Solve : Computer turns on but nothing more?

Answer»

Hello,

could anyone help me?

My notebook computer does not boot. When I press the power button the power light turns on and a I can hear the usual NOICE of the HDD. However nothing else happens and the monitor remains black.

I removed the HHD and re-installed it, the power seems ok, so what can it be?

I appreciate an insight.

Pinco i don't know a lot about notebooks...but maybe your screen burned out...

however don't take my word for it.
Thanks,

I am not sure, but I believe it would make the usual start up (bios, etc) without showing anything on the screen.

Pinco some one may have turned down the screen control knob...on a tosh sat its on the right-hand side of lcd..screen?check it out..Try the Fn keys. It might be set to use an external monitor. Many laptops allow selection of using the local monitor, external monitor, or both.Thanks. Already tried all the FN keys. I believe it should be something different from the monitor. The computer turns on but does not do any of the bios or post. It just remains idle with a noice of the HDD.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

Pinco_Pallino

may i suggest - although nothing has WORKED for me yet - to read my posts in the cpu / bios / cmos battery subject line. it could be almost anything :-/
does this happen when its on the battery.?..if so plug into the mains..any beeps when you boot this laptop..To Merlin: I keep it plugged because the battery is pretty weak (although relatively new). There are no beeps.

Thank you dreamer: I went through your posts. It seems to be a lost cause. On the other hand what could I ask from a 5-year old Solo Gateway?

Maybe I should juyst sell it on ebay for parts and get a new one. Unless...

Pinco_Pallino There is one more thing which may have to be considered for the problem with my notebook.

I upgraded it to Windows 98SE and so far that was ok. But, I later found, that I had not turned the computer off and it was not plugged to the power line.

So I guess it went on stand-by and then simply went off. This may have screwed the main battery (which doesn't get charged anymore) and who knows what else...

Have a nice WEEK end

Pinco_Pallino
it maybe worth a shot take the battery out...and then plug it in to the mains?ALSO you could HOOK it up to a normal monitor....this will prove if the lcd screen has had it..I brought the notebook to the technical serive of Compusa and they believe that the motherboard is damaged. Maybe they have a vested interest in saying that the notebook is useless, but I believe I have no other choice.

Best

Solve : mice having trouble?

Answer»

I have two mice for my laptop, and neither of them work CORRECTLY. One is a microsoft two button serial mouse, the other is a generic brand (Honli) optical 3D PS/2 mouse.
Both mice have the same problem: They only work in the x-axis. The cursor will not move up or down.
I've tried updating my drivers, but WindowsXP says I already have the best drivers, and updating them manually didn't work, either.
At the moment I'm getting away with using the laptop's built-in TOGGLE...
If anyone has any SUGGESTIONS, they'd be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Gordon can you have a look in the device manager...click the + sign for the mouse icon then click the PS2 compatable mouse port icon....properties...RESOURCES...and see if the box is ticked for use automatic settings...

Solve : computer turned off and wont turn back on?

Answer»

ok so yesterday my computer was running just fine and I was about to play some World of Warcraft when all of a sudden the computer just shut off. I tried restarting it but nothing happened. So I pulled off the cover and checked around to see if anything was not connected right, which it all was. I then use some airspray to clean out all the dust. I pushed the power button again to see what happens INSIDE the case and I noticed the fans twitch evertime I press it. It's like they turn on for a second then turn off. So I figure either my Power Supply died or worse, my motherboard. Any ideas from you guys?

My system specs:
AOpen Motherboard (don't have the specifics but I can get them later if needed)
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
A HIGH performance fan/heat sink connected to the Processor
768 3200 DDR
160gb MAXTOR Hardrive
Radeon 9800 Pro
2 system fans (one shootin in from the side, one shooting out from the BACK)
I haven't overclocked anything on my system either.Did you smell anything.. Funny?

I suggest you test and/or replace your Power Supply Unit.check the connection from the psu to the motherboard some have an habit of coming adrift....

Solve : I need some motherboard help?

Answer»

Ok, here's the deal, I just bought a bunch of stuff from www.geeks.com, a tower, motherboard, hard drive, processor, ram, VIDEO card, dvd drive. I made sure I was free of static by grabbing onto a metal COMPUTER case before i handled the processor and motherboard. So I put it all together, connect all the cables according to the motherboard's manual and go to turn it on and I get no responce from my monitor. I tested the monitor by plugging it into another computer and I get nothing. I made sure the video card was snug into the AGP SLOT and I made sure everything else was tight, but still nothing. I've been TRYING to get this to work for 2 days now, can anybody offer me some advice?

Here are some links to the parts I have:

Solve : MY CD BURNER WONT WORK?

Answer»

I have an HP CD Writer Plus 8100 Series. My computer is able to READ the CD rom drive just fine but when I am using a cd burner program it won't detect the CD drive and therefore I cant burn CD's. I have tried a bunch of CD burning programs, but none of them detect the drive. What can I do about this?I would reinstall drivers for the *censored* of it to start off..... then I would try and get my hands on Nero....

There is a CHANCE that it isn't EVEN a CD-RW drive at all..... what kind of CD-ROM is it?

Solve : DVD Rom recognises data only not audio cd's?

Answer»

Hi

I can't get my PC to pick up any audio cd's. It gives the message "Please insert a DISK into drive D". Data cd's work fine.

I reinstalled the driver, also fairly confident that my pc is virus / spyware free.

Any ideas?I don't have a clue as to what type of machine this is; what OS you are running or what MIGHT have happened prior to this to cause this dilemna i.e. was any hardware/software installed recently....
However i'll go out on a limb here cause i'm FEELING adventurous this afternoon.
Go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and right click on the CDRom drive and select Uninstall...
Re-boot and Windows will automatically re-install the drivers for that device. Quote

fairly confident that my pc is virus / spyware free.

Famous LAST words......Operating system is Windows XP home on a Intel CELERON 2.8GHz.

If this means anything to anyone for the DVD: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4521B.

I've tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers, doesn't solve the problem.

I'n not sure what caused it and how long it has been like this but it used to work. I noticed it first when trying to copy an audio cd using Nero. I since uninstalled Nero, used the Nero cleaner, reinstalled drivers etc still no success.

Anything else I can try?

Try the drive in another machine. Then you will know if it is the drive or your configuration. this removes all doubt. If it doesn't work in another machine get a new drive.I unfortunately don't have access to another machine. Can I check the configuration first? Am i wrong in thinking that it can't be a problem with the drive if can still read dvds and data cds?All things are possiblble with computers. It seems like you have covered possible software/configuration possibilities. Is the problem only with copied CDs?
Can you play a song that you purchased from a shop?No I can't play any purchased music cd.

Solve : pls. help-my PC freezes after hardware detection?

Answer»

I'm having an old PC and it could no longer load its OS.After i boot it detects all the hardwares and freezes it could not get to load its OS.My OS is XPSP1.this is inconsistent.it loads the OS smetimes but most of the times it doesn't.The most important thing is what happened to it. Did it have spyware/adware/virus prot3ection in place and being used? What computer make/model? How old is it? Are you the only user of this machine? Has anyhone been monkeying around inside the case? What are the computer specifications - RAM, HARD drive, etc.

Just a few details like this would be helpful so we are not left to guess. Quote

yes it has virus /spyware and adware protection its not even CONNECTED to the net.
its a P3 866mhz assus mobo. its 4 yrs. old .hehe bit outdated.the last thing i change was the monitor.it worked for a few weeks and after that i get this problem.also i observed that is prompts an error on the kboard being not DETECTED or something like not compatible.

thanks<

The exact error messages are more helpful. I think you need to do several things. A P3 866 is not that ancient and perhaps that machine has some more good years in it.

