Solve : Exreme Security Annoys me a lot.? |
Answer» Hey Google! Just now I got the same hassle with a Google account. After a big fuss, it asked me to change my password without any evidence that the password was compromised. From here: Quote If there’s suspicious activity in your Google Account or we detect that your password has been stolen, we may ask you to change your password. By changing your password, you help make sure that only you can use your account. As per the thread I referenced. I don't think he ever took the gravity of the compromise of his system seriously. The system was infected with 25 or more pieces of malware which would have most certainly provided access to his account passwords. Running MALWAREBYTES and assuming the problem was fixed has clearly not worked- Google is asking him to change his password because it has detected malicious activity already, unusual sign-in behaviour (eg. wildly different locations) or detected the password was otherwise compromised. Assuming, of course, this happens during sign-in. Google won't send E-mails telling people to change their password- That is phishing and is probably somebody trying to get your current password. Complaining about more or less the "inconvenience of it all" as he is doing here seems to underline to me that he simply isn't taking the problem seriously. Geek-9pm, My recommendation would be to immediately change all your passwords. I bold immediately because I do not mean to merely add it to your to-do list. It should be a top priority. Change all said passwords and make them unique from each other, too. (If necessary you can always resort to writing the passwords down, that is still better than sharing passwords between services) Malware compromise means you cannot trust any passwords you changed while the system was infected. Personally I wouldn't trust the computer at all without a clean install, but that is just me. In addition to that sort of compromise, forums and various services often get compromised on their own Sometimes it is announced, sometimes it isn't, but. If you use the same password on various sites and one of them gets compromised then it becomes that much easier to access your accounts elsewhere using the same password. Furthermore, that information is now often used for attempted extortion. A few weeks ago I got a "scary" E-mail from somebody claiming to be a "hacker" who claimed to know my password and have access to my computer and all my contacts. The password they mentioned was something I used decades ago- I changed it everywhere that mattered entirely because it became part of released "black market" compromised data. One can see how people who don't take security seriously and who complain about the inconvenience of Google asking them to change their password when their account has been compromised could easily fall victim to those E-mails because the Password being accurate due to never being changed offers legitimacy to the rest of their claims. (Which are the standard nonsense, transfer BTC etc etc blah blah the consequences will be dire etc.) Quote from: MichaelNyby on April 06, 2020, 02:41:27 AM Heh, BC_Programmer, you remember what C++ was first called? C with classes, if I've understood the question. Bit of a non-sequiter, though!Quote C with classes, if I've understood the question. Bit of a non-sequiter, though! Very true about that question being off-topic and I am not even sure how or why that thought jumped into my brain. I suspect a faulty brain due to age. I do hope that Geek-9pm and his wife do the NECESSARIES to be sure their systems are secure. The security systems are all there and should be used to good advantage. To my best we have in place secure measures. First thing we limit access to our property. We ignore e-mails fro people we do not know. Right now I do have an issues i can not resolve. My modem will not let me log in. And nobody can help me.TYje solution is to get a new modem. Never has the happened before. It is an ARRIs cable model. 192.168.0.1 is the IP for log in. It enters a security dialog and will not let me in. This started last week.I have to do this off the top of my head because other activities are in dire need of continued attention, but that address is a gateway address correct? Now what jumps out at me is your making a previous note about your wife's computer and if you are both using the same modem I smell a problem could arise. I mean, there are ways to do that, but one has to be sort of careful. Well, more than "sort of" but I suspect you can get better help from BC_Programmer, which certainly has to be true because I really have to scoot. My co-admin on one of my sites hasn't seen my log in for many hours and can very likely see I have been busy elsewhere and will be angry at me. Well, upset more than angry. Hold up on buying another modem, Geek-9pm. Please. it might not be necessary.Quote It enters a security dialog and will not let me in.Do you mean the login you have pictured? That's normal. Most ISPs will put the default credentials on the router. It looks like you've accessed it before. Did you change the password when you did so? If the password is the default, then it is "password" (no quotes). Otherwise, you can factory reset the modem via a pinhole in the back. That will reset everything back to the default and once it boots back up the password will be "password" to get into the router settings. As there was some mention of Gmail in the OP I am going to go ahead and use this thread to ask about something related to Gmail and maybe there will be thoughts some of you might have. I recall a bit back we were being told by the various Gmail Team folks that the security question thingy was no longer being used as a Gmail type security tool, but recently I have had to access my Gmail accounts from hospitals and other not-normal-workstation locations and one thing that always popped up was either finish the partial showing of your support email account or answer a security question. I actually tried to remember an answer to one such request to answer the security question and got it wrong and was then able to simply finish the ID of the security email account, or whatever that email account is called. So what's the deal about that security question? Has anyone in this community recently opened a new Gmail account and been asked to submit a security question? I honestly thought those were no longer being used at Google. |

