Solve : CPU Keeps Locking Up?

Answer»

I have a Gateway desktop, runs on Windows ME.  Been having PROBLEMS with it locking up off and on.  So I was running diagnostics often.  Now it's locked up on the desktop but doesn't completely show the true desktop, e.g., the screen is black when it should be white; the icons are there, but the mouse and system immediately LOCKS up and won't move and the keyboard will not work anything.  I tried the ctrl+alt+del--nothing.  I have to push the reset button each time to power down.  When I reboot it runs the scan disk, then GOES to the desktop and locks up, as described above.

Can I bypass the desktop to run diagnostics?  If so, how?  Besides going out and buying a new CPU, can anyone SUGGEST what I should do?BlackCat007
" So I was running diagnostics often." So is that how you came to the conclusion that the CPU is the cause of the problem ?   Have you tried booting into the safe mode ?   Perhaps you should consider a format and a clean install of ME . Unless you know something we don't .........I WOULD guess the problem isn't the CPU.

Solve : monitor screen help?

Answer»

My monitor has tilted 90 degrees clockwise...how do I...untilt it?More info and someone will be along shortly to assist...Lay it on its side and live with it, or...

You can at LEAST tell us what you are using (model #'s, monitor, graphic card, PC, OS, etc.).

Chances are your graphics card/driver or your monitor is (MIS)configured for this mode.

But, that's a wild guess based on my supernatural powers of MIND contact.

DellThere was a previous question or two and solutions which were very simple. Search on the forum for 90 or monitor and see what you find.

The answer is so simple it will amaze you, but I forgot what it was!!!

Solve : CD problem?

Answer»
Cd drive suddenly stopped working. Will not see any disk installed. Hangs until finally times out. Device manager will see the drive with no errors. I tried different interface cables and 3 different drives, with no success.
I m running XP Pro SP2 AMD 2500 on a home built system. NEW ideas excepted.Hewitte:

Have you RECENTLY added any new hardware or software?

In Device Manager, try clicking the Troubleshoot button and following the SUGGESTIONS to try to figure out what is the cause of the problem.

Let us know how it turns out.

DocThe only thing I can think of is, I de-installed  Nero 7 demo-software.  I have not installed any new hardware or software. Device manager does not point to any errors. It sees whichever CD drive I install. CD Rom or DVD. Quote

Hewittfe:

Uninstalling the Nero CD burning software could prevent your CD drive from working if.  If the Nero Clean Tools don't do the trick, try reinstalling the device drivers for the device.  Do you know how to install drivers?

Another alternative may be to reinstall the Nero demo.  If your CD drive works after the installation, then you know a component of the PROGRAM (e.g., a device driver) is needed.   If you then choose to uninstall the demo program and you receive a warning message that a component may be shared by other programs and are asked if you want to keep that component, indicate that you do want to keep the shared component.

Let us know how it goes,

And or you can try this...go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...find the CD devices and right clik them and select Remove.
Upon re-boot WINDOWS will automatically re-install the drivers.Fixed. Un-installed CD drivers, let Windows re-install and looks like my drive is ok.

Solve : 167 error?

Answer»

Hello people...
I've just recently INSTALLED a new motherboard into an IBM netvista 2257 b4u. Its running a PIII PROCESSOR..... when the machine starts to boot up, I get the 167 no processor bios found. I've gone to IBM, and downloaded the new bios updates for the machine. I insert the diskette with the flash into the machine...it wont even let me get that far..... as soon as the machine starts to boot up, I get that error.
any suggestions? That is USUALLY an incorrect processor that has been installed for that motherboard.

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4BAHK2Hi GX, thanks for your reply..... the board thats being used is made specifically for the CPU...... the board is a replacement from IBM.... the origional was a factory defect..... the capacitors had swelled, and were LEAKING. IBM replaced it under an extended warranty.I would carefully remove that CPU and check for bent pins...if none are found demand a new MBoard.

Solve : monitor-vertical pincushion?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with the adjustment on a Packard Bell monitor.  It will fluctuate between a normal picture, and an expanded one with the SIDES bowed inward.  I tried adjusting the controls on the monitor itself, but it only fixed it temporarily, then it 'sproinged' back out to the distorted screen.  Is there anythingI could try to lock it into the correct screen size/display?  I have seen this SEVERAL times with defective/intermittent solder joints on the output amps of monitors.  This is where most of the heat is developed outside of your CRT.  When cool (at turn-on) the display may behave normally until the monitor gets to normal operating temperature.  Then, anything can happen to your display including intermittent pincushioning.

It may or may not be your problem, but your description makes it a possibility.  Most will also smell of overheating if this is the case.

If you think your monitor problem is the same, have it repaired or replaced before you have a fire!

DellHow would I DETERMINE what other monitors would be compatible with this computer?  I am having trouble locating any Packard Bell information on the web for this country-USA! I have possible access to a Hewlitt Packard monitor, used, which is more feasable than buying an entire system solely for the monitor.A Packard Bell computer or monitor in this country would be ancient. They haven't made anything here in a loooong time, although I hear they are alive abroad. It might be ancient i agree but it will probably run on your machine...monitor incompatibility is FAIRLY un-common.

Solve : changeing hardrive?

Answer»

hi i hope someone can help me i have a compaq deskpro pc and want to change the harddrive in it i got it open but cant figure out how to GET the harddrive out to REPLACE it, i have contacted compaq but they say they cant help me unless i pay for help because the pc is out of warrenty so i dont want to pay for this pc is not mine  and my friend doesnt want to pay either can you please help this is the hardest pc i have ever tryed to work on thanks and have a great dayIt would help to have a model number. And, once you have the model #, you can also download (for free) step-by-step installation and troubleshooting instructions from HP here:  http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

If you have any problems with the procedure, tell us exactly what happened and give us details on the drives and your PC.  Otherwise it's guesswork.

Dellits a compaq deskpro en system with windows 98 i cant get inside ti didconnect the harddrive and install a new one i got thee outer side off and can see the internals inside i need a manual to show me how to get the harddrive out and i ahve been to that web page and  it doesnt help methat was suposed to of said dic conecct the harddrive
well i cant type at all it was to say disconnect harddriveSo you are replacing the whole hard drive? I am assuming you know what a hard drive looks like:

Please note when you change the hard drive you will have no OS or any old data on it anymore:

Removing the Hard Drive: Notice the a gray LONG cable that connects to both a CD ROM and to a hard drive. You have to unplug everything first of course.