Remove the CMOS battery to CLEAR the BIOS for 10 minutes, then reinstall.

Use a PS/2 keyboard and mouse for this drill.

remove and reseat all cards and RAM.

Do you have a legal XP CD? It may be time to reinsall. If you have any important data on the drive back it up.

Again, posting details on motherboard, RAM, etc. is helpful.

WIndows will not fix bad HARDWARE, but you may have other configuration problems.
You might need to upgrade your chipset drivers.thanks
i'll try your solutions.

Don't forget to post back with the outcome - good or bad. Do you mean that when you turn it on the machine freezes after the memory check and auto ide detect on initial startup

I agree with GX1 the machine should have a cpl of good years left in it

Solve : BIOS/CMOS problem?

Answer»

Ok I'm running a gigabyte mobo (model 7nf rf or some such i believe)
512mb ddr400 ram
128mb nvidea mx4000
twin 80gb HDs
win98se
AMD sempron2400(1.67ghz)

i was playing with the bios(/cmos?) overclocking i changed the proccesor from 166mhz to 200MHZ and the memory to %120 hti save and exit. computer will not reboot gives me a blank screen and gives one 1.5 or so second beep about every 3 seconds. i have tried putting the jumper on the CMOS_CLR (with power CORD unplugged). i've also tried leaving the power unplugged overnight and the CMOS battery out. Things have not changed at all. i would really appreciate any help i can get, am i possible going to have to get a new mobo?Did you try putting the jumper on the cmos - clear while the battery was out? Might try a different memory module if all else fails. Or remove 1 at a time if you have more than 1.just one stick of ram, i'll try the jump and BAT thoughI don't know if the beeping would be translated as 1 beep or continous beeping.... But, on most mainboards they both indicate a memory problem. The continious beeping could also be a video problem. My bet is you fried the memory stick. Perhaps borrow one from someone to see for SURE before you buy another. There is a lesson here about overclocking if you don't know what you're doing.

Solve : CANON USB MFP PRINTER?

Answer»

Just purchased a New Canon LASER MFP. Have attempted to install said printer numerous times with no success. Bought and INSTALLED new USB 2.0 card, have installed & re-installed all drivers. Computer recognizes printer, but when I try to print I get a "CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK" error message. Spoke with Canon Tech, was told it is a computer problem. Had a LEXMARK printer attached, and had no issues. Attached the printer to other computer at WORK, and it performed flawlessly.
Said computer is DIMENSION 2100, WITH WIN98 SE.

Solve : I Can't Get Windows to Boot?

Answer»

I am relatively new to building computers. This is the second computer i am building. I just put everything together in the areas that i could remember and everything seems to be in its correct place. When i try to install windows though, it boots up the windows setup, then begins checking things, then just before the screen where it should allow me to continue with installation it always says there is an error and that windows has shut down. The only thing i think it could be is that i hooked something up such as an IDE cable incorrectly because the CD works fine on the first computer i built. Please help me, im desperate to get this thing working. If you could give me some kind of checklist or advise for plugging in all the cables i think that would help. One more thing, one time, while it said "setting up windows", it was frozen because i forgot to put the power connector in the hard drive. Frustrated, i TURNED the computer off in a hurry and now when i turn it on, it doesnt even go to the set up screen. Please, i really need help and i hope i didnt damage anything. I'm really worried because these are all new parts. Does anyone have advice?

AMD Athlon 3500+
160 GB Maxtor hard drive (it works, i tested it with my other computer)
Gigabyte NForce 4 SLI Motherboard
Make certain none of the components are overheating.

Is all hardware properly and firmly connected?I don't think anything is overheating, im not sure what all i have to plug in. I thought all i needed to do was run the IDE cable from the hard drive to the motherboard slot where it fits. Also, pard of the edge of the IDE cable broke and the little bar across the top is loose. Could that affect it?Yes. You should replace any damaged equipment and refer to the mainboard manual for instructions on how to properly connect all hardware.also, the CPU temperature and other reading arent SHOWING up when i start the computer. On my other computer, they would show up at the start screen. is that a problem?I read the motherboard instructions and they dont really say anything about what to plug and where. The instructions are really confusing and they aren't very detailed. They say where a bunch of things should be plugged but i don't even have the cables for those areas.I am really starting to get frustrated because i know it is something small and stupid. Is there somewhere i can go to see a professional for a cheap price?do i need to do something in BIOS before i try to install windows? Quote

also, the CPU temperature and other reading arent showing up when i start the computer. On my other computer, they would show up at the start screen. is that a problem?

That may or may not be an option on this motherboard.

Make sure all RAM, cables and cards are seated properly and in the right spot. The red edge of the IDE cable goes nearest the power connector and it only fits properly one direction. Make sure you didn't bend any of the pins.

Sometimes the best thing to do is put in the bare minimum - motherboard, CPU, one stick of RAM, video card and floppy. See if it boots from there with a floppy boot disk (free at www.bootdisk.com) Then add one component at a time and see if the machine seems to function normally. If the hard drive works, then add a CDROM, etc., but make sure it is correctly BEFORE introducing another variable. Keep us posted.

You are sure the RAM is compatible with that motherboard? You can download a free memory checker at www.memtest86.com to see if it functions correctly.

I think you can do it. Just don't get in a hurry and post as you go, if necessary.

If you do give up, a local computer shop can do it for a few dineros. Quote
also, the CPU temperature and other reading arent showing up when i start the computer. On my other computer, they would show up at the start screen. is that a problem?

No.

Quote
do i need to do something in BIOS before i try to install windows?

Well, you need to set the CD-ROM player as the first boot device. You will also want to check if the BIOS is configured OPTIMALLY for your needs and system. Plus; you have to make certain your HDD is detected properly. Quote
I don't think anything is overheating, im not sure what all i have to plug in.

Important things to know if you are building a system. fouramerica ...Perhaps you could start by giving us the exact model of your MOBO ...... "Gigabyte NForce 4 SLI Motherboard " when I looked at the Gigabyte site ....the are 4 I think in that family ...which one do you have .

Then perhaps you could confirm the exact type ( model number of your 160gb Maxtor )

Exactly what size and type of Ram are you using ?

Tell us if you have the HD plugged into the primary IDE or the secondary IDE .....

What do you have the HD jumpers set as ?

What bios does your mobo use ?

Do you have the fan mounted correctly on the heat sink .......

Did you apply the thermal paste per the instructions ?

Have you GONE into the bios and made sure it's set up correctly ?

What is the wattage of your power supply?

This is the sort of info we need to be able to assist you .

Solve : Trying to get two monitors...?

Answer»

Hello all. I received a new monitor for Christmas and FOOLISHLY assumed that my graphics card would allow me to use both my new (a Dell Flat Panel) and old monitor (a Dell CRT) at the same time. I would LIKE to keep using the graphics card I have installed (because of the graphic-intense games I play) but also want to use two monitors. Does anyone have any suggestions for the most painless way to accomplish this?

Currently I have an eMachine Desktop (T3085) with a AMD Athlon™ XP 3000+ Processor, 1GB of DDR (PC 2700) RAM, and Windows XP Home Edition. It came with a nVidia nForce 2 card but I upgrade to use a nVidia GeForce 6800 GT card. (It, apparently, does NOT support dual monitors ). The GeForce 6800 has both a typical 15-pin VGA connection (currently being used by the CRT monitor) and an unused DVI-I connection. The CRT monitor has only a 15-pin VGA cable and the Flat Panel has both a VGA and a DVI-D connection.

I am using my AGP slot for the GeForce 6800 GT but still have an empty PCI slot. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and let me know if you need any more information. Thanks in ADVANCE!If your videocard has two of the same type of connectors you can buy a CONVERTER which allows you to connect either a VGA or DVI. Depending on what you're converting from.