Answer» Hello, With a lot of money?? :-/ How start-up capital works(Click) How do you expect to start an ISP when you don't own or rent any lines? C'mon, do some research before asking questions. All I would like to know( thats why I posted this THREAD) is how to get connected directly to the internet without get by a first ISP ? The rest I will also do research on. Like I said; ask your neighbour nicely if you can piggyback on his connection. Quote All I would like to know( thats why I posted this thread) is how to get connected directly to the internet without get by a first ISP ?You would need to buy a leased line from your telecoms provider and nail down some fixed IP address ranges. Solve : Practical limit to the size of a hosts file?? |
Answer» I've recently pumped up my hosts file with several different collections of loopback redirects of less-than-desireable sites. My hosts file is now hovering around 2MB and may grow a little bit more. I've searched around, but can't seem to find much readily available information about a practical limit to a hosts file's size. Heres the only significant link I came accross: http://www.techsupportalert.com/issues/issue97.htm (Just search for the word "Personally" on the page and you'll come to the paragraph REFERENCE hosts file size). As you'll see, no hard facts are presented for the writer's views on the hosts file. I'm wondering if having so many entires would bog down the name resolution process.Without a doubt. An intelligent hardware firewall will provide a much more efficient solution. Possibly your router is up to this job.Are there routers that can do that? I think it's cheaper and easier to just have your host file grow out of proportions, mine is 494 KB and I never noticed any slowdowns.Quote QuoteI'm wondering if having so many entires would bog down the name resolution process.Without a doubt. An intelligent hardware firewall will provide a much more efficient solution. Possibly your router is up to this job. I doubt it. It's a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router which has enough features to be fun to play with, but isn't as much fun as something rack mounted. What always made me curious about the hosts file is: why is the IP address first? I would think that the hostname would be first followed by an IP address to map it to. In my mind, that would make it easier for the computer to parse through the text file. Right now there are thousands of "127.0.0.1" entries it has to look through before coming to the hostname. Raptor, my hosts file is a little over 2,000 KBytes. I've attached it to this post. Its actually in two parts to CIRCUMVENT the 250k attachment limitation. Control-c and control-v work nicely. You can try it for yourself and see if it causes problems. Here is an intersting page about large hosts files, the problem that they can allegedly cause, and a purported fix: http://www.ericphelps.com/scripting/samples/Hosts/ In the article, it is suggested that you disable the DNS client service. Sounds interesting. I'll give it a try when I have a spare minute or three. In the meantime, does anyone else have any leads on hosts file size? Thanks,. --OoberHosts file part 2 --O.N.How'd you go about generating all that? I'm still waiting for a Firefox extension that will allow me to write any adress I connect to to host file. =)Quote How'd you go about generating all that? I just Googled around to find some good anti-malware hosts files and found about three. Copy and Paste is a wonderful invention. Here's a link to one of the largest such hosts files: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt It seems to stay very well updated. In fact, its probably the only one I really need, but I thought I'd be *really* thorough and add a few together. I still haven't had a chance at trying the aforementioned disabling of the DNS client service to see if it clears my problems up. BTW, the problem I was having was that I would type a hostname into my browser (apple.com, download.com, whatever) and it would just hang there. However, I've been having simultaneous router problems, so I can't be sure what the source of the problem is. As far as that Firefox hack you were wishing for, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard with a little programming knowledge. Mention it on the Mozilla forums and you may get a response. Or you could always start hacking away at the firefox source code on your own (http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Download_Mozilla_Source_Code). --OoberQuote Here's a link to one of the largest such hosts files: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt /quote]I use that one as well. I keep being surprised at how many ads people make comments on on forums and I'm thinking Advertisements? I don't see any! Yeah, adblock plus and filterset G also keep me ad-free. Funny enough is that I'm also having a bit of trouble with my Router and it happens to be a WRT54G Wireless-G Router as well. I sometimes lose connection for a second or so and then it reconnects; oddly enough my Qtec router never had a problem with that. Although it may have just been the cabling that got jerked loose when I placed my new router; I yet have to see the error/disconnect message after reconnecting the cables. What problems are you having with that Router? It'll just spontaneously stop accepting any traffic whatsoever. ipconfig /all shows everything in order, but no traffic is moved. Not even ICMP. Sometimes ipconfig /renew solves the problem, other times you've got to "bounce" it (unplug the power jack, wait 10 or 15 seconds, and then plug it back in). Weird. --O.N.You might get an answer on MSDN about the theoretical limit of hsots files. Note that many routers are now based on Linux, providing an extremely efficient and highly CONFIGURABLE router/firewall/packet analyser combo. You could drop one of your hosts files into such a router, and I expect you'd get much better results. Or you could set up all kinds of wildcard/IP address range filtering. Bottom line, right tool for job. If you need something that AdblockPlus and a decent software firewall can't cope with, then get a decent hardware firewall. IMHO. |

Solve : USB Drive Won't Stay Mounted? |
Answer» I have a 500GB USB drive plugged into a Netgear C7000 Router. |

Solve : Frame Burst? |
Answer» Frame burst Allows packet bursting which will increase overall network speed. If that is so, why is it disabled by default? Linksys Wireless router / Wireless settingsMaybe Linksys has some info on it on their website, which I have no reason to visit since my router is a D-Link. What specific router are you referring to? Suppose I'll go harass Linksys technical support about it.Packet bursting would theoretically result in more collisions (and HENCE slower perceived network speeds) on a congested network. What does it do?A Google search on packet bursting yields some sources indicating packet bursting improves speeds. Here's one: Packet bursting helps Ethernet scale to gigabit-per-second speeds. It reduces the delay between packet transmission. Hence more packets on the net. Hence more packet collisions on a BUSY net. Not a good idea to USE this is you have more than, say, five machines actively using the same segment of the net. Might work with a switched network though...Thanks. So it's worth turning it on when you only have a Laptop and a router COMMUNICATING wirelessly or is it something you'll never notice?I IMAGINE if you were streaming video over wireless, you might notice the difference. I haven't ever attempted to test it. |

