Solve : RAM help desparately needed?

Answer»

Ok here's the problem. I have a 128MB and 256MB RAM installed. I have a PCI Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 256MB VIDEO card. Everything works fine k. Now, I tried to take out the 128MB RAM and put in a 512MB RAM. When I did this I got a blue screen telling me a problem was detected and windows will shut down ......  TECHNICAL INFORMATION :
STOP : 0X0000008E....
Beginning dump of physical MEMORY....
And that's all I get.
But when I put the 128MB RAM back in, it works just fine again.
PLEASE, if anyone knows how to help, I would greatly appreciate it.

MoPo You probably bought the wrong type (speed) of memory. No I've all ready checked, it's the right kind : pc2700If it works with the 128 and not the 512, does that tell you something? Quote

If it works with the 128 and not the 512, does that tell you something?

what?MoPo.....Have you read your MOBO MANUAL thoroughly..... Does the Dimm sockets support a 512 stick ? Buying Ram isnt like playing horseshoes .....close doesn't cut it ...it must be an exact match. ( there are a few exceptions)
What the max amount of ram your board will support?
Please give us the exact model number and maker of the MOBO .

Solve : Problem getting Slave hard drive to work?

Answer»

Computer = HP Pavilion 760n
OS = XP Home
1.8 ghz
512MB DDR SDRAM
120 gig Western D. Hard Drive with Embeded  recovery partition ( Main Drive )
120 gig Western D. Hard Drive ( Secondary Slave )

Any other info needed Just ask and I would be glad to give.
_______________________________________ ______

Now, I got a new computer for myself and gave this one above to my wife and daughter for gaming. All worked great on it at the time I gave it to them including the slave drive. I just WANTED to give it a CLEAN start so I PUT it back to factory specs by doing a system restore on the machine before I gave it to them.

Before doing so I totally took the slave drive out of the machine because My wife and I both keep info on the drive that we want to keep and I didnt want to take any chance of it getting messed up during this system restore. After I was done doing the system restore by using the embeded partition on the main hard drive that came with the computer and updating all drivers and hooked the secondary hard drive back up.

Now here is where my PROBLEM starts. The computer shows the drive is hooked up and even gives it the drive letter "F" just like it use to but when I go to explore the drive the computer tells me the drive isnt formatted and asks if I would like to do so now. Well I dont want to loose the info I have on that drive, that was the main reason for taking it out to begin with.

I have updated the drivers for the drive and it says they are up to date. When I check the properties to see what the difference between the main drive and the slave drive is and the only thing I can see that is different is on the main drive the file system says "NTFS" and the secondary drive says "RAW" I dont how this got changed when it wasnt hooked to the computer during the reformatting of the machine or even if its suppost to say that or not.

Is this the cause of my problem now? and if so how can I CHANGE that "RAW" back to the "NTFS" so the drive can be read again.

Thanks for all and any help anyone can give. I have been trying to figure this out on my own here for a week now and I can admit when something has got me beat.

Again Thanks for any help. This might work:  http://www.cgsecurity.org/index.html?testdisk.htmlhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/308424

Solve : Building a new system?

Answer»

I am trying (and have been trying for weeks now) to get my new system to work. I now have the following:

ASUS A7V880 Mother Board (BIOS updated to 1008)
AMD Athlon XP 3200 Processor
ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 graphics card
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card
Kingston 512MB DDR PC3200 RAM
Cool Max 400W Power Supply

Everything is up and running semi-stable now, but I'm having TWO big problems. One, my computer won't restart properly sometimes. Like after I install a windows update (for example) and it asks to reboot, i SAY OK, it shuts down, but then won't load BACK up (not even to the BIOS), the monitor led just blinks on and off. If I hit the reset button or power off completely a couple of times then it will eventually come back to life, but I'm not really sure why it is doing this. The second problem is with my video. Everything is fine until I install video drivers and then nothing works. It will load up to windows, but then go blank and just sit there. Any and all info is appreciated. Thanks. David K......Perhaps try removing and reseating your video card.
Do you hear any beeps when its booting up ?

let us know

dl65
The first problem that your PC do not restart properly, is caused due to any hardware confiction or software confliction. Try removing recently added hadware or software and then restart your PC again. If it works then fine otherwise this problem may also be caused bcz you update your BIOS and BIOS didn't updated correctly. So try to update it again, in case the first solution wont work.
Second problem is with your video. There are three possibilities. Either your VGA drivers, you try to install, not support your card or you didn't install correct drivers so get new and latest drivers. Secondly may be there is something wrong with your card. And last may be your moniter doesn't support high resolution so try it with different and better monitor.
But I think both problems are caused due to VGA or Video card. Try diiferent VGA or video card. It may POSSIBLE that your both problem are caused bcz of this Video card.
Hope this will solve your problem.
Take care of you and others and doont worry.
Bye...
Dur-E-WahabOk, thanks for the advice i'll try all the above. Hopefully not my video card... can't afford another one right now... but we'll seeIs this a new mobo??I'm not sure what a mobo is...Are you refering to motherboard as mobo (not familiar with that term)? If so, then yes it is new, just bought it a few days ago.