Solve : PROBLEMS WITH BIOS UPDATE?

Answer»

I have read that if a BIOS upgrade causes malfunction, the only way to bring BIOS to its past STATUS is trought a SIMILAR MB. If I do not find that blessed similar MB, I'll lose mine, I presume. Am I right??Some manufacturers let you downgrade a BIOS to a previous version (i.e.Dell) but it depends on the exact motherboard.

Many people get in trouble flashing a BIOS just because there is a newer version, not because of problems they were having, or increased functionaliy they don't NEED, but just because it is available. When something goes wrong with the procedure it can be disastrous, and all for no good reason.

I hope you are not in that position, but what specifically did you do and what is the equipment involved?I have a video card NVIDIA, 64M, I've tried to use it, but PC do not want. Just because of Flight Simulation. I was thinking if BIOS update would solve this problemYou might want to try the latest drivers. I doubt it has to do with the BIOS.

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Be sure to load the right ones for your specific card and operating system.I'll try to install video card following your recomendation and not updating BIOS. As soon as I have results I'll informgood luck. It's a simple procedure, but post back if you get stuck.Unless the BIOS update makes mentioning of newly supported videocards, which I doubt, it might do more harm than good if you do not pay careful attention.Definetively I did not update bios. Not only in this forum, but some friends of mine have told me to forget bios for now. I have installed NVidia, with no results. PC get blocked. Maybe IRQ be the responsible. My MB has a 8M video card, AGP slot, by SIS. This works fine. I'll install flight simulator in another PC...See if there's a Flight Simulator patch available. You may need to disable your onboard video in the BIOS if you are installing a separate video card. Some motherboards do this automatically when a card is inserted, some do not.

Solve : Soundblaster card only outputs on one jack...?

Answer»

I have desktop computer in tower configuration running MS XP Home with all the latest patches. It is using a 2.5 Mhz PENTIUM 4 processor and has a SoundBlaster Audigy 5.1 sound card. The video card is an nVidia with 128MB of video RAM (I believe it is a 6700, but I'll check). I have had the system about two years. For the first year or so everything was fine. Then we moved. I powered down the system, unhooked everything, and drove it to our new place cushioned in the back seat of my car. When I hooked everything back up, I could only get sound to come from one jack on the sound card.

There are five JACKS on the back of the card. As you look at the back of the computer they are from LEFT to right: Black out, green out, pink out, blue in, orange out. (I will double check this evening, but that is how I remember them). In any case the only jack that works is the second from the left (which I believe is green). I tested each jack with a set of headphones and that is the only one which gives off sound when I play system sounds in the Sounds tab of the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties of the Control Panel.

I have switched PCI slots on the card, and Windows correctly finds the card as new and installs the drivers. I have gone to the Creative Labs site and run their update wizard. It correctly finds the card and updates the drivers. When I look in the Device Manager, I do not see any conflicts.

The only change to the system before this problem occurred was the addition of a 2.0 USB card, but sound continued to play fine after it was installed.. Since the problem started the only changes have been moving the sound card to a different slot as mentioned above and replacing the hard drive.

The only sound that I get from the system other than from that one jack is a beep from the system speaker on boot up. I have run out of things that I know to look at. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :-?

Thanks--

AlMake certain Windows isn't set to use the Line-in as Rear-speaker out and Mic as Center/Subwoofer. Perhaps your soundcard features other capabilities as well.

You can control this from the Advanced button in the Sound configuration table.

Also; you should have removed drivers from your previous soundcard before installing a new one.Are you talking about the "Advanced Audio Properties" where you pick the speaker configuration from a drop down? I have played with selecting different configurations, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I am not seeing anything where I can explicitly set the line-in and mic (but I did plug my headset inito each jack...).

I believe that I removed all of the sound drivers when I removed the card and reinserted it in a new slot, but I can try that again.

Thanks for the suggestions!I actually had a hard time finding it myself, I thought the Mic port was destroyed, but it turned out to be converted to a CTR/SUB jack.

I found the options under:

 • Start
 • Settings
 • Control Panel
 • Sound and Audio Devices
 • Advanced button under Device Volume
 • Advanced under any of slides available

It may or may not be there, I think it depends on the type of soundcard installed/selected or perhaps on the type of drivers installed.

Thanks, again I don't remember an Advanced button under the slides, but in checking it on my work PC (which doesn't show such a button) I see that there are some options as to which slides actually show. I will check that out as well as look for an advanced button under the slides. Isn't there also a setting somewhere to choose between 2.1 and 5.1 output? Maybe that got changed somehow?

control panel / sounds and audio devices / speaker settings / advancedYes there is. That is a drop down. I tried most (if not all) of the options in that list but with no luck. Did you install the original drivers or did you let Windows install drivers for you? Before my drive died, I had just reused the ones that I had. However, when I lost the drive (which was well after this problem started), I discovered that I did not have the drivers for the card. I went and let Windows find the drivers and then I went to the Creative Labs site and let their automatic update software PROVIDE me with the latest drivers for the cards... For better or WORSE, they installed with no problem. So you have access to a SoundBlaster configuration menu, yes?Well, I might, but I've never used one. I just went to their website and let their "Software AutoUpdate" figure out what I had. Then I just installed what it gave me. There may have been a configuration utility in the download. I'll check when I get home...It may have come with an Audio Wizard that allows you to test all channels.I'll look around and see if I can find such a thing.Let me know how it works out.You could also boot a Live Linux CD and see if the card is functional under that O/S, or try it in another machine to see. although there are no moving parts, sometimes there are failures. It would either rule in or out a hardware issue. I assume if you have onboard sound it is disabled in BIOS?

Solve : Help! Laptop won't start?

Answer» HELP! I have a Toshiba Sattelite Pro 6100. I push the power button to start it up, the front panel LIGHTS flash green for a split second, and then the front panel power light flashes on and off amber. THats all it will do, no fans, no noise, and I have to remove the battery to get the flashing amber light to stop. Pushing the power button while the amber light is flashing, does nothing. Its not the power supply, as it charges the battery and happens while using the power supply or INTERNAL battery. Any ideas at all? I've read a few similar topics and it sounds like the motherboard or HDD, but I don't want to start replacing things that aren't needed.

Thanks! How OLD is the machine and most importantly what happened prior to this? Are you he only POSSIBLE user of this machine? Not sure of the age, but its a P4 1.8 with XP. There was a previous owner. Not sure about previous history, since this is how I received it.Maybe this is the reason it was sold? How long have you had it and do you have a lot invested in it?Battery may be dead. Does it power up when you leave it on net power?a few hundred invested in it, not much. Would calling the Toshiba tech line help at all? Any suggestions as to what it might be?Sure, call the tech line, check their web site, and user support forums for an answer. did you just get it? Solve : Brother laser/scanner needs cleaning?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm probably off topic (printer vs computer), but I need help. I am pretty sure the laser/scanner assembly on my Brother MFC 6800 needs cleaning (vertical white lines; have already changed toner and drum unit). I'm not afraid to open anything (almost), but any advice on where to attack (take off top, bottom, back , rt/left side) would be appreciated. Also, when I get to the laser and mirror(s), I assume I should use a q-tip and rubbing alcohol.

Of course, after cleaning I will assemble in reverse ORDER of disassembly, and save any left over parts.

