Solve : Windows XP Freezes?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I'm from brazil and my english is not so good, so im sorry if I writte anything wrong. I have a Genuine Intel Pentium IV, 320 RAM, Video Card GeForce2 MX/MX (AGP) 400, HD Seagate 40 GB, MotherBoard Intel D845HV. My problem is: The computer is freezing every time with no aparent reason. I'm working with the computer and it stops. It doesnt shows any error screen telling me anything, it just stops. Im running Windows XP wiht SP2 and I dont known whats going on... I already try Norton 2004 (all utilities INCLUDING Norto Antivirus) Defrag and  Scandisk, but I think thats a hardware problem. The hard Disk have some bad blocks, but I think thats not the cause of the problem, can it be ??  Anyone can help me

Thank you.Hi ricardo!

Your English is just fine.

Please answer a few questions:

1. Does this problem happen every time you use your computer?

2. What programs are you using when this happens?  Are you using Internet Explorer?  or something else?

3. Have you added any new hardware devices to the computer, such as a new hard drive or new video card?

Regards,
Doc

Hello Doc,

This problem happens every time I turn on the computer and logon the windows xp. It takes a time like 20 or 30 min aprox, and the computer freezes. I have a USB optical mouse and the ligths of the mouse are turned off too. The computer doesnt respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL, only the reset button can restart the machine. The screen freezes too. I think this a problem on the video card cause one time, I see vertical lines on the screen. I tried to chance the driver of the video card but it doesnt work. Usually I use the MSN 7.0 (BETA) and Internet Explorer. But in some games the problem occurs too. I dont added new hardwares, so I dont known whats going on... pleas help me!!

Thank You for your help !Ricardo:

Sorry about the delay.

I still need more information to know what is causing your operating system to hang (or freeze).  Please answer these questions:

1. Has this computer always done this, or has it started doing this just recently?

2. If it started to hang recently, what changed just prior to this happening?  (For example, did this happen after you installed the new drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX video card?  Did you notice this soon after you installed the beta MSN 7.0 program?)

3. Is your computer always connected to the Internet or do you have a dial-up connection?

4. Do you have a desktop computer?  Or do you have a laptop or notebook computer?

5. Do you have any files or folders encrypted?

DocDoc,

No problem about the delay.. answering your questions:
1) it start doing this just recently
2) I think the problem is not related to programs running on my computer.. I think that is a hardware problem (possible the video card) or the driver of the video card is not the correctly one.
3) The computer is connected to the net almost all the time.. not 24 hours per day.
4) Its a desktop computer
5) No encripted folders or files.

I think the problem is on something related on the video card. I´ll try some things, but I´ll continue talking with you.

Thank´s for your patience.Hi
To me looks like your video card is faulty I would take it out and see if the problem still exists, other than that I would reinstall your operating system. Have you PUT new or extra ram stick in, if so take  out the added stick and see if the problem is still there.Ricardo:

Try booting to Safe Mode & rolling back the driver.

Here is the Microsoft Knowledge Base article in Spanish:

Hey Doc,

I think the problem has been solved. I changed my video card (NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX400) wich is AGP slot by a Cirrus Logic video card, wich is PCI slot. The computer doesnt hangs anymore. I think the problem is especificaly on the AGP slot.. cause I put the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX400 into other computer and it works normaly. Anyway, THANKS for your help and everybody who tried to support me!!

Solve : A Few HDD Questions.?

Answer»

Question 1:

I partitioned a 160 GB Maxtor HDD into seperate drives. There is a part of the drive i cut a load of data to and all the other partitions were cloned from other drives. Why isit that when on searching on the part of the drive cut to the drive makes a louder LOADING sound than it did if i were to search on another part of the drive?

Question 2:

I bought a 120 GB EXTERNAL Western Digital Hard Disk Drive.
I have stupidly been unplugging the drive withoyt stopping it in windows which i heard was not a good idea. I did this after copying stuff from other drives to it so i should be ok shouldn't i?
Anyway if i'm not ok and it HAS corrupted the files on there, is there software to scan the drive and fix what it's corrupted if it has corrupted that is. Would Spinrite 6.0 sort this sort of problem out?
Would this also have corrupted the unwritten part of the drive?Re: Stopping the device. Yes, you really should stop it before yanking out the cable, ALTHOUGH as you rightly say if the drive isn't being read from or written to at the time, you're data should be safe.

Having said that, get into the habit of stopping the drive before you pull it out. There are many occasions I've looked at the lights on my USB data stick, noticed them go from fast flashing (drive activity) to slow flashing (erm, no drive activity), to then briefly being read from/written to again. Just in case, eh?

As for the rest of the questions, I'm not going to guess at that - I simply don't know enough about it.Not a problem.
Would just like to say, looking through the other posts people have written you guys do a good job of your technical support. keep it up!!

Spinrite is a bit of software i would RECOMMEND to everyone here.

It does a much better job than norton disk doctor and ontrack recovery.

It creates a boot disk and has its own OS. Does a FULL 4 hour scan on the hard drive in depth recvoering bad sectors.

Very good prog!!

Solve : Wierd Windows XP?

Answer»

Screen saver froze up. Only thing I could do was turn computer off. When I tried to turn it back on; the hdd and cd drives activate but the monitor doesn't. The fans run but the power LIGHT doesn't come on. Monitor is fine. ??This could be a video card issue... You might try this... Turn off and unplug ALL wires connecting to your computer... Now... Open the compter case on a table ABOVE a tile floor... NOT a rug floor (static electricity), and immediately ground the electricity from your body by touching the INNER netal frame of the computer... Noext, find your video card and try PUSHING in on it softly, but firmly. After, just put the case back on, and plug your wires back in, and see if it works.

[glb]Flame[/glb]I tried that to no avail. ALSO took out the battery and let it SET for all day. Same thing.

The NIGHT it messed up ; it had worked fine all day.  About 2 hrs. later the screen saver was froze and the mouse and keyboard would not bring it out so I turned the machine off. Now it won't turn back on. The hdd light comes on but not the power light???   No signal to monitor.

Solve : Need HDD Help!?

Answer»

I dont know and even the tech guys at the company i bought it at know so here it goes:
I just bought a new computer and i turned it on and everything was fine. BUT then it just turned off and when i turned it on it DIDNT get to startup.  it just said "cannot find a start up file" its corrupt or missing.  so i PUT the xp disk in and it went to the setup and went fine but when it was finishing it said that it cant find the hard drive and STOPPED installing.  this is all before the stage where you can use your mouse in the black screen with white writing stage.  so my conclusion is that the computer cannot find or doesnt recognise the hard drive.  please help me, i have tried everything i can think of.Zike:

Two things to try:

Unplug the personal computer (PC) & open up the case.  Check the cable (the one with 40- or 80-wires) connected to the hard drive to see that it has not COME loose.  Try disconnecting where it connects to the hard drive & reconnecting it again.  Then try disconnecting where it connects to the motherboard & reconnecting it again.  Make sure not to reverse the cable or bend any wires.  The red line indicates where to connect pin number one.

