Solve : Exreme Security Annoys me a lot.?

Answer»

Hey Google!
Hey Microsoft!
Please stop annoying me with you bogus security stuff.
Uf I can not use it, it has no value at all!
It has taken be two days to get my wife's Microsoft account fixed. It should not have taken 5 minuets . OK, I am slow, so maybe TEN minuets.

Just now I got the same hassle with a Google account. After a big fuss, it asked me to change my password without any evidence that the password was compromised. It was unbelievable. It sent me a text message that was blank. So then i called me and I got a mechanical voice that gave be six digest. Took twice to get that right.

Am I the only one? Maybe not.

Most Annoying Security Request

How about you?
Wasn't your system demonstrably compromised by trojan backdoors a month ago, which resulted in your Amazon account being compromised?Good catch there, BC_Programmer, but Geek-9pm does bring up a situation that I suspect many have some sympathy with.

The thing about a lot of the security notices all sorts of companies program is the language is sort of machine-like when actually the message is supposed to be for a human.

I worked with -- well, we still have a splinter group -- but it is past tense for me --- anyway, a group at Google that dealt with security and the truth is even inside the COMPANY there are those that sort of advocate a little more of a human TOUCH to messages.

The problem is the upper-ranking boss types don't like to start down the road of being sort of more human and less machine-like because they fear where that can lead. And there is some validity to that line of thought and subsequent management.

It's kind of like when the Gmail was first started and all the neat messages were sent out to new folks and then that just stopped, of course. Too many customers. It happens over and over in this business. Many customers and the language gets curt and easier to duplicate for mutli-situations and so less work needed at the UI side of the job.

This is an awfully weird business.

Heh, BC_Programmer, you remember what C++ was first called?Uh oh! I think I messed up, didn't I? You aren't complaining about the text of the message, but the message itself, right? More than one trigger, too.

Well, maybe I can leave the one above still in the thread? Sorry for the error.

But thinking about the idea of "extreme security" I am sort of lost as I am not so sure I have had a concern about too much, IF I knew something was really wrong.

Now if you are getting bogus security notices, that is a whole different ball game, I think.

Maybe a little more information would be useful.

Why did you conclude that what tripped the Microsoft security software was bogus?

Let's start with Microsoft and then shift to Google.

Again, sorry I didn't properly download your post into my brain, Geek-9pm. I really thought you were complaining about the language used.

By the way, I think I would lean toward wanting too much security software rather than too little.

Well, I'm not rich, so that might be why. If I had money to burn I would be less worried about Mr./Ms. Bad Guy/Gal trying to online thieving my money. I might even look upon it as a weird entertainment. In part what I had posted was that I found it ironic that somebody who had clearly been a victim of poor security practices would lament their existence.

Specifically:
Quote

Just now I got the same hassle with a Google account. After a big fuss, it asked me to change my password without any evidence that the password was compromised.

From here:

Quote
If there’s suspicious activity in your Google Account or we detect that your password has been stolen, we may ask you to change your password. By changing your password, you help make sure that only you can use your account.

As per the thread I referenced. I don't think he ever took the gravity of the compromise of his system seriously. The system was infected with 25 or more pieces of malware which would have most certainly provided access to his account passwords. Running MALWAREBYTES and assuming the problem was fixed has clearly not worked- Google is asking him to change his password because it has detected malicious activity already, unusual sign-in behaviour (eg. wildly different locations) or detected the password was otherwise compromised.

Assuming, of course, this happens during sign-in. Google won't send E-mails telling people to change their password- That is phishing and is probably somebody trying to get your current password.

Complaining about more or less the "inconvenience of it all" as he is doing here seems to underline to me that he simply isn't taking the problem seriously.

Geek-9pm, My recommendation would be to immediately change all your passwords. I bold immediately because I do not mean to merely add it to your to-do list. It should be a top priority. Change all said passwords and make them unique from each other, too. (If necessary you can always resort to writing the passwords down, that is still better than sharing passwords between services)

Malware compromise means you cannot trust any passwords you changed while the system was infected. Personally I wouldn't trust the computer at all without a clean install, but that is just me. In addition to that sort of compromise, forums and various services often get compromised on their own Sometimes it is announced, sometimes it isn't, but. If you use the same password on various sites and one of them gets compromised then it becomes that much easier to access your accounts elsewhere using the same password.

Furthermore, that information is now often used for attempted extortion. A few weeks ago I got a "scary" E-mail from somebody claiming to be a "hacker" who claimed to know my password and have access to my computer and all my contacts. The password they mentioned was something I used decades ago- I changed it everywhere that mattered entirely because it became part of released "black market" compromised data.

One can see how people who don't take security seriously and who complain about the inconvenience of Google asking them to change their password when their account has been compromised could easily fall victim to those E-mails because the Password being accurate due to never being changed offers legitimacy to the rest of their claims. (Which are the standard nonsense, transfer BTC etc etc blah blah the consequences will be dire etc.)

C with classes, if I've understood the question. Bit of a non-sequiter, though!

Very true about that question being off-topic and I am not even sure how or why that thought jumped into my brain. I suspect a faulty brain due to age.

I do hope that Geek-9pm and his wife do the NECESSARIES to be sure their systems are secure. The security systems are all there and should be used to good advantage. To my best we have in place secure measures.
First thing we limit access to our property. We ignore e-mails fro people we do not know.

Right now I do have an issues i can not resolve. My modem will not let me log in. And nobody can help me.TYje solution is to get a new modem. Never has the happened before.
It is an ARRIs cable model.

192.168.0.1 is the IP for log in.

It enters a security dialog and will not let me in.
This started last week.I have to do this off the top of my head because other activities are in dire need of continued attention, but that address is a gateway address correct? Now what jumps out at me is your making a previous note about your wife's computer and if you are both using the same modem I smell a problem could arise. I mean, there are ways to do that, but one has to be sort of careful. Well, more than "sort of" but I suspect you can get better help from BC_Programmer, which certainly has to be true because I really have to scoot. My co-admin on one of my sites hasn't seen my log in for many hours and can very likely see I have been busy elsewhere and will be angry at me. Well, upset more than angry.

Hold up on buying another modem, Geek-9pm. Please. it might not be necessary.Quote

Do you mean the login you have pictured? That's normal. Most ISPs will put the default credentials on the router. It looks like you've accessed it before. Did you change the password when you did so?

If the password is the default, then it is "password" (no quotes). Otherwise, you can factory reset the modem via a pinhole in the back. That will reset everything back to the default and once it boots back up the password will be "password" to get into the router settings. As there was some mention of Gmail in the OP I am going to go ahead and use this thread to ask about something related to Gmail and maybe there will be thoughts some of you might have.

I recall a bit back we were being told by the various Gmail Team folks that the security question thingy was no longer being used as a Gmail type security tool, but recently I have had to access my Gmail accounts from hospitals and other not-normal-workstation locations and one thing that always popped up was either finish the partial showing of your support email account or answer a security question.

I actually tried to remember an answer to one such request to answer the security question and got it wrong and was then able to simply finish the ID of the security email account, or whatever that email account is called.

So what's the deal about that security question? Has anyone in this community recently opened a new Gmail account and been asked to submit a security question? I honestly thought those were no longer being used at Google.

Solve : Internet Timeout whilst gaming ONLY?

Answer»

Greetings all,

So this issue has been going since late 2018, which is when I have changed my router with ANOTHER (both were from the ISP). Anyhow, whenever I start gaming, I timeout/lose connection to that game's server, however, when I ALT+TAB out of the game, I can see that my ethernet icon is still UP, and when I head over to my browser and navigate to Google or any other website, the internet is fine and functional. This happens on both Wired and Wi-Fi connections. Also, I am the only person that loses connection in that server, the others face no issues.

I have tried the following so FAR with no luck:-
- Factory reset router
- Install a brand new OS
- Swap ALL of the COMPUTER's hardware (Including NIC)
- Install and set up a separate NIC (Not the one in the motherboard)
- Modify and tweak internet settings (using TCPOptimizer program)
- Swap Ethernet connection with Wi-Fi

My computer's specifications are as follows:
- 32GB 3600MHz Ram
- RTX 2070 Super
- i9-10900K
- ASUS MAXIMUS XII FORMULA
- Windows 10 Pro (VERSION 2004 OS Build 19041.685)
- Ethernet ConnectionWhat game, as this issue could be a bug with that game and your hardware combination?

Others are using the same internet connection in your home and same game WITHOUT issues or are they elsewhere using a different internet connection to the same game?

Solve : ethernet cable damage?

Answer»

I have/had a wired network but builders damaged it. Replacing the cable is the preferred answer but not possible.

I have tried a cable tester and it shows 2 and 6 are OPEN circuits and the other six are showing good.

Since the ethernet signals only use 1,2,3,and 6, it seemed a good idea to switch 2 and 6 to 7and 8 on input and back again. I creaed two patch CABLES to achieve this. However it did not work.

Any ideas WOULD be appreciated.

Well, you could try with powerline adapters? If that's an option? It is a thought, I have a Power Line link set up to provide network access to a pair of TiVo boxes. Only needs occaisional use so good enough.

The wired network is for streamimg tv. I tried the PWL but the buffering was quite bad and not at all acceptable. well, it all depends on the MODEL you are using...in my experience the 600+ model should do the job. Another problem is location of the powerline adaptors, if they are not on the same phase, if they are not PLUGGED in the wall directly etc. Sometimes one need a little bit of testing location for a pair to work as they should. Just saying...

Solve : Bad Connection to Only One Server?

Answer»

I have asked this question on multiple subreddits and online tech forums and no one has been able to give me any information as to why or how my issue is occurring, so I'm trying here now.

So my friend has a Minecraft server hosted by a company called OVH. It's a very reliable server for everyone that plays on it, except for me and my girlfriend that lives in the same house, on the same router. For everyone else that plays the server, the TPS is a constant 20, which is Minecraft standard, and their connection to the server is fine, however, I have a completely different story. For some odd reason, whenever I join, my connection immediately skyrockets, giving me a PING of UPWARDS of 10,000ms, ultimately timing me out. What's strange is the fact that this only happens to me, and only on this server. I can easily join and play any other GAME server on any game, Minecraft and more, with no issue whatsoever. I have pretty average internet, 100Mbps Up, 100Mbps down, based out of Atlanta, Georgia. I've tried everything that I would know how to try (resetting router to factory settings, requesting a new IP, renewing my computers internal IP, changing my windows networking registry settings, using a vpn, wiping windows and trying again) and nothing has worked out in my favor. I would like to note that I took the time to go to my brothers house and try on his computer and it worked just fine, we have the same internet service provider (Windstream), and we only LIVE a half a mile ( .8km) from one another. I am legitimately stumped as to what my PROBLEM is, or how to fix it. Any insight as to what is occurring would really mean a lot to me, thanks!Ask your brother to bring his computer to your place and try it again.
That will give you somewhere to start with.

Nobody wants to guess when it comes to networking issues.. not enough time in the day to list all the possible combinations of problems.
(It would be like placing a small screw in your hand, and asking you where it came from, in a hardware store you've never been to.)