Solve : USB to Serial Converter?

Answer»

I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite A75-S231, and I am trying to connecti it to a data logger on a racecar.  The logger requires a serial connection, so I purchased a Belkin USB to Serial converter.  When I try to download data from the racecar to the laptop, the computer freezes completely, Ctrl-Alt-Delete does not work.   This set up works fine on my desktop computer, either connected directly to the serial port, or with the Belkin unit.  It also works with an ancient laptop, HELP!!!!!!!!!Do you need a SPECIFIC program to upload the data?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, and I have the program installed on the computer.  It is a Racepak technologies program, and I have spoken with both Racepak, and Toshiba without much success.Judging on how old this program sounds, I want to ask you this question... Have you checked to make sure that this program would be compatible with your new laptop? If it is an old program, you might need to buy the new version... OR get a patch from the internet... (The manufacturer of the software's website)

[glb]Flame[/glb]The program is a brand new one, with the newest version of software, the desktop computer that it runs on is also brand new, and the laptop is brand new, at first I thought the problem was RELATED to the laptop, and I exchanged it, but am having the same problem with this new laptop.  What about compatibiliity? Have you checked to make sure that everything looks like it is compatible? The other possibility is that the car is not compatible...

[glb]Flame[/glb]The manufacturer of the Racepak software says that they have had no problems interfacing with any computer that complies with their spec sheets, and this computer exceeds all of their requirements (the program runs properly on the old laptop which does NOT meet their requirements).  As far as the new computers, both operate on Windows XP home edition, service pack 2, so that should not be an issue.  I see... Very interesting... I'll be honest with you.... I don't really know what is wrong with it.... The only other theory that I have is that there is something up with the car... However, I would rather someone else on this forum such as dl65, or some other forum user to have a look at this, becuase I don't want to send you down the wrong path, that could dig you a deeper hole... Sorry I couldn't be of any more assistance to you!

[glb]Flame[/glb]The saga goes on.  After spending most of the day looking at the Toshiba, Belkin, and Microsoft websites, a random search turned up a couple instances where mention was made of the same Belkin USB to Serial Adaptor being incompatible with the Toshiba 5500 series computer.  I contacted the store where I bought the laptop and the adapter, and they ARRANGED for me to bring in the computer and try a port replicator and a serial device - it worked, and once I returned home, it also worked with the data logger and program for the racecar.  You would THINK that during my calls to Toshiba and Belkin this issue might have come up, but I guess tech support isn't what it used to be!WELL.... I'm glad to see that the issue was resolved anyway!

Solve : Hard disk space unalllocated?

Answer»

I have a Western Digital Caviar 120GB IDE 7200RPM - WD1200JB, which i have been using as a backup drive.  Basically all 120GB has been used.  I havent had the HDD in my comp for LAST few week (kept in HDD caddy), now last night when I put the HDD back in my comp it was not recognized in my computer. I checked under disk management and the drive now SAYS unallocated.
Tried in another comp same problem.

Any idea how how to fix this? cant see how 120gb DATA on a drive could just go unallocated.

ThanksIm having the same problem with the same HARD drive. I have yet to find a fix for this. If you do please make a post here about it so I can try to fix mine.

I cant believe this....its the same hard drive and everything. Now if you tell me you have a HP computer I might fall out of my chair.hello friend, how are you? Make sure that the hard disk is on "Master". Then GOTO BIOS setup and load the company's default settings. Then boot your PC.
                                OR
Try the same hard disk as "Slave" with some other one.

Hope this will solve your problem.

Solve : packard bell board?

Answer»

Hi there again, I'm back with a new question. I have an old packard bell 5615 with 233 Mhz. I hear I can hot rod it up a bit. How to set these jumpers to get it there. If that doesn't work will have to get a better board and cpu. Just thought I would try this first. I need to get it up around 300 Mhz or better to RUN some programs. thanksdepending what cpu it is,you should be able to go into the bios and change the clockspeed almost up another 100 mhz.let us know what cpu.will try that and also will look at the cpu and write down the info tonight when I get home. thanksThat's probably a Pentium II-233MHz, 66MHz FSB with 3.5 Multiplier.  PII's are multiplier locked and cannot be overclocked.  Since your FSB is 66 MHz and there was no 100MHz at the time, you're stuck with 66MHz.  Motherboard may be able to support 266 and 300MHz.  There's probably a jumper for this.  Memory is also an issue.  PC-66 memory is not PC-100 or PC-133 and cannot run at a higher speed.

I have a PII-266MHz Dell which WORKS the same way.ya just found out that I have a 790/795 mb and pretty much locked into 233 Mhz max. darnit anyway got another option though unless you got another suggestion for this mother board with 7 socket cpu? I found a website with great deals for computers. craigslist.org which is all over the country kinda like ebay listings. There is a Pentium 3 500 Mhz in here for 65 bucks. Just emailed them to see if I can get this. for this price why not. its the whole tower with everything plus a keyboard. You probably won't be able to use your old memory, unless it's PC100 or PC133.  PIII-500 is 100MHz bus speed with 5X multiplier.  PIII-500 is Slot 1 configuration.
PC100-133 memory is expensive because it's no longer manufactured but still available.  PC133-128MB is $50.