Next, check the Molex connector (the one coming from the power supply with red, YELLOW & black wires) to make sure it is firmly connected to the hard drive.

Then, put the cover back on the case & power up the PC.  The computer BIOS (i.e. the firmware on the motherboard) should detect the hard drive.

If you still get the error, try turning the power off, unplugging the PC, & opening up the case.  Then, unplug the Molex connector from the hard drive & plug a different Molex connector from the power supply in its place.  (Make sure not to plug it in upside down!)  Close the cover, plug in the PC & try to power up the machine again.

If that doesn't work, let us know.  We'll try resetting the BIOS to the defaults.

Doc

Solve : Computer doesnt detect GeForce5700LE?

Answer»

When I boot up my computer it displays GeForce 5700LE BIOS graphics card.

When I run the dxdiag, it shows no DISPLAY driver or device. So what do I do to get it WORKING?Is this a new video card?  If so, did you unistall the drivers for your previous card before you installed this one?  Also did you install the drivers for this card before you put it in the computer?  In a lot of cases you must install the drivers before you put in the card.I know from a previous experience, that this is a video card, and that you need to uninstall ALL frivers from the old card, before installing the drivers for the new one...

[glb]Flame[/glb]This is a brand new computer, and when I install the driver I get this error.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v420/Spoonmaster/error.bmpUuuuummm... Your link to the image did not work... TRY re-uploading the picture...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well the picture isnt working but it says in the driver installation.

The driver installation was not able to find any hardware compatitble with driver.Did you install your drivers from the CD from NVIDIA, and see that error message, or did you just plug-in your card without the drivers?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Most likely the second, because it seems that I DONT have a driver cd for this card. =\NVIDIA did not give you a CD?! Call them... They should know how to fix this, becuase it's their product... Ask them about it... They know more about the card then I. lol

Solve : Newbie here with hard drive question?

Answer»

How did I not find this forum until now-wonderful place!...I have a hard drive capacity question.  The computer is a Compaq desktop Model 5070.  It's been a workhorse for 5 years...I'll be building my own new computer next fall but will keep this one until it folds.  I do routine software and physical maintenance on it-tear it down a COUPLE of times a year to clear out dust, etc.  Never had a hardware failure.

It has the following:

AMD K6  3D processor running at 350mhz.
280MB RAM
4 GB Hard Drive...1.8 GB free space at the moment.

Windows 98SE updated through MS Update site.
IE6

What is the largest hard drive I can get away with to replace this little 4GB job?  I'd like to add a few more programs.  Make and model recommendations are welcome.  The local COMPUSA has a couple of 20 GB drives, Seagate and Maxtor Ultra IDE, but I don't know if the motherboard and processor will handle it...no one there could tell me for sure either.

The original drive is a Seagate and has worked great, I'd just like a larger drive that's compatable with more space.

Thanks in advance!I BELEIVE that you can only use a 4 or 5 gb harddrive with that SYSTEM.It is equipped with s.m.a.r.t which won't recognize a larger disc among other things Quote

I thought the same thing you did , but did an experiment this MORNING with a Western Digital 10 GB HD I borrowed from a friend who is rebuilding his son's computer...not only did my computer recognize the drive, I did a WIN98 install on it...I pulled the 10 gig drive and reconnected my old drive after verifying that my bios does recognize at least 10 GB.  The smallest IDE drive I've found locally is 20 GB...I'm hopefull I can use it.If it sees the 10GB, it will surely see the 20GB.

I was hoping that would be the case...thanks for limitation info!  I had updated BIOS on this MACHINE once previously-date is 5/99.  Compaq has another update that is a few months newer...wouldn;t you know that my floppy drive seems to be going out-can't format disks and it only reads a few files on older disks...floppy is needed to update BIOS...grrrrr......

I downloaded the BIOS update but can't get it onto a floppy when I execute the update file...I WISH I could execute it to my CD burner. Quote

Many thanks!  Here I am with my new Seagate 20 GB, the old 4 GB as slave, new floppy drive and clean reinstall of the O/S...runs smoooooooth as silk.  Almost all software reloaded and room to spare on this old relic.  After confirming everything worked, I formatted the old drive and plan on using it for data storage...I do some home recording with a Roland digital workstation, so that drive will come in handy.

..the floppy drive was toast, so that with the new hard drive and some CDr's...total was $85...nice 5 year warranty on the Seagate drive too...thing is whisper quiet.  Thanks again!!!

Solve : A better way??

Answer»

Hi guys.

Some part of my COMPUTER is broken, because when I fire it up, fans start, but SCREEN is black, and it's definately not a monitor problem. I think it overheated or something.

Anyways, is there any way I can figure out which component I have to replace, without substituting each part one by one?

Many thanks for any posts made.
Kop442000Well... First, do you have virus protection? Second, have you installed any new hardware/software lately?

[glb]Flame[/glb]A more computer savvy friend set up my computer originally, and said they had sorted out the virus STUFF, so I think I was ok on that score. And I don't think I had installed any new hard/software. I think I had left it downloading something for a long time, which TRIGGERED the trouble. That's why I assumed it was to do with overheating?Does the MACHINE make any beeps or sounds in squence of some sort?

Solve : Network card problem?

Answer»

All of a sudden, one day my son's computer stopped connecting to the internet. I checked the Device Manager and the NETWORK card is listed under "Unknown"- with an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle. It says windows can't load the driver (Code 31). I've DELETED and reinstalled the device and Windows will say it was successfully installed, but it really isn't. The driver is up to date. I uninstalled Norton Ghost. My son claims he didn't download ANYTHING. Any help would be much APPRECIATED.

Solve : switched hard drives, now problems?

Answer»

I had an HP pavilion that had a bad power supply that fried everything except the hard drive.  I had a seconc HP pavilion that had a bad hard drive but everything else worked. I TOOK the good drive out of the fried HP and put it in the second HP.  I now have a working computer but some error messages are coming up and my biggest problem is that my monitor will now only support either 2 color or 16 color, therefore,  it LOOKS like I am running in safe MODE.  I have tried updating drivers for my monitor but it didn't work.  I thought about wiping the drive and reloading windows 98 but I can't find that version, only windows 95.  I have an HP recovery disk that I can't get to work.  Does anyone have any SUGGESTIONS other than buying a new computer? You want to update the drivers for your video card, not your monitor. How do you find out what video card you have to know what driver to install?HI sounds like you may need to install motherboard drivers, if you don't have a seperate video card then it's the M/B you need to install the drivers, if you do have a video card then the it's drivers need to be installed. If you don't have software like Belarc installed you may need to look and see if there is a video card fitted. Quote

Solve : 400GB Hard Drive?