Then you need a scre driver to remove 4 screws on the hard drive. They are located on the sides of the hard drive. Be gental as if you break a screw it can be very hard to remove it.  There are 2 on each side

If sucessful the drive should easily slide outwell yes i know what the hardrive looks like and how to change them i just cant get this one out i have the cover off the pc but i cant get to the screws on the other side of the hard drive in order to take it out. believe me this is the hardest one ii have ever seen to get outAre there some green handles on it? Two screws and it slides out from the top. (It is on a movable rack and comes out towards the top of the machine.well it has some green handles on the other part of the pc but where the drive cage is it has a green thing that has like slots but they wont budge and on the other thing it take out the thing where  the cables are connected to like cdrom floppy and so on even after that i cant get to the hardrive, and on the other side of the outer caseing  i cant get it off there is no screws or anything and that is the problemWell, I'd like to help and so would others, but you just won't/can't  tell us the Model # of your PC.

The Compaq website provides the installation and setup manuals for every PC they manufacture now or recently.  They can be downloaded for free here:  http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/deskpro/us/index.html
You will need the Model # of your Compaq Deskpro EN series PC to get the information.
I'm very surprised that it didn't help you.

Without the model # I'm guessing that you have a standard slide mount drive.  If so, you need to bend the ends of the plastic slides so that it will release.  No screw removal is necessary.  But this is a guess without the model #.

I'll bet if we had the model # your problem would have probably been solved long ago.

Delli cant find the model number on it anywhere i do have the serial number if that will help all i know is its a compaq deskpro en seriesWhen you boot it and press F10 it should give you this info. Also, Belarc can analyze it - free at www.belarc.com Quote

well yes i know what the hardrive looks like and how to change them i just cant get this one out i have the cover off the pc but i cant get to the screws on the other side of the hard drive in order to take it out. believe me this is the hardest one ii have ever seen to get out

Sounds like you need to take the other side cover off and put your cross-head screwdriver through the holes in the inner plate which supports the mainboard, as you would have to do with a CD-ROM drive or a floppy drive.

DRIVE

With my computer the drive stands on end and is fitted behind the front plate with the wiring connectors at the top.

To remove it I have to pull the front cover off by hand and remove two screws to be able to take the left-hand side-cover off.

I then have to remove the four screws on the FRONT plate which hold the drive in place but which screw into the base of the drive on the circuit board side, rather than into the sides.

My Floppy, CD-RW and DVD-RW drives are fitted in the manner shown in the picture above.

Not all computers are the same.

Solve : BIOS upgrade trouble?

Answer»

Hello: Let me first give information on my system: PIII 650Mhz CPU, PC Partner ApolloPRO 133, slot1/socket 370 motherboard with VIA VT82C693A chipset, W144H clock generator, Super 133 Support 133Mhz System Bus chip, board ID 35-C957-01-22, 256 MB RAM. I am using WinXP PRO SP2 as my operating system.  I have had no problems with it ever since it was purchased. Two days ago I decided to do a flash BIOS upgrade just for the sake of doing it and to see if it will improve the performance of my machine. I did a thorough research on PC Partner's website and downloaded the flashing software (AWDFLASH) and the correct BIOS (V1214AG.BIN) for my specific motherboard. The reflashing was successful and during the reboot I updated the setting in CMOS by loading default values and saving it to CMOS.  THE PROBLEM: When I shutdown my computer the power-on indicator on the case stays lit. There is no more display on the monitor after Windows shuts down but the LED stays green, indicating that the video card is still sending some signal to it. I opened the case and SURE enough the cooling fans to the CPU and video card were still running.  I was only able to turn it completely off by using the main power switch at the back of the computer or pressing down on the soft power switch at the front for about 5 seconds.  I reverted back to the original BIOS but the problem is still the same.  I can still use my computer though without any problems except for this one.  Another peculiar thing: Before and after the BIOS upgrade my machine will detect my ASUS CRW-523AS during POST and will continue to boot normally. Now the machine can still detect it during POST but it will hang a few seconds after the Windows splash screen will come out (running indicator bar will stop and there will be no HDD activity). Has anyone experienced this?
---IrwinHi guys:  I was able to finally sove the problem by doing a Windows INSTALLATION repair. Even if I use the new BIOS the problem has not come back. It was actually an OS problem and I would like to share this to all of you in case this HAPPENS to you too. Frequently it is the solution.Hey! I flashed my BIOS last week just for the *censored* of it and it only changed the boot screen!

Thanks for letting us know!

Solve : DVD drive not closing?

Answer»

Hello.

The DVD Writer drive for my pc won't close.  Whenever I press the button to close it or push on it by hand, the drive will close temporarily and the tray will then pop out again.  When I reboot, the tray will will close in, but as soon as XP boots up again, the tray will pop out.  When I power down the pc, the drive will close and remain shut.  But as soon as I power up the pc again, the tray pops out.  Even if I put a disc in the tray, it won't even PERFORM an initial read of it and the drive will pop out.

I believe this all started when I put in a brand new DVD-R disc.  The brand was a Sony DVD-R AccuCORE (1x-8x/4.7 GB).  It says on the label "Always check if your device is compatible as using this disc on some drives/recorders might damage the disc or device."  Their website (www.dvdhs.com) was neither helpful nor clear.  Is it possible for a DVD-R to damage a writer drive, or am I assuming the wrong cause of this problem?

I tried UPGRADING the firmware for all of my hardware components, but one of the firmware updates (HLDS GWA-4162B 16X DVD(+/-)R/RW DL Drive Firmware Update) seems to require a floppy disk or writable CD.  The pc doesn't have a floppy drive and the writable drive obviously isn't available.  I'm not even sure if this firmware upgrade pertains to my drive (HP upgrade programs will tell you if they do).

I have an HP Media Center PC m7070n running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition.  The cpu is a Pentium 4 3.20 GHz with 2.78 GHz 1.00 GB PC2-3200 DDR2 RAM.  The DVD writer drive is an HP DVD Writer 640b, and the DVD ROM drive is an ASUS DVD-E616P3H.  Everything is OEM.

Under the Properties\Driver window that I pulled up from Device Manager, the DVD driver information for the Writer drive appears as:
Driver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date:  7/1/2001
Driver Version:  5.1.2535.0
Digital Signer:  Microsoft Windows Publisher

I have no idea what's wrong with the driver date.