I just finished my upgrade.  Found a computer in the trash, PIII-667EB.  CPU was good, but mobo BIOS was trashed, unable to flash it.  Power supply was blown out, which probably killed the BIOS/CMOS.  Put CPU in place of my PIII-450.  My BIOS/mobo ALLOWS manual settings of multiplier and FSB.  Had to underclock because one memory stick is PC125 (that's right...PC125) and it's rated at PC100.  It's Micron and not some no-name brand.  Set multiplier to 5X and FSB to 112, so CPU runs at 560MHz.well here we go again but this time meaning I found a dell g1 with 350mhz for 50 bucks. Wow it works with my home studio and tascam interface. now just need to see how it works track on track. I got this through a website that is all over the place. you probably have heard of it and if you want super good deals I suggest you check it out. just go to the state your in or town and hit the computer section. the website is craigslist.org. amazing. as much stuff as ebay but this you don't have to pay for and people email you back selling stuff cheap. I should get some kinda of award for this tip. hahaha have FUN. tim

Solve : USB device I/O error?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with my JNC SSF-1002 MP3 player, when I try to access it by clicking on the icon in My Computer, it says the REQUEST can not be performed because of an I/O device ERROR.
Also, when I try to turn it on, the screen says:

I think wiping everything on the MP3 player would fix it, but I don't know how because I can't access it.

Solve : What video card do I need??

Answer»

I just purchased a LG L1720P monitor which has the option of  using analog or digital.  My pc however only allows for analog.  I would like to get a video card to convert to digital, but I am a novice in this area and have no idea what to look for.  All I am primarily using this setup for is to do digital photography editing work, it is not for gaming although will play occasional GAMES.  I would like to stay under $100 (the lower the better).  My pc is a Compaq Presario SR1330NX with a 3200+ Athlon.  Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

JasonHello Jason... It seems like NVIDIA might suit your needs well... You can get a decent video card these days for about $77 or under... Also, MOST video cards these days allow digital outout, so you should not have much trouble trying to find one... HOWEVER.... You will want to check with your computer manufacturer BEFORE making ANY upgrades, so that you can find out if your new HARDWARE will be compatible or not... Let us know what happens...

[glb]Flame[/glb]This will help you narrow your graphics card choices down.

The graphics for that computer are on-board. Because of that, Compaq did not equip the motherboard with an AGP slot (most graphics cards use this)

There ARE PCI slot graphics cards though. For good prices, if you trust internet shopping, go to Newegg.com.

A link to PCI graphics cards from Newegg is right here
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&catalog=48&propertycodevalue=0,%200,%200,%203344,%200,%200,%200,%200,%200,%200&minprice=&maxprice=&mfrcode=0&DEPA=1&page=1&listStyle=2

If you have any other questions at all, we will be glad to help you, just post it here. Or feel free to send me an e-mail.

Update us on how you're doing.

Good luck.Hey guys, I appreciate your help.  I talked to Compaq and they actually recommended an AGP card (can that even work with my motherboard?).  I was also wondering what SIZE you guys would recommend, 128mb, 256mb, or maybe even something else.  Here is an address of one I was looking at last night: http://hardware.gamespot.com/Story-ST-491-15-9-9-x
Would something like this card work?  Thank you very much for all  your help.

JasonHey Flame and Zero, I did some looking around and found a picture that labeled and showed what an AGP and a PCI port look like.  So I looked in my tower and I do in fact have an AGP port.  So I guess what I would need to know is what size mb to get and what capabilities (abreviations) I should look for in an AGP video card to make sure that it will go digital to my monitor.  Thanks!

JasonTell you what... go to the store.... Get a few video cards in mind, and give us the specs... We can then tell you what the smartest choice would be...

Awesome.... btw sorry bout the false info, I assumed incorrectly, and with all the microATX motherboards that I deal with, most of em don't have an AGP if they have on-board graphics.

But since yours does, all the better.

That PNY card may look good in those comparisons, but those cards aren't as cost/effective as some of the others that you can get for a deal.

Take Flame's advice, that is the best action right now.

Solve : ram order?

Answer»

with 3 slots on motherboard and 512 mb capacity, does it make any DIFFERENCE what size sticks are PUT in and in what order? ie: 1 512mb, 2 128mb and 1 256 or 2 256. and also is there any difference in what order they go in slots.rgray.....I would refer to your MOBO 's manual to be certain . Your board may not accept a 512 stick in one DIMM socket . I also BELIEVE that if you are going to use say 2 of the 3 dimms ...then I would use dimm 1 and dimm 2 and have dimm 3 enmpty , but again check your MOBO 's manual .

Hope this helps

Solve : laptop freeze up - CMOS??

