Solve : New Hardware Prob?

Answer»

I recently SET up a new computer, but I can't get my Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card to work right. In the driver window it says this:

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to DISABLE one of the other devices on this system.

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

What does this MEAN and how do I fix it?First, which OPERATING system do you have? Second, is this for wireless internet? And third, have you checked to be sure that these drivers are compatible with your system?

[glb]Flame[/glb]It is Windows XP Pro, it's not for wireless internet, just a USB 2.0 PCI card, and it's the drivers that CAME with the card so i guess they are compatible, not sure how to check.it should say on the package or in the documentation that came with the product, if its compatible with your operating system..Do you have at least service pack 1? Pre-SP1 has been known to have USB 2.0 issues. o.o

Solve : No emergency boot disk!!?

Answer»

We just were given an older Hewlett Packard (1998) computer. The previous owner had it "CLEANED out" and had things added.  I enjoy it and have put alot of my WORK in it, and now it won't turn on.  It goes to the Windows Millenium ME screen and then to the screen where it asks if I want setup, and if I don't it goes to a black screen and asks to load emergency boot disk and type in some code WORDS.  I never received a disk of this kind with it, and am afraid of loosing everything.  I have Microsoft works and a couple other programs on it, and use the internet with it, is there another way to get it to boot itself?  Or am I in a world of hurt?  Thanks RebaEh... you didn't describe your problem very specifically, I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about. o.o But even if you're unable to get your computer to boot, all's not lost. ^^ You can easily remove the hard drive from the computer and put it into another computer as a slave drive, and copy all the information you might need. After you're sure you've gotten all you need, if you want to make the computer useable again, just get a windows disk (I'd suggest using Windows XP, Windows Millenium Edition was a total piece of crap...) and re-format the hard drive with a new installation of Windows. If you've got any more questions, feel free to ask here or by emailing me. ^^ You can also reach me on AIM at T3h L337 Sesshy. Hope I've helped. if u can get tonother computer, such as one of your friends, copy your three main boot files....to see them though u need to go to your folder options, and click the view tab....from there unlok hidden files, hidden file EXTENSIONS, and protected system files....then go to the C:\ and copy these three files to a floppy disk...

1.boot.ini
2.ntldr
3.ntdetect.com

then boot your computer from the floppy and it should boot windows..... if it DONT then your problem is deeper then that...but try that first...and if it does bootyou into windows see if any of the three files i listed are corrupt or missing....compare them to the one on the floppy...especially your boot.ini file....make sure it is written right....but if anything, those three files should boot you into Windows so u can fix whatever other problems you may have ...

Solve : Using a program with 2 or more computers?

Answer»

I have an office software program I designed that handles appointments, ledgers, etc. at a front desk computer and allows me to write NOTES on my laptop and then later transfer these notes via a floppy disk to the desktop unit. I am considering some options for change but no next to nothing about networks. I may try to set up three desktop computers (one in each room) and connect them to the front desk system.

1) I do not know what cables, etc. would be needed for this, additional hardware, etc.

2) I do not know the ports that would be best to use, USB connection, parallel port connection, modem connection, etc.

Once the network was established, the simplest of my ideas would be to  have the 3-computers that only take notes COMMUNICATE to the front desk system by assigning the network drive for that note file to the front desk unit. Am I right?

I also had an idea for a future system, where all rooms COULD access the information stored on the front desk system but I am unclear as to the best way to accomplish this. I see these possibilities but I have no idea which one if any would be the most practical.

A) All 4 computers have the same software installed but all data is routed to the front desk system.

B) Only the front desk computer contains the software and data but the three other computers can access the front desk computer.

C) There is only one computer, the front desk computer, but the 3 rooms have “dummy” terminals (keyboards and monitors without a computer) to connect to and access the software.

My concerns are:

For setup A...None, this system should only require the appropriate file handling routines to lock and unlock files, which I am already aware of.

For setup B...Better than A in that only one computer needs to have the software loaded to it. Is such a setup possible? If so, my concern would be that a shell could be opened from each room computer so different users could do different tasks.

For setup C...Better than B in that only one computer is needed. I would imagine that this type of setup would require extra hardware such as a router to communicate with the front desk system. I am completely uncertain about this type of setup but I would imagine the same “shell” program would have to run in from the front desk system so each terminal could be USED as a separate independent work station.

Anybody still with me so far? This if probably simple for those in the business of setting up networks but I have to date no experience with such accomplishments.

Hoping for some good insight here,

Pete

Solve : Modums for dummies?

Answer»

Am trying to set up AOL on a friend's computer.   The message we are getting is "can't find a modum".  The laldy was told that there was an internal modum on the computer when it was given to her.    How do I tell whether she has an internal modum?      I thought I was pretty good with computers myself, but I have always bought a computer totally LOADED up and all I had to do is plug it in.   I can't help her at all.Janice Chapek......Have LOOK at the back of the tower......if it has a modem card in it ...there will be a phone jack on the back.....Even easier than that is if you have a WIRE running from the telephone jack on the wall to the the back of the computer ( and its plugged in ) THere is a modem. Probably you will have to create a new dialup account.........If your still having problems , I would phone AO *censored* and have them talk you through the SETUP.......( assuming they are the ISP)
You should also check in the device manager and be sure the modem drivers are installed .

Solve : Hardware Monitor Error HELP! It just looses power?

Answer»

I've manage to finally stay on for a little more time than last time which was 2 minutes before. Every time I do something strenuous or not strenuous on the computer, the computer just shuts off completely, lost power, and I can't click the power button because it serious has no sense of power, however my older sister found to GET it's power back that she keeps taking the plug attached to the monitor in and out, then it causes a surge to get it's power back. But it STILL resets and the process is threading, dangerous, and annoying. I found out that once the computer turns on it says THERE'S A HARDWARE MONITOR ERROR or something..... Does anyone know how I can solve this problem without resulting to GO to the costly computer people?