If any more information is needed, then please let me know.  Do you think I should reinstall the device?  I only know how to do it in 95/98 whereby you just delete it from Device Manager and just reboot.

I apologize for the long-winded post.  I would greatly APPRECIATE any help provided.Either your drive is bad or your system is misbehaving.

How to check the drive (mechanical door check):

- disconnect the data cable, but leave the power cable connected.  Power up your system.  Does it STILL OPEN?  If so, the drive is bad.  If it doesn't misbehave, it is likely a problem with your system or configuration.

How to check your system for drive door problems:

- with your drive connected normally, boot your system in safe mode.  If the door opens, your IDE controller or connectors are bad.  If the door stays closed, then either background processes or your drive specific drivers are bad/conflicting or corrupted.  In normal mode, disable all unnecessary processes, especially 'drag to disk' or other DVD/CD specific programs.  Try reloading any DVD writer specific drivers.

- you should be able to remove the drive in device manager and have your system redetect and reload the drivers at bootup.

If the above doesn't identify/solve your problem, let us know what you did and where it failed.

DellShoot.  Apparently, the drive must be bad.  Isn't there any other cause that it could be?

How could this have happened?  The pc is only 7 months old and I only burned ten discs.

So I guess there's no other way to repair the drive.  Any suggestions for a replacement?Lite-On. About $40 at newegg.comYour rather new HP PC and the peripherals that came with it should still be under the manufacturer's warranty.

If you opt for a different drive, I'd personnally recommend the Plextor PX-716A DVDR or a derivative model [<$100/BestBuy].  The price is mid-range, it handles up to double layers, can be user tuned and for me, a real workhorse.  I've burned 100's of DVDs and CDs and have had exactly 2 failures (due to bad media, I suspect).  It usually ships with great bundled software too.

When I purchased this drive several months ago, it was rated in the top ten (mostly #1) by almost every rating system I could find on the net.

I also recommend you avoid drives from manufacturers who also produce content [S*** for one].  They are notorious for built-in copy protection and software (read malware).

DellI fixed the problem.  Apparently, something small had gotten lodged into the drive.  Fortunately for me, it finally came out after I tried a CD write test while using a bundled diagnostic program.

Of all the stupid causes, this was the one I expected the least!  I used a flashlight to check inside the drive earlier, but couldn't see anything.

Coming on here for a solution was like asking a cardiologist for help with a cold.  I'm sorry to waste your time.

The irony was that the media obviously had nothing to do with it, and it was it was stupid to think so.  I was using some Memorex discs before, and out of 10 writes, three were bad.  I switched over to something else and it's working fine.

Thanks for your help.Glad to hear you got it solved ! What type of little bugger did you find in there anyway ? ?

patio.  A rubber washer

I have no idea how it ended up in there.  Even more strange, I have no idea how it came out.  I probably tilted the tower when I was opening up the case.

I guess I lucked out this time.  I'm just glad I finally got more organized.

with a hd enclosure,  where do you set the jumper on the pc hd and where on the ext. hd?

You will find the jumper located on the rear of the hard drive ......and there should be the option of setting the jumper to :

  Master
  Slave
  Cable Select

DL65  jjon:

Hmmm, i never thought of that.  The hard drive enclosure LETS you connect an IDE HDD via a USB port.  My guess is the jumper setting would not matter, but i may be wrong.

I trust you can see that by READING your question .

Solve : What motherboard do I have????

Answer»

I can not figure out what type of motherboard I have. Can anyone help me??? I have a Dell Dimension 2400 DESKTOP. Intel Celeron 2.4GH. System chip set = Intel 845GV. I have looked on the motherboard but it does not say what it is and I also KNOW nothing about them so any help would be appreciated. Thanks dell has a pretty good support system (as long as you don't have to call them).  on my dell, there is a service tag number - not sure if the older ones have one, but i assume they do - head on over to www.dell.com, head for support pages, when you put the tag number in you can learn everything you need to know about your computer - just don't ever try to call them!   This program that I used PROVIDES a detailed report on everything you have in your computer. It also provides URL's for vendor websites to update bios etc.... check it out it's also free...
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=1  Ok I used the lavalys program and got this:
Motherboard ID = DMI.
MB Name = Dell Dimension 2400.
Bus Type = Intel NetBurst.

So I still don't know. Or am I seeing it and I just don't realize it??? Quote

...Or am I seeing it and I just don't realize it???

Your motherboard is a Dell Dimension 2400.  Dell is big enough to get mobos made to their specs.

You can get a MoPo motherboard if you want to order 10,000.
I have no clue what that means???!!!MoPo....What is it about your Dell MOBO that you wish info no ? Perhaps the EASIEST way would be to call Dell .

dl65  Dell has their own motherboards made for them, usually from intel and it is impossible to buy the exact one if needed. There are replacable boards, you have to measure your board to fit the case.If you need a new motherboard you can go to the intel WEBSITE and spec one out to match your cpu and case dimensions.

Solve : Computer Randomly Turns Off?

Recently my computer has started having problems, SOMETIMES it has trouble booting up (it will get almost booted and then restart for no reason) and other times I will just be on my computer and have it click off suddenly. My power cable is connected and isn't loose, so it's not that. dl65  Well, I just got over a similar problem.... Have you installed any new hardware lately?

[glb]Flame[/glb]it could be a virus, but i have the new avg 7.0 antivirus, so i assume i'm clean. and yes, i have installed new hardware recently. i just got a new soundcard two weeks ago and a new video card a few months ago, i've had a second external hard drive for a while.Sure sounds like hardware.  Is external hard drive powered from computer or does it have it's own power supply?  Could be new sound card.  Maybe computer power supply is pushed to the edge of its limits.external has it's own supply, it's powered by cord, but i never thought about all this crap being too much for the power supply... are they difficult to install, i may look at getting a new one...I had a computer do this.  It turned out to be an intermittent short on a hi-power sound card.  Power SUPPLIES are short circuit protected, so what looks like a power supply problem could be something else.  Put your old sound card and old video card back in and see if problem goes away.well, i don't have the old video card anymore, but the old sound card is built into my computer. i checked out my power supply though and it is only 185 watt, which my friend said sounded kind of low, especially for the stuff i've hooked up. By jove.......I think youv'e hit the nail on the head .
.....185 watt sounds a wee bit small , especially if you have added hardware ......I'd be looking at about 350 watts.
let us know how you make out .