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 3500 notebook with Windows 98 on it. It is 5 years old,  Lately it has been freezing up every time I log on - sometimes within 10 SECONDS of  typing but always within 10 minutes.  I can't out; everything is frozen.

I've run some Diagnostics, such as Dell Diagnostics and another utility, on it but nothing seems to turn up.   I hear that a CMOS battery dying could cause this problem, or just maybe overheating.  How can I determine this?

How can I find out what CMOS battery this machine uses?  I don't see any identification of it under hardware infromation or in the manual. I don't see it on used parts sites either.  Is this a battery you can buy from Radio Shack or some other retailer?

If the CMOS battery is the problem, where is it located?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

CMOS battery is not your problem.  Besides, it's not easily replaced even by a SKILLED technician.

Win98 will freeze up, when you sneeze (LOL).  It could be many things:  virus, spyware, something you recently installed.

If you have at lease 128MB MEMORY, upgrade to Win2k and you will be amazed at how fast it will go.  I've upgraded several 5 year old notebooks from Win98 to Win2k.

I only have 96 MB RAM.

I have unistalled almost everything from my computer - MS Office, Adobe, ETC.   I haven't installed anything new lately, no shareware or anything.  I have run repeated fixes on the registry, and have re-installed Windows 98 a few times.  I have entered in SafeMode, but I still have the same problem.   I have had Windows 98 problems before - shutdown problems, etc., but nothing that freezes the system regardless of what program you enter.

I don't think Dell Diagnostics has turned up anything.  Is there any other way to check the CMOS or other POTENTIAL problems? If the system clock still keeps relatively good time, with the laptop off and unplugged from AC, CMOS battery is okay.

please can somebody advise me. i have a intel 4 witch windows XP running i also have a old open 486 which  am not using for anything. i was wondering is it possiable to connect the 486 to the intel to use as a secound HARD drive for my dvd ectIf you're asking if you can take the hard drive out of the 486 and install it in your newer PC, the answer is probably yes.  You'd set the jumpers on the back of it to be a "slave" drive.  You'd have to be sure that there's room in your new PC for a second hard drive.

If you're asking if you can create a network between the two computers, the answer is maybe.  But if all you're looking for is more STORAGE space, it WOULD probably be easier to cannibalize your 486.  A hard drive on a 486 isn't more than 500MB (1/2 GB).  Just BUY a 2nd hard drive and give the 486 to someone.

Solve : USB 2 with PCMIA Card?

Answer»

Question on my laptop which has only USB 1, if I use a PCMIA USB 2 card with my external USB 2 hard drive what will my transfer speed REALLY be if I have a 133 buss speed?  Certainly slower that the 480Mbit USB 2 standard.  OK Wizards whats the MATH? HOW FastIs your PCMCIA 16-bit, 32-bit or 32-bit CardBus?  CardBus has Max bandwidth of 132 MB/sec.  8 bits in a byte, so multiply by 8.  132x8=1056.  Actual transfer speeds will be far less, just as USB 2.0 will never transfer your files at 480Mb/sec.

CardBus is a direct link to the PCIBus.  PC Card is the same as expansion card in your desktop, so 2.0 on destop and PC Card in laptop are the same.

From http://www.pcmcia.org/papers/new_bus.htm

PC Card-16 cards use an 8- or 16-bit INTERFACE that operates at ISA bus speeds (8 MHz) using an ISA-like asynchronous protocol. In contrast, CardBus provides a 32-bit multiplexed address/data path, which operates at PCI local-bus speeds of up to 33 MHz, yielding a peak bandwidth of 132MB/sec. CardBus ACCOMPLISHES this by adopting the synchronous burst-transfer orientation of PCI, as well as a bus protocol, which is essentially identical to that of PCI.

Solve : HP wont boot?

Answer»

It all STARTED for no apparent reason - the cd writer decided to stop working.   ???

So I did some ONLINE research and after trying a couple of things (reinstalling drivers and unistalling the drive via the device manager) I unistalled the SECONDARY IDE channel.

Now the computer will not come back up on its own.  I did boot it up with a floppy but now I can not figure out what to do.

Can anyone HELP? :-/
I just REMEMBERED as well I did move some driver files into a temporary folder .....
so if i could somehow acess the c drive i would be in good shape - i think ......  in msdos to enter "C:" is not working any other ways to get there?
If you booted it with a floppy, try using D as your original C, it's worked for me before... kinda how a 98 floppy with swap your cd-rom from D (default) to E......

Also, try to post us the EXACT error you are getting when booting up normally.i can not read the error - the screen flashes quickly  from the windows screen to the hp blue screen to the safe boot screen.\

Right now I am following some instructions on HP site to recover the system with an internal recovery program.

Solve : 2nd HDD DMA not recognized?

Answer»

I have added a 2nd HDD (Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 - 80GB)to a Dell 4550 2.53Ghz to use for video editing.  I have put it in the slave position with my original C: drive as master.  Dell recommended leave the SETTINGS as cable select so I did.  The new HDD remains in PIO mode and will not switch to DMA.  Because of this when I transfer video I drop every other frame.  The new HDD is UDMA-66 compatible.

