to help, i would like to hear from a senior memberHi there! After looking at your description on the issue.... I have two questions for you.... First, what type of RAM is this? (PC133, etc.) Also, how much RAM can your computer "take" at the maximum? You need to make sure that it is compatible first, and that your computer can handle it... Keep in touch...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Consider the obvious, older computers do not take ddr,you can tell by the pin configuration of the ram.If you had to force it into the slot and actually broke the retaining tabs, something is wrong. If you removed all the ram and installed the original ram you had in it and it still dont work then suspect the motherboard is broken. The ram in my computer is PC133 and my motherboard is an Intel D845HV which can hold 3GB of memoryLet's get this straight.   You forced 184-pin DDR memory chip into a 168-pin SDRAM memory slot.  You jammed the square peg into the round hole and the hole isn't round anymore.

You killed your motherboard and probably the DDR memory you borrowed.  You won't be invited to LAN parties anymore.Wow, I sure hope I didn't screw up his RAM. Yeah, I took my computer to my local repair place and it was the motherboard, thanx for everything guys, but it looks like im just gonna have to shell out $700 for some serious upgrading.

Solve : Video Card problems Need Help PLz!!?

Answer»

Ok well about a year ago i BOUGHT a GeForce 2 Mx/Mx 400, i had it installed in to my EMACHINE, Well i have recieved a newer computer, (Compaq Presario 1.1 GHZ) well i am wanting to swap my GeForce 2 in to this computer, I have attempted before to take it out, and place it in this one, and i have had it in my Compaq but, my mom is using my Emachine just to search the web and well, it comes up with a display error everytime you log in, and well it won't keep any settings you put in, it puts it in 640x480 16 colors, which my mom doesn't like this, So only way i can get it to stop doing this is putting the Ge Force back in to the Emachine, How can i take it out, and have it use the graphic card that it has, i believe its a ATI Rage Pro, i have tried delete all display hardware from the device manager, and well it started up and well it wouldn't detect the ATI Rage, i put it back in the Geforce and it detected both at the same time, I would love any help on how I can get this in to my Compaq as i use it to game now instead of my old Emachine, Sorry for such a long post, but thanks for any help.

TripHave you properly installed your drivers for the card? Also.... That was quite a risk that you took there... Taking and older card, and putting it into a new computer, or a new card into an old computer, is NOT very safe... It might nt be compatible.... ALWAYS CONSULT your computer manufacturer before making any upgrades...

[glb]Flame[/glb]ok, the Geforce2 Mx/Mx 400 was put in about a year or so ago, and well about 6 months ago i got my Compaq, and i am justing wanting to swap the Geforce in to my Compaq, but i want my Emachine to run off its original video card, I have checked with everything, it is compatiable with both my computers, and i have had the Geforce in my new computer for about a month while my mom wasn't using my old Emachine, but now she is, and i need to find out, how i can have it run right off the old video card, does this help you all any? If not ask me what yah need to know, so i can figure this out and run my Geforce 2 in my Compaq so my games run smoother, thanks TripHello, how are you? Well friend, I think first try to disable the builtin or onboard video card in your compaq system before instaling GFORCE card. If this will solve your problem then ok otherwise you have to make sure that you are running the same operating system on your Compaq as on the older system. SECONDLY, make sure that, your GFORCE is FULLY compatable with your Compaq system. Also try to download latest driver for your video card.

Hope this will completely solve your problem. Take care of you and others and be happy.
Bye...
Dur-E-WahabThe best way to find out if the card is compatible is to contact the system manufacturer...

[glb]Flame[/glb]ok i have had it in my compaq, my new computer, it runs perfect, its just when its in my compaq my old computer the Emachine won't run right with its builtin video card, My compaq is fine, i just need to figure out why, when i let my Emachine run off its built in video card, why does it, keep setting the display back down to the lowest setting, everytime you log in to it, you get a message saying display setting are not compatiable or something, and that you need to readjust the settigs, i do the resetting, and then it has to restart, and well it just comes back up again, with no chance, what causes this? I just need my Emachine running off its Builtin Video card, so i can use my Geforce, on my Compaq, if only my mom didn't want my old computer err, i wouldn't have this problem, but she has to use it, lol, so plz guys help me out.

Solve : hard drives C & D low disc space issue?

Answer»

hello,

/i;ve got two drives (RP_D which is is around 4BG & then C which is almost 70GB). D is showing MAXED out, but I have close to 60GB of free space on my C drive. However, I keep getting "low disc space" errors, but when I follow the message to do "clean-up", it directs me to the RP_D drive & nothing I do CLEARS space. I can't do basic funtions like printing because of no space, yet my C drive has nearly 60GB free. EVERYTHING is responding to my D drive & not recognizing the C.  Is there a reason my C drive is not being recognized as the primary drive? Is there something I need to do in the device manager or somewhere else to redirect it in some way? Sorry, I just have no clue what's going on and it's frustrating to not be able to function due to errors that say "no space on RP_D" when I've got 60GB on C.  Anyway, if you can help me understand what's going on and how to CORRECT it, i'd apprecieate it. thanks!