dl65 cool, thanks for all your help, i'm going to best buy todayby the way, you don't think i could have damaged anything while running that low of a power supply do you? everything appeared like it was running normallyI think I have the same problem too... I have a 430W power supply and my computer worked fine before I instaled my new 200gig hard drive and my ATI RAdeon 256 ddr AGP... when I run too much programs, it sounds like it will reboot but no... it continues running (it does the SAME sound as when  the computer reboots ou shuts down) but slows everything and eventually will freeze the computer... that's waht I now have in my case with a 430W power supply:

2.8 ghz Intel Pentium 4 processeur
ASUS P4P800 motherboard
1 gig RAM Kingston 400 mhz DDR (2 x 512)
ATI Radeon 9550 256 meg DDR AGP
Creative sound blaster 5
Western digital 120gig
Western digital 200gig
Maxtor 40 gig
Floppy
LG DVD writer super multi
firewire card pinnacle
430W power supply
and 3 auxiliary fans on case

maybe it's my video card that's not compatible with the motherboard.... *censored* computers!!!

Also, when I boot, it never been so long to pass the drive detect. And I just remembered, the problem started with my DVD drive that could not be opened, had to push the reset button of the drive... I just WANT to be sure that it is the power supply before buying something else... because I changed the DVD drive thinking it was th eproblem and with the new one it continued... I unplugged a fan and those silly neon lights and the drive worked fine but problems continue to occured so I unplugged the 200 gig drive and the computer went better but still not working as supposed to... when I more than one program at a time it slows down or even freezes... with that weird sound that sounds like a reboot or shut down sound....I have a great computer acting as an old crappy 486

Solve : My printer's acting weird?

Answer»

Hello! HOPING for some pointers. My printer STARTED having trouble printing. When I print the test page, all that prints is the Windows logo in the upper-left hand corner. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and its drivers with no effect. Has this ever happened to anyone? Could it be a Windows issue? Is this an injet printer?  If so, black cartridge is out of ink or not working.

Windows logo is printed using color cartridge.  Remainder is printed using black cartridge.Boy, do I have a red face!!

My printer never had an alert so I assumed it was a different problem.  Boy do I feel silly!  I guess nothing is too BASIC, right?

Thanks a lot.

KirstenI think one of your cartridge has ran out. Check the ink using utility, usually PROVIDED by the company of your printer(If you have color printer). But first TRY your printer on some different PC to confirm that it is not windows problem.

Solve : Hard Drive Beeping?

Answer»

Hi, I just RECENTLY posted on a BIOS problem that had orccured in my computer. I reset the BIOS and the computer is working properly now. I just tried to put my original Hard Drive back in, and the computer will not detect it. When I boot the drive makes a beeping and clicking noise for about 30 seconds. I originaly thought that this was the beep code, but HEARING that it beeped about 35 times, I ruled that possiblity out. I tried reformating and reinstalling a new OS, but it said there was no Hard Disc CONNECTION.

If any one could help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you to all that have helped me.HDD's do NOT beep...if the beeps are short and continuing you have CONNECTED something improperly and or unseated a connection. Re-check all your connections including re-seating the RAM and vid card as well.

patio.
I reseated the RAM and Video card like you said, but it's still not detecting it. I tested the system with other spare HDDs, and they seem to work fine. I have also noticed that my floppy drive doesn't power up durring the boot process, although im not sure if that has any relevence.Oh, and I forgot to add that the beeping noises are not continuous and end after the system has finished its attempt at detecting a HD.Use a magnifying glass under a good light and look very CAREFULLY at the drive connectors for any bent pins.

Solve : HP LaserJet 3330 Driver Installation Problem?

Answer»

Everytime I boot up in Windows XP Home SP2, I get a FOUND New Hardware notification for Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing support and HP LaserJet 3300 series PCL 6.  When I attempt to install the requested driver, the following message appears: "The software you are installing for this hardware has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.  Continue Anyway or Finish."  When I click Continue anyway, I am then given the message "The file 'HPBF332E.DLL on HP LaserJet 3300 Series Drivers Disk is needed.  TYPE the path where the file is located, and then click OK."  The installation defaults to Copy files from F: (my MAIN drive) Windows\inf.  The file is not in that location.  I have both located the file on the original installation disk and downloaded it from the HP driver site.  When I attempt to install the driver, I get the message "Cannot Install this Hardware.  There was a problem installing this hardware Generic IEEE 1284.4 support.  An ERROR occurred during the installation of the device.  Overlapped I/O OPERATION is in progress.  Click Finish to close the Wizard."  In spite of the fact that I then get the message that the printer may not function properly, the printer functions properly from Windows XP.  The printer is connected directly to the PC vis the USB port.  How can I resolve this issue.

I have a P-III 1.2G with 512 MB, and a 80G & 40G HD.A lot of HP USB printers have this problem which is all software/installation related. Does the printer function, aside from the messages at most every reboot? Have you completely uninstalled the printer and software and tried again? If you do, you must install the software first, then reboot the machine and then plug in the printer and turn it on.http://www.flamingo.ro/FTP\HP\Imprimante\LJ%203330\Spanish\Drivers\Win2000\PCL6\hp332Ep6.inf

Download this driver again, just to make sure.
remove any *.inf files related to HP, uninstall any HP software located on your machine.

When you start windows, make sure the usb cable of the printer is NOT-CONNECTED!, after XP has started, run the Driver Installation which you have downloaded from the link above, when it'll ask u to connect the cable, connect it.
If it does not ask you, thats ok..  install the driver package, ,after u installed it, reset your pc.
while booting, connect the USB cable from your printer into the computer.
When windows will start, it's supposed to recognize the printer and install it automatically since all the drivers has been installed already.http://Correction

download the driver from here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=66367&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=66359&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=228
Select the appropriate one for you, and follow all the instructions I wrote above.
remember , DO NOT connect he USB to ur computer, only after the driver installation is finished, reset, and then connect, unless, while the driver installation it asks u to connect the cable.
good luck.

Solve : Wireless Mouse Battery Level Problem?