Thank you for your time in advance
maybe  the psu is failing?/ how old is this pc? what happens if you hold down the safe mode key?...more data needed on system...win?lynx?mac.What!What's a PSU? It's about 2 years old. What's the safe mode key?

I have a Sony Vaio W SERIES.

But I think I have a problem with the power SUPPLY, since it seems it be making a lot of weird noises sometimes and shuts down. Could it be? And do you know where I can get a power supply cable? Or do I need to take it to experts for that.

Solve : Files "disappear"?

Answer»

My computer hang and restart automatically while I was doing my work. After it restart, one of my drive (partition) has became "empty" - it only display the Recycle folder. Suspecting I lost all my files, I notice that the free space are remaining the same as before i.e. 1.78GB out of 12.40Gb, which means my files seems to be still there. I check with Norton's SYSTEM Information and found out that there are a lot of scandisk files (File0000.chk - File3197.chk) which the total size is the same as my files i.e. 10.62GB. It seems like my files has turned into those scandisk files. What had happened? Any solution to recover my files? Thanks for answering!Do you have virus protection software installed?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, Norton Antivirus 2004..chk files are created when you run a scandisk type utility and it finds BAD pointers in your FAT table (the actual name depends UPON you FILE system).  Since it cannot determine exactly where these file start or stop or what their names are it does it's best to write them out the way it believes they should be.  If you need to recover them then you have to open them one by one, determine what type of file they are, or think they are, rename them appropriately including extensions.

SOMETIMES these are caused by bad sectors on the hard drive, sometimes by something deleting your File Allocation Table, sometimes by a power fluctuation, sometimes by a hard drive going bad, sometimes by a drive controller going bad.........................

Good Luck,

GaryGussery, thanks for your info.
But how am I gonna rename them? I couldn't even see the files in windows. I can only see them in Norton's System Information, and I cannot do anything i.e. cannot edit the files when the application displaying files on the drive...

Solve : We recntly bought a HP PavillionProcessor speed?

Answer»

We recently bought a HP Pavillion a810n that was advertised as having a Athlon 3300+ 2.4 GHZ processor. When I checked the system info it is listed at 1.81 GHZ. I called HP and their answer is that the processor will idle at LOWER speeds when not REQUIRED but would auto speed up if needed ( reasonable answer). What concerns me is that no other computer I've had listed anything but TOP speed. The General Info TAB is not an active screen so there is no real time updating:  Question: Do I have a 1.81 GHZ processor or a 2.4GHZ processor as advertised.   thanksWhere did you see that your processor speed was 1.81 GHZ?

Solve : Stuck at "Verifying DMI Pool Data"?

Answer»

The Specs: (i'm no good at determining specs, so bare with me here)
     AMD Athlon XP
     512MB DDR
     ASUS A7N8X Motherboard... thing. (FSB)
Xtasy 9600 XT 256MB 8X AGP Graphics CARD
     Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Soundcard
A big blue case with a transparent view on the side >_>
     Tower112 Heatsink
     Windows XP Pro

The Dealio:
so i finally got all my new computer parts. this is the first time ive ever put together a PC. i ran into ALOT of little bumps n stuff while putting it all together. for example, my computer would shut itself down after about 5 seconds of me turning it on. i had to turn the Tower SIDEWAYS for it to operate without shutting off. meaning i had to tighten the Heatsink (right?). problem solved. then i needed to figure out why i couldnt see anything on my monitor. i dont know exactly how i solved that problem, but forget it... problem solved. at ONE POINT i Finally got to install Windows XP Pro.
while installing some software i needed to restart... that was the last time i ever got to see my prescious desktop of my new computer . for i have run into an error message freezing at "Verifying DMI Pool Data......". the websites explaining how to solve this problem are kind of VAGUE... i have never used CMOS before, i am used to DOS. ive gone through that CMOS menu over & over & over & over trying to change settings and see if any of the changes would help, with no prevail. i also unplugged some things to see if that would do something. i was wrong again.
when i got my parts i figured that i would not need a Floppy drive, so i dont have one. i dont know if thats the problem or not. if it is, let me know. but i suppose my best choice is to try to reformat my HDD. its not like i have anything important on it anyway. i just got it. i want to know how to do this using this weird "CMOS" thing. other websites only tell me how to do so in DOS, which i cant get to. any help is EMENSELY appreciated. and if there's ANYTHING i've forgotten to do or something, please let me know.
     THANKS alot!

The Other Weird Stuff:
The only LED on the front of my case that ive notice will light up is the battery LED above the reset button. its always red. i guess that's normal? the other one never lights up! i've MESSED with the LED Plugs for hours but i just gave up.
The little speaker attatched to the bottom of my case had two little cwords.. black and red. well i found the red one broke. probably something i did while shuffling that *censored* motherboard around so much . soes this matter very much?
I got a Serial ATA HDD by mistake and it diddnt come with an installation disc or anything. the BIOS screen dosent seem to pick it up. will it be picked up in Winsdows XP? or do i have to look for softwarwe ONLINE?
There are several little plugs and things (it'd be better if i took screenshots) that i werent sure what they were for. i'll get back to you with shots if i could ever find my *censored* Digital Camera!! >_<

and sorry if i got carried away with details... i'm really desperate

thanks guys.nippies?.... right. okay thanks alot *censored* dude....

GREAT. ..

ok guys i think i got carried away last time. so in a nutshell, i need to know how to reformat the Hard drive of a new PC. i get to that "Verifying DMI Pool Data......." message before i get to type in any dos prompts (or whatever). any way around this? ever? i dont want another coffee table! >_<

thanks...

Solve : CD-Rom Error, Paging Operation?

