Solve : 2 hard drive wont work?

Answer»

ok i jus GOT an old 8 gig hard DRIVE, i wanted to install it onto my COMPUTER, for a lil extra space. First i tried just plugging it in by it selfe, and it always froze when it started loading windows 98. Now it could start in safe mode, but thats it. When i tried using both the hard DRIVES it comes up with an error, asking for a disk, that i dont have. adn in bios it doesnt detect abny hard drive when i have both plugged in, but it detects them if i have one or the other plugged in.

My main hard drive, is a 180 gig
Windows xp Home ed.
128 mb g-force vid
1 gig of ram

any help well appreciated, if you need any more system specs or info jus ask  Have you changed the jumper settings for the slave HDD?And i changed the jumpers, its always something easy. thx for the help.

do i have to have a second operating system on the slave? or can i jus pretty much delete everything? sorry for such a newb question

You only require one Operating System to use both Hard Disk Drives.

Slaves can be used without Operating Systems but they can not be booted from unless you install an Operating System on them.ok thankyou for your help

Solve : I cant see a HDD in My Computer?

Answer»

I cant see a HDD I put in my computer when I use My Computer or Windows Explorer. My Bios sees it, as does my device manager. The device manager doesnt have an allocated drive letter for the newer drive but it has one for the floppy, other 2 HDD's and my DVD/CD R combo.
I run Windows 98 SE on a 700mH AMD with 256Mb of RAM.
It's all plugged in properly and the IDE cord seems to work because BIOS and DM can see the HDD.
How can I set the new HDD so I can use it?TRY disabling it in the device manager and rebooting.Windows 98 has difficulty is seeing more than 2 physical drives.  Use this UTILITY:  http://www.v72735.f2s.com/LetAssig/I TRIED both of those but niether works.
Letter assigner doesnt even see the other HDD either. To summarize, you have 3 hard drives and 1 DVD/CDRW.

You should have 2 Masters and 2 Slaves, one each on PRIMARY and Secondary.

Only thing I can thing of, is your new drive larger than 64GB or 137GB?  What size is it?The 3 hard drives are 3G, 6G and 8G plus a DVDROM/CDR.
The 3 is the primary master with the 8 as its slave with the CDR as secondary master and the 6 being its slave.Have you tried booting from a boot disk and running fdisk to CHECK if there is actually a partition on the drive and that its formated?

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I am having trouble with my computer. I have everything plugged into a power strip and in the morning I flip the switch on the power strip and then press the ON button on the TOWER. Often the tower just beeps once as usual and freezes solid. If I push the "reset" button on the tower a few times it will finally turn on and once it gets to the clouds everything is fine. This didn’t USED to of happen. I always shut the machine without problem and with no ERRORS. Oh… By the way I use Version 98 SE. You may wish to leave your computer connected to the power strip at all time.. I used to disconnect it from the power grid and my CMOS battery was drained very quickly.

Solve : Travelmate won't turn on!?

Answer»

AHHH!!.  I was just compiling a large program on my Acer 243XC when it TURNED itself off and now won't restart.

THe fan was on constantly but it didn't SEEM too hot.  Now when I turn it on the fan starts-up full blast and then the laptop turns off again.

If I try to turn it on the fan starts but then the computer turns off.  If i then try again I can hear a BLIP from the speaker but nothing else.  I have to wait about 1 min before I can try again.

What's going on?how LONG have you had this laptop on for...leave it for five mins and try to boot it again some motherboards do this to prevent any damage...I had it on for about 1 hour compiling X11 for Linux so it was WORKING fairly hard.  Always been a bit suspicioius of how often the fan came on but then it is a Celeron 2.5gHz - not known for having a low running temp.

Just tried turning it on again having left it for about 45 mins but the same thing happens.

I think may be the CPU has burned out, but normally the fan will crank up a few notches if it starts to get really hot but it didn't do this.

Ahh, just got wireless working really well in Linux as well.all sorted - it was a dodgy plug and the computers fine!!!!!!!!!

Solve : Which RAM should I use??

Answer»

I have a motherboard that accepts both DDR and SD RAM.  I have 2X256MB 2100 DDR RAM and i have 2X512MB 133 SD RAM.  I have a pentium 4 2.4ghz processor running 533 i think.  I mostly use my computer for INTERNET, dont really play games.  Which ram should i use?You can use either the 512MB of DDR or 1GB of SDRAM, but not both?  You have 2 SLOTS?

That's PC133 SDRAM?  Sell it, it's not manufactured anymore and is priced higher than NEWER DDR RAM.

DDR RAM is faster, you probably won't notice the difference, whatever you use.I have four slots, two for DDR and two for SDRAM.  I can not use both types at the same time.

Yes PC133 SDRAM.  Where would i be able to sell it?Ebay. How MUCH could I get for it?New prices here:

Solve : Shutting down bad for my computer??

Answer»

Many people keep their PCs running day and night and never turn them off.  I heard this was better for your computer something to the TUNE of,  every time you restart a small shock of electricity is created, and when done day after day, it deteriorates the MOTHERBOARD.  Is this BS?  I've got a laptop replacement and WONDER if I should keep it on all the time or not...
This is not a problem with modern computers.  My laptop is 7 years old and still going STRONG.  Switch it offI think keeping it on causes more wear 'n tear than shutting it down.

Solve : new computer missing 7 GB!!?

