Solve : Win 95 Comp says no CDrom when I have one?

Answer»

This is a Win 95 system and I just got the computer from a company going under. It has a cd-rom LOADED but it doesn't detect one in hardware search nor is it in the Cmos set up either.  I have no DISKS with the computer. I tried to install a generic cd rom driver(not sure of brand) with no luck. I do know it is a 32X. I don't know if I did it correctly or not I have always had the correct driver/disk.
I can open the case and find out the brand but then what should I do. I will check the CONNECTIONS. The Cd-rom does have power it opens and takes a cd just won't play it.
Thanks!
CathyAs you said, check the connections and also check the JUMPERS (master/slave/cable select)they may have stripped the o/s from it?what happens if you boot your pc and hit the safe mode f5 key....anything..No they did not take out the O/S everything else works great just won't let me use the cd player for anything door opens light comes on but the computer doesn't know it is there???You should replace the cables leading to the CD-ROM drive.

Or install ANOTHER CD-ROM drive to test the cables you currently have.type msinfo32 in the run box it should tell what cdrom drive you have or my computer icon right-click /properties tab/ click device manager cdrom drive+ sign

Solve : CD/DVD RW problem?

Answer»

Whenever I insert a CD into my CD/DVD RW, my computer restarts...then when it comes back on one of those 'send to WINDOWS' things comes up, it says the problem 'minidump' and another file to do with the system, i deleted minidump but it still keeps HAPPENING. HELP!? Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all optical drives, CD, CD-RW, DVD, etc.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes.  Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished.  Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, IGNORE it and MOVE to the NEXT one.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

See if this sorts out the restarts.

in the command prompt type this dumpchk.exe -e I believe it will
give you more information on what is happening...is embeded with m$osft error reporting log etc..
or is it this cause the problem>

Solve : Monitor has dark horizontal lines.?

Answer»

I've had my PC for about 3 years now and recently dark horizontal LINES have been appearing across the screen where the IMAGES are DARKER.  At first I THOUGHT it was a problem with the monitor so I tried hooking up my old monitor, but still got the lines.  I tried changing my refresh rate, but still have the lines.  This is REALLY starting to annoy me.  I can't even SEE images when the background is too dark.  Would really appreciate help ASAP.  Thanks in advance.I suggest you clean your videocard thoroughly (Remove dust) check the cables, replace them if necessary.

Perhaps even uninstall the videocard drivers, then take out the videocard, see if any dust or other types of unwanted visitors have settled in the slot and then place it back in.

If none of this solves the problem, you may have to look into buying a new videocard. Or try a different slot.what does dxdiag report..type it in the run  box to find out?I already tried running the dxdiag.  No problems turned up, but I'll try cleaning the video card.have you tried setting  video modes to 800x600? what operating system is this and what graphics card?

Solve : CD-R problem, please help!?

Answer»

I have been able to write to CR-R's two times since adding the drive a few days ago.  All the sudden now it won't write.  It is a generic CR-R drive, the first time I was able to write i used memorex CD-R's now that I can't write I've been attempting to write to CR-RWs.  Also I'm having big problems with low disk space, so I've gotten rid of everything I can think of that I don't use, but to no avail.  I don't go in changing or deleting things without KNOWING what they are for (my rule if you didn't create it, don't delete it) but I must have don't something because what worked fine a few days back now doesn't at all....

Any ADVICE would be welcome....thanksSearch for viruses and Trojans.

What is the capacity of your harddisk and how much have you used so far? Perhaps you are only deleting smaller files whilst you NEED to remove the larger programs. If your harddrive space is dissapearing, you should run a virus and Trojan scan.what OPERATING system and what burning software is used?could it be winxp just a guess>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q285/1/07.ASP&NoWebContent=1

Solve : pentium 3 processer?

Answer»

I accidently bought a pentium 3 500mhz processer and I have a pentium 2. I put it in and it comes up and says cpu mmx at 250mhz and says press delete at the bottom to enter setup but it won't do nothing. It dosn't have tabs on the sides to lock it in place like the 233mhz pentium 2. Will it work at all?I suggest you refer to your manual to SEE if the CPU is compatible with your mainboard.

If the CPU does not fit on the socket or it does not fit properly (As in being secured) you should not attempt to use it, it may result in PERMANENT damage.

You would be better off returning the CPU to the point of sale.

It fits snug in there but it has a connector wired to the heatsink like a ground and I don't know where it goes. Its a slot 1.Perhaps your motherboard does not allow you to connect the third connector because it does not support monitoring RPM or whatever the third wire is meant for.

When you boot and it asks you to enter Setup, are you able to boot into the BIOS? You may have to reconfigure the settings due to the new processor.

I still advise you to refer to the manual in order to determine if it is compatible. You may risk damaging hardware.I've never seen a PIII processor that will run in a PI board, what motherboard is this? You did not CONSIDER bus speed and MULTIPLIER.  Bus speed is usually fixed by the motherboard, multiplier can sometimes be changed in the BIOS.

PII-233 has 66MHz bus with 3.5 times multiplier.
PIII-500 has 100MHz bus with 5 times multiplier.
The 500 will never run at 500 but will probably run at 350.

Solve : A drive weird..?

Answer»

It has never done this before, but just recently, when my WINDOWS xp pro boots up completely, i LOG onto my name desktop LOADS, my a-drive will kick on, like its reading and then quits.. does this in safe mode also, and i have shut down all PROGS, its never done this before...Perhaps it is searching for a program to run that has not been correctly uninstalled.

I suggest you clean the registry and remove redundant files with a program such as Regseeker and Advanced System Optimizer.

Solve : It says I have no NIC/Network Adapter?

