Solve : What exactly does an ISP do?? |
Answer» Hi, as I understand it an Internet Service Provider simply provides access to the internet for consumers/businesses. They don't host websites themselves or facilitate the hosting of websites do they? This is DONE by separate entities right? They don't host websites themselves or facilitate the hosting of websites do they? Many do.Many do an excellent job of overcharging for their services. Quote from: jarv on February 07, 2010, 09:51:38 PM They don't host websites themselves or facilitate the hosting of websites do they? Some will offer "PERSONAL" webspace, MEANING they allow you some space on a web server for a personal WEBSITE. They usually do not offer web hosting for business-oriented websites. When creating a personal website or web page, usually done using an ISP provided online web page editor, the URL to your web page will probably something like http://soybean/embarqspace.com or http://www.embarqspace.com/soybean/index.htm, where embarq is the ISP. But, if you want your own domain name such as www.mysite.com, then you usually need to look elsewhere for a hosting service. And, you need to register your domain name so that you can truly have your own URL, not a web address tacked onto your ISP's domain. Quote from: dahlarbear on February 07, 2010, 10:31:23 PM See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Service_Provider.As stated in that article, the main services of an ISP are Internet access and email. Aegis, totally right. Here's an example: zomg 120 euros a month for 100 MBPS down and 5 Mbps up.. rofl. It's weird you still don't know what an ISP does? It connects you to the Internet to view web pages, download files, chat, and post stuff online.Quote It's weird you still don't know what an ISP does? The original poster was just looking for some clarification. |

Solve : Tracing back an IP (the HTTP protocol fundamentals)? |
Answer» Hi. I've heard that you can always trace back an IP no MATTER what, because of the HTTP protocol. I don't understand how that's possible. Could someone explain it to me? Examples 1) If you are talking to someone on MSN, how can you get his IP without sending a file to him or having him visit an url which logs his IP? He's connected to the MSN server, so I don't get it. 2) Someone tries to ping you, but your router is set so that no one can? Now, I'm not a networking novice (I've STUDIED both datacommunication, networking, TCP/IP and assistant-networking, so that covers a lot, HOWEVER I forgot most of it) but still some people claim that an IP is tracable no matter what. If this is true, then BANKS would be hacked so fast, no? What about the following scenario: IP culprit -> proxy -> proxy -> 100.000 PC botnet -> proxy -> public network -> IP tracer How in the world could IP tracer possibly find the IP of IP culprit? Is it a matter of time/skill/tools? I've had the Federal POLICE come to my college and explain how nearly impossible it is to trace down guys like this. Not to mention that jurisdiction spans over several countries when the botnets are spread out all over the world.. it's almost mission impossible and 99% of the cases they don't bother anymore. What about: IP culprit -> router -> public network -> router -> IP tracer How can tracer find out culprit's IP if culprit's router is set to forbid ping/tracing? What if he is behind a proxy that doesn't allow tracer to do any form of tracing? I just don't get how you can always get someone's IP, supposedly because the HTTP protocol always allows it. I don't get it. lol Someone care to explain? Thank you. Treval Seems like my question is too hard. |

Solve : No wireless Connection.? |

Answer» Had to re-install windows XP. Now my computer has no WIRELESS connections. I DOWNLOADED the drivers from the Gateway website. I open the Newtork Connections in Control Panel, but no connections or icons are listed there. How do I FIX this? Thank you!Let's START at the top. Solve : how to block sites? |
Answer» i want to block some websits without any softwares pls help meYou want to block SITES. Without any software. Not gonna happen. Your operating system itself is indeed, a software.1. I'm generally opposed to "censorship"... Having said that, I'm not sure what your network environment is, what you want to do, and why you want to do it "without any softwares". |

Solve : Nertwork cable unplug? |
Answer» Operating system WINDOWS XP with two network cards, one is disabled, the other is hardwired to a linksys wireless router. I RECENTLY had to rearrange my office and needed a longer cable to connect my computer to the router. When I plugged in the new cable to the NIC card and router I get the network cable unplugged. Check the connection and they are fine, plugged network cable into another computer on the network and that was fine. Is it possible that the other NIC card is interfering with the other NIC card Ran a check in device manager and both NIC cards when enabled are WORKING fine. So any suggestion would help. Why do you have two NIC cards installed? If it worked before I doubt that's a problem, but it would be simple enough to make sure. Just pull out the disabled card. |