Answer»

Just bought a new computer with 80 MB, but the "my computer" windows shows 63 in C drive, and 10 in D.  Also, there is nothing in the D drive yet it says 9.38/10 GB REMAIN.  C drive has 51.5/63 GB. I understand the C drive has programs installed and eats up the memory, but why starting off from 63 and not 70?  And so then, what is eating up .62 GB in the D drive??

I've heard the computer computes GBs in a different way which leads to this...

Any explanations?

Inspiron 8200 Notebook or DIMENSION 8200 Desktop?
If desktop (how did you DROP a desktop?), RAM question answered here:

Maybe motherboard is bad, maybe power supply, could be anything, if you dropped it.

I was walkign out the front door with it on one of my many moves and the door hooked my BACKPACK tripping me.  It worked for like 6 months after just giving me an error saying problems finding hard drive I would hit f1 and it would boot.   It still turns on so I don't think it's power supply,  anyone know if I can get just any mother board to replace it or does it have to be dell?

Solve : CMOS battery low?

Answer»

I've got a 35-9906-01 socket 7 mainboard here (VIA, I think)

The CMOS battery was low when I got it, so I replaced the battery with a new one (Brand new from Gigabyte) and it still gives me the same error.

Is there something wrong with the connector or did I overlook something? Quote

...did I overlook something?

Yes.  You failed to describe the error.
It says CMOS battery Low after testing the memory. Sometimes it mentions CMOS Checksum error but that can be removed by loading BIOS fail-safe defaults.

What else is there to tell, Computer Commando?

I replaced the CMOS battery with a brand new one supplied by Gigabyte less than 2 months ago. I tried switching batteries back and forth, moving them around, no luck.

Booting without CMOS battery generates the same error. Quote
You failed to describe the error.

Haha even with over 2k posts Raptor is still a CH newbi.

*poke* Don't you have a galaxy to defend?  I suspect PART of m'board is dead.

CMOS battery supplies power to CMOS memory and RTC (real-time clock, which is usually made my Dallas Semiconductor).  BIOS chip is permanenetly or semi-permanently WRITTEN (semi-perm is flash BIOS).  Default-BIOS loads to CMOS memory, then you make changes in BIOS (which is really changes to BIOS loaded into CMOS memory) and is saved and held in CMOS memory by battery.

CMOS checksum error means CMOS memory is not operating properly.  Same results with new battery means nothing is being saved to CMOS memory.

Does BIOS retain any changes made if you don't turn the computer off?  Make some changes, then do a warm boot, go back to BIOS, if changes are still there, and if you only lose changes when computer is turned off, battery hold-up circuit is dead. Quote

Maybe just a "Senior Moment".  Otherwise known as a "touch of Alzheimers".

Of course, working with all this computer hardware will make anyone a little nuts.

Now Raptor might understand why Microsoft wants little to do with computer hardware.  That being the basis of the problem...Software Programmers have little or no understanding of the hardware.

It cannot remember any settings either.

LIKE you claimed to be a super model? Wow, boy, you never should have sent those photos over.  Correction:

There was no CMOS battery present when I did as I said two  posts ago.

However, there is now and it is still resetting the clock to zero after a few seconds.

It occasionally remembers the changes I made to the BIOS, and it occasionally goes beyond the POST and attempts to find booting information, but most of the time I receive CMOS RELATED errors. Even when resetting the BIOS.

(CMOS Checksum error, CMOS battery low, CMOS resolution wrong, etc) Quote

Please follow steps outlined in Reply#5, and then report back.
try to find the jumper fort the cmos system. Remove it.  Turn computer on for about 30 sec.  Then shut down.  Pur the jumper back and restart the copmuter.  This should reser the cmos settings to the original configuration. The jumper should be somewhere close to the battery. Quote

I did as you said: I changed a few settings and then reset, each time I'd get a different CMOS error, but it also forgot what I had changed.

It cannot even KEEP track of time for more than 3 seconds when equipped with a brand new CMOS battery.

I have done as you said, and it had little or no effect. Removing the CMOS battery should also reset your BIOS.

Solve : Computer won't fully turn off?

Answer» HI,
If anyone could HELP me i'd be very grateful.  I have  an AMD Athlon K7VT2.  One day I was testing another persons computer and removed the power suppy and then REINSTALLED it in my computer.  Ever since then the computer will shutdown but I cannot get it to turn off completely, even using the power BUTTON on the front, it has to be turned off at the back.  This doesn't bother me, but when I turn the computer on, XP always crashes at least once.  Any advice on this would help me alot.
Thanks,
Pete  Have you checked the CMOS power settings?yeah, I reset all the settings to default and checked that the power settings weren't on 'turn off to standly' or anythingDid you properly connect all the power cables?Yeah, and I tryed another power supply in case that supply, cable or connector was faulty and the exact same thing happened.  I also updated the bios and all the drivers for that motherboard. You've missed something...m'board connector not locked or OBSCURE BIOS setting, or some wire is loose.

http://www.duxcw.com/faq/ps/ps1.htmyou say winxp crashes at least once what error /stop messages? There are no error messages.  The computer just suddenly stops working, usually when XP has just started and sometimes when it is loading up.  The only option is to turn it off at the back and start again.

Solve : optical mouse & serial port?

i have now bought an optical mouse but it wont work through the same convertor jack  BETTER to use the PS2 port.the computer does not have a ps2 port that s why i'm using the ps2 to serial convertor.  Have you attempted to install the drivers that MAY have come with the mouse? Quote

Hate to tell you...but...if it has no PS2 port...the computer is not even a Pentium 1.  The mouse you just bought is worth more than the computer.

