Solve : Running Programs on Another Hard Drive?

Answer»

I recently purchased a 160 GB drive w/ an external case and installed it.  I was wondering if how I can move program files (namely games) from my old drive and still have them show up on My Programs and have them work when I enter the CD.  Is there any way?  Thanks. It is BEST to uninstall them and re-install selecting the new drive as the location to install them at the setup prompt - This will set them up properly and will show them in My programs.

If you just move them to the new drive this can OFTEN cause a lot of problems with DIRECTORY paths and the REGISTRY.

It is not adviseable to install programs on an external hard drive.  They may fail to OPERATE properly and could be a lot slower than you desire.

Solve : Mysterious sound problem.?

Answer»

hey guys, im kat, and im 16...not that that matters.....

i recently restarted my computer from scratch, because i had all these VIRUSES and unwanted advertisements hidden somewhere in my hard drive, and have had to re install word and all the other stuff that you would usually use.

the thing is, everything works fine, except my sound.

i have windows xp for those who want to know.

i tried playing a cd and some other music i have downloaded in media player, only to have an error message come up and say "cannot PLAY back the audio stream: no audio hardware available, or the hardware is not responding."

so, i thought yeah ok, fine, so i searched my computer and yes i have a sound card, yes my speakers are plugged in in the right places and yes the speakers are turned on, and i havent found anything on my computer yet to help me, because i cant find the stuff that tells me what model my "devices" are and stuff.

i have however found that by going into control panel, then to printers and other harware, and then going to ad hardware that three of my "other devices"  (ethernet control, sm bus controller, and multimedia audio controller) have yellow question marks next to them.... i undertsand that this is a bad thing? anyway, i tried fixing it but do not know where or what the installation cds may be and what they may be called.... i thought this may be a contributing factor to why my sound isnt working.

i searched the internet too, and found nothing that may help me, THOUGH someone out there must knwo something about my problem!!!!

please get back to me soon!

thank you!

[glb]kat[/glb]kat......If you click on control panel.....then click on "system".....the system properties window will open ....now click on the "hardware tab" and then click device manager.......you will see all the devices installed shown there. For details click on the + sign and then check each one out .....If you have an exclamation point there.....probably there is no driver installed . Windows Xp has a wide assortment of device drivers ......You say you restarted your computer from scratch...does that mean that you FORMATTED the hard drive and did a cvlean install of Win XP.......if so did you go to
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us
and D/L any updates available. If you havent ,there will be a few there and probably drivers as well. If you wish to D/l SP2 you will have to d/l some updates before you may D/l SP2...When you first started your pc after the format ....didnt you see the message come up that Windows had detected new hardware installed and then it would have installed a driver for it or would have asked you to install the necessary drivers ?
let us know and then we can go on .

I suggest you install the programs recommended in order to prevent the 'Unwanted advertisements' and viruses from doing harm again.

Solve : CAN I UPGRADE LAPTOP WITH GRAPHICS CARD????????????

Answer»

hey thanks for COMING in

i got a new toshiba laptop and i dont have a good GRAPHICS card cause i forgot to have them put one in when i bought it. now i cant run video games like city of heroes and and other good games that i have been wanting to play. also when i play games such as halo my characters are gray and very choppy. i dont want this to ruin my gaming experience and i thought u guys could help

thanks yo
jo hoan! You would been cheaper off buying a Desktop, which are somewhat meant to play games more than a Laptop is...

Why not return the Laptop and ask them if they can INSTALL a videocard for you?Raptor's right: if you want games performance, get a desktop.

Laptops, funnily enough, were designed to be portable and as such, manufacturers try to make things as light as possible. This usually means that pretty much everything was soldered directly on to the motherboard. They never thought that it was a problem because hey, the only folk buying laptops were businessmen using MS Office and very little else.

They also tend to have very underpowered parts in order to try and conserve a little bit of battery LIFE. If you are really wanting to get a little extra speed, you could try a bit of overclocking. This invloves INCREASING the voltage in the CPU *SLIGHTLY* in order to get a few extra Hz out of it.

Of course, higher voltage, more battery drainage and so more time spent with the thing plugged into a mains socket. Which, in my mind, kinda defeats the point of having a laptop in the first place... Quote

(1) Video cards have been separate plug-in cards for at least 5 years.

(2) Not any more.  Laptops are becoming more "mainstream" and are used as desktop replacements.  With 7200rpm drives, performance is virtually equivalent.

(3) Not an option on a laptop.

Solve : Microphone/Speakers Issues?

Answer»

Quick question:  I have a desktop microphone that plugs into my sound CARD.  My speakers plug in.  I had to change some settings to try to get a program (teamspeak) working.

I THINK I accidently made it so my input from the microphone is played out through my speakers in REAL time (kinda like a regular singing microphone).