Answer»

It says I have no NIC/Network Adapter.  Obviously I don't know much about computers so any help would be great.  It looks like there is one back there.  Do I need to get a new adapter or what?
do u have a card for 10/100 baseT?When I looked to see what kind of card I had it just told me I didn't have one.  I assume you have installed a NIC/Network adapter?I am having a similar problem.  I have no idea what is going on.  My computer isn't recognizing that i have a network card AND a wireless card.  I've tried doing everything: taking it out and rebooting to let the computer recognize it, I tried installing the most recent drivers like 50 times, i looked for drivers on all my disks the computer came with.  I am a bit confused because at the beginning of AUGUST, my computer's video card was on the fritz.  I tried putting in drivers and unistalling/reinstalling, and somewhere in the process the computer told me that i lost a vital windows FILE.  I ran the system restore thingy, and I went through the "windows" installation screens, ect.  When i was through, the video card was fixed but i lost my network card and the wireless one.  Heh im posting from my old computer  .  But anyway some specs on my comp is:

network card: Realtek RTL8139 Family Fast Ethernet Nic
Wireless card: D-Link DWLG520 wireless card
Video Card: ATI RADEON 9200
Mobo: No Idea :-/
Processer: AMD Athalon XP 2.09 ghz (or whatever)
I have a partitioned hard drive, but i dont think that makes a difference
OS: Windows XP Professional

Any help is welcome, the computer identifies the problem as "missing drivers" but i tried everything.  I had to reformat once, but it was working fine after that.

I know i will not need new cards, because they were working fine untill i went through that windows restore thing.  I would just restore my computer to when the cards were working but restoring the computer wiped out my restore points.

Once again, I'm open to all ideas.Have you contacted Technical support of the COMPANY that fabricated your Network cards?

I suggest you search through your manual to see if your motherboard is capable of having these cards installed.

Also check the BIOS to see if you have overlooked any important settings that may need to be reconfigured.Yeah... i called those places and they said that i needed drivers.  When i tried to install them step by step with the technician, it still didn't work.  Then they suggested to try other people.

I'm begging to think no one wants to take the responsibilty/time.

Im calling the computer manufacturer now.  I'll see what they have to say.I would open the System applet (right click on My Computer and select Properties, then Hardware and the Device manager button) and look for two entries for Network Interface under 'Other Devices' and open those. You select 'Update Driver' for them. Try the 'automatic' search for drivers first, and use any install PROGRAM download or disk if that fails. If you used System Recovery, they should still be on the disk, just your registry entries for the devices are gone.

Er... why are you using both a wireless and a wired NIC?this sounds crazy but remove them in the device manager and take them out of your pc and re-boot now shut down..replace one card nic and reboot pc ..then the same again for your wifi card...windows will FIND both of them a new irq...type msinfo32 in the run box it will tell you more on what your pc has got?Um Hmm The wireless card is since my computer is across the room from the internet connection.
The NIC card is for lan parties .

But i decided after calling compusa to reformat.

I have my hd partitioned so it should be okay.

a few cuts and pastes and im good to go.
Thx for the help and the ideas.

Solve : cds stutter in drive?

Answer»

every couple of seconds there's a digital stutter, making listening annoying, first HAPPENED in the dvd-rom drive, restarted the computer and everything was okay, then a week later it happened, again, but restarting didn't fix it, then it happened to the cd-rom drive,
tried updating drivers, uninstalling, using a:\ drive BOOT disks to update FIRMWARE, which temporarily fixed the cd-rom drive, but i've had to do that a couple of times, but the dvd-rom drive has been perpetually stuttering for 3 days, including, also, when playing DVDs
There could be a couple of causes:

- The drives might not be seated properly (slightly tilted)

- If you leave you system running constantly, they might be heating up and causing performance issues.

- You might want to check your system resources, if they are running low that can cause a problem as well.

- Or the drives might be bad <= hope its not this onedoes this happens to all disks or copy one ones...operating system and software use when this occurs...thanks for the RESPONSES,

i've whacked my computer a bunch of times after it started doing this, out of frustration, but it didn't help,
my computer has been on 99% of the time for 1.5 years, so maybe i'll give it an overdue rest later this evening.
this happens EVEN when i've nothing open, ie, just rebooted my computer and used "task manager" to turn off anything i didn't need open,
it happens to store-bought pre-recorded compact discs, as well as DVDs, and cd-rs,
windowsXP and it happens using winamp, WMP, urusoft VIplayer, and powerDVD,
thanks

Solve : digital distorsion in cdrom?

Answer»

A few weeks ago I started having digital distorsion from one of my cdroms when playing a cd.  I called Dell and after 2 hours on the phone they decided to send out a new drive.  When that didn't work they said it was the ribon cable.  When that didn't work they said oh well have to reinstall you OS.  I was wondering if there is anything ELSE that i can do.  I did that just a few months ago and do not want to do it again.  The problem is so strange, my lower cdrom works, just not the one on top.  The distorsion is heard in every audio program.  The guys at Dell said they have never heard of anything like this.  Help would be appreciated if you can.  I'd say they have followed an acceptable helpdesk route - check software config, then check different cd's, then check different cables (ones that you know work), then put it in a different ide slot/order, then use a drive you know works with problematic ones' HARDWARE and if all fails, it is one of these unfortunate unknows whereby dodgy soldering on the mb or an untracable knick in a cable MAY be causing the problem. attack this sequentially, one at a time - eliminate all factors affecting the drive then tell Dell you reject the goods under the consumer credit act and trades description act (DONT know your rights in the USA), and tell them to replace. End of rant. Good luck. VM.  type dxdiag in the run box this will test your sound..it maybe a sound driver..damage or corupt..does this happen to all cd audio disks...what operating system is this ....I did the dxdiag.  It is not the speakers.  I've switched out the cable that hooks into the BACK.  The other cdrom works perfect in every program.  I think C4 will work.

Solve : Hard Drives Not Detected?

Answer»

Ok, the problem is that my computer is not detecting my two hard drives. Everything was working fine, then yesterday when I restarted... poof... no more hard drives.

The jumper settings are correct, I tried removing the IDE cable and PUTTING it back on, but still nothing. I even went into BIOS and selected Load Setup Defaults. My Primary IDE's in BIOS are on auto-detect, and everything seems like it should work, but they're just not being detected.