Answer» ok, so. *breaths deeply*

Would you be able to post a photo of the back of your computer? Or maybe give us the Optiplex model number?Hi there I don't suppose you are getting confused between a USB cable and an Ethernet, (RJ45) cable? do a google picture search on google for each type of cable if you are unsure. Solve : Registrar blocked my domain? |
Answer» What to do? I received a complaint about a DOMAIN that I have been using for 5 years. And the registrar immediately blocked my domain. I can’t REACH support for the whole day. UNFORTUNATELY the only one who can do ANYTHING about the domain would be your registrar. So, you'll need to wait until you hear from them. Alternatively, if you can manage the domain through the registrar and it allows you to transfer to another registrar you can transfer the domain. However, I'd ASSUME if it's blocked you probably also cannot change any of the domain settings. |

Solve : Allowing Access to IoT Device from Guest Network? |
Answer» I've created a GUEST Network in my house for... well, if I ever have guests again. Your bit about the 2 NIC-bridge is just a fancy way of saying, "No", isn't it? Well ... if you had one computer that needed access to it and the Amplifier was sitting on the Guest network side it would work for that computer and any other computers with dual NICs connected that way, and anyone connecting to it on Guest network would have access to it. But being on the main network scope and tunneling to that amplifier on the guest network, unless some sort of port forwarding tricks are around to tunnel to it from outside the guest network, it wont be accessible. If the Guest Network Router has DMZ support you could place the Amplifier with a Static IP Address on the DMZ, where the DMZ is your Main Network( This is not setting the Amplifier up on the DMZ of your Main Router or that OPENS up security VULNERABILITIES as well as gives access to amplifier to all who find it on the web.) However to access the Amplifier on the DMZ of the Guest Router you would likely have to change the gateway IP address of the Main Network or those devices that will access the amplifier to the IP Address that the Main Router has given to the Guest Network Router so if the Guest Network Router is given a static IP of 192.168.1.2 and the main network router is on 192.168.1.1 and the Amplifier is on the Guest network at 192.168.2.15 then from the 192.168.1.x network devices there would have access to it at 192.168.2.15 as the request to the gateway would be a request to the Guest Network router which will direct the traffic flow to the Amplifier on the DMZ. I haven't tried what I stated above before but in theory I believe it would work, however those devices with the gateway pointing to resolve through the Guest Router ( I feel wont have internet access until their Gateway IP addresses are set BACK to what they were on the main routers network.) So to make the connectivity work between Main and Guest networks for the Amplifier, its my assumption that you would lose your outbound to the internet for devices connected this way until their gateway IP's are changed back to the outbound to go to the WWW vs further up stream within the home networks. If this all seems like a lot of work to try then... No would be the answer I guess. I've never set up a device this way to make that work, and in theory it should work through DMZ but no guarantee. But it is secure if only Guest Network DMZ setup as the DMZ is local to main network.Thanks. I'm always game to try a theory - provided I have a good backout/contingency plan. Essentially, I'd be doing this so people visiting my house can change the radio station with their phone when I'm not around. So that's such a small real issue - if there was a tick box somewhere to allow it, cool. But...! rjb |

Solve : Securing wireless network? |
Answer» What would be the best way to secure my Wireless networking using a Linksys WRT54G Look in network properties and select the wireless card. Not the tcp/ip but the basic card listing. In its properties, under the advanced tab, there should be an entry for encryption. Select it and it should give you a box to choose the type of encryption to use. Choose the one you want, but make sure the card and router are using the same type. After a reboot, look in the cards configuration utility (in the system tray) and make sure that everything there is properly configured, including the encryption key. That seemed to have somewhat done the trick, although I still can't connect. What protocol do you suggest I use, WPA2 and AES? What is "Key group renewal" and what should it be set to?Quote What protocol do you suggest I use, WPA2 and AES? WPA provides better security. Key Group Renewal is the AMOUNT of time the router waits to renew the keys. It can be set to default (7200) but 3600 is recommended. Register MAC addresses of Network PC’s on Router 1. Obtain the MAC addresses of each PC that will be on your network. This can be done by doing the following on each of the PC’s that will be on your network: * Click Start and choose Run * Type cmd and click OK * Type ipconfig /all * Locate “Physical Address” (It should look something like 00-01-CA-XX-21-10) * This is the MAC address. Repeat this on each computer that is CONNECTED to your network and take note of these numbers. 2. Back in the LinkSys configuration screen, choose the “Advanced” tab from the top. 3. Verify “Filters” is the secondary tab currently selected. 4. Select Enabled in “Filtered MAC Address” 5. Select “Permit PC’s listed below to access the wireless network”. 6. Enter the MAC addresses of each of the PC’s that will be part of your wireless network. 7. Choose Save Settings. In the computers network settings there should be a tab to display wireless networks. If there is more than one SSID listed, make sure yours is at the top of the list. Somehow I can't get it done, I did it exactly as you said multiple times but I end up not being able to connect to the network. At one point I was able to connect (Without any type of security added) but I could only send packets and not receive them for some bizzare reason. Guess I just need to experiment a bit more till I finally get it right, thanks for the information. |