Supply more info on computer (make, model) and what version of DOS and/or Windows you are using.computer - pentium 1
cpu -  mmx 166mhz
64 meg ram

yes i installed the drivers that came with the mouse
i get the red light at the base of the mouse to light up but THATS as far as get to making it work.
sorry i forgot to add

windows 98
Are you certain you have no PS/2 port? It may be black rather than the colour of your mouse's plug.It should be the port directly above the keyboard port.  If it's a tower, it's to the SIDE.

Why do you need to download drivers for the various components?  Is the computer not working?

That's probably because you are the one has to install drivers..

Perhaps you haven't got the proper drivers?

With the AMOUNT of information you've provided us with, we'll have to spend the next few days calculating..Why not try this>http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/when i start up the comp. i get message box telling me no drivers found for various hardware. Then install the proper drivers.shouldn't the drivers load from win2k? and if not, how do I go about finding out what hardware I have so I can OBTAIN correct drivers? Solve : Computer capabilities?

Answer»

This is probably such a simple question that it borders on moronic.   HOw do I figure out what my computers capabilities are?  I wanted to BUY an MP3 player.  The fellow told me I had to have 2.8 GHZ processor, 25gmb Memory, 2.0 GB Hard Drive, USB 1.0 or 2.0, and a firewire port.  I've only got a very basic idea of what any of that means.  I've got no idea if my home computer or my laptop has those capabilities.
    I've got a Gateway EV700 and a Dell LATITUDE CP M233ST.

Please and THANK you for your time,

Solve : video cards - chips?

Answer»

what is the best way to change out a set of chips - in other words - i want to take 2 out of one and replace in another - but without ruining them?  finally figured out what was going on with an old problem.....Don't know the type of memory chips on your video card, but some I'v seen look like notebook memory.  Look at this:  http://www.crucial.com/install/sodimm2.aspnot sure how to explain it - but there are 2 brown squares with small black chips - attached to the card.  one card doesn't work (the one that has the chips) which is the one i FOUND to be causing my boot-less problem.  the other card works, but does not have those chips in the brown squares - or holders - the computer is running fine - but video has lines all through it - i assume its those chips missing - and want to exchange them - but they don't seem to want to pop out without force - don't want to hurt them. What is make and model of video card?  Are both cards identical?  If not, make and model of both.both are by s3 -one not working is trio64v+, the other is trio 64v/dx - was hunting but can't find much on it.I have an old S3 in my computer.  Here's their website:  http://www.s3graphics.com/

Here's a link to an S3 test utility:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/s3trio.html

There should be a small metal CLIP on either side of the memory chip, push them out and flip the chip forward, then slide the memory out.

Or does it look like thiswell, that picture looks a bit older than the one i have - but it's not the memory chip missing out of it - it's 2 of the other ones - as far as the test site - that would be good - if i had the other computer on line, but at the moment i don't - i swear I'll get this worked out somehow.  since s3 doesn't make them anymore - where is a good spot to find the pictures, and maybe specs Quote

...where is a good spot to find the pictures, and maybe specs

I couldn't find any.  I just looked through my pile of old parts and I found a S3 Trio64V2/DX,with empty sockets.  The 2 empty sockets are for extra memory.  With a small screwdriver, gently pry the memory chips from one BOARD and install on the other board.  Be careful of orientation, there's a corner cut off the brown socket...that is pin-1.  If you install upside down, it will surely blow up.  No guarantee the lines are from lack of memory, could be damaged memory already on card.
thank you thank you.......

i had to pry them out - that's what i was afraid of - but since the card i pried them from was already bad (i checked it in 3 puters) - it couldn't hurt to try - and it worked - the 64dx was just something i found in - alas - a pile of my old junk - and decided to try it - it worked - just not very well - adding the extra memory did take the lines and garbage out.

anyway - its a great thing - i have my old baby back -   Quote

Cool!!  It's nice when it works.  And when you do it yourself.  I see you're in ST. Pete, I'm in Jupiter/PBG.  Small WORLD, huh?
love messing with this stuff - but sometimes ya just gotta put it down!  thanx again - now that i have my old guy back, can put the lovely compaq in a kids room, and start building the next monster.....  well - here i go again!  it worked for a while - and then quit again.  so - is it possible - aside from having 2 bad video cards (which since they're both old its possible for both to have been about dead) - anyway - is it possible for something on the MB to be blowing out the video?  this is pretty wierd for me - am taking the chips out of this one too and trying again - but it's still stange!

Solve : The Mystery of the Power Supply Killer?

Answer»

Ok it started out as a normal day of computing - filesharing, watching movies, listening to music, and then when I played Age of Myth, poof the comuter turned off. And it did not turn back on. No lights, no fan, no sign of any jolt of energy anywhere.

So after a long TIME of denial, I noticed my 650w "extremo power" dual fan power supply had the smell of IHOP on a busy day. I wondered why after day after day of constant USE of downloading videos, burning DVD's, gaming, audio engineering, college papers, web design, etc etc, why burn out now? I couldnt figure out the answer.

So I put in a regular 420w power supply and my computer worked again. I played around with it, to see if anything weird happened. I uninstalled the virus scanner, installed another one, websurfed here and there, and then I played Age of Myth and after about half an hour of play, my computer shut down again! But this time it was different, even THOUGH it did not turn back on, there was a light still on. So I unplugged it for about two minutes.

