Solve : internet doesnt work on my profile but does on others???

Answer»

Hey, got a very weird problem...at least i think it is because I cant FIND a similar problem anywhere else. It all started a couple of days ago. My wife needed to sync a new iphone with itunes but had to update itunes first, but she couldnt get on the internet. I wasnt home to troubleshoot so she went to starbucks and downloaded the latest version. She came back home and was on the phone for 2hrs with the local cable company troubleshooting and the tech guy finally determined that there was something (software) on her laptop not allowing her to connect to the internet, the usual easy response i thought. I TRIED the next day to connect, couldnt...so I reset the cable modem and it worked! I synced her phone up for her and left the computer on...came back a couple hrs later and nothing worked; internet, task manager...nothing i tried. I switched users to another profile and the internet did work. I downloaded spyware blaster, windows malicious removal tool, panda cloud 2010 (her antivirus had expired), and malwarebytes. After many many hrs of scans I wasnt even able to get on with any profile on the laptop. Did more scans, cleaned some more, reset my router to default, renamed and secured and was able to get on with secondary profile, but still no dice with my wife's. She showed connected to the local network but it had the limited or no connectivity (yellow triangle with exclamation point). Tried to REPAIR; got error msg could not assign ip address. Ran the winsock xp tool and still dice. Went to administrative tools to check tcp/netbios was on and it was however dhcp server was not started, so i started it and immediately the ip address was assigned, so i figured it was fixed. Nope. Dell Wireless WLAN utility and the windows xp icon on the taskbar are all clear and indicate an excellent connection, but my wife's profile will not access the internet while the one im on right now typing this one up does...I'm at a loss at this point.

Dell Inspiron E1505
Intel CPU
T2050 @1.6GHz
1 GB Ram
XP MEDIA Center Edition Version 2002 SP3

Any help would be awesome! I'm all out of options at this point and need a stiff drink Short of getting all the documents off her profile and setting her up with a new one (probably the smartest and easiest thing to do but that would be admitting defeat!!) I don't know what else to do. Sorry if this a longwinded post, but i'm just triying to be thorough. Please let me know what other info you might need.

Thanks!!
sometimes a profile will become corrupt for whatever reason and although it MAY be possible to fix it, you will still end up cutting your losses and migrating the data and settings over to a new profile...5 hours later. My advice would be to just create a new profile and move on. Don't be too eager to delete the old one though in case she finds something not setup quite right and you need to go back in there to cross check something. Here is the process I take to restore from a corrupted user profile:

Firstly, copy all files (EXCEPT the below) from the profile location (%SystemRoot%\Documents and Settings\) to a seperate temporary folder.

NTUser.dat
NTUser.dat.log
NTUser.ini

Then, delete the 3 above files and have the user log on and off. Then replace the required files from the temporary folder.

The user can then log on and the profile should be restored.

Solve : Windows CE 6.00 netbook unable to connect to internet?

Answer»

I just got this netbook knockoff from ebay. It is called Wondermedia Prism netbook. I cannot CONNECT to the INTERNET even though WiFi is turned on and I can see the name of my network. But when I click on it I get a "unable to display PAGE---cannot find server or DNS" error message. My ISP didn't know much about it. They said if I can figure out how to get to the TCP/IP settings maybe they could help. Quote from: Vonique on June 09, 2010, 09:46:07 AM

Solve : network connection?

Answer»

OK I've got a problem. Yesterday i talked to a GEEK squad agent at best buy about a problem with my asus laptop. It keeps randomly losing connection for 5 seconds and connecting again, which is just enough time to disconnect me from online games like WoW. He said I should probably update the drivers. I went to the device manager and right clicked Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN and clicked update drivers. It updated them in a few minutes. Then, however my laptop wouldn't connect at all to the internet. When i ran windows diagnostics, it said that my WIRELESS cabability wasn't turned on. It was. I thought maybe those drivers needed to be updated too, but i can't find the device. Instead i downgraded the WiFi drivers back to what they were, but i still can't connect. It must be something that i did, but does anyone know how to turn the wireless capability on from inside the computer to make sure it isn't the switch. If anyone has a solutions that are a bit complicated, I'd prefer step by step directions. I have windows 7.
if you have another computer in the house try to uninstall the WiFi driver from the Device Manager an don't forget to click DELETE driver... the you go to the other computer then look for what model your laptop is then you look for the WiFi driver for that specific laptop the put in on a USB CARD and install it on your laptop..

Hope i helpedQuote from: john67832 on June 29, 2010, 08:11:51 AM

Yesterday i talked to a geek squad agent at best buy about a problem with my asus laptop.
First problem^^ solution: Don't trust them at all.

Now, on to the connection drop...

Whats the router that you are using and how far away are you from this device.
That might be the problem, loss of the auth to the router.

try what BluerjB said that actually sounds like a pretty dee-s solution . and if that dont work then:
In DM (device manager) look for the device, it might be under a general name ie. wireless card, and right click on it and see when it was updated and if its on. Turn it off then on.

Solve : broadband dropping phone calls?

Answer»

Every TIME we use the phone the broadband drops out.
The set up is like this
Main Socket> Sky (Double) > Phone + extension cable> filter> dsl > router > ethernet to pc

But when I try to place a filter into the main socket the connection completely goes with or without the phone. How should I have it set up?

Thanks

So I did some testing.
Test 1
The first test was plugging just the filter into the mains socket and then connecting a laptop to the router. The connection was fine. I then plugged the phone/sky into the filter as well and the connection was fine no drops. I did this test with three filters I had and all worked fine.

Test 2
I then connected the filter at the end of my extension that extends the phone socket upstairs. With the other end of the extension plugged into the main socket with phone/sky plugged in. All filters worked fine. But the phone caused the broadband to disconnect and the phone made FUNNY noises.

Test 3
I then rotated all filters, placing one directly into the main socket with phone/sky and an extension extending phone line upstairs with another filter at the end to plug dsl cable in. No internet connection what so ever. Phone fine.

Conclusion
filters seem fine as does the wiring as does router so what is the problem? Test 3 was the way I originally had it set up and it use to WORK fine.

I got TWO more brand new filters and tried them and still the same problems.

Solve : good book??

Answer»

was wondering if anybody has any recommendations on a good NETWORKING book. One that explains windows settings, seting up up both wired and wireless, and the whys of the particular settings, etc?

Thanks To what level? Like home networking, or CORPORATE?

Mircosoft do thier own certifications, but I'd only go down that route if your serious about working in IT.

Otherwise, something like a "For DUMMIES" book would probably do. http://www.google.co.uk/products?hl=en&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ENUK253&q=home+networking+for+dummies&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=Sq_yS4nQF4T80wSj_MyaDQ&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=3&ved=0CDoQrQQwAgno no no. nothing for testing. I'm just looking for a good book for a home user to learn more than the scant things I already KNOW. Something maybe mid level. More than Networking for Dummies. : P

Solve : Wake on Lan -Another issue with 802.1x?

Answer»

In order to save resources I have configured all NIC (Intel various) to use Wake on LAN, when not in use to go to sleep.
This reduces the electric connectivity with the switch. When this happens the switch sends the work station to the VLAN with no service.
Is there a way to use this feature WOL and not have the switch not recognize the work station? Can you provide more detail? What details do you need?
The NICS are various Intel CARDS all with WOL capabilities.
The Switches are all CISCO, the protocol for connectivity is 802.1x
Wake on LAN reduces the bandwidth between the card and the switch
when this happens the switch sees the work station as non-compliant and sends it to a VLAN with no Network capabilities.
I am looking for a way to KEEP WOL and keep the workstation in the VLAn with Network services.I got to ask.....what are you really saving using WOL?

Solve : The Wi-Fi Naff Box (sorry Neuf Box) from SFR France?

