Solve : HELP!!!! HARD DISK ERROR ! URGENT !?

Answer»

Hi there.

I really need a help here.

2 hours ago I went to my FRIEND house with my Hard disk (Maxtor 60 GB ATA 133) which under NTFS File System and configured to be used with ATA 133 Cable (onboard Ata 133 Promise).
Tried to plug it in into her computer, detected in BIOS and windows but cannot DISPLAY the disk drive and also the content off course.
(Her Hard disk is seagate 120 GB formatted using NTFS file system). It might be because her motherboard only support ATA 100 and SATA.
Going back home with my Harddisk and her brother Harddisk on hand (his hard disk is seagate 80gb using fat32 file system)

Starting the computer then suddenly comes out the Chkdsk before Logon Screen.
I thought, ew it must be her brother hard disk which is using Fat 32 system got disk error or something (ntfs never using chkdsk, am i right ?)
So I just let it run. ( I didn't notice that it might be my hard disk drive (X:))
Then when I start windows explorer. My secondary hard disk volume (the ata 133 one's X: )  DISPLAYED in strange character and got junk in it and my existing files gone !
And the file system changed into fat32. Furthermore the capacity become only 19 gb total (should be 60gb) with 18gb used space and 1 gb free space.

Tried using "CONVERT" utility from windows XP pro (my operating system) to change back into NTFS
looks ok but comes with error message that it need /f option to fixed the corrupted file.
The command I've used is :

C:\> CONVERT  x:  /fs:ntfs

Take out her brother hard disk (the 80 GB one).
Start it up again, and the volume label comes back but without the content.
Nothing there. No junk and no files ! T.T
and the total capacity still only 19gb

What I have to do !!! T.T
I want to cry so hard. The content of this harddisk equal with 5 months online 24 hours x 7 T.Tquestion why have you done this was it to transfer files and why not hook it up as salve drive to do so...fat32 never uses chdisk....also you should have used disk MANAGEMENT?

Solve : new hd and no boot to windows?

Answer»

hyas i hope someone can help me out here is whats going on: I bought a new hd and stuck it in one of my pc's and nothing worked so i stuck it in another pc and loaded windows xp home after that i took the new hd and put it back into the other pc and set it all up to boot first from ide-o and nothing else, WELL it goes to boot up and says "searching for boot record from ide-0..ok" then does nothing else but sit there with the curser blinking on the next LINE.
If anyone could let me know what is going on here or give me some hints on how i might fix this it would be greatly appreciated thanks.Did you correctly position the jumpers? Did you properly configure the BIOS?
i have followed the directions to set up the bios from the western dig directions and i have set the bios up under DEFALT settings. i have put jumpers in and have removed them.did the pc you have place the hard drive have any problems? like the cmos battery flat check the ide cables if you have configured the bios to auto detect?i have checked all the cables all good. i did have a problem loading xp on this pc that why i took it to another pc to load xp on the hd i wanted to see if i had bought a bad hd but xp loaded fine on my other pc so i brought it back to the original pc and now i get this problem.
Now the problem i had earlier was when i was trying to load xp i had it first boot to cdrom and it said it was searching for boot record on cdrom but the cdrom light wasnt LIGHTING up during this time the floppy drive light was running instead but checked all cables and such didnt find anything wrong there. Do you think both my cdroms are bad? and that could be my overall problem?try this to see if you have an ide cable problem the hard drive with winxp attach it to the cdrom ide cable does it boot?or BORROW the ones from your old one?i tried that it didnt boot . i just put a different cdrom in an put the xp disk in and got connot boot from cd- code: 5 so goin to look that up and see what it means thanks for the ideas so far.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310123  try changing the ide cables.....

Solve : Pentium III Processor?

Answer»

I was just given a Pentium III-450MHZ processor I need to know what type of Motherboard would be compatible with it.  I have an ASUS CUV4x board with one of those, though mine's an 800... Check with ASUS Technologies for specifics.

Also try browsing the older MB offerings from Gigabyte, ABit, and IWill.

You may find one of these chips at a computer fleamarket, swap show, or 'recycling'/refurbishing SHOP. Or you can try a Web based SELLER of used PC parts, like PriceWatch.MarvtheMan....Your P3 450 processor is a slot 1 ....I think. A good motherboard for you would be a
ASUS  P3B-F   slot 1 ..... it will handle up to a 800 processor,  and fits a atx case ...
it has .....1 AGP slot
              6 PCI slots
              1 ISA slot
2 ONBOARD USB ports
mouse and keyboard
serial and parallel ports
It will support up to 1 GB of 168 pin SD ram ( 4 slots) either PC100 or PC133 work in it just fine.
I picked one up on Ebay several months ago.
Check the Asus site in the archives for slot 1 boards and then go E baying.

Cheers,

Solve : Big Ideas?

Answer»

alright, ive got a old Compaq laptop set up in my room.  Its currently running XP and has a external DISPLAY.  I WOULD like to use the external display and the internal LCD screen as dual monitors. I have a feeling i just have to find the RIGHT driver/software, but i dont know.  Anyone know how to do it?

ChrisYou videocard must be able to support more than one monitor. I SUGGEST you look into your videocard manual to see what your possibilities are. Most laptop BIOS have a setting for this function.  It will be simultaneous video, not separate video.

Solve : 64Bit technology?

Answer»

If I were to install a 64BIT CPU (AMD) onto my Gigabyte 7N400Pro mainboard WOULD it function as a 32BIT CHIP? (I donot believe my mainboard is 64bit compatible)

I contacted support at the website I would order the chip from, and they suggested that I should ask at a computer forum. If your mobo does not specifically support 64 BIT processors, save your money. And yes, they will run in 32 bit MODE unless you have applications written for 64 bit.Do you not require a 64 Bit OS to make use of the 64 Bit capabilities?Yes. The main advantage of 64 bit processors at the present is that they support somewhat higher FSB and transfer rates. 64 bit OS's are a year or TWO away. Affordable memory modules are probably at least that far away also. A full blown 64 bit system with currently available processors can support FSB as high as 1600Mhz

Solve : harddrive not being detected?