I WOULD like my microphone input to go just to the programs (teamspeak voice chat) I NEED it to and not come out again through my speakers (sometimes it causes feedback).

Anyone have any ideas on what settings might be able to disable this?Does this also happen in the Windows sound recorder?

Solve : troubles printing?

Answer»

I am having trouble printing color copies.  The color that prints is not the same color as I choose on the computer.  I can not figure out how to fix this problem.  Can some one help me please.  I'm GUESSING that you're describing shades of color here.  For example, on the SCREEN you see a nice blue-green, but on paper it comes out too green, or too blue.  If that's the case, realize that ink and light work very differently.  The brightness of the paper you're printing on will have an effect.  Your monitor is probably not calibrated to look like the printed page.  And the quality of the printer itself will MAKE a difference.   (Econo-printing doesn't give faithful results.)

Do a GOOGLE search on monitor calibration for tips on how to do modify your monitor settings to more CLOSELY match the output.
You may need to readjust your monitor colours.

Solve : Computer slows down when...?

Answer»

When my dsl is not working (a rare occasion) my computer slows down drastically: loading programs and navigating around is very slow. When it starts to work again everything is OK and it’s back to its speedy self. Why should this happen? I am running XP Professional on an IBM clone. Have good ram, lots of hard drive and lots of speed.

I would think the computer is a stand alone item and should not be effected by this; what will happen if in the future I decide to drop dsl – will I be stuck with a slow computer. (By the way, before installing the dsl, I had no problems with it.)
Many thanks for any help in advance.Scan for viruses, SPYWARE and trojans. Thanks, but that's not it. I do scan every few days and if that were the case I would think it would effect the machine connected to the DSL or not. What do you have loading at startup? Programs that update automatically might be looking for the connection and having to wait for the time out. Some will make several attempts.do you mean it  slows down when you are on the net....or just you are booting up...more info if possible..To DUMMY: You may be CORRECT. Another suggested that my VPN may be trying to load and THUS the problem. I will disable that next time and see if there is a difference, thanks.

To Merlin: No, it does not slow upon booting. It is slow when it is booted up and (SINCE the DSL is out) I am not on the net. It is simply slow when on. In fact, it boots normaly. Solve : ATI problem with s-video, composite?

Answer»

;)I have Intel Pentium 4 CPU with 128 RAM, Windows XP installed. I have one problem with my Graphic Card ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. I cannot use S-video and composite function when I connect camcorder or any player to view on monitor. I see black picture with audio only. When I use analogue connection it works properly and the picture is alright. It was working properly when I was using Windows Me. I tried to install all new drivers but without any solution. So please give your expert opinion on this to solve the problem. Thanks.are you settings configured to PAL ?Ya, I tried all setting including pal but of no use.buy video-bus from belkin....should come with video ware software for pal etc...have you tried movie maker? what software causes this problem besides winxp hate to refer to that no option alas >wmp9Perhaps your very low amount of RAM is the problem. The picture didn't come even after using windows movie maker. Actually when I formated my computer from windows me to xp this problem occured. May be the cable which i use to connect is damaged? It is more likely a RAM problem, especially after you told us that it functioned properly on ME

XP requires more RAM to function than ME and thus, leaves less room for other tasks.

How RAM Works

Random Access Memory - RAMThanks for your suggestions. I will try to increase my RAM and LET you know.  RECENTLY one of my friends also faced this problem. The only thing he did is that he took out the card from his computer and tried in other one. When he again installed in his computer he faced problem like me. REGARDING RAM I read in ATI guide that 128 RAM is sufficient for running this program.Sufficient to run the program, perhaps, but that is not all the RAM has to handle. Windows XP also requires RAM. And so do the other programs installed. As suggested by you I upgraded my CPU to Intel Pentium 4 (865), 3.2 Ghz & 512 DDR RAM. But it didn't solve the problem. I think The card is not supported by Windows XP.I have owned an ATI/Radeon 9000Pro and it worked fine on Windows XP. However, I did not use the functions you used. Have you looked into downloading the latest drivers and perhaps contacting ATI technical support? You may experience inconsistent graphic performance with textures if you set the Mipmap Detail Level in the ATI Direct3D Control Panel to any setting except High Quality copyright microsoft 2004i updated the drivers. i will CHECK the settings. thanxThe Mipmap Detail Level in ATI Direct 3D control panel is set to High Quality.

Solve : some help for a novice!?