Solve : No Internet / Ethernet Win 8.1. Other PCs on router ok. PLEASE FAST!?

Answer»

win 8.1 64
Z97 HD3 motherboard
i7-4790K
16bg ram
SSD
gold certified PSU

All of a sudden I have no internet. Yellow triangle icon over internet icon in taskbar. Usually just unplugging and re plugging the router from the wall fixes this but not this time. It's been out for over a day now. I need to log into bank to pay bill and mail THINGS on ebay from 2 days ago.

I am writing this from the worlds actual biggest POS computer that barely works, is as slow as possible and has many bugs and security issues and firewall doesn't even work. This PC is sort of a back up and never on and I will not log into bank or anything with it, it needs to be replaced but that's a different story. I cant' even open other PC help forum sites, getting CLOCK ERROR which should be correct, and clicking fix does NOTHING. I click to 'join' CNET help forum it does nothing. Getting Site Can't Provide a Secure Connection on other site. Trying to use my phone to solve this instead.

I don't have wi fi capabilities on the i7-490k PC but someone gave me a USB wifi thing to check if the actual port for the ethernet cable on my motherboard is broke. I connected it USB and progress bar showed it was done but I couldn't find it or anything and prefer not to mess with wi fi anyway. I doubt the motherboard port is physically broken/fried anyway. When unplugged, I get a red X in toolbar over internet icon, when plugged in, it light up and blinks motherboard and goes to a yellow 'limited' connection which still doesn't GIVE internet.

I tried a brand new internet cable.

I tried disabling and enabling network adapter .

I tried a system restore point, that seemed to make it worse, if I clicked the Chrome icon it won't even open but Internet Explorer icon does open (but no internet).

i tried uninstalling the driver and it's supposed to reinstall when restarting PC.

I tried diagnose connection problem (as if diagnose ever works) = "IP configuration has STOPPED working."

RUN: ipconfig /flushdns gave an error, so did netsh winsock reset

I run clean scans of spybot and defender at least daily and hasn't found anything in years

Solve : Provider?

Answer»

Hello,

I would like to know how to get internet without having an ISP, in other terms how to get connected to the internet directly. Because I would like to share with connection with other housed but most ISP don't ALLOW to share internet connection or even create commercial hotspots.

Thank You

AlmnAsk your neighbour real nicely if he'll share his wireless connection with you. ISP can't see that unless you let them look at it.no I mean with a wire

and the point anyways is how do I start my own ISP.

Thanks

How do you expect to start an ISP when you don't own or rent any lines? C'mon, do some research before asking questions. All I would like to know( thats why I posted this THREAD) is how to get connected directly to the internet without get by a first ISP ?

The rest I will also do research on. Like I said; ask your neighbour nicely if you can piggyback on his connection.

You would need to buy a leased line from your telecoms provider and nail down some fixed IP address ranges. Not cheap.Thank You very much, at least thats usefull information.
Do you know by chance if verizon sells leased lines ??

Thanks

Al968I THINK you'd need to CONTACT Verizon for that..so I'm guessing you don't know

Al968You ask a lot of silly questions though. Solve : Practical limit to the size of a hosts file??

Answer»

I've recently pumped up my hosts file with several different collections of loopback redirects of less-than-desireable sites. My hosts file is now hovering around 2MB and may grow a little bit more. I've searched around, but can't seem to find much readily available information about a practical limit to a hosts file's size. Heres the only significant link I came accross: http://www.techsupportalert.com/issues/issue97.htm (Just search for the word "Personally" on the page and you'll come to the paragraph REFERENCE hosts file size). As you'll see, no hard facts are presented for the writer's views on the hosts file.

I'm wondering if having so many entires would bog down the name resolution process. I've been having some problems lately with INTERNET connectivity, but alot of it seems to be related to my router so its difficult to pinpoint if my hosts file could be adding to the problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
--OoberQuote

I'm wondering if having so many entires would bog down the name resolution process.
Without a doubt. An intelligent hardware firewall will provide a much more efficient solution. Possibly your router is up to this job.Are there routers that can do that?

I think it's cheaper and easier to just have your host file grow out of proportions, mine is 494 KB and I never noticed any slowdowns.Quote

I doubt it. It's a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router which has enough features to be fun to play with, but isn't as much fun as something rack mounted. What always made me curious about the hosts file is: why is the IP address first? I would think that the hostname would be first followed by an IP address to map it to. In my mind, that would make it easier for the computer to parse through the text file. Right now there are thousands of "127.0.0.1" entries it has to look through before coming to the hostname.

Raptor, my hosts file is a little over 2,000 KBytes. I've attached it to this post. Its actually in two parts to CIRCUMVENT the 250k attachment limitation. Control-c and control-v work nicely. You can try it for yourself and see if it causes problems.

Here is an intersting page about large hosts files, the problem that they can allegedly cause, and a purported fix: http://www.ericphelps.com/scripting/samples/Hosts/ In the article, it is suggested that you disable the DNS client service. Sounds interesting. I'll give it a try when I have a spare minute or three. In the meantime, does anyone else have any leads on hosts file size?

Thanks,.

I just Googled around to find some good anti-malware hosts files and found about three. Copy and Paste is a wonderful invention. Here's a link to one of the largest such hosts files: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt It seems to stay very well updated. In fact, its probably the only one I really need, but I thought I'd be *really* thorough and add a few together. I still haven't had a chance at trying the aforementioned disabling of the DNS client service to see if it clears my problems up. BTW, the problem I was having was that I would type a hostname into my browser (apple.com, download.com, whatever) and it would just hang there. However, I've been having simultaneous router problems, so I can't be sure what the source of the problem is.

As far as that Firefox hack you were wishing for, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard with a little programming knowledge. Mention it on the Mozilla forums and you may get a response. Or you could always start hacking away at the firefox source code on your own (http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Download_Mozilla_Source_Code).

I'm not too keen on programming, but I might pick it up one day and see if I can get anything done. I once suggested it to a programmer and he said you might need to build drivers of some kind because you're influencing something outside of Firefox.

Funny enough is that I'm also having a bit of trouble with my Router and it happens to be a WRT54G Wireless-G Router as well.

I sometimes lose connection for a second or so and then it reconnects; oddly enough my Qtec router never had a problem with that.

Although it may have just been the cabling that got jerked loose when I placed my new router; I yet have to see the error/disconnect message after reconnecting the cables.

What problems are you having with that Router?
I use that one as well. I keep being surprised at how many ads people make comments on on forums and I'm thinking Advertisements? I don't see any!

Yeah, adblock plus and filterset G also keep me ad-free.

It'll just spontaneously stop accepting any traffic whatsoever. ipconfig /all shows everything in order, but no traffic is moved. Not even ICMP. Sometimes ipconfig /renew solves the problem, other times you've got to "bounce" it (unplug the power jack, wait 10 or 15 seconds, and then plug it back in). Weird.

--O.N.You might get an answer on MSDN about the theoretical limit of hsots files.

Note that many routers are now based on Linux, providing an extremely efficient and highly CONFIGURABLE router/firewall/packet analyser combo. You could drop one of your hosts files into such a router, and I expect you'd get much better results. Or you could set up all kinds of wildcard/IP address range filtering.

Bottom line, right tool for job. If you need something that AdblockPlus and a decent software firewall can't cope with, then get a decent hardware firewall.

IMHO.

Solve : USB Drive Won't Stay Mounted?

Answer»

I have a 500GB USB drive plugged into a Netgear C7000 Router.

When I LOG into the router via a BROWSER (i.e., 192.168.0.1), I can see the drive, its ADDRESS, and its folders.

When I go to "Networks" in Windows EXPLORER, I can see the name of the drive.

When I double-click on the drive in Networks, I get a "Cannot connect to "drive message.

If I edit the name(s) in the browser window, and go back into Explorer, its Fonzie.

But when I reboot, the issue returns.

I had this very same drive and this very same router plugged into a different network a few months ago, and it was ALWAYS Fonzie. I have changed the name of the drive (from "RJB-MediaDrive" to "DB-Media") but other than that.

Weird, right?

Solve : Frame Burst?

Answer» Frame burst

Allows packet bursting which will increase overall network speed.

If that is so, why is it disabled by default?

Linksys Wireless router / Wireless settingsMaybe Linksys has some info on it on their website, which I have no reason to visit since my router is a D-Link.

What specific router are you referring to? Suppose I'll go harass Linksys technical support about it.Packet bursting would theoretically result in more collisions (and HENCE slower perceived network speeds) on a congested network. What does it do?A Google search on packet bursting yields some sources indicating packet bursting improves speeds. Here's one: Packet bursting helps Ethernet scale to gigabit-per-second speeds. It reduces the delay between packet transmission. Hence more packets on the net. Hence more packet collisions on a BUSY net. Not a good idea to USE this is you have more than, say, five machines actively using the same segment of the net. Might work with a switched network though...Thanks. So it's worth turning it on when you only have a Laptop and a router COMMUNICATING wirelessly or is it something you'll never notice?I IMAGINE if you were streaming video over wireless, you might notice the difference. I haven't ever attempted to test it.

Solve : Network devices?

Answer»

ok, so. *breaths deeply*

I bought a d-link router for a home NETWORK, set it all up, no go. I had no internet connections on either computer HOOKED up to the router.

called d-link tech. support. after hours of unecessary b.s. they told me to call my ISP, grande communications. Grande refered me back to d-link, whom refered me back to grande; who, you guessed it, refered me back to d-link.

I returned the router, and am now the owner of a linksys router, and have internet on what I will call, the mother computer. However, my secondary comptuer, was still internetless, so to the phone I went, and I called grande. Grande did a bunch of stuff, and finally told me to...

go to start, control panel, system, harware tab, device manager, network devices......but hold the phone. I don't have one of these "network adapter thinggies to click on". However, my ethernet cable it snuggly secured into the back of my computer, and when I put in the happy go lucky drivers and utilities discs for my Dell Opti Plex ((resourceCD for reinstalling Device Drivers and using diagnostics, utilities and system requirements....)) go to the network whatever, and extract...it brings up a page that tells me to...

go to start, control panel, system, harware tab, device manager, network devices...

I still dont have this netwrok devices link.

I'm a little stressed with the whole situation.

I'm contemplating killing something. It may not be enabled in the BIOS, so that's why you don't see it in DM.

Reboot, look for something (LIKE F2 or F10 or some fool thing) to access the BIOS. Once there use your ARROW keys to move thru the menu and look for integrated devices or something (I'm REALLY tired now so I might not be too coherent ). Look for ethernet adapter or something and make sure it's enabled.

Good luck. I'm going to bed now

Alan <>< How did you configure the router? If you can access the Internet on one computer, you should be able to access it on another computer UNLESS:

 • You have no Network card or it has no drivers installed
 • You set the Router to DHCP but the computer is not set to automatically obtain an IP adress
 • You disabled DHCP but set the router to automatically assign an IP adress

There's probably a few more scenarios, but these are most likely to happen in your home network environment.

