Solve : how to move internet connection away from phone jack?

Answer»

Is there any way to move the main desktop computer away from phone jack. I currently have a wireless modem that connects my LAPTOP to the modem by the desktop. Now I would like to move my desk and computer to a location that doesn't have a phone jack handy... and I really don't WANT my husband to drill holes in my floor to run a phone line. Please HELP.
Thanks SonieI'm not so sure, but I don't think there is any other way other than running a wire to the computer, UNLESS you want to put the wireless modem at the phone jack and add a wireless card into the desktop.

You also don't have to drill a hole. I have a 20M INTERNET cable running from the router in the computer room to my room. Not sure exactly how to explain it, but the cable runs through a tube across the top.

Solve : Unstable Connection. Please Help.?

Answer»

Hey ,

My connection seems to be running extremely slow on the web and on online games , im CONSTANTLY pinging out of games , with pings of around 300- 5000 , i usually get extremely low pings , but for some reason there getting very high and i don't KNOW whats causing it

My connection is wired , i use a extension from my BT socket , to the living room , and i then apply the PHONE FILTER to the phone line , and plug the dsl cables in .

Its pointless phoning my ISP , cause none of them can understand me and hardly speak English ...

They DONT even know what ping is Heya Rex

Does this happen to all online games?

Is anything else affected?

Also, is this a recent development?

Solve : My head hurts!?

Answer»

OK.. I have a new office in my garden and my wireless Netgear Router in connected in the house to a desktop. FIRSTLY Ive just learnt that it doesn't need to be connected to ANYTHING, right?

So I plan to plug my router into the main phone ENTRY which is at the FRONT of the house and about 70ft away from my office. How can I achieve the best signal out there, if at all? and will that be OK for a signal upstairs for the laptops?

Could someone also confirm what a desk top computer and Laptop need to have in order to receive a wifi connection from the router?

Thanks so much.

Solve : Network Security?

Answer»

In our house, we have 3 desktop PCs connected with ethernet, 1 xbox 360 connected with ethernet, and 1 wireless connected PC.

Our setup is like this:

Earthlink Netopia UHP/ADSL Modem > SMC 7008ABR > PCs & 802.11b WAP.

Our problem is with security. Microsoft's / Bungie's network isn't secure. Bad xbox players can use a program to sniff out other player's IP addresses, and every now and then my brother will beat someone with an anger problem, then they will DoS us and our PPPOE light will go off. It effects everyone using the Internet.

I'm looking for a new router (or some other device) that's reasonably priced and has advanced security features. Perhaps something where I can filter out what they are sending us or ban their IP on the router level since you can't INSTALL a software firewall on an xbox. It will REPLACE the old router and our outdated Wireless Access Point.

Also, I know for a fact that wireless Internet is completely unsecure. WEP, WPA, and the others can be cracked in about 2 hours using a Linux based hacking CD. (No installation needed). I'm not sure what I can do to protect our network from that.Quote from: Bub5000 on September 24, 2008, 03:37:50 PM

I don't know much about the Xbox situation- but I know this- although it's seems to be suppositioned otherwise, a DoS attack can only be performed against a server. Essentially it clogs up the server with requests, causing legitimate clients to time out. When performed against a single other computer (or router) it does- barely anything. Unless of course they've managed to launch a Distributed Denial Of Service, which is unlikely.

unless the target is using Dial-Up, the Ping command is NOT sufficient to deny you access to your internet. Something else is likely the cause of your service disruptions.

As for your Wireless networking concerns- unless you have neighbors whom you know have advanced cracking skills, it really isn't a concern- in fact, in most neighborhoods, simply not broadcasting your SSID is enough to prevent would-be leechers.

However, if your concerned, it is possible, through the router's setup pages, to enter the MAC ID's of all the computers whom you wish to allow, denying all others access. Combine this with WEP/WPA and a hidden SSID, and your network should be secure.

The only way in that circumstance for a HACKER to gain access would be to actually monitor the traffic between your PCs and Router, manage to somehow turn the jumble of random packets into intelligible DATA, determine and impersonate the Mac ID of one of your PCs, Crack the Key of your network, and connect.

Problem being of course, that you'll know- the computer whose Mac ID they duplicated would then likely lose all connectivity.

In the instance your sure that they (or someone) is denying you service,(as that which I've described before could be dead-wrong) it's possible to enable a incoming and outgoing log on most Routers. by doing so, you can thus examine the incoming log immediately after a suspected attack, and change the routers configuration to drop all packets from the IP address listed.
There is a possibility that it is a DDOS attack. There are videos on youtube advertising "Halo 3 booters", but they are copies of the client, infected with the server.

I'd like to get to the bottom of what's causing our PPPoE light to randomly go off. Most of the time it works perfectly, then all of a sudden the light will go off, then it will reconnect, stay connected for a few seconds go off again, then after a couple of times power cycling the modem, it will finally fix itself.

Quite simply:

I suppose, or recon so, this is because I plugged an ethernet cable into the PC (somehow it might of thought my 360 was some sort of wireless device maybe...)

Anyway i rang my ISP they said hardwire it, but it's simpossible due to my house structure.

All i know is when I click on the "status" of my wireless connection it IS FULLY CONNECTED HOWEVER it has NO DNS or DHCP settings, which I cannot obtain

ipconfig on cmd doesnt work. nor I cannot go to router settings (i.e 192.168.x.x)

Hi all,

I have local n:1 client-server communication. It's running sometime OK and then HANGS. The same byte-type messages are SENT. FLUSH() is applied after writeByte() method. DataInputStream is used.

One SIDE (server) has sent a request, another one hasn't got it. Why can this happens? OR How can I find it? The method which sends requests is synchronized.

Thanks beforehand,

Solve : Remote access to my home network?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a home network: 1 PC running Win XP Pro SP2, 1 Sony Vaio notebook running Win XP Pro SP2, 1 Acer Aspire notebook running Win Vista Home Premium, 1 MacBook running OS X 10.4 All this connected via a Belkin wireless router.

I have one more Acer Aspire notebook which I will use on the road and I want to be able to access my home network to share DATA, ETC. and for my desktop PC to access data on the roaming Acer. How can I do that ? Does it mean I need a VPN ? I tried reading about OpenVPN but was completely bamboozled by jargon. If a VPN is the only way to do this, then can someone please explain how to do it in simple terms and words of very few syllables ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give and please EXCUSE if this has been covered before and I have been unable to find a suitable thread.

Try log me in, when i used it last, it did all the stuff you want it to do.... very nice... and easy to use...Thanks COHEN, a quick try of Logmein seems to work well. That could be my easy solution.
Thanks for your help.

Solve : firewall?

Answer»

Let's say my PC has been infected with a keylogger/malware. Will my firewall- Codomo firewall pro be able to stop it from PHONING HOME? Thanks.Possibly.