It can't be bad hard drives, because neither are being detected, and it just happened after a normal restart. Perhaps my IDE cable went kaput? Any help is greatly appreciated.borrow the ide cable from the cdrom drive and just connect one hard drive at one time...time to test..what is happening on the screen just blank....is this winxp..before you do the ide switch thing? This is the message that comes up during bootup:

Reboot and Select proper Boot DEVICE
or Insert Boot Media in Selected Boot device and press a key

and yes, it's winXPtake the jumpers of and re-boot...does it work? try safe mode f8 key ...also ..windows may have confused its self which hard drive do i boot from?I took the jumpers off both, and now it just sits at a blank screen after the BIOS message, RAM checking etc.Well I tried using the CDROM IDE cable on each one, making sure their jumper was set to master/single, but they each still give me the same message as before... they each had a clean install of XP too, so I'm lost.what is your boot sequence in the bios ?and could this be a gateway pc >http://support.gateway.com/s/issues/151305110.shtmlMy boot sequense is FDD, HDD, CD. I don't think it's a Gateway, my uncle built it just from parts.

I've improved it a little... i think... now my master drive is detected in BIOS, but not my slave, but I still get the same message.

Also, how do I download and install that file that the gateway website says to use if I can't even get onto the computer?try changing the boot sequence to boot from hdd and see if it will boot to windows ...the file in question can fit on a floppy if needed>http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=19164&uid=52436392  just follow the instructions if its relevant to you!silly question have you asked your uncle? That file would be of no help, it's for Onxard MoBo's, I have ASUS P4P800 Deluxe. I changed the boot sequence so that HDD is first, but still no improvement.

Now I'm thinking that the HDD that's not being detected may be dead? I mean, I did something that probably was very bad for it. When I formatted and clean installed XP on both drives a few days ago, it wouldnt let me format my C: (the one that doesnt work now). So, I clean installed XP and DELETED everything off of the drive, in hopes of it acting like a format (I even deleted the windows folder, everything). Did I kill it?

Also, there is something that just confuses me. I formatted my D: drive a few days ago, and clean installed XP onto it. Even though it was formatted and XP installed on it, it doesn't let me boot up using it as a master or single drive. Is there something missing that it needs to boot up?ok the  hard drive your pc detects....re-format it ...go to www.bootdisks.com and download a win98 boot floppy format the drive ..load the boot floppy at the a:\>prompt format c:...then the  fdisk command and change the boot sequence to boot  from cdrom drive and re-install winxp disk... 0 ide drive....... when you have done this then install the slave drive you can always transfer files from it ...using the file transfer wizard>1 ide drive the problem has arose by have two winxps o/s on difference h/drives?windows got confused and the errors came up...time to start from scratch... ;)it seem to be a common problem>http://forums.devhardware.com/archive/t-12252There's one problem though, I don't think my XP CD is bootable. I've tried changing boot sequence to start with CD ROM, but it doesn't go into XP setup. I haven't done anything yet, I'm just saying that in the past I haven't been able to use the XP CD to boot up.

So, I gather from what you're saying that I should format with a w98 disk, install w98, then upgrade to XP?if you use the win98 boot disk  to format/fdisk your hard  drive if you have a full version of winxp the command is d:\>setup enter...if you have an upgrade version of winxp load the win98 install disk and build on it with the winxp upgrade disk..just WONDERING with this post did your hard-drives come from an old pc ?hth and good luck...more info on how to>http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/format_XP.htmAlex23425245...I came in late ....but for the life of me I cannot UNDERSTAND why you would want Win wp on both of your hard drives ......or did I misread what you were saying.
Perhaps you could clarify.

Solve : Sound Card Identification?

Answer»

I am trying to identify the sound card I have in my computer. The only thing on written on it is:  DP-1 Rev:1.0     CE FCC. The chip is UTCWDFF TEA2025. On back is BTI  CFC-FREE 9932. I need drivers but don't know where to look. Any ideas?I believe the FFC website allows you to search by using the serial number.Try LOOKING in device MANAGER and see what windows id's the card as.I had checked it in devices and it was under other with the yellow ! so I looked for it in the registry and it said it had a vendor ID of 1106, so I went to the VIA web site and downloaded ComboAudio_A1u390a and ran setup. It looks like it is installed, no more others in devices, but no sound also. Checked all my sound settings and still nothing. This card does not plug into a PCI slot. It is mounted through the front of the tower and has a flat ribbon cable going back to the MOTHER board. It is not a major brand but was built by someone for a not for profit agency. I am trying to help them out.Can Windows not find the correct drivers for you?

Either by Updating Windows or by right clicking on the soundcard in Device manager and selecting the driver tab? (I cannot confirm this SINCE my Windows XP is a mess at the moment)I just reloaded 98SE and it dosen't seem to have it. Everything else seems fine.Try this http://www.driverguidetoolkit.com/ It is trial software but might give better chip information. If you use it only once and get the problem solved it just be worthwhile.msinfo32 in the run box would have told you sound card etc or dxdiag in the run box ...it will test for sound etc...can you also  check in the bios that your onboard sound is enabled?Found it. Reinstalled from VIA website and it now works. Thanks for the help. You're welcome.

Solve : I need processor help?

Answer»

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and I need help. We want to buy a new computer that we saw advertised for a good price, but we are not sure how good it is. Its a Compaq presario ... Intel Celeron processor 2.70GHz / 256MB DDR SDRAM memory / 40GB Ultra DMA hard drive. We are concerned it will be extremely slow because its not a PENTIUM 4. We already have 2 computers, and we are wondering how this one will compare. The 2 computers that we already have, are Compaq presario 6000 pentium 4 2.00GHz / 512MB / 80GB hard drive & we also have (old model) HP pavilion Intel Celeron processor 466 MHz. Our concern is, how will a 2.70GHz processor perform ? We know it wont even be close to our pentium 4 2.00 GHz, but with our HP pavilion, sometimes we are not even open pages at certain sites. I guess I'm wondering, what's more important ? Having a higher pentium or higher GHz ?