Answer»

I suggest you set the Boot order in the BIOS to floppy first.

What is it exactly you have done in order to run into these problems?what o/s and what pc is this >http://www.dictacomm.com/Trouble/control.htm   how is oldthis computer? and is it the same one with the audio/problems etc.......is it the win95 you were play with?first things first. the computer im having a harddrive problem is not the one with record problems. The one with hard drive problems is and old original computer. Im not even sure the make. it does say colorado on front of casing. It is sheer determination that keeps me trying on  that thing, but i am sure learning alot about what makes these computers tick. And thats a plus. (thanks to u guys). i am running win95 on it, until i encountere the black screen, while i was on black screen i was pushing buttons F1,F2,etc.. that the bios web page said to push and when i finally got screen to work(unplugged and reconnected with other monitor) it came up with this new problem on fdd. ok here goes this is exactly whats showing up now. 1st page of  bootup says:

rom bios 1990 AMERICAN megatrends inc.
lasermaster corp.
invalid configuring slot 3
softwere port nmi inoperable
fail safe timer inoperable
then it says wait.  (Is this my whole BIO page?)
then it goes to next screen and say:
system configuration and tells processor lm486, floppy drive 1.44 mb and so on then it says drive not ready error.please insert boot disc in A:
but i tried putting boot disc in but in just keeps saying the same thing. ok any suggestions. back to feeling like GIVING up again

ok hold on i think i have something here. i got to bios set up program ami bios set up and it looks like this.
standard cmos setup
advanced cmos set up
auto config with bios default
auto config with power on defaults
change password
hard disc utility
write to cmos and exit
do not write to cmos and exit

load bios setup default values for advanced cmos and advance cmos chipset set up
not sure what to do next, doess this info help? any clues? i did read all about bios but still not sure. i now realize this is probably my bio page. thank youI am not sure what you are saying, I suggest you load either the failsafe or the standard defaults in your BIOS.told you it was an oldy. im in bios setup program-advanced cmos set up now, and im trying to change floppy disc seek at boot from disabled. any clue how to on that one, as suggested previously. You are not being very clear.

What is it exactly you have done in the BIOS?

I recommend:

  • Loading failsafe and/or standard defaults
  • Setting your floppy drive as the first boot device.
  • Check if your harddisks are set to properly
ok im in bios now in advanced cmos setup. where it says floppy drive seek at boot: it is disabled. how do i change that to enabled? and how do i change the order of the sequence boot up from c:, A: to A:, C: as you previously suggestedor what about this. Couldnt i make a boot up disc on to cd from my floppy boot disc on my good computer, then use that to boot up crappy computer?I never tried copying the contents of a boot disk onto a CD-ROM. To be honest, I barely have used any bootdisks.

If your floppy drive seek at boot is set to disabeled, you should be able to enable it by pressing enter and selecting 'enable' or whatever other option there is.

However, I am not entirely sure wheter this is the option you are looking for. You can try, you can also set it back if it doesn't work.do has raptor has said set up defaults option hit the f6 key in the bios save and exit>http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cache:HaCiD5k_I0wJ:www.soltek.com.tw/soltek/download_file/Manual/socket478/INTEL/85SD-CV2A/85SD-C-AMIBIOS.pdf+ami+bios+setup&hl=en Quote
or what about this. Couldnt i make a boot up disc on to cd from my floppy boot disc on my good computer, then use that to boot up crappy computer?

Not NECESSARILY.  Many of those old computers are unable to boot from CD.  Some won't even see the CD with the Win95 boot floppy and CD.  They require the original disks that came with the computer.  If it's a 486 or even a Pentium 60 or 90, it probably not worth the trouble.

Solve : Monitor / Video Card Help?

Answer»

This is about my first computer build that I finished like an hour ago.

When I turn on my computer my monitor turns on just
like normal, but as soon as it is rebooted, the monitor goes off like it has no signal, yet the computer is still on. I think it is because my new motherboard has a AGP slot and my old ONE didn't. So all I had was a PCI Video card. So I think that the problem is that the motherboard wants to detect the AGP card but nothing is there.

For information my motherboard is an nForce2 Ultra 400 (AN35n Ultra) and my video card is a geForce 4 MX 440 (PCI version). And I know it isn't my monitorWhy can you not install the PCI card in a PCI slot?

I suggest you set the BIOS to first LOOK for PCI rather than AGP.MY video card is installed in a PCI slot.

And I tried looking in the BIOS for such an option but no LUCK.  Thanks for the quick reply. Please Help Me Out  :-/Could it be that you power supply is inadequate. Perhaps it cannot power the videocard for even a short period of time.

-You may have to enable some type of 'Advanced' menu to access more BIOS SETTINGS. However,  this may differ per type of BIOS.

Solve : Chieftec, Hiper or Q-tec?

Answer»

I would like to know if anyone could tell me a bit about the PSU's these companies MANUFACTURE. (Chieftec, Hiper and Q-tec)

I have not really got a choice, I would go for an Antec as Dummy2K suggested but I would have to TRAVEL to the neighbouring country which is not quite an option.

Bump...You may have better results getting PSUs via an Internet shop. I'm not familiar with Q-pro or Hiper, and Chieftec has garnered only average results. If you can afford an Antec, they are a good quality supply and worth it.I could afford it, the problem is, I can not order it. I donot have a creditcard nor do I know of any other (Dutch) websites that allow me to pay by giro or other method but creditcard.

Right now I have a Q-tec PSU and I am very dissapointed in it's performance.

Of the three you mention, Chieftec or Hiper 420 watt or higher are probably your best bet. The Hiper is only sold on the European market so might be you will get a better idea of its performance by visiting some of the European overclocking sites. The Chieftec 420 is stable to 400 watts maximum load and has a shutdown feature that performs properly. This prevents DAMAGE to the other components in EVENT of overload on any of the rails and it will restart after a few seconds of cool down.Great, THANKS, I will see what I can find about Hiper and Chieftec. Any links you recommend for reviews and the like?