Answer» HI everyone,
I recently aquired a 20gb w/d protege disk with which I'd like to replace my current ageing 8.4 drive. After some initial faffing about I've got to the point where I'm prompted to install the operating system, only to be GREETED by a windows error box stating insufficient disk space!
I've reinstalled windows on my current drive before without trouble but I've always been reluctant to fish around in the bios, could this be where the trouble lies and what should I do? Is there a standard procedure to go through when exchanging hard disks?

many thanks for your valued suggestions.matty.....So you now have two hard drives on your p/c
One is the master and the other one is the slave.......When you look in your bios ..is that the way it's seen ?  It almost sounds like Windows is trying to install on your older HD and there isn't sudfficient room for it hence the error message. You haven't mentioned what operating system you are trying to install. Have you formatted the second drive and if so as what ......FAT , FAT32 , NTFS or what .

let us KNOW
dl65
Hi dl65
Thanks for the reply,
I'm trying to do a straight swap, pc is bursting at the seams for two drives. I' m trying to install 98se with fat 32!!!!
as I say, being a novice I've limited knowledge but the pc is second user, roughly five years old, msi ms5191 MAINBOARD and in mainly stock config.. with a printer and scanner. the drive was formatted before I received it, however it does not go through the same process
as in the past when I've formatted/reinstalled the original drive. I know the 20gb drive had partitions on it! make any difference?
when I prompt to format drive c: it's done in a second! does that sound right?

again, appreciate your time, thanks.matty....Ok .....so you have removed the old 8+gb drive and have installed the 20gb drive......The 20 gb drive should take more than a second to format......It should take minutes .........Have you tried booting up with your win98 boot disk and RUN the FDISK function to see what if any the partitions are and then remove all partitions and format the entiire drive and then install win98 SE.

let us know how you make out

dl65  I'll have to wait untill the weekend to carry out your instructions but I'll certainly let you know how I get on.
Just wanted to say thanks for taking time out to reply and help out, really good of you.

respect.Along with your help I now have a new, huge!! hard drive capacity, and so much more quiet too, probably saved me a packet to boot.
So very many thanks for your help dl65, top man.

That's a multisync monitor capable of 1280x1024 60Hz and 1024x768 75Hz.   If you are unable to resize the image with the monitor controls located on the monitor, then the problem is with the monitor and cannot be repaired for a reasonable price.  Cheaper to buy a new monitor than to repair one.

But the fans are all working..Reset your BIOS by taking out the CMOS battery for 10 seconds and check if all the cables are connected properly. What hard drive have you got?I also have that same problem, I changed processors since my amd socket A 850 athlon was running hot. Did you follow the instructions when adding the thermal paste?Yup I did. Also checked that the mobo would support that cpu. its a 1.3 duron, not a 1.7, i checked the numbers. I also pulled the cables on my hdd and cd's. no go. Pulled and reset all my cards, pulled my memory one at a time to see if it was a slot or memory stick, no go. I suspect my power SUPPLY, it is a 400 watt but its a cheapie and a couple years old. My experience reboots are most likely caused by heat problems or powersources. Any suggestions are welcome and if I get it fixed I'll post what I did.You did install a CPU fan, yes?

If you think your PSU may be failing, you should replace it.What operating system have you got?

Solve : How to go from ancient laptop to new usb printer??

Answer»

Hi-
I'm feeling very happy that I just found this forum!

I have been trying to figure out how to attach my new printer to my old laptop- and can't.

The old laptop is from 96, and doesn't have a usb port. It is a parrellel port. The new printer is usb.

I assumed I could find a parrellel port to usb printer converter cable and cannot. I have ordered several of these, after talking on the phone with online cable stores- and received incorrect cables.

I would really love it anyone had any ideas.
Thanks!
TrishYou could always go to the closest Radioshack and look, they have hundred's if not thousands of adapters, cords, and everything else you could think of in the back of the store usually hanging on the shelvesand after looking for about 37 seconds i found this for you...a a parrallel-usb cableand after looking for about 37 seconds i found this for you...a a parrallel-usb cable http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=26-184Hi Sean  ,

I know I had found that thousands of times too- but it's not the right one.

What you found is:
"USB-to-Parallel Port Printer Cable" (meaning female usb to parrellel port printer. )

it's the wrong usb "end".  My new printer has the male usb port.
Believe me I have tried- even called around and still no answers. Perhaps there is another way? Seriel port to USB, or ps2 to usb?

I would love any other ideas though- there has to be a way to CONNECT an ancient laptop to a new printer?
Thanks!
Trish

Trish, you need something like this.Great! I just checked it out and I think you are right! I never thought of that. I wasn't sure if the laptop was too old or not for a card?

My only problem may be that I believe the laptop is Win 95, Pen I. Stats for this card state Win 98- I'll check it out when I get to work today. We are using this old laptop at my store just for customers to USE to JOURNAL with. We are a scrapbook store- and do use a few new networked computers for our sales & accounting. My younger sister just gave me this old laptop, so I'm still unfamiliar with some aspects of it.

Thanks so much 2k dummy- I appreciate it!!!
Trish Quote

Trish, you need something like this.