Quick question....something that crossed my mind.
You said 'Let's say my PC.....' by saying 'Let's Say', it is implying you are talking about a hypothetical situation. However, in this context, it can mean the following;
'If I download a keylogger/malware, can it send me the data even if comodo firewall is installed.'

If this is so, I wonder who the victim is.....
If i'm WRONG, don't blame me. It's late here.

I'm just switched from ZoneAlarm free to Codomo, How do I see which programs have access to the internet. Codomo doesn't seem to show this INFO. Thanks. It sure does...

Solve : D-Link DL-514 - options??

Answer»

I posted a query other day but no replies.

Situation is ........ recent upgrade from Direcway 6000 modem to new Hughes net HN7000s. On old set up had, IIRC the router set to 192.168.0.2 - as the modem has that ever common 192.168.0.1 - this gave good results with computer lan cord going into WAN skt of router and distribution then to main COMP and backup - all was fine.

Following the new set up router is blocking data - no good. Having to feed the main puter only direct via the ethernet link to modem.

Main problem however is, having reset the router - it is back to 192.168.0.1 and I want to change the IP again but - when I bring that IP up in browser i get the username /password deal request for router.

Hmmm - username no probs as that was email ADDY but - danged if I recall the password.!!!! Even power off and back on - no dice - it still wants password! Have tried examples of what I could have USED (THREE plus years ago!) but no luck so far.

Any bright ideas?Ok - got thru that hurdle - using a simple ''admin'' and blank p'word .. per the manual.! Should have thought of that!

However - thus far no changes to static IP have helped ... seems the puter ''remembers'' the old 192.168.0.2 - but tried 0.3 and 0.5 and no dice.

Anyone good at setting this darned thing up? The so called ''wizard'' fails miserably.

Solve : OpenVPN?

Answer»

Hello
I connect to the internet through an open WiFi connection.

1. I've installed the latest VERSION of OpenVPN on Vista. I've have not configured it in anyway and it just sits at my taskbar. I've set openVPN as RUN with administrator's RIGHTS. How can I know that the program is working?

2. When installing openVPN, a "would you like to install this device software?" dialog box appears with the FOLLOWING:
Name: TAP_WIn32 Provider V9 Network Adapters
Publisher: OpenVPN, Inc.
Should I install this device?

3. I downloaded the openvpn from its official website. Is it safe to ASSUME the program installer has not been tampered with?
Thank you very much.

Solve : remote enable of disabled network connection?

Answer»

My question is: how hard would it be?
I have a CLOSED network and NEED a temporary internet connection to download virus defs for about 5 minutes. I'm considering plugging the second NIC of a SERVER into the internet and having a batch file enable and disable the connection (with ipconfig) to do the download. My first thoughts are that it would be pretty tough to remotely enable (or otherwise HACK) a disabled connection, but wanted to hear from another source.

Solve : dial up slow page loads?

Answer»

i have a internet dial up that is free for my state of washington and the pages take a long time to load what can i do to get the pages loaded FASTER i have windows xp Dial up internet connections are limited to a real max of 50 kbps or so. The only way to improve this is to select a broadband option, e.g., cable or DSL.

To improve the loading (speed up the loading) of web pages, there are several services that compress data that work very well, in my experience. These services won't affect download speed but will reduce the amount of data downloaded. In other words, they won't decrease the download time of a file from the internet but will speed up the loading of web pages.

For more info, look here: http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/internet101/a/fasterdialup.htm

Best of luck.if i had that kind of money then i would not have to have free internet Search online for "dial up accelerators."are they free Put 'free' in your search. I don't know of any. This PAGE is a pretty good resource.the page is for netzero which costs money also the reply that says they don't know of any accelerators should not answer my post if they can not help thanks Regardless of whatever Dial-up accelerators you install, it's STILL dial-up, and still limited to the 46kbps(or whatever it is) FCC limit set on data TRANSMISSION through phone lines.

Quote from: tmm5899 on September 24, 2008, 09:34:36 AM

the page is for netzero which costs money ...

No, the first entry on the page lists Netzero -- but if you scroll down, you will FIND several other options, several of which ARE free.

And if you still don't have any luck after that, you might have to live with it. It's free. You get what you PAY for. (well, except in this case, where you get more then you pay for.)okay so which one do i download and run on my computer any suggestions i don't want a virusI posted the page I did in order to give you some overall information about dial up. The Ashampoo software further down the page is only free for TEN days. The Speed Guide software can be downloaded HERE. It looks like Speed Guide will let you change settings on your computer to help data move more efficiently.

I used a dial up accelerator a number of years ago. I don't remember which one it was. It was not free, but cost about thirty dollars for the year.

I wish more web pages gave the option of downloading text only.

Solve : Network questions?

Answer»

Hi,

I need some help in describing a network infrastructure. I don't know how to use linux commands(dig, host, traceroute, nsmap, ping) to get the answers to these questions:

1. Identify subnets and network parameters for each subnet.
2. Identify wireless networks.
3. Identify important hosts on the network and the services they provide. Identify their OS type. In particular, find the DNS servers. Which of them is the primary server and whose are SECONDARY?
4. Describe how e-mail is handled.
5. How is the print service handled?
6. How is disk shared between hosts?
7. Identify the main routers for outgoing traffic from subnets a the domain to the world outside.

If SOMEONE have som clues as to how to answer these questions, please share...

Majorn
Majorn, this is a homework assignment, right? I think you should head over to the library and do some research, and learn how to do Internet searches so that you can find this info yourself.Ok... Thanks for a constructive reply, soybean! Appreciate you taking the time to share your view on things...

I'll go on down to the library and learn.. Do you really think that I plan to get my assignment written for me on the internet? Man....

But there must be someone who can help me in the use of Linux-commands? I know which commands I'm supposed to use, and I've read about it on the internet, but what I don't get, and what's not on the internet is how to read and understand the output from different commands.

Thanks anyway....

Solve : High Speed Internet?

Answer»

I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this?

(a) I've read that; Broadband is often called "high-speed" access to the Internet, because it usually has a high rate of data transmission. In general, any connection to the customer of 256 kbit/s (0.256 Mbit/s) or greater is more concisely considered broadband Internet access.
(b) I've also read somewhere that you must have transfer rates above 256 Kbps to qualify for "High Speed",and (c) "Basic Broadband" data transmission speeds in either direction in excess of 768 Kbps.

When checking my speeds (different times of the day etc.) I' feel that I'm averaging approx. 0.91Mbps(112.5 Kb/sec) transfer rate -- download / and approx. 0.24 Mbps (30.4 Kb/sec) transfer rate --upload

Now I know that I receive "Broadband Internet Access",but would this be considered "High Speed"? Because if so, it ain't very speedy.
There is no strict definition of any of those terms, and even the loose definitions of those terms steadily change over time.