Answer»

Well I put that 400GB hard drive into my gateway and here is what happened. I did a right click onto my computer until I got to the disk management area. From there I see 372.61BG of unallocated SPACE avaiable. It says it is online and basic disk.  It was set up as a slave drive to my 40 GB HD that has the system on it. When I do  right click in the unallocated space it will not allow me to format it and windows did not assign a (letter ) to the drive. What do I do from here? Please advise.

Thanks

OPPS: I found another way to do it and it has been assugned volumn ( I )Hello, how are you?
Are you sure that you have partitioned your new 400GB hard disk. If YES then Restart your PC and doot t from Windows98 bootable CD and then format thoses drives.
Otherwise you must partitioned your new 400GB hardDisk. You can do this easily bu booting from WIN98 bootable CD and type "fdisk" and I do hope that you are familiar with rest of the process. Be sure that you disconnect your old hard disk and only this new hard disk is connected with your PC.
Take care of you and others and be happy...I actually resolved the problem in another way thanks to the help of the hitachi tech support. It seems that on their webpage are two tools that can be used to check everything that you'd ever WANT to know about ones hard drive. They are DFT and Ftool. Once I got a code BACK of 0x00 we know all was well with the drive so we had to go in and lower the UDMA from 133 to 100. Did a restart and then formated within Windows XP through the disk manager. All is well and working fine. Thanks people.

Solve : Bios wont detect video card?(3 error beeps)?

Answer»

If anyone could help me with this, it would be grand.

My problem started when i came home today to find my main box running swell, but any buttons in windows (double clicking) was delayed. I was a bit furstrated, but it's a older MACHINE (socket 370 mobo in it) with two months uptime so i rebooted it. After the reboot i made up my mind to test this stick of RAM i've been planning on doing so since christmas, so i shutdown and removed all the ram sticks but it to see if it would boot with it- i've done this before so i didnt expect much problem. It's the same type of RAM has the other two sticks, but was not detected and i was worryed about memory leaks and slow down. The computer failed to boot, so i removed it and placed it the other two- i got a some warning beeps but with the noise in the room i was unable to tell what they were, but still no start. So i reseated them into 'optium' banks, and rebooted. Everything starts up, but no display.

I get the monitor working (red/green/yellow/blue bar type of display) then the monitor shuts down. So after a bit of refrence and research i fiquered my monkeying around had messed up something in the bios and the cmos, and it wasnt detecting the video card. I tryed rebooting with a older geforce 2 with no results. Then i removed the cmos battery and let it set for about four hours (i've always thought it needed two). Then plugged it back in (with the newer card back in). Thinking it would clear whatever i did, still no go, but i can hear and see everything running still, fans on PSU and all.

It doesnt detect the mouse or keyboard and nethier lights up.

(I've just nowed tryed the METHOD of unplugging cmos bat and all ram with the power ac cord in then unplug cord, hit power button, pop it all back in,plug in cord,go no good)

If anyone has any idea what i did wrong or how to fix it i'd LIKE to thank them in advance, and apologize for the many typos i problary am makeing and if i violated any rules and such of the forum.

I've only got my A+ cert so i'am still a bit of a noob.Hello friend, although I am not A+ certified but I have an ide that whats going wrong with your PC. I think that the problem is with your RAM Sticks. Dont remove any other thing. Just remove all the RAM sticks and clean them with dry and soft cloth amd also clean dust from the RAM slot. Now put the RAM back but they must be in specific sequence. If I did remember, the largest size RAM must be in first slot then second. I have no idea that which slot is your first slot. One thing, remove all RAMs and connect only one RAM in the extream last or extream first slot (not in middle slot if any). Now turn your PC ON and check if it works then put other RAMs OTHERWISE change the slot to the other one. I hope that you are getting me becasue you are A+ certified.

Okay do take care of you and others and be happy.
Bye..

Solve : Need help: Replaced MB and now XP won't boot?

Answer»

I've built several computers for my family from scratch without problems but not done too many major upgrades of same.  I decided to upgrade the motherboard/cpu in my own computer, replacing the Chaintech MB (with Athalon XP2500) I built it with originally (less than 2 years ago) with a Chaintech 7NJL6 (and Athalon XP2900).  I had hoped that the MBs were similar enough that my system wouldn't balk at restarting, and I would just install all the new MB drivers after I RESTARTED.  No luck.

Now I can't get Windows XP to boot up at all.  I get as far as the window asking me how I want to start the system (Safe mode, debugging, LAST Known Configuration that worked, etc).  All selections lead to either a restart or else the screen GOES totally blank and never comes back UNLESS I do a hard restart.  I can enter the BIOS, and have confirmed a reasonable boot device order (Floppy->HDD 0 ->CD).  When I turn on Posts and then restart, the upper right of screen flashes many post NUMBERS, not ending consistently on any one post number in particular.  I've pulled/switched memory chips, unplugged all unnecessary peripherals.... I figure I must have violated some basic rule of MB upgrading, out of ignorance.

I had a similar problem a few months ago when I replaced an (apparently) bad Verto video with a different one (also Verto): I eventually had to reinstall Windows XP, getting approval for Windows re-registration over the phone.  I'd hate to do the re-install again.  I never made a start-up boot CD for this computer, though I have another in the house (Kid's computer) with XP running, though on a Shuttle Celeron MB.

I use this computer mostly for home video-->DVD editing and conversion, as well as the usual home stuff. The current equipment is:

450 W power supply
1 GB ram (2 x 512)
HP DVD drive
HP DVD burner
Chaintech 7NJL6 MB
Athalon XP 2900

Sorry for the long post, this is my first.  I 've searched the Microsoft site and many forums, haven't found a solution yet.  Any help appreciated.

Solve : Altering the PDA from Windows XP?

Answer»

I recently obtained an Infra Red Port for use with my Bcom Mars PDA (Windows CE). All nice and dandy, it connects properly and I seem to  be able to move files to it.

However, I would like to be able to edit, organize and categorize the data installed on the PDA by using my Desktop PC. Is this POSSIBLE? Is there software out there that can do this for me? Or is there a function in Windows XP that I overlooked?

Any advice is much obliged.

JoshuaThere is no built in software in XP for doing that across the entire PDA.  Depending upon PDA OS and version there may or may not be a PDA My documents folder on your desktop where you could reorganize your documents and SYNC it back to the PDA.

The PDA does have a little something on it called "Active Sync"

However, when I select it, it tells me it needs to establish a partnership with the computer it is connected to. How do I go about doing this?

And are there any services that have to be enabled in order for it to fully work? I disabeled a few networking services I never thought I'd be using.. (Automatic configuration for Wireless networking, for example)Not sure unless you have some software that came with your PDA that you have not installed yet.

In case you were not aware Windows CE is an old PDA operating system.  It used to be Palm, Windows CE, and Pocket PC (at least the major 3).  Windows CE has been dropped in favor of Pocket PC.  You may want to check with your PDA manufacturer in case there are some upgrades for the OS or free software for your desktop.