Solve : Laptop takes Not less than 10 minutes to connect to wifi Router? |
Answer» few days ago i bought a router called "Telenet MF286U" from local seller. Is this Router's issue or Laptop wireless card's issue? To see if its a issue with Laptop's wifi I'd go to another wifi connection and see how quickly it is able to connect to that. If the laptop connects quickly then I'd think its an issue with the router itself in it not correctly handshaking to the laptop. Pushing the driver update via Driver Booster 9, I would have AVOIDED as those driver tools usually do more harm than good. Its always best to INSTALL a driver clean downloaded from the maker of the wireless adapter/chipset as the Driver Booster like tools usually come bundled with stuff you dont want added to system. Quote from: DaveLembke on April 26, 2022, 01:40:19 PM To see if its a issue with Laptop's wifi I'd go to another wifi connection and see how quickly it is able to connect to that. If the laptop connects quickly then I'd think its an issue with the router itself in it not correctly handshaking to the laptop. unfortunately i could not find another router/wifi network to test it . but i experienced some strange things. Laptop take much time to connect when it start for 1st time in a day..after 1st successfully connection,it did not take more than 2-3 minutes reconnect if connect manually (WITHOUT restarting laptop) when laptop is trying connect to wifi network for 1st time in it's start,if i switch on phone's wifi ,then laptop takes only 2-3 minutes to connect.which mean phone connect to wifi network withing 1-2mintues ,it caused to reduce connecting time of laptop.. i tried this way few time ,it worked.it is not random thing as i think. Solve : Losing Internet and/or Network Connectivity? |

Answer» I have a TP-Link Deco mesh network with 5 Decos as follows: Congestion refers to when a network is overloaded with data (like roads with cars or the like). In some cases, street traffic is the result of a temporary situation, like high-volume or accidents, much in the same way as congestion on our networks. Other cases present more dynamic or overarching issues, like poor design or needed repairs—more significant matters that require their type of solutions. |

Solve : MY Win 10 Njotebook lost all network? |

Answer» This morning on was on my Acer Notebook and all went well for the ONE hour I was on. After a couple of hours later i booted it and couldn't do anything as far as internet. No network icon at TASK bar and etc. I also have a desktop that is working just fine wirelessly. So my ISP said all is well in my area and said it most likely be a computer problem, which I have to agree. There were no warning signs of the missing Network. Tweaking the problem on my desktop I came across the possibility that EITHER Firewall is preventing it, or of all things, "Airplane mode" is on. Notifications comes up showing among its BOXE's, Airplane mode. It says to click on the box should turn it off. I clicked, but get no verification...so I go to system/security and sure enough I see Airplane mode with the button "ON" and stationary...there was no way of sliding it to off. See the contridiction here? One says its off, the other says it on, So I am left with a Notebook that cannot get on the internet. Not even sure that is the reason why. Does anyone here have any ideas what is going on here?I'd try this: |

Answer» had trouble getting connected because of too many walls, the problem was solved by going the ethernet way, google however keeps putting me back on wi fi, I am trying to make ethernet my priority, I go to settings, network, status, CHANGE adapter options, I right click on Ethernet, properties, and a list appears, Client to M/soft, file printers, Qos packet, Protocol ver 4, microsoft multiplex, LLDP pro driver, internet version 6. All are ticked except MICRO multiplex. NOW WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE? HELPDisable the Wireless Adapter and it will be FORCED to use Ethernet Connection only. Otherwise they may compete and cause a headache as to which is considered the actual gateway out. |

Answer» My problem is very simple. I have two computers, a macbook pro and a prebuilt PC. While connected to ethernet, my macbook gets around 600-700 upload. While this same ethernet is connected to my PC, my upload SPEED is 100-200. my network adapter is capable of a gig up and down, with the specific model being Realtek PCIe 2.5GbE Family Controller. The drivers are up to DATE with their website. What COULD possibly be causing this issue? |

Solve : Understanding/Clarifying Internet/broadband service speeds? |
Answer» I HOPE a Internet/Network/Broadband expert can help me. I am shopping for a home in Northern US, and must make a decision based on certain CRITERIA: one of the main ones is the Internet service. Nationwide, it's hard to find high numbers on speed--most seem to be 25Mbps, unless you find a highly populated area, that gets 100+. (I won't be moving to a highly populated area. I want to be around nature, so often that means bad coverage and services.) |