Happy New Year
David Bi only use good soft elk tips for my Q-Tip on my snooker cue. oh yeah and happy new year bro.I started this thing, and I want to end it. This thing is easy to FIX. Brother at 800-276-7746-1-5 said they serviced laser printers, not MFC laser printers, so they connected me to the MFC group at 800-284-4329 and they knew everything I needed to know, which is very little and also about equal to what I already knew.. I had apparently spilled a little toner on a glass strip under the drum unit. Th fix, pull the drum, wipe the 6" x 1/2" glass strip under where the drum was, and wo la, the vertical white lines are HISTORY, and I didn't even unsheath my #2 phillips. Thank God for tech support.
PS Cleaning the Corona wire is also recommended. There is a blue deal on the underside of the drum unit. SLIDE it back and forth about 7 times. THANKSI suspect you know more about your printer than anyone here.

Solve : computer just shuts off?

Answer»

i have just finished building my NEW comp and whenever i power up it GOES through the first screen, and then goes on to the second screen and then says Verifying DMI pool data.......... then it enters down and says like realtek eithernet controller, then it says DHCP: and to the left of DHCP: it has a status BAR, and as the status bar gets to like 3-4 bars the whole comp just shuts off, i thought it might have to do with the DMI, but now im starting to think that it is hardware related. Also on my mother board i have red plastic washers on each screw that connects the mother board to the case.take out the nic cardand then boot it....it maybe irq problem? check the ramsticks are seated PROPERLY in their banks and are COMPATABLE to the mobo? and just to rant why do people like seeing the bios...why not when booting a gif/jpeg image instead..?options open on views as to why people wish to see the bios screen on boot?when my pc boots is displays a nice image ...not the bios screen..?how do you get it to show a jpeg? lolbuy a washing-line washing line? lol

Solve : Seagate 250 GB hard drive functions VERY slowly?

Answer»

I just recently purchased a Seagate 250 GB internal hard drive (8mb/s, 7200 rpm) and installed it as a slave to my main hard drive. Windows recognizes it fine, but the problem is that whenever I try to access the drive (add/remove files, run defragmenter, ETC.) my entire computer practically freezes up and runs very slowly until i cancel the process. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Are you comfortable getting into the BIOS ? ?
If so on your next boot enter the BIOS and check that the new disk is using UDMA. It might have defaulted to PIO mode due to Windows errors which is really slow.
What do you have stored on this drive and how did you prep it before installing ? ? Quote

How is this drive formatted?
Got into Control Panel /System/Hardware/ device manager/then hard drive controller and enable udma for each controller.
Again how did you format it and what format type is the drive using FAT32 or NTFS, and how much data is on the driveAlso it is sometimes overlooked but double check the jumper settings on the master...sometimes they are installed in a new machine with the jumper in the "park" position because this is the only HDD.
It should be master w/slave present or master. Quote

in the device manager there is no box or OPTION that i see for enabling UDMA -- i feel like ive searched EVERYWHERE . my roommate bought a similar seagate hard drive and his came with an installation cd, mine didnt -- so i used his and installed the drivers for the hard drive and then connected the hard drive. everything seemed to go smoothly, the hard drive was easily recognized after the software was put on the computer. the drive is 250 GB, and theres nothing on it ---- I don't know much else about the format type etc. also i looked into the bios and didnt see a whole lot of options / settings relating to my hard drive. any other ideas?this is dan eadfg, i just had to make a new name You seem to have a problem with your initial setup. You say your friend has a similar drive? If his drive is not exactly the same model and type, you may have loaded either the wrong drivers or your setup may be wrong.

Note that 250 GB Seagate is not enough information to be exact. There are several types (SATA, ATA, Ultra ATA, etc.). A list of seagate drives and their technical specs are here: http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/guide/ As you can see, performance, configuration and even cables may be different. Determine the model and type drive you have and compare it to your friend's drive. Are they the same? If not, remove/uninstall your drive and install the correct drivers. This is a good idea regardless.

Installation wizards, drivers and other tools are available for free download from the Seagate Support Site here: http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/utils.html

Copy/backup any files or information you want to save before you reinstall.

You will need the info above and your operating system.

Solve : Erratic starting behaveour?

Answer»

Sir,
My PC set is:
a.. CPU - AMD K62, 450Mhz , 100Mhz FSB
b.. MB - ASUS P5A-B, Super 7
c.. MEMORY - 128 + 32 Mb SD Ram
d.. Graphic card - Trident 3D AGP 9750
e.. Sound Card - Sound Blaster Pci 512
f.. HDD( Primary)- 4.3 GB Fujstu, (slave) 2.1GB Fujstu
g.. PS - AT 250 watt
h.. OS - Windows 2000 Pro + service pack 4.

It was in perfact working condition, until I removed its HDDS for a short time. Now it fails to boot. It is behaving erratic. Most of the time, I don't see any display and some time I see color patterns on the monitor after switching on the computer. The bios display does not reach till detection of IDE devices and freezes before this stage. Sometimes, I hear one long and followed by THREE short beeps. Several times, the beep is normal and display shows the testing of the memory etc before freezing.

I have checked all the devices for correct connections. Power supply voltages are correct. CMOS battery is good as system time is retained. Something wrong with BIOS...??

Please advise...

jawanda56 Make sure you have the hard drives connected properly. If you are using one ribbon for both drives the main drive needs to be at the end. Try switching how you have them connected. Since the freeze-up happens while reading the hard drives I think that the problem is with the hard drives. For Tribert:

Hard disk drives are connected correctly. It seems the problem is not the HDDs. The computer starting sequence does not reach that stage, and if at all it reaches the detection of drive, it tries to boot correctly. I still feel, the problem has something to do with the Bios. Is it possible to reinstall the BIOS?

Any other suggestions...

jawanda56 SO you get VIdeo? or is it wacky? AGP can be tricky, have you got a pci vid card laying around to try?Yes some times it does START off with good video, I have also noticed on boot up when it displays the bois and detects the processor, it used to show AMD K62-450Mhz, but now there appears AMD K62-495Mhz. Sorry no pci video card lying around to try.

I waited several days for some good tips to come. Finally, dismentled the complete CPU. removed all components and reassembled. Cleaned all parts (although they were already CLEAN). Rearranged the IDE devices as per Primery/Secondary/Master/Slave order. The computer started well and revived. I'm using it since over a week. No problems, except, it looses display when some demanding application is being used.

Thanks u all for the help...

Solve : problem starting up?

Answer»

I recently had problems with my dvd drive so i went in my computer and fiddled AROUND with the IDE cables with my dvd drive and the hdd. I unplugged them from the motherboard and i think i tried switching the cables. I returned the cables to the ir normal places but now when i turn the computer on, the monitor just says check signal. Also, the beep that usually occurs when i turn it on does not happen. Is there any WAY i can FIX this?Monkeying around inside a case is not a good idea unless you know what you are doing.

That being said, put the hard drive on IDE primary channel and the optical drives on the secondary IDE channel. Start the MACHINE and go into BIOS/setup and see if they are recognized.

If it doesn't work think carefully. What else did you PLAY with?

the hard drive is on the primary and the dvd drive is on the secondary but it still does not work.
the two IDE cables the connect the hard drive and the dvd drive to the motherboard are all that i messed around with
the monitor does not get a signal from the computer, but i dont think there is anything wrong with the monitor so could there be something wrong with the motherboard?Did you swap PATA flat ribbon cables when the PC was powered on?

If not; are you certain that the red stripe is aligned with pin one?

Solve : Is it my video card??

Answer»

I have been playing WoW for about a year now and recently have goten horable lag and soft freezes. I was told to just get a new VIDEO card but i dont wanna waste that cash if thats not the problem and it just turns out that i need more ram or something. If it does turn out that i need a new component(most likely)I have 300-350usd to spend. I have also heard that certain video cards will only run with certain computers if that is the problem? My specs are

Processor:Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4CPU 2.40GHz
Memory:510MB RAM
and im useing a NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440General Stuff: I assume your system works good for non-gaming? Otherwise, your system SEEMS about right for most normal applications. Gaming adds its own significant processing requirements.

If you really want serious gaming capabilities, you should upgrade your RAM and your video card, but then your processing speed is slower than most current gaming SYSTEMS, so you will lag in that department.

Is it worthwhile to continue upgrading vs a new system? Your call. One thing is certain, game developers will still demand the latest, biggest, fastest or whatever to be competitive.

The money you have to spend is more than ENOUGH to find a good median-priced video processor, but not enough for the very high end. Google for your PC and model and you'll find dozens of possibilities.

Specific WoW: These are the specific requirements for Warcraft -
Recommended Requirements:
Intel Pentium IV 1.5 GHz or AMD XP 1500+
512 MB RAM
64 MB 3D graphicscard with Vertex and Pixel Shader capabilitiy, such as an NVIDIA Geforce FX5700 class card or above
Broadband Internet connection
Two-button scroll-wheel mouse
For a complete list of supported 3D cards: http://www.blizzard.com/support/wow

Your video card does not seem to provide pixelshaders support for this game, which may account for some of your problems. See here for more info: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14&p_created=1096408407&p_sid=wOxjbKrh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MyZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPXNlYXJjaF9mbmwmcF9wcm9kX2x2bDE9JnBfY2F0X2x2bDE9JnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9Z2Vmb3JjZTI*&p_li

Solve : strange things are happening?

Answer»

i just built a new system and it will not POST the mainboard is brand new and i am using the intergrated video CARD. Also, the cd rom and the hard drives work fine until you hook up the ide ribbons then they wont spin does anyone have a solution.

my motherboard is a msi and i have a p4 1.6 ghz processor [smiley=huh.gif]Make sure the ribbons are connected properly and jumpers on the rear of the drives are set correctly. Long side of cable to mainboard, #1 PIN marking on mainboard matching the red stripe on the cable. Red stripe on the cable facing the power connectors on the CD and hard drive. End connector master, middle connector slave (jumpers on drives set accordingly).

Some BIOS require that you go into the drive setup section and hit a button for the drives to be automatically detected.

Any messages on the SCREEN or beep codes when you start the computer? What power supply are you using and which msi motherboardMake sure your HDD's is hooked to the Primary IDE, and the CD to secondary, some mobo's are picky about that one. and what do you expect to do with 1.6ghz? my dad has a 2.6 celeron D and cant do much, so if your for GAMING i would advise atleast a 3.0.

Solve : not being able to read hard drive?

Answer»

Well, the problem is SIMPLE, when i try to turn on my computer it detects all my 1.5 g of memory, my cd rom, and my cd burner. doesnt detect and doesnt detect my HD. It is not the HD that is messed up because i tried 2 other new HD's and still would get no detection. It happened to me once before, LIKE 3 days ago and all i did was remove all but 1 512 and it worked. Now i tired it again, same thing; wouldnt read my HD. All the CABLES are HOOKED up CORRECTLY and are plugged in tightly. Hopefully i can get some advice soon because i am in need of my computer right now. (This is being typed from a friends computer.) Thanks for the help and hope to have some feedback soon.

Solve : software compatibilty?

Answer»

Hi! all, does anybody know if oem win xp is only compatible with just ORIG. harddrive or weather it affects other pc components. I.E./ I would like to try putting H.D.D into another pc (that is stuffed) to make a workable pc from both. If it was loaded on one hard drive and you put that hard drive into another computer with different components you should not expect it to work. Some knowledgable people can SOMETIMES get this to work with some tweaks, but don't count on it.

A fresh format and reinstall is always best. The only reason people don't do this is they

a) don't understand why not to,

or

b) don't have a legal Windows CD, and don't want to buy onejordieh ...... As far as I know , the only differance between XP OEM and XP RETAIL ......is the licence fee .....and the level of support you can get from Microsoft .... It's all about dollars . The operating system is the same . The reason it may not work in another system is as GX1_Man has stated ......
If you have the XP disk and the product key code....set the boot ORDER to cd rom ...1st boot and put the disk in the cd-drive and reboot the machine XP will load from there .

dl65 If you're determined to MOVE the drive even at the risk of re-installing XP then only connect minimum hardware and start in safe mode on the 1st boot.

Then remove all the old computers devices from the Device Manager & re-boot letting XP auto detect and install the new hardware.

Then connect any extra hardware you have, boot up & LET XP auto detect and install that too.

Follow the reasoning?
FEEDBACK on this would be much appreciated.

hi there , please can any one help me out

i have been offered a hp computer built in with a dvd rom and dvd/cd rewriter. i can read dvds or cds frm dvd rom drive but frm the dvd/cd rewriter i can only read dvds and it does not recognise any CD or even burning cd/dvd frm it.
i have checkd the driver, seems to be ok but when comes to burning it does not recognise the black cd or dvds nor reading cd.
please , I'm really stck don't know what to do next....

thanks , yr help will be much appreciatedWhich operating system are you using? Have you tried updating the drivers from the DRIVE manufacturer's website?

FlameI am using windows xp home EDITION, i already tried to up date it but IZ running d current highest version. i also tried to uninstall the drivers and then re-boot it for window to re-instal it automatically but no SUCCESS still, remains the same . also tried d drive out frm another pc, it seems to be ok... but m stuck don't know what to do nxt.
thaknsAre the drives jumpered correctly - one as master and the other as slave? Did it used to work and just quit working? Is either of these drives a new addition to that system?yes they R correctly jumpered, master-slave, i'm not sure if it used to work or not coz i got it frm a friend but i believe that it never worked coz he had use of it. and they are not new addition to the system. they were originally built in.
thanksSometimes the optics system just dies, but the light will come on and the drive will open and close, which is the mechanical system. If it is > 3 months old (and it is probably much more) you may just need to head on over to newegg.com - Less than $40 to solve the problem.well, i believe that the drive is ok bcos i tried it out another PC and it worked but just not working in the original PC, which i don't know either the problem comes frm the configuration or what , i cant use my brain any more
thanksGood luck with your brain.

Win98 does not work on NTFS systems. If you try to reload Win98 you will have to do so by formatting the drive. You will surely loose everything then.

You can download XP bootdisks from www.bootdisk.com (I think it takes 6 of them) and from that you could probably get into recovery console or a command prompt you could use.

If this does not resolve it, do you have a legal XP CD to reinstall everything? If you need to save files from there first, there is a way to do that.

Solve : Major monitor resolution and colour issue?

Answer»

Ok, here's the problem. I have a STANDARD Dell Plug and Play monitor which has been running fine for 3 years now. My GRAPHICS card is a PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 (128mb).

I turn on my PC this morning to see a bubble on the taskbar saying my resolution and colour quality are all very low. The resolution has gone down to 640x480 and the colour quality is 4 bit. I can change it back to 800x600 (4bit), but when i try to change either the colour quality on ANY resolution, or put the resolution higher than 800x600, and then click 'apply', the screen turns black for a second or two, and nothing has changed. I still get the little box saying "your desktop has been reconfigured" etc etc. but nothing has changed! im still left with 640x480 on 4 bit quality, and HARDLY any decent games or applications can run on that!

im very grateful for any HELP. [email protected]Download & install the latest video drivers from the manufacturer's website. Here's a link. Just fill in the blanks:

Solve : Black Moniter Lines?

Answer»

Hi, my name is mike, i'm new to the site. Well i had something happen to me today, and its really werid. I was playing a game on the internet (quake) and before i was playing it was fine. But when i got off there appeared to be SMALL black LINES that GO across the screen on a white background. For example, if i go into Microsoft word, and type a document, the screen looks fine. But when i type something... a black line goes across the screen and gets darker with each key pressed. The more you type, the darker it gets, and the bar is only as high as the text. I've taken my video card out and cleaned it. and messed with the video card REFRESH rate, i dont know what it is. Also, like on aol, the bright yellows and greens are so bright, that it hurts ur eyes to LOOK at them. If someone could help me it would be great. I even tried going back a week with quick restore. Thanks

Mikewhat is your monitors refresh rate? type dxdiag to test graphics...what ii your operating system and ram used...Have you tested your monitor on another computer? If i was would i would just perform a system check in case you havent picked up something whilst playing Quake 2

Do them both.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Highly recommended second Online Malware Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/thx ill TRY it as soon as possible because i was about to format my pc thx once again
and ill notify if it workedAre you using spyware/adware/virus protection routinely? It may save you from a premature reformat in the future.yeah i have microsoft anti spyware and i do run scans normally.......also i did the two scans but unfortunatly i still get the send error report or dont send error report error, so if there is any other way to stop or disable that error can yu plz tell meIf MS Antispy is all you are using you probably have MANY other problems. Use the programs mentioned earlier and post back.i tried a couple of times and still i get that error oh yea and also i have mcfee virus scan 2006i just did the panda virus scan again and this time i didnt get any sign of viruses or spywares
And with ewido as suggested?yea i did them both
What program(s) are generating the error, and are there any other details we need to know?the problem usally generates when im useing alot of memory for example when i play a game called knights online it an error comes up which says that the progam needs to shut down....also if im on the internet the send error report or dont send error report error comes up....oh yea in my pc i have a 128mb and another 256mb my 256 is not properly detected by my pc so if i use too MUCH memory it will restart but i dont think that, that is the problem that triggers the error... Why would you think this is unimportant? I think it the most likely CAUSE. If the hardware is not right why would you expect anyhing to WORK?

Games are memory intensive. Download memtest (free at www.memtest86.com and check each stick of RAM individualy, then both together. Let each test run a few hours, then post back with your findings. I bet the exact error message (which you have not yet given) would confirm this as well.

Solve : Monitor freguecy issue?

Answer»

I have an emachines computer that i got new in 2004, itg has been having some virus and other isssues lately, but i think i will be able to resolve them once i get an external ahrdrive to load all the music file i have on there and do a sysytem restore. the problem is that recently i was tryin to fix a resolution issue and the frequency of the montor got changed. whenever i turn the computer on now, the regular load screen comes up, bu after that it goes to a black screen whhere the message "frequency out of range" comes up. i can't do anything without seeing the computer, so i can't fix the other ISSUES, any advice?Boot into Safe Mode by PRESSING F8 repeatedly at the end of POST (power on self-test) - before it gets to the blank/black screen.

This will start you with the default resolution and VIDEO settings.

Go into your display properties and reset your video to a known acceptable scan rate or auto.

You should now have working display when you reboot.

I'm assuming you have onboard video and are using Windows. If you are using a separate display card, the above may not work.

Dellthanks, a will try that this EVENING, i am using windows XP and have onboard vis=deo i believe, ios the time i should press f8 while the windows icon is showing and the blue line is running across the screen? If you SEE windows, you are too late. You must hit it before that. Don't be afraid to hit it several times, the computer will beep when it has had enough.thanks for the info, I solved the monitor problem by doing a sysytem restore from safe mode, when other options there didnt' work

Solve : floppy drive trouble with XP....?

Answer»
Hi I sure hope someone can assist me with this minor prob I am having with my new PC running XP Home....
I have a floppy drive which is not working...... . It is not listed in 'my computer' but is listed in the device manager and status is 'working properly'..... :-/!
I have checked the connectors are all in place & the only thing I haven't doen is check the BIOS to see if it is configured............(I have only done this in WME but XP looks a bit different...... :-?)!
Would appreciate any help.....
In the Device Manager, right-click on the drive, and select Update Drivers. (You must be connected to the Internet) See if that helps Is the led always on?
I had same problem after replacing the robbon cable to a round cable.
Cable can connect to device in either direction but only one is right.
try flipping the cable, especially if the light is always on. :-?Hi.....no there is no light on the floppy drive.
I also tried updateing the driving as was suggested but even though I was connected to the net i get a mesage saying 'windows already has the best driver installed' :-? :-? :-?guyfawkes........ I would go into the bios and make sure the correct drive info is enabled ......... 1.44 floppy drive .... You may have missed it when you set up your bios initially.

dl65 Has it ever worked?Hi!
No the drive din't work when I got the PC a week ago......!
Anyway, as suggested I braved the BIOS & it said floppy 'A' drive enabled :-? and also floppy 'B' drive not installed..............so I changed that and hey presto I now have 2 floppy drives - 'A' & 'B' :-?! (Neither of which existed b4...)! On start up Windows 'found new hardware' !
HOWEVER.......floppy drive 'B' works but if i click on the 'A' drive it asks for a disk to be inserted (even though there is one in already.....)!
Is it worth disabling the 'A' drive now or leave them both now that at least I have a working drive!

Another question is on this new PC I only have one DVD/CD drive.....If I remove the cCD copier from my old (KIDS) PC will I be able to copy my audio DISCS??

Thanks guysIf you have a DVD/CDRW combo drive you don't need to add anything, although it would be faster to have a a2 drive setup. What model drive is in there now? Most new PC's have combo drives. On my new PC I have a DVD RW.....a single unit.
My old PC has the LG DVD and underneath a CD Copier :-?.
I assume I cannot at present make copies without first copying to the hard drive? :-/That is correct *censored* it is not a problem or an effort with Nero or other burninig SOFTWARE. It just creates a temporary file, then you put in the blank CDR and it takes it from there. You can either automatically delete the3 file after burning or save it if you need to copy it again. I have machines with one and two drives. The result is the same.

you need one with a least 128 mb >OPERATING system or more ram and a p3 at least...the hard drive size can depend on what you wish to use it for...and what you wish the laptop to be used for gaming/data storage mvsic video wiffy...the things i would look for is SLOWNESS in booting from the hard drive plus noisy in operation and and a lcd thats distored /burnt looking and does the battery hold its power after two days..and a good make...like acer/toshiba/fujisui/siemans..dont take my word for it here is a guide>http://www.laptops-guide.com/I'd mainly need it to store files on, shift files from and to my external HDD (USB 2.0), use Microsoft Office and perhaps Photoshop and/or other photo editing tools. But photo editing isn't a requirement since I'd prefer to do that on my Desktop.

It doesn't have to be fast at all, as long as it's got enough processing power to do the things described above.

Quote

the things i would look for is slowness in booting from the hard drive plus noisy in operation

Would that indicate a problem or just something that could possibly be annoying?

I'll have a look-see at the webpage you posted the link to. Much obliged.noisy hard drive normally indicate a bearing failure?and you wish to even CONSIDER this>you even wish to use one of these instead>http://www.datamind.co.uk/templates/frmTemplateP.asp?CatalogID=710&Zoom=Yes&SubFolderId=82I donot think I will require one of those.

Any more tips on what to look out for when buying a second hand laptop? Quote

I've been using laptops longer than desktops. Laptops are hindered primarily by their slow hard drives, 4800rpm or 5400rpm. 7200rpm 2.5" notebook drives were recently introduced.

To meet your requirements, a PII-300 or greater with 256MB RAM, a 14.4" TFT screen 1024 x 768, would be more than adequate. Altering screen resolution from "non-native" results in a slightly fuzzy image. USB 2.0 and ethernet did not show up until P4 laptops. Some laptops do not use mobile processors, they use desktop processors. They get extremely hot and have short battery life. Look for Mobile Pentium or Pentium-M.
Any laptop manufactured 1999 or later will meet most of these specs. Compare prices here: http://www.dellauction.com

Would there be an European Dellaction website? Those Laptops seem awfully... Opening bids at 9$?