When I plugged it back in, I was able to turn my computer back on. Really confused as to what the *censored* could behind this altered dimension of wacky hardware I chose to run my antivirus program which at that point I thought maybe there is some kind of state of the art virus that is burning my power supplies. After about half an hour to 40 minutes of virus scanning my comuter made this "poof" sound and my computer has not been able to turn back on since.

I already lost a 650w dual fan psu and a 420w psu because of this mystery. I have a 550w psu left but I dont want to install it until I know what is causing this havoc. I do have 250w to test any ideas.

I have a relatively high performance system. 2 IEDE HDD's (with fans), 2 SATA HDD's (with fans), 1 21in and 1 17in monitor, 1gb pc 3200 memory, G-Force 5600 256mb video card, Delta 66 audio card with the Omni Studio external interface, a DVDburner, a DVD/CDR combo, a front panel digital display, side and roof led fans, and a led fan in the back and also two game pads, Pocket PC, and a digital camera all connected to USB ports. This was all working just fine, for close to half a year already.

Any ideas WOULD be greatly appreciated. This happened to me.  Took me months to find the problem.  There is probably one card or device that has SHORTED out.  A short will turn off the power supply (they are short circuit protected).  When the card or device cools, it may start working again.  In my case, it was a high power audio card with it's own 12VDC connector from the power supply.  One day, it stayed shorted.  I found it by opening the case, looking inside and continually pushing the power button. I saw a flash of light just before the power supply shuts down.  Pulled the audio card and could see a burned surface mount capacitor next to the audio output transistor.

I'll bet if you install the original power supply it will work (for a little while), unless the bad card is finally dead.

Solve : Different RAM manufacturers?

Answer»

For those of you who helped me with my computer OS problems, thanks a lot. The computer is built and running great. However, I am noticing a little lag when playing UTk4, and I THINK my RAM might be the culprit. The lag gets no better or worse when I raise or lower the graphical quality, so I know it's not the video card. Here are my specs:

Athon 64 2800+
Radeon 9800 pro 128MB 256Bit
Kingmax DDR PC-3200 DDR 512MB

Does only having 512MB of RAM bottle neck my system? If so, can I buy another 512MB of the same type of RAM even if it's made by different manufacturers?

Is iThe ram will work but if your MB has dual memory access controllers, it will default to one. Dual access requires perfectly matched modules and they sold that way.Do you mean online lag?2K dummy's comments are quite right for a few months back, but a lot of more recent motherboards are a lot more tolerant of differing RAM sticks in dual-channel operation.

And Raptor's question is quite to the point...what do you mean by 'lag'?  It's very unlikely 512MB of RAM is bottlenecking your system for the purposes of intense 3D graphics.Srry it's taken me so long to reply... To answer your questions, the lag comes while I am playing certain games such as Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic. What's strange about this is that the game only lags when I am out in large open areas such as Dantooine. While I'm in a city that's full of people such as Taris, everything runs FLAWLESSLY. I still think the ram is bottlenecking my system because I find it hard to believe that a 64 bit processor and a Radeon 9800 pro would have trouble running most games on the market. Am I crazy? Also, just to note: I am using 512 MB Kingston PC-3200 DDR RAM.

Something I just noticed is that my 64 bit processor only runs at 1.8 gigahertz. Maybe that's the problem.question what operating system is been used?try a software progam called freeram xp....final check are the disks sound ...and does this happen when playing games for a while....I RECALL reading that 64 Bit processors actually LOWERS the amount of FPS you can get in games..  Statistics backed that up.

Do you think that will change once the 64 bit OS comes out? Quote

Solve : Sound card issue please HELLLPPPP....?

Answer»

Hi there,

I have come across your helpful site from a search engine... for a puter novice like me I guess I was lucky...

Now to my problem...

I have installed a YAMAHA DS-XG 724 F -V PCI sound card (bought off ebay) with midi port onto my NT compaq S710 and I have also downloaded the driver for it.

The computer has a sound card already on it.

Uptil now the sound comes thru the computer not thru the new sound card as I have connected the speakers to the new out put but there is nothing coming out.

The last thing I have tried to do is to go into BIOS and disable the original sound card but I don't think I did a GOOD job or it just didn't work because when I restarted I had NO SOUND whatsoever... So I went back in and undid it...

Now I don't know what to do next...

Can anyone HELP me???

Thanx heaps   Windows NT 4.0???  Does Windows NT Device Manager see the new audio card?  If not, the audio card may be no good.Install proper drivers ?sometimes (not always) - you can try going into device manager and try either reinstalling the drivers, or deleting the card out of device manager and REBOOT - let the puter detect it - see what happens.....

Solve : Monitor probem...?

Answer»

I was running WINDOWS XP on a 20 GB hard drive, and bought a new 120 GB hard drive.  I installed XP on the 20 GB drive, and then at home, I SWITCHED the drives to put the 120GB as the master with Windows XP, and then hooked up the 20GB as the slave.

At home, everything was running fine on a monitor at home.  I brought my tower back to school and hooked it up to my monitor here, and it boots up as far as the black "Windows XP" screen, and then the monitor completely goes blank.  I know it is getting past the blue "Welcome" screen and WindowsXP is starting up because I can hear the OPENING sound through my speakers -- but my screen is completely blank.  The light on the monitor is green, but I cannot use any of the moving/resizing options (that light doesn't light up).

I disconnected the 120GB hard drive and hooked up the 20GB as the master, and Windows LOADS fine and I can see it on the monitor (what I am on right now).