Solve : Home Network Wifi Issues? |
Answer» This might be a tough question to answer as I have ALREADY tried by contacting my ISP and I didn't get very far with their response. As a result of extensive ongoing use of smart phones and other devices, I have been forced to cut down on internet use for my kids. I felt the best way to do this is by controlling their access to our home wifi. I am the only one who has a hard-wired device in the house. My ISP has a modem login site where I can locate individual devices and block access anytime. The problem is that my 15-year old son has found a way to bypass this access block. So when I go into the site and try to block his access, it will not allow me to save my block settings! There are other ways to disable the wifi but they create additional problems for myself. Solve : LCD and computer share a common wifi?? |
Answer» My computer is CONNECTED to wifi and I have an Ethernet port on my LCD, if I plug one end of the cable into the Ethernet port and one end into the router, will I be able to connect to wifi?I am not sure about your question. Most of the wireless routers and access points state they can support about 250 devices connected at once. This WiFi connection number includes computers, cameras, tablets, smartphones, appliances, and a wide variety of other devices that are now internet-enabled. Any router with both Wireless and Ethernet will give IPs to all on the network. So you should not have problem. Thank you very much, I will try it.What do you mean "LCD"? LIQUID crystal displays do not have Ethernet. Perhaps you a referring to a television. Modern televisions use Ethernet to set the clock to the correct time, download firmware UPDATES, and to run all those video apps that commonly come installed on the TV (oh, and to track your behavior for marketing data). When you plug your TV into your router using a cable and connect your computer via wi-fi you are connecting them to the same network (your home network), part of which is wired and part of which is wireless. So, if "I" REFERS to your computer, you would ALREADY be connected to wi-fi. If "I" refers to the TV, then no, you won't be able to connect to wi-fi because the TV is already connected by Ethernet cable (or it doesn't have wi-fi connectability). If it does have wi-fi connectability, the TV typically allows it to connect to your network only one way or the other. You can usually configure which one to use in your TV's settings, although I have heard of a TV that uses the Ethernet cable if it is plugged in, and uses wi-fi if the Ethernet cable is not plugged in.He means his display - many modern displays have extra usb ports. And last warning - stop resurrecting dead / old threads. |

Solve : IP address question? |
Answer» In the FUTURE, I will be wanting to set up a MULTIPLAYER gaming LAN for playing games with some of the friends I hang out with on Fridays. Both computers I currently have internet access with have the same IP address. (69.14.57.100). To enable multiplayer gaming, I've heard that each computer should have a different IP address. How would I go about doing this?Quote from: Ryan on February 17, 2010, 06:56:18 PM Both computers I currently have internet access with have the same IP address. (69.14.57.100). To enable multiplayer gaming, I've heard that each computer should have a different IP address. How would I go about doing this?1. Within a local area network (LAN), each computer must have a "unique" IP address in order to communicate properly. The procedures to set it may vary from operating system to operating system... See How do I change my IP address? or reference "2.b" below. 2. Reference(s): a. Home Network, Wireless Network and Computer Networking Made Easy b. How to Set IP Address and Other Network Information in Windows XPI see. The IP address I GAVE was given to me by a website. The IP address I was looking for wasn't that one. The IP address I had found earlier turned out to be that for the network. The computer's IP address was found under the wireless connection or local area connection properties. They were different, as they should be. It seems like the network is already set up. However, there's a computer with no network connection in the basement that lacks an ethernet card, and it will NEED one. That computer will get an IP address assigned to it when the card is installed, but I can't do it tonight as the card hasn't come in the mail.Okay... Microsoft ALSO did a nice writeup for home networks using Windows XP. See the "links" under the "Networking How-To Center" subheading. One thing I didn't tell you is that the computer I'm installing an ethernet card into has Windows 95 as the operating system. The link you provided is helpful, but not what I need. |

Solve : Belkin N+ Network Drive? |
Answer» I decided to set up a network drive today. Problem is, networking isn't my forte and I'm at a loss of how to access the drive. The Belkin Router says that it recognizes the drive, but I'm not sure how to access it remotely. Help please?Quote from: BaRR on February 11, 2010, 02:29:31 PM The Belkin Router says that it recognizes the drive...1. What does this mean? How, where, and what does it say... 2. Is this "network drive" a self-contained unit that plugs directly into the network (plugs into ethernet switch or hub; not connected directly to a computer port)? 3. What is the make and model name/number of this product (network drive)? Thanks for the response. As long as the USB drive isn't unsupported, the USB indicator on the router should turn blue. It turned blue just like the manual said it would, but I don't know how to access it. This is the product: http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=459640 Basically, the router has a USB port on the back which you plug a USB stick or external hard drive into, and you should be able to access it from other computers on the network. I'm not sure how to go about this, though, as I've never networked anything besides my Dell (Actually Lexmark, branded Dell) Printer.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/mapdrive.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/windows_share_your_folders.mspx?mfr=trueOk, that's helpful. But it doesn't solve my problem, because the drive isn't showing in the Networking section. [Saving SPACE, attachment deleted by admin]1. I've found three Belkin references relevant to the USB storage device that you may attach to your router: a. F5D8235-4 N+ Wireless Router - Product Manual (aka User Manual) b. F5D8235-4 N+ Wireless Router - Storage Manager Software c. Which Hard drives are compatible with the N+ router Please note, Windows 7 is not listed as a compatible operating system for the optional Storage Manager Software. Perhaps the documentation hasn't caught up with the product... 2. User Manual. See pages 20 through 21 within the PDF document (using page numbers in the document). If you install the optional Storage Manager Software, they claim the storage device will appear as a drive letter within your "My Computer" folder on each computer the software is installed. They also claim use of this software permits you to safely eject the device. Software appears to be available on setup CD that came with your router or the download page reference given above (don't know if they are same version or whether update is available). If you choose not to install the software, they claim you can access the storage device from any computer using its device name (VOLUME label?). For example, from a browser address box enter "\\192.168.2.1\DeviceName" without the quotes. I think on Windows XP you could also access device from Start -> Run box using same address "\\192.168.2.1\DeviceName". Another interesting feature, they claim if you plug a suitable USB hub into the USB port of the router; you can share up to four USB storage devices through it (you must provide adequate power to hub and drives). Interesting... Let us know how it works out.Thanks. That's actually why I asked the QUESTION here, the manual isn't very helpful. So FAR, the ONLY error messages I've gotten from the router weren't COVERED in the manual. Go figure. I'll try the software out and see if it works on W7, I've had many Vista apps run just fine on it.AFAIK the software doesn't seem to be compatible with Windows 7, but I'm just confirming what you already said. These links report some success (and what they did): a. Can not map network drive on Belkin N+ (Good stuff starts at Response 17) b. WD My Book 1TB not recognised by belkin modem router USB storage |