I would appreciate any help. Thank you.The amount of Giga/Megahertz is not the only factor which determines if a processor is fast or not.

2.7Ghz is faster than 2Ghz, however, the BUS speed may be lower, in which case the amount of RAM you have installed may perform more poorly.

I suggest you contact Intel or search their website for comparsiment charts, you cannot tell by just the amount of Gigahertz whether a processor is going to provide you less performance than another one or not.

256MB DDR SDRAM is not a lot of memory, and a 40GB HD is not a lot either. -  I suggest you find a deal that doubles both.
Buying Tips on Computer Processors

Computer Processor Information (CPU)

These ARTICLES may be a tad outdated, but they will give you more insight on what to look for.I am trying to find a chart to list the different processors
and what they have to offer compared to the other ONES, I guess what I’m looking for
is the best processor for my needs.

Thanks
thanks for all the replies.

i guess i'm really wondering, how a computer that has 2.70GHz / 256MB DDR SDRAM memory / 40GB Ultra DMA hard drive, compares to a computer that has Intel Celeron processor 466 MHz / 8.4 gig hard drive / 64 mb memoery. the hard drive and memory are obviously far apart, but i was just wondering how decent the processor was (for everyday normal home stuff / nothing too COMPLICATED ...the only thing installed would be microsoft "office" software.

thanks again

Solve : Compaq presario memory upgrade?

Answer»

I put in a 128mb dimm ram in my compaq presario and its only registering 32mb. How can I get it to 128 MB?can your mobo handle 128?and have you updated the bios...what ram stick was in there before 32mb?trekkie28001...Ram is a pain in the neck....lol
Do you have the exact specs on the ram you took out...
it isn't enough just buy a stick that will fit in the slot....
You need to have the same clock speed ie...... pc66 , pc 100 , pc133 . What type of ram does your pc require ?
It must be a almost perfect match.
# of pins is simple
is it registered or unregistered.
is it buffered or unbuffered
what parity do you need.
If you can find the specs for the MOTHERBOARD in your machine it will spell out exactly what type will work and how MUCH you may install.
Some ram must be installed in matched pairs.
Fromwhat you say .....I almost think you have 2 ram slots and you have the 32 mg stick in one and the 128 in the second one.....your machine sees and accepts the 32 mg stick and boots up .....but doesnt see the second 128mg stick ........ If your ram type is SIMM ......72 pin I think they must be in matched pairs.
Let us know
dl65  What specific machine model?

I have a Compaq Presario 1245 laptop, and I used a 256MB module and it only gives me 128mb, because that's the maximum SIZE module for that particular model.

Solve : Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop?

Answer»

I have a problem with a laptop that I was hoping someone here could help me with. I installed Free AVG antivirus and after the restart I got a Stop screen (BLUE Screen of Death). I FEAL SURE I can fix what AVG screwed up, but I can't get it to reboot. I've tried the power button and reset button above the keyboard but nothing. I also tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete with the same result. This may seem like a very stupid question, but keep in mind this is the first laptop I have delt with. I appreciate any help you can give.

Boot into SAFEMODE and attempt to remove AVG from there. Thanks for the reply. I guess I didn't make myself clear. Sorry about that. The problem was I couldn't get it to reboot. I was stuck on the STOP screen. I finally just took the BATTERY out, replaced it, and booted into save mode. Thanks again for the help.

Solve : printer serial port connection?

Answer»

My computer's PARALLEL port has gone bad and I am attempting to connect my HP LaserJet 4P printer to the computer using the serial ports and am looking for directions for doing same. How about HP?  Personally, I'd buy a $10 parallel PCI card and do it that way...
I called HP but they said the printer was out of warranty and they do not support it, even for a price.  I asked Circuit City about a new parallel port, but they said they would have to replace the motherboard.  If I was smart enough to do it myself, I would be able to connect the serial ports. You should be able to buy an add-on card that will provide a parallel port. There are also serial to parallel adapters AVAILABLE. CHECK this siteGet a generic IEEE1284 parallel plus RS232C serial ports PCI card from PriceWatch or NewEgg for $15 to $25 and disable the mainboard ports that don't work to free up the IRQ and I/O addresses. Then run the printer from the new port on the card...

If you need to use a serial port connection, find out the specific cable config to use for the printer and run the cable (usually a custom terminal-to-terminal cable), then use DOS MODE to direct PRN: to that serial port in DOS. Again, the dead MB printer port should be disabled in BIOS. Then set up Windows to handle the printer via serial port. Remamber that RS232 serial is rather slow compared to IEEE1284 parallel or USB2 or SCSI, the other faster printer connections...

Solve : Laptop Monitor Failure?

Answer»

I have an Hitachi laptop thats about 8 years old. The monitor will not COME on but when I plug into an external monitor I can view the screen. What might cause this and how do I get the actual laptop screen back up?
Thanks,
Blookahhas the slider/ screw knob  on the side of the case been turned down?Another possibility could be with 8 yrs of OPENING and closing the laptop, the ribbon/flat cable from th MB to the screen has FINALLY given up the ghost. All it takes is one control "wire" to OPEN up.  Look at the "F" KEYS across the top. One, possibly two, will a symbol representing a monitor. If there are two, one will be for the backlight and other will be for monitor select. Hold down the Fn key and press the monitor select key. You might have to press it more than once. You can select laptop monitor, external monitor, or both. You probably have external monitor selected.

Solve : Malicious .dat files?

