Solve : Home Network struggle?

Answer»

ok guys, i've searched and read and i still can't get it. Here's the info:

Comp 1: Pentuim 4 xp pro service pack 3
Comp 2: E machine celeron xp pro
Router: Linksys Etherfast cable/dsl router

I have my ethernet cable from comp 1(main computer) plugged into the internet port on the router.

I have a 50ft ethernet cable from port1 on the router to comp2.

the router recognizes that port1 is plugged into comp2(green light lit up on router)

the router recognizes comp1 is hooked up to the internet port on the router(green light lit up)

From there i have ran home network wizard and set up a LAN connection

Also i have ran Network Magic program and it says it cannot detect my router.

so being a rookie, i want to stop and get the correct advice from you guys. You have helped me in the past and i have always had success.

Note: The main reason for this network is so that i can play multiplayer games with my son. I DO NOT NEED TO HAVE COMP2 INTERNET CAPABLE. Thanks!!!!! The cables are not "cross- cables"The Internet port on your router should have your cable\dsl modem plugged into it

The 4 open PORTS that are left should have the computers plugged into them....

For EXAMPLE....computer 1 plugged into port one and computer 2 plugged into port 2 on the router.....

So your saying that if i dont need the internet connection i dont need to plug anything into the internet port on the modem? And if i do have to have an internet connection, i assume that i would have to find a cord with a regular telephone line plug on one end and and ethernet plug on the other? (my reasoning is , my modem is built in, i have dial- up, so all i have on my mdem port is a phone jack and a "line" jack)I'm stilll waiting for someone's help please1. Dial-Up ISP Connection. What kind of "dial-up" service do you have, regular or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL)? The later is hi-speed Internet.

If you have regular "dial-up" (which is not DSL), then the incoming line attaches to the "line" port of the regular modem and "phone" as you've previously stated.

2. Linksys Router. The Internet (WAN) port of the Linksys router is used for a DSL/Cable ISP connection. It CONNECTS via an ethernet cable to either a DSL or Cable modem. If you don't have a DSL/Cable connection, you're not going to use it.

You're just going to use the "switch" component of the home router which is just the four local area network (LAN) ports. You shouldn't have to configure anything on the Linksys router to use it as a switch.

As previously stated by "Spoiler", you just cable each computer to one of the LAN ports. You use a normal ("straight" not "crossover") ethernet cable to do this.

3. File and Printer Sharing. Not sure, but I think you have to enable "File and Printer Sharing" on both computers to "game" across the LAN. Or do the games have their own client/server software built-in? The "games" should have some setup instructions for LAN play. (Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

4. Reference(s):
a. Home Network, Wireless Network and Computer Networking Made Easy
B. Windows XP: Networking your home or small business

c. File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows
d. Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP
1. File and Printer Sharing. Well, now I'm THINKING you don't need "File and Printer Sharing" enabled for multiplayer gaming across the LAN. It would probably be best if you have this "disabled" on the computer you use for an Internet connection (dial-up). When enabled, it gives users from the Internet easier access to your files.

2. Firewall(s). While disconnected from the Internet and troubleshooting your multiplayer game setup you can disable the software firewall on the computers, if any. Get your multiplayer game configuration working first, then worry about which programs, protocols, and/or ports the firewall needs to permit through.

This might also apply to any Security Suite Software you may have installed. Thanks so much for the help folks....have a great day!!!

You need to START your own thread.Flush DNS cache:
In Microsoft Windows, you can use the command ipconfig /flushdns to flush the DNS resolver cache. Open the command prompt and type the following:

C:\>ipconfig /flushdns

Solve : internet page load hang-up : stop/start page load ok?

Answer»

I open a web page - it starts to load - it stops downloading - I click on the stop button - click on the address bar and hit enter - the page downloads quite quickly.

Consistent problem. First try the page won't load. Second try, or THIRD, it loads quickly.

Any suggestions?

OS = Win2k.
Browser = Firefox.
Broadband = 512/256 shaped.
Speedtest = OK.

many thanksTry IE. Same thing?Common scenario is where I do a search using Google. Then I look down the page of results and rapidly center click all that might be useful (so they open in a new tab and I don't loose my original search). Maybe I center click about 5 results. I would expect this to cause some slowness since I am asking for multiple pages - naturally. However, instead of slow I get nothing unless I go back and do stop/start. Even if I go away and do my washing and come back 2 hours later - nothing. Then I reload and bingo, up she comes.

The above procedure used to work fine when I first got broadband. Now it is getting gradually worse. Could it be that every web page now has a large volume of advertising attached to it at the front, so the adverts have to be downloaded first and maybe they are big files?

I can't REPLICATE this with IE because center click is not functional (at least not in the IE 6 that I am using).Center click - is that the middle button of a three button mouse (or the scroll wheel)?it's the scroll wheel - click on a link with the scroll wheel and the link opens in a new tab

if the tab is no use to you - click the tab with the scroll wheel and it is closed

saves a lot of time by KEEPING the first page open while you look at the second page1. Sounds normal to me (of course I'm on a very old slow computer). If you have an old computer (slow and not much memory), running a software firewall, real-time antivirus, real-time anti-malware, browser blocking blacklisted sites, or add-ons dynamically checking links against some online list; it's going to take some time. I wonder WHETHER one end or other of the link "times out" waiting for the page request to complete.

I assume the second time you request the page, most of the domain names have already been resolved to their IPv4 (or IPv6) addresses, and much of the page has already been downloaded to your browser cache. So you're pretty much good to go.

I'm not a web programmer, nor do I run a web site; so this is all conjecture on my part...

2. Try repeating your experiment after booting to "Safe Mode with Networking" if Windows 2000 supports that. That should leave you with a relatively clean system (no or very little security software running). You might also invoke Firefox in its own safe mode (all add-ons disabled). How does it perform on your end without the extra hoops to jump through ?

If you're behind a "home router" with a firmware firewall component, you should be protected from port scanners.

3. How modern and fast is your computer? (Just CURIOUS. I don't think I can solve your problem.)
a. CPU (and clock speed)
b. System RAM (MB or GB)

4. I wonder if your ISP runs a "proxy server" and is caching the pages you requested before passing them on to you. You may be waiting on them for the first retrieval of the data. (Or waiting on their DNS servers to resolve the domain names.)

Solve : What exactly does an ISP do??

Answer»

Hi, as I understand it an Internet Service Provider simply provides access to the internet for consumers/businesses. They don't host websites themselves or facilitate the hosting of websites do they? This is DONE by separate entities right?

ThanksExcellent question... I've always wondered not "what" they do, but "how" they provide access, so I'm afraid I can't answer your question. Best I can do is point you to where I always start when looking for answers: "Wikipedia".

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Service_Provider.Whether it's cable, DSL, or dial up, an ISP connects users to a central point where it is connected to a very high speed, generally commercial only, internet service back bone.

Some ISP's do provide content but most don't have very much content.

An ISP can be huge like Comcast or Quest, or it can be a small rural operation servicing only a handful of customers.Quote

Many do.Many do an excellent job of overcharging for their services. Quote from: jarv on February 07, 2010, 09:51:38 PM

Some will offer "PERSONAL" webspace, MEANING they allow you some space on a web server for a personal WEBSITE. They usually do not offer web hosting for business-oriented websites. When creating a personal website or web page, usually done using an ISP provided online web page editor, the URL to your web page will probably something like http://soybean/embarqspace.com or http://www.embarqspace.com/soybean/index.htm, where embarq is the ISP.

But, if you want your own domain name such as www.mysite.com, then you usually need to look elsewhere for a hosting service. And, you need to register your domain name so that you can truly have your own URL, not a web address tacked onto your ISP's domain.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Service_Provider.
As stated in that article, the main services of an ISP are Internet access and email. Aegis, totally right.
Here's an example:
zomg
120 euros a month for 100 MBPS down and 5 Mbps up.. rofl.
It's weird you still don't know what an ISP does? It connects you to the Internet to view web pages, download files, chat, and post stuff online.Quote

Solve : Wireless USB modem --> getting online problem?

Answer»

Do a system restore back to the point before you INSTALLED the USB modems and REINSTALL the drivers for the modems... try connecting again..

If this doesn't work, go ask the owner of the router if he KNOWS of anyone else having the same problem connecting to the router...

EDIT: when I say system restore I mean, the point before the modems failed..

Solve : Tracing back an IP (the HTTP protocol fundamentals)?

Answer»
Hi.

I've heard that you can always trace back an IP no MATTER what, because of the HTTP protocol. I don't understand how that's possible. Could someone explain it to me?

Examples

1) If you are talking to someone on MSN, how can you get his IP without sending a file to him or having him visit an url which logs his IP? He's connected to the MSN server, so I don't get it.

2) Someone tries to ping you, but your router is set so that no one can?

Now, I'm not a networking novice (I've STUDIED both datacommunication, networking, TCP/IP and assistant-networking, so that covers a lot, HOWEVER I forgot most of it) but still some people claim that an IP is tracable no matter what.
If this is true, then BANKS would be hacked so fast, no?
What about the following scenario:

IP culprit -> proxy -> proxy -> 100.000 PC botnet -> proxy -> public network -> IP tracer

How in the world could IP tracer possibly find the IP of IP culprit?
Is it a matter of time/skill/tools? I've had the Federal POLICE come to my college and explain
how nearly impossible it is to trace down guys like this.
Not to mention that jurisdiction spans over several countries when the botnets are spread out all over
the world.. it's almost mission impossible and 99% of the cases they don't bother anymore.

What about:

IP culprit -> router -> public network -> router -> IP tracer

How can tracer find out culprit's IP if culprit's router is set to forbid ping/tracing?
What if he is behind a proxy that doesn't allow tracer to do any form of tracing?

I just don't get how you can always get someone's IP, supposedly because the HTTP protocol always allows it. I don't get it. lol

Someone care to explain?

Thank you.

Seems like my question is too hard.

Solve : how to block sites?

Answer»

i want to block some websits without any softwares pls help meYou want to block SITES. Without any software. Not gonna happen. Your operating system itself is indeed, a software.1. I'm generally opposed to "censorship"... Having said that, I'm not sure what your network environment is, what you want to do, and why you want to do it "without any softwares".