Answer»

I have a Microsoft Wireless Optical MOUSE with Mouse Driver Version 5.20.413.0.  Everytime I boot up in Windows XP Home, I get the following message: "The wireless mouse BATTERY LEVEL is low. Replace the batteries soon so the wireless mouse will continue to function properly."  I have replace the batteries several times with quality batteries, but the message continues to appear.  Now I just click OK, and the mouse functions with no problems.  I also have the matching Microsoft Wireless MultiMedia Keyboard 1.0A.  I do not get this message for the keyboard.  The Microsoft Wireless Desktop Receiver 1.0A is connected directly to the PC via the USB port.  Any suggestions as to how to correct this erroneous message?

Computer is a PIII 1.2 with 512MB, and 80G (64.5G free) & 40G HD (4.8G free).  The OS is on the 80G HD.  Software programs include Norton AntiVirus 2005 & Zone Alarm Pro 6.0.667.000.This seems to be a similar kind of USB problem as your other post. Do you have another USB mouse to test with? Can you uninstall this device in device manager and then restart the machine and let it pick it ub again?

Are you using separate USB ports for each item, or some sort of hub?

Solve : expansion slots used for scsi adapter cards?

Answer»

Can any expansion SLOT be used for scsi cards?what is the spec of your computer?

the only slot PROBLEMS can be ISA if you have an older computer or PCI for almost all newer computers,
do not put the scsi card right next to an AGP or PCI EXPRESS graphics card slot as they are often paired leave a slot spare between them and that should be all.
if you have a WINDOWS xp system you might have to do a repair installation to install the card drivers.

Solve : 32 GB bug?

Answer»

Some time ago I purchsed a 40 GB hard drive Maxtor. Because my (DAEWOO CB650M-BX) motherboard bios was not up to date it did not RECOGNIZE the 40 GB drive. I had to set the jumpers to only report 32 GB. Now I have the drive in a new PC and you like to remove the 32 GB clip to USE the full 40 GB, but I am concerned that I will lose data already on the drive...

Does anyone know what will happen if I remove that clip?
its highly likely you will not see the data after changing the jumper as the "master boot record" MBR will change and the data could then be over writtten.
can you not copy the data onto another drive first or the important stuff onto cds or DVDS

Solve : Black Screen And No Bleep!?

Answer»

Please can someone help me.

My computer has always been fine, but the other day, I turned it on, and the fan kicked in etc, but the screen stayed black, and didn't seem like it was connected to the computer. I thought it might have just been monitor cable that CAME out or something.

I left it that night, and tried again in the morning, MAKING sure everything was plugged in properly. It started ok, in safe mode, but then it just randomly restarted itself, and then the screen stayed black again like before. Not it was hit and miss whether the screen would stay black, or come on, but because of having to do the hold-the-power-button-for-8-seconds switch off thing, when it did come on, it said that a file was missing or corrupt. To cut a long story short, it now won't come on at all, so I don't have the opportunity to fix it. It is definately not a monitor problem, cos I have borrowed a friends computer, and it works fine with this monitor.

How do I even begin trying to fix my problem, if the screen is black? (Also there is no bleep at the beginning, and I am running XP).

I have files that I REALLY need on there, so any help would be very very gratefully received!

Many thanks in ADVANCE for any replies posted.
kop442000.Hey there.... I think that your heat sink might be broken... You can replace that, and be fine... Also, incase this is not a hardware related issue... Do you have antivirus PROTECTION installed?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yeah. I am no expert, but as far as I know, I have all the latest updates, and virus protection etc..

What is a heat sink, and can I just buy a new one?

Sorry for my ignorance!

Kop442000Hello how are you? First of all take the RAM sticks out from the motherboard and clean the dust from both RAM sticks and also from the slots of RAM on the board. Now put the RAM back in the same sequence as they was. Now turn ur PC ON. If it works then fine otherwise you have to take the PROCESSOR out from borad (CAREFULLY)and clean the dust from Processor fan, from Processor and lso from the Processor slot. Then place all of them back in the same manner as they ws. Now turn ur PC ON and it will start running smoothly.
Insha Allah .
Otherwise you have to replace Processor fan or CPU Cooler bcz may be this this problem is due to over heat of Processor. But I do hope that if you do all above, will solve you problem.

Take care of you and others and be happy.
Bye...
Dur-E-WahabThank you for your advice. I have never messed around with the inside of a PC before, so I will make sure I read up and know what I am doing first. Thank you again.

Solve : After replacing power supply computer doesn't boot?

Answer»

Just recently my power supply started making an aweful noise because one of the fans was going.  I turned the computer off and removed the power supply and all of the connections, I replaced the power supply and now when I tun on my computer the lights go on but the monitor won't turn on, if I press the power switch on the monitor the monitor will start to power on and then shut off right away.

Can anyone help me with this?  My old power supply was a 550W and the new one is a 400W (though that shouldn't matter).  When I was checking fans for noise I thought it was the CPU fan, so I took it out rather harshly (the way it was held on made it very hard to remove), is it possible I knocked it out of place or wrecked it?  Orrrr... did I just forget to plug one connector in, I plugged the mobo connector, the other 4 pin connector on the mobo, the floppy power, the disc drives and hard drive 4 pins and  the ribbon cables for the disk drives and hard drive.  I am very sorry for the spelling mistakes and typos, I FORGOT to use spell check and unregistered users can't edit posts.  (and the keyboard on this computer is horrible)If the CPU fan got damaged in removal it's possible it is not LETTING the board power up fully...this is a built in fail safe to avoid damage to the CPU.
Does the CPU fan turn at all ? ?
Are you getting any beeps when you power up...if so how many and how long ? ?

patio.  If you dont see the VIDEO card at start up .  It means the CPU aint turning on or its fried.  if you have an old Power supply TRY it to see if it will boot with that.
Maybe your new PS is frazzed.  I've heard of new PS's being bad.  SC  I tried removing components one by one out of the computer, and I don't THINK the power supply is the problem because the computer does the exact same thing with the old and the new power supply.

the monitor doens't turn on when i boot no matter what I do.
Without the video card, the computer still boots nothing (though everything spins).
with only the mobo power connector it does the same thing.
with every power cable it does the same thing (except the drives that are plugged in start)

The CPU fan is still going, but I don't think it's going at full power.  I think the problem is with my cpu, I think it's damaged.

Solve : Getting USB 1.1 speed out of my USB 2.0 port?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I just bought a Vantec NexStar 2 3.5" Drive Enclosure (USB 2.0) and installed a Western Digital 200gb drive in it. It's now a portable harddrive. The drive works flawlessly but my problem is whenever my computer detects the HD, Windows XP says it's a High Speed USB device in a USB 1.1 port. I do know for sure that I did plug the HD into a USB 2.0 port, according to my mobo's instruction manual.