Answer»

My daughter download some shareware onto my computer. I now have a new folder on my hard drive (31MB) that is a duplicate of my C: drive. In this folder I have multiple copies of my C: drive (9x). When I do a virus scan it GIVES my risky files located in this folder. I tried to remove it, but it wont LET me remove a file called gmgr0.dat which I did a file search and it is located in this new folder (9x). Any advice on how to remove it without wiping my WHOLE drive and starting over? That file is associated with a service on XP machines. Does the 9x mean you are running Windows 9x or is it name of the folder?Restart in DOS mode, the fill will be unlocked. For those that responded, Thanks.  #1 It doesn't run Windows 9x, or is it the name of the file. It's a New Folder in my C:/ Drive that is duplicated file for file (9x), Everytime I open the New foldrer I see the same files as the last one. They all are the exact duplicate of my C:/ drive.
#2 I'll try the DOS mode and see if that works. The associated service is BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service). Normally it would only be used on a server. Deleteing the files under DOS will only get them recreated. Type services.msc in the run BOX and disable the service. You should then be able to delete the folders.

Solve : Onboard Videocard nonexistant??

Answer»

I am currently using a computer that has been neglected for at least a year. Or two.

The problem is that whenever I move the mouse or type on the keyboard, the monitor starts flickering. I have tried reinstalling drivers for the Nvidia MX/MX 400 videocard (64MB) this made the flickering a little less for approximately a few days, but the problem decided it did not want to be RID of this easily.

I also tweaked the monitor settings, refresh rate, resolution, etc, this did not make a difference. I also checked for magnetic sources near the monitor, I believe two speakers have been relatively close to the monitor for a long time, however, I cannot tell if they are magnetically shielded. They cannot seem to be powered on.

(This is another issue, since there is no power cord leading from the speakers, they seem to be powered by the soundcard.)

I then noticed by reading the manual that there is supposedly an onboard videocard, however, I cannot find anything related to an onboard videocard in both the BIOS and Device Manager. When I tried booting with the monitor connected to the Onboard videocard (A S3 Savage I believe) it only gave me a blackscreen but booted normally (No errors).

I would like to test the onboard videocard, however, if I cannot enable or disable it, I would not know where to start.

I could remove the Nvidia MX/MX 400 videocard, but I cannot seem to open the case. (Only took a quick glance at it, really not my problem what goes on in there) so I think it would be best if I disable the onboard videocard to see if that is causing problems.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

Also, the speakers donot seem to work. Apparantly, they are powered by the soundcard. However, since it is an onboard soundcard, does that mean they will never function? It could be that they stopped working due to being neglected for quite a while.

If there is an onboard video card as well as an "added" card you should have 2 VGA ports at the backWhich you do - sorry I shouldn't scan read so quick  I can help a little on the speaker issue though - below is  a quote  from

http://www.thecomputershow.com/computershow/news/howtobuyspeakers.htm

Speakers are divided into passive and amplified speakers. As you might have guessed, passive speakers are not amplified while amplified speakers are amplified. In a passive speaker system, your sound card provides the AMPLIFICATION. Amplified speakers do not need to use the amplification of the sound card and therefore have the advantage of simple use. The sound is too loud or too low, simply turn it up with the volume button on the FRONT of the speakers.

The speaker problem here is that they will not even be powered, I am guessing that it is due to the onboard soundcard that is not able to PROVIDE power to the speakers. It is an AC'97 Audio (5.1 I believe) whilst having connected are two very cheap (seemingly) Labtec speakers without additional powerplugs.

And yes, this computer does have two VGA ports on the back of the computer - however, I cannot find any reference to the Onboard videocard in either the BIOS or Device Manager. If these are "old" passive speakers they should also work from an additional Sound Card as this is connected to M'board and can draw the power for the speakers.

You could try them in another computer as it is possible the speakers are the problem. Is it possible someone updated the bios to one for a very similar board without onboard video and then had to add the additional video card.

You could try reloading the bios for this Mobo.I only have to disable the onboard videocard to see if it is causing this videocard to cause the monitor to flicker whilst typing or looking at websites or other types of windows.

There is no additional soundcard installed, only an onboard.

Are onboard soundcards unable to provide power to 'passive' speakers?Bumppassive speakers should run from an onboard or an additional sound card

- can you try the speakers on another computer to see if they work and try another set of speakers on the soundcard to see if that works

I could do that, but my computer is still not functioning properly. - I will give it a shot when I got everything working again.just out of interest what motherboard is this....(I am no longer using that PC)

Solve : Can 2 Video Cards be used at once?

Answer»

Ive got a maxi gamer Xentor 32 agp card in my computer atm.  Recently I have been able to get ahold of a digital video camera and am looking for ways to capture it.  Found an ATI all in wonder 128 with video capture but the xentor is a BETTER card.  Can i put both cards in and just use the ati when i want to capture something?

Yes, you can. However, you did not mention wheter they are AGP or PCI cards.

If you install an AGP card on a PCI slot it will not operate at full capacity. Same goes for a PCI card on an AGP slot.

Useful articles:

AGP

PCIxentor is agp and all in wonder w/capture is pci...how would i go about setting it all upI have no experience with dual videocards, however, I assume that you would install them like you would individual cards.

The AGP card goes into the slot that usually has a slightly different position and colours and the PCI would go in one of the slots where most likely your soundcard is connected.

Then you install drivers for both, ofcourse, reset before installing the other drivers otherwise you may not be able to boot Windows properly..

Perhaps SOMEONE can tell you more, I suggest you search for a guide or contact technical support to see what they can tell you.WARNING: Switch the power switch on the BACK of your power supply OFF before working with AGP Video Cards, RAM, or the CPU in any system! If the PSU has no AC switch, unplug the PSU! The RAM, video card, and CPU are connected to +5V-STBY and will be damaged if tampered with while +5V-STBY is active.

Win98SE and later support dual video cards/displays. You mount the video cards and install the AGP card as your primary, then use Display Properties and the EXTRA tab you get when you activate multiple display to arrange your screens. You can use the second display for simple text-only, append its display to your primary monitor, display part of the primary monitor on the SECONDARY, or use each monitor for independent display...

Don't block the AGP card GPU fan with the secondary card, and consider that the AGP card often shares its IRQ with that nearest PCI slot...