Solve : Westell 327W assigning wrong IP address? |
Answer» Hey everyone I have a weird problem that I can not seem to figure out and can not seem to find a solution for. IP address: 5.100.8.166 <- I have no idea why this specific IP address! Warning: Ip address conflict it is currently in use. The router assigns every computer I turn on this IP setting. I check the DCHP and no where does it even mention these settings. I know my router works because every computer I have on can still use the internet fine.. My router is not providing my computers with the right settings! The right settings that are listed on the router is: Quote IP address: 192.168.1.xx The only way I can fix this is either A) manually assign the settings, which I should not have to do in TC/IP settings B) Shutdown the router, unplug and turn it back on and have every computer that is on get a new IP address. C) Keep the computer on 24/7 I have tried to restore the router back to factory settings, reset the router and it did not fix the problem at all. It will still give computers that are turn on the 5.100.xx.xx IP address What I have found is that the router does not free up the IP address when a computer disconnect. The computer does not acquire a new IP address when its in use so it gets that useless 5.100.xx.xxx IP address. Also why that specific Ip address? Out of every Ip address why an Ip address that does not exist? I also looked at the logs of the router and it is not indicating any error or problems so this one has me stumped..Are you using the latest firmware version available for your router?Verizon flashed my firmware a few years ago without my knowledge. I still don't know how they did that with remote access disabled and firewall set at medium status: (Lock all but basic ports, but allows manual open ports) I was just surfing the Internet one day and then I lost connection. I checked my router and when I connected to the router, it had a new interface and new setting. I still don't know how they connect to my router and flash without my permission or knowledge. This problem started happening last week. the week before that it was working fine. i don't know if verizon flashed my router without me knowing again or might firmware suddenly going bad.. I guess I should find the firmware and re-flash it to see what happens. Could to many computers cause this problem? I have 3 computers on Ethernet and 4 wireless. My Ip assigned range is 192.168.1.40-192.168.1.60 so 20 internal ip addresses. If you're going to update the firmware, make sure you install the correct version for your make and model (very important or your router will be broke )... Make sure it's the latest version as well.. Don't get something outdated, although older firmware versions seemed to have worked better than the latest in some cases.. I'm not so sure it's a problem with the firmware though.. Your router was working and now it is not, it's likely some other problem, but using the latest firmware never hurts..1. DHCP Server Detection. You could download and run Microsoft's "Rogue DHCP Server Detection" (RogueChecker.exe). See what DHCP servers it detects, and where they live (DHCP server IPv4 address). I believe it requires Windows XP operating system (or newer). http://majorgeeks.com/Rogue_DHCP_Server_detection_d6147.html 2. Router. Which Westell 327W do you have? o B90-327W15-06 o C90-327W30-06 o D90-327W11-06 o D90-327W15-06 o D90-327W61-06Quote from: dahlarbear on February 12, 2010, 02:01:07 AM "Rogue DHCP Server Detection" I myself thought it could be a malware issue in the router, but I've never encountered a problem like this so I wasn't sure what to thinkHi to provide an update. I re-flashed my firmware on my router and it is still assigning bad DCPH settings. It is still giving me the 5.100.xx.xxx Ip addresses. My router is A90-327W15-06 Here are some pics on my settings and what it is picking up. According to this it is picking up a 5.100 as a DCPH setting.. I don't know where this setting is located though I looked through the entire router setting and can't find it anywhere. The only thing that uses the 5.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address in the house is Hamachi LAN and those use Subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 The router is currently affecting all computers, those with and without Hamachi I got my firmware here: http://www.verizon.net/central/vzc.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=vzc_help_contentDisplay&linkflag=guestonly_noregion&case=VersaLinkFix It is the latest one 4.4.3, so I am at a total lost, where can this 5.xxx.xx setting be? [Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]1. It APPEARS to be originating from your use of "Hamachi". From plugin-Hamachi_User_Manual.pdf: Quote Every Hamachi client has one virtual IP address in the 5.x.x.x range. 2. Do you have a "5.0.0.1" Hamachi address on your network? 3. If you disconnect cable on WAN side of router (keeping LAN side connectivity) and reboot your machines, do they still pick up the Hamachi addresses? This would prevent communication with any external DHCP server. Then release the IP address and reboot? This would remove any "cached" assigned IP address. You may have to include a "connection" name on the command (wildcard "?" and "*" characters may be used). Use "ipconfig /?" to get help on the command syntax, and "ipconfig /release" to release the current leased address.1. I believe the "router" is OK. It would not be assigning IPv4 addresses outside the range you've configured it for. You need to look at Hamachi and how you have it configured. Getting IPv4 addresses within their assignment range (and "public" to boot) would be too much of a coincidence for Hamachi not to be involved. 2. If your computers are set to automatically get TCP/IP parameters upon boot, they broadcast a DHCP request onto your local area network. (Normally these broadcast requests will not pass through the router.) Your computer is going to accept TCP/IP configuration parameters from the first DHCP server to respond. Normally, the closest one responds first (because, well - it's closer). 