Unfortunately, that is a CardBus and will probably not work with a 1996 laptop.

http://www.d-link.com/products/?pid=151Hi Computer_Commando,

Darn, I just checked the computer today- and it was Win 98. hmmm? I wonder if there is another way? Any ideas? Maybe that is sign that I should just either hook up an ancient printer to it- or upgrade to a new or slightly used laptop/computer?

Any tips where I could buy a slightly used computer that would be do-able?
Thanks!
TrishDon't be fooled by the terminology. These things fit in a standard type II pcmcia slot. Windows 98 comes with the card services and work fine with them. The card MIGHT come with its own driver software but is no different than a wireless network adapter or external pcmcia modem. My IBM laptop is much older and works a treat with my wireless network adapter. Cardbus and pcmcia are the some thing - just some cards are proprietary - as I suspect they all are.Hi 2k dummy,
Thank you! I am learning more and more about computers every day with my research on how to solve this problem. I appreciate your help. I will definately try it- glad to hear some great advice from great tech guys!!!

Thanks!
Trish Quote

Absolutely untrue!  You have no clue what you're talking about.  The PCMCIA standards are backwards compatible, not forwards compatible.  A CardBus PCMCIA device will physically fit, but it will not operate in a 16-bit or 32-bit PCMCIA.  However, a 16-bit or 32-bit PCMCIA device will fit and operate in a CardBus slot.

Hi Computer_Commando,

Oh, I'm sooo bummed!   I really don't want to buy another computer for our JOURNALING center for our scrapbook girls. I was just hoping I could recycle this one- the girls will only need to use Word on it.
I have a super computer tech friend, and called him- but he is hard to get a hold of...and I haven't heard back. I was really hoping that researching this problem would be an education of sorts into this matter further.
Computer_Commando, do you have any ideas? Is this idea hopeless?

Hi Computer_Commando,

Sorry.  Didn't want you to purchase something that won't work.  I've had lots of experience with older laptops.  What is the make and model number of your laptop?

Anyway...how 'bout this...if you can't adapt the computer to the printer...adapt the printer to the computer.  You can purchase a brand new laser printer for $100.  http://www.pricegrabber.com/Hi Computer_Commando,

Thanks for your help. My old laptop is on my desk at my store- so I don't have that info here. My younger sister just gave it to me- as she was getting rid of it. I will check it out when I get to work tomorrow and hop on this board then with details.

I have a super laser at home- yet it isn't portable. It's a Minolta QMS 330- arrived on a skid a few years ago.

My ink jet at the shop is a dell- that came free with my mother's computer from Dell. I would bet it's a Lexmark- surplus. However- if I can find a cheap Epson ink jet- there's a guy at a local market that is selling refills for it for $2. I know sounds crazy- but he must refill them and resell them? Otherwise ink jet cart. costs about $30 for each. Our QMS toner refills cost about $150 a color- it's really insane.

So, getting to my point- I was hoping to be able to hook up this laptop to the free ink jet that my mom gave me. In the meantime- looking for a cheap epson ink jet printer so that I can use refills from this guy. LOL! I know it all sounds crazy.

I have a scrapbook store and want to offer a computer jounaling center for them to use during classes and crops- but because I don't charge much for either- was hoping the the computer center wouldn't set me back much either.

Thanks, I'll post back tomorrow.

I am trying to run a DOS application on a new Presario hardware platform without much success.  I have tried to run it as a DOS session in XP and also a pure DOS session under DOS 6.22.  The program displays the same problems in both SITUATIONS.

The main problem appears to be that data gets written to the wrong FILES or gets written as a blank.

Any ideas???  Probably best, though not easiest way, is to create a small separate partition on the drive and install MSDOS there. You can do this using something like Partition Magic. The main problem I can foresee is that the DOS partition would need to be the primary so I'm not too sure how this would be HANDLED by PM.  I'm sure there must be some sites around with help on this SUBJECT - MSDOS users are a tough bunch Thanks Tallyman,

I've tried that, but to no avail.  I am wondering if there is a compatibility problem with running DOS applications on new hardware.

No.

Solve : new ram added computer freezes on internet?

Answer»

I went to a local computer shop to have memory increased (was 64 added 256). Now it freezes on the internet. Store says the ram was tested and fine, did a hardware diagnosis everything is fine. Running just 256 it freezes but not with 64. Is there any setting on the computer that may need to be adjusted???If you still have warranty on your new RAM, go back to the store and explain them your problem? When buying a RAM not only the CAPACITY but also the type and the speed matters. Two types of memory is mostly used: SDRAM AND DDR-DRAM.The speed varies from PC66 to PC450 and beyond. The speed should agree with the FSB. Check your manual to see that the new memory satisfy the specification in the sytem's manual.

Solve : monitor problems (off mode?)?