Solve : Connecting XP Machine to Home Network trouble? |
Answer» Server is called server because it will act as a print server for other computers. It will also have FILES stored on it that other computers can access. It is not a network server in the traditional sense.1. What's your objective (for the new computer)? Verify Server Computer Configuration 3. Reference(s): a. Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP b. File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows c. Why Can't I See My Computer on the Network? d. Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows e. Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows1. What's your objective (for the new computer)? a. See and access the "shared" files and printers of the network (client)? b. Share some of its files and printers with the network (server)? Answer to 1 is b. 2. Workgroup Name. a. Is the "new" computer a member of a "Domain" or "Workgroup"? b. If workgroup, does it use the same "workgroup" name as the others? Answer to 2. a. Workgroup Answer to 2. b. same "workgroup" Server Computer Configuration a - g is set correctly. Checking on h. now. net user guest command reveals "Account Active Yes"1. Observations. You shouldn't have to do anything "special" to add the "new" computer to your network. It should see the other computers and be seen both by IPv4 address and hostname. You shouldn't have to resort to "static" address assignments or use of the "hosts" file. It's best to troubleshoot networking issues using a minimum configuration. Once it's working, add additional components desired one-by-one to see which, if any, "break" the networking. These additional components might be optional network protocols, firewalls, antivirus/malware software, and/or security software suites. 2. Question(s): a. Is the "new" computer configured for "simple file sharing"? To determine: right-click Start (button) -> Explore -> Tools pull-down menu -> Folder Options... -> View tab -> Advanced settings subsection -> pull down scroll bar -> look for (last ENTRY) "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". b. What firewall(s) are installed on the "new" computer? Are they "disabled"? c. What other security software is installed on the "new" computer? 3. Recommendation. Start over with your troubleshooting efforts by restricting the scope to just two computers, the router, and restoring their network configurations to a known state. a. Use the "new" computer and one of the other "Windows XP SP3" computers. b. For both computers, remove all of the static IPv4 address entries you added to the "hosts" file. Only entry I would keep is "127.0.0.1 localhost". File located at "%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc". c. Reconfigure DHCP server of router to "automatically" assign IPv4 addresses from a "pool". This is to reduce the chance of "operator" error/misconfiguration. If you need DNS addresses try OpenDNS "208.67.222.222", 208.67.220.220"; or Verizon "4.2.2.6", "4.2.2.5"; otherwise just let router pick up the DNS server addresses from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). d. For the "new" computer, reset the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) from a command prompt. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/299357. (1) To open a command prompt, click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste (or type) the following command in the Open box and then press ENTER: cmd (2). At the command prompt, copy and paste (or type) the following command and then press ENTER: NETSH int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt Note If you do not want to specify a directory path for the log file, use the following command: netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt (3). Reboot the computer. e. For the "new" computer, verify it is configured for "simple file sharing". To check: right-click Start (button) -> Explore -> Tools pull-down menu -> Folder Options... -> View tab -> Advanced settings subsection -> pull down scroll bar -> look for (last entry) "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)". f. For the "new" computer, ensure "File and Printer Sharing" is enabled. See File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows. g. For the Local Area Connection (LAN) of both computers ensure the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties (General tab) window is configured to: (1) Obtain an IP address automatically (2) Obtain DNS server address automatically To check: Start -> Control_Panel -> double-click Network_Connections -> double-click Local Area Connection -> General tab -> Properties button -> General tab -> select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties button -> General tab. h. For the "new" computer, ensure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is set to "Default" and not "Disabled". To check: Start -> Control_Panel -> double-click Network_Connections -> double-click Local Area Connection -> General tab -> Properties button -> General tab -> select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) -> Properties button -> General tab -> Advanced button -> WINS tab -> NetBIOS subsection. i. Reboot both computers. 4. Basic test algorithm. a. From command prompt on both computers, run "ipconfig /all" to verify TCP/IP configuration. b. Ensure each computer can successfully ping the other both by IPv4 address and hostname. c. Ensure each computer can access the other both by IPv4 address and hostname. Use Start -> Run -> "\\" and "\\" without the quotes where you substitute the other computer's address and hostname in place of "" or "". 5. Reference(s): a. Diagnose And Repair SOHO networks---------------- 1. Observations. You shouldn't have to do anything "special" to add the "new" computer to your network. It should see the other computers and be seen both by IPv4 address and hostname. You shouldn't have to resort to "static" address assignments or use of the "hosts" file. ---------------- I agree I shouldn't have to do this. However, simply adding the new machine DID NOT WORK! ALL FIREWALLS ARE OFF! Unless there is a hidden firewall I don't know about they are all off. Is there a way to detect HIDDEN firewalls? That would be helpful. As far as adding a machine one at a time. I have already done that! Simple sharing is on, and has been on. EVERYTHING works on this network but the new machine. The new machine has the same WORKGROUP as the other machines and simple sharing is ON. NetBios over TCP/IP is set to default. At one point I put it to ON to see if that made a difference. It didn't ! Before I asked for help in this forum I shut everything down but the new machine and one of the XP machines. No luck. Tried to find it with the other XP machine. no luck. Tried it with the WIndows 7 machine. no luck. Can ping by IP address for it on any of the machines and vice versa, but cannot ping by name. If I add other computers to the network I get better results. Windows 7 is able to locate the computer IF other computers are on the network and I refresh. However, I cannot access anything on the new computer. None of the XP machines can locate the new computer. The hosts files have allowed me to ping by name and by IP address from ANY computer to ANY other computer. To me that is some progress, but OBVIOUSLY useless from a usable network standpoint. I know no one gets paid for the advice offered here, but I'm starting to get repeated advice, just in different ways. This machine not working on the network does not make sense to me, and it doesn't seem to make sense to people here either, so the advice is to start over because this shouldn't be happening. I'm hoping I can isolate what the problem is. I'm beginning to think it's hardware related. Please read below to see if this helps to determine where the problem is. NEW INFORMATION Being frustrated over this whole thing I downloaded Cisco's Network Magic Pro (NMP) and installed it on the new computer. NMP immediately wants to connect to the router. For some reason it cannot find the router from the new XP machine. I also installed NMP on the Windows 7 machine. NMP found the router and mapped my network for me. It found the new computer, but listed it as a device. I changed it to a computer in NMP and it remapped the network. It found the new computer and recognized that it had Windows XP with SP3. However it said that NMP was NOT installed on the new computer. That might be because NMP never found the router on the new XP machine. I can't figure why NMP is unsuccessful at finding the router. ipconfig gives the correct IP address, which is what NMP seems to be looking for. I have tried all the router plugs and switched cables etc. It makes no difference. I AM tempted to try one part of starting over. Is it possible to uninstall the network software on the new machine and reinstall it clean--like it was never on the machine before? I'm wondering if something is corrupted somehow. Anyway I appreciate all the help. That is the state I am in at this point. |