Answer»

Not mine, but an Acer Aspire LAPTOP RUNNING Vista, with the usual pre-installed Acers long garbage of programs, but is at least wi-fi enabled.
( l myself have a tower case, and no need for wi-fi but l cannot believe how difficult it seems to be to install and in fact how to CHANGE the settings).
It's a French Provider (SFR) and it's called a Neuf Box ( or should that be a Naff Box and l'm being too flippant?).
I know many of you are from the good old US of A, but have a read anyway and you may at least be ABLE to throw up some suggestions, as any will be appreciated.
Now I'm trying to help someone to get their neuf wi-fi to work on the above mentioned computer, which someone was supposed to have set up for them a few months ago.
I'm not too much of a dummy, but don't quote me on that, however this is beyond comprehension at the moment, and l'm a tad reluctant to phone up their tech services
in France as l would like to speak to someone who actually knows what they are talking about! (sorry, bit flippant again there).
This "Neuf" box is connected, a usb cable is connected, and there is an internet connection established. No problems so far.
Now for wi-fi proper, l removed the usb cable and the blue wi-fi light on the box stays on so at least that's something!
Reconnected to the internet and their home page comes up with Neuf's wi-fi gumph so entered friends username, userid, accepted condtions as requested and hit connexion!
Zilch, just said that there was an error in the details entered.
So went into the connections on the pc and for wi-fi, it seems to be set up for using Public Services(?) but does at least to be receiving a wi-fi signal of some description. Under the SSID name, the person who set this up has just put "my wifi". Surely this should have been the SSID shown on the underneath of the Neuf Box, at the very least? Whatever l try, l just can't seem to alter this.
So at the moment we have an internet connection providing the usb cable is plugged in. TAKE this out and there is nothing at all wi-fi wise.
Now l have the original setup disk and am a bit reluctant about using this at the moment (don't want to obliterate everything).
When setting up wi-fi then on a wi-fi enabled pc, and l know all ISP's may be slightly different with their software, are there and settings that l should need to be aware of.
ANY help will be appreciated.
RegardsFrom what I could tell the Neuf box is a fairly standard ADSL modem. Of course, almost everything I found was in French, and I don't speak very much French, and some of the translations I got were kind of so so. But it shouldn't be more difficult to set up that one than in the USA, or in most other countries.

I wouldn't be reluctant to call up their tech support. That's part of the service your friends paying for. You may need a translator to help if your not strong in French.

When I call up tech support in the USA, sometimes I feel like I need a translator to help (and I was born here).

Solve : How do I share a printer??

Answer»

Ok so I have a pretty odd situation:

laptop
--------
user A, admin privs: can print
user B, LIMITED account: can't print (unable to connect to the printer)
user C, admin privs: can print

printer: shared
permissions: user A, user B, user C (print)

pc
---
all users: can print

I think there is an issue with user B.
It can't connect when it tries to print.
It's added to the security of the printer,
but I think the accounts on both machines are not the same (though they have the same name and password).

This shouldn't be an issue anyway because since the printer is shared with other accounts on the laptop,
any user should be able to print through user A, which has access, which has shared the printer.

However, user B can't print..... gah.

What could be going on?
Any ideas?

Thanks

I find it odd there are no answers.Either everyone is on VACATION or there isn't anyone technical enough to SOLVE my problem. Why are people not answering?the more you "bump" your topic the less chance you have of some one answering it cos it will MOVE down the page or worse it would be locked by one of the admins for spam.

Solve : No dial tone for dial up?

Answer»

Hello, I am trying to HELP a friend who knows nothing about computers. I set her computer up in October and it was WORKING fine. She doesn't know what happened but recently the INTERNET just stopped working (she has an older Sony desktop computer, XP, and basicnet as her internet...which is dial up). When I bring the computer over to my house (i have high speed internet), the internet works fine. But when I try to connect on her dial up it just keeps saying no dial tone. When the line is CONNECTED to her phone, she gets a dial tone and the phone works fine. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am a beginner as well! Thanks so much. Your "Default Connection" changes when you move the computer from Dial-up to Network.
Control Panel--Internet Options---Connections
Dial-up and LAN are configured there. It could be a problem with her modem. Try the dial up at your house (remember to UNPLUG your DSL modem first if you use one).

Solve : Serious Internet Issues... please help!!!?

Answer»

Right, my internet is fully connected to broadband via a wireless CONNECTION to the router. Firefox is my default browser and will only work when in safemode (otherwise it will just crash). In addition to this, Internet Explorer does not work and MSN does not connect, stating that it is not possibe due to me not being connected to the internet which obviously is not the case.

Please please please HELP!!!!!!!!

Btw I am using Microsoft Vista

Thank you for your time and help. How do you know the Internet is WORKING if you can not open a web browser to check?

Can you reinstall FireFox by downloading it from another computer onto a flash drive, and installing it again?

What Antivirus PROGRAM are you running? Are you always booting into SafeMode? (Safemode often will not work properly with WiFi, and even then it is not suitable to run your computer in Safemode all the time).
Can you plug directly into the router? Assuming you mean safemode in firefox and not safemode in windows then one of your plugins / addons is unstable with your version of firefox. That's why when you enter safemode in firefox, which disables addons and such, firefox works. So use safemode and when you open firefox remove your addons or make sure they are disabled. It will be a pain if you have dozens of addons but that's how it goes. Then eventually you will be able to open up firefox "normally". It's probably the same thing with IE. As far as MSN I don't use it so I can't comment on it.

I have been having a problem of my wireless internet going out for no apparent REASON for about 3 months off and on. I wiped my hard drive, reloaded everything and it worked fine for a COUPLE of days. I wiped the hd again, reloaded, everything worked fine for about 2 weeks and couldnt connect again.
Thinking this was a virus i signed on for virus malware antispyware bootcamp with Superdave and we ran all the scans coming up with nothing. Which hardware version & which driver are you using?
http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/lbc/WUSB54G?referrer=www.linksysbycisco.com
WindowsXP is very particular about drivers for wireless. From your post it appears that you have a desktop machine that was not made by ONE of the major manufacturers.
You should be aware that the AMD dual core there is a special need for updates available from Microsoft and AMD.
The following link is about laptops using the AMD dual core. However, as she read it over, you'll see that the ideas presented there really apply to the AMD dual core specifically, and not just to laptops. In other words, any computer using the AMD dual core will need the updates available from either Microsoft or AMD.

Solve : faster download speed on bitcomet?

Answer»

on bit comet
Im new to PEER to peer and i think i need to ublock this router below for a faster download or upload

this blocked by my firewall. How can

Listen Port of TCP:65534 (Blocked by Firewall/Router)FIRSTLY what firewall are you running? e.g. Windows Firewall on Windows 7 ...
What router do you have? e.g Netgear DG834G

Generally speaking the FIRST time you run a program such as bitcomet after installing it your firewall software will pop up asking if you want to allow it access to thee internet, and so long as you click yes the ports that are needed get allowed through the firewall on your PC and directed to the program.

Depending on who you are with for the internet, i.e. who is your ISP (BT, Talktalk), the ISP may themselves block traffic on ports known for peer2peer or other filesharing.

Very rarely do you have to add ports to the firewall in the router because;

Most routers are set that once a program runs such as Bitcomet
The program makes external internet activity on the need ports such as the LISTENING port '65534' the router allows this out and in turn directs traffic that comes back on that port back to the originating PC or laptop.

Either WAY give us a few more details and we should be able to help.

Solve : Wireless router does not respond?

Answer»

I run a WinXP laptop, up-do-date (software/drivers etc).

I'm connected to a linksys wireless router. Generally it works ok.
But, every 10-15 minutes the connection dies --- I can't connect to the internet, even though the laptop is still connected to the wireless router (signal is strong). I go to the wireless network connections and it shows i am connected with a very strong signal (still no internet).
When I disconnect and try to reconnect, i get the "waiting for the network..." message forever, and it does not connect.
I have to unplug the router to reset it, then it works again, but only for a while until this problem repeats.

I have no idea what the problem is or what is causing it. What MODEL Linksys router? How old is it?oops, i was confused.
it's a NETGEAR WGT624, about 4 years old.I should have also asked, when did this all start to happen? Had any changes been made to the COMPUTER or the network? (A Windows update, etc.?)Quote

NET GEAR WGT624
Many things change in just four years.
You can either upgrade the firmware.
http://www.wardrive.net/firmware/netgear
- OR -
Just buy a new router. A Links wireless now goes for near $30 and performs about the same as what you got. Just Google 'Cheap Wireless Routers'
(Net-gear is still kind of pricey.)