3. Your IP addresses are "apparently" being assigned by a DHCP server located at IP address "5.0.0.1". This address and the one offered to your computer for use are within the range of "virtual" IP addresses Hamachi uses to establish their Virtual Private Networks (usually used to set up a logical LAN across public network, e.g. Internet). I don't know if that DHCP server is on your local area network (behind the home router) or across the Internet (through a VPN link you've setup?). 4. I wouldn't expect your computer to boot directly into a VPN connection. a. What do you use Hamachi for? b. Do you have a Hamachi "client" program scheduled to run at system startup? c. Do you have multiple network connections defined? d. Is one of them set as the "default"? Big caveat here - I've never used a VPN or Hamachi software... 5. Simplify the problem domain you're working with to "isolate" the origin of the "5.0.0.1" DHCP server. a. Ensure DHCP server function within router is enabled to assign addresses in a range known to you. b. Disconnect cable from WAN side connection of router, so you cannot reach an external DHCP server (off your local area network). c. Reboot one of your computers. d. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router? (An IP address of 169.254.x.x means no DHCP server responded.) ----- e. Disconnect or shutdown all of the computers connected to the LAN side of router (both wired and wireless) except for one to eliminate possibility they are hosting 5.0.0.1 DHCP server. (Preferably keep computer hard-wired to router.) f. On the lone computer, use "ipconfig /release" or "ipconfig /release *" to release the lease for its current IP address. g. Then try an "ipconfig /renew" to get a new address. h. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router? i. If not, release the IP address again. j. Reboot the lone computer. k. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router? ------ l. Try a different computer? 4. I wouldn't expect your computer to boot directly into a VPN connection. a. What do you use Hamachi for? My BROTHER and I, we use hamachi as a social network in which we can see who is online and set up virtual "LAN" games with each other. This saves us a lot of trouble of always having to configure our firewall and it helps improve connection speed. b. Do you have a Hamachi "client" program scheduled to run at system startup? Yes, When you install Hamachi it comes with software/client with a Static LAN 5.xxx.xxx.xx IP addresses. That address is how your friends find you and how they can connect to you. When you start your computer that client comes up and the application starts. If a computer does not have hamachi installed there is no secondary network connection setup as a virtual connection ( see image below) This has never affected every computer or any computer on the network before because it has its own settings configured and the real ethernet card is assigned to get settings from the router. c. Do you have multiple network connections defined? All computers are set to connect to 1 network. MyHomeNet through the routers IP address of 192.168.1.80.(sharing files and printing There is no other network configured) d. Is one of them set as the "default"? The default connection is Local Area Network 1. Which is the real Ethernet card, its job is to get its settings from the router. Big caveat here - I've never used a VPN or Hamachi software... See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamachi for more information, the picture on the right is the software/client that a user gets. The white empty field would be your network and your friends with there hamachi ip addresses. Official website: https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi2/ 5. Simplify the problem domain you're working with to "isolate" the origin of the "5.0.0.1" DHCP server. a. Ensure DHCP server function within router is enabled to assign addresses in a range known to you. I checked and there is Public LAN and private LAN, public is disabled and private is enabled. The screenshot above the (white one) Shows the settings that should be assigning to all computers. b. Disconnect cable from WAN side connection of router, so you cannot reach an external DHCP server (off your local area network). c. Reboot one of your computers. Ok, I did test it with a computer with and without hamachi and I am getting a disconnect message and unable to connect message. I replugged in the cable and it gave me a hamachi IP address d. (Preferably keep computer hard-wired to router.) I shut down all my computers and started them up one at a time. They are still recieving the hamachi LAN DCHP settings, even though the computer itself does NOT have hamachi installed. f. On the lone computer, use "ipconfig /release" or "ipconfig /release *" to release the lease for its current IP address. I did that and use repair and it is still assigning me that IP address. g. Then try an "ipconfig /renew" to get a new address. h. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router? i. If not, release the IP address again. j. Reboot the lone computer. k. Are you now getting your TCP/IP configuration parameters from the router? I think the router is assigning me this IP still because all the computers were off and I turned one on without hamachi and still got a Hamachi LAN network. ------ l. Try a different computer? It is wierd because this started happening out of nowhere,(last week) I can not seem to isolate the problem. I rotate between every computer and they are all being assigned that IP address with or without hamachi. No one has access to the router but me and I check the logs and no one but myself has signed in and no configurations seem to have been altered.. The screen shot below is the hamachi LAN settings. the settings are the same for all computers with Hamachi[ the IP is different but the DNS settings and stuff are all the same. Computers without hamachi are getting hamachi settings.. The screenshots above was from a computer without hamachi installed. [Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]1. Safe Mode. Boot up one of your computers (Windows XP Pro if you have it) into "Safe Mode". This should boot a minimal configuration of "services" and "drivers" (hopefully without starting any VPN components). a. Does this computer currently have Hamachi client on it? b. Did it ever have the Hamachi client on it? c. What IP address was assigned (5.x.x.x or 192.168.1.x)? d. What does the routing table look like? (1) To display table use "route print" without quotes from Command Prompt window. "route print > output.txt" will direct command output into file "output.txt" if you wish to "post" it. (2) Any 5.x.x.x or 192.168.1.x entries? One or the other or both? 2. Safe Mode with Networking. Now try booting the computer into "Safe Mode with Networking". Any changes. 