Solve : Host lagging?? |
Answer» Well, yeah, I'm the HOST of a HOME network, my parents and sister are connected to the router. Well, thing is, everytime my parents come home from work and watch movies online, I'd lag, a lot. As in, my ping would RANGE from 300~2000. But whenever no one watches movies or ANYTHING and does something else, my ping would go back to 30~50. I'm just wondering if this could be fixed, cause my parents would watch movies for hours, making me unable to play games.First, your parents shouldn't be watching movies online. |

Solve : VOIP conversations keep dropping? |
Answer» Quote For example, if your router was using 300 Mbps Wireless Access (802.11/n standard) just had to correct myself here... 802.11/n is 600 mbps, not 300 Update: her oovoo (VOIP program) disconnects randomly while she is away from the computer. lolHow come I can not modify new posts? I also read about 'ATM loopback test'. Should I do this one on her router if things don't go well? Anyway, Update: I ASKED her and her house mate about the whole DSL thing, she said yes, it's DSL, phone and internet at the same time. Now to find out if it's router+modem at the same time. She's going to plug it in the phone socket of her room today and she found an 'old LAN cable she used for her laptop'. This should work. We'll see.EEVIAC!! IT WORKED!! She put her DSL line in the phone interface in her room and the whole splitter thing and put her LAN cable in the router then in her laptop and we don't have this problem anymore!!! I'm so happy! Especially because I've asked about his problem to networking people so many times! Me and my girlfriend would like to thank you a thousand times!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!! I'm so happy! Happiest day ever! If you have problems I will always check them out on the forum and do my best to help! Many thank yous and cheers, Treval You're welcome, sir. Now that we know it works with a cable, we've pretty much isolated the problem to the wireless environment. If she still wants to go wireless she can, but will have to make some assessments and tinker a little.. Hm. Our conversation last NIGHT (with cable! =)) lasted 41 minutes before the conversation on her end 'froze' and dropped. I hear her laptop harddisk do a lot of read actions. Rrrrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrrrrr, rrrrrrrr. Dunno. Probably her problem. RAM or something. Also, oovoo on my side builds up endlessly on RAM for some reason. It goes up to 500+ MB (I have 2 GB DDR2 dual channel!) I THINK it's because I'm forcefully blocking every single (and there are a loooot of them) ad DOMAIN from every ad oovoo is trying to show me. I turned off the DNS caching service with HostsMan and this little neat program blocks all the adds. Oovoo's ads say "Don't want to see ads? Buy an oovoo plan". Rofl, I did it the smart way. Maybe oovoo can't deal with me blocking its hundreds of DOMAINS a second. Perhaps that's why the RAM builds up? Dunno. Or perhaps it's just oovoo being memory-leaky. Or! Perhaps some tiny connection problem occurred on her end. =P Also, oovoo requires minimum 128 Kbps up/down, so we're fine. The connection bar is nice and green and all bars are maxed out so that means maximum connectivity. Anyway the problem of connectivity is solved anyway. At least no dropouts. =P I'm not too worried about the rest. |

Solve : Adding additional IP addresses to home network? |
Answer» Is it possbile to add additional IP addresses to a Netgear Router? CURRENTLY we have a router and a ranger expander so I can use my laptop away from the office and use at home. One of the laptops get a limited access message I it may have to do with not being able to ACQUIRE an IP address.1. With a home router, there's GENERALLY Network Address Translation (NAT) function built in which permits all of the computers on your private network to share "one" IP address provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). So I guess I don't understand why you need "additional" IP addresses. |

Solve : Streaming with VLC? |