Anyone have ANY idea why my monitor is just basically shutting down (going completely black) right before I get to the welcome screen?  I can see it booting up, so I know it is connected properly, and there are no errors while I boot.

Help?!

maybe 120gig hard drive has nothing on it?>info>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q314503&ID=KB;EN-US;q314503It does, because when I used it at home, windows XP loads fine on the 120 GB hard drive.

I also get the XP screen right before the Welcome screen, and can hear the windows loading (it also plays the soundfile when I shut off my computer manually) but I cannot see a thing, it's a blank screen...

Solve : speed of my cd-rom?

Answer»

Hi.
Ive got a bit of a problem. When I insert a music CD in the cd-rom the speed in which it is play is faster than normal, even when I save the tracks the speed is not normal. When I listen real audio the speed is faster than normal as well; that is why it stops every 5 second to 'fill' the buffer, play sound very FAST and STOP again to fill the buffer. I dont really know if it is because of the cd-rom or software. I used Real Player and Windows Media Player and it doesn't make any difference.
Thank you for your help.
Juanjuanitos.....Is this something which has just started ?
Have you added anything to your system ...ie hardware or software updates ? I would probably start by uninstalling the sound card and its drivers ......then reboot and be sure that the sound card has been removed. Then shut down and plug the sound card back in again.....in a differant slot if possible and then restart the pc......let it find the new hardware and then install the drivers if asked to do so . If this didnt change anything ...then I would be looking at the cd-rom itself.

let us know how you make out .

dl65 Get rid of RealOne Player and delete its directories. Windows Media Player, Winamp, and MediaMatch Jukebox don't cause as many problems as RealMedia products.

Test the CDROM with a headset in the front jack, if it plays normally you have a codec problem that may be solvable by uninstalling all your media players and yanking the sound card, then re-installing the sound card and all media players except RealMedia. If the front jack audio is bad, get a new CDRW drive from a Web DISCOUNTER...i am with you on this one MalikTous real player another spyware fanatic program?sometimes comes bundled with tiscali ...isp...oops ...try USING windows media player... but im giong to hae to AGREE with merlin and dl65

Solve : just added new hard drive and having issues?

Answer»

ok so my old harddrive was partitioned...with only 5 gigs on the first drive, and it has been out of space for a while and I couldnt install software even to the d drive.

So my solution was to get a new harddrive and have it as the master and my old one as the slave drive.  I did that and the new harddrive works fine....

Basically...Im wondering if there's an easy way to transfer the software from my old harddrive to the new one...or create some kind of local NETWORK so the new harddrive can find all the programs from the old one so I dont have to REINSTALL them all....If you have any idea what I could do e-mail me at [email protected] send me an imYou could mount both Hard Disk Drives in the same case and them set as Slave and Master to QUICKLY and easily transfer files.that's what I did...but the programs didnt transfer from one to the otherDoes the BIOS properly detect the drives?

Does it show you an error when you attempt to transfer files?

yea i get an error when I try to open the programs...some it will like automatically install them on the G drive once i click on them....

but a lot of others it tells me the program isnt installed...and then it just closesCan you normally access the HDD from Windows?yea I can access it fine...its just htat the programs arent all liking me I guess...

but i can search through all the HARDDRIVES fine...its not a hardware issue i think its software...but i couldnt figure out where in xp professional i could go to fix itYou can use the software from the hard drive manufacturer to image the old drive to the new drive.

Solve : Hard Disk Drive testing utilities?

Answer»

I have noticed that in a few posts, people are recommended to test their HDD. How do I do that and what do I get out of it?

Will it help me determine how long my HDD is going to last and what I can do to make the most out of it?

winxp has disk management which tells you about the health of your hard DRIVE...my person VIEW is dont partition the hard drive...saves wear and tear..one operarting system one hard drive and so on..Where can I find that tool?

Are there no HDD specific tools that have been developed by the manufacturer?http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000  there are hard drive manufactors DIAGNOSTIC tools like power maxblast=maxtor seagate and western digital ALSO have them ....or this >http://www.piki.cz/e_DriveHealth.htmAre these tools free?

Thank you for the article, I will look into it.

The reason I ask is because I bought a  few second hand (older) Hard Disk Drives that I wish to test to see if they are reliable.will winxp /bios detect them?you should now by now how fussy winxp can be..hopefully all will be ok...They will not be used with WINDOWS XP, so no worries there, Merlin.

I have not yet tested them I will do so in a few days, they were stored in a rather cold environment and have to be on room temperature first.

Since then computer is dead. On pressing Power-on switch even power indicator LED does not glow. Voltage at the plug that goes into DC power jack on computer is correct,19.5V.It seems surge from musical instruments damaged power line in computer and battery had taken over at some point of time. Please advise.Laptop questions and answersLaptop batteries are so-called "smart batteries", which have microchips imbedded.  The battery communicates with the BIOS and with Windows.  Many laptops will not start without a battery or with a dead battery, even with AC power brick.  Computer appears to be "stuck" in standby.

You said:  "...Voltage at the plug that goes into DC power jack on computer is correct,19.5V..."  Does charge indicator light on laptop show that battery is charging?  If, yes, let it charge the battery.

To charge the battery pack
1 Connect the AC adapter to the computer.
2 Insert the battery pack.
The computer automatically charges the battery (the battery indicator light flashes in a double blink pattern as the battery charges).
3 When the battery is 85% full, the battery indicator light turns off. For PCGFX120/FX120K, PCG-FX140/FX140K models, this process takes
approximately 1.5 hours. For PCG-FX150/FX150K, PCG-FX170/FX170K, PCG-FX190/FX190K models, this process takes approximately 3.0 hours.