Once upon a time 256 Kb was considered high speed and marketed as such. I've even got some old National Geographic magizines that advertise 1200 baud modems as high speed, and at the time it was.

And as fiber gets closer and closer to most homes, and even directly into some homes, the definition of high speed will continue to change and increase. Thanks for that .rthompson80819 There has been CONCERN that companies who advertise there service as 'High-Speed' must meet some standards of performance.
From the FCC:
http://www.fcc.gov/broadband/

Or did you mean 'Sigh-Speed' ?
Thanks Geek-9pm. Well I hope that they come out with some definite numbers. And, if and when they do, hopefully that REQUIREMENT spills over into Canada.Do you have access to cable or DSL? In some areas wireless has a lot of issues.

Ideally, wireless needs line of sight from the transmitter to the receiving antenna, although it can work sometimes without perfect line of sight.No,rthompson80819 unfortunately not. I live in a rural area and we've been trying for a very long time to get Cable or DSL but to no avail. It's all around us and that's what's annoying. So it's either Broadband or back to Dial-up . and, Broadband is not much more expensive than Dial-up so at least what I have is the better of two evils. In the US, the government is starting to spend money on expanding broadband into rural areas, although as I understand it, the government is first concentrating on areas that only have dial up.

Hopefully, Canada will do the same if they aren't already.Actually when broadband was finally available in this area we were all quite excited. But now, with those all around us receiving Cable and/or DSL, we're kinda feeling the way we did when we were on Dial-up. I suppose ONE is NEVER satisfied? No, we are never usually never satisfied with the speed of our computers or the internet.

Actually, the majority of cable and DSL customers have about the same speed as you do, and many of the ones who have faster speeds are probably paying a lot more than you are. That actually made me feel a lot better.Thks. But some, who are on Cable (and their costs are not that much higher than mine) tell me that they are getting terrific speeds. Mind you there are others(my kids come to mind) who change back and forth from one ISP to another when their speeds are not to their liking.
So you're right, I guess speeds are never fast enough.Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 10, 2010, 03:55:23 PM

Commerce Dept. investment to expand broadband access in Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas
April 18, 2010

APRIL 19, 2010 -- The Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act $28.6 million grant to increase broadband access and adoption by FUNDING the build-out and deployment of more than 680 miles of a new fiber-optic network in 35 communities in portions of Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The project intends to connect more than 70 community anchor institutions--including city halls, police stations, fire stations, libraries, schools, and a hospital--directly to the broadband network.

With this grant, Allegiance Communications plans to deploy broadband technology to an estimated 12,700 households and 230 businesses in the four-state region. It will be the first time wireline broadband service faster than dial-up is offered in most of the affected communities. Allegiance also plans to upgrade communications for public-safety organizations to improve storm warning systems and first responder efforts.

NTIA’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), funded by the Recovery Act, provides grants to support the deployment of broadband infrastructure, enhance, and expand public computer centers, and encourage sustainable adoption of broadband service.

Solve : Wireless connection no internet access??

Answer»

Hi, I have an hp laptop(g60 series) running windows 7 and I have major problems with my internet connection. It started two weeks ago, and I called my internet service provider which directed me to the HP line, but they didn't help at all. Finally my sister played around with the plugs(the wireless/router) and it worked for a day. But it doesn't work anymore..? I don't know what the problem is. I turned off the router/wireless box and waited then switched it BACK on, I also plug things and out. And I tried PLUGGING the cord into my laptop but I can't get the internet there either...?

When I called HP they said I probably have a virus, and something was wrong with my IP address. But I ran scans and my computer is running normally. I also have norton anti virus. I know i'm rambling, but I really need help. I already called/turned it off and on...everything that's suppose to help it. Should I take it into geeksquad? IDK, what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.Bypass your router and connect your cable/DSL directly into your computer to see if your Internet is working (warning - you will be directly connected to the Internet so ensure your firewall is enabled and DONT leave it this way too long).

If it doesn't work that way, CONTACT your ISP again.

Solve : Excellent wireless signal but can't hold the internet connection?

Answer»

Yesterday my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop wireless connection started acting up. I am having problems connecting to our wireless network. The wireless router is only 1 room away and the signal only has to go through 1 wall to get to my laptop. I have been using this setup for over a year now and I've never had any problems whatsoever until suddenly last night I couldn't connect easily and when I did the connection wasn't working properly.

When I view available wireless networks, it finds mine along with everyone else's wireless network in the area. So at least my wireless card is partially working. I get full signal strength for my network, and it reads my wireless network as excellent signal strength. When I try to connect to my network either one of the following 3 things happens:

1)unable to connect
2)connect with local access only
or
3)connect to the internet for about a MIN, loading any website is painstakingly slow like dialup, and then a DISCONNECT after about a minute.

I have tried rebooting my computer many times, rebooted the router twice, a system restore from a restore point last week when it was working, went to Dell's website and downloaded/installed updated drivers for my wireless card, and yes the wireless switch is on (tried enabling and disabling that switch several times too). I have 2 other computers in the same room as my laptop that can connect to my wireless network just fine and they do not have any problems so I do not think this is a problem on the router's end....

Now here's the kicker, when I move my laptop into the same room as the router, and have my laptop like 3 feet from the router, the problem seems to get a little better. I get fewer unable to connect messages (still get them though, but after MULTIPLE tries I can connect), and when I do connect, my connection speed is faster and I am able to stay connected longer. But after about 5 mins I get booted off and have to reestablish my connection again.

I have a Dell Insprion 1525 with windows vista and I'm using the original wireless network card that came with it. We have ATT DSL and no problems with the wireless network with any of our other computers.

My best guess is that the wireless card on my laptop is going out. Its only 2 years OLD and hasn't had any ABUSE, but I guess these things happen.

Does anyone have any suggestions that I could try before I go out and buy another wireless card? I've read from other sources that I could try flushing the DNS but no idea how to do that...

Thanks for any help!I wouldn't think flushing the DNS would help too much.

This is all that comes to mind:

1) Try a static IP address so you don't have to rely on your router for a DHCP lease. (There should be a DHCP range listed in the router's web interface - just pick an IP outside that range and use the same subnet mask, gateway IP, and DNS IPs that you get when you are setup for automatic IP detection (use "ipconfig /all" to get this information before making the change). Take a look at http://www.trainsignaltraining.com/windows-vista-ip-addressing/2006-11-15/ and http://portforward.com/networking/static-vista.htm

2) run pings to your router so your can see what is occurring in real time. The router's IP is the gateway IP from the "ipconfig /all" command. Open a DOS window (Start > Accessories > Command Prompt) and run "ping -t 192.168.1.1" where "192.168.1.1" is the IP address of your router/gateway. This will start a continual ping to your router - use "Ctrl+C" to stop it. You should be "Reply From" lines, when you see "Request timed out" then you have packet loss between your PC and the router.