Solve : New hardware new problem?

Answer»

Hi, I have posted here many times and I appreciate the help but now theres one more problem.

This only happens the first time I turn the computer on in a day, I type my bios password in and press enter, after that it shows me the page with all the IRQ info on it like always but it freezes right there.

I reboot and then I can get to the WIN98 screen but then it freezes.

3rd time lucky everything boots and loads windows and then everytime after I reboot it works.

What could be causing this problem? I tried re loading bios defaults but nothing and also I tried re loading setup defaults but still nothing.

At first I thought it was the ram, theres only 64mb of edo ram and I've just upgraded to a geforce2 mx 100/200 64mb vid card and a AMD K6 500mhz cpu, could it be this? My bios version is Award 1998 and seems to be working fine scince I upgraded it.

Help WOUL be appreciated, thanks
MattCheck out ALL connections. Cards, memory module, cables, everything. Don't take anything for granted. Make sure everything properly seated.I checked EVERYTHING and its all connected and seated properly.I donot know what EDO Stands for but 64 RAM is not a lot for the computer to work with.

Have you tried installing more RAM?I suggest you upgrade your PSU. The reason: When you initially power up there is a greater demand because everything comes on at once. Your PSU cannot HANDLE the initial peak power demand.  The upgrades you installed also demand more power, so you might find that an app that requires heavy CPU use will cause the system to become unstable. This can result in crashes, spontaneous reboots, and various other problems. The PSU is usually the LAST thing anybody looks at when upgrading but it should be the first.EDO ram is just really old ram and its RARE. I'm looking for some more on eBay scince none of the computer shops have it anymore. I defently am upgrading it to 256mb.

I would of NEVER thought it was the PSU but right now I've got a really old 250W power supply in it, those things you described to me 2k dummy are exactly whats been happening to my computer lately, I'll see if I can find a better one on eBay that will work on my mobo, Are the plugs on the PSU all the same? The plugs are same but some PSU's have more than others. Check your present PSU and somewhere on it, it will be labeled as AT or ATX. This is the form factor and they are not the same. A really old machine will probably be AT but that has not been the case in a good many years.Cool, it all makes sense, thanks a bunch guysYou never mention the major problem .........your graphics card....more info on ram here>http://www.kingston.com/tools/umg/default.asp   and upgrading the bios also helps...why build your own...FYI: EDO means extended data out. EDO memory was high end stuff when it was introduced. It hasn't been used since SDRAM got cheap enough to be affordable.

A small wager Merlin. A heftier PSU will solve his problem.

Thanks all for the help
Jimmotherboard is it this one?>http://uk.asus.com/news/2004/20040714.htmNo clue if that's the motherboard I can't figure it out. Is there any software out there that I could download to identify the motherboard?HP OEM BOARD are manufactured by different companies and are made to HP's proprietary specs. You can ID the board and chipset but you should be very cautious about you do. WCPUID.
You'll have fewer headaches if you purchase a new 'barebones' system (generic box with PSU, mainboard, VIDEO and sound cards) and whatever parts you need to fill it out, build your own, and add a KVM switch to allow you to use either machine with a single MONITOR and KB. The HP/Compaq crackerboxes are not very upgradeable.type msinfo32 in the run box it will give you all the info on your system...just get your self avanced system optimizer and see the difference

Solve : connecting a harddrive to a mobo?

Answer»

If it says something such as 2x UltraDMA 100, 1x UltraDMA 133(from Promise 20378) up to 6 Devices does that mean i have to connect a Hard Drive with a UltraDMA interface or can i use a EIDE or SCSI or Serial ATA.  But i CANT FIND a hard drive with UltraDMA interface. The 'Ultra DMA' interface is capable of connecting to EIDE drives with an 80-line cable. The Promise card is capable of supporting three cables, and of co-existing with the mainboard adaptor. You can also use the ATAPI adaptor on your MB, for another TWO (or more, on some MBs) cables. Each cable supports 2 drives.

Connect the newer 'high speed' drives to the UDMA, 'Ultra', or EIDE ports with 80 line cables. Connect CDROMs, older HDs (UDMA 0, 1, or 2 and PIO-only), and cartridge drives (IDE ZIP, JAZ, Orb, SyQuest, and 3M LS) to the non-ultra channels (or to backward-compatible extra ultra channels) with 40-line cables. Connect DVD drives to either Ultra channels with 80 line cables or to non-Ultra with 40 line cables.most modern hard drive are made for any mobo....more info on mobo is required...

System specs are as follows:

Quickly assemble, briefly reading DIRECTIONS as I go...

After getting everything in order I fire it up...  beautiful!

Went through the 1st Post screen before I entered CMOS and took a look around... made sure my drives were in order, boot sequence was correct...

Saved and Exited...

Come the 2nd Post screen (right after the raid check) it freezes...  doesn't attempt to read either of my drives...  just out and out freezes...  every single time...

I've swapped out drives, taken drives out, reset the bios via jumpers, did the hookey pookey...  nothing works...  always freezes after the raid check...  *screen where it displays the irq settings*

It doesn't even attempt to read either drive...

Frustrated...  I took one of my drives out of a secondary computer thinking I could boot into windows...  shame on me...  same thing...

I'm in dire need of assistance...  I've checked many faq's...  nothing...

DVD WRITERS typically will also write CD-R/RW media, THOUGH USUALLY not at the same speeds as dedicated CD-R/RW drives.

Is your hard drive formatted and READY to receive the o/s ?  You do have a hard drive installed.......

dl65  Looking over the components he listed and allowing for a HD, I believe a 350 watt PSU is not going to cut it. In particular, the +12V rail. The PSU detects an overload condition and shuts it down. The high end graphics card and CPU alone will need about 140 watts in FULL use. Then there is the HD, rom drive, system fans, and hsf, all on the +12V rail. On startup (not actual operation) that is about another 90 watts. So we are looking at approximately 19A draw on the +12V rail. He will need a PSU that can supply 20 or more amps on the +12 rail. It's also possible that you did what my husband did and  reversed two wires to the power button from the motherboard. Once he got THAT straight, it came right on. Lizwell i did the same thing, i just switched 2 wires around and bam it came right on.