2. Network Environment:
a. Is this a personal home network or a business network?
b. Is there a home router or hardware firewall protecting the network from unsolicited internet access?
c. Does the network contain more than one computer?
d. What operating system(s) do the computers use?

3. Block what?
a. Are you trying to block communication to/from internet websites?
b. For all the computers on your network or just selected computers?
c. For all user accounts on the computer or just selected user accounts?
d. Just on certain days of the week or every day?
e. Twenty-four hours a day or just certain hours of the day?

4. What does "without any softwares" mean?
a. You don't want to purchase additional software to "block" websites?
b. You don't want to install additional software to "block" websites?
c. You don't want to edit existing software or settings within the operating system to "block" websites?
d. You don't want anyone to know you "block" websites? You can get a hardware firewall, if you don't want to install blocking software on CLIENT PCs connected to a network. You can buy a dedicated hardware device or -- much cheaper -- there are numerous* specialist Linux live CD distros which can turn an old PC with just a cd-ROM or pen drive and 1 or 2 network cards into such a device.

* IpCop is a well known one, but a web search will find PLENTY of others.

http://www.ehow.com/how_2238896_block-websites-easily-free.htmlThere is one way to block some content of websites you didn't want to open. You have to configure the Content Advisory of your Internet Browser. Click the link below to help you how to do it. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/using/howto/security/contentadv/config.mspxJeez.. it's kinda easy.

1) Block them on your router
2) Add them to the HOSTS file
in my office they using proxy so host trick not going help me. then i dnt want to install 3rd party software. In Windows XP

1. Click Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt.
2. Click Command Prompt This will open a DOS command window.
3. Type: notepad C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc/hosts
4. Locate the line 127.0.0.1 localhost
5. To block the website google.com for example, just add this text under 127.0.0.1 localhost:

127.0.0.1 google.com
127.0.0.1 www.google.com

You can add as many sites any site, However you will need to prefix it with "127.0.0.1".

6. Save the file
Google will now be blocked in all web browser. This is an advanced but easy method on how to blow a website.

without a third party Software.

Solve : Nertwork cable unplug?

Answer»

Operating system WINDOWS XP with two network cards, one is disabled, the other is hardwired to a linksys wireless router. I RECENTLY had to rearrange my office and needed a longer cable to connect my computer to the router. When I plugged in the new cable to the NIC card and router I get the network cable unplugged. Check the connection and they are fine, plugged network cable into another computer on the network and that was fine. Is it possible that the other NIC card is interfering with the other NIC card Ran a check in device manager and both NIC cards when enabled are WORKING fine. So any suggestion would help. Why do you have two NIC cards installed? If it worked before I doubt that's a problem, but it would be simple enough to make sure. Just pull out the disabled card.

Just eliminate potential problems one at a time.I thought the first one went bad at the connections because I got the same message that a cable was unplugged. so when I installed the new NIC it worked fine. And it has worked fine until I had to replace the cable to a longer one then I get the message Cable unplugged.1. I'm with "rthompson80819". Remove the extra network card. Probably won't solve the problem, but it simplifies your configuration.

If you open up the machine (use a grounding wrist strap - see ElectroStatic Discharge or ESD), do it this way:
a. Shutdown, power off, and unplug power cord from computer (to ensure no standby voltage to motherboard). Actually the ESD link recommends you remove all cords from the back of the computer. At least turn the monitor power off.
b. Remove both network cards.
c. Connect power and reboot all the way into the operating system (this should remove both cards from your software configuration).
d. Shutdown, power off, unplug power cord.
e. Insert one network card.
f. Connect power and reboot. System will rediscover card and assign driver from its database.

Maybe you'll get LUCKY...

2. What version and service pack level of Windows XP?

To check: Start -> right-click My_Computer -> Properties -> General tab.

3. Can you provide the "exact" message string for "Cable unplugged" and where and when it appears. Perhaps someone with time on their hands can survey the Internet for cause/solution...

4. What's the product name/number for the network card you want to use? Usually they have "status" LEDs on the back that show whether they have physical connectivity and activity. What do your status LEDs SAY?

5. Linksys Router.
a. What is the model number of Linksys router? Sound be on the bottom...
b. What is LAN status (LED) for port Windows XP computer connects to?

Solve : question on traceroute?

Answer»

hey folks ,

I've tried traceroutes (http://www.traceroute.org/) and I keep getting lots of asterisks...

Does this mean that those "trace-servers" that I chose do not reach me?

why is that?1. Tracert Asterisk(s). The "asterisk" indicates a "REQUEST timed out". EITHER a FIREWALL is BLOCKING the request (and/or RESPONSE) or the site is unreachable (a link failure).

The link you gave is for a remote site to attempt "traceroute" to you. Normally you would request "tracert" to them. I guess you could compare the two outputs to see where the "problem" lies.

Windows operating system(s) uses "tracert" or "pathping". Unix-like operating systems use "traceroute".

Solve : Connecting XP Machine to Home Network trouble?

Answer»

Server is called server because it will act as a print server for other computers. It will also have FILES stored on it that other computers can access. It is not a network server in the traditional sense.1. What's your objective (for the new computer)?
a. See and access the "shared" files and printers of the network (client)?
b. Share some of its files and printers with the network (server)?

2. Workgroup Name.
a. Is the "new" computer a member of a "Domain" or "Workgroup"?
b. If workgroup, does it use the same "workgroup" name as the others?

To check: Start -> right-click My_Computer -> select Properties -> select Computer_Name tab.

3. Loosely transcribed from reference "Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP". (Start with guest account subsection "h".)
Quote

Verify Server Computer Configuration

When troubleshooting the server computer, you need to verify the following:
a. That the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled on the network connection connected to your home or small office network.

b. That file sharing is enabled.

c. That the Server service is running. If it is not, check the system event log for errors and information about why the Server service did not start.

d. That the server computer is sharing the desired folder or printer.

e. That if the server computer has ICF enabled on the network connection attached to the home or small office network, then service definitions are defined to allow incoming file and printer sharing traffic.

f. That if the server computer has Windows Firewall enabled, then the File and Printer Sharing exception from the Exceptions tab of the Windows Firewall Control Panel applet is enabled.

g. That the server computer is not using TCP/IP filtering, which might be preventing response messages from the client computer.

h. That the guest account is active for network connections. In User Accounts (available from Control Panel-User Accounts) the Guest account is off by default. However this setting only applies to the ability to log on the local computer using the Guest account. Simple file sharing relies on guest access to shared folders and printers. To verify that the Guest account is active for network access, do the following:
(1) Log on to Windows XP with an administrator account.
(2) Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
(3) In the Command Prompt window, type net user guest, and then press ENTER.
(4) If the account is active, a line appears in the output of the command that states Account active Yes.
(5) If the account is not active, type net user guest /active:yes and then press ENTER.
(6) Type exit and press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.

a. See and access the "shared" files and printers of the network (client)?
b. Share some of its files and printers with the network (server)?

Answer to 1 is b.

2. Workgroup Name.
a. Is the "new" computer a member of a "Domain" or "Workgroup"?
b. If workgroup, does it use the same "workgroup" name as the others?

Answer to 2. a. Workgroup
Answer to 2. b. same "workgroup"

Server Computer Configuration a - g is set correctly.

Checking on h. now.

net user guest command reveals "Account Active Yes"1. Observations. You shouldn't have to do anything "special" to add the "new" computer to your network. It should see the other computers and be seen both by IPv4 address and hostname. You shouldn't have to resort to "static" address assignments or use of the "hosts" file.

It's best to troubleshoot networking issues using a minimum configuration. Once it's working, add additional components desired one-by-one to see which, if any, "break" the networking. These additional components might be optional network protocols, firewalls, antivirus/malware software, and/or security software suites.

2. Question(s):
a. Is the "new" computer configured for "simple file sharing"? To determine: right-click Start (button) -> Explore -> Tools pull-down menu -> Folder Options... -> View tab -> Advanced settings subsection -> pull down scroll bar -> look for (last ENTRY) "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)".
b. What firewall(s) are installed on the "new" computer? Are they "disabled"?
c. What other security software is installed on the "new" computer?

3. Recommendation. Start over with your troubleshooting efforts by restricting the scope to just two computers, the router, and restoring their network configurations to a known state.
a. Use the "new" computer and one of the other "Windows XP SP3" computers.

b. For both computers, remove all of the static IPv4 address entries you added to the "hosts" file. Only entry I would keep is "127.0.0.1 localhost". File located at "%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc".

c. Reconfigure DHCP server of router to "automatically" assign IPv4 addresses from a "pool". This is to reduce the chance of "operator" error/misconfiguration.

If you need DNS addresses try OpenDNS "208.67.222.222", 208.67.220.220"; or Verizon "4.2.2.6", "4.2.2.5"; otherwise just let router pick up the DNS server addresses from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

d. For the "new" computer, reset the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from a command prompt. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/299357.
(1) To open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER:
cmd
(2). At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER:
NETSH int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Note If you do not want to specify a directory path for the log file, use the following command:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
(3). Reboot the computer.

e. For the "new" computer, verify it is configured for "simple file sharing".

To check: right-click Start (button) -> Explore -> Tools pull-down menu -> Folder Options... -> View tab -> Advanced settings subsection -> pull down scroll bar -> look for (last entry) "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)".

f. For the "new" computer, ensure "File and Printer Sharing" is enabled. See File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows.

g. For the Local Area Connection (LAN) of both computers ensure the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties (General tab) window is configured to:
(1) Obtain an IP address automatically
(2) Obtain DNS server address automatically

To check: Start -> Control_Panel -> double-click Network_Connections -> double-click Local Area Connection -> General tab -> Properties button -> General tab -> select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties button -> General tab.

h. For the "new" computer, ensure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is set to "Default" and not "Disabled".

To check: Start -> Control_Panel -> double-click Network_Connections -> double-click Local Area Connection -> General tab -> Properties button -> General tab -> select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties button -> General tab -> Advanced button -> WINS tab -> NetBIOS subsection.

i. Reboot both computers.