To charge the battery completely, continue charging for an additional hour. See “Displaying Battery Information”

Double blink---------The battery is charging.

Solve : New hard drive on an old (500megahertz)dell comput?

Answer»

I have an xps 500 megahertz Dell computer in which the hard drive (c: drive) just died.  Can I USE a new hard drive to replace it? Can anybody recommend which one to buy?

ThanksSeagate is a very well known brand. I have a Maxtor 80 GB/7200 RPM/8MB cache and must say I am very pleased with it. I also have a SMALLER Seagate (30 GB) which still runs QUITE steadily even though it is +/- 3 years old.

I've had very good luck with Western Digital.  Limit your size to 120GB or the Dell's BIOS might not see the full size.  Check with Dell, you might need a BIOS upgrade, ANYWAY.

Solve : 2nd Hard drive... where are you??

Answer»

I have a 2 month old desktop with 80gig, and 30 gig hard disk.  On the primary IDE I have the 80 gig, and a CD-RW CONNECTED.  On the secondary IDE I have the 30 gig hard disk by itself set as master.  I've been using this configuration for the past 2 months,  then suddenly this morning, my system could not detect my smaller hard drive.  I switched cables and ide channels but the bios still could not detect my hard disk.

The 30 gig is around four years old.  My system suddenly cannot detect this hard drive but it detects my bigger hard drive.  By the WAY, my bios is set on auto.

Can anyone help???  If it is a hardware issue, how can I recover the files that is in my problem hard drive, when it cannot be detected by my system?

I appreciate any suggestions...change the 30gig to slave drive..Is the 30GB DETECTING in BIOS?

if not, try reconfiguring:

First see if the secondary controller will see the CDROM drive alone, set as either Master or Slave. If it does, your IDE channel is probably OK.

Next, see if the 30GB will recognise as slave to the 80GB. If so, run it like that, the CDROM should never be on the primary channel anyway...

If the 30GB balks at recognising in BIOS (either channel) but the CDROM works on second channel, try removing the 30GB drive and tapping it sideways against your hand, not too roughly, to unjam the platters and/or head servo. If it runs now, copy everything off it or remount it upside down to prevent further damage to WORN bearing surfaces.

BTW, configuring so your CDROM is not on the primary channel with your boot HD should speed the HD response SIGNIFICANTLY.

Solve : messed up speakers?

my speakers are messed up!!!!  they only output fuzzy sounds instead of music.  and to here those sounds, you have to hold the speaker up to your ear. help plzzzz!!Normally this happens if you have some really cheap and nasty speakers. The manufacturers use cheaper components, so the quality of sound is generally pretty poor - especially higher and lower frequencies.

If you do have cheap speakers (by cheap, I mean about £15-20 or less, like the ones you normally get when you buy a PC), you've got a choice of either buy better ones or LIVE with it. If you know they're expensive ones that aren't supposed to be MAKING this noise, pray it's still in warrenty and get a replacement. This article may be of interest:

Solve : cd-rom help plz!!?

Answer»

i've had a friend of mine burn 4 different cds(video cd)...3 of which are the same content.

one cd is about 30 minutes in length...and it plays great in my cd-rom...i have a cd-rom and dvd/cd player/writer......but the 3 cd's that he made that are the same in content...but i'd say they are 70 minutes in length will not play.

every cd..burned or original..and any dvd i put in always plays...except for this perticular cd.....and we have tried 3 different cd's to put the content on.

when i put the cd in my cd-rom......it begins to run...but then STOPS...with out asking me what action i want to take.....then when i GO to My Computer....it shows a disk in the F drive...which is the cd-rom drive...but when i click the cd icon...it reads...." F:/ is not accesible.  The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable"

i can play anything except for these 3 cds it seems...and it is on cd-r's that i have played before in my pc.

any IDEAS on why this problem??...or anything i can or need to do to get this cd to play??

my friend says that he tried the cd in 7 different computers and it played fine...so i am curious why it doesn't play in mine??...is it the structure of the cd???....do i just need to clean my cd-rom??...any help would be greatly appreciated.....thank you!!Could you summarize your problem?

What kind of CD's are they? CD-RW or CD-R? Do they all have the exact same content? Do they not load? Does Windows give you a no CD error?

Cleaning your CD-ROM drive is a good idea.the cds are sony 700mb cd-r...and the 3 that will not play all have the same content...and the one that does play has the same types of files...but is shorter in length..is that means anything..lol.

when i put the cd in my player it tries to load....it runs...but then stops.

i do not get a no cd error....when i go to My Computer in the Control Panel...it shows a cd in the F drive...but the cd has no name....this happens for all 3.

it just always shows this instead....

...." F:/ is not accesible.  The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable"

so i dunno why it shows this....but any ideas on what i may need to do to fix..if any???And your friend claims that the CD's work on 7 other computers?

Perhaps your CD-ROM drive can not work properly with that BRAND of recordable CD's.that could be the case......but i do have one of the cds he made...that the same brand...same type...and that one plays.

wonder if cleaning the cd-rom will help???

or are there any other possibilities that could cause this one cd not to play...on 3 different cds??

and why does it say...disk structure corrupted and unreadable??.....for all 3 cds??

just curious of any possible solutions if any....thanks alot!!would any firmware help the situation?