Solve : My PC turns off by its own!!?

Answer»

Hi everyone. The REASON for my post is because I can't seem to find any solution for my problem, I've tried everything.

Everytime I turn on my COMPUTER after some time (like 12 hours), the computer shut down by its own after 3 - 7 minutes. Then I restart the computer, and the problem doesnt appear again. The first thing  to turn off is the hard disk, and while the hard disk is off, the monitor and the CPU are still on, with the "Windows is shutting down" screen on the monitor, this takes about 15 seconds.

My OS is Windows 98, 256 RAM, 40GB hard disk (only a year old), 500 MHz AMD K6 processor with a brand new cooling fan,  my "Power Management" options are to never turn off anything, I have disabled both power profiles at the STARTUP in the Configuration Utility (hopping that is the cause...) and  I have performed a lot of virus scans!. No problems with all the data cables that connect the disks to the mother board. No conflicts detecting all the hardware connected to the PC.

Thanks for your time, any help would be apreciated.
is the power supply unit up to it?...check all the bios settings?or is the switch on the FRONT panel faulty..just suggestions...I had a look alike problem on a Packard Bell pc.
The mother board COMMANDS the power supply to switch ON or OFF.
I replaced the power supply and the problem was resolved !

Hope this helps.

Solve : video card problems maybe?

Answer»

Just got a new computer today from cyberpower inc.  I was UNABLE to REACH their tech support at all so far today.  I TESTED 3 different monitors on the computer and none of them get any signal.  From reading on here I gathered that it is probably something wrong with the video card, even though its brand new.  Is there any way to determine what is wrong with the card or to fix it easily? You can try to:

  • Replace the videocard
  • Insert it in another slot (If it is PCI)
  • SEE if it is inserted correctly
  • Test this videocard on another PC

However, since you recently obtained the computer I suggest you return it and have them install or give you a new one. You may damage your SYSTEM and be forfeited warranty.I got through to tech support.  He wanted me to take the video card out to listen for beeps.  I told him that I didn't know how, so he had me take the memory out instead to listen for beeps.  I did and there wasn't any beeping when I turned the pc on.  So it may be the motherboard.  Guess I have to send it back.

Solve : trying to find cd & dvd drive on my computer?

I have  a Sony computer. The dvd & cd drives were working fine now they can not be found. They don't SHOW up in the explorer.   They have power to them both.  Any suggestions?toc423.....It is highly unlikely that 2 cd drives failed at the same time....so I would be looking for another cause. Possibly the problem is the cable which connects them to the motherboard.....is it a wide flat ribbon type?

I have unistalled / re-installedSounds LIKE your flat cable on your secondary IDE channel has come loose or fried, or that possibly your ATAPI/IDE secondary channel on the MB has fried.

First make sure the BIOS settings are set to run both IDE adaptor channels on the MB. The setting could have become CORRUPT. Reboot and see if they recognise.

Then, try just using a different cable. If the drives work right now, discard (or scavenge for hookup wire like I do with damaged ribbon cables) the dead cable.

If they still don't recognise, disconnect each drive (one at a time) and see if the other drive recognises. If this allows one drive to recognise but not the other, you have a dead drive, dump the bad CDROM or DVD.

If neither drive recognises on the second channel and you have only one HD, set both drives to Slave (check your HD, and set it to Master with slave or Cable Select as appropriate, if it is Cable Select set the CDROMs to that also) and try them one at a time as Slave devices. If both work, you can get a PCI IDE card to run them on. Promise Technologies sells a series of PCI IDE cards ranging from basic channel for running CDROMs to enhanced IDE cards that add 4 or 8 EIDE UDMA133 drives and/or SATA drives to existing systems. If the secondary MB IDE channel is toast, disable it in BIOS to free up the IRQ.

If the CDROMs don't recognise in one setting (Slave or Cable Select), try the other.I am some what of a neophyte with the computer lingo.  I am not sure what you mean by" First make sure the BIOS settings are set to run both IDE adaptor channels on the MB"

Solve : cannot install OS?

Hi Guys,

I just built a new athlon xp system. I have a seagate 120 GB DRIVE. When i boot up its detects the hard drive and other components properly and I boot up from Windows 2000 prof CD but it gets stuck after the inital OS Setup SCREEN. Its a new hard drive.
Thanks for sharing any of your experiences.Be specific about the make/model of all the equipment.  Also, is this an IDE or SATA drive?  If it's SATA, you need to load the drivers early in the install or it'll hang at the first reboot.
Its an athlon XP 2800 with 333 FSB and 512 MB DDR 3200 ram. Seagate Drive is ultra DMA100 IDE(120 GB) and setup as primary master and BTC DVD RW is set up as secondary master. 1.44 floppy drive and radeon celestica 128 MB video card. I have tried another western digital drive(120 GB) but it gave same issue. It reaches the windows 2000 setup screen and reboots itself.
ThanksDid you format the new harddrive before installing the operating system on it?BIOS is recognizing the floppy drive and using the hard drive installation CD I boot up in DOS but there is no format command with it and when try to switch to floppy drive , it says not ready error reading drive B. The floppy drive LED is continuosly on even if there is no disk in it.

i CURRENTLY have an AMDK6/233 PROCESSOR and i know i cant upgrade to athlon 64. What is the best processor i can use on that same motherboard?Refer to your mainboard guide or AMD technical support. It depends on the motherboard.  The fastest chip you could expect to work would be the K6-2/366.  Both are Socket 7 and 66MHz BUS speeds.  Not worth the upgrade, UNLESS you're positive your motherboard will support it.  More MEMORY (>256MB) and a faster hard drive (7200 rpm) will make a much bigger difference.

Solve : system stalls?