4. Basic test algorithm.
a. From command prompt on both computers, run "ipconfig /all" to verify TCP/IP configuration.
b. Ensure each computer can successfully ping the other both by IPv4 address and hostname.
c. Ensure each computer can access the other both by IPv4 address and hostname. Use Start -> Run -> "\\" and "\\" without the quotes where you substitute the other computer's address and hostname in place of "" or "".

5. Reference(s):
a. Diagnose And Repair SOHO networks----------------
1. Observations. You shouldn't have to do anything "special" to add the "new" computer to your network. It should see the other computers and be seen both by IPv4 address and hostname. You shouldn't have to resort to "static" address assignments or use of the "hosts" file.
----------------

I agree I shouldn't have to do this. However, simply adding the new machine DID NOT WORK!

ALL FIREWALLS ARE OFF! Unless there is a hidden firewall I don't know about they are all off. Is there a way to detect HIDDEN firewalls? That would be helpful.

As far as adding a machine one at a time. I have already done that! Simple sharing is on, and has been on. EVERYTHING works on this network but the new machine. The new machine has the same WORKGROUP as the other machines and simple sharing is ON. NetBios over TCP/IP is set to default. At one point I put it to ON to see if that made a difference. It didn't !

Before I asked for help in this forum I shut everything down but the new machine and one of the XP machines. No luck. Tried to find it with the other XP machine. no luck. Tried it with the WIndows 7 machine. no luck. Can ping by IP address for it on any of the machines and vice versa, but cannot ping by name.

If I add other computers to the network I get better results. Windows 7 is able to locate the computer IF other computers are on the network and I refresh. However, I cannot access anything on the new computer. None of the XP machines can locate the new computer.

The hosts files have allowed me to ping by name and by IP address from ANY computer to ANY other computer. To me that is some progress, but OBVIOUSLY useless from a usable network standpoint.

I know no one gets paid for the advice offered here, but I'm starting to get repeated advice, just in different ways.

This machine not working on the network does not make sense to me, and it doesn't seem to make sense to people here either, so the advice is to start over because this shouldn't be happening.

I'm hoping I can isolate what the problem is. I'm beginning to think it's hardware related. Please read below to see if this helps to determine where the problem is.

NEW INFORMATION

Being frustrated over this whole thing I downloaded Cisco's Network Magic Pro (NMP) and installed it on the new computer. NMP immediately wants to connect to the router. For some reason it cannot find the router from the new XP machine. I also installed NMP on the Windows 7 machine. NMP found the router and mapped my network for me. It found the new computer, but listed it as a device. I changed it to a computer in NMP and it remapped the network. It found the new computer and recognized that it had Windows XP with SP3. However it said that NMP was NOT installed on the new computer. That might be because NMP never found the router on the new XP machine.

I can't figure why NMP is unsuccessful at finding the router. ipconfig gives the correct IP address, which is what NMP seems to be looking for. I have tried all the router plugs and switched cables etc. It makes no difference.

I AM tempted to try one part of starting over. Is it possible to uninstall the network software on the new machine and reinstall it clean--like it was never on the machine before?

I'm wondering if something is corrupted somehow.

Anyway I appreciate all the help.

That is the state I am in at this point.

Hi all, I am currently with AOL and have been since 1998. I am LOOKING for a new ISP, I live in England and BT is my telephone provider. Two questions.....1 should I leave AOL? - am suddenly having internet connection problems to secure sites and sadly AOL staff unhelpful and give me contradictory information and fixes, 2 - who should I pick as their replacement? Any advice, opinions experiences welcomed. Thanks, ElaineI think know I'd DROP AOL and INQUIRE about broadband (probably DSL) with BT. I'm not in the UK but I found this: BT Total BroadbandYou may have a cable provider too. Check around and compare prices and speeds.http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/broadband

I have been very happy with sky if you have sky TV you GET 2mb for free, I have just upgraded to 20 mb for £10 a month with 6 months free.

Solve : Wi-Fi network on camping, hotel or between cars.?

Answer»

Hi, I am normal laptop user. Please tell me if it is possible to do it with my laptop:
I travel a bit via hotels or with my adventure truck. I do go to places for exploration, treasure hunting, bunkers, gold searching and so. I usually stay on camping place or hotel. Often there is no body to go with for adventure so I am looking for means to communicate to my neighbors and organize more tracks or campervans for expedition.
It is not easy after sunset if on the camping field is over hundred vehicles and I would like to communicate with local people only. I notice that my laptop Wifi recognizes many PC to PC Wifi connections from the camping or hotel.
Is any way that via this connection I can send messages around to other computers about myself and my plans for next morning adventure?
May be it is possible to attract attention of surrounding PC users to access some kind of my personal Web page located in my laptop?
If it is impossible would You know how to approach MS to consider implementing such option in next Windows OS ?
Regards,
Wam.
What you're describing and what you want to do is create an "ad-hoc" network. I don't have any experience setting up ad hoc networks, but in an ad hoc network, once connected, everyone in the group can access files and folders on eachother's computers and no routers are required. One computer with an Internet connection (say you were using a mobile Internet service with a USB adapter) can even act as an "access point" by which all other computers in the Ad Hoc group can connect to the Internet, aside from file sharing. One person could create a text document and share it with the group. Of course, configuration will vary, depending on which Windows Operating SYSTEMS the users in the Ad Hoc group are using.. You will also be limited by the range of the wireless standard being used...In other words, if each user in the group is too far apart, ad hoc won't work... For example, wireless/n and wireless/g standards have a maximum distance of 300 FEET, approx..

What operating systems will other users in your group be using?

Hi,
I was told that wifi DS Nintendo users can see any Nintendo station
with in wifi range and they can send messages to each other – like invitation to game or chatting. I am wondering if similar software for handling wifi for windows is possible.
If my PC is listed in available wifi networks could I temper with my PC name in such way that it will be seen as invitation message to chat or files shearing? I mean can I use my visible PC name as limited message board or within windows my visible PC name could be extended and how to do it or how can I quickly edit my PC name (I am using WXP sp2) ?
The ideal would by if there is some software for Windows which could send message to other local PCs and this info will pop up on desktop via MS messenger software or so – just ideas how to adopt existing system for this task.
Regards,
Wam.
As I said, I've NEVER set up an Ad-Hoc network so I'm not totally sure how you would accomplish what you are asking... Before you utilize any type of Ad Hoc application like (and I don't know which ones exist) it makes sense to first set up the connectivity between the computers in the Ad Hoc group. Once you get that whale figured out, then move on to adding/using Ad Hoc messenger applications...

Here are some articles to get you started..

Setting up Ad Hoc on Winodws XP

Sharing a Windows XP Ad Hoc Internet connection

I just check my laptop and it made for me list of active PC near by.
Even secure networks came with the network name string like “Gram” so if I can see that string it means that they can see my PC network name and we even did not log in. If they will refresh networks in range they can notice that I have change my PC name from “waclaw” in to “ Hi, how y Gram, lets talk?”.
I have noticed that all arrivals in camping firstly LOOK for available networks HOPING for some internet access. I can use that practice for posting my message.
I only need some easy and quick way to rename my PC network.
How to do it ?

Solve : wifi- not working anymore?

Answer»

Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 5610z and RIGHT now it has windows xp and ubuntu linux duel booted on it.

Well, on Thursday my wifi was working perfectly(4 or 5 bars running really fast) and now I can MAYBE connect to it for about a min with none or one bar. My wifi is provided by my university. The wifi I use disappears and reappears randomly. I have never had any trouble with the connection until now and it had always downloaded about 1 or 2 Mb per/sec.

What I have tried:
I have updated the drivers.
uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers.
System restore.

I have talked with some other students and they said theirs was perfectly fine, so there is something wrong with my computer. My wifi adapter is working because its able to connect to other wifi connections, but the connection is always very low or no signal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerly,

meYou said you uninstalled and re-installed the drivers. Are they the most up to date drivers? I'd find out the manufacturer of the wifi adapter, (Device Management) go to their website, then download and install the most recent drivers. If you can't connect directly from your Acer you MIGHT have to use a friends PC and save the files to a flash drive and then transfer to your PC. Try this first and let us know how it goes.

I'm sorry, I just re-read your post and seen that you have updated your drivers. Did you get them from the manufacturer's website? (not Acer's)Restart the computer and tap F8 until you see Advanced Boot Options... Select Safe Mode with Networking

When you get to the desktop, click START, click Control Panel, double-click on "network connections".. Right-click on the wireless adapter you see on the page and select "view available wireless networks"... Select the wirelss network on your campus and see if you can get a good signal and maintain connectivity...

If this works, then there's probably a service, program or virus on your computer that we need to appropriate...Or his WiFi adapter is going bad due to heat from other components. Only saying this because it used to have a good signal. And because i've read about Aspire's WiFi going bad due to heat.

I am hard wired into a cheap Belkin router. My MODEM and service state that I should get up to 10Mbps but am only getting AROUND 4 or 5. When I hard wire directly to modem, I do get GOOD speed. Can someone recommend a good router that can handle this speed for me?I've used Netgear routers for years and prefer them. Which is not to say that Linksys or other name-brand routers aren't as good.

Solve : Networking and Router Gateway?

We have multi-level situation. The XT on main has gateway with three sites and router setup. I am using vista on lower level.

The gateway and router sites have a very weak signal on lower level.

The Vista does not seem to have all the gateway "wizards" to setup and is giving a mental block.

Hopefully the bare bones explanation is clear.1. Bare bones... I can't tell whether they came from a "FISH" or a "moose"...

2. What is the basic "issue" you're trying to resolve?
a. Weak wireless signal?
b. Vista machine unable to access INTERNET?
c. Vista machine unable to access your local network?

3. Please clarify.
a. "Multi-level" in the sense your network components are on different floors of a home, business, or survival bunker?
b. XT? Did you mean Windows XP?
c. Three sites? As in three "computers"? Or three different "rooms"?
d. Do you have separate MODEM, gateway, and router devices? Are they all located in same room where internet enters the building?

Solve : Host lagging??