..or should i just accept that one cd....burned on 3 different cds will not play?

any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.....i don't think my cd-rom is reckonizing the cds or something.....because any cd/dvd i put in on the drive in "My Computer" it always shows a name...or a date..for the cd/dvd...and for these perticular cds it does not.

any thoughts on that? What kind of data is on these CD's?Please clarify:  Do CD's work in DVD player/writer, but do not work in CD-ROM?its mpg data on the cd....and it will not play in either cd-rom..or in the dvd player/writer.

its just this data that won't play it seems......because its been burned onto 3 different cds.

but i have the same type of data(mpg) on several other cd..that i have burned...or that some one else has burned...and they play great!!

so why does these cds with this data bring an error pop up of.......... F:/ is not accesible.  The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable??

plz help if possible..thanks!Okay...what operating system on your computer?  What operating system on the other 7 computers?  Are you trying to play the CD's in Windows Media Player or Winamp or something else?

You can download Nero InfoTool.  It may help to DIAGNOSE the problem:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=120
i have windows xp on my pc....the 7 others...i dunno what they were.

when i put the cd in the cd-rom.......it doesn't give me any options to choose what to play it with....so thats when i just go to Control Panel.....then....My Computer and try to open the cd there.

thats when it gives me the F drive message...about the structure......and it being corrupted and unreadable.

what do you think i should try?If it makes you feel any better, this is a common problem.  CD's burned on one machine cannot be read on another machine.  This has been happening ever since CD burners were introduced and it doesn't seem to be getting a lot better.  Sometimes it's the hardware and sometimes its the burning software used.  I've had the most success with Nero, none with Roxio Easy CD Creator.  Usually, Sony CD-R's are good.  Sometimes the generic "white label" ones are better.

As long as anything you burn on your DVD burner works, you're okay.  What burning software do you use?

Download the NeroTool and put the CD in either drive and see if the tool sees it.ok..i will try this....you mean the Nero Info Tool?

thanks for the help!!!!i did the nero tool....and it reads the cd.

it says data cd(mode2)

what can i do from this point?well, they all play now!

seems like after i put the cd in....i have to run to nero tool...then after that runs...the cd plays...and it works for all of them!

cool!!.....thanks for the info on that...that was a huge help for me

Solve : Hard drive took a crap on a brick?

Answer»

I'm not going to bother you with the whole soap opera that is my latest computer problem, I'm just going to state the facts here:

- I cannot boot to my 120 GB F drive. It had Windows XP on it, and was made by Western Digital. It worked fine for about eight months, but this past week it would give me occasional "Unknown Hard ERROR" reports and now won't even get to the Windows XP screen.

- I attempted to reinstall Windows XP when all other things failed. (Floppy drive doesn't work any longer, recovery CD was using an "unsupported file SYSTEM".) Windows XP did not let me install on the F: drive.

- I attempted to install Mandrakelinux on my F: drive. It gave me a much more specific error: it could not access the partition file.

- I am currently working on my 2 year old 40GB C: drive with Mandrakelinux installed using the same IDE cable and experience no problems, beyond how hard it is to install stuff.... (Grumble, grumble.)

- As I had said, my floppy drive does not work - it won't recognize that there is a floppy disk in it, so I could not run the diagnostic utility provided by Western Digital.

Is there anything I can do to fix this drive? I would be extremely disappointed to lose it: it cost $70 and has 120GBs of space...

Thanks in advance.
Edit/Delete Messagetry re-booting and hit the f8 key keep TAPPING it and chose the LAST good config..it may work?>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314474  what make is this pcNothing.

Make is XP Home Edition. (For that drive)Is this PC provided with a real Windows XP disk or just a (HP, Compaq, eMachines, Dell, etc.) stupid recovery disk? You should be able to mount the 120GB as primary SINGLE, boot to the XP CD (set your BIOS so the CDROM is the first boot drive), and reformat and load XP to the 120G (111 actual GB) hard drive.

WD should provide a CD copy of Data Lifeguard Tools you can run to test the drive. The website may have it on ISO, or you can get a buddy to copy your floppy to a 650MB or 190MB CD...I do have an XP installation CD. When I tried to install it the first time, it refused to partition it. When I tried a second time, it didn't even show up on the list.

Formatting will not do any good - if the BIOS cannot DETECT it, neither will Windows.http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000The bios does recognize the hdIf you can get to the disk administration tool (I'm asssuming you're in WinXP or 2K/NT) you should be able to locate the physical disk and see what KIND of partitions it has on it.

WARNING: If you have data on the disk, DO NOT reformat to access the disk. Use a Knoppix LiveCD or SIMILAR tool that will access the existing partition and copy your data over to the first HD or to CDs first.

Then repartition the second HD and format it as NTFS or FAT32 or whatever you WANT to use...

Did you properly uninstall the previous drivers and follow the extract instructions on how to install updated drivers?

What game does this apply to?

VPU Recover White paper

Connecting a secondary CRT and enabling VPU Recover results in the Operating System failing to restore itself

Psychotoxic: Starting a new game may result in the game failing to load or producing a VPU recover error

Solve : PC starts automatically?

Answer»

Hi, my computer starts automatically as soon as i plug it in. You usually have to TURN it on. Also, nothing is happening with the monitor. These 2 problems originally occured simultaneously. Please help!!! there was a Trojan Horse virus on it if that's any help. I ran AVG, but a trojan downloader file kept appearing and thus so did the trojan.Scan for spyware as well.

You may be ABLE to set the computer's power on behaviour in the BIOS.