What kind of connection do you have?

Would you be able to post a photo of the back of your computer? Or maybe give us the Optiplex model number?Hi there

I don't suppose you are getting confused between a USB cable and an Ethernet, (RJ45) cable?

do a google picture search on google for each type of cable if you are unsure.

Solve : Registrar blocked my domain?

Answer»

What to do? I received a complaint about a DOMAIN that I have been using for 5 years. And the registrar immediately blocked my domain. I can’t REACH support for the whole day. UNFORTUNATELY the only one who can do ANYTHING about the domain would be your registrar. So, you'll need to wait until you hear from them. Alternatively, if you can manage the domain through the registrar and it allows you to transfer to another registrar you can transfer the domain. However, I'd ASSUME if it's blocked you probably also cannot change any of the domain settings.

Solve : Allowing Access to IoT Device from Guest Network?

Answer»

I've created a GUEST Network in my house for... well, if I ever have guests again.

Actually I've had it for years, and other than the fact they can't use my printer, they've never complained. (*censored*, I'm usually so happy they're leaving I'm glad to print their boarding passes for them).

I recently installed a Yamaha amplifier on my stereo that has Sirius and other online radio options.

Is it possible to allow that ONE device to be seen on both my home networks and my guest networks? And if "yes" would that be a device setting or something I could set via a Windows machine on either network?

I'm fine leaving an IPAD handy as a "remote", but that seems excessive.

Thanks, I'll take your answer off the air.If the Yamaha Amplifier has Bluetooth, I'd just have that out there for devices to connect to for it. Other option is when using your Yamaha Amplifier have it on the Guest network and have 2 network adapters in your computer that has access to both networks but cant be used as a bridge between the 2 networks. Have the 2nd NIC setup with IP Address and Subnet but no gateway and have the gateway IP on the 1st network adapter so web surfing and all that goes over private network. Thanks, Dave. It DOES have BT, but it's as a sound input only, not as a way to control the unit.

Your bit about the 2 NIC-bridge is just a fancy way of saying, "No", isn't it? It sounds like you're describing how one PC can see things on both networks? My goal was to be able to have the device - the amplifier - accessible by everyone on the Home network (which it is) and everyone on the Guest network (which it isn't). The Guest network does have Internet privileges, but not access to the router settings or printers.

Thanks for the reply!Quote

Your bit about the 2 NIC-bridge is just a fancy way of saying, "No", isn't it?

Well ... if you had one computer that needed access to it and the Amplifier was sitting on the Guest network side it would work for that computer and any other computers with dual NICs connected that way, and anyone connecting to it on Guest network would have access to it. But being on the main network scope and tunneling to that amplifier on the guest network, unless some sort of port forwarding tricks are around to tunnel to it from outside the guest network, it wont be accessible.

If the Guest Network Router has DMZ support you could place the Amplifier with a Static IP Address on the DMZ, where the DMZ is your Main Network( This is not setting the Amplifier up on the DMZ of your Main Router or that OPENS up security VULNERABILITIES as well as gives access to amplifier to all who find it on the web.) However to access the Amplifier on the DMZ of the Guest Router you would likely have to change the gateway IP address of the Main Network or those devices that will access the amplifier to the IP Address that the Main Router has given to the Guest Network Router so if the Guest Network Router is given a static IP of 192.168.1.2 and the main network router is on 192.168.1.1 and the Amplifier is on the Guest network at 192.168.2.15 then from the 192.168.1.x network devices there would have access to it at 192.168.2.15 as the request to the gateway would be a request to the Guest Network router which will direct the traffic flow to the Amplifier on the DMZ.

I haven't tried what I stated above before but in theory I believe it would work, however those devices with the gateway pointing to resolve through the Guest Router ( I feel wont have internet access until their Gateway IP addresses are set BACK to what they were on the main routers network.)

So to make the connectivity work between Main and Guest networks for the Amplifier, its my assumption that you would lose your outbound to the internet for devices connected this way until their gateway IP's are changed back to the outbound to go to the WWW vs further up stream within the home networks.

If this all seems like a lot of work to try then... No would be the answer I guess. I've never set up a device this way to make that work, and in theory it should work through DMZ but no guarantee. But it is secure if only Guest Network DMZ setup as the DMZ is local to main network.Thanks.

I'm always game to try a theory - provided I have a good backout/contingency plan.

Essentially, I'd be doing this so people visiting my house can change the radio station with their phone when I'm not around. So that's such a small real issue - if there was a tick box somewhere to allow it, cool. But...!

Solve : Securing wireless network?

Answer»

What would be the best way to secure my Wireless networking using a Linksys WRT54G
Wireless-G Broadband Router and a WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook Adapter with Windows XP?

What protocol? What shared key phrase? What is a shared key phrase? Any tutorials? The best way would to be using a WPA encryption with a VERY strong password. Try https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm for a really good password. The ones given there are strong enough to take a lifetime to crack.I did that and I copied the entire 63 characters into the WPA2 AES+TKIS (Or something like that) shared key phrase and then Windows gives me some ERROR about.. (See screenshot)

Not filling out the password properly even though I just copied the entire key phrase I used with WPA2 into the password bar that is required to be filled out when connecting to a wireless WPA2 network.

Does this make sense?Hi
there are a few things you can try
Firstly can you connect using WEP and a poor key, say something like 12345678.
This gives weakest security, near enough as bad as not having any but it will test you connection is OK.

If it does connect using WEP then USE WPA-PSK
Ensure you have matching ssid's in both the router and your NIC
Make sure you don't have any other security or antivirus running while you are testing this.
You can turn it all back on afterwards.
When I say security I mean turn off firewall in XP, (either XP firewall, keiro, zone alarm or whatever you use) and router firewall
No IP filtering
No MAC adddress filtering
Infact no filtering at all, get the idea.

(once it's up and running this can be turned on one at a time).

As for securing it further, just get it working to WEP, then WPA and we'll take it from there.

steveAnd what Steve was JUST about to say is that before you turn off all of this protection, you will of course unplug your internet connection.WEP and poor keys do work, but I do not understand what kind of format I have to use for the shared key phrase when I choose WPA2.I'm under the impression the shared key phrase can be any string of characters you create, from 8 - 63 characters. Have you tried something other than that 63-character string you copied from somewhere?

You might download this User Guide and do some searching in it: User Guide. I know page 50 mentions the "shared key".Look in network properties and select the wireless card. Not the tcp/ip but the basic card listing. In its properties, under the advanced tab, there should be an entry for encryption. Select it and it should give you a box to choose the type of encryption to use. Choose the one you want, but make sure the card and router are using the same type. After a reboot, look in the cards configuration utility (in the system tray) and make sure that everything there is properly CONFIGURED, including the encryption key.Quote

That seemed to have somewhat done the trick, although I still can't connect.

What protocol do you suggest I use, WPA2 and AES?

What is "Key group renewal" and what should it be set to?Quote
What protocol do you suggest I use, WPA2 and AES?

What is "Key group renewal" and what should it be set to?

WPA provides better security.

Key Group Renewal is the AMOUNT of time the router waits to renew the keys. It can be set to default (7200) but 3600 is recommended.

Register MAC addresses of Network PC’s on Router

1. Obtain the MAC addresses of each PC that will be on your network. This can be done by doing the following on each of the PC’s that will be on your network:
* Click Start and choose Run
* Type cmd and click OK
* Type ipconfig /all
* Locate “Physical Address” (It should look something like 00-01-CA-XX-21-10)
* This is the MAC address. Repeat this on each computer that is CONNECTED to your network and take note of these numbers.
2. Back in the LinkSys configuration screen, choose the “Advanced” tab from the top.
3. Verify “Filters” is the secondary tab currently selected.
4. Select Enabled in “Filtered MAC Address”
5. Select “Permit PC’s listed below to access the wireless network”.
6. Enter the MAC addresses of each of the PC’s that will be part of your wireless network.
7. Choose Save Settings.

In the computers network settings there should be a tab to display wireless networks. If there is more than one SSID listed, make sure yours is at the top of the list.
Somehow I can't get it done, I did it exactly as you said multiple times but I end up not being able to connect to the network. At one point I was able to connect (Without any type of security added) but I could only send packets and not receive them for some bizzare reason.

Guess I just need to experiment a bit more till I finally get it right, thanks for the information.

i sure would appreciate any help i can get.
thanks
harleyAre you on a wireless network?

When you say Quote

I assume this problem deals with Internet Explorer

Try scanning for Viruses and Spyware. Set your Security zones and Advanced Internet Explorer settings back to default.Raptor
thanks for your reply . no i am not on a network i used to be and it is inactive now.
the help center is a deal from bellsouth to help you with problems , checks connections and modem and stuff.Does Bellsouth have technical support you can call? Might be a glitch in their software.

Alan <>< Have you gone over the product settings to make sure itsn't timing out on purpose?

Calling Bellsouth may be a good idea as well, SEE if there are any product updates.Raptor and Ale5
thanks for you reply , i sure do apreciate it. i am a little hard of hearing(because of a few strokes) , but i have called bellsouth a couple of times and both times the tech was in india and could not half hear or understand what he was saying and both times he sent the phone man out with a new modem/router.
how do i find out if it is timing out?
is it possible that my screen saver could cause the problem?
thanks again

i am a little hard of hearing... the tech was in india and could not half hear or understand what he was saying
Trust me, that's nothing to do with your hearing impairment. Blinkin' Indian call centres.

Your dropping internet connection could be due to a few problems:
 • faulty DSL filters on phone lines
 • Using certain equipment (such as faxes) on the same line, particularly without filters
 • flaky modem
 • poor signal to noise ratio on the phone line - you could ask your TELECOMS company to boost the line gain. This could help with your hearing impairment too.
 • intermittent line fault - get your phone company to test the line
 • poor atmospheric conditions (e.g. electromagnetic interference
 • or the ISP may have a secret policy to drop internet connections occasionally - it happens
Ditto Rob

I deal with India/Pakistan/any 3rd world support and it doesn't make a difference if you have good/bad/NO hearing problems....they STILL don't understand :-/

Solve : Laptop takes Not less than 10 minutes to connect to wifi Router?

few days ago i bought a router called "Telenet MF286U" from local seller.

i did not change any setting of router except "LTE Band".i select only Band 3 because it gives more speed than default band settings.

while my Toshiba Satellite Pro L850 LAPTOP(windows 7) trying to connect with router via wifi ,it failed to make a connection..

ON & OFF laptop wifi did not worked for me..

restarting router did not work everytime, but sometimes it works.

sometimes my phone has same issue,it also failed to connect.but it did not take time as Laptop does.(Laptop takes 10min or more)

Laptop takes not less than 10 minutes.how unusual is this?

-after this issue i update wifi drivers using DRIVER Booster 9.

-But it did not solve problem.

Is this Router's issue or Laptop wireless card's issue?

Quote

Is this Router's issue or Laptop wireless card's issue?