Answer»

the first problem is youngsters. somehow they have got the monitor in off mode. the monitor source said  that to reset it do this, with the power on unplug the monitor from the tower then plug it back in. I tried that with no success. the computer boots and the screen stays black,
no text or anything while it boots. I have tried to reboot so many times it will not boot fully, hangs up before it FINISHES. When I SELECT the menu button on the monitor it displays text that says off mode. one time while i was frustrated i did get the menu to come on but did not see any setting the would reverse off mode. Why would anyone want a feature like that on a computer? is there anyone that could help me out here. i have an IBM compatible running windows xp. is there a way to get the dos promt and go back to a earlier set point? if so how do I do this?
thanks in advance,

With 'Off-mode' you mean Stand-by mode?

That seems to me like a hardware problem, you can try to use System Restore.

Resetting your BIOS to default or fail safe values may help you solve your problem.

Solve : Mad Dog Prowler sound card problem?

Answer»

Alright i just purchased a Mad Dog Prowler 4.1 DSP sound card.  I installed the sound card which i recognized but windows doesnt have drivers for.  I proceeded to install the drivers from the cd that was supplied with it.  When i did so the computer GOT halfway through INSTALLING the drivers, it then restarted on its own.  It then WOULD not load windows up it would continue restarting. Eventually i restarted my computer into safe mode and did a system restore which alouded my system to load up., but the sound card driver didnt install.  I also TRIED the driver off of mad dog website and the same thing happened.  I then contacted the people i go the card from and they told me to disable my onboard sound in my BIOS, and it might work, so did that and i got the same results when installing the drivers.  I also tried unistalling the drivers for my onboard sound card and tried installing the drivers which didnt work either.   I am getting very FRUSTRATED and dont know what else do.  So input would be greatly appreciated. You should completely remove the Mad Dog Prowler audio card drivers and use a program such as Advanced System Optimizer V2 to clean your registry of faulty entries. Then you should install the latest audio card drivers for your soundcard.

Solve : cd/rw failure?

Help please.

unknown make of cd/rw
makshita dvd/cd rom.

My problem is my cd/rw can't read cds.the page opens but it just says drive D but the rest is blank BUT if I leave a cd in the drive while booting up it can read it,opens and reads as normal. Is the problem with the unit, the driver or the software.
The driver installed is a default MS one. This driver also drives the dvd/cd rom.I sometimes get the impression that the driver is trying to drive both at once.

Please can anybody give me any advice?
Thankstry this:

autoplay wizzardTHANKS
Tried but failed.
initially the cd was read as it was in from boot up then it was not recognised during the test and now it will not eject either manually or by clicking "eject" but if I reboot it will probably read the cd and eject as normal.
does this help?
Thanks againare you getting this >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q315350 and to find out what make of cdrom drive etc >http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/msinfo.mspxThanks
I'm not getting any error messages, just being ignored!
The cd /r just comes up a " standard" no manufacturer is shown.
If it works when a cd is in the tray at boot up does this mean a software error?  Would i have the same problem with a new cd/r.
There was a stage when the cd/r would not read the cd until I clicked "eject" then clicked to open, it would then run normally. But it won't do EVEN that now.
Thanks for your help, any more ideas?what software are you using ....not the cd/r disk is in question the drive?/software and what o/s helps us...Thanks

I don't KNOW what else to tell you.
I've noticed that when the drive closes it tries to open again, usually twice. Is this relevant?
the drive was in my previous PC which ran win 98 SE,it was fine for about 2 years then these problems started. Is there software in the drive itself? My previous PC overheated and I wonder if something has "melted" in the cd/r.But then again it works fine on re-boot.

Solve : Stereo help?

Answer»

I am a computer novice working on my HOME after it was partly destroyed by HURRICANE Charley.  I WANT to play music from my home Computer (a Dell desktop) through my home stereo system.  How do I connet the computer to the stereo?  The stereo has the typical dual plug inputs for aux. inputs, what type of connectors and cable to I need?  Do I need anything ELSE?On your computer:  there should be several audio mini-jacks: line-in, mic, out (speaker)

out (speaker) to stereo aux-in should work for you.  Since most computer SPEAKERS are powered (amplified), the sound out is a low level out.

It looks like this, but longer:  http://www.mpja.com/productview.asp?product=11423+ACThanks Commando!  By the way, I may have a run of up to 70 feed, do you think the output from the computer will be strong enough for that?Output level should be more than sufficient.  I'd be more concerned about noise pickup from the long run.  You'll just have to try it and see if it works.  I use an old boombox do the same thing, but length is only about 8ft.Yes, a dual RCA 'tulip' plug to 3.5mm stereo headset plug adaptor at the back of the stereo, and a long shielded headset extension cable (3.5mm stereo plug to jack) between the PC sound out jack and the stereo adaptor, should do fine. Be ready for some nice sound from this, a good stereo can outperform typical computer speakers...As an alternative, would it be possible to accomplish this by instaling a LAN?  Is there a wireless hub I can use on my stereo to receive from my main computer which would eliminate the need to run wires?Certainly. You can stream both audio and video over a wireless network with the proper equipment. What equipment would you recommend?