Active-Sync is the software that sends files back and forth from the desktop to the PDA.  You had earlier stated that you had transfered some files, so your Active-Sync is working as it should.

Well, I did not transfer any files yet - it does make a connection and allows me to copy files, so I'll assume it'll work.

The option I use in order to connect to the PC is PC-Link - Active Sync seems to be something else. ActiveSync is not located under 'Connections ' but considered a program. Like the Note taker, adress list, etc.

I haven't had any software with this PDA (It is second handed). Would this be the proper site for Bcom? http://www.bcom.comI tried to send files to the PDA, however, this failed.

The connection no longer seems to be as stable as it first was, it is having more difficulty finding the PDA and keeping it connected is also more difficult.

Once it is connected, I can not send files. The WIZARD for doing so in XP simply CRASHES. Could something I use be interfering with the IR beam?

Solve : Possible virus overwritten 99 1/2% hd?

Friend with 3 month old DELL laptop got something in to computer,  even ewith all protections up.  Corrupted Outlook and other things.  reinstalled and found that the disk DEFRAG when run to clean up found the entitre 40 GIG hd was overwritten or something?? and there is 800mb left.  I would not want to wipe out everything as my friend did not do a full backup and will loose her material, (does anyone know how to make a copy of Outlook "Contacts", could not do this with the Dell cd/rw and very fustrated) anyway, can I clean up the hard drive without a REINSTALL of everything??  Thanks for any help. BobYou can probably try running a virus scan (AVG is free) and ad-aware and spy sweeper and spy-bot to start even THOUGH it'll be hard to do all at once, probably have to do them ONE at a time the way it sounds. After that you should have gotten rid of you virus. Run a defrag afterwards and then backup everything. You still might want to reinstall afterwards  just to be sure but whatever floats your boat. You can try a repair with the msoft boot cd but I forget if that erases everything. Thanks for the info but it is exactly what I did and nothing came up which is even more mysterious.  I have some freeware on a dvd that I am going to try and Ilet you and everyone know if it ok afterwards.  Thanks again.

It has been able to play Cmd and Conqure Generals and MaxPayne 2 perfectly...but I dont understand this behavior. Is my vid card broken? Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks! Is this game compatible with your operating system? Also, I am not so keen on these kind of games... Is this an online game, or software?

Solve : POST Error 8601 "All Memory Market as Fail ..?

Answer»

Hi,

I am ADMINISTERING a Xeon Server, 4x CPU's and 2GB RAM, running WINDOWS 2000 Terminal Server. We keep getting a POST screen error message every time we boot "All memory market as fail, forcing minimum back online".  We are forced to reboot the system on occasions as the terminal server sessions seem to freeze ?? (Separate issue perhaps).

After researching the net we are unable to find out what this means.

We didn't build the server and the guy who did is CLUELESS. Would rather not have to open it up and play with the memory if this can be helped.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of POST message and what may be the cause and fix?

Thanks Heaps,

LJ Krismhttp://www.co.umist.ac.uk/~ch/psinfo/psinfo.2.0587.htm

to run  the system maybe you need windows 2003?

win2k is holding ram mem..........TRY knocking downing page files/storage not used.......use the task manager to manage ram better.......disable the junk? or freeramxp.load the barebones of win2k.........< soluitions of the cuff...check that the  ram sticks are ok....for the boards . check the boards.  for any damage cracks/leaning caps etc.....for a system not to pass post! well.......is the mobos up to it......Hi, LJ.

This might help: "Memory errors status is now read from the BMC.  Because this was not done previously, error status bits have piled up in the BMC and the first time you boot with this BIOS you will probably get a message saying all of your memory is bad (POST error 8601). To clear his status, enter setup/advanced menu and select the 'memory configuration' option.  Enable 'memory retest' at the bottom of this menu and you will remove the error message. 'memory retest' option will be reset to 'Disable' in the next reboot.

"Remember to Clear CMOS after each BIOS update. Refer to the  Hardware Maintenance Manual or Product Manual for procedures to Clear CMOS."

Solve : unrecognized drive in bios?

Answer»

I am having problems with a Dell Optiplex gx270 computer's internal DVD/CDRW Combo - H.L Data Storage - GCC-4241N. Under My Computer, only one drive is listed and thats the HDD. The device manager doesn't show any optical drives installed either. Tried installing the device through Add/Remove HARDWARE without success. In the BIOS it says that no cd-drive is installed. I took it apart and checked all the connections and they were all secure. Still it wasn't recognized in the BIOS. There was never a floppy drive installed whatsoever on this computer also. So I can't do anything more with this, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS, NEILIf you checked all the cables , drivers , add and remove hardware then I would say it is a bad disc-drive.Hi Neil.

I agree with wrwss.  Either the DVD/CD-RW drive may be bad or the controller chip on the motherboard might be shot.  If the BIOS hasn't detected it, chances are good that the OS won't either.

One question: Has the BIOS ever detected this DVD/CD-RW drive before?

Three things you may try:

  • Check the BIOS settings to see if it is set to ENABLE plug-n-play & to auto-detect new drives.

  • Remove the DVD/CD-RW drive & connect a different ATAPI device (e.g. a CD-ROM drive that you know is working) to the same cable to see if the BIOS detects it OK.  If it does, then you know the motherboard is probably OK.

  • Remove the DVD/CD-RW drive from your PC & install it in another PC to see if the BIOS detects it in that machine.  If it does not, chances are it is shot.

Let me know if you need help with any of these suggestions.

I have recently removed my Cd burner from my old computer as I have PURCHASED a new one. Since removing the cd burner I am unable to run my OL computer I think I have the cables in the wrong place but am unsure.

It is an old computer with a hard drive floppy drive and a cd reader. can anyone help as I have PROMISED my son that he can have my old computer but if it don't work he doesn't want it. I really don't want to spend any money on getting someone to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mollymoomollymoo..."I have recently removed my Cd burner from my old computer as I have purchased a new one." Do you mean you removed the burner from your old pc and installed it in your new computer ? Or do you mean you removed the old burner because you purchased a new burner ? .... You say you think the cables are in the wrong place , did you remove all the cables from the old pc ? . Would I be correct in saying that the old pc currently has 1 hard drive and 1 cd-rom still in it ?

please let us know

dl65  Yes I put the cd burner in my new computer. and yes I only have a hard drive and cd reader in my old computer. I need some clarity about his? Do you have two computers that are now experiencing problems or is just the old one not functioning because you removed the burner. If you are having problems with the older one. the cables are to be wired like so:
-the hard drive should be on the IDE primary ribbon cable. there will usually be a marking next to the controllers indicating which controller it is. Something like IDE1 or IDE2. I would plug the cd-rom into the IDE2 controller cable. Both of these DRIVES will need to be set for master. In a regular computer you have 2 IDE controllers (Primary and secondary IDE). These controllers are just the physical connection to the motherboard. On each ribbon cable there is probably two different connectors. One is the master and one is the slave. Since you only have a hard drive and a cdrom drive then you should have them wired as both masters, on there own ide cable. If you didn't unplug  the hard drive in this process i would say leave it alone. But make sure the cd-rom is the secondary master. Let me know if anything helped. NEIL ::)thanks neil all sorted.