Answer»

Well, yeah, I'm the HOST of a HOME network, my parents and sister are connected to the router. Well, thing is, everytime my parents come home from work and watch movies online, I'd lag, a lot. As in, my ping would RANGE from 300~2000. But whenever no one watches movies or ANYTHING and does something else, my ping would go back to 30~50. I'm just wondering if this could be fixed, cause my parents would watch movies for hours, making me unable to play games.First, your parents shouldn't be watching movies online.

Second, no. They're using up your bandwidth streaming their movies. To reduce your ping, get a better INTERNET plan or tell them to buy the DVDs.They're not american movies, they're old chinese movies. And, thanks anyway I guess.Trade your parents for a different model

Solve : Error with sharing folder?

Answer»

I tried sharing a folder using sharing and SECURITY on 'Computer A' by right clicking the folder that I want to share and then CLICK sharing and security. When I reach a page where it is under a Sharing tab, I checked(or select) the "Share This Folder" option and set the permission for Everyone to "Full Control" and click apply and OK on both windows. When I go to 'Computer B' under "My Network Places" to access the folder that I have shared using 'Computer A', I couldn't gain access to it even though I have set full control. It displays:

\\(name)\\(folder I want to share) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network name cannot be found.Sorry I forgot to include the next sentence.

Can anyone tell me what is the problem? Help would be much appreciated.try only having ONE slash after the system name.

ok lets say I have two systems. Sys1 and Sys2.
Make a share on Sys2 named called data
On Sys1 click run and type the following:
\\Sys2\data

if your share is active and your are on the same WORKGROUP or domain you should connect to the remote system. Please let me know fi you have any questions. That method doesn't work mine was always single slash instead of double. Could the problem lies in the IP address, router or any physical networking equipment? One of the computer is using wireless connection and both are windows xp pro.ok what do you see if you go into your work group? Do you see the system listed? Can you ping the IP address of the other system?yup there's network that's why I'm finding out the problems to my question.ok can you ping the IP address of the remote system? Do you see the remote system listed in the network neighborhood I could ping my network everything is in working order except the folder which cannot be shared even when I have networkis this solved?!~

if not try disabling the firewall for both computernot yet solved stillGo to the properties of your network cards and make sure that file and printer sharing is checked.

I have a wifi connection to my home network but it will not connect automatically.

When I start my computer or wake it up from sleep mode I have to type my 10 number password to connect to the internet.

when I select my home network there is a option that says "connect automatically" I check it every time but it still will not connect automatically.

If anyone knows how to fix this PLEASE tell me.

Thanks for reading this. Can you let us know your full SYSTEM specs inc OS (windows XP, Vista) etc and how you are connecting to the internet, is it a router, modem? And are you connecting via cable or wireless?
As much info as you can provide please. Windows 7 laptop with a wireless connection to my home network's 2wire.
2wire... I'm ASSUMING you have AT&T DSL internet right? (If you live in the states) Can you give us the model number of the 2wire router? It's LOCATED somewhere directly on it. Also, can you tell us what security you're using? WEP, WPA-PSK, etc? Here please click this link for the video i made on this:

http://tinypic.com/r/amqn9i/6

The "connect automatically" box is checked already but my computer was not connected to the internet.Ok from the Video I see that Your model number is 2Wire071, and you're using WPA-PSK security. Unless thats is the name you gave the 2wire. I'll look it up.Yeah thats definitly not the model number. It's your SSID.The only computer I have with Wireless is Windows XP so I don't know if this is correct for Windows 7.
Go to Network Connections
Right Click on Wireless Network Connections
Select Properties
Click the Wireless Networks Tab
Under Preferred networks select your network
Click Properties
Click The Connection Tab
There should be a box to check "Connect when this network is in range"
Ok it is working now, had to enable a hidden folder so my computer would save my network.

Solve : VOIP conversations keep dropping?

Answer»

Quote

For example, if your router was using 300 Mbps Wireless Access (802.11/n standard)

just had to correct myself here... 802.11/n is 600 mbps, not 300 Update: her oovoo (VOIP program) disconnects randomly while she is away from the computer. lolHow come I can not modify new posts?

I also read about 'ATM loopback test'. Should I do this one on her router if things don't go well?

Anyway,

Update: I ASKED her and her house mate about the whole DSL thing, she said yes, it's DSL, phone and internet at the same time. Now to find out if it's router+modem at the same time.
She's going to plug it in the phone socket of her room today and she found an 'old LAN cable she used for her laptop'. This should work.
We'll see.EEVIAC!! IT WORKED!! She put her DSL line in the phone interface in her room and the whole splitter thing and put her LAN cable in the router then in her laptop and we don't have this problem anymore!!!
I'm so happy! Especially because I've asked about his problem to networking people so many times!

Me and my girlfriend would like to thank you a thousand times!!
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!

I'm so happy!
Happiest day ever!
If you have problems I will always check them out on the forum and do my best to help!

Many thank yous and cheers,
Treval

You're welcome, sir.

Now that we know it works with a cable, we've pretty much isolated the problem to the wireless environment. If she still wants to go wireless she can, but will have to make some assessments and tinker a little..

Hm. Our conversation last NIGHT (with cable! =)) lasted 41 minutes before the conversation on her end 'froze' and dropped. I hear her laptop harddisk do a lot of read actions. Rrrrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrrr. Dunno. Probably her problem. RAM or something. Also, oovoo on my side builds up endlessly on RAM for some reason. It goes up to 500+ MB (I have 2 GB DDR2 dual channel!) I THINK it's because I'm forcefully blocking every single (and there are a loooot of them) ad DOMAIN from every ad oovoo is trying to show me. I turned off the DNS caching service with HostsMan and this little neat program blocks all the adds. Oovoo's ads say "Don't want to see ads? Buy an oovoo plan". Rofl, I did it the smart way. Maybe oovoo can't deal with me blocking its hundreds of DOMAINS a second. Perhaps that's why the RAM builds up? Dunno.
Or perhaps it's just oovoo being memory-leaky.
Or! Perhaps some tiny connection problem occurred on her end. =P

Also, oovoo requires minimum 128 Kbps up/down, so we're fine. The connection bar is nice and green and all bars are maxed out so that means maximum connectivity.

Anyway the problem of connectivity is solved anyway. At least no dropouts. =P
I'm not too worried about the rest.

Solve : Windows RDP?

Answer»

I've never used Windows Remote Desktop protocol to connect to a computer across the Internet... Just out of curiosity what info. (ip address and/or port number if any)
WOULD you type in to make the initial connection, ASSUMING that the computer is behind a hardware firewall

Do you type the wide area address of the remote computer with a port extension?

Or a combination of the WAN address and the private IP address? Have you already read this?
Remote Desktop Connection: frequently asked questions
I couldn't find anything about routers, ports, or IP address in that tutorial that answers my question. However, I found some stuff here:

http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20051122_how_to_use_remote_desktop_connection_rdc.html

But I'm still confused... In this tutorial the guy says to type the private IP address of the computer you want to connect to along with the listening port... It just seems so weird... Say you type an address like 192.168.1.67:50001 IP address w/port number.. What does remote desktop do when you click connect? How does it actually find the router that you connect through, without you typing in the wide area address?

while I would do this. Get two computers side-by-side. Maybe your laptop and your desktop. Have them both looked up to your router with access to the Internet. Go through the procedure for both computers and at some point you will get an instant message or an e-mail to the effect that somebody wants to get in contact with you using remote desk top. Or something like that. So it you confirm and the message gets sent back some way. As Ira call, all you really need is the name of the computer. And the name of the local network. But in any CASE, one computer can communicate with another computer even without using IP addresses. The server already has traced a route and when you go to make connection the server already has that information and can find the other computer for you.
I'm not sure how it works, but the key thing is that has to be two computers and two people. One person sends a request in to some central server that forwards the request on to the e-mail or instant message of the other person's computer. Then the other person gives an acknowledgment and permission to go ahead and the message is sent back so that the server gets a full trace of who sent the message and who responded to the message. That's enough information for the server to take care of everything.
Besides the Microsoft remote desktop, there are other services available. Like a PC anywhere, or go to my PC. There's different things like that and trying to use a local IP addresses really kind of futile. Most networks now use some kind of DHCP. So from one data the next you might not know what your local address is anyway.
For security reasons you can't just make a connection using IP addresses. It's done through a form of authentication that uses a third-party.
Anyway, it works. And remarkably well.In the tutorial you read that says to type the (private) address & port #, it was probably talking about using rdp in a LAN setting. You on the other hand want to know how to do this in a WAN setting. So you would type the public address; no need for port # because rdp does that for you. However, the problem you will come across will be router & firewall issues. There needs to be "port forwarding" in order for the device, most likely the router, to know where to send the rdp connection to. That's where you would PUT the private ip of the pc you want to rdp to.I just set up an RDP connection to a remote computer sitting behind a hardware firewall... Yes, it was the public ip that was needed... I'm currently connected to my dad's computer and running some virus scans... I ran into a problem with authentication at first, because there was no Username/password setup on his computer (i guess you cannot use a "null" password) so I had to have him set up a password on his account... Pretty neat program, RDP.

Solve : Lost My Wi-Fi Connection?

Answer»

OS: Windows XP

I'm not a techie, so I read the above exchanges and I, too, need someone to hold my hand thru this frustrating process.
First of all, I have Windows XP(32-bit processor) and have my internet connection here in Thailand thru ADSL. No problem.
Since I live in a condo building, we have Wi-fi, which my girl friend uses free, thanks to a router I purchased.
Since she left for a month, I disconnected the LAN cable and when she returned, we couldn't get back to Wi-fi.
Apparently, the Wi-fi detected by my PC is fine, no problem. But when I reconnect the CABLES correctly, I can't get my ADSL connection to work. The signal is coming thru fine, but I can't access any Internet sites, unless I disconnect from the router and just use ADSL.
The3 router is D-Link Model DIR-300
The modem: HUAWEI Smartax MT880 Router 1E
My Internet Connection: Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fest Ethernet NIC
Adapter: Atheros AR500 5G Wireless Network Adapter

I will try to provide any additional information you need.

First, reset the router (press and hold the reset button for 10-15 seconds untill all leds start blinking), and check if you can get a connection using a cable afterwards (wait 30 seconds before plugging in the ethernet cable). If not, unplug the power cable from your modem, plug it back in and restart your computer. Does it work now? If not, there might be an issue with your router, but I doubt there will be any issues once you've done these steps.