To see if its a issue with Laptop's wifi I'd go to another wifi connection and see how quickly it is able to connect to that. If the laptop connects quickly then I'd think its an issue with the router itself in it not correctly handshaking to the laptop.

Pushing the driver update via Driver Booster 9, I would have AVOIDED as those driver tools usually do more harm than good. Its always best to INSTALL a driver clean downloaded from the maker of the wireless adapter/chipset as the Driver Booster like tools usually come bundled with stuff you dont want added to system.

unfortunately i could not find another router/wifi network to test it .

but i experienced some strange things.

Laptop take much time to connect when it start for 1st time in a day..after 1st successfully connection,it did not take more than 2-3 minutes reconnect if connect manually (WITHOUT restarting laptop)

when laptop is trying connect to wifi network for 1st time in it's start,if i switch on phone's wifi ,then laptop takes only 2-3 minutes to connect.which mean phone connect to wifi network withing 1-2mintues ,it caused to reduce connecting time of laptop.. i tried this way few time ,it worked.it is not random thing as i think.

Solve : Losing Internet and/or Network Connectivity?

Answer»

I have a TP-Link Deco mesh network with 5 Decos as follows:

Location Model IP Address Build Release

Main (Living Room) X60 (2.0) 192.168.68.1 20210204 50164

Apartment X60 (1.0) 192.168.68.51 20210121 54042

Bedroom X20 (1.0) 192.168.68.54 20210121 54794

Master Bedroom X60 (2.0) 192.168.68.56 20210204 50164

Office X20 (1.0) 192.168.68.55 20210121 54794

The Main Deco is connected to a Motorola Docsis 3.1 modem with a CAT-8
cable 36” long, using XFINITY 900 mbs internet service.

The Master Bedroom Deco never seems to have any problems, and it is
the one physically placed farthest away from the Main Deco.

The Apartment Deco never seems to have any problems, but the Smart TV
(connected to the Deco with a CAT-8 cable) is rarely used, so it is
hard to tell. It is at IP 192.168.68.71.

My Smart Phone works on the Deco WiFi at 192.168.68.50 with no problems.

The Bedroom Deco frequently loses connection, goes flashing red, and
usually will reconnect itself and go green again. Sometimes I have to
unplug it and plug it in again. When I do this, I have to redo the
network connection on the Smart TV and Blu-ray player plugged into it
(they are connected via Ethernet to this Deco) by using the device
settings menus. When the TV is redone, it is with 192.168.68.61. The
Blu-ray is redone as 192.168.68.67. Sometimes I am unaware that this
Deco has gone out and reconnected itself, and I have to redo the
network connections on the devices. This is an ongoing problem.

The Office Deco had the same problem. I usually had to do a hard reset
and find this Deco and add it back to the network, which usually took
multiple tries because it could not be found. I often had to
physically carry it to the Main location to do this. I swapped this
Deco with the Apartment Deco, and placed it in a slightly different
location about 3 ft. away from its former location (either location is
the closest to the Main Deco, about 10 ft. and one floor down), and
this problem no longer occurs.

Now my problems with this Deco are much more severe.

There are two computers, a multifunction printer, and three NAS
devices connected via CAT-6 cables to a gigabit switch which is
connected via CAT-8 cable to the Deco. The three NAS devices never
seem to have any problems. They are at 192.168.68.68, 192.168.68.62,
and 192.168.68.4.

Both the printer and scanner of the multifunction printer sometimes
work, sometimes do not. When it works, it is at 192.168.68.66. Right
now it is only working on a USB connection to one computer. It is
currently at 169.254.70.166. This would appear to be the problem. The
only fix I have is to reinstall the printer on two computers, which I
have had to do multiple times.

The two computers, which I will call Envy and Silver (both HP laptops
running Windows 11 home 64 bit with all UPGRADES installed), have
similar problems. Every time the Office Deco went out, I lost internet
connectivity on both. I tried restarting Windows multiple times,
resetting the network on both, resetting the adapters on both, running
all available troubleshooters, rolling back to restore points, doing
another hard reset on the Deco, manually assigning an IPv4 address to
the Ethernet adapters, to no avail. I even did an in-place upgrade
from the latest Windows ISO on both. Sometimes they would connect to
the internet, sometimes not (they would still work on the network,
just no internet, connecting to each other, the printer when it was
working, the NAS devices). Finally, I used the Deco app on my phone
and rebooted the network. This seemed to get everything working again.

Two hours later, for no apparent reason that I could determine, they
both lost connectivity. I tried connecting a spare laptop that I had
available to the network. It was assigned 169.254.8.44 as an IP
address, and would not connect to anything.

After fiddling for the better part of a day, Envy has been working now
at 192.168.68.65. How long this will last I don’t know. Every time I
succeeded in getting it working again, it didn't last. What is the
most perplexing of all is being away from the computer for a while,
just leaving it running, to come back only to find that it had lost
its internet connection.

I have not been able to get Silver connected again. IPconfig says it
is at 169.254.70.166. I cannot get it to connect to anything.

It seems apparent that the problem lies with Deco, and not any of the
other hardware or with Windows. Why is Deco assigning 169.254 IP
addresses? (I am allowing everything to be assigned via DHCP.)

I am at my wit’s end, and am so frustrated I want to scream.

To add- the Office Deco no longer loses connectivity by flashing red.
It stays solid green even when I cannot connect. The inability to
connect appears to completely related to the IP address assignments,
although I am willing to concede I may be wrong.

Several things have occurred in the past couple of hours. First, I
shut off my printer for an hour or so. When I turned it back on, it
had the PROPER IP address and both printer and scanner are working
again. I the tried a complete power off on the silver computer with
the incorrect IP address, but when powered back up the IP address was
still incorrect and the computer still will not connect to the
network. Then, for the first time in 2 days, the office Deco lost
connection and went flashing red. I waited a full five minutes, then
reset by PULLING the plug and waiting for it to go green. My working
computer and printer were still good, the bad computer was still bad.
All my WiFi tests tell me my signal strength is very strong, and it is
inconceivable that this could be the problem. The Apartment Deco and
the Office Deco are both in the same room, about 12 feet apart. While
the Office Deco was down, I tried to connect the Envy working computer
via WiFi. It found the Deco network, connected to it, but I still had
no internet access. Once the Office Deco went green, the Ethernet
connection restored.

When I look in my Deco app, it tells me that the Envy computer and the
three NAS devices are connected to the Apartment Deco, when in reality
they are Ethernet connected to the Office Deco. lt tells my my phone,
which sits in a cradle about 12" from the computers, is connected to
the Office Deco, and it won't tell me which Deco the printer is
connected to (probably because it isn't actually printing anything at
the moment). The Deco App speed test tells me my DL speed is 185.8
Mbps, my upload speed is 23.2 Mbps. The WiFi interference test tells
me my signal strength is good at 37 dBm, and interference is low.

Open speed test on the Envy PC says DL speed is 155.8, UL speed is
25.2 with a Baltimore server. Ookla Speedtest, using a different
server (Washington DC Cloudflare) clocks in at 197.91 DL, 32.35 UL.
Network SpeedTest shows 227.7 DL 19.91 UL with an unknown server-
prior tests have shown DL speeds as high as 247.7.Are you new here? Your post has too much information.

Congestion refers to when a network is overloaded with data (like roads with cars or the like). In some cases, street traffic is the result of a temporary situation, like high-volume or accidents, much in the same way as congestion on our networks. Other cases present more dynamic or overarching issues, like poor design or needed repairs—more significant matters that require their type of solutions.

Solve : Robocopy from server to another problems?

Answer»

I am trying to send large files from Windows server 2016 to Windows server 2019 but I am facing some problems using Robocopy :
- I have a long pathname issue (NEAR 600 paths for the first large FILE )
- some of the permissions not copied to the destination server
- I need a way to copy the file while it is in use
- Is there a way to copy the changes only that occurs on server 2016 to server 2019 automatically

THANKS in advance Basic file permissions MIGHT make it over such as read only and others but since it's between systems, ACL (access control lists) which are not part of a file's "permissions" will not.

I see nothing broken about that. File system permissions (ACL) are server/host specific and would have to be worked out per job.

-> IF you must copy such then do so in an OFFLINE mode. Here's how I do that. I boot up another OS and copy the files out since any OS restrictions or apps that have a lock on said file are now inactive.

-> copying an open file is easy. I do this all the time. I boot some Linux from an USB stick and copy the files over. No locks to contend with as the Windows OS is not running.

- > for the long pathname issue , you can just shorten the pathname if you can and if these are low paths , but if its as you post (over 600 PATH ) , you can use any of the third party tools that can handle this issue like the *SPAM* or Gs Richcopy 360 .
and for your info , you can use the second tool to handle all your problems which listed on the post Hi Niki , thanks for your helpful reply, now I have some paths to follow, and I would mention that it is unfortunately I can't do any copy OFFLINE, and shorten the pathnames is not an option for us.

Solve : USB Live Windows 7 no access to the Internet?

Answer»

I made a Windows7 USB Live on one of my flash drives. There's no internet connection at all. I can't see network adapters in the Network & Internet section of Windows Explorer. Seems like no drivers for internet. In general USB ports work. I already check 'em out. I'm saying in general because when I stick to the USB port my external wireless adapter (no internal one in my computer) there is no sign that it works. Anyway, my computer has been connected to the modem/Internet all the time (hard WIRED).
A few days ago I made a Windows10 USB Live on my another flash drive (Windows that I actually have on my hard drive). And there was no problem with access to the Internet.

How could I go around this problem? May someone comment on this issue, please. Okay guys, NEVER mind. I found a CD of my Belkin wireless adapter and had installed drivers from there. So I have an internet now. Though ethernet adapter STAYS still invisible in Windows Explorer. Hmm
But despite the fact that internet is accessible now I couldn't make windows updates. Simply, can't update Windows and that's all. That's WEIRD. Can't even update anything else. Like still there's no access to the Internet IE browser and Mozilla (which I have installed) work though. Is this maybe the reason that I refused windows updates when I was configuring Windows right after its installation? Specifically saying I clicked on the button >Later< then. There was option: install Windows Updates now or later. Hmm I don't think that's the reason.
Anyway, besides this problem all system Win7 Live on my flash drive is slow and programs hang oftentimes, including Windows Explorer. I had no these problems after creation of Win10 USB Live on my another flash drive. And there are no problems so far with that one. Win10 USB Live RUNS smooth and good.
So, I'm going to nuke Win7 USB Live. It makes no sense to keep struggling with that.

BTW: I still will create another Win7 USB Live Just out of my curiosity. I know that some other guys had no such problems after installation Win7 USB Live. You know, this just arouses my curiosity.

Solve : Using Firestick on a projection TV?