Solve : Processor Questions?

Answer»

I am succumbing and buying a new laptop. It's hard to get a NON-TECHNICAL* answer to the following, so if you can help, that would be great.

I am a victim of marketing - Pentiums must be great, right?

Well, Question One
1) What is the difference between Pentium, Celeron, etc.? Are they really all pretty much the same?

2) I currently have a Pentium 4 with 2.4 GHz. If I get a Celeron with 1.5 GHz, will I notice a difference? Really?

3) What's FSB? And what do the different speeds mean?

I guess, really, what would be helpful:

- Pros and cons of different MAKES of processors;

- What each additional speed increment really means...

- Other things to consider ("FSB"? RAM?)

Not using it for gaming, so that's not an issue. Here's what I use it for:
- Email
- Office (Word, Excel, some Access and some PowerPoint)
- Web surfing
- Occasionally downloading missed episodes of "24" and watching them in WMP

I currently have WinXP with a P4, 2.4 GHz, and 256 MB of RAM.

* In other words, an answer like "Well, with 1.5 GHz you can microdrop 2.6 terraflops of etruscan snoods per binary parsec, but if you bump up to 1.6, your sonic cavities will be able to handle ether retrobit settings of picardian T-Bits at 6.25 flosses of received timing, depending on how you re-task your demand assigned multiple access accounts. Only a loser would make the wrong call on THAT." is not really helpful.Basically, here's the just of it..

1) Celeron's run slower than Pentiums. Usually, a 1.5 Ghz Pentium IV is twice as fast as a 1.5 Ghz Celeron.

2) Stick with the Penitum 4. It's probably twice as good as the Celeron.

3) I'll try to make this non-technical. Each CPU/Motherboard has a Front Side Bus and Multiplier. Basically, a Front Side Bus connects the CPU with the main memory (RAM). The faster the FSB, the faster the computer, because all components run faster. The multiplier (you probably guessed it) multiplies the FSB by a number (usually from 1 - 12) The result is your clock speed.

If you have a Penitum 4 at 2.4 GHz, you may have a FSB of 400 Mhz, and a multiplier of 6.

RAM is a different story. Depending on what you use your comptuer for, the amount of RAM varies. From what you wrote down below, 256 RAM is ample for what you are doing. If you ever do any SERIOUS video editing or photo editing consider upgrading to 512 RAM, or even a 1024 RAM. RAM comes in different speeds. Most new computers have DDR Ram, while older have SD Ram. As you probably can figure out logically, DDR is faster than SD.

So, in short, if you were thinking of buying a 1.5 GHz laptop, and you have a 2.4 GHz haprop, scrap that idea. You'll just lose you money, and will have a terrible computer. Of course, if the other compnonets in the Celeron are better than in the Pentium 4, post up the exact stats, and I'll fill you on.

JackoWith processors, everbody is going to have their own favorites. But regarding to the speed of a NORMAL single processor, clock speeds matter. Without getting too technical, the clock speeds are measured by how many bits it can process per second. Each clock cycle of the processor will push out one bit (1 or 0). Now if it is a 2.4GHz processor then it would be able to perform 2.4 billion clock cycles per second. So the more of those ones and zeros it can push out per second would make the processor faster and therefore better. With newer processors that have HT technology, they use something called HYPER THREADING. Hyper threading is a technology that puts more than one bit on each clock cycle. So a 1.6GHz processor with HT technology could actually be faster than a 2.4GHz chip w/out HT technology because it is processing more bits per second. With RAM I have noticed that the more the better. Random Access Memory (RAM) is the memory used to store temporary things like open applications. RAM is also referred to as system resources. When you end a program like Internet Explorer the RAM that was being used to store that program will become available for another program to use it. One thing to remeber is that there are a lot of your programs that run when you start up your computer and they will hog your RAM and cause your system to respond slowly. If you want to see what programs are running when your computer starts up, go to RUN on the start menu and type in msconfig and then go to the startup tab. Some programs are supposed to be there but other might not need to run at startup. Front Side Bus (FSB) is the term used to describe the processors data bus. This bus carries all information that passes from the CPU to other devices within the system such as RAM, PCI expansion cards, hard disks, etc. Higher speed (MHz) FSB would be better, creating  faster access to your devices connected to your motherboard.  Hope I could help with your questions and sorry I don't know much about all the different brands of processors, just stick with what you find works best for you.
So if I put those replies together, the question becomes... Does a Celeron have "hyperthread" technology... So a 1.6 Celeron would be faster than a P4?

How about a Pentium M? Is THAT faster than a Pentium 4, everything else being equal?

Thanks!Arrgh! First of all, Celeron's do not have hyper-threading technolgy. Pentium 4 does.

Put it this way -

Celeron sucks.

Pentium rocks.rjbinney.....Perhaps googling your questions would give you a much better idea .  Then you make the decision.

If you stopped 10 people on the street and asked them what they thought was say the best car to buy .......you would probably get 10 differant suggestions........The same thing applies to computers...

It's all about what you want ........

Believe it or not, it's easier to sort through y'all's opinions than through all the stuff you find on Google.  I kept finding lots of charts where it would look like one was clearly SUPERIOR, than they'd re-run the test with la vida loca removed and the cocola tweaked, and get different results....

I kind of figured it was more like saying - "Hey, I'm buying a Dodge truck. But I won't be towing anything, just hauling furniture and stuff. I drive an awful lot, so the best mileage is important. V-6 OK, or do I really need the Hemi?"*

And then you google it and get lots of fancy charts showing you why Ford's suspension is better than Chevrolet's cargo space, and you're left with, "Wha?"

But I think I found a Pentium M that's affordable, so that seems to trump all comers... Right?

Solve : flcikering and lines in 3D applications?