My mobo is a Asus A7V333 with the VIA KT333 chipset. I have a Anthlon 1800+ processor and 512 megs of DDR333 ram. The new HD is plugged in the LOWER USB ports.

So can anybody help me figure out this speed problem?I just updated my BIOS and Chipset Drivers and I STILL have the same problem. You have 2-USB 2.0 ports and 2-USB 1.1 ports.  Look at the user manual.

http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7V333&Type=All

P. 24 shows USB-EN jumper on pins 1-2 to enable USB 2.0 operation.

P. 30 shows 4 USB ports.  Looking at the back of the motherboard, the 2 on the left (NEXT to the keyboard and mouse ports) are USB 1.1, the 2 on the right are the USB 2.0 ports .
So it's just a problem to have to do with Jumpers? I was aware that the bottom ports were the US2.0 ONES, but I didn't figure you needed to change some jumpers. I'll get back to you guys to see how it worked.Default postion (USB 2.0 enabled) is supposed to be pins 1-2.  Jumper is at very bottom of motherboard.  From left to right pins are:  1-2-3
Place jumper in 1-2 position.Well the jumper was at postion 1-2 when I OPENED up my comp. I changed it over so that it's at position 2-3 so that the comp would become USB2.0 compliant according to the manual. When I rebooted, no USB devices were being recognized by Windows XP. I know that they're working correctly though because I saw that my mouse was still powered.

I therefor set the jump to it's original position of 1-2 and now I can use my USB devices again, but they're still set to USB1.1 mode.

I'M sure that I'm using my USB 2.0 ports.

Any more help?

Thanks a millionContact Asus.Crap...

Thanks anyways.

Solve : Cd Burner Quits During Burning?

Answer»

My CD burner which has always worked fine in the past is having issues where it will burn about halfway through a playlist and then the burn will cancel.  I've tried slowing down the burning speed, I've tried using different CD brands, I've tried several burning programs and they all act the same.  It seems to be able to burn 22-25 minutes worth of music just fine, but the discs are 700 MB/ 80 min. and the burner has burned much longer discs in the past.  It plays cd's and dvd's fine and I can burn data without any trouble.  Any suggestions??There are several possible causes for your problem.  Without knowing what you are using (PC, drive, hard drive, software, recent changes, etc.) or how you are using it (external, multi-tasking, etc.), the following are several guesses:

- The drive may be BAD or intermittent.  Check the drive, cables, connectors, power, drivers.  Clean the laser lens. Try another drive.

- check your system.  You may not have have enough system speed or other resources to write with your drive at its CURRENT settings.  Run some simple tests included with most common write software (Nero, Roxio, etc.).  Make sure you have enough buffer SPACE to prevent underruns.

- make sure your system is not the cause of overheating, underpowering or other seemingly unrelated causes.  Check for background processes that might CRASH your drive.  Temporarily turn off as many unnecessary programs as you can, such as anti-virus, office processes, networking, etc.

The fact that your drive worked in the past hints that something has changed.

Solve : Disk Boot Failure when powered on.?

Answer»

Just instld Windows XP on new pc. Restarted pc and after diagnostics screens i get message: Boot from CD: disk boot failure, install setup disk.  i am unable to get any further. After prompt I have inserted windows xp disk and DRIVERS disk but no go. I did not install drivers prior to restarting if that makes a difference.

I set bios to boot from hard disk but no go.Is this a full version of XP?Yes, full versionI set bios to boot from CD and inserted Win XP.  Computer started right up. But the computer is unable to boot from hard disk.  I guess I will have to boot from CD rom everytime I cut on pc.

The hard drive did not come with new pc. I purchased pc as barebones. Hard drive came from older computer.  Could the HD be damaged?Yes, the hard drive could be bad or intermittent, but...

You say you've already INSTALLED XP on this drive?  How did you do this without installing drivers?  If this is a boot drive from another PC, it probably won't WORK!

Have you set it up as the boot drive?  Drive configuration and bios recognize the drive?  Did you format the drive first?  What format are you using (NTFS, FAT32, etc.)?

DellJulie Keating.....  Usually when you take the HD containing the O/S from one pc and install it on another it will not work .......unless the old mobo and hardware configuration is similar to the new one .......So to make life easy ...I would suggest .......SLAVING the hard drive in question on another machine and wiping it clean ......then with a clean hard drive .........put it back in the other pc ......set 1st boot to cd-rom, put the XP in the cd rom and restart ........Your xp cd should be bootable and will load up for you .

dl65  okay my computer wouldn;t turn on because i unplugged the power switch cable, and plugged it in wrond, i unplugged it cus i read somehtign that said might have a bad connection adn should unplug everything adn plug it all back in. so now my compute turns on, beeps adn turns off. i got rid of the bad memory card and put the old one back in adn i'm still gettign the beeps and shut downs.. i dont; know my mobo type and i put the original memory back in but i'm still getting beeps and shutdowns, no videoand the fan was on the video card because thats where i put it when i'm working on my computer so it isn't in the way. i am supposed to put it back on the PROCESSER, but i sometimes forget adn turn the computer on, nad it shuts off until i put it badck and disconnect adn reconnect the mobo's power supply aaronme2...... okay. i want to play a game. but i requires more memory. now i'm not computer savvy so i didnt; know that i can;t put any old memory in. so ifound some in the office and tried to install it. during installation i had to take the fan off becasue it was getting in the way. i set it on the video card. so after i put the new memory card in, i forgot to put the fan back on the processor. so when i turned on my computer it turned on without any beeps but the fan failed adn my computer shut down. on my computer when i do that i have to unplug adn replug my motherboards power supply adn that allows it to stat up again after i put the fan back. so i did that and i got these beeps, and no video. so i came her after 4-5 trys and saw that someone else had a problem like mine and one of the 'expert' people told him to unplug evethign and plug it all back in. so i did that and when it came to the power and reset switches and the led lights for the front of my computer, i unplugged them and reconnected them wrong. then my computer wouldn;t start up at all. so i fixed that. now i have a bigger problem. i put the old memory back in the right spot, and now when my computer starts it makes 5-8 beeps, then shuts down, until i restart it, where it does the same thingaaronme2..... LOL .....pardon me for laughing ......but I conjure up a mental picture of a guy opening up his pc and throwing out the bits and pieces and disconnecting the wiring ......and the caption reads ....... "I read somewhere that its a good idea to check all the connections"

Ok .....lets start with the basics .......Can you tell us what kind of a pc you have .....a model would be nice and then we can find a motherboard manual and confirm that the wiring is correct and also it will tell us what kind and how much ram it will support .