If I have to replace, is it as straight forward as say a new DVD rewriter that I have just replaced or do I have to give to a shop to do?you can install a second IDE drive - it's fairly straight forward providing you have enough room inside your computer.Don't THINK I have much capacity inside the tower which is why I was thinking of an external HDD.  Are they not IDE drives?disregard the last question, I know what IDE is now

Solve : 20 gig HD wont work on my P1 - 120mhz?

Answer»

I have a clone computer dat was built.. and ryte now I just have a crapy lil 3 gig Hard Drive and I wanna up garde to a 20 gig.. but when I install it my BIOS picks it up.. but thats alll i t does.. jsut sits at the boot up screen.. its like once the comp detects it .. it just stops runnin.. (frezzes) .. plz help meAre the jumpers set correctly, man?not to sound like i am being SARCASTIC cause im not but you may want to consider simply BUYING a new motherboard and processor. The one you are trying to REPAIR and use is so old and outdated that even if you got it to work, there isnt much online that you could do. Again please dont thing i am trying to be condecending, just giving you my humble opinion.I donot mean disrespect, but I donot believe the person in question is looking for an opinion.

Perhaps he has in mind a certain use for his computer?A buddy of mine had a similar problem.  His mother board simply was not capable of addressing high volume hard drives (above 8 or 10 GB).  He had to exchange his drive for one with lower capacity.  :-/I suddenly recall how I obtained my 30GB Seagate. It was due to limitations on my Asus motherboard. If that MB is incapable of seeing a large drive:

Go into the BIOS, and the Basic or General settings. On the first HD (the 20GB drive), set the Drive to USER and the Type to Normal or Large or CHS (not LBA) so you can edit the cylinder count, whichever of those settings gives you 16 heads and 63 sectors and however many cylinders. Set the cylinder count to 16382. Then return the Type to LBA, but leave the Drive as User. It should show near 8020MB as size.

This will let you boot to an 8GB partition on the 20GB drive, kinda lame I know but it should get you going. You need a BIOS upgrade, though for a machine that old, I think I'd just bite the bullet and pick up a new MB/processor and move on from there.

Solve : Monitor goes insane on boot up?

Answer»

On boot up, my computer shows something that is hard to describe.  visualize thick horizontal lines of "digital" color covering the whole screen.  then visualize a second layer of thick vertical lines doing the same thing.  then visualize the pixels making up these lines shifting in pattern and changing in color at around the same TIMES the loading screens would change on a normal boot up.  then the computer will sometimes read "no signal" or itll stop at one pattern, which i assume would be the login screen.  Keep in mind you can see absolutely nothing though because these patterns have covered the whole monitor this whole time.  if any of you have a remote idea of what this means please tell me lol.  Just from what im seeing, i think i fried my graphics card.It may just be the monitor. Either TRY the monitor on a different computer, or try a different monitor on your computer. Are there any objects that exercise magnetic influence nearby?

Well i managed to hook up my monitor to a laptop and the monitor seemed to work fine.  I didnt manage to get a second monitor just yet to test it though.  and i dont think theres any magnetic influence anywhere.

maybe a little backstory should help : the computer has ran fine for about a year and the problem is recent.  ive been playing world of warcraft for about 3 months, and the first time this problem happened was after "wow" crashed and i rebooted.  the problem showed up.  i reset multiple times but nothing fixed it.  so i did the whole swap monitor and then swap comp thing with a friend.

to our surprise, both worked. i then reconnected both the original monitor and base and it worked! well that was that.  but then afterwards, during a bootup the problem showed up, and i figured... all i did was DISCONNECT the cable connecting the base and monitor and reconnect while they were both off and then power up and the problem was gone.  that worked for a while but then on this LAST bootup.  this happened again and this time, its not working.

whatever the problem is, it must have gotten worst somehow.  anyway i'll try getting a friends monitor to test it asap Quote

nd i dont think theres any magnetic influence anywhere.

You have to be absolutely certain. Remove cell phones, non-magnetically shielded speakers, sub-woofers, etcetera away from the monitor.

Solve : Computer crashing, CMOS battery low, mouse not wor?

Answer»

Recently I have noticed that the small red light on the face of our computer stays on after the computer is shut down. 2 days ago the mouse stopped working and then the computer began to crash. On start up it states that the CMOS battery is low. Could this be responsible for the mouse and crashing problems?Replace the CMOS battery.

Is all hardware properly connected? Do you hear any beeps during POST?If your battery dies or is removed, all it means is that your cmos will revert to the DEFAULT settings.
I think your mouse & crashing problems may be something else.I have replaced the CMOS battery and the computer is getting worse. It STILL gives an error message regarding a low CMOS battery and sometimes that the CMOS memory is the wrong type. It only boots up about every 5th attempt now and even in safe mode crashes within either a few seconds or sometimes minutes. The power supply seems to make a bit of a whine and the power switch is fixed to on. The only way to switch it off now is to switch off the plug. The one time it stayed on safe mode for about 20 minutes, it had a continual BEEP every 30 seconds or so.Try TESTING a known working Power Supply Unit on the computer in question.

How old is your mainboard?

POST and Windows are two different stages.

Disconnect the Hard Disk Drive before turning on the computer to see if problems still occur. If not, reformat the Hard Disk Drive to LARGELY eliminate the chance of a virus affecting your system.

Solve : My other HD is not reading anymore?

Answer»

[glb][/glb]HELLO
I had a problem with my HD C:\, I couldn't recover it, so, because it had just 3GB capacity and just WindowsXP installed I got rid of it, I have 2 other HD D:20GB & E:80GB (partitioned in E:38GB & F:38GB-sort of) where I had all my music, my own graphics (3d, Photoshop). My solution was install Windows into D:\(now C: Master) it worked it! but my E:\ (E,F) is telling me that is not formatted..! seems that my files are gone, true?? Should I format it or what else I can do?
-Note, jumpers are ok, E: is Master & CD-RW Slave, C: right now is the only Master.
Please any SUGGESTIONS?