Answer»

Hi, I have a problem that nobody here seems to have ever seen, I tried everything, forums, helpdesks, experts-exchange, ATI support, ASUS support and nobody can help me:

I bought a brand new RADEON 9800 PRO R350 and I see flickers in 3D applications and lines coming from the center of the screen. It happens in every 3D applications, screensavers, games. See an example in a 10 seconds video:
http://etudiant.tim.cstj.net/2001/9956138/flickers.mov

Here's what I tried:
-Cleaning OLD ATI 9000 drivers with Driver cleaner
-Installing latest AND old drivers from the ATI 9800
-Installed original BIOS and updated BIOS
-Clearing the CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard to restore factory defaults
-Unplugging the floppy, both CD-ROMS, one hard drive, all USB DEVICES, the printer and every PCI device to save power for the vga adapter
-Tried a power supply calculator: http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ to see if My power supply was alright: I need 315 Watts and my power supply is 350 watts.
-Formatting and reinstalling Windows
-Return the graphic adapter to the store to have a new one
-Trying every possible combination of voltage and settings for the AGP slot in the BIOS
-Remove every single particle of dust in the AGP slot with vaccum cleaner

THE ONLY THING THAT WORKED:
When I overclock my computer to an impossible combination in the BIOS, then the computer starts and says:
Overclocking failed
F1 - Run setup
F2 - Default settings

When I hit F2, everything works! but my CPU speed is 1300 MHz instead of 2600 and as soon as I
restart my computer, the flickering starts again, even if I don't! run setup during booting
you can find a COMPLETE resume of my comp uter at this address:
http://etudiant.tim.cstj.net/2001/9956138/report.htm

In this small section of the report:
http://etudiant.tim.cstj.net/2001/9956138/agp.htm
You can see that it says the AGP slot is EMPTY
So it would seem the problem comes from the motherboard

I've been writing to both ATI and ASUS for a month, but they don't seem to care since they don't know how to solve the problem and they always answer with stupid answers and things that I TOLD THEM I already tried, or they tell me to install the latest driver!! As if I did everything I did but never thought of intalling the latest driver!  then they pass the problem to another person, and that person tells me to install the latest driver, so it's getting nowhere.

That the very first time I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel, usually, I always have a plan B, but now, If you guys can't help me, I have absolutely no idea what to do, it's too late to return the RADEON 9800 now, ATI and ASUS were too slow and it's been a month since the date of purchase so I can't retrun it, I have to deal with it.

Here's a short report of my computer ASUS asked me for

And my cpu is alright, all 3D applications ran perfectly with my old RADEON 9000, the problems began when I installed the RADEON 9800. and I have the latest 9.0c version of directxor, did you meant intalling directx 8.1 ?
if so, this is a little weird, since a lot of 3D applications need at least directx 9.0 so if it worked, I would not be able to use all applications Quote

1.  Power supply seems to be pushed to the edge.  350 watts doesn't leave much margin.

2.  I don't completely understand what this means.  Default settings work, except CPU speed is half?
1.Can't be the power supply, I unplugged almost everything:

There was only a hard drive, the processor, 2 memory chips, the mouse, the keyboard and the graphic adapter, is it really possoble that the power supply is that bad?

2.You perfectly understood, that like if I reset my CMOS with the jumper on the motherboard, every specs is then set to default, but If i look at the system PROPERTIES, the CPU speed is at half-speed. And as soon as I reboot, everything is back to normal: CPU normal speed, graphic adapter all ?#$? up

1.  I agree, not the power supply.
2.  After resetting CMOS, you may have to enter CMOS one time and then save settings, after that, settings are probably correct.  Verify this by not booting to Windows, enter CMOS 2nd time to see if CPU is reported correctly.

These high power CPU's (and graphics CPU's) are very picky about voltage.  If mobo is a little off, it won't be happy.  You could try adjusting voltages in BIOS.
Yep, already tried that to, I entered the bios after the reset and saved and restarted without changing anything, but still, the CPU speed was alright and the graphic adapter was going cracy again.
It looks like there are always two options:
1-The CPU is normal but the RADEON is not
2-The CPU is not normal but the RADEON is

I also tried to upgrade the voltage of the RADEON, that was set by default to 1.50V, to 1.60, 1.60 and 1.80(Max value) but that did not change anything.
And I don't know much about CPU voltage, should:
-Higher CPU voltage and higher RADEON voltage?
-Higher CPU voltage and lower RADEON voltage?

Stupid ASUS support, I gave them my motherboard, CPU and graphic adapter model, they would be able to solve this problem fast if they would only care.

And what do you think of the AGP slot being empty in this report:
http://etudiant.tim.cstj.net/2001/9956138/agp.htm
Could it be a voltage problem?

By the way, thanks a lot for giving me the time you're not paid for while ASUS doesn't give me the time thay are paid for.

It looks like there are always two options:
1-The CPU is normal but the RADEON is not
2-The CPU is not normal but the RADEON is...

This got me to thinking.  AGP speed is a multiplier of FSB speed.  I think the offender is the graphics card or an AGP setting in the BIOS.  That's why report says AGP=empty.

Try this utility:
At Start---Run, type dxdiag.  What does it say on Display tab?
Hi, So, maybe you found the problem?
on My CPU's retail box, it says: 800 MHz System Bus
in the BIOS, there I can set the FSB, since this is supposed to mean: Front side bus, is this the same? because I can only set it from 100 to 400 in the BIOS.
And in the everest Report, it says the original FSB is 200 MHz, What is what?

So here's the dxdiag display properties, I only tried the DIRECT3D tests on the first monitor:

Woohooo! so, this is the problem.. do you have any idea how to correct this?

Is it always like that? I mean, CPU speed*13 and FSB*4 ?Oh, and I don't know how to set the multiplier either, is it in the BIOS? If so, what's the "BIOS" term for that multiplier?#[email protected]#$? I looked in Everest to look closer at the problem, and now it says:

     AGP Controller:
                 AGP Version        3.00
                 AGP Status        Enabled
AGP Device        ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

                 Current AGP Speed        8x
                 Fast-Write        Supported, Disabled
                 Side Band Addressing        Supported, Enabled

Maybe I disabled something when I did the report, but now, it's still not woking even if it's enabled.

But what about what you were saying about dxdiag, when you said:

Solve : start up probs?

Answer»

Hi
Not sure what happened to my old msg, but can any one help, i have buggered a computer up at the drop in center i go to. The prob is that all was ok and  i restarted the computer the power lights came on but the monitor screen was saying no signal, i restarted again and the same thing. I have tried the monitor on another computer and it works fine. I have also rplaced the graphics card with one that is working and still no luck. The computer beeps once then there is a pause and it beeps AGIN after a few seconds and this comtinues.

Cheers  First check cable is attached via the desktop/tower/to the monitor you may have KICKED it ??......and you have the graphics card .........properly seating........check with the drop in centre.........it support to check it..out.....consult them first..........as it NOT  your pc to WORRY about?/things happen.........~fate~try to reseat the memory, you can also try going into the bios and load bios defaults.Silly question but how can i reset the memory   reseat the memory..... take the sticks out and put them back in.... thats more than likely your problem....... if u reseat the RAM and still have no luck, you need to run a memory TEST software that you can GET from the net, and boot from that disc, let it run and it will tell you if there are errors in your memory, and if your stick is bad....  More than likely this is a memory problem.....

Solve : IBM ThinkPad very slow when wireless?

Answer»

I have an IBM ThinkPad R51 with a Wireless Router (CN-WF506).

When the IBM is connected by WIRE to the internet, there is no problem and it runs at a decent speed.  However, when going wireless, it is very slow.

Any recommendations?  Thanks
WIFFY..........wireless is proned to being scanned.....by TRACKERS....keyloggers.unless the wiffy  connection........is encypted...........then you will have problem........data/info is  worth a lot.........do you allow people to listen into your personal phones......well do you!you may have....I appreciate the insight (and I go wireless only on occasion), but it still does not answer my question about the speed when going wireless.