Answer»

Hello, I just bought a new computer and after installing several programs and games with the CD-Rom drive, it suddenly stopped allowing me to install.  Example, when I pop a CD in to install a game,  it starts up and the screen comes up with the button to install. When I CLICK it,  the Installshield starts and the setup bar GETS to 100%, then freezes for about 2 minutes. Then, it exits out back to desktop.  I checked Administrative tools>Event Viewer>System and saw this:

Event ID 51.  "An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom1 during a paging operation."

This occurs on both the CD-Rom drive and the DVD drive, so I'm assuming something was installed incorrectly.  I looked this up and read that it might be happening if my hard drive and CD drives are on the same controller/cable, but I'm not sure if that's the reason.  How do I check to see if this is the cause, and if that's what it is, how do I move the CD-Rom drive to another controller? If this is a new computer, then send it to the manufacturer, and have the part(s) replaced for no charge...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks, but I'd like to look at other solutions beforehand.

How would I check to see what controller the devices are on, and if I find that they are on the same controller, change to a different one?sb2440........If you have a cd drive and a DVD drive as well as a hard drive ....I wouldnt think they would be on the same IDE cable ....because .......there is only 2 plugs PER IDE cable ......( actually theres 3 ...but it goes into the MOBO?
Also...if you go into the bios .........you will probably see the hard drive identified as the primary master ......and the one of the media drives identified as the secondary master and the other one refered to as the secondary slave .

If your pc is new , I would assume your O/S is XP either home or Pro ....Have you gone to the M/S update site and D/L all available updates ?

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Do both of you media drives play a cd ok ?
And does the DVD player play a DVD ?

Some thing else you could try is to uninstall both of those drives ..........Shut down the pc ......open the case and carefully remove the IDE cables from the back of the 2 media drives ( disk player) and the 4 pin power plug ........reboot the pc .........once its booted up ....shut it down again ........now plug the IDE cables and the power cables back in ........Now restart the PC ......you should see a message box appear in the lower right corner to say that new hardware has been detected then it will either find a driver from the o/s or PROMPT you to place the installation disk for the cd drives in the cd player ......they will load and you should see the mnessage the new hardware has been successfully installed.....  If that fails to do the trick ....take the pc back to were you bought it and have them fix it ......

let us know how you make out .

Also...if you go into the bios .........you will probably see the hard drive identified as the primary master ......and the one of the media drives identified as the secondary master and the other one refered to as the secondary slave .

I checked, and it says the DVD drive is on "IDE Channel 1 Master", with the CD-Rom drive on "IDE Channel 2 Slave".  Further down, it says the hard drive is on "IDE Channel 4 Master".

Quote
Do both of you media drives play a cd ok ?
And does the DVD player play a DVD ?

They both play CDs/DVDs, and I even tried installing other programs and games, and they worked.  I've basically isolated it down to one game, called Thief 2.  It refuses to run, past the setup screen.  I've gone to the game site and troubleshooted the setup, and I've wiped the CD, nothing changes.  I get the same error time and time again, even with both CD drives.  My hard drive is located on I: instead of C: for some reason, so maybe the game is trying to install to the C drive and exits out because it can't.  Unfortunately, it doesn't get far enough into the setup to ask me where to install, so I don't know for sure if that's the problem.
Okay, I seemed to solve the problem.  I booted into safe mode and the game installed successfully, with no errors.  I'm not sure why I got the CD-Rom errors in normal mode.

Thanks for your help.

Solve : bumping desk makes laptop "come alive"?

Answer»

My laptop sits on my desk.  It's screen is set to "sleep" after 15min of no use.  However, when I open and shut a drawer, I believe unintentional "bumping" the mouse causes it to "come alive".  Is there a simple key toggle shortcut than will disable/enable the mouse?  Or does anyone make a mouse with a toggle switch that DISABLES it?  I don't want to set mouse speed and accel so slow that it is hard to use.  I have TRIED setting the mouse UPSIDE down, off the desk, etc with limited success.  Disconnecting the ps2 connector WORKS, but too much work.  I use win98se.ok.... External ball-type PS2 LogiTech mouse.  Seems like it would be easy to build-in a microswitch underneath that would open up when you took your hand off of the mouse.  BTW, the "eraser" type built-in mouse on the IBM Thinkpad laptop is even more sensitive to "bumps".Well... Here is my resolution/explanation.... When you shut your cabinet doors on the desk, etc., the mouse is moving becuase the desk is.... Does your desk "WOBBLE" a little when you shut the doors? Your mouse is probably just being moved becuase the desk is shifting...

Solve : PC headache?

Answer»

I replaced the hard drive on my computer and I attempted to install Windows XP home version.

When I placed the XP CD in the drive it prompted me to reformat the hard drive which I did, after the formatting was completed the Windows set-up screen apeared and it started creating set-up files.

The system rebooted itself once this was complete, once the computer reboots it shows my drives on the system and freezes up on the main screen showing my primary master as the hard drive and the the CD as the slave and no secondary's and the cursor does not move from there and that is all she wrote.

Can ANYONE help please?

BobHow much RAM do you have, and what is your hard DISK space?

[glb]Flame[/glb] Tundra....So The new hard drive is listed as the primary master ....thats ok .......but why is the cd -rom not shown as the secondary master ? Did you change the IDE cables ?
Perhaps tell us exactly how many hard drives you have and how many cd drives you have .

I would PROBABLY set it up as ........
Hard drive ( new ) primary master  and if you have a second hard drive .......it would be primary slave .
These would both be on the same primary IDE cable

cd-rom ...would be secondary master .......and
any other dvd or cd drive as secondary slave .
These would be on the secondary IDE cable .

let us know

dl65  dl65,

I have the CD plugged into the IDE cable on the slave
part of the cable and of course the master on the HD.

The HD is a WD 80G and I am running 128MB memory.

Maybe I can change the setting in BIOS to show the CD as the secondary master??

I got the PROBLEM solved.........my COMPUTERS heart is now beating again!!

I had to manually set the cylinders and heads in BIOS for the HD for it to work with my BIOS version.