Solve : 3.5" disk drive installation problem?

Answer»

I have an HP pavilion xt948 computer in which I installed a new (old one was no good) 3.5" drive.

However, I am getting the following messages when I insert a 3.5" diskette that has information already on it.

(1) DISK NOT FORMATTED
The disk in drive A is not formatted.
Do you want to format it now?
     (two boxes) YES/NO

If I click NO, nothing more happens.

If I click YES:

(2) FORMAT 3.5" FLOPPY (A)
There is no disk in drive A.
Insert disk, and then TRY again
     (one box) OK

When you click OK,

(3) DISK NOT FORMATTED
The disk in drive A cannot be formatted
    (one box) OK

I was CAREFUL to be SURE I inserted the wires exactly as I had taken them out of the other drive.

Suggestions?  I have rebooted the computer several times.
Sounds like a bad disk.Try another!

Solve : Black screen freezing?

Answer»

Okay, so I've been having this issue for a few months now.  It started out small and didn't occur that often, and now I can't run my computer for more than 2 minutes without it happening.  I've been playing World of Warcraft, and my computer would lockup/freeze to a black screen at random points while playing.  Many other people playing the game have also had this issue, and it seems that it only occurs with custom built PCS.  Processor and video card type make no difference, it occurs with both ATI and nVidia, Pentium and AMD.  It may or may not be the exact same problem for every one, because many solutions have been found.  I have heard many solutions such as underclocking memory, removing sound card, adding additional case fans, and many others.  Some think it is a heat issue but I'm not totally sure that it is.  Here's my PERSONAL situation:

It started occuring once and a while while playing World of Warcraft: the screen would go black, monitor would REMAIN on and computer would remain running, no sound, and the system will not respond.  The only way out of it is to reboot the computer manually*. I tired lowering the screen resolution, lowering the in-game video settings, updating video card drivers, and even ran system stress tests (which my system passed).  Recently I had been removing the side of the case and directing a house fan on the interior, with the assumption that it was a heat problem.  This did not seem to help at all.

I had been trying that for the past few days, and just yesterday things started to go really wrong.  First I noticed that the power LED and hard drive LED on the front of my case did not light up anymore.  This may or may not have anything to do with the problem, I don't know.  And now in addition, I began GETTING the black screen freezes even outside of playing WoW, even when just browsing the internet in windows.

*Additional Note: When I get the system freeze and have to manually restart, the system will not reboot properly unless I turn the computer completely off and wait for about 3 minutes or so.  If I try to reboot immediately, the computer will turn on, but the monitor will not recieve any signal.  Sometimes I will recieve a message during the boot "Overclocking Failed!" that will prompt me to enter the BIOS and "reconfigure."  It is interesting that I am not overclocking my system at all whatsoever.

All of this seems to scream out "HEAT ISSUE" to me, but I'm really not so sure, for the following reasons:

1) House fan did not help
2) I have felt the hardware components right after the crashes (risky, I know), and NOTHING is any more than warm.
3) Temperature monitors are giving perfectly normal temps

I really don't know what to do, I've tried so many different things.  Any help would be appreciated.

Solve : CD ROM / floppy drive probs:?

Answer»

Just  added Microsoft anti-spyware and ad-aware software to my PC, now the previously working CR ROM, CD R/W and floppy (all separate units) won't READ. They are STILL powered (you can hear the drives working), but no data being read (dialogue box saying unformatted disc loaded). Any ideas?Hello, how are you? Which Operating system you are USING and which drive you have?
Is the MESSAGE "unformatted disk loaded" also come from CD Drive or it is the case with floppy.
Secondly try it with different CD or floppy.
If you have still problems uninstall the software you have just installed i-e anti-spyware and then check it?

Take care of you and others and dont worry.

Solve : Cable disconnected / no signal?

Answer»

I took the motherboard out of my HP520C, and put it into a new tower, cuz the power supply was bad. Now when i boot computer up, i get a cable is disconnected, no input signal. Now i've checked my monitor and that works fine on my other computer. So, i know its not the monitor. I'm thinking that the video card bit the dust. I have onboard video on mobo. If it is the video card, once i install another video card, will i still have to disable the onboard video? Could my bad power supply have shorted out my onboard video? Also, on the old power supply, there was a power fan connector next to the ATX power plug. On my new power supply i dont have that 3 pin adapter. Could this be my problem?