4 short System timer failure
5 short Process failure

Solve : Sync out of range?

Answer»

Hi,

Compaq System worked properly with Win 98.

Then OS system was upgraded with Win XP Pro.

System now not working properly with error message on trying to load Win XP stating "Sync out of range" with info about H & V hertz etc. A colourful box in the middle of the screen and it just freezes there.

Is this a problem with the video card driver or the monitor driver? I would have thought XP Pro would have ALLOWED all settings set in Win 98 to remain intact (and not uninstal as I read elsewhere).

Thanks for any help

AdamThis could be caused by the resolution being too high. If you can, try booting into safe mode. Right click on the desktop-->Properties-->Settings. Lower the resolution a bit.

An alternative is to go into the BIOS and change the monitor setting there.

Good LUCK.  The Compaq I have has onboard (INTEGRATED) video with no settings in the BIOS and no jumper to disable it.  No dedicated video memory.  Has Intel 82810 video controller.  I changed it from WinME to Win98.  HP/Compaq had almost no drivers for Win98.  Got drivers from DriverGuide.com.  Found video by using Intel utility "chiputil.exe".  At least this Compaq has a "real" BIOS.

No wonder Compaq went out of business, making oddball computers like these!!Lowering the resolution did not work, since in Safe Mode, the resolution is set to default minimum.

The solution was the monitor driver. The system had a standard plug-n-play monitor INSTALLED, but no driver. The monitor type was a Compaq MV520, and the driver was designed for Win 98. A revised driver came through later on to work with Win XP Pro. So installing the updated driver solved the problem caused by the OS upgrade to XP.

AdamAnd btw, I couldn't find the BIOS info. relating to the monitor (as like Commando said), and I must admit I was a little uncomfortable about that!

try going back to safe mode, right click on my computer, click properties, then hardware tab and then click on device manager. click on the + next to DISPLAY adapter, then right click on the item that will show under display adapter, click uninstall, then follow the on screen instructions until display adapter is completely gone. after that restart your computer normally.

Solve : Don't have a USB port, but need one?

Answer»

I'm getting an iPod Shuffle, which apparently only powers and updates through a USB port.  My PC laptop does not have a USB port at all, though it has Firewire and a place for some type of card (I think it's an Ethernet card SLOT.)  I've looked ONLINE (and asked people I know) about what I should get to solve my problem of not having a USB port, but I've confused myself with all of the options for USB cards (do they go in the Ethernet slot?) and USB to Serial cables (I'm not sure if I have a Serial, uh, place.)  I know I need USB 2.0, and it needs to be ABLE to power the iPod shuffle.  Can someone help?  I'm looking for the cheapest solution.
It's called a PCMCIA slot ("place for some type of card").
You can purchase  PCMCIA USB cards in a variety of flavors.  Just check the specs on the cards as you look at them.  Make sure they are USB 2.0 and will provide adequate power over USB.

You will also need to make sure the card is supported on your operating system and comes with the APPROPRIATE drivers.

Here is one for about $25.00, but you need to make sure it is compatible with your laptop.

FireWire and no USB?  What is make and model of laptop?
Apparently, I'm completely hopeless when it comes to computers -- I found out LAST night that what I THOUGHT was Firewire was actually USB.  Oops -- thanks for the help, though!

Solve : Bad trackball????

Answer»

My friend has an AST Ascentia 810N and his trackball won't WORK right. He can move the cursor up and down but when he turns it left or right it won't move. I tried it too, and I figured out that if you push on it REALLY hard it will turn. Is it BROKEN or can it be FIXED? We've tried taking it out and cleaning it but that only made things worse. Can you give me any suggestions that I can e-mail to him? Thanks!

Solve : MONITOR NOT GOING ON WHEN START????

Answer»

Hey my newish computer i bought came with out a grapphic CARD so i bought one and inserted it. its an HIS radeon 9200 series 128mb one. at first when i inserted it into the back of the computer the little LED light on the monitor just blinked. when i unplugged the monitor from the PC it said no signal so it cudnt be the graphic card cud it? but i kept trying and it worked. now all of sudden the screen had red lines on it and froze. so i restarted it and now the MONITORS LED is only blinking again and not coming on when i turn the pc on.

any one know why this mite be please?

thanks v much!

Jamie.k  What you see might be caused by many things.

The most likely causes:

- the card you just inserted may not be seated fully.  Take it out (PC power disconnected) and put it back in making sure it is fitted and seated properly.

- the connector to your monitor cable may be loose.  Inspect the connector for bent or broken pins and replug it into your graphics card (PC power disconnected).

- the graphics card may not be compatible with your system.  Make sure your Bios recognizes it and the initial settings are normal.  You should disable your onboard graphics.  Make sure your system meets the minimum recommended requirements for the card.  Make sure you have installed all/any drivers and operating software that came with the card (CDROM).

- the graphics card may be bad.

Dellhey thanks 4 reply.

Jamie.kBig graphics cards place a high demand on PSUs, perhaps your PSU is not up to the task.orite well its a 200watt power supply.

wot size PSU should i have for a 128mb graphic card?

thanks . Jamie.ko no sorry its 300watts max power outage....

jamie.kYou didn't insert it with the machine plugged in or (gulp) turned on did you?

Is that a name brand power supply or a cheapie, or one that came with the case?http://www.extreme.outervision.com/index.jspwith the machine power on? probz. wots gulp ? lol

the power supply is a CWT (channel well technology) one.

Thanks Jamie.kjk47.... Quote

i will try it with the power of from now on..
Oh , no .......that sounds like you plugged in the card with the power on ........"from now on"... may be too late for this card ........
YOU NEVER plug anything in with the power on ....your just asking for trouble ...and you may well have found it .......  I would be testing the card in a known working pc .......it may be toast .

dl65  Plugging the card in with the power on very likely damaged the card or mainboard. I AGREE, time to test it CAREFULLY on another system.