Everything booted up and I reinstalled the HD software, reformatted and installed my XP

Thank you for all of your help.

Solve : Old bios definitions for CD?

Answer»

I am helping a friend with an old Micron computer.  It has a Micronics M54HI MOTHERBOARD with a TEAC 56E cdrom.   The system would not boot from a floppy, so I went to bios setup.  Someone had put a PASSWORD on the bios setup program, so I jumpered it to reset.  Big mistake.  This board is so old, it does not recognize the cdrom.  So, I NEED to  define the CDROM  as a User hard disk.  I have been "googling" for HOURS and have been unable to find the GEOMETRY of a CDROM.  Does anyone have a suggestion?

And, all I really wanted to do was fix TCPIP on win98.

Solve : Single Channel sound?

Answer»

Howdy Folks!

I've TRIED searching various forums and google to address this problem, but much to no avail.  I have a subwoofer and 4 speaker setup, hooked up to my sound card, and just recently it stopped playing the left channel audio.  Only some parts of some songs play, and when I'm playing PC GAMES like HALF Life 2, the dialogue fades out to silent whenever I'm "talking" to somebody, so I'm guessing the signal isn't going through.

Is this a hardware problem?  All of my speakers are connected CORRECTLY, and it was working fine before.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
DannyDanny... Have you made any new additions as far as software/hardware to your computer directly BEFORE this issue "came-up"?

[glb]Flame[/glb]yes indeed, QUITE the overhaul actually.  Installed a new hard drive as well as a RAID controller card.  What can I do to fix it?  I appreciate your reply

Thanks,

Solve : E, N & M Keys Causing Grief?

Answer»

???My 12 year old has contacted me at work frustrated with a system we have at home running Windows 98.  The E, N, & M keys seem to have taken on a life of their own and are not being recognized properly.  They seem to open up other windows on their own.

Any quick and easy answers that I might be able to give her to solve her problem?  We've tried REBOOTING to no avail.  The system was working fine last week which is the last time she used this particular system.
Is she holding down the CRTL key accidently? Also, what KIND of windows are these that are just "poping-up"?

[glb]Flame[/glb]No, she's not holding down the control key - and she hasn't SPILT anything on the keyboard.  When she hits the E for example the Exploring my computer pops up.  When she hits R the Run dialogue pops up.

Could the Control key be sticking maybe?Possibly, but unlikely... Do you have antivirus SOFTWARE? Also, have you installed any new hardware/software lately? Does this happen if you plug in a NEW keyboard?

[glb]Flame[/glb]This is an older system we don't use very often and it doesn't have antivirus software on it.   There hasn't been any software/hardware installed.  I don't have another keyboard to plug in to try.

Sorry I can't give you more information.Well.... I THINK that you MIGHT have a virus.... Who knows? It might be just a key on the keyboard sticking! I can't tell, but becuase you do not have antivirus software installed, that seems to be a logical diagnosis...

[glb]Flame[/glb]

Yeah!  The problem has been solved.  It was indeed a stuck key - the WINDOWS Key on the keyboard.

Lo and behold it now works.

Thanks for your help!Anytime! Come back and see us if you have any more questions!

Solve : Image transitions too shaky?

Hello
Can anyone help me with a problem that I'm having with my PC. I've a fairly good IDEA on computers but I'm a newbie in hardware related issues. I've seen a LOT of video cards out there and I'm trying to see if I need one.

I GOT a PC from DELL with Intel Celeron processor 2.4 GHz 512 MB RAM and 80 GB drive. I've XP pro running on it. My problem is that the picture is shakey
This is more evident when I'm browsing the web and IE blocks a popup, the title bar which slides down EASILY on my laptop is not sliding down smoothly in my PC
This is not stopping me from working but should I get a new video card

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
First, did this computer have these problems as SOON as you received it via postage mail? If so, then send it back to Dell, and have them fix it for NO cost...

Solve : NEC Superscript 1400 Laser Printer Problem?

Whenever I send something to the printer, it resizes it to a smaller size.  I ahve CHECKED everything I know to check, all options are set to letter size, no scaling, etc.  All of the current settings on this printer are the same as the previous printer I had on my computer and everything was OK.  When I say it resizes the print job, it SEEMS to only want to use about 3/4 of the page, and SHRINKS up the document to fit.  Any suggestions WOULD be appreciated.  All drivers current, tried both a printer cable and a USB cable.

Solve : Pacific Digital DVD Writer?

Answer»

I've just purchased and installed a Pacific DIGITAL DVD Writer and it runs well however, I have a Yamaha CD re-writer that I use as a cd-rom to play GAMES. I do not want to use the DVD writer for all functions available because I feel that it will shorten it's life. The problem is that when I put a game DISC in my Yamaha and click the icon to play, a blank white screen comes up without showing the disc's contents. The Yamaha does show up in Device manager but I can't seem to get the drive to function. My guess would be that the Pacific Digital has chosen itself as the propriatory drive. I contacted Pacific Digital support but received no answer (Not Suprised) Thanks in advance.Have you tried updating your DRIVERS? Also, which operating system are you using?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Same exact thing happened to me, had to unplug computer and reboot.  Matter of fact, have to do it everytime I use the burner.  I tried PD an Iomega DVD burners.  Had problems with both.  I finally returned them both and bought a Sony DVD burner (external) it works great!

Solve : Mouse dead??

Answer»

Sorry if this posted somewhere else, HARD to search, given that my mouse STOPPED working.

I doubt that it is the mouse that has the problem though.  Motherboard?, something else?

It suddendly STARTED to slow down and be non-responsive, as if it were a cordless mouse and the batteries just died.  Only it's not cordless.

After it died, I tried rebooting, only the computer didn't want to reboot.  I tried again in safemode, and ended up having to reboot from there.  Now everything else works FINE, but I never have had problems with rebooting my computer before.

Mouse is just a 3-button MICROSOFT mouse.