I'm desperate please help. Why didnt you just replace the psu?The motherboard needs the correct psu to function properly. What type of board is it and what type of tower are you trying to put it into? Its an Asus A7V socket A motherboard. The case was overheating and i needed to transfer it out of there. Major cramped in there, no cooling possibilities. I'm putting it in an Antec case, with 350 watt power supply. I have to have a certain power supply , besides just an Atx ? Thats what the original power supply was an Atx, but its made by Hewlett Packard. By the way thanks for replying so quickly.  What makes you think the power supply was bad?
What makes you think the case was overheating?

The standard case is not that small.
on some older models the hardware had alot of proprietary stuff which made it hard to swap stuff, especially power supplies.all the new supplies are now made the same and have the correct voltages and grounds to the same pins so now they all conform.some older psu's would switch the 12v supplr to a different pin and if you put a new psu in and the 12volts went to the wrong pin> goodbye motherboard.Dell and HP were the worst offenders of this.Hello friend how are? Do another thing. Remove all of the RAM sticks from your board and clean any dust from both RAM and RAM slots on motherboard. Then agian put them in their respective slots.
Yes in ome cases, you have to disable onboard VGA if you have another card. If you have, then remove the card from PCI slot if you have PCI VGA card or whatever it is. Cleean both card and PCI OR AGP slot and then put it again.
Now urn your PC ON and I m sure you will get display.
Take care of yooou and others and be happy
Bye...
Dur-E-WahabYou know what? I think you have something there. I had removed my memory to transfer everything. However, heres the kicker, I put everything back into the HP case including the bad power supply. (I gave it a good cleaning.) Now i got it to boot once to the hard drive. So, then i put the dvd and cdrw in and now im back to no display again. I'm not getting a hd led LIGHT either. Their is only one way to put the power, led, switch in cuz it comes together. I know its something stupid but ive spent 6 hrs with this and im fed up.
To answer your question about a bad power supply, the fan is really rattling in there and its only a matter of time. Also looks are deceiving about the case. They didnt make it big ENOUGH inside for air to flow properly. The floppy has its own drive case, and they put an air intake over the back fan over the processor. Really crowded. Some guy WANTS to charge me $35.00 and said its really easy to fix. Someone must have some idea what im doing wrong. CMON, save me $35.00 lol

Solve : How do I combine my hard drives??

Answer»

I unstalled windows 2000 om my laptop. I partitioned another hard drive. Now I want to combine the two. Can you do that? You have to have the HDD with the operating system set as master and the other drive set as slave.I installed win xp, is what I meant to say. My laptop was running 98 and I wanted to upgrade it. I was not sure if it was going to WORK, but it did. Now I have one 2gb of win 98 and 2gb of win xp. Do I need to just erase everything and START over? Leave them separate.  Format the old Win98 partition and place all your data on it.  If you have to do a clean reinstall again, your data will not be lost.Hello, how are you? On the back of the hard disk, there are little jumpers.

HARD DISK THAT WILL CONTAIN WINDOWS
This hard disk must be set to master. How to do this? You can see the jumper sttings on the top of your hard disk jacket.

HARD DISK THAT WILL BE CONNECTED TO ABOVE ONE
This hard disk must be set to slave. How to do this?
You can see the jumper sttings on the top of your hard disk's jacket.

Now format the hard disk on which you will install the Windows. Be sure to transfer the important data to the other hard disk or drive. If you have no operting system install then you can do all this by booting your system from Windows98 BOOTABLE CD or Windows98 Bootable floppy.

After formating the hard disk, install the operating system and enjoy....

Solve : Changing Analog audio cassettes to Digital CDs.?

Hello Gurus.

I want to back up some analog cassettes onto DIGITAL CDs.

What are some options and types of equipment that I can add to my computer to make this a reality.

Thanking you in advance,

Lost DogFree software that will do it and a line in on your soundcard.Thank you for your prompt response.

Where can I get this FREE software?

Is there any special type of sound card I need to get to insure a high quality transfer with the option of mixing the left and right channels as needed.

Could this EVEN be boosted to 5.1 sound?

Your time and attention are greatly appreciated.

Lost DogHello how are you? For software you can  search it on "http://www.google.com/".
As for as matter of 5.1 sound is concerned, you need LATEST sound card like Creative Sound Blater of someone else. Bye...
Dur-E-Wahab.The only one I've used is Musicmatch Jukebox. I think  it is very easy to use and organizes your music for you, from cassette or cd. There was a free version, may still be, but the $20-30 pay version has more goodies that make it even easier.  I'm sure there are others, but I can't COMPLAIN about Musicmatch.

Solve : The ol' C drive?