Now my wild guess.
My best guess is the power supply is overheating. Try to keep it COOL and see if it runs longer. Put an ice cube on it. The power supply, not the router.Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 19, 2010, 11:15:36 PM

Yes, I would have guessed the same thing. Power supply or the broadcom chip inside. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 19, 2010, 11:15:36 PM

DON'T do this, electricity and WATER are a bad combination.
Worst idea ever award. What happens when you bypass the router and connect directly to the modem - does everything work okay?

Use forensic quality laboratory certified 100% pure ice in a clean room. Wear mask and gloves at all times. And a hair net. Yes, good call, Allan -- I should've suggested that from my own experience. Tell us about your connection quality when you run directly from the modem to the computer, bypassing the router. If the connection is then good, it tells us the problem is in the router.I connected to the modem directly and it worked FINE. But I wasn't convinced. I waited until the connection failed again (although all parameters were seemingly normal --> ipconfig showed ip address, gateway, etc, signal was very good ---> except no packets being received).

Once the internet failed again, i connected directly to the modem, and still no internet connection. This would mean that it's the modem or cable service that is messing up.

I reconnected the router to the modem, refreshed the router (plug out/plug in), and the internet was back. Why/how could the router have such an effect on the modem? I don't understand the situation. I'll call the service provides to see if they can replace the modem.

Solve : Windows 7 network error?

Answer»

I have a desktop and a LAPTOP. I want to create a NETWORK between these two.I have done all posible effort.Windows 7 is the operating system installled on both. When I'am creating a home group "It says password is incorrect" even password is copy paste. Then I changed advance shareing options. No solution. Firewall status,

importantI'am the only one who is using this pc so I'am the admin and have full rights.

Some how I was able to access the other network (pc) but when I try to access shared partition (D) there comes a message saying

Windows can not access Coolmalia-pc\d

you do not hhave permission to access Coolmalia-pc\d with contact your administrator to request access. So for starters, both have windows 7? Since your talking about setting up a home group for both i assume this to be true. Have you SET up sharing on both computers? It requires some minor tweaking to set up a home group. You need to specify when folders you WOULD like placed in the home group. Question, are the user accounts on each computer the same? if not try this (refer to SCREEN shot) Try setting it to manage the user accounts individually for the connection to the computer home group

Solve : Internet wireless connection?

Answer»

I am having a devil of a time getting connected wirelessly. I was working fine and then reinstalled Windows XP service pack 2 and now cannot connect wirelessly.

I continue to get the message "Acquiring network address " and the IP ADDRESS SUBNET MASK and DHCP all show 0.0.0.0.'

I have tried many thinks and today went to Best Buy Geek Squad. He did a command prompt and said he rest my Wireless stuff and it connected at the store, but back home same old :Acquiring network address " story. He said if I had a problem at home I should put in the Command Prompt,": NETSC WINSOCK RESET. I have 2 issues. What is the correct way to enter this prompt? DO I put in spaces as he wrote it or does it all run TOGETHER no spaces. I tried entering as follows, " NETSC WINSOCK RESET and it comes back and says " "NETSC is not recognized as an internal or external command" Should I be putting it as NETSC/WINSOCK/RESET ?? Sorry but I am not a computer PERSON so I would try the Ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
before you try the NETSC, that might fix the problem you are having.
(GeekSquad peeps are not very good at their job but i digrest)

It also might be with your router. DCHP might not be enabled (by default it should), but just double check it.
As for the command you DO put in the spaces when you run it but if it comes back with that error then that command is not installed. This link might help you out, PM me if you dont understand it...

I agree! On both counts. Especially considering NETSC isn't a command (as the OP has discovered)

Now, there is a "NET" command, and it can be used to stop and start services, but not using a syntax even close to what they were told.

Besides- winsock has nothing to do with acquiring the network address. I'd go with the ipconfig commands that Valkyrie mentioned.in my opinion there are 2 ways to face up this problem which they depend from the operating system you have.

Windows
1)- Computer connected directly to the modem
Get to a command prompt. (START, run, cmd).

Type "ipconfig /release" (without the quotes, on the command line by itself).
Type "ipconfig /renew" (without the quotes, on the command line by itself).
Windows (second option)
2)- Computer connected directly to the modem
Get to a command prompt. (START, run, cmd).
Type "ipconfig /release" (without the quotes).
Shut down computer.
TURN off computer.
Turn off all ethernet hubs/switches.
Turn off cable/DSL modem.
Leave off overnight.
Turn everything back on.
Network with Router
Log into the router's admin console. (Often http://192.168.1.1/)
Release the IP address. (Method varies by router manufacturer)
Turn off router, ethernet hubs/switches, and the cable/DSL modem.
Leave off overnight.
Turn everything back on.

If you are using a cable/DSL modem and a router, you may wish to connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. Please note that this could significantly impact your system security. This allows your ISP's DHCP to issue you a NEW (hopefully changed) IP address based of the (hardware) MAC address of your computer's ethernet card.

If all the above has not worked to change your IP address and you have a router, check and see if there is a "Clone MAC Address" option. Using it should change your IP address; however, you'll only be able to do it once (in most cases).

These will not work in all cases. If all else fails contact your internet service provider (ISP) and ask them if they are able to change your IP address or how long your connection needs to be off for your IP address to change.

If you trying to change your IP address because you are just trying to access web based forums you may wish to attempt to configure your internet browser to use a PROXY server.

I have tried the site "Is it just me and it is just my system. It also happens on my other system when connected through my wireless router to laptop. It seems like maybe it is an ISP problem but they say it is not. I also tried to check and change MTU setting but have at this point not made any changes. I was going to set at something below 1500. The sites I can not access are bid-auctions.net and global2025.com should you want to ry from your SIDE. I have ask friends in other states and areas to check and was told they load fine. I have tried in firefox and IE. Not sure where to go from here.If you have no trouble accessing other websites, I believe the problem is more likely with the website than your computer or internet connection. Neither of those two sites works right for me, either. WEB of Trust has no info on either of those sites. I would avoid them. you are correct-thanks

Solve : New lap top question.?

Answer»

My wife just got a lap top computer and it is hooked up to our router wireless. The router is a Belkin. Every thing is working fine. The question is, is this safe. Can any one GET into our network through our router? We have no sharing between computers or printers. If this isn't safe, how do we make it safe. Most of the stuff on our computers is pictures and things I don't care if any one sees. But we do order stuff over the net and use card numbers. That could be bad if some got them. Thanks for your help.It is nowhere near as safe as just using a hard line. If someone taps into a hardline you might notice him sitting at your kitchen table. That being said there are many ways to make it safer. You could make sure that you are using WPA2 instead of WEP, use a strong key for access. Make sure that you monitor your routing tables and log files for the router.

The most important thing though is to have excellent anti-spyware and anti-virus updated and continuously running on your computer.

Although it is possible that someone may be outside your house with a van full of gear trying to intercept your wireless signals, it is more likely that compromise will occur through an invited threat. We have a whole section that deals with virus and spyware as a testament to that. Thanks for the information. I don't know what WPA2 or WEP is or what one I have. How do I find that out? When you are talking about a key I assume that you are talking about the log in password that we don't use. There is only the wife and I at home and we don't use the other ones computer so we never set up passwords to log in to our computers. My lap top had a password log in because it was used at work. I have no idea how to monitor the router log files or tables so any information you can help me with would be great. Not having passwords on your computer is not a good practice. Somewhere I read that having passwords to your user accounts does increase, some what, your security level when you are connected to the Internet.Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 27, 2010, 09:47:15 AM

Not having passwords on your computer is not a good practice. Somewhere I read that having passwords to your user accounts does increase, some what, your security level when you are connected to the Internet.

That's not strictly true. Not having a password is actually more secure than having a weak, or guessable password, as Windows restricts access over the network for users without passwords.

Therefore no password is better then having your password be "password".

Also, slightly off topic, but in regards to this bit:

Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 27, 2010, 09:47:15 AM
your security level when you are connected to the Internet

It's best practise to use a "User Account" when doing your day-to-day activities, instead of an "Administrator Account", as that prevents a lot of things being exploited due to a lack of permissions.