BIOS information and helpJackson Kelly.......Perhaps you could let us in on which pest  AVG has identified . Have you confirmed that the on /off switch or button is functioning properly ?

let us KNOW

dl65  control panel/system/advanced/settings system failure/uncheck the -automatically restart....feature...does it cure it?It might be handy to check if you have your Wake On Lan Cable plugged into the mobo?

//EDIT
So it turns on a soon as you plug it in? Could it be that the switch in the CASE is stuck?

(Also Check mobo settings..)

Solve : Radeon fails to install?

Answer»

No i put it in computer installed the driver and it asked me to reboot so that it could do the tests so then i rebooted and before i reached desktop screen i got this error message

Windows was unable to save all the data for the FILE C:\Documents and settings\Network\Services\local settings\desktop.ini. The data has been lost. this error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection please try to save the file elsewhere.

and in reply to Raptor when i open the desktop.ini file using NOTEPAD i dont see anything therethis sounds crazy i am like that but hit the f8 on boot and chose the last good config...it may force winxp to use your graphics card....give it a go...this should also force winxp to use the drivers it has....and force winxp to sort out irq problem if it has any...forwards thinking>You can try adding to the Desktop.ini what I have quoted. But I'd back up important FILES first if I were you..Can i just ask one more thing on this subject, What will happen if i delete the Desktop.ini will windows create another in its place. Raptor how do i make a Desktop.ini using notepad this may work as somone else suggested i do the same thingI wouldn't bet on it.

Should you remove the file (You can move it to another location and rename it, to be safe) make backups of (important) files before you do so.how do i make a new desktop.ini using notepadInsert the information I quoted

Be warned, this may be personalized per Windows and could severly cause some serious chaos, knowing Windows.. .
Perhaps you should do a few Google searches on Desktop.ini or copy the entire error.

Should you decide continue, copy the information (Without the quote label) and paste it into a Notepad file. Press Save as and type Desktop.ini in the 'Save as' bar.

Raptor is there anyway i can change the path abit that the file is save to, its just i have tried to follow this path and after documents and settings i dont see anything saying Network. i just have folders that say Administrator, All users, Default user, and fly folder what i named my computer. at the momment when i try to install the card it asks to save it to this path below, But like i say after documents and setting in windows i dont see any folder saying Network.

C:\Documents and setting\Network\services\local settings\desktop.iniWhat do you mean by

Quote
it asks to save it to this path below

What exactly are you trying to save?

Do the Radeon drivers refuse to install?when installing the radeon drivers i am given an automatic path where i want the drivers installed this is the path    (
C:\Documents and setting\Network\services\local settings\desktop.ini ) and the drivers fail to work using this path.

But when i restore my computer to how it was before i installed  the radeon this path doesnt fully exsist. i have double clicked on my computer then on the C: drive then Documents and setting but after that i dont see the Network folder. So i was asking is there another path i could use that you could suggest. Why not create another temporary folder?

What kind of drivers are you attempting to install?

You should install them under Program Files for easy reference should you ever need to access them..download and install drivers in safe mode?>info>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318023&Product=winxpOk guys thanks for all your help but i got sick of the Radeon and bought a GEFORCE FX 5900. I had no problems installing this card, i wont be buying a Radeon again.

Solve : "No video capture hardware"?

Answer»

My computer recently went through a crash where all my files were deleted and Windows XP has been reinstalled. Today, I reinstalled my webcam. It's a GE Easycam Pro. I have never before had a problem using my webcam.

After installation, I clicked on WDM CAPTURE, and an error message popped up saying, "SORRY, you have no video capture hardware." Why is this suddenly happening and how do I get the necessary hardware again?  what type of connection is your camera? USB maybe? When you re-installed windows, did you install the propar drivers for the USB from your motherboard diskett?yes, it's a USB webcam. As for what I installed, I just let the Windows XP CD do it's work, so... I don't know if it ignored the driver in question.  :-/well windows XP is your operating SYSTEM, Try browing your mobo disc for a USB folder or a drivers folder, if you pop-in the CD it should have an auto-run, and you need to install the mobo drivers onto your new OS, that's probably your problem.

Solve : PC freezes, clock stops - Solution?

Answer»

To pass on some problem solving: My Dell 4100 with Win ME, three years old, started  giving me endless Blue Screen Error codes, many the same, and freezing up. a few days AGO, the Cursor and CLOCK stopped in their tracks. (It was NOT the battery). The PC could be reset and used again for a while. Intervals to freeze were usually 50 to 80 MINUTES, plus an equivalent time after RESET.
Dell support advice: useless as usual.

Having spent my professional life solving problems, I followed my intuition:
I finally decided to swap out the HDD, an original DELL Seagate 20 GB HDD. I first managed to copy the current C: to another HDD. (I have my backup in a Mobile DOCKING setup).
After swapping the drives, the new WD-400 HDD worked fine, Feezes stopped, Blue Screen Errors stopped.
The Seagate was nearing total failure and must have started stuttering.

NOTE: A month before, while starting to get many Blue Screen Errors, many RECOVERABLE, I bought Microsof PAID support (first time in 20 Years on PCs).
MS Support was unable to tell  me the meaning of the error codes or what they pointed to. Since that was my spec in posing the question, they refunded my $35 .
MS support said that they did not have the tools to tell me what I wanted. It required a Microsoft Development engineer to do that.
QUESTION: why does Microsft bother to put up those
error codes?
Because long numbers and words baffle people.