I purchased a DVI to HDMI converter and do get access to the Firesticks channels. The problem is, I can't get sound. I thought I might be able to get it through a video recorder I have but no luck. I swapped some red/white/yellow RCA jacks but still no luck. Any ideas from ANYONE?DVI does not support sound so if the projector doesn't have HDMI and the FIRESTICK doesn't support separate audio, only Audio THRU HDMI the 2 units won't work.
If the projector has composite video then this unit may work.

https://www.amazon.com/Dinger-Converter-Compatible-Composite-Adapter/dp/B07FTN5NN7I like the idea, but don't know exactly where to place them. There are multiple RCA JACK ports on my TV.Lisa_maree, I've mulled over the device you suggested and unless it carries video and audio, I'm not sure it would work. It says you can use a firestick but I've got a DVI to HDMI hooked up just to get video from a firestick. As I stated, unless it does what I mentioned above, I don't see how I can use everything together.I guess I waited too long to edit my post. I got to thinking or trying to anyway and realized that all three RCA jacks do carry video and audio. The red and white jacks carry audio and the yellow jack carries video ... I think?

So my ISP said all is well in my area and said it most likely be a computer problem, which I have to agree. There were no warning signs of the missing Network. Tweaking the problem on my desktop I came across the possibility that EITHER Firewall is preventing it, or of all things, "Airplane mode" is on. Notifications comes up showing among its BOXE's, Airplane mode. It says to click on the box should turn it off. I clicked, but get no verification...so I go to system/security and sure enough I see Airplane mode with the button "ON" and stationary...there was no way of sliding it to off. See the contridiction here? One says its off, the other says it on, So I am left with a Notebook that cannot get on the internet. Not even sure that is the reason why. Does anyone here have any ideas what is going on here?I'd try this:

Solve : How to use an ext HDD with this modem: Home Hub 4000 for regular backups??

Answer»

I know I can plug an ext HDD through the USB 3 and USB C ports in the modem, but Windows 10 will only see media files. That would work if I only wanted to make a media library available to everyone at home, but what about using it to dump the backup files from every pc?

Thanks guysYou should be able to plug your ext hdd into a usb port on your ROUTER and share it over the NETWORK in ORDER to be able to use it as a backup LOCATION for any computer attached to the network.

Solve : Would a new router help me??

Answer»

Here is my problem. I like to watch live TV on my iPhone 8 Plus. When I do, the streaming Xfinity video keeps buffering once the video starts streaming. The video plays fine on on my smart TV, laptop, and on my desktop PC. My desktop PC has a direct Ethernet line going to it, so I expect no PROBLEMS from that. The smart TV and laptop are wiFi and those do ok. I get the buffering when I use my smartphone. Here is the router I am currently using.

I am thinking about buying this router. Do you think this will help solve my ISSUE with buffering or not?

Here is ALSO a pic. of my internet test speed. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Unlikely a new modem will make any difference. Have you checked the iphone free memory space if it is a few 100MB you may need to free up some space.Any neighbors on the same wireless band channel as yourself... if so move your wifi to a different channel and this may help if the issue is noise from others on the same wireless band. In the router in the wireless setup there should be an ability to change the band that your using to a different band. I've seen before where wireless on the same channel in close proximity of each other CAUSES a degradation for users wireless networks as devices are competing for the same airwaves to send/receive packets.

Solve : Laptop access Nokia AirScale baseband has ip address range limit?

Answer»

Dear folk
Using a laptop to access Nokia AirScale baseband we normally assign 192.168.255.130/24 and no issue for accessing web interface of the device
When I assigned my laptop IP ADDRESS 192.168.22.10/24 access won’t be GRANTED to access the web interface
Connected is direct from the laptop Ethernet to local MANAGEMENT port (LMP port) of the Airscale ,,,,no gateway ip ddress required and no dhcp involvement

In general how a hardware can control that ?
Thx>>I assigned my laptop ip address 192.168.22.10/24<<

Solve : Only able to visit ipv6 sites - NO ipv4 sites - help please!?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an internet connection issue that has been driving me insane for weeks - HOPING someone can help!

Basically I am only able to view SITES from Google and YouTube - I understand these are ipv6 sites - all other sites (ipv4) are not viewable.

I have searched high and low for answers and have tried the following:

- Changing the DNS settings to:

IPv4 : DNS set to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

IPv6 : DNS set to 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844

- Updated drivers

- factory reset router

- shut off antivirus and firewall. Tried an alternate antivirus.

- did malware/virus scan

- tried a different wireless dongle

- tried the following CMD instructions:

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release *CON*

ipconfig /renew

netsh int ip reset all

netsh winsock reset all

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

netsh int ip reset all

ipconfig /release

net stop "dns client"

net start "dns client"

All my other devices are fine.

The frustrating issue is that sometimes one of the above commands (usually 'flushdns') plus a restart will fix things temporarily. That might be for up to a few hours or just a few minutes or even seconds.

The problem keeps returning. My work is totally RELIANT on a reliable internet connection, so I'm tearing my hair out.

Any suggestions would be very gratefully received.

Thank you.Odd... If your router has the ability to force it to running IPv4 and IPv6 disabled I'd try that as Google and Youtube will work still through IPv4. The factory default for your router may be to have IPv6 enabled.

I had some issues with IPv6 and my Ruko a few years ago and basically shut off IPv6 and forced the router to IPv4 and problem went AWAY.

Solve : I keep losing my connection.?

Answer»

had trouble getting connected because of too many walls, the problem was solved by going the ethernet way, google however keeps putting me back on wi fi, I am trying to make ethernet my priority, I go to settings, network, status, CHANGE adapter options, I right click on Ethernet, properties, and a list appears, Client to M/soft, file printers, Qos packet, Protocol ver 4, microsoft multiplex, LLDP pro driver, internet version 6. All are ticked except MICRO multiplex. NOW WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE? HELPDisable the Wireless Adapter and it will be FORCED to use Ethernet Connection only. Otherwise they may compete and cause a headache as to which is considered the actual gateway out.

If its a laptop and you need to use wireless at places, just turn the wireless adapter back on when not connected to ethernet. Then when you go to CONNECT to ethernet again, shut off the wireless adapter and should be all set. That's fine but where do I find the wireless adapter? which one on my list is safe to uncheck. Thanks for your rapid responce.I think I have solved the problem, I disabled wi fi . if it causes problems I can just turn it back on. thanks for your HELP. much appreciated. Not a problem and yeah there are a few different ways to disable the wifi and you should be all set now.

My problem is very simple. I have two computers, a macbook pro and a prebuilt PC. While connected to ethernet, my macbook gets around 600-700 upload. While this same ethernet is connected to my PC, my upload SPEED is 100-200. my network adapter is capable of a gig up and down, with the specific model being Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE Family Controller. The drivers are up to DATE with their website. What COULD possibly be causing this issue?

Solve : Understanding/Clarifying Internet/broadband service speeds?

Answer»

I HOPE a Internet/Network/Broadband expert can help me. I am shopping for a home in Northern US, and must make a decision based on certain CRITERIA: one of the main ones is the Internet service. Nationwide, it's hard to find high numbers on speed--most seem to be 25Mbps, unless you find a highly populated area, that gets 100+. (I won't be moving to a highly populated area. I want to be around nature, so often that means bad coverage and services.)
But...
The confusion for me is that I get 300-500 Mbps where I am, but my service can be slow & unreliable. So how can 25Mbps elsewhere be considered fast enough for streaming and heavy use, as they say? That does NOT COMPUTE, logically, for me.
Is it about WHERE you are, how many use it in that area, which company, which type? (DSL, Sat, Cable, fiber, etc).

Since I will be buying a forever home, I don't want to get stuck with substandard speed. I "cut the cable" and have three streaming services for my television (Sling, NETFLIX, Hulu) and I use video/YouTube, social media, do lots of online research, and do some uploading, too, as an Indie Author and Publisher. (My SPOUSE also plays World of Warcraft, so she needs to be able to do online gaming).

Can anyone clarify this for me?
Thanks for any insight.

Solve : Bypass router for 1 device/Wifi?

Answer»

Is it possible to bypass the ROUTER for just one device but still have wifi?

I might be wording that wrong, so Ill tell you my situation. When I connect hardwired to my router I GET like 98 down when I connect DIRECTLY from the wall I get like 500 down. I really don't care about wifi that much I still want it but I basically want to connect my desktop directly from the wall but still have wifi AVAILABLE. I don't want to run my desktop hardwired from the router. What would be the solution for this?Hotspot works best remotely. Make sure you have a strong signal.

Solve : Home Network Wifi Issues?

Answer»

This might be a tough question to answer as I have ALREADY tried by contacting my ISP and I didn't get very far with their response. As a result of extensive ongoing use of smart phones and other devices, I have been forced to cut down on internet use for my kids. I felt the best way to do this is by controlling their access to our home wifi. I am the only one who has a hard-wired device in the house. My ISP has a modem login site where I can locate individual devices and block access anytime. The problem is that my 15-year old son has found a way to bypass this access block. So when I go into the site and try to block his access, it will not allow me to save my block settings! There are other ways to disable the wifi but they create additional problems for myself. I would PREFER to

Can anyone suggest any ways or ideas as to how I can get this access block to work and overturn whatever it is he is doing? If you need more details on anything including the ISP, modem, etc., don't hesitate to ask. I would really like to regain control for the health and SAFETY of my kids! THANKS. Have you tried resetting the router using the reset pinhole at the back? Most devices have one that you can hold for ~30 seconds and it will clear the configuration. This honestly sounds like a firmware bug to me; I've lost count of the quirks I've had to work around when using the provided modem/router combo from the ISPs.

Unrelated to the control panel not allowing you to block, I'm ALMOST certain that the router is using MAC filtering to deny the devices, and MAC addresses can be changed/spoofed using software. I could be wrong about your router, however.

Solve : TP-Link Extender?

Answer»

Anyone have any luck with these?

I find my devices DONT attach "automatically" to the EXTENDER no matter how I configure it.

If I tell my printer to connect to the network through the extender, my devices can't print ANYMORE. (Don't get me started on wireless printers!)

Who don't say what model TP_link extender you have. Some have a sleep option to conserve power which cause clients to need to reconnect.
I like to use ethernet over power devices. They WORK really well if you FOLLOW the installation instructions.
I've tried a couple, most lately the AC-1750. All seem to be garbage.

I presume you mean something like this?

I used the PowerLines in the past, but I'm in an apartment building, so I had less faith in the "follow the WIRE" ability... And you need a second router/bridge then, right?

Solve : Cannot Browse All China Websites?

Answer»

Since a few weeks ago, my sister's laptop suddenly become unable to browse all China websites. It can display only the main page, but if you CLICK on any link, it will show "This site can't be reached."

It happens to all browsers, and only China websites.

It happens only if the laptop is connected to the wi-fi. No problem if connected to the mobile hotspot.

Is it caused by some settings in the modem or network connection?

Hi Green,

Here are the situations with different connections:

Laptop on wifi - cannot.
Laptop on mobile hotspot - can.
Phone on mobile data - sometimes can, sometimes cannot.
Phone on wifi - sometimes can, sometimes cannot.

How to trace a route to the website?

Thanks. My sister brought her laptop to her friend's house, using the wifi there (same ISP), she can browse the Chinese websites on her laptop with no problem.