Answer» Where did you download VLC from ? Your VLC user interface looks different from the version I just downloaded... What version/distribution are you using? I don't see the same options in my interface as I do yours.. I'm using version 0.6.8i. Why so old?Because I downloaded it back then.Trevel.. I got this working on my LAN at home, but I'm not 100% sure how it's going to work out over the Internet... I think it will work though. Have your friend (including yourself) install and use the same version of VLC (use your current version)... When you install VLC it will automatically open a port in Windows Firewall, so don't worry about Windows Firewall. However, if YOU are the one sending the unicast (in your case sending a movie to a someone else's single comptuer), if your friends computer is behind a router, he/she will have to FORWARD a port in the router to a virtual port on the computer that is viewing the movie.. It's pretty easy to do, if you know where to look..(give me the make/model of your friends router if you need help with it) You will forward a port in the router to UDP port 1234 on your friends computer... You can use other ports and options but lets not get into that right now Basically, for your friend's side of the connection, all he/she has to do is install VLC, and forward the port in the router and that's it.. Once your friend is set up, do this: Place a DVD into the DVD drive on YOUR computer.. whatever you want to play... Open VLC on your computer, click on "file", click on "open disc".. Leave the disc type set on "DVD (menus)" .........Check the Stream/Save box and click on "settings" Put a check in the "play locally" box.... This will play the movie on your own computer when the movie starts.. Now, put a check in the UDP box and get on the phone with your friend... Have them boot up their computer and leave it ON. Tell them to open a browser firefox/IE whatever, and them go to www.showip.com Have your friend give you the IP address that is displayed on the screen... You need to enter that ip address into the "Address" box next to "UDP"..........leave the port number (1234) as it is.. Under "Encapsulation Method" make sure MPEG TS has a bubble in it.. Click OK to close that screen and then click OK again to close the other screen that is open..Give it 10 to 15 seconds for the movie to DISPLAY on your screen... You will have CONTROL over Options on the DVD movie with your mouse... You can use the mouse to click "Play" or any other possible selections on the DVD's menu.. When the movie pops up on your computer, have your friend open up VLC player, click "file" and click on "open network stream"... Next tell your friend to click on the OK button on that screen and the movie should pop up on their computer within seconds.. btw.. If you want to use a .avi file you can... Assuming it is a working .avi file (if you made it yourself make sure it works in another media player before try this), do EVERYTHING the way I told you, but instead of selecting "Open disk" from the "file" menu, select "open file".. On the top right, browse for the .avi file.. When the .avi file is selected click on "stream/save" again and click "settings" and do the exact same thing I told you before.... Whether you use a DVD or .avi file, do not add any port numbers to the end of the IP address that you are sending the video too........like you did here: 84.196.91.15:8080 As I said, leave the UDP port at it's default settingI will try this. Thank you very much you are a great guy. Just want to mention that I have windows firewall disabled (maybe he has that too) and I'm using Kerio Personal Firewall with strict rules. Perhaps I should turn it off. Dunno.Yes, disable all third-party firewalls. For now, I think you should disable Kerio Firewall and just keep Windows Firewall enabled... I have no idea what kind of restrictions your Kerio firewall puts on the computer, aside from port blocking... edit: also.. This is Internet, so, your friend may run into the same type of buffering (temporary movie screen freezes) problems as anyone else would that is watching a YOUTUBE video.. This is a bandwidth-sensitive application! If this happens, we can probably make some adjustments.. Note: There will be a slight time difference in the video on your screen and the video on your friends screen, since the video has to travel across the Internet... |