Sankev [glb][/glb]http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000Thank you merlin_2

But I don't want to format or Partition it yet, I want to recover my files that were there before...
I know how to use Disk Management and all of that, I just want to make my PC reads again everything was in drive E:

Sankev
First, make sure that your hd82 (your 80GB drive SET as Master on 2nd adaptor) hasn't been accidentally disconnected from the flat data cable or its power connector during the changing of the drives. It shouldn't be seeing this sort of problem.

You may get better speed from this drive by making it hd81, you change the hd80 (20GB) drive jumper to master with slave and the jumper on the hd81 (80GB) to slave - or both to cable select if your 80-line UDMA cable is a CS-type.

Go into your BIOS (delete, F1, F2, F10, Escape, or Control key during a bootup) and see if the 80GB drive recognises. If not, shut down, then unplug, then reconnect, the flat cable and 4 pin power feed to the drive and try again.
Thank you MalikTous, i'll try that as soon as i get home

SankevClick Start, Run and enter %systemdrive%\Recycler.  Under this folder you'll see sub folders with names like:
S-1-5-21-1085031214-854245398-1060284298-1003

One of these is your user's Recycle Bin folder, you'll have to determine which.  Then open a Command Prompt Window and type: Start/Run and type in: CMD

CD\Recycled\
Next type DIR      part one  part  two next........LOCATE the files with the file extension that you wish to recover. There may be more than one of the same type. These files will all be DC??.xxx where ?? is a number and xxx is the file extension.

Use the COPY command to copy all of the matching files out. For example:  COPY *.DOC C:\Temp

to copy all DOC files to C:\Temp. Now you can open these files and find the one(s) that you wanted to retrieve.  Once you've retrieved all the files that you need, type the following command:  ATTRIB -S -H -R INFO2

INFO2 is a hidden file that holds the information on files in the Recycle Bin. This is the file that has been corrupted. Next type:  DEL INFO2

This removes the corrupted INFO2 file. Don't worry, it will be recreated automatically by Windows. Now, empty the Recycle Bin. The next time you delete a file, if not before, INFO2 will be recreated and your Recycle Bin will function normally.

HD.    I and two of my buddies have had the same probelm with the Maxtor HD.   This is whhat we have found.  If you are using XP and if you havea USB 2 installed and running, try this.

Turn off you ext hard drive and disconnect the USB 2 cable before you boot up.

After Windows XP has booted up, plug in the USB cable, and turn on the Maxtor and wait for XP to recognize the presence of another mass storage device.  If it does you are home free and You can use the ext HD with Windows explorere or My Computer.  When you are finished with the Maxtor, got thru the shut down proceedure  BEFORE shutting down XP.

After this, you should be able to turn on the Maxtor at any time  AFTER booting up.

If this does notr work, you may have tore-install the maxtor drivers.    Good Luck   i downloaded the decoder and it still wont play dvds. how can i find out what i need to install to enable sound? the hd method didnt work EITHER any other suggestions?type dxdiag in the run box this will test for sound. and tell you more..and  go into the bios and see if the sound is enabled.if onboard that is..also is you pnp enabled?

What can I do to get RID of all these frag files. Any help would be greatly appreciated! You could use better defragmenting software.

I use System Mechanic 4 Professional which COMES with an array of useful tools. Including a defragmentation wizard.

Thanks for the info! I'll look into it. I had a funny feeling that the xp program isn't too good!
I donot know if you will notice the difference. If there is ONE.

You can only find out by testing different defragmentation software. Thanks again Raptor! I'm going to compare & do my homework as best I can. Solve : My laptop won't completely power up URGENT!?

Answer»

I have an HP LAPTOP and I was on the internet when it suddenly turned off from being overheated as it usually did. I tried to turn it back on and it would start to power up for 3 seconds, then turn off, power up for 3 seconds, and do that cycle about 3-4 times before finally staying on for about a minute then turning off completely. The last time this happened about 2 weeks ago it just finally powered up all the way to windows and worked and this time it hasnt worked yet. I noticed that if i hold down all the keyboard buttons it STAYS on each time for about 20 seconds before turning off. Does anybody KNOW whats wrong? I need to know quick before I need to send it in for repairs because I dont have any money to get it fixed RIGHT now.If your laptop overheats, something is definitely wrong. Also, turning it on as you did immediatly after it overheats rather then LETTING it cool down is also definitely wrong.

I suggest you see if you can have it looked at by a computer store or the point of sale. The latest from HP restated the solution I found earlier on another message board... it worked for me:>> The operation of the battery is mostly controlled by the power
>> management settings in Windows XP. As the Service Pack provided many

>> settings for the power management. If these settings are altered by the
>> service pack, this issue may be caused by these changes. There is one
>> way to reset the settings for resetting the defaults is by reinstall

>>
>> 1. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, and then
>> System icon.
>> 2. This opens the System properties window.
>> 3. Select Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
>> 4. Click "+" beside System devices.
>> 5. Select ACPI Power Button.
>> 6. Right-click the device and select Uninstall.
>> 7. Restart the system.

Solve : Router (Extra) ports?

Answer»

Somehow, the other people who are using my network (And seem to have formed the habbit of occasionally powering down the Router and/or removing it) now managed to have added extra ports.

Our Router (790RH 4 Port Broadband Router) is only capable of 4 ports. I used to be  XXX. XXX. X.2 and the other computers XXX. XXX. X.3 and XXX. XXX. X.4.

However, all of a sudden I am now XXX. XXX. X.7 and the other computer XXX. XXX. X.9 (I have yet to determine what the third computer is numbered, I believe it could be XXX. XXX. X.8, it is rarely powered on.)