So as I suspected from the beginning, there must be something to do with her modem/router that blocks those website. Strictly anecdotal, but are the issues strictly happening on an AT&T FIBER connection? A few friends and I were troubleshooting an interesting problem around 3 months ago, where some Chinese sites wouldn't load when using an AT&T fiber connection. A traceroute would terminate around a hop before leaving the AT&T network.

If you're curious, you can open a command prompt and run TRACERT and the ip address of the site to get a rough idea of all the routers you're going through. You may have to copy the domain out of the URLs the FAILING links are pointing in order to get the actual ip addresses to trace.

Solve : Cannot Establish Stable Wifi Connection?

Answer»

Laptop OS: Windows 10 x64
Version: 10.0.15063 Build 15063
Model: HP Stream Laptop 14-ax0XX
Processor: Intel N3060
Connection: Wireless
Router make/model: CENTURYLINK C4000XG
Network adapter: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265

Now I am not exactly sure on the type of internet that is used here. I am not experienced in network troubleshooting and configuration. I am confident it isn't cable and I think it may be DSL when looking at the connection from the outlet to my router.

The internet is provided within the apartment complex. They are new and modern. We just use our own routers. The internet speed is great wirelessly and when hard wired it is extremely fast. I have several devices connected throughout the apartment including the bedroom. I'm using the laptop fairly close to the router (within 8 ft or so). I cannot get the laptop to connect wirelessly for very long.

When I attempt to connect to wifi, it will momentarily connect for 15-20 and then disconnect. This usually happens about every 60-120 seconds. Sometimes it won't connect at all when attempting to do so.

Now this where it gets weird. The laptop connects just fine to the internet wirelessly at my parents house and none of my other devices have any trouble connecting wirelessly at my place. The laptop is the only device that can't seem to establish a stable connection. Does anyone know what in the heck is going on or have any suggestions? Any suggestions on resolving this would be greatly appreciated.

Things I have tried:
1. Resetting the Router and restarting laptop
2. Turning off firewalls (Virus protection is native)
3. Changing power management settings in network adapter properties (unchecked 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power')
4. Factory reset
5. Resetting network adapters.
6. Checked for driver updates in settings. (Everything seemed good and no missing devices)

I did mess around with some Ipv4 network setting but it didn't fix my problem so I reset the network settings to defaults. I thought maybe it has SOMETHING to do with bandwidth or the access POINT? I just don't understand why it connects ELSEWHERE but not here. I am thinking about buying an ethernet adapter because I can't seem to identify the problem.

Thanks for taking the time to review the information I have submitted. I know this post is long but I wanted to be thorough.

Note: This is the second time this has happened when using the laptop. This problem has also occured when living at another location using the same router but the provider may be different than what the apartment uses. Thought this info may be important I can't explain why your laptop works flaky with your router, it could be that the wifi adapter is simply not compatible with your router.

One possible fix is to purchase an inexpensive USB wifi adapter and see if it improves things. I have used tiny, little USB wifi adapters in the past and have had excellent results with them. https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-wireless-network-Adapter-SoftAP/dp/B008IFXQFU/ref=sr_1_6?crid=22I5EGX10TRUH&dchild=1&keywords=usb+wifi+adapter+for+pc&qid=1624544681&sprefix=usb+wifi%2Caps%2C250&sr=8-6

Solve : E-mail: Why mail servers might block messages?

Answer»

Hello,

I have e-mail service provided by two of the largest telecommunications operators in the world: Deutsche Telekom and La Poste S.A. (France).

There is a strange issue with both systems, where a small proportion of people (maybe 2%?) cannot send me e-mail. So far it has mainly been certain large multinational companies, NGOs, etc.

I have purchased e-mail service from other large operators such as Protonmail, CompuServe and many others. I have never seen this issue before.

To anyone with knowledge of SMTP networking: What WOULD cause a Mail Transfer Agent to fail to send to my ISP MTA?

A spam filter seemed like a simple answer. However, there is no trace of bounced or filtered messages. There is also no pattern as to the blocked organisations or their domain names — and some (multinational corporations) seem far too large to be appearing on spam lists.

Thank you for your assistance.

K.You MIGHT be able to get help from Deutsche Telekom and La Poste S.A. ( France ) to have AFFECTED customers have a loopback TEST performed where they test communications between affected customer and your e-mail to see where its getting LOST at. You have no trace of it ever getting to you when checking spam filter and so it seems as though its an issue that is outside of your control to directly troubleshoot locally and you will need help of providers to chase it down.

Solve : How to tell if friend's PC is using a VPN?

Answer»

Well, a friend of mine who is in his eighties asked me to take a look at his PC because he was getting all sorts of pop up notifications telling him it was infected with viruses. To MAKE a long story short, he's running Windows 10 on a newer 3.7 Ghz Intel with 8 GB of RAM.

So, as I was looking through the programs INSTALLED on his machine, I noticed that he had something called Cyber Ghost, and also another VPN program which I don't recall the name of right at the moment. So, I asked this friend of mine if hew was using a VPN, but he didn't know, so I just left the two programs installed on his machine. If he were using a VPN, then wouldn't he have pay a monthly bill for the service?

I'm a little bit concerned about this, because I know that in the past his bank account was hijacked, so I'm wondering if someone could have put this software onto his machine as a means of gaining remote access to it. What are some of the potential consequences of uninstalling this software if he is actually using a VPN?

I'd SUGGEST backing up his data, and a clean installation. Clean installs wont have any VPNs installed. And if he fell into any trap of letting anyone connect to it remotely somehow there can be backdoors hidden on the system. Some who are in the field of accessing peoples systems illegally dont make their presence known and they just monitor their host systems and information gather as much as they can and not necessarily go for instant malicious intent or ransom attack demanding money. Some out there add systems compromised to their collection of systems that can be USED for DDoS attacks as zombies as DDoS attacks need strength in numbers of systems all attacking a target at the same time.

Full Clean install is best after a backup of data to external drive, thumb drive, or cloud storage of a GMAIL account where you get 15GB free storage in the Google Drive.

Solve : LCD and computer share a common wifi??

Answer»

My computer is CONNECTED to wifi and I have an Ethernet port on my LCD, if I plug one end of the cable into the Ethernet port and one end into the router, will I be able to connect to wifi?I am not sure about your question.
Here is a quote from a search:
Quote

Most of the wireless routers and access points state they can support about 250 devices connected at once. This WiFi connection number includes computers, cameras, tablets, smartphones, appliances, and a wide variety of other devices that are now internet-enabled.

Any router with both Wireless and Ethernet will give IPs to all on the network. So you should not have problem. Thank you very much, I will try it.What do you mean "LCD"? LIQUID crystal displays do not have Ethernet. Perhaps you a referring to a television. Modern televisions use Ethernet to set the clock to the correct time, download firmware UPDATES, and to run all those video apps that commonly come installed on the TV (oh, and to track your behavior for marketing data).

When you plug your TV into your router using a cable and connect your computer via wi-fi you are connecting them to the same network (your home network), part of which is wired and part of which is wireless.

So, if "I" REFERS to your computer, you would ALREADY be connected to wi-fi. If "I" refers to the TV, then no, you won't be able to connect to wi-fi because the TV is already connected by Ethernet cable (or it doesn't have wi-fi connectability). If it does have wi-fi connectability, the TV typically allows it to connect to your network only one way or the other. You can usually configure which one to use in your TV's settings, although I have heard of a TV that uses the Ethernet cable if it is plugged in, and uses wi-fi if the Ethernet cable is not plugged in.He means his display - many modern displays have extra usb ports. And last warning - stop resurrecting dead / old threads.

Solve : REMOTE ADMIN OF SERVER 2003 VIA VPN?

Answer»

How would I set a VPN service so I can do remote administration on my Server 2003 machines from my xp pro machine ?If the machines are on the same physical network, a VPN connection is not necessary. You can just use RDP. Please PROVIDE a little more information about how these computers are connected?I have to agree with Rob ... I would user RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) if it is on the same network.

If it is not there are a NUMBER of options. You can use something like RealVNC. However i find the best method for my setup is using a FREE VPN client called LogMeIn Hamachi. It can be FOUND here -->https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/vpn.asp

It is very easy to setup and you can add all the servers you need to maintain for free. (There may be a cap, but i haven't hit it.) Also once you set it up, you can control all the computers/servers using RDP.

I hope this helps.

Solve : IP address question?

In the FUTURE, I will be wanting to set up a MULTIPLAYER gaming LAN for playing games with some of the friends I hang out with on Fridays. Both computers I currently have internet access with have the same IP address. (69.14.57.100). To enable multiplayer gaming, I've heard that each computer should have a different IP address. Both computers I currently have internet access with have the same IP address. (69.14.57.100). To enable multiplayer gaming, I've heard that each computer should have a different IP address. How would I go about doing this?
1. Within a local area network (LAN), each computer must have a "unique" IP address in order to communicate properly. The procedures to set it may vary from operating system to operating system...

See How do I change my IP address? or reference "2.b" below.

2. Reference(s):
a. Home Network, Wireless Network and Computer Networking Made Easy
b. How to Set IP Address and Other Network Information in Windows XPI see. The IP address I GAVE was given to me by a website. The IP address I was looking for wasn't that one. The IP address I had found earlier turned out to be that for the network. The computer's IP address was found under the wireless connection or local area connection properties. They were different, as they should be. It seems like the network is already set up. However, there's a computer with no network connection in the basement that lacks an ethernet card, and it will NEED one. That computer will get an IP address assigned to it when the card is installed, but I can't do it tonight as the card hasn't come in the mail.Okay... Microsoft ALSO did a nice writeup for home networks using Windows XP.

See the "links" under the "Networking How-To Center" subheading. One thing I didn't tell you is that the computer I'm installing an ethernet card into has Windows 95 as the operating system. The link you provided is helpful, but not what I need.

Solve : Belkin N+ Network Drive?

Answer»

I decided to set up a network drive today. Problem is, networking isn't my forte and I'm at a loss of how to access the drive. The Belkin Router says that it recognizes the drive, but I'm not sure how to access it remotely. Help please?Quote from: BaRR on February 11, 2010, 02:29:31 PM

The Belkin Router says that it recognizes the drive...
1. What does this mean? How, where, and what does it say...

2. Is this "network drive" a self-contained unit that plugs directly into the network (plugs into ethernet switch or hub; not connected directly to a computer port)?

3. What is the make and model name/number of this product (network drive)? Thanks for the response. As long as the USB drive isn't unsupported, the USB indicator on the router should turn blue. It turned blue just like the manual said it would, but I don't know how to access it.

This is the product: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=459640

Basically, the router has a USB port on the back which you plug a USB stick or external hard drive into, and you should be able to access it from other computers on the network. I'm not sure how to go about this, though, as I've never networked anything besides my Dell (Actually Lexmark, branded Dell) Printer.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/mapdrive.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/windows_share_your_folders.mspx?mfr=trueOk, that's helpful. But it doesn't solve my problem, because the drive isn't showing in the Networking section.