Answer»

Hello, I am looking for info. on  why the C drive is always the default drive. And how to change it or change which drive is the default drive. I have 2 hd's in a RAID 0 config and they are partitioned into 3 drives.
[glb]Any [/glb]info. on the default drive topic is appreciated.Hello how are you? Normally, in the world drive C is considard as deafult drive. Actually it is preconfigured in the BIOS to first check the C: drive for Operating System after POST. If it finds any OS then it transfer the conrole to the OS. On the other hand, if it doen't find aany OS on C: then it will check other drives for OS.

You cannot change this option from BIOS(may be some BIOS also have this option). BIOS will always check C: drive.
When you are installing the operating sysem e.g windows, it ask you to select drive where you want to INSTALL the OS or windows. Defaul is C: but you can also chose different drive right there.

Is it enough info....
Take CARE of you and others and be happy...
Bye...
Dur-E-WahabThank you, that is what I thought might be the case. I am planning on adding another hard drive and then I will re-install windows and set it all up as I want it. I hope!! Quote

...why the C drive is always the default drive....

1st IBM PERSONAL Compuer (PC) had 1 floppy drive (A).
Later ones had 2 floppy drives (A & B).
With invention of hard disk drive, next in LINE was C.
When more drives and/or partitions were added, D thru Z.
"B" has just about disappeared, "A" soon to follow.

Solve : My computer won't boot. . . I think?

Answer»

I recently installed a new motherboard and processor, and my computer will power on(lights and everything), but not initialize video. The debug LED on my motherboard reads "boot". I have checked every plug, retried every connection, and RESET the CMOS. I have gone to various other places for help, but I cannot figure out what's wrong. My computer has no speaker for POST beeps.

I have recently switched to an older computer and now I'm starting to think that the monitor is really to blame. On some white images, I get a pink smearing effect, like a pink ghost or outline. Such as in a comic strip, the pure black on pure white text will have a pink ghost effect. This recently started happening, and I've had this monitor for 1 year with only one problem(it would always get narrow and pale, but now I've gotten used to it, it almost never fills the screen, and it's always a little pale.). It has also been giving me black distortion specks, for up to 40 minutes after I start it.

So, I am thinking: Maybe my newer computer, which I think isn't INITIALIZING video, really is, and the monitor is having problems.

Help? suggestions? I plan on borrowing a monitor from a friend and trying it on both COMPUTERS.Does your current monitor that you think has a problem able to work on another computer?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I was using the monitor a month ago, everything was fine. I installed the new parts, the computer didn't seem to work. I am using the same monitor now, but on an older computer. I am currently having issues with it, but continue to use it.and if you mean a 3rd computer, then no, I haven't tried a 3rd monitor. Sometime in the near future I plan on trying a different monitor on both computers as well as the current monitor on a different computer. In addition to those problems, the monitor occasionally switches on and off constantly(with the POING sound, as if someone were turning it on and off) but only during start up.If monitor is starting to go bad, it's hard to tell if computer is working or not.  That monitor noise is normal.   It should "click" once at the POST and maybe 1 or 2 other times during the boot.  The noise is video mode switching.  Age of monitor means little, anymore.  They can last a day, a week, a month, a year or 20 years.  I've got a 12-year old monitor...works perfectly.  I've got a 4-year old monitor...headed to the TRASH.  Brand new 17" MONITORS are less than $100.Well first: I don't exactly have $100 lying around

Second, this was a $250 19" flat-glass CRT, which I wouldn't exactly expect to be dead after 13 months.

And I don't mean it just makes noise during boot, it turns on and off, like every second until I get into windows.

Solve : sound trouble?

Answer»

i am having very bad sound problems. My speakers are fine, but i think my sound card is messed or somethuing. are there any viruses out there that interfere with the sound card? You shouldn't have to worry about viruses if you have antivirus protection... Also, try reinstalling your current sound DRIVERS, with new ones from the internet... (From the sound card manufacturer's website) Also, which version of Windows are you using?

[glb]Flame[/glb]i am using windows xp! Thanks alot! where can i find the manufactururs website?
Click on Start -> Run ... When the run box pops-up, type  dxdiag  ... Hit run... If a small window pops-up, click no... Now, you will see a large dialog box pop-up... Click on the sounds TAB, and look at the top-left of that window... You should see Manufacturer... Who is it?

[glb]Flame[/glb][glb]I think it says realtek if that is a manufacturer. Please post up again![/glb]HELLO how are you? Sound problems may also caused bcz of the PLAYER you are using for playing audio and video files. So try to install some other good Players like Windows Media Player, Jet Audio or Real Player.
If the problem persist then it is possible that it is because of your computer's sound card. Try to reinstall your sound drivers. But I think that it is better to install and up to date drivers for your sound card. If you have problem knowing which sound card do you have then dont worry Simply goto the following site and DOWNLOAD "Driver Genius Pro". By installing this software you can easily get detailed information about your Sound Card. It also includes other features. You can get info about this from the same link:
