Solve : hard drive partition issues?

Answer»

i have been giveing different distro of linux a TRY in the past few months. i have two hdd's, hda(200gb) with 150gb ntfs on hda1, and 50gb for linux on hda2..., on hdb1, i have a 6gb fat32. after my failed freebsd install, my hda2 is messed up. when i run qtparted on knoppix its scans hdb fine, but give a critical error on hda and crashes the progam. when running knoppix-installer on root, under partioning part, it gives error that hda is read only, and i cant do anything. im not sure what to do. but i have important INFO on hda1 that i really cant loose, i still have the freebsd BOOTLOADER, but it only works for xp and it scares me a bit.

Ive run windows98 fdisk, and the resultes dont match up:

partiton - format ------mbytes - ----usage
1 ---------- NTFS -------18925 ---------30%
2 --------- EXT-DOS --- 44461 --------70%

total disk space 63402

the ntfs partition SHOLD be 150bg, not 19, if ext-dos is my messed up linux partition it shold be around 50, well 44 is close. but still

i also ran the fedora core installer, and it also gave back an error:

"Invaild Partition table on /dev/hda - wrong signature - 0"

that cant be good. i can reinstall windows if i must, but i have like 20gb of stuff i really cant loose. unless anyone knows how it fix the partition table, or a way i can create anther partion just to store data then delete it later. i dunno, i want to get going with linux again....any SUGGESTIONS?http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000 and this if you need it>http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html   we the amount of h/drives you have it may better to install lynx on a separate drive?

Solve : emachine move?

Answer»

I just moved and unfortunately the movers packed my Emachine E714 and now the light on the tower turns on and the fans turn on but it just won't boot up. What's up with that? Are you getting any errors on screen or beep CODES?I am getting nothing on the screen, only the check your video connections. It makes one small beep and that's it.
VandeDoes that particular e MACHINE have a viedo card in it? Double check you video cable, make sure it is FITTED well.
In addition, carefully check the connector pins on your VGA cable to your monitor (with POWER off).  These pins can be bent easily when assembling the PC.  As above, if they are okay, replug the cable into your PC and make sure it is firmly seated.

Dellvande......I think that possibly the move has unseated one or more of the components..... I WOULD open up the case and carefully reseat all the cards and the ram .......
Check to be sure the IDE cables are all plugged in good and tight and then make sure any other plugged in cables are plugged in all the way .....( fan connections , front panel connection and the like )

Hopefully thats the issue.

Solve : pluged in and not working?

Answer»

hi, i have made a new PC from scratch, everything is plugged in but it does not seem to work when i try the bower button, i have a optical mouse pluged into it which lights up when i turn the POWER on, but the power button does not work at all, i have plugged my power button into the RIGHT part of the motherboard and that does not do anything still, i have also tryed puttin the power button in the reset slots HDD and all the others, this still does not allow me to actually start up my pc. if anyone could help me PLEASE send me a E-mail at either [email protected] or [email protected]I can post this much for you, if you just randomly started connecting you power button to every header on the board and trying it, whether it worked before or not, you could have very well destroyed your mother board.

And if you CHECK 'notify of replies' when posting, the forum auto emails you if someone has replied to your post. If I am wrong, someone please correct me.Did you install the lpso devices? Quote

?Your system has been assembled incorrectly or something is broken.

If you fix it, it should work.

If you need further help, at least tell us what you're putting together and how (motherboard, operating system, case, assembly procedures, etc.).

If you have the assembly procedures, tell us at what step it adviced you to begin plugging in your power to all available motherboard pins.

Also, make sure you keep the motherboard receipt/warranty paperwork.  You're gonna need it if you continue to randomly hook up connections.

Solve : Keyboard keys?

Answer»

I was enjoying a beverage when i spilt the fizzy juice all over the keyboard.

Yes before any one comments i am a idiot.

Anyway.....

The Backspace key and the Big SHIFT key have become very stuck. Well they move but its slowly.

i was wondering since juice went in there and it didn't short out, (i dont know how they work) would it be safe to WASH the sticky dried juice out with water?

thanks

R0SSIt's bad netiquette to call someone an idiot.
(Unless you put a couple of   after it   )
Mate, Ive heard of people putting keyboards under the shower to clean them out.
I'd hold it upside down & squirt it with one of those spray bottles filled with clean water then dry it out with a cool hair dryer while it's still upside down.ok mate.

Thanks for the info.

I shall do that

R0SSR0SS..... I would be inclined to open up the keyboard , and wipe it down inside using rubbing alcohol and those cotton swabs on the sticks .........I would repeat this until the sticky keys operate freely ....then let sit for several days and REASSEMBLE .

Cheers

dl65  right ok i ill see to doing that.

R0SSFrom my experience with alcohol and keyboards i have never saved one yet. I have tried the hairdryer only to find that after a few days the keyboard decides to not to work again. I have lost 3 keyboards due to Beer.thanks for the advise ok ill just use water then and do the first idea,

R0SSIf you haven't already taken your keyboard apart, don't. Most well built keyboards have a
membrane that covers the switches under the keys (cheapies might not). Fill a spray bottle
with alchohol and with the keyboard upside down, spay the sticky keys generously
with alchohol. Then use the cool hairdryer to dry it out. (Shake the keyboard
gently to remove any alchohol that might be inside the keycaps.) The keycaps might
also be REMOVABLE. If they are, that is the best alternative.Ok.

Thanks for all the advise,

With the Backspace, I just tapped the *censored* out of it and its no longer sticky lol

that could be a short term fix till i get round to cleaning it all out tomorrow.

R0SS

I have lost 3 keyboards due to Beer.

ROTFLMAO ........  Beer isnt the type of  alcohol I was refering to.The upside-down-alcohol-spray bottle technique is a good one.  I'll just add that denatured (good-natured) alcohol is better than the normally available isopropol (rubbing)alcohol for this.  Denatured alcohol leaves less of a residue when dried, and in a pinch makes a fairly good martini (too strong though).

Disassembling-your-keyboard technique will allow you to better clean the membrane and any other component you might miss.  You will be AMAZED at the number of screws it takes to hold 2 pieces of plastic together though.  I always have a few left over when I finish.

Solve : Computer Restarts When I Plug Into USB 2.0?

Answer»

HELP!

I just built my own computer with a Just4PC Case from TigerDirect (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=674553&CatId=0).  The case includes two front USB 2.0 ports.  I plugged the usb into my MSI motherboard as the instructions said.  Everytime I plug something into one of these ports the computer restarts itself.  I have tried two different iPods & a Kodak camera.  After the restart the items work sucessfully.  Are they drawing too much power to begin with??

CAN ANYONE HELP ME??The exact same thing happens with the USB ports on the front of my Rosewill case connected to my Abit mainboard.

My guess is that the pinout of the plug for the USB ports is different than the pinout on the mainboard. Somehow, the mainboard is able to self-correct for this but needs to restart in order to do it. Well.. that's my guess anyway...  I've just been leaving the cord for my camera plugged in and it doesn't restart when I plug the camera into the cord.

I've had mainboards where the USBs on the Rosewell case didn't work at all when plugged into the mainboard. If the pinout isn't standard for USB connections (and I've heard it isn't)... I sure don't understand why these case manufacturers dont use single pin connectors instead of a big plug for their front USB ports (some do, and I'll look for that next time I shop). Simplicity is great, but only if it works!!!

P.S.    Don't think it's a power problem. I have a great power supply and this didn't happen until I just recently put in the Abit mainboard.  Also, not the first time I've noticed that the pinout for the USB plug isn't always right for all mainboards. Worked fine with my last board (GIGABYTE).Thanks royphil345!

Like I said, after the reboot all components work properly.

First of all, my brother has a shuffle so he cant keep that plugged in.
Second, I have a 4th Gen iPod and even if the cord has been plugged into my computer for weeks, the machine restarts when I plug the actual iPod into the other end of the cord.

Does anyone know of a driver fix or an adapter to plug into the mobo so I can get this working??I've looked for a fix with no success. Can't even find crimp-on single pin connectors which I thought might help solve the problem.

I just played around with it some more. Did some web research. The wire colors at the connector all look like they're in the right place. The diagram I found on the web matches the way the pinout is on my mainboard manual. Sorry I lost the web page, it may have been helpful. Computer restarted a few times while I was messing with the USB LOL!!!

The thing that's really messing with me now is that I also have another 2 port USB extension mounted to the back of the computer that plugs into a second header on my mainboard. Both are wired the same way (if you go by the wire colors at the plug end), both worked on my last mainboard without restarts. The one on the back of my computer works fine!!! weird!!! I switched the headers the front and back ports are connected to. The back still works fine, the front still restarts the computer when a device is plugged in.

I did just notice that only one of the two front ports causes restarts. Maybe if you're lucky one of yours works OK too?

Now I'm thinking that it's probably just sloppy craftsmanship. Thinking they might not pay any attention to the polarity of the data+ and data-  connections on the USB jack side because it doesn't matter on some mainboards? (worked fine on my last one)  Only explanation I can come up with, especially since one of the jacks works and the other doesn't.

The only fix I can think of is to look in your mainboard manual at the USB header pinout. Find where the data+ and data- wires should be on the plug for each jack. Cut the wires, reverse them and splice them. Can't guarantee this would work, but I can't think of any other explanation for the problem. Thought at first the jacks might be grounded to the case causing problems. Wouldnt explain why 1 of mine works and the other 1 doesn't though.

I've also seen USB ports that connect to the mainboard headers and mount in a floppy drive bay. That could be something to think about.

Was this long enough?!
RoyYou are experiencing unexpected restarts when you make certain changes to your system (removing/installing USB DEVICES on one of your USB ports).

You should be aware that some operating systems, Win XP in particular, are designed to restart when detecting an apparent failure.  You may be generating this failure detection process due to overload or conflicts with some of these devices.  These problems may not occur when booting with these devices already installed, since the loads or conflicts, and the detection process can be quite different.

Without knowing which operating system you're using or any details of your USB devices, here are some comments:

USB devices are designed to operate/communicate using a standard that must support a wide range of devices and requirements.  Some devices place very different loads (power and communication) on your system.  In many cases your USB port/hub must provide all power to a device, in other cases no power is needed.

Possible causes for USB problems is the act of installing or removing a device may cause communications conflicts or unacceptable loads (transient or normal) on your system, especially if your system is operating near or beyond its capacity (too many things, etc.).  This can result in your system detecting an apparent failure.

Possible causes of restart/reboot:

Generally Win XP is designed to restart/reboot after detecting certain system failures.  To verify that this is what may be causing your restarts, you can disable the restart on system failure setting. To do so, right click on My Computer and select the PROPERTIES command from the resulting shortcut menu. When you do, you will see the System Properties sheet. Click the Advanced tab and click the Settings button found in the Startup and Recovery section. Finally, deselect the AUTOMATICALLY Restart check box and click OK.

If you no longer experience retarts, take a look at all your USB devices running normally (keyboard, mouse, drives, etc.) and determine whether you can reduce the loading on your system.

If you still experience restarts, the motherboard, case or device may be faulty.

DellThank You Roy!
Thank You Dell!

I know I have checked to make sure that the internal USB cables are plugged in correctly to USB_1.  I will be sure to first try each port to check if there is a difference.  If problems persist, I will try to switch to the other USB header on the motherboard (USB_2).  I am running Windows XP with Service Pack 2.  I will take a look at the OS aspect of the problem.  I'll tell XP not to reboot automatically.

I just want to let all of you know that you are all incredibly helpful, especially considering this is a free forum!

Solve : Problems installing Gigabyte 7NF-RZ motherboard?

Answer»

Recently installed a Gigabyte 7NF-RZ mothboard into a Win98 system and get device manager error codes for several of the subsystems including the NIC, primary and secondary IDE controllers (all code 10), AC97 audio (code 2) and PCI system management BUS (code 28 ).

I've been concentrating on trying to get the NIC working. For that, I've copied the drivers from the installation CD to a floppy (my CD drive doesn't show in Explorer; probably related to the IDE CONTROLLER issue), and attempted to install them both through "update drivers" and by deleting the NIC in devman and ALLOWING WINDOWS to re-detect it. Either way, windows seems to find everything it needs, but when I restart the system, the NIC is back to code 10.

Anybody else experience this, or have suggestions?

Solve : New Mustek scanner..need help!!!?

Answer»

HELP!!

I've recieved a new Mustek 1248UB scanner for xmas, gotta say I've never heard of the make before..it was off my Grandad!!
Anyways I've INSTALLED everything for it and the programme to use it in 'Ulead' is installed too.

When I click on 'acquire' then scanner...I get the message up saying the scanner isn't connected.....but it is!!!

Also it keeps flashing up a message to do with 'TWAIN' which I don't have a clue what the TWAIN is?!?!?!

Please, any help given will be gratefully recieved..as I don't wanna have to give it back...It may be me not doing something right!?

Cheers Kelly
It's probably not installed right. There is a certain sequesnce to do it. Is your version of Windows compatible with it? Read all the installation instructions carefully! For that model, you have to install  the .exe file on the disk. Also, after restarting the computer, you should have been asked where to locate DRIVER files on the disk. First try searching for them automatically on the drive where the installation disk is located. Then install them. If that doesn't work (driver not found), select "don't search" "have disk" and manually BROWSE for the driver files on the installation disk.

If you messed up on this last step (sounds like you may have hit the wrong button or something), you can GO into my computer / change a setting / performance and maintenance / system / hardware / device manager. Find your scanner (it may have a yellow exclamation point next to it), right-click on it and select "uninstall". Restart the computer and you'll have another chance to find and install those driver files.

During the installation a box may pop up stating that the driver isn't digitally signed or something. Don't sweat it, just select ok continue anyway...Thanx to you both for your help!!  After a long morning of fiddling and farting around i've cracked it!!!

Cheers again

Solve : I/O port addresses?

How many I/O port addresses are there?Generally, there are as many I/O PORTS as your system can manage.

Solve : Keyboard won't work.?

Answer»

My son uses an older Dell, and the left/right arrow keys weren't working, so he disconnected the keyboard and connected an old Packard Bell keyboard.  That didn't work, so he reconnected the Dell keyboard which now doesn't work at all.  I've CHECKED the connections, and they are fine.  To add to the problem, the computer runs on Windows XP and requires a password before going beyond the initial screen.  (a password that can't be TYPED in because the keyboard won't work)  Anybody know what I should try next?Did he disconnect the Keyboards when the computer was TURNED on?

You may be able to use a USB Keyboard or PS/2 to USB converter. He says that it was turned off, but I wasn't there and really am not SURE.

Solve : CD/DVD drive problem?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and suddenly my CD & DVD drives both aren't working. When I go to the Device Mgr, the CD has a red "X" and the DVD drive has an exclamation point.

The Dell Support Center said to uninstall, then reinstall each one. I uninstalled the CD drive and it now says it is disabled. But when I fo to enable it, it says Windows cannot complete the function. Haven't even tried to do for my DVD drive. Anyone have a clue what's going on?Did you uninstall or disable? If you uninstall, you should no longer see that drive in device manager. Then when you reboot, windows should detect ne hardware and reinstall it.I've done both. Right now both drives show a yellow exclamation point.  In the Device Manager for both it says:

CD Drive -- Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or DAMAGED. (Code 19)

I'm baffled. You may try running some registry tools, see if that fixes it. I use WinDoc and regclean. Not sure what the seniors on this forum are useing. Can you elaborate? Not sure what a registry tool is. Is it an internal process or do I need to download SOMETHING from a website? Here is a link to regclean: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,4666,00.asp

WinDoctor is part of Norton 2004 System Works

I saw a RegRepair and an EasyCleaner on the link above. Never used them but one is free and the other is a trial. Just watch the trial stuff. Sometimes, they limit the SOFTWARE so bad, it is unusable.

To elaborate more, the registry contains configuration settings used by Windows for normal operation of programs, devices, etc. Regedit is the built in tool used to manually edit the registry(not for the faint of heart). Other tools can be downloaded that automatically do it for you, the above programs for example.Did you re-boot after UNINSTALLING? Quote

Did you re-boot after uninstalling?

Yes, but I STILL get the same error messages in the Device Mgr.

Solve : Serious Problems!!?

Answer»

Hi guys wondering if any of you could help?
Basically all started a COUPLE of days ago when the plug SOCKET of my computer was turned on the computer seemed to automatically start up without me pressing the power button on the pc, i though maybe it was a problem with the PSU so i replaced it today i have fitted the new PSU and it is doing the same. It doesnt turn itself completly on it seems to 'pulse' continuously and does not respond to the power button on the PC.
Any ideas guys?
CheersIt seems your motherboard LOGIC has gone haywire.  When your power is connected (plugged in), power is applied to your motherboard, whether it is turned on or not.  This allows logic to detect your power switch and for the system to poll (self test) your devices during start up.

This can be caused by bad components/connections on your motherboard, power supply or PC CASE.  It can also be caused by a bad power source (house wiring), although not likely.

Since you have replaced your PS, you should check/replace the case power switch.  If your problem persists and your house wiring is okay, you probably have a bad motherboard.

Solve : suggestions for a new motherboard?

Answer»

I'm a computer graphics student...and have been slowly upgrading my computer and I need a new motherboard/processor.

Right now My computer has:

Asus p4t motherboard
pentium4 1.4ghz processor
1gig of ram
an ati All in wonder 9700 pro card

Also...Right now I dont have enough slots on my motherboard for all the drives I have.
I just bought a new harddrive and a dvd burner...
I also have a zip drive and my original cd burner, and my old harddrive.  I can only have 4 or 5 drives connected.

Also, I think i still want a pentium processor...but I'm open to suggestionsFreakaBoo9.....How many IDE devices do you currently have installed ? Sounds like one hard drive and one cd-rw and you wish to add one new hard drive and one new cd/dvd burner......is that correct?  so far so good.....now your zip drive ..is it a USB connection ?
This configuration should work with your original mobo.
How many pci slots do you require? You should decide what you want to use for a processor and then the REST of your questions will be answered. Most of the new mobo have at least 5 0r 6 pci slots as well as 1 agp and I believe a wireless slot .

hope this is some help

dl65
I added the new harddrive and burner....the zip drive is INTERNAL....everthing is internal...basically i have 5 devices...and two slots to put them in...two devices to a cable...leaves me one space short of connecting all my drives.

Im assuming i was just going to stay with a pentium processor unless someone can convince me otherwise.

also I need a motherboard that I can start with a gig of ram if not two and be able to upgrade...

I am a computer graphics major and do a lot of 3-d stuff...using lightwave and soon maya...once i can transition myself...Is the 9700 8X AGP?

I would make certain that the motherboard supports 8X AGP if you work with 3D graphics.

Extra RAM is nice but necessary unless you enjoy processing power demaning games. 1024MB DDR RAM should be more than enough for other tasks. No reason to go above that unless you've won the LOTTERY.

I'd stick with Pentium - their processors donot get as hot as AMD ones but may cost a tad more. If you had no problem with your Pentium processor, there's no reason not to stick with Pentium. Unless you like a far too hot processor. (AMD..)

Perhaps you should look into external devices if you're not into upgrading your system.Actually if I render on my computer it could use more than a gig of ram...or if I do any long scenes with higher polygon models....

yea i knew I needed an agp 8x slot on my card...

Also as far as the externals go....I dont see the point in spending more money...i just thought it would be nice to not have to swap out dvds and cds that I burn...and if there's a way to internally hook up 2 hd, 2 disk drives, and a zip drive I'd like to know....

Also....I've installed pretty much all the components aside from the motherboard.....do u think I'd be ok to swap that out on my own or should I have someone else do it? Quote

3-D parametric modeling, RENDERING, graphics processing require all the power you can afford.  P4--3+GHz, 1GB RAM are not too much.  Don't forget the hard drive, look for 10,000rpm.  Get rid of the Zip drive, you don't need it.  Burn a CD or DVD.  You can install the motherboard, it's not hard.
eh I need the zip drive as an extra file backup system...and its easy to take my *censored* to class.....so....aside from talking about other components does anyone have suggestions for a motherboard that i should get???Something really expensive and good.

Solve : Help recovering files!?

Answer»

My hard drive stopped working so I had a guy from the Best Buy Geek Squad come out and he diagnosed that the disk was bad.  I BOUGHT a new drive and everything is fine now.  The guy was able to access my old drive by loading Windows XP off of one of his utility discs and backing up some of my important files.  Even while doing this the old drive responded very slowly.

The problem is that I cannot figure out how he accessed my drive in order to get the rest of my files.  When I hook up my old hard drive, either just as the primary or as a secondary, my computer will not boot.  And I can't just boot with my new drive and then plug in the old drive after it has booted, the old drive obviously doesn't show up.

Is there a way to just boot from the Windows XP CD or from a boot disk, so that I can access my old drive?  Or is there any other way to get my files for that matter?

Please help!!!

Thanks!I wouldn't be able to TELL you about a utility disk or whatnot, but I can suggest that you check your jumper settings when doing this. The drive may be in no shape to boot, but there may be a chance you can still access it as a slave.

When you hook it up, ensure that the jumpers on your main HD are set to "master with slave" or "forcing device 1 present," or something of the sort. Make sure the second HD is set to "slave." Most HDs have jumper guides stamped into the metal or on the label, but you can always check the manufacturer website if you're not sure.

Lastly, you should never connect a hard drive while the system is powered on. Besides the risk to electrocuting yourself, the introduction of devices could cause a problem with the power supply, or a problem with the software.Go to this link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822999161

I borrowed something similar from work a couple weeks ago to recover a customers hard drive. If you are into PC repair (which I do on the side as well as at work) this is the greatest thing since sliced penguin. And USb is hotswappable so you dont have to worry about SCREWING your drive or mb by plugging it in the ide when pc is on. And don't worry about electrocuting yourself with +5 and +12 volts DC ide ribbon. The amps are not there.Sweet.  That looks like it will work!  Thanks a bunch, I'm gonna try it out!Let me KNOW how it works out for you.

Solve : Problems at startup and freezing?

Answer»

Last year I had to reinstall windows XP home edition, over the top not clean install, after probs with installing a new vid card. Things have worked fine but over the last week I've been having problems with the computer freezing and on startup.
When i  power up the screen comes up with the BIOS screen in the advanced section with the message in red," During the last boot-up, your system hung for an improper CPU speed setting. Your system is now in safe mode......"
Pressing f10 to save and exit sometimes starts and sometimes the system hangs. It can take 5 or 6 goes at starting up to get things up and running. It can hang at the post screen, after checking the vid. card or sometimes its stops before any display at all.

Would this be a CPU, RAM or HD prob? Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. If i do manage to get things up and running it has run for about an hour then freezes.

System: P4 2400ghz
             1 Gig Kingston pc2700 DDR ( 2 X 512)
             Seagate 40 gig HD
             Leadtek ti4400 vid card

My system isn't tweaked in any way and ambient temperature is never above 25deg C ( I have air conditioning)

Mnay thanks  The things I would try are...

A hardware CHECK. I use TuffTEST. Downloaded off the internet for about $10.00. Makes a bootable floppy that tests CPU, memory, hard drive... Saved me alot of TROUBLE more than once. Hasn't been wrong yet.

Flash the BIOS if you can get the latest version from the mainboard manufacturer's web-site. Clear the CMOS, recheck all the BIOS settings.

A clean install of Windows if all else fails.

Is there any built-in video that hasn't been disabled in the BIOS? Any previous video cards or drivers that haven't been properly uninstalled?

If the problem persists after the BIOS is flashed, CMOS is cleared, and Windows is freshly installed...  It's probably time for a new mainboard (if nothing else failed the hardware test).  I had a mainboard go bad once, acted alot like your description. Thanks Roy, I will give your suggestions a try. After I did the post, I shut down the system, opened up the computer and CHECKED all connections. Everything seemed OK. The only thing that I have changed is I unplugged my Logitec steering wheel from an external four point USB hub.(Belkin) So far I've booted up and shut the system down with no probs and it's been running for up 2 hrs each time.
I had a slight glitch with my multifunction printer a couple of times and it has been connected to the hub. But the probs I had were whether it was connected or not. You think the hub might be the problem?
Many thanks for your help. I'll still try tufftest and see if I can track the problem down.Could be....  Sometimes a system just doesn't like a certain device.

I say, If it works... GREAT!!!

Don't know how much stuff is on your system... Or if you have all your drivers handy... A clean install of Windows may or may not help if you don't want to leave your steering wheel unplugged and the hardware checks out OK.

I suppose it could also be a problem with your video card if it doesn't turn out to be the steering wheel. Would probably try a different one if POSSIBLE before replacing the mainboard. So far so good. System's been running for almost 3 hrs, have run a few programs and had internet on and of several times and no hangs or freezes.
Thanks for your advice Roy. Tufftest will be a good tool to have to check things out and i'll download and try it tonight. Fingers crossed it might just be the hub.
Thanks again and best wishes. I'll try to get back to you and let you know how things worked out.Glad to hear you're not having any more problems.

TuffTEST has definitely been worth the 10 bucks to me. A bad memory chip or hard drive can PRODUCE all kinds of crazy symptoms that look like something else may be wrong. Nice to be able to quickly spot these common problems or rule them out. It also tests your CPU, a few mainboard functions and the cache memory on your CPU. I'm sure not the most powerful diagnostic software available, but the price is sure right, it's easy to use, and it's been very reliable.

Let me know how things turn out. Hope everything stays good!!!

Solve : Onboard sound not "onboard"?

Answer»

I built my computer with a Chaintech 7NJL6 mobo, which is suppose to have  C-Media AC97 onboard sound. After getting all the bugs worked out(or so I thought) I have no sound. I have no little speaker in the task bar and windows does not find/recognize any sound devices. But I can open the generic CD player manually and play a audio CD. So my speakers do work and my drive is reading the CD. Any help would be appriciated.Goto start/PROGRAMS/accessories/entertainment and open volume control from there. Make SURE nothing is MUTED, except the microphone. You say you can play an audio CD OK. What are you not getting sound in, everything else? Did you see the sound device in the device manager? When I go through the start menu andd try to open the volume control, My computer thinks(little hour glass) for a minute, then nothing happens. My sound shows up on the device manager, but all programs tell me that no suitable/or no playback device is foundHave you downloaded the latest drivers from here?

http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/Download/dl_desc.asp?DCSNo=15&PISNo=277Yes I have just RETRIED downloading the drivers from Chaintech's website, but it is the same thing that is on my disk that came with the mobo. And still computer says no playback device is installed. But it shows up in device manager and says it is working properly.Try deleting ALL of the sound drivers in Control Panel/Device Manager and reboot. Do you have the little icon for sound in the bottom right corner (the speaker)?I have deleted the drivers and rebooted, no luck there. But I was wondering, If I have programs on the computer that run with directx 9.0 ( which doesn't work on windows 98 ) if that might be the problem?DirectX 9 is a video thing. I don't know if that would have anything to do with your problem. I say send it back  . Yes I know, its a new mb. Bu thtings happen and you may have a faulty board. It would not be Chaintechs first. Are we to assume that you are running win98 on this machine?Yes running windows 98 SE, I just don't understand how the device manager can say the device is working properly but windows doesn't find any playback devices!Go into control panel/multimedia and see what can be set up from there. While in there, tick the check box to show volumn control icon in system tray. Please read the entire page before MAKING a suggestion. I appreciate everyones advice but I seem to be getting some reptetitious answers to my riddle. My reply is hardly "reptetitious". I see nowhere in this page that it has been suggested. Why don't you try it, or at least state that you have.well I guess it just seems like everyone I have talk to has mentioned the little speaker icon in the task bar. In the start menu under multimedia, the playback and record page is grey'd out. In the lower corner where it says "check box to display volume control in task bar" is checked but also grey'd out.Are you certain that the volumn control program is actually on your machine. Go to start/find and type in sndvol32 - it should be in c:\windows. When you loaded the software for your sound device it probably created a directory and placed files there. If it is SB or Ensonique compatable, the directory would be sbpci. Locate the proper directory; See if there is a setup program for it. If so run it.

Solve : Processor mysteriously changed name!?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

The other day I was on my comp and upon startup I noticed that my PROCESSOR NAME has changed not once, but twice now! I'm rather confused as to how on earth this could HAPPEN! I'm running a Athlon 2600XP an at first it changed it's name to an AMD Duron processor and now it says it's an AMD Athlon 1150 processor. And that is deffo NOT the speed of the processor! It was deffo a 2600XP processor as I installed it myself and saw the WRITING on it saying that.

Has anyone ever heard of this problem? Was the FSB altered in the BIOS?
I never changed it. Is the FSB the front side bus? Should I tinker with it and change it a touch? I don't know what the FSB in the BIOS was to begin with if I were to change it anyway!

Argh! What do I do???Your Front Side Bus may have been altered due to your CMOS being reset.

I SUGGEST that you scan for viruses, trojans and spyware first.

Solve : Form Factors?

Answer»

Judging from this article I understand that there are only TWO types of form factors: AT and ATX,

  • Full-AT
  • Baby-AT
  • LPX
  • Full-ATX
  • Mini-ATX
  • NLX

All these form factors are either for ATX or AT and will fit any ATX or AT board they are meant for, correct?

I am assuming I am right because of this:

Quote
AT / ATX DIFFERENCES

The following is some of the ways in determining if your motherboard is an AT motherboard or an ATX motherboard.

The article only compares AT and ATX.

So I were to buy a Full-AT the AT MAINBOARD would fit in a Baby-AT as WELL. Am I right there?

Any advice would be very much obliged because I have no clue what kind of case to buy for an older mainboard (AT) Quote
...So I were to buy a Full-AT the AT mainboard would fit in a Baby-AT as well. Am I right there?...

How old is this mainboard?  Full AT mainboards haven't been made in 15-20 years.  The specs are backwards compatible, not forwards compatible...i.e., you can't put older mainboards into newer cases, you might be ABLE to put newer mainboards into older cases, if the mounting holes line up...no guarantee of that.  Slots might not line-up with chassis cutouts.
It's a Soyo 5VA2 with a Pentium 75 processor..

I obtained 5 AT (Time) cases with Pentium 100-233MHz processors. Will that mainboard fit inside one of those cases?Raptor....Am I reading you correctly.....you have 5 cases,
with power supplies and You have a  Soyo 5VA2 with a Pentium 75 processor.. Do the slots in case line up correctly with the slots in the motherboard?
I couldnt find any relevant info on that board......if you have both the case and the motherboard ....try it and see if things line up ok .

cheers
dl65  I have not yet received the motherboard. I couldn't find any information on it either. I guess it's far too old.

I was hoping for some general info regarding AT and ATX cases. I think I learnt all that I have to know after buying 5 of them, though.Everything you have is from approximately the same time frame, 1994-1996.  Don't know what you're planning for this stuff, but take a look here:  http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030217/
Pentium 100 w/512MB RAM running WinXP!!!Refurbish, learn and sell.

How can you fit 512MB RAM on a Pentium 100 motherboard? As I understood, 64MB RAM is the maximum for most of these  older Pentium motherboards? Quote
...How can you fit 512MB RAM on a Pentium 100 motherboard? As I understood, 64MB RAM is the maximum for most of these  older Pentium motherboards?

The largest RAM sticks at the time were 32MB (and cost $4/MB).  Win95 and Win98 show little performance improvement above 64MB.  Many older computers that specify a RAM limit will actually surpass the advertised limit.  I see 2 slots in the picture, probably two 256MB sticks.4 $ per MB?

Good thing computers became less expensive over the years.

I will look into these systems today, if I have any questions you'll see them APPEAR on the forum. And questions I will have - never worked with such old systems. Quote

Not just computers...TV's, stereos, all electronics.  Never buy the newest gaget...wait a year or two and the price will be half what it was.

Solve : Hard Drive / Verifying Dmi Pool Data (FIXED!)?

Answer»

So when I did a search for "verifying dmi pool data" this was the first webpage that came up.  I got excited because the info on this page was very resourceful and I have tried everything and nothing.

Here is my problem.  My computer hangs at "Verifying DMI Pool Data" so I did as what was said on this page.  I checked all of my connections for loose connections, I cleared the CMOS, I set the Cmos to "Auto" and it still hangs.  I am building this computer so currently I have no O/S installed.  My hard drive is recognized when I set the cmos on "Auto" but it still hangs on the dmi pool data.  It loads up saying Maxtor(set of letters and numbers) 251gb, etc...  However when I dissconnect the hard drive I get "Disk boot error, boot from disk" meaning I should install the O/S.  Well without a hard drive installed I cannot install the O/S(which will be Windows XP)

I tried calling Maxtor's 1800 number and nothing.  I just need to know why it is stopping at "Verifying DMI Pool Data" and what I can do to get PAST that so I can install my O/S

Any help would be appreciated.   Thanks a lot
-Chris-just wondered if you hard drive jumpers are set..and is this an old pc?http://www.duxcw.com/faq/computer/dmi.htmlit's a brand new pc and the jumpers on the Hard Drive are set to Cable Select.  I was having a problem with getting the pc to boot so I took it back to the place where I purchased the parts because I did all I could so I wanted them to look at it out of my FRUSTRATION.  The guy told me that the Hard Drive that I currently had installed was bad and encouraged me to exchange the bad one for a new one.  Well I took the pc home and tried to install windows Xp and I got an error msg TELLING me that I didn't have an HD installed.  So the following day I exchanged the old hard drive for a new one.  Once I finally got the HD installed and saw that it was recognized, I reboot planning just to install windows and thats when I saw The Verifying DMI Pool data.  This might make more sense if my hard drive wasn't being detected because then maybe I could just diagnose it as being the hard drive.  But is it possible that both hard drives could be bad?  Thanks for any help!
-Chris-
P.S. I'm at work but when I get home I'll check that page again and see if any of that info does the trick.  Thanks!the motherboard should have cdrom install disk try loaded it... Quote

...But is it possible that both hard drives could be bad?...

Same cable or different cable for both drives?
Sorry for the consusion but when I meant both Hard Drives I meant the one that I had to return and the new one that I recieved in place of the bad one.

I do have a cd rom disc that came with the Motherboard but more than likely it won't load with the current Hard Drive Connected.  None of the installation cd roms load while the HD is still connected.  if I dissconnect it they load fine.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.  Are you using the same cable with the one that you had to return and the new one that you received in place of the bad one.  Did this cable come with the hard drive or was it one already in the computer?  I've had brand new cables (packaged with new hard drives) that were bad, especially the new 80-conductor cables.  Instead of "cable select", configure drive as "master" with no other drive on cable.
I am using the cable that came with the new hard drive.  If perhaps this cable is bad would the hard Drive still be acknowledged like it is?  When I boot up the Hard Drive is noted as the Master drive and gives the specs etc...  Cables are relatively cheap I suppose so perhaps I'll just buy a new one tomorrow and see if that helps.

As far as setting the drive to master, I've tried that before(and just now after you mentioned it) and still nothing.  Usually I wait for a minute or two to make sure that it's truly hanging at verifying dmi pool data.  I'll see what happeneds with a new cable tomorrow.  Thanks for the suggestion!
-Chris-This article may be of use:

Computer stops at verifying dmi pool data...One quick question before I buy a new cable.  Let's just say the cable is bad.  By having the HD only connected to the power supply and having a bad cable why is the hd still recognized in the bios?  Just curious.  Any way that is could be the Mobo?  I mean everything else seems to be ok when I unplug the Hd.  Thanks for the help.
-Chris-  How about reading the article I supplied you with first..?As stated in my original post, I have read through the article and nothing.  If I don't have an O/S installed is there any way to get to a dos prompt so I can to run an fdisk?  I have no boot disk and when I load the hard disk that came with the mobo I get a msg telling me to remove the disk and press any key to restart.  However I am having trouble locating the "any" key(a little Simpsons humor!)  Running Fdisk(if at all possible without an O/S) is the one thing I have yet to trySorry for the mass amounts of posting and thanks for the help I will beat this problem!
-Chris- Quote
...As stated in my original post, I have read through the article and nothing.  If I don't have an O/S installed is there any way to get to a dos prompt so I can to run an fdisk?  ...

Please read the article again.  You have obviously missed many things.  You cannot boot the hard drive until you have installed an operating system.  You must boot from the WinXP CD or a boot floppy.  You will have to set the boot order in the BIOS:  FDD, CDROM, HDD.  Create a Win98 boot disk from here:  http://www.bootdisk.com/

This disk will boot to A:> if you've set the boot order properly. Then fdisk and format the hard drive.  If this completes, hardware is okay.  Then put CD in with no FDD and CD should boot.  You can skip the boot floppy step and just boot from the CD.
Ok the problem is fixed(just needing to install an O/S)  HOWEVER perhaps the article was mistyped check this and then Comando check what you wrote....

"We commonly recommend that the floppy be set the first boot device, hard drive as the second boot device and the CD-ROM as the THIRD boot device."

Comando you said to boot as FDD, Cd Rom, and THEN HD last.  I set the boot order to that and I got past the dmi pool data.  I had read over the provided link several times but with no luck.  Thanks a MILLION for the help!  Just curious but should I keep the boot order as it is now or change it once the O/S is installed?
-Chris-
P.S. Also raptor thanks for providing the link! Quote

Sorry, I don't write the articles.  I standby my recommendation, but not all computers will allow that order.  My own computer doesn't allow all three in that order.  Keep the boot order, not necessary to change it.  If you forget and leave a FD or CD in, you'll get an error message when you try to boot.  Slap yourself silly and remove the offending disk.

Solve : GeForce 6200 problem with 3D?

Answer»

I have a Xmdia (NVIDIA) GeForce 6200 graphics card.
When I install it onto my computer, all my 3D graphics are distorted and corrupt. I first noticed it with the 3D Windows SCREENSAVER that tells me the time (standard in XP) and then I tried playing WORLD of Warcraft and it was completely messed up. I tried running dxdiag tests but they just confirm that my 3D doesn't work. I tried repairing DirectX and disconnecting my 2nd CD-ROM thinking it was a power issue, but no luck. I also upgraded my BIOS. And "turned off" the onboard display adapter in BIOS. STILL no luck. I reinstalled the Nvidia Driver from the website. Nono.

I have:
Computer: HP Pavilion a700n
Processor: 2.10 Ghz AMD Athlon XP
Memory: 1.5 Gb of RAM
Motherboard: ASUSTek Computer INC. Kelut 2.02
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.15 06/06/2005
Onboard Video Adapter: VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP

Your help is appreciated.
-=-Oscar-=-Open the Device MANAGER and check the line for "display adapters". There should be no question marks or exclamation points there.

Did you try installing the latest version of DirectX?

I also SEE that the GeForce 6200 is at least a YEAR old. Did you install a new or used one?

Here's a link to further tech support if your problem isn't resolved here:

http://www.xmdia.com/support.html
I do have the latest version of DirectX. And there are no problems in my Device Manager. I've tried contacting Xmdia but they keep telling me "Nono, tech support not in...please call back later" in foreign accents. It's driving me crazy.

And I purchased this card new at Microcenter.

Thanx,
-=-O-=-Start/Run and type in dxdiag and press enter. What do you get?Did you uninstall the drivers for the on-board video before installing the new card? Uninstall the on-board video from the Windows Device Manager before installing the new card? Install new card with power supply unplugged or turned off?

Sounds like the card may be defective.

Solve : Issue with new (old) computer?

Answer»

I just recieve a used laptop for xmas, its a toshiba portege 7100.  I want to know how I can make it work so when I plug in my network cable from my cable modem, i can connect on my laptop. The laptop has an ethernet jack and i plugged it in and tried to obtain and IP and set it all up but all i get is PPP  Adapter. what do I need to do? i hope this is in the right topic section.hopefully you are just trying to run DHCP. If the laptop has the NIC driver INSTALLED (double check in Device Manager) then it is very simple. It would be simpler if you had stated your operating system, but....

Go to Start, Run then browse for program Files/internet Ex-plorer/COnnection Manager, Inetwiz and click OK.

Choose connect with LAN (as opposed to modem0, then take the default settings on the next page.

choose if you want to set up e-mail on this MACHINE. If so, just fill in the relevant data. If not, or if you want to do this later (you can just run this later), choose no.

There you go. Just click on IE.Sorry i didnt mention, its 98se. I plan on upgrading to XP soon though but that doesnt matter, I did exactly what you said, but it would not connect or anything. in the device manager, one says Dial-up Adapter or w/e, and the other one is like Fir and Lan DockII or something I DONT remember exactly what..just because there is an ethernet jack, does that mean there is a NIC card installed? no lights COME on or anything then I plug it in.Go to Control Manager/System?device Manager and see what is listed under network adapter, if anything. If none or an exclamation point the driver is not installed.

Here is the download page for WHATEVER you might need:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modSel.jspOk under network adapters I have Dial up adapter, Toshiba FIR Port Type-DO, and Toshiba PCI FastEthernet Lan on Docker II and everything is working properly it says.So does this have a docking station with it? SOmetimes there is an option in BIOS/setup to either use the onboard NIC or the docking station (some older Dells are like that for sure). If no docking station, then you would want to enable the onboard.yea its on a docking station and the Ether is on the docking stationok now it seems to be reading it and stuff cuz the lights are blinking, but i still cant connect, when I go to winipcfg, should it be on PPP Adapter or the Ethernet, because when I put it on the ethernet it wont stay on it, soon as i go back its back  on the PPP adaptercan anyone else help? You might need to install the proper drivers for the network card or c onfigure it.

You can disable the modem if you do not require it.

Solve : Computer Freezing...CPU or Heat Sink Thermal Pad???

Answer»

A few weeks ago my laptop froze on me.  I tried turning it back on and only a click and the green power light.  I thought maybe the hard drive was the problem, replaced it and it seems to be fine.  Computer still freezes on me.  Do I need to replace my CPU, heat sink thermal pad, or something else altogether?
Help!!before you spend more cash ....info on system...laptops dont have heat sink...a fan that blows ACROSS the cpu..the biggest cause of hangs/freezing ..no enough ram.../junk thats not needed/video driver corupt reg the list is endless from a point or this forum ...if you can give more info...is always means that one of us on the forum can help you help....and as they say have a nice day Please supply make and model of Laptop.  Is it still under warranty?Laptop is a Compaq Series PP2140.  It does have a heat sink thermal pad around the CPU that has somewhat melted away.It has 256MB ram and worked fine until just RECENTLY.  I removed most of the software programs and reinstalled windows XP.  I was lucky it didn't freeze during the installation.  I got it running again and it seemed fine but then just froze up.Unfortunately it is not under warranty.  When the laptop was given to me from school, it was obsolete at the time.  Very disappointed but need to find the least money route to having a laptop. One other thing.  This laptop has an AMD Athlon XP.  I've been told they have been known to burn out very easily.before getting out the CHEQUE book/credit card ...has this laptop any life...like safe mode. the  magic f8 key on boot up...it may have suffered from over HEATING ...put some kind of thermal pad underneath it..or place wood ...to increase the airflow..

I am the same person who asked the original question.  Just registered.

Sometimes it boots up just fine.  Sometimes I get a check disk and it might get through the check disk before freezing again.  It takes several power on and power off tries to get it to go that far.I have also been able to do a virus scan as well as defragmenting.  I was surprised that it didn't freeze during these processes.  Is there any equipment that can be used to test if the CPU is bad? CPU either works or it doesn't, there is no middle ground.  The equipment costs more than the computer.  There is temperature monitoring software, if the computer has the temp probes on the motherboard.

That's a good sign.  Does BIOS have settings for fan?  Some have temp limit to turn fan on.

This morning I tried to use and discovered the machine looked like it was in sleep mode. The power was on but the monitor stated 'sleep mode'.
Usually you can just press the power button and it comes to life but it didn't happen.
Fiddled with the front four buttons of the monitor and now it says 'Burn in' when you turn it on and then proceeds to display different colors screens and nothing else. I can't get it to change back to displaying 'sleep mode'.

Anyway, the cpu still powers up to look like it's in sleep mode. There's no reboot, no beeps, no nothing but a cpu that looks like it's on.

Tried resetting, taking apart and cleaning any dust in the machine and uplugging EVERYTHING and turning it off but to no avail.

Anybody have any ideas? The same kinda thing just happened to me today. Here's my story for the 20th time today: "OKAY can you please just tell me how to fix this. I got a new computer 2 days ago. It worked just like it was supposed to. Today I leave my computer to go have a snack, come back about 15 min later and the monitor had gone off. I wasn't surprised because it automatically powers down after 10 min of inactivity. Well I moved the mouse AND IT WOULD NOT COME BACK ON! The power is on, its hooked up and everything,& the mouse is hooked up. I tried restarting, turning off all power to everything, and trying a different monitor but it did the same thing. After fooling around with the monitor reset buttons it shows an error message saying "Out of range" right before it goes into standby. Please tell me how to fix this. Thanks!"

More information: IT DOES NOT SHOW ANYTHING AT ALL, except when I hold down the power button it shows the 3 color bars; red, green,& blue. That's it. Please someone tell me how to fix this. And yes, I am using a different computer to write this.

I WOULD BE FOREVER GRATEFUL IF YOU CAN HELP ME!!!!

DerrickBoot into Safe Mode- F8 and make sure the driver settings are correct (Refresh Rate) for your monitor.

Solve : Laptop's PCI Slot is Broken. What to do??

Answer»

Hi EVERYONE. As any concerned citizen, I'm really concerned about my baby [computer.] Here's the situation:
My laptop had an external WiFi card plugged in all the time. After several months, I took out the card because I was going to travel. When I tried to re-insert the card, it wouldn't go in. I am pretty sure that PRESSURE on the outside of the WiFi card damaged the INSIDE of the PCI bus, so that now it is bent and I can't plug anything to it. The people fixing the computer said it would cost $700 and I shouldn't try to fix it; that I should buy a new computer instead.
I heard there are external PCI bus slots where I can plug in a card (like a WiFi card or a USB 2.0 card.)
IS THIS TRUE? Where can I buy it? What is the official name? I can't seem to find it online...
Thank you in advance. This means a lot to me!
Thanks!
-CSJIt is not a PCI slot, it is PCMCIA.

If that is the case, there is no good solution usually, short of a new or at lleast different machine. The question is, is it damaged BEYOND repair? I might get a second opinion on that.

You also have an option of a USB adapter if you have USB available. This would be a solution for well below $100. Some use USB 1.1 and some USB 2.0. Here are some examples:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1645273&CatId=369

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Manufactory=&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=1330%3A10001&PropertyCodeValue=0&description=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=31&Submit=Property

What make and model of computer, and how old? What operating system?

It's a 3-year-old HP Pavilion ze4145 running on Windows XP.

It was an HP technician that took a look at the computer and gave the "you might as well get a new computer."

My problem is this: I need a USB2.0 and the computer doesn't have one. I wanted to use a USB2.0 card but it won't go in...

So, there is no external PCMCIA?

THANKS!There should be one or two little slots on the side of the machine, frequently behind a flap or door. That is where the PCMCIA card plugs in. Check your owner's manual or the HP site if you cannot find them. Why do you have to have USB2.0? Video capturing? Most usb DEVICES will work with both versions of usb. Video Capture devices I do believe would require 2.0. Mine does anyway.

Solve : scanner twain source problem?

Answer»

I have an Epson 1670 scanner hooked up to WINDOWS xp on my pc. Last week while trying to scan a PICTURE I got a message saying
" scan could not be started could not open twain source make sure it is a valid source for the scanner.
I have never had any problems with this scanner in the 2 years I've owned it. I tried opening it from its software INTERFACE and got a message
"unable to start the scanner because it is not ready or another application is using it"
The scanner is ready and I can't think of any other programs that is using it. There might have been a problem with a Trojan virus I downloaded 3 weeks ago. I discovered it and had to purchase and INSTALL DOCTOR spyware to remove it. It removed it but I seem to recall some kind of twain source message that flashed across my screen at the time. Is there a connection? A friend said to go to device manager and uninstall the drivers, then go to windows twain directory folder and delete its contents. I went to device manager in the control panel and open the folder but it was blank, no scanner nothing just a blank folder. This got me thinking that it might be more than just a simple problem. any suggestions for the next step would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
pursuant....... The easiest thing for you to try would be to completely uninstall your scanner .......including any drivers .....reboot and make sure its gone ......and then reinstall it . ( I assume you have the cd which came with your scanner )
That should solve your issue .
Are you certain that you have removed the trojan ?

dl65
I have done a uninstall from the add/remove section of the control panel, a couple of times. Does that remove the drivers as well? I know there is a twain folder in windows directory, does that have to be removed too?
As for the trojan...well I think so . I downloaded  Doctor Spyware and it seem to catch quite a few things. I ran a list of exe files in search and found one that I looked up and it was one of these trojan files. I deleted it. I run spyware everyday and I'm not catching anything that appears bad so at this point I think I got it but I am not positve. I run 3 spyware programs and I have an updated antivirus program. I hope this is enough.
Thanks again for the suggestion

Solve : ADSL restarts computer?

When I access the internet via broadband (ADSL external Modem) I often GET powered down and automatically re-started.  My service provider said it was a power problem and to install a pc USB card.  I did and nothing changed.  I consulted everthingusb.com and was advised to upgrade fom my 359 watt power supply to 450 watt.  Done that - no change.  It doesn't happen all the time. Solve : Need help with bios/hd cant boot up?

Answer»

I have a problem, i got another computer yesterday, fully assembled, i booted it up it starts fine... I took out my dvd r and my old hd and put in the new one, sometimes it will read both roms and both hd sometimes not, ever since i put the new hardware in, it wont boot to windows, it asks if i want safe mode, normally, or configure last CORRECT settings or something like that... So then i tried booting it up with my old hd that still works and has xp on it.... same thing when it actually proceeds to boot up windows, it goes to a BLUE screen with some writing on it for about a half second (too fast to read what it is, pretty sure its NOT scandisk) then it reboots. So then i put both hd's in my old computer it starts windows fine.... Only thing else i did was move some pics and a few programs to the new hd. I DIDNT change anything in bios, i even tried to go back to default. I cant start in command or safe mode or regular, it just reboots after it shows the blue screen. Tried with both hds on the new computer... All the help is appreciated...
Running virus scan, etc. on new hd but i doubt the hd is the problemPutting a hard drive loaded with Windows in a new machine with totally different hardware seldom works well. What about reformatting the drive and reinstalling Windows with the current hardware?

Some people have been able to get this to work with a lot of tinkering if they know what they're doing, but it will be less time and misery to just do it the right way.Well i wasnt trying to boot up windows from my old system at first, i was just trying to have both hds in and was using the same hd for the new comp to load up windows, i started it just fine before i added the other hd and dvdr. But yeah im just going to reformat and reload windows and hopefully itll boot up, thanks... and i didnt make a backup of my old hd before moving it and i didnt scan for viruses on the new hd and guess what ? 451 viruses, not including spyware lol... so LONG for my stuff, next time i wont be such an idiot. You can COMPLETELY fry your motherboard by booting to a hard dive with Windows installed for a different system.

Don't know how you added the additional drives. Where you plugged them in on the cables... jumper settings... Did you replace the original optical drive with another? Uninstall old one first? Check in the BIOS to make sure the devices are being detected correctly? (sometimes you have to hit a button to autodetect drives)  Set boot order properly in the BIOS?

For gosh sakes!!! Download AVG Anti-Virus, it's free, it works. Maybe SpywareBlaster from www.javacoolsoftware.com as well. (also free)

Solve : Help with computer problem.?

Answer»

My computer was host to a multitude of virus's which left my computer barely functioning.  Eventually, the start menu was shot and the desktop would freeze up if you tried using it, and my computer would go into a blue screen and state that a fatal error had occured.  Seeing as how I do not have a restore cd, I am wondering how I would erase my harddrive and start from new.  I have already tried reinstalling Windows XP and it TOLD me that the version on the cd was earlier than the version on my computer, and I haven't been able to find a later version of the cd.   Eventually, my computer started to stop functioning at sometimes, stopping at the BIOS screen, so is there a way to run from the CD directly from the startup?  Is there a way I can ENTER dos mode or the command prompt from the startup of the computer?  Please be detailed in your explainations from start to finish.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. You need to get into your bios, usually by tapping the Delete key at bootup (your key may be different), and set your cdrom as the FIRST boot device.
Then boot with the xp disk in the cdrom.

Solve : Cd to MP3?

Answer»

Hi
Is there a free PROGRAM or anything, that will allow me to take music from my cd COLLECTION, and make them into MP3S so i can play them on my MP3 player. Thanks for any help.If you have Windows Media Player you will be bale to RIP them into WMA format. WMA is just as good as MP3 but less in size so you can put more of them on your MP3 Player.

Most MP3 players play WMA FILES too. Apart from IPOD that has its own thing but it changes the WMAs into its format.

R0SSHi
Thanks for the response but how do you rip them with windows media player. my MP3 player will play the the files you mention.Hi,
I prefer special software to rip the CD to MP3,

but my favourite is:
http://www.freetipson.co.uk/healthcare/freeware/audiograbber.htmlWindows Media player 10 will rip to MP3 and does a great job at it,Yep, Windows Media Player 10 is the simplest and it's free. Just put in a CD, hit the "rip" button on the player, select your desired format (mp3), you're desired QUALITY and that's it.Thanks.

Solve : HP Officejet 6110 All-in-one?

Answer»

hey GUYS, I'm back. I'm having a heck of a time with this printer of mine. It is an HP officejet 6110 all in one. It was connected successfully to another computer but when I tried to connect it to my other computer (2.0 Ghz, 512 MB RAM) The printer connects with a USB connection and I've PLUGGED the printer into a friend's computer and it will connect.

When I connect the printer the little box in the lower right corner pops up and says it is looking for a USB COMPOSITE device, then I get a blue screen saying that windows was shut down for safety reasons, there are no more IRP stack options and the systems does a physical dump of the memory.

Can anybody please help me? I'm super frusterated with this thing, I'm ready to make it a paper weight.

You have to LOAD the software then reboot and plug in the printer. It's all very self explanatory with the directions. If you don't do it in the right sequence it can get FUBAR'ed.Software is already on the computer, in fact the driver on the computer is newer than the one on the cd. When I ran the cd it simply told me my driver was newer so I should simply plug in the printer and all should be hunky dory. Nope. Didn't work. I also tried all the other USBs on the computer to no avail. One thing I didnt try, but I will is to put something else in the USB to see if the USB is screwy, I'll send a note once I do. However, please feel free to offer any advice or hints to help solve the problem before I post again. Thanks all!!Could be a problem with the newer drive. Install the old one. Sometimes newer does not mean better.

Solve : 7800GTX Help!?

Hello,

Specs:
AMD 64 3400+
2gig PQI Turbo RAM
Leadtek 7800GTX
Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W
Gigabyte GA-K8NE

Today i bought a 7800GTX and a Gigabyte K8NE Motherboard for my Socket 754 AMD. I removed the thermal compound on the CPU and Heatsink with the Arctic Silver Cleaner and Purifier and then added the Arctic Silver 5. Plugged everything (PCI-E cord, ATX 12v etc.) The computer turns on normally, Video Bios comes up everything seems to be working fine, can get into Bios normally. But when it gets to the windows loading screen (The windows logo with the looping bar below it), it doesn't show it and the monitor just says going into SLEEP mode (Philips 19" LCD 190S). The computer continues to load up normally, i can hear the hardrive getting into windows etc. No sound from the speakers cause i haven't installed the drivers on the mobo yet. Everything is running perfect except the Graphics card? I have set the Init display as PEG (PCI express Graphics), and have tried 2 DVI converters on both the DVI ports, i have also taken the Card out and put it back in, with no avail. Please Help! i don't want to have to tell my mum that we have to go buy something else!!
Thanks alot,
MgreenIf you are trying to run your 'old' windows on this new hardware you MAY encounter problems.
Try starting in safe mode and remove the old drivers, too many hardware changes at the same time will spin windows out.
Let us know how you go?Or best to reload a fresh copy of Windows with the new hardware in place. If you have a viable method of backing up your personal data (a second hard drive, BACKUP DVDs, flash drive), it would be best to reformat and reinstall Windows with your new motherboard configuration. However, if this is not possible, hit the RESTART button on your computer (or turn it off and turn it back on via the button) WHILE your computer is on the Windows loading screen (immediately following BIOS). After the BIOS shows again after reboot, you should be able to choose to enter Safe Mode.

Solve : wireless network no internet?

Answer»

Installed DSl and wireless router(Dlink 108Kbs). My laptop with Win XP is able to connect with WEP encryption and password with no fuss. My older desktops with Win 98SE can connect to the router through password, but not the internet! Am I missing some setting in the router's config routine?Did you get a manual with it?The router comes only with an install CD which WALKED me through the BASIC setup, and it seemed to get things done. My laptop is connected OK.  Both of my 2 older desktops running Win 98SE, with Celeron 500.  The laptop is a year-old Toshiba with built-in Wifi Athero 108kbps.  For the desktops I use a USB Linksys 54kbps adapter, because anything faster seems to need abandon Win 98SE.  It has been working because it can from time to time connect to unsecured routers from the neighborhood.  When I connect to my own secured router with WEP password protection, they SHOW connection to the router but not to the internet.  What's where I GOT STUCK.  May be some of the router setting is not right, just for Win 98SE?!!

Solve : Device manager problems?

Answer»

I have just built a NEW computer and have just found out that in device manager, i have a few exclimation marks under other devices. This is the list of things that have an exclimation mark Ethernet controller, Other PCI bridge device, Pci memory controller, sm Bus Controller. How do i fix these
Thanks. Those are items that Windows detected, but didn't find the correct drivers for.

Looks LIKE you didn't install the drivers for your mainboard. There are usually drivers for the main chipset (IDE PCI etc...) and for any on-board or PCI LAN device these days. Looks like that's exactly what you're missing.

If drivers didn't come with your mainboard, or you're using the mainboard from a stock system, you'll have to go to the manufacturer's web-site under support and try to find drivers.

If the drivers are .exe files, the exclamation points should disappear on their own when the proper drivers are installed. If the drivers you download are just info files, you'll have to right click on all of the devices with exclamation points and select "UNINSTALL". Restart your computer and it will begin reinstalling the devices and asking you where the driver files can be found. Select "don't search" "have disk" and browse for the files where you downloaded them to.Thanks, installed MOTHERBOARD drivers and all works WELL now.

Solve : Do I need video card?

Answer»

I am starting to put together a new computer to replace my old one.  The most INTENSIVE work I will be doing is basic home movie editing to prepare DVD's.  Do you guys suggest I get a video card or will the on-board video memory be enough for this type of work?  If I NEED one, which type of card and how much memory do you recommend?  ThanksWhat kind of onboard videocard is present?

If you wish to edit DVD's and other types of movie formats you will need a powerful videocard. I doubt that there are on-board videocards that are as powerful as the latest expansion card videocards.I have not decided on a motherboard yet.  I suspected I wouild need the video card anyway.  Do you think 64 or 128 MB will be enough or should I go with 256?There are more factors that play a role than the amount of megabyte.

If you are into editing DVD's and creating your own movies, you'll want something more powerful than when you only want to place movies on a CD and leave them UNTOUCHED. I suggest you gather INFORMATION from dedicated computer stores or Multi-media stores that specialize in movie/sound editing.

How Stuff Works - How Video Editing Works

There's not much else we can do for you. Unless SOMEONE here is interested in editing film, you will have to gather more information. Quote

CPU: P4 3.4 Ghz
Mem: 1G (2x 512) corsair PC4200
HD: Seagate Barracuda 250GB
Mobo: ECS PF21 Extreme 925XE Socket 775
PSU: ASPIRE ATX-AS520W ATX 520W
OD: LITE-ON ATAPI / E-IDE DVD-ROM

So here is the scoop...

In june, I purchased parts to put my own rig together. A friend and I did so sucessfully and my rig worked for about 3 months. Then one morning I went out for an hour or so and came back to find that there was no picture on my monitor. I moved the mouse but no picture came back. I took it in to have another video card tested and that wasn't the problem. I tired everything only to determine that my CPU had been burned. I sent it in and got a replacement, put it in my mobo and still there was no video. So I sent in my mobo, and got a replacement.

Now, I put everything together and turn on my computer. It stays on for about 45 seconds or so and then shuts off completely. No power at all. I was fiddling with it and maganed to produce video once and it told me that there was something wrong with CMOS. I pressed DEL to enter setup and the screen went blank with just the blinking cursor. So after each time I turn the computer on and it loses power after 45 seconds, I can't turn it back on until I take the jumpers off for CMOS and put them back on. After I do that, it does the same thing.JdoobsWell ......It seems you have been fiddling with a lot of the components.....The CPU ( was fried ) , the mobo replaced , the vid card swapped ...etc ......
How about more info ...about :
MOBO
CPU
whats in the box as far as storage drives , optical drives ?

How big a PSU do you have and is it ok ......?

Have you checked to be sure there is no damage to the "new" cpu and did you use the appropriate THERMAL PASTE ?

Is the heat sink and cpu cooling fan installed properly ?

When you reset the CMOS are you able to get back into bios ?

When it starts and runs for approx 45 seconds and then shuts down ........ is the processor hot ( carefully check the heat sink...by touching it )  the pc may be shutting down as a result of the heat sensor .

let us know

dl65
Sorry about the late info on stuff in the box, it's in the first post

Some other notes ... I have tried SWAPPING the PSU out and I get the same results

My CPU came with a sink and fan unit with a block of thermal paste already on the sink. I have taken the CPU out a couple times to reseat that.

The heatsink does get warm.

I figured that if the heatsink was getting warm then the processor isn't busted, I would at least be getting video. The monitor receives NOTHING though. Not even a load before BIOS.bump

The danger of some DIY forums is that OCCASIONALLY someone will encourage this type of behavior. This is just a warning for those who think it's something simple and easy that can be fixed. It's not. He may replace the IDE controllers, but he can not open the casing without specialized equipment. Such as a dustfree environment.I guess he has all the right stuff Raptor, it's his job, not something he does in his garage.
I WANT to learn a little more than, 'they have really strong magnets in them'.