Motherboard driver?  Switch to Master/Slave cofiguration?

Help please mmramrod.....So what configuration are you trying?
Both as cable select or ...........C as the master and D ( the new one ) as slave . Did you format the new one ?

let us know

dl65  Wow. Quick.  Thanks

I have both set to cable select with the old drive (C) at the end of the cable (master) and the new D: drive in the middle (slave) position.

The D is formatted and seems to work fine with everything except transferring video.

I am somewhat computer illiterate so please bear with meA quick update....  I set the jumpers on the new drive as slave and the old drive as master (not cable select) and it still did not work.

Then I took the cable from my CD/DVD drive and put each hard drive on it's own channel as masters (no CD/DVD at all)  Both HDDS worked perfectly (both showed up as UDMA in device MANAGER).

So my problem happens when I have both HDD's on the same cable.  This must be common problem?!?!

Thanks everyone for the help.

mmramrodI still need my CD/DVD drive back.

Anyone?

It's driving me nutsCable select only works with 80-conductor cable W/ 40-pin connector.  If only one device on any cable, sometimes cable select will work.  If 2 devices, use 40-conductor with master/slave and 80-conductor with cable select.  40-conductor cable only supports up to UDMA Mode 2 (UDMA-33).  80-conductor cable defaults to UDMA-33 if motherboard interface is only UDMA-33.

2 hard drives on one 80-conductor cable works just fine with cable select.

Use the cable that CAME with your new drive.  It's probably 80-conductor.

Read this:  http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confCable80-c.htmlThanks.  I'll try that

I believe I have 80 conductor cable now because it has the color codes and my computer manual (DELL) recomends using cable select.

We'll see

Looking under Device Manager there is an entry under Other Devices - Multimedia Audio Controller

Looking up the properties it has no name - no driver and no information of any sort

Solve : Problem accessing my D:?

Answer»

Hello everybody,

first of all, it's my first visit here and i must say it's a really nice forum.
Here is my problem:
I have a p4 2.8Ghz, asus p4p800-deluxe, 120gb sata 7200rpm maxtor, 1024 ddr 400 dual channel, nvidia fx5900 ultra 256 mb.  I partitioned my hard drive so the D: is for the games, music and videos.  But, it seems like it has problems accessing it.  When i double click on it, the hard drive makes noises and takes time before opening it.  Also, it is really slow when i play my games, before i had 30fps or more, now i have sometime 15.

I formatted and reinstalled everything, i INSTALLED a rack so it can take a mobile hard drive.  I checked for VIRUSES, spywares, etc.. there is nothing.

Anyone can help?

Solve : 2 computers, 1 modem?

Answer»

Hi there,

We have 2 computers in this house, 1 upstairs 1 downstairs. I've had broadband internet on the computer upstairs for about 4 months now on a 500mb plan but I've just upgraded to unlimited and now want to put internet on the computer downstairs.

I have a Thompson Speedtouch 530 ADSL modem and right now it connects via a USB cable. I want to KNOW how to run the computer downstaris off this modem aswell as the ONE upstairs at the same time.
The modem has a phone line input, a usb output and there's also a network socket there too but I'm not sure if its an input or output type.

I'm thinking I can just get a usb Y adaptor that splits from usb 2.0 into 2 usb 1.1 cables and run either cable to the computers.
What can I do?
ThanksYou will require either a Router or a Hub. I suggest you got for a Router. Once you have obtained a Router, DOCUMENTATION will explain you how to set up your network.I did some research on the matter and I've found it has a router built in, I think
http://shop.101internet.co.uk/thomson_speedtouch_530.htm

Some web sites are suggesting I install a network card in my computer then just run a network cable from the modem to my computer???USB can only be USED for 1 computer.  You must use ethernet (which you should be using for even 1 computer).  USB was never intended for use as an internet connection.  It is very inefficient.

The ethernet port on your modem must be connected to a separate router.  Calling your modem a router is incorrect.  It is an ADSL modem.  Look here:  http://www.dvdirect.com.au/catalogue/category1023/product3472
you  must have the filters>have a look at the bottom of this webpage wiring>http://www.adslguide.org.uk/guide/summary.asp  a cat5 cable...the best place in the uk is scan.co.ukOk LOOKS like I might need to invest in a Ethernet switch

There is 1 Ethernet port on the modem if I just run the telephone cable from the filter (which I have) to the Ethernet port on the modem then a Ethernet cable from the port to a Ethernet switch then run 2 more Ethernet cables to each computer's network card and I just get rid of the usb cable.

Does this sound right?

Solve : Putting AGP graphics cards in computers?

Answer»

I just ordered a slew of GEForce4 MX440 video cards for my Dell computers.  They are GX110 desktops w/256MB RAM using XP Pro.