[Saving SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]1. I've found three Belkin references relevant to the USB storage device that you may attach to your router:
a. F5D8235-4 N+ Wireless Router - Product Manual (aka User Manual)
b. F5D8235-4 N+ Wireless Router - Storage Manager Software
c. Which Hard drives are compatible with the N+ router

Please note, Windows 7 is not listed as a compatible operating system for the optional Storage Manager Software. Perhaps the documentation hasn't caught up with the product...

2. User Manual. See pages 20 through 21 within the PDF document (using page numbers in the document). If you install the optional Storage Manager Software, they claim the storage device will appear as a drive letter within your "My Computer" folder on each computer the software is installed. They also claim use of this software permits you to safely eject the device. Software appears to be available on setup CD that came with your router or the download page reference given above (don't know if they are same version or whether update is available).

If you choose not to install the software, they claim you can access the storage device from any computer using its device name (VOLUME label?). For example, from a browser address box enter "\\192.168.2.1\DeviceName" without the quotes. I think on Windows XP you could also access device from Start -> Run box using same address "\\192.168.2.1\DeviceName".

Another interesting feature, they claim if you plug a suitable USB hub into the USB port of the router; you can share up to four USB storage devices through it (you must provide adequate power to hub and drives).

Interesting... Let us know how it works out.Thanks. That's actually why I asked the QUESTION here, the manual isn't very helpful. So FAR, the ONLY error messages I've gotten from the router weren't COVERED in the manual. Go figure. I'll try the software out and see if it works on W7, I've had many Vista apps run just fine on it.AFAIK the software doesn't seem to be compatible with Windows 7, but I'm just confirming what you already said. These links report some success (and what they did):
a. Can not map network drive on Belkin N+ (Good stuff starts at Response 17)
b. WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage

Solve : Local Area Network unplugged but its not?

Answer»

I need some help. I am pulling my hair out.
my internet connection says it is unplugged and it isn't. I have checked the wires and they work fine on another computer. I have three other computers hooked to the same router and they all work fine. I have checked the drivers for the network adapter in device manager and all works properly. On my computer it is a built in nic card to the mobo even so I WENT outand bought a new nic card just to try it and it is doing the samething. I uninstalled and rolled back the drivers and i get nothing. It all started with an error message saything that explorer had to close it gave me 30 seconds and automatically restarted the computer and when it reset the network was unplugged so I think it is a software problem just can't figure it out.
I have windows Xp service pack 3

Any help would be greatly appreciated1. What is the "status" of the NIC LEDs (on/off, steady/blinking, green/amber/yellow)?

2. Use Command Prompt window.
a. Bring up a Command Prompt window. Run -> Start -> type "cmd" without quotes and hit key.

b. Check the TCP/IP stack using the IPv4 loopback address. Does "ping 127.0.0.1" COMPLETE successfully?

c. Check your own IP address. Use "ipconfig" to get your address, then "ping " (enter your address without the "<>". What does it SAY?the Led is off
when I run comand prompt it says Media STATE....................: media disconnectedProbably a bad NIC

Alan <>< that is what I thought but I went and bought a new one yesterday and it is doing the samething. 1. There's lots of stuff in reference "a" below that you could look at. Beyond that, I don't know...

Did you try the obvious? Disconnect end of cable from one working computer and connect it to yours. (So you're using a known good cable in a known good LAN port of router.)

2. NIC. What is the make and model number of the NIC card?

3. Reference(s):
a. How to troubleshoot the following message in Windows XP: "A network cable is unplugged"
b. Windows Network Problem Solver - Hans-Georg MichnaYou mentioned you uninstalled and rolled back the drivers. Did you reinstall them?

In device manager, are there any yellow question or exclamation marks?Quote

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Have you done these?
1. Replace the cable. Not test it, replace it.
2. Put the NIC in another slot?
3. Do the whole Network WIZARD over again?

Solve : Westell 327W assigning wrong IP address?

Answer»

Hey everyone I have a weird problem that I can not seem to figure out and can not seem to find a solution for.

My problem: The problem is every time I turn on a computer, my router a westell 327w gives all my computer the following settings: These are the wrong settings and no where in my router are these numbers even mention..

Quote

IP address: 5.100.8.166 <- I have no idea why this specific IP address!
Subnetmask: 255.0.0.0
Ip address:
DNS:
WINS:

Warning: Ip address conflict it is currently in use.

The router assigns every computer I turn on this IP setting. I check the DCHP and no where does it even mention these settings. I know my router works because every computer I have on can still use the internet fine.. My router is not providing my computers with the right settings!

The right settings that are listed on the router is:
Quote
IP address: 192.168.1.xx
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
IP address: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1

The only way I can fix this is either
A) manually assign the settings, which I should not have to do in TC/IP settings
B) Shutdown the router, unplug and turn it back on and have every computer that is on get a new IP address.
C) Keep the computer on 24/7

I have tried to restore the router back to factory settings, reset the router and it did not fix the problem at all. It will still give computers that are turn on the 5.100.xx.xx IP address

What I have found is that the router does not free up the IP address when a computer disconnect. The computer does not acquire a new IP address when its in use so it gets that useless 5.100.xx.xxx IP address.

Also why that specific Ip address? Out of every Ip address why an Ip address that does not exist?

I also looked at the logs of the router and it is not indicating any error or problems so this one has me stumped..Are you using the latest firmware version available for your router?Verizon flashed my firmware a few years ago without my knowledge. I still don't know how they did that with remote access disabled and firewall set at medium status: (Lock all but basic ports, but allows manual open ports)

I was just surfing the Internet one day and then I lost connection. I checked my router and when I connected to the router, it had a new interface and new setting. I still don't know how they connect to my router and flash without my permission or knowledge.

This problem started happening last week. the week before that it was working fine. i don't know if verizon flashed my router without me knowing again or might firmware suddenly going bad.. I guess I should find the firmware and re-flash it to see what happens.

Could to many computers cause this problem? I have 3 computers on Ethernet and 4 wireless. My Ip assigned range is 192.168.1.40-192.168.1.60 so 20 internal ip addresses. If you're going to update the firmware, make sure you install the correct version for your make and model (very important or your router will be broke )... Make sure it's the latest version as well.. Don't get something outdated, although older firmware versions seemed to have worked better than the latest in some cases..

I'm not so sure it's a problem with the firmware though.. Your router was working and now it is not, it's likely some other problem, but using the latest firmware never hurts..1. DHCP Server Detection. You could download and run Microsoft's "Rogue DHCP Server Detection" (RogueChecker.exe). See what DHCP servers it detects, and where they live (DHCP server IPv4 address).

I believe it requires Windows XP operating system (or newer).
http://majorgeeks.com/Rogue_DHCP_Server_detection_d6147.html

2. Router. Which Westell 327W do you have?
o B90-327W15-06
o C90-327W30-06
o D90-327W11-06

"Rogue DHCP Server Detection"

I myself thought it could be a malware issue in the router, but I've never encountered a problem like this so I wasn't sure what to thinkHi to provide an update. I re-flashed my firmware on my router and it is still assigning bad DCPH settings. It is still giving me the 5.100.xx.xxx Ip addresses.

My router is A90-327W15-06

Here are some pics on my settings and what it is picking up. According to this it is picking up a 5.100 as a DCPH setting.. I don't know where this setting is located though I looked through the entire router setting and can't find it anywhere.

The only thing that uses the 5.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address in the house is Hamachi LAN and those use Subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 The router is currently affecting all computers, those with and without Hamachi

I got my firmware here:
http://www.verizon.net/central/vzc.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=vzc_help_contentDisplay&linkflag=guestonly_noregion&case=VersaLinkFix

It is the latest one 4.4.3, so I am at a total lost, where can this 5.xxx.xx setting be?

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]1. It APPEARS to be originating from your use of "Hamachi". From plugin-Hamachi_User_Manual.pdf:
Quote
Every Hamachi client has one virtual IP address in the 5.x.x.x range.

2. Do you have a "5.0.0.1" Hamachi address on your network?

3. If you disconnect cable on WAN side of router (keeping LAN side connectivity) and reboot your machines, do they still pick up the Hamachi addresses? This would prevent communication with any external DHCP server.

Then release the IP address and reboot? This would remove any "cached" assigned IP address.

You may have to include a "connection" name on the command (wildcard "?" and "*" characters may be used). Use "ipconfig /?" to get help on the command syntax, and "ipconfig /release" to release the current leased address.1. I believe the "router" is OK. It would not be assigning IPv4 addresses outside the range you've configured it for. You need to look at Hamachi and how you have it configured. Getting IPv4 addresses within their assignment range (and "public" to boot) would be too much of a coincidence for Hamachi not to be involved.

2. If your computers are set to automatically get TCP/IP parameters upon boot, they broadcast a DHCP request onto your local area network. (Normally these broadcast requests will not pass through the router.) Your computer is going to accept TCP/IP configuration parameters from the first DHCP server to respond. Normally, the closest one responds first (because, well - it's closer).

3. Your IP addresses are "apparently" being assigned by a DHCP server located at IP address "5.0.0.1". This address and the one offered to your computer for use are within the range of "virtual" IP addresses Hamachi uses to establish their Virtual Private Networks (usually used to set up a logical LAN across public network, e.g. Internet). I don't know if that DHCP server is on your local area network (behind the home router) or across the Internet (through a VPN link you've setup?).

4. I wouldn't expect your computer to boot directly into a VPN connection.
a. What do you use Hamachi for?
b. Do you have a Hamachi "client" program scheduled to run at system startup?
c. Do you have multiple network connections defined?
d. Is one of them set as the "default"?

Big caveat here - I've never used a VPN or Hamachi software...

5. Simplify the problem domain you're working with to "isolate" the origin of the "5.0.0.1" DHCP server.
a. Ensure DHCP server function within router is enabled to assign addresses in a range known to you.
b. Disconnect cable from WAN side connection of router, so you cannot reach an external DHCP server (off your local area network).
c. Reboot one of your computers.
d. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router? (An IP address of 169.254.x.x means no DHCP server responded.)

-----
e. Disconnect or shutdown all of the computers connected to the LAN side of router (both wired and wireless) except for one to eliminate possibility they are hosting 5.0.0.1 DHCP server. (Preferably keep computer hard-wired to router.)
f. On the lone computer, use "ipconfig /release" or "ipconfig /release *" to release the lease for its current IP address.
g. Then try an "ipconfig /renew" to get a new address.
h. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router?
i. If not, release the IP address again.
j. Reboot the lone computer.
k. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router?

------
l. Try a different computer?

4. I wouldn't expect your computer to boot directly into a VPN connection.
a. What do you use Hamachi for?

My BROTHER and I, we use hamachi as a social network in which we can see who is online and set up virtual "LAN" games with each other. This saves us a lot of trouble of always having to configure our firewall and it helps improve connection speed.

b. Do you have a Hamachi "client" program scheduled to run at system startup?