Solve : QUESTION: Updating video card drivers?

Answer»

Should I download and UPDATE my drivers for my new Graphics Card or should I just use the ONES that came in the disc with my new card. My new card is the ATI RADION 9600XT. Should I go to the ATI web site and download the 40 MB file.Yes.

Uninstall your old drivers before continuing. Follow the instructions provided by ATI on the website.Newer drivers are usually more refined and improve performance - PARTICULARLY at the top end of cards where the company has had less time to mature drivers for those cards.  Your 9600XT should show improvement for new drivers as they become available.

Solve : canon S450 printer - photo printing - black missin?

Answer»

Ok, this is a long shot as I FOUND another forum where a lot of folks are having the same or similar problems. Maybe one of you knows if Canon or someone else resolved it? Here goes:

system = WinXP home

I just bought a new Bc-32e photo cartridge (black/CYAN/magenta ink). The problem is:  when printing any kind of a multi-color image (jpg, bmp, etc), the black or really dark areas do not print and I end up with this negative effect, showing the other color (red, blue, or COMBINATIONS thereof) instead of the dark/black. Here is what I've tried so far to resolve:

- new cartridge/head (obviously)
- updated the drivers
- tried printing on GLOSSY and matte photo paper
- tried printing both of the above on both Glossy and High Resolution print settings, and on plain paper on Plain setting (NOTE: Canon informed me that the S450 is not set up to use the 'glossy' setting, but it will print on glossy paper; doesn't appear to be a difference printing glossy or matte/satin paper).

I went into Adobe Photoshop and laid out a test pattern in CYMK color of pure cyan, magenta, and black and all three colors print true by themselves, so the various inks are getting through the cartridge and onto the paper. It's just this thing of when they try to print as an image.
thanks much,

Solve : Hard Drive installation dramas.?

Answer»

Hello all,

I have an old Compaq laptop - a 500 mhz in which the HDD carked it - a 5 gb IBM Travelstar HDD.

I got a REPLACEMENT - a toshiba HDD2918 (about 6.5 gb).

When I turn the power onto the laptop, after a few minutes of the Compaq screen,  I get an error "Fixed Disk Parameter Table or BIOS error - system halted".

Nothing else works whilst the HDD is plugged in.

With the HDD disconnected, I can load in the Win200pro boot disks through the A drive - although I am not sure what use that is whilst the HDD is not recognised.

Can anyone offer an ideas as to where I go from here?hit the del key or f10 on boot and see id fthe hard drive is there...if not try auto detect hard drives... i am glad that you have ditched the ibm travelstar h/d..nightmare...I have tried holding down the F10 and Del keys whilst booting. I get a minutes worth of the Compaq screen, THREE long beeps and "Fixed Disk Parameter Table or BIOS error - system halted" still end up on the screen.

I wasnt aware that there is an Auto-detect feature for HDD's. Can you tell me where to find that? That may well solve my little problem!!on the hard drive is there  a plastic looking jumper ...set it to cable select...and matbe the answer lies here>http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Product.jsp?prodTypeId=321957&locale=en_US&taskId=110I think we might be talking at cross purposes as little. The hard drive I have now, the Toshiba DOESNT appear to have anything 'switchable' on it. Its screwed into a little cradle that covers the pins and converts them to a FEMALE slot STYLE plug - not unlke the sort of slots you plug an AGP video card into. That complete set-up slides into the base of the laptop.

There is no cables or anything that I can get to. Of course I could be having a blonde moment............http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Armada/us/download/10562.html example of what you might have to do....Thanks for that Merlin. I tried that and couldn't manage to locate the one for my specific hdd, so I have returned from the little corner puter shop that sold me the hdd to see if they can sort it out.

But I do thank you for your time. Most appreciated.

Solve : CD Rom Harware Error - I think.?

Answer»

My computer seems to be having some CD Rom readability issues (My sad attempt at technical jargon). When I insert any number of discs into the drive my computer recognizes that a cd has been inserted into the drive (a small cd icon appears next to my mouse arrow and the cd drive light turns on on my cpu). However, the computer, after making SEVERAL, "I'm TRYING like *censored* to read this cd" noises, stops trying and simply ignores the disk. The cd icon, meant to notify me that the autoread function is in operation, blinks a few times and then vanishes. My first assumption was that it was mearly an autoread issue, so I went into "my computer" and tried to start the disk manually, but it didn't EVEN aknowledge that there was a CD in the drive at all. So I'm stuck...my pc works wonderfully but I can't read any disks. Anyone have any ideas? I'd like to exhaust troubleshooting prior to heading out to get it fixed.I tried using the Autofix program suggested in another post but it didn't even recognize that my cd rom was reading anything. It kept telling me that there wasn't a problem.Did this problem occur recently?