Solve : Need Serious Help!!! Mobo Acting Strange?

Answer»

alright, the other day my pc was working fine with no problems at all. then i left my dorm for a couple hours and i left my pc on as usual. when i came back it was off. so i tried turning it back on, but when i did, it came on but my monitor was saying that the monitor is working but check the cables or something. i checked everything but it still wasnt working. so i checked my video card. still not workin. so i added an old pci card that doesnt really work but it at least lets me see my screen when it boots up. i then checked the bios and everything to see if anything was different. no change. then while it was on the bios i SWITCHED and made the agp card the default. i then switch my monitor to the apg card and restarted and it worked. so i pc was running and i was still trying to figure out why it cut off by itself. i did virus check, adaware, and windows update and when i had to restart i did and when it turned off it didnt come back on. i went to press the power button and it turned on for about a sec and it went back off. i opened the case and it seemed pretty hot so i let it cool off for awile to see if it comes back on later. i tried later and it came on. i checked the bios and the temp and the motherboard was around 90 something *F and the cpu was 120 to 130*F i dont really know the norm but the cpu doesnt seem normal. i have to fans in. one blowing out the side and one blowing out the back. so i turned it off and unpluged it and had one of my other fans blowin on the inside overnight. so this morning i went to see if it worked and it turned on it seemed fine but then when i got to the desktop it started to make this weird buzzing type sound from the motherboard. i restarted it and the same thing, it didnt com back on. i just wanted to know if i could get some help cuz i dont want to make anything worse. Quote

... i checked the bios and the temp and the motherboard was around 90 something *F and the cpu was 120 to 130*F ...started to make this weird buzzing type sound from the motherboard...

CPU is too hot.  Buzzing noise could be CPU fan.  It could be clogged with dust.  Don't use computer until you fix this or you'll burn it out.
so should i get a new cpu fan...? or just try to clean it out...? what if its already burned out, would i have to get a new cpu...? i appreciate your helpHow much dust was in the fan?  Can you turn the fan blades by hand?  If the CPU fan is full of dust, you can try cleaning it.  It might still work.  Fan is 12VDC, you can test it with a car battery.  Or just buy a new one for about $10.  CPU is probably still okay, since computer turns on when it cools.  Most motherboards shutdown if CPU fan SLOWS down too much or stops.  BIOS might have SETTINGS for this.

What type of CPU?  Pentium IV, Pentium III, Athlon or...?
What is make and model of computer or motherboard.

If you get things working, use this Windows real-time monitoring tool.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download283.html

You can also monitor temp of hard drives (if they have embedded temp sensor).  Use this tool to see if it has sensor.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4130.html

If it does, use this tool to monitor:
http://www.rsdsoft.com/hdd-thermometer/index.phpalright, i clean everything out. it wasnt much dust. just a liitle in the cpu fan. i waited for a while then i turn it on. i went into the bios and looked and the health monitoring system.  when i first looked it said CPU temp= 40*C/104*F and M/B temp= 28*C/82*F. after no less than a minute the CPU went from that to 52*C/125*F. i didnt know if that was normal so i turned it off. is that normal for it to increase to that in that amount of time...? The CPU model is Intel CELERON 2.20 Ghz and i forgot to look at the mobo modelIt's hard to say.  Depends where they actually place the temp sensors.  CPU temp might be okay.  Yes, it rises fast, that's why fan is so important.  Did BIOS also show fan speed?  Could be anywhere from 3000-5000 rpm.

See this chart about temps:
http://www.heatsink-guide.com/content.php?content=maxtemp.shtml
NOTE:  Celeron max temperatures are the maximum temperatures reported by the thermal junction inside the CPU, unless otherwise specified.ok, i finally got everything running and it didnt power off byitself and it didnt have very high temps. but after awhile my monitor started to act stupid. the screen went blank and a blue box came up and said the monitor is working but check video and cables. i did. but then as i turn on my pc and monitor the monitor screen displayed the same thing but it was very distorted. i then unpluged the monitor from the pc. it was still distorted and wasnt working. so i had an old pci card(dont know if it works or not but it at least lets me see the bios screen when i boot up) i put it in and tried to see if the monitor worked with that card. it did the same thing.(btw, i had to shut down the pc improperly since i couldnt see anything on the screen everytime) So i just figured the monitor wasnt working anymore. so i was just trying to figure out what i was going to do. i remembered that the new video card i had in, had a s video thing where i could hook my tv up to my pc. i tried that and it worked. my pc booted but it was saying windows was shut down wrong choose how i want to start windows.(i put last known good configuration). now, it seemed to start windows(showed the logo) but then it restarted, it went back to the logo again and restarted again. finally it said windows was shut down wrong again, i chose start normally, it did the same thing, then i chose start in safe mode, it then booted, it worked. so i went to system restore. i did a restore to a coulple days ago. it restarted it wouldnt start windows normally(did same as before). i went to safe mode. it said it system restore incomplete. i tried different dates, same thing happened. i kept trying, i got the blue screen a couple times. so i figured i would just install windows on an extra hard drive i had in my pc. while in safe mode i transfered the files off my extra hard drive to the master and it went fine. i then shut down my pc and went to bed. i wake up this morning and go to class and then i get back to install windows on the hard drive but i turn on my pc and i get a black screen on my tv, the keyboard lights doesnt come on, and i get no beep from my pc. but everything in the pc is powered up and running. i checked everything to make SURE it was connected but still the same thing. i could really use some help now. i dont know what to do

Solve : Not executing startup disk?

Answer»

Was given an older ACER PC for grandsons.  Was told it was reformatted to remove drive contents (but know little else and can't contact givers).