If the OP has any questions on how to ENABLE this kind of stuff, feel free to ask (letting us know what operating system you're using (Windows XP, Vista, 7 etc)) and I can get some instructions written up.

As far as your initial question about Wireless Security goes, what is the Model Number of your Belkin router? Again, so I can point you in the direction of instructions on how to enable simple but effective security (WPA2, or at least WEP).Two of the computers have Windows Vista Home Premium and the new lap top has Windows 7 Home Basic. The belkin router model is F5D7234-4 v3. Thank you much for your help. I am assuming that they are administrator accounts because they are the only accounts on the computers? Are you telling me to create a second account and use it to do things on the net?Yes, it's easy to do, you will want it to be just a user account though.go to user account in windows vista/7 and create a new account. create a limited account and use it for your daily activities (you may find the uac prompt annoying sometimes) when you trying to do something taht requires admin level permissions. use a password on both account (admin and limited). enable WPA2 on your wireless router, you can do that by entering your ip address in your web browser and it will take you to a page on your (ISP) internet service providers site, from there you can change diffrent settings like your password and more.
its very easy to get your ip address, take a look on the bottom of your post>>>>>tadaQuote from: dlx on April 28, 2010, 01:40:29 AM

What you'll need to do to change the WiFi settings is go to the IP address of your router. This will be the "Default Gateway" on the laptop. I assume the other two machines connect to the same router, but with cables, right? If so, this can be done on any of your machines, and the Default Gateway should be the same as well.

To find the default gateway:

Start - Run - Type (no quotes) "Cmd" - Press Enter - Type (no quotes) "Ipconfig" - Press Enter - Find the correct Network Adapter and the Default Gateway will be listed.

Now, lets assume for this example that the Default Gateway is 192.168.2.1.

Now in a web browser (Internet Explorer) browse to http://192.168.2.1

You will probably be prompted for a user name and password, and the default ones are probably on the label on the router itself.

Now you're logged on to the router. You should see a bunch of options on the lefthand side of the screen, click on Wireless.

From there I think it's Security, where you should be able to pick WPA2 as your encryption type. (See page 57 of your user manual http://www.belkin.com/uk/support/article/?lid=enu&pid=F5D7234uk4&aid=14386&scid=0)

NOTE: If you have a Nintendo DS, or DS lite and you want to be able to connect that to your WiFi, you will need to use WEP. This does not apply to the DSi.

Once you have done this you will need to enter that password on each of your devices that connect via WiFi. If you have any problems, let us know.

Also, regarding the secondary user account:

Yes, that's what I'd recommend. It just puts another layer between you and getting a vulnerablity exploited.Let me see if I understand this. I will have to use a log in name when I start the computer then log in to the network to get on to the net? I don't see a problem with that but the wife is going to. I can hear her now. I don't want to play spy, I just want to send an Email and look up stuff on the net. This is jut to much. Your going to have to put this back the way it was. I will bet on that. I did as you said and went to the site with the IP address but I didn't change any thing. That is the place that Belkin had me change stuff to make the wireless work. I guess that I have no protection because where I has to pick WPA2 it said Disabled. Now if I change this am I going to goof up things? Like make the system not work? When I got the high speed internet I picked up the router and hooked it up and put in the disk and nothing worked so I had to talk with Belkin to get it to work. Then the other day I had to get them to help make the wireless work. Now every thing is working. I just don't want to break any thing. You understand what I am saying?Quote from: I Shooter on April 28, 2010, 05:57:24 AM
Let me see if I understand this. I will have to use a log in name when I start the computer then log in to the network to get on to the net?

Not quite. When you first re-connect to the wireless network just tick the box that says "connect automatically" and you won't need to re-enter the WiFi password.

As far as the User account thing, you don't really need to do anything with Windows 7, as they've changed the way users interact with the system by default.

Quote from: I Shooter on April 28, 2010, 05:57:24 AM
You understand what I am saying?

I do indeed. If you make the WPA2 change on the router, you won't break anything, but I assume a few small changes will need to be made on the laptop.

You will probably need to remove the saved WiFi network (I assume it's setup to connect automatically).
(I don't have a Win 7 machine in front of me atm, but I can draw up instructions later for you if you need them)

You will need to connect the laptop to the WiFi network, using the password, and ensuring you tick the "Connect automatically" box. During this process it will ask for the password, and it will remember it for future use.

It sounds like the changes Belkin walked you through were to make sure the router could connect to the internet. Applying WPA2 will not affect this.Let me see if I understand what I am going to do. I set up the WPA2 thing from my computer and it will work for the two hard wired computers and I will have to set up the lap top from the lap top? Or the lap top will have to be tweaked to work after I set up from my computer? For the first time any of the computers log on to the net through internet explorer they will have to log in with the key or pass word then click the little box and the next time we will just have to hit internet explorer and get to the net? Is that about it? On the windows 7 computer ( her new lap top) she will not have to create a second account. On the two that are hard wired they will have to add an account for each and add pass words for all accounts? Yes the changes Belkin had me make got the wireless to work.Quote from: I Shooter on April 28, 2010, 07:06:52 AM

Ok, firstly, WPA2 only affects the wireless connections, so the hardwired machines won't be affected by that change.

Depending on the current settings on the laptop you will need to do the following:

If the current wireless connection is saved:
Delete the saved settings
Connect with the new settings (ensuring they get saved)

You won't have to do anything in IE, think of this change as "at the computer level".

Shall we park the other (User) idea for now and get you up and running with WPA2 first?

When I get home later (4 or 5 hours) I'll make a blog post with some screen shots for you to follow and I'll put a link in here. The screen shots will probably help explain, and will give you some reference.

Seeing as you've voiced concerns about affecting usability, I'd recommend adjusting the UAC (Start -> CONTROL Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Change User Account Control settings.

There is a SLIDER there that explains the different levels.

Basically what this will do is notify (make the screen greyed out with a pop up) when certain actions are about to take place, such as installing a new piece of software. This just makes sure you actually want to install/change the settings, so if something comes up unexpectedly then it's probably something you don't want to run.

This shouldn't affect usablity too much, but it will add a layer of security. Obviously it's not the best solution, but I think, given your concerns, it's appropriate and suitable. That sounds good, I will do it. Thank you much for all the help. I hope that we are good to go now. I did have one more question. If the lap top picks up a bug is it possible to give it to the other computers on our system? I told the wife that it couldn't because there isn't any sharing. Is that true?Ultimately the short answer is yes, but in all probablity the answer is no.

Just make sure you've got some anti-virus and anti-malware protection and you should be ok.

Also, make sure it's updated regularly and it actually runs (as in a full scan) at least once a week. I'd suggest you schedule this time when the machine is on, but not being used (as when scans run using the PC can be painfully slow).

Something like:

Anti-virus:
Microsoft Security Essentials
Avast!

Anti-malware:
Malwarebytes (free version will do)
Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows DefenderWe use Avast, Malwarebytes and Spybot. I run them all every other week. Thank you much for all your time and help. The other day I picked up a Belkin Wireless G Desktop card for the computer in our travel trailer and put it in. The disk that came with it was of little use. It did have the drivers. So I called our internet provider to help me get it working. They helped then it quit working. I called Belkin to help me get it working. I had no idea that they would have me change just about every thing that you had me do. Then after I was finished and the trailer computer was working. I CHECKED the wife's computer and it wasn't. So I called them back and they helped me get it going. They had me change WPA2 to the last setting on the list and a lot of other stuff. I have no idea if it is safe or not. I know that I don't trust them. I asked him was it safe and he said Oh there is no way for some one to get to your stuff. I know that is a lie. I now have two wired computers and two wireless computers on this system. How can I check to see if it is safe like you had me set it up?Do you now know how to access your router control/admin panel via web browser? If so, just open it and check whether WPA or WPA2 encryption is enabled. If it is, then you're OK.It is set to WEP.WEP is not as secure as WPA but it's much better than no encryption. WEP vs WPA
I started out with no encryption so I guess this is better than I was. I just don't understand why he had me change it from WPA2. Is there a reason I am not seeing? Is it because I added a computer? Will WPA2 only take care of one wireless computer? I think I am going to call them back and find out what is going on.Quote from: I Shooter on May 22, 2010, 05:16:38 PM
Is it because I added a computer? Will WPA2 only take care of one wireless computer?
No, more than one computer should be no problem. It simply involves setting up WPA2 on each computer and using the same WPA password on all wireless computers, and that password must be the same as the one used in the router to enable WPA.