Solve : Internet randomly stops sending and receiving packets!?

Answer»

so recently my computer started this problem basically i will be downloading music or heavy youtube surfing and my internet "locks up" and SLOWS to either a crawl or nothing at all, but it only does it after a while. if i restart my computer it goes back to normal and resets everything.

it does this both for ethernet connection and wifi

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Do you have both your WIRED connection and the wireless connection RUNNING at the same time on the same network? What ISP provider do u have? The reason I am asking is there was a Supreme Court decision recently that gave the ISP provider the right to slow down your internet connection. Comcast was the winner, we (consumer) were the loser. well the wired is GRANDE, and the wifi is what ever my NEIGHBOR has XD haha

Solve : Cannot Access My Router Management Console?

Answer»

I can't access my router management console by typing the IP address into the browser. I have a Linksys basic 100Mbps home router (not wireless) nothing fancy.

I have done an ipconfig /all and the address for the default gateway is the address that I assigned my router.

I am also able to successfully ping the router.

Good link. Hope he reads it.
Perhaps he needs to be told the router and gateway must be different IPs. Unless the router is the gateway. But the Links is not a gateway. His modem is the gateway for his home network. Both should have IPs in the same block.Network Topology from top to bottom

I should add that at one point I was able to access this router fine. I did the original configuration on it.Way are you using two routers?
In my system the first router the ties to outside world has to be the gateway. The second router has to be 'dumb' and not try to handle stuff.
Like this:
Code: [Select]Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\>ipconfig
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : gateway.2wire.net
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.68
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

But the IP of the second router is
http://192.168.1.50
Which I set it its console. That way I can also get to the first router.

Are you trying to get the Linksys router to connect to the AT&T DSL Modem/router? If yes, you must go to the AT&T Modem/router and allow access of the Linksys to the Modem. You do this from a computer connected to the AT&T, and the Linksys connected and on.I did not do the original design of the network. This is a small business with 12 workgroup terminals. The entire network has been run with static IP. The linksys router is not set up to hand out addresses(DHCP). The network runs fine and I do have internet access. I know that with the exception of a couple of terminals (network printers, application server) that the network should probably be run with dynamic IP. I really have a hard time explaining this to the owner. It has been run this way for so long he doesn't understand the change.

We recently switched from Windstream To AT&T, again not my decision, and I had the privilege of overseeing the process. When this happened AT&T installed their router/modem and to keep my network addressing the same I put my router in behind it. This worked fine a was able to access the Linksys management console to cinfigure the IP addresses for the gateway and DNS servers. Even now, the network runs fine, however I cant access the control panel of my router. I have had this problem before but it was always due to the nodes being on different networks. That is not the case here.Quote from: SmittySr on May 12, 2010, 06:04:25 AM

Nothing wrong with putting the Linksys behind the AT&T. I configured a small network just like yours, but all is DHCP. Linksys wired routers are always http://192.168.1.1/index.htm, unless the Linksys Local IP has been changed. Do a "hard reset" of the Linksys. http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-a-Linksys-RouterThe router IP and USERNAME and password have been changed from their default. I am pretty sure that I have backed up my router config, I will have to look.

I really HATE to take the system down to do a hard reset of the router. Any other thoughts on why I can't get in? As I said before I have checked and double checked to make sure that the router an d clients are on the same network and have tried to access the console from SEVERAL different terminals with no success.

I paused just now to ping the gateway again and 4 received, 0 lost. Can Linksys routers web management stuff be put on a different port?

It might be worth trying something like http://192.168.1.1:8080 or http://192.168.1.1:8081 or http://192.168.1.1:81.

Those are all common ports used, but in no way exhaustive.

That said, I've not messed with a Linksys router for a while, most of the stuff I touch happens to be Netgear.Quote from: SmittySr on May 14, 2010, 08:18:31 AM

Solve : Portforward?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently discovered HideMyAss Pro VPN. Its not the VPN im interested in, Its the unique feature inside. It can open all ports, Meaning i do not need to Portforward (If im correct).

Does anyone here know:

1) A free program that opens all ports, Without making it "in use" so other apps cant use it.
2) If it replaces the need of portforwarding your router - If not, What can i do to not need to portforward?

RegardsIf you're trying to do something that needs ALL ports forwarded, why not just forward all the ports from your router? It's really EASY.

If the ports aren't open on your router, there isn't any software to open them from your PC. That's done from the router.

I feel LIKE you cold benefit from enabling DMZ for your computer through your router.Quote from: TechGeek on May 16, 2010, 07:54:42 AM

Hey,

Thank you for choosing to help,
Well, For some reason, Ports wont work. I need to do a game, Which works with HAMACHI, Which open ports, But i dont want hamachi, I did all the P/F in the router settings. What now?

Also whats DMZ?

RegardsWell most home configurations have a router and a modem. Make sure your modem (like a DSL or Cable modem) forwards to your router's IP, and then your router forwards to your computer.

DMZ puts your computer outside the NAT firewall, so it's like it's directly on the internet because the router won't FILTER traffic to this computer. You can read more about it here: http://hoople_ny.tripod.com/dmz.html It's really easy to set up through your router config page.

Solve : Lost IP address?

Answer»
My Dads computer does not connect to the internet (this is after 4 years of steady connection to the same ISP). After haveing technitions out to his house to replace cables and modem he was told it was his computer. I have lent him an old computer which connects fine, making me think that its was the original computer (oh yeah, tiny pc, windows xp, cable connection). I've brought his computer home and re-installed the network drivers and the PC works fine at my house when connected to broadband with an ethernet cable, but when the PC GOES back to his house its does not connect. He has talked to his ISP, since, and they have told him that they have 'lost' his IP address. Has anyone ever heard of this before. I'm at a loss as it goes way past my understanding!!

Any help Definitely sounds fishy. One thing you didn't say was whether or not it worked at your house prior to reinstalling the drivers for it. Although it is possible to "lose the ip" it isn't an excuse for the internet not working on the pc. Most isps assign dynamic ip addresses so it means you never have the same ip all the time. It changes. So technically you can "lose it". Some give you static ips so it's the same ip all the time. Even if SOMEHOW they managed to lose this ip you would get assigned another one. But as I said earlier, it's no excuse for the internet not working permanently. If you've proven that the pc connects to the net fine in you house than it's obviously the line at your dad's house, the cable modem, the jack at the wall or some other cable related thing. You've isolated that it's not the pc. Hopefully your dad has that "protection plan" that costs like 3-7$ a MONTH and any tech visits aren't billed. If he doesn't you can definitely still order it. So I would call the isp again and have them come out to test the lines and try to get your dad's pc connected to the net again. Good luck.Well the weird thing is that the PC worked when i brought it to my house, then stopped working and the network drivers had an exclaimation mark so i re-installed them. Also the network drivers were not installed on the machine, because at first i was going to 'rollback', but it said that they were not on the machine. I know this sounds strange, but.... Anyway after re-installing the drivers it worked, no problem, until i took it back to my dads house, then nothing. (but the drivers are OK)

I have also tried configuring a static ip. When i do this, it states (in network connections) that it is connected, but it still does not get the internet.