Problem:
-Not executing startup disk
-Only screen at startup is ACER bios v2.0, good memory check (48Kb Memory, 64KB SMRAM), then flashing cursor; no prompt

Here are specifics:
-ACER Aspire 2239 (91.AA772.GT7)
-Drive was formatted to remove drive contents.
-Do not have restoration software for system
-Am trying to INSTALL Windows 98SE but will not execute startup disk (Do not know what OS was on system before, but going w/ Win98 because of RAM/disk size and have original CD)
-Entered BIOS w/ CTRL/Alt/ESC and drives, boot order fine (even has correct date/time)
-jumper on Western Digital WD64AA is showing 'master' but is only fixed drive in system
-if change WD64AA jumper, get an 'invalid drive' error
-Doesn't appear that POST is completing (only screen at startup is ACER bios v2.0, good memory check, then flashing cursor; no prompt)
-a: lights up, but doesn't execute startup disk
-Have tried several startup disks
Just an update......

Left running and eventually a 'Serial port conflict, equipment config' error displayed.  Changed serial port settings, and now will eventually go through POST and display config menu at top of screen with an 'illegal system disk, replace disk and press any key' error.

(TAKES maybe 30 minutes from power on to do this.  Sits with same screen as before and flashing cursor during the wait)

The a: lights every so often and the 'illegal system disk' error redisplays.

Possible the disk is needing to be partitioned, waiting for disk files?  Or could the a: be bad even if light comes on?Removing unnecessary card,  made no difference.

I removed the 'master' jumper on the hard drive.  Now the system goes right
through POST on power up, but still comes up w/  'invalid system disk,
replace disk and press any key' error (when boot order is A, then C) or
'insert system disk and press enter to reboot' (when boot order is only A).
I tried using just a system disk w/ fdisk, format and sys rather than the
startup disk but still didn't execute.  I've tried swapping the floppy drive
w/ another  -- didn't help.
Hello how are you? First of all goto system BIOS setup and restore factory default settings. Then change the booting sequence to 1. CD rom 2. Hard Disk 3.Floppy.
Now turn your computer off and change the hard disk jumper settings to factory defaults. Now turn your PC ON and insert windows 98 bootable CD into the CD Drive and it will boot....

HOPE this will solve your problem. Take care of you and others and be happy.
Bye...
Dur-E-WahabWhen I changed floppy drive and cable from another computer, the POST went right thru and startup disk initiated from floppy.  Problem now is that CD is not WORKING.  Generic drivers loaded w/ startup and CD was recognized/configured as E:.  The CD drive runs off a Sound Blaster 16 sound card.  I've read that should load manufacturer drivers if CD doesn't work.  Have downloaded sbw9xup.exe (SB16 update drivers).  How do I get them to load at startup w/ startup disk?

*Also, not showing an option for booting from CD in BIOS, just A:, C: or combination of both.CD's were something new, no IDE interface on motherboard.  No such thing as bootable CD, so no option in BIOS.  CD connected to sound card because that's where the audio was.  CD's were for audio.

I'm guessing the computer is a Pentium 60.  I was given one like that and after HD was formatted, I couldn't get Win95 to install, even with a Win95 boot floppy.  It refused to see the CD for the INSTALLATION.  If you temporarily install a standard IDE CD to the motherboard, you might get Windows to install.

Solve : Power supply to be changed to constanly on?

Answer»

I want to change my power supply so that once it is plugged in it will supply the voltages. I am not too sure how to trace this down. I've GOT one arm behind my back and my power supply unit is split open and ready for disection. If I need to insert a momentary switch this would be fine.

Any thoughts?David Tebera....I really dont uderstand what your ASKING ...a power supply does supply the various voltages required ......or am I missing SOMETHING ?

"If I need to insert a momentary switch this would be fine."  why would you wish to do this ...please explain ?

"I am not too sure how to trace this down." What are you trying to trace down?

A power supply should provide 3.3V + , 5 V + /- , 12v +/-

Let us know

dl65  Ok.
Don't laugh.

I have a lot of spare parts (motors and such) lying around and was going to play with designing my own "Robot Wars" robot, (really just RC).
I wanted to use the power supply (PS) to run the machine until I get batteries to do the job. In other words I want to use the PS as a transformer to provide me the 12 volts while the creation is on the workbench.

I ASKED about a momentary switch as I am unsure what happens when you turn on a computer. I thought the battery sent a small current to the PS which kicked it on. I did not think it to be a constant supply to the PS.

Stupid I know.

(Thank you for asking dl65.)ATX power supplies are ALWAYS on when plugged in.   Pulling one line to ground turns it from standby to full on.  I think it's pin 8 (gray) on the 20-pin motherboard connector.  Connect it to pin 7 (ground).  It also needs a load to turn on.  Slightly older power supplies, with the 2-6 pin connectors are fully on when the main power switch is on.

Computer battery has nothing to do with turning power supply on.  It works very much like your TV.  If it wasn't in standby, the remote wouldn't be able to turn it on.

Solve : laptop power supply?

Answer»

Hey all,I've got an hp xt395 LAPTOP that has a problem with the power pin.Where the a/c power cord goes into the unit, that little pin is loose and gives me an intermittant loss of a/c power, thus causing the battery to not charge. My question is,can that be fixed or does the mobo need replaced? If it can be fixed, how in the world does that case come apart? Thanks for any help!wrwss.......Well , my immediate thought is ...is this mchine still under warantee .....and have you asked HP about it ?
LOL ....oh yes , if you arent experienced in servicing  laptops don't even think about opening it up ...your just asking for trouble.

let us know

dl65  No , the thing is 3 months out of warranty! So,do you know what I'm TALKING about? I know I've seen this condition posted on here before but I'm unable to find it.Is that as hard to take apart as it looks? And am I right,is that piece of the mobo?Anyways, the thing is useless without being able to charge the battery so I was wondering how bad can it be to take apart? We know exactly what you're talking about.  If you think it's easy to take apart, then do it.  If you screw it up, don't BLAME us.