Solve : XP Lock-up when using DVD?

Answer»

When I put a DVD movie in my DVD DRIVE and close it it locks up and I have to restart the computer, if I put the dvd in during start-up or restart with it in the drive everything is fine. Any ideas
TIAis the dvd a copy?is it clean and not scratched...is there any other problem with your pc...and i take it this is WINXP...It's XP Pro and it does it with the orginals and the computer is fine and the disks are fine. It's FUNNY but I had it happen on the PC before this one but not as often it also had XP Pro but different brand DVD and DVD Burner. I know have the DVD's open to Win DVD 4 and that seems to help, it pauses like it is going to lock up and then Win DVD starts up and AWAY it goes.how old is your dvd player and does this situation arise on just this one dvd or others?
if it's just this disk then it's probally scratched or damaged
if it happens on all your dvds then maybe the lens inside your dvd player is covered in dust and then needs a clean
also if the dvd player is very old you may need some decoders in order for the disks to work
just a idea you know hehe
make sure also the disc you are trying to play is actually in DVD format as some drives are not designed to play SVCD or Div X format
hope this solves your situation

Solve : Need help!! Cannot find Hard drive on startu?

I NEED help. Upon startup, my computer gives a message that says "hard drive not found". I have a pentium III with windows 98. How can I fix this?At what point does this error message appear.http://members.cox.net/joemurphy/Hard%20Drive%20NR.htmConfigure your Hard Disk Drive properly in the BIOS and see to it that all cables and jumpers are in the right place. We have replaced the hard drive with a known GOOD one, we have replaced the cable and used a different power plug. We checked the jumpers on the hard drive. The only thing we don't KNOW how to do is check the hard drive in the bios.
We were rebooting the gateway computer with the Western digital floppy, it would check for the hard drive and not find it.
How do we check the bios? Do we f1 when prompted? If so then what do we look for and what do we do when we find it?
Thanks,

Search the Nvidia

website to see what mainboards are best for that videocard. If there is none present, E-mailing technical support may be your best option.

You only require one Power Supply UNIT. I would not go below 400 watts if you are looking to build a High End system.

Solve : Frequent BIOS resetting?

Answer»

First, some background. I recently posted a problem about adding memory to my wife's IBM 300GL. It wouldn't boot after that.

Thanks to a helpful suggestion, I removed the new memory, reset the BIOS, and everything was fine.

New situation: After that was WORKED out, I installed a better CD-Rom drive in the same MACHINE. Darned if it didn't exhibit exactly the same symptoms. Everything seemed OK, but it wouldn't boot. So I reset the BIOS again, and just LIKE before, everything was fine.

I figured what the heck, and put the new memory back in. I reset the BIOS, and this time, it worked fine.

So bottom line with this machine seems to be, every time I install something, sneeze or look at it funny, I have to reset the BIOS. And after doing that, it runs like a champ.

My question is: Does this sound NORMAL? I've installed lots of upgrades in various computers over the years, and until these recent incidents, I had never reset a BIOS even once. In the past few days, I've done it repeatedly. Why is this necessary? Is it an indication of some other problem? you may need to flash the bios?upgrade it in laymans terms...What if you use the Fail safe settings rather than the default settings?
Hello again.

I checked, and the latest BIOS is already installed.

I don't see an option for "fail safe" settings. I've tried reapplying the default settings, but that doesn't seem to help.

I've found that after I reset the BIOS, everything stays OK until I power the machine down completely. Then I need to clear and reset the BIOS before it will start. In the BIOS setup screen, there are pointers to two things: Non-parity memory (which is what is has, and is a setting that I can't change anyway); and the date/time.

I always save the settings before exiting, but after powering down, it always asks for them again.

Is the date/time prompt a clue? Could it just be a matter of replacing the battery?

Once again, thanks in advance! Quote

Is the date/time prompt a clue? Could it just be a matter of replacing the battery?

Yup. Cmos battery is dead. When you power off all CMOS info is lost. Quote
Is the date/time prompt a clue? Could it just be a matter of replacing the battery?

Yup. Cmos battery is probably dead. When you power off all CMOS info is lost. The problem is still persisting, and it's getting really frustrating.

It has reached the point where every time I power down the system, I have to clear the BIOS to get it to restart. Once it does, it runs fine ... until the next time it's powered down.

I replaced the CMOS battery. I re-flashed the BIOS with the latest version. I've checked every setting. I removed the new memory, which seemed to be the thing that touched this off in the first place. Still no luck.

I've run out of ideas! Raptor, in an earlier reply, you referred to "fail safe settings." I'm not sure what those would be. There's no mention of them anywhere in the setup WINDOWS, nor in the manual.

The symptoms, to summarize: After I power down, and try to restart, it runs for a moment or two, then halts. If I clear the BIOS, it prompts for two things: non-parity memory (which I can't change); and date/time. The date/time it displays is always correct, but it seems to want to be updated anyway. Changing it doesn't affect the behavior. Next time I try to power up, I have to go through the same steps again.

Help ... !
what operating are you using it may or may not be an issue...is it win95...you say you have to reset the bios when powering down...do you mean that when you re-boot you get the post screen? Quote
...

I replaced the CMOS battery.

If I clear the BIOS, it prompts for two things: non-parity memory (which I can't change); and date/time. The date/time it displays is always correct, but it seems to want to be updated anyway.

Since you replaced the battery and the date/time are correct and everything else is lost, this tells me that the real-time clock is working, but the CMOS memory is not working fully.

It could be that the CMOS memory gets corrupted everytime. See this: http://www.pcguide.com/ts/x/comp/mbsys/bios_Corrupted.htm

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/bios/compCMOS-c.html
To merlin_2:

The operating system is Windows 98.

What happens is this: When I power up, I can hear the computer start to come to life. After 5 or 10 seconds, it completely, totally stops. The screen is blank. The fan stops running. The hard drive doesn't move. Everything comes to an absolutely halt.

I then clear the BIOS, by moving a jumper. I power back on, and the system starts. All the BIOS settings are OK, and nothing has changed in the system since last time. However, the BIOS setup screen prompts me for memory type, and time/date. I simply re-save the settings, power down, put the jumper back in the right position, and power up. I get past the post screen, Windows starts and everything runs fine.

But the next time I power up, I have to go through the same procedure again.

I had hoped that replacing the battery would take care of this, but it made no difference. And again, when I'm prompted to go into the BIOS setup screen, all settings are fine. The time/date is correct, even though I'm prompted to re-save it. The hard drive settings, video settings, etc., are all OK.

I'm pursuing the tips on the help screens that Computer Commando provided, in hopes that will lead to something. So far, nothing seems promising, but I'm still working at it.I've solved this problem. I thought I'd post the final solution in case someone with a similar problem reads this thread in the future.

First, all the advice given previously was excellent. Before doing anything else, try all those steps. (When you replace the CMOS battery, take the old one with you to Radio Shack ... that would have saved me 15 minutes of driving.)

Read the links that were mentioned, because there are several good tips in those.

If all that fails, as it did for me, go to the manufacturer's website and read everything, and I do mean everything, they say about your model. In this case, it was an IBM. There are hundreds of IBM machines, but I was able to find quite a few pages relating to this particular model. And, on one obscure page, was a clue. It turns out that in certain circumstances, the BIOS defaults to a certain processor speed. I checked the BIOS, and found the processor speed was set incorrectly. When I fixed that, I pretty much had the problem solved.

I was also able to determine that the new DIMM was faulty. That's what set off this string of events in the first place, and resetting the BIOS seemed to help, but the incorrect processor speed setting was making other weird symptoms and masking the real problem.

Hope this helps someone, and in the meantime, thanks again, everyone, for the tips. This forum is great!

Solve : COM 1 in Device Manager - dialing up COM 3?