A tech has already been to the house and replaced all cables and modem. Luckily we live in England and this is free, but now they have said that they are going to send some by post and my dad has to ring them and they will talk him through connecting. (This is free also and so is the call).

It's just so weird, this is the 4th time he has called them and no-one is able to connect him. The first 3 people said it was his PC.

So, if they have 'lost' his IP address will that PC ever be able to connect. Like i say, my old one connects at his house and the 'troubled' PC works at mine. If he buys a new PC, will it connect?? If he changes his ISP will the 'troubled' PC connect???Cheers to England for having free tech support for cable although they don't seem to be that good, .

As to not being able to "roll back" the driver that is because there wasn't a previous version of the driver installed. There definitely was a driver for it or it would have never worked to begin with. If you have driver 1 and then you install driver 2 now you can "roll back" to driver 1 if you don't like driver 2. But you can't roll back from driver 1 to nothing. Get it?

As for you configuring a static ip that really has nothing to do with the internet. You are just configuring a private ip for the pc to be able to talk to other pcs in the home network. If you configured it correctly then it will say connected because it is connected properly to the home network. Unfortunately it saying "connected" does not necessarily mean connected to the internet, just the network.

Well after reading your previous post and your update I came to the conclusion that perhaps it is that particular pc. Since if it was the cable connections or modem the other used pc wouldn't work either. Perhaps your dad was mistreating it and it decided to act up so it could be taken away from him, lol. It is a good mystery. Unfortunately things like these are hard to diagnose remotely. Have you tried adding a different nic CARD to the pc?
I think installing another nic is the best option, I'm going to get one from ebay, i've checked and they are only £5 ish (no replies saying ebay cant be trusted, been using it for 5 years, not one problem).

This seem like the only way to go, maybe the built-in ethernet connector has failed.

P.S. My dads friend bought her laptop to his house and that would not connect. He plugged his original PC in and that would not connect, then he plugged in MY old PC and it connects fine. My hair is starting to fall out with constant scratching of head. Does your used pc have a buitin or addin nic? If addin then try removing it from the pc to your dad's pc and see if it will work prior to purchasing an extra nic. Oh make sure to disable the builtin nic in the bios.

I have no quarrel with ebay but just online shopping in general. Although some times you can find things cheaper online by the time you add shipping & handling it comes out close to the price of a brick & mortar store. So if it's almost the same price why not buy it at a store instead of waiting for it to come to you? Quarrel ended.

This scenario is definitely weird! I have no idea why the laptop would not connect unless she was trying to connect it with a cable rather than wireless like she usually does and her wired connection is disabled? For giggles have you tried taking his pc back to your house to see if it still connects fine?
Pc is coming back to my house tomorrow, will keep you informed
Installed a new NIC and everything now works fine!!

Thanks for you help!!Glad it worked. No more pulling your hair out. Quote from: reddevilggg on April 26, 2010, 02:24:28 AM

Solve : Ping Test - Modem Problem??

Answer»

Hey guys. I was being disconnected a lot from my network (wireless) but I just bought a brand new netgear router that's top of the line, so I thought it was my modem.

I ran a ping test in the cmd window using ping -t www.google.com and found that I was getting the "request time out" about ONE out of every 20 or 30 times, sometimes up to four of them in a row. Is this my modem? Any help appreciated.

P.S. I currently have a Motorola SURFboard SB5120 that I bought about two years ago. Recently it has been weird and not starting the network up, just the power lights, however this problem has been going on for quite some time.It LOOKS like modem problem. Can you run a temporary patch cable directly from your new router to the PC? If the reslults are the same hard wired to the router, then I'd say it the modem. What is that? Do I connect the router straight to the cpu with the modem?yeah, When I said patch cord, I'm referring to a cat 5, cat 5E, or cat 6 cable with RJ45 ends. It's a cable that looks just like the one you prolly have going from the modem to the router. Yes, run the extra patch cable from a port on the router to the laptop or PC. If the problem stays then it's most likely not your wireless or your router, which points to the modem. If the probelm goes away, it maybe the wireless not functioning correctly.oh yeah I've done that and the internet stills goes in and out. i'm going to get a new modem but what if the problem continues? any other ideas?Possible a bad router, If you want to rule out the router, PLUG the patch cable from the router directly to the PC. If it still does it, then you have it narrowed down to a bad modem. "As long as you know you patch cables are good"I test the ping test here http://www.whoisxy.com/ and also i got the whois information, domain to ip,ip to domain,etc....

Regards and please help me.you should get a router if you WANTED to get share your one internet on three computers. but hopefully someone can get you on your way with your switcherThank you.I DONT have money right now for routerAnother option would be to install a second network card in one computer and enable internet connection sharing. Plug the internet connection into one network port and the other port into the switch, which the other computers will also be plugged into.
Network cards are pretty cheap to buy and it's supposed to be pretty easy to set up internet connection sharing on Windows (I've never done it myself).

Solve : Problem with broadband?

Here's the thing, i can be busy going about my business on Facebook and when i refresh the page i sometimes get an error message from google chrome saying "Oops! Google Chrome could not find www.facebook.com". (It's happening right now infact)
At first i thought this was a facebook problem until i tried to access the DELL website and recieved the same error message.
I haven't found any other sites this HAPPENS with, it could be random.

Sorry for the wording of the question.

Can anyone help me please?

Edit: I have just found this happens with Paypal.com as wellSounds like a DNS error to me.

Set up your computer (Or router if you can) to use an alternate FREE DNS.

I would recommend Google's DNS: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html or OpenDNS http://www.opendns.com/

Both are free, both are fast, both are very easy to set up, and both should fix your problem. It's just a simple IP change in a FILED on your computer or router.Hey Joe, who is your ISP and how do you connect? Cable, DSL. etc.I'm with TalkTalk. How would i change the DNS servers STUFF on windows 7? I'm going to try the google one.
ThanksQuote from: JoeNeedsHelp on May 17, 2010, 03:38:11 PM
whats a DSL?

DSL internet comes over the phone line. TalkTalk is a UK DSL internet provider.

First I would phone Talktalk tech support.

Oh right, thanks. I'll ring them asap
Thanks againTo be fair, I'd make the changes to use OpenDNS anyway.

I had loads of minor problems with Virgin Broadband (not cable), and since then I've only used OpenDNS at home.

The way I see it, I'd rather rely on someone who's sole purpose is to provide DNS to do so for me, instead of my ISP.

The "add ons" that OpenDNS offer are also pretty cool.