Or take it to a service shop and pay.  I'm guessing about $100-200.  It's all labor, the part is about $2.what is the part, the pin?Of course I wouldnt blame you guys, all of you guys rule, thats why I'm here,to learn and try to help.Do any of you guys know where to find on-line manuals for laptop disassembly?I cannot find any.1st you will need a service manual, you'll never get it apart without one.

HP doesn't have manuals "on-line".  Another reason to buy a Dell.

The power plug is not the pin, it's the entire receptacle.  You need the right size and there are HUNDREDS of different sizes.  It looks like this:

If it's attached to motherboard, new mobo is either $400 or $700.  If the computer will be trash, anyway, start taking it apart.  Take photos so you'll remember how to put it back together.  This will be a big project and will take many hours of work.  It's not impossible, if you have the patience of a watchmaker and the precision of a diamond cutter.  Everything is really small.  If you can unsolder the connector, you can find one somewhere.Thank you computer_commando!!! Much appreciated

Is this a wireless monitor?

[glb]Flame[/glb]not wireless, standard 17" flat screen crt with standard cable connection to CPU and a separate power CORD.  I don't think it's the monitor because ANOTHER unit hooked up did the same thing. ok... What model/manufacturer of video card do you have?

Solve : both CD-ROM and CDRW cannot read discs?

Both my cd and cdr DRIVES aren't detecting the many different cd's i've tried. They are displayed in My Computer. Have tried going to control panel > system > device manager, but it says both my devices are WORKING properly. Data cables are not faulty. I can even eject USING the eject button in My computer but it just can't read discs that are entered. have even tried reinstalling drivers but the same problem occured. please help.
Hello friend, how are you? Goto UR BIOS setup and CHANGE the booting sequence to CD ROM ,floppy then HARD DISK. Also make a windows 98 bootable floppy. After changing the booting sequence, save changes to BIOS and insert bootable floppy and also insert the windows98 bootable CD into the master CD Drive and restart your system.
When system is booting from floppy, it will ask you "Start computer with CD ROM support". So select this option with thw help of arrow keys. Then press enter. Afetr a successfull startup of ur system, it will show the CD DRIVE letter at last. Note that letter and type "x:" and press enter.
Where x represent that drive letter in which you have inserted windows98 CD.
If it works then it means that problem is not with CD DRIVES but with windows.
So reinstall windows in that case.
Hoe this will solve your problem.
Take care of you and others and be happy.

Solve : Can't Read or Format CD's?

Answer»

I am trying to transfer files from old PC (Win98SE) to new one (WinXP).

My Old PC had two programs:

B's Clip packet writing S/W, and

B's Recorder Gold. Which somehow wrote without B's Clip.

When I try to create a RW/CD with B's Clip, and move the data to the new computer, it won't read it. I tried installing B's Clip, and it still wouldn't.

When I try to erase data from the supposedly RW CD's, to maybe use them again, even those created with B's Recorder, the files are read only and can't be erased by any move I know of.

I've decided to just waste some CD-ROM discs to get the data MOVED, but don't believe this will work, either. But spending an entire day at it is getting old.
Have these CDs been used before? It sounds that way, becuase there were already read only files on them, right?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hello friend, how are you? First of all, try to change the SOFTWARE you are using to write CD R or CD RW. I suggest you to use NERO Express.
This software has an option "Allow the files to be added later or Multisession disk". If you check this option, it will also you to rewite ur CD RW OTHERWISE it simply lock the disk.
Secondly I didn't understand when ur drive not read the disk: At the time of writing or at the time of Reading.
If you want to copy the files that you have just burrned by ur CD BURNER and ur CD Drive wont read it then it may be possible that you burn the CD at the speed which is not compatable with your CD Drive (not CD RW Drive). So try to burn the CD at compatable speed.

Hope this will solve your problem.
Take care of you and others and be happy.

Solve : Networking Question...?

Answer»

Hey everyone! I ahev a question... Let me start with the full story here.... I will be buying a laptop, which will have an internal 802.11g,b networking card... Now, I want there to be internet access, and a network to be setup between the new laptop, and my desktop... I know how to connect all of the cables between the modem -> router, etc. , but my question is here.... My desktop did not comewith a Ethernet port... I was told to buy a USB Network adapter (ethernet to USB adapter) . Will my networking attempt work?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame....Do you have a open PCI slot on the desk top ....if so just get a pci ethernet card ......I have a real dislike for USB adapters .......LOL I would probably do something like this ..........get a WIRELESS router like this ......http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=485092&CatId=373  ......
Then put a pci ethernet card in the desktop ( they are cheap ) then run a cat 45 cable from the output of your Hispd modem to the WAN ( input on the router) then from one of the Lan outputs ....run a cat45 cable to the desktop .....and you have a wireless card in the laptop .....configure the router and your done .......

dl65  Both of your ways will work but the usb adapter setup obviously has less wiring, which is a plus.Nice idea dl65, but I don't have an open PCI slot... However, the networking SHOULD work with the USB adapter, right?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame......Absolutely ......

dl65 Thanks!

[glb]Flame[/glb]This should work:  http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=30&prid=126
I see... What about this one Computer COMMANDO? http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50347355&pfp=SEARCH ?

[glb]Flame[/glb]See if you have clearance to the side of the USB port.  That unit looks a little wide and might interfere with your keyboard or mouse plug.

The Linksys is nice because you can place it where you can see the lights and it will fit any computer.  Of course, you need a USB cable.  I've GOT one, given to me, never used it or needed it...yet.

I don't like using USB for networking, it was never designed for that, so it's a compromise.  You have no PCI slots?

USB1.1 is equivalent to 10BaseT.  If you do a lot of computer to computer access on your home network, don't expect blazing speed of 100BaseT.  For internet access via DSL or cable, 10Mbps is more than enough.I see.... My desktop still has two USB ports open, so I think that it will fit.... Also, for my router, it will be a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router (802.11g,b) Another thing that I have changed is the internal wireless card that will be inside my laptop... It will be a B,G compatible card as well... (I hope to use G)

Solve : Slow distorted sound realtek AC"97 HELP!?