Solve : speed test? |

Answer» Hi Can someone just confirm that the windows firewall is not needed if the router has its own firewall?I can tell you this. I turned off my software firewall in my laptop running Windows Vista and ran a firewall test at http://www.auditmypc.com/firewall-test.asp. I'm using a router between my modem and my computer. The test results said: "We completed the audit and did not find any open ports. This is ideal for the average visitor." I can recall this very question being discussed in this forum many months ago with a forum member named Calum, a former forum moderator, and the conclusion of that discussion was that being online without a software firewall is safe when using a router. However, I will add that a hardware firewall, i.e. a router, will not detect illegitimate outgoing signals from your computer, just as Windows firewall in Windows XP does not monitor outgoing traffic. So, if, by chance, you had some malware that sending out unknown communication from your computer, that would not be stopped by the router. So, if you know your system is clean, that you have no malware that existed prior to DISCONTINUANCE of a software firewall, you can feel pretty confident about only relying on a router for firewall protection. Someone could tell me to create a new topic, I just want to ask the following question: Does the proxy server affect on the firewall or not? I made this question because the ISP that provides me with internet uses proxy server. Is that Safe or not? Cheers.Hi After several speed tests with and without win firewall I have come to the conclusion that it makes little difference so I have decided to leave it on, must have been the driver update that improved things. Thanks again for all the help. |

Solve : Double guessing my ISP's instructions to use a second PC? |
Answer» I'm a total newbie. I already own my own desktop (Dell). My provider delivers my internet connection through the cable TV system. (I do not own a land line phone system). The cable is split off the TV signal into a cable modem I purchased from my ISP and then to my PC by an Ethernet patch cable. My ISP suggested I buy a router, plug it all up and call them so they can reset my cable modem to allow this network connection. Is this the only way to do it?It is the best way to do it.So I'm guessing by your comment that there isn't any other way to temporarily circumvent the router. At this time I don't have the extra $ to put down on a router for what may be a one time deal. Well, there's seems to be a contradiction here: Quote I want to be able to switch back and forth at will.Quote what may be a one time deal. Anyway, if you open Device Manager, does it show a properly working Network adapter? If you go to Control Panel and open Network Connections, what do you see there? Is anything shown there to be in disconnected status? The reason you need to call your ISP if you want to switch computers is most likely because the ISP is registering the MAC address of your computer and blocking attempts to connect from a computer with a different MAC address. The MAC address is an unique address embedded into the hardware of each network card installed in your computers. I've never understood why some ISPs feel a need to do this but it is a pretty widespread practice. In fact it is so widespread, that most consumer routers can change their MAC address at will in order to circumvent this practice. Just like routers can change their MAC address you can actually change the MAC address of your computer. If you're interested in knowing how to do this I will need to know what version of Windows you have installed on both computers.1. Your cable modem is connected to your desktop via an ethernet cable. Do you have the option of replacing the ethernet cable with a USB cable to connect the two? 2. What operating systems are your Dell and HP desktops using? Their Microsoft operating systems probably support Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). ICS is used when you want to share the internet connection of one of your desktop computers with the rest of your Local Area Network (LAN) computers. It requires two network connections on the hosting computer; one to the internet, the other to the LAN. This can be two ethernet network adapters (NICs), or one NIC and one USB connection (if your cable modem supports a USB interface?). Not positive about the USB connection for ICS. Never tried that configuration. The shared connection to the internet was traditionally a dial-up, but ICS can be configured for a broadband internet connection (cable). Information on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) may be FOUND within the Help function provided with the Microsoft operating systems. You can also search the internet for information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Connection_Sharing http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310563 http://www.tutorial5.com/content/view/91/79/ http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1dcff3ce-f50f-4a34-ae67-cac31ccd7bc9&displaylang=en 3. While you may think Internet Connection Sharing is exactly what you need, it's a poor substitute for the "router" you should be purchasing. INSTEAD of spending money for a second NIC card, save your dollars and get a "router". The time you spend struggling to setup ICS would be better spent struggling to setup a router. Thanks; soybean, deerpark and dahlarbear. You all put it into perspective and I understand more now than I did before. I really appreciate your help. Happy New Year to you and yours. |