Solve : need help please :D cant set password on router ..?

hi I'm a total noob ! and recently got virgin broadband and got the standard netgear router with it .. problem is when i use the 'wireless manager' it wont connect to my router so i cant name the network or set a password for i ..i can manually connect to my router and it says unsecured network so everyone in the whole street is probably connecting .. i rang virgin up (£1 a minute) ! and couldn't get a proper answer and eventually gave up .. any one help .?HELLO and Welcome!

I'm going to try my best to get you started. Please let me know if I'm giving you too much or too little. I hope we can help get you setup and going.

How can Virgin charge to help?

Can you please let us know the NetGear's model #? What is your operating system (Win XP/Vista/7)?

For most routers, its best to use the web configuration interface of the box for making changes.
You should do the initial configuration of the router via a wired connection. Some of the newer routers have setup software that tries to perform a wireless configuration but I'm not familiar with it, and the web interface is usually a lot easier to configure through and get help with.

We start by taking a computer and plugging it into the router and getting a IP assignment from it. We need to determine what your router's IP assignments are.

This is very general as I have little to go on - This will most likely differ.

Determine IP Info

Determine your IP assignment by start > (All) programs > Accessories > Command Prompt or Start -> (Run) -> cmd.exe
In the black window, type the command ipconfig /all
Try to locate your current IP address from the router (ex: 192.168.1.2, 192.168.0.100)
Under that your will see a gateway IP address (ex: 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

Access Router's Web Interface

Knowing your IP info, go to the web browser and type in the address http://192.168.1.1 where 192.168.1.1 is the Gateway IP found during the procedure above

You should be prompted for a user account. This should be provided in your documentation. An old thread found on google showed these username/password combos: root/root admin/password virgin/password

Setup Wireless Radio Config

Somewhere in your router's configuration panels, there should be a basic wireless page. You need to find what your SSID is. You will want to change this to your name for the network (ex: MyHome).

The channel should be set to auto. Depending on your neighborhood, you may want to try different setting to find a radio band that is clean. This is the radio frequency that will be USED for your network.

There should be a SSID Broadcast that you'll want to enable right now. This will basically announce your radio on the radio. Security being extremely strict, you'd shut this off and have manual SSID setups (lets not do this right now).

Test Wireless

Now you'll want to test your connection. Your laptop should now see your custom SSID. Now you can tell what network to connect to. Make sure the Internet works.

Let us know if you have issues connecting to the unsecured network.

Wireless Security

We've left this network Unsecure because we want to ensure that everything works. Now that we've ensured that the network is functional, we'll want to secure it down. In the router's configuration there should be a Basic Wireless Security page.

I need to know your OS to get this correct. Until then you can use WEP (128bit) to provide some security and get your NEIGHBORS off your connection. This will use a long HEX string that can be entered into the computers to gain network access. WEP will need to be changed if possible as it can be compromised by talented hackers.

WPA2 is where you'll want to get. Lets get you connected before we go that far.

Please let me know.If it was from Virgin it's probably a Netgear DG834GT v3 or 4.

At least that's what I got a while ago.

From memory it defaults to 192.168.0.1 and enables DHCP, so if you connect to the router using an ethernet cable (usually yellow in the box with the router) and open a web browser to http://192.168.0.1.

If the defaults are the same as mine were the user name should be Virgin, and the password is password, I think (it should be on the label on the bottom of the router ANYWAY).

The settings you're looking to change should be under something like Wireless Settings in the left hand pane.

If you've got any more questions, let us know.

I suggest minor REVISIONS of your post so that it makes more sense. Change 1: remove the period the first TWO sentences below and replace it with a comma. Change 2: Put why at the end of the LAST sentence where it belongs. How about this:?

When I run speed tests or try to get help for different problems, I keep getting told I have verizon. Does anyone know why? What site(s) are you using for speed testing? Are the results of your speed tests in line with what you believe should be the speed of your Internet connection?

Is Verizon your telephone service PROVIDER?Netzero is not a facilities based company like most PHONE or cable companies. More than likely, Netzero is leasing and reselling DSL service from Verizon, and that's why the speed tests are showing Verizon.

Netzero might be your home page, and the company that sends you the bill, but your getting service over Verizon lines.

i get it to work and works fine but when i turn it of the is when it changes and then i have to reset the router and all the settings as well as connections to get it to work again

Let me make sure I am understanding correctly.
You set up your connection and are connected to the internet using the router.
You turn the router off.

The cable from the wall that I use now...will....after I purchase a router... go firstly to the Cox Cable modem (provided by my local cable company..Cox)...then from there... a cable will connect to a router.... then from the router a signal (wireless) goes to a laptop (ready to go with wireless). The laptop may now receive the internet.... Now, with my TRUSTY new desktop.... is there still a cable from the same modem to my destop computer that enables me to receiver the internet?.. What I am trying to find out is if two computers in the same house ( one a laptop...Toshiba), ...the other my desktop, can receive the internet at the same time?
The second part of the question....and thanks for bearing with me.... if I make my desktop computer.. wi fi ... with a card (PCI) or USB adapter..... can both in house computers use the internet at the same time? Why would you want to use wireless on a desktop, you aren't moving it around. You will actually get better signal strength by using an ethernet cable. Thanks Quantos,,, Yes, I might be moving the laptops' location to another room ... so it will have to be wireless.
If my desktop in its new location is now wireless...USB or PCI card.... Does the laptop now have a choice of STAYING wireless or go cable (of course in the same room where the Cox Cable (motorola) modem is located)?
I am a newbie, so I do not know about Ethernet. Thanks, RonYes, you can use either, but why make the desktop wireless? If you plan on playing any on line games you will be terribly disappointed with the performance that you will get from wireless.Quote from: ront2 on May 18, 2010, 08:33:36 PM

That's the cable that currently goes from the cable modem to the desktop, unless you are using USB.Yes, what Quantos said is accurate. I would make the desktop a wired connection and it sounds like what you said would work. So just make the desktop wired and the laptop can use the wireless network. What kind of router do you have? Give detailed specs and model name/number please.

Solve : Sharing a 32-bit printer via wireless home network?

Answer»

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit OS. Now the 32-bit printer, Epson Stylus Photo 960, has no driver for 64-bit (thanks Epson!) In the past, my Windows XP TOWER PC was hosting this printer and sharing with a Win98 PC, a WinXP Laptop, and a Vista Laptop. Can I make this printer a wireless device on my home network and make it available to all OS platforms? How? Thanks for any help.No. Making it wireless isn't going to solve your problem of not having drivers for win7. drivenbywhat is correct.

64-bit Windows cannot use 32-bit print drivers. It can store them, but this is specifically for 32-bit Windows PCs that will connect to a shared printer hosted on a 64-bit OS. VICE versa applies as well (at least with Vista, Windows 7, Server 2003, and Server 2008): a 32-bit PC hosting a shared printer can store 64-bit drivers to INSTALL to 64-bit PCs connecting to that share.