Next, go to Start -> Run and type 'cmd'

Next, in the command window (the black window you've just opened) type ipconfig /all

Now you will see your IP-Address and default gateway. The default gateway should be something like 192.168.0.1

Type that address in your internet browser, you should be seeing your router's login page now. If you cannot locate the username and password at the back of the router or in the manual, check the website or else try "admin" and "admin" or "admin" and "password". If nothing works, let us know so we can look it up for you.

Once you're in the router, check the wireless settings, make sure the wireless radio is enabled and set the security mode to WPA2 Personal or something. Use your mobile phone number as the passphrase or simply use any of the following:

1a2s3d4f5g

Or

1a2b3c4d5e

Or use anything you like. Save the settings, unplug the ethernet cable and try connecting using the WLAN (make a wireless connection). If it still does not work, let us know, and also if you need other support, simply reply. No success with your first suggestion. When I got to "type that address in your internet browser", I'm lost. I use Google Chrome and Firefox 3.5, but don't know how to find the place to type the address...Instead of typing "http://www.google.com" to access a website such as google, you would type the "numeric" web interface address of your HOME router using the "Default Gateway" address returned by the "ipconfig /all" command. For example: "http://192.168.0.1".I just typed : http://192.168.0.102/ in the browser and got a".....is not available....1. If you reset the router per "Hardist" instructions, the router should have the default address of "192.168.0.1". Try that address.o.k. the D-link home page opened and I couldn't find my username or password, not on the router, "admin/password" didn't work.Quote from: dahlarbear on January 25, 2010, 09:24:41 PM

Solve : Adding additional IP addresses to home network?

Answer»

Is it possbile to add additional IP addresses to a Netgear Router? CURRENTLY we have a router and a ranger expander so I can use my laptop away from the office and use at home. One of the laptops get a limited access message I it may have to do with not being able to ACQUIRE an IP address.1. With a home router, there's GENERALLY Network Address Translation (NAT) function built in which permits all of the computers on your private network to share "one" IP address provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). So I guess I don't understand why you need "additional" IP addresses.

Also, I'm not sure what the "range expander" has to do with additional IP addresses (but I've never used one, so maybe I'm missing something...).

2. How many private addresses are you currently using?

3. Are you TRYING to add "additional" IP addresses provided by the ISP to your network so you have multiple "public" addresses?

Have your friend (including yourself) install and use the same version of VLC (use your current version)... When you install VLC it will automatically open a port in Windows Firewall, so don't worry about Windows Firewall. However, if YOU are the one sending the unicast (in your case sending a movie to a someone else's single comptuer), if your friends computer is behind a router, he/she will have to FORWARD a port in the router to a virtual port on the computer that is viewing the movie.. It's pretty easy to do, if you know where to look..(give me the make/model of your friends router if you need help with it)
You will forward a port in the router to UDP port 1234 on your friends computer... You can use other ports and options but lets not get into that right now Basically, for your friend's side of the connection, all he/she has to do is install VLC, and forward the port in the router and that's it..

Once your friend is set up, do this:

Place a DVD into the DVD drive on YOUR computer.. whatever you want to play... Open VLC on your computer, click on "file", click on "open disc".. Leave the disc type set on "DVD (menus)" .........Check the Stream/Save box and click on "settings"

Put a check in the "play locally" box.... This will play the movie on your own computer when the movie starts.. Now, put a check in the UDP box and get on the phone with your friend... Have them boot up their computer and leave it ON. Tell them to open a browser firefox/IE whatever, and them go to www.showip.com Have your friend give you the IP address that is displayed on the screen... You need to enter that ip address into the "Address" box next to "UDP"..........leave the port number (1234) as it is.. Under "Encapsulation Method" make sure MPEG TS has a bubble in it..

Click OK to close that screen and then click OK again to close the other screen that is open..Give it 10 to 15 seconds for the movie to DISPLAY on your screen... You will have CONTROL over Options on the DVD movie with your mouse... You can use the mouse to click "Play" or any other possible selections on the DVD's menu..

When the movie pops up on your computer, have your friend open up VLC player, click "file" and click on "open network stream"... Next tell your friend to click on the OK button on that screen and the movie should pop up on their computer within seconds..

btw.. If you want to use a .avi file you can...

Assuming it is a working .avi file (if you made it yourself make sure it works in another media player before try this), do EVERYTHING the way I told you, but instead of selecting "Open disk" from the "file" menu, select "open file".. On the top right, browse for the .avi file..
When the .avi file is selected click on "stream/save" again and click "settings" and do the exact same thing I told you before.... Whether you use a DVD or .avi file, do not add any port numbers to the end of the IP address that you are sending the video too........like you did here: 84.196.91.15:8080

As I said, leave the UDP port at it's default settingI will try this. Thank you very much you are a great guy.
Just want to mention that I have windows firewall disabled (maybe he has that too) and I'm using Kerio Personal Firewall with strict rules. Perhaps I should turn it off. Dunno.Yes, disable all third-party firewalls.

For now, I think you should disable Kerio Firewall and just keep Windows Firewall enabled... I have no idea what kind of restrictions your Kerio firewall puts on the computer, aside from port blocking...

edit: also.. This is Internet, so, your friend may run into the same type of buffering (temporary movie screen freezes) problems as anyone else would that is watching a YOUTUBE video.. This is a bandwidth-sensitive application!
If this happens, we can probably make some adjustments.. Note: There will be a slight time difference in the video on your screen and the video on your friends screen, since the video has to travel across the Internet...

Solve : FTP log in problem?

Answer»

FTP Problem

My server is XP Media Center addition with all updates applied according to Microsoft. I am trying to connect two computers on my local network using FTP which are both in the same domain behind a Linksys internet wireless router/switch with a firewall and both local machines have windows firewall running. I Installed IIS on my server MACHINE

Parameters as follows:
TCP port 21
10 connections
900 second connection timeout
Allow ANONYMOUS Connections - checked
Username IUSR_BIG-KAHUNA
Password XXXX (simple 4 character alpha password)
Allow only anonymous connection - unchecked
Allow IIS to control password - unchecked
Banner MESSAGE : BIG-KAHUNA FTP SITE
no other messages set
FTP Site Directory
Local Path c:\inetput\ftproot
Read - checked
Write - unchecked
Log visits - checked

Directory Listing Style
MS-DOS - checked

When I try to log on at the command prompt from another (or the same) computer in the same domain I get

c:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ftp big-kahuna
Connected to Big-Kahuna.
220-Microsoft FTP Service
220 BIG-KAHUNA FTP SITE (Current Sessions... shows Connected user from appropriate IP address)
User (Big-Kahuna:(none)): IUSR_BIG-KAHUNA (Current Sessions... shows IUSR_BIG-KAHUNA user from appropriate IP address)
331 Password required for IUSR_BIG-KAHUNA.
Password: XXXX (Current Sessions... shows Connected user from appropriate IP address)
530 User IUSR_BIG-KAHUNA cannot log in.
Login failed.
ftp>

Seems I am getting a connection, attaching a user, but then failing on the password for some reason. Any ideas?Try turning off the firewall / ALSO try changing the password.

Alan <>< I tried the following
1. New password (seven character alpha string)
2. Turned off windows firewall
3. Opened the command window (on the same machine)

Unfortunately got the these same results.
1. Connected to FTP
2. Recognized user
3. Failed on password entry ('530 User IUSR_BIG-KAHUNA cannot log in.')
hello phil,

As per M$ KB this problem occurs when one of the following scenarios is true:

The Allow only anonymous connections security setting has been turned on in the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
The username does not have the Log on locally permission in User Manager.
The username does not have the Access this computer from the network permission in User Manager.
The Domain Name was not specified together with the username (in the form of DOMAIN\username).

Did you verify and check as per this KB

Solve : speed test?

Answer»

Hi
Could someone please explain, in my router status my downstream speed is 10.6 mbs if I run a speed test it shows between 2-6 mbs at BEST, sometimes less than 1 mbs.

I have spoken to sky and they tell me I have 11 mbs which is the best my line can handle.
Am I missing something?

Router is a Netgear adsl dg834gt.
Thanks in advance.
Is this DSL connection?
Speedtest results will vary, depending on time of the day, how busy servers are, possible ISP throttling, etc., but if you pay for 11Mbps and you're constantly getting much less, I'd complain to your ISP.Hi
I assume it’s dsl I’m actually paying for 20 mbs but sky have told me the line will only handle 11 mbs, o.k. if that’s the best the line can handle so be it.

The bit I don’t understand is the fact that in my router the downstream speed SAYS 10.6 mbs, so isn’t that what should show on the online speed test.

Is there something wrong with the router settings or my P.C.
Depends from your ISP how much of internet gives you.
Your router can handle till that speed which is 11Mbps and it has nothing to do with it.
Explain please how much of internet speed you pay, because i do posses a router with 11Mbps and I do pay for internet speed 512kbps which is a ADSL connection.

cheers.I'd think about switching to cable anyways, if thats possible. If you're paying for 20 and only getting 11, you're already getting screwed. Not to mention the unknown problem that's dropping that 11 to much less. It's kinda hard to tell what it could be though, LIKE Broni said. Actually, now that I think about it, 20 Mb/s is awesome for DSL. The most you can get from any DSL provider in my area is maybe 11 Mb/s. If you want any better, you'd better switch to cable. The bit I’m most interested in is in my router status, it says downstream speed 10.6 is this the speed that the router is receiving or the max possible speed.

If I am getting 10.6 as far as the router then sky have done their bit and I will have to look at the wireless side of things.

I know I should use an Ethernet connection for my speed test but it’s not possible due to the router location.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be gratefully received.

So you're getting 10.6Mb/s to the router, and then it falls to around 1-6Mb/s at the PC, which is connected wirelessly. Maybe its a range issue? I seriously doubt it though. Have you contacted support at Netgear?YES that about sums it up, the router is only about 4metres from the p.c and the signal strength is showing as good.

I’m afraid my knowledge of networking isn’t great, so I guess Netgear support is the next step.