Installing the card without uninstalling and then disabling any built-in graphics in the BIOS or uninstalling any previous graphics card could also damage something.

Solve : HELP! with Power Supply (simple question)?

Answer»

I'm new to the whole computer THING, and have a really simple question (i think).

I'm getting a new video card, NVIDIA GeForce 6600, to replace my AGING card. My current power supply (250W) is no where near the capacity I need. I'm buying a 450W, will it fry my motherboard, or in any other way damage my computer??
My mother board: FIC VC19
Pentium 4 CPU 2.53GHz and 1GB of ram (nothing fancy i know)

I just want to know if my computer would WORK fine with a higher voltage power supply?
http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/A 450 watt PSU will not cause any damage to your system. I would advise you though, to buy a quality PSU and not an el cheapo. A cheaply constructed PSU, regardless of its wattage rating, is a WASTE of money and might provide less service than the 250 you have (which you know is inadequate).

Higher wattage does not mean higher voltage, except for stability.I wish I had a 1000 Watt power supply or better still 2000 Watt.

Solve : Trying to load windows to a 200gb HD.?

Answer»

I have got an Advent 3209 PC with a 40gb master and 30gb slave drive.

I have recently bought a 200gb samsung HD and although I can successfully set this up to be the slave drive, I am having problems installing windows on it to make it the master.

I have disconnected all of the other drives and only have the 200gb one installed and the jumper settings are set as the master.  I do not have a stand alone copy of windows XP as the PC came with recovery disks that install it.

When I try to run the recovery disks on the 200gb HD I get a "cannot open GHOSTERR.TXT" error after a few seconds.  It then states Internal error 27049 An internal inconsistency has been detected.

I have successfully used the recovery CD's before so I don't think it is a problem with that.  I also thought that the 200gb drive may be too big so I have partioned it.

Any help at installing windows onto this would be greatly appreciated.Problem is that it's looking for the Ghost images that are stored probably on a hidden PARTITION on the original boot drive...
Why not re-introduce the master and hook up the 200 as slave and use the DISK utilities that shipped with the drive to clone the original HDD to the 200G ? ?

patio.  Thanks, I'll give that a try.More info on system pete.....

HUH ? ?The restore disk will probably not install after any hardware changes are detected to prevent installing the wrong drivers with the wrong hardware.

Installing to your old drive and cloning to the new drive may not work either. Windows will try to start up with drivers already installed for the wrong hard drive. I recently tried cloning 1 drive to another and it didn't work for that reason. If the drives are similar, it may work. wouldn't work going from a Seagate 80GB EIDE to a WD 250GB SATA. A stand alone copy of XP may be required. Thanks for all of your help.

I've now decided to leave my original drive as the Master and have the 200gb drive as the slave.  This is currently working fine so I don't really want to mess about with it any more. The wiser choice!Definitely the best choice.

I remember asking the industry if they would supply all Desktops with a high performance Master 20 GB drive and allow the customer to choose the SIZE of the storage drive.

I also asked if all XP computers could come prepared to use 4 x 1024 MB RAM modules and be fitted with 1 x 1024 MB as a starting level so as to reduce parts, manufacture, tooling and handling costs to give the consumer a good deal.

Nada.   Quote

It's a great idea!  But, anyone want to lay odds on how much room the next couple of operating systems are gonna need?  Remember when 100 mb or less was enough for your windows OS and all your programs?  20 gb may not be enough in the future!

Another great idea!  In fact, that was how my latest PC was EQUIPPED when new.

Solve : Whining hard drive?

Answer»

The hard drive in my 10 year OLD PowerBook (yes, that's right, an APPLE PowerBook) is making a WHINING noise. It STARTS out quiet, but after it's been on for awhile it starts to get louder and louder. Sometimes it takes longer to spin up than usual. I should also mention that I dropped it around 5 months ago  , in case that will give you a clue to what's wrong.Hard drive BEARINGS are going bad.  Backup everything because it's going to die, soon. That's what everyone else said. Just wanted a second opinion. I'm not going to back up anything because there's not anything worth backing up. When it dies it dies. Thanks.
-JohnSee if you can obtain diagnostic software for it. Just for kicks.I know this is a little late now, but does anyone know where I could get diagnostics software for 680x0 Macs?
-JohnThe diagnostics should be for the HDD itself, not necessarily a Mac. Travel to the drive manuf. website.

Solve : mouse on while pc off?

Answer»

I RECENTLY had a new motherboard (Sempron 2800) installed , replacing FIC P4m Pentium in a Tiny package. I now find that the mouse (PS/2 ?) STAYS on when the pc is turned off. The installer doesnt seem to know quite what the cause is, but assures me that it will be ok to leave it as it is. The mouse works perfectly well, but it bothers me that it is not quite right.
Any suggestions?  I have 2 computers that keep the mouse light on, I've never worried about it, but now you have me interested so I'll check it out.At least on some newer systems/mbs, PS/2 ports are powered while the computer is off.  This is intentional to allow keyboards with power keys to turn on your system.
For some, even a USB mouse adapted for PS/2 will stay lit.
Remove power to the PC (uplug it or turn off the power strip) if you don't like the setup.

Dell
Or someone else may answer it for us.
Thanks Dell.  Thanks for the replies - all seems to be well so I'll just ignore.
I did wonder because the pc switched itself on a COUPLE of TIMES soon after I got it - fixed with the HELP of the service line, and I thought that maybe it was a similar occurrance.

Solve : hook up 2 computers?

Answer»

I'm a total newb to this.  I have a hp pc w/ WIN xp and an old hp pc w/ win 98 i believe.  Is it possible to hook up both of these computers?  I want to use the old pc as additional space or whatever.  ThanksSure, you need to setup a home network.

Here is an article that might HELP you understand where to START.  http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,102461,00.asp Ken......It's easy ........get yourself a 4 port router........MAKE sure there is an ethernet pci card in each of the pcs and your done .

dl65  Total newb I apologize.  Do your suggestions apply to this, what i wanna do is use 1 monitor, then use the 2 towers that i have.  If you want to be able to store files on each that are accessible to the other then yes.
If you just want one monitor, one keyboard, one mouse and not share files then no.

To use one monitor, keyboard, and mouse you need a KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switch and 2 sets of KVM cables.  You local computer store will have this stuff.  (You might be a bit surprised at how much one of those cables is THOUGH).

If you want both shared files and hardware then you need both, the home network and the KVM switch.