Solve : Problem setting up network usb hub? |
Answer» OK, so here is the thing. I wanted to able to keep my computer in the living room and print to my printer in my bedroom. So, as a CHRISTMAS present to myself, I purchased the Belkin Wireless USB Hub. Do you have a computer in the bedroom, also? If so, is the printer connected to it, and is that computer connected to your router? I don't have a computer in the bedroom. The way things are set up, I have my computer in the living room, hooked up to my TV, which I use as the MONITOR. In my bedroom, I have a wireless router that I use for Internet. My printer, at this time, is sitting in my living room next to the computer. The idea was to buy the wireless USB hub and then hook up my two external hard drive and my printer to the hub in my bedroom, thus freeing up some living room clutter. The hub and the cable modem are the only things hooked into the router, but my computer is already set up for wireless Internet, and I am not having any problems with Web connectivity at this time. |

Solve : Installed ethernet card...Now I cant get online? |
Answer» I have a Compaq EVO D 510 running win XP. It has been working fine but today it stopped connecting to the internet. I NOTICED the green light where the ethernet cord plugs in did not light up anymore so I assumed the CARD was no good. I did hook up the same cord to another PC and it lit up on that one. So I TOOK a ethernet card out of an old computer and put it in the EVO...Windows recognized the card, INSTALLED the drivers. In my connections it says connected but I can not connect to the internet. The old ethernet card is still in it as it is built in. I'm not sure if there is a conflict or just something I need to configure. Thanks in advance for any help. The old ethernet card is still in it as it is built in. I'm not sure if there is a conflictNo. Try to reset your modem/router.Quote from: scotth711 on January 06, 2008, 07:17:11 PM I did hook up the same cord to another PC and it lit up on that one. 1. Does "another PC" successfully connect to the internet (to same physical internet connection as "problem" PC used)? 2. How does the "problem" computer connect to the internet (DSL/Cable/Other)? a. Internet -> Modem -> Computer or b. Internet -> Modem -> Home Router/Switch -> Computer Bring up a command prompt and enter the command "ipconfig". Cut and paste the results here. (Could a mod move this to networking, PERCHANCE?)Sorry about not having the post in the proper forum. The internet connection goes through a router and to the problem computer. It is DSL.I had an older Compaq computer which I just replaced with the EVO. The older one worked fine as far as the internet goes. The computer is in my kids room and the ethernet cord gets unplugged alot to be used in an Xbox.I had the EVO hooked up for a few weeks and it worked fine but then just the other day it would no longer get online and i noticed the green light near where the cord plugs in would not light anymore. i assumed maybe all of the plugging and unplugging might have damaged the connectors. The cord still works fine in the Xbox. So I took the card out of the older Compaq and put it in the EVO. The original one on the EVO was built in so i could not remove it.When I turned on the computer it said new hardware found..installed the drivers..says its working properly but I get a server not found when I open my browser. Also I just noticed that the green light on this card stays on even when no ethernet cord is plugged in. I have installed cards before and after the drivers were installed it always just worked. Thanks for any help ScottHave you restart your router?Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 07, 2008, 05:30:03 AM Bring up a command prompt and enter the command "ipconfig". Solve : Replacing a Server 2000 Domain Controller with a Server 2003 one? |
Answer» I'm trying to replace the entire Windows 2000 Server with a new 2003 version. The problem I'm having is that I NEED to have all the profiles that are on all the workstations LOG into this new server as if it was the old one. Can I do this by simply configuring the server 2003 with the same settings as the old one? (IP numbers, etc) I'd hate to have to go to all the workstations & re-setup local setting like their email and so forth, this is just a basic setup and I'm not looking to use roaming profiles. I just need to fool all the workstations into thinking they are logging into the same old domain. How can this be done? Thanks. I'm not as familiar with setting up new servers, but I think you can migrate all the settings from 2000 to 2003. |