Thanks
I've done my share of setups with wireless routers, but i've never encountered this type of issue. It's quite possible someone else here can still help though. By the way, you can monitor your speeds through your router?Hi.
Just a quick update problem much improved I updated the driver for my wireless dongle and turned off windows firewall and am now getting 9.8 mps which I am happy with.

Can someone just confirm that the windows firewall is not needed if the router has its own firewall?
Thanks
Normally, most people have them both.Quote from: aussie11 on January 29, 2010, 12:38:17 PM

Can someone just confirm that the windows firewall is not needed if the router has its own firewall?
I can tell you this. I turned off my software firewall in my laptop running Windows Vista and ran a firewall test at http://www.auditmypc.com/firewall-test.asp. I'm using a router between my modem and my computer. The test results said:

"We completed the audit and did not find any open ports.
This is ideal for the average visitor."

I can recall this very question being discussed in this forum many months ago with a forum member named Calum, a former forum moderator, and the conclusion of that discussion was that being online without a software firewall is safe when using a router.

However, I will add that a hardware firewall, i.e. a router, will not detect illegitimate outgoing signals from your computer, just as Windows firewall in Windows XP does not monitor outgoing traffic. So, if, by chance, you had some malware that sending out unknown communication from your computer, that would not be stopped by the router.

So, if you know your system is clean, that you have no malware that existed prior to DISCONTINUANCE of a software firewall, you can feel pretty confident about only relying on a router for firewall protection. Someone could tell me to create a new topic, I just want to ask the following question:
Does the proxy server affect on the firewall or not?

I made this question because the ISP that provides me with internet uses proxy server. Is that Safe or not?

Cheers.Hi
After several speed tests with and without win firewall I have come to the conclusion that it makes little difference so I have decided to leave it on, must have been the driver update that improved things.

Thanks again for all the help.

Solve : Unsecured Wireless Modem? How do I??

Answer»

Hello and thank you for reading my thread.

I have a D-Link DSL-G604T ADSL2+ wireless router, that I use to connect to the internet at my house and recently found that it is unsecured. (I know nothing of wireless internet)

I also found out, that that meant anybody can use my internet from anywhere around my house and beyond. Luck be with me, so far I haven't had any problem in that regard that I know of.

My computer Desktops and Towers are connected through cables to each computer via one of each of the four ports on the D=link modem. (it varies as to whether I have 4 or less connected at any one time.)

None of the computers have a wireless card in them.

I downloaded the instruction manual for the D-Link G604T from their WEBSITE and in reading it have tried to set it up so that I can make it secure.
I have never used wireless before and some of the terms used evade my understanding. So I used best guess technology.

My brother talked me through some setup procedures, only to finally realise that I was cable connected and didn't need all that preparation and said to just tick/or untick in the box AP and save, and it should cure my problem, that together with removing the Ariel from the router. How good that is I don't know?
We discussed and accessed different areas in the D-Link set up that included Mac addresses and hexadecimal codes.
So I am aware of these things now.

Now I have some laptops that have wireless technology and sometimes they connect and sometimes they don't, or connect but with limited connectivity.
I have played with some settings but just haven't found the correct settings to get it all functional and secure.

Can someone please help with setting up this complex situation.

I worked out that I can NAME my router so that I can identify it against other networks around me that the wireless laptops find, and have succeeded in naming the router.
Primarily I would like the router set secure so nobody around me can use my connection, but I need access for the laptops as well.

I hope that I have explained my predicament correctly.

Thank you ImnoGuru. Hello,
When you log into the router, look for WPA2 encryption. Enable it and create a password for it. Then from the laptops, search for your wireless router and connect to it with that password.

The MAC address filtering, disabling broadcasting and WEP encryption are all easily hackable so don't waste your time messing with those. WPA2 is the best way to secure your network. Thanks tmoe30, for your reply. I'm sorry for the delay in getting back, lots of birthdays this time of year for me.
Mate Im still trying to get my head around WPA and now I have to find out about WPA2. I suppose it cant be too much harder than WPA

Well, safer is BETTER. Although... these lappies are new so there's nothing on them of any real significance yet. Its not as though I use them for banking or BUYING things yet. So I guess there will be a day, at least I will have a chance to learn about it then before it becomes absolutely necessary.

Patio's post in another thread has the process of walking through a setup, step by step.
Thank you patio as well for that. ( I'm actually beginning to understand what I'm talking about now)
As you stated tmoe30 the WPA2 is better, security wise and I guess I just may as well use that for all my connections to the network.

Thank you ImnoGuru.

Solve : how do I view other computer's on my wireless network??

Answer»

is there a way to view the computer name of a person on my wireless network?

thanks,
S_R_STake a look in your router admin panel. If you happen to have a D-Link DI-524 router, which is what I have, I could tell you exactly where to find it.where might i find it? you said you could tell me how to on yours well can you? thanks.I access my router by ENTERING 192.168.0.1 in the web address box of my browser and then entering the username and password. 192.168.0.1 is the common URL for many routers but it could be different. The initial panel that appears has 5 buttons in a vertical column on the left side of the panel. The bottom one is DHCP. I click on it. NEAR the bottom of that panel is a list under "Dynamic DHCP CLIENT List ". That's where it shows the NAMES of computers that have accessed the Internet or the local network via my router.

Whether you will have the same thing really depends on how the admin panel for your particular router is designed. My router has a Help tab in the admin panel; from there, I can obtain info on many of the features of the router.

Thanks.. You helped alot. =)

Solve : blocked sites???

Answer»

My internet connection is fine, but when I try to access my Yahoo Mail, the home page will load fine, then when I click mail it gives me the "cannot display" page. The same goes for Facebook. You can access them by USING a proxy, but I would like to try and fix the problem. Any suggestions? What OS are you using and version web browser?

What browser, Windows version?FIRST off, let me say I'm not in FAVOR of censorship or blocking "good" sites, e.g. yahoo mail, facebook.

So... What's the story here? Are you on a business, school, or other public network where the "authorities" might be trying to control your access? Or is this a home network with no KNOWN blocking scheme in place?

Is it not possible that certain sites are busy and your access attempts are "timing out"?

Is it possible your organization or ISP is blocking them by not resolving the web site to an IP address?

You can try using the OpenDNS servers for DNS name resolution. Hmmm... Looking at the following link I see that they may do some "filtering" and keep logs of all DNS name resolution requests. It's possible your organization has access to these logs.

http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13554_1-9834579-33.html

At any RATE I've had some success accessing blocked sites by using outside DNS name server addresses such as OpenDNS:

208.67.220.220

Solve : Double guessing my ISP's instructions to use a second PC?

Answer»

I'm a total newbie. I already own my own desktop (Dell). My provider delivers my internet connection through the cable TV system. (I do not own a land line phone system). The cable is split off the TV signal into a cable modem I purchased from my ISP and then to my PC by an Ethernet patch cable.

Someone gave me a used PC (HP PAVILION) and for now all I want to do is check it out by disconnecting the Dell and using the cable modem and E/net patch chord to momentarily connect the new HP to the internet but without success.

I ran the connection wizards. Network Connections in control panel indicate I am connected. The truth is I'm not. Every attempt to connect fails.

My ISP says, they would out of courtesy, let me switch PC's to use the connection a couple of times on the new PC so I could check it out but I have to call them to make the changes each time. In a perfect world that might be manageable but it's not a perfect world. I don't want to lose my original connection to the Dell any longer then I manage the time. I don't want to have to call them and rely on them, I want to be able to switch back and forth at will. I live in a small town where the TV and ISP is the same and it is owned by the city.

Is there any other way? Can I piggy back off of my original PC somehow?

My ISP suggested I buy a router, plug it all up and call them so they can reset my cable modem to allow this network connection. Is this the only way to do it?

I appreciate your time, I THINK you guy's are great and have helped me on many occasions in my newbie world. My knowledge is limited, I learn terms as they are given to me so go slow if you have a suggestion.

It is the best way to do it.So I'm guessing by your comment that there isn't any other way to temporarily circumvent the router. At this time I don't have the extra $ to put down on a router for what may be a one time deal.

Well, there's seems to be a contradiction here:
Quote
I want to be able to switch back and forth at will.
Quote
what may be a one time deal.

Anyway, if you open Device Manager, does it show a properly working Network adapter? If you go to Control Panel and open Network Connections, what do you see there? Is anything shown there to be in disconnected status? The reason you need to call your ISP if you want to switch computers is most likely because the ISP is registering the MAC address of your computer and blocking attempts to connect from a computer with a different MAC address. The MAC address is an unique address embedded into the hardware of each network card installed in your computers.

I've never understood why some ISPs feel a need to do this but it is a pretty widespread practice. In fact it is so widespread, that most consumer routers can change their MAC address at will in order to circumvent this practice.

Just like routers can change their MAC address you can actually change the MAC address of your computer. If you're interested in knowing how to do this I will need to know what version of Windows you have installed on both computers.1. Your cable modem is connected to your desktop via an ethernet cable. Do you have the option of replacing the ethernet cable with a USB cable to connect the two?

2. What operating systems are your Dell and HP desktops using? Their Microsoft operating systems probably support Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS is used when you want to share the internet connection of one of your desktop computers with the rest of your Local Area Network (LAN) computers. It requires two network connections on the hosting computer; one to the internet, the other to the LAN. This can be two ethernet network adapters (NICs), or one NIC and one USB connection (if your cable modem supports a USB interface?). Not positive about the USB connection for ICS. Never tried that configuration.

The shared connection to the internet was traditionally a dial-up, but ICS can be configured for a broadband internet connection (cable).

Information on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) may be FOUND within the Help function provided with the Microsoft operating systems. You can also search the internet for information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Connection_Sharing

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310563

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1dcff3ce-f50f-4a34-ae67-cac31ccd7bc9&displaylang=en

3. While you may think Internet Connection Sharing is exactly what you need, it's a poor substitute for the "router" you should be purchasing. INSTEAD of spending money for a second NIC card, save your dollars and get a "router". The time you spend struggling to setup ICS would be better spent struggling to setup a router.
Thanks; soybean, deerpark and dahlarbear.