Answer»

I may have the TOUGHEST question of the day. I'm not very computer literate and will try to pose my problem in a way it makes sense so that I may get some help. Our ISP is a dial-up service; worked fine on Monday. However, last night dial-up says something to the effect that com port 3 is already in use or not working properly. When I checked the ports in the device MANAGER, it shows only com port 1 and that it is working properly. Since I am not writing from my home pc for obvious reasons, if anyone can help me or needs more info to help... PLEASE... I'll do what I can. Thanks!

P.S. Am using an emachine with Windows XP on it.Hmmm... I imagine you tried restarting the computer? What happens if you go to my computer / control panel / printers and other hardware / phone and modem options.... Click on the modem tab, highlight your modem click on properties. Click the diagnostics tab and the query modem button. If the computer is able to communicate with the modem, it may be an issue with your dial-up SOFTWARE (UNINSTALL and reinstall or DELETE your dial-up connection and try creating a new one). Do you use a manually configured dial-up connection or your ISPs dial-up software from a disk or download? If the computer is unable to communicate with the modem... Might try uninstalling the modem in the device manager and reinstalling it after a restart.I did try and restart the computer - even did the thing that allows me to go back to an earlier restore and that didn't work. It has been a while, but I don't think my dial-up connection was done by disk or download - I believe I manually installed it. I didn't query the modem button, but I did query the "port" one and it said the device (COM port 1) was working correctly; however, the problem when I try and dial up is showing COM port 3 is busy. When I get home, I will try both of your suggestions - query the modem and delete and re-install my dial-up information.

Thank you!Wild:

COM 1 and COM 3 use the same IRQ. (That's geek speak for you whatever device is using communication port number one is keeping your modem from working.) What is using COM 1?

Best regards,
Doc

Solve : Questions about networking...?

Answer»

Hi,

Have absolutely no experience at all with networking.

After some upgrades, have almost enough "leftovers" to build a second system. Would LIKE to make it a system for my home theater in the other room, with the ability to access audio / video files from this computer. I already have a DSL modem plugged into the on-board networking on this computer.

I tried to do some reading on networks, but it's pretty confusing stuff for me!!! Am I correct in assuming that I can achieve my goal by adding a second network card (have a spare) to this computer and using a crossover cable to the other computer? Would I be able to access my DSL connection on the other computer if I bridge the two network connections in XP on this computer? Will the network connection be fast enough to stream DVD quality video? Is there a BETTER way?

Thanks MUCH for any HELP!!! Know it's alot of questions!!!

Royit should be easier if you say you have 2 network cards to just make a small network. A switch is inexpensive these days maybe running like $30 for a descent one.

That way you can put your DSL to the switch and run both your pc's on the network. And is if its a totally different room this would be a better choice.A router would serve your purpose better than a switch. Wired would be better and more reliable than wireless for streaming but wireless should be OK for internet sharing. A router also has the advantage of providing a hardware firewall. Thanks!!!

So, using a router would allow both of my computers to share my DSL connection and share files with each other?

Any suggestions on which router to buy? Know I've seen threads about certain makes / models being troublesome.

Thanks again!!!
Royroyphil345...... I use a D-link with 3 machines connected to it and have never had any problems . All you need is an ethernet card in each pc ( which is probably already installed and your good to go .)

dl65 Great... Thanks!!!

The guy at my CompUSA also said D-Link was the way to go when I was shopping for a network card (which as it turned out, I didn't need).

The night I rebuilt my computer, there was a DSL outage all night long 'till about noon the next day in my area. 1st outage I've ever experienced. All the lights on the modem were on, just couldn't connect to the internet. Since I just rebuilt the computer, I was sure the built-in networking on my new mainboard was to blame. Went to go buy a network card just before service was restored. Came home, popped it in, and it worked. I was happy. Found out later about the outage. Built-in networking works just fine now!!! LOL

I still need to return the network card. Looks like I'll exchange it towards a D-Link router and some cables.BTW Dlink is not a router its a switch..

And router is way more expensive than router which will do the same and your Os hoping you have Xp has a firewall installed which you should be fine Quote

BTW Dlink is not a router its a switch..

And router is way more expensive than router which will do the same and your Os hoping you have Xp has a firewall installed which you should be fine

D-Link makes routers, switches, NIC's and LOTS of other things. And I don't understand any point you're trying to make in the second paragraph. Any OS can use a router. A router is a hardware firewall as well.racealoot... Quote
BTW Dlink is not a router its a switch
I don't wish to give you a bad time ....racealoot But D-Link do most certainly produce routers ........ I use one all the time .....and know of many others who also have D-Link routers. So in the future , when offering advice ......engage brain before bursting into print or do a quick google to be sure the info you are offering is correct.
I believe what you were trying to suggest was that a hub is less costly than a router .......however a hub doesn't offer the firewall protection that the router does.

dl65 Well maybe i was mistaken but dont you think for what the person is trying to use it for , its more suitable for him /her to use a swtich or hub??Just trying to give the best option and Xp does use firewall but its software. but then again i was just saying WHATS best for price.

/shrug my badI know some Linksys routers are switching so you get full dl and linksys is better than dlink anyway full DL? Switch? Router? Switching router? I'm lost!!!
Full dl means full downloading. If I can remember correctly, a hub will divide the bandwith between all computers on it plus it broadcasts all packets to every node. I think a router also divide unless it is a switching router which gives every computer full bandwidth. And a router will only send an incoming packet to the computer the packet is destined for. I am sure this is not accurate but it is what I remember from ELN class.Check this site out. It does a pretty good job of explaining it all: http://www.asante.com/support/routerguide/faqs/hardwared.htmlThanks Tadracket!!!

That info should help a bit when I start looking for a hub / router. Looks like maybe I'm looking for a switching router now. No wonder starting a network seemed complicated to me... it is!!!

I will check out that link also.

Thanks again to everyone for their input!!!

Solve : Mic Issues?

Answer»

CH.com guru's... I am at your mercy!! :-/

Ive been having some serious issues with my MIC as of late, and no clue as to why. The problem is that my mic is "always on", meaning it always is picking up sound.. and it doesn't pick up sound well at all. (Ie, I have to eat my mic in order for people to hear me).

I have checked the connection and its fine. I ran the audio wizard and it shows everything as fine as well, the mic picks up sound... just barely though. I have all the boxe's unchecked in the volume control box and the mic is turned up full tilt...

Any thoughts? Your help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Jyou have failed to tell us the operating system...not to worry...have you tried the voice test for your mike..go to the control panel this for win9x users click the sounds and media icon...click the tab for voice...OS: Windows XP (SP2)

Voice test for my mic? Yeah, as I said I have ran all the wizards and it shows everything as "ok." The Mic picks up sound, just barely though and ALL the time.Did you insert the Microphone into the CORRECT plug?

Does your soundcard show any errors in the Device Manager tab?

Right click My Computer - Manage - Device ManagerYep, Mic's in the right spot.

I checked the divice manager as you asked, but there are 8 diffrent things listed under there. They are as follows:

 • Audio Codecs
 • Creative Game Port
 • Creative SB Live! series
 • Legacy Audio Drivers
 • Media Control Devices
 • Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
 • Video Codecs

If I right Click and go to properties, they all say the "device is working properly."

Are there any advanced things I could do?In audio controls there should be an "advanced" button on the mic setting. Click on it and check the box for "mic boost". If your mic doesn't have a switch to turn it off and on you need ANOTHER mic. They do pick up sound as long as they are left on.I had this same problem, i used the audio wizard in MSN messanger to try to fix it, but like you i had to eat my mic before anyone heard me. My solution i BOUGHT a new mic and it has worked fine EVER since, so i think it could me the mic itself.