The only reason I can think of, regarding Belkin setting up WEP instead of WPA, is that the person may have been uncertain or had some difficulty setting up WPA and decided to go the easier route and use WEP. Setting up WPA can involve choosing between such options as WPA2, WPA2-Personal, and, in conjunction with that, also having to select TKIP or AES. But, I would think they would surely be knowledgeable enough to get WPA2 set up for you.

Some more info: http://www.openxtra.co.uk/articles/wpa-vs-80211iI just got off the phone with them and it is set up now WPA2. I feel much better. I went out to the trailer and tried to set it back up. No luck. It sees the connection but can't connect to it. I hope when I get an antenna that every thing will work fine. I should bring it back in the house and make the connection. It is just a real pain to get all the TV cables unhooked. Thanks once more for all your help.

Solve : Can connect to router but no internet.?

Answer»

I know this is a likely tiring question for y'all. I see many variations on it, but I'm stumped.

I had a D-Link router which was being used openly. All worked fine, but it was 5-6 yrs old and the ports etc were falling apart from much plugging in/out by teenagers.

I bought a TrendNet TEW-432BRP and everything geared up fine on my PC. I decided to set security on it as WPA2, had some trouble navigating settings on my laptop but eventually figured it out and was connected fine - which what I normally do [google google google]. Then tried to ENSURE my daughter's was connecting and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't.

After many hours, I eventually figured I'd go back to leaving it unsecured just to test whether she could connect, so reset EVERYTHING ... router, laptops etc. PC and my laptop were again working and connecting fine, but no matter what I do I cannot get hers to connect.

It says it's connected but there is no access to the internet. I tried to find a solution but to no avail. I'm not sure what other info you need - just let me know. Thanks in advance THATS exacly the same propbel i'm having, well, extrimaly simmilar anywar, have you tryed unplugging your ruter and then turning it back oon?Does your daughters wifi adapter support WPA2? That might explain why it will let you connect when the encryption is turned off, but not allow you when WPA2 is turned on.Not sure if it does or not, but it doesn't let her laptop connect either way. This is my series of events...lol...

1. Had D-Link [unsecured] - Home PC, my laptop, and daughter's laptop worked fine.

2. Switched to a TRENDnet TEW 432BRP - Initially tried to secure it, but daughter's laptop wouldn't connect. My laptop was in repair at that time so i couldn't take the time to fool with it because she needed hers to go to school. Got mine out of repair [it was just my power cord] and proceeded to sit down with everything while she was at school. Home PC and my laptop worked fine unsecured, and so I moved on to try to secure it. Again, Home PC and my laptop worked fine with both WPA and WPA2.

3. Daughter comes home from school, and I [feeling like an absolute computer guru....lol] figure I can just replicate what I did with my own laptop to get hers online. I failed. And so I reset the router, BEGAN from scratch, and started with an unsecured TRENDnet.

4. Again, my Home PC and my laptop were connecting fine to the internet on the unsecured network. But hers would not.

5. I performed and rebooted afterwards:

Reset WINSOCK ENTRIES to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

6. I removed all networks from her "Wireless Networks" list and began afresh. Still no internet.

It says it's "connected" but where my *online* laptop [which I'm using now] has the icon with the two monitors and a little globe [by the clock] - hers only has the two monitors with no globe. And no access to the internet.

Any ideas?Does setting a static IP have the same results? When connected to the router can you ping websites from her laptop? Are you able to ping the other machines connected to the router? Oy... two of those questions are out of my league.

I cannot ping websites - it says Cannot Find Host
No idea how to set a static IP or what it means to do so.
Don't know how to ping other machines.

Could you explain how To set a static IP, open up the Control Panel, navigate to Network Connections, right-click the wireless adapter that is connecting to your router, and select Properties. After that, a dialog WINDOW will open. Under the "General" tab, there will be a small list of options. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties. In this dialog window you will enter the static IP for that machine, the default gateway, subnet mask, and DNS servers that you wish to you. If you do not know this info, you can find it under this next piece.

To find the IP addresses of the other machines so that you can ping them. Open up the command prompt (WinKey+R then type in 'cmd'), and type 'ipconfig /all'. This will show the IP settings for all adapters on the computer. Here you will find the IP address of the current machine, so that you may ping it, the default gateway, subnet mask, and DNS servers that it is using. This info may be used in the previous step in setting up a static IP address.

Keep up posted with your progress and/or questions.

WiFi is not a long range communication protocol. You cannot remain connected to your router as you roam the countryside, If that's what you have in mind.If he needs internet anywhere he roams,
802.11 Wi-Fi is NOT the best choice.
He should look into:
Android
Blackberry
i Phone
Verizon

I got the feeling that the OP didn't want to CONNECT as he was driving down the road, but at home, with his TRAILER a DISTANCE from his home, and parked at RV parks.

While someone is driving down the road there should never be someone riding in the trailer.

Solve : Why can I not connect to the internet at all??

Answer»
I have tried connecting to several wireless NETWORKS and a physical broadband connection and have failed to get connected to the internet on both browsers (Firefox, IE)

My computer tells me that I am connected to the networks, even telling me that it cannot find anything wrong with the connections, but no program dependent on the internet will work. Skype, iTunes, Sony store, etc. I also cannot access any webpages, with FireFox saying that it has a "Network Timeout". The connections are good and strong, but nothing WORKS!

I'm on my last nerve. I recently got a job that requires me to have internet on the go, and I am frustrated like you wont believe. I'm CONTEMPLATING taking my laptop to be looked at, but I'm worried about the cost.

I'm using Windows VISTA on a Satellite A215-S4757

HELP
Two things. If your job requires you to have internet access wherever you go then it is up to your job or yourself to make sure you pay for a mobile broadband connection from the cell phone carriers like Sprint. STOP hoping that you'll be able to leech off other people's wifi.

Second, just because you connect to someone's wireless network does not automatically mean you have internet access. Networking, whether wired or wireless, is meant to connect PCs together and not necessarily for internet access. So that's probably why you can't do anything internet related. Perhaps the networks you are connecting to are just to connect their PCs and not for an internet connection. Lets not forget firewalls configured to not allow certain traffic, especially if it's from unknown pc.Also, there could be DHCP or DNS issues.

Solve : What pointer are they talking about??

Answer»

I'm not sure what internal pointer they are talking about?
Is this pointer the symbols, brackets, etc.. that I see typed onto the page?
Here is what I'm talking about,

$fruits = array('APPLE', 'banana', 'cranberry');
echo end($fruits); // cranberry

?>

Yes, I know what an Array is.
That is not the problem. I also know what first and last means too. I've taken all the classes on calculus, Computers Concepts and Applications.
So, yes, Cranberry is the last item. So, yes, as you can see, I understand that.
apple is the first one, banana is the 2nd item.

I set the DVD/VCR to start recording and stop at a certain time all the time.
So, I know how to calculate things. Since I have to do that in order to have it stop about 7 minutes sometimes past when the show is due to end, in case of other things with the clock that maybe off a bit.

Also, sorry if I sound like I'm confused. I'm sick anyways all the time and just had Hepatitis A, and still dealing with affects from that which affects my memory and stress makes things worse too. I'm TRYING to get all the basic information about things in life all written down, so that in case I go into problems again where I don't even know how to spell my own name, I can look back at information for things.
So, yes, I've already learned all these topics years ago is what I'm trying to say, and got A's in the classes too. Which is why going out to take a class or something, which I can't physically do any of that due to my health being worse.

Thanks,
Amy

So what's the question?