The original GRAPHICS utility is integrated in the motherboard.  The new graphics cards use AGP....will these just go into my PCI slot?  Thanks for the help guys No.  AGP is not PCI.So am I not going to be able to put these video cards anywhere in these PC's?Not UNLESS you have an AGP slot.

I don't understand why you'd order such an expensive card for a computer that doesn't even have an AGP slot yet.... Quote

So am I not going to be able to put these video cards anywhere in these PC's?

No.  Did you open one up and look inside?  AGP slots are clearly visible.  Did you know that you can look up the specs on any Dell computer by entering the Service Tag Number on Dell's SUPPORT website?  You can also find it by model number.

Your GX110 has no AGP slot.  It has onboard video.

The cards were $30/ea....I don't define that as expensive.  The PC's have PCI's, and I have since had the shipper change my order to the SAME video cards, with a PCI Interface...thanks

These are used in a commercial environment, in an Internet Cafe, they are not for personal use.  All they need to do, is go online, and PLAY PC games with occasionally. Quote

Yes, I looked inside.  Sorry, I wasn't aware that an APG slotwas common knowledge.  I am no computer guru, I know basic operation functions, and how to diagnose some problems.  I am a business owner.  I am learning more about PC's by taking expanded classes at my local IT facility.  Just FYI, when I purchased the video cards, I forgot to see what interface they were, then AFTER they were shipped, I opened the PC's, and saw PCI boards, went back to the seller, and he said they were AGP's.....but all is fixed. STOP  The PCI cards may not work, either.  I have a Dell OptiPlex GXa, not the same, but similar.  The OptiPlex's were designed for corporations and businesses.  Many are SOLD at surplus.  Video, audio, ethernet are all on-board.  I am not sure if the onboard video can be turned off.  Windows supports dual monitors, but the 2nd monitor won't turn on until Windows boots.  Why not just use the onboard video?

Solve : . Hard Drive Gone?

Answer»

Hey, well basically my hard drive has DISAPPEARED. I tried to boot up my computer and then it said to insert boot disk. So what I did was put the WINDOWS XP Pro CD in, but then when I tried to format the Hard Drive, it said that no Hard Drive could be detected on my system. I tried going through BIOS and even that couldn't detect my HD. I HOPE someone could PLEASE lend me some advice on this topic, thank you!!See if all cables are still properly connected. Try switching IDE and power cables.I checked that, and yes the IDE cables are okay. I put in another HD of a friends and it responded, I am thinking the HD I have is just ruined, but I'm not sure. WOULD there be any possible way to put it in another computer as a slave or something and just clear it out, and then boot from XP cd? Thank youVisit hard drive manufacturer's website and download tools that run from a FD or CD.  The tools will tell you if the HD is bad.Hey, well I ended up just getting a new Hard Drive; mine was broken. Thank you for all the help and advice though, this site was great and I will definately come back again if and when I need some assistance.Just for our information, what brand of hard drive?   Was it still under warranty?I don't know if it was still under a warranty, because I purchased it from a friend. It was a Western Digital 30 gig HD though. There should be a date printed on the hard drive. Or a sticker that will tell you when the warranty will expire.

Assuming this is your only drive, have you set the jumper to SINGLE?

is there any way to fix it?Does the drive work when not playing games?  Is it all games or just CS that don't work?yes it does work when i am not playing games

and no, not just cs doom3 got the same error

When i enter the game sometimes i get to play for 2-10 minutes, and then i hear sound from my hd, and end of story, nothing help only restartIf it's still under warranty, back up any files you wish to keep and return it.Hmm that's very odd.  USUALLY a drive can't descriminate between applications, it either works or it doesn't.  Did you install any new hardware or were you fooling around with the drive at all recently?  How about the software (the games) are they new installs?CS games i had em from long ago, first time i got the erro about a month ago when i got doom3, i was playing it fine for couple days then i start getting the error. I earased EVERYTHING from HD (reinstalled) and itr didnt fix it, i still get the error, even now my hd is empty only couple games on it but nothing serios, i dont have any programs either[glb]If it's still under warranty, back up any files you wish to keep and return it. [/glb]

well i had warranty only for a month...i BOUGHT it from Fry's...i think that the Western digital warranty is for a year, but do U think if i try to do something with wd i get a new hd?someone told me that its Bad Sector or something, i dont know anything about comps, whats a Bad Sector? is it pissible to fix? That may indicate your Hard Disk Drive is failing. Or not.

Read this article:

I'm getting Bad Sectors, Clusters, and/or Missing Allocations what should I do?

If you reformat the Hard Disk Drive and see if you run into any errors described there's a chance that your Hard Disk Drive is failing.i am a nub in comps, how do i format or scandisk my hd?  i mean reformat or format  What the terms mean:

Format

Reformat

Depending on what Operating System you are using, there are different ways to format your Hard Disk Drive.

However, it is adviceable that you download and/or use Western Digital testing software.