Answer»

Recently I have noticed that when I am using my computer, every so often it will stall for about 2 seconds, and then continue normally.  This doesn't happen very frequently, only about a few times per day.  I'm fairly sure its not because im overloading the SYSTEM, because it doesnt just happen when im playing games.  It also happens when I'm just browsing the internet or listening to music.  It seems different than "freezing."  It's more like its stuck.  When it happens when I have music playing, it sounds like a CD skipping, it gets stuck at one point for about 2 seconds and then resumes.  What could be causing this problem?Maintain your PC on a regular basis.

Defragment the harddrive, clean the registry, remove redundant files and scan for viruses, adware and trojans.

An inadequatly maintained PC will show signs of slow downs and other problems.

That is a modest temperature - nothing to worry about.

For that I want to remove this BIOS password and fix this problem whit my computer....
Are there somebody who can help me to fix my computer or not.....I think you can reset the password by removing the password jumper on the mobo, then restart and shut-down.  Replace the jump before the next start-up and the password should be gone. You can TRY to reset the BIOS by either shortcircuiting the jumper usually labeled CMOS Jumper or by peeling out the battery and removing it for 10 seconds before attempting to place it back. Donot use tools, you may damage your mainboard. If you rid your hands of static electricity, not much can go wrong UNLESS you start to become careless.

Solve : external laptop hard drive?

Answer»

Hi,
I was wondering if a laptop hard drive would work on a desktop pc, right now I only have a 6gb internal hard drive and my friend is flying over with a BUNCH of games I want to install on my computer.

I FOUND an external hard drive case on eBay, it connects via a USB cable and is supplied with a power adaptor, i sent an e-mail to the company selling it and they said it works on any computer as long as there is a free USB port.

3.5" external hard drive cases are to expensive and these 2.5" laptop ones on eBay are dirt cheap so are the laptop hard DRIVES, the reason I ask is because my motherboard is an oldie and it doesnt accept very big hard drive capacities so connecting one via a USB cable should work.
can your old mobo handle extract  usbs pnp devices?you may have to flash the bios to do this...and a laptop hard drive maybe better used by using an ide ADAPTER via an ide cable?Doesnt matter, I just bought a external hard drive off ebay, by the looks of it there is already an adaptor INSIDE the case that fits snuggly in the back of the hard drive, right now I have 5 free usb ports and I already updated the bios. Thanks anywayYou can get a cheap IDE adapter that will allow your laptop HDD to go into a regular PC.

Solve : -cmos battery, cpu, bios? help me...?

Answer»

let me try this here:

over the past few weeks my puter has been loosing time and days - so, i know it was the battery - was just trying to get life out of it until i had time to go get another good one.  well, over the past weekend, the kids kept playing thier neopets all through the "tropical pain in the butte" that we had here.  I never lost power (one of the lucky ones), but did have a few surges.  After the 2nd-3rd one, made the kids turn it off - just  didn't want to fry anything.

when we went to boot up on Tuesday, I can't even get through a post test.  turn it up and you can see the fan spinning and the PSU is fine.  sometimes the HD even seems to start.  once a day - i can manage to get past a post - once got into the bios but all settings looked fine - even though i changed out the battery - but then the screen garbled up and froze and couldn't get back in.  the next day - my kid thought it was ok - booted up, even got to her neopets - but alas - the screen garbled up and froze.

I have unplugged things, plugged back in one at a time.   tried a "working HD" in there, switched BATTERIES, pulled the cmos jumper, pulled out various cards.  so far - nothing.  theory has it I may have fried something - but not sure what - does anyone have any ideas?  any there any beeping when booting?not a soundgo back into the bios...and chose setup DEFAULTS...option..save and exit..if you can...what ram have you got and mobo/bios/graphics card..Did you replace the CMOS battery? i know its and AMBIOS, AMD, not sure of the MOBO, and Diamond Stealth video card.  but the question remains - when i turn it on - i only have one shot at it - after that - nothing will happen - no video, no post beep - nothing, nada....also tried pulling out memory - one stick at a time - (64 and a 128 stick repectively) - so i don't think the memory fried.  My only thought so far is that maybe something fried anyway - but am a bit confused - because it originally was the battery - which i changed...(all this coming from a network support tech - lol!) you metioned powers surges i wonder if you have damaged this>http://www.fact-index.com/v/va/varistor.html in your psu....definately and interesting idea - nothing i ever learned tho - where would that be located?  i am at a point where i have changed / TRADED / unplugged everything except the cpu itself - which i guess i will try over the weekend - if no other ideas come to mind.

on the other hand - i have an old presario that i could try to get up and running....another question - another day..   just a question  or two when you installed this video card did you upgradeand how long has this vid card been installed for..video card has been in there for a while - no bios flashing going on here either.that maybe the main cause of you problem....but not flashing the  bios...you said it was an oddie pc?maybe it was not cmos battery but it needed a bios upgrade...maybe worth looking into.......TAKE out the vid card...go into the bios if you can and enable onboard graphics...try it..this may or may not work..thanx - will try these things next and post more tomorrow - or tonight should i get back on!   i think the problem is the graphics card...have a good look a the graphics card for tracking/scorch marks or any burning.....to add more to this did the keyboard lights stay on >num lock.didn't pay attention to the keyboard, and will check graphics card tonight.  but - i went home last NIGHT and managed to get through post, get to the bios and reset default settings - then when the screen went back to continue booting - nothing.

Solve : how to print a pdf document??

Answer»

Can't print a PDF document sent  by emailYou may need another tool than Adobe Acrobrat Reader. I believe that is for reading only.

I suggest you BROWSE through http://www.adobe.com and LOOK for advice thereAdobe Reader should read and print.
Have you got Adobe Reader installed - this is the program you need to view and print pdf EXTENSION files. It is available free here

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

If you have the viewer installed I know from experience they do not like viewing/printing whilst the file is still attatched to the email and are best saved to the HARD Drive to view/print

I installed a new MOTHERBOARD because the old one kept having PROBLEMS seeing the hard drive/ide.  When I started up with the new motherboard it was working beautifully but I decided to run a restore on the hard drive to start with a clean slate.  Now I'm getting the same error as on the other mb.  How do I get my SETTINGS back?  I tried to manually put in the hard drive settings but it won't take.maybe the hard drive was a FAULT in the first PLACE and not the motherboard....what is the  make of the hard -drive?also a faulty ide cable can cause this problem?try swapping the ide cable over...