The internal pointer is the item in the array which is currently being used.
See here: http://www.talkphp.com/vbarticles.php?do=article&articleid=41&title=using-the-internal-array-pointers-to-access-elements-in-arraysYes, so is the double slashes //
is that the internal pointer? Since Cranberry is typed there? Since it is being used.
Or is the internal pointer any of the quotes around the word Cranberry in the Array list above?
Or is it the parenthesees?
It's the item in the array. In your example the pointer is at cranberry. You can't see the internal pointer.

as you said, you understand what an array is. good.

so you have the array of strings in $fruits:

Code: [Select]$fruits = array('apple', 'banana', 'cranberry');

the Internal "pointer" is basically part of the array. you can't see it- you don't define it when you create the array- by default it "points" to the first element.

Various array functions change the "current" element being pointed at in the array. For example, the end() function you use:

Code: [Select]$fruits = array('apple', 'banana', 'cranberry');
echo end($fruits);

as you NOTE in the comment, it will give back "cranberry" since that is at the end of the array.

however, it also sets the "current" element (the internal pointer) to point at the last element of the array. if you tried to use the next() function on the fruits array, you wouldn't get anything in return:

Code: [Select]$fruits = array('apple', 'banana', 'cranberry');
echo end($fruits);
echo next($fruits);
would only echo "cranberry"; the second "next" function returns nothing- since the next() function returns the next item, and the internal pointer is at the end of the array already, there is no next item.

I was hoping maybe I found something that might help to figure out what the guy who messed up all my files and stuff did.
Since the index file is suppose to be the default. The 1st that happens by default. See, I know he renamed the files, even when I tried to tell him not to do this. He was trying to help me back things up. Which the other thing is I keep trying to ask him, if renaming the files is what is suppose to happen, why did it work just fine for me when I backed things up without renaming the files. I can't get him to answer this question.
He has messed both mine and my mom's computers, accounts we have all messed up due to this.
Here is one of the messages that happens when we try to open the files,
"
Firefox can't find the file at
/C:/DOCUME~1/Anne/LOCALS~1/Temp/Temporary Directory 7 for
amy.zip/abctvshows/abctvshows/geocities.com/abctvshows/ben3.jpg.

Could the item have been renamed, removed, or relocated?
Is there a spelling, capitalization, or other typographical error in the address?
Do you have sufficient access permissions to the requested item?
"

So, maybe we are already at the end of somewhere, and it can't get to the next item, since there is no next item. Unless since the index file is the 1st one and if it's been erased, then the 1st item is not there, so the next item can't work right and it's messing things up because of this. Since that 1st item needs to be there for things to execute/work properly.

What you posted was a segment of PHP code. it has absolutely 0 to do with anything that anybody would have done on your PC at any point in time.

the end of somewhere? next item? index file? you asked about PHP arrays because you gave a segment of PHP. that has absolutely nothing to do with files or indexes or your local machine whatsoever, and certainly it has zero relevance to what you claim to be a vigilante "repairman" going around renaming peoples files.

Since I know for each events/functions to be able to happen, if the 1st thing, or the default is not there anymore, the whole thing is not there anymore. Then nothing can start because it is looking for things that are not there anymore.

Because this is what he told me he was going to do before he did this. He said he is going to rename them. Which I didn't want him to do. I tried so many ways to just stop him from doing this. He wouldn't listen and did it anyways.

We have a terrible time when trying to get tech support for anything. A lot of what some of them say don't make any sense either. Like when you call because the new DVD/VCR combo recorder keeps stopping and then telling you it is illegal to record the tv show you are trying to record. We know it's not illegal for several reasons, the biggest reason we know it is not illegal is when you have another one that is currently doing that function just fine and the one you are replacing did all these things just fine before the whole thing just died because of having it for years, since we know all things in life don't function anymore after a certain amount of time.

Also, not sure why you say that the PHP Arrays have nothing to do with files on my computer. Since the information listed in the arrays are typed out there. That is what you type in the list. Yes, I used the software that is installed on my computer to type it out. The software is installed in the Add remove programs SECTION of the whole computer. So, whenever you want to use that Program/software, whatever you want to call it, you just select what you want to use and use it. You type the words, by hitting the letters on the keyboard. Then you hit file and save as, and it saves the file. All of the files have extensions. Some of those extensions are .php
.html .css .jpg .gif and so on.
Plus there are things typed before the extension. The word index is what is typed there for all the index files.
index.html
index.css
index.php
index.dat
Also, all of the files are of course in folders. The folders you create and name the folder to put them in.

Solve : Can i use my laptop as a wireless router?

I want to connect my Wii and ps3 to the internet, but all i have is a usb net card from verizon for internet access. Is there a way to send wifi from my laptop as a wireless router? can i connect a wireless router to my laptop? Thanks for the help!!Okay, you have a similar problem that i used to have.

I have not completely solved my problem, but i do have a temporary solution, you say you have a Quote

usb net card from Verizon.
Do you have wireless on your laptop? if so, you can go into the "Network Connections" (For XP USERS: Start -> Control Panel -> Network and internet connections -> Network connections) Find the USB Network, Right CLICK on it and press "Properties" at the top there should be a small tab called "SHARING" Click on that and tick the box stating "share my internet connection (or something along those lines)" Then with your computer make a wireless "AdHOC" Network. This will prompt you to enter an SSID and a Password. Once entered, you will see the laptop saying "waiting for users to connect" connect using the SSID on your Wii and PS3 and you should be able to get internet access.

Note: I have only tried this on my Computer with a Wireless PCI card. This does not work for my iPod touch either.

I hope that i have helped you with your SLIGHT dilemma. if you want more information please do not hesitate to post and ask.

MerlynIt is possible, but the connection is liable to be shockingly apauling when trying to game.

I would suggest READING this site:

Or you can use arp -a which is IP based also with mac address. Its a little better that APS but APS SCANS all ports in a given IP RANGE or specific IP

Solve : about IP?

Answer»

What is the difference between IP that we get from sites like http://www.whatismyip.com/ and IP we write in
internet protocol ( tcp/ip ) propertiesThat site tells your modem's IP address.

The IP you put in your computer's settings is the IP your computer will use to connect to your modem or router.

All devices connected to your modem/router use the same modem IP for their external IP. Then when stuff gets sent to the modem/router the router sends it back to the internal IP of the computer that needs that info.whatismyip.com gives you the outside IP as seen from www. The other is the IP address is the inside IP of your computer as it pertains to the DHCP scheme of your router.what will be the subnet of the outside ip ??

ALSO how my friend will connect to my computer when i have multiple computers on ONE dsl connection

what will be the subnet of the outside ip ??

Look into port-forwarding.

The "outside" IP address will be the IP of your modem/router, which will then forward traffic on different ports accorindly to items on your "inside" network.

Yesterday my Dell Vostro 1000 suddenly cut off from my home wireless connection completely. I went into the list of wireless connections and the connection I was TRYING to connect to kept disappearing and reappearing on the list. Solve : Firewall Slowing Internet Connection?

Answer»

My ISP is Bell South (ATT). I recently up-graded my DSL connection to U-Verse, having been assured that this would improve my Internet download speed. It didn't; I was getting about 5Mbs before the change, and after it. (The speed was checked with ) Since my cost didn't increase, I stayed with the up-grade. Recently I have seen the speed decrease until it was only 2Mbs.

My OS is Win2K, I am connected to the internet through a 2-wire router, which has a built-in firewall. My computer also had a firewall (ZoneAlarm) and an anti-virus program (Avast).I contacted U-Verse support about my problem, and, after the usual run-around, was told that the reason for the slow speed was a conflict between the router's firewall, and my installed programs. I disabled my programs, and the speed increased to about 10.5Mbs.

I am concerned about no longer being able to use my anti-virus program. I can't get enough info from BellSouth about their program to quiet my fears. They say they no longer support Win2k, and ca't PROVIDE any info on what I can do.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what Anti-Virus program might work with the SETUP I have?I'd rather blame ZA, than Avast for your issue.

I have uninstalled each of them and re-installed them one at a time. ZA has a greater effect on the speed than does Avast, but both of them slow the speed down significantly. I'm operating now without either of them. The speed is good, but I'm concerned about the lack of protection that Avast provides. I'm looking for a replacement for Avast that won't slow the speedZA is known for causing issues sometimes, so I'd leave it off of your computer.
Your router provides you with hardware firewall, so you should be OK in that department.
It's surely not good to be without any AV program.
Avast is rather light AV program, so I'm not sure why it's causing issues.