So, all in all, until a 64-bit print driver is written for this printer (which doesn't seem likely to happen), you're kind of SOL on this one...Thanks all for reading my post and sharing your knowledge and advice. I sorta thought it couldn't be done but was hoping there could be AWAY AROUND. Oh well . . .Check and see what printer drivers on built-in for your 64 bit OS.
Some printers can run in emulation mode
Or check and see if the printer can be used with Post Script.
Either way, it would reduce the features of the printer.

EDIT [foot in mouth]Duh.. I am very wrong.[/foot in mouth]

Solve : Connect to Wireless Network w/ Batch?

Answer»

Is there any way to connect to a wireless network with batch? Deepfreeze PREVENTS any settings from being stored, so it is a pain in the behind to hunt down my router's driver cd to get my passkey every time I want to connect to the internet.I don't think there is a way to connect to a WiFi network and enter the CREDENTIALS using a batch script.

Are you able to install other programs?

If so, have a look at http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/. It's a pretty nice little application that stores your passwords securely in an encrypted datafile.

Alternatively, you might have better luck with a Powershell script. I'll look into it and let you know what I find.

EDIT: After a breif search I couldn't find anything that looks easy to implement (ie scripting), although SOMEONE else might know of a way.Is it possible to accomplish this with VBS then? Deepfreeze not only stops settings from being changed (and saved), it also prevents programs from being installed. You might be able to conjure up something with netsh...

Solve : Network sharing.?

Answer»

I have a Dell Desktop computer using WINDOWS XP Professional and an Acer 5810T Laptop using Windows 7.Both computers are sharing a network via a ROUTER. Originally I set the Network up so that I could access and change documents on any computer from any of the two computers and use one as a back up for the other.

This has been working satisfactorily for about twelve months.

The last couple of days I have been getting a message on the Windows 7 Laptop when transferring from Laptop (Windows 7) to Desktop(Windows XP) saying “Destination Folder access Denied” “you need PERMISSION to perform this action”.

As far as I am aware I have not changed anything.

If I perform the same action using the Desktop to transfer the same file from Laptop to Desktop I have no problem

I have run a CHECK, with my limited knowledge, of various permissions etc., and they appear to be correct though obviously not.

I would appreciate some guidance

Aitch

I ASSUME you meant "If I perform the same action using the Desktop to transfer the same file from Desktop to Laptop I have no problem?

It is probably a permissions error. However, without any info (such as screenshots, usernames) it's hard to tell you what you need to change. Make sure that on the desktop with the folder that is shared you have the username added to it for both security tab & sharing tab and each has full control. Not quite.

I can use the Desktop to transfer files from Laptop to Desktop. I cannot use the Laptop to transfer files from Laptop to Desktop.

I will have another look at permissions but they seem to be correct.

I will post more information later.

AitchI think I have solved the problem. It was a lazy error I was trying to copy to My Documents, which in my case is also Administrators Documents instead of Shared Documents. Thanks for your guidance it at least made me look wider into the problem

Solve : Modem and Router IP conflict, I think?

Answer»

Thanks in advance for any help. You might just be saving a computers life. I have had this before and Linksys tech corrected it so anyway. I am using Windows XP, Motorola SB5101U modem, and Linksys WRT310N router. I can connect to internet fine with with just the modem on and when I PLUG in the router I get nothing.

Like I mentioned before, I think it was an IP confliction that did not allow me to connect before. This configuration with this computer, modem, and router has worked before after Linksys tech support assisted me, but my wife moved to another city and Time Warner put in their modem and wireless router. So I dont know why when I hooked this config back up it is not working. I should wrote that down lst time but here I am anyway. Please help if you can.We need more information.

Describe your setup in terms in order of home PC to Internet.

Let's say I have a PC at home, a wireless router, and a cable modem. So it would be connected like so:

PC --1)--> Router --2)--> Modem --3)--> Internet

1) Ethernet jack from PC to one of the numbered ports on the wireless router (1, 2, 3, or 4)
2) WAN/Internet port from wireless router to the cable modem's Ethernet port
3) Big black coax cable to Internet

So I'll ASSUME in your case that you should be connected like this:

PC --1)--> Linksys WRT310N --2)--> Time Warner Modem --3)--> Internet

I'm also going to assume that your Linksys WRT310N has its default internal IP address of 192.168.1.1. This means that your PC (and anything else on your network, like laptops, iPhones, DVRs, game consoles, etc.) will have a 192.168.1.x IP address.

So your PC may have an IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default gateway assigned to it like so:

IP Address: 192.168.1.100 (just assuming it's 100, since that's usually the first IP in the default RANGE)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (the internal IP address of your router)

Now for the connection between your router and modem. I did say Linksys routers usually use 192.168.1.1 as its default IP address, right? Unfortunately, everything else and their grandmothers do, too! That means your Time Warner modem may be using 192.168.1.1 for its internal IP as well! So your computer, when TRYING to get to a website is doing something like this:

PC: "Dude, I need my pr0n! IP address of...and I have to go through 192.168.1.1 to get there. Okay, Linksys router...check...192.168.1.1 again? Back to the router? Or to this Time Warner thingy?"

So what do we do about this? Either the router or the modem needs a new IP address. If I were you, I wouldn't touch the modem, since all the techs there will probably assume the default IP address when trying to PROVIDE tech support. So change the router's IP address to something else (like 192.168.2.1). This will also change the IP range that your computer and other devices get, so they'll have to be restarted after you change it.

(inb4 "dude, ipconfig /renew works as well!!!"--just trying to keep it simple)

Voila! No more conflict! Now back to the PC surfing deh pronz:

PC: "Dude, I need my pr0n! IP address of...and I have to go through 192.168.2.1 to get there. Okay, Linksys router...check...192.168.1.1 is the next hop. Time Warner modem...check. Internetz, here I come!"

Solve : Wireless Cannot Acquire IP Address?

Answer»

I have four devices on my network. Two wired - a desktop and playstation 3 - and two wireless in the form of two laptops. On the two laptops, routinely (every other day) the person who uses the laptops complains that they cannot get connected to the network and that it says that they cannot acquire an IP address. To TRY to resolve this, I reserved them an IP address on the network through the router settings. This did not do anything.

How can I get this issue resolved? It's extremely tiresome to have to daily restart the router and modem in order to fix the problem until the next time it pops up.

The next time they get the problem, I suggested they ipconfig /renew. They haven't had the problem since yesterday, so I do not know the results of this yet.

Pertinent information:

The laptops are never out of range of the router.

I have a D-link router.

The wired devices never have problems.

Thank you in advance.DrSatanDracula,

Errors like "unable to acquire an IP" are DHCP lease issues (dynamic IP assignment). The DHCP protocol will try to "renew" a lease at 1/2 the lease duration. As the DHCP SERVER is the same for the wired and wireless computers, that would hint that the DHCP server is working OK (although still a possibility).