Solve : compaq 5340?

Answer» http://  ok - here's another question.  until i get my good one running right - a friend had given me a compaq - it was supposed to be used for parts, but after messign with it, and fdisking - loading my own windows into it, seems to be fine (especially after i cleaned out all she had in it).

problem - it already has it's own nic card, so why is it that when i plugged in the cable, NOTHING will detect it, and it won't go online.  I've never encountered this before, i've ALWAYS ended up with puters that i've had to install nics on myself - not the pre-built ones.. Quote

That does not make sense. If you were to take out  the card and PUT it back in ,you would have installed it yourself, wouldn't you?

Can you be more specific as to what the problem with the card may be? Is it onboard? Is it damaged?

If it is not functioning PROPERLY, install the drivers or replace it?Go to control panel/network and see if the nic is listed. You might require drivers or set up the bindings.for the record - i did all the binding stuff - turns out to be the stupidest thing - how about unplugging the modem - turn off the PUTER, and turn it all on again so the nic detects it!!!!!!    (just incase anyone asks....

Solve : Laptop sound quality for DJ music????

Answer»

???SOMEONE told me that Running a computer DJ setup would have better sound quality if I use a desktop or rack mount computer instead of a laptop.  Can someone tell me if that is true?  Are the sound cards different or better in desktops?desktops have an advantage over laptops...power wise?it just not the sound CARD but the software that used?If you really want you can use different speakers than the ones built into your laptop?...I think, I can for the desktop atleast, and then you could you speakers that draw their own power from an outlet.

For example I have my computer sound come out of a home thater system, or the actual speakers, depending which is powered on.Speakers aside, the quality of sound is most noticable with the actual MP3's or whatever FORMAT you are using. TRY ripping a track at different quality and you'll see what I mean.

Apart from that, destops are generally tastier under the hood than laptops, although nowadays the differences won't be too noticable. The advantage you have with a desktop is that they can be upgraded, where laptops have most of the stuff directly soldered on to the motherboard.

Out of curiosity, is this a personal setup or are you DJing in clubs? I ASK this because if it's the latter, I doubt you want to be carting a PC, monitor, keyboard etc with you to each club... I am considering using a computer for a DJ setup at small clubs etc...  I would carry the bulkier equipment if it meant getting a professional sound quality.I think you're better off at a forum that covers sound quality and equpment.

Solve : Video Card not Working?

Answer»

Greetings...

Well I fixed  most of my problems already except on one comp the video card is still not working. I am running a gForce 4 (MX440-TD8X) video card. The problem is that when I start up the computer I get a "No Signal" message. Now I checked all the connections and even changed the monitor. What I did not do yet was change cards. However during startup the videocard fan is running. If anyone has any suggestion or anything else, please help out..

Thanks,
CybermonkChange videocards or take out any other PCI cards that could be non-compatible with your videocard.

If your fan runs, it means it is provided with power, it does not quite mean that your videocard will work 100%.Raptor....

I changed videocards the same problem...There are no other PCI cards in place. I have no clue what the problem is...this is a new mobo which i switched the old one for...

I'm not a novice and understand a lot...but this just escapes me.

cybermonkgo into the bios and see if you graphics card is enabled?and all the pnp devices...when you had this new mobo did you use the install disk for it?I think that accessing the BIOS with a 'No Signal' error is quite easy. But navigating may prove to be a problem, Merlin.

Did you try using a different slot? If it is an AGP card, I believe you can test it on one of the PCI slots.since when does an AGP card fit in a PCI slot? when was the last time you took apart a P.C. and merlin since when can you navigate through bios when you don't see anything?for most peoples INFO> most graphics cards are built in to most MOTHERBOARDS with the option if people chose to plug in another graphic card...therefore when you plug in your video card ...your pc has alocated the on board card< irq>..? best option take out the CMOS battery for five minutes...*with caution.*...and replace it...why do you think people can add more hardware like a graphic cards etc ram this may depend on the motherboard specs < ;Dpnp >....the options are there for people to use if they WISH to do so.... software first...hardware next...accept ram sticks... Last time I opened a PC, it was still working. Can't say the same for you.

I never tried inserting an AGP card into a PCI slot. I have no idea if it will fit. I assumed you have tried or at least measured before TRYING to be smart.

Solve : Installing 3 drives...?

Answer»

I'm trying to install 3 hard drives into my machine.

I don't KNOW what the jumper settings are MEANT to be.

I have 3 hard drives:
ST31720A (Not sure, either Primary Slave or Secondary Slave.)
ST3290A  (Not sure, either Primary Slave or Secondary Slave.)
Fireball (?)  (Primary Master)

How do I get it to work?you make a choice of which hard drive you want as the master...NEXT the slave...and the third...which you can have as the primary master..instead of  a CDROM drive..all via ide cables..

Solve : Printer Will Not Work?

Answer»

i don't know if you all FOLLOWED my processor/windows problem, but guess what? now my printer won't even work, it SAYS "printing started" then it goes up to 99% and just sits there, and at no point was a PAPER going through my printer, it's just sitting there, this is wonderful, i got a computer and a printer for college and NEITHER is workingwhat printer usb/serial.....what make is it..load the software first then attach the hardware......start again...remove the printer from the device manager and re-boot.now shutdown remove the printer from the pc ...unplug it .now load the software then attach the printer with the power on....done..the  reason for this shutdown/restart..is to clear the IRQS from the system...i used the troubleshooter thing, that was a series of questions and like "yes this worked" or "no it didn't" and it goes on to another thing, ironically i fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling the software for the printer, which wasn't one of the suggestions in the troubleshooter... oh well, i guess my crappy computer just screwed up the software.