Solve : Really Slow internet!!!!!!? |
Answer» hi all i have been having some problems with my INTERNET...lately it has been really slow.....its take ages to load youtube videos and when i play on-line games my ping reaches 350 easy...it got slow in the last couple of DAYS i haven't installed anything new and i scanned my computer for ad-ware and VIRUSES...i have a netgear modem which is connected to my computer via Ethernet cable..BTW my internet is not capped..Did you scan for viruses and malware in safe mode? i got this from the speed test:I wouldn't complain about that then at all. Possibly the speed problems are out there on the wider internet. In which case, there ain't a fat lot you can do about it.i know my internet isnt great but its has been slower the past couple of days....Keep going to the speedtest page, particularly when the connection is slow, and see if you get different results.ok thankshey i just ran the speed test again and i got only 3990 download and 285 upload hi all i would just like to say that the problem fixed itself my internet is fast again.....well fast enough lol thanks for everyones help i really appreciate it Great. The variation in download speed is tiny - and the variation in upload speed should hardly affect your browsing experience at all. |

Solve : Voip for wireless broadband?? |
Answer» I have been playing arround with Voip, trying to cut costs of phone bill. Yes I can get Vonage & packet 8 to work, but it's like using insect repellant; some work better then others but still is only effective for so long. I have a fairly good PROVIDER according to diognostic tests. I understand some of the issues with WIRELESS. Is there anyone else that has any experience with wireless Broadband and voip that may give me some input as to which voip provider is best or if there is another way (System) to make phone calls that would be some what reliable and affordable. I've been using Yahoo Messenger's PC-to-phone service and it's WORKED fairly good for me. I've used it from a tower PC running Win XP and connected to my router by cable and recently have used it from a Notebook PC running WINDOWS Vista and connecting to my router by wireless connection. This is only costing me 1 cent/min. for long distance calls in the U.S. Is your IP server wireless?I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. I use my DSL service, using the DSL modem provided by them and my D-Link DI-524 wireless router, the same hardware and ISP I was using before I started using Yahoo Voice. Quote Am I safe to assume that a mic is all I need?Yes, if using your computer speakers for listening to incoming is OK with you. That's what I do, even though I do have a headpiece that hangs on my ear and could be used for both outgoing and incoming voice. But, to hear the incoming voice on it, I need to disconnect my computer speakers and connect one of the two cords on the headpiece to the speaker jack on my sound card. That's a nuisance, so I just use the regular speakers to listen to incoming voice. With my tower PC, I do have to keep a distance of 2 1/2 to 3 ft between speakers and headpiece in order to avoid picking up incoming voice in the headpiece and sending annoying feedback back to the other party. I'm sure this has nothing to do with Yahoo Voice; it would be the same with any VoIP service. I actually find my Notebook PC to work better in this respect. The mic can be much closer to the built-in speakers on the Notebook and still not pick up incoming voice. But, I should mention I'm using using a different brand/type of mic on each computer, so that might be a factor, too.I've been busy with Xmas season and haven't checked post till now. Wireless connection, meaning that I have wireless microwave IP server (antenna) not DSL Or Cable I am completely wireless to my server. Simulare to sattlelight but microwave with far less latency I connect at 512 kbs download and over 200kbs upload. This is why I have the problems that I do. I have been using yahoo PC phone since this post it costs $.01 per minute, pay as you use. That's pretty good and I have had no problems as of yet but I must admitte my impatiance with Vonage and Packet 8 has led me to get my land line hooked back up. But I have yahoo for a back up, so far no complaints. Thanks for your responce.Soybean mentioned Skype - I've used this in several locations over wireless connections, via latop, PC (with webcam) and via my wifi-enabled PDA/phone. I've been extremely impressed in all cases. Having said that, I've only made Skype-to-Skype calls. But then, such calls are completely free! (Spoke to friends in Brazil over Skype with webcam on Christmas day. Fantastic!) |