It is not a problem that bothers me, the router is still able to function as it normally would but I donot understand how this could have occured. They cannot access the settings for they are passworded and I made SURE that I am the only person who knows the password.Probably your router supports DHCP and the clients (the computers) recieve their IP-address dynamically. So your router can determine on its own, which IP-address to assign to which client. There are several reasons why your computers suddenly get other addresses, this shouldn't BOTHER you (neither is it a security problem nor a malfunction). Many routers also include the capability of locking a specific MAC address to an IP address in the DHCP server.  I lock all the normally used computers in my network to specific IP addresses, that way I know where to find them.
Thank you for the replies.

And yes, I do believe my router supports DHCP. It is by clicking that OPTION that I found out that the ports have changed.

However, they have not changed for a while. Will this be done if the router were to be powered down?I think yes.
But if you want to assign static IP-addresses to your computers, you can simply do this. As you are probably using MS Windows, I can't tell you exactly how to do this (see "Network" in the "System control" or however it's called   ).The IP is static, it has remained XXX.XXX.X.7 for quite a while. Whilst it used to be XXX.XXX.X.2.

I donot believe I should edit these settings, they run properly. I was only curious as to why it would go above number XXX.XXX.X.5.Just because it has remained the same for awhile does not mean that it is static. I'm not familiar with your router, but on mine I can limit the address range by setting the minimum and maximum addresses that be assigned. I also can limit how many addresses within that range can be assigned. My limit is set to the actual number of devices that use the network. I can also limit the amount of time that addresses are valid and force devices to renew their addresses or be kicked off the network. This applies to all devices on the network - not just one.I have not seen such an option, this is the first Router I have. But I believe it changed the adress due to it being powered down when we required to take off the power of the main ... distributor. Incorrect English term, I know.Raptor......If you have the manual which came with your router , It may well answer your question.
I am not familiar with the 790 RH router ........I use a Dlink......but I'm sure they all work in a similar way.
I guess the bottom line is ...if it works ok .......leave well enough alone......However if you are interested in why it does what it did ....perhaps contacting the manufacturer
Q- TEC ....I believe...or...http://www.qtec.info/service/support/manuals.htm?artnr=13563

This should give you the manual.

hope this is some HELP ,
cheers
dl65  I still have the manual, I will see if I can locate it.

Q-tec technical support is not something I would recommend. I have E-mailed them before and they provide you with very basic answers.

Solve : Please help if you are good with computers?

Answer»

My computer is an HP 6746c Desktop (purchased in 2001 HAHA) and it came with windows ME.  I did not like ME at all and so recently I upgraded to windows XP home.  Everything was going well until i decided to run my recovery CD from windows ME to reinstall some PROGRAM.  Long STORY short, I no longer have an operating SYSTEM on my computer.  I cannnot install windows XP home again because it requires a previous version of windows to run.  I would like to either reinstall any windows so i can use the computer again, OR some how copy the data from the hard drive and then just reformat the entire thing and start new.  Any suggestions? If I understand you correctly, you:

  • Have only an XP upgrade disk in your possession
  • You downgraded from XP to ME by using the recovery disk

Correct?

I SUGGEST you format and then see if the recovery disk (I assume it is an OEM version of Windows ME?) to be installed first and from there (If you wish) upgrade to XP.

However, before you do that, you can take out the hard disk, set it to slave and install it on another computer so you can safely make backups of files you wish to keep.

load wime boot disk in chose start pc with cdrom support load the r/c disk in  at the command prompt e:\setup then load wixp disk to upgrade..or you could dual boot ..if you wish to playgames or old software save the cash that winxp will not play..just an idea..which will you go for fat32 or nfts..

Solve : Sound Card/Drivers??? plz help?

Answer»

So heres my problem...The sound on my computer has gone...I've checked my speakers and they are WORKING fine...So I thought that it might have something to do with my sound card...Well I told some one about this and they said that maybe I need to download the correct driver for my sound card...Well where do I download a driver from?...I think I have FOUND out what type of sound card I have but the thing is I dont have a clue what to do next seems as I dont hardly know anything about computers...I also dont know if this information is correct or not so i would be very thankful if i could have some help

Sound card: Unimodem Half DUPLEX Audio Device

I'm running XP Pro...If this information is any help at all

Use Google to search for the drivers.

Copy the exact name of your soundcard into the search box.

This URL should suffice: Drivers

I donot know if they are the latest drivers for your soundcard. I suggest you search for the MANUFACTURERS website.

If you can not find the correct drivers, see if you still have the CD that came with your soundcard.

But,  Unless you have formatted your harddisk or removed your soundcard drivers, it should not stop generating sound. What have you done before this error occured?http://list.driverguide.com/list/company629/  login drivers password allThe 'unimodem half duplex audio device' is not a sound card. It is your voice modem's ability to function as a speaker or headset phone.

Open the box and remove and examine your sound card. It may be an ESS Audiodrive, Ensonique, SoundBlaster, Crystal, Acer/AOpen, Turtle Beach, MediaVision, or Analog Devices unit. Copy down the model number and chipset number, and use a search tool or drivers site to locate drivers for that model. When you have suitable drivers, use Control panel, Install new hardware to get the card back running in the PC.Typical Blonde......Before you start tearing apart your pc.....lol why don't you GO to ...... http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
click on scan for updates and let it do its thing.....when finished look over to the left and if you see any drivers
you will see DRIVERS    ( # ) ....This may just save you some time ....because if the scan sees your sound card and no drivers it may offer them for download.
Windows XP has a whack of drivers built into it.
Good luck

Solve : Problems after ram instalation?

Answer»

has anyone installed a new ram chip into your pc then when starting up in normal mode you suffer; no mouse abilities, 16 colour FORMAT and 640x480 screan res, not able to run any program but basic windows ME and msn messenger? I can use the computer for msn and pinball but i have to ACCESS things with the keyboard only,
the system specs are : 600mhz Pentium 3
                                    40 gb hard drive
                                    384 mg ram (128+256)
                                    windows ME
Ive tried restarting it several times, tried removing the new ram chip, dusted out the system with an air can. I also have no sound capabilities. When i try to adjust the resolution and colours after i restart for it to take effect its right back to the same problem... plz help meAre you saying:  without new RAM chip...all is fine; with new RAM chip...problem.