Answer»

Hello, Maybe some one can help me before I go and buy a new sound card this week. I am having a problem with the sound on my computer. No matter what type of file I play or in which program I run it with the sound is very slooow and distorted. The sound worked at one time and does work very rarley for a day or so. I use windows xp sp1, REALTEK ac"97 intergrated sound, on a compaq s4020wm desktop computer. I have the latest drivers from compaq for the sound card. Any help any one can give would be great.
ThanksAnd your operating system would be...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hello, how are you? First of all check your speakers and their volume. The best way is to check your sound card with different speakers.
It the above doesn't solve your problem then you must reinstall the drivers of your sound card. Goto the device manager and remove your sound card by selecting your sound card i-e "realtek ac 97 " and then select "scan for hardware changes". When your sound card has been detected, install the drivers. Be sure not to install your latest drivers which you have got. Try to install previous drivers and then check wheather your sound card is working properly. If yes then the problem must be with your latest drivers.
If this wont solve your problem, then you must check the volume properties and settings for sound card in controle pannel that they all are okay.
The last check is that arrrange another hard disk with operating system installed on it from any friend or relative. Then remove your hard disk and connect that hard disk and install your sound card on that operating system. Then check the sound quality.

If every thing fails then.....

Hope this will solve your problem. Tqake care of you and others and be happy.
Bye...

I senn this problem before, ACTUALLY i created this problem on my comp...

here goes, if your sound card have a kareoke mode then you most probobly changed the "KEY"  option to -4, try looking somewhere in the config of the drivers, if you have soundman drivers then you sound have a bue icon in BOTTON right icon SET, double click this icon and change the "KEY" option to 0.

if you dont have soundman driver try looking for the equlizer of the driver and look for an option called "KEY"

hope i helpedFlame, My OS is Windows XP with sevice pack 1 as stated in my original message. Any help you could give is still needed. Thanks.

Durr-E-, Thanks for the information.  It's just to bad for me that I have already attempted everything you wrote before getting online for some help. This is crazy! I had my sound working one day so I created a recovery point  for that day and time.  a couple of days later my sound was slow so I used the recovery point and it was still slow. Anyway thanks for the help.

Solve : Problem with installing RAM?

Answer»

Okay, my computer is a GREAT Quality or GQ 6084, it has a 2600 Athlon processor. I've just bought a NEW piece of RAM, 256MB DDR 266. I installed, but my computer, for some reason, won't recognize it. After a while of turning my PC of and on, and removing the stick back and forth, my monitor, now won't work. When I put the memory stick in, all I see is black on my monitor, and when it is out, it works fine. Can anyone help me with this?Maybe you bought the wrong type of memory for your computer.  Read the Owner's Manual.I'm pretty sure I got it right, the dude that sold me THING even said so. Quote

What makes him an expert?
Hey, the people that are so called "experts" TOLD me that my video card would work, but did it? NO! They were just out to make some $$$$$ ! Now, consult your system manufacturer before upgrading... They will give you accurate information...

[glb]Flame[/glb]i had the same problum and this is the way i FIXED it, take one of you memory chips to the store that you are buying from and ask them to give you the same type of memory ,best of luckHello how are you? I think that your mother board doesn't support the RAM you've just baught. So try some other models and purchase one which is completely supported by your computer's main borad. Quote

Solve : 563LE LCD Monitor Help?

Answer»

Hello all. My wife has a 563LE monitor and it's got a red vertical line on the left edge of the display screen. When it was new this happened and I searched and searched and found the FIX but having reloaded her OS the problem is back. I can't find the fix for this problem. It was something obscure. You wouldn't relate it to a display issue but it fixed it. Or atleast I wouldn't have related the 2. I think it was something in accessability or some such. I really can't remember. but this red line is bugging the wife really bad so of course in a round-about way, if you know what I mean, it's bugging me. Anyone experience the same problem or know where I can find some specific help for this? LG has been no assistance what so ever. I know it's an easy fix if I could just remember what I did or where I found it....  thanks in advance for any help

DaveHave you tried downloading and installing the LATEST drivers for your video card? If not, then check on the video crad manufacturer's website for the drivers... Also, have you tried running a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com ? Windows Update usually has drivers for hardware, so it SHOULD work... Let me know how thing work out...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, all updates have been applied from MS, as well the system is running XP w/SP2. All drivers for the videocard and monitor are most current available. The monitor is fine, other than this pixel wide red vertical line extending from the top to the bottom about 1/16" from the left edge of the viewing area. When I originally installed this monitor on her pc when new, it was there. I searched the net and found a fix, after a couple hours of looking. It was a simple click or 2 and it was done. I'm thinking but could be completely wrong that it was in the accessibility settings. Of course I've been through them and the accessibility options in the control panel. Nothing has tweaked my memory and nothing that I've changed has fixed it. I do remember saying to myself, what has this got to do with video in any manner when I did what fixed it last time. It wasn't something you'd associate right off with video. But it did work. It was just turning off or on something I think. Sure wish I could find that piece of paper I WROTE it down on a couple years ago... and being a MCSE and the family 'nerd', the wife is getting more and more impatient with me. Anyway, to anyone considering the problem....all drivers are current, MS DOWNLOADS are current, all hardware is working properly, no issues what so ever with the machine (2G, 512mb RAM, 64MB video, etc) it's just that little red line getting me headed towards the dog house with the wife and it's not even my fault!!!! Thanks for any and all replies... DaveOne more thing, I just booted her pc and noticed the red line form the MOMENT the monitor powers up. No windows, no drivers, etc yet. So now I'm thingking I had to change something in the CMOS.... Since there are no drivers loaded yet and windows isn't running but yet that line is there, has to be BIOS/CMOS related.... Looked through the CMOS, didn't see anything that looked like what I might have changed..... Any ideas?
Thanks, Dave