What is a WIFFY? and is it only for encryption purposes?  And how can it be obtained?

Can anyone out there help me?

Thanks. If my information is correct, your modem has a data bit speed of 11 Mbps. When you are wireless, how far is the ThinkPad from the router? The indoor range of your router is 300 FEET which is probably sufficient for most homes. You also have to CONSIDER the obstacles between the PC and the router. Cinder block or CEMENT walls will slow down the speed of your connection. Microwave ovens and cell phones (especially the new ones) can disrupt a connection entirely.

Try placing the router and the PC in line of sight and see what kind of speed you get. Another possiblity is to upgrade to a "G" router (54Mbps).

Hope this was helpful.

Solve : Toshiba Fn key - how do I switch to normal??

Answer»

Hi there.  How do I get my laptop (Toshiba A70) keyboard to revert to the 'normal' key settings, ie get the ui and o keys TODO just that instead of 4,5,6.  I've tried pushing every key/combination I can.  I can by holding Fn key down but I want to just be able to key a u to get a u etc.  Also tried searching on internet cant find a solution for something which MUST be so SIMPLE but frustrating. THANKS. New laptop - no manuals.?Couch,
I looked in an old Toshiba manual but I couldnt find a reference to this, so go to the Toshiba website and pick your model to VIEW / save a PDF file of the manual for your specific machine - there are several versions of the A70 listed there.

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp

then click on "Tech Support Centre" and choose your machine.
Good luck!

Solve : Media card reader wont work?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Belkin 8in1 USB card reader that worked fine but the CABLE became DISCONNECTED. On RECONNECTION, windows XP (service pack 2) detected new hardware and went through it’s automatic installation routine.

The device now shows as a Zip 100 drive in explorer, as a series of hieroglyphics (ending in HS-CF) in device manager and it no longer FUNCTIONS!

I tried uninstalling the device from device manager, disconnecting it, reinstalling the driver from the original CD, restarting the PC and reconnecting the device but XP does the same and it ASSIGNS is as a Zip 100 drive.

I cant update the driver from device manager as the Belkin software is and .exe file, not the driver itself.

Belkin cant help so any ideas gratefully received. Thanks, Dave.

Solve : usb 2.0, mass storage?

Answer»

On Friday our IBM Netvista 2257-33U running XP SP2 crashed. We recently purchased Belkins 3 port Firewire,  Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0, Iomega 160 gig external drive and an HP Photosmart printer.
All was working fine until Friday.  On Friday after AVG completed it's update and test I was asked to reboot, so of course I did. The harddrive did not come back up. Had to start using the boot disk and ran scandisk which found 266 bad sectors out of 2 million. Since Friday afternoon we have not been able to get the pc to recognize the USB, printer, or external drive. Of course the external drive has our backup on it.

My husband was so frustrated he went yesterday and bought a new Western Digital 200 gig internal drive in hopes that this will cure the harddrive issues, but I STILL am unable to get the USB issue resolved. The external drive is CONNECTED to the usb so the computer does not recognize the drive at all.

I ran the BIOS Wizard per other posts in this forum. When I click on the link to update the BIOS it opens that window but get the error that the program will be shut down when I click on check BIOS.

(Never buy your pc through the IBM employee site...POS)

I have not installed the new internal harddrive as of yet. Was hoping to get the external drive working to back up XP sp1 that is currently embedded on the pc but I cannot get the usb to be recognized or the drive.

Since the only backup that we could restore to was from Jan. 2003 we did not have sp2 loaded. When we loaded SP2, it continually tells us that we need drivers which would be located in SP1 so we are unable to intall those drivers. My husband uninstalled SP2 last night to see if we could download all needed drivers but of course the only update is SP2....Catch22...

Any hints or suggestions which do not involve THROWING this pc in the trash and us writing a nasty note to the IBM employee purchasing program. My husband is thinking of retiring from IBM after 32 years but this would probably not be a good idea.

The BIOS Wizard did say that this pc could be booted from the cd rom but I am unsure how to do this also as it READS the A drive, blinks on the cd rom drive briefly even when a bootable cd is in the drive.

Another issue regarding the new internal drive:
It says in the install instructions not to stand the drive up, yet the Maxtor drive that is in the pc is upright. Do you know of any issues if I put this drive in the location of the original one, or should I lay it down and hope the cabling reaches?

Thank you all for any assistance!

Hello all and thank you for reading this.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated as i seem to be a computer gimp!!! I'm on a dial up broadband connection with BT(UK). The problem seems to be every 4 minutes or so my computer drops the connection to the Internet and i have to dial up again-i've tried changing the power usage set up on the usb PORTS and on the MODEM, the internet settings for idle time are never and i have no more ideas. Is there something wrong with my hardware???

Thank you for reading this and also helping if you have,

MANY Thanks,

CraigCraig,
Im also on BT broadband and a while ago i had a simmilar but less frequednt problem. It turned out to be a dodgy cable in the footpath but BT can do a remote test first to see if the line is OK.
Good luck - and have a look at my media card problem posting next to this one!

Solve : Mouse USB->PS2 functionality loss?

Answer»

I recently acquired a second computer, however I have only the one monitor, and so have purchased also a small device that allows me to switch between wich computer is displayed upon the monitor with just a few keystrokes.

The device allows the use of the same keyboard and mouse for the operation of both machines as well, however it only SUPPORTS ps2 devices.

This is not a problem as far as the keyboard, but my mouse on the other hand is USB. I do have an old 2 button ball style mouse I can use, but I would prefer to have the use of my 5 button optical mouse with scroll wheel (who wouldn't).

I do have an adaptor that allows me to use the USB mouse in a PS2 port, but it of course limits the functionality quite a LOT (scroll wheel/button and other two buttons no longer function)

Can ANYONE suggest a way to get around this problem?
Are there similar MOUSES (mice?) available for use in a PS2 port that would retain full functionality with my setup?

Or should I just buckle down and prepare myself for a future of constant unplugging and relocating my USB mouse from machine to machine when from one to the other?
Can you just buy a new mouse that works with the other PC? (for the new one)

[glb]Flame[/glb] Quote

...I do have an adaptor that allows me to use the USB mouse in a PS2 port, but it of course limits the functionality quite a lot (scroll wheel/button and other two buttons no longer function)...

I've only SEEN that happen on a laptop.  You should get full functioning on a desktop with or without adapter.
I could buy a new mouse, but then I am still stuck in the current situation of  2 mice and not enough desk space for both

And I don't really know what to say about the laptop comment, other than this is not a laptop, and I am suffering the problem described above.

Solve : 486 re-build problem?