Is this RAM chip new from the store or new to you?
Is it the proper type of RAM for your PIII-600?
I am guessing it should be 168-pin DIMM, PC100 or PC133.Shawn Z.....First of all , what kind of ram does your Motherboard and CPU support.
It appears you had a 128 stick in first and it worked ok ...then you put the 256 stick in the 2nd Dimm socket and funny things happened.  When the pc booted up did you hear any beeping ?
Can you tell us what kind of a motherboard you have....
Model # would be nice.
let us know
dl65

okay heres what i forgot to say
prior to installing the ram chip that screwed things up, i already had 2 chips in and they worked fine a 256 and an origional 128, the problems screwed up on the boot up when i put in the thrid chip which was also a 256.
unfortunatly I cannot get you a serial number on the motherboard because I cannot find any info on the visiable parts of it to suggest a serial key, and the store I BOUGHT the motherboard from installed it and disposed of the box and that was quite some time ago with the warentee long last. When i first turned it on after installing the chip as with ever time i turn it on i get no continuus beeping sound other than the usual few beeps that ive always gotten off start up. So hopefull thats enough info so u good kind people can help me with finding a solution.Remove the 128MB chip and install both 256MBs, Win98 does not accept more than 512MB RAM. if it balks with that, try swapping the 256s around so they are in different slots. Use the first two RAM slots.Shawn Z....If you shut down your pc and reboot ........As it starts to post it goes thru the memory check etc .....usually the MAKE and model of the board is displayed on the screen for a few seconds .If you hit the pause key it will stop the bootup and you can see exactly what the board is. then just hit enter and it wll continue booting up . Do you still have the motherboard manual ? That would sure help......
So you have 1 stick of sd ram 256 mg + 1stick of sd ram 128 mg.........what speed is it pc 100 or pc133........is it buffered or unbuffered .........ECC or non ECC ?
Do you know the clock speed of your pc is it 100 or 133FSB..    If necessary look at the existing ram that is working ok .....it should have a sticker on it as to what it is. If for example your machine wants pc100 ram......some pc133 ram will work because it is backwards compatible but all pc133 ram is not ...perhaps thats what your problem is ......so the more info you can give us the better .
Is the FSB of your pc 200 or 266 ?
let us know

Solve : Monitor computer trouble?

Answer»

After successfully restoring my Windows 98SE everything worked perfectly but then three days later I started my computer and nothing would appear on the SCREEN. The computer and Monitor were on, I checked everything. The computer's HDD light would stay on for a few seconds and nothing would happen. I tried the monitor with another computer and it worked, so is my computer video card messed up or what happened?? . Now once again my computer doesn't work what should I do :-/start from the begeining have you updated your ram sticks graphics played with the bios mobo pcu psu etc... any beeps from pc on boot any POST screen more INFO..helpsNo, I actually havent done anything I have just used it for school work. And just stopped working. It doesnt make any beeps it just stays on.  If it helps the computer is a Compaq DeskPro with a intel Pentium MMX
and 19.2 GB hard disk space.

Today i noticed that repeatedly tuning on and off the computer will rarely get it to work and start windows but I dont know what else to do. See if replacing the Power Supply Unit will solve your problem. Turning it off and on will only make the problem more persistent.I changed the PSU and it MAKES no difference. The PSU is fairly big and supplies around 300 Watts but I have tried disconencting some of the cards like Modems, Sound Card, Ethernet Card etc, but it makes no difference. I dont know what to do.....boot to SAFE mode f8 key  go to the control panel power options and set them to never...this should load win98 with 16 colours vga mode have you got directx loaded? type msinfo32 in the run bos also it will tell you your graphics card on board or card...have you buildt this pc form scratch...I didn't build the PC from scratch I bought it like that.

Solve : TV-In?

Answer»

Hi!

What hardware do I need to get a video signal from e.g. a video recorder (Scart) into my computer?
To send a video signal from my computer to my TV, I use an S-Video cable which is CONNECTED to an S-Video-to-Scart-adapter (and it works!   ). Now this adapter has a switch "INPUT/Output", so it should be possible not just to send, but also to recieve a video signal from the video recorder.
Do I need a special card or can I connect the S-Video cable to the TV-Out of my graphic card (as I do for watching videos from the computer on TV)?You need a video capture card or module (USB connected).  I don't know what a S-Video-to-Scart-adapter is, can you describe that?An S-Video-to-Scart-adapter has on one side an S-Video- (for the picture) and two Cinch-connectors (for the SOUND) and on the other side a Scart-connector (which is plugged into the TV or the video recorder).
If you WANT to watch your computer screen on your TV, you take an S-Video cable, plug one END into the TV-Out of your graphic card and the other end into the adapter. Then you take this adapter, switch it to "Input", and plug it into the TV.

Here is an interesting article for you: Capslock E-mail

Idjit.
go back to mommy you little live at home morone. Were you just a big enough idiot to call everyone who lives at home a... 'Morone'? That is some massive generalization. But.. Do you even know what a 'morone' is?

Go BAG my groceries and get me some pie.Sorry about that, you a stupid little boy.How about we stop the name calling and get back to the topic at hand?

First off, please be SPECIFIC as to the make/model of equipment you currently have.  Do you have a laptop or a desktop machine?  If you have a desktop machine, why do you have a CARDBUS interface?

If the object of the exercise is to connect a firewire camera to a desktop machine, go to http://www.pricewarch.com and search for a "Firewire PCI" interface card, should be around $20 or less.

Solve : Monitor display is shiffted at startup?

Answer»

We have 2 monitors within 2 days that start up with the window shiffted off to the right side of the screen and a little up from the bottom. As if it is losing the settings when shut down. I thought this was just a bad monitor but then the 2nd one with the same simptons came along, so know I think that it may be something else....virus....update....etc....