Was the reserved IP in the router a "static DHCP lease" by MAC address, or did you setup a static IP on the laptops?

I'm curious about the restoration procedure for your issue. Are you having to reset the router to get them back online? Power cycle the modem? Restart the laptop? Exact process. If you are resetting the router to restore the Wifi signal, it almost sounds like a issue with the router's radio.

I'm interested to know the following:
1) DHCP Lease Reset outcome ("ipconfig /release" & "ipconfig /renew")
2) DHCP Lease length in the routers config (24 hrs?)
3) If the Access Point's SSID is still detected by the laptops when the issue is occurring
4) What the signal strength to the router is during an occurrence
5) If the reservation was a DHCP MAC to IP Binding
6) If a static IP assignment (an IP OUTSIDE your DHCP pool's range) on the laptop helps
7) If when in a static IP configuration, whether or not you can ping your router's IP during an occurrence

Thanks! Quote from: wyatt on May 15, 2010, 06:06:16 PM

That's funny. I have the lease time set to virtually infinite...

Quote

By MAC address through the D-Link firmware program's "add by computer name" which automatically popped up the MAC address for me.

Sorry to not be precise.

To get them back online, I unplug the modem and router, wait thirty seconds, and replug them. At that time, the router is power-cycled and the network restarts. They are able to get on just fine after that.

This has happened on another router beforehand.

Quote
1) DHCP Lease Reset outcome ("ipconfig /release" & "ipconfig /renew")

We didn't get to check if anything happened this morning. I'll test it next time it happens.

Quote
2) DHCP Lease length in the routers config (24 hrs?)

999999 minutes. So...essentially infinite.

Quote
3) If the Access Point's SSID is still detected by the laptops when the issue is occurring

I'll check this when the issue occurs.

Quote
4) What the signal strength to the router is during an occurrence

As judged by the laptops?

Quote
5) If the reservation was a DHCP MAC to IP Binding

Yes, the reservation has the MAC addresses of the laptops (and the wired devices).

Quote
6) If a static IP assignment (an IP outside your DHCP pool's range) on the laptop helps

Can you explain how I might do this?

Quote
7) If when in a static IP configuration, whether or not you can ping your router's IP during an occurrence

This'll be tested.

Thanks so much for your help on this matter.

So you've already replaced the router once before? Can you just try resetting 1 device to try and determine the culprit? You might be able to avoid the modem reset by using a router's re-authentication/dhcp-lease-renewal features in the web interface.

The static IP should help out a lot with the troubleshooting.

Do you have any of your IP subnet information?

If not, here is my short notes:

Determine Current IP Subnet

Use "ipconfig /all" in a Command PROMPT to determine the following:

1) You subnet mask (ex: "255.255.255.0")
2) Your Gateway IP Address ("192.168.0.1")
3) Your DNS Server IPs
4) Your current IP address (ex: "192.168.0.100")

Get into your router and find out what your pool's range is (ex "192.168.0.2 > 192.168.0.102" )

Most home routers use a 255.255.255.0 (aka "Class-full Class C", "Classless" 24 bits or /24 - CIDR) subnet mask which allows for up to 254 hosts in "4th octet" (4th Octet = last number/4th position in the IP address "192.168.1.XXX").

The info found tells us this about your network:

Subnet = 192.168.0.0 / 255.255.255.0
Usable = 192.168.0.1 through 192.168.0.254

IP Assignments:
192.168.0.0 = Network IP - Unusable
192.168.0.1 = Router
192.168.0.2 = DHCP Pool
[...]
192.168.0.102 = DHCP Pool
192.168.0.103 = Unused
[...]
192.168.0.254 = Unused
192.168.0.255 = Broadcast - Unusable

Create your own little notes, and pick an IP address out of the Unused space.

Here are several guides for different OS's for static IP setup:
http://portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm

Once applied. Make sure you can do this in a command prompt:

1) run "ping 192.168.0.1" where the IP is your router's IP address
2) Perform DNS Checks with "nslookup www.google.com"
3) traceroute out into the Internet "tracert www.google.com"

I'll try that next time, too. Though I'd prefer to just avoid having to constantly do this if there is some kind of permanent fix available.

If there are two computers right next to eachother and one can see the wireless network with good signal and the other PC can't then it's obviously a problem with the wireless ADAPTER.

What's the signal strength with which you are connecting to this network? Do you own this wireless network or are you connecting to a neighbors? How far AWAY is the router from both computers?

Solve : Port forwarding with two routers.?

I have two routers. One is a Zyxel P-660R-D1, the other is a Linksys WRT54G. I would like to forward UDP port 30000 to 192.168.2.103 (static). The zyxels ip is 192.168.1.1 and the linksys is 192.168.2.1. How would I do this? I can get into the configuration SCREENS for both. The OS I'm trying to forward to is windows XP or Windows VISTA (which ever is EASIER)I don't understand.

Are these private networks directly attached to each other, or is the internet in between them?

Could you possibly draw a diagram, something simple in Paint would do, of what you're trying to do?

I'll help as best I can.I assume your zyxel is your modem and linksys is your wireless AP. I would just forward port 30,000 from your modem to your linksys ip. Then from the linksys forward to the ip in that SUBNET that you want to receive it.

Solve : WG111v2 support guid?

OK, first off sorry for extremely bad spelling, so i apologise in advance, second, i had this problem but realised what the problem was so I'm going to EXPLANE it hear as I'm new and nothing about this website other than it looks awesome.

OK, hear i GO...

the WG111v2/v1/ has problems working with windows 7 and vista, so your stating problem is that it does not show the USB adapter at all (does not register that it is plugged in) so, the logical explanation is to search for the updated installation device which you can find on the first page after typing in your USB adapters NAME in google.

after you download your driver SOFTWARE installation for windows 7/Vista you will see that it "recommends" that you install the software that comes with it.

this is unrecommended as the Netgeer software conflicts with the windows wireless system, so i would strongly recommend that you do not use the netgear siftware for primary wireless usage.

What happens if you install the Netgear software software: a conflit occurs betwine the windows wireless software and the Netgear, what happens is you try connecting to your wireless using the Netgeer softwere and the windows wireless softwere will try and connect at the same time, this makes the wireless device confused and your wireless devise will register with your wifi as "unidentified network" and it will stay like that forever, so, if you have installed the Netgeer software and are experiencing problems than unstall it, install it until a bot appears saying wether you would like to use the windows wireless software or the netgeer softwere, check the windows wireless softwere and check "do not show this message again" and your done.

note: Windows XP users should not have any problem using the Netgeer softwere.

note for us wireless hackers out there: using Aircracck with WG111V2 will only work if your using Linux, the only USB devise that works with Aircrack on windows is the WG111v1. (follow guide to get all USB version working)