Yes, When you install Hamachi it comes with software/client with a Static LAN 5.xxx.xxx.xx IP addresses. That address is how your friends find you and how they can connect to you. When you start your computer that client comes up and the application starts. If a computer does not have hamachi installed there is no secondary network connection setup as a virtual connection ( see image below)

This has never affected every computer or any computer on the network before because it has its own settings configured and the real ethernet card is assigned to get settings from the router.

c. Do you have multiple network connections defined?

All computers are set to connect to 1 network. MyHomeNet through the routers IP address of 192.168.1.80.(sharing files and printing There is no other network configured)

d. Is one of them set as the "default"?

The default connection is Local Area Network 1. Which is the real Ethernet card, its job is to get its settings from the router.

Big caveat here - I've never used a VPN or Hamachi software...

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamachi for more information, the picture on the right is the software/client that a user gets. The white empty field would be your network and your friends with there hamachi ip addresses.

5. Simplify the problem domain you're working with to "isolate" the origin of the "5.0.0.1" DHCP server.

a. Ensure DHCP server function within router is enabled to assign addresses in a range known to you.

I checked and there is Public LAN and private LAN, public is disabled and private is enabled. The screenshot above the (white one) Shows the settings that should be assigning to all computers.

b. Disconnect cable from WAN side connection of router, so you cannot reach an external DHCP server (off your local area network).
c. Reboot one of your computers.
Ok, I did test it with a computer with and without hamachi and I am getting a disconnect message and unable to connect message. I replugged in the cable and it gave me a hamachi IP address

I shut down all my computers and started them up one at a time. They are still recieving the hamachi LAN DCHP settings, even though the computer itself does NOT have hamachi installed.

f. On the lone computer, use "ipconfig /release" or "ipconfig /release *" to release the lease for its current IP address.

I did that and use repair and it is still assigning me that IP address.

g. Then try an "ipconfig /renew" to get a new address.
h. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router?
i. If not, release the IP address again.
j. Reboot the lone computer.

k. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router?
I think the router is assigning me this IP still because all the computers were off and I turned one on without hamachi and still got a Hamachi LAN network.

------
l. Try a different computer?

It is wierd because this started happening out of nowhere,(last week) I can not seem to isolate the problem. I rotate between every computer and they are all being assigned that IP address with or without hamachi. No one has access to the router but me and I check the logs and no one but myself has signed in and no configurations seem to have been altered..

The screen shot below is the hamachi LAN settings. the settings are the same for all computers with Hamachi[ the IP is different but the DNS settings and stuff are all the same.
Computers without hamachi are getting hamachi settings.. The screenshots above was from a computer without hamachi installed.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]1. Safe Mode. Boot up one of your computers (Windows XP Pro if you have it) into "Safe Mode". This should boot a minimal configuration of "services" and "drivers" (hopefully without starting any VPN components).
a. Does this computer currently have Hamachi client on it?
b. Did it ever have the Hamachi client on it?
c. What IP address was assigned (5.x.x.x or 192.168.1.x)?
d. What does the routing table look like?
(1) To display table use "route print" without quotes from Command Prompt window. "route print > output.txt" will direct command output into file "output.txt" if you wish to "post" it.
(2) Any 5.x.x.x or 192.168.1.x entries? One or the other or both?

2. Safe Mode with Networking. Now try booting the computer into "Safe Mode with Networking". Any changes.

3. Normal Mode. Now boot the computer into "Normal" mode. Look at the IP address and routing table. Any changes.

4. Disconnect WAN Cable. Earlier when you disconnected WAN cable to ISP and booted up a computer (one with Hamachi, one without); you said: Quote
I am getting a disconnect message and unable to connect message. I replugged in the cable and it gave me a hamachi IP address.
If you hadn't reconnected the cable, would you have gotten an IP address assigned (169.254.x.x, 192.168.1.x, or 5.x.x.x)?Im officially annoyed, I have been trying to figure out here this 5.xx is coming from and frankly I think the router is broadcasting ti when it should not be!!

Anyways, I switched from LAN to WAN and I got 169.xx.xxx.xxx Ip addresses. I could not get on the internet or anything but at least when I restarted the computers I got the WAN Ip address.

This is so fustrating.. I think I might just go get a new DSL modem and HOPE this all goes away. I flashed the router 2x and I even reset to factory default and dispite testing it on 7 COMPUTERS! it is 80/20 80% of getting 5.xx.xxx IP address and 20 of actual getting the right IP address!

Now when I turn off the router and back on not all of them will even get the right IP address! Most will get the right settings but some will get the 5.166.xxx.xx IP address!

If this is happen on 7 computers I know its not the computers that are causing the problem especially since I tested 1 computer at a time.

3x ethernet cable and 4x wireless.1. Router. While it might not be configured correctly, I believe the router itself is OK (functioning as designed). It is not generating the "5.x.x.x" IP addresses. I think you want router configured as a "Private LAN".

Earlier I asked you to disconnect WAN cable and reboot a computer. (I hoped to see what TCP/IP configuration it would assign if unable to reach WAN.) You replied:Quote
I did test it with a computer with and without hamachi and I am getting a disconnect message and unable to connect message. I replugged in the cable and it gave me a hamachi IP address

What IP address does it assign when WAN is disconnected? I would expect either "169.254.x.x" or "192.168.1.x". If it's not an Hamachi computer, it shouldn't even be trying to access the WAN (unless you have startup configured to access WAN - in which case you should boot to "Safe Mode".) I think it's either getting the "5.x.x.x" from Hamachi on WAN or an Hamachi configuration file left on the computer.

2. 169.254.x.x Address(es). These are Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) values assigned by the Windows operating system when it is unable to acquire one from a DHCP server. They are not assigned by your ISP or router (DHCP server) and they are not routable (hence no Internet access). See Link-local IPv4 addresses.

3. Routing Tables. Look at the routing tables on both the router and your computers. It would be interesting to see whether the computer's routing table contains entries for an assigned "192.168.1.x" address. Also take note of any "persistent" routes (which persist through reboots until manually deleted). From command prompt enter "route print". COMPARE routing tables of Hamachi computer (5.x.x.x) and non-Hamachi computer (192.168.1.x).

c. Hamachi is good news for SOHOs, but not so good for the enterpriseI finally found the computer causing this entire issue!!

I disconnected every computer from my router one at a time until to see if one of the computer was causing all this problem and I found it!

It was my [emailprotected]/storage/backup computer:

Intel Pentium 4 1.8Ghz
1 GB DDR 2700
2 x 320 GB HD
1 x 20 GB Maxtor drive

2 x 10/100/1000 MBPS PCI
1 x integrated intel 10/100Mbps

It has 3 Ethernet ports for a total of 3,100 Mbps (theoretic transfer)

Unplugging every computer in the house worked! The problem was all these computers are workstation computers, those who are connected to the router via Ethernet cable would still be on. If the computer is shut off the Ethernet cards would still be active/communicating with the router. I will switch it so they shut off when the computer shuts off.

This computer was originally used as LAN networking computer and it has all sorts of VPN software installed, I decided to check this computer because it has 3 Ethernet cards 2 PCI and one internal. I had to disconnect all the cables in order for it not to broad cast. If one of them is plugged in it will start giving out the 5.xxx.xxx IP address again.

it did have hamachi installed, however it was using v1.1x and it was never fully configured. I un-install it and any vpn software that is left behind to be on the safe side.

I guess that storm which caused the entire house to lose power somehow messed up the settings on that computer.. I opened it up while servicing and thank goodness I did. I guess that computer was crying for help. The HD was getting hot 50 Celsius one of the fans stopped working. The CPU was getting clogged. I will service it and put it up soon.

Unfortunately this computer has no monitor so I had to go move one of my desktop monitors to it.. I guess I should go work on it. The virus definitions and software are 5 months outdated and I did not install any windows update on it.

At least its not broadcasting 5.xx.xxx.xx anymore. Now it is giving me other issues, but I can fix those slowly. Anyways I'm glad its not the router it was driving me insane!Okay. Nice work!

Solve : Sony vaio, running Windows 7 ultimate?

Answer»

I conncect to the internet through a NETGEAR wireless modem that is secure. All is cool in the AM, then in the PM, my wireless
connection will not work. I have turned off all the Power Management tools for Networking, I went in and set up the Wireless
connection again; still no wireless connection. This AM I physically cabled in to the modem, and I am back on LINE. I had also
check the Network items in the devise manager, and all reported working properly. Any comments? The wireless connection should work anytime of day or night. Logic dictates that it would have to be some factor other that sunlight. Are there any other conditions that would follow a day / night cycle? For example, are there more people in your area using a wireless connection only in the later hours? Or perhaps the is source of interference the starts in the PM.This happened between 3-6PM. I was able to login to the web with my Netbook and my wife was able to use her computer.
It is like my computer just turned of the wireless controllers, but when I checked they were running okay.
Mystery. I also ran the system restore from another date and no luck. Thanks,That is a very interesting story. You have already done the TACTICAL thing, you have restored your computer to a previous condition. In most cases that would repair any problems with software drivers or things of that nature. The fact that it occurs just during a narrow time, --Makes me think it is not something that has anything to do with the computer. Well, there is an exception. It could be that your computer was scheduled to do an update to a software package during that time-frame. However, that is very unlikely. Usually updates are done in the wee hours of the morning, not in the hours of the afternoon.
Now if something like that happened to me, I would suspect it is the local high school that is about a block from here. When school lets out the kids could latch onto my wireless connection and get into the Internet. But my Internet connection is not real fast. Would only take FOUR or five extra users downloading files to shut me out of the system. Or make it go so slow that I would be inclined to RESET the router.
But I suppose you do not have a local high school next to you just one block away and within distance of your wireless router. Oh, and by the way, using WEP encryption on your router will not do much good. Nowadays the kids learn how to get around that before they get out of fourth second grade.
Chat Room with Sony. Very response. Some conflict with Windows 7 and the WLAN Switch and LED. Krystal got me back
up. How do theses Kids learn all the tricks and I don't have a clue. No High School near. Thanks again.Glad you got it fixed.
For future reference, how do you get into the Sony Chat Room?
Please post a link if you can.

Solve : can not find wireless connection under network connections?

Answer»

I moved and had to switch computers around. Before I moved they worked fine.
After the move i made the computer that was my Main(wired) computer into a wireless computer but when i installed the wireless adapter(usb) I can not find a wireless connection under Network Connection. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter different ways. I even tried installing the adapter on a different computer and i got a connection then. Its like something is not letting me get connection. I have a local connection but not wireless.
im using a Dell 2400 with XP SERVICE pack 2When you install the wireless adapter into the computer, is it showing up in Device Manager without any errors?Yes under device manager it says the adapter is working correctly.Hm.

Try this.. Go back into Network Connections, Click on the Advanced on top, select Optional Networking Components, highlight Networking Services and click Details.

Make sure there is a CHECK in the box next to Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client. If there is not a check in that box, check the box and click on OK, then restart the computer..After booting, go into network connection and see if your wireless adapter is showing..

You might WANT to check in Control Panel as well, for managing your wireless adapter.. Dell uses proprietary software in some CASES, for managing network DEVICES.. Look in Control Panel for an icon that resembles a wireless beacon or tower... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870702