I did as you suggested, and downloaded the Rollup. I was then able to download Avira.
AND THAT'S WHERE THE TROUBLE STARTED! I no longer have any ability to access the Internet, except, as I'm doing now, from Safe Mode. I have no idea what went wrong.

I have removed Avira completely, but to no avail.

What do I do now?Make sure, your computer is set to obtain IP address automatically.
1. Go Start>Settings>CONTROL Panel (Vista/7 users: Start>Control Panel)
2. Double click Network Connections (Vista/7 users: Network and Sharing Center)
3. Vista/7 users - From the list of tasks on the left, click Manage network connections.
4. For a wired network connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.
For a wireless network connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then select Properties.
5. From the General tab (Vista/7 users: Networking tab), click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), make sure it is checked, and then click Properties
6. Click Obtain an IP Address Automatically, and then click OK.

If that doesn't work...
Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 minute. At the same time disconnect ethernet cable as well.
Reconnect everything.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
net stop "dns client"
net start "dns client"

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista)
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.
A lot of suggestions, but you seem to have lost track of the fact that I'm running WIN2kK, not Vista nor 7.
My question remains. You didn't read carefully enough.
Disregard Vista related parenthesis.
All the rest is intended for XP, which should work on Win 2K.
The worst case scenario, something will say "no".Quote from: Broni on May 31, 2010, 03:10:52 PM

You're right, I didn't. I'll give it a try, and we'll see what happens.
ThanksOK Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you. Some other stuff came up which demanded my attention.
I tried all the suggestions you made, without success. The only one which gave any result was "Dial-A-Fix' (your last suggestion. It told me that it was unable to find a module when calling a specific LoadLibrary The module should have been in and Dial-A-Fix suggested it was corrupt.

I have another computer also running WIN2K, and it's having no connection problems so I looked for the file in it, and found it. I also looked for the file in my computer and also found it, but it was a different size, and date.

Short of re-loading WIN2K (which I'm reluctant to do) is there anything you can suggest
to do? How about I copy all the files in the folder on the good computer, and put them on the problem computer ? Remember, before I ran the Avira setup I had to download and install a patch on Windows Explorer. Perhaps re-installing Windows Explore might help.

Thanks for your help. I know the problem isn't solved yet, but we're closing in on it.Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista/7), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista/7).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista/7, most likely, you won't need it).
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista/7 case).

Sorry to say SFC didn't solve the problem It's interesting to note that, when I ran it from Safe Mode, it did nothing at all (no sign of disk activity). When I ran it from normal mode, it worked as it's supposed to. It asked for my CD and used it. The upshot, however, is that the situation remains as it was: I can access the internet only from Safe Mode, although in Normal Mode I can connect to the other computers in my LAN, and the ipconfig shows all the computers, including the router.

What now?

Solve : Wireless problem?

Answer»

Hey guys, I was wondering why some of my wireless computers cannot connect to the internet.
I recently got back my laptop and SET the wireless then about 3 of my computers stopped connecting to the internet. I think my problem is that I have too many things connected to the router? I have about 6 computers needed to be connected to the internet, a PS3, an ipod, and maybe other stuff. Is it because I have too many connections to my router?
I have a Linksys E2000 router.

If that isn't the reason can you guys help me with this? Thanks.Start by resetting the router (unplug it and then reconnect the power, allowing it to reassign ip addresses)Well that's not normal...

At one stage I had:

2x iPod
3x Laptop
1x Desktop (with PCI Wireless card)
1x Desktop (on Ethernet)
and
1x Wii

ALL working fine.

So what I'd suggest, reset your router (unplug and wait for 10-20 seconds, Plug back in) if that doesn't work I might recommend that you try completely removing the network and making a new SSID (refer to user manual to do this) then entering the new password for each COMPONENT that needs to be connected to the internet.

Hopefully I have solved your issue.
Don't hesitate to ask me for any other required information.

Solve : Intel Pro /100 VE Network Adapter Problem?

Answer» HELLO,

I recently reinstalled Windows XP on my desktop and I have gotten the INTERNET to work through my modem, but it only gives me a speed of 12.0 Mbps. From the Dell Driver Downloads page, my network adapter is a Intel Pro /100 VE Network Adapter, but when it is installed, I cannot access any web browser. It says I am connected, and firewalled under Local Area Connection, but my browser does not work. Like I said, my MODEMS' adapter is the only thing keeping me on the internet, but I WANT to BREAK away from it and use the 100 Mbps Intel Adapter. What do you think is wrong?

Thanks,

Solve : HOME VPN?

Answer»

Hi,

Looking for some ADVICE on SETTING up a true VPN type service from my home network, so I can VPN in from other locations and have access to all the assets on my home network.

I currently just have a Linksys router and the setting to allow one IP address to be in the DMZ SEEMS rather insecure to me. I've also not had any EXPERIENCE with tools like DynDNS but was thinking that may be a way to at least get a resolvable UNC without setting up a full server open to the internet. Given that I'm running over Comcast Broadband, Not SURE if I could even do that since the IP address is dynamically assigned via DHCP every time my router needs to be rebooted...

Any advice from folks that have done this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much..

Solve : Client level packet problem?

Answer»

I'm pretty sure I've got a doozie for you guys.

I believe I have packet problems at the client level, but you guys might have better experience than I do at such things. Here are my symptoms.

ALL errors are intermittent

websites timeout or don't load.
Websites come in as "garbled" random characters that don't appear to have any rhyme or rhythm.
Videos sometimes stop mid-stream, even though the rest of the video appears to be loading.
Sometimes half a picture will load, the rest looks like colored static.

I ORGINALLY chalked all of this up to a poor internet connection between me and my ISP. (I'm in a 3rd world country and I'm pretty sure I'm running a satelite link, but I don't have visibility on the connection anywhere past the router).

It got REALLY interesting when I noticed the garbled picture and intermittent webpage loading error happened on the title bar of my D-link router's settings page. So the packets were going from the router to my machine, and (hopefully) had nothing to do with my ISP!

That should put the error at the client level, but I'm not sure how that could be. This is an out-of-the-box Toshiba Satelite laptop!

I'm a fairly adepet computer users, studying for my Security+ exam as soon as I get back state-side, so feel free to ask away guys, I'm rather excited to troubleshoot this beast myself!Remember packets r encapsulated frames. If u use the OSI model as a guide it will help to trouble shoot. My guess it is happening at the Network (layer 3) or Transport (layer 4) layers.

BTW u can try to ping the address of the site u r trying to download from and see the check the time of response. And just one very long sho,t to grasp at straw check your memory with a memory test SW.It turns out, it's not a network problem at all, it just looks like one.

I tried the computer on a different network (using different satelites) with a different network card (went for the LAN instead of the WLAN) and it still happened. The best guess I've got right now is that all of this EXTRA crap on the new computer is conflicting. I'm turning off all virus scanners and the firewall for a while to see if that's the issue.

I'm also trying to get my hands on a seperate laptop to see if it's a symptom of 3rd world internet as a whole...just in case.

Any OTHER thoughts, now that we know it's a client level issue.

(Feel free to move this thread to ANOTHER forum, I didn't INTEND to misplace it )

-JonStart your PC with a Linux CD. See how it performs.hah! That was one of the first things I bought the machine .

Unfortunatley there's some hardware compatability issues that are completely unrelated. UBUNTU and Toshiba Satelites don't appear to play well together....*bump*
nobody?

Linux is not an option at the moment, as the hardware in the Toshiba A505D doesn't work with it I can't get past boot. But that's a different issue....

Any other suggestions?
You said you live in a 3rd world country.
I know what that means.
You may wish to use an isolation transformer and an EMF device for all computer equipment. The noises level on the AC mains is very bad in the 3rd world. And some Laptop power supplies have issues when there is a poor electrical ground. The laptop supply itself can induce noise into telephone and Ethernet wires.