You all put it into perspective and I understand more now than I did before. I really appreciate your help.

Happy New Year to you and yours.

Solve : No Internet Connection...please help?

Answer»

OK...I know there are hundreds of threads on this topic, but I cannot find any help in ones listed. Or maybe...I am just over looking a small step. So here is my issue....

I have a linksys G router for our two laptops for remote and the desktop wired into the router. It worked in this configuration before Christmas. Desktop states that it has "Limited or No Connectivity". So I unhook from the router and plug straight into modem...same thing.

Here is my info:

Windows IP Configuration

Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : home
Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 4:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NETGEAR GA311 Gigabit Adapter
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1B-2F-C9-8F-C5
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.70.51
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

Here is what I have done so far:
1. Un-installed and re-installed drivers
2. Manually and automatic IP address in the properties
3. ipconfig/renew
4. Change from router to wall connection and back
5. Ran network wizard

The only thing that I haven't done is pull up the router's webpage and directly enter the computer itself as one of the computers to accept, but I never had to do this prior.

Can anyone suggest what my next step should be? Any assistance would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.Hello Lost_Hope, welcome to CH.

What operating system is this?I've had the exact same problem with my desktop computer. Up till today, it's still a bit shaky. Sometimes it's limited or no connectivity, and sometimes it behaves normally. My guess is the machine's too old, i've had it for 8 - 9 years already.

How long have you had your machine for?The machine is almost 3 years old. I am running XP and IE7, but I think that I am going to change over to Foxfire. The machine has worked great until almost a week ago. I thought the modem went bad, upgraded the modem and still same same. I dont know what the root of this evil is?It's called Firefox.

Have you recently scanned for virus/malware in Safe Mode?No I haven't. I dont know why I didnt think of that. Thanks for the reminder.

BTW..."Foxfire" is an old publication(s) of how things where in the frontier DAYS and not a web browser. I need to stop looking at the books in the house when I type...lol. But that is what happens when the wife and I collect antiques. Thanks again.Set your DHCP server and default gateway to the routers IP address.Did the virus SCAN and set the addresses to the router...and still no connection. Anybody have any other suggestions before I have to take it in to be serviced? Thanks in advance. Now that you have those settings, try rebooting the router. Remove the power for about 30 seconds or so then reapply power. You could do a total reset of the router...but i doubt that would work.

It could be that your ethernet cable is damaged. Try getting a new one?1. Is it just the "desktop" computer that has connectivity problems? Do the laptops still have internet connectivity through the router and modem?

2. The IP address "169.254.70.51" indicates the desktop upon boot was unable to locate a DHCP server for assignment of IP Address, Subnet Mask, and probably DNS server addresses. In a Home Local Area Network (LAN), the DHCP server function is usually enabled and provided by the router (e.g. Linksys G Router).

The address "169.254.70.51" indicates a basic network connectivity problem, not an internet connectivity problem. The problem is on the LAN side of the router, not the WAN (internet) side. (I've been told "ipconfig /renew" won't refresh this. You must correct cause and reboot desktop to reset IP address)
Either there is no DHCP server available or there is a physical connectivity problem within your LAN.

Possible causes:

o Overall bad router (try different router or eliminate router altogether)
o DHCP function not enabled within router (enable within configuration)
o Bad LAN port on router (try different LAN port)
o Bad ethernet cable (try different cable)
o Bad LAN port on desktop

3. Suggest the following:
o Check the status LEDs for desktop and router for the ports the ethernet cable connects to. Desktop usually has at least two LEDs; link and activity status.
o Use "ping" utility at desktop to test TCP/IP software stack and NIC card access.
- Test software stack "ping 127.0.0.1"
- Test NIC card access "ping 169.254.70.51" or whatever current IP address value.
o Setup two computer LAN by using CROSSOVER ethernet cable to directly connect desktop LAN port to one of the laptop LAN ports. Manually configure static IP configuration on both to place on same LAN. Drop firewalls to allow ping through. See if they can ping each other.

Solve : Need help setting up a wired Internet Connection (D-Link)?

Hi Everyone,

Right now, I have two COMPUTERS using the Internet through a Hub. They have different IP's because our Internet provider gives two as default.
I have another computer that I would like to connect to the Internet, but asking for another IP costs money. Therefore, I have gotten myself a Router (D-link DI-604) hoping to use one IP over two computers. All computers are running legal Windows XP Home Edition.

I have tried to get it work many times with failure.
Here is the setup:

Internet -> Hub -> Computer A
-> Router -> Computer B
-> Computer C

Using the manual I have tried connect Computer B to the router.
I have made the following settings as provided in the manal:
IP = 192.168.0.3
subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
Gateway as 192.168.0.1

When I put in 192.168.0.1 it tells me that it has taken too long to connect to the page. The connection is there, but I can't get to the Login Page.
I tried direct connection of the Internet to the Router (without the Hub), and repeated the process, but it still doesn't work. I also reseted the Router.

The reason why I would like to connect the third computer is because I recently formated the computer and freshly installed Windows XP. But I do need to register and get the updates. I wish I could just unplug the connection from one of the computer and plug it into this third one, but every time I do that I have to call the provider so they can set it up the DHCP, DNS or something, so I can use it. And it usually takes a long time because they put me on hold.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would try to provide as much information as I can.

Thank you in advance.

JJ1. More info (if you know):
a. What type of broadband internet connection do you have (DSL or Cable)?

b. Do you plan to host services that are visible to the internet (e.g. web site) or just access the internet?

c. Does your Internet SERVICE Provider (ISP) provide static or dynamic IP addresses to you? (In other words, are your two external IP addresses always the same or do they change from time to time?)

d. Does the ISP require the MAC address of your DSL/Cable Modem and/or that of your two connected computers? (Not sure why they need this, but rumour is some ISPs require this information).

2. A typical home network configuration is:

Internet -> Router -> Computer A
-> Computer B
-> Computer C

3. Since you don't seem to be familiar with your router, you should become so before proceeding. (The problem with wizards is they'll tell you what they do but not how they do it; so when you need to troubleshoot a connection failure you're clueless.) Specifically you need to be able to access and change its configuration parameters thru its web administration interface (e.g. http://192.168.0.1?). Don't attempt to connect router to internet at this time. Just take the third computer, connect it to the router, and practice setting up, interfacing with, and communicating with the router. Use the following standalone configuration:

Router -> Computer C

While this advice may sound lame to someone who just wants to hook up and use the "third" computer, you should ensure you understand how to use the router before trying to work with your ISP to complete the internet connection.

4. When you're ready, hook the router directly to the internet, reset the DSL/cable modem, and/or work with ISP to get your internet connection working through the router.

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/homenetworking/ht/routerconfigure.htmThanks for the reply. Honestly I've never done much networking. The manual and some basics is as far as my knowledge goes with the router. I'll try to answer your questions:

a) Its a cable connection

b) No website; just to use the Internet

c) I believe it provides a static IP. But when I check the Network Connection Details, I
see a lease that lasts roughly 1 1/2 days. I'm not sure if this has anything to do
with the IP.

d) I am not sure about this, but I think the answer is yes. When a new/different
computer is plugged into the Hub, it does not connect to the Internet. I have to
call the ISP to have them set it up. I am thinking that this is the ISP's way
to makes sure only two MACHINES are given their respective IP and nothing else.

Would a router work as a hub and allow one connection with dedicated IP and two other connection with shared IP? I would think so, but I wasn't really sure, and that is why I stuck a Hub in my configuration. When I was setting up the Router, I see a Default Gateway with VARYING IP addresses. If the Default Gateway is defined, would this mean I would be sharing a single IP with three connections?

I'll definitely try working with alone with the router and computer. I'll post on here of how the progress goes.

Thanks again for the reply. I appreciate it.

JJI gave it a shot and connected the third computer to the router, but without LUCK.
This is what I did:

I connected a cable from the computer to one of the LAN slots. I allowed the computer to automatically obtain the IP and such, but it failed to do so. Therefore, I manually put in the IP/Subset Mask/Gateway numbers given in the manual and then typed the Gateway into IE. The page does not load.

I tried the same process with my main computer but it displays a timed out page.

Are there any alternatives that I can try?
Could it be that the router is broken?I apologize for the chain of posts.

I tried it once again, but this time I used the link you gave me (http://192.168.0.1?) with the question mark at the end. I was taken to a basic upgrade firmware page, where it allowed me to browse for a firmware file and send it. So I downloaded the latest firmware from the D-Link site and clicked Send. It loaded for some seconds but nothing happened. Now, every time I load http://192.168.0.1 it gives me the same upgrade firmware page.

Solve : Problem setting up network usb hub?

Answer»

OK, so here is the thing. I wanted to able to keep my computer in the living room and print to my printer in my bedroom. So, as a CHRISTMAS present to myself, I purchased the Belkin Wireless USB Hub.

I have it plugged in, with an Ethernet cord running from the hub to my wireless router. I plugged my external HARD drive into the hub and it SEEMED to be working.

I go to bed, wake up the next morning and my wireless Internet isn't working, something that happens every now and then. I unplug the router, restart my computer and all that stuff, and after many tries, the Internet is now working again. BUT, now the USB hub control center shows that there are no USB devices plugged into it.

I thought I would add that I have tried to manually set things up (even though it says I shouldn't need to), and I keep getting an error message when trying to do so, "Failed to communicate with Network USB Hub. Please check the network SETTINGS."

Any suggestions? I thought it might be a router setting that needs to be changed or something like that, but I'm pretty clueless. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.Do you have a computer in the bedroom, also? If so, is the printer connected to it, and is that computer connected to your router?Quote from: soybean on January 05, 2008, 05:02:13 PM

Do you have a computer in the bedroom, also? If so, is the printer connected to it, and is that computer connected to your router?

I don't have a computer in the bedroom. The way things are set up, I have my computer in the living room, hooked up to my TV, which I use as the MONITOR. In my bedroom, I have a wireless router that I use for Internet. My printer, at this time, is sitting in my living room next to the computer.

The idea was to buy the wireless USB hub and then hook up my two external hard drive and my printer to the hub in my bedroom, thus freeing up some living room clutter.