Obtain the software here:

Seagate Technology SeaTools

Be aware that formatting will erase EVERYTHING on that disk!  I recommend making a backup if you can before you format.I forgot to add that you donot require to format your Hard Disk Drive in order to use the Western Digital testing software.Western Digital testing software?

do u know where i can find it? I searched whole google but didnt find anything that would work...

hi i bought a NEW 512mb pc2700 DDR but wen i INSERT it in the slot when i try to turn on the computer it will not work and it will have a beep code with  3 long beeps and i dont know wats d prob.... i've tried sum tips like the video card and stuf but stil it does not wok i have an ami bios but i dont know wat model... pls help... tnx in advance who ever helps me.... : SMaybe you have reached the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed. Maybe you bought the wrong type of RAM.

Additional information on computer POST / Beep Codes. Beep explanation

I don't know why you're looking at the videocard if the problem started when you inserted RAM...how can i check if ive reached the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed. i bought a ddr ram and i have a ddr slot in my motherboard...Refer to your manual....

Did you take the proper precautions when handling the RAM?Anthony Getuaban...well ram sometimes can be a problem......Your motherboard is the determining factor as to what kind and how much Ram you can install...So if you COULD let us know what the make and model of motherboard . Something else that would be helpful would be to tell us exactly what type of ram that was installed and working......just saying for example 512 ddr isnt good enough .....the speed is required as well .
please let us know and I'm sure some one here will solve your problem ASAP.

dl65 i really dont know wats the model of my motherboard... but the brrand is AMI... b4 i was using an sd ram den den i bought a new one and replaced the sdram to ddr... coz i have two dimm slots and 2 ddr slots... b4 d sdram was on the dimm slot now i removed the sdram and placed the drr to the ddr slot 1... hope this info might help....4 raptors question.. yes i did i know that the ram static sensitive...
You will really have to obtain specifications of your motherboard before you can continue.

Look for a name/number printed on the circuit board and Google for it.i tried to open my pc and i dont know wats d name of this part in the mother board it shape like a square and labeled pc400....You will have to look for a name on the motherboard. It is most likely printed near the PCI slots.i havent seen the name labeled near d pci slot... i saw a black square labeled
      ITE
  IT8705f

and far to d right is

    VIA
 VT8233

im really sorry i dont know much on this technical stuf....I know my motherboard is AMI because i saw an ami logo wen i start my computer.... can i also view wats the model of this motherboard there???

Solve : Network Adptor/ Static Electricity?

Answer»

Good morning I have a computer that will not connect to the internet through cable any more.  I was able to identify the problem as a static interferience in the network adptor and not a virous. So I released the static and was able to get on line. I checked for virouses just incase. and I sent it back to the customer. they plug it in and they cant get on line.  How are they re charging the computer or is it somthing I'm missing completely?

Baffledwhat network card
The operating system is xp and the computer is a dell 2002 desktop the network card is an internal RJ45 with two USB ports.  The internet conection is a high speed cable  set up through an external modem.  The modem seems to be working fine and I have reset all the IP config's I also had the service provider ping the computer.  The owner does do a lot of knitting could this do it? I know it sounds strange? Quote

1.  How were you able to identify "static interferience in the network adptor"?

2.  How were you able to "released the static"?

3.  What is "re charging the computer"?
get the owner to TRY all ports on this hub and check the cat5 cables are not kinked or damaged...and can you ask if i could have  a jumper knitted its getting a bit nippy in london..I'm sorry I'm not sure I know what you mean by the nic? I was able to identify the problem by running a system check with the CD from the cable service providor and it identified the network adaptor as having static electricity.  I then opened up the computer and released it with a grounding device, you know the one with the alagator clip that you plug into the wall, and it worked just fine.  As I recall her cable was just fine no cuts nicks or strange abarsions.  I am going there in an hour to try again any last words of advice.  Oh I will ask about the jumpor it's cold here in virginia too.

thanks, AleciaNIC = Network Interface Card
This is new to me...never heard of a NIC with static electricity build-up (while it's on and plugged in).  Time to do some research.remove all refererences from  network interface card from the device manager save password username and re-boot ...load any software first then install hardware...and reconfig internet CONNECTIONS...and make short that any firewalls and configured to...and when connected watchout for the m$blaster/welcha/netsky worms...and  a final check is MSCONFIG enable all msoft services..are you getting any error messages 404 etc..Thanks I will give it a go.  what is your best bet for detecting and removing the worms you have mentioned I have been using AVG, a2, and trojanhunter? AVG is good.  Also Ad Aware for spyware REMOVAL.

Solve : HELP! Non working USB no legacy ports! Bootup erro?