Answer»

I'm trying to rebuild a 486DX4/100. It was working in it's old case, but the power supply fan had stopped, plus the case was huge & ugly. The power supply looked like a big job to swap over, as it is soldered to the switches etc... (I have another 486 for parts) so I decided to carefully put the working one into the other case with the functional (and NEWER) power supply.
All seemed to go well untill I booted up, ...  the drives spin up but that's all. Nothing ! not even 'post' or any beeps.
I've re-checked the ribbon cables, tried other cables, re-checked plug/socket connection .... what have I missed
It is a 'no name' MOTHERBOARD with an Intel DX40DPR100 (overdrive) CPU, & ALI M1487B1 & M1489A1 chips. 4 PCI slots (one with the video card) and two Hard drives.
All is as it was when it was working in the old case, apart from the power supply (old one was 150 watt/ new one 200 watt)
any ideas out there  ?     :-/

Solve : No display on IBM Thinkpad?

Answer»

My son has an IBM Thinkpad 390e, running Windows95.
He used it about a WEEK ago & it worked fine (he was looking some INFO up on encarta encyclopedia CD).
Yesterday I went to load a cd program on it, but when it booted up, there was no display on the screen.

I verified the system was powered on, I heard the Windows music play, I checked that it wasn't in suspend mode, & I toggled between the internal LCD & external CRT displays (something suggested on IBM site).  Nothing WORKS.  The LCD screen is lit, but nothing shows as it boots up, Windows logo doesn't display, & desktop doesn't show.

Any suggestions??It appears that "video card" is blown out.  Some laptops have separate removable card and others it's integrated on the motherboard.  Your IBM ThinkPad is probably too OLD to repair.  I'm guessing it's probably 10 years old.

- the p166 still has 2 vacant PCI slots.
- If not, what option do i have?- my dad nor I will not certainly buy a new desktop system just to run a a digital camera. I guess download speed is not a factor as long as it downloads the pictures. for personalized editing.

-should i give my camera to my sister? who has a more capable system. I really want to introduce my dad the convinience, flexibility , and probably economy of  digital photography

i will still appreciate any opinion coming from you guys regarding this adapter cards. now my problem is availability of this cards( even other types and brands) in my local computer store. :-)  thanks....

1st link is USB 2.0, 2nd link is USB 1.1
since were dealing with an old system here, maybe ill lean my preferences with the usb 1.1 adapter card. but will a usb 2.0 device(digital camera) work or at least fit with a usb 1.1 port ? with the assumption that the aptiva system  accepted the 1.1 usb card. :-/USB is backwards compatible.  USB 2.0 devices will plug-in and operate in USB 1.1 ports at 1.1 speed.  For downloading pictures from the camera to the computer, USB 1.1 is fast enough.  If downloading video (not stills), USB 2.0 is preferable because the files are much larger.Hi here is an update with the USB-PCI card instalation on  an IBM aptiva P166 system. Well got a USB 2.0-PCI 4+1 port  adapter card, first thing I did was to put the card to the vacant PCI slot on the PC and then tried to activate the USB support in win98se by the Control panel/ Install new hardware function  in  SETTINGS.  Well it seem that WIN98SE wont recognized the USB Driver activation. I also tried to install the driver ttaht came with the Card ; well, after install, a message will pop out  NO USB DEVICE.  I cant seem to make the USB icon appear on the device manager window. Also WIN98se always boot on SAFE MODE  and  will only boot on NORMAL MODE only when I REMOVE the USB CARD from the PCI slot after turning off and restarting the computer. I’ve read in the APTIVA manual about conflicts with I/O addresses in the MWAVE adapter card in the Aptiva and the the necesity to adjust some jumper settings,  I have yet to try this option; I want to read some comments first in response to this post before I start messing around with the jumpers on the  MWAVE modem adapter card of the Aptiva. The USB -PCI card (VIA Tech) has no jumpers. Sorry guys. i really wished I could  make this post shorter.... HELP?You could try swapping cards to different PCI slots.  Sometimes that works.

BTW, IBM link above goes nowhere.  It now says:

Our apologies
There is a problem retrieving the document GCOR-38ZJYG.

Yup commando, I already tried changing PCI slots, with the same result. But I did try the jumper changing option in the Mwave card; and windows started recognizing the The USB drivers !!! the Photos and a quicktime movie did start Downloading from the camera! To a file in MY DOCUMENTS.
But there are drawbacks;  the sound and volume controls  DISAPPEARED  and stopped functioning , the printer lose connection and a blue screen  WICH says, MWAVE ERROR: VX D005 NO DSP BOARD FOUND IN SYSTEM, PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE. Appears everytime start the system.
My only  question now is to teach my dad how  to remove the CPU COVER  and change the Jumper setting everytime he needs to download and edit photos from the computer……hehehe, so much for digital convinience and flexibility.
thanks guysss!!

After a few more tinkering around and by trial and error I found a page in the aptiva manual about resetting the RELOAD DEVICE DRIVER at the UTILITIES SETUP .  I set the setting to disable and wallah!!! Every thing  started working again; the printer ,the volume control, and the Camera started downloading pictures to the PC buy simply  just connecting to the newly installed USB port and turning it on! I really want to thank you guys for  your hints and tips.  I like to apologize for my long and dorky yakity-yak questions, thanks for helping me resolve this hardware installation....  One little obscure setting in the BIOS can make all the difference.  Good to hear you figured it out.hey guys, while looking for the USB PCI card, i came across this store that sell old Cheap computers and old computer parts (knock downs). saw their line up of old processors like the socket 7 pentium 233mmx. Im wondering, do you think  I can upgrade the Aptiva 166 with the 233mmx processor? The aptiva 166 is a socket 7 processor. im thinking, if its just a matter of putting the 233mmx to the processor tray why the heck not do it! if it can add processing power to the old Aptiva do you have a thread topic That tackles processor upgrades? to save you guys from answering the same questions all over again.   or maybe i put on a new  forum topic..... Look at this:  http://www.geek.com/procspec/procspec.htm

See this table:
http://www.geek.com/procspec/intel/p5mmx.htm

It looks as if it will work if both CPUs are MMX (2.8V).  If your 166 is not MMX (3.3V) it will only work if the motherboard has jumpers to set and you know which ones to change.

Solve : Box flashing on screen too fast to read?

Answer»

Help! I suspect my HD is crashing... again.   I keep getting some TYPE of a box flash on my screen... it has a blue header and is a black box, looks like a DOS command or something in the blue header. But, it flashes so FAST sometimes I can't see anything at all, and sometimes I can see enough to see the blue header and black box. I think the blue header has a DOS command, or an address in it (maybe something like D:\volume ??). I can't really read what the header says, it is just too fast. I don't see anything in the box. Any suggestions, thoughts? I did a virus scan, ad scan, spyware scan this morning and had no viruses or ads, a few things CAME up on the spybot scan but I have gotten rid of them, rebooted and the same problem. Have also deleted all cookies and temp internet files and STILL the same problem. Again, any thoughts or suggestions WOULD be appreciated. Has happened 2 times in the length of time it has taken me to type this, and I type pretty fast. Thx.