Perhaps you need to clean your CD-ROM drive or the CD-ROMs you have attemped to use.are these burnt disks..more info..I just purchased a cleaning disk which instructed me to insert the disk and select track # 2 in order to begin the cleaning process - the cd drive wouldn't recognize the cleaning disk and therefore wouldn't play it so as to clean the lense.

The disks are either program disks or audio disks. Neither seem to read. Oddly enough, the one disk that the computer's been able to read was a burnt disk I put in it a few days ago. (It was a disk containing a word document on it. It read that just fine).

Thanks for the ongoing help here folks. Means a lot.Oddly enough - when I got to "my computer" and double click on the 3 1/2 floppy Drive (A:) icon the computer says, "please insert a disk into drive A:"...not a surprise. However, when I click on the D: (cd) drive and there's no disk in it the icon still opens up into an EMPTY folder. Don't know if that means anything to anyone.I suggest you test the CD-ROM player on another computer.

Solve : HD Data Rate steadily decreasing?

Answer»

Greetings, I recently formatted my hard drive (WD 120 gb 8.4 sec seek time) due to some nasty trojan/adware problems that had crippled my computer previously. After removing quite a few entries in my processes using hijackthis, my computer has begun running efficiently again. However, one of the main problems before was that my computer had stopped allowing me to capture video using STUDIO 9. It would capture very choppily, and with ridiculously low frame rates, often of one frame per half a MINUTE or so. Now that I've reformatted and cleaned off my computer, Studio 9 (reinstalled) says that my data rate is not fast enough to capture. Each time I test it, it seems to be getting lower and lower. What could be causing this? My TV cap card and dvd burner are now USELESS for archiving home movies.Perhaps your airflow or fans are obstructed with dust or other objects and cause your PC to become too hot?

Solve : Poor audio when playing music CDs on PC?

Answer»

I have a VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) and a Sony CD-RW CRX140E CD-Rom Drive, and Windows XP Pro, and, my computer is connected to a stereo that works fine. Lately, when I play a music CD on my computer, whether I'm using WMP, Real Player or Musicmatch Jukebox, the sound is AWFUL. Sometimes the music is fine, but the lead VOCALS seem very faint. Or, the backup vocals and music seem very faint, and the lead vocal sounds good. The CDs work fine on other CD players, but not on my computer. But, up until recently, I would put a music CD in my drive, and the music through my stereo's speakers was great. But, not anymore. Music off the WEB, such as internet radio, sounds as good as ever, but, music CD's sound terrible. As I said, sometimes the vocals are very hard to hear, like they were far away, and, sometimes the music can be barely heard. I checked the sound settings, they seem OK. The Sounds and Audio Devices in My Computer check out OK, and the DirectX Diagnostic Tool showed that all audio and sound devices were OK and the Device Manager showed the same. Any idea what the could be? Mark.Poor audio i.e. scratchy sound

Solve : Cd recognition?

Answer»

Hi,
I was given a computer which has a cd drive but is not recognized.  How do I get it to work?  Thanks. When you say it isn't recognised, do you mean in the BIOS or do you mean that no CDs are recognised in Windows when you INSERT them?  Is the CD recognised during the boot procedure (is it listed along with the hard drive(s)?) If not, check in the BIOS that all your drives are set to auto-detect. If still no joy you need to check the physical connections to the back of the drive & again, if no joy, swap it out just to test.  If it's in Windows you're having the problem, check in Device Manager that the CDROM is listed & 'working ok'.Test it on another computer to see if it functions properly. Thanks much for he replies.

When I co into My Computer to see the drives, it does not show the cd drive so I assumed that it did not recognize the cd drive.  Thanks.  Would reinstalling Windows helps or is there another means to repair this?  I appreciate your EFFORT so much. I Need some help here.  I have a new hard DRIVE that I can not get up and running. After using all four boot DISKS - I try to load windows 2000 - it never loads!  Here is the message I am getting:

The Following value in the .SIF flie used by set up is corrupted or missing:
Value 0 on the line in SECTION [SourceDiskFiles]
  with key 'sp4.cab'
Set up can not continue

Then I get this:

NTLDR is missing

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Solve : installing 2 cd rom drives?!?HELP?

Answer» PLEASE somebody tell me how to install a 2nd cd rom drive. I have 1 cd-rw and 1 cd drive. How do I install them both on the same computer? You don't give a LOT of info about your current set-up, but ASSUMING you only have a single hard drive in the PC, your best method is to set the CD's jumper to 'slave' and the CDRW jumper to 'master'.  Then, when you have mounted the drives in their slots, ATTACH the second connector on the cable which goes to your hard drive, to the CD, and attach the other cable from the CDRW to the second IDE port on the motherboard.  You will end up with your CD on the same, primary, IDE channel as the hard drive, and the CDRW on the secondary IDE channel, on its own.  If none of this makes sense then you will NEED someone to do it for you ;-)

Solve : Problem with my floppy drive?