The hub and the cable modem are the only things hooked into the router, but my computer is already set up for wireless Internet, and I am not having any problems with Web connectivity at this time.

Solve : Graphical Terminal Emulator- SSH, Telnet?

Answer»

Hai Dears,

I was using PuTTY TERMINAL emulater for accessing Linux system from windows. But PuTTy is a comand line terminal emulater where we cannot see any graphical application. But PuTTY is freely available.

By the way- I need to access the GUI of Linux from windows. Therefore I need any Graphical Terminal Emulator. anyone knows any free GTE software??

I tried in google but couldn't find

Thanks is in advance

Regrads,
akilActually what you want is a Remote Desktop ADMINISTRATION application. A terminal emulator is by nature text based (since the terminals it is emulating was text based). What GUI is the linux machine(s) using? (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, etc). Thanks Deerpark.

We have two servers one is Linux red hat 9 other one is windows 2003 server. Also we have 15 XP PCs which are the clients of windows 2003..

At this moment what we are doing is from the all 15 XP PCs we are connecting the Linux SERER by using PuTTy (Terminal Emulator) at a same time. But PuTTY has command line user interface.

Now What I want is I need to access the LINUX Graphical interface from all the 15 PCs at a same time. I mean the every user should be able to log in the Linux by using their individual account

You mentioned about Remote Desktop Administration application. can all users access(log in) the PCs in same time from this application ???if it so, please can u give the details of the software?

GUI is GNOME

once again Thanks 4 ur time

REGARDS
akil

Check out the last post in this thread on another forum.
http://www.linuxservertalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=258

(Download the free edition from here to get the vncviewer.)

I don't believe VNC allows more than one user at the same time though. It's not something I've ever had any need for so can't give you much help there. Thanks Deerpark

Yeah the VNC is one kind of Remote Desktop Administration application software where one user can access the Desktop the Meanwhile other useres can only able to see the desktop but they cannot access..

This Real VNC software currently I'm using for Remotely access the client PCs..

But what I'm asking for is,, U know PuTTY rite? Through the putty so many users can log into the Linux server from XP client PCs. But they can only use command line user interface not GUI.. But what I want is Graphical user interface..

Anyway Thanks for you time and Links

Anyone please COULD give me solution for this.

Kind Regards,
akil

VNC can be multi-user (use different ports) but it's insecure. PuTTY is text-mode only.

What you really want to do is run an X Server on your local PC, connecting to your Linux server to run applications remotely. Consider Xming or Cygwin/X.

Solve : Installed ethernet card...Now I cant get online?

Answer»

I have a Compaq EVO D 510 running win XP. It has been working fine but today it stopped connecting to the internet. I NOTICED the green light where the ethernet cord plugs in did not light up anymore so I assumed the CARD was no good. I did hook up the same cord to another PC and it lit up on that one. So I TOOK a ethernet card out of an old computer and put it in the EVO...Windows recognized the card, INSTALLED the drivers. In my connections it says connected but I can not connect to the internet. The old ethernet card is still in it as it is built in. I'm not sure if there is a conflict or just something I need to configure. Thanks in advance for any help.

No.

I did hook up the same cord to another PC and it lit up on that one.

1. Does "another PC" successfully connect to the internet (to same physical internet connection as "problem" PC used)?

2. How does the "problem" computer connect to the internet (DSL/Cable/Other)?
a. Internet -> Modem -> Computer
or
b. Internet -> Modem -> Home Router/Switch -> Computer
Bring up a command prompt and enter the command "ipconfig". Cut and paste the results here.

(Could a mod move this to networking, PERCHANCE?)Sorry about not having the post in the proper forum.

The internet connection goes through a router and to the problem computer.
It is DSL.I had an older Compaq computer which I just replaced with the EVO. The older one worked fine as far as the internet goes. The computer is in my kids room and the ethernet cord gets unplugged alot to be used in an Xbox.I had the EVO hooked up for a few weeks and it worked fine but then just the other day it would no longer get online and i noticed the green light near where the cord plugs in would not light anymore. i assumed maybe all of the plugging and unplugging might have damaged the connectors. The cord still works fine in the Xbox. So I took the card out of the older Compaq and put it in the EVO. The original one on the EVO was built in so i could not remove it.When I turned on the computer it said new hardware found..installed the drivers..says its working properly but I get a server not found when I open my browser. Also I just noticed that the green light on this card stays on even when no ethernet cord is plugged in. I have installed cards before and after the drivers were installed it always just worked.

Thanks for any help

Solve : Replacing a Server 2000 Domain Controller with a Server 2003 one?

Answer»

I'm trying to replace the entire Windows 2000 Server with a new 2003 version. The problem I'm having is that I NEED to have all the profiles that are on all the workstations LOG into this new server as if it was the old one. Can I do this by simply configuring the server 2003 with the same settings as the old one? (IP numbers, etc) I'd hate to have to go to all the workstations & re-setup local setting like their email and so forth, this is just a basic setup and I'm not looking to use roaming profiles. I just need to fool all the workstations into thinking they are logging into the same old domain. How can this be done? Thanks. I'm not as familiar with setting up new servers, but I think you can migrate all the settings from 2000 to 2003.
Yahoo! SEARCH: Migrate server 2000 to 2003 came up with a bunch of results that look promising. Don't give the new server the IP for the "old" server. Just add it to domain as a new Domain Controller and see what services you have to disable on the old server and enable on the new server (DHCP, DNS etc).
See here some info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325379
Search some time for informations about how to do it, ASK us where you don't understand, and take your time, don't be in a hurry for you will be mistaken. As Viking said. You're probably best off joining this server to the domain, promoting it to a domain controller, transferring over the various AD roles and gracefully retiring (or redeploying) the old server.

Solve : Really Slow internet!!!!!!?

hi all i have been having some problems with my INTERNET...lately it has been really slow.....its take ages to load youtube videos and when i play on-line games my ping reaches 350 easy...it got slow in the last couple of DAYS i haven't installed anything new and i scanned my computer for ad-ware and VIRUSES...i have a netgear modem which is connected to my computer via Ethernet cable..BTW my internet is not capped..Did you scan for viruses and malware in safe mode?
And is this limited broadband? Some ISPs slow down your connection to crawl when you exceed the download limit.no i havnt yet scaned in safe mode but i will soon im USING an onlinescanner right now and no our download limit has not been reached yetComputer specs needed. What results do you get from http://www.speedtest.net/?i got this from the speed test:

I wouldn't complain about that then at all. Possibly the speed problems are out there on the wider internet. In which case, there ain't a fat lot you can do about it.i know my internet isnt great but its has been slower the past couple of days....Keep going to the speedtest page, particularly when the connection is slow, and see if you get different results.ok thankshey i just ran the speed test again and i got only 3990 download and 285 upload
hi all i would just like to say that the problem fixed itself my internet is fast again.....well fast enough lol thanks for everyones help i really appreciate it Great. The variation in download speed is tiny - and the variation in upload speed should hardly affect your browsing experience at all.

Solve : Voip for wireless broadband??

Answer»

I have been playing arround with Voip, trying to cut costs of phone bill. Yes I can get Vonage & packet 8 to work, but it's like using insect repellant; some work better then others but still is only effective for so long. I have a fairly good PROVIDER according to diognostic tests. I understand some of the issues with WIRELESS. Is there anyone else that has any experience with wireless Broadband and voip that may give me some input as to which voip provider is best or if there is another way (System) to make phone calls that would be some what reliable and affordable. I've been using Yahoo Messenger's PC-to-phone service and it's WORKED fairly good for me. I've used it from a tower PC running Win XP and connected to my router by cable and recently have used it from a Notebook PC running WINDOWS Vista and connecting to my router by wireless connection. This is only costing me 1 cent/min. for long distance calls in the U.S.

Skype also seems to a popular PC phone service. I haven't used it but have seen it demonstrated. I don't know how their pricing is structured. Is your IP server wireless? Mine is that's why I'm having so much trouble. I tried Vonage V Phone which similar I think (PC to phone), 1 cent a min that sounds good it should be simple to use and set up since I also use Yahoo messenger. Am I safe to assume that a mic is all I need? Thanks for the responce and info. MichaelQuote

Is your IP server wireless?
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. I use my DSL service, using the DSL modem provided by them and my D-Link DI-524 wireless router, the same hardware and ISP I was using before I started using Yahoo Voice.

Quote
Am I safe to assume that a mic is all I need?
Yes, if using your computer speakers for listening to incoming is OK with you. That's what I do, even though I do have a headpiece that hangs on my ear and could be used for both outgoing and incoming voice. But, to hear the incoming voice on it, I need to disconnect my computer speakers and connect one of the two cords on the headpiece to the speaker jack on my sound card. That's a nuisance, so I just use the regular speakers to listen to incoming voice.

With my tower PC, I do have to keep a distance of 2 1/2 to 3 ft between speakers and headpiece in order to avoid picking up incoming voice in the headpiece and sending annoying feedback back to the other party. I'm sure this has nothing to do with Yahoo Voice; it would be the same with any VoIP service. I actually find my Notebook PC to work better in this respect. The mic can be much closer to the built-in speakers on the Notebook and still not pick up incoming voice. But, I should mention I'm using using a different brand/type of mic on each computer, so that might be a factor, too.I've been busy with Xmas season and haven't checked post till now. Wireless connection, meaning that I have wireless microwave IP server (antenna) not DSL Or Cable I am completely wireless to my server. Simulare to sattlelight but microwave with far less latency I connect at 512 kbs download and over 200kbs upload. This is why I have the problems that I do.
I have been using yahoo PC phone since this post it costs $.01 per minute, pay as you use. That's pretty good and I have had no problems as of yet but I must admitte my impatiance with Vonage and Packet 8 has led me to get my land line hooked back up. But I have yahoo for a back up, so far no complaints. Thanks for your responce.Soybean mentioned Skype - I've used this in several locations over wireless connections, via latop, PC (with webcam) and via my wifi-enabled PDA/phone. I've been extremely impressed in all cases. Having said that, I've only made Skype-to-Skype calls. But then, such calls are completely free!

(Spoke to friends in Brazil over Skype with webcam on Christmas day. Fantastic!)