3. Normal Mode. Now boot the computer into "Normal" mode. Look at the IP address and routing table. Any changes. 4. Disconnect WAN Cable. Earlier when you disconnected WAN cable to ISP and booted up a computer (one with Hamachi, one without); you said: Quote I am getting a disconnect message and unable to connect message. I replugged in the cable and it gave me a hamachi IP address. If you hadn't reconnected the cable, would you have gotten an IP address assigned (169.254.x.x, 192.168.1.x, or 5.x.x.x)?Im officially annoyed, I have been trying to figure out here this 5.xx is coming from and frankly I think the router is broadcasting ti when it should not be!! Anyways, I switched from LAN to WAN and I got 169.xx.xxx.xxx Ip addresses. I could not get on the internet or anything but at least when I restarted the computers I got the WAN Ip address. This is so fustrating.. I think I might just go get a new DSL modem and HOPE this all goes away. I flashed the router 2x and I even reset to factory default and dispite testing it on 7 COMPUTERS! it is 80/20 80% of getting 5.xx.xxx IP address and 20 of actual getting the right IP address! Now when I turn off the router and back on not all of them will even get the right IP address! Most will get the right settings but some will get the 5.166.xxx.xx IP address! If this is happen on 7 computers I know its not the computers that are causing the problem especially since I tested 1 computer at a time. 3x ethernet cable and 4x wireless.1. Router. While it might not be configured correctly, I believe the router itself is OK (functioning as designed). It is not generating the "5.x.x.x" IP addresses. I think you want router configured as a "Private LAN". Earlier I asked you to disconnect WAN cable and reboot a computer. (I hoped to see what TCP/IP configuration it would assign if unable to reach WAN.) You replied:Quote I did test it with a computer with and without hamachi and I am getting a disconnect message and unable to connect message. I replugged in the cable and it gave me a hamachi IP address What IP address does it assign when WAN is disconnected? I would expect either "169.254.x.x" or "192.168.1.x". If it's not an Hamachi computer, it shouldn't even be trying to access the WAN (unless you have startup configured to access WAN - in which case you should boot to "Safe Mode".) I think it's either getting the "5.x.x.x" from Hamachi on WAN or an Hamachi configuration file left on the computer. 2. 169.254.x.x Address(es). These are Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) values assigned by the Windows operating system when it is unable to acquire one from a DHCP server. They are not assigned by your ISP or router (DHCP server) and they are not routable (hence no Internet access). See Link-local IPv4 addresses. 3. Routing Tables. Look at the routing tables on both the router and your computers. It would be interesting to see whether the computer's routing table contains entries for an assigned "192.168.1.x" address. Also take note of any "persistent" routes (which persist through reboots until manually deleted). From command prompt enter "route print". COMPARE routing tables of Hamachi computer (5.x.x.x) and non-Hamachi computer (192.168.1.x). 4. Reference(s): a. Hamachi Community Forums b. Hamachi:Gaming c. Hamachi is good news for SOHOs, but not so good for the enterpriseI finally found the computer causing this entire issue!! I disconnected every computer from my router one at a time until to see if one of the computer was causing all this problem and I found it! It was my [emailprotected]/storage/backup computer: Intel Pentium 4 1.8Ghz 1 GB DDR 2700 2 x 320 GB HD 1 x 20 GB Maxtor drive 2 x 10/100/1000 MBPS PCI 1 x integrated intel 10/100Mbps It has 3 Ethernet ports for a total of 3,100 Mbps (theoretic transfer) Unplugging every computer in the house worked! The problem was all these computers are workstation computers, those who are connected to the router via Ethernet cable would still be on. If the computer is shut off the Ethernet cards would still be active/communicating with the router. I will switch it so they shut off when the computer shuts off. This computer was originally used as LAN networking computer and it has all sorts of VPN software installed, I decided to check this computer because it has 3 Ethernet cards 2 PCI and one internal. I had to disconnect all the cables in order for it not to broad cast. If one of them is plugged in it will start giving out the 5.xxx.xxx IP address again. it did have hamachi installed, however it was using v1.1x and it was never fully configured. I un-install it and any vpn software that is left behind to be on the safe side. I guess that storm which caused the entire house to lose power somehow messed up the settings on that computer.. I opened it up while servicing and thank goodness I did. I guess that computer was crying for help. The HD was getting hot 50 Celsius one of the fans stopped working. The CPU was getting clogged. I will service it and put it up soon. Unfortunately this computer has no monitor so I had to go move one of my desktop monitors to it.. I guess I should go work on it. The virus definitions and software are 5 months outdated and I did not install any windows update on it. At least its not broadcasting 5.xx.xxx.xx anymore. Now it is giving me other issues, but I can fix those slowly. Anyways I'm glad its not the router it was driving me insane!Okay. Nice work! |