Answer»

Had a problem where when I went to format a floppy disk in my floppy drive and error message popped up and said no disk in drive. So i FIGURED either my drive is bad or my floppy disk....i replaced both and still have the same problem. I have checked all my connections/wires and everything is in snug. I am trying to flash my bios so my board will accept a faster athlon xp CHIP. I have windows xp pro with SP2.....any ideas on what could be wrong?

Mason_Dixon.....Have you installed a new PROCESSOR?
Do you regularly use your A drive.....when did it stop working ? Do you see it in my computer ? Will it read a disk with data on it ?

let us know

dl65  I don't regularly use my A drive, however I bought a new one last year so now I have 2 new floppy drives.

I can't remember the last time i used it so i don't know if it was working before i tried to put a new processor.

I do see the drive in my computer and the bios.

It won't read a disk with data on it, when i stick a disk in and select format, it says "please insert a disk"boot to safe mode f8 key...go in the add/remove and uninstall sp2...it should cure it...and ASK m$oft for sp2 disk....as downloading updates can go wrong?

Solve : KVM Switches?

Answer»

Due to a massive virus attack, I have forbidden my daughter from using AIM on my COMPUTER (she has her own, but is too lazy to set it up).  My ex-wife (who typed in GOGGLE vs. GOOGLE and caused the virus attack), SUGGESTED that I pick up a KVM switch, so my daughter can piggyback her computer to mine and use AIM (versus using the bleedin' telephone).
While this sounds good in theory, since it is my computer that is hooked to the phone line, and said daughter is simply accessing AIM through my system (WINDOWS ME), won't any possible virus attack my system and leave hers alone?
Please let me know.

Install a firewall, virus scan and adware scanner on all the computers connected to the Internet.

How Stuff Works - How Firewalls WORK

How Stuff Works - How Computer Viruses Work A KVM switch is purely to allow you to use the same keyboard, video & mouse on 2 computers - it has nothing to do with a shared internet connection, which is, I believe, what you mean.  Anyway, the upshot is that if you use your computer as a gateway for your daughter's computer, both are at risk.  Anyone using the internet must, as Raptor says, install a decent virus scanner, spyware scanner and software firewall on each machine as a MINIMUM protection.

Solve : Computer Acting Funny?

Answer»

I got up this morning and turned on my monitor and found that my computer had restarted in the middle of the night. Except that it hadnt finished the booting process. At the bottom of the SCREEN it said " Media Test Failure, Check Cable. DISKBOOT FAILURE, INSTERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I turned my computer off and unplugged the ide cable attched to my hard drive then plugged it back in. My computer started up fine. I decided to run Ad-Ware and scan my pc for VIRUS's while I was at school. I get HOME and my computer had restarted with the same message. I got into my bios and my hard drive isnt showing up. So I unplug the ide cable and PLUG it back in and everthing STARTS fine. What could the problem be? I have a 120 GB Maxtor HD and 256 Ram 900MHZ Windows XP Pro.i guess you have run scandisk and sfc...it maybe your hard drive run the diagnostics program>http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/?epi_menuItemID=3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068&epi_menuID=976d37cd478c5826433f226075b46068&epi_baseMenuID=976d37cd478c5826433f226075b46068&channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads/ATA%20Hard%20Drives&downloadID=22   or use this >http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000 and look under troubleshooting..ok

Solve : Hercules MUse 5.1 DVD big bug....?

Answer»

Hello,

Is there any incompatibility between the drivers of Hercules Muse 5.1 and The service pack 2 of windows XP Pro?

I ask this because I have a problem. When I start windows, at the first sound (the start sound) after Login screen, the DISPLAY stops (as it comes to sleep) nothing responds, i can just push reset button. I have the last driver PROVIDED by Hercules (6.39).

My config is
WinXp SP2
MSI K8T NEO (chip via K8T800) with athlon64 3000+
1024 Mb RAM
ATI Radeon 9600

May someone help me???what results do you get if you re-boot and keep tapping the f8 key on boot and chose last good config..........is this a self-build machine or a known make..My computer is a self build machine. I have an other sound card integrated in the motherboard (a realtek AC97) which don't give a well sound (I tested) So I changed it. So there is no last good config...
So the question is :
Is that a conflict between the two devices (I try to uninstall the AC97 whitout success)? I disable this sound card in the BIOS now.
Or is the SP2 which does not SUPPORT this Hercules.

So there is no last good config...

The last known good configuration is the last known configuration that succesfully loaded Windows. Faulty soundcard or not, the last time you were able to enter Windows will have changed this option in order for you to revert back to that POINT should things decide to go wrong.