Can anyone please help me out with this??

Thanks
Have you looked around in your display settings?Yes, None of the settings have been modified. This just started up one day on it's own. I am just wondering if there isn't a virus of some kind that may be attacking the settings in some way.

Thanks
I assume you have scanned for viruses?

If you are WORKING in an office or area where more people use the computers, perhaps someone adjusted the monitor settings. (By using the buttons underneath the screen)Yep....on real time SCAN and also did a manual.....No one else uses the monitor...this is in a locked office....

Thanks

Were the virus scans properly configured?

What virus scan have you used?

Are the two monitors connected to one videocard or are you talking about two different PC's?

Symatic Corporate, they are 2 seperate computers and yes the virus protection is configured properlyAre the monitors near a magnetic SOURCE? Such as, but not limited to; wireless phones, cell phones or non-magnetically shielded speakers? No they are not....as a matter of fact I replaced the first one thinking it was just a monitor going bad and the NEW one works perfect..........MAYBE that's all it really is but it just seems to odd that another one started doing the same thing a day or two later.....thanks for all your help so far raptor.

Donna
How old are the videocards installed? You could try replacing one. Or perhaps even clean them and then reinstall them. (Delete previous drivers and allow Windows to redetect it)To be honest I do not know...I have been there for 3 years and I know they are at least that old....maybe I will try that.....I have a feeling it is something fixable...Is there no system administrator present?

Solve : miniCD stuck in floppy drive?

Answer»

I work in a university computer lab. Today, a student inserted a miniCD disk into a floppy DRIVE! How should I GO about trying to extract it?

Greatly APPRECIATE any tips! Thank you!!Lift the drive door and extract it with a pair of tweezers. Afterward, TEST the drive by formatting a blank floppy and checking the format report to see if it formatted normally. Then copy some files to it and be sure they can be read and written properly. If the drive head was damaged, you will have to replace the drive.mini/disk can be run on a cdrom drive tell him/her next time to LOAD it ...in the right drive.......or tell them they have detention

Solve : can't see my desktop?

Answer»

My friend installed a new HARD drive and to do it, he made my computer a slave to try to save my files from my old hard drive. It worked, however, when I BROUGHT it home and hooked everything up, my computer booted normally, went through all the screens, except it would not go all the way into the desktop. I think something has to be CONFIGURED in the setup...Any suggestionsI assume when you SAY 'made my computer a slave' you mean he made your older HARDDISK a slave, correct?

And what are 'all the screens' according to you? Does it show errors? Does it refuse to load Windows? Does it 'hang' when trying to load Windows?

I assume you have set your harddisk back to Master when you installed it on your system. Either place the jumper on Master or on Cable Select and then configure it properly in the BIOS.

Solve : Computer makes sirene-like noise.?

Answer»

I installed my new 420 Watt power supply (Chieftec), TOOK out my 9800Pro and two 512mb DDR RAM modules. I also installed my Aero 7 Lite Coolermaster cooler (CPU).

All seems to work, at first the computer starts, then a wailing noise (Sirenes) comes out of the PC speaker and it shuts it's SELF down.

What could be the problem? I have rechecked all the cables, they all seem to be fine. I disconnected the Cooler for a short AMOUNT of time and the sirene is still being played. The power supply is brand new, so is the cooler.

I am quite clueless as I have never installed a new PSU and I have no idea why it would play the sirene sound rathern than a few simple bleeps at startup. I understand that this must be something that I have to handle with caution, hence the sirenes.

Help would be greatly appreciated. (I am now using a different computer)Sounds like the fan isn't connected to the proper MB connector, or the tach isn't being sensed.  That's the MB telling you that it has a cooling issue because of no processor fan.
It seems to be properly connected. The fan is powered directly by the PSU. The PSU has male plugs, whilst the fan has two types of connectors, one with male plugs as on the PSU and one with female plugs. I donot know wheter I should connect both or just one of the plugs. The manual was not very specific, it mainly covered installing the PCI or 3.5" rack for speed adjustment and attaching the clips properly.

I will have a look on the Coolermaster website.

However, the CPU fan is NOT connected to the CPU 3-pin conncetor. A case fan is connected to the CPU 3-pin connector. (I had to make some improvise when installing case fans a while ago). How is it possible that it still detects the CPU as being fanless? Also, the 3 pin connector only has one cable leading to it. The other two cables lead to the speed adjustment rack.

By the way, what would a 'tach' be?

Here is the cooler I currently have installed:

Aero 7 Lite CP5-8J71F

The coolermaster website is very... Inadequate, it does not profide much more info than that which is described on both the box and manual.

Could it be my CPU is DAMAGED? The Aero 7 Lite was quite large and I had quite some trouble installing it. However, the same goes for the Zalman cooler which I had previously installed.

I have checked and experimented with the cooler, could the sirene indicate another problem? Why else would it shut down after a few seconds rather than just continuing to function?
I have determined that my CPU is damaged beyond repair.

The very low quality CPU paste allready applied to the copper core grinded my CPU's left edge of the core and it is now INCAPABLE of operating my system.

OOPS!  That shouldn't happen!

However, the lash-up you describe for powering the fan is also bad, since it doesn't connect the fan to the MB fan connector.  The siren sounds is normally the fan failure sound, that's because the MB didn't sense a fan plugged into the connector.  I think you have the wrong fan for your MB...
The CPU appears to chipped from the left side. The core has been damaged and the result is a strange almost asphalt like flickering left side. (I knew the grinding noise from the heatsink was a bad sign.)

However, since one of the case fans is connected to the CPU fan connector it should not have detected the CPU fan as faulty, since I would have tricked it into believing that the CPU fan is connected and working properly.

Many thanks to AMD for helping me in the destruction of my CPU on my ongoing search for a better cooling solution.

Next time it'll be Intel. Ofcourse, I first have to replace this chip..Raptor: Why is it you get to have all the fun?  I must have done something very righteous in a previous life.