Answer»
Hello Hope anyone can help I might be SOL on this one. tried to install a USB card on a friends Gateway Essential 300SE machine (it is a legacy free XP machine with 5 usb ports for usb mouse and keyboard, small chassis) Well everytime I unplugged to look it and try somethign it would have to redetect the keyboard. I took it methodically I never did get the USB card installed in it (Low-pro 2 PORT USB adapter). The DAUGHTER broke a port in back cause the rear 3 to die. Only the 2 in front worked for me at first. Well As I attempted to add the card and boot it up It had to redetec the keybaord and mouse and it just sat at a screen for me to press a button but would not go on. so i rebooted a few more times still stalled at the same spot so I unplug everything and try again. Instead on no keyboard PRESENT I get a CMOS Wrong erro press F1 for setup or f9 to continue. Well without a keyboard youc an't do that. So.... It is all I can do! It will SHUT off and restart and go that far. It can't boot to a floppy or the XP boot cd nothing. I replaced the battery with a new battery as advised. No change. also no jumper near the battery or BIOS or any place in the limited documentation to reset it. Id love to enable the USB so I could try again and not ruin the machine. What can I do?? Anybody know the way to default or resett he cmos in this machine or a way to get in> can I get a PS/2 card for the keyboard/mouse will Xp recognize it? please help thanmks Quote

Keyboard in one of the 2 front ports might work.  Unable to find any info on Gateway website on Gateway Essential 300SE.

Solve : Memory Upgrade Query?

Answer»

Hi
I have a Laptop which seems to be taking longer and longer to do anything it is:-
1 Gigapro CPU running Win ME it has presently got 128 SDRAM.  My QUESTION is this.  If I upgrade to 512 SDRAM (Which the laptop can take) will I notice much improvement in speed say in booting and programme startups?  Laptop is presently being used by my daughter mostly for homework and is networked to the internet via broadband. When is the last time you defragmented your Hard Disk Drive?

If you notice that performance is going down, adding more RAM won't work. You will have to better maintain your files instead. Thanks Raptor,
I will go and try to defrag right now... mind you I seem to remember having real PROBLEMS doing it last time.  I think I had to Control-Alt-Delete and shut down nearly everything that was running to get it to work.  Does this seem normal?I suggest you do these things on a regular basis to keep your COMPUTER well maintained and running smooth:

  • Scan for viruses/Trojans
  • Scan for spyware
  • Defragment Hard Disk Drives/Partitions
  • Clean registry
  • Remove redundant files
  • Run whatever maintenance wizards that COME with Windows ME (If any at all)

A program such as

Advanced System Optimizer V2 can be used to do keep your computer well maintained. It even allows you to enable additional security. Try the 30 day trial. If your still out there Raptor I don't seem to be able to run Defrag on the Laptop.  It told me there was problems with the disc and to run scandisc.  I have been running scan disc now for some time and it just keeps going back to the start . (I have clicked for it to automatically correct any errors)  Any ideas as to how I get DefraG to run?

Thanks in advanceWhat if you use Scandisk in safe mode?Okay I will go give that a try

Thanks Quote

WinME is notoriously slow.  Upgrading MEMORY will nothing for you unless you also upgrade to WinXP.

Solve : Hard Drive got a virus???

Answer»

I just got road runner and it was running great until the next day I turn it on and it said something about LAN but wouldn't boot up. Its a HP so I have recovery disk. It said Hard Drive was not found that I might need to run FDISK. I put in my start up floppy and it said that I need to run FDISK or that a virus maybe causing it to not register. I think thats what happened cause I ran SCANDISK in dos and it said drive c: had no errors so its detecting it. When I try to run FDISK it says no fixed disk are present. Can anyone help me fix this?? Its a HP Pavilion with 98.Has 98 eh? When your computer is STARTING up..... tell us what says after "Fixed Disk".......... if it says something, it's a good sign....

When you start your computer.... hold down Ctrl..... Boot in safe mode........Have you checked to see if the HDD is detected in the BIOS?I put it in another HP Pavilion I have and it started up. I ran fdisk and am reformatting it. I GUESS it wasn't set up properly in the bios. How do I fix that? The easiest way would be to set it the Hard Disk Drive to 'Auto' in the Basic BIOS menu or ALLOW the BIOS to detect it.

If that does not work, you should EITHER refer to the manual of the HDD or contact the MANUFACTURERS technical support.

Solve : ISP Error?

Answer»

When I'm CONNECTED to the Internet, my ISP frequently disconnects me and I have to dial again. This happens when I check my e-mail or when I'm just SURFING. I don't know if it helps but I can't keep my connection when my computer sleeps either.Gregory Lehr-Milberg.....If you are getting a ISP error exactly what is it ...or are you just calling it an error ?
If your connection is lost after checking your E mail....its possible you have the Box ticked that says close connection after receipt of Email ( or something like that ) You say you lose connection while surfin .......is this time related or just a RANDOM thing ?
You also mention that you loose connection when your pc is sleeping......It's possible that if your ISP sees inactivity it will disconnect you. I would check all your settings , your modem and if necessary run your issue past your ISP.
The other thing is if you let us in on what your o/s is and the type of modem you have ..it may be easier to assist you.

Hope this helps you .

dl65 What is your connection to the net...56k/adsl /cable/sat most isp disconnect after TWO hours..which can be alterted? Thanks, but I fixed it already! (^_^)GOOD--------------replies-------are good but what did you do to slove you problem...it may seem trival but it go to help someone in the midst of time .....post your soulution...unless it was self inflicted....>>>>>^^^