This is not an endorsement. It is for information only.
http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/model.cfm?txtModelID=228&gclid=CN_j7-23uqICFQlZiAod9Txl4w
lol good guess (I've got a mess of Apple machines that got fried due to generator malfuncion and poor grounding the other day)

This issue happens regardless of the power supply grid I'm on, or if I'm soely on battery, or using a WLAN or LAN at a completely different location.

I WISH it were as easy as grounding...

heh, lost an x-box that way too....When generators start up they put out tons of electrical garbage. That's why almost all standby generators that use an automatic transfer switch won't actually make the transfer for a minute or two. They allow a little time to let the generator settle down. These are things I wish my Iraqi electricians new before they installed them .

Still, none of that fixes intermittent problems on my toshiba laptop.

I'm working under the strong belief that whatever the problem is, it's in the laptop, effects both WLAN and LAN, isn't browser dependant, and *NEW* happens regardless of the user...

Also, the error happens when I retrieve files from inside a LAN.
I've ran a RAM memory checker, the RAM is fine.

Something about this machine just REALLY hates talking to the outside world....

Would it matter that it's a 64 bit system?

I've tried a memory check, that didn't do it.
I'm working on 1) using a basic registry cleaner....just in case?
2) Booting the system in safe-mode with networking...see if tha tclears it up. It's *censored* hard to tell when the problem is intermittent......Quote

Go for # 2. Some Mal Ware can not run in safe mode. If you are in Iraq, from what I've read about the power grid there, I don't thing you could ever have too much power protection for computers. From what I've read about the power system there it could destroy toasters. You need line conditioners, UPS units, and anything else you can get your hands on to stabilize power.

I know that may not help with some of your current laptop problems, but it may save it from future problems.

Solve : website from my PC?

Answer»

I need to know how to launch my personal website from my home PC through my DSL Internet.

I know that DSL have dynamic IPs, but i want to learn the procedure only.

I have my website name purchased. You do it... through research:
http://www.google.com/search?q=running+a+website+from+a+home+pc

There are a ton of resources and EXPLANATIONS out there if you put in a little effort. Will your PC be online 24/7?You may already have free web space waiting.
Ask your local Inherent provider if that have a personal page for you.
Your registrar, the company that sold you a domain, may have AONE page site for your personal use.
Other wise, it is a real pain to get the domain to use your personal computer as the web site location.

Yes, you can learn more about this if ypui just do some research. Or read a book.

If your want a website for self expression and social statements, forget about the technology. There are already are many places that will let you have a social page somewhere on the web. Like http://Facebook.com is popular.

If you want a cool looking blog site go to http://woredpress.org and get a free site. But you will have to read a book to help you understand how it works.

Find the book at http://barnesandnoble.com

Post Script.
But if you really want to know the direct answer to your question it will take a rather long lecture to explain how to host from your PC.i use WORDPRESS , they very good and helpful on the forumQuote from: Geek-9pm on June 04, 2010, 03:30:56 PM

@ kpac and others

my pc will not be online for 24/7

and i have a domain name.

I just want to LEARN how to launch it from my home computer.

ofcourse i can't keep my computer online 24/7 but i just want to learn only.

especially when the server is MS windows Server 2003, how can i set it to run from home computer Here's a good article.

http://www.boutell.com/newfaq/creating/hostmyown.html

Is this the main computer you use? If so, then you'll want to take a look at the security risks involved. You set up the server on your local machine. There will be a directory dedicated to the home server. All the web files must be in that STRUCTURE. The rest of the PC will not be seen on the web.
You can get to the web page from any machine on local area network. To get it onto the web, you have to get help from a dynamic server that will manage your DNS for you. You set name servers to the ones given by a company that will manage a DNS Zone for you.

Geek to Live: How to set up a personal home web server
by Gina Trapani
Last updated: September 2006

A web server is software that continuously runs on a computer and allows other computers to download documents from it. This text that you're READING right travelled over a network connection from Lifehacker's hosting web server to your browser. Web servers are usually loud, scary, headless machines in cold windowless rooms, but you can run one under your desk at home.

Why would you want to run a home web server? Maybe you want to download files on your home computer from anywhere. Like, say, your digital music collection. In this how-to, we'll set up a home web server that lets anyone (with the right password!) connect to your computer and download your MP3's from it, for a nice way to share your music collection with friends, or play a song from your home machine at the office for co-workers.

Solve : My Office Internet?

Answer»

Hi,

We currently have an internet connection of 6mb down and 1mb up. The connection is a shared line with other buildings in our road.

We are looking to replace our internet as the connection speed often drops and our isp has to RESET it which is really annoying because our business relies a LOT on uploading and downloading.

We have looked around and found that for roughly the same price we can get a 2MB down and 2mb up connection with a different isp. This connection is not shared.

We were just wondering that if we WENT for this new connection, would the speeds be greater, the same or worse than a shared line of 6mb down 1mb up?

By the way, we are a UK business LOCATED in Thailand, that's why the connection speeds are quite low. It's still a bit behind the times here

Looking forward to receiving your help.

Thanks

Before you make a change, do several speed tests, and see what your average speed really is.

http://www.speedtest.net/

With the other ISP it will never be faster than 2 Mbs. Even though your current connection slows down sometimes you need to see if it drops below 2 Mbs.Quote from: keiththai on June 25, 2010, 02:22:45 AM

Cable internet is "shared"
DSL internet is "not shared"
I suspect that is what you are referring to? Don't know what you mean by "ISP Reset"?
Speed is more a function of the quality of service rather than type of service.

Solve : New router.?

Answer»

I am looking for a better router than I have. I have a Belkin. The antenna can't be changed to an out side one. Besides being able to hook up a out side antenna what do I need to look for in a good router?Home, small office, medium office, ENTERPRISE?

Essentially, more information is required.

Give us the "6 W's" (who, what, when, where, why & how).

Such as, but not limited to:

Machine wise, what will connect to this router?
What operating systems?
What wifi standards 802.11a/b/g/n?
What is the lowest common demoninator of the wifi connection (remember Nintendo DS lites can only use WEP (the DSI range can handle WAP *I think*))?
What is the radius you require for your wifi?
What is the infrastructure around the planned network like (thick walls, multiple floors)?Four computers will connected to this router two will be hard wired and two will be wireless. One lap top and the other three are desk tops. The lap top has Windows 7, two desk tops have Windows Vista, and the last one has Linux Mint. The wireless card in the one desk top is a Belkin G It is one of the two that has Vista. It is my understanding that I can use a N router and it will pick up the G card or is that wrong? The only things hooked to the router will be computers. The trailer that I am trying to get a better connection to is about 140' away from the router. I have just put an out side antenna on the trailer to help pick up a signal. It works fine. I moved the router two feet to a window and went from 2 bars to 3 bars. Three bars lets me connect to the net. So it seems to me I need a better router. I was going to replace the antenna of the router that I have, a Belken, it will not come off. So I will have to replace the router with a better one. What do I need to look for? Oh, the house is wood, 1.5" of insulationboard and drywall. The siding on the house is vinyl. Line of site from trailer to router is clear.Quote from: I Shooter on June 04, 2010, 03:16:52 PM

1) a N router and it will pick up the G card

2) connection to is about 140' away from the router

3) I moved the router two feet to a window and went from 2 bars to 3 bars.

4) Three bars lets me connect to the net.

5) So it seems to me I need a better router.

1) That's true, but I'd recommend getting an "N" card for the machine that is going to be in the trailer.

2) That should be well within "N" range, I believe. That said, I've not used an "N" router or card yet, but I recall SOMETHING about a max of 300 feet.

3) That's ALWAYS a good move

4) I'm surprised 2 bars didn't...*censored* with even 1 bar you should still be able to connect...I imagine something else might have been at play here

5) I'd agree for what you want to do. I don't have any specific recommendations, but you'll definately want an "N" router, and probably something like a Linksys. You might even want to look for one that you can "flash" with a different operating system to give you even greatter control. Someone else might be able to help you more.

Also, consider that the following devices can interfere with wifi: cordless phones; microwaves; other wifi networks and other electronics that are wireless and use the same spectrum (mainly the 2.4GHz band